Celtic find goals and panache at Kilmarnock

| | Comments (342)
Let's start with the irrefutable positives; Celtic win regularly at Kilmarnock but seldom with such style.  Yesterday's game was more controlled than last week's victory against Motherwell, although the result took longer to put beyond doubt, but Kilmarnock were never a competitive threat to Celtic.

Even this early in the season it's possible to mark out a Player of the Year contender and Giorgios Samaras has all the hallmarks.  His first goal yesterday was delicious.

Some recalled his debut goal also at Rugby Park, but it eclipsed even the Di Canio debut goal at the same venue.  There are very few players in Scottish football who can collect the ball in their own half and simply extend their stride away from all challenges before calmly knocking the ball into the net.

He is a very special player who shone at Heerenveen before struggling to settle in Manchester, and, to an extent, in Glasgow last season, but with each passing week evidence mounts that we have the genuine article on our hands.

He will join Boruc and Nakamura as another tremendous signing for around £1m.

Samaras scored with his penalty; however, Alan Combe got a good contact on the ball, which suggests that we still have a lot of work to do on that front.  No team will attain its potential if it cannot make the most of opportunities from 12 yards.

Practise, practise, practise.

There is still work to do, of course, sterner tests lie ahead, but this might just be the season Celtic morph into an attractive team to watch.

You've got to be happy with a win like that, Crosas is proving to be a missing piece of the puzzle, but Big Sammy's playing the way a striker should, with pace, ambition and movement.

Our players seem more relaxed away from home. Growlers/moaners/booers take note.

I tried that trick with an e-mail Real Radio.
Shamefully quiet.

watched the Aallborg game in the Harp Bar Paris last week. Draught lager at 5.5 euros, all other draughts 6.5 euros. Happy hour from 21.00 hrs, all draughts 5.5 euros. was thinking of going to The Highlander as recommended by "Celticbars" but was assured by "Nils?" the Harp Bar owner that The Highlander is now more of a Darkside pub.

Once again, Crosas plays,Georgious is Man of the Match and Celtic play lovely football. Are these all coincidental or is Crosas really as good ass I think he is?

31003,
cheers, I'm now looking forward to paris.

After reading the MrSpier's latest article I must tip my hat to the man, there are no excuses and he is spot on.

From the previous, thread. (and off topic)

I agree totally. I love simple questions with simple answers, my favourite being: “What is the name of the ship in the movie – Mutiny on the Bounty?”

Some of the answers I have heard to that have creased me right up.

One of the questions I love asking those celebrators is: “How and where did Billy die?”

My favourite answer to date: “Sure, everybody knows that he died in the Crusades and they cut his heart out to bring it back to Ulster”.

Classic.

Does anybody know if there are any pubs in costa del sol showing home games live. Just booked a holiday that doesn't clash with CL games. But going to miss Hibs on 25/10.

I think recollections of not very clever TFODs we have encountered could be a whole thread in itself.

I know we come in all shapes and sizes (and quite right too) but they really do seem to corner the market in brute force and ignorance.

I think perhaps my favourite was when, in a previous life, I taught a wee boy who had three brothers, all called William. He was the only one who wasn't.

At the parent's night I asked his dad, who was wearing a Rangers top, 1992 Adidas version, with big white things on the shoulders, top too wee for him, you can imagine....why he called three of his boys William. "Jis like the name!" he boomed.

He got up and as he walked out the room I saw the name on the back of his top. McOist. Spelled just like that!

On another point - If you're staying outside the town you may find it very difficult to get a taxi home. Had to walk home a few times!

Try The Laurels for dinner / lunch. Good food at reasonalbe prices. Run by an English couple.

Raymac.

When is the Famine song debate coming on?
Gergory Campbell should be ignored.

There y'go. Tic Talk makes a liar outta me!!

Grrr!!

Ah, OK, I only really know round Benalmadena and Torremolinos. There are a couple of bars that I mentioned on a previous thread - Inchys and Stephen's Green in Benalmadena (don't think Stephen's Green gets the home ones though, and you'd need to ask the owner in Inchys to put the game on), and Baileys Bar in Torremolinos. You can google the websites for Inchys and Stephen's Green, and Baileys in on the celticbars website.

TicTalk - Crosas looks a very promising player indeed. If I had one criticism it would be that he looks a little lightweight for the role, having said that he is still young and can develop physically, plus a slight physique never did Fabregas any harm.

The way he is playing I still have fears that this is nothing more than a 2 year loan, and we'll lose him to Barcelona at the finish. If for no other reason than the buyback clause is around 1.5million, I think, and his value will be at least triple that if he develops like he can. Simple economics for Barca, so for the moment I'll remain pragmatic.

At the moment the Brown - Crosas partnership seems to work very well and would be my choice for most games. But there were times yesterday when both were far too close together, making pointless 5 yard passes to each other. One such pass played Crosas into serious trouble when a Killie player behind him, which Brown had a clear view of, caught him on the ball and tackled. I'm hoping they'll work on this aspect of their play.

Fred C Dobbs, do you think the moaners and the growlers will take note that supporting yer team helps?

Crosas does look like a player but so did Massimo at this point last season.

Scott Brown looked like the player we thought we where getting last season. I dont think its a coincidence that Crosas was beside him.

Its the first time Brown has played next to a "footballer" For all I like Robson and Hartley, there game is all about harrying, chasing, closing down opponets although Robson is no bad at going forward.

The two of them are too similar to Brown (who is vastly superior). Having Crosas just sit deep and close down SPACE and not the man (closing down space can be/is more effective somtimes then closing the man) Picking the ball deep and then either Lennonesque little 5 yard passes or 20 30 yard balls allows Brown to play.

Crosas and Brown MUST be our new midfield pairing.

This place is between Benalmadean and Torremollinos

When you said `a little lightweight` my mind said "What about Fabregas?" before my eyes reached your next comment!

Hi Paul,

Great Article

I note from your article, re penalties, you say "Practice, Practice, Practice", however practice in my opinion can only get you so far, you cant re create a pressure situation and lets be honest unless a team is winning by at least 2 clear goals a penalty is a pressure situation.

For me the people that are most successful in taking penalties have a confidence (almost arrogance)when stepping up to take penalties that they believe they cannot miss, they are almost without nerves.

I also firmly believe the style with which Barry Robson takes penalties is not conducive to a long term success ratio, if you look at the best penalty takers in history ie Shearer, Le Tissier and Cantona to name but 3 they always placed their penalties.

Fair enough people might argue Shearer blasted Penalties but they were always in the corner, they were never down the middle like Robson,s against Rangers at the end of last season.

For me as I said place your penalties with conviction and give off the body language (to the goalkeeper) that you believe you are incapable of missing.

As I have also said practice can only get you so far, you cant re create a pressure situation.

I would be interested in your thoughts Paul.

Hail Hail Roccobhoy.

Wow, after all these weeks I am still signed in!

Missed all the games so far, and missed the game yesterday so as to watch the first half of Zenit-CSKA (fantastic game which finished 3-1 CSKA), then pay a visit to the Luzhniki to see Spartak Moscow take on Rubin Kazan. Lovely stadium, pity the football on show was terrible. League leaders Rubin took a 1-0 victory thanks to a goal from Sergei Rebrov. They only had one more chance, carbon-copy of the first goal, this time Pletikosa got out quickly to block the shot.

Atmosphere was okay, but when the stadium looks virtually empty, it kind of takes away a bit. The atmosphere at Russia and Wales in the Lokomotiv Stadium was fantastic though, pity it never gets like that against diddy teams at Celtic Park!

Lotw67,
Support a team of Gordon Strachans? What would the daily record/clyde phone-in have to say about that!!!

Penalties. How strange. I chunnered mightily last week that Barry Robson should have given the penalty against Aalborg to Shaun who as I remember was whacking them away with aplomb before he left. Ach well.Still I forgive the wee man as he's not been having a lot of penalties come his way in the past 18 months or so and what we know of him he'll be practicing to make sure he doesn't miss when Georgious undoubtedly does.

Barry Robson shouldn't take penalties 'cos he's left footed. The only left footed player I have EVER trusted to take a penalty was John Collins. I didn't like Alan Thompson taking them either; left footed penalties are easier to read.

With Brown and Crosas in the midfield , we play a more conductive type of football. With Hartley and Robson in there forward play is replaced with a more dogged , steely type game.

When a proper 'Footballer' like Crosas is played in midfield its conductive of a more fluid , forward thinking game. Brown seemed to work well with him in my opinion. Two games Crosas has started both away from home and its no surprise to see our best performances thus far. Hartley passes the ball back too often which results in an aimless punt by a defender , we've seen less aimless punts with Crosas in the team due to the fact he receives a pass and moves to take another one. Hopefully this catches on.

Is Massimo Donati the new Riordan? I think Massimo could play in a midfield with Crosas or Brown for that matter. Guys like this need a little belief to gain confidence.

Loovens will get a game now to the detriment of unlucky G.Caldwell , some would say his sidekick and Captain would be ideal to miss the next game on current form.

Caldwell has improved immensely and I think he'd make a smashing Gaelic Footballer as his handling is superb!

Optimistic LS - I recall Stuart Pearce and Dennis Irwin taking left footed penalties for their clubs for years, they were two of the best penalty takers of their day.

The one thing I'd say about Maloney's penalty was that he took it with _confidence_, something which I think Robson's penalties lack. I wouldn't be upset if Maloney was given penalty duty again.

roccobhoy 1.07

I think clearer guidelines should be issued to the players about who should and, just as importantly, who should not take penalties. I could trace the current penalty malaise back to the pre-season friendly with Southampton. Giorgios Samaras was fouled while bearing down on goal and a penalty was awarded. GS got to his feet, and then won a wrestling match with Barry Robson for the ball. At this point Paul Hartley intervened, wresting the ball from Samaras and giving it to Robson. Barry scored one of the best penalties I have ever seen. The ball went straight as an arrow into the side of the net to the goalkeeper's right. Had Hartley not intervened Giorgios may have been taking our penalties since then.

At the time I was annoyed. Hartley's intervention was unneccessary, and I felt that he was treating Robson as one of the 'in-crowd' to the exclusion of Samaras. It is more credit to Giorgios for rising above the clique mentality. His growing assertiveness was emphasised yesterday when he had to tussle with Aiden to take our second penalty.

There shouldnt be a debate about who takes our penalties. Should be the Holy Goalie every time.

Type in "Boruc scores penalty" into youtube and you'll see. Not a fan of his dancing mind you.

Sorry, but cant link at work.

I'm firmly in the anti-left-fitted-penalty-takers camp.

RELEGATION AND EURO-HEARTBREAK FOR THE MOTHERS AND SPUDS

SonofErin,

All I'm saying is, I'd rather face a left footed penalty taker than a right footed one. I think they're easier to read. As Collins, Pearce and Irwin proved, there are exceptions to my rule.

I seem to remember Maloney and Lynch arguing over a penalty years ago against Hearts (think we won 4-2). Maloney eventually wrestled it from Lynch and duly missed.

I'd be happy with Calderwood or Samaras taking the penos. The better the footballer the better the penalty. I remember wishing that Lambert would become our penalty taker as everyone he struck for Celtic was a belter, in the bottom corner and in the 'un-saveable' category. Plus, he was right footed.

TGITW - this evening

WG

Although I, for one, was not in favour of signing Samaras, thinking he was a sand-dancer who flattered to deceive, I am beginning to see that there is something about the guy.
I sincerely hope that, before long, he will have me eating humble pie - again!

It was really great to win so convincingly at Motherwell and Kilmarnock - grounds which have proved troublesome in the past!

On a different tack, I will be in Swinton, Manchester this weekend.
Any local gen on where to watch the game would be most welcome.

Hail! Hail!

I think we should start an award for the best dive, taking into consideration artistic merit, relevence to the games position, number of tumbles and just sheer bare-facedness.... I think naka has given us a good solid 4/5 in each department as a benchmark...

Its good to see a Celtic side winning well whilst clearly still having more to give. We look a much better unit with Crosas in the team, although he had a fairly quiet day yesterday, Maloney is proving that his time in the EPL was well spent, Aidhinio looks a shadow at the moment but the strength in depth in the attacking depts is begining to be obvious.

Im sure i'm not the only one who noted that the FOE scrapped to another lucky odd goal win at the hunnery, how on earth did we lose to that mob ? Although wednesday night was a complete disaster we clearly are miles ahead of the rest of Scottish football, yet I still think we are not what we were 3 or 4 years ago, better than we were a year ago, but there is still miles to go

Living in Canada I watch the games televised by Setanta at my club, am I correct in saying that the Killie fans were singing "why don't you go home" or was it my imagination?

The Left Winger (left footed perhaps?)

Wdowczyck missed against Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup. I've even saved a Mark Burchill peno. Collins wass the only one I'd trust. He was as acurate as can be, and as far as lefties go, he would be the only one I'd watch taking it without peeking through my fingers...

Who would you rather take your penos? Boyd or McNamara? That settles the argument then.

Roccobhoy, thanks. On the penalty kick scenario:

The world’s top snooker player practice clearing the seven colours from their spots hundreds of times each week, maybe even each day.

The world’s top golfers practice 2 yard puts hundreds of times each week.

This work is done well away from the cameras and pressure but it allows them to go into autopilot when the pressure comes and they have to make the pot.

Only in football do we hear some top professionals say use the excuse that pressure makes practice irrelevant. The very best at taking penalties practice every day.

Madra rua, go to the CQN home page, Canajunbhoy has linked to it in the Quick News section.

Morning all,

Despite Setanta putting the game yesterday on a tape delay of 1.5 hours (thanks a million, ya muppets) for their N American audiences, I enjoyed this match more than the Motherwell game. We proved that the bhoys were good enough to keep the high tempo for the full 90 minutes. I was quite surprised with the fitness levels of the Killie players, previously they would fall off after 70-75 minutes so fair play to them. The signs are that the 'lesser' SPL teams are upping their training and should give us some good football games this season.
Samaras is proving to be a fantastic buy, as is Senor Crossas. There is nothing more I can add to what everyone else has said about our on-form forward. He's a great attacking player who has also takes his defensive duties seriously. The midfield looked very steady and not overrun by opposition who deploy a 4-5-1 set up against us. Crossas, as everyone here has mentioned already, was very good pushing the team forward...a lot less crab-like passes, which kills any forward movement.
I was disappointed that Aiden didn't start yesterday but Shaun put in a great display...shame about his penalty though. I think that if anyone needs a confidence boost in our team it is AMcG. He is off form and on that basis deserves to be benched but we all know what he can provide to the team. Shaun, like Sammi, is on fire and both will be difficult to dislodge from the first team. Skippy and Aiden will need to step up and prove they are equal or better than the previous two and deserve to start games. Competition for places is a great motivator for all the players and hopefully this will show this season.

I have to be very careful how I word the next bit as it is a controversial point . With regards to UEFAs lack of action against Rangers I am now coming to the belief that they are, in fact, practising a form of reverse racism. If you look at who they are aiming their present campaign against racism you will see, quite rightly, any actions are against clubs/supporters who taunt coloured/black basically non-white players. I do not believe they take seriously any complaints of racism shown against white players. Have they ever taken action against teams/supporters for abusing nationalities rather than skin colour? This would explain their total lack of action against the huns disgusting behaviour. Anyone agree or disagree with this view?

Hail Hail

OLS...toatlly agree re left-footers..they shouldn't be allowed

SonsofErin, Pearce was an exception, but I fondly remember him missing one in a World-Cup semi-final shoot out:)
I also think Dennis Irwin took his penalties with his right foot?

Our record of missing European penalties is remarkable

At CP, we have scored one out of the last 6 in Europe - K Miller against Copenhagen.
Larsson has missed against Basle and Boavista, Thompson against Lyon, JVOH against Spartak and now Robson.
We may have got a penalty against Suduva (8-1) or some other non - nervewracking game (like Debrecen) but I can't be bothered checking.
On the other hand, the opposition in this period at CP (since 02/03) have only scored one out of 5 (Kaka) - Saha, Ronaldinho Anderlecht and Spartak have all missed.
Therefore only 2 out of the last 11 penalties at CP in European games were scored - an astonishing statistic.

Ok, read the article.

I 100 percent agree, I never ever fancy Left footed players taking penalties.

I would think that most goalkeepers are right handed and would find it easier to save penalties hit to their right. If you're right footed/handed you will jump with the power coming from your right. A right sided penalty taker will get more power hitting to his left which therefore suits the right handed keeper. I would therefore prefer a left footed penalty taker.
As the 2 out of 11 statistic shows, the keeper is more and more likely to save penalties. He is now generally 6 ft 5 or so and can move on his line and jump out without being penalised. I think the spot should be moved in at least a metre to the goal to compensate.

Hitting the target usually helps

01bhoy, cheers for that. I'm sure your a happy man now that 'your Sammi' is doing the business:)

Was at the game on sunday and have to say on the whole we were superb, can't agree with some of the things posted about Scott Brown though, I watched him closely throughout the match and he continually made misplaced passes, was easily shrugged off the ball, and over-ran the ball on more than 3 occassions. Then when he does lose the ball he goes all red faced and gives away a foul, Crosas was as classy a midfielder as i've seen in years and I think Robson would offer far more with him behind him than Brown will. Just my opinion mind before anyone has a fit!

On a crowd note I was unlucky enough to be seated (chadwick stand) beside, lets be honest, a total t*t on sunday who, upon the challenge of the wee tauoil of Killie, shouted 'ya wee bl*ck b...'. I was incandescent with rage and promptly told the wee drunk tool where to go and he should be ashamed to be in the celtic end. It honestly made my blood boil.

BTW stories abound in Donegal that McGeady has Spurs seriously sniffing around but the lad is waiting to see if WGS will be there after this season as he doesn't want to leave as he loves the club but feels he simply cannot work with WGS and even more so Garry Pendry

Samaras's penalty was not well taken. The keeper got a hand to it and was unlucky not to have saved it.
Caldwell had an excellent, as did Crossas.
Wilson at right back gave Naka the freedom to roam.
Good performance, great goal by Samaras.
I think he offers more then big Jan.
Lets hope we are at the start of something good.

Strach slaps ban on Setanta TV

by Alison McConnell

GORDON STRACHAN today blasted the critics who questioned Celtic's third goal at Kilmarnock yesterday - and praised Shunsuke Nakamura for keeping his discipline in the face of extreme provocation.

The Japanese international appeared to be hit on the back of the head by Killie defender Frazer Wright after winning Celtic's second penalty, which Georgios Samaras converted, and Strachan was bemused at the lack of coverage for the incident.

The Hoops boss was insistent that had the same action been carried out by a member of the Old Firm that it would have been headline news.

He said: "If you look in the rule book you'll see that if you pull someone by the jersey it's a penalty," said Strachan. " On TV you didn't really see it properly because the camera was at the wrong side, but if you see it from where the referee is you can see it right away

"What I am surprised about is that the TV didn't show too much was Nakamura getting a slap on the head from one of their players.

"If that had been a Celtic or a Rangers player it would have made the front page of some of the tabloids.

"But it has been swept under the carpet. I am proud of my players because to be provoked like that and not react is fantastic. In any walk of life, if you get a smack on the head from somebody then you'd have some-thing to say about it.

"Nakamura was pulled, he was pushed, he was shoved and then he was slapped on the head. And he walked away from that and showed that no matter what you do to him he was still the best player on the park.

"There was a small glimpse of it on TV, but I can assure you it would have been different had it been a Celtic or a Rangers player.

"Can you imagine if it had been Neil Lennon in his heyday if he slapped someone like that."

Such was his irritation at the coverage of the incident, heasked that a Setanta TV cameraman leave this afternoon's press conference ahead of tomorrow's cup tie against Livingston.

Pete the Beat;

Au contraire my friend. A right handed goalkeeper is more likely (comfortable) diving to his left given the want to protect his 'good side'. A left footer is more likely to go down the middle or across his body (al a Collins). Going across the body requires placement over power. Therefore a right handed goalkeeper facing a left footer will be diving to his favoured side against a weaker penalty. Thus making the goalie favourite.

I think Naka is the only left footer of our current squad whom I would trust with a peno. Purely because he could put the ball in any inch of the goal without much effort.

Has Naka ever taken a penalty for Celtic?

.

Question....

Was the ' Tickets Over-Priced = Empty Stadiums ' Banner from Celtic Supporters or Killie fans....

Why did wee Gordon have to mention "Celtic OR Rangers" ? It was a Celtic issue

Winning Gemmell see you at King Fud 18:25
UNEW

On the penalty debate, I was stunned when we beat Spartak last season as it has always been a given that Celtic lose penalty shoot-outs...certainly in my time anyway.

Time foggies the mind but does this sound right?

- Hibs away in the league cup around 1985
- Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup Final 1990
- Airdrie away in the league cup around 1992
- Raith Rovers (enough said)
- Valencia UEFA Cup 2001
- Falkirk in last season's CIS Cup

I also remember a farcical CIS tie against Partick in the Seville season when both teams conspired to fluff about 10 PKs between them (Lennon hitting possibly the worst PK I have ever seen) - it was pot luck we won.

Anyone else want to the hall of shame?

Didsburybhoy

The Rangers game is on BBC Scotland tomorrow.

Drink bedevils the memory, but didn't Motherwell beat us 13/12 on penalties in the late eighties/early nineties ??

On another Setanta note, Ian Crocker was quite specific in saying that Celtic had blamed Aiden McGeady for the defeat against the Darnell at Parkhead and that McGeady and Strachan have fallen out big time. This despite the denials by everyone connected with the Club who should challenge Setanta on this matter.

Crossas has the class, vision and two quick feet to play in the forward midfield role and will physically harden himself up if played regularly in the SPL.He must play in Europe where ball retention is more important than in the SPL. Scott Brown and the two full backs could learn a lot from him on the passing front!

Overall though a good performance yesterday as said already by most posters.

Wasn't able to get logged on Sunday but watched the game on C67. Does anyone else have difficulty getting signed in to CQN running Vista?

Good performance on Sunday although we should have won by more goals. Haven't read any comments yet but thought Samaras was again our best player supported well by JVOH especially in the first half. Scott Brown played further forward but for me he is playing well below expectations. His distribution was awful. Naka seems to be struggling and looks tired. I would rest him for a while and get Aiden back in. Aiden needed dropped but he will respond in the right way when he gets his chance again.

Caldwell had an excellent game again. He is by far our best performer this season. His sending off was a joke and we should appeal against that. I would like to see Caldwell and Loovens given a try out and Mick either dropped or moved to left back.

Crosas had a decent game but looks a little light weight for the SPL. Maybe WGS sees him as a key performer in our away games in the CL when we need to hold on to the ball better.

Rumour hitting the streets tonight!

McGeady to go to Spurs in January in a swap + cash deal for.....................Alan Hutton.

WGS has sufficient wide players in Mizuno, McCourt, Maloney and Caddis - he believes Mcgeady, for all his skill, doesn't create enough or score enough and has peaked already.

Celtic will also offload a number of fringe players to finance a left back deal.

Source accuracy = 55%

There's no chance McManus will play LB for Celtic again. It'll be centre back or nothing. He's off form just now and maybe should be rested for a few games and give Loovens-Caldwell a chance.

However, now that Caldwell's got himself suspended for at least a game, we'll see McManus and Loovens together.

I think if Crosas continues to perform the way he has in the last 2 games, he'll be undroppable. The team plays better with him in it, as does Scott Brown. Crosas is always available for the pass, and eliminates the need for McManus and Caldwell to play so many long balls.

Disgracefull if true fromMonTheHoops

MonTheHoops is following a story relating to a Fundraising event taking place this weekend, organised and attended by Celtic fans the event is supposed to be benefiting both the MacMillan Cancer Support Fund and the Tommy Burns Skin Cancer charity but we have heard that due to numerous emails from Rangers fans to MacMillan complaining and threatening a bhoycott of said charity, they have had to decline accepting any of the donated funds and have stressed now they would like all proceeds to go to the Tommy Burns Charity.

More to come on this story as soon as we get it, MacMillan has been contacted for a statement but as of now they have refused to comment.

If this is true then the Huns have a lot to answer for, any charity or charitable event should never be targeted or subjected to the sectarian bile that pollutes Scotland even in the 21st century. Sad day indeed.

For Celtic it's between that one and the third goal in the CIS final against Kilmarnock. That's the one where I ran from the half-way line and dragged the ball around the keeper with the sole of my boot. Both of them gave me a lot of pleasure because everything went right and because they were really important goals for Celtic. Hmmmmm Sounds Familiar....

Well done Gordon Strachan for sticking up for Naka and Celtic, WGS and the SSM are the only ones that speak up, I can understand why he mentioned the Huns in his statement for if he just mentioned Celtic the Laptop Loyal would only turn on him saying that it is Celtic playing the victim again because he mention the Huns along with Celtic he gets their attention and the LL don't see it as an attack on their Master Minty, at least he did not use the dreaded O** F*** word.

On Celtic penalty takers maybe Hinkel if he gets a game anytime is the one to take the penalties as he is German and everybody knows that they are the best penalty takers in the world. In the good old days it was always a defender that took penalties for their team, they would just walk up and smash it, none of this placing or passing the ball into the net, I seem to remember big Tam Gemmell smashing a few. Maybe it is time for the Ghod-like Caldwell to step up to the spot, wasn't he the first one to step up against Moscow and did he not smashed it.

That's an awfully precise statistic for rumour accuracy. Has he given you 11 rumours in the past and 6 were true? In calculating the accuracy, do you take into account that this rumour has eight components which must be true
1) Aiden to leave
2) Aiden to leave in January 2009
3) It will be a player plus cash deal
4) The buying club will be spurs
5) The additional player will be Hutton
6) WGS believes McGeady has stopped improving
7) He rates Mizuno and McCourt as adequate replacements (despite the evidence to the contrary)
8)We'll get a left back when fringe players go.

So with a 55% success rate, 4 of the above are likely to be true. If none is true, your mate's success rate will go down to 32%. If he's completely correct, he improves to 68% accuracy.

Stebhoy

The story has some legs, although not sure about the Hutton bit, knowing WGS he'd be more interested in Jimmy Greaves as long as he wasn't a left back. But the noises coming from the area McGeady's family comes from in Donegal are that he doesn't want to leave but may have to unless WGS goes at the end of the season which i tend to think he will (IMO). Spurs are the team mentioned so thats why I think there must be something in it if we've both heard the same thing.

Sincerely hope not as although Maloney offers the team some things he's not a patch on McGeady for getting by his man and getting the ball into the box, which with JVOH and Sammy playing is vital.

Can't help you there I'm afraid.

donegaldanny,

An in form McGeady would be my preference - I find it strange tho that after WGS giving him the stage, then signing a new deal - suddenly he doesn't like the manager.

My guess is this, McGeady is not responding to the challenge to fight for his place. Maloney comes in and links with the midfield and forward line and is also capable of beating his man.

Aiden has not performed and he now must show character and prove he is worthy of a jersey - we are about to learn a lot about him.

For me , I do wonder if Aiden has peaked and i'm curious if WGS thinks the same - This season Aiden should be pulling the strings and certainly scoring more goals - so far i haven't seen his "snatchy" shooting technique improve and i dont like a moany attitude from any player (watch youtube and you will see he never follows through with the boot)

winningsister -

no probs, our kid, trust you enjoyed the sweety references ??

WG x

donegaldanny and stebhoy

I hope that both of you are mistaken. I for one would be seriously peeved off if Aiden felt he needed to leave Celtic. Shaun is most definitely a valuable attacking asset and provides a different type of movement to Aiden but AMcG is on light years ahead of him on technical ability. It seems to be an open secret that Naka is for the off, probably as soon as January when the J League starts...if true, we will need Aiden more than ever.
If any of the reports are true I think WGS is playing with fire and would earn the wrath of the clubs support like never before.

Hail Hail

stebhoy

If the lad has peaked at 22 that would be incredible, but I think there is a lot of pressure on the lad to be our Ronaldo when other teams double up on him all the time. Perfect example yesterday when he came on he danced up the left with two guys on him, no Celtic player came to help within a 20-30 yard area they all stood and watched there is only so much he can do. Don't get me wrong i'm all for players getting benched when they aren't playing well but if WGS follows that idea why oh why are Brown and McManus playing all the time. It is a tough one especialy when Malonely is playing so well but away from home Naka rarely has the input he has at Celtic Park so maybe that would be the preference but with Naka rumoured to be heading home surely we can't afford to lose mcgeady??

Certainly hope not

DD

Aiden McGeady is a real talent but he has not been performing this season. Shaun Maloney is performing. If McGeady is serious about wanting to play for Celtic, he has to earn the right. If he thinks he has the clout to have our manager removed, I hope he is sadly mistaken. There can only be 1 person in charge at our club and that has to be our manager.

Itzallova, no probs. The initial name did not register with me and has now been disabled.

I thought during the falkirk game that Maloney and McGeady played great stuff, whenever aiden moved up the wing shaun was always in there giving him an easy out ball, I'm a wee bit disappointed we have not tried this again but not surprised. I really though this was going to be the making of aiden as the interplay between them was slick and I'd never seen aiden make so many sharp cutting passes in the one game.

There needs to be more of an end product.

Aiden will comeback all the more determined.

As always from the outside looking in,i think Mr Strachan is handling Aiden well.

Can one of you settle a disagreement I had with a fellow Celt on Saturday evening. When we lost 5-1 at Ibrox in 1988 We scored 1st from a Chris Morris free kick, that was my view of it but my mate was adamant it was McAvennie.

Thinking about the Villareal game, the only way we'll get something is in a high scoring game. Crossas must play - apart from his recent form , he will be familiar with the opposition style. Lazarus,

Your mate is correct. Macca did score the first in the 5-1 game in Aug 88. The game you are getting mixed up with is the game at Ipox at New year when they beat us 4-1. Chris Morris scored a free-kick in the first 5 mins down the copland road end.
If my memory serves me correctly Macca had to go off early in the 1-4 game due suffering a broken wrist.

HAIL! HAIL!

Lazarus

My memory tells me it was McAvennie and not a free kick, he scored in the first couple of minutes

Gordo was quite rught. I had almost forgotten about Naka being slapped. I thought McCurry was going to send the guy off until reality took a hold of me.

The headline on the on line version of the Daily Record about the penalty and the subsequent story is beyond belief (unless you know the Daily records agenda of course) they claim it denied Killie a 'lifeline'. They had been well and truly spanked. The denial of that penalty (and it WAS a penalty) would have changed nada.

Setanta are fast becoming a disgrace. They have gone too far in covering their Irish roots (remember when it was the channel for watching Gaelic Games in pubs in England, Scotland and Wales way before they hired Scott Booth and his pals?)

It might also be noted that two decent penalty shouts for Celtic had the sum total of 1 replay between them. Maloney being scythed down and denied a free kick warranted the most stupid comment from Booth 'There wasn't much in it' etc etc etc.

Best to watch with the sound down and mozart playing in the background. Much better for the blood Pressure.

can't see Hutton at Celtic...plus, why would we need another right back?

Let's not get ourselves too worked about this supposed rift, it happens all the time in football and if mcgeady is as much of a celtic fan as I'm told he is then he won't end his career with us over a wee fall out

Where I do have sympathy with him is he must think "if I'm dropped for maloney, why aren't mcmanus and brown dropped for loovens and robson?"

Last season I thought that Big Sammy's game was not suited to massed defences at CP but when the opposition are a goal down he makes good use of the space afforded when the likes of Killie change from 5-4-1 to a more attacking 4-5-1. The last few games he has shown an ability to take a pass with his back to goal and turn/shoot and also lay off to a celtic player and he is starting to look like a 1st choice striker - similar in many ways to PVH.

On the few occasions Crosas has played he seems composed on the ball and has a high ratio of completed passes normally to a celtic player who is not 2ft from opposition player and facing our goal. He takes a single touch and this keeps the momentum of the move going and this is something we have missed since Petrov left.

Given a bit of time and patience I think these two will become stalwarts of our team over the next couple of years - and we should worry about the Crosas / Barca buyback deal if / when it happens. To be honest if it does then that would mean he was a success here and thats gotta be a positive.

Setanta are a shower of f...fools. Their fawning fascination for the EPL is typical of the Irish media, though I am puzzled by their blatantly obvious blue slant in coverage of the SPL.
Not sure if it is relevant but they were set up by a rugby supporting group to broadcast Irish rugby games abroad before they moved into Gaelic Games. I and most other bhoys in my old CSC refused to hand over the $20 to watch any sport provided by them be it Gaelic Games or the Irish soccer internationals.
Setanta are, over here in the States, a necessary evil but the sooner Celtic make C67 available for public broadcast the sooner we can dump these idiots.
I read somewhere last month that they were in financial difficulties and were told in no uncertain terms "make a profit this year or else". Here's hoping.

Thanks for posting that; cheered me up no end. Watching the game yesterday, I was thoroughly satisfied with a great Celtic performance. As soon as Nakamura was fouled in the box, however, I turned to friends and said "Oh well, there's tomorrows headline".... as a joke. Latching on to Alan Coombes ridiculous statement, the tabloids and the rest got their excuse. I truly wish the incident had never happened; we were streets ahead of Kilmarnock yesterday, and a candidate for Goal of the Season is somehwo completely overshadowed by these imbeciles looking to bring us down at any opportunity.

The BBC brought it up at lunchtime, and after Craig Paterson went on and on and on about it, he had the cheek to say that these things should stop getting blown out of proportion...... aye, right Paterson, after you've just ranted on about it for a few minutes.... eejit.

By hey, playing football like we've done recently, there will no need to worry about this nonsense. Thank goodness.

Hail, Hail

good point on Naka , I hope he stays. He is worldclass IMO yet the scottish media do a good job of limiting his press to free-kicks. He has the touch of an angel and for me knits the team together.

If WGS is looking for a team to keep the ball , i think he needs a different role for Scott Brown - for me is is never a play maker - he is an all action box to box grafter who can break down attacks and drive us forward.

When supporters on here comment on the 4m player i get annoyed - we bought a player who has potential

Take note and think about this - WGS plays scott B in different positions. He also plays different role for Scotland and has played a diff role at hibs - this all adds to his development and experience and i believe this is WGS strategy for him.

We will see indicators of his greater potential this year and he will be in full flow next season - my prediction for the "youngster"

More importantly - look at celtics last few games - we have only looked in real trouble in two areas , 1) left back (more balanced now with Naylor) 2) Height in the box - we are dominated in the Air by every team we play!

We need to fix these in January

Lazarus, thought you were right there about Chris Morris. Listened to that game in the Scotsman Bar in Benidorm on the World Service back in the days before Live SKY matches. Celtic and Huns end in the pub that day, not a very pleasant night afterwards either !

I watched the game on Channel67 this afternoon and ran the Caldwells penalty over a few times, there's no way he should have been sent off,The ball definately hit a hand, who's I don't know ,there was a clash of heads and the hands were in the air, after four re-runs I still don't know who's hand it stuck,a debateable penalty but certainly no red card.
I enjoyed Gordons interview,That must have been one of his longest on Channel67,11.52mins,and if there was a cameraman asked to leave the room it wasn't shown.
Good interview by Mark Wilson also, sounds an intelligent boy ,and he can talk about football.

As for the game itself,Celtic played well within themselves,Crosas is an outstand prospect, once fit he'll be an ever present,Artur after the Re-arrangers game is coming back to his old selfconfident self,The defence looked very solid, although I've lost confidence in S McM,he played allright yesterday,But I keep expecting a mistake every game,I liked Samaras last season, but he's come on heaps since,If he keeps up his progress we'll be talking about him Ah La Henrik in years to come,Not in the same awe as Henrik, but we will be praising him for his ability to score the goals.

If it had been any other player in the team there would have been no debate in the rights or wrongs of whether someone should be rested,I'm talking about Aiden,Can it be doubted that Celtic are playing better at the present time with him on the bench,I agree 100% with Tiny Tim on his take of the situation,it's good Man Management on Gordons part,Aiden will come back a far stronger player,he really hasn't needed to fight for his place in the last season,a couple of games on the bench will make him want to fight harder for his game which can't be a bad thing for Celtic,or the team.

It is - confirmed on the Tickets section of the official club site.

Oldtim67, agree that competition is good for all areas of the team, although I would like to see it in all areas of the team.

I actually think Aiden and Shaun played very well together against Falkirk and if I needed to rest a midfield player it would not be Aiden or Shaun.

Thanks for your study on Gary Caldwell’s penalty. At first viewing I thought it was a stick on penalty and could not see why Gary was complaining.

As I understand things all the outstanding TimCards were sent out last week. I think you may have to take a trip to the Ticket Office pre-game.

Dublin Bhoy,

Thanks for posting the link. Which paper was that in? It is a great article.
Do you think the other verses were edited out because they are unsuitable for a family newspaper?

On the Eddie Smith thing at Ibrox, are we being our usual over sensitive selves when the Rangers fans are really thinking that Mr Smith obviously has pro Motherwell feelings since his brother in law and nephew (s) have been great servants to Motherwell? Surely they can't be suggesting that a ref could have an agenda against them for family or sectarian reasons. We all know that refs only make honest mistakes.

Before anyone thinks this confirms that I have lost my mind, I am pretty sure that it is the Celtic they are getting at!

Ulster-Celt,
take him but no more than £25K a week, do you think he would consider that ??

Hi Paul67 et al

Great article by Anna Smith in the Sunday Mirror. Thanks for posting. Has anyone in the media commented on it? Gordon Smith for example?..My the supremo has been a bit quiet lately hasn't he. I wonder why that is?

Moving on....

I heard the last call on Superscoreboard tonight ( I know...but I need something to shout at when I'm doing the washing up.) Anyway, a blawhard comes on saying that TFS is banter and "How dare the supporters of rangers football club be called racists by the Media." Absolutley priceless stuff....Bonkers Keevins then pipes up defending the Irish. Am I living in a parallel universe or have I been at the fairy liquid again....J Titor where are you?

onwards ever onwards...

Anyway, some really good stuff on show yesterday. Let's hope we keep it up. I don't get to the reserve matches so can anyone tell me how Koki is coming on?

And finally, can anyone tell me the odds of us getting through to the next stage of the CL. I just have a sneaky wee feeling that we might get there. Anyone else feel the same?

Does anyone fancy posting a second string Rangers team so we can compare each team's strength in depth.

Yes, it is a great article by Anna Smith. We are, and rightly so, quick to condemn the media for their sniveling compliance by refusing to report the overt racism of the manky mob. When one, like Mr Speirs, dares to raise his/her head above the parapet we should acknowledge their efforts. Anna Smith not only raises her head in her article, she positively shouts and screams "cowards" at her colleagues, politicians and more importantly at RFC. Well done Anna, you give us hope that one day this blight will be removed from not only Rangers support but from decent Scottish society.
garygillespieshamstring:
The article is from the Sunday Mirror (Scottish edition).

All, I would strongly suggest that you read the article. It is a breath of fresh air from the normal putrid rubbish written by Murrays poodles.

Hail Hail

Lennybhoy....youve got mail

Hail, hail

Anna Smith, former chief reporter at the Daily Record, was never in any danger of being one of Murray’s poodles.

Sadly, Scottish Sunday Mirror has a pitifully small circulation.

STANDING UP

Paul,
Totally agree on big GG, I didn't understand why quite a few fans were underwhelmed by his permanent signing. When his touch is on, he is unstoppable. Even when his touch is not quite there, he puts in a shift.

Gary Caldwell, playing really well, cut out the high profile howlers and we have a top player.

Artur looks like he has re found his mojo. Looks on the way back to his strutting, arrogant, best.

I thought earlier in the season Aiden was showing signs of burn out, that should be explained to him. Though, why certain posters seem to find glee in his absence, only they can really answer. GS needs to try and avoid friction between Shaun and Aiden. Aiden ypoty and poty, then out of the team for someone who has not shown the same loyalty. I think that would be slightly galling. Shaun looks fresher than Aiden at the moment, but I would hope we try and accomodate both of them in the near future.

Lastly, thank god for Graham Speirs (and now Anna Smith) it is good to see someone in the media whose views actually reflect the reality. The constant counter balancing (STV are a disgrace, without mentioning the usual suspects in the print meeja), which is blatanly dis proportionate, does sometimes leave you bewildered.

Is it just a coincidence that it takes a female journo to come out in print and say what everyone else knows regards TFS and the other bigoted stuff that they spout. Might be stating the obvious but perhaps she has bigger kahunas than most of the male lapdogs.

Dharma Bam @ 9.05

Centre forward in his 80s / 90s converted to a centre half. Sounds like a possible Rearrangers signing to me. Christian Dailly might feel threatened by this one!

Sammi's goals

Apologies if this has been asked before but is tomorrow nights match on the season ticket?

Playfusbal4dguilders

RRC that article from goal.com is lazy journalism at its worst how can anyone possibly justify the following statement
"Strachan is loathe to rely on maverick Samaras and big Jan's start to the season has been patchy..."
the only way crespo is likely to be anywhere near celtic is on a trial or pay as you play deal which would be completely unacceptable to his ego.....when we have struggled to remove balde and gravesen from the wage bill there is no justification to sign crespo on his inflated inter-milan salary

as for tomorrow i would hope to see donati get a run out to see if he would present a viable back up for CL exertions away to villareal....certainly if massimo wants to replicate his CL form of last season it would be an excellent opportunity to try and force his way into the managers plans especially as he is yet to start this season....if massimo does not get any game time I would seriously question his role at CP this season....

Management in London don't really give a monkey’s about how the Scottish Mirror (Sunday and Daily) do in Scotland.

They're not trying to sook in with us. They probably don't even know what Anna wrote, which may go some way to explaining why it appeared. ie There are no Scottish-based executive huns to say: “Ye cannae write that Anna, away hame like a good wee Catholic lassie.”

Interestingly, Anna has been writing novels the past couple of years. Not really my bag, kinda Angela's ashes in Coatbridge thing, so if anybody want’s to offer her support check out her website, which I can't remember the address of, but I think you can contact her through that. It's www.annasmith.com or something like that. Google it, whatever.

Unfortunately, I can't help with the name of the Italian striker.

To illustrate the crap jokes, I went to the pictures with Mrs H last week in the big tall cinema in the town. Going up on the escalator, I noticed they were made by Schindler. I couldn't help but wonder aloud if they also made the lifts, and if so, was the company called Schindler's Lifts.
Needless to say she was not amused!

It seems pretty clear that there is a concerted attempt by those who are not our friends to destabilise the good ship Celtica picking away at the those little festering sores that they regularly ignore or sweep under the carpet when other clubs are involved. Its so sad however that its often our own who regularly provide them with the ammunition. The latest manifestation is of course the tiresome agenda re Aiden Mc Geady.

I cringed yesterday to hear the response of Ian Crocker to supporters chants which was quickly seized upon as support for A Mc G against Gordon Strachan. Sadly he speaks some truth as I'm fairly certain that there are those amongst our support who would be glad of the opportunity to attack Gordon under the guise of support for the golden bhoy. Well let me make my position quite clear. Aiden Mc Geady is not performing. Aiden does not deserve a starting berth on current form. Only Aiden by improved performance can change that. He has a long way to go yet to be as effective as a player as either Shaun or Naka and I would hate to think that misguided support from our fans will detract from Aiden accepting the need for him to knuckle down and develop further. Currently he has regressed. He needs to re-focus. Appreciation of his own ability is not something Aiden is short of. Voluble appreciation of his ability by others as a GIRUY to Gordon Strachan will do no-one least of all Celic any favours. At all times the manager must be seen to manage.

I was upset when Shaun left. I don't know if I would be as distressed about Aiden. I do wonder if his support would be as firm if he was playing in the dark blue and not the green of Ireland.

Leabrannagh, aye, Giorgios has everything going for him.

Antsman, no comment on the central midfield pairing. My view:

Yet another new pairing, although due to injury.

Another slow start, the penalty was the first chance created.

We then picked up the pace and won well, but I don’t think central midfield was the most important aspect of this. More evidence is needed before an assessment can be made.

Dublinbhoy,
Off topic(again...) but

I agree with you about that book. I would bin 'Tis as life is really too short. I only lasted about fifty pages so perhaps I'm being unfair to the author.

I am on a wee bit of a Graham Greene kick just now and although you have probably read it I would recommend The Heart of The Matter to anyone. Superb stuff.

Evening all,

Nice to see some goals back in the side Paul. Three (going on six) at Kilmarnock and four away to Motherwell the previous week.

A good return from a couple of tricky away league fixtures.

The story so far -

St Mirren(h) 1
Dundee United(a) 1
Falkirk(h) 3
rangers(h) 2
Motherwell(a) 4
Aalborg(h) 0
Kilmarnock(a) 3

Seven games, 14 goals scored.

I've never been one to get excited over clean sheets or defensive formations.

It's the goals that do it for me CSC,

Paul67:

"Another tremendous signing". Yes!!!!

For a big laddie Samaras has a great touch.
When a lot of other footballers would have fallen over the ball he scored a neat goal at Fir Park.

I can think back as far as Big Yogi who could beat a man, sometimes two or three men, but you were never sure (I don't think Yogi was either) where the ball was going to end up.

For me Sammy looks the part now that he is getting a sustained run in the team.

BBJ mentioned yesterday that Crosas may be the 'Jewel' in the crown.
Maybe Sammy could turn out to be a bit of a diamond as well.

Hail Hail.

Theres a lot of comments going around regarding the fitness of our top scorer from last season,Skippy.

Its worth pointing out that currently he is working harder than ever to sort this issue(hence recent groin strain) and is indeed lighter than he was last season. An issue that can be misleading is that the upper body work he has been doing after training sessions has indeed led to an apparent bulkier frame.

A couple of goals and a return to last seasons form will no doubt answer his critics and benifit everyone......

Dalgetybhoy
Thanks...indeed you are.

I agree completely with your views re the current Mcgeady 'controversy'.

For me it is simple, the player has regressed since the promise he showed last last autumn.

At that time he had gained a yard of pace, and a bit of physique. He was more direct, and seemed to be working hard at his shooting with either foot. In short he seemed to be maturing, and working on ways of building on his undoubted natural ability.

Sadly, whether through the nocturnal habits of young males with disposable income, or through lack of focus, or hunger, he appears to have actually lost any pace and directness, which he seemed to have gained.

Unlike yourself though I do believe that the management team at Celtic could have helped him through this period with some focus, and mentoring in a manner similar to that employed at Man U with both Beckham and Ronaldo.

That having been said, the 'blind support' which came from our the Celtic fans on Sunday only fires the media with their Strachan v Aiden agenda. Sadly some Celtic 'fans' will never get it.....or maybe they too have another agenda which you alude to, which is nothing to do with football.

For me it is simple, player not performing, so leave him out until he improves, or better still sell him for a few million while he has the value.

Hi Guys
Good result and decent performance yesterday. Big Sammi is just getting better and better. I would like to see his decision making improve a little as I think he tends towards being greedy sometimes but this can be rectified Skippy is a bit that way too.
I have no complaints about Aiden being benched but our captain's performances certainly deserve to see him dropped although he was ok yesterday. I would like to see us play with a decent back four, a midfield three of McGeady, Crosas and Cadis and a front three of Maloney Hutchenson and Sammi but I am not the manager and I think the last 4 weeks have seen the best spell of football played by one of his teams.

Hail Hail

How does the idea of giving the reserves a runout tomorrow night square with the reserve game vs the rears tomorrow?

Can we have the CIS Cup extended? No?

I've been my holidays, this being the Gold Cup Weekend in KKK land (or Ayrshire as Ed calls it).

I was catching up on the cqn threads tonight on my return and, shame on me, had a wee swatch over on FF too.

Well done both Graeme Spiers and Anna Smith ( and Roddy Forsyth from Thursday's Telegraph too!).

All writers with a brain, each. You can tell the difference from the usual press gang just byu looking. The lack of drool is a dead giveaway, as is the disinclination to listen to banjo music.

Suffice it to say, they're all three getting a kicking over by.

The stir being caused by their horrible wee latest 'hit' is still rumbling on , I see. The posters refer to a lusty rendition of it at the Motherwell game, loudly and longly.

The line seems to be that it isn't racist.

Bain's craven attempt to curry favour with the hard liners, whils still asking for them not to sing it, seems to have been followed up with a pre game leaflet distributed to the home support as they arrived at the game ( and enough of the 'why bother, they can't read slogans of more than three letters, ususally beginning with f,b or u' jokes).

Seems to have been a re hash of the official line from last week, please don't sing it , you might get arrested etc.

I thought that, for the purposes of clarification, I'd post what I think is the correct legal definition of 'racist' in this context, so that everyone is clear.

The relevant law is , up here, contained in section 50 A of the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995.

I'll not post it all, it's late and I'm tired, but the IMPORTANT bit relates to the myth the FF brigade are trying to peddle that it's not racist to abuse someone unless they're another colour.

Here's what the law actually says, after saying that it's ilegal to abuse someone for belonging to another racial group:

“racial group” means a group of persons defined by reference to race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origins.

So that's that.

It IS racist.

I'll lay bets that not many of them would be voting Obama neither mind you.

Night all, my bill's in the post.

Hi all hope your weekends were good.

Disagree with Oldtim et al. about the Kilmarnock penalty. It seemed very clear to me that the ball hit Caldwell's hand, even if it wasn't intentional. The ref got it right. Caldwell's hand stopped the ball going towards the goal, when it was about 1 yard out. If it had been at the other end, we would have been howling for it and raging if it was denied. Once the ref gave the penalty, the red card was inevitable. Sympathy for GC because he threw himself in, to prevent a free header to Sammon (I think).

The ref gave us two penalties which were correct, and gave them one which was correct. The most disappointing thing for me was the commentary from the two muppets on Ch 67. They berated the referee throughout the whole game. One of them actually said "Well we got one penalty from McCurry, and that's the only one we're going to get, that's for certain" This was said in the first half when a possible penalty incident came up. They criticized everything he did, and even managed to make reference to his off-field activities as part of their general "Let's really slag him off" routine. As it happens the referee yesterday had a decent game, no matter who he was.

Once again we have the clubs striving to educate the fans about the correct way to support the team, while back on Ch 67 Paul Cuddihy and (I think) Tony Hamilton engage in the most puerile and infantile not to mention embarrassing comments about the official. They have a responsibility to the club and to reason and sanity. In a week when we are all being second guessed for anything we do and say, it was a huge disappointment to hear their bitter gibberish. What an example to set.

Paul, does anyone at the club ever actually hear what passes for commentary on this channel? For some of us it's the only way to see the games, and we pay handsomely for it too. Volume down next week.

The team deserved to win by a bigger margin. Scott Brown was an effective tiger in midfield, but he was consistently awful in passing. Overhit, underhit, mistimed early, mistimed late. At one point he gave a 5 yd pass to Crosas when they were facing one another, yet Crosas had a Kilmarnock player right on his back. He was promptly dispossessed and we were on the back foot. Crosas looked great though, and when fully fit will be a real gem.

Dont remember much praise from you Derbyshire when Aiden was our and the leagues best player. I think your last point gives the game away, if he played for the dark blue, he would get more support from you. You never miss an opportunity to stick the boot in. Fans have chanted sub players names for years, I think Gordon Strachan can cope with that and doesn't give a hoot what the papers write.

I think Aiden needed a rest, as long as that is explained properly, I dont have an issue. I would have an issue if one of our biggest transfer money making assets was being pushed out the door as we had conveniently signed a ready made replacement. I dont think that is the case, but will be watching closely for any huttonesque manoeuvres.

There is still work to do, of course, sterner tests lie ahead, but this might just be the season Celtic morph into an attractive team to watch.

Paul67
Celtic have always been an attractive team to watch.
And a winning Celtic team is not just attractive but incredibly handsome,
....in a very masculine way of course.

Anytime the hoops take the field, the heart beats faster, songs of praise, love, admiration and historic noble deeds are offered aloft, expectations are arisen and all rational thoughts are put aside to cheer our indefatigible heroes in green and white, .....or yellow, .....or all green or green and black stripes, or even if they wore a dirty white semmit.
Like WG's infatuation with Boynita, all external considerations are cast aside to pursue our hopes and dreams.
Even the myriad of disappointments fail to quench our ardour, and in fact only serve to strengthen the bonds that bind us, and make the team even more irresistible.

So please no patronising throw away lines about the love of all our lives. Even when we're old and grey.

In total agreement with your response to derbyshire boy on Aiden saga. The next transfer window will be enlightening.

Why disparage our support with innuendo.
I,m Scottish with Irish ancestory but don,t support either,s national side , I fully understand an support Aiden,s choice to play for Ireland,
My support for Aiden is because i simply believe that he is along with Naka the best outfielder Celtic have,This young man is an outstanding talent,
This was the reason his name was chanted by Celtic fans,

I don’t know whether Shunsuke Nakamura will still be playing in the hoops after the New Year, but I sincerely hope he is. One of the things that I most admire about him, besides his obvious sublime skills, is his dedication to his profession. For me his attitude and deportment are up there with the King of Kings’. His humility and obvious joy at being a Celtic player is an inspiration to all would be Celtic players.

For all these reasons I would exhaust every argument, bend every rule, and just short of chaining him to the goal posts, I’d do everything in my power to keep him a Celtic Player.

Maybe one option would be to have him remain a Celtic player on a rota system. A very common system is the (FIFO) Fly in, Fly out; four on two off. If his family were prepared to holiday in Scotland a couple of times a year, and Shunsuke was prepared to do the commute, then we’d have the joy of having him in our team for a little while longer at least. With the squad that we now enjoy I’m sure we could scrape through the two weeks he was at home. Nobody after all doubts his commitment to his fitness.

Come on Naka – you know you want to.

I like what I read by Graham Spiers. Most of the time anyway, but I never forget what football team he openly supports.

On a couple of occasions, I have written him at his newspaper, over a year ago, concerning his silence about the desecration of Jock Stein’s memory. I never got a reply. However, eventually Mr. Spiers did get around to condemning the moronic and vile chants regarding this subject.

Conversely, his almost instant condemnation of Celtic supporters for giving out to Rev. McCurry has once again got me wondering how sincere a crusader he really is.

GG seems to have got his groove back.

PJ who is in a cab in times square after watching Toots & the maytails.... And will impart toots words of wisdom when he gets home....after a Shaun Maloney in the local of course.

fan-a-tic and Leabrannagh

Nice responses to a negative post. I am sure Derbyshirebhoy will say my support for Aiden is because he plays for Ireland. Just to preempt him, I do not watch or care about internationals. To me they are pointless and detract from the main business of club football.
My immediate thoughts were the same as Leabrannaghs...Hutton. Are some Celtic supporters really that quick to dump a true Celtic fan who is living all our dreams, who grew up with Celtic, changed from boy to man with Celtic, moving through the ranks to be one of the best players ever to come out of Scotland...and still only 22? Incredible.
Maybe we just don't deserve AMcG and he would be best served to get away from Celtic...at least he would be appreciated by his adopted support.
I do not look at AMcG in terms of his monetary value but rather his value to the team and that is almost unquantifiable. Cast your mind back to November/December. McGeady carried the team or have you conveniently forgotten that? Or do you have the simplistic attitude of "what has he done for me today" forgetting what may have done for you yesterday?
No player should be guaranteed a place and, as I have said before, Shaun Maloney is on form so deserves his place. This is the same player who turned his back on WGS and Tommy Burns and followed the money. Like you, I was peeved off when he left but was delighted to see him back but his loyalty and maturity are questionable. The same can never be said about AMcG (read what Alex Fergusson said about him last week). Aiden does need to get back to his best but I have no doubt he will return better than before.
Burnley78 you talk about blind support for Aiden. Ever thought the support may actually see Aidens qualities and appreciate them? I wonder about the agenda that you and Derbyshirebhoy talk about...is it possible that you both have your own axes to grind?

Agreed about the CIS cup, but because of the derby game maybe the first team bench players should play. It would give them something to get their teeth in to.
Anyone know if C67 will be showing the Reserves match? I would love to see the game.

mate I never thought for one minute, that with a guy like Naka, that money would be his motivation. No I just want him to stay and if he is emotionally tough enough to handle a rotad work structure, i.e. 4 and 2,that would allow him to continue his career and still enjoy a degree of domestic normality, then I would personally be happy to accomodate that.

I hope both parties come to the table with a flexible attitude. If not... he is gone.

A (True) Financial Parable for Kojo...

Niebla is a tiny Chilean fishing village on a cliff at the mouth of an estuary, four hundred miles south of Santiago. To a newcomer, Niebla is picturesque and charming. The harbor isfilled with brightly colored fishing boats, and there is a seventeenth-century Spanish fortress with stone towers and brass cannons. The women of the village sell strings of shrimp and braided garlic under the palm trees near the beach. There are few cars-a favorite form of local transportation is still the ox cart.

But Niebla's most interesting feature lies two miles upstream along the river to Valdivia - a rusty old steamship, high and dry in the middle ofa town plaza. The ship's unusual position dates back to May 22, 1960, when two earthquakes-9.5 on the Richter scale, the strongest ever recorded-suddenly struck Chile back-to-back early that Sunday morning. The quakes originated one hundred miles off shore, 180 feet below the oceanfloor. By noon the resulting tsunami had caused the Pac$c Ocean to recede from the shore, much faster and farther than the usual tides.

Word of this event spread quickly, and the people ofthe village gathered along the shore to stare out in amazement at the retracting sea. The sea withdrew so quickly that it left little pools of water on the seabed, filled with stranded fish. To the hardworking villagers this was a dream come true-they marched out eagerly to scoop them up into baskets. Women and children, the mayor, and the parish priest all joined in. They ofered a prayer of thanks to God for their good fortune.

Most people ignored the firstfaint rumble. A few thought they heard something and stared out at the ocean. All they could see was a thin dark edge on the horizon. Probably a storm. They turned back to work, wandering up to several hundred yards out from shore to fill their baskets.

Then the wind died down and the rumble grew louder. All of a sudden there was a shock of recognition, like the handshake o f a corpse. People cried out, dropped their baskets, and scrambled back toward shore. But for hundreds it was too late. A few minutes later a black wall of water 60 feet high, traveling 200 miles an hour, cascaded over the beach and the village. The grounded ship became a kind of memorial to their collective dream and awakening.

The Georgious Samaras Story.... PART1967....

Strachan heaped praise on Samaras but revealed he isn't his No.1 striker - because he doesn't have one. He said: "There are no No.1s. I don't have one anywhere. I keep saying I have an image of how the game should be played. I don't have faces.

"Georgios had a good chance in the first half after a magnificent early ball from Naka. He tried to put it through the keeper's legs and it didn't come off.

"But his run for the second goal - against a really good defender who is no mug - was terrific.

"He's just a young man. People don't think that because he is a big lad and they forget that. He's the same age as Aiden McGeady and three years younger than Shaun Maloney."

"I thought the front two did well. It was good to have the focal point with Jan and Sammy did his work around him. That was good and they did great."

Samaras and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink apart Celtic performed across the pitch and Strachan added: "I thought we had a terrific start and got right into the game.

As Our Poet Laureate Say's To Be Continued....

o1afanofsambhoy

General comment. Don't make too much out of the rotation policy. Aiden is with Celtic for the long term. He will get another chance to shine soon and will take it. All of the players know that there are capable replacements on the bench. With Crosas having an immediate impact the midfield will be the strongest competitive area . Changed days from when Momo was our best player on the bench. Missed the Killie game was on too late for me but wish I hadn't sounds like the entertainment has been added to the winning mentality. It is so good to be able to see consistent praise for GC. He should have enough slack now to keep on developing. Scott Brown and Big Mick need the same space and the result will be as good. I have said for a long time that I think we have a young squad destined for greatness. A few others were also not overly upset when we didn't sign too many more players. Every new player signed means someones favourite player needs dropped or booted. I don't think we bought this squad to dump them but to build them up and it takes more than one year or one game as some would give our players . Have patience . The dressing room is strong and these players will get better together. Fourinaroweasyyouknow.

The Sydney CSC watch the games in Cheers Bar in George Street which will be open early in the morning to show the game if it is on. You have to wait till nearer the time and check whether SBS or ESPN are covering the game. If not then you and all us are snookered. You dont even get CL games on Channel67.

To be honest I think one of the channels will cover both games as they usually go for games involving English clubs.

Taurangabhoy,

I would agree with your hopes for Brown. I think he is a player. I would like to think the same of McManus. But, I don't think he ever shown the ability that Caldwell has.

Those people chanting for Aiden McGeady now, would they be the same who were giving him such a hard time a year or so ago? The same crew who booed Caldwell and Sno?

I hope our supporters get to the stage where we let our manager pick the team.

o1bhoy,

Thanks for the kind offer and the info. Not planning to be in Melbourne this time around but you never know. Was over Christmas before last for the Cricket. o1bhoy nipped out to watch the oldest ghirl play indoor netball. Spot on observation mate, how true. The more things change the less they change or summit like that. Why I keep the faith . WGS has a lot on his side of the scales ...good buys like THG , Naka , GC and now Sammie starting to outweigh the TG,Virgo buys, bringing through some of our own like Aiden and Shaun and Big Mick who I think will come good (If WGS was as bad as he is painted would Shaun have wanted to come back?) and a few others with more than a sprinking of potential like Crosas , Scott Brown and hey McDonald and JVOH are no duds. Its coming together . Sad thing is one draw and the gnashing of teeth will be back. Good thing WGS will still pick the team.

Hope your legal stuff comes through 01 then you can get home. When I was in Sydney we picked up one of the lads straight from the airport early Sunday morning and ended up in the Irish club at Central 1 am after a long day. Last pub open on a Sunday. Our mate was rubber and fell over a very low bannister five stories down onto a concrete floor. We thought he was gone for sure but he was so relaxed he bounced and had serious but not life threatening injuries. No safety nets or any safegaurds. He spent a lot of time through the Aussie legal system to get compensated. Stick at it.

Parkheadcomesalford it is good to see signs of Scott becoming the player we knew we had bought. ok Big Mick hasn't got the ball skils of GC but he can become more and more solid for us and in my opinion nothing wrong with a rock right in the middle. Last year GC and Mick led a defence that had the best record in the SPL fact. They were both also dead cert starters for the Scotland jerseys . No competition. That kind of partnership would be the envy of many a Manager. I would like to see it continue. Loovens will have a shot now the GC has been carded. Lets see what he can do.

I find it incredible and I'm getting increasingly angry that NOT ONE VOICE has been heard from the football authorities in this country (From any of the two main bodies)regarding that obscene famine song from supporters of Rangers Football Club. It beggars belief that, after the soundbites from the SFA last season, they are so blatantly ignoring this RACIST song. Apparently it was in full cry on Sunday too while the club in question was celebrating it's 'Ulster day'. This is a song now being mentioned almost daily on phone ins and in newspaper columns (of the uncowardly type).

Do you have any insight whatsoever as to whether or not any pressure is being brought to bear on either the SFA or SPL to publicly decry this foul chant and if they intend to act at all ?

Hi Bhoys

Can anyone tell me definitively whether the Hearts game at tynecastle on the weekend of 01/02 November is going ahead on the sat / Sun normally I would assume it to be on the Saturday at 12.30 ( reason being we are playing Man Utd the following Wednesday at Parkhead in the Champs League ) however I heard it was going ahead on the Sunday.

Can anyone shed some light?
