Transport Police report sectarian offences eradicated in all but one club
Earlier this month figures were released detailing
arrests and anti-social behaviour incidents carried out by spectators
travelling to and from football matches in England, Wales and Scotland.
Celtic Quick News contacted the British Transport Police for a breakdown for arrests in Scotland which was illuminating. For season 2007/8, arrests were down from 73 to 61, but the total number of incidents involving football fans, including those which did not result in an arrest, rose from 86 to 99.
Fans from seven SPL clubs were arrested: Rangers, Dundee United, Motherwell, Celtic, Hearts, Aberdeen and Hibernian, as well as fans from Cowdenbeath, Hamilton Academicals, Dundee, the Highland League's, Clachnacuddin, and supporters of Chelsea, Manchester United, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Two Chelsea fans were arrested for possession of drugs, Manchester United appear on the list as one of their fans was arrested for Breach of the Peace at Motherwell Railway Station. The Cowdenbeath fan was arrested for Indecent Assault, perhaps the most serious incident during the season.
Celtic, Motherwell, and Hearts each had four fans arrested during the season, Aberdeen and Hibs had three. Dundee United were the second highest offenders with six arrests, while an incredible 30 Rangers fans were arrested, almost half of the season's total for all clubs. These figures do not include those arrested at the Manchester riot in May, which British Transport Police refer to in their press release.
Including those which did not result in arrest, there were six incidents involving Celtic fans, six for Dundee United, seven for Motherwell, four for Hibernian and five each for Aberdeen and Hearts. Rangers fans were involved in a total of 48 incidents, again just less than half the total.
One striking aspect of the list is that very few fans are arrested at the station nearest their home ground, which suggests police take a hands-off approach when large numbers of fans are congregated together, most incidents occur when fans travel to away games.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the information is the complete eradication of sectarian offences from all but one Scottish club. 11 arrests were made for sectarian offences in total, 10 Rangers fans and one Northern Ireland fan; news that is bound to resonate at the SFA and Uefa, both of whom warned the Ibrox club two years ago that punitive penalties would follow unless such behaviour was eradicated.
The figures are a ringing endorsement of most Scottish football fans, although clearly Rangers have a significant problem they have failed to address; Manchester, it appears, was merely the tail-end of a trouble filled season.
You can read an account of dates, venues and nature of offences here.

WooF!
Just missed out again :-(
3rd?
Hello
Interesting stats, however I wonder what the real tally would be if those not caught so to speak had been.
No doubt this is not something you are likely to read in Ranger's official media partners.
Sorry Muppetbhoy....
Will be interested to see who picks up the press release - though not sure the breakdown will be investigated too hard.
jinkybhoy - Bon Accord a bit out the way but owner and son are good Celtic Bhoys and if you're into ale they have 10 very well kept ones (cellarman is a Chemistry teacher I think). Your first pint can be a sample of each of the ten.....
Can't believe I got a fourth! feel like a BMX'ing Olympian!
Anyway Paul, it says it all. They are way out in front. Better than us at something! Shame! All Scotlands!
I notice that the official Dignity FC website is offering a charity night in fancy dress at a price which is not 16.90. Cowboys and Injuns! Honourable cause...but I wonder how many will adopt the Blazing Saddles Theme..and turn up in KKK, Nazi, etc outfits..although most will sound like Gabby Johnston, and look more like Mongo!
Paul67,
From previous tread - any reason why Rangers annual accounts not published? Maybe Murphy is using Sunday's game as a smoke and mirror opportunity.
No probs Jackson :-) well done
Paul, I read this story in the papers earlier in the month but then heard nothing more about it. Are you just making sure it doesnt go unnoticed or has there been further press interest in this? Dont get me wrong, it should be highlighted for all to see as the figures are quite revealing but can you imagine the press frenzy had Celtic been top of the hit parade?
Paul -
So what you are saying is that Rangers had more of their fans arrested than there were for those following a medium sized western European country, i.e. Scotland?
Say it all really.
Hail! Hoots mon the noo!
Lyruc
Paul67, how has the media missed this I wonder. Hmmmmmm. oh there goes my paranoia again.

Paul67,
I´m not so sure if this is an indication of an improvement in footballing fans around Scotland or an indication of how ineffective an uninterested Scotlands finest is in actually implementing legislation. No St. Mirren or Falkirk fans arrested at all never mind for sectarian offences.
Considering how extortionate this policing costs us and the club maybe it´s something our resident expert in home affairs could consider having a wee look at.
I am of the opinion that being seconded on such police duty is not exactly a jolly but an easy shift.
Hail Hail
Paul67,
As you know I predicted 2 signings in the last week?? I'm I in with a chance??
Any news on Bobo to Birmingham? I'll believe it when I see it.
They are, simply, The Best.......
Lads,
Going to Dublin on Friday for a stag do, flying back on Sunday, flight leaves Dublin at 3:15pm, I know the airport aren't going to show the match. Is there a boozer smack next to Dublin Airport where I can watch the game??
If we as fans of CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB , can remember that at all times home and away we are ambassadors for our great club ,then we can be proud of the part we played when we are welcomed in more and more countries, cities and clubs and our fans being given a warm welcome in the future as a result
hail hail

not really all that earth shattering news about Rangers supporters ,is it?
Parkheadcumsalford
Was in this place for 3 in a row, they had the huns on one TV and The hoops on a few others. Great Atmosphere.
Easy to find too. Just along the seafront and then cut up into the old city. Ma Nolans

I have been perusing the book for a few weeks during visits to Borders (other book retailers are available) and it has certainly caught my attention. I am going to buy a copy, with cash obviously.

Canamalar - any news on the Henry signing? are you at the wind up? please dont tease me....
great article paul
it would be interesting to find out if this is reported at all in the Scottish Football Media

jamesielegend,
Honest I don't know every bar in the world but....
Unless you try a hotel bar the nearest to the Airport is the Coachmans Inn, on the swords road, they should be showing it.
The caveat being if there is an EPL game on there's a chance of it being bumped. Also they do a Carvery on sundays so there's a good chance of kids running about.
Cheers Marvin,
For the first time in my life I hope the flight home is delayed!
Paul, any truth in the Fletcher from Hibs, Riordan to Hibs rumour that has been mentioned(although not for the first time).

McManus69, interesting point. Not sure why the Rangers accounts are later than last year, they will certainly be a piece of good news for the club, although you have to think that information management is behind it somehow.
Yarranabbe Bhoy, they sure are.
Muppetbhoy, I have seen no information on the Scottish figures at all.
Moonbeams, indeed.
Awe_Naw, this is for British Transport Police venues only.
Jamesielegend, no info.
stevieo62, certainly not.

The biggest problem you may face trying to view the match is that the Cork v Kerry All Ireland Senior Football Semi Final (replay)starts at 2pm (I think). If it does I reckon that the majority of bars will show this.
You'd be better googling maps of surrounding area/bars and phoning a few to confirm in advance if they'll be showing Cork or Celtic match.
I'm in Cork this weekend and have resigned myself to missing the last 20 mins or so of the match as the pub I'll be in will most likely switch over to the Gaelic match. By that time I hope we will be 3-0 up :-)
Nice work Paul, No doubt the cowards in the Scottish press will ignore this press release.
TALKING ABOUT THE HUNS!
They symply are a different breed from us!
Myself and two mates out in pub (watching the Dundee Utd, Rangers Cup Final last season)Rangers came back to equalize 2-2, when they did we were called all the fenien papish b****rds under the sun. Nothing to do with us at the time but we were still brought into it!!!after that day i can't stand them and i never will!!
HAIL HAIL!
Marvin,
They'll have an EPL game on. Was caught out before by that. Carvery's good though.
Jamieslegend.
You could try The Skylon Hotel on the Drumcondra road but you'll only manage the first half and even then you'd be cutting it fine. Its about 5 miles from the airport. There are bars closer but I'm not sure about them.
Pablo - if you're about. Can't get a link to the badge thingy. Can I contact you by email? I'll it post on here if necessary.
Cheers Panda Hands,
Hopefully we will be 3 up, a couple of the otherside are going as well, hopefully be able to give them pelters on the plane!

I dont think you can place too much emphasis on your figures Paul.
Is it not more likely that just like the SPL referees, the Transport Police have got it in for rangers!
Lurgan,
As far as I'm aware, you can email to CQNbadges at gmail.com
Pablo picks them up from here I think!

I'd be careful what you wish for.
Thanks to everyone's favourite airline - Ryanair - my flight time from Cork was changed by 3 hours and now I'll be lucky to get the 2nd half in the car assuming they manage to get us back on the ground on time :-(
Might do my nerves some good though...

Interesting figures indeed. I look forward to the Daily Record story from the RST saying this proves that Rangers fans are being persecuted.
Keep watching.

cheers mate ,no need for funds I am just glad for the help .If you want to stick a couple of quid on it yourself and give half to the cqn charity arm every one's a winner as they say .

Very droll!
Perhaps as a back up to the CQN badges, we could have a CQN secret handshake, that way if you are waiting on the badge being delivered, and happen to spot someone wearing one, the secret handshake would be a way of identifying yourself as a CQN member:¬)
Meant to mention this before the new article, well done to Paul as the vehicle and all the CQN drivers for the terrific work in raising money for charities. That's what being a supporter is all about.
In regards to the arrests by the BTP, are we at all surprised!
As for Sunday's game against the rears, I think Gordon might pull a bit of a surprise and start young Caddis at right back, this would nullify any wide threat for them on the left wing, just a thought.
gsu
Once upon a Tim, from my experience on Saturday I belive that Old Tim should be able to help you out with secret handshakes :-)
shurely shum mishtake.
Well done to everyone who has contributed to that magnificent amount over the summer to the CQN Charity Fund. I feel guilty that I haven't managed to contribute bar buying a couple of fine badges. Hopefully the next day out/golfing/5s/whatever I will be able to attend. If I had a hat on I would take it off to you all. I've always thought a Celtic quiz night with teams made up from the guys on here would be a good night!
I have to say I'm not surprised in the slightest about the figures Paul has unearthed.
StevieNoBread, cheers.

Did you see my reply to your yesterday's post? If not, you can see it in the previous thread.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not but 8 years ago today was one of my best days that I ever had the privileged to spend at Celtic Park in my fifty years on this mortail coil as a Tim. The 6-2 demolition of the Huns. I could not believe what was unfolding before my eyes, Sutton, KoK etal were immense, to be honest it was not till the sixth goal went in that day that I actually relaxed and thought the huns will not come back.
The reason for that dread was the year before we suffered the Barnes & Daglish Debacle plus the KoK was injured all season, just over a year from the 6-2 in May 99 I was in the same seat to watch Hugh Dallas crown the Huns SPL Champions in our own pitch for the first time in their history. The 6-2 game went a long way to ease the pains of the previous two years and heralded the MON era. To me 27th August is a pivotal turning point in our history along with stoping TIAR. I will always give thanks to MON for giving Celtic Supporters back their pride and belief that day. A day that all Celtic supporters should cherish and remember, a day that marked the turning of the tide (even though we did get gubbed in the return match at Ipox) and the day that Paul67 can say it was the begining of his "Generations of Dominoes".
May some supporters who remember and were there that day but still cry out for WGS to be fired, just remember how we felt previous to MON's arrival and that glorious day on the 27th of August 2000, we have it good now, WGS and the SSM are riding tall now for they are standing on the shoulders of giants and long may they keep on standing there keeping our football team great.
Mon the Hoops
What odds could you get for a 6-2 victory on Sunday.
Now back to work CSC
ONCE UPON A TIM
great idea with the secret handshake.
I would suggest a 3 fingered handshake to signify our 3 in a row. this would change year on year for each title we add to our "in a row". By the time we are at 11 in a row it would be a two handed hand shake with a foot thrown in to boot.....so to speak
Shug85,
look out on nike friday, but as I said if he doesnt sign then he wont be at Celtic park. :oD
Its was just gossip that was being spouted during the falkirk game from the area behind the dugout, it got a lot of chins wagging.
Paul67,
good article, keep up the pressure, were there any figures from the past to compare this years. It would be good to see how their behaviour is improving/regressing/staying the same, trends are a lot more damning.
porridgeandbananas , it was a pleasure to meet another 'newbie' CQN'r on saturday - even if briefly.
Your quiz night idea could be a runner.
Paul ,
I'm willing to volunteer to help with the organising side - it's either that or be really , really competitive trying to win and then be disappointed and 'teeth-clenchingly' magnanimous in defeat !!

unless its a uefa cup final i suppose.. thgen its mighty hard work tbh.
Presumably in this season's CQN secret handshake the fourfinger would have to feature prominently?
A CQN Quiz night sounds very interesting. I would cetainly be keen - any one else think that it might be a goer??
or we could use 2 fingers from each hand !
Paul67
Excellent article
I promised myself to try and live my life more like Tommy Burns since his sad passing a few short months ago however I really cant help but to dislike them intensely (that is putting it mildly).
Lets not beat around the Bush they hate Catholics they always have and they always will!!
I know there are many Rangers fans that are not like this but the majority (probably vast Majority) do dispise Catholics.
I wish the Scottish media would portray the poison that eminates from Ibrox on a far more regular basis.
As far as I,m concerned the media are hypocrites in Scotland they talk about being embaressed by the fact that religious intollerence is clearly prevalent in Scotland yet when Rangers fans sing the "Famine is over why dont you go home" the media sweep it under he carpet as football banter. That is but just one example.
Shame on them.
Hail Hail Roccobhoy
Onwards to 4 and more in a row.
sannabhoy - a pleasure indeed, next time though I will come over earlier. I had been sitting out in the beer garden for around an hour with my dad and bhoys as I thought it would be best for them to sit outside. I hope to make a visit after the game on Sunday as the mother-in-law booked a weekend away for her, the kids and mrs bananas on Glasgow Derby weekend! To say mrs bananas is not happy is an understatement!
Canamalar - where behind the tunnell do you sit exactly?
perhaps you could express the idea of a gigantic hidden hand, through the medium of mime.
Quiz night you say.....look no further, I run a pub quiz company & would gladly organise/supply/run anything you need.
I lurk here every day, so if I can help - let me know
I was saving the two handed shake for the season after next.
Shug85,
I have one of those child tickets and they havnt caught me yet. ;oD.
No, I dont sit there, my wee da came back from the game babbling henry's coming, age does not seem to be a pointer of maturity when it comes to the love of Celtic. Although, he does like to keep the pot stirring.
Hail Hail and I like you, hope he is as shocked as the rest of us if it happens.
Of course there are other ways that CQNrs could easily identify one another. If any of you are in the foorwear trade, we could perhaps produce CQN slippers. These could be stored at the front door of Babbitys and slipped on when entering that fine establishment. Voila, instant recognition. As a money making excercise we could expand out to say, CQN lounge jackets, cravats and pipes, thus ending the need for secret handshakes as we would all be instantly recognisable.......am I getting carried away here?
31003 @ 1.27pm
Once we get to 10 in a row, we could put the thumb of our right hand just underneath our nose and wiggle the other 4 fingers, we'd be well entitled to by then!
Narrowbhoat, totally agree. The 6-2 game was Day 1 of the new order in Scottish football.
Thanks for bringing it up, I didn’t know the anniversary was today.
Canamalar, I have no prior year info.
Sannabhoy, porridgeand, Quizking, a quiz night is an excellent idea.
Roccobhoy, amid all the comment on Scotland I don’t think we can lose sight of the fact that these matters are being policed correctly, which is more important than how they are reported.
31003 :-)
Canamalar - i sit behind the tunnell with my son, very good seats, what does your dad look like, i might speak to him.
Sometimes the board get on my wick...
They say,or you here that thay are trying to sign players, but they dont come, is it ie celtic wont pay the tranfer fee? or is it the players wage demands? to me there foging us of making us think that they are trying there hardest to get them in,but there not really there to FECKING miserable to splash the cash!!
CELTIC are about 3 million in dept, and spent 5 million in transfer's?
rodents are millions and millions in dept, and they have spent 20 million and counting, something wrong somewhere!!!
Once again excellent article Paul67. I look forward to the 4 page expose in The Daily Record detailing this...
And dont worry I am not holding my breath ;)
I was a member of a secret society once.
The secret passwords members used to identify each other were:
D.I.N.G.
and
D.O.N.G.
I'm going to write up my experiences and make more money than Dan Brown!!!!
I run quiznights in pubs in Edinburgh, the usual general knowledge/sport/tv/music mix so unless you want a themed quiz I've got loads of material/answer sheets etc.
If you organise a venue I can do everything else

shug85,
he sits on the lefthand side of the tunnel, almost middle of the section behind the home dugout.
he looks like a wee 80 year old guy with grey/baldy heed, smells of pash and slebbers, in fact an older version of me :oD)
Except he's quite coherrent and makes sense a lot of the time.
Just to P67 and the Narrowboat debate, I have to add that the 3-1 victory in the Amsterdam arena under MON was almost as important as 6-2. It definitely gave the team and fans a big dose of belief!
Are Thierry Henry and Michael Owen set to be the new Robbie Keanes of the Celtic transfer rumours, or did someone see Robbies car hurriedly driving up from Liverpool to Glasgow this morning.
For what little it is worth - I reckon Celtic's trnsfer business is over for this window and we should just about have enough for 4inarow.
Paul,
Do you know how the BTP determine a fans allegiance? It seems quite strange that a Northern Ireland fan would be in Glasgow on the day Scotalnd were playing Lithuiania.
Therags...
Maloney limped out of Lennoxtown injured today according to Evening Times news ticker.
Does anyone have any more info?
northside_dweller,
No arguments there !!!
I didn't realise it was 8 years to the day since the 'Demolition Derby'! What a day that was, though I remember thinking at half-time that it wasn't over. They had a good goal disallowed (Wallace I think) that would have made it 3-2 and they were definitely on top going into half-time. Henriks goal though will remain with me until the day I die.
That goal along with the League Cup semi at Hampden that year showed them that this was a completely different Celtic they were facing and the Little General crumbled and the dark days under Barnes/Dalglish were thankfully long gone.
Panda Hands,
I noticed you’ll be in Cork on Sunday, if you know the city well then you can ignore this otherwise…
In the city centre the Rob Roy or The Old Oak have many, many screens and will show the whole game on at least one screen before switching everything over for the football. The Rob Roy has a framed Celtic top on the wall, signed by Roy Keane, but both pubs are essentially neutral. Or as neutral as you get here in the Rebel County.
If you’re after a pure Tim pub then head up Barrack Street to a pub (whose name I’ve embarrassingly forgotten) but is noticeable mainly because it has a huge Celtic crest on the front. It’s about 1/3 of the way up on the left, just after Tom Barry’s. It’s far from the most salubrious pub in Cork but it would take a very brave soul to try to switch the tv over for the football at 2pm in there!
Dairybhoy, Rangers sold their two most valuable players this year leaving their net spend around £3m. They will also post the most profitable accounts in their history soon. Don’t be surprised if their debt figure is considerably less than you allude to.
“You here that thay are trying to sign players, but they don’t come”. Celtic signed a player last week, and the week before and the week before that.
RogueLeader, thanks. I parcelled this one up to allow the media easy access to a decent NEWS story; we’ll see.
hunza rugli, the win in Amsterdam was as great a leap in European terms.
Therags, I wouldn’t imagine it is difficult to determine a fans allegiance; remember, some fans travel to pubs to watch games instead of going to the game.
Paul 67
Excellent point, being policed correctly is by far and away the most important thing.
They still hate Catholics though!!
o1bhoy
Thanx for lowdown, though I've decided to keep my shilling in ma pocket;-)
The Narrowbhoat Tim
Indeed it was a "Perfect Day" remember as if it was yesterday!
When the third goal went in I tried to sit down as my heart was racing. Also remember that the whole North Stand was JUMPING.

A great example of excellent investigative non-lazy journalism, well done Paul67.
I'm sure many other media outlets in Scotland will also report on this.......aye right.
But it's good to see the QPR blog reporting on it in England (see it via Newsnow Celtic).
It would be a step too far for the good 'ol Establishment in One Scotland Many Cultures.

Paul67 - will there be a follow up atricle to this? Seems you have some meaty information.
I doubt these figures will include the Rangers fan arrested on Satuday for sectarian singing at Pittodrie. The offence was "f*** the pope and the vatican". Although you could here thousands singing this on Setnata, I suppose it is progress that at least one was arrested.

In the build up to the Scottish Cup Final 1970, we were going for the Treble and lost arguably our 2 most influential players at that time, Jimmy Johnstone and John Hughes. As a result confidence was low before the kick off, but King Billy settled everybodys nerves inside the first 5 minutes and as we all know went on to give them a darn good thrashing.
What's all this about Henry coming?
Are we talking about Henry the King of Kings
or are we talking about Terry Henry from Barca
or if someone's havin a laugh or about to, are we talking about

SHAUN MALONEY gave Celtic yet another Old Firm scare today when he limped out of training at Lennoxtown with an ankle injury.
Just minutes after he had been recalled to George Burley's Scotland squad for the World Cup double-header, the little striker was left in agony after attempting to challenge Aiden McGeady during a training match.
The medical team were quickly on hand and Maloney was immediately taken to the physio's room to have the damage assessed and to begin treatment.
With Scott McDonald already sidelined with a torn groin muscle and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink also missing from training as he nurses a gashed ankle which required five stitches, manager Gordon Strachan can't afford to lose any more strikers ahead of Sunday's visit of Rangers. Maloney would already have been pencilled in to start at the weekend after making an immediate impact when replacing Vennegoor half an hour into Saturday's game against Falkirk - and having a major part to play in all three Celtic goals.
advertisement
He will be given every chance to recover from this injury, and Strachan is grateful for the fact there is an extra 24 hours available as the Old Firm game has been put back to Sunday to suit TV.
But, the medical team at Lennoxtown will have to check on the player again tomorrow when the full extent of his injury is known.
Meanwhile, Birmingham are being made to wait a bit longer to find out if Bobo Balde will accept their offer of a two-year deal.
After reviving negotiations yesterday, they had hoped to conclude the deal today and the Guinean was expected in the Midlands for a medical.
But Balde instead turned up at Lennoxtown where he trained on his own.
Birmingham thought they had reached agreement with the player on a two-year deal.
Celtic are prepared to waive any transfer fee for the man who still has one year left on his contract and were hopeful that the lucrative offer from Birmingham - believed to match the £28,000-per-week he currently earns - would be enough to persuade the defender to leave.
The offer is understood to still be on the table but, as is his custom, Balde is refusing to be rushed into a decision.
Birmingham boss Alex McLeish wants an answer as soon as possible as he needs to move onto another target if the deal to bring in Balde can't be concluded.
And Celtic are every bit as keen to see the matter brought to a conclusion as they have plans to utilise the wages Balde's departure would release.
Sorry Bobby and 01bhoy - I was a year out - it was the 1969 SCF.
Paul67 - McManus69, interesting point. Not sure why the Rangers accounts are later than last year, they will certainly be a piece of good news for the club, although you have to think that information management is behind it somehow.
Logic would be that they are holding off till after the transfer window is shut (not buying more players). If accounts released beforehand there would be a clamour to buy more players from the rager fans on the back of healthy figures?

Cfczoomcfc, no news.
Dairybhoy, on walking into the first team, are we still talking about Rangers? In truth, even Kenny Miller walked into that first team, so they are hardly an example to us.
As far as Celtic’s signings go, wait and see. We could, of course, sell our two most valuable players and ensure more of our new signings would go straight into the first 11, like Rangers?
Maybe not such a good idea.
TrueTim, I missed the news about Saturday.
Kojo, I’m looking forward to it too.
the long wait is over, I believe the club make few references to O.F., any that are made I suspect slip through, however.....
While I see the point in trying to separate us from them and I have never used the phrase once here in four years, I cannot get upset by people who do use it. The term was particularly insightful when coined all those years ago and still resonates.
We will jointly be referred to by this phrase for a long time to come, even ‘Glasgow giants’ or ‘Glasgow derby’ lumps the two clubs together in a new and innovative way (is this better?).
Having given the subject some thought, I conclude that there is no escape. We must positively reinforce our own identity in the knowledge that we are linked in a rivalry with them.
Dessybhoy, the SFA are bound by different rules from Uefa.

your suggestion sounds good . We'd obviously be looking for a particularly hoops-orientated theme , e.g a section entitled 10 memorable Rears-skelpings ! or a picture section where we have to identify the nearest and dearest of past-present players (sorry Magnus Hedman will be excluded from this round!).

Now I haven't read every piece of Celtic related news that has appeared during this current transfer window but I'm pretty sure no one from the board has ever specifically said who they are trying to sign. Certainly not in the same way a certain someone identified Loovens and Breciano (sp?) as their 2 major targets.
If it is from newspapers or online forums you are getting your information about potential signings, then I would encourage you to look at Len Brennan's list where we have been linked with well in excess of 100 players. Do you honestly think that we have been in negotiations with them all only to see Celtic baulk at wage requests or transfer fees?
As for reasons why potential targets don't come to Celtic, we can only speculate. Agents and player's advisers are notorious at putting out stories about a player wanting to go somewhere if only to try and force the hand of the club and get a better deal for their player, not to mention their little cut.
CELTIC are about 3 million in dept, and spent 5 million in transfer's?
Not sure what the question is here but... so what. Why spend frivolously when we have the nucleus of a very good and successful team.
rodents are millions and millions in dept, and they have spent 20 million and counting, something wrong somewhere!!!
Don't know enough about Ranger's debts but their spending policy has got them in trouble (financially speaking) before and don't forget that they have recouped at least £16m from the sales of Cueller and Alan Hutton.

geebee1978
That's what I was trying to get at by mentioning the £16m they got back from sales, however I don't know enough about how much they have spent on players and I care even less.
I know they are our main rivals and all but I really don't understand the fascination some of our posters have with how much Rangers spend and then use every signing they make as another stick to beat the board with.
sannabhoy
good job you didn't. I have a habit of just clicking the links before checking if they are work suitable and having to very quickly close down the window.
Interesting that this British Transport Police story has been missed by the Scotland's Paper of the Year the Daily Record (Presumably only one entrant?)
Speaking of today's Daily Record I am sure that many of you will be aware that we have been linked with £3M rated striker James Brown of Hartlepool.
It is interesting how things look different depending on where you sit and here are some excerpts from today's press to prove my point.
1. Celtic have been tracking Brown, rated one of the hottest properties in English football, for some time although the youngster turned in a subdued performance at Victoria Park in front of the Parkhead boss
2. However, he has been linked with a £3million switch to Celtic and impressed against Premier League club West Brom in Tuesday's Carling Cup win.
One is from the highly credible Sky Sports who provided live coverage (without interruptions - please note Setanta) and the other is from the Daily Record - can you guess which is which?
Mort....
Very true. We have gone from being a laughing stock to Scotlands dominant force and respected throughout Europe. Rangers have gone from Scotlands dominant force to a laughing stock in all respects. I'm quite happy with the way both boards are operating thank you ;)

Just out of interest, can everyone rate their preference of what they'd like to get out this week from: A top class left back, the easiest possible CL draw, a win against Rangers.
I'll get the ball rolling with:
1) a top class left back
2) the easiset possible CL draw
3) a win against rangers
1) Beat Rangers
2) Easy champions league draw
3) Top class left back
lubo, in descending order:
1. win over rearrangers
2. easiest cl draw
3. lb
although i'm a bit greedy and would like all 3
Lubo
Easiest CL draw for me.
We can draw with them and beat them another five times this season. LB can wait until Jan.

I would go: CL draw first, then the win over Rangers, then a new left back. Given the relevant timeframes, that's the order I expect them to happen in :-)
Malceye, :-)
geebee1978, while never sure of what to believe when reading unaudited figures from Rangers, you are not far away.
Gerry, aaaaargh!
lubo1977, give me a win against Rangers, then an easy team from Pot 4 first and foremost, then a left back.
I would like to see all 3 but in order I would go for
1. Beat Rangers
2. easy CL
3. Left-back (Naylor isn't the best but he has been part of a last-16 squad twice!)
If we do sign James Brown from the 'pools, someone in the barras might make a few quid by selling these.....
http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=NFZnHEmVWKc
Hail hail ;-)
Our chances of getting a 'top class' left back are roughly one in a million (so you're telling me there's a chance) which renders that part moot. I'd settle for a confidence boosting win over the filth and adecent draw in the CL. Truth be told, I'd take any two other teams if we were guranteed Cluj (sp?) or Aalborg from pot 4.

I went with LB first, as a good quality left back could be with us for years but we can make up for not winning against rangers over the season...

As for the folk on here wondering why Pauls article hasn`t hit the tabloids, relax, theres a Glasgow derby coming up, they`ll print the bad news on the eve of the game. Surely?
swanseabhoy
if your going to wait until january for a left back then you may as well wait till next summer. or maybe the following one
First time poster ,but long time lurker. It seems the rears are stil hurting as this article has even made it on to the boards on the good old auntie beeb. Please one class signing before the wimdow closes. well done about this sight Paul.
Paul67's right when he mentions Pot 4. This to me looks trickier than Pot 2 in some respects and there are some teams I'd really like to avoid although Kaunus and the Romanian outfit may see us end our away-day hoodoo which for me is Strachans next challenge. He hasn't let us down yet....
To be fair, I wouldn't be too fussed with finishing third and having a run in the UEFA Cup. It's good for co-efficients and although it was nice to have bragging rights about getting to the last 16 again, I'd be lying if I said I didn't cast an envious eye down Ibrox way with every UEFA Cup round out of the way with our tame exit all but a distant memory....
A win against Rangers then a top class left back, the other one we can't influence plus I want Real Madrid or Internazionale.
When did we last actually have a left and right back of comparitive ability (i.e. good!) and Danny McGrain doesn't count as both!
thismancraig: jackie mac and tommy Boyd? Boyd and Mahe maybe? Although Mahe was hot headed he could play at times.
paul67, are we close to signing anyone? and are we talking to any left backs
1) a top class left back
2) a top class left back
3) a top class left back
thismancraig
I would suggest that Tom Boyd and Tosh McKinlay were of comparitive ability.
geebee1978
Seems to be a bit of a groundswell about this could be a good year to drop into the UEFA - easier to harvest co-efficient points etc.
Similarly, I'd love to see us win away. But the flaw in this scenario is that an away win and third place cannot co-exist without one or poss. two home defeats!!
Hail hail
Tinytim, no, I have not sent it to the press. There is enough information there for any who want to pick it up and run with it.
Welcome Id67.
Beaumontbhoy, you will be the first to know the news just as soon as I have it.
TootingTim.....
That may be true but I certainly wouldn't be disappointed with a place in the last 16. It's the place everyone wants to be and as long as we can avoid bottom, we can consider this another string to Strachans already considerable bow....
Paul67,
come monday when we dont have a left back, will you post an article asking, "please dont ask me about the left back" :oD
thismancraig; Tom Boyd and Tosh McKinlay were both pretty useful
I'm not sure Naylor or Wilson would lose too much sleep over keeping Tosh out of the team! Boyd I was a fan of but I think Jackie's best spells always came away from fullback.
I'm pretty sure we'll have an excellent left back by the time Boruc leaves, then it will go back to the 'problem' goalkeeper spot!
Always rated Tom Boyd but thought Tosh was well named. If I rember correctly he was on the bench in the opening game in World Cup 98. Brazil brought on Dennilson then the most expensive player in the world at the same time Scotland brought on Tosh.
Coincidently I used to work with a girl who was a ringer for him.
I never rated Tosh McKinlay as highly as a lot of Celtic fans. I remember Lubo coming deep to show for a short pass to feet from Tosh and he just waved him away and then booted the ball 70 yards into the hands of the opposition keeper. Lubo just looked at him like he was mad!
Just figured out what freddiebhoy has been up to
i feel good

Warringtim, I also used to work with a girl who was the spit of Tosh McKinlay back in about 1995. Are there are a few of these around, do you think, or could it have been the same one?
Oneantonrogan
Did she play netball?
TootingTim
I would rather have last 16 appearences than UEFA cup regarless of the coefficient.
THEMANWITHTHEBOYBANDLOOKS
Tosh was a far far superior player to Naylor.IMHO.
Even Alan Sneddon was better.
From the ET tonight:
Falkirk's Michael Higdon certainly hasn't minced his words. According to him, the reason Iain Brines allowed Celtic's first goal after the ball had clearly come off Stephen McManus' arm was because the ref must be a Celtic fan. That being the case, would it be wrong to assume that the reason Higdon's opening day penalty against Allan McGregor was so inept was because he must be a Rangers fan?
FadingparanoiaCSC
I'm seeing a wee advantage to re-signing maloney, it shows the rest of the lhads that because they leave is not necessarily the end of their dreams, I seen kenedy is considering a permanent move, now since the maloney thing, he may consider that if he can prove himself at another club getting the first team games, permanent or otherwise, a reputation can be made, do well enough and his dream could come again.
1) league won by xmas
2) mrs hedman

sannabhoy,
Got your e mail, but the gremlins won't let me reply just now, that's what I get for using "Orange".
I'll be in touch

powafish,
I've got an invisibility cloak
John Kennedy says he is enjoying his time at Norwich and would consider a permanent switch if Celtic decided to let him go.
The defender is on loan from the SPL champions until January and Kennedy admits he would welcome a permanent move to Carrow Road if he was told he did not have a future at Parkhead.
"I think that's going to be up to Celtic and Norwich, but obviously I'm enjoying my time here so far, so long may that continue and you never know what is around the corner," said the Scotland international.
"At the end of the day Celtic isn't where everything stops. I think you have to look at yourself and if it's not going to be there, then you have to move on elsewhere and get your career back on track.
"But I think we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. We'll know nearer the time, in January, a bit better what is going to happen."
For me it’s any European football after Christmas, Uefa or champs league.
I remember as a teenager just wanting to be there in the thick of it instead of going out to any mid level European team, Hamburg, Zurich etc.
It’s a huge credit to MON and WGS that for me the bars been raised to that level, any time we go out before Christmas I’m now bitterly disappointed and even shocked.
If you had of told me that ten years ago I’d have tried to tap a draw of whatever you where smoking!
canamalar, can i borrow it? i want to break into the eufa cup draw tomorrow and play with the balls
Warringtim, I honestly can't remember her extra-curricular activities. This was in Glasgow, think she might have been a student at either Strathclyde or the Tech. We were summer volunteers for a well-known charity at the time. She had the Tosh McKinlay haircut as well, it wasn't just her face, though that was uncanny as well. Same first name as Mr Naylor!
paul67 interesting article but have i missed the relevance, is this a bit of spin to perhaps mask the activity that surely must be going on.
Whilst delighted by the show against Falkirk in the final 2 thirds of the game even the most biased of fan would have to agree we looked pretty poor and one dimensional until Jan was injured and wee shaun came on.
We as a team have been in dire need of a quality left back for years. Whilst wilson has not played badly his unfortunate injury worries mean that a left back needs purchased.
We also lack competition of proven quality at Centre half and would benefit from an older head to guide the cbs we have onwards.
Crosas looked good but unless maloney is the attacking midfield player we all need the current midfield centre pairing looks off balance. However another attacking midfield player would be nice but a bonus.
We saw how much better we played when pace was added up front. If maloney is for the midfield then another striker is a must. i hear we are selling skippy for £6 million to everton and buying fletcher from hibs is there any truth in this?
I am not bothered about the huns overspend or our net spend what concerns me is the rectifying of long term problems.
I hope we buy a left back and a striker but we will still hump the huns with the present squad.
powafish,
for such a noble cause, of course you can, now where did I put it :oD
the punchline was worth setting it up for you ;-)
george,
where did you here the everton gossip?
Canamalar........lol
Why would John Kennedy what to go to Norwich permanently? He must have been really impressed with the pedestrianisation of the city centre to come out with that
A cunning plan ? (aka Baldrick and BlackAdder) assuming the worst and we were paried with Shaktar Donetsk again.....provided we squeeze past them to qualify 2nd for last 16 or worst case scenario 3rd place drop into UEFA Cup.....would we then hold the "indian sign" which could persuade Mozart/Ratz to join the generation of domination at Celtic Park in January 2009.....
every dark cloud may yet have a silver lining or shall i look out my tin hat for having the audacity to suggest we will be Done-for thE TaSK in the draw yet again ?
According to SSN, Bobo is minutes from a move to Birmingham.
cheers powanfish, sorry about the bad name spelling. an oldie but a goldie eh.
Has everyone forgotten Lee Naylor's first season, when he was shortlisted for player of the year? With all the mumping and moaning going on, anyone would think he was a total haddy when we signed him, not that he's had a massive drop-off in quality over the last year. While I agree that we could do with more adequate cover than that afforded by Mark Wilson and his porcelain legs, I still wouldn't be calling Naylor's taxi just yet. I'm still hopeful he can "do a Caldwell" and sway opinion back again.
Mort
I think we belong in the big cup too. But, pragmatically speaking, is it not true that Re-ars amassed many more co-efficient points by the time they hit the semis last year than we did by getting to the last 16? What I'm driving at is that a good run in the UEFA may help us to get into Pot 2 in th CL draw, which might help us to get further along than last 16.
Hail hail
You've surpassed yourself with this one Paul !!!
Talk about pulling one out of the hat :o)))
"But it's an Old Firm" problem don't you know ???
Been out and not had time to read back but I'd just like to say to all the posters that have passed on their good wishes ........Thanks !!!
And I'd just like to re-iterate, the Paypal option will be available when the "link" has been attached to the main page.
Also, can anyone in the know let me know if the suggestion of leaving badges behind the bar in Babbity Bowsters is an option ? I know I've been told that the owner, or his brother is a big Celtic Mhan but I wonder if he'll be prepared to take on the responsibility !?
pablophanque
dannybhoy,
first team football and a chance to be No.! in the pecking order, a decent season and he is sold up to the next level, a couple of years and he could be back with us as a 1st team player, as it stands he is way way down, way on down.
Gordon J
He must be at Cannock services then? ;-)
gweedorebhoy,
Why is it that when we talk about anything other than transfers then it is spin. When we have no news...and lets face it...Paul does not work for CFC. Yes he has contacts and yes he knows more than he puts on here, but there is only so many times he can say the same stuff over and over again.
I, personally, think it is refreshing to have something other than transfer gossip to talk about. If we sign someone, we sign someone, if we dont we dont....going on and on about it and posting the same stuff day in day out is pointless.
When Paul has news that he can share, he always does...in the meantime, lets talk about something different.

Work in edinburgh all the hibes boys are talking about it
linked to riordan going back to them
But i am doubtful how could they afford riordans wages

Im not getting at paul67, just a gentle hint that perhaps there are things going on behind the scenes that some will like and some will not. We will all soon see what unfolds.
Paul67 does a fantastic job for celtic and the supporters
gweedorebhoy,
how the hell would anyone in edinburgh know about MacDonald to everton ??
thats as reliable as my henry tip what I got from a slebbery octogenarian. ;oD
anton rogan 5:17 pm I do admire Lee Naylor and would prefer that we retain his services Lee has already expressed the desire to move closer to his family down south but had agreed to stay until replacement cover has been brought in. This may not be a bad thing because if he plays in the CL and moves in January then we could expect a higher fee irrespective of whether Lee's initial contract expires next summer. Whilst lee naylor has made mistakes he has also played an important role since he joined, when i watched the St Mirren game I noted that he was always available to take the ball from Artur and was often the preferred outlet from the Holy Ghoalie. Moreover lee made a very impressive break into the box from which he sustained his current injury. The lhad loves playing for us and has been under considerable pressure since his wife and young daughter returned to the Midlands having failed to settle in Glasgow
STANDING UP FOR LEE MAYLOR CSC.....KNOWS HIS LIMITATIONS, DOESN'T HIDE, HAS PERFORMED REGULARY AT CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LEVEL WAS A STEAL AT ca 250,000 and will be not allowed to leave for less than 1.5 Million

there are many slebbery octogenarians in edinburgh.
I think its tosh myself thats why i asked the man in the know
gweedorebhoy,
what are they saying about henry ??
.
Just Watched the McGeady Video....Didn't realise he was dropped for 11-12 Games after the Artmedia and Motherwell Games....
Then Came Back Like a Prodigal Son 1 Week before the Orc Game played a Blinder then became a Hunskelper in the Aformentioned Tie Hmmmmm....
o1bhoy
ps Where in Glasgow does he come from....????
lubo1977
My list would be:
1) beat the hun - bragging rights and another nail in the coffin for them (just how many nails are needed to close that casket?)
2)a nice easy CL draw - for once
3) quality left back - if LN was staying this would be much lower than 3
UNEW MIKE: I agree with you, Lee Naylor has had so much stick off the support that I think is totally unwarranted. Sure, he had a couple of bad games which set the baying hounds after him. For a short while I was one of them, until I got a bit of perspective. Overall, as you have pointed out, he was an excellent signing by GS.
Hail Hail

Canamalar, indeed.
Gweedorebhoy, write what I want to write about and am perfectly entitled to discuss today’s topic.
This is a persistent theme from some, that somehow if I write about a topic, it will lead the minds of others, perhaps with less ability to concentrate on the ‘real issues’, from noticing an important topic I would rather they forgot about.
Knowing the CQN demographics as I do, I suspect there are very few, if any, readers so easily led.
Pablo, thanks. Delivered with impeccable timing (on this occasion).
Johnny Mac, good point. Are people really keen for CQN to follow the tabloid route of a transfer headline every day? It would add more readers. For a while.
My Preference
1) Macaroon Bars being sold in the stands again
2) Beat Rangers
3) Easy CL draw
4) New LB
5) JuicyFruit Gum being sold in the stands again
Bate are drawing 1 all with levski at half time but have had player sent off. they are 2-1 up. agg.
Ulster-Celt
I meant to mention before, well done to those who contributed to the CQN charity fund. You are all true Celts, in mind and spirit.
Paul67, It would be great for us ex-pats to have a Paypal (or similar) account that we could contribute to the various charitable projects through. Any chance this could be organised?
I will buy one of pablos badges when his Paypal thingy is setup

first post so be gentle! rumours and rumours abound about who (if anyone) will be next at CP a left back must be first on the list, will it transpire? who knows but without any inside info Id suggest its not for the lack of trying by the SSM

Well done QCN'ers on a great display of charity ( from the previous blog )
Kudos to the annonymous presenter of tickets.
It warms the cockles of my wee heart every time Celtic and Charity are mentioned.
Keep up the good work guys and i welcome the paypal option as it will give me a chance to add to the kitty for afar.

Dublin Bhoy at 5:39 this season is only 3 games old yet already Andreas Hinkle has become the new Paul Telfer, Lee Naylor.....why oh why do we need to single out 1 player for the collective responsibility for our defensive mistakes. Just because Andreas Hinkle is not blessed with Usain Bolt's speed does not mean he deserves dogs abuse....we were all delighted when Andreas signed. When Herr Hinkel is fit the experienced german international with no shortage of technical ability is one of the first names on Gordon Strachan's team sheet.Understandably given his lack of playing time in the previous two seasons and the relocation to Glasgow perhaps Andreas like others is still adapting to the celtic playing system and team formation. Those clamouring for Metzelder and Madlung would do well to remember the highly competent and highly regarded german international who joined celtic in January

believe it or not, the airport might show the game in the departure lounge. they often show setanta games on the sunday afternoon, usually EPL though. only thing is, if you take a punt on it and check in, if it's not on, yer stuck in the lounge for 3hrs... although, airport beer does taste 100x better than normal beer. or is that only on flights going out on holidays rather than coming home?
coachman's might show it. quinns on drumcondra road (you'd be 20mins in taxi from airport) will be showing it, though likely on one tv only as the cark v keeery game is on.

One of the enduring mysteries of watching football in eng-ur-lish grounds in the 1980s was the near-ubiquitous presence of Wagon Wheels, usually to the exclusion of all other similar products. This at a time when they weren't to be found in the shops.

In the sixties at Parkhead it was exclusively Macaroons and JuicyFruit in the Celtic end, I think it was raw meat that was sold in the Jungle, I was always in the Celtic End behind the goal, had a sweet tooth as a child.
I've heard mention of this before. Didn't the vendor have an idiosyncratic sales pitch which was oft-mimicked?
everybody,
can we get drawn with florence? my favorite holiday destination.
The last time I was there I managed to get a ticket for a milan game, so I bought a train ticket to milan and at the station whilst purchasing said rail ticket, the teller told me that Celtic always loose, so I think you all know where I want to go with this one. innit.
I remember the macaroon guy going up and down the crowds at Hampden as late as the early 90s. It'd be brilliant if you had pie guys going up and down the steps at Parkhead, though they'd be sold out by the time they got up to where I sit.

Have to agree with you on Andreas too. With the type of stick he and Lee gets from his own support who in their right mind would want to join Celtic?
That said, they both better stop the (very) occasional hun attack coming their way on Sunday :)

I don't hear Hinkel getting as much of a slagging as Naylor/pre-last-7-games version of Caldwell, is it perhaps because he cost some money and didn't come from the Championship/SPL? It's not where you're from, it's where you're at! Actually, that argument kind of falls down with Donati, doesn't it?

lhads,
its still early doors, hinkle and naylor have plenty of time to develope their own following, although granted, naylor has got a head start on hinkle, I'm sure we wont let him down. Look how quickly caldwell developed his following last year, and how hard it is to shake off. Big evander another good example. McManus has a steadily growing following too. caddis is too slight as is naka and aiden, hartley doesnt have the stamina and robson looks funny, JVOH is too slow and cumbersome and MacDonald is too mouthy and greedy as is McGeady. maloney is a wee mercenary who should have never been allowed to darken our door again. Brown looks like he's been schooled by graveson and donati is stage struck. Doumbe and Wilson are made of glass and strachan that wee ginger wretch who tormented us in the 80's, should never be forgiven for being a great wee player. (have I missed anyone :oD)
So dont fret lhads there are plenty there for all to find fault, we must also never pass the opportunity to let them know what we think in no uncertain terms, we expect the best and our pressure is harder than any opposition they'll ever meet, if they handle us they are half way there.

Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo last night you said about Mick playing some good balls on Saturday, you'r right i watched the game again and in the second half he did indeed ,one in particular to Mark Wilson.
Another thing i noticed was that Aiden sent a pass inside the Falkirk full back(2nd half)with Mark Wilson running on to it,it was a carbon copy of the move which led to Hartleys goal at Tannadice.
It was a fine example of the weight of pass/vision Aiden is capable of delivering.
Crosas impressed me even more when i watched it back on tv,head up spraying passes, air of authority, only a matter of time before he's a regular.

My dear,friend... Unew Mike
In reference to your last submission.
I will preface what I am about to say with this:
My Mantra, which I stick to and nevah evah vary... regarding my opinion concerning the right of a Celtic Player to retain his position in our Team..
is this..
" A Player in entitled to have a Position in the Celtic Eleven...
Only if he maintains a form that is satisfactory.
He is allowed only ONE... SO- SO, Performance..
Before he comes under consideration for replacement.
In the event that the So-So Performance is NOT Followed, by an IMPROVEMENT, in Form...
Then, In my opinion, he should lose his position in the Team.
I am not interested in Excuses... I hate Excuses!
We pay very well, therefore, we expect, nay..demand... that we get full value for our Buck!
To put it in a succinct manner..
Put up....of... Shut up!
I am Totally Dis-Interested in how well the Player, under the Gun, has performed in the Past... Last Week, Or Last Year..it is not of the slightest import in affecting my PRESENT opinion.
And my PRESENT OPINION is the only one that matter, to me.
Therefore...
In my honest opinion..
Mr.Naylor is turning in Performances that are FREQUENTLY...most unsatisfactory.
I am displeased, by his persistence in giving the ball away too cheaply..
That, really is my main concern..when I am judging the woith of a Player.
All players can turn in a satisfactory performance when they are displaying the other segments of their undoubted footballing skill..
Howevehhhhhhhh...
Once a player shows to me that he has this damning propensity of either displaying poor passing ability.. accompanied by the cardinal sin of GIVING THE BALL AWAY TOO CHEAPLY...and is unrelentently persistent in this....then
I take a very dim view of his ability to remain in Celtic's Plans.
I have noticed that once a Player aquires this predilection of Giving the Ba' away too cheaply... he is nevah evah able to break this demoralizing habit.
Therefore, he is of no further use to us.
My criticism of Our Right Back..Herr Hinkel is of a different hue...
In that the German..very seldom gives the ball away too cheaply...
His weakness appears to be a Mental One.
His slowness of Thought is only exceeded by his slowness of limb.
Also, he can frequently lose the ball, when he makes the odd attacking sortie...like he did in the last game... Not once, but Twice... He was lucky as he was caught shamefacedly out of position...but, his chestnuts were saved by a colleague in each of those embarrassing occasion.
He has been not infrequently responsible for getting caught out of position, when he has failed, to adequately mark his man..especially during opposition Free kicks and Corners.
In short or in long...
I am feeling less than comfortable. in anticipating, how Herr Hinkel will perform against the G.A.in Sunday's upcoming confrontation.
The G.A. are notably deadly at stealing a Goal..against the run of Play...at Corners and Free Kicks.
There is no doubt whatsoevah, that Young Caddis should be our Permanent Right Back...
He is everything the The German is not..
Caddis is Swift of Limb, Swifter in building a profitable Attack... and most importantly... Much more Swifter of Thought, than the Lackadaisical German.
Kojo.

Terry O'Neil,
crosas did look good, but I dont remember him recieving a tackle, hopefully he will still stand up and show after a few tasty tackles, but I reserve my judgement till then.
I really though that maloney brought exactly what I wanted to see in aiden, the passing game, aiden had people up with him and the passing bit to his game got healthy exercise, between aiden, wilson and maloney their interchanges on the left had falkirk all a tizzy. I hope to see a lot more of this from aiden.

I did notice someone suggesting that today, the 8th anniversary of 6-2, was the start of the GoD. Wholeheartedly agree with that! I was at the game that day but my wife still remembers the words of A. MacPherson from his commentary that beautiful summer's day:
"It's an annihilation!!!"
Can I also just say that today is our 3rd wedding anniversary and I did manage to mention 6-2 in my speech that day! We were, however much too distracted by the days events to look back too much about it... as we were still laughing from Ivan Sproule's hat-trick at Ibrox that day!

Agree with Kojo re AH...
He has been not infrequently responsible for getting caught out of position, when he has failed, to adequately mark his man..especially during opposition Free kicks and Corners.
In short or in long...
Those early Higdon snapshots came from the right-back position. AH stood and watched.

re the spearmint chewy and macaroon bars.
i've an auld tape of celtic songs - goes back to mid-late 80s i think. it has a song on it called "spearmint chewing gum and macaroon bars"... it's been 10yrs since i've listened to it, but i can still recall the words and tune.
bazzabhoy/jamsiesabellend, next time i make it to the celtic dance, i'll give it a blast. in the key of D obviously.
Last Saturday our bus was halted for half an hour next to the self-styled "Greatest Pub in the World", The Louden Tavern.
During the time we were there, three thirty- something thugs stood menacingly outside. Every Celtic fan who approached crossed the road to avoid walking past them.
Three or four young lads, of about 16 or 17 must have made a remark to them as one singlet wearing yahoo began to walk across the road towards them.
One of the youngsters was clearly mocking this fellow, but it was obvious that he would not catch up with them before they reached the police who were at the crossroads.
We had to sit there under the boorish gaze of these types until the traffic cop deigned to let us make a right turn.
Is this, a civilized country? Is this, this day and age?

The British Transport Police (BTP)may have poor statistics for Ragers FC in the report but they seem to have a worry in particular concerning the Oban traveling support.

bobo argument,
it dont matter what he could be earning, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, simple as, lhads. If we want him to go, then its fair we pay him what he is due, without demeaning ourselves. We agreed to pay him, regardless of our motives. Pay the big man everything he's due and thank him for his services, he is a very intellegent man by all accounts and therefore knows better than us his biggest blunders, and probably regrets them. I would much rather we did not sour the taste for an intellegent and sucessful man setting out on the next stage of his development. No a good idea methinks.

craggy island gaa, it sure was an annihilation.
Coincidentally enough, I was married a few days after the 6-2 game, which also featured heavily in the speeches at my wedding: Kevin (Best Man) “I looked over at Paul earlier and wondering if I had ever seen him this happy. Then I remembered Sunday.”
Freddiebhoy, indeed.
Optimist,
my experience is that you can usually download it again and it works for another 30 days, or depending on the version, you can just click ok to use the evaluation version.
Alternatively download a trial version of winrar from www.rarlab.com
hope that helps

Ah! The engima, that is Massimo.
As you know or do not know, it does not matter a whit..
I have several contacts, who at the present time are members in good standing of the Celtic Coaching Staff.
Bearing that in mind... I therefore receive from time to time to time... reports on certain things, most of which shall remain unpublished...
Howevvvvvvvvvvvvahhh..
Amongst the reports that are for publication.. the observation made by Mr. Lennon, has also been reported to me.
Donati is THAT GOOD... Malheureusement... only, it seems in a protected environment... in SCOTLAND.
Anywhere,in Europe he would be fine...in fact, anywhere, that is safely oceans away... from the rumble and the tumble and the crashing from behind tackles.. that is the norm that takes place in a typical S.P.L. encounter.
That being said..
I had been a fierce critic of Mr.Donati... and he has the scars to prove this..
Howevvvvvvvvvvvvah..
As I have informed , ad nauseam... I am nevah eveah MARRIED, to an opinion...
As circumstance change..
THEN, IT FOLLOWS NATURALLY...
MY OPINION SHALL ALSO CHANGE, COMMENSURATELY... IN TANDEM.
I always endeavour to make it perfectly clear whenevevah I am voicing an opinion of a Player...That the opinion that I am stating is a PRESENT ONE.
To return to the stem of the story.
I have observed that Mr.Donati,in the small number of his performances that I have witnessed, in his RECENT APPEARANCES..
I SAW A VAST IMPROVEMENT IN HIS TACKLING AND OVER-ALL DEMEANOUR.
This, naturally led me to begin to WAVER ,in my former Steadfast Belief..the Massimo was entirely unsuited to the type of soccer that is practiced in these Heathered Locales.
I saw IMPROVEMENT... which is another Pillar to be found in my TEMPLE Template,by which I judge a Players PRESENT WOITH.
I am a Sucker ..and weaken in my former Condemnation of a Player...
AS SOON AS I SEE that... HE IS IMPROVING!
Having said more that I should... I will end this missive with the following...
I would soitenly retain the services of Massimo... I can see the foist glimmerings, that HE IS FINALLY SETTLING DOWN..
For his skill and his accuracy in supplying a defense splitting Long Pass..is not to be sneezed at.( Noses again!..ed)( Seems I can't write anything, without running into a Nose..which I hope is not running!)
Massimo?
He.. I am beginning to LIKE!

We got married the day before the 2-0 Ibrox game in 2001 (Stan scored the first, Thommo right at the end), and the best man (a fan of Them) read out a fake telegram from "wee Barry and Big Lorenzo" hoping that married life didn't get off until a good start until after 2 o'clock the following day.
First day of married life, woke up in our hotel. "So, start of honeymoon, what shall we do today?" said the other half. "Don't know about you" I said "I'm off to the hotel bar to watch the match". Start as you mean to go on, eh? We also had to sort our honeymoon in order that I got back in time for the re-arranged CL game against Rosenborg postponed after 9/11. Priorities-R-us!
Paul67,
after we've monopolised the media investment opportunities and developed them as far as we can, we can look in other directions for investment. How about the second phase of Lennox castle includes a five star hotel/spors clinic facility with adjoining open standard golf course, with the aim of attracting a masters tournament. We might even attract the likes of the cruciate men from america or someone trained european branch, we have the advantage that in a major emergency, we have acute backup on tap.
or maybe we should just invest in the team ;o)
liverpool fans signing a song to the tune of "the holy goalie", where did that tune come from? or is this just another in a line of our songs nicked by them?

Kojo Hinkel will have joined your band of fair-headed boys before the season is out sticking to my guns on this one and they ain't kalashnikovs an ther nae water pistols either ! As I said in the original post those of you who would clamour for a Madlung or a Metzelder would be advised to take the planks out of your ain eyes first and see the seasoned German International who was prepared to leave his spanish comfort zone and strive to proove himself in the harsh and barren scottish wasteland......knowing full well that other big name stars and "alleged" wow signings (TG anyone) had crossed from spain and failed to cut the mustard. Was the much heralded newly appointed Muscovite Signor Marko Bassa prepared to test his mettle in similar fashion.....did Tamas really have the stomach to endure such a trial by the baying celtic hordes.....
And another thing before we jump on the E-Tims band-waggon and criticise the lack of ambition from our board of directors...lets get real who's to know that the gerbil from Dontesk was not prepared to forsake the oligarch's money for a bleak scottish winter with limited meaningful games in the spl each season.....lets qualify our fantasmagorical dreams of icemen, beyonce and barbarellas...wake up and smell the coffee remember the realistic constraints of our playing fields......which seasoned international would really relish the thought of pitting his mercurial talents against the same bunch of hammer throwers and cloggers in a scottish back water FOUR TIMES A SEASON !
Lee Naylor also deserves immense credit he has been the predominant 1st choice Left back for the past 3 seasons and has more than held his own in the CL. Lest you rebuke Bhoy again in accordance your own variable standards remember this "a wise old indian chief often said before you judge a man walk three moons in his moccaisains"
Last but not least if the Holy Ghoalie can rise above his much heralded spat with Lee Naylor and specifically look for him preferentially to build from the back against St Mirren why can't we follow the beloved Pole's christian example and forgive Lee Naylor his momentary lapses of byegone days.....

Very interesting article on the BBC website today, about the finances of the SPL clubs (as analysed in a PricewaterhouseCoopers report, focused mainly on 2006/07).
It mentions an overall upturn in profits for the clubs. It mentions a rise in player wages. It mentions the "Old Firm" (sic) as accounting for over half this total wage bill.
Specifically, it mentions Celtic as showing the strongest profits. It mentions Hibernian's "impressive" finances, Hearts' losses, St Mirren's large rise in turnover, Dunfermline's relegation situation offset by a fine Cup run, and the debt-free status of Falkirk and Inverness.
Rangers... is a word which makes no appearance whatsoever in the BBC article, either in terms of profits or of losses, save in the context of Hibs' incomings (i.e. Kevin Thomson to Rangers).
How very interesting. How very strange.

It would appear our failure to agree lies in the Differing Standards,by which we separately invoke, in the passing of judgment of an acceptable or unacceptable playing performance.
My standards are most uneasy in the company of your own.
Therefore...
We must bow to the inevitable.
In the passing of judgment, concerning any players, who are under discussion,we are bound never to see eye to eye.
Kojo.

Optimistic Little Soldier - if you are using XP or Vista, uninstall Winzip and the OS will allow you to work with .zip files directly. No need for any 3rd party stuff. If you're not using XP or Vista, consider 7-zip (Google it) - very good and fast, well recommended.

John Reid: Celtic`s Terrier Chairman
He may not have many friends on here, apart from those who voted for him of course, but installing John Reid as the chairman of Celtic was a masterstroke by Dermot Desmond, the Irish businessman who pulls the strings at Parkhead.
Occasionally, we`ll hear a rare interview from Desmond, but for the most part, the talking at Celtic is done by Peter Lawwell and John Reid, the latter a seasoned politician and former cabinet minister, a pillar of the new Scottish establishment.
Tony Blair`s wife, Cherie, wanted John Reid to stand for the leadership of the Labour Party, such was her dislike of Gordon Brown, but for whatever reason, it never came to pass and he`s now the main man at Parkhead, a position he`ll no doubt relish and exploit.
His arrival didn`t meet with the approval of an element in the Celtic support which saw him as some sort of warmonger, and he`ll no doubt be motivated to show them that his Celtic credentials are impeccable, and that he`s the right man for the job.
I have to say, I think he is the right man for the job, but not necessarily from a Rangers point of view. He`s a tenacious and articulate troubleshooter who knows the score at Celtic, and Rangers too, and will, for the most part, be an asset to his club.
I saw a televised interview which he gave to a fairly well-known Scottish journalist, and it was like a pupil interviewing the headmaster. I can`t imagine any of our sporting scribes being happy to cross John Reid when the occasion demands it, and this is an example of Dermot Desmond showing more wisdom in the running of Celtic than Sir David Murray is demonstrating at Ibrox.
It could be credibly argued that Reid is the best man for the chairman`s job at Celtic, and he`s there on merit after all, not because he bought the club. Over at Rangers, we have a chairman of personal courage, and with an astute business brain, but the intellectual power at Celtic dwarfs anything on offer from the knighted one and his sidekick, and that gives Celtic a significant advantage.
The Celtic of Reid and Lawwell will be bullied by no-one. They are happy to make the case for Celtic in the face of any opposition which comes their way, and there won`t be much in the way of criticism from journalists, broadcasters and officialdom in Scottish football while this pair are top guns at Celtic.
If Spiers had directed his mostly one-sided criticism at Celtic instead of Rangers all these years, and that`s extremely difficult for us to imagine, would John Reid have sat tongue-tied and silent while his club and its support were publicly ridiculed?
Dermot Desmond is doing at Celtic what Sir David Murray is not doing at Rangers, putting the best people in the top jobs. John Reid is a terrier, unafraid of confrontation and argument, eager to support the club which represents his cause as best he can, and he possesses the intellect and bottle to do it.
Is there a Rangers-minded John Reid?
We could certainly do with one.
Squeaky bum time at Liverpool, although they should already be out after that 1st half.

you'd have to see it to believe it, and im not saying everyone who supports an epl club has the same view but there is a lot of muppets out there happy to see us fail...it beggars believe but there you go...

there maybe other reasons???? Seems to be the way in Cork anyway

Boa noite,
I know this is non Celtic related (unless we draw Real Madrid or Chelsea tomorrow) - I'm sitting here watching the Arsenal v Twente CL game on ESPN Brasil and the commentators are adamant that Robinho will sign for Chelsea before the weekend. The way they're speaking it's as if it's a done deal.

Im_from_Cork_bhoy
Cheerz for that.
My dear,dear,dear,friend... Kikinthenakas
Master Wilson.
I am totally unimpressed by his performance,as well.
He is only marginally better that Mr.Naylor.
He is fine to retain in the capacity of a Back- up , full Back.
He is also very suspect in imparting a telling ball, to a colleague.
He has the " gien the ba' away syndrome" to a minor extent.
Again... a Big No- No, in my estimation.
As I have remarked previously this syndrome is quite stubborn to dispense with, once it is in situ.
Unfortunately, we are not very flush in the ready made replacement department..concerning either of our Two Full Back Positions.
Wilson's only redeeming feature is that he has youth on his side.
Therefore, there is hope for him, yet.
In my type of endeavour by which I earn my daily corn.. I have learned to nevah, evah .. settle!
And that is what most Celtic Fans are doing when they are presented with making a choice.
To be satisified with shoddy and slipshod Performances,as these two worthies both turn in .... To be fair...Mr.Naylor in that competition is way,way out in front of Mr.Wilson...
Nevertheless, most Celtic Fans, in my opinion on reading their opinions vis a vis the performances of these two players...
Are Settling for Mediocrity...
Which I cannot do, even if my life depended on it.
Na...
Celtic's Playing Standard must be only equated to Excellence...
And that is all she wrote.

As a young teenage bhoy Yootha was a personal favourite of mine and I still tune into the Comedy Channel to gaze at her wondrous delights! What a gal!
Is she dead? Is George still alive?
lurgan53,
read it, it dont change nothing, it reaffirms my opinion that he will do as he's told and if that ment winding up Celtic, the task would be carried out with the same vigour as any other. However I agree on PL, I also expect he would resign, if he was tasked to oversee the decommissioning of Celtic Football Club.
nough said from me on this issue ok, stop trying to bate, most including me are sick of it.

Unless I got the point your were making wrong - yeah I agree
I have no right to deny anyone their right(?) to rip into their favourite scapegoat player/manager.
Hardly supportive though. More undermining seems to me.IHMO
I am sure it all makes the player/manager feel much better.
I agree also that it is the most intense pressure.
If we are on the same side why heap pressure on our selves?
I went to most Celtic games from 1966 -75.IMHO, It was the same then from what I remember, some players - Tommy Callaghan - for one I remember used to get dogs abuse
Yeah, we are all entitled to air our views, God forbid we see an end to that freedom.
I just don't see why that approaches helps.
Maybe God should have the last word on it.

Gordon_J,
Couldn't agree more re the Liverpool game; Isn't it great to be sitting back, relaxed, knowing we are securely into the draw tomorrow ?
Have to say, though, that last years Spartak tie was something special; always knew we would do it, never a doubt in my mind. :-)
Im_from_Cork_bhoy
Those (from Cork) who want see the Celts get beat are jealous of the Celtic support in the South (all over) of Ireland. It happens all over, just human nature I suppose.
I used to live near Reading in the South of England and the bloke who ran the local pub (where we had our Celtic do's) went on a golfing break with his son to Cork. He ordered a taxi on the evening to take him into "any pub in Cork which had a bit of live music" (we introduced him to some celtic/ Irish tunes). The band was brilliant he told me but it was a Celtic pub and the band were playing Celtic songs....brilliant (he's a Spurs fan).
He brought back a CD and would stick it in the juke box when it was a late drinking session.
This is why I've always fancied going to Cork as I picture the "rebel county" as also being a Celtic county.
Good luck Sunday

Just in from the reserves and our left back was ...... Jo Doumbe played well amd scored. McCourt had some lovely touches but still doesn't look 100% fit. Caddis had a good game particularly 1st half and Millar looks good. All in all a good £3 spent (ok £5 if you include the coffee and bridie!!)

Just thought i would gauge opinions from you nhoys on here to see what you thought?
Maissy Dribble, what a great post from FF. It just goes to show they are not all knuckle draggers. This guy has given a very astute summary of the Celtic board, he forgot to mention that although no longer Chairman, we have one of the most respected bankers in the UK in Brian Quinn still working with us.
I would go as far as to say we have the best board of any team in Britain. We may disagree with the fiscal policy but as a board, they are extremely strong.
So the question guys, if you had the choice 20 years ago, would you go down their route and get the players they had, 9 in a row, perfporming in Europe etc, or our route of torture during the 90's to get the generation of dominance we have now. During the 90's I used to think we would never get the better of them.
My answer, in hind sight, I will take the Celtic route even with the 90's torture, (although I probably wouldn't have said that during the Hampden season !)
Vman...This may end up a daft question but has your brother got a wee break at the moment due to a fitba injury?
Think Flecther would be a great siging as well. Really rate lad, and playing with better players would bring him on a ton. Young Scots in the team that Flethcer, Maloney and Brown would bode well for ud in the future. Would certainly have the creme de la crem of Scottish talent.
Although i'm saying Flecther would be a great signing, i crave for us to try snd widen our search. In the last few years it looks as if he scouts have been paid for nothing and just sat watching The Full SPL for a dossier on players. :) :)
WGS I would take the 6m

Is Kennedy also staying at the Linton Travel Tavern?
v man,
that story wud have a ring of truth to it....god i hope i havent painted my city as a bad spot 4 Celtic fans to visit...we have had sum wonderous nights and i hope it continues, there can be music on after matches but sadly we dont usually get the good bands down as often as id like but thats life.. we had a charity night last year and C.A.T.B played and u cudnt get in the door, possibly 500 in a room for 300 id say...these nights are fantastic and always ones to remember....also if u counted all the members in all the clubs u wud have close to 3 or 400 members altogether which wud rank up there with any county, and i know in our particular club we had a ristricted number so as too make sure the guys who were invovled had the clubs best interests at heart, we turned at least twenty away last september...
...its not all doom and gloom in the rebel county
onwards and upwards
GordonJ, Hate more than Athletico............... Porto detest the cheating corupt scum.

Yootha dead!! Ah, that's a real shame and a great loss to teenage bhoys and 50-somethings like me.
Anyway, we've now got Kate from 'Lost' to admire (Evangeline Lilly).
The TV is not that bad despite only sporadic episodes of 'George & Mildred', for example tonight on Celtic TV we had a re-run of the 6-2 game, Henke's goal just gets better as the years roll on and Lubo's turn in the box to set up Lambo was a jhoy to behold.
WGS £6 Million - Yes if it had been two weeks ago. Now I don't think we could spend it well before the Window.
Fletcher for £3 million yes, but not a like for like for Skippy.
Evenin all.
Watchin Liverpool right now and glad we are in the group stages already.
Liverpool have been woeful, Liege on a par with woeful. Would take any of these two in the group stages, but preferably Liege.
WGS... Used to post on KDS, till I was recently permanently banned for being overly flippant (I think...no other reason I could see). You'll do okay on there if you can photoshop and don't mind reading the same topic over and over again.
Bhoydell,
I've fancied a rematch with Porto for the past few years. Maybe ...
Also noticing that Anfield appears to have no specificaly defined technical areas for the coaches. Coaches appear to be wandering wherever they want. Benitez and his opposite number were just about having a square go a couple of minutes ago.
Gordon_J @ 9:59
Agreed, amazing night - good to get the 'ol ticker pumping for a while, but you can sense the stress of the Anfield faithful right now.....
Can't wait for the draw tomorrow.
excellent benjy - skyplussed celtictv earlier so when mrs cardiffbhoy goes to bed i can watch that wi a tunnocks tea cake and a cup of tea (well it is a school night !)
come on liege for pot 4 so we can avoid shaktar again, good to hear jim beglin sick, serves him right for cheering on the filth in their rampage through europe last year
I watched the goals from the 6-2 game on the huddle tonight and was also thinking
I never get tired of seeing that Henrik Larsson goal
Did it win Goal of the Season that year?

Whilst in no way blowin my own trumpet here i was told 2 days ago that we were after Fletcher and told to say nuffink,it seems to be out there a bit now but still no main players on here are saying anything so neither will i ;)
Any news on Maloney injury scare?
Hail Hail
Gordon J, BhoyDell shurely we have too much for Porto minus Deco et al, Dynamo Kiev, Shaktar and Fiorentina would be ones to avoid though

WGS,
If we were being offered 6 mil for Scot McD, simple economics dictate that we sell!, for someone who cost us 750K to get such a return IMHO even though he scored 30+ for us last season would be a smart move.
I would think we would have to have a replacement lined up and if you could get say Fletcher for 2/2.5 mil, i would go for it, it would still give us around 2.5 mil profit.
6 mil for SMcD i have to say if true would be a great peice of business for us.
I know a lot of posters will say what is the sense in selling your top scorer now? but 6 MIL FFS, every player has his price and i think that is Scot's.

....IF there is any truth in the SMcD rumour what about the money Everton would have to pay to buy out the remaining 4.75 years ( ? ) of his contract?Would that be included in the alleged 6mil fee?
Bhoydell, that is an impossible question.
Their nine violated something we held precious about Celtic, I did not believe it would happen until it was underway.
The one difference between them then and us now, is that they were winning on tic, whereas we are the tic winning.
WizardofOz, agree that I am happy we are already in the group while watching Liverpool, but disagree with Standard Liege, who I think will give any team a test if they get there.
Gordon J, aye, bring on the Porto.
damn
Kuyt 1-0 Liverpool 117 mins
Liverpool nick it in 117th minute. Kuyt scores.
gallager,
Thought that earlier. However we need Shaun in the team therefore my instant reaction was of horror that he may miss out.
damn damn damn
GordonJ, Unew Mike, what I would give for another crack at Porto. Don't know about you guys but Seville was an emotional journey for me, didn't know if I would ever see a European final again, also the coming together of everything Celtic meant it was once in a ifetime. We done so well and their antics left a bad taste. As my old mum used to say "don't ever get mad, get even", let us get even with them, any time, just give us the chance.
Liege, so unlucky, what was the left back doing?
Paul The one difference between them then and us now, is that they were winning on tic, whereas we are the tic winning :-)
On a happier note I see that the cousins of William are out on pens!

Please give us Liverpool tomorrow.
Think this is correct:
Pot 1:- Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Man Utd, Lyon, Inter Milan, Real Madrid
Pot 2:- Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven, Villarreal, Roma, Porto, Werder Bremen, Sporting Lisbon, Juventus
Pot 3: – Marseille, Zenit St Petersburg, Steaua Bucharest, Panathaniakos, Bordeaux, CELTIC, Basel, Fenerbache
Pot 4:- Shakhtar Donetsk, Fiorentina, Athletico Madrid, Dynamo Kiev, Cluj, Aalnorg, Anorthosis Famagusta, BATE Borisov
My ideal draw:
Real Madrid
Porto
CELTIC
Aalborg
The scousers scrape it. FT 1-0
lyon
psv
bate
ulster-celt
CL wish list....
Lyon
Bremen
CELTIC
A. Famagusta
So it all comes down to Pot 4, 4 nasty ones, 4 not so bad ones.
How did basel get into pot 3 ?
Dairybhoy@12.54,with all due respect, did you really expect anything different?,not once,in all my life, have i read,or heard,an apology from that shower of scum, nothing to indicate any remorse whatsoever, for all the filth they have spouted toward us,the disgusting sectarian policy, one practised by only one club, was allowed to go on with the tacit approval of every supporter they had.I know that some will say they know of such and such who is a decent rangers fan, but,my take on that is this,if you go along and pay money to keep afloat, an organisation who's policies are as discrimnatory as rangers, then the tag of decent and fair minded should lie a little heavy on that persons shoulders.Sorry about the rant,i just can't stand them, and sometimes i get carried away.
Vman I thought it was you when I saw your post on M's mum. How is your good lady doing after the sad news?
Drop me a line through my wee spanner.... oh ah vicar.
I only saw the last 10 minutes and extra time of the Liverpool game bu tthey did not look impressive but I would still rather keep away from any English team...or Barca...or Milan.
I will take the following tommorow;
Real Madrid
Porto
Celtic
Aalborg
Should have a great chance with that draw but we will probably get;
Barcelona
Juve
Celtic
Kiev
But its great just to be there.

lurgan53,
really, you never commented? your jewel is a blood stone.
Paul, I know that like me you lived through nine in a row. I also, know like me that Celtic is more than a football team and quite frankly I would have sold my granny to stop them in the 90's . You know I have had a season ticket for 28 years now and I can remember sitting their looking at Carl Mugleton etc thinking we were a million miles from them. I remember reading the infamous Ken Gallagher article in the Herald and believing it, they were 5 years ahead of us and we would never recover.
At the time, I would have given anything to beat them, I went to The "celt's for Change" meetings at the City Hall and I stood outside Celtic Park in the teaming rain the night Dempsey came out and told us "The fight is over the rebels have won". I scraped together £640 the year I got married and was skint with a baby on the way, as I reckoned £640 to stuff the huns, cheap at half the price. (my wife disagreed................)
So if you are younger than I am, guys enjoy this, trust me it is bloody fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
Basel has a co-efficient of 51.993, only just less than our 52.013
How about:
Chelsea
Porto
Atletico
Just to add a little bit of extra spice, not that we need it!!!
And before anyone jumps on my head - I'm not saying that's who I'd want - I'd go with WizardofOz - just that it would give an extra dimension to all of our games
No second thoughts - not Chelsea - too many off field issues there!

Yes, Really. I never commented. However I am quite familiar with your posts.
I would not be unhappy with either Lyon, or Arsenal from Pot 1, for those wanting real madrid the galacticos beat sporting 5-1 in a friendly tonight
Bhoydell
Absolutely fantastic post, i spent many a year following Celtic everywhere during thier 9IAR era, the football was dire, but my happiest memories following the hoops were gained during this period watching Celtic.
I think you have to feel the hurt and helplesness that many felt during this period to really appreciate the good times now.

Friars Walk Tavern...mmmm I think it used to be run by 2 brothers who advertised in the Celtic View and were Celtic mad, that would do it for me.
Greenlion2 who ur ye? I'll guess you play 5 a side, come from Greenock, a member of the Greenock Celtic and you're in you're early 40's

Every 2nd rate and 3rd rate turn booked in here sings that song.
Sounds about right for rangers if you ask me.

I've lived through our 9iar and theirs and, like Paul67, I thought that theirs did violate something precious! That's why I want us to go on and do 10. But for two last day abberations we would be nearly there. Such is life!
Help needed.
They dont make it easy to support Celtic at times.
No new teamcard for this season. Was sent individual tickets for Man City and Falkirk. Refused entry at Man City game and sent to ticket office for Falkirk game and missed league flag being unfurled.
Still no ticket or team card for Sundays game and I am unable to attend the ticket office in person.
Any ideas ?
Thanks in advance
Martin42 - you have mail.
Gebhoy,
I get emotional about Celtic, it's more than Football for me, it's not sectarian or anything (although I did go through two job interview's were the guy made it clear I had no chance). It's about my old boy and my aunty Cathy who fisrt took me to CP, long gone but Celt's to the core.
You are absoltely right, like you I travelled everywhere when I was younger and during the 90's it was hard, but by God wasn't the camaradarie between us all fantastic, away games were incredible, the singing and the togetherness, its hard to describe here.
I can remember the lead up to Fergus coming, it sounds bonkers here, but I prayed one night he would come and was genuine, such was my despair. So I think Seville was the culmination of it all for me, we were back, by God were we back...................
Arsenal have a fantasatic new stadium, Bayern Munich havea fantasatic new stadium, we have the best stadium in Europe but nomatter how good the stadia, we all need a Cluj(i).
Arsenal FC
FC Bayern
Celtic FC
WC Cluj
I can feel it in my water.
