Celtic rampant against Livi Lions

| | Comments (557)
We got a really enjoyable performance from Celtic last night.

Glenn Loovens not only got the all-important opening goal, but he got an assist by hooking the ball across goal to Gallus Georgios for the second.  The defence had little defending to do all evening so all I can report for our new Dutchman is his composure in the opposition box.

Aiden McGeady rediscovered the electric pace that exploded onto the scene last season.  On one occasion he carried the ball and three defenders from the halfway line into the Livingston box before shooting against the post.

Just as they did against Falkirk, McGeady and Shaun Maloney were mutually aware; well worth playing together, Gordon.

I felt for Scott McDonald.  He had three good chances, a header, a dig from just inside the box and a snapshot, all past the post.  There was another which darted across goal but whether it's confidence or the vagaries of fortune, he is stuck on one goal for the season.

Georgios was an absolute treat again.  His running style and pace is very reminiscent of Didier Agathe, although he has much better traction control which allows him to be productive when he needs to address the ball.

He is also able to throw his not-inconsiderable stature into challenges, which last night allowed him to start as second favourite for a challenge and emerge with the ball.

Many more goals could have followed.  After benefiting from a Samaras pass to score, Scott Brown returned the compliment but the ball was cleared from the line.  Paul Hartley hit the bar with a free kick and Brown had to ask Livingston goalkeeper McKenzie how he managed to stop a late header, to which the keeper could only shrug his shoulders.

Credit also to the fans who congregated in the Green Brigade area of the Lisbon Lions Lower, who sang good-natured football songs without a pause for 90 minutes, they lifted the atmosphere enormously.

maybe see you on Saturday...Hopefully...

so are we going to revert back to o'neills famous 253 formation (the seville friendly wasnt it.... i remember varga giving him the "you nuts?" look)

Belfastbhoy,

There is no reason for us to play 4 defenders, at home, against SPL sides (or below). I feel it hinders us when we do. You have three players stood about, unsure of what they are meant to be doing.

We should have the ability to man mark the one, or occasionally two, forward players deployed against us. Our opponents then have to decide what to do about us.

Therags...

morning all
quite happy with the result but am not so happy that i did not see the game .
paul do you know of any reason why this game was not shown live apart from trying to bump up the gate . and i was wondering could it not have been shown on our own tv channel celtic tv .

heres to 4 and more

01bhoy.
Posted on last thread, didn't realise Paul was up to posting a new thread this early in the morning.

I know you bet Sammy to be top scorer at the end of the season, and barring injury your on to a good thing,And I seriously hope you get your bet up.
Yes I did notice your "Value Bet"again very hard luck, but surely it would only be Value if it comes up.
Sorry I'm being a bit pedantic there.
I'll certainly have a glass or three with you on your sojourn back to the old country, looking forward to it,pity you couldn't make it at the same time as Kit.

Missed the game last night due to work commitments in London where i picked up 'Deer Hunting with Jesus' by Joe Bageant.
This is a marvelous expose of dumb ass, bigoted, racist USA redneck culture. The similarities with our FOD friends are obvious.

Buy the book ghuys you wont be disappointed - makes Michael Moore seem tame.

Blantyretim.

I'll be in BBs before the game on Saturday, all going well.

Wicklowbhoy

How can you complain after last nights result? :)

P.S. I listened to BBC Radio Scotland, (via internet) the commentary was switching between the hoops game and the rest of the c i s games last night.

Hail Hail Roccobhoy

Onwards to our 2nd domestic treble this decade.

should make it as no children going to game this week ...(holidays and parties more important)

What a wonderful viewfaethewindae this morning....life is so much better when the Celts win 4-0, bring on the Dons!

Therags –

I don’t know if you noticed on Sunday, but Mark Wilson more or less played the entire right wing on his own, acting as a flying wing-back and allowing Naka to move inside for the majority of the game. Obviously the quality of the opposition played a part and Caldwell did some covering, but you can’t over-emphasize the value of a player who can so effectively cover two positions.

Hi Bhoys

I meant to say it in my previous post, Is the goals from last nights game being shown on Celtic tv this evening?

roccobhoy

thought you where a wee bit off form last night. don't hold out much hope for your Celtic career but good luck wherever you end up.
from a fellow Blantyre man.... :)

the goals will be on the huddle show at 7.00

Took the opportunity to ship the entire Family to last nights game, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The kids especially enjoyed the fantastic singing of the Green Brigade. How cool was that? Another couple of thousand entrants and we might see the return of the Jungle there. They were absolute class; well done to them.
On a sour not, what about Donati? Being of Italian desent, I want him to be good but honest to goodness, he is just shocking.Every pass he makes is behind the player ( if he finds him at all) and so he ends up making the guy back-track to collect the ball and slows the entire world down. Very frustrating, very poor.Damn Italians...
But overall a great night for the Family, and with my 50% off voucher thanks to Martins Money Tips in Pizza Hut at Silverburn, does it get any better for a man of 16 stone?

Hail Hail.

THE QUADRUPLE IS ON!!

10 goals in 3 matches!

This is like watching Dr Jo's team in action. Ah, the halcyon days of 5-1, 5-0, 4-0 every game.

Bring it on!!!

Wicklowbhoy - celtic tv don't have the rights to show live celtic games. The bbc has the rights to show cis cup games and they are showing the rangers game tonight.

01bhoy.

His plan was to come over for the last Rearrangers game but work commitments prevented him from doing so,it's still on but I don't know when it will be,we usually keep in touch by e-mail but I've been a bit neglectful recently.
The last contact I had with him,he said he wanted to see our boat, and it had the audacity to sink for a day,it must have took fright at the thought of a visit from Kitalba,my brother received a call that the boat had sunk, and he went on a Joe ninety mission to rescue the boat.
As I was under the weather he went on the rescue mission himself, and managed to re-float the old lady,"more of a spinster than an old lady now" 84 years old now.
She's classed as a historic vessel, and with her two historic owners, wer'e a right threesome.

The boats sixty foot long and took 8hrs to pump her dry,I just wish I had been well enough to have given a hand,my brothers 75yr old and not able to do that kind of work.

I was going to re-arrange to get back and have a shot at Paul67's five-a-side. However, was very belatedly and sheepishly informed just recently that the in-laws are coming out for a holiday, arriving the 1st of November. So quick change of plans and with luck I'll be leaving here on the 2nd or 3rd of November.

Will have to check the fixture list before I can confirm.

But I will catch you for a beer and I suppose the sail round the bay is now out of the question!!

So glad I made the effort to get to the game last night !

Good football from Celtic, and praise to Livi for not resorting to the horrible stuff we see from the '10 men behind the ball merchants' in the SPL every week.

Good also to see a right sided player play in right mid for a bit of a change.

Samras is 3 years younger than Maloney ? Can this really be true ? if so then he might just be the 'buy of the century !'

Finally give me 25,000 who want to be there, vs our usual 50,000 moaning 'expert' consumers anytime. Those guys in the North East corner were fantastic ! Real 'supporters' at Celtic Park again at last ! The kids with us wanted to go and join in the 'party' with these guys.

Happy days !

kitalba your in laws arrive on the first and you take off the next day. How do you manage it ? You must have a very understanding boss. I know what I would get for trying something like that on. Nothing. : )

Once again we have turned in another good display. Aalborg the only blip recently, which I personally put down to bad fortune and some silly decision making from players rather than us playing poorly.

I said at the time even though it was painful, the Rangers game has been the reality check a few in our squad have needed, and boy have they responded!

Morning Bhoys!

I know the opposition wasn't the best but there seems to have been a lot of plus points from last night's game.

To mention a few - more goals from Sammy, Aiden's form returning (he has too much ability to be off form for long periods), goals from Scott Brown and Loovens plus the singing from the Green Brigade.

Bring on the Dons.

Hail Hail.

Estadio thanks for the link to the Green Brigade. Pure magic. Anyone got a link to the goals ?

Is it just my imagination or is the blog a lot quieter in mornings after Celtic win and play well?

Burnley'78.

I'm like you regarding the crowd atmosphere makes a game, and there's nothing worse than sitting alongside a crowd of moaners, they kill any atmosphere thats being generated by the genuine support.

I sit in the Lisbon Lower and if I'd had been there last night I'd would have tried to move in beside them,it's a pleasure to be among good supporters.

Mort hopefully that means most are celebrating although would be good to see a few of the WGS critics after one or two games come on and say the good stuff about the players , the team and Gordon Strachan. Some really positive stuff on the blog these last few games , Aalborg aside , makes me really envy you bhoys and ghirls who can get to the games. Enjoy the good times .

That Herald article posted on the last article was a disgrace, chastising season ticket holders from all over the country (world?) for not turning up for a "free" game. Does the writer not realise that fans in Ireland/the Highlands/England have to factor in petrol money/food/time off work? He might want to have a look at his front pages and realise we're not all as well-off as him and his hack chums. I'm pretty sure that was a comparable turnout to, say, Rangers v Kaunas.

I noticed at the game last night we're taking the Herald shilling for an advertising hoarding down at the main stand/Jock Stein corner. Surely not after the bead-rattling fiasco?

Taurangabhoy, there's a link to the goals on the previous article, if I've done this right you should get them here

SonsOfErin,

It is satisfying to have players who can cover more than one position. Especially when you think back to when some of them couldn't cover one.

I thought Mark Wilson's performance on Sunday allowed Naka to shine. I was also impressed by his comments in the press about accepting he was part of a squad and wouldn't play every week. I was delighted when he signed for us and I hope he can stay clear of injury and have a great career in the hoops.

Therags...

Also, where was the Paradise Windfall draw?! I wanted my two seconds of thinking I might have a spare £8,500 before they draw out a ticket starting with a letter at the other end of the alphabet from the one in my hand!

I know I should not be commenting on Celtic or having an opinion on anything happening in Scotland due to being an ex pat (traitor)
(ref: J. Simpson, previous thread)
but I have to say what a great atmosphere was transmitted through my radio into my we traitorous hoose last night. 23,500 fans in the ground, great support for this stage of the cup and against opposition from a lower division.

Singing from the Green Brigade was a joy to hear. It actually sounded like an away match such was the general enthusiasm and support shown to our players on the park.

We do seem to have a nice wee squad developing here. We also have young players who have known success and are improving year on year. To bring seven new players into the side last without weakening the team shows good strengh in depth.

oldtim67

I'm in the same camp as you and Burnley'78 when it comes to supporting or moaning.
Nothing worse than sitting in an atmoshpere where everything is negative - it eventually gets to the players as well - that is not 'Paradise".

If only we could build on the efforts of the Green Brigade and sing the football songs for the 90 minutes.

Where are all the doomsday merchants, the guys who only come on here when we've had a setback? What about the ongoing debate re contenders for the worst player in the team - when is that due to start? If your happy to condemn them when it doesn't work out you should - if only for your own blog credibility - come on and give the bhoys credit when they do well.

"It seems incredible that a current German internationalist cannot claim to be 1st choice at right back but that should be the case."

http://celticfcmatchreports.blogspot.com/

cheers oneantonrogan and thanks canamalar for posting. Scott Browns goal was an oustanding piece of team play and a very well taken final chip from SB. In every clip you could see Aiden zipping about at speed and getting that final ball into the danger area. Great stuff. Night all.

...from the Jock Stein Stand.

Just how good is Samaras!!! seriously, the SSM must be a master negotiator to get this guy for £1M. At the start of the season a gers fan bet me Kenny Miller would score more than Sammy, I said it was a stupid bet so he upped the ante... he's gone strangely quiet now. I believe he'll be paying out by christmas.

standing ovation for the Green Brigade, did not stop for the entire 90mins, thought Strachan would've sent the players over to that corner at the end. They were just as entertaining as the flowing football!

Speaking as a lapsed season ticket holder whe now only gets to around 30% of CP games I have to agree with previous comments on the moaners. I sit in various areas and am amazed at how much greeting the locals do when we have just won a 3rd successive title and again a name in Europe. Footballs all about opinions and that is great - but we should have our own opinions - by that I mean stop beliveing the hun press and all the crap on Radion Snyde.

Sure we can improve - Im sure the older guys will tell you if they are honest that the lions were not perfect either. The day you stop improving is the day you get caught by the team behind you (in any job).

Regards the Green Brigade - I was like the kids mentioned in other posts - if I wasnt at the Celtic end I would have made my way up there. Those two stewards should have been paid double time last night. Whats the betting that the beaks put 10 stewards in there saturday.

Last night was really good fun. The football was good and the Fans were great. Well done to all in the Green Brigade. Also all the others who headed over to that area to lend their voices. It was like the olden days. I really enjoyed it. Oh aye, and the Reserves pumped the Huns!

Don't wish to rain on anyone's parade but seeing as some posters are implying that the average "mineshafter" likes to lurk in a shady corner following a decent result, I would like to offer the following points to the blog:

1. We have played two 'key' games this season and horribly failed to deliver on both occasions
2. Didn't we enjoy a similar purple patch at the same time last season, scoring lots of goals and playing some fairly attractive football? This came to an abrupt end at about end of November. I am yet to be convinced that this style of football can be sustained.

Have enjoyed some of the football some of the time this season but am not getting carried away. There are still some glaring deficiencies in this side (e.g. you could drive a double-decker bus through the gap in our 1st choice central defence) and until these are addressed we will not reach the levels to which we all aspire.

Villareal away is the next acid test. The time for optimism will be when we come away from there with something.

Couldn't make the game last night, but by all accounts another good performance. Delighted to see big Sammi keep up the scoring run. Also delighted to see Scott Brown on the scoresheet - hopefully this will be another step forward for him in terms of confidence and drive.

Can we be spared the gloating pleas for the moaners to come on and give the team praise ? I don't understand why anyone who is looking for improvement from the team is branded a moaner. No team is perfect, none - and we should always be looking for improvements no matter the results. If some people are happy at bad results fair enough, but don't condemn the supporters who aren't and who demand improvement. One thing every club and support should strive against is complacency, by eliminating 'the moaners' we're getting one step closer to it.

Hail Hail.

i was with my wee ghirl last night and we had to move after 10minutes as there was a young guy shouting and swearing, more interested than the opposition fans than the game. She was terrified and asked to move. (doesn't hear that ind of language at home)
My point being, why was a young guy given a seat in the parent/child area when there was another 20 thousand seats to offer.?

i ended up walking round to the 67 lounge from my seat..no swearing allowed there....:)

Morning Bhoys,

Not posted for a while but thought it was about time I did. Just seen the goals from last night and have caught all other recent matches on the box.

Like most of you there is much to be positive about - the strength in depth, the quality of the passing AND as the Soccer AM lot say - goals, goals, goals!

Pleased for Brown - hopefully getting that goal and the general confidence WGS has shown in him will push him on to be the player we all hoped he could become. He's certainly looked the part more with Crosas in behind him. As much as the strength in depth is pleasing, I'd like to see WGS get as settled a side as possible - the longer these bhoys play together the better they'll get.

Final word for big Sammy - I'll hold my hands up to being a bit underwhelmed when we opted to sign him permanently (admittedly that was before I realised he only cost a million quid). But I'm more than happy to eat public humble pie - he's been a revelation this season and starting to show the form that presumably persuaded City to spend £6m on him.

Well done WGS!

Hail hail,

EHIY

Kitalba

Re your post yesterday, apologies for delay in response, we seem to be at cross purposes a wee bit. Sorry if I have upset you. I do think I understand your point, but perhaps did not articulate mine very well.

Ref being called offensive names by fans of the opposite team.

This is a funny one. My wife, and kids, have rarely been called offensive names by supporters of the other team because, maybe wrongly, I rarely put them in the position of being exposed to that possibility.

The reality is that I have witnessed fans call other teams fans very bad names all over the world, sometimes with more venom than others. I have witnessed many Celtic supporters call Rangers fans all kinds of bad names, usually suffixed by a swearword for effect. If you want to avoid that then it is easy in my experience. Just don't expose them to the situation. I don't, and it works for us, but I accept maybe not for everyone.

Sure the percentages might show a lot more of Rangers are worse than Celtic, but both have some bad boys. It will be a long time before we will be rid of that, and even longer for Rangers (if ever) I suspect.

My view own is that Celtic needs to focus on keeping its own house in order. As a club it has made great strides forward in this area in my lifetime, and as a 'people' the Irish in Scotland should be proud of their achievements, and not lower themselves to the depths of engaging in this current 'tit for tat'. It feels like Celtic fans are continuing to fight a war whic is already won, and might only score an own goal with this one now. The display last night showed how to really support the team in a positive manner.

I was struck by the similarity of your friends situation, and that highlighted by the Rangers fans in their concern about their traditions being not respected by their CEO. I was not suggesting that they were right, simply that they were feeling a similar levle of being let down by an institution that they had been commited to.

Ref Sponsorship (joint or otherwise)

An interesting and complex area.

As Paul stated the power of 2 vs 1 does have significant appeal to some sponsors. The real Old Firm value in media terms over the past 3 or 5 years is probably skewed by Rangers 2 good UEFA runs, and decent CL performances vs Celtic's decent CL performance (TV and print media hits increase significantly with UEFA Cup vs CL due to CL being swamped by sponsor partners).

So if awareness is the key requirement then 'Old Firm' makes sense to potential partners. In the current climate (evidence Scottish Cup) we are not in a 'sellers market'.

In my opinion going it alone with one of the Old Firm for a sponsor might work if the core target was outside of Scotland and away from the 'baggage' (eg Chang on Everton etc), but the very poor exposure which Scottish football gets limits the value significantly. It might also work with a small local company looking to capture a percentage of 'loyal' local consumers, and not caring about the rest, but this again might limit the value.

Creative head on now ....... maybe Celtic go without a shirt sponsor, or rotate annually with local charity logo (in keeping with roots of club), making up the money shortfall selling a new kit each year ?

Overall I sense that the Celtic board are being pragmatic, and acting with dignity. I do not detect that they are anyone's fools. I sense they have Celtic at heart, for the long term. My biggest gripe is the lack of enrgy or desire to change the playing environment, and break free from the current commercial 'groundhog day......but that is a whole other matter.

Couldn't make the game last night, but great to hear that good football was once more on show, goals-a-plenty and the atmosphere was great.

As someone who has long bemoaned the lack of atmosphere and the "not winning after 20 minutes, so lets have a go" whiners at Celtic Park over recent seasons, its great to hear that The Green Brigadiers were in full voice last night!
Long may that continue.

HAIL! HAIL!
Token

Lots of posters mentioning Scott Brown's good performance last night. OK it was only a tiring Livingston, but he seemed to have a great deal of confidence going forward. Several times he was the furthest player up the park, he took his goal will and really should have had another too.

Aiden was also superb, especially in the second half, and deserved a goal.

Loovens looked composed, although as Paul points out he wasn't exactly pressured. Still it was good that he got a game in with McManus before Saturday.

And we have found our penalty taker! What's the betting that we don't get anotherone for months now?

Skippy still looks off form though. I think his lack of goals is getting to him a bit and he is snatching at chances where he would have show more composure last season. maybe a couple of games in the reserves to regain his scoring touch is the answer.

Kitalba

To clarify re previous post. I was not suggesting don't take wives kids etc to the game. Mine go regualrly. I was merely meaning I don't encourage them going via the Bristol Bar, or The Louden, or walking up Springfield Rd to an Old Firm match !

Prince Myshkin

to the new tune of "McCurry, we know.....")

Re earlier post on Mr G MacPherson, of the Herald, totally agree with your take on his snide article on the Bhoys victory last night.

I'm pretty sure this is the same G Macpherson student "hack" that I went to uni with. He was going out with my girlfiend's pal at the time.( the pal was also a hack and now has a national byline, if Im right.)

If central casting needed a hun quickly they could do no better than call the bold Graeme. The crowd we went round with were predominantly but not exclusively tims - this character used to visibly recoil when in our company, even when the subject wasn't the Hoops.

Surprisingly if you look on journalisted dot com, he's written more on the FOD than ANYTHING else.

Horrible hurtin' hun hack.

(Allegedly.)

On a lighter note - cant wait to see the re run of the game on Celtic TV.

Any one else fancy a home tie with Rangers in the QF of the League Cup ? December 27th feels like a long way away.

Re. exposing wives and kids to the vile rantings of the opposition. I am a wife, and the husband supports an vastly inferior non-SPL team. Due to my regular game-going mate being ill last week, I took him to the Champions League game to see some real football (having previously taken him to the SuperCaleyGoBallistic fiasco, his status as jinx is confirmed and he's not coming back). I spent a desperately embarrassing walk up the Gallowgate explaining our fans don't all sing about wanting Nacho Novo dead, and was delighted that people shouted the drunken bams down.

Great performance on and off the field. How the Green Brigade keep it going for 90 minutes is impressive. Disappointed in the Livi Artur baiting, surely at home stewards can identify and lob out a few as an example to others.

Sami is terrific at present but Skippy looks someone has stole his scone. Skoosh was great when he replaced Donati, who really has no place in our squad now. Time to cut loose. The big difference is in moving the ball forward. We look so dangerous when we do. Contrast to Aalborg, where, although against admittedly better opposition, every player recieving a pass, immediately went back with it leaving 9 men behind the ball. With Caddis, Aiden, Sami and Skoosh committing forward we are a far superior side. Does Loovens remind anyone of Mjallby? I'd take some of that. Only down side would be the wasted free kicks when Naka and Maloney aren't playing, Hartley's was ok, but the others...
Overall a great night in Paradise.

Draw for the CIS quarters is tomorrow at 2pm. Would rather not get them as the ties are played the week before the Man U home game.

Anyway, they haven't qualified for the next round!

Feel I have to add my voice to the Donati bashing. We really should be looking to off load him in January as he is 5th choice in midfield in my opinion, and must be on a fairly decent wage.

I know some people seem to think he will come good, but every time I see him he seems to be making a pigs ear of something and was a big factor in our pish central midfield pre-the last seven games last season. Nothing seems to have changed on that account, and I winch everytime I see his name on the team sheet or see him coming on.

Very interesting from Burnley'78 at 10:55 on sponsorship etc.

The Barcelona / UNICEF deal always interests me as it's great PR for them (probably whilst squeezing plenty cash from Nike, Estrella Damm etc which you see all around Camp Nou) but I can imagine the uproar if we announced something similar. I wonder how long it would be before the press started scratching around for Nike / Carling et al scare stories.

SCIAF or the Tommy Burns Cancer Charity on the Hoops :-)

Disburybhoy ,

Donati 5th choice ? Not so sure , I would put him

Brown
Crosas
Hartley
Robson
Maloney
McGeady
Nakamura
Caddis

Me (!)

Donati

Sannabhoy

Didsburybhoy ,

sorry for the typo in your name previously.

Just as a PS.

I only ever played in goal !!

Sannabhoy

Didsburybhoy - Just out of interest, who do you winch every time you see Donati's name on the teamsheet ? ;-)

Well done to the Green Brigade. This is the best vocal support i have witnessed in the new stadium ,for a low ley match.
Magnificent!

Does anyone know how Paddy McCourt is getting on? The last few times I have tuned into the Reserve matches he hasnt been on. Is he injured again or something?

eurochamps67, I did make the Mjallby comparison to a pal yesterday. I had said previously I thought he was a chubby flop-haired chap not unlike Mark McNally, but have changed that to a big sturdy Scandinavian just like big Johann. Isn't is easy to revise opinions based on one game :-)

Rama78 - Paddy was part of the reserve team which humbled the Huns yesterday. And played a big part apparently.

Thismancraig,

The UNICEF / Barcelona sponsorship also interests me. I keep coming to the conclusion that it is a precursor to Barcelona having a corporate sponsor on their shirt. It is a way of easing the fans into the idea of a logo on the front of the strip.

It will be interesting to see how it develops.

Therags...

OK, I don't know if I'm a moaner or simply jinxed but so far the games I have seen are-

St Mirren [h], the Shame [h] Aalborg [h] and the Mothers [a].

As I don't like to comment on events I've not witnessed[!] then I've had 45 minutes of good football out of 360[ about average for GS era Celtic!;~).

We've had a couple of good results, but on the two occasions this season when we had to play well we failed to turn up. Running riot against Livi is all very well but we've two tough away fixtures in Europe coming up.

isnt it a squad game and now we dont have 1st; 2nd or 3rd choice players .. we have 3 for each position. the best performer in training and the fittest that day will play, dependant upon the tactics employed against that opposition.

Gordon is making a point of this this week in the (ahem) press.

Over the course of a long season we need the full squad. Some will play some games and others other games.

He went on at length about him having discussed this with the players about the method of how were approaching this season as a squad; going for all 4 trophies.

The players know this; and so should we now. The (ahem) press, will make a point about "players dropped" when in reality its tinker-man squad rotation and horses for courses.

Dont listen to them. They are driving a wedge between us and the club.

I remember seeing big Dolph close up at Rugby park, 100 mph through ball, man, terracing wall if need be. Loved it.
That's what I hope for in Loovens, no messing. Quality

Was at the reserves yesterday and Paddy looked a bit out of sorts first half - big stong boy with good feet but didnt get involved enogh playing wide. Second half came inside a bit and looked a far better player - suppose he got on the ball more and his confidence looked better.

Neil Lennon gave him constant support from the side lines which is probably what the boy needs right now.

Praise to Neil also as he took a bit of stick from the FOD support and handled it well which is more than could be said for Charlie Adam who lost it a bit due to the pie eater slagging he took from us.

Henrik's Sombrero @ 11.52. Brilliant. Still laughing now

hi all,
must agree with earlier posters .
Big Sammy fantastic the whole game, first half he was tring to bring everyone into match.
skippy needs big rocket up his big erse.
oh and green grigade bhoys excellant all night, well done.

Henriks Sombrero thanks for the info. What was the score in the game and did Paddy score or provide? It isnt updated on the celtic website!

Rama - 3-1 to the hoops. I'll leave it to jinkysboy to provide details as I wasn't at game.

01bhoy.

And what would that be my friend.

Barring a certain 45 mins all the games since Falkirk have been great to watch, Im really enjoying our football at the moment.

A guy I know went to the Aalborg game last week while on business in Glasgow, he said when he got back we where the biggest bunch of moaners he’d ever heard at a match!

sorry ,
that should be GREEN BRIGADE.

BORUC SNUB LEADS TO CELTIC DEPARTURE

"Boruc has been sensationally dropped from the Celtic team. Celtic manager Strachan as good as admitted to press that Boruc's off filed endeavours had resulted in this action.

Strachan's decision not to stand by his goal keeper, who has been a shadow of his former self this season, and following his being rewarded with a mega bucks new contract, will likely lead to Boruc's departure from Celtic Park in January. Meanwhile, over the other side of the city, McGregor continues to play well and to enjoy the unqualified support of his manager - such excellent man management a real feature of Walter's indomitable style."

reserves in impressive triumph over rangers
Gregor Kyle
CELTIC'S reserve side showed their class and maintained their 100 per cent league record, coming back from a goal behind to beat Rangers 3-1 in the first derby of the season.

The Hoops had to stand up to some robust challenges from their city rivals in this match and lost two players through injury in the opening period.

But after conceding a goal right on the stroke of half-time they turned on the style in the second period, with Paul McGowan grabbing a double and Ben Hutchinson chipping the keeper late on to round off a determined and disciplined display.

Celtic’s plans were disrupted in the first minute when Michael McGlinchey fell under the weight of a challenge and was forced to limp off the field with what looked to be a painful ankle injury.

The midfielder was still making his way round trackside when Rangers carved out the opening chances of the match through Rory Loy and Aaron Niguez, with Koki Mizuno still waiting to take the field as McGlinchey's replacement.

That first attempt was driven in at close range and saved at his near post by Scott Fox and the second was a dipping set piece from Rangers’ Spanish winger which rattled off the crossbar and was hooked away by Darren O’Dea.

The pace of play eventually dipped, although the intensity of the challenges did not and Andrew Shinnie picked up the first yellow card of the game for a crude lunge on Paddy McCourt in the 12th minute.

Gradually, Celtic began to find their rhythm, with Paul McGowan desperately unlucky to have not given his side the lead with the cheekiest of attempts on goal after 20 minutes.

With Rangers defender William McLachlan rushing in on his right, the little striker’s first touch on the edge of the penalty box carried the ball past the defender, with his second a lovely little chip which bounced off the crossbar.

It seemed as though this chance signalled the start of a promising spell for Celtic until they suffered another set-back, with Jean-Joel Perrier-Doumbe the next man to go off injured.

Then, with the half-time whistle just seconds away, Rangers again threatened, with Loy firing off a warning when he sent his glancing header wide, before Ross Harvey stole in at the back post to pinch the opener.

All it took was the slightest lapse in concentration at a Chris Burke corner to allow the Rangers centre-back to make his run and rise above Richie Towell and Scott Fox to power home his header.

Having regrouped during the interval, Celtic started the second half positively, with Ben Hutchinson squeezed out as he attempted to get on the end of a Koki Mizuno cross.

Eight minutes later the Celtic striker brushed aside two of his markers and fired in a low drive from 20 yards out which Graeme Smith collected at the second attempt and as Rangers attempted to contain him, Ross Harvey was lucky to escape with a warning as he slid in recklessly.

Then came the next thumping challenge, right on the hour mark, with John Fleck booked for a late tackle which sent Mizuno flying.

Even by this stage in the match, Celtic had yet to really get into their full stride, although there were little flashes of invention and promise and Paul McGowan was left cursing himself after missing the gilt-edged chance of the game.

The striker was put through one-on-one with the keeper by the cleverest of passes in behind the Rangers back four by McCourt, but failed to finish and moments later, Hutchinson again came close, sending a header over.

Celtic stuck to the task, though, and when Mizuno showed McLachlan a clean pair of heels at the byline and lifted in a cross in the 66th minute, McGowan snapped up the opportunity, bulleting his header past Smith from the six yards out.

Having been limited to just one attempt on goal in this half, a 25-yarder from Fleck which went high and wide, Rangers’ frustration was growing, with substitute Charlie Adam tangling with the 17-year-old Towell after diving in from the back and Niguez booked for persistent fouling.

In the face of this determined aggression, Celtic stuck to their game plan and then, with just over 10 minutes remaining, they carved open the Rangers back four with a superb passing move.

Having patiently kept possession, the ball was worked to McCourt, who threaded in a pass to Cawley on the edge of the penalty box. The little midfielder then took a touch which knocked Harvey off balance, before rolling the lightest of passes in to the feet of McGowan, who edged in front of Jordan McMillan and finished first time.

It was a great goal, beautifully worked in a style that is encouraged in McStay’s reserve side, although they did have to show their mettle as they stood up to the challenges and a late flurry from Rangers, which saw Adam collect a yellow card.

But there was still one great finish left in the game and when the ball was lifted down the right channel for Hutchinson, the striker looked up from the corner of the box and saw Smith rushing out to meet him.

Turning to meet the ball, the striker lifted it first time on the volley over the head of the Rangers keeper and in under the crossbar.

It was no less than Celtic deserved in the end, for their flair and imagination, with the result serving as a confidence booster for this young reserve squad, while handing them an early advantage as they go for eight-in-a-row.

Breaking my silence here to join the praise for the Green Brigade. I was in the corner next to the Livi fans and more than once felt like running over to join in.

We performed well in the 2nd half last night which made up for a relatively poor first.

Anyone know why Livi supporters kept singing "You've only got one shoe"? Everyone around me was baffled.

dannybhoy67

If there is an attendance of 600 ,then a proportion of those 600 will moan.If the attendace is 60,000,then it stands to reason that there will be much more moaners.

As a support Celtic do NOT have a higher proportion of moaners than other clubs.

Infact ,i would suggest the opposite.

We have a fantastic support. With a small amount of undesireables, which all clubs have. Some more than others.

This article puts paid to one or two of the myths surrounding recent reports on TFS.

1. It was complained of last season, not because we were recently beaten.
2. Given that an organisation such as SRTRC has highlighted this particular bile to the SFA/SPL, why no public response?
3. If as suggested they have spoken to rfc regards TFS, why is MB trying to defend it as banter?
4. Given that this dates from last season why have the pygmies in the media ignored it until no other option?

If the Scottish authorities do not address this bile, what chance UEFA becoming involved?

jinksboy
Was there much of a crowd at the Reserve game?
Was was the ratio of Celtic/rangers support?

Summary of reserves FOD match

First half we played ok but the Doumbe went off injured and we lost another midfielder early doors too (think it was McGlinchey). We looked a bit lightweight as the FOD have their usual big boys at the back and in mid and Big Ben is a bit too big right now.

They scored from a corner on the half time whistle despite us being the better team (yeah I know it sounds familiar)

Second half we got stuck in and Paddy was involved a lot more though Koki had a good input running at their defence often. McGowan scored two good goals and was unlucky on another ocassion and Hutchison scored with a good breakaway lobbing their "mouthy " keeper.

Darren O Dea was the one player on the park who looked like he belonged in the 1st team (still baffeled how he isnt especially given his showing yesterday against Micks last night)

As regards the FOD (Being a fitba man I watch both sides) Their £2m signing Edu looked like a reserve team player, Chris Burke - I used to think he was dangerous on the ball - he is gash now. Big Time Charlie Adam - must be on Skippys diet as his shorts looked 2 sizes too small and he cant run. And as for their future "talent" such as Fleck - they didnt look as good as our young players.

All in all a satisfying day - watching us pump them in the reserves - then along to CP to watch some good ball playing skills and the fleet footed, green booted Greek Ghod playing a blinder. If he doesnt get player of the month for september theres no Greek Ghods in heaven. As said before by me and others - Ghod bless the Green Brigade for renewing my faith in "how to support your team"

Celticsephiroth

It's meant to imply that we are tinks, and thieves.
That our shoes are worn and we cannot afford a new pair, when one is worn.
The other analogy is that when shoes are put on display only one shoe is put out.So when you steal them ,you only get one.

It goes back to the Tramps thieves and Gypsies tag, they wish to label us with.

Tam Cowan said on radio Scotland at the weekend that he recalls Celtic fans singing it to the Motherwell fans after Ravenscraig shut down.

I don't remember it myself.

Corrib- I've got my shiny new Timcard to try out on Saturday.

I expect what will happen is I'll get to the gate-

computer says no -

and I'll spend all of the first half in a far from gruntled queue outside the ticket office.

I'll get back to my seat for the second half in time to watch us throw away a 2- goal lead ;~)

Corrib

I would reckon on a few hundred with marginally more knuckledraggers than us. best behaviour from most other than a bit of Neil lennon baiting from a few idiots but the man just laughed at the attempts.

First reserve game I have been to in decades - maybe cos it was an OF match but I enjoyed it and would go back again just to watch the boys development. Pity most games seem to be during weekdays.

Corrib04

I have been to more matches than don't brattback, so i am happier than he is with our performances.
However if i were just to base my assesment on the same matches that he had attended ,then i would agree with him.

We have faced two decent sies and failed miserably .
Getting humped by the Darnel, especially AT HOME, does not inspire confidence.

His view is a valid one, based on the matches he has seen in person.
Let's just wait and see how we perform against Villareal before we get carried away.

Does anyone know about the variety of songs played after the goals last night? Chelsea Dagger first, Pigbag (aka doo doo do-do doodoo Nakamura/Barry Robson) then Fiesta (welcome back!) then Ring of Fire for the fourth. Was looking forward to Hawaii 5-0 but it never materialised :-(

Paul67/anyone else, was that an experiment to see what went down better with the fans?

Oneantonrogan

Was a bit confucious about the running order myself.

Maybe they were getting in the swing of things with the GB

Anyone know why the scoreboards were off?

jinkysboy, the Lisbon Lions board's been out of action all season. The Jock Stein one was on though.

DBBiA

My bhoys got their new cards just in time for last nights match.

I did fear the worst also as we arrive at the gate but hey no problems straight through.

I'm sure you'll have the same success.

A guy that sat in front of me once shouted "Call yourselves the steelmen? No wonder the craig shut doon! Ye's are cluckin bright!"

Or words to that effect.

Ravenscraig was in Craigneuk anyway.

The Livi support had a wee section of very vocal fans. Occasionally annoying, bouncy bouncy, only one Kenny Miller. But they were outsung at every turn by the Green Brigade and by large groups of young kids who ripped it out them and started EASY chants at every goal.

Anyone know how you can join the Green Brigade as I know alot of guys who'd be well up for some of that action.

Corrib- I've got my shiny new Timcard to try out on Saturday

When did you get it , I have been waiting on mine since it failed at the Man City pre-eason game, ticket office said new one was posted last Thursday. ... maybe they forgot the stamp :(

Back to last night agree with most on here , this is the type of game we have stuggled with recently , half full celtic park, changs to the team. , Livi top of division 1.

but turned out no problem and once we had got the second goal there was some good fotball played. really enjoy it when the guys stat moving it about mostly forward. even big mick had a try at a 20 yrd shot that wasnt far away.

I am sure we will have harder games and have still to prove we can keep ot going but i feal it is looking positive.

hail hail

Dontbrattback,
Heres hoping your luck changes soon!
Your luck this season and oneantonrogans story reminded me of when I took my wife (then girlfriend) to her only match at CP.

She is not really into football but as I am a Celtic nutbar she was kind of interested in seeing what all the fuss was about.

So when she agreed to come to the game I was excited and looking forward to exposing her to the magic of CP.

However she hasnt been back since. The game in question? Celtic 0 Partick Thistle 0. Old CP Attendance 21,000. Just before we had our nice big shiny new stadium.

Tinytim,
I know my Man U jibe might have looked nasty, however I was referring to Oneantonrogans post about her better half following an inferior non spl team (hence Utd!) and Dontbrattbacks bad luck this season.

I'm more concerned about beating rangers at Ibrox than Villareal away i must admit

Kev- fingers crossed you're right; although this will be the third or fourth card I've been given.

Any plans on coming down to Brunton Park this season to see the Superblues ?

I was talking to porridgeandbananas in BBs and he said he was hoping to get to a game with his bhoys.

They've had a so-so start to the season but it's all about finding form at exactly the right time in Division 3.

Oneantonrogan

The two matches previous to last night I was in the Lisbon Lions stand - just shows how you can be oblivious to something happening (or not as the case may be) right above your head.

On my way out last night Marc Crosas came out in his BMW Jeep. Stopped at the traffic on London Road and opened his window to sign autos. Class.

Also as I walked back up London Road the Green Brigade were coming down towards the city and still singing their wee hearts out. Magic moments indeed.

DBBIA

Hope all is well in the South West. I now wonder when I'm sitting in the waiting room, fully 5 minutes after the previous patient has skied the park, if the doc isn't finishing off a post on his favourite blog.

Anyways, your earlier point is essentially on flair Vs substance; There is a nagging worry that, for all the team is showing up very well in some games, the two big games so far have shown us to be somewhat less than outstanding. Dr Jo's team was simlar, with Moravcik and Viduka doing some remarkable things in games Vs say Hibs, but the team unable to deliver results in the tougher matches.

I guess its a fine balance. I'm sure Ghordon would like to be remembered for the breathtaking style of his team, but I bet we'd (mostly) all prefer him to be remembered for his unparalleled success. If nothing else, Ghordon is a winner first.

It won't take long to look back to mid season last year and see your point being made in reverse - complaints that we're all substance, nae style. Harking back to the fabulous Tommy Burns days, blah blah.

Point is, I think we all agree there's a fair bit of work to do to improve the team such that we can go to Ibrox and dominate them utterly as we used to, never mind expect to go to Manchester and compete.

Meantime, some exciting football to watch while the team improves is always welcome.

PS Got anything for Gout?

As i posted earlier i won't be taking any children along this week.
if any one needs a parent and child in 418 i could arrange to swap his/her ticket for their chance to take 1 child with them..
i will be in BB's prior to game on Sat...

Thanks for the info Jinksyboy

Long may wee Gordon's rotation policy continue if the bhoys are serving up these kind of performances. Certainly no forthcoming or due praise noticed for him on this thread, I've still got a bee in my bunnet about how he is preceived by some of you lot! Methinks he will surprise us all v Villareal in getting at least a point.

billimatimforevertheoptimist.

Didn't make the game last night due to a bit of soft tissue damage to my neck, shoulders and back (used to call it whiplash in the old days but seemingly NHS are not allowed to call it that anymore). Sounds like another good performance last night from both the Hoops and the Green Brigade. Highlights will be on the Beeb tonight during half-time interval of the REARS game, i'm told.

Im certain that there is a connection in Georgious vast improvement with the colour of his footwear. Since he binned the orange boots for green and white ones his feet are blessed. Maybe we skippy should eat his current pair and get Georgious to ask his boot sponsor for a smaller pair for Skippy.

Man arrested over Lennon attack

A man has been arrested over an alleged assault on Celtic coach Neil Lennon in the west end of Glasgow earlier this month.

The 46-year-old is expected to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Police said inquiries were continuing to trace another man who is believed to have been involved.

Lennon was knocked unconscious during the attack, which happened hours after Celtic lost their SPL home match against Old Firm rivals Rangers.

From previous article:

GG thanks for info. I was sure that Setanta were scheduled to provide the feed yesterday for North America. This is the 2nd game in the row that they have deliberately shafted us. As I said on the last thread I suspected this was pay back for getting kicked out, in a very public manner, of the recent press conference.
I agree totally with you, it would be ideal if Celtic/NAFCSC could get the OK for CSCs to broadcast the HD version of C67. It is a great feed and is normally reliable (yesterday being the exception). Paul67 has intimated that this is the way Celtic are moving anyway, but I think a reasonable case could be made for Setanta breaking their contract by not fulfilling their obligations (twice in one week).

Hail Hail

If he was knocking in the goals we could see his point but his form has dipped from last season. I read an article that he knows he isnt blessed with the most skill so he gives it 100% to make up for it. Well it doesnt look 100% right now - and if Aiden and JVOH and Naka can all get benched then he cant really complain.

Think he is just a moaner by nature but as far as I can see Sammy is our #1 striker right now and with JVOH and Maloney about that puts Skippy at #4 unless he shows a lot more than he is now.

I still think he will come good though - and when it does maybe we wont need that plastic surgeon - just pass his number to Uncle Wattie as he will need it at te end of a fruitless season

Tiny Tim, it was a Cliftonville fan that said that so he wouldn’t even be used to a crowd of 600 (hard hat on for north Belfast reds assault)

I see Celtic are considering buying wee Burkey despite the fact that this report suggests there is a drug misuse issue.

setanta are monkeys

within 10 minutes they posted then edited this story; chopping off the end bit about Boruc leaving...

http://sport.setanta.com/en/Sport/News/Football/2008/09/24/SPL-Celtic-linked-to-Burki-and-Cervic/

Celtic could be set to land a double raid for Switzerland midfielder Sandro Burki and American goalkeeper Dominic Cervi.

According to Swiss newspaper Aargauer Zeitung, 23-year-old Switzerland international Burki discussed a move to Glasgow last week.

The former Bayern Munich youngster is content at current club FC Aarau, but the club are interested in the sale in order to capitalise on Burki’s stock on the European transfer market.

A former winner of the Under-17 European Championships, Burki’s career stalled since his move to Bayern, but he has enjoyed a new lease of life at Aarau where he recently earned his international debut against Cyprus.

Meanwhile, 6ft 6in keeper Dominic Cervi is expected to sign before the weekend, with a medical reportedly set to take place at Celtic Park on Wednesday.

The US has provided some excellent shot-stoppers for British clubs in the last decade, including the likes of Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller and Tim Howard.

Cervi is now a free agent after refusing to sign for Chicago Fire and can join Celtic for nothing, having impressed Gordon Strachan during a three-week trial back in April.

Have to join in the praise of the Green Brigade......

I was creased by some of their antic's last night.

The back's turned and shimmy across the rows was hilarious....anybody know here that came from?

And I loved them splitting in two and singing 'Celtic' at each other as if it was rival supporters singing at each other.

All we could see was two stewards running up and down the aisle's trying to keep them in their seats!

Great songs....great behaviour.....the Hun's would do worse to have a look at how fan's can enjoy themselves without offending anyone.

Briliant.....I take me hat of tae ye!

Burnley’78:

First off, thanks for taking your time on the considered response, it is appreciated. Now I said to our host that I would drop the subject on this forum, and I will.

A barb, or a perceived barb, from a fellow Fenian Bee, is for me, a thousand times worse than anything I have had said to me by any non-member from without our extended ‘family’.

A wee story: I was over in Perth at the start of this year. I was on my way to meet with Kano, and his good mate Ramie, in Rosie O’Grady’s, the home of the Perth, WA, Celtic Supporters club.

I was staying in a city hotel and had to walk about a kilometre to meet them. It was dark and deserted, about mid-night our time. I was a stranger in that city and knew only the folk I was on my way to meet.

I had a Celtic polo shirt on. Behind me I heard a noise, a sort of feral grunting and snorting; I turned and a rather large specimen was bearing down on me on his too-small pushbike. He was half my age and three times my size and as he went past he phlegmed a quaint “eff you, you Fenian Bee”. He must have had very important business to attend to, because he did not want to take our little conversation to its next level.

I continued on my way and met the guys in the boozer where I boasted that I had just been baptised, a taig, on Australian soil. I enjoyed his attempt at insult, I really did, and if I ever get the chance to meet you, over a beer, I will explain why.

I cannot smother and shelter those that are dear to me, no matter how much I would love to distance them from all that is not nice in this world. To do so would not be wise. However, there is not nice, and there is, ‘not nice’.

My friends, and what passes for - human existence - that populates other sites are moral poles apart. Never the twain shall meet. Next to death and taxes, I can guarantee that.

I don’t know if you have read my previous posts going back the best part of a year advocating Celtic headline a charity on our strips front rather than have a shared sponsor with any other club. I don’t speak for Celtic, or anybody else, but I just think that it would be Celtic to do the right thing and to hell with the commercial ramifications.

I do not believe we are ‘Siamese clubs’ and I see no long term gain in perpetuating the economic umbilical. At some point, we are going to have to be hard hearted and just sling them a dizzy. Better to get it over and done with, regardless of the sort term pain, and then we can both go our separate ways, as totally separate entities, and see where life takes us.

Fergus McCann’s legacy to the eternal Celtic, was our stadium, our pride, and his share distribution.

Dermot Desmond has given us large success and financial stability. It would be nice, for me, if he completed that trilogy with commercial autonomy.

Burnley’78, I apologise for jumping down your throat, I shouldn’t have, but in my defence I thought my words were being misconstrued and that I was being misrepresented by one of my own.

If you are in Glasgow when I am in ‘dear’ Glasgow, I get the first beers.

I'd recommend the Parlour on the Upper West side of Manhattan (250 West 86th St) - you can take the subway to almost the front door. I was in NYC for the 6-2 game against TFOD a few years back and got the warmest of welcomes. There is a local CSC that make this Irish bar their HQ.

It was a shame I was on the move later that day because the party was just kicking off at 10am their time when the match finished!!

Northside_dweller - Very good!!

Paul67, a humble thought in recent board reliability: With hundreds of messages per thread, and hundreds of people each downloading those messages, once a minute (or more often) each -- especially during matches -- the load has to be tremendous. Perhaps thought should be given to paging the posts, so that no more than maybe 20-50 were displayed on any given page? That way a visitor only has to refresh a given page, or lick to the next page, to see the most recent posts, rather than displaying 200-500 messages that they have already read to get to the half dozen they have not yet read? :-) Anyway, just an idea, thanx for the forum!

Click to the next page, not "lick to the next page". (The thought of which I'd rather not contemplate ...)

PaddyBhoy 2.31pm

in terms of "...The back's turned and shimmy across the rows" the first I saw doing this in the flesh were the FC Copenhagen "ultras"/hard-core fans when their whole section (about 1/4 of the stand that they all congregate in) took part in this wee shindig. That was at the CL game in Copenhagen back in Dec 2006.

It was impressive and in fact some of us tried our own version during the game but due to the fact that Celtic were abysmal that night, it never really caught the imagination as we were all on too much of a downer!

No doubt other fans across Europe have a smiliar theme but this was the first time that I had seen it or recall seeing it anyway.

Be my guest forwarding my post to Setanta. I think they know they have lost the Celtic support abroad, but it can only be put down to their 3rd rate product and support. The owner of the bar of my new CSC tried to get assistance from their Support line a couple of weeks ago after having problems receiving the Motherwell game. Setantas assistance was to hang up the phone the guy!!
Setanta are a complete disgrace and, as an Irishman, they embarrass me no end.
I love to watch the GAA games, hurling being my favourite but I, along with many others, refuse to pay them the $20 to watch the games, even if it is an All-Ireland Final.

JoeBrann67 - Parlour every time, as for Tom D'Saro. See Mooney sent you and you'll not put your hand in your pocket !

as should read ask obviously.

I didn't make it up last night but it's good to see The Gren Brigade were on top form. Since the start of last season they have been growing in number at the back of 112 and now occupy quite a large area of that section, and they're even getting tickets in 111, and imagine 113 to the other side. The seat beside myself at the back of 111 has been unoccupied for a couple of years and it seems a young member of them has taken it.

It definitely helps when you have a large group of guys concentrated in one are instead of being dotted around the place. Saying that, they do seem to give up a lot of their time with banners, displays, new songs from the Continent etc. As a lot of guys have said the kids love them and by them singing good Celtic songs throughout the game it can only rub off on the youngsters how to support your team vocally.

If only they could learn how to display that banner the right way up! ;)

Jungle-Ed, I don't think the issue is so much finding the end of the thread, rather the load that loads of people constantly refreshing a page full of information puts on the server (hence crashes at times of high activity). If the refreshed pages are smaller, it doesn't make CQN central overheat and occasionally blow up because it's not refreshing so much information whenever anyone refreshes/updates the page.

(apologies if I'm misinterpreting, and also for appallingly untechnical explanation)

"Kingsnake,
if there are 100s of posts just press end, then page up til you come to the place you left. It takes seconds.
Jungle-ed"

Not the point. The point is that you still have to download all the hundreds of posts, and that is an excessive, and unnecessary, load on the server. :-)

I know I shouldn't be looking at the low brow media but every so often when surfing the web I can't help rubber necking. So... is there even a grain of truth in these rumours that WGS and Aiden have a 'fractured' relationship and that, rather than a loss of form, is the reason for his place on the bench in the past couple of games?

I can already guess the answer but some reassurance that this is yet further media mischief making would put my mind at rest......

I would absolutely be exstatically happy if Hearts of Midlithuania went bankrupt. How good would that be? To watch REARS OF THE EAST go to wall would be a capitulation of astranomical hilarity in my house. Ewan Cameron would be greetin into his cornflakes for weeks but can you imagine how the real Hearts of Midlithuania would feel. At least it would be one less bigoted sectarian pit we would have to visit although I imagine the number of huns with their bus fare would increase substantially along the M8 to bigot dome on a Saturday. Being financed by a bank in Lithuania I am sure the global credit crunch will be having an effect but I hadn't imagined that it wwould come to pass that the Jamtarts are at risk. Even if it is only a small possibility I am sitting here rubbing my hands, smiling and waiting to see what the future holds for the Hearts of Midlithuania.

P.S. I would have feelings of sorrow for the innocent employees and their families if Hearts of Midlithuania folded but I would revel in the glorious fall of the club and it's sickening fans.

Just would like to say it was great listening to the fans singing at the game last night felt as though I was back in the sixties and the "choir" were on song - only then they were situated at the other end of the ground. Hope it continues as I feel there is a lack of atmosphere at a lot of the games these days.

The rags

Fair comment - I've not seen more than the goals yet but he seemed to be at the heart of everything. I can see why they'll have their differences - Aiden has that gallusness that you need to be an exceptional player but he still moans at his teammates and the ref too much for my liking. I'm sure WGS is trying to kick that out of him, and rightly so. Aiden's nose might also be out of joint as POTY he probably thinks he deserves his spot despite some off games. He might have a point.

From my point of view I think having him and Maloney battling out for a berth can only be good for both (if they tackle it the right way) and certainly the team which can only thrive with competition for every position.

As rob mclean would say theres something sinister about this

AN Irish Republican band has hit out at "small-minded people" who complained a cancer charity was to benefit from one of its Glasgow concerts.

Charlie and the Bhoys - whose repertoire consists of Irish Republican anthems and songs about Celtic FC - had planned to donate money to Macmillan Cancer Support.

But six e-mails were sent to the charity complaining about its involvement with the band, which is playing at the Barrowland on Fridya

At an emergency meeting of band organisers it was decided to give the money to a skin cancer charity set up by the family of late Celtic star Tommy Burns instead.

The move came as Glasgow councillors banned a march by two Republican bands in the East End because it would have coincided with the concert.

Police objected, claiming it could have led to trouble in the streets and stretched their resources.

The decision to ban the march, reported in later editions of last night's Evening Times and at www.eveningtimes.co.uk, is the first time in recent years a march has been refused permission.

A statement on the Charlie and the Bhoys website said the band was contacted on Monday by Macmillan Cancer Support officials.

It added: "The Macmillan Trust feel they cannot give us a statement as it may look like they were taking sides.

"They are as shocked as us that a number of small-minded people have gone to these lengths to stop a wonderful charity from benefiting from this night.

"We pray these complainants are never affected by the terrible blight that is cancer and never have to rely on the charity's services.

"All money raised on the night will now go to the Tommy Burns skin cancer charity."

A spokeswoman for the Macmillan charity said: "Our only purpose is to give support to people affected by cancer."

Wonder what Steven Davis and Kyle Lafferty think when they hear their fans telling them to go home.

I wonder how their "Ulster" Day went the other day. Ironic that they were supposed to be celebrating famous players from across the Irish Sea yet at the same time telling them to go home as the famine was over.

01bhoy - at a guess I'd say sending a vanquished invading army howeward to think again is slightly different to telling famine victims to sod off back where they came from....

o1bhoy

...because the English that were being set homewards to think again had tried to fight the Scots and were defeated. They came in war, thought they had the beating of us, and got sent away to have another wee think about trying it. This is in no way comparable telling immigrants/refugees who have settled in and contributed to a country that they should clear off back to where they came.

I see there is some speculation that Hearts might go the wall. Wasn't there some suggestion of this last season too?

By the way, great to hear of another good football match played by our team. Through work commitments, I haven't been able to see anything of the game yet. I imagine it'll be replayed on Celtic TV tonight.

Does the heart and soul good to see us playing the Glasgow Celtic Way. Hope it continues against Aberdeen on Saturday. My thanks to our manager who is beginning to deliver consistently on his promise of free flowing attacking football. Gaunyersel, Mr Strachan.

JoeBrann67,

Just to add to the consensus that has broken out, I have to say that The Parlour is the place to go in NYC. I've seen many games there over the years and always had a warm welcome from the regulars.

It's only a short taxi ride from midtown on a Sunday. 9am kick off on a Sunday morning though ...

If all goes to plan I may well be there myself for the Hamilton game in November.

Thanks Gordon_J

Looking forward to having an early morning pint and hopefully 3 points.

EHIY,

The only place I have seen the full lyrics is on CQN. I have only ever heard Rangers` fans singing the same two lines. The full lyrics are awful but I feel that those who belt ou the two lines are unlikely to knpw the whole song. If they do, then you have to recognise that they choose not to sing them. If they don`t, it puts a slightly different slant on their chant.I honestly thinh they are reacting (as is their wont) to their perception that we are Irish rather than Scottish.

Couldn't make it last night, so refreshing and seeing your text was serendipitous, Ulster-Celt. Ta.

At first glance, it seems the answer is not much difference at all. Semantics, nuances, context and all that. But the reality is so much different!

One extols a pan nationalist Scottish view and as a sidebar to that swipes at the English, as represented by a brutal and expansionist medieval monarch. It is intended to unite Scots, even if it uses schoolboy rhetoric that is a little embarrassing in the modern world. It is unifying (in theory) and is intended to be so.

The other simply denigrates a group of people (immigrants) from one country and makes no attempt to do anything but that. No mention of a Scottish identity, no mention of unity (except against these immigrants), no mention of a belief system that all could subscribe to. It is divisive and wants to create and sustain a two tier system. A them and us. First class and second class. It is intended to polarise Scotland and Scottish communities, by appealing to what they(singers etc) see as a latent emotion in Scotland and it's population; i.e. the concept that real Scots can't have any Irish blood, no matter how diluted it has become; that the Irish immigration has only had a negative impact on Scotland; that their Scotland would be better off if we were all returned to Ireland. It is the purely racist attitude of their Scottishness, that unless you are like us then you are not really "Scottish" mentality. The booing of McGeady, Lennon and Noel Hunt is all part of the same theory.

If the TFO song was written about English people, do you really think that there would be so little made of it? If the Flower song mentioned an Irish army being sent home to think again, would anyone at CP or timdom get agitated?

Similarly, if all the Scottish people in England were subjected to a song that referred to them in same terms as are contained in the TFO song, then the rags here would go ballistic, and there would be a guarranteed government response. It is this failure of the media to grasp the difference between the usual songs and this type of song.

The TFO song is sung so that it can insult and offend as deeply and as profoundly as possible. That is the intention of the TFO song.

The intention of the Flower song is not offensive, although some might become so.

No need for tin hats on here I think. Your question actually helps all of us affected by this, separate the issues and understand the subtleties in this debate. So thanks for that.
HH

Re: TFS, when this debate first started I said on here let them sing what they want they’ve been singing songs for years to wind us up. At that stage I had only heard the chorus of TFS. I was struck by the guy who said on CQN how do I explain this to my kids if they ask me to explain what the FOD fans are singing. I have a four year old and want to take him to CP as I have done with my other kids. Honestly that song takes chanting/singing to a different level.

There are people on here who can say things better than I can, I don’t tend to put long posts on because I don’t have the words at times. However this song is rotten to the core, it’s illegal and has no place in a football stadium or anywhere else for that matter.

Was there last night as always. Not for many a long year have I seen a group of fans creating such an atmosphere. It was better than the old Jungle(imo) and that takes some beating! To those who missed the game, that's how good it was.

The Green Brigade are the soul of Celtic. Customers they most certainly are not. Who will ever forget their famous SCOTLAND SHAME banner with the wee arrow pointing directly at the bluenoses and rednecks?

I know for a fact that at the Aalborg game some idiot came up beside them and began singing: soon there'll be no Protestants at all. The clown was told to stop, didn't do so and was then given short shrift.(or something like that)

Did anyone see the Marseille v Liverpool game last week with the two Marseille fans, one with a drum and the other with a microphone orchestrating the fans' singing? What an atmosphere they created. Surely something similar could be done for the Green Brigade lads. Like the rest of you who have posted today I'm sick to death of the moaners.

What do you think,Paul?

Excellent serial it takes me back to the ABC Minors days watching the Lone Ranger and Flash Gordon serials all that is missing is me getting hit in the head by a missle made of ice lolly sticks ( I forgot what we use to call them, something like a boomerang but begining with the letter K). What is going to happen to our hero, I hope he does not meet a grizzly demise with them masons doing something horrible to him with those Macaroon bars, a potato based confection death could be humiliating. If your serial is like any other ABC Minor movie I expect a bunch of kids (SOAL & Co) to burst in at the last moment and rescue poor Winston.

Keep up the good work WG, right now Kojo is probably plagiarizing your tale and selling it to a big Hollywood movie producer, just changing the scene from ML2 to Malibu Beach, Celtic to L.A. Dogers, Boynita played by Angelina Jolie and WG by Ben Turpin.

Earlier on in the day I noted a few hoops having a bash at Donati. Having now watched the game on T.V. up until Doanti's substitution for Skoosh, I am trying to work out why he had such bad press for last night performance on here. May I also add that I have only had a TV's perspective but Donati, as far as I could see, only made 1 bad pass the whole game. It seems to me that he is being slated for past performances rather than last nights performance and some fans are only looking to slate the mistakes rather than congratualte the good in a players performance.

I'd also like to point out that I have been a critic of Donati in the past and only yesterday stated that I did not think he was capable of holding a regular spot as he is too slow in both pace and thought. But when I see a player being slated because of past performances rather than the last performance it gets on my goat a bit. He may not have had a brilliant game but he cetainly did not have a stinker from what I have seen tonight on Tic TV.

ulster-bhoy and Moonbeams wet dream

Thank you lhads, I was beginning to think I needed my eyes tested. I thought Donati had a fine game yesterday, his turn and shoot strike was very powerful and thought he was unlucky it was saved. If I was Gordon yesterday, I would have taken Hartley off and left Momo on. A very tidy display by a much maligned bhoy.

Hail Hail

I didn't think Donati had a bad game at all yesterday, but each to their own, I guess. I don't get the continual Scott Brown slating either, and was standing up for Caldwell before the tide turned (not on here, I wasn't posting here then, but you can ask the guys in my local - had an argument with one of them on Friday about Scott Brown and am very much looking forward to giving it the big told-you-so when I see him at the weekend), and I tend to just assume that people are seeing things that I'm missing, which leads me to pay closer attention to the players singled out. If Donati gets a run on Saturday, I'll be paying closer critical attention to him, but he certainly didn't look out of place in our midfield last night.

Caldwell is the new Bobo: Scares the hell out of you sometimes, but then comes up with a monster game like last weekend. (Red card, at the end, aside, he had a great match.)

Kryten is the new Bobo?

I wouldnt quite go that far tbh.

He a ball playing defender. Bobo is a no-nonsense defender.

Moonbeams wet dream

Some people will only see what they want to see, so they are only looking out for mistakes, I posted after the Motherwell game when quite a few posters got quite negative about Celtic easing up in the second half and having a go at the Ghod-like Caldwell, I said I pity their poor children if they demand perfection from their kids the same as they demand perfection from certain Celtic players. Certain players at Celtic are not allowed to be human and make a mistake, Naylor should enjoy his time at the club now as posters are being quiet about him, but they are waiting to jump on him as soon as he makes a mistake. I can't think of a Celtic player that hasn't made a mistake that did not cost Celtic points even the KoK started of his Celtic career with a clanger. Poor WGS gets it worse he does a post-match interview with a mug of Tea in his hand and posters on here are moaning about it.

Moonbeams

I agree with you re Donati. I thought he didn't do that badly last night in a team which was very effective. A couple of times he was short changed by his team mates as well, which made him look less good. Certainly not worth the bad press he has had.

I see headlines of a crisis at Lennoxtown as our manager has the unenviable task of picking 4 from 9 potential midfield starters, as well as his 2 from 3 centre back challenge ! I only wish the CB challenge could be a 'horses for courses' 2 from 4 problem including big Bobo.

I guess we will also soon have a similar problem up front, if the Aussie gets himself fit again, Killen gets himself fixed and back to the sharpness he seemed to have got prior to going off with NZ, and Hutchinson keeps developing as he did at the end of last year......not to mention Gowser fulfilling his much vaunted capability.

Great problems to have really. Can't wait for Saturday. I would be going with : Boruc, Caddis, McManus, Loovens, Naylor, Naka, Crosas, Brown, Maloney, Samaras, JVOH.

What sharpness was this that Killen supposedly had? Not criticizing the lad, but even fit he would at best be #5 striker ...

Big prediction

Partick Thistle to win on pens tonight 8-7 ! In so doing they will tire out our rivals for Sunday's clash at Hibs which (after Samras hat trick on sat) will see normal order restored in the SPL prior to our first away CL win against our favourite other Spannish team.

I wonder what odds ?

Killen looked a prospect at Hibs and was scoring goals for fun before his injury. I thought he was doing well in the reserves?

KingSnake

I thought Killen was looking in very good shape prior to his NZ excursion. Agree that this was not apparent last season.

Just watching the reserves on the Daily Huddle just now. no' a bad wee goal from Hutch there...

o1bhoy @2.26

So your telling me that CQN has a link to WGS and influenced him in some way !!!!!! If only eh! I agree with your point - Alan Thompson lost us many a game with his moaning esepcially in OF games - I always thought the refs got him back 1st tackle - usually with a red card. Speaking as a "hotheaded moaner" myself - thats probably why I never made it as a pro - that and Im gash.

But seriously its one thing to be passionate and a bit vocal on occassion but the 3 mentioned by you never give up. Of course we agree that they have been wronged but its Scottish Football - what do you expect boys.

Soz for the time delay on this reply - had to drag myself out to the gym for a couple of hours - make up for the beers watching the FOD tonight. Regards the songs debate - we have a new one "We love you" and their new one is "TFS" Nuff said.

Those Green Brigade folk were brilliant, if mental. Where did they got the energy?
Not sure I like the bouncy bit, but then who am I to criticise? They were great.
What was that McGeady song?

"He plays on the left, he plays on the right, Aiden McGeady, he makes the Huns s***e". Which isn't strictly true, because last time I saw him v them he made Clubfoot look good, but hey...

Took the advice, went straight to Amazon and bought the "Deer Hunting with Jesus" book. Looking forward to reading it.
What about Samaras last night!
I've not been so impressed and excited by a player since Larsson.

Apologies if I missed any direct question, been out today.

Jinkysboy, I don’t remember Alan Thomson losing many games against Rangers, never mind being culpable in many defeats.

I do, however, remember his goals and general attitude being critical in a lot of wins against them; he is perhaps the player who I have seen lift his performance more against Rangers than any other team. A player who knew how to win the important games.

dennis 47, he is indeed a very exciting player.

Hi
I was wondering,
Is it required that the press always refer to the assault on Neil Lennon as an 'alleged' assault, or that he was 'allegedly' beaten up.
Is it a legal thing?

Are they still hoping that some evidence will surface to prove he did it to himself?

btw, the Celtic v Livi game is on Celtic TV at 20:00
RRC

Paul67

I remember that Alan Thompson well - I think that was Alan (1st Contract) Thompson. Maybe just my opinion but I agree with you up to that point - then he lost a bit of his ability and interest and tried to make up for it by getting involved in the wrong way. I seem to remember his record at the Hunnery ending badly with the red card against Lovenkrands sticking in my mind when he "took the bait" For a guy with his experience this was foolish at best.

Dont get me wrong - he was a great servant (much like the others of his era) but I think MON gave them all contract extensions beyong their worth.

Killen is far too injury prone.

He has been throughout his career.

It amazes me that teans ignore this when they sign players.

Craig Beattie would have been a better option for us had it not been for his injury problems.

Embdy watching the Villareal game? 2-0 up at home after 35mins. Look to be in dangerous form. Looking forward to taking them apart.

I don't really know if I want to or should post this, but here goes:

Setanta set to apologise to Gordon Strachan over Celtic row

Sep 24 2008 By Keith Jackson

GORDON STRACHAN will win an apology from Setanta TV bosses this week after booting a camera crew out of Lennoxtown on Tuesday.

Record Sport told yesterday how Celtic's manager had barred the satellite station from a press conference ahead of last night's Co-operative Insurance Cup clash with Livingston. At first it seemed Strachan was furious over the channel's failure to highlight a flashpoint during Sunday's SPL win at Rugby Park which saw Kilmarnock defender Frazer Wright aim a slap at Shunsuke Nakamura.

But we can now reveal that Strachan was, in fact, seething over something commentator Ian Crocker said during the live coverage of Celtic's 3-1 win.

Crocker claimed the Parkhead boss and his backroom team blamed Aiden McGeady for last month's 4-2 Old Firm defeat.

And it is this remark which led to Strachan taking direct action when the Setanta cameras turned up at his training HQ on Tuesday morning.

An apology has now been promised which will ease the tension between Celtic's manager and the broadcasters even if McGeady's relationship with Strachan remains fractured, possibly beyond repair.

Record Sport revealed last week how Strachan barred the player from a first-team debriefing in the aftermath of that capitulation to Rangers and McGeady was then benched for three successive matches against Motherwell, Aalborg and Kilmarnock.

Strachan and McGeady have shared a rollercoaster relationship over the last three seasons.

But the manager has become increasingly irritated by the attitude of the fans' favourite and is concerned about the effect it is having on the rest of the dressing room.

He wants his group to win and lose as a team and is hoping to force McGeady back into line.

DublinBhoy

It's a transparent attempt to irritate Celtic fans. Only works if you rise to it.

From any vantage point other than Scotland, it looks childish, comical even.

And anyway, the internet has rendered them null and void.

Rotation is the world.

Midweek review of last nights gubbings and news.

Forza

Right, so let me get this right. Strachan is unhappy that Setanta aired a viewpoint of this alleged bust-up. They apologised, he let them in. I would take that to mean that he doesn't like lies or half-truths being told, wouldn't you? Yet someone Keith Jacksie feels fit to basically say "Setanta apologised for saying things that upset Strachan, but I'm going to keep saying the same things anyway"??? And we let these guys into our press conferences??!?!?!?!

Is anyone else irritated at hearing Celtic described as "the defending champions"?
I don't know, it, by qualifying the title, seems to weaken it.
Of course I believe that that is the whole idea.
Paranoid?

Sorry, he'll let them back in. Wasn't Ian Crocker just commenting on what he'd read in Murray's diary, sorry, the Record, anyway?

I botched the,"bold,"thing!

Ball in the net for Thistle - ruled offside - wrongly, as the replay clearly shows.

I think it's just to signify that the competition is live again.

You'd have a case in my eyes if they called us 'defending champions' before the season was underway.

Re; moonbeams and Wet farts. Agree on the cesspit of bigots and scum but although they have quite a large minority of pure mindless idiots, isn't it all that much better when you see the state they are in and gubbing them into the bargain. Makes it all the more joyful and nearly as good as beating their bigoted brothers!

Paul,

Not long in myself after a very busy day too. So good to read an article where you wax lyrical about the performance, infact two articles in a row. It seems like it has been ages since we had one of those. What a refreshing tone to the last few weeks, especially the infamous server problem that crashed the blog and resulted in many grown men uttering the words, "what am I going to do with my life now". I hope these types of articles continue for the remainder of the season.

Paul, Bhoys, I dont want to deflate the mood with what I am going to say next, but, yip , but. We need to remain real. We need to stay in reality. At last though our season has begun. At last we have our joy. Now to the business of CL reality. The SPL will take care of itself, I have no worries there. But, yip, another one. The game next week against VillaREAL. A draw would be a FANTASTIC result. We should all know that. We should not be disappointed with a defeat as they are one of the best teams in europe on current form, so a draw would be better than FANTASTIC, it would be A WAY BACK TO QUALIFICATION!!. After the disappointment of Aalborg we have to re-assess our chances.

How will we qualify?

We need a draw in Villareal, we need to beat man ure and villareal at home and BEAT Aalborg in denmark. That is how we qualify. What a massive ask, or is it just me who thinks that in the cold light of day?

Simply beat the current CL champions at home ( I know we've done it before) and one of the best teams in europe at the moment. Can we do it? Can we be REAL and not castigate GS if we fail?

A huge ask is upon the team, the manager and ourselves in the next few weeks.

If we dont make the last 16 are we to be disappointed? If we parachute to the UEFA are we happy?

If we fail in both will we be happy?

Hail Hail

Paul67 et all

i've started getting replies from all the emails i sent to MP'sin reply to my complaints
about the last Glasgow Derby game and TFS here is a copy of the latest you'll notice what he does in his reply, rendering complaint as waste of time?

Here it reads;

Thank you for your email.

In relation, to this specific incident I note from Press
reports that this has been raised with the Irish Consulate.

I am opposed to all forms of sectarianism and bigotry, without
fear or favour. I applaud the work of Jack McConnell and the
previous Scottish Executive in this area and am disappointed
that the current SNP administration has failed to take this
agenda forward. These matters were raised in Parliament
recently by from First Minister Jack McConnell and I have
included a copy of the exchange below for your information.
Yours sincerely,
James

Jack McConnell (Motherwell and Wishaw) (Lab): As the First Minister
rightly pointed out in his statement, government is about leadership as
well as legislation. I hope that he will therefore support all his
colleagues in the Parliament who have consistently attacked sectarianism
over the years and join us all in condemning the attack on the Celtic
coach Neil Lennon and the threats that have been made to Rangers player
Nacho Novo, both of which show clearly that bigotry and religious hatred
are not yet in the dustbin of history for Scotland. Why has the First
Minister not maintained the progress on tackling sectarianism in
Scotland that was made in recent years? Will he commit to reconvene the
summit on sectarianism in this coming year, chair it personally, and
lead Scotland towards dumping sectarianism in the dustbin of history?

The First Minister: Let me join the former First Minister in the
condemnation of the attack on Neil Lennon and concern about
sectarianism. This Government, and every member in the chamber, believes
and knows that sectarianism is a continuing problem in Scottish society;
it is one of the ills that afflicts us. Let him accept that every member
across the chamber has the highest priority in tackling that and other
ills in Scottish society.

Villarreal still lead 2-0, game dying on its behind, reminiscent of routine SPL h/win for us against diddy opponents.

Racing just sprung offside vs a very flat back 4.

RRC @ 7.27

Completely agree. When anyone is stabbed or mugged or raped. it is NEVER reported as an "alleged" crime. I mean never. If you were the brief for the assailant, that is the language you would use.

In the Evening Times today, it's called an alleged assault. In the same paper there's a story about a woman being attacked. Yes you've guessed, that assault was NOT stated as an alleged attack, but as a fact.

In Lennon's case, we have witnesses like the doorman, the hospital staff, and those who saw Neil Lennon just before he was attacked.

In effect, the report implies that his report of an assault is at the very least less than accurate, and at worst perhaps contrived all together. The man's alleged (sorry) past is still being used to hound him. In none of the cases where he has been assaulted was there any evidence that he did anything wrong, except be a NI Catholic Celtic player who goes out for a pint.

The assumption in this use of the word "alleged" buys into the "Neil Lennon asks for it" theory that is just below the surface in this and so many other stories. The rationale is "Well how come it's always Lennon that gets involved in these situations. Never happens to other players, so it must be him looking for trouble when he gets pissed. What's he doing going out anyway, I mean that's just asking for it." You can guarantee that this type of defence will be mounted by the two assailants in this case. "It was just a bit of banter and he (Lennon) got angry, so what were we supposed to do. I mean Lennon's got previous for this sort of thing" AND it will be Findlay who will defend them, that is a guarantee too.

Scottish media hang your head.
On second thoughts how can you possibly do that when you've got it shoved up someone else's behind, so just........well fill in the blanks yourselves.
HH

villarreal pinging loads of balls from CM area through CB and FB positions for wide runners to get in behind.

OMG I feel a migraine coming on............

RRC @ 7.27

It's a legal thing. All crimes are "alleged" until they've been proven in a court of law. Newspaper have to careful they are not accused of prejudicing the trial by suggesting a person's guilt before trial.

Always despised that Thistle fans' chant 'Hello, hello how do you do'. The line about the Pope is sectarian, no matter the overall point of the song. Ah, the cuddly, fluffy Jags fans. Scoff.

Just to let you all know,

I have engineered the worldlines so that I become Scottish First Minister in Apr 2010. My first point of business is passing employment regulation 1888 that allows all tims to be granted timleave on matchdays. Paid of course, and not to be taken from annual leave entitlement.

Nakagod, if we parachute into the UEFA I will expect us to win it considering how poor it was last season with the exception of Zenit. I think we will be in the last 16 of the CL though, but I will not castigate WGS if we parachute although his team selection and tactics against a Aalborg were not what they should have been (see I didn;t castigate him). Saying that though if we scored the penalty or Skoosh’s goal was not chalked off I would have had nothing to criticise. It is a thin line between success and failure in the big cup. dont curse the situation mhan :-)

northside_dweller,

the mhoaners about me hail from the east but there is one in particular whom I have challenged verbally a couple of times. He then stays quite for a while biting his tongue but just cannot help himself. Aiden McGeady still gets it every time he is on the ball and his tricks or passes do not lead to a goal. Sometimes i wish he would take up knitting.

Thistle are really trying to lose this one now.

Just seen the Brown goal for the first time, class finish.

The Green Brigade dont half go on a bit.

Take it from BBC coverage of TFOD with the Cardigan indulging in industrial language to rally the troops that the arrangement that Alistair is in charge for the diddy cups is now oot the windae

Oh it is so good to see the blog back to its wonderful normalness(sic).

Paul67

Did Celtic agree to this extension so early on in the season?

The Jags have been by far the better team for the last 30 mins. Live feed on the BBC website, for UK users. Under Football, rather than Comedy, confusingly.

Sir Paul

Good summation.

Howevahhh..

I must get my two bits in.

Donati... or.. the Return to Form or the Former Back-Slider.

I have mentioned this before, and I will continue to do so...

So get used to it... Dear Readers.

All I ask for, in a Celtic Player, is...

IMPROVEMENT... not only Improvement alone...

But....

Continuous and Constant and Consistent, IMPROVEMENT.

We are seeing that very thing occur, in the past Two displays of grit and goodness what else, from Master Brown..

Good Woik,kid. Keep it up.

And...

Georgie Bhoy... is on the IMPROVE of An IMPROVE or an IMPROVE!

Howevvah, he is soitenly a Special Case.

Yessirreee Boab...

Back to the Target of my thrust...

Massimo, turned in a very nice performance, last eve.. and if he proceeds in like vein... is definitively in the running for Fair Haired Bhoy status.

So... Three Cheers for, Massimo..

And if he keeps this up... improvement wise...

Then, I believe that he is Gonna Gie, Mr. Strachan..

a very big Headache.. in the Tea Party, Selection Stakes.

Although, I imagine a very Pleasant wan..(Whit?..ed)( Ah know.. but, whit kin a say?)

I believe the woid.. that would apply in modifying Mr. Strachan's strange condition ,should that problem occur..would be

Ambivalence?

Dire stuff at Firhill.Enjoyed my tea and toast though.

Brought back some memories (not the dire fitba) for me of standing, watching Celtic there in, must have been the 66/67 season (you historians can confirm or not!). Stevie Chalmers put through one on one with the Thistle keeper and missed. My eldest Brother then remarked " How are we gonna compete in Europe with forwards like that!"

TFS clear as a bell on 99 minutes followed by No Surrender

That song just given an airing at Firhill. Away fans, one assumes.

Famine Song loud and clear at Firhill now. Commentator "both sets of fans really getting into this cup tie now".

TFOS being sung over in FIRHILL. Are there a lot of Irish in the Thistle fanbase? Thistle fans booing them down though. Now come the sectarian bigoted filth. They are really feeling threatened now in this game.

Is it me or do BBC turn the crowd sound down every time the unwashed start on their tunes. Now TFS getting it big time for a couple of bars then it disappears.

Commentator of course praises the fans foor getting involved!

I thought donati had a decent game last night. As did kojo's favourite player hinkel. I think Strachan has spoke to them in training and told them the secret tactical move of not finding a team mate with a pass so that the opposition cant read our game. I may be wrong though.

Unlucky Thistle – they certainly didn't look like lower league opposition tonight.
Still, on the bright side, the extra time might bring back memories of fixture congestion for TFOD players. How would they cope with that?....

Sportscene luxuriating in the very existence of Mendes , frankly apart from the goal he was anonymous for over an hour

At one point the commentators compared Kris Boyd to Marco van Basten! You would think you were watching Barcelona given the guff they were spouting tonight. It is always good to see Nacho Novo booed off the park, isn't it?

Kojo,
This is the team for away wins in Europe. If you have an insurance policy (Crosas) behind Brown he becomes a human nuclear bomb, absolutely unplayable, he will be our 12th man abroad. Corsas keeps the play moving, McGeadie and Maloney open the play up for the gorgeous one to become a hero, honestly, I see it fae the windae, so it must be true.

The relevant rule on yellow for leaving the field of play is Law 12, which states (amongst other things):

A player is cautioned and shown the yellow card if he deliberately leaves the field of play without the referee’s permission.

Conclusion?

Without any of us seeing it, super Pedro scored his super goal, texted Dr Conroy "can I leave the field of play Dr Mike?", got a reply saying "Course you can super Pedro, knock yourself out."

End of mystery.

Was tonight the first signs of problems for Rangers upfront?
And in defence?
Midfield? They should enjoy the football from Mendez before the heavy pitches render him useless.

hoopla,
Easy, McGeadie on the left because Malony plays on the right, after 65/70mins you bring on Naka to play left, switch MaGeadie to the right and both play the early ball into the box for Samaras. Camon think about it.

Kojo,
The viewfaethewindae sugests not.

Walter fears tri-trophy exhaustion

Walter Smith's Rangers kicked off the defense of their CIS trophy in the same bulldoggish fashion that nearly saw them winning the UEFA cup last season. Yet in a game that was bereft of the sort of result which saw them place four past their other Glasgow counterparts - Celtic, we were allowed to gaze upon the splendour that is Mendes. It would only be fitting that the Rangers fans immediately dropped their short-held love of Nacho Novo, in light of his crapness, and conversely in light of the fact that mendes has scored 2 goals for Rangers - one of which was a screamer - embrace the 'hammer of the jags!'

The ever-wise manager proffers caution in stead of a gold rush of expectation - 'Obviously, we won.'

We, we few, we human frail and sometimes forgotten few can only sit, in light of tonights result and not forgetting the Celtic result, and wonder what might be in this magical CIS competition?

Dorrell Disease

PF
I thought the ref was reluctant to issue the yellow card tonight and had no real choice with the two he did show. I felt that he ignored the rule for Mendes because he felt he did have a choice. I wish other ref`s would do likewise.

The Token Tim on September 24, 2008 6:03 PM,

55,000 of us singing the new Celtic/St Pauli song v Man Utd and Villareal would indeed be fantastic and not to far from becoming a reality.

I was in Lisbon for the CL game against Benfica a couple of years ago and recall an impressive sounding chant from the home fans where one end of the stadium starts, there is a brief pause followed by the opposite end of the stadiums response, another pause, and the chant goes back and forth from one end to the other for a while. Sounded great and would be ideal for Paradise.

Anyway, this recent outbreak of positivity and goals has been great.

Long may it continue,
Celt33

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear, friend... PF Ayr.

I made an error...which I shall now most shamefacedly correct..

Hinkel did remain the whole game..

That, error really does have no bearing on the main point of my commentary...

Which is ...

I believe that The Celtic Team did not show any upsurge in their Tempo.. when Massimo was withdrawn.

and if you my friend, did also ...see the game...

I am surprised that you continue to disparage the Performance of Massimo.

An honest opinion or a neutral one, by even a casual observer to last night's top performance, By Celtic... and as a TEAM..

Would agree with me...

That, Massimo had a productive and very acceptable part to play in our Team's Superior Display.

He was soitenly not a passenger.

Kojo.
yer pal...who likes ye.

Kojo,

Dear friend,

I fear that I have to respond to your observations regarding Donati and Hinkel.

Few are the times we disagree. This being one of those occasions. Your defence of 2 of the inferior players in our squad has me currently perplexed. You are a bright bhoy Kojo. Why the passion in your belief of obvious inferiority? If it was a business decision, how long would you curtail your "sacking meeting"?(sic).

I remember, long ago your first response to me regarding communicating opposing(sic) opinions on this fine meeting place of minds. I remember clearly, your insistence of how one should express, even in minority, their true feelings of all they hold dear in the Celtic world at the expense of the majority disagreeing.

I feel, no, I belive Kojo that you are the minority in your last summation. Donati, who you have admirably defended does not conform to the present vision of our 3IAR manager. Even though he tries.

Donati, dear Kojo, will not be picked for Villareal. He will not be picked for SPL games. His domain this 08/09 season will be in the guise of our CO-OP Cup run.

I hate to bring it to your attention. I hope you relieve yourself from your Donati'ism. Kojo, dear friend, his time has come and gone. Quality will always win through Kojo. Massimo, I am afraid to say, does not possess the required quality of a Celtic midfield thoroughbred.

Your, pet frustration hinkel, imo still has another 8 months left to convince though. On this last statement, I await a hefty response on your part.

Hail Hail

viewfae -

Ah it sounds so simple, but I feel Shaun plays rather well cutting inside from the left, and I think Aiden is stronger on the right wing - he's looked great out there in international games.

But I do like yr Naka-on-after-an-hour-or-so, and then Aiden switching wings, to sow the seeds of utter consternation and discomfiture... hmmm...

I should also add, I feel that Lee Naylor somehow plays better with Shaun rather than Aiden on his wing...

Northside dweller

Watch for Big Billy missing his penalty. One of the worst you are likely to see as far as I can remember. Couldn't understand why he took it but thought at the time it was some kind of gesture after the coin tossing episode in 1970.

I still cant figure it out.

hoopla,
The early baw, that's the man, watch our midfield notch up the goals as they flood in from the centre. Honestly we could have one of the best midfields in Europe, a know it clear as day faethewindae

First thanks to WG/WG Jnr and their motley crew of Wishaw Tims for the lift into Parkhead (wot no NAFOS no SOAL ? ...catch up with the missing members of the tesser trio in the near future)some observations from my seat in the jock stein lower last night: Pleased to see Gordon Strachan put out a strong team including Boruc, Sammaras, Hinkel, Hartley and Naylor who could easily have been rest.... The CIS is the one trophy gordon is yet to win and the strong bench with JVOH, Caldwell and Brown is another indication of intent,,,,,gordon strachan wants to win every trophy this season.....the goal celebrations also confirmed the great tema spirit which gordon sees each day on the training ground
a good display especially in the second half with great atmosphere created by the green brigade, Glen Loovens looked very composed and comfortable on the ball, always looked to play the pass to colleague in space, took his goal well and I was pleased to see him marshalling the defence in addition to his assist for the 2nd goal Glen started a great move in the second half and even stayed up to receive return pass which was not forthcoming....hope Glen keeps his form into the aberdeen game and if he continues to impress in training then he will give much needed competition and composure to our defence....could we finally have the confident. ball playing centre half we have sought for ages
Massimo Donati, even allowing for lack of match fitness in his 1st start failed to make the most of his opportunity with many misplaced passes ....it was no surprise that we were much more positive and more dynamic when scott brown came on in the second half....skoosh deserved his goal and could even have had a couple
IN THE FIRST HALF Aiden McGeady struggled somewhat on occaison taking on one man too many with a few misplaced passes perhaps he was trying too hard obviously anxious to make an impression HOWEVAH noticeably improved in second half having rediscovered his pace and confidence after several mazy runs at the start of the 2nd half...poor scott mcdonald tired hard but is obviously becoming more frustrated and anxious with each unfortunate miss...needs to relax a little more and not worry too much about the scoring exploits of the gallus samaras who is the man in form samaras' goals are also enhanced by the overall contribution he makes for the team(linking up well, battling back for possesion, always hungry for the ball and keen to get forward) a great team player.....the goal skippy scored at motherwell shows he still has the ability and the finish and i am sure his confidence will return perhaps he is suffering a natural reaction to sammy's good form but we have great competition upfront
Paul Caddis did well going forward (althought caught like a rabbit in headlights when played in by sammy in the first half) but with his size we would always be susceptible to the diagonal ball over the back which is why the experience of wilson and hinkel is preferred for the champions league....nice link up play between maloney, mcgeady and brown in the second half all of whom linked well with sammy who is a confident fulcrum of our attack
last but not least thank goodness sammy appears to have solved our penalty connundrum.....
lets hope we can maintain our form and confidence for the litmus tests against aberdeen and villareal in the coming week.... a clean sheet on saturday would provide essential confidence for tuesday against villareal
STANDING UP FOR THE 3-IAR CHAMPIONS but still wondering about the blank big screen :-(

Thanks for the info - could it be another who didnae make it at CP gets success elsewhere.

I used to work with a guy called Keith Sorbie who was the linesman at Pittodrie on the day WGS brought Virgo on as a sub and put him up front. You may remember Virgo putting the ball past the Dons keeper who was outside the box - but the keeper handled it. Ref (Charlie Richmond) consulted linesman and gave a free kick and a yellow card.

I asked keith why no red card - his explanation was we were 3-1 (i think) up , last minute of the game and it was also Adam Virgo so the issue was irrelevant as he would have missed anyway. At least that made me smile - by the way keith still does a lot of games - he was on the line sunday against Killie and he is a jambo.

UNEW 11.12

The CIS is the one trophy gordon is yet to win

Jimmy Johnstone (God Rest him) Sunday........

squire danaher - we dome it in wgs first season.

remember dion dublin scored in a 3-0.

zurawski scored...did he get 2??

if not, was maloney a scorer on the day???

Jinkysboy : Good story and made me laugh too.

However, it could have had serious consequences later had the league gone to goal difference.
A bit like the foul on Jan when we were beating Aberdeen heavily last season and the penalty wasn't awarded. The hacks had a laugh about the ref feeling sorry for Aberdeen.
It could have bitten us on the bum big time if results had been different on helicopter Thursday.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend... Nakaghod.

I will correct an error.. that has seemed to grow like Topsy..and it was initiated by Me, in my last submission regarding whether or not the Withdrawal of Hinkel and Massimo had any bearing on the consequent play.. plus or minus, of the remaining Celtic Team during the rest of the evening.

I made an error in intimating that HINKEL had been withdrawn..

Now that I have managed to get that part of the story, back on track...i will say this..

My opinion of Herr Hinkel has Nevah, Evah Changed..

I have always maintained that he was not performing as Advertised... I nave repeated this.. ad Nauseam ,since the German Foist appeared on the Scene.

In short or in long... I am not a fan of Herr Hinkel...

I do not say he is a bad player..what I do say is that he is slow of Limb and Thought.

I have no defense for Mr.Hinkel...

Howevahhh..

I am Defending the Italian ...

Again..

I was a fierce and torrid CRITIC, of Massimo.. all last Season .

There are legions of contributers of this very site, who can vouchsafe for that!

But, things do change..and opinions must also change with those changes.

I have seen that Massimo, is improving...is settling at last..to the more Boisterous and Scrappy type of Play that he has encountered in th S.P.L.

I am of the opinion that Massimo, is on the Improve..

and I am a sucker for an IMPROVING PLAYER..

Show me a Consistent Improvement... and I will always be a fan.

Masssimo, in his last Three Outings.. is a Changeling...

He gave a very good account of himself in last evenings game..

That is what I saw...

I put my past doubts and complaints behind me... when I see a Player is willing to battle back..

Yep, I liked what I saw in Mr. Donati, in his last game.

He is IMPROVING.

That is all I require to make me change my opinion.

An opinion must nevah be written in stone.

Kojo.
yer pal..who likes ye.

Lucky huns once again.

Famine song heard loud and clear once again.

I wonder if the SFA will ever take action and/or if UEFA will made the decision for them.

The guidance to referees in the laws of the game says the following about goal celebrations.

Leaving the field of play to celebrate a goal is not a cautionable offence in itself but it is essential that players return to the field of play as soon as possible.
Referees are expected to act in a preventative manner and to exercise common sense in dealing with the celebration of a goal.

The referee was right not to book Mendes. The referees who booked JVOH, Stan etc on the other hand.............

garygillespieshamstring

I made those exact points to Keith as well as the one about the Dons keeper being eligible for the next game and although this was not an issue at the time I cited how many occasions I see a pivotal player in a "wee team " get a red card and almost instantly realise they play the FOD the next game.

Ach its all just a masonic plot anyway and we just play the part of the downtrodden scum who have to learn our place in Scottish folklore.

Jinkysbhoy,

Dont worry, they all even themselves out over the season, as the press were so quick to point out when we got a couple of correct decisions in our favour this season.

On the mendes celebration - does my memory serve me correct that JVOH was booked and as it was a second yellow given a red and also that kenny Miller also scored at Inverness a few weeks later (cup game I think) and as this was the end of yet another goal drought went into the supporters who were in the very close vicinity.

Would it not be interesting if Kenny finds the net in similar circs again and repeats his actions........

viewfae -

I share yr window-related optimism, midfieldwise.

Still remember Scotty Broon totally bossing Tolly Tymo throughout that Scotland game.

And so it has been a consternation to myself, with players of that calibre, and the calibre of Naka, Aiden etc, that we have never quite got it all together in that area of the park. But there are strong signs now that this sad state of affairs is changing.

For me the key transformative factors have been -

Player who is strong on the left, giving Broon space to play on the right - Barry ("The Only Barry") Robson

Cultured player with good distribution playing between defence and midfield - thought it might be Donati, but it now looks like Crosas

Playing a 4-5-1 / 4-3-3

Return of the Shaun - This I did not see coming, because I felt attacking mid was an area that didn't need strengthening (unlike leftback ). But it has made a real difference. Well done Shaun, well done Gordon.

in fairness the beeb were the first media outlet to break rank over the famine song.

seems strange that it can be sung over their own airwaves and noone heard anyfink??

they seem to have the "heavies" in their favour forcing the people upset by this song to pay for the priviledge of hearing it.

wow!!

Kojo I am confused by your erroneous observations if you do live in the USA how did you manage to see the game as i believe channel 67 and CQN both suffered failures last night,,,, those of us who witnessed FIRST HAND scott brown's excellent 3rd goal and the fine interplay between aiden, maloney, brown and samaras in the second half will testify that celtic's forward momentum was much improved when skoosh replaced donati soon after half time (1-0 half time and 3-0 second half provide further evidence to the improvement in our play after massimo failed to make the most of his opportunity in the 1st half). Don't get me wrong I am well aware that donati was one of our key performers in the CL last season and i had high expectations that he would step up to the plate last night but I was disappointed that don donati's passing was sadly short on many occaisions against lower league opposition....don donati will remain a squad player but really needs to grasp his next opportunity is he is to be chosen ahead of other more consistent performers....especially as our midfield options are the most competitive in the entire squad (nakamura, maloney, mcgeady, brown, hartley, robson, donati, caddis, mizuno....mccourt needs the best part of a full season in the reserves to get required consistency and fitness levels before he can even be considered for the 1st team hutchinson, mcgowan and sheridan are more likley to appear on the bench before derrys recent export)

garygillespieshamstring

Oh yeah - that ole chestnut.

Remind me - did that rational also apply to the Celtic lose the league on last day 2003 (UEFA Cup Run) against the wheels falling off the quad last season !!!!!!!!!! Methinks not.

isnt it fortunate that we have grown to sort of take this stuff on the chin , dust ourselves down and start all over again (think there was a wee tune in my head there)
