Licensed trade recoil from TV subscriptions
The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers
(ALMP) report that the number of their member pubs who subscribe to BSkyB's premium
package, which costs close to £13,000, is down 20% from its peak, with more
expected to decline their renewal this month.
Setanta Sports partner with BSkyB
for the licensed trade.
A fall in demand for increasingly expensive subscription football will take a
few years to seep through to the game itself as contracts exist in both
Scotland and England for years to come, but English football in particular is
particularly dependent on TV money and will be challenged if revenues soften.
Good.

What will we do without English football ? Will there still be a World Cup ? Will there be any point to life ? Will they blame Catholic schools ?
Paul,
TV money is eventually going to level off and then start to fall. A saturation point is going to be reached sooner or later. Hence the attempts of the 39th game to try and squeeze some more longevity out of it by increasing the size of the market place even more so.
When the TV bubble bursts a lot of EPL clubs could be left high and dry. But how long before it happens? 10yrs? Longer...?
I wonder if the smoking ban has played a part in this reduction.
As for the subject Paul, the tv revenues can only go so high. We live in an age where football is going through a boom period - Man U 75,000, Celtic, Arsenal 60,000 and so forth, attendances that were never known even in the halcyon days of the 50's and 60's.
Celtic may well rescue the premiership in a few years. If tv money declines then big clubs with big debts, along with tv stations, will want change.

Paul,
all the classical trickle effects of a recession are beginning to be realised.
As you say this will have a more serious impact in England than up north and is a golden long term opportunity for a well managed operation such as CFC...
I blame Gordon Strachan.
Hi All,
As usual lurking (why do we use that term) away in the back round for the last couple of weeks, enjoying and hating all the speculation at the same time.....however I have to post today.
I CANNOT BELIEVE OR UNDERSTAND THE ABUSE WGS HAS BEEN GETTING!
What ever happened to supporting your team? Who needs the Laptop Loyal when we have fans like these.
IT IS 2 GAMES INTO THE SEASON. The transfer window is still OPEN. WE ARE STILL IN EUROPE! WE ARE CHAMPS!
Some folks on here really need to GET A GRIP!
The worst thing about it is that I dont believe it is people on the wynd up - AND I DONT GET IT.
All you WGS Slammers. Ask yourself... what were you doing on the last day of the season? Were you reveling in the Hordes misfortune and our wonderous victory? I thought so. YOU should be ashamed.
Sorry for the rant, just really hacked off at these "Bhoys"

From the previous thread I can say that I'm increasingly scrolling by. That's new for me.
Sutty,
Dortmund 1 was Frei , Bordeaux was Cavenghai.
Probably dreaming about these two, but these are the type we are missing up front just now with Jan i feel. McDonald has pissed me off his attitude since we resumed at the start of July. He's a shadow of the player he was last season. His hunger and work ethic has evaporated. He saunters around like Kris Boyd. A spell on the bench to get his appetite back would do him world of good.
PS Sorry for the off topic (well for this thread anyway ) Paul

I wonder what percentage of Sky's sports income comes from pubs compared to domestic subscriptions.
Pubs can only sustain the payments if they make more money over the bar. Perhaps a lot of people are simply watching more games at home?
Paul67
Regarding your comments on the last thread the 2007 Prelims / Aug 2007 had 2.5 pages of coomenst and notes. These or their equivalent are missing from the 2008 download available from the CFC website.
Consequently wondering why.

Any thoughts on the accounts put out last week?
Wee bit short on details?
I am looking for the "Notes to the accounts" which were part of the 2006/07 numbers put out in Aug 2007.
There are no "Notes to the accounts" to accompany Friday's announcemnet. Any idea why?
Makes it difficult to make a meaningful comparison.

Are you aware wether Sky have any kind of safeguard clause which allows them to reduce the level of payments which they make to the EPL , should their subscriptions decrease
If they have it would be very interesting to watch the overspenders squirm
Personally i can see subsriptions to Sky decreasing as mortgages rise and people are laid off or placed on short term contracts
Remember the ITV sponsorship of the Championship , their withdrawal from that caused mayhem..not at all saying that sky will go that way but if they are able to reduce payments it would put a lot of teams in difficulty ,particularly if it dovetails with falling attendances

agree with your sentiment
murdochs billions have gone almost entirely to players and agents...they have done nothing for the infrastructure of the game and have created an imbalance that is unhealthy, and the ridiculous scenario of 16 year olds in england getting 7 figure signing on fees and wages of £10,000 a week
like you, i won't shed any tears if the next EPL tv contract is well below the current level
just watched the game for the first time tonight
i felt we played pretty well...i also felt hinkel played well...he made a lot of runs beyond naka which gave naka options he wouldnt have had otherwise
brown had a good game, as did naka...aiden decent but not as brilliant as usual...jvoh worked hard......i would have like more from skippy....his timing is a litt;e off
all in all i was encouraged by our performance...dundee utd are a very decent team, who played with fire in the belly and good ability

Vito is absolutely right. It's up to the player. Don't forget, it was confirmed that Basa got Celtic offer, early in this transfer window. After fiasco in Moscow he came back with nothing in his hands. It's Peter Lawwell's job to find the way between demands. I say, Lawwell was lucky. Now he has easier job to do with Marko Basa contract. I cannot believe, the player may choose another option. I understand Le Mans must be upset. I remember, they were hoping to get at least 8 million EUROs for the player. That was the real price some time ago. I think he is available for less then 5 million EUROs now.

I did not have a chence to hear "The Tony Williams Lifetime" yet. When I'll be next time in the media store i will ask for that.
Hi Paul 67 just posted this on the last thread and noticed you had put up a new article. So here goes.
I frequently lurk on the site and rarely post and often skip by when reading through threads.
I was at Tannadice yesterday and I thought we were actually doing okay up till Naka went off. I felt Barry struggled to impose himself and with Andreas having a poor game it impacted on Barry attacking (or the lack of)
Dundee Utd were much improved from the drubbing at New Douglas but I felt we should still have seen them off. If the strikers take their chances its 3 points and we are all (reasonably) happy but football is full of twists and turns and it was not to be.
However to read some of the stuff on here about the manager of the 3-IN-A-ROW champions ability after two games of the season is making me astounded of forehead.
I wonder if the rush in new log-ins from existing posters would be worth us all having a look at!!!!!
I also cannot believe we still have the same type of posts accusing people with a particular opinion of being "happyclappers" whatever that is. I support Celtic.
These same posters still read the DR and the Herald and then come on here and criticise Keevins or Guidi or Broadfoot in one sentence and then in the next tell us some garbage story about Celtic must be true because its in the paper.
One poster could not wait to tell us how Mr Strachan had bought Glenn for the bench and after watching the press conference myself he did not say what the poster alluded to. He was a fan (?)
If we win more titles I for one will not sit back and say Oh how I wish we could have one them with more flair and style. The record books only record winners, there is no page for "Best League Title Winner with flair"
I cannot see past us for 4-in-a-row, I am not sure about Europe this season I hope for the last 16 but will reserve judgement until the window shuts and I see what the squad is like.
Finally Paul is our Polish friend (thank you Mr Z) on the correct lines? and is a LB looking promising?

You mention the 'increase in the amount of rubbish posted on this site over the last 24 hrs'.
Paul 67 mentioned the number of new, and first time, posters who came on after yesterday's 'disaster' at Dundee Utd.
Rangers have just endured one of the worst footballing embarrassments in their history on a par with Berwick, Hamilton etc).
Rangers are being blatantly misled by their 'patron'.
Rangers support is just starting to realise the extent to which they have been duped over the years.
Even the laptop loyal are begining to question things quietly to themselves.
Iis it any wonder we have a few random new posters trying to belittle the achievements of the current, very successful, Celtic manager. Could they (he) have an agenda.
We all know Gordon is not perfect, but I don't know of many who are. I hope he is given a modicum of backing by the Celtic support, that would be 1000% more than he has had to date.
I know there are a few Celtic folks who have a genuine desire to see us play like the TB era regardless of results, but aside for Liam's efforts I cannot recall another time when we played such a style. All are entitled to their opinion. I have never seen it effective for a sustained period. Even big Jock new he had to be pragmatic in many matches.
Many others are anti Gordon Strachan for other reasons, and we can only guess what they are. Some might be religion, but not many I think.
I believe most are for another more sinister reason. I would not get too wound up. These folks might be taking a wee holiday from their normal sites which might be a bit too depressing just now.
Interseting topic Paul, I cant remember the last time I watched a game in a pub. I wonder if this will affect sky and setanta significantly though. It would be interesting to know if household uptake of both football channels subscriptions possibly offset any losses from this and lessen the blow financially to both and to the EPL financial dominance when their next contract renewal comes up.
WGS,
Skippy is way off form now. I'd be surprised to see him start again on Saturday. Samaras will get his chance. This time he needs to take it. We all remember his inept performances when starting games compared to the far greater impact he had from the bench.
Time for the gorgeous bhoy to grab his chance methinks.

"THE ABUSE WGS HAS BEEN GETTING!"
Where do see abuse ?
All I see are some who think that we are not a team that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Some like myself think that GS employs a too rigid system and tries to shoehorn players into that system rather than design a system to get the best out of the players he has.
They also question the existence of a plan B when plan A does not seem to be working
This is not to belittle his historic achievement in winning 3IAR
I have been watching Celtic since the early 1970s - long enough to know that our current team has problems
GS acknowledges this as well as his frequent changes indicate
Debate is good in a democracy
Noone is suggesting that we will not win the league only that we could do better with a more flexible approach from GS

Paul67,
If Shaun returns the wee man owes GS big time. He made him a player then decided to jump, now GS is resurrecting his career again. One lucky Bhoy if you ask me.
Rangers are about sign Bresiciano. The boy is a player and regardless how we mocked them last week they are spending to try and reclaim this league. Brescianio was on the verge of a move to Man City last year under Eriksson. Classy midfielder and Mendes is no mug either. If they are buying Davis as well then to me that tells me something. Maybe Barry's injury is long term.
Will Celtic react or will we underestimate them again this summer like last summer? Time will tell.
Awe_Naw,
Thats an interesting thought about the smoking ban, Could possibly be making more people take up services to their houses. the smoking ban has had an affect on pubs has it not? I wouldnt really know as I dont go to pubs all that often.
Not long in and have been reading through the last thread with all its excellent debate. I started to put my thoughts together to discover that Paul had created a new thread. So please forgive me for being slightly off topic.
When ever anyone mentions that we should play attractive, good to watch, entertaining football, we get the old “Well remember Tommy Burns tried that and we never won anything, I would rather we got the points any old way”
Well I want us to play attractive, good to watch, entertaining football and win games! And why not. Other teams can manage it as well as win things. I am also sick to death of hearing people say that you can't play that way in the SPL? Well I think we can!
Gordon Strachan is on record as saying he also wants us to play this way, so what's the problem then? You will all admit that last season we played some dreadful football, whilst struggling to find our central midfield pairing. As Paul said it took the SFA to intervene ( to our advantage for once) to force us to find a matching pair that worked and worked well.
So what do we do this season? As “The Judge” said, we bring back the common denominator of that failure, Scott Brown. Now I think that Scott is a good player and will (Ghod willing) become a Celtic great. So that leads me to think that the problem lies not with individual players but with the system.
The system that we play is far to predictable and makes it oh so easy for opposition managers. I believe that we should not only be playing 4-3-3 but a fluid system were players change over from each other within the two banks of three. ManU and Barca at their best do this and it is so hard to play against.
Hail, Hail.
WGS
Where did you get the confirmation on Bresiciano
Awe-Naw
You are in cracking form tonight - keep up the good work.
Sportscene just about to start. I wonder if they will be able to explain why Broadfoot got a foul for diving and Mikoliunas got a booking for being fouled. Mr Dougal at his worst although Darrell King states in the Evening Times that he had an assured performance and got every major decision bang on. The footage of Broadfoot's dive is already on the BBC website.

I too, have been watching celtic since the early 80's, and god to i know never to give up. I very rarley criticise a manager, due to boards (usually innefectual) monies provided.
WGS has spent a fair wee bit of cash, but with winning 3iar deserves the chance to go for 4. I am fully behind him, but the playing of an unfit robson was sheer stupidity on sunday.
Sometimes, he does seem to make baffling decisions, and brings the criticism on himself.....
on saturday, i hope he is BRAVE against falkirk.

scott macdonald needs benched, due to his fitness.

You asked about Burnley, Spin, and Alistair Campbell, I thought you might also ask about Burnley and it's BNP connection too ? Feels like that might be more in line with your 'hard line' attitude towards Celtic's current manager.
I noticed you never actually answered any of my questions last night ? Maybe a few of those other new posters who have joined today in sympathy with your views might like to do so ?
Make no bones about it this bubble will burst. In 10 years time we will look back and say FFS Those were crazy days.It is likely that some teams currently in the EPL will no longer exist in their current form. Some of these sides are having to sell their soles to some of the richest men in the world to keep up with the Jones's.

Free footy links on web must also be playing their part in reduced subscription. If they clamped down on all the illegal viewing then I'd end up going to pub more to watch or even get Sky.
Living in London means I catch up with CH67 which at £5.95 a month is great value. If we improved the quality of programme we could tie up all our own tv rights and take 100% of money. CL football would still allow for worldwide coverage for non-subscribers and high profile.
Pfyar,
Why not? They are weak in that department. Ferguson in my view is finished. Hemdani won't play again and I Thomson is on a sticky wicket as well.

I must contact the Major as I cannot keep up with all the potential timverse agent potential candidate's that reside here in the pre CQN Blogosphere CQN Blog. Even my rather large machine has limitations you know. Paul67, you have indeed set the plan well in motion.
From last article: Awe naw: I cant be held resposible for you failing to understand the question. A reasonable question at that. I´m asking you to compare like for like and you cant because it´s not possible. If you want to ignore budget constraints then I´m sorry I cant. As I said before I live in the real world
Lol. Im actually laughing out loud at how ridiculous this is. Its almost perfect in its python-esque logic. Let me get this right. You want me to answer a question which you know I cant because it isnt possible! Anything else you'd like me to answer? Perhaps why the world is flat? How to travel faster than the speed of light?
As for the last point - I havent asked you to 'forget budget constraints'. Total nonsense mate. In actual fact I went to great lengths to mention budgets or lacktherof in my posts. We have a similar budget to clubs in Holland, Portugal and Greece. Yet we dont play with the same tempo and technical standard as Porto, Benfica, Olympicaos, PSV and others. I realise the reasons for this arent just budget based which was why I said I didnt expect us to match these teams. Nor do I expect us to play like Manu every week although I do expect - in light of lower quality opposition in the SPL - that we should be able, with our budget, to see some kind of regular gap in quality between Celtic and the likes St Mirren. If you are happy with the quality and entertainment on show then fair play to you. Im not - if that makes me a hunposter in your eyes then boo hoo, I'll not sleep tonight.
Evening CQN.
I think the whole televised football market is screwed up. Currently, the companies which promise to gouge consumers the most win the contracts to show the games. This drives subscription prices up to the highest level it is projected customers will bear. I didn't think markets worked like that.
Aren't markets supposed to tend toward a price advantageous to all parties, that long term trading relationships can thrive in place of rapacious short-termism?
None of the pubs I like can afford to show games, which is madness- it's just footy.
I have no real alternative to rubbishy internet feeds.

It's also a gamble if we don't sign, but as strachan says, it's pointless signing someone for the sake of it. We need quality & hopefully the SSM won't let us down.
If Channel67 offered decent quality live games folk would be wiling to pay a reasonable price (£10/month?). But it don't and I, for one, won't.
Would signing Maloney not come into the category of pointless signing, just for the sake of it?
Couldn't lace Naka or Aiden's boots, another bum for the bench
chris sutton:
Not sure if it was renewed this year, but my research shows it lasts until at least 2009/2010 season, it was a 3 year deal worth £625m. Crazy money!
As well as underestmiating Kaunas. Maybe Murray has been forced into a position of having to spend. Not from the fans but possibly from the manager and assistant manager.

Your a far braver man than myself. How did you manage to go unnoticed while grinning like a chesire cat. I couldnt do that, not now anyway. I remember going to Ken Eadie's (old clydebank player) testamonial with an ex-brother-in-law from the darkside, thankfully my sister seen sense a few years ago. There was this guy I knew from my old days as a tearaway who was a bitter hun who knew I was a tim, (oh clydebank were playing them) and he took the miff when i jumped the piestall q at halftime. he shouted out loud f*** off f*****!!, I tell you i have never been so scared in my life when he shouted that. before anyone has a go at me, this game was on a friday night, I'm from Clydebank and had a sweetspot for the bankies at the time as my hometown club, and it was the last ever match at kilbowie park and a few of us were in the atlantis pub on kilbowie road on the friday night in question. Too many beers and a bit of bravado and I was there!! What a mistake, mind you i got a good up close and personal look at the thugs, not at all pretty. Thankfully though about 3 months later i got my revenge when i bumped into the guy in Dalmuir and gave him a good piece of my fists. Not that i advocate violence of any sorts.
WGS..my thoughts exactly ;)
Maloney's a good player. Lots we've signed aren't. He won't cost the earth and might take a bit of pressure off Naka and McGeady. Creativity, a bit short in that department at the mo IMO..

Is that the panto started mate :^)
GL2 - Thanks mate, sitting here still roasting after trying to train in that Sauna tonight! Definitely heading up on Saturday, though maybe have to go up from Branchton as the bhoys have football at ravenscraig in the morning I think.
On the TV deal in England, there's surely no way the current levels will continue forever. A point will be reached, and maybe soon with the 'credit crunch', were people will be less willing to pay the extra for Sky and Setanta. I imagine there are a few teams in the Premiership who would be in big trouble without the annual £30-40million. The ones who are annual mid-table also-rans who are usually well away from relegation but with no hope of making the top 5 or 6.
Paul, if this happens and teams start getting into trouble with lower TV revenue do you see a scenario were Celtic (and no doubt them as well) will be looked at as a way of freshening up the Premiership and maybe raising the TV revenue again, though maybe not to the astronomical levels of today? We would find ourselves in a fantastic position financially if this were to happen.
Then again if we can't beat Utd and St Mirren by at least 5 goals what chance would we have against the likes of Fulham and Hull City?!

i can't understand their signing policy this close season, then again i can't understand ours so far either.
but i agree with your recent posts, the SSM has a very busy week ahead,we could do with recruiting up front, midfield and in defence.

On what basis would you give the job to big Mogga? and explain your reasoning for sacking WGS?, its a results business, where has he failed to deliver?
MON with better players didn't achieve what the wee man has.
