Transport Police report sectarian offences eradicated in all but one club
Earlier this month figures were released detailing
arrests and anti-social behaviour incidents carried out by spectators
travelling to and from football matches in England, Wales and Scotland.
Celtic Quick News contacted the British Transport Police for a breakdown for arrests in Scotland which was illuminating. For season 2007/8, arrests were down from 73 to 61, but the total number of incidents involving football fans, including those which did not result in an arrest, rose from 86 to 99.
Fans from seven SPL clubs were arrested: Rangers, Dundee United, Motherwell, Celtic, Hearts, Aberdeen and Hibernian, as well as fans from Cowdenbeath, Hamilton Academicals, Dundee, the Highland League's, Clachnacuddin, and supporters of Chelsea, Manchester United, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Two Chelsea fans were arrested for possession of drugs, Manchester United appear on the list as one of their fans was arrested for Breach of the Peace at Motherwell Railway Station. The Cowdenbeath fan was arrested for Indecent Assault, perhaps the most serious incident during the season.
Celtic, Motherwell, and Hearts each had four fans arrested during the season, Aberdeen and Hibs had three. Dundee United were the second highest offenders with six arrests, while an incredible 30 Rangers fans were arrested, almost half of the season's total for all clubs. These figures do not include those arrested at the Manchester riot in May, which British Transport Police refer to in their press release.
Including those which did not result in arrest, there were six incidents involving Celtic fans, six for Dundee United, seven for Motherwell, four for Hibernian and five each for Aberdeen and Hearts. Rangers fans were involved in a total of 48 incidents, again just less than half the total.
One striking aspect of the list is that very few fans are arrested at the station nearest their home ground, which suggests police take a hands-off approach when large numbers of fans are congregated together, most incidents occur when fans travel to away games.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the information is the complete eradication of sectarian offences from all but one Scottish club. 11 arrests were made for sectarian offences in total, 10 Rangers fans and one Northern Ireland fan; news that is bound to resonate at the SFA and Uefa, both of whom warned the Ibrox club two years ago that punitive penalties would follow unless such behaviour was eradicated.
The figures are a ringing endorsement of most Scottish football fans, although clearly Rangers have a significant problem they have failed to address; Manchester, it appears, was merely the tail-end of a trouble filled season.
You can read an account of dates, venues and nature of offences here.

WooF!
Just missed out again :-(
3rd?
Hello
Interesting stats, however I wonder what the real tally would be if those not caught so to speak had been.
No doubt this is not something you are likely to read in Ranger's official media partners.
Sorry Muppetbhoy....
Will be interested to see who picks up the press release - though not sure the breakdown will be investigated too hard.
jinkybhoy - Bon Accord a bit out the way but owner and son are good Celtic Bhoys and if you're into ale they have 10 very well kept ones (cellarman is a Chemistry teacher I think). Your first pint can be a sample of each of the ten.....
Can't believe I got a fourth! feel like a BMX'ing Olympian!
Anyway Paul, it says it all. They are way out in front. Better than us at something! Shame! All Scotlands!
I notice that the official Dignity FC website is offering a charity night in fancy dress at a price which is not 16.90. Cowboys and Injuns! Honourable cause...but I wonder how many will adopt the Blazing Saddles Theme..and turn up in KKK, Nazi, etc outfits..although most will sound like Gabby Johnston, and look more like Mongo!
Paul67,
From previous tread - any reason why Rangers annual accounts not published? Maybe Murphy is using Sunday's game as a smoke and mirror opportunity.
No probs Jackson :-) well done
Paul, I read this story in the papers earlier in the month but then heard nothing more about it. Are you just making sure it doesnt go unnoticed or has there been further press interest in this? Dont get me wrong, it should be highlighted for all to see as the figures are quite revealing but can you imagine the press frenzy had Celtic been top of the hit parade?
Paul -
So what you are saying is that Rangers had more of their fans arrested than there were for those following a medium sized western European country, i.e. Scotland?
Say it all really.
Hail! Hoots mon the noo!
Lyruc
Paul67, how has the media missed this I wonder. Hmmmmmm. oh there goes my paranoia again.

Paul67,
I´m not so sure if this is an indication of an improvement in footballing fans around Scotland or an indication of how ineffective an uninterested Scotlands finest is in actually implementing legislation. No St. Mirren or Falkirk fans arrested at all never mind for sectarian offences.
Considering how extortionate this policing costs us and the club maybe it´s something our resident expert in home affairs could consider having a wee look at.
I am of the opinion that being seconded on such police duty is not exactly a jolly but an easy shift.
Hail Hail
Paul67,
As you know I predicted 2 signings in the last week?? I'm I in with a chance??
Any news on Bobo to Birmingham? I'll believe it when I see it.
They are, simply, The Best.......
Lads,
Going to Dublin on Friday for a stag do, flying back on Sunday, flight leaves Dublin at 3:15pm, I know the airport aren't going to show the match. Is there a boozer smack next to Dublin Airport where I can watch the game??
If we as fans of CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB , can remember that at all times home and away we are ambassadors for our great club ,then we can be proud of the part we played when we are welcomed in more and more countries, cities and clubs and our fans being given a warm welcome in the future as a result
hail hail

not really all that earth shattering news about Rangers supporters ,is it?
Parkheadcumsalford
Was in this place for 3 in a row, they had the huns on one TV and The hoops on a few others. Great Atmosphere.
Easy to find too. Just along the seafront and then cut up into the old city. Ma Nolans

I have been perusing the book for a few weeks during visits to Borders (other book retailers are available) and it has certainly caught my attention. I am going to buy a copy, with cash obviously.

Canamalar - any news on the Henry signing? are you at the wind up? please dont tease me....
great article paul
it would be interesting to find out if this is reported at all in the Scottish Football Media

jamesielegend,
Honest I don't know every bar in the world but....
Unless you try a hotel bar the nearest to the Airport is the Coachmans Inn, on the swords road, they should be showing it.
The caveat being if there is an EPL game on there's a chance of it being bumped. Also they do a Carvery on sundays so there's a good chance of kids running about.
Cheers Marvin,
For the first time in my life I hope the flight home is delayed!
Paul, any truth in the Fletcher from Hibs, Riordan to Hibs rumour that has been mentioned(although not for the first time).

McManus69, interesting point. Not sure why the Rangers accounts are later than last year, they will certainly be a piece of good news for the club, although you have to think that information management is behind it somehow.
Yarranabbe Bhoy, they sure are.
Muppetbhoy, I have seen no information on the Scottish figures at all.
Moonbeams, indeed.
Awe_Naw, this is for British Transport Police venues only.
Jamesielegend, no info.
stevieo62, certainly not.

The biggest problem you may face trying to view the match is that the Cork v Kerry All Ireland Senior Football Semi Final (replay)starts at 2pm (I think). If it does I reckon that the majority of bars will show this.
You'd be better googling maps of surrounding area/bars and phoning a few to confirm in advance if they'll be showing Cork or Celtic match.
I'm in Cork this weekend and have resigned myself to missing the last 20 mins or so of the match as the pub I'll be in will most likely switch over to the Gaelic match. By that time I hope we will be 3-0 up :-)
Nice work Paul, No doubt the cowards in the Scottish press will ignore this press release.
TALKING ABOUT THE HUNS!
They symply are a different breed from us!
Myself and two mates out in pub (watching the Dundee Utd, Rangers Cup Final last season)Rangers came back to equalize 2-2, when they did we were called all the fenien papish b****rds under the sun. Nothing to do with us at the time but we were still brought into it!!!after that day i can't stand them and i never will!!
HAIL HAIL!
Marvin,
They'll have an EPL game on. Was caught out before by that. Carvery's good though.
Jamieslegend.
You could try The Skylon Hotel on the Drumcondra road but you'll only manage the first half and even then you'd be cutting it fine. Its about 5 miles from the airport. There are bars closer but I'm not sure about them.
Pablo - if you're about. Can't get a link to the badge thingy. Can I contact you by email? I'll it post on here if necessary.
Cheers Panda Hands,
Hopefully we will be 3 up, a couple of the otherside are going as well, hopefully be able to give them pelters on the plane!

I dont think you can place too much emphasis on your figures Paul.
Is it not more likely that just like the SPL referees, the Transport Police have got it in for rangers!
Lurgan,
As far as I'm aware, you can email to CQNbadges at gmail.com
Pablo picks them up from here I think!

I'd be careful what you wish for.
Thanks to everyone's favourite airline - Ryanair - my flight time from Cork was changed by 3 hours and now I'll be lucky to get the 2nd half in the car assuming they manage to get us back on the ground on time :-(
Might do my nerves some good though...

Interesting figures indeed. I look forward to the Daily Record story from the RST saying this proves that Rangers fans are being persecuted.
Keep watching.

cheers mate ,no need for funds I am just glad for the help .If you want to stick a couple of quid on it yourself and give half to the cqn charity arm every one's a winner as they say .

Very droll!
Perhaps as a back up to the CQN badges, we could have a CQN secret handshake, that way if you are waiting on the badge being delivered, and happen to spot someone wearing one, the secret handshake would be a way of identifying yourself as a CQN member:¬)
Meant to mention this before the new article, well done to Paul as the vehicle and all the CQN drivers for the terrific work in raising money for charities. That's what being a supporter is all about.
In regards to the arrests by the BTP, are we at all surprised!
As for Sunday's game against the rears, I think Gordon might pull a bit of a surprise and start young Caddis at right back, this would nullify any wide threat for them on the left wing, just a thought.
gsu
Once upon a Tim, from my experience on Saturday I belive that Old Tim should be able to help you out with secret handshakes :-)
shurely shum mishtake.
Well done to everyone who has contributed to that magnificent amount over the summer to the CQN Charity Fund. I feel guilty that I haven't managed to contribute bar buying a couple of fine badges. Hopefully the next day out/golfing/5s/whatever I will be able to attend. If I had a hat on I would take it off to you all. I've always thought a Celtic quiz night with teams made up from the guys on here would be a good night!
I have to say I'm not surprised in the slightest about the figures Paul has unearthed.
StevieNoBread, cheers.

Did you see my reply to your yesterday's post? If not, you can see it in the previous thread.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this or not but 8 years ago today was one of my best days that I ever had the privileged to spend at Celtic Park in my fifty years on this mortail coil as a Tim. The 6-2 demolition of the Huns. I could not believe what was unfolding before my eyes, Sutton, KoK etal were immense, to be honest it was not till the sixth goal went in that day that I actually relaxed and thought the huns will not come back.
The reason for that dread was the year before we suffered the Barnes & Daglish Debacle plus the KoK was injured all season, just over a year from the 6-2 in May 99 I was in the same seat to watch Hugh Dallas crown the Huns SPL Champions in our own pitch for the first time in their history. The 6-2 game went a long way to ease the pains of the previous two years and heralded the MON era. To me 27th August is a pivotal turning point in our history along with stoping TIAR. I will always give thanks to MON for giving Celtic Supporters back their pride and belief that day. A day that all Celtic supporters should cherish and remember, a day that marked the turning of the tide (even though we did get gubbed in the return match at Ipox) and the day that Paul67 can say it was the begining of his "Generations of Dominoes".
May some supporters who remember and were there that day but still cry out for WGS to be fired, just remember how we felt previous to MON's arrival and that glorious day on the 27th of August 2000, we have it good now, WGS and the SSM are riding tall now for they are standing on the shoulders of giants and long may they keep on standing there keeping our football team great.
Mon the Hoops
What odds could you get for a 6-2 victory on Sunday.
Now back to work CSC
ONCE UPON A TIM
great idea with the secret handshake.
I would suggest a 3 fingered handshake to signify our 3 in a row. this would change year on year for each title we add to our "in a row". By the time we are at 11 in a row it would be a two handed hand shake with a foot thrown in to boot.....so to speak
Shug85,
look out on nike friday, but as I said if he doesnt sign then he wont be at Celtic park. :oD
Its was just gossip that was being spouted during the falkirk game from the area behind the dugout, it got a lot of chins wagging.
Paul67,
good article, keep up the pressure, were there any figures from the past to compare this years. It would be good to see how their behaviour is improving/regressing/staying the same, trends are a lot more damning.
porridgeandbananas , it was a pleasure to meet another 'newbie' CQN'r on saturday - even if briefly.
Your quiz night idea could be a runner.
Paul ,
I'm willing to volunteer to help with the organising side - it's either that or be really , really competitive trying to win and then be disappointed and 'teeth-clenchingly' magnanimous in defeat !!

unless its a uefa cup final i suppose.. thgen its mighty hard work tbh.
Presumably in this season's CQN secret handshake the fourfinger would have to feature prominently?
A CQN Quiz night sounds very interesting. I would cetainly be keen - any one else think that it might be a goer??
or we could use 2 fingers from each hand !
Paul67
Excellent article
I promised myself to try and live my life more like Tommy Burns since his sad passing a few short months ago however I really cant help but to dislike them intensely (that is putting it mildly).
Lets not beat around the Bush they hate Catholics they always have and they always will!!
I know there are many Rangers fans that are not like this but the majority (probably vast Majority) do dispise Catholics.
I wish the Scottish media would portray the poison that eminates from Ibrox on a far more regular basis.
As far as I,m concerned the media are hypocrites in Scotland they talk about being embaressed by the fact that religious intollerence is clearly prevalent in Scotland yet when Rangers fans sing the "Famine is over why dont you go home" the media sweep it under he carpet as football banter. That is but just one example.
Shame on them.
Hail Hail Roccobhoy
Onwards to 4 and more in a row.
sannabhoy - a pleasure indeed, next time though I will come over earlier. I had been sitting out in the beer garden for around an hour with my dad and bhoys as I thought it would be best for them to sit outside. I hope to make a visit after the game on Sunday as the mother-in-law booked a weekend away for her, the kids and mrs bananas on Glasgow Derby weekend! To say mrs bananas is not happy is an understatement!
Canamalar - where behind the tunnell do you sit exactly?
perhaps you could express the idea of a gigantic hidden hand, through the medium of mime.
Quiz night you say.....look no further, I run a pub quiz company & would gladly organise/supply/run anything you need.
I lurk here every day, so if I can help - let me know
I was saving the two handed shake for the season after next.
Shug85,
I have one of those child tickets and they havnt caught me yet. ;oD.
No, I dont sit there, my wee da came back from the game babbling henry's coming, age does not seem to be a pointer of maturity when it comes to the love of Celtic. Although, he does like to keep the pot stirring.
Hail Hail and I like you, hope he is as shocked as the rest of us if it happens.
Of course there are other ways that CQNrs could easily identify one another. If any of you are in the foorwear trade, we could perhaps produce CQN slippers. These could be stored at the front door of Babbitys and slipped on when entering that fine establishment. Voila, instant recognition. As a money making excercise we could expand out to say, CQN lounge jackets, cravats and pipes, thus ending the need for secret handshakes as we would all be instantly recognisable.......am I getting carried away here?
31003 @ 1.27pm
Once we get to 10 in a row, we could put the thumb of our right hand just underneath our nose and wiggle the other 4 fingers, we'd be well entitled to by then!
Narrowbhoat, totally agree. The 6-2 game was Day 1 of the new order in Scottish football.
Thanks for bringing it up, I didn’t know the anniversary was today.
Canamalar, I have no prior year info.
Sannabhoy, porridgeand, Quizking, a quiz night is an excellent idea.
Roccobhoy, amid all the comment on Scotland I don’t think we can lose sight of the fact that these matters are being policed correctly, which is more important than how they are reported.
31003 :-)
Canamalar - i sit behind the tunnell with my son, very good seats, what does your dad look like, i might speak to him.
Sometimes the board get on my wick...
They say,or you here that thay are trying to sign players, but they dont come, is it ie celtic wont pay the tranfer fee? or is it the players wage demands? to me there foging us of making us think that they are trying there hardest to get them in,but there not really there to FECKING miserable to splash the cash!!
CELTIC are about 3 million in dept, and spent 5 million in transfer's?
rodents are millions and millions in dept, and they have spent 20 million and counting, something wrong somewhere!!!
Once again excellent article Paul67. I look forward to the 4 page expose in The Daily Record detailing this...
And dont worry I am not holding my breath ;)
I was a member of a secret society once.
The secret passwords members used to identify each other were:
D.I.N.G.
and
D.O.N.G.
I'm going to write up my experiences and make more money than Dan Brown!!!!
I run quiznights in pubs in Edinburgh, the usual general knowledge/sport/tv/music mix so unless you want a themed quiz I've got loads of material/answer sheets etc.
If you organise a venue I can do everything else

shug85,
he sits on the lefthand side of the tunnel, almost middle of the section behind the home dugout.
he looks like a wee 80 year old guy with grey/baldy heed, smells of pash and slebbers, in fact an older version of me :oD)
Except he's quite coherrent and makes sense a lot of the time.
Just to P67 and the Narrowboat debate, I have to add that the 3-1 victory in the Amsterdam arena under MON was almost as important as 6-2. It definitely gave the team and fans a big dose of belief!
Are Thierry Henry and Michael Owen set to be the new Robbie Keanes of the Celtic transfer rumours, or did someone see Robbies car hurriedly driving up from Liverpool to Glasgow this morning.
For what little it is worth - I reckon Celtic's trnsfer business is over for this window and we should just about have enough for 4inarow.
Paul,
Do you know how the BTP determine a fans allegiance? It seems quite strange that a Northern Ireland fan would be in Glasgow on the day Scotalnd were playing Lithuiania.
Therags...
Maloney limped out of Lennoxtown injured today according to Evening Times news ticker.
Does anyone have any more info?
northside_dweller,
No arguments there !!!
I didn't realise it was 8 years to the day since the 'Demolition Derby'! What a day that was, though I remember thinking at half-time that it wasn't over. They had a good goal disallowed (Wallace I think) that would have made it 3-2 and they were definitely on top going into half-time. Henriks goal though will remain with me until the day I die.
That goal along with the League Cup semi at Hampden that year showed them that this was a completely different Celtic they were facing and the Little General crumbled and the dark days under Barnes/Dalglish were thankfully long gone.
Panda Hands,
I noticed you’ll be in Cork on Sunday, if you know the city well then you can ignore this otherwise…
In the city centre the Rob Roy or The Old Oak have many, many screens and will show the whole game on at least one screen before switching everything over for the football. The Rob Roy has a framed Celtic top on the wall, signed by Roy Keane, but both pubs are essentially neutral. Or as neutral as you get here in the Rebel County.
If you’re after a pure Tim pub then head up Barrack Street to a pub (whose name I’ve embarrassingly forgotten) but is noticeable mainly because it has a huge Celtic crest on the front. It’s about 1/3 of the way up on the left, just after Tom Barry’s. It’s far from the most salubrious pub in Cork but it would take a very brave soul to try to switch the tv over for the football at 2pm in there!
Dairybhoy, Rangers sold their two most valuable players this year leaving their net spend around £3m. They will also post the most profitable accounts in their history soon. Don’t be surprised if their debt figure is considerably less than you allude to.
“You here that thay are trying to sign players, but they don’t come”. Celtic signed a player last week, and the week before and the week before that.
RogueLeader, thanks. I parcelled this one up to allow the media easy access to a decent NEWS story; we’ll see.
hunza rugli, the win in Amsterdam was as great a leap in European terms.
Therags, I wouldn’t imagine it is difficult to determine a fans allegiance; remember, some fans travel to pubs to watch games instead of going to the game.
Paul 67
Excellent point, being policed correctly is by far and away the most important thing.
They still hate Catholics though!!
o1bhoy
Thanx for lowdown, though I've decided to keep my shilling in ma pocket;-)
The Narrowbhoat Tim
Indeed it was a "Perfect Day" remember as if it was yesterday!
When the third goal went in I tried to sit down as my heart was racing. Also remember that the whole North Stand was JUMPING.
After the game we bumped into a few huns a fellow Celtic was trying to give them a slagging, but just stopped and smiled!

A great example of excellent investigative non-lazy journalism, well done Paul67.
I'm sure many other media outlets in Scotland will also report on this.......aye right.
But it's good to see the QPR blog reporting on it in England (see it via Newsnow Celtic).
It would be a step too far for the good 'ol Establishment in One Scotland Many Cultures.

Paul67 - will there be a follow up atricle to this? Seems you have some meaty information.
I doubt these figures will include the Rangers fan arrested on Satuday for sectarian singing at Pittodrie. The offence was "f*** the pope and the vatican". Although you could here thousands singing this on Setnata, I suppose it is progress that at least one was arrested.
