Celtic 3-2 Aberdeen, SPL, 27 September 2008

| | Comments (735)
Celtic won all three points at home to Aberdeen today but had to rely on one of their now-legendary late goals.

Giorgios Samaras was again the outstanding player on the field, though he was the only Celtic striker not to get on the score sheet.  Instead he did an excellent impression of a midfield ball-winner on 14 minutes, ploughing through the middle of the field chasing a ball that was never really his to win.

His perseverance resulted in Scott Brown teeing-up a chance for Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to open the scoring.

Aberdeen got a deserved equaliser after ex-Celtic, Charlie Mulgrew, came on as a substitute and was given the freedom of Celtic Park to knock a far-post cross home on 57 minutes.

Eight minutes later Mulgrew despatched a free kick into the postage stamp corner which had Aberdeen fans searching around for a suitable emotion.

Not for the first time this season the Celtic midfield were being bossed and breached which exposed alarming frailties at the back, however, the direct talents of substitute Aiden McGeady turned the game.

McGeady crossed from the right for fellow-sub Scott McDonald to nod home an equaliser on 78 minutes.

The stage was then set for a typical Celtic siege.  The planned structure of play was abandoned as players flooded forward and played early balls into the box.

On 88 minutes Shunsuke Nakamura missed a glorious chance to put Celtic ahead when he shot wide but I don't think anyone in the stadium thought the chance to win the game was gone.

The winning goal was unusual in as much as Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink found himself goal-side of Aberdeen keeper Jamie Langfield was the ball inches away and only three seconds of the regulation 90 minutes left.

Celtic Park celebrated they way we used to when beating Aberdeen in the old days.

Just to ensure we didn't forget how poorly Celtic controlled the ball and defended, the fifth minute (of the three there should have been) of added time presented Aberdeen with the chance of the season but Darren Mackie pulled his shot wide when clean through with Boruc to beat.

There are very few certainties in life.

Death, taxes and the fact that Keevins has NEVER said anything worthy of comment are the three which first spring to mind.
Didn't hear him myself, but I guess it was a quick attempt at some kind of plan B (plan A is always that JVOH is a dud from what I have heard before I stopped listening to those numpties on Clyde)

I may long to hear Scottish accents again, but pure drivel I can get here in Sweden without feeling ashamed or tainted.

Cheers

Cousin's just scored at the Emirates
its now Arsenal 1 Hull 2

(Cousin did take Gallas out after first 2 mins)

Hope Arsenal have the same game we did today.

Hi All,
Just back after a severe drenching at the game.
Quite why people leave is still beyond me. How many goals have we scored in the closing minutes to turn games? Surely someone must have a stat?
I think we played well in patches today but in defence we were rather poor. Loovens obviously needs time to settle. Hopefully Caldwell will be back for Tuesday.Good to see Skippy and big Jan on the score sheet. I think that the ball sticks to JVoH a bit more these days which is encouraging. As was Crosas today but I think he still needs to build himself up a bit.

Hail hail

Sorry I meant leave early!

AnotherAlexFraeGovan

Spot on with the analogy of rat faces comments on Snyde - He was just winding up a "JVOH hasnt scored for a while and no chance of 20 goals" comment when the big chap hits a brace.

Gotta say his workrate has improved dramatically - maybe the rotation works well for him.

I know Sammi Rass dint get on the score sheet today but his running at defences is great to watch and the other teams must be bricking it from him now. His workrate is 100% - chases every lost cause and tracks back - adding his height to our defence at corners (god knows they need it)

One thing today - Artur was a bit dodgy with both his kicking (remember the studs midweek) and cross balls.

Paul67

Actually really enjoyed todays game apart from the enigma that is Scott Brown. I used to stick up for him but again today he did little and what he did didn't help. It seem everyone can be 'rested' apart from him. Can Gordon not remember the last seven matches of last season?

Ibleedgreenandwhite, definitely not. The rain fell heavily towards the end of the game and many people moved from the front rows of the bottoms stands to seats further up, but there was no exit.

Martin42 actually mentioned how busy the traffic was leaving the game as a result of so many more fans staying until the end.

jinkysboy, there was.

bsm71, I’m trying not to become know for only having one view on Scott Brown. So I’ll not comment today.

bsm71

To be fair to WGS he benched Skoosh on Tuesday - only came on as a sub last half hour and on his performance then had to be in on merit today

o1bhoy
0-1 over there will do me!

Enjoy your posts!

Just back from the game, Mark Wilson & Glenn Loovens are just not good enough and never will be. £2.5m and he is worse than what was already there. What does Dareen O'Dea need to do to get a chance??
This defence is a complete shambles and without Artur performing miracles i fear the worst in the coming months.
That said great resolve from the team to give it their all right to the end.JVOH & Samaras is worth perservering with.

got to disagree with the comments on Scott Brown. For me he was the guy who kept us in the game. All over the pitch harrying and trying to get attacks started.

Celt for life
I think you make some points there regarding O'Dea in particular but didn't WGS say Loovens wasn't the finished article? Although why we bought him remains a mystery. However, JVOH and Sammi could make an excellent partnership. I am glad we have competition upfront and midfield but why is the defence as bad now as I can recall in recent memory?

celt for life

methinks thats a tad harsh on Loovens and Wilson. Granted they didnt perform very well today though but regards loovens its only his 3rd appearance and the first two were encouraging. Also he is beside Captain Chaos whose blunder (when he ended up in the main stand) was very fortunate not to come to anything as he was last man. I for one will wait until its a loovens / caldwell combo although I would also like to see a loovens / o dea double act as I too am a fan of DOD.

Regards Wilson - he seems better on the left rather than right back and I certainly prefer him to Hinkel although I would also like to see caddis get a run at RB

one of the things that pleased me the most was the fact we had the quality to bring on and change the game. I Genuinely cant remember a period in my lifetime when we could do this.

To Tell you the Truth this Team Can Score against anyone

Except Aalborg obviously

sorry celt for life I omitted valid (points)from my post.

Caddis still not getting a look in - has his form fallen in training cos I can't think why else he doesn't get the nod ahead of Wilson.

Defence still looks vulnerable and we can't consistently boss midfield when harried (despite the 'wealth' of choice). Up front is a different matter - Sami is a star and JVOH looks like he has far more energy.

Can't believe we shipped 2 goals to an ex player who's a left back - ironic explained?

Paul 67

I sent you a message earlier this morning from the 'about' link. Did you happen to get it?

Hail Hail

Jinkysboy
I know that Loovens is new and hasnt played many games but being new doesnt stop you from heading and tackling, and so far he has not demonstrated an ability to do these better than others already there.
On Mark Wilson, if Naylor was defending as poorly as this lad is then CQN would be in meltdown.
Well done Aiden for pulling out the rabbits again, his cross for Mcdonald goal and the tackle on the half way line in lead up to winning goal shows he is showing no signs of putting on the petted lip.

Can't believe how many "supporters" left the ground before the end. I reckoned at least one third of seats were empty when the winner went in. Have they never been to a Celtic game before? 2-1 down, big deal I thought, we'll still win!

Defence was poor today (we missed Caldwell) but I'd take a game and result like that every week! Great entertainment.

And well done Aiden, you won the match for us today!

Agree with the comments on Wilson, I don't think his form of late warrants a place ahead of Caddis.

As much as I dislike the early leavers, those reports are rubbish as they were actually fewer in numbers than normal!!

West Wales Celt

After the debate friday re our lack of a left back for 30 years Alanis morrisette couldnt have put it any better.

When he came on for Severin after 25 mins I said to my neighbour at the game - wanna bet he scores from a FK? Should have nipped down to ladbrokes then.

Beeb gave him MOM but other than score 2 goals, drive down the left all day giving Wilson a tough time, and the fact that Aidino couldnt get by him one on one, he did heehaw.......

I would like to know what happened between him and WGS as I heard that there was a pre season confrontation last year and we all know if the wee fella takes a dislike personally to you then its taxi time

Tallbhoy

From my seat (upper rankers) I honestly cant see how you could say 15k seats were empty at 90 mins. I did notice leavers but nothing like that scale and London Road was pretty empty as were the boozers when I bolted right on the whistle. Would have thought if a third of punters left early then that would not have been the case.

Jinkysboy,

Obviously I don't have a clue where you sit my friend, but from where i was it looked to me like a few thousand rather than a few hundred who left before we scored the winner.

Great entertainment today. Not sure how Mackie was allowed to race through to our penalty box on his own in the last minute mind you - will need to watch the highlights to get to the bottom of that one.

Did anyone in the south stand have the joy of the captain falling on top of them. How funny was that

Don't think this is the right occasion to criticise individual players.
What I saw today was a poor TEAM performance :-
- Poor, if any, movement
- Poor passing
- Lack of confidence, both in themselves and teammates, because of above.

Thought Samaras did well (ambience is the key which gives him confidence), but he is only part of a team which did not function.

Thought Aiden made a big difference when he came on by doing what many accuse him of not doing i.e. early release of ball, thoughtfull passes into box plus the best tackle of the game when winning the ball before setting up the winner.

On reflection, I could imagine that the current rotation policy, with which I completely agree, backfired a wee bit. Everybody wants to play on Tuesday, so nobody dared to make a mistake (which means that they invariably make a lot of them).
What they do on the training field may get them into the first team, but what they do in the team should decide if they get to play in the big matches.

Probably wrong, wouldn't be the first time, but would like to hear how others think.

Cheers

Alex

Mulgrew also gave the ball away several times in a way that would have had the mob bawling for his head if he was still in the hoops.

Haven't even seen any of the goals, so I can't really comment on the game. Have to say though that I'm surprised at the negativity on here. My mate said if I had seen it, I would be raving about it. It was, according to him, a great game of football, and, while he was delighted we got the 3 points, Aberdeen probably deserved to take something from it. As he said, on such games, Championships are won.

Jinkysboy
15,000 empty seats still leaves 45,000 so perhaps we are observing the same thing! :-)
I'm in North Stand upper, different views but I have honestly never seen so many empty seats in a similar situation. You might be correct and I might be wrong. Perhaps TV highlights will give a better indication.

andycol

How many Aberdeen players did he dispose? How many times did he loose the ball or give a hospital pass? How often did he mark an aberdeen player closely enough, which seems a basic rule? How often did he pass to the side or mis control the ball. I'm sorry I just think he is never, ever a central midfielder. Right midfield yes certainly but never centre mid. I loved Allan Thompson as a left midfielder but when he played central midfield he was a disaster. Central mid is such a specialised position for exremely talented and inteligent players.

Not one of our best games but you have to admire Gordons courage switching 4-3-3 when we went behind.
Taking Mollie and Crossas off replacing them with Skippy and Aiden was a master stroke. I expected a like for like change with Shaun and Aiden being swapped but putting Aiden on working the right channel changed the game and the result. Naka moving inside caused their fairly solid defence a nightmare.
Sammi again was amazing. That lads energy is unbelievable, he was popping up everywhere on the pitch.
Skippy broke his duck, hopefully he can get back to his lightening form of last season. Likewise JVoH. He took both his goals very very well.
With regards to Loovens, he has shown great promise but at this moment he is not the answer. Caldwells position is no great danger. Talking about the defence, I think Lee Naylor is getting forward a lot more and is being pretty effective. Good on him though defensively he still looks a bit shaky.

Hail Hail

Got to agree with dannybhoy67, we do have better quality on the bench than in previous years and it is good to see that changes can be made to win the game.

There has been some very good football this season and some not so good.
Consistency is what we need now.

I'll take that kind of luck every week. Well done to Aiden - winning that ball in midfield was the pivotal point in the game, as rightly pointed out by our manager.

In the meantime, I've been giving some thought to the personnel for Tuesday night's mission. I suspect that Hinkel might be back in the side instead of Wilson, Crosas will be dropped (no chance of Scott Brown being dropped), Robson to come in and McGeady to stay on the bench. Likelihood of Samaras playing a left-sided, deeper role, with JVoH more or less on his own. Perhaps McGeady might come in but I think Maloney will stay and Gordon is likely to opt for Nakamura because of his ability to hold up the ball and pick a pass. McGeady might get a little frustrated up against a better quality of right/left back.

Boruc - Hinkel, Naylor, McManus, Caldwell - Robson, Brown, Nakamura, Maloney, Samaras - Vennegoor of Hesselink

I'd bite (nay, demolish) your hand off for a point at El Madrigal.

Let's be honest. That was a lot more enjoyable than going 3-0 up before being pegged back to 3-2.

I have to say that I thought McGeady was a little inneffectual when he came on, other than that killer pass (and frankly that's enough), but I'm not sure he made a strong case for being picked ahead of Maloney (if that is the choice), perhaps it's time for Nakamura to get a wee rest. Of the substitutes I thought McDonald exerted a greater influence on the outcome of the game.

Dublinbhoy
Just for the record Skippy broke his duck against Motherwell a couple of weeks ago.
Loovens, showing promise? Where & when? O'Dea a far better player and more importantly, defender

Paul

Another excellent article on our performance today
First half we really needed to score the second when we were on top.At times we over-elaborated and seemed intent on walking the ball in to the net
Second half as you point out our lack a truly defensive minded midfield player almost cost us

Crosas is a real prospect- neat and tidy on the ball and always looking to find space.
However he as yet does not have the technique nor physical presense to dominate the midfield
Have you heard anything about the bhoy from Switzerland Burki ?
I see that he is supposed to be a defensive midfielder
I think it was Naka who was quoted as saying words to the effect that we were better when Lenny was in his prime

Over all I really enjoyed today but a lot of that was done to the result going our way no doubt

Looks like it will be a roller coaster of a season unless the huns implode
Here's hoping

Does anyone think Sammi will play the lone striker role on Tuesday?

bsm71. Not long back from the game and what I had to say reflected my impression of what was going on. Brown was the main guy pressing the ball and lookng for the pass to take the play forward. I was glad he was there for too many of our players were missing today. I dont doubt he did give the ball away at times and make mistakes but he had the appetite and the drive which kept us in the game. I thought Crosas was a huge disapointment and worryingly showed allowed himself to drift out of the game. With Naka and Shaun ineffective SB had a huge burden in the middle.

Based on the manager's comments and our away pre-season friendlies, no. I reckon Big Jan will be up front with Samaras playing a different supporting role (he was on the left in these pre-season games)

Need to pay tribute to our match winner.

Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.

celt for life:

D'oh! Course he did.

weeminger:

Thats what McGeady is supposed to do and from where I was watching I think he put the cross in for the winner too. From what I saw (and I missed the first half hour) Maloney just wasn't doing it. Shaun does get goals but his primary job is to feed the forwards. Aidens problem is the exact opposite, he just does not score enough goals but his assists are very very important to Celtic.

The lineup on Tuesday will be interesting. I'm just glad I don't have to make the choices.

Hail Hail

panenka's chip
Ahh...right. I see what you mean.

Sir Paul

Here is an example of Uncommon Common Sense..it is an oldie, but a goodie.

"Doctor,Doctor, everytime I raise my arn higher than my head... I get the most terrible shooting pains... in my Back...tell me... what should I do about it?"

"Don't raise your arm.. Higher than your Head"

Now that I have your attention...

Doctor, Doctor...

Every time, I have seen Paul Caddis play for Celtic, this season.. He has Been a Star... he has added, accurate distribution.. close and closer, marking of his man... has simply refused to gie the Ba' away too Cheaply... is always, ready willing and able to Overlap.. his Crossing ability is probably the second best, in the Team..mebbe not quite as good as Aiden's..

That being said..

On the Other Hand.. Dear, Doctor...

Every Game that I have seen Wilson play ,whether at Right or Left Back... he has added nothing to the team..his distribution is spotty...at best..his crossing ability is in the feeble constituency..his man marking is suspect.

Every Game that I have seen Hinkel play this season.. he is far too slow... he reactions are way out of synch ... his overlapping ability, is almost non existent... his Man Marking Ability.. is DEPLORABLE...he loses the ball to opponents, far too many times..

So, Doc.. tell me..

Who should we play ...

Wilson, Hinkel or Caddis?

Kojo.

Betis make it 1-1. Casillas saved but Sergio netted the rebound.

Platini Launches Attack On Premier League...Again

Uefa President Michel Platini has once again launched a scathing attack on the Premier League for its continued willingness to allow foreign investors to takeover English clubs.
In a long line of attacks, the Frenchman has criticised various elements of the English game as he looks to stamp his authority in the European game.

With Manchester City joining the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa in being bought out, Platini has launched another broadside on the world's most lucrative league for its 'liberalism' when it comes to ownership.

"I am worried by this, of course," Platini told French newspaper Sud Ouest. "I am trying to alert the authorities but this is the liberalism of the English - what can we do?"

Platini went on to outline his plan to establish a European Board of Control and Management to mirrow France's DNCG, a body which regulates the financial side of professional football within the game.

"I am in the process of working to put in place a European DNCG. I have meetings lined up with experts to find out what paths we can take."

When asked whether the move is an attempt to introduce greater financial equality within the game, Platini said: "We would like that, but there will always be clubs a lot richer than others.

"And we can't fix the same rules for everyone simply because the tax system, or the centralisation of TV rights for example, aren't the same in France and in Spain. "These are national problems which I can't fight against."

o1bhoy

It was a penalty for Betis, resulting in a red card for Marcelo.

About an hour gone. Betis are putting Real Madrid under severe pressure.

An hour gone in the game between Sporting and Villarreal in Gijón. 0-0.

Dublinbhoy - true and I guess setting up one taken chance in 20 minutes is better than seting up 20 untaken chances in 70 (not that Maloney did that, but you get my drift).

I remember thinking at one point, when he didn't seem to want to track back, that he was behaving like a spoilt child.

For the record (this is a general comment not aimed directly at you DB) I thought Brown was mostly ok today. I think there's a large group of people expecting him to play the same game he did at Hibs but I think he's been asked to fulfil a different role. There are so many occasions when an opposition missplaced pass is the direct result of Brown's harrying. And as I see it his 'headless chicken' act is jsut him getting in the way of as many passes as possible

Well, that was a nice easy home win, wasn't it?? The late show is back!

We played some good football at times yet gave the ball away too easily and made some very basic mistakes. How many times did two of our players collide both going for the same ball??

Pluses: Samaras again, Crossas looked good, quick tactical change from the manager when we needed it, Aiden crossing from the right.

Negatives: don't want to go there, we won!

Be very interesting to see what the team line up is on Tuesday.

Villarreal score. 0-1. Rossi.

Ref consults linesman over possible offside. A flag went up. The claim is handball.

The goal stands.

As things stand, Villarreal are top of the league.

Paul67:

Kojo makes an excellent point re Wilson, Hinkel and Caddis.

Competition is now a major but healthy problem for WGS.

Don't you think it is only a matter of time before Caddis holds down a regular spot in the team?

West Wales Celt,

I have no idea what your fascination is with the young lad Caddis although I suspect it has something to do with how you pass your time in the wilds of West Wales. All those sheep and very few women will do it eventually I suppose. I bet you are the kind of guy who drives a Renault Kangoo just so you can legally carry the girlfriend in the boot.

Excellent result today, 3 points hard fought for and well deserved in my opinion. Here is hoping we can 1- 0 on Tuesday.

I enjoyed the drama of the game today and felt Celtic were a notch down on their recent form but not as bad, going forward, as has been asserted in earlier posts.

Credit to Aberdeen for making our crowd panic today and credit to the players that they did not respond by hoofing up the park at all times when we went behind. Credit, above all, to Aiden who played with intelligence and desire, to make this game a win.

Caldwell will walk back into his Right Centre Back slot. We may need to look at O'Dea or Loovens ( he WAS awful today but he needs a trial in the Left Centre Back slot before he is written off) beside him next weekend. I would not want to see a change in the Caldwell/ McManus pairing for CL until a new pairing has gained experience and bedded in.

As for Kojo's point. Caddis has not played at right back in competitive games so I suspect it will be Hinkel or Wilson again.

Parkhead - perhaps it's because the lad has pace, determination, a good tackle, great crossing ability and is comfortable on the ball... can the same be said for Wilson & Hinkel on current form?

Can see where bsm71 was coming from, S.Brown is not yet a central mid player, every pass was either under or over hit. Has he got a twin brother that used to play for Hibs? I could run about daft for an hour closing down the opposition. Don't get me started on the full backs, McManus was the best of the back four! However thought the forwards were good today, although Maloney was a bit quiet. Weird, Celtic struggle at home these days and look better away, hope it continues during the week.

On the subject of Scott Brown...

I happen to agree with your wise assessment of his woith to Celtic..which. I am afraid is going unnoticed by others.

I have been a harsh critic of this boy... in the recent Past.

However, I am no longer inclined to feel that way.

He is Improving, with each successive outing..
His Unnecessary Foul Count, committed on his opponents..is way, way, down.

He does a fine job, as you say of ... HARROWING... which is an UNSUNG ART.

In long or in short...

I like Scott... and I am more that willing to line him up for the next candidate for invite.. to My Fair Hair Bhoys Club..

At the Moment this Club only has Two Members... Namely .. Caldwell and Jvoh

This club is reserved strictly for Players who in the Past had caused increasing disappointment, by their Lacklustre Performances...

Howevahhhhhhh.

By dint of hard work, perseverence and determination.. have turned their former disappointing outings into .. veritable Star Turns and Game saving acts...

I am very proud of Gary and Jvoh..

As I have mentioned... If Master Brown Continues to Improve, which I believe he is doing... He shall soon come under my Scrutiny for entrance, to becoming an Exalted Thoid Member, of My Fair Haired Bhoys Club.

Good fur ye, Scott..

Antrim_Bhoy - I would concur with your assessment of the young lad Caddis, although I must confess to having not seen a great deal of him. I think he will definitely break through eventually. I just wonder if it is not a little bit early for him with so much at stake at the start of the season. He is after all still relatively young and inexperienced which is something we do not need in the defence at the moment, surely.

I also meant to say that Charlie Mulgrew is no left back and his career stalled for football reasons not because of WGS. He went to Wolves where he played 6 times before being loaned to Southend and transferred back to Aberdeen for free or a low fee. He was on the bench today because of his Aberdeen form also.

He is a tall left sided player who takes very good free kicks. He does not jump as well as his height would suggest and his defensive positioning and tackling are not good enough either.

We cannot use Mulgrew as another stick with which to beat WGS.

Catch you all later.

Have often criticised Gordon for baffling substitutions and tactics.
But his substitution of Aiden for the very ineffective Shaun and moving Naka more centre was a masterstroke.
Naka,s man followed him inside allowing Aiden to have time and space to deliver crosses effectively. His setting up of both goals is all the evidence needed.
Thought our 1st performance was slow +wasteful interspersed with some brilliant but a tad fancy play.In 2nd we started deep and showed no forward momentum and paid the price.
Really enjoyed last 20mins of wave after wave of attacks, this to me is playing the Glasgow Celtic way.
Brilliant goal +skill from big Jan for winner.

To the guys who are saying it was only a few hundred who left early today, I have to say you're kidding. It was hundreds just from our corner in the North West Stand. My 9 year old daughter was disgusted with them. She said to me what kind of support is that? She has only just started going to games and is still quite nervous about chanting and singing but she was desperate for us to chant and sing in the last 15 minutes as she knew, by instinct, that the team needed us to do that. I was a proud Dad today. My kids had never witnessed a Celtic fightback before today, they know what one is like now.

Exciting stuff today!!

One point about the referee Eddie Smith.
I though he had a good game overall but the free kick for Aberdeen's second was debatable. The resultant strike from Mulgrew was superb.

Sound familiar?...think last season, Nakamura, St Mirren, a debatable decision given by the same referee.
Before we knew it his background, family connections were being dragged out and debated in public by our lovable media and the phone-in buffoons.

Can we expect a similar hatchet job after this decision? Mmmm, doubt it.

Ruud Van N steals it for Readl Madrid in stoppage time.

Not bad with only ten men for most of the second half in a difficult away fixture,

There must be a lot of people in Madrid saying Memorares.

goldstar
100% correct. Loovens held his ground and Aberdeen player backed into him.
E Smiths critics will be conspicuous by their absence tomorrow.

Full time in Gijón: Sporting 0-1 Villarreal (league toppers).

Full time Betis 1-2 Real Madrid.

That's Half the Battle....

o1bhoy

Jim the Tim, I like the way the managers restricting Caddis in this way, I think he’s going to be a very good player soon enough. A few weeks ago after the Falkirk game I thought the manager should wrap Crosas in cotton wool for a while but he’s had a decent run out since and preformed well. I’d definitely play him midweek. It’s a balancing act due to the age of Caddis but from what I’ve seen he must be regarded as our best fullback

The old heart attacks were back. what a volcano when that ball rippled the side netting.
And what about those who left when Mulgrew's free kick went in? And those who left when our equaliser hit the net?
I will say this, though. The fans who were left really roared on the team and played a significant part in our victory.
Hail hail !

Celtic-First -the Hibees do us a turn tomorrow -it'll be Scotland's and Spain's "league toppers" doing battle next Tuesday in the CHAMPIONS league!

Know you are something of a Spanish football afficionado -surely we can get a point out there- at least?

oops, meant tim in the chamber last post. Thats only my second bushmill as well, tut tut

Celtic_First

I suspect we will be in for a torrid time on Tuesday. I'm not writing off Celtic though, not after last season. This team has heart.
From what people are saying about the many customers that left CP early today, its a pity that they can not show the same resilience and never-say-die attitude as we expect from our team.

Hail Hail

looking over the posts, all things seem to be pointed out well.
It took us to be facing defeat before we raised the atmosphere, think our bhoys would maybe keep up the tempo if we cheered them on from the off & pushed them to go for the 2nd. As for the deserters, well the missed the come back, let that be their lesson,.. Can't think of anything worse than being outside the ground & hearing two amazing roars!!

The ball was moved well at times & I enjoyed what I was seeing, but all of a sudden the movement stopped & the ball was getting stuck. The team could learn al lot from the way Crosas passes and moves. When we made runs into space & gave options it came off well at times.

Anyone get a good view of Sammy going down in the box?
From where I was it looked like he was caught.

What was with Boruc??
He was looking to get a yellow card,.. Needs to calm down or he'll get targeted by refs.
Maybe loves his song too much, "he's aff his f**ing rocker, and be says..."
And is acting it out.
There you go, singing does affect the players,
So,.. Cheer on the Bhoys! C'mon the Hoops!!

A very exciting game and the last 20mins were pulsating .

Nice to see the strikers on the score sheet and it was especially pleasing to see WGS make a positive substitution with sufficient amount of time for it to have an impact .
The defence was poor all day

Mick..same old same old

Loovens ..very disappointing thought he was very average

Naylor ..same old same old

Wilson..imo he was dreadful today ..plenty of effort but no football

Midfield were passable

however i remain concerned by Brown ..when we struggle for any period in a game he is the first to disappear

Forwards ..all 3 were excellent

Lastly..that is the type of ball we get from Aiden when he plays on the right ...more please

2 positive substitutions win the game ...good management

however ...the undroppable duo are going to cost us ...and soon

DublinBhoy

correct

how can we demand application from our players when some of our number don`t even stay until the final 10 mins

i sit beside an old fella who always leaves at 85 mins ..he wants to miss the rush..he leaves at the same time every game and has missed some cracking goals both in the CL and the SPL ...i guess some folk have their reasons

as he was leaving today i told him to hurry up and get out as we needed a goal

i`m sure he was as delighted as every other supporter to realise he had missed another matchwinner

goldstar

it wasn`t a foul

your right if that had resulted in a winner for us there would have been no end of fuss

however if the sheep had held onto the 2-1 lead

then ....these things even themselves don`t they ????

wasn't it great being there at the end and seeing the winner :)

in saying that i was that late getting there i missed the 1st goal

PF ayr

There's a guy beside me like that. He moans from first whistle to around 85mins when he leaves. In the past year he has missed 2 Champions League game winning goals, a Glasgow Derby winning goal and todays (that I can think off the top of my head). I actually asked him if he fancied leaving last week against Aalborg, I must have peeved him of cos he stayed to the end, probably out of spite! Should have kept my mouth shut and we'd be top of the Group! I was sitting in my wee bhoys seat in 115 today and the wife txt me to say that was him gone at 84mins, from then on was the most relaxed I had been all day!

I leave early on occasion, but my rule is only if we're 2 goals up and never before 87 mins. I know it's not much but if you can be out of the ground before the whistle goes then it's so much easier when having 2 kids in tow. I could NEVER leave with a game on a knife edge, I don't know how anyone can.

.

What Does anyone think of Boruc's Form....

l am surprised no one is Mentioning Him.... the 1st went through His Legs....No Chance with the 2nd....10 Goals this season Half of Which well i'll let you Guess....

His Time wasting got him a Yellow and Aberdeen a Extra 3 Min's on Top of the 3 Min's injury time....It Nearly cost us....

Be Good to Know others thoughts....I Do believe we have got the Yank in at the Perfect time as Brown is no Deputy....

o1bhoy

The fu99ie dew,
I saw the Samaras incident on the H/T highlights. It was a penalty!
Some left early but the support was good today. The late chance was a poor finish to the game but the result stands! :-)

PF ayr
Because the players are rewarded financially so 100% application should be the norm.
People have left early as far back as i can remember. That is their right as customers.
I have never left any sporting event early but again thats my personal choice.
Remember in 60s my younger sister needing to pee.Nearest girls toilet was at train station in Bridgeton cross.Celtic losing to Hearts 2-1 with 10 to go as we headed out to station.
Got home to discover we won 5-2 and was furious.Took me a long time to go to a game with her again.

I meant to ask, why exactly was there 5 minutes injury/stoppage time added? There were no nasty tackles or major stoppages during the second half that I saw. It was if the ref, who did have an ok game, was giving the Dons as much as time as needed to get the equaliser. It very nearly paid off for Aberdeen too.

Hail Hail

"He won the LEAGUE FUR US...Last year..."

is in reference to JVOH...

Sorry for the confusion..

Kojo.

We were playing training-ground football in the 1st half today - 15+ passes without an Aberdeen player getting a touch, which is great to watch, but there wasn't really a cutting edge. And it nearly cost us...

Does any other team get punished so frequently by ex-players as we do? I wouldn't have been surprised if Mulgrew had scored with his first touch today when he came on and immediately took the free kick.

You've got to love a heroic last minute goal - cannae beat it! I couldn't really believe it the other week when we left the stadium against Aalborg and it had finished 0-0. That's just not right! The script is that we pull it out the fire at the end!

We've got a tough task ahead of us on Tuesday evening. A point would be fantastic, I'd take another 0-0 right now.

dannybhoy67, 7:17, an excellent point.

jbj713, thank you.

Kojo, tim in the chamber, aye, I know what you mean, but let me add this:

There are times for radical change; after a recent home defeat was one of them, and there are times when you should only change one area of the team at a time.

Paul Caddis’ time will come, but he is a young lad, take a read at some of the reactions to a poor performance by others.....

Kojo, Jan is indeed a big game player; but I think we will get much more out of him with Samaras in attendance.

Forget about Massimo for Tuesday, I shudder to think.

DublinBhoy

I think Artur took up a good minute with his antics and there were 2 subs made right after the goal but in injury time which could explain the extra 2 minutes on top of the allotted 3. There was no need for Artur to take it to the extremes he did, he should have been booked the first time he done it. What's the odds he msises an important match later after picking up that stupid booking today?

What I can't explain is why Skippy didn't take that ball for a walk to the corner. From us losing the ball after trying to attack from this situation we almost gifted them a third goal!

Result was one of a very few positives.

The venerated goalie hopeless, although undefended at first goal.

Lovvens, a real worry. Naylor was Naylor. Wilson was Wilson.

The managers fixation with Broon will cost us dear.

MiB outrageous, booking the crowd-milker while the sheep goalie was encouraged in delaying tactics. Mick put into the stand, no foul then the softest free kick before the shepp goal . No Love Street debate likely.

Positives

Crosas, a diamond which should be cherished.

McGeady, on the right saving the day, despite the manager's stubborness.

JVOH , Yes... a great shift
Samaras, overdid a bit but growing every week
Skippy, hungry and a team-member finally

Gordon , play McGeady on the right , Crosas in the middle, with Robson.

Sell Brooon

01bhhoy-didn't realise until you posted that Boruc had actually got a yellow card for that- although at the time I remember the radio commentators were busting a gut that he should get a yellow!

I think ,for whatever reasons, the big man has gone off the boil at the minute.Am sure he will bounce back -maybe the signing of the American guy will perk him up - I don't think he has ever had much fear of Mark Brown stepping into his shoes.

The right-back options for Tuesday are limited, as Hinkel is out with a thigh strain. How fit is McGrain?

Looking back at today I thought what turned the game Aberdeens way in the 2nd half was Calderwoods decision to man-mark Crosas with Stuart Duff (I think). It was only when Marc came off did we start to get some joy again as Calderwood never reacted to our change in formation. That's not an indictment on Crosas, I thought he was having another great game today.

It's not often you see a holding midfielder being man-marked, I struggle to think of many more than when Martin O'Neill deployed Chris Sutton to man-mark Tugay in the game at Ewood Park after he pulled the strings in the first leg. It was a decision that helped enormously in winning the game as big Sutton absolutely dominated Tugay that night and Blackburn couldn't build in their usual way. We might see a lot more of this tactic on Marc Crosas I think.

Kojo

"He won the LEAGUE FUR US...Last year..."

Thanks for the clarification, I was worried you had lost the plot completely and were suggesting Massimo had won the league for us!

If I can be so bold as to make a prediction for the next 10 years -

Massimo Donati will never be a Celtic player

Loan him, swap him , free him whatever it takes but lets accept the bleeding obvious

See some of the Norwich fans are wondering how long they can hold on to David Marshall - seems to be keeping a poor team afloat single-handed. Caught glimpses of him - he seems to have filled out slightly as he's matured but that's no bad thing for a keeper. Remember he's only 23/24. Don't think he'll go back to Celtic but I'm sure we all wish him well.
BTW - the reserves round about 2002/03 can't have been bad - Marshall, Kennedy, McManus, Maloney, McGeady plus Beattie, Miller and Wallace who have all played Premiership/Championship level.

sixoclock
did you leave early for fiveoclockatthechapel;)

Ban TGITW,

Is Broon Boynita ?

Bloke_109

If the options are limited then play Caddis.
The argument often used against him is that he is too small - I don't think that this has much relevance against Spanish teams who tend to keep the ball on the deck.

Pace and awareness is everything against Villareal - height and physique will count for less.

PetetheBeat

Watched Norwich a couple of times this season, Marsh has been a stand out in each game.
I would have him back in an instant, he was judged too early in a Celtic jersey in front of a defence that gave no protection. If we don't take him back, he will be a Premiership keeper by the age of 25.

porridgeandbananas

I saw Boruc getting the yellow but did not think he was any worse than Aberdeens goalie. I agree though a goalie holding up a game is unsporting particularly when he can pass it out to his full backs to run with and up to the opposition corner flag to kill time and frustrate the other team. I would, though, dispute the extra 3 minutes in the first place.

Hail Hail

Sixoclockatthechapel and Dublinbhoy

Villarreal are there on merit, but it could be short-lived if Valencia win tomorrow.

They have 13 points out of 15, which is great going. They have beaten Deportivo La Coruña and Racing at home, and now Sporting and Numancia away, drawing away to Osasuna too.

You could argue that they’s “played naebdy”, but if there are no easy away games in the SPL, imagine what it's like in Spain.

TimMalone

Agreed.

Boruc was rightly booked for timewasting. There was 3 minutes to be added before we scored, so 4 or 5 was probably about right.

But Aberdeen should never have had their chance near the end. It came from our possession where Skippy and Naka between them contrived to lose the ball when we didn't need to do anything more than keep it in the corner.

We need to be a little more professional in killing a game off when we are one up.

blantyretim-:) -no mate - the sixclock in my moniker is 6-AM! -our pick-up time and point.

Didn't manage the game today -but know for a fact any of our club leaving early would do well to get on the bus for another game the rest of the season!!

Like many I would love to see Caddis getting a chance at right back.

However it appears to me that WGS sees him more as a right sided midfielder so he is effectively competing for a starting place with Aiden,Naka and Shaun not to mention Mizuno and McCourt.

Perhaps there are doubts among the coaching team about his defensive abilities bit I still reckon he's a better bet than Wilson.

DublinBhoy

I agree, I couldn't see where the 3 minutes came from, from memory I only remember Loovens being down and it certainly wasn't for anything 3 minutes. I know they can justify it as being 30 secs for goals and subs but that law is never enforced.

Saying that on 89mins I was looking for at least 15mins injury time, on 90mins I was looking for none!

I've got to disagree though on Boruc, the most blatant act of 'book me please' that I've seen in a while!

hail hail to 3 points and top of the League!

hi ghuys

anybody got a link to todays goals?

hail hail

Very relieved after a mixed performance today. We need a defensive coach now, not next season if the rumour mill is correct.

I missed the last goal as my 6 year old son was bursting for the toilet.

Am I an early leaver according to Shuggie Keevins?

McGraininspain thanks for all the cracking dexy's, specials & redskins footage last night. A lot of good memories musically & football wise 1979 - 1984. Loads of other great songs were available attached to those you did the links for.

Searching for the young soul rebels still one of my favourite LP'S. I have been told the front cover was a picture taken in the late 60's of non-loyalist families being evicted from their homes by loyalists, but I'm not sure how accurate this is.

Chris Dean (or x-moore, his NME psuedonym) looks very much like Mr Riordan formerly of this parish, but he had a better haircut than Deek.

Half time in the Catalán derby:

Espanyol 1-0 Barcelona.

Espanyol are down to ten men because Nené got sent off on the stroke of half time.

porridgeandbananas

Ha, yep I was thinking the same thing before Jan got the winner.

Hail Hail

McGrain in spain, I meant to say Chris dean, the Redskins lead singer looks like Deek.

Celtic_First :cheers for the come-back mate.

I'm sure any team in la Liga 1 could/would give us a sore time, much less the League Leaders, but, with the'TIC,I always go into every game thinking we can win it -and that's the way I'll be approaching next Tue's game -here's hoping anyway!!

Dublinbhoy,

3 mins at least were justified and I agree the sheep keeper was bad, but we cannot condemn the Victor Baias of the world and condone Boruc.

He is working his ticket big-time and playing to the flock.

He has been a great keeper but not a particularly likeable individual, I have tried.

Get the money and get him out.

Any more comedy shows and his value will drop like a stone

notafanofstan

I got to say I love the big man. Arturs form has dropped a bit this season, so until he has gets himself back to his best he really should give up on the theatrics.

notafan

DublinBhoy,

Agreed :)

No man is bigger than the Club and this circus must come to an end

Heart attack stuff from the hoops. But what an enthralling finish.

Although I must admit to being a tad confused. Before a match I wish for a good comfortable victory with a performance to match and yet, I seem to enjoy these sort of wins so much more than I would say a 3-0 scoreline.

Damn workload has me posting far more infrequently than I would have hoped. GS substitutions did the trick today. The defense had a difficult second half and from my vantage point I felt that Naylor was the best of our back four.

Samaras was terrific in spells today.

I got the feeling that after scoring an early goal the team got more and more complacent as the game went on, expecting more goals to materialise without putting in the ground work for that to be achieved.

Still, the comeback was thrilling and I left the ground grinning from ear to ear.

Sixoclockatthechapel (keep on putting spaces in your name)

Bobby Lennox said once: “Every time a Celtic team goes onto the par, at any level, I expect it to win.”

my dear,dear,dear,dear,friend..SlolelyBhoy

Do you really, really, think so?...strange.. I am of an entirely different opinion of this young Man.

When I see him play, I see a very intelligent and thoughtful performer.

Truth to tell,Formerly, I also, did believe that he was far too fragile and introverted for our Scottish Style of Soccer, as she is played.

Howevvahhhh...I now am of the opinion, that he has finally settled in.

In his last few appearances I have done a 180, concerning that opinion..

Howevvvvvvvvvvvah..

He is not getting a chance to prove that he has finally adjusted to our type of Soccer.

And I do believe that he has.

In his last outing against Livingstone, I believe that he comported himself, rather well..

Although, many others who also saw that game... believed the exact opposite'

Hmmmmmmmmmm!

Obviously,you are in that camp.

And you have excellent company...as Sir Paul is also of like mind, as your good self, regarding what Massimo has to offer.

Kojo.
yer pal... who likes ye.

Getting concerned about the different options Gordon has for Tuesday.
Whilst I have 100% faith in the manager i can't help feeling that unless we get a draw or win, then all the hindsight lurkers will give him pelters for "picking" the wrong team.
What the last few weeks has shown me is that the squad is competent no matter who the 11 are that take the field and that if the result is negative it is invariably because the players didnt perform, and not cause Gordon picked the wrong team.
Up to the ones that take the field to deliver to their potential.

Kojo,

footballers every time, I concur.

Kojo

I agree, I also feel that Massimo shouldn't be looked upon as a lost cause in the Hoops, he may surprise a few people yet before long. Don't ask me why, especially after his performance the last time we travelled to Spain, but I have a feeling we may have a surprise inclusion on Tuesday of Massimo, much in the same way we were all amazed to see Jiri Jarosik start against Milan last year.

I'm putting my tin hat on as I type, but I don't see him as any worse a Celtic player than Scott Brown, whom we all assume will start on Tuesday.

Have to say, I don't understand a lot of the comments tonight. I though in the first half we played some nice stuff, though the calamity of some of our defending was already seeding some fear in my mind. In 45 minutes, we had a player hurt 4 times, each time by a team mate!

I thought Boruc was very suspect at their second, leaving a huge target for Mulgrew to aim at, though otherwise played pretty okay, bar slowing down play a bit too much at times. I thought the two full backs were okay, with the defensive problems stemming from Loovens and Mick. My God we miss Caldwell! I had major fears after my first viewing of Loovens and today did nothing to remove these. He looks very uncomfortable on the ball and very shaky once something goes wrong. I felt Wilson had a decent game considering what he was playing beside. Both Mick and Loovens could be dropped on that showing.

Yet again, the midfield let us down. I know Brown is getting some stick and he certainly did lose a lot of ball with slack passing, however, without Brown in the last half hour, we would never have won the game. Despite his issues with distribution, he still worked harder than anyone else and it really helped when we needed it. In fact, I thought he took on the Caldwell role and drove us on.

McGeady needs to be reinstated in the team, he didn't win player of the year for nothing. Great tackle and two great assists today.

Despite the obvious flaws, it made for one exciting game! My throat hasn't been so sore for a while! Really enjoyed yelling them on for the comeback! Great 3 points (after it looked like it more dropped points at home), but we need to have a right good look at oursleves before Tuesday.

Finally, last year I posted that although we were playing some nice football, every time we moved about a bit, we fell apart defensively. Cue 6 months of static boring football. Again, we're playing some more entertaining football, but as soon as the midfield move about a bit and rotate, we lose all shape and all ability to defend. Until we sort this, we'll be very prone to losing games, or end up switching back to the static awful football we endured for a long part of last season...

Celtic_First - I'm in good company then!!

blanttyretim - wish I lived 10 minutes from CP mate - you are 1 lucky man - though not for 1 minute would I dare suggest you are in any measure the lesser supporter for that!

Game suspended in Barcelona because of crowd trouble.

Radio Nacional said the Boixos Nois (Crazy Boys), the most radical Barcelona fans, threw not one but around five flares into the Espanyol crowd. Panic ensued and a crash barrier came down.

Espanyol fans went towards the Boixos Nois and the police moved in. The referee indicated that the players had to leave the field of play.

Donati or Brown ?
Hartley or Brown ?
Robson or Brown ?
Jarosik or Brown ?
Gravesen or Brown ?
Crosas or Brown ?
Sno or Brown ?

Logic dictates there should be some permutations, not in clicque and clipboard world

I agree on Donati. I think he has something that could be very useful in Europe. I have not given up on him and would love to see him get more games and get the chance to change the supports opinion of him.
Also, something I always look for in new players once they've settled in a bit...he loves playing for us and it shows.

Hail Hail

I was with Sam's other brother, John, today. James will be another miffed Gooner tonight.

All -

I thought Aberdeen were the better side for large chunks of the game today. I also believe they were worth a draw.

Our defence was Keystone Cops stuff today, when team-mates start colliding with each other one knows those players are either not sure of their positioning, their direct opponents, their tactics or some or all.

Anyway I'm happy with the win but concerned in a general sense.

BIG AL.

Hi Guys
Watched the reserve match on the box. If Odea is allowed to leave our team it will be nothing short of criminal. He has all the makings of a top class CB, wish he had half a yard more pace though.
Now to today's game. We seriously need two new fullbacks. We should not be entertaining the possible signing of any new midfielders until we have emptied the comfort zone bus in this department and addressed the FB position. Wilson Heinkle and Naylor can go take Captain soundbite with them. Young Caddis will do as a temporary RB though his future is definitely right midfield. Today we went back to playing sideways and backwards sometimes, Broony was not at his best I thought he should have been subbed instead of Crossas, however we did win the game so this invalidates my assertion. We are close to being a really half decent team, the manager ( wee Gordon) is showing himself to be more pragmatic:- but he has to have the courage to go that bit further ie drop the undroppable and change to a four three three in the SPL my three three would be Caddis Crossas and Mcgeady, Sammaras JVOH and Maloney. Loovens was a disappointment to-day but Mick has played much worse and retained his position. If the wee man could just be a wee bit braver I think it could all end well for us. Big Sammi is pushing on and it was a really exciting game today. The manager’s subs proved to be both correct and timeous.

It just wasn't Arsenal's day - for 70 minutes they played as if they were the away team. Disconcerting. Celtic taught them something about endeavour today if little else.

Interesting posts on Boruc. He's not started the season well, but we should be outscoring every team in the SPL.

The penalty was the last kick of the game I think.

The game was held up for eight minutes because of the trouble.

Gerard Piqué, ex Manchester United, heavily criticised on Radio Nacional for running towards the Boixos Nois when the penalty went in and 'dedicating' the winning goal to them.

On Mister Loovens:

He did have a let off, very early on...when he was found guilty of indulging in a Mental Error.

But, nothing came of it...and he escaped the consequences.

This incident, in my opinion, affected his confidence...and from that time on...he was not the same Player that I had seen against Livingstone..in which game I thought he had made a very acceptable debut.

Confidence is a very important element that a New Member of any Team, must have...and that early shake up, seemed to disorientate, Mister Loovens.

And this damage to his confidence, coupled by the General Keystone Kops play of his defensive colleagues..sealed the Dutchman's Fate for this game.

He definitely was not a stand-out.

Therefore, in light of the above reasons, I shall reserve my judgment of this young man's worth to Celtic.

I shall give him the benefit of at least ONE SHAKY PERFORMANCE, before I seriously subject him to my criticism.

I am not impressed by the recent performances that are being turned in, by Big Mick... I am sure that these shoddy displays have not gone unnoticed by Mr. Strachan.

I fully expect that one of these fine days, we shall see the most unexpected of the unexpected .

The omission, of Big Mick from the First Team Starters.

This upcoming game against the Spaniards, may be the Turning Point, for Mr.Strachan's, hitherto, enthusiastic and unshakeable faith, in his Captain's Worth.

yeah, it was repeated about 3.00 am as was the Pink Floyd story.

Saw some of the Gilmour gig, was good stuff.

Had a few texts off punters from the bar saying 'good luck' etc

I hope all the technical problems are over and we see more of you posting.

Paulus LXVII (Neither stirred nor shaken) Been looking at JJB results, if they go to the wall does that mean that Disco Dave will be free to make another deal regarding repilica strips? and if so does that mean he has pocketed 18 Mil for hee haw? also the NTL deal when he got 30Mil up front and they went the way of the Dodo, does that mean he got 30 mil and is left with his media rights?

Kojo amigo mio can you see your way to giving me the benifit of your emmollumental savvy? Short selling? If I hold a substantial amount of stock in a compamy, how do I benifit by lending that stock to someone who although he will pay me what is effectively rent for that stock will inevitebly depress the value of my holding in that stock ?

Edward : I hope so too. However I am very much a hostage to fortune as far as computers go!

ggh

Greenwells Glory

I go on the finacial site www.iii.co.uk (Celtic even has a BB there!) and someone on the LLoyds TSB pages explained that the pension funds generally get a 5% fee for lending the stock. Their attitude used to be that that as they are holding the stock for the long term, minor fluctuations shouldn't matter.
However, some of the pension funds decied off their own bat to stop lending (not before time!)
An analogy I used was that you had a house worth £1 million. You rented it out to Led Zeppelin in their heyday for £50k for one week. You then come back to find they have done £200k's worth of damage in that week.

Apologies for the bad spelling - dodgy keyboard from overuse by sprogs.

Greenwells

I am no expert in matters financial go, I can just about manage to organise buying a round, but my understanding of these deals is that the cash is not paid up front and so SDM doesn't seem likely to get away with that sort of stunt.
I hope!

Kojo 11.08
Loovens made his debut weeks earlier against Falkirk and not in the Livingstone game. He was pants that day too. New player or not, this does not affect your ability to header a ball and tackle, unless of course you dont possess that ability in the first place, this i fear is the problem.
O'Dea has to be given a chance.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. Greenwells Glory..

I am not too sure if you are being serious or not.

Howevvvvvvvvvah..

I will accept your question as being a proper one and decant my doubts to the basement.

Normally, and by that, I mean most times...

One is completely UNAWARE, that one's Stock is being Loaned out.

This goes on all the time..

That probability, is a very good reason, why anyone who is anyone, should make sure that he is Fully in possession of the STOCK CERTIFICATES of any Stock in which he has legal Ownership.

Unfortunately, most Investors, do not bother to acquire the actual Stock CERTIFICATES of the Stock that they own.

They just leave Those Certificates, in the HANDS OF THE

BROKER ,whom they used in their initial acquirement of the Stock.

This is done, because to acquire the actual Certificates is much of a bother, plus the fact that if not properly registered and signed..the Certificates; if stolen, could have nasty and costly consequencies.

In Short...in Most cases One is unaware, if his own Shares are being used against his better judgment, having been utilized in a Short Sale by another.

Good to hear from you Ed Will be in your neck of the woods next week (going fishing for the last time this season)How is your grand daughter doing? hope all is progressing well. Watched your team against thistle. Think you have a very useful midfield definitely a better team than last season. it will be a pleasure to win the league this year : >))

Veni. Vedi. Flatui

Salve salve Greenwells

A few points about today's game.

Firstly, the defending as a team was poor. I won't jump on the Loovens bandwagon just now - he needs a little time to settle and shouldn't be judged on a couple of appearances. He deserves the benefit of the doubt as those around him couldn't look after their own game never mind help him settle in to the team.

Secondly, why does Giovanni Trapatoni think Aiden McGeady is better on the right but Gordon Strachan thinks he's better on the left? He can do both, but his delivery with his right foot from the right side is so much better than his left from the left.

Thirdly, what is it about Scott Brown that makes his ability to give away possession, over run the ball and generally flatter to deceive totally invisible to Gordon Strachan? This guy has been cut more slack than Hartley, Robson, Riordan, Balde, Caddis, Donati and Gravesen combined.

A few extra comments about Villarreal.

They made two changes at half-time tonight, clearly with an eye on the big game against the Bhoys.

Nihat and Mati Fernández made way for Rossi (who scored the winner) and the winger who made a bit of an impact in the Spanish team at Euro 2008, Santi Cazorla.

On 75m minutes, they took off World Cup winner Edmilson for Eguren.

They clearly have been thinking about the game against us all day. To have done that, and come away with a 0-1 win and no injuries will have made them very happy.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,friend...celt for life.

I stand corrected.

Howevahhhhhh...

I still stand by what I wrote in my last submission on this subject.

I am willing to give Mr.Loovens, at least One more Outing, to see how he performs..before, I am so bold ,as to Write Him Off, as Your Good self... has apparently done.

Whichever one it is I hope you catch one of the monsters I keep hearing about in the local, they are always huge record size fish that always seem to get away.

Second extra point about Villarreal.

This echoes the point U2_1888 just made.

For me, left back Joan Capdevila, who comes over on radio as a really nice guy, has always struck me as a weak point in all the teams he has played for. I must say at this point that I have not, as far as I can remember, ever seen him play in the flesh.

I always thought he looked slow.

Now that he's 30-and-a-half, he looks even slower.

So if Aiden McGeady gets him isolated (easier said than done the way Villarreal play) he could have a lot of joy.

How do you get the guy isolated? I don't know, but I know some people who might.

My Dear friend Kojo I assure you that I would never ever joke about matters financial I asked the question in all humility and good faith and I am very geartful for your most illuminating answer. Just to show you how serious I am I dedicate this to you as I know you are a sucker for a good tune

Last and, perhaps, most important extra point about Villarreal.

They are our friends. I think this is more valuable than three points.

Rivalry in competitive matches will not last, alas. Villarreal, a town the size of Ayr, has only had a team in first division since 1998, and that was for one season only.

Promoted again in 2000, Villarreal have been in the top flight for the whole of this decade.

If it were not for the Anorthosis anomaly, Villarreal would be the smallest town involved in the group stages of this season's Champions' League by a million miles. The capacity of El Madrigal is more than half the town's population.

I would love to be wrong, but this is a situation that seems impossible to sustain. I don't think Villarreal can stay at the top for many more years. Soon, they will be a memory, and I hope a very happy one.

When we played them in April 2004, a very special bond formed, thanks to the way we are, but also thanks to the way they are. The very existence of the Submarí (submarine, obviously, referring to the club's nickname, the Yellow Submarine) CSC is an utterly remarkable phenomenon. I would be asounded of forehead if there were an example anywhere else in world football of what has happened here. To recap: we went to a tiny town in Castellón, lost, and the locals loved us so much that they set up a Celtic supporters club.

The Submarí CSC is there largely because one guy, whose child was sick, was completely and utterly bowled over by the response of Celtic people to his plight.

Imagine that. Imagine a visiting club making such an impression on the local community, for displaying some basic human decency. Fancy that being all you have to do to be the greatest fans in the world.

But it's not to be sniffed at. It's to be treasured, valued, nurtured, celebrated and shouted from the rooftops.

As I say, I hope I'm wrong about Villarreal’s mid-term football future. Whatever happens though, I hope the special friendship between Celtic and Villarreal lasts a hundred lifetimes.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. Celtic_First

Ah'm away tae ma lonely bed - ya beauty !!!!

A most enjoyable game of football which made the result so much the better.

Re: Scott Brown, when you watch the game again, watch his work rate, going forward as well as back. Lock at the space in between him and the first defender when the opposition have the ball. Watch how he does pass and move and offer himself for the return ball. Watch also how often another player will try to over-elaborate and leave him stranded. Observe the ground he covers. Observe how he gets in the faces of opposition players. Observe how he does not give up and is still running whilst others have adopted the old hands on hips ‘aw well I’ve done my bit’.

Granted he had one or two misplaced passes yesterday. So too did Naka and most dangerously so… Crosas. Conversely, Brown was instrumental in playing the telling passes that resulted in some of Celtic’s most dangerous attacks. Or is that part of his contribution to the result so easily deemed irrelevant by some.

He can appear to be a headless chicken because of the ground he covers, and the reason he has to cover so much ground is that some of his teammates have their hands ‘glued to their hips’. Oh! and the ever retreating back four. Reason they retreat? I don’t know but would it have anything to do with lack of pace?

Some people do have an agenda against Scott Brown. Just as they refused to see all the good, that Paul Telfer did, amongst others. Seems to me, that some people just need to have a whipping bhoy. Even when we win and win well they still feel the need to exercise their deep rooted ‘freedom of victimisation’ genes. Others just appear indifferent in giving credit where credit is due.

John67, I'll be there, in the usual place, at the back in the big room, pretending to have work to do at half time.

Kojo, shucks. You're making me feel like Bashful singing about the pole cat when the dwarfs put on a concert for Snow White on her first night.

I'm off to bed, bhoys. God bless all here.

I'll leave you with a cracking quiz.

Apart from what has happened since 2004, there are two less obvious links between Villarreal and Celtic legend Sean Fallon.

I wonder if anyone can work them out. So it's two links on their side, and the Iron Man on ours.

Team for Tuesday

Boruc

Hinkel, Caldwell, McManus, Naylor

Brown, Crosas, Hartley

McGeady Samaras

Vennegoor of Hesselink

Solid base in front of the back four, pace and skill going forward in support of JVOH.

bb

Kitalba,

analyse all you want, excuse him if you like.

Totally out of his depth.

No redeeming features whatsoever.

Kitalba

Completely agree.

I am not saying for one minute Brown had a good game today. But Crosas, after a bright start, faded badly. Indeed he has done this in the last three games. Yet I don't see Crosas getting anywhere near as much flak as Broonie.

I like Crosas very much, but even when not playing well Brown does not hide and does try to drive the team on, vital in a game like today when, let's face it, Sammy excepted NO-ONE had pass marks.

I'd still persevere with Crosas and Brown for a few more games anyway.

notafanofstan:

it is not a case of analysis, it is simple observation of not only what he does when he has the ball, but also what he does when he does not have the ball. Further, what others are doing when he finds himself stranded.

It is obvious from your posts that you don't like the guy, that is your prerogative, but how can you castrate him, if you don’t analyse what his contribution has been; and in the absence of objective analysis… how do you arrive at your conclusive condemnation?

Btw, I thought Artur took his booking for the team. Nothing more.

Kitalba
In total agreement.Don,t understand the Brown criticism.
They should look how often he and Crosas protected a way to deep lying defense/
Think everyone here knows my feeling on our defenses constant retreating.
Brown + Crosas have potential for an excellent partnership but our mids will always have to big an area to cover until the defense is upgraded.

LLU:

LLU:

I agree that yesterday was not one of Brown's best games, but I though he was the most industrious of our midfielders. He is playing to instruction for the sake of the game plan and that game plan got us the result.

I always see the effort he still puts in, in the last twenty when others are flagging.

I'm not saying the guy is above criticism but don’t think that his performance yesterday was proportionate to the negative reviews he’s receiving now.

The bhoy has a lot more to offer if the game plan allows it. He has the heart, and the engine, and the ability to shine.

I actually thought young Crosas was lacking yesterday. His first introduction to the West of Scotland weather, whatever, he did not look as comfortable has he has done previously; but I won’t slate him for it after all the bhoy has the heart, and the vision, and the ability, all he has got to do now is get used to the rain. However, god help him if he has a couple more performances like yesterdays. He might get the Telfer or the Massimo support that we are so adept at.

But I am glad that YOU TOO see some good in Brown and are prepared to support a Celtic player whilst he is playing in the Hoops. Maybe there is hope for Scott yet.

Kojo amigo mio if you are still there, I am not pulling your chain,
any advice you ave to offer would be appreciated.
If you think this is a wind up that is your perogative, but i am sincere

Greenwells

Fan-a-tic:

I believe that they do that under instruction too, to what purpose is beyond me. However in doing so they do not make the job of playing central midfield any easier.

I think Mick is at his best when he attacks the ball, he looks akward when he is back-tracking. At least to their credit they do it as a unit.

I love wee Gordon Strachan and hope he enjoys many more years success at our club, but I think he should be more aggressive going up the park than so aggressive in his zonal approach.

We should have had the game over by half time. Never mind the last ten-minute charge of the Light Brigade.

If we adopted that charge mentality in the last fifteen minutes of the first half maybe some teams would be so beaten they might not take the park again in the second.

We have the players with the ability, and the intelligence, and the will, to destroy teams in the first half, but for some reason we appear to be more concerned of them us doing us harm and we shackle ourselves. Or the system does it for us and if so maybe we should rotate the system.

Showing my ignorance I know but could someone give the details about how Celtic helped the sick Spanish kid. I just assumed it was the overall good behavior of Celtic fans which made us friends all over the world but would love to know the full details.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend... Greenwells Glory..

I do not give financial advice.

I have given, in the past a lengthy dissertation on how I believe this World Wide Downturn, will provide opportunities to make hay while the barn is Burning.

And I have also given advice in visiting certain parts of the economy where the pickin's are plum.

That, my friend is as far as I shall go.

If you are in the situation as you have informed, it appears that you are doing just fine.

To contemplate investing any of your funds at this present time, if you are a complete or near dilletante,in all things financial would be,in your case... Most Foolhardy.

However, once this downturn has passed, and it will..

say..around 2010.

I shall give you the same advice as I have given to another subscriber to this site.

Wherever you are in the world, you will find... Amateur INVESTORS CLUBS..

These Investors Clubs are composed of like minded amateur Investors, who have meetings and discussion...and have the opportunity to pool their resources and invest in Stocks, Bonds and so..

All of these Investor Clubs are Registered and Scrupulously set up.

A quick Google will unearth one that would suit you and be in or near your locality.

Failing that ...there are Organizations of Investors Clubs, that are conducted my mail.. they send out Newsletters which contain up to the minute info concerning stocks and bonds and in that way they educate their Members.

Bottom Line..

Investing like anything else.. requires an apprenticeship, that is if you wish to become proficient, besides, it is a most riveting and interesting hobby, as well as being an extremely lucrative one.

The Best investment counselor is your own self.

I did not wake up one fine day... and decided to invest a heap of money in the stock market...nor did I seek or get any Financial Advice from an outsider.

No..

I started out, like I am telling you....

I joined an Investment Club..I attended their meetings and in that way I learned the ropes from the ground up.

I remember one old gal..who invested her pennies in a new enterprise...at that time.... it was called... TOYS R US...

Anyway... it was a veritable unknown ..it was on the Pink Sheets.. in the U.S. that is about as far from the Nyse as we are from the moon... she bought her shares for 10 cents each..

and even at that...Toys R Us... went Bankrupt..

However, this old gal , persisted ..as she liked the concept, at that time it was a new idea of a Toy Warehouse..

So.. eventually, Toys R Us reformed their failed business plan.. and restarted... She bought a truckful of shares at 8 cents a piece.

That was years ago... but I never forgot... She will be deceased now, I suppose... but her descendants must be doing rather well..because before I lost touch... She Had made... 15 MILLION DOLLARS , and rising at that time , on her penny stock investment.

This sounds like a story..it is not.

However, I am informing you of it as a means to convince you that the best Financial Guru is your own self... that old gal.. used her own knowledge and consideration before she risked her pennies.. there should be..NO TAKING A GAMBLE on any Stock... one must Research and learn everything there is to know, before one makes that plunge...

The very worse thing that you can do...is trust another for advice.. as He is not spending his hard earned money .. all that he is interested in, is his commission on the Stock that he is suggesting for you to invest in.

I have spent too much ink on this..

Bottom Line... Get out there,pal.. and do yer own Financial research and background checks..I have suggested that you join an Investment Club.. but there are oodles of Financial Advice Books...

If you are serious... then get going... no one is standing in your way.

And it is a wholelotta Fun..

AnotherAlexFraeGovan,

I noticed on a post you are based in Sweden. I'm also based there, in Helsingborg. Would be good to get a beer with a fellow Celt if you are anywhere in the South?

Now time for an away win.....

Scott Brown- why are some picking up on his play?
What about his positives, remember his age he is still learning. I see the possability of a real good player developing there, the type of player in the Scholes/Gattuso mould. The type of player the runs about non stop for 90+ mins breaking up play and retrieving the ball. Ok at times his 2nd touch is a tackle, but I'm sure giving time he will learn to control the ball more.

I thought he had a good game, but as I always say if you look for faults you will find them.

Improvement, that's the measure.

The Gate In The Wood

The whole sorry so far in summary form -

Cash-strapped WG is sent with a flea in his ear to his banking adviser, buxom darnelist, Boynita. The bank beauty provides temporary but only financial relief for our hero who sets about plotting the downfall of her relationship with hated local referee, Dougal Stuart. Stuart is cunningly waylaid en route to officiating at Celtic's match at Fir Park and advised by the Wishaw Militia to terminate his links with Boynita. Things seem to be going swimmingly when the similarly-threatened but equally masonic Curry McMichael awards Celtic two penalties at Rugby park. The day promises to get even better for WG when 'Boynita' unexpectedly calls and says she'll be in The Square & Compass pub post-match. Disaster strikes when Our Bhoy falls into the trap that has been set up not by Boynita but by Stuart's new lover, the bank receptionist and maiden-name-fetishist, Catriona. WG finds himself a compass prick away from the First Degree when he is rescused by the Wishaw Militia who have arrived at Lodge Novo (aka The Square & Compass)in the Trojan Horse form of a Brownings Bakery van. Gemmell is rescued but the repercussions are set to.... er ... roll and roll.

Characters to date:-

WG - WinninGemmell, aka Winston Kenneth Mathieson Dalglish Bergkamp Thomas Burns Gemmell, also referred to by Boynita as Winst, by the masonic community as Winston Bergkamp Gemmell and by the Wishaw Militia (of which he is Commander-in-Chief) as Dick Collins.

Boynita - blouse-busting bank babe from Ayrshire, Boynita's boniest skeleton so far is the fact that she is the daughter of ....

Sir Gordon Duffield - WG's sworn enemy, former-Ranger,Right Worthy Master of Lodge Novo and Chief Executive of the SFA, friend of.....

Dougal Stuart - Lananarkshire-based masonic referee and former lover of Boynita who works beside ....

Catriona - gold-digging multi-faced darnelist bitch of loose morals who is currently seeing Dougal Stuart but who is eyeing.....

Ramsay Gordon - celebrity masonic chef and ex-Ranger, friend of....

Curry McMichael - part-time pastor-referee and full time mason, friend of.........

Sir Fergus Alexanderson - word-slaughtering masonic manager of Banchester United, friend of......

Brown Browning - baker to the brethern, Browning was also kidnapped by the Wishaw Militia to facilitate the rescue of WG from Lodge Novo.

Wilma - Duffield's secretary.

The Good Ghuys (so far) :-

NAFOS - aka Naf

SOAL - aka Arthur or Arthur Lee

Ulysses McGhee - aka Uly

The Badger - Monday night drinking partner of The Lhads

Curly - first person to represent the wider CQN community, one of WG's Top Thousand protestants and a bald fly in Duffield's ointment.

Episode 44

Duffield phones Browning's Bakery

Brownings: Browning's Bakery, say 'NICE' tae a peppered steak slice. You're through to Bertha, how may I help you ?

GD: Hi Bertha, I'm looking to talk with Brown Browning ?

Bertha: Would that be Brown Browning Snr or Brown Browning Jnr ?

GD: I'm rather not sure. I did not know there were two.

Bertha: Is the Brown you seek male or female ?

GD: How do you know of my interest in such matters ?

Bertha: I don't or, rather, I didn't. Male or female, Mr ...... ?

GD: Er....... Duffield, Gordon Duffield and..... er ... male ... please.

Bertha: One moment whilst I transfer you - bet that's not the first time you've heard that line, Mustscore Suffield !!

Brown Browning Snr: Brown Browning, how may I assist you ?

GD: You can start by sacking that cheeky bitch of a receptionist, Bertha.

BB: How dare you insult my wife, Brother Duffield.

GD: My apologies Brown. I'm stressed out my tree just now with all the Lodge trouble, Boynita being on my case, failing health and a lack of sponsorship.

BB: Failing health ? That's a bit rich, Duffield. You weren't the one held to ransom by some of Lanarkshire most feared freedom-fighters.

GD: Terrorists, Browning.

BB: I was lucky to escape with my life, for pity's sake. I hate to add to your woes but I'm unilaterally cancelling the Lodge catering contract. You can advise Ramsay I'll make good any financial shortfall.

GD: You can't do this to me, Brother Browning.

BB: I can, I will and I just have. Anyway why do you call ?

GD: Oh it's all rather pointless now. I was going to request a favour and ask you to sponsor the Scottish Cup.

BB: You've a right cheek, Duffield. I'd rather sponsor the European Cup replica at Parkheid than help you out. Would there be anything else ? I'm a busy man.

GD: Yes. Is there any truth in the story that your famed recipe for the fondant in the Narrowboat macaroon bar doubles as a soothing agent for itchy and blistering scalps ?

BB: As a matter of fact there is. I'll have a five-litre tub delivered to SFA Headquarters first thing tomorrow morning. Anything else. I really must press on.

GD: Yes, what age is your daughter, Brown Browning Jnr ?

BB: Our future business will be conducted solely on the square, Brother Duffield. Goodbye.

TBC

I haven't read any other views ,but a couple of my own observations from yesterday's match.

Mark Wilson, goes to sleep and does not tuck in when we are attacked down our left handside.

Resultantly when a cross comes into our box from the left ,the opposition player is invariably goalside of him.Schoolboy stuff really.Sad that he gets caught out like this as often as he does.

Lee Naylors distribution is quite simply awfull. He would be aswell with a lump of wood, instead of his right leg.His inability to complete the most simple of passes in shocking from a professional footballer.

If Mark Crosas is to be a success we have to get the balance right in the midfield.
He is still learning a new type of football, which must be taken into consideration, but he rarely put's in a tackle, and has poor defensive positional awareness.Resultantly we play a game of ping-pong in the midfield area.

Scott Brown,Oh dear! full of endeavour ,but missing basic ball controll skills.

I predicted that Aiden would come back better for his lay off.
He won us the match. His determination to win the ball ,the resultant winning of a crunching tackle againsta player twice his size. His deadly ,well delivered cross won us the match.
I think that he is much more effective on the right hand side.

Mr Strachan is handling him well.

Thanks to my shiny new Timcard I managed to get in yesterday, no problem.

My main thought on leaving the ground afterwards was that we're going to need a bigger settee to hide behind on Tuesday. I expect Gary the Great, world POTY will return to paper over a few of the cracks but the defence is so poor at present that if we get to 15 minutes without conceding a goal that will be progress. Even with an extra man in midfield it might not be enough to protect a back four of this level of ineptitude.

Let's hope Artur is mentally and physically 100% because he's going to be in for a busy night.

Celticlover

I really do enjoy your post match ratings.

Keep at it.

Parkhead - 8.26pm last night

Hmmm, why would I need to be drooling about Caddis when I have all I need in that department in the boot of my Kangoo? Perhaps you are stuck in some urban sprawl denied the clean air and rolling hills? In such repressed environments the psyche becomes turgid and envious projection is somewhat inevitable...

As to the bhoy in question, if he's good enough he's old enough would seem an appropriate maxim. Well done Mugrew (any chance of a buy back in January Jimmie?)

Daniel Agger is refusing to commit to a new deal at Liverpool until manager Rafa Benitez confirms whether the Dane has a first-team future at the club.

Anybod see his press conference when he joined lIVERPOOL?
Said when he joined them that it will be the closest thing to acheiving his dream which was to play for Celtic. He couldn't stop talking about us at the press conference. Remember it well. Was in shock. He was always stating he would love to play in British football mainly with Celtic.

Was at the game yesterday and agree with earlier posters that you go hoping for an entertaining 3-0 but when you get a last minute winner, their is no better feeling.

I was oh so tempted to phone in to radio snyde yesterday but thankfully restrained. My question " Mr Keevins, on a scale of 1 to 10 , 10 being really gutted, How, gutted do you feel with the celtic result".

As eberdeen went ahead yesterday, the media were no doubt salivating with the prospect of getting tore into Gordon for another week, especially with the goalscorer's past relationship with GS and CFC. Thank you JVOH, Aiden.

I, for one, thought we played well, yes we have failings defensively. However, the high points for me were

Character (cliche, but true)

Great support, even after going down I never heard any moans from the section I am in.

Good sub choice in Aiden for Shaun who, i think, had his quietest game for us since coming home. Isn't it great to have options of that quality.

Really enjoyed the tempo we played and at times some really good football, not quite " cosmic" but good to watch.

Georgie- hands up time, I had doubts about resigning him- he will definately do and will only get better.

Crosas- He will get better but I love th eway that the ball always moves on quickly and forward.

Broonie- had my doubts- but I think he is another who is turning the corner- I like how he is trying to push the game forward (just like he did for hibs). Not the best control as has been said many times but we bought him for his drive and that is starting to be more evident. Control gets better when you are more confident.

Yesterday, was a great victory. Aberdeen played well, we played better and we are going to get better. Since our defeat to teh dark side which , imho, was not as one-sided as has been reported, we are starting to gel.

Here we go, 4 in a row

Funny game yesterday. When we were good we were very good.

There was a spell in the first half where we gave the ball away at least 4 times in the same passage of play, everyone was panicing.

I think the early goal caused a bit of slackness and some switched off.

A major factor in winning was Brown's performance in the last 20 minutes. He was really the only midfielder and every time Aberdeen lost the ball in midfield he was there.

I was also pleased that McGeady was involved in the last 2 goals with fairly early crosses from the right.Players on the their wrong side side is something I feel we overdo.
The early ball is often the best as seen yesterday.

Pity Robson is injured for Tuesday as I think he would have been handy in a 4-5-1

What I like about Crosas is the weight of his passes is usually spot-on. Too often the ball is pinged forward as though Usain Bolt is already playing upfront for us, when everyone knows he won't be coming until January. Marc's main problem so far is playing well beyond half time.

He is definitely worth persevering with, and Caddis is also overdue a chance to improve our defence.

This is pretty uplifting article

Celts eased grief after son's death

Sep 28 2008 By Gavin Berry In Villarreal

CELTIC'S visit to Villarreal will prove an emotional event for one of the Spanish club's biggest fans.

Ernesto Boixader is a familiar name to the Parkhead side after setting up a Celtic Supporters Club in Villarreal.

It was his way of thanking the Hoops fans who helped him fall in love with football again.

A former player for the Yellow Submarine, the tragic death of his seven-year-old son Ernest from cancer left him feeling like life had little meaning.

But shortly after Ernest's death Celtic travelled to Villarreal for the second leg of their UEFA Cup quarter-final in 2004.

And after partying before and after the Spanish side's 2-0 win in El Madrigal, Boixader formed the Celtic Submari CSC which has 600 members and a base which is a shrine to the SPL champions.

Speaking in the bar where the members meet up every Friday, Ernesto said: "I was jumping around my living room when the draw was made.

"I knew it would mean a repeat of the great experience in 2004.

"Back then, I hadn't been to a match since Ernest died.

"Seeing so many Celtic fans on the streets prompted me to go - and I'm glad I did.

"There were maybe 7000 visiting supporters. With that amount of fans you fear danger and confrontation - yet it was the total opposite with Celtic. In the bars they insisted on paying for our drinks - even though they were in our town as our guests.

"After that I set up the Celtic Submari CSC and we now have a waiting list for membership.

"We've made so many friends from Glasgow it's incredible.

"I've been to Parkhead twice and went on the pitch before matches against Motherwell and Hearts - it's Paradise.

"Tuesday night will be hard. I believe Villarreal will win but after that we can all be friends."

Ernesto has helped the town organise a "Celtic Party" with live music, free food and a big screen plus events to raise cash for a cancer charity.

The 44-year-old still can't believe Villarreal are playing in such big European games after his days as a player when only small crowds turned up.

He made 70 appearances when the side were in the Third Division and said: "We are living in a dream. When I played our opponents were Denia - now it's Celtic."

What I find perplexing about all the selective, and often exclusive, hyper-criticism of certain players, past and present, is that those who are most loyal in their criticism of their particular ‘victim of the day’ appear to delight in micro-regurgitating any, and every, error their particular favourite victim committed. They seem to take an almost perverse pleasure in presenting their particular non-favourite in the worst light circumstances accords them. However, when said non-favourite actually has a good game - then any begrudged credit afforded - is done as thought circumstance… it mugged them.

All in the name of support.

Scott Brown had a decent game yesterday; not a great game; not a bad game; a decent game. He was industrious, he wanted to win, and he worked hard to do his part in securing the ‘required’ three points. Especially so after we went behind.

A litmus test to one of his attributes: next game (not the CL game) corners aside, count how many times he will show up in his own penalty box, the opposition’s penalty box, and both flanks as he supports the man with the ball. Compare this to what others do.

Scott Brown does not hide and he gives one hundred percent every game. He is a team player, playing for the good of the team.

When he has made the sixty or seventy yard run to support a teammate, and often not receive a pass, he will reciprocate the same run to support his defence at the other end of the field. Consequentially, again, he may very well not receive the ball, but without even the hint of a dummy spit, he will again turn and seek to support his fellow mid-fielders and attackers.

We all agree, well most of us anyway, that the boy has ability and potential. He showed it at Hibs, he has done so in a Scotland jersey, and he has shown it at times in the hoops. Don’t you think that if he wasn’t living up to his managers expectations he would be hooked and dropped. After all, this same manager hooked his ‘Captain’ in a cup final when playing his last game; the same manager that showed the door to some of his own expensive signings. The manager has bottle and he is his own man. He believes what he sees and does not let the opinion of others cloud his judgement.

Scott Brown has more ability than a lot of others, he is not sublime, he doesn’t do sublime. He does honest graft and he puts himself in… where others would shrink. He is a better footballer than Neil Lennon was and he has a tank that would equal, if not surpass, Stan Petrov’s. Unfortunately, for me, because he is maybe not a Northern Irish Catholic, maybe not a ‘heart bleeds green’ Celtic supporter from birth, maybe not, the most gregarious and play to the crowd badge kisser, some just refuse to admit his redeeming attributes. The desire to win, and the will to give it his all.

There was quite a bit of gossip about how much of a Rangers supporter he was as a youth. Would never be a wee bit of ‘closet bigotry’ clouding some peoples’ judgement now… would there? Nah!... Didn’t think so. Not on here.

Somebody once said something like,

" the pictures are better on Radio"

I never really appreciated the full meaning of that phrase until yesterday's game against the dandy dons.

Arrangements to watch the hoops on polski tv in Cork were dashed by the the missus informing me that I was required to ferry her into civilisation for an unscheduled Hair Appointment. Now, just as "she must be obeyed" neither can "Hair Appointments" be changed.(Never.) I think it's something to do with an almost freemason-like bond between the appointed HEAD and Most-Worshipful HAIRDRESSER.

So, slightly bowed I prepared to listen to the game on BBC Lite (Scotland)and was greatly relieved to find that the awful David Begg was not to be my host for the 90 mins. Instead, the unfortunately named John Barnes and wee Murdo were in the chair. But more on them in a bit.

I set myself down in earshot, with large mug of tea and access to an unopened pack of ginger nut biscuits. For now, the 4 fridge-bound but NOT frigid, cans of Beamish would have to loiter with intent until all car duties were dispensed with.

The game set off at a cracking pace, typical hundred mile an hour stuff.....and seemed just to get quicker! As another cliche goes, so far...so CELTIC. Contrary to the Broon detractors amongst the support, it SOUNDED to me like he was involved in everything, running back and forth, harrying, getting stuck in, breaking up play etc etc. Big Jan's name kept on being mentioned too, from where I sat it certainly felt that the big fella put in a helluva effort and his top'n'tail goals just capped a great shift from our mercurial Dutchman. The subs too, both heralded an audible change in the tempo of the game, the welcome roared by the support pulsed through the radio - Victory although uncertain seemed a definate possibility with their arrival, if only decibels counted as goals!

Nerve-jangling stuff, punctuated with volcanic eruptions of joy as last gasp victory was secured, a fantastic game for those who witnessed it and those of us from the "armchair" brigade.

Now I am no fan of the media in Scotland in general, but John Barnes was a real wet blanket from start to finish, apparently the floodlights were not on from the start of the game and he dragged the hoary old "biscuit tin" analogy out as some hilarious insight into the workings of our club. (Ah the banter!) For me this set the "tone" for his commentary, always looking for the negative as far as Celtic were concerned. He dismissed talk of rotation policy in favour of insinuating a "rift" wibetween WGS and Aiden.(Please BBC!). As for his comments regarding Eddie Smith, I do beleive he sarcastically made a reference along the lines of

"Well its not unusual for Eddie Smith to let Celtic away with...". Hunbelievable.

Anyway, as I was saying, "Watching" the game on the Radio, can like yesterday, be a fantastic experience. The colours are better, the atmosphere , the DRAMA and the spectacle all enhanced but even with all this, poor standards of commentary increasingly make me want to Listen with the sound turned down. Shame.

Paul67, please keep up the good work, intelligent thought provoking articles on all things Celtic.

Delighted with the result yesterday. a game that should have been won was nearly lost
then won again, in yet another dramatic finish we took the points and thats all that matters.

The reason why we went behind was down to bad defending and I fear the worst on Tuesday night in Spain. no point in going over old ground about the left back situation that was an aberration in the summer window.

But WGS now has problems at right back all of his own making, as I thought Mark Wilson was invisible again in the second half against the Dons. I hope Hinkel is restored if he is not injured
he hasn't set the heather on fire, but he is a much better defender than MW imo.

Loovens needs time, and I reckon we will see Hartley back in midfield possibly at the expense of Croasas though I know who i would choose.

Samaras leads the line nicely and its great Skippy got his goal as well.

DBBIA,

Our current defence has been cunningly designed to take us to the next level in Europe - the details of this plan are scribbled in code on GP's fabled clipboard. It is said that the Large Hartson Collider is more reliable than the Caldwell Uncertainty Principle. Whatever way the electrons spin, a third place finish (the new level?) will be good for our Coefficient of Rubbishness; a fourth place finish will almost certainly lead to crest fission, blog meltdown, unclear fallout...but 4-in-a-row. We will remain top of the Credit Crunch League. We will also be expecting rain...

Welcome back.

The Celtic Rainy Day Trust yet again is fuelling speculation about inclement weather conditions in an attempt to bring its own vision of where Celtic should be to the top of the agenda. The "there may be trouble ahead" nonsense in which the CRDT indulges is not fitting for any organisation with the word "Celtic" in its name. Bean counting and bean hording is all very well but is ultimately self defeating since the more beans you horde, the longer it takes to count them, leaving less time to horde thereby reducing the stockpile of beans which then take less time to count allowing more time to horde etc and so on ad nauseum.

Not to put too fine a point on it, I think this organisation should be abolished forthwith along with short selling of shares by hedge funds and Carla Bruni records in any languae including French.

Kitalba,
Well said, that man.

In this instance it is Scott Brown, before it was Gary Caldwell(boy, did we miss him yesterday)
Seems there always has to be a player that gets ripped to shreds.
It must be really encouraging for these young guys out there trying their best on our behalf (FFS!!) to hear their character and talent and committment to our cause being rubbished by comments such as we have seen on here and other places.

Does being the greatest fans in world simply amount to being able to be drunk in other's countries without wrecking it?

Hardly.

I would've thought it would involve some degree of the quality of our support for the team and the players.

We have just won the league 3 times in a row. We are playing in the Champions League, looking for a place in the last 16 for the third time in a row with a young side that could, if given the time and encouragement, become a really good side.

I have watched games where Shunsuke Nakamura hasn't even turned up
and he never recieves anything like the criticism handed out to some of our less experienced players.
Obviously this is just my opinion.

It is everyone's right to criticise.
Everything is permissable, not everything is beneficial( by the way, that is God's opinion - 1Co 6:12)

It's a funny old game!

RRC - tin hat at the ready.

Kitalba, great post re Broonie.

He has been good for us before. He will come good for us on a more consistent basis in the future. He's a young laddie who still has some learning to do.

As well as personal circumstances last season, he had to adapt to how other teams play against the Hoops as opposed to how they play against Hibs. I believe he is starting to adapt and thought he played well yesterday.

Subt- after we left BBs yesterday [ hot topics- Americana Awards, hopes and fears for Villareal, the catheter requirements of General de Gaulle...] we had the pleasure of an encounter with a group of neds who gave us a quick chorus of TFS as we walked past.

One of the best things about playing Aberdeen is their support; they got behind their team for the full 90 minutes without once mentioning religion nor DNA. They were probably worth a draw.

Having just got round to reading through since I left to go to the game yesterday, I see kitalba has helpfully verbalised my view of Scott Brown so I don't have to.

I sat yesterday with a disgrace of a "fan" in front of me, who sat shaking his head, tutting, looking at the rafters and calling every player everything under the sun throughout the entire game. There were two blokes behind me calling Scott Brown various pieces of female anatomy for most of the game. He has replaced Gary Caldwell, who replaced Paul Telfer, as the most scrutinised and criticised player on the park. If people would pay that much attention to, say, Aiden McGeady, they would see him squandering opportunities, taking one extra guy on instead of making the pass, whatever. No one player is 100% perfect all of the time - but only a select few are criticised almost constantly for it.

For what its worth, I though Loovens was the worst player on the park for the first half, with a display of ineptitude not seen since Stephane Henchoz decided to gift Hearts a barrowload of chances three or four years ago. I didn't boo him once.

On Tuesday I think we should go with a 4-1-4-1 the team I would pick is

Artur

Wilson, Loovens, Mick, Lee

The Ghod-like Caldwell

Aiden, Brown, Crosas, Maloney

Sammi

GC playing the sweeper role spraying passes and controlling the game. 1-0 to Celtic with this formation, now that I have solve Celtic's CL away record I am off now to Washington to solve the Credit Crunch.

Like yourself I remain extremely concerned with Artur Boruc's form. Not nearly as commanding as his build - or his reputation - would lead us to believe. I couldn't really fault him for any of the goals but his attempts at coming for crosses - when he decides to - are poor.

Kicking the ball from his hands he just balloons it as high as he can with the result that its coming to earth almost vertically! What on God's Green Acre is JVOH - or anyone else supposed to do with that. A few weeks on the bench would do him no harm Now he'll probably make a liar of me and play a blinder on Wednesday night!

For the record I thought Skooh had a more than reasonable second half.

dbbia:

I too, thought Aberdeen were hard done by not to take something from the game, but for me that makes our result all the more pleasing because we beat a football team who came to Parkhead and tried to play the game as it should be played.

From a spectators perspective anyway.

kitalba 11:07

Well said.

As I said in an earlier post I believe, & I would bet on it.
In time he will go on to become a Celtic great, he is the type of player most teams would want.
He will be our scholes/gattuso, he's that type of player & they allow the others to do their part as they can rely on him to cover and break up the oppositions play while they return to position. Also to pick up the scraps when he forces the opposition into errors. In a couple of years time I reckon we will have to fight to keep him.

C'mon the Hibees!!

Hail Hail 4iar!!

Cheers Joe and cheers to all the supporters who love to support the team; even when we... win.

Prior to the death of Lawrence Payton in 1997 the original line-up of the Four Tops, namely Stubbs/Fakir/Benson/Payton had been together unchanged for over 40 years; a world record in popular music.

Now only Abdul' Duke' Fakir is still alive, and still singing with the group.

Nice formation, thought along that way myself. He hasn't had much of an opportunity but a late switch Wilson for Caddis would put a spark into the game late on. I've always believed GC could play that role well protecting the defence, and his distribution is good. That formation would give the attacking players the confidence to make runs with GC & Crosas's passing ability. Hope GS is a lurker ;->

cadizzy

I accept the good list but you might have to explain Jesus and Mary Chain's position to me.

Also Marmalade and Lulu have to be in both. Hughie Nicholson's Marmalade, only lasted a year, but it was a huge improvement on Marmalade Team One, and what about Hughie's own band which went under the unfortunate moniker, Blue?

Lulu is thoroughly dislikeable and may be an embarrasment, on your behalf, to the Anglo-Scots community but...

she did a good job on Shout and a great job on "To Sir With Love"

I'd give her ten minutes in the good list before she rejoins the bad list.

And finally, there must surely be a 7th circle of hell reserved exclusively for the anti-music that is Wet Wet Wet?

Cadizzy
Where would you place Nazareth?

Personally I thought they were one of the best rock bands to ever come out of Scotland
RRC

chairman's letter to celtic supporters

Newsroom Staff
CELTIC chairman John Reid has written to supporters who contacted the club following the recent home game against Rangers to express their concerns about sectarian behaviour - and in particular the singing of the so-called ‘Famine Song’ by large sections of the Rangers support - and to ask for Celtic to make the club's position clear. John Reid wrote:

'Along with many others, I know you have written to the Club about the behaviour of visiting supporters who gave vent to a song which I have no hesitation in condemning as racist and deeply offensive. As both Rangers Football Club and Strathclyde Police have stated, the content of the song - which is directed against the community of Irish descent in Scotland - is in breach of Race Relations legislation and exposes its perpetrators to the risk of prosecution.

The Irish Famine was a human tragedy of immense proportions. It is one of the few such events for which the British Government has expressed specific regret for its share of responsibility. Few of those who sing this song will have stopped to think that Famine is non-sectarian and the millions of people who died or were forced into mass emigration - some of them to Scotland - were from all faiths and traditions within Ireland.

We should condemn racism and sectarianism without fear or favour wherever they arise. That is an essential part of Celtic Football Club's ethos. The club has always been open to all people. We draw our Board of Directors, shareholders, management, players, footballing heroes and supporters from all races and religions. We draw our very name, Celtic, from the bonds that unite the Scottish and Irish peoples irrespective of political or religious traditions, bonds and a heritage that remain a source of pride to us today.

In condemning the actions of others, Celtic must always be vigilant with regard to our own conduct and reputation. Celtic supporters have received well-earned international plaudits in recent years for the way in which they conduct themselves at home and abroad. But we are not complacent. I would again condemn, without equivocation, the use of any chants or songs which can be interpreted as support for religious or ethnic hatred, or for acts of violence. The assistance of true Celtic supporters in weeding out the minority who persist in that behaviour, usually at away games, is greatly appreciated and results in stringent action.

Thank you again for drawing this matter to my attention. Our supporters can rest assured that Celtic will continue to work with all interested parties to remove the twin cancers of racism and sectarianism from Scottish football and our wider society.

Yours Faithfully
John Reid
Chairman

Before you send the world into premature mourning, I should stress that the main man Levi Stubbs is still alive but has been suffering from long term illness.

Cadizzy

You sir are a Cad for placing the lovely Celtic supporting Clare Grogan in your bad Scottish pop section. I could be happy if you removed the fox-like Scottish pop princess and the anthem singing Skids from that section and bring them back into the valley of of the good Scottish pop. I am also partial to a B&S soppy single.

The bhoy with the arabstrap CSC

There have only been three decent pieces of 'Scottish' pop music; two of them are 'Shout' and the other is 'Ally's Tartan Army'.

Scottish popular music achieved greatness indirectly by being taken south of the Mason- Dixon line and replanted where it became part of the Electric Soup that is soul/country/bluegrass/blues.

SFTB- delighted that any tears for Levi Stubbs would be premature.

CRDT Blames Fairweather Fans

The CRDT believes that the aspirations of so-called fairweather fans may have an adverse affect on their proposed Executive Compensation Plan. A spokesman said, "It is just not credible for supporters to expect investment in a quality defence if current levels of Executive Compensation are to be maintained. Some put forward the notion that a quality left back will solve all the club's defensive ills, but a healthy balance in the Rainy Day Fund remains the top priority. We are not merely bean counters with a wet and windy economical outlook"

In a separate development the CRDT distanced itself from the "Carla Bruni Affair", stating that "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head", as sung by the late Sacha Distel, was the last great moment in French popular music."

Paul Newman, RIP

I actually liked the Chairman's line that "few of them (the singers) will have stopped to think."

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how the press and the official spokesmen from Ibrox respond to this open condemnation.

For the avoidance of doubt, these are not my lists. Reflections of my life by Marmalade is still one of my favourite songs as is Nazareth's version of This Flight tonight and I would agree that Marmalade should be in both and Nazareth's exclusion from the good list is a tremendous oversight.

As for the Jesus and Mary Chain's, I don't know if even they could explain their position though they are as clear as day compared to the Cocteau Twins. I think it was an Iain Banks character who said that he know he was stoned because the lyrics of a Cocteau Twins song made complete sense.

Av just skim read the comments so if someone other than West Wales Celt and Kojo has raised the same point re Caddis then i include you also.

Caddis can beat a man , can cross and pass to a Celtic jersey consistently well, aggressive, quick brained.

Hinkel and Wilson can not do any of the above.

They are taller.

They cost money
.
They would force Gordon Strachan to admit that MONEY spent to strengthen has been squandered and to make matters worse the solution was under his nose in the shape of Caddis.

Applying the maximum of whats best for Celtic would see Caddis in the team ahead of Wilson and Hinkel.

Gordon Strachan is understandably but wrongly trying to save face.

Yesterdays drama is what makes football so much better than any other form of entertainment.

When the desired outcome is in severe doubt your standing getting droont, nursing an annivesary hangover and that is all forgotten when the winner hits the back of the net.

On Tuesday i would like to see a mid trio of Brown Crosas and Hartely i would like Aiden on the right and Shaun on the left with Naka benched.

Big Sami up front,do a Porto job an win 1-0.

Paul67

Amazing result! The celebrations at the end are what makes staying to the end all about. High fives and much jumping up and down.

Mulgrew I thought, was the best player on the pitch when he came on. Mulgrew and Foster played tremendous during the second half.

Celtic's spirit from 75 minutes on was excellent. Much of the impetus came from the substitution of Maloney for McGeady.

I have to say that Crosas plays far too casually at times and was rightly subbed. McGeady changed the game for Celtic in the second half, surprised he got joy down the RHS.

Brown and McGeady for me were the only two players who weren't hiding when we were 2-1 down. Samaras partly, but especially Nakamura was almost running away from the ball and not making themselves available for a pass.

Wilson for the second time (the first was against Rangers) allows a player 10 yards at the back post. The first time was on the Left-Back role, but this was even less excusable as it was in favoured position.

Loovens and Mick were very bad yesterday. Even during the first half, Aberdeen were creating chances through the middle of Celtic. Part of the reason was that Crosas was posted missing in defence but even this doesn't prevent Loovens and McManus from at least a share of the blame.

Finally, what has happened to Boruc? The more weight he's gained, the less imposing he's become. Mulgrew's free kick was excellent but it wasn't especially quick and Boruc should have been able to cover the ground.

Cadizzy

The list still makes the cardinal error of omitting Glen Daly.

Clare Grogan is miles (lots of miles) better looking than Carla Bruni....and she doesn't sing in Foreign

pggtips2

Mulgrew was responsible for both Aberdeen goals but also very culpable in our winner. He has not yet developed into a good player and it was not an error to let him go.

Can we dump the music and get back to football otherwise we'll get Podium 67 going on and on again about flamin' John Lennon and Imagine on his ipod. Maurice Albert and Feelings as well judging by the other stuff he likes

Where's Fingerprintz and Wet Job? A great Scottish single, for the prog rockers Beggars Banquet and the best Scottish single ever 'we'll be there' by the Bollock Brothers featuring Johnny Rotten when Thatcher banned Scottish supporters from Wembley

have to take issue with the Godlike Mary Chain, Altered Images and Belle and Sebastian being on the bad list (keyboardist Chris Geddes is One of Us, I once saw him at Celtic Park with Joe McAlinden of various Bellshill bands "fame" and Stephen Pastel, Chris got swatted by the tail of a particularly excitable police horse). No room for Teenage Fanclub? Met Gerry Love in Seville, he is one of the nicest men in Scottish music.

Why no takers for the Villarreal and Sean Fallon connections quiz? Too hard for yeeze?

I think it may have something to do with ease of movement and congregation in the stadium.

Many who joined the GB crowd on Tuesday graduated there because the noise and colour drew them there and there were empty seats to be had near the fun. On Saturday the GB crowd had their usual seat occupiers amongst them and they have the same enthusiasm for joining in as the rest of the home crowd stadium.

I don't know if the club has the appetite to support the GB venture given that they are quite oppositional to the Board despite their support of the team.

Gourockbhoy :- I didn't take latin at school, it was later on I took up an interest in it due to my ex wife who like me was a saddo that liked puns and she used to make quite a few in latin (it was her that pointed out to me the pun reason the inquisition were called the hounds of god). I'm not to bad at the reading and writing side but I wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce 95% of the words.

fourstonecopi- They are truly beyond redemption, I have Setanta next door but refuse to watch or listen.

At last Dr John Reid has unequivocally linked the supporters of RFC and racism. This will reverberate around the world, The Irish Times has already picked this up and put the story on line.

I do think the club should have went further- they should have highlighted the equally offensive and despicable campaign against Scotland's greatest ever manager.
Secondly the racists should be summarily banned from Celtic Park, if the club intends to ban some of our own support for unacceptable and offensive behaviour then they should be consistent and treat supporters of other clubs similarly. Supporters of RFC en masse are 100% guilty- no question.

goldstar10

Excellent points well made.

Hibs look poor, I thought they were better than this.

I'm going to write to Setanta, to ask why they persist in delivering this racist bile to my living room at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. I may also follow up with an Ofcom complaint.

PJBhoynyc on September 28, 2008 2:56 PM

I don't think he is threatening our supporters, more he is pointing out that we have cleaned our act up, in terms of inappropriate singing at home, and that where a minority continue to behave inappropriately our "majority" act to stop it. Thus he is having a dig at rearrangers, in my opinion anyway, who claim it is only a minority of their supporters behaving badly and that they are doing all they can to stop it. In a nutshell he is saying "look we have acted to stop inappropriate behavior they have not.".

SonsOfErin

Does anyone out there know why DR. Reid's statement was released today?

Hail Hail

Sons of Erin and Private memoirs

The official line on this from Ofcom is that, because Setanta is registered in Luxembourg, it, Ofcom, has no authority over what they broadcast.

Owen, I'm with PJ.

Rebel songs have never been racist but racism and republicanism are consistently linked as two sides of the same coin. Personally, I'm sick of the club's heritage being forever 'sanitised' in a ridiculous attempt to appease others. It would seem that, for a substantial number of Rangers' fans, appeasement will only be satisfactory when we 'go home'.

Reid's position is not far short of the old 'just as bad as each other' line that has for so long been used to justify the racist, bigoted element attached to Rangers....

WWC

Thanks for the info Celtic_First.

M.Sylla - The Ofcom code is quite clear on the matter. If nothing else, when the programme is likely to contain material which may cause offence then the broadcaster has a responsibility to warn the audience. Setanta can hardly claim they did not know Rangers fans would sing racist material, they sing it every game.

Can you imagine if Setanta had to announce a warning before Rangers games?

Keep the pressure on, from as many directions as possible.

Celtic_first - No way am I having that.

I pick Setanta up on terrestrial, is someone going to tell me that terrestrial signal is broadcast from Luxembourg?

No response or acknowledgement from my MSP Pauline McNeil.

Totally disagree that Reid's statement attempts to link our fans with theirs. I think it was an enormously well worded, brilliantly crafted statement where Reid's political experience and sharp mind for PR clearly comes to the fore.

His comments on the Celtic fans are almost an afterword, and one that was neccessary if the statement is not to be ignored by the media as one-sided. Look at what he said; more importantly, look at what the statement did NOT say.

It did not mention Republican songs. What it DID do was condemn the very small number of Celtic fans who sing songs of religious or ethnic hatred; we know which songs he means there. He then mentions songs which appear to support violence, and how ANYONE could interpret this as being a reference to Republican songs is beyond me. It's clear he means the Nacho Novo song there, which to the best of my knowledge NO-ONE on this board supports.

The statement does NOT criticise, in any way, the singing of Republican/political anthems ...... and nor would I expect him to. He knows far better than most what the difference is. And he also knows the law. Disliking this man has blinded some to his intentions, and I would urge all those folk to stop and think before simply concluding he's having a go.

I don't like the man myself, don't think he should be chairman of our club, but that's a political view as a result of his support for the Iraq War. What I know of his abilities and his temperament though leads me to conclude that as long as he is at the helm of this club we will never allow ourselves to be bullied or slandered by ANYONE.

This is the REAL John Reid, finally, and what this announcement does, at long last, is announce to the world at large that the rules have changed.

Watch our Rangers. The Rottweiller is loose.

Sorry if this is a double post...

I wondered if anyone has had any positive response on TFS from their MP or SMP?

I received a token reply from MP John Robertson and some photocopied Show Racism the Red Card literature!

I think JR has done a MON here and brought up a controversial subject just at/before a major european game thereby giving the subject maximum exposure. Celtic are news in a sporting sense prior to the game both here and in Spain. This letter to the fans will be availabe for download/general copy from routers AP etc. for the masses of lazy journo around euripe looking for anything interesting re garding our club....well, I think this is kind of interesting and I bet Im not the only one.

Well done John Reid, I think he is going to enjoy being chairman of CFC.

I have never equated Republicanism with Racism. In fact as an Irish Catholic from Co. Armagh I've been on the end of a fair bit of Anti Catholic/Irish Racism. My point is we, supporters, were told to stop singing songs which linked the club with physical force Republicanism, i.e. BOTOB, etc, as this was hampering the development of the club financially. The board has never stated, to the best of my knowledge, that Republicanism is immoral, wrong or anything else, they have just separated the FOOTBALL from the politics. Holding Republican views is perfectly respectable, but singing songs which could bring harm to the club had to stop. Over at rearrangers they just ignore the problem and the neanderthals take it as tacit approval of their actions. John Reid is only trying to highlight the different approaches of the two clubs to the issue.

Jaysus, just excuse my whole piece for spelling errors, thanks.

Obviously a good result yesterday but overall a disappointing performance. Defensively we are shocking when teams come at us, particularly through the middle. Not sure if Loovens is the answer, he needs more time, but we need a quality stopper to play alongside Caldwell. GC is the one defender we have that is top quality. O'Dea and Caddis could well establish themselves over the next couple of years but it is unfortunately going to take injuries to multiple players for them to get their chance.

Naka is looking really tired and out of sorts. He almost cost us a goal at the end by making a poor decision and poor execution of a pass - the sign of a tired player. Once again Artur saved the jerseys by coming off his line and forcing the player to shoot wide.

Excellent contribution from Aiden coming off the bench and saving 3 points. Maloney needs to understand that he needs to play at the level Aiden showed if he is to keep his place in the starting 11.

We have played well recently against poor teams but we have yet to show we can deliver when it really counts. Aalborg, Rangers and Aberdeen have closed us down relatively easily. Aberdeen yesterday just ran out if steam, a bit like CQN, with 10 mins to go and we got out of jail.

Hopefully the bhoys can dig deep and find something that gets us a point on Tuesday.

James Forrest, don't disagree with your analysis of what is and is not acceptable in respect of the Celtic singing repertoire. However, I'm not sure that such a careful, considered and 'specialist' interpretation of Reid's statement will be the common approach adopted by the media and those outwith the Celtic diaspora...

I do not feel as virulently as others in respect of Reid's political past so it's nowt personal. Just think the '2 sides of the same coin' association needs exposing (not pandering to) and that his statement does the latter - more poodle than rottweiller?...

Corrib04
Makes sense...Does anyone think this is the opening salvo from DR Reid and that board have "stepped up" on the the matter?

Well done Dr Reid for officially reflecting the feelngs of our support re the racial hatred song.
Although, whilst condemnation is all well and good surely to god It's not too much to expect our football authorities to have take some action by now.
The bigots visit to Paradise was on August 31st and we've played five matches since then and still no action other than idle threats of arrest. Well as you can still hear, wheather it be home or away, threats have not stopped them, only action will and I wont be holding my breath.
The bigots show no fear unlike the SPL chiefs who's shameful silence in my opinion makes them complicit.

Must respectfully disagree with you...

But does the Dug have teeth?

The letter does not 'attempt' to link our fans with theirs.
It unequivocally does link our fans with them.

I agree with what you say about it being well worded, brilliantly crafted statement from someone with a sharp mind for PR. I know you and I both share an interest in all things media related....
But for me this has reached the stage where TRUTH should be outed. They deserve to be suspended from Paradise. Any difficulties that arise from that would simply draw attention to their behaviour. The time for PR has passed. The language and craft of well worded statements to satisfy the media is kowtowing to the God of SPIN...

I understand where you are coming from..... But to play the media on their terms does not out the Truth. It reinforces their presentation of it. Banning Them would force the issue. If they are Racist, as the Chairman and anyone right minded person acknowledges, why not suspend them from our ground until their illegal behavior improves. Not to do so, paradoxically, condones racist behavior.

In a game of Chess, losing your Queen is like losing your integrity. They have lost theirs. Its Time for Check (mate).... Not strategy.

West Wales Celt:

Oh I doubt very much that the press will interpet this as being a softly-softly approach to Rangers ! Look at the culture Reid comes from; David Milliband writes a column for The Guardian where he tries to rally a beleagured Labour government and because Gordon Brown's name is not mentioned the entire media (rightly) reports it as a defacto leadership challenge !

Reid knows how these things work. The things that stand out in his statement are the points where he calls the Rangers fans racist and quotes the law; as a former Home Secretary I very much doubt the media will even ATTEMPT to argue that one with him.

Reid is also having a go at the sporting press in this country, which first ignored this issue and has, lately, tried to turn it into a joke. He is stating, clearly and concisely, and for the official record, that he and Celtic do not share that view. He is doing so in a way guarenteed to make headlines not only in this country but around the world and, as someone else has pointed out (and well done!) at a time when when the sporting media of Europe's eyes are on the game on Tuesday.

The statement was very well coached, but he knows what the key phrases were. The Chairman of Celtic FC has called Rangers fans racists and bigots. THAT is news, and will make headlines all across the land.

We've called their bluff here. For a long time it seemed we didn't want the Songs Debate, but now we've made it clear we're willing to take it on. That can only mean that the gauntlet has been thrown down.

This is a declaration of war. The well-crafted language does not hide that fact, and is not intended to. This is a guy who knows his stuff.

Game on, friends.

I guess the good news is that Kenny Miller doesn't have any more former teams to score against!

On a separate note, if Strathclyde Police had admitted that TFS is in breach of the law, has any one asked the Chief Constable exactly how many offenders his officers have arrested so far? If the answer is less that several thousand (and we all know that it would be), then he should be forced to explain why his officers are allowing illegal activities to take place without recourse.

Re Dr Reids reference to the British government apology for their share in the responsibility for the Irish Famine.

As reported in the (London) Independent Mr Blair said "he blamed those who governeed in London at the time for the disaster.

I wonder with whom does Dr Reid think the government shares responsibilty and to what degree?

Agree with almost all of your post. The statement was carefully worded and hard hitting - we now expect the fallout which will happen.

I do differ from you however in that I believe JR was referring to Republican songs when he says "I would again condemn, without equivocation, the use of any chants or songs which can be interpreted as support for religious or ethnic hatred, or for acts of violence." And I believe he was correct in doing so. I'm not going to get into an arguement with anyone on the "Republican songs are / are not racist / sectarian " debate. The point is that they are percieved as being as being so. They are perceived as supporting violence. I really can't see how anyone can dispute this. Again without going into the political arguement these songs do "glorify" (Thats not quite the word I'm loking for but its the best I can come up with at the moment) an organisation which has been involved in a struggle which has resulted in the deaths of many people. It is quite feasible that many visiting fans have relatives who served in the armed forces and who died in that conflict. Indeed I am quite certain that Celtic fans have relatives who served in the forces and who died in "The Troubles"

They would also represent a very limited view of modern Irish Republicanism and they most certainly would not represent the viewpoint of a majority of Irish people - both from the north and the south.

Sorry about going on. Its just that I feel we must accept that the justified outrage we feel at the repugnant and offensive Famine Song is equalled by the outrage opposition fans feel when they hear certain republican songs.

Not posted for a while mainly due to our preoccupation of them.
They have been at it since I can remember. It used to be "No Pope of Rome".IMHO the whole debate has `been kicked off by our pathetic performance against them.I very much doubt this outcry would be the same had they been gubbed.

My mum who was with my son at the time was subjected to some horrific sectarian behaviour from our lot on a train at Uddingston following the Motherwell game. When she asked if they could tone it down in front of the wean she was told where to go.We have lots of work to do before we start throwing stones.

Get this defence sorted pump them at Ibrox and they can sing what they like.

Ah Lurgan53

Lets start that debate. It will take my mind off Tyrone winning the double at least.

The cynic in me feels that Dr Reids letter will end up being reported as a "two sides of the same coin" debate.
From Setants Sports News
"Rangers supporters have been warned that they will face prosecution if they are caught singing the song, but Reid has also warned that the Celtic support must be ‘vigilant’ and careful of what they sing."
From the Irish Times
"Celtic chairman John Reid today condemned as "racist" one of the songs chanted by Rangers fans at the recent Old Firm derby.
Reid, who also warned he would not tolerate offensive chanting by his own club's supporters, has written to Hoops fans about the controversy which erupted after last month's clash between the sides."
From Sunday Business Post
"Celtic chairman John Reid today condemned as “racist” one of the songs chanted by Rangers fans at the recent Old Firm derby.
Reid, who also warned he would not tolerate offensive chanting by his own club’s supporters, has written to Hoops fans about the controversy which erupted after last month’s clash between the sides."Seems to a pattern that while he condemns the chanting by rangers fans , he also will not tolerate offensive chanting by his own supporters. I think that the difference between racist and offensive will be lost and we will be back being as bad a s each other before we know it. Hope I'm wrong.

Owen

It'll take A LOT more to take my mind of that!!

Think i may have been on the same train. Bunch of neds drinking buckfast singing IRA songs for the whole journey. They were singing about Bobby Sands and how when 'Thatcher dies we're having a party'. These idiots would have born long after Sands dies and would have been born just about the time Thatcher was forced out.

We need to get some of our away support's behaviour cleaned up before we can claim the moral high ground!

The BhoyWithTheWaferThinEyes...

Thanks for that.
Just reinforces my point.
I fear we missed an opportunity and needlessly put our own Queen under threat in this game of Chess....

have just read JR's statement on the official website and i totally agree with james forrest take on it, i think the good DR has been very savvy with the timing of the statement just before the hordes of hades visit the only other club in scotland overtly proud of thier Irish roots, and before a UCL group match.

There is probably a lot more going on in the background at CP that we do not know about regarding the BJK and TFS bile and i would bet that the unseen fenian hand is very much at play.

How utterly utterly stupid are the hordes of hades? surely they must know they would be under the microscope, but they just keep belting them out, but i didnt really expect anything different.

It is also a disgrace that the SFA/SPL have not done anything about it either!

Was thier any comments on the radio coverage of the game about it??

gebhoy

TheBhoyWith... sadly, I think you're spot on.

James Forrest - I think the pattern TheBhoyWith... exposes and the views of Lurgan53 reinforce my view that this will blow over as another 'they're both as bad as each other' smoke screen.

Lurgan - there may well be republican songs which eulogise violence (I don't claim to be any kind of expert in this regard). Equally, PIRA have done some things I could not defend. However, not all songs that 'eulogise violence' are deemed offensive ('Flower of Scotland' anyone?) and the neat demonisation of the organisation on one side of a conflict by the media of its opponent is common practice and deserving of scepticism.

We are inundated with positive images / symbolism of the British Army which those who have suffered at its hands might find offensive or a eulogy of violence. I wouldn't want to restrict it but think we should remember that one person's terrorist....

Amandla anyone?

Nelsboy & monthetic

I sympathize with you and your families experience on the train. It would be foolish to say that any group of supporters are completely devoid of brainless, egocentric uncivil yobs. Unfortunately I believe there are more and more of them as our culture evolves within what I like to call the All Consuming Great Dumbing Down.

That said, I believe that comparatively speaking...

The Celtic Support is Better than That as a General Rule..... There is always the odd Exception to the Rule... But to focus on a few bad apples of our own, while confronted with the Great Dark Forest of Racism nurtured by the Hateful Hordes.... Well that is like comparing a few bad apples with a Forest. The media do that job very well, we do not have to aid them.

The Difference is as Loud & Clear as the Scottish Medias' selective Hearing

The 'curse on both their houses' syndrome has been the norm for ever.

A piece in the Aberdeen P&J on the racist song of the moment ran with a headline basically saying both sides had a problem. In the text, the journalist had a lot of positive things to say about the Tony Roper Seville play and condemned the song, although only after he had looked up all the lyrics on the internet, which suggests that, “The famine is over, why don't you go home?” was not enough to earn his condemnation.

But then he complained about The Green Brigade and said ONE Celtic season ticket holder he knew had complained to him about having had enough, “especially at away matches”. This reaction from ONE Celtic season ticket holder was enough for the 'both sides' headline.

Quite how this stuff is making it into print is beyond me.

PJBhoynyc

Why now mate?As far as im concerned they can sing what they like.If we are beating them on the field then nothinf else matters.

From John Reid's statement.

"In condemning the actions of others, Celtic must always be vigilant with regard to our own conduct and reputation. The assistance of true Celtic supporters in weeding out the minority who persist in that behaviour, usually at away games, is greatly appreciated and results in stringent action."

First up, let me say again, I live outside Scotland now and don't get to Celtic games now, other than a few testimonials that have taken place here in England and therefore no expert in what is sung by Celtic supporters at games. Some might say that makes my opinion less valid, I politely disagree in advance. And secondly, this is simply my opinion on the subject

It seems reasonable to me that what he is pointing out here is that we cannot ‘have our cake and eat it’ nor do we want to be ‘the pot calling the kettle black’

Having our cake and eating it

In reality and in general perception we will never be or be seen as any different to them while we indulge in the same acts.
If we want to take the moral high ground on this issue we have to be on the high ground.
Do we want racism and sectarainism stamped out.
Or, do we just want Rangers stamped on?

Celtic have regularly praised their fans for their behaviour, why shouldn’t they continue in their efforts to eradicate what they see as elements within our support that endanger the good name of the club. Is this not what we are condenming Rangers for not doing?
The club has to do everything and be seen to be doing everything it can to deal with the issue. Again, is this not what we are condenming Rangers for not being seen to do?

In the lead up to the Kilmarnock game there were numerous posts on this very site asking that individuals who attend away games be on their guard against giving the Scottish media any ammunition to use against the Celtic support in general and the club’s good name in particular by singing songs that ‘can be interpreted etc.

The pot calling the kettle black

Isn’t this what is being peddled out in the Scottish media exactly as we speak?
It seems to me as long as we continue with songs that Can be interpreted etc. that is exactly the approach the media will take and the prevailing opinion that ‘they are as bad as each other’ will continue ad nauseum. I can only speak from my experience in England but I can assure you there is a very large number of people down here who hold that prevailing opinion.
If we give them no room for interpretation…

I personally think the ‘Novo’ song is a disgrace. And from what I know of it there is no need for interpretation – it clearly supports an act of violence. Not much room to manouvre on that one. I personally do not think some of the other songs are sectarian and I don’t think John Reid does either, but in reality at this time they are ‘being interpreted’ as such. No doubt.

We condenmed Celtic for their silence on this and now we are condenming them for acting. We wanted this issue brought out into the open, well it is well and truly out in the open now!

Lets be seen as the club who really did something about this issue.
There is a saying ‘If you want something you have never had, you have to be prepared to do something you have never done’

The club chairman, I expect has issued this statement with the support of the club. This is not, I believe, just his opinion.

He is asking for our support in this too.

This statement is a retaliatory strike from Cel
