Celtic 4-2 Hibernian, SPL, 25 October 2008

| | Comments (635)
Celtic - Hibs games have provided excellent entertainment in recent seasons and today's was no different.

Celtic opened well, with the majority of possession and territorial advantage but it was Hibs who created the best chances, including a deflected shot that Artur Boruc did well to get a hand to.

On 29 minutes Steven Fletcher was sent clear with only Boruc to beat but the ball bounced off him to safety.  This was to prove costly as within two minutes Stephen McManus opened the scoring with a shot direct from a poorly defended corner kick.

Celtic were two goals up four minutes later when Scott McDonald dummied a McManus pass sending Cillian Sheridan clear.  The young Irishman took the ball round Mc-Kalambay in the Hibs goal and shot into the empty net.

At this stage it looked to be a matter of how many Celtic would win by, however, a few minutes before half time Boruc could not prevent Hibs second deflected shot of the afternoon from passing him.

Five minutes into the second half Hibs were level when Colin Nish sent a first-time cross between the Celtic defence and goalkeeper for Fletcher to score.

Glenn Loovens replaced McManus at half time and, in his best performance for Celtic so far, put Celtic back into the lead with 14 minutes remaining with header direct from a corner, his second goal in two league games.

Scott Brown completed the scoring after 82 minutes with a fine left-foot drive from the edge of the box, a goal which must have done his confidence good, as he finished the game playing his best football of the season.

Podium??

Martin42,
I'm standing up for you :)))

gsu

Well a credibile second, and not a sniff of Oldtim or Jinksybhoy.

Martin.

Likewise, Greensideup

and we may w#as well include, Tim in the Chamber,

Martin.

Funny moment there on 606- A listener is trying to make an analogy about football clubs being re-branded. He asks Alan Green who he supports-
"Linfield FC"
"Well then, imagine they were renamed 'Shamrock Rovers'"
Cue much spluttering, before a strangled "I don't think that's likely"

Kojo, just in case you missed it from the last thread

Great result the day, the team worked hard especially in the second half. Congrats to the youngster Cillian well done!

Skoosh and Loovens terrific goals!

A question for Kojo, are you in Vegas? If so I'll be there Nov13-17, if you care to meet for a pint.

gsu
letmeknowCSC

Paul, it was a terrific finish from Cillian, it is what he was needing a good run out and the confidence of scoring today.

He looks like the "real deal"

gsu

Third??... not bad for a first try.

On today's game.. it was nice to see both Loovens and Brown on the score sheet again...and all in all another good weekend.

Paul67:
Looking forward to the Killie game....
Do you agree that WGS should make sure the game is won prior to bringing on some of the fringe players...and like myself do you think we have a great chance of the domestic treble this season?

Let it be know:

From this day hence Loovens will be know as Napper.

Let it be know:

From this day hence Loovens will be know as Napper.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend...Greensideup.

I am living in Vegas, at this time.

Unfortunately, I shall not be available for a Drinky Pooh, with you,my friend.

Would like to, but it is just one of those things.

Kojo.
yer pal.. who likes ye.

benjybhoy,

does big Glen like his sleep?

coat on...

gsu

Nae bother Kojo,
not even sorted the hotel yet just the flights

all the best!

gsu

Kojo,

Napper, well I have not heard or used that name for such a long time.

I think thre original napper was James Napper Tandy, an Irish patriot and colleague of Wolfe Tonne.

I know the name is common in the pub trade, a lot of them being called Napper Tandy, and styled as an Irish bar.

Martin.

Been reading but unable to post over the past couple of days. Stuck in a hotel in Darlington tonight and got an internet connection - great stuff!!

Paul67, Martin42 - my thoughts were with you the other day. Having lost my Dad just 15 months ago I know what a bittersweet day it must have been for you - that neverending feeling of loss but also precious memories of a life lived. Hope the day was not too sad for you.

Sounds like a good battling performance today, one which helps championships to be won. Great to see Skoosh getting on the scoresheet again, and Napper - can't wait to see the goals!

Also heard that the other mob got a dubious penalty and an offside goal - trouble in the stands too I was told - any news on that?

Your old man's a genius :-)

fergus slayed the blues ,

i think Deek is a certainty to score this afternoon. (I'm not correcting your bit where you write tomorrow, it's just that i'm in work until 7am & Saturday will be well on by the time i get home. Boo hoo.)

I was saying to my dad & my Bhoy earlier that both Miller & Mulgrew scored 2 against us & i hope wee Deek doesn't do likewise. My old man replied, saying if they score 2, we'll score 4. I'll settle for 3 points, no worries.

Hail Hail

bhoys

hoped the 5's went well today
as for the game caldo, hartley, brown and hinkel superb and cillian took his goal well and loovens did well when he came on, paddy got a great reception

marcellacsc

Kojo here's a question for you down Vegas way!

I hear Craps is the game to play, for it allows you the best chance on the day!

any thoughts?

gsu

Boltonboy,

Thanks.

The caring and warmth of the CQNfraternity never ceases to amaze and humble me.

We are a credit to our upbringing and culture.

Martin.

Sir Paul

I have struggled with this decision.. but, today's performance.. sliced the ham...

I am Happy to Announce that Scott Brown, has now been invited to join "Kojo's Fair Haired Bhoys"

That makes, .. Three... Jvoh, Gary and Now Scott..

Hey! We are gettin' there!

Congratulations, Scott......it looked for a while that you were going to let down, Mr. Strachan, because of the high number of desultory games that you were turning in.

Howevahhhhh..

Since the Start of this Season you have gone from so,so, to O.k. , To Bettah.. tae Best!

And the Day... It Wiz the Best Performance that I have seen ye pit in,in a Celtic Joisey...sure, ye gave the ba' away a few times.. but,all wiz well that ended well..
And that Goal ye scored,pal..?

It wiz a Rasper!

And I am very partial tae, Raspers...

Ye Hit the Ba' like ye HATED IT...!

That's the stuff that exciting goals are made o'!

Welcome,kid... ye deserve the Honor!

Kojo.

kikinthenakas,

Strange how people see things so differently, I thought Gary Caldwell had his shakiest game for months today, which, rather than being meant as a criticism, is more an observation of how well he's played over the past few months.

Enjoyed the game today, which is norm when the Hibees come to town these days. I thought Scott Brown and Andreas Hinkel were our stand out performers, as and Paul mentinoed, Glen Loovens turned in his best performance in the hoops to date.

goals from today

NapperandSkoosh"

GD

strange days.....thought that barry was poor but for them fletcher was terrific and deek missing
thought caldo always tried to play from the back,
got a right soaking masel tho!!

Kojo - that's great to read. During the close season, once Scott's sister had died, many were saying that they then understood why his performances had not been as anticipated. At that time I asked that they also cut Scott a bit of slack for a time this season too as I know just how much time it can take to get over a loss such as he has experienced. I'm glad Gordon has persevered with Scott, who is, in my opionion, soon to prove beyond doubt why we signed him.

Martin42 - it is solely down to the efforts of your son that I am even able to convey my thoughts to you. The thanks are due to him, not me. I am proud and privileged to be a member of the best blog on the planet!!!

Boltonbhoy,

The Huns' penalty was fair (incredibly stupid challenge by the Hamilton defender), but Boydichenko was a clear yard offside at the crucial second goal. Linesman right in line too. Scandalous.

Didn't hear about trouble in stands- although I think they tailored the awful Famine Song specially for James McCarthy.

Classy bunch.

They were terrible today, but the conditions were horrendous. not sure if we would have looked much better.

this one may come back to haunt me but there ain't much thas has not ..

take a look at Loovens in his first game every ball that came off him went to a hooped midfield body.

I have not had the pleasure of seeing much of the chap mind.

Congratulations to all that made it this morning.
Wish I could have attended.

Boltonbhoy,
you hit hit nail on the head "I'm glad Gordon has persevered with Scott, who is, in my opionion, soon to prove beyond doubt why we signed him."

and some people question GS's man management skills. It is clear that SB must have been going through a real rough time and may
be still, but Gordon Stracha has mad it clear you don't give up on family!

gsu

should be opinion, apologies Boltonbhoy

gsu

Thanks for the info ItaliaBhoy.

greensideup - glad someone else can see it!

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. Greensideup.

Who evah tole ye that,pal.. sure knew his onions.

No questions.. Craps is, or are, ... the very fairest game, regarding the odds.

The Player in this game... actually squeezes a few percentage points, on the plus side, over the Hoose.

I am an Inveterate Craps Aficionado.

That sounds a good title, but it disnae amount tae a hill of beans..

Let's jist say.. I play the Game, and I like the Game.. and I sometimes Win at the Game.

If you are a rank beginner, then Craps is for you, pal.

The Mair ye know..aboot Percentages..and Ah know a loat.. the mair ye get confused.. fur ye furget ..

that although, according tae the stats.. the Number7 has the greatest chance to fa'.. 1-6,2-5,3-4,6-1,5-2,4-3..

It disnae always woik , according tae Hoyle!

Although, I have seen a gal.. on her come out roll... throw...8 passes o' Sevens.. again...sometimes, naebody, at the table kin throw a come oot Seven fur Two Roons of the Table.

So...

What is the secret..?

Ah Tell ye, this Pal...

It is pure unadulterated, LUCK!

That's where the Tyro comes in.

Play yer hunches... and Pray a Loat!

Actually, that is whit ah dae, Maist o' the time, anyway!

And..it diz woik.. well, now and then and once in a while.. hey.. whit can ah tell ye?

Go Ahead, and play like ye meant it.. fur, whit is a Necessary adjunct tae Winning is this.. and in this ah am deadly serious,pal..

One Must Always have a POSITIVE ATTITUDE, when Gambling in any type of Game..

One must play like they HATE the Guy Next tae Him or the Gal..although,it is ayeways tougher tae hate a Wumman..

In Craps, one must Hate and Detest the Stickman and the Box Man.. and the Floor Person.. and the Cock Tail Waitress..

Hate, Hate, Hate as ye throw the Dice!

So...

Follow those instructions tae the Letter...

Play yer Hunches, Have Postitive Demeanour tae the Game..

And Darn well Hate Everyboady that ye see...

and..

Then... I believe ye hiv a slim chance o gettin' oot o' the game still wearing yer shirt!

Kojo.
yer pal.. who is only HAUF KIDDING..a loat o' that Advice is Pukkah!

Listening to RC on the way home from the game, I heard some comments about PMcC. Andy Walker said he was on for 15 or 20min and did nothing, had a couple of touches. He came on in the 87min and, with injury time, had 6mins on the pitch. In that very short time he slid a beautiful pass through to CS, turned well outside the box whilst delivering a beautiful cross and had a shot on goals which was deflected wide, albeit I don't think it was going in. Was AW at the game???
Also, there is a new campaign by the huns to turn PMcC into a joke figure and to mock and deride him. They did their best at a recent U21 game to slaughter him, but after one beautiful feint, which sent 2 clod hopper huns into one another, they soon shut up.
He needs games to build up his fitness and confidence, but,for the money we paid for him, he is worth the risk.
Loovens and GC at the back for anyone?

Still listening to Radio 5.

Could swear there was just a CQNer calling in.

Excellent points hammered home on the differences between our fans and theirs, as most recently evidenced in Manchester. Green, the chump, tried to get the guy wound up over the whistling during YNWA. Our man just laughed, explained it was not personal and only to be expected.

We should all vow to do something like that every week.... It could be like Fight Club.

Still trying to get warm after the 5's this morning, however this was a MASSIVE result, injury ravaged/rubbish conditions/Euro hangover all conspired for us to drop points today but we tried to play football and we were rewarded.

It was unfortunate that both their goals came from robsons side (not overly criticising as he is playing out of position), but on the plus side many of our oft maligned players had good performances today, Hinkel, Loovens, Skippy and Brown.

This had freak defeat all over it and we won with panache, the celtic way.

Quizzler

First Rule.

What happened to McManus at half time??

WGS

he found his position ?

Well done to whoever got this together. Some great memories in there..

How good was John Innes before Kick off.
The best pre match act in recent times!

Bourne and Whitedog,

Watch the first goal tonight, i looked straight at our bench when it went in and they were not happy. A guy behind me blames Robson, who let's be hones got done for the second goal and had a hard time today filling in at left back. However, look at the first goal when Robson slipped and got caught under the ball, our centre half should have been covering Robson backs off instead going to meet the ball and provide the cover. He hesitated which allowed the ball to go to Flecther who then cut inside him and unleashed the shot.

And before anybody thinkd i'm tsking a pot shot at Mick yet again.
Caldwell was out of sorts today as well on the right hand side, but Hinkel played well and done a lot of covering. Everytime a goal is lost by us down the left, it must be like a dagger in th heart for PL. Should have been sorted in the summer. If it is not sorted in January, serious questions should be asked. People tend forget Robson doing a job for the team, as our our left back is terribly poor.

Just sat down and quickly read back to see who won the 5s but cant find it. Anyone help?

I enjoyed the game today very much which surprised me as I thought the conditions would have spoilt it.

Gordon_J from last thread it was me that ask for someoen to ask Danny the question. Thanks.

WGS. I dont think if Stephen was to draw the lottery tonight and you had the winning ticket you would still not like him.

Kojo, thanks for the advice, craps it is for this novice

gsu

WGS

Stephen McManus blows more than he smokes

never saw the game today though.

WGS, that's a fair reading of hibs first goal today. I hate slagging Mick, as he's the sort that will stand in front of a train for the team, but I don't think he's been the same player since being made captain. And for what it's worth, it always seems to me that Caldo acts as the captain without the armband.

But Robson was culpable in the build up to the goal. OK he slips at the end but he let his man get away from him in the first instance. For the second goal, he got muscled out. If it had been Naylor, he would have got pelters. Is O'Dea next for a shot?

That's the negatives. Well done Broonie, really starting to look like the player we know he can be and want him to be, just hope he keeps it up. Hinkel a wee bit better today, but still a lot to prove. Loovens eventually played in his proper position, and dare I say looked the part - after he came on Hibs got very little change from the centre.

And well done Sheridan. He's probably got the next few games to try and cement a position in the first team squad, although he'll take a back seat when Sam and Jan are back. Think Killen's celtic career might be over though if he's down to seventh or eighth choice striker.

WGS

hinkel played like a proper full back something of a novelty in recent weeks for us
left and right.

robson is not the answer very much an experiment, mcmanus definately took an injury.
you are right about caldwell, he had new contract itis.

i'd rest ta fare few and play more of a fringe side on wednesday, would like to see
paddy mccourt get a start and plug away with sheridan

greenlion 2,

:) :) fair point as i'm always giving him a pounding. Nothing personal, i just don't rate him as a player, and in my view if he wasn't captain he'd be out. Problem is he knows he's un droppable and instead of talking about other players like Novo and Riordan.

Feck me, instead backing Novo for Scotland, he should kept his mouth shut and maybe turned the question and say why the big deal and campaign with Novo for Scotland, when his own team mate and a 17 year old are getting pillered from the very same people for chossing another country through their grandparents.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend .. .Bournesouprecipe.

I like Sheridan...

Howevahhhhhhhhhh

I like Big Ben, a wholelotta Bettah!

Again, Mr.Strachan is being dilatory in his thinkin.

Look..

We have an opening.. mebbe Two...for a New addition to oor Striker Pool..

Why no, now take advantage of the situation.. and find out..which of the Two Kids, looks like he is ready?

Sheridan, looked the part, today..fine..

Next game..it makes sense to see give Big Ben a shot.

Then, we wull hiv an idea of who is who in Wonderland.

If it wiz up tae me, I would play Big Ben, as much as I could..

I believe this young man can do the job.

He is nae shrinking Violet..and he can shoot and has lots of tools.

Let's give Big Ben and Master Conroy and Master Caddis, all, a shot at the Chair-O-Planes.. and see how they fly!

Kojo.
yer pal..who likes ye.

Evenin' all

Just to say that we (7 is the Magic Number) really enjoyed taking part in the 5's today.
We got to the semi's only to be beaten fair and square by the eventual runners-up, Shut up Michael.

Highlight of the day for me has to be the red card I received from Kenny Clark during our 5-2 QF win over last year's winners (Pulse8)! After being upended by a pretty meaty slide (illegal in 5-a-sides) tackle, I remonstrated with Mr Clark about the robustness of the challenge, upon where he pointed out to me that he had played advantage and we had actually scored to go 4-2 in front, then sent me packing! Spoke to him after though and he was a gent.

Paul

Good to meet you, we'll have that pint in BB's one day soon.

Blantyrekev

Well done organising and the matches and to all the others who put a lot into the day to make it work, thanks a million.

We'll be back next year to progress onto the final and hopefully through to Europe.

Hail Hail one and all

craggy island gaa (apps 4, goals 4, yellow cards 0, red cards 1)

The SFA bigwig said, after an unbelievable linesman decision at Pittodrie in August not to help the huns to a win, for once:

"You could have a policy like tennis, where managers are allowed two challenges per game to the video referee."

What has the great man said, after Berbatov's two goals on Tuesday and Boyd's second today?

1. "You could have a policy like tennis, where managers are allowed two challenges per game to the video referee."

2. "These things even themselves out over a season."

d. "Me and Arsene Wenger didn't see any of these incidents, so we didnae"

WGS I think he is a good player but never really had a left back to play beside and I think he ends up being exposed a lot due to not knowing whether to go or not. He did not start the season well but since the Villareal game I think he has settled down and got back to his game. He is not a superstar but he is a player who has been picked for his country under thae last 3 managers and also been a mainstay in our 3 in a row/ 2 last 16s team.

I keep bringing up the night we played Milan when Kaka scored in extra time. The next day all the Italians spoke about was Stephen.

I dont like football playing center halves but yet again he can ping the ball forward to players as has been shown today a few times and over the last few weeks. He scores a good percentage of goals as well.

In the big games he plays better and on Tuesday I would say he was our best performer. My mates all thought Gary but then again its all about opinions.

On the media front I dont envy him his role. He was obviously asked the question and if he said no he would have been dragged over the coals.

Let me ask you a question. Where you happy with the guy who was voted our greatest ever captain when he criticised Artur in the press last year? I was not and he has said a few things about us in the past which im not happy with.

Look back on how Stephen was when Tommy died and see how he represented the club then.

Apologies for a long reply but I think he is a player who is an easy target as he came through the system which seems to be a no no for a lot of fans who then go onto say we dont play enough youth players.

Alright ghuys

Paul - I was intending to pop in at the 5's today as I have clothes for the kids in Malawi. Due to work I couldn't make it. Finished late and got into the game when it was 2-2 and as I was already soaked the weather didn't bother me! It was all Celtic from what I seen. Great result. Hartley Loovens and Sheridan were good. Brown - Great finish and his run from midfield is what I want to see more of. Forget the snarling, get stuck in like you did in the second half. Tackle with your feet and body - not eyes and head. Keep improving young man, you've got it. My man of the second half.

Hartley would be in my team every week - he adds a lot to us. I dont subscribe to this limited player theory, I remember people said that about PL.

I Like the look of Sheridan, like a few have said more games.

Anyway.... I'm waffling now. How can I get the clothes to you / the charity??

Hail Hail

greenlion2,

Sorry, couldn't remember who had asked the question. But it was a good and an enjoyable answer from the great man!

Kojo

totally agree with your synopsis

when sammy went out injured after jvoh

most folk thought ben was in line before cillian

including ben who wrote as much on his icons blog

the cis cup is very much the fourth tournament, it'll be a long hard

season ahead give the bhoys and fringe players a chance

hail hail

Greenlion 2,

No I disagreed with Billy as well and also his comments about the Lennon attack. 100% behind you on that one mate.

You lot are brave/mental to have braved that weather for the fives.

Pleased with Celtic today, horrible weather never makes for good football, but glad to see Scott Brown continuing to prove his doubters wrong. Though Loovens playing on the left side of defence was infinitely preferable to anywhere else we've seen him.

IS THERE A HIGHLIGHTS PROGRAM ON THE TELLY IN SCOTLAND TONIGHT OF OUR GAME

oneantonrogan

That was the closest thing to horizontal rain that I've seen this mornin'!
We were warming up and one of the lads kicked the ball only to see it stop about 10 yards away and blow straight back to him! Ye cannae teach that kind of thing...

soggy island gaa

Greenlion2

Very well said about Mick. I think he has the potential to be a rock. I do think he was given the captaincy a bit early though, age wise. We need a leader. Not someone who is learning to be a leader.

Saying that though. I firmly believe he will become a very good leader - if that makes sense?

HAil HAil

craggy island, Kirk Broadfoot took a throw-in at New Douglas Park at lunchtime which blew back out of the park before it got to a team-mate.

whaddya mean not being able to find the pitch with a throw-in is typical of Broadfoot?

Craggy who won the 5's.

WGS I agree with you on Billy. For a guy who is still making good money due to playing for us. He still sticks it to us on a regular basis for the media penny.

On another thread I was listening to the radio the other night and they were discussing confidentiality clauses in players contracts like we were criticised for Bobo's. Seemingly its all the rage down south as when players move they are still being paid on a lot of occasions by the clubs they are leaving.

I remember us being criticised before on rolling contracts to find out that a lot of other forward looking teams (and even the huns) do the same.

Chip on my shoulder no.

Kojo
Agree about Ben. I was surprised to see CS start before him. Ben has been playing well in the U21's, and I think he would offer more than CS at the moment. I read on here recently that he is overweight from people viewing him on the telly. I think there is a difference between being overweight and those who have a strong upper torso. Ben is of the latter. SMcD is of the former, imho.

Can I ask. Does anybody , apart from posters on here, call Scott Brown, Skoosh?
I've heard his teammates refer to him as, "Broony". Not very imaginative I know.
But where did Skoosh come from?

Greensideup, I had actually just observed that Cillian and Scott didn’t look like a partnership when they linked for that cracking goal.

tim in the chamber, the domestic treble; hmmm.

I think we will win the league, yet another important one, but I’ve seen a lot of good/great Celtic teams but very few trebles. The one thing we have now is options who are able to contribute at a high level: we brought on Maloney on Tuesday and then Aiden today, for example.

Yes, make sure the game is won before experimenting.

Boltonbhoy, cheers.

Kikinthenakas, the fives were a great success, but I’ll write more on that on Monday.

Kojo, Scott Brown played much better after his goal than before; perhaps confidence is needed.

mb1964, I commented on the “15 or 20 minutes” myself.

Big Chris, aye, still cold.

GL2, Il Verdiblanco (sp) won the fives.

craggy island gaa, good to meet you too, Kenny Clark was first class today, what a voice!

larssonSE7EN, yes, Hartley was good today.

What a save from Boruc in the first half!
Possibly the best I've seen.

can I direct the attention of anyone interested in ending the singing of The Famine Song to post #4 at

http://kerrydalestreet.co.uk/topic/8030513/1/#new

time to crank things up a notch

Anybody hear Ewen Cameron tonight about how some of the media are defending the Famine Song and writing about it? I wonder who they are? Interesting to see Celtic's reaction if they got wind of this!!

McCourt looked bloody good for his ten or so minutes. A right tidy player.
I heard the, "James McCarthy it's time to go home".
But the commentator said that that, and the whistles and boos, were a, "left-handed compliment"

I think CS's inclusion is down to being the only big Striker we have.

Cant agree on big Mick although he has played decent of late.

Thought Hinkel looked like a fullback today, Hartley was good too (never thought id say that) Brown too and Loovens when he came on. Robson, while sacrificing for the team was culpable, in part for the first and definately for the second, as GS says though he wont be judged for playing out of position.

Despite getting soaked it was a good day all round.

Barca 4 up after 25 minutes, scary

oneantonrogan

After the 5's we went for a quick pint before the match and saw the 2nd half of Hamilton-TFOD. Why didn't they wipe the camera lenses more often with all that rain?

Having said that, the Rearrangers players didn't look quite so ugly cos we couldn't make them out. They just looked like grotesque royal blue blobs.
So, uglier then.

ANY SCOTTISH FOOTBALL ON TV TONIGHT?

For what it's worth here are some views from today's game from someone who has been going to Celtic Park for 50 years. (as if that's relevant when it comes to opinions)

Stephen McManus was having an excellent game before he had to go off at half time injured. His passing was crisp, forward when he could, sidwways to Caldwell when nothing was on. He scored a good opening goal and his early long pass led to the second goal.

Glen Loovens was impressive. Has needed games but looked much more fit and sharp today. Possesses a tremendous spring and his heading power gave Celtic their crucial third goal.

Barry Robson is a tough character, very committed. He is not a left back though. Andy Hinkel looked good. Linked up well going forward but wee concern that Celtic lose a goal again at his back post. Artur was very assured throughout. His handling was first class despite the conditions. Brought off a magnificent save in the first half when he was going to his right, the shot was deflected and he somehow managed to get back and get a hand to it.

Shaun, Naka and Aiden( when he came on) seem to have gone off the boil a wee bit. Possibly the defending they've had to do in last 2 CL games has taken its toll. In contrast Paul Hartley, not unsurprisingly, looked fresh. His clever positional play was a feature and when it came to 50/50 he did not disappoint.

Scott Brown scored a good goal, an excellent low shot from 18 yards. ( At last a central midfielder shooting from distance) Before that however I thought he was toiling badly. In fairness to him he never hides and always gives his all. When he scored his goal all the outfield players raced to congratulate him which is an indication of how popular he must be in the dressing room. In the final 8 minutes he played very well. One lovely turn at the halfway line saw him racing towards the Hibs area only to shoot just wide.

Young Sheridan is raw, to say the least. Nevertheless he took his goal very well indeed and was willing to run with the ball down the wings. His presence was a boost for Scott McDonald who I thought had a trenendous all-round game today and in my opinion was the man of the match.

I know people will disagree with some or all of the above but it's just a view from the old traditional Celtic End.

Well done to the Celts today.

Fine Girl Y'Ar.

Paul

He could certainly consider a career in football management with that type of hair-dryer delivery.

He spoke to me straight after and said he had just played "the advantage of the year" for us!

I protested that he must have been mistaken as I was wearing a Celtic strip at the time ;-)

larssonSE7EN I agree with you on being young but everyone I know who has met him has said he is a great ambassador for us. We did not have mnay choices to put in at that time.

Paul cheers I thought maybe the Greenock bhoys may have done it in the rain.

On a major plus side I though Paddy looked really hungry for the ball today when he came on. He gave young Cillian a hard time when he did not put him in.

Need to go off line for a while to take money off the cubs on family fortunes.

Craggy Island. 8.54.

A good wee round up of your invovlement in the 5,s, you ghuys did well. You are a player no doubt, but I laffed when you were sent off and continued to debate it with all and sundry!!!

Well done to Davie and his team Shut up Michael, they were top notch. As a player meself BTW etc etc... I witnessed a first in over 40 years of playing... A guy playing 5,s in a PARKA!!!!!

The "Mason in the Black" was a brand new guy and was genuinely delighted to have taken part. Top Man Kenny Clark.

The obvious effort put in by Kev Des and Andy and their extended family was humbling and an extension of what our community is all about.

Tremendous effort by all.

Change the winners to Verdiblancos, not Shut up Michael. Ta

I'm think you're being a tad unfair on Mick. It's all about opinions of course - me - I really like the big guy both on and off the field. Furthermore I believe it speaks volumes for the mans chatacter that he has been unable to deal wothout whinging about the unfair criticism he has received.

As far as speaking to the press is concerned - what has he done wrong? He's club captain and country vice captain. He's asked questions and he answers them honestly and with no frills.

Yesterday he backed Novo's Scotland "application". No everyone's cup of tea but quite a few would take him.

Today he has said that Deek's not making it at Celtic was no-one's fault but his own. I don't know many who wouldn't agree with that. He speaks as he plays. With honesty, and bravery On the playing front - IMHO - he's playing well and a lot better than some are prepered to admit. Was arguably our best on Tuesday and on one occasion pinged a beautiful 50 yrad pass to Naka's (I think - possibly Aiden's) toes. If it had been Ronaldo the commentator's would have been creaming their jeans!!!

C'mon. Give the guy a break.

Lurgan. StandingupforMick. Again!!!

Good game, very exciting and Hibs can play, make no mistake about that, though they tired in the second half and Deek still looks like the lazy so and so some of us took him for after a while.

We were very fit looking. We always do, come to think of it. Thank you , Gregory Dupont. Who says francophilia is a sin?

On that point, is the monsiour in question the wee dark haired chap who was helping Gary Pendrey out with the cones and warm up routines pre match? And how hard a chap is wee skoosh to warm up in a t shirt and shorts in that monsoon?

I really like the chantin' too.

John Innes, the people's tenor, sang beautifully. The hairs on everyone's neck were up when he gave it the full Pavarotti on Nessun Dorma, even the Hibees were applauding ( suppose that Festival malarkey makes them more cultured than your average away fan). His version of YNWA was , albeit excellently performed, a little less of a hit being so faithful to the Carousel version ( Lemonette the IV asked why he was signing it all a wrong). Odd that we should get opera on the day I was wondering, pre match, whether the big fat bloke that's sells the hats and scarves outside the Springfield Vaults can shout so loudly because he's got an enormous chest. I'm sure my granny Molly passed some of that Celtic Mysticism on to m. If only could make it work for prctical things like the lottery or who's gong to win on November the 4th (GO-Bama!!!)

Barcelona are five to the good. Eto'o scored a hat-trick in the first 25 minutes. Almería are down to ten and it's not looking good for them.

Didn't want to post too much in case I interrupted baseball.

Did you ghuys find out the answer to the BIG question? Is Kenny Clark a Tim?

CQNers do it in the rain

nite bhoys, well done to all

Blindlemon

Never mind that, what about that bhoy with the T-shirt? We need more legal minds tackling that and one of yeez to come right out and say you'll handle the bhoy's appeal pro bono.

Did Kenny Clark have nothing to say about that?

Was no one asking the BIG questions?

Where was AndyCol or The Token Tim?

Unforgivable I know but in my post earlier I forgot to mention PMcC, a substitute today.

Volunteer McCourt marched on to the field in impressive style. In the short time he was involved in the fray he aquited himself admirably.

What a brilliant post. That's the reports I expect to read on the official site.

Excellent reading of the game.

It's very interesting what you say about Skippy - I didn't notice that but I'm very pleased to have noticed your comments.

The same can be said about the slant put on Paddy's debut. There are a lot of people who will believe walkers tale of events on radio clyde, when in truth, the reality of his debut was posted by someone on here earlier. And a very accurate post it was - very much like yours.

Celtic quick news indeed. Dont believe the mainstream hype HAIL HAIL

Fantastico! Arrived in Granada to-night(a lovely city...the Barca of Andalusia) and have just found an internet cafe to learn the score....just what we needed.

C´mon The Hoops.

Nospellcheckcsc

I didn't think mCdonald was that great myself.. Nice flick for the goal but i didn't think he was a standout. Sherdian's running off the ball and making runs was eyecatching from my point of view. He made some great runs but never got the ball.

Celtic_First, a good pal of mine is like Kenny, a legal beagle, and counts Kenny as a good pal and has always maintained that we are his "Club of choice"

Dont think he was asked today, but who knows??

WGS

An innocent question - do you actually attend games?

Celticlover

Saw your post asking about places near Granada to see the game but didn't know anyone so kept my mouth shut.

I hope you have a super trip.

Drink nothing but Ribera del Duero at table any time you can get it, even down there. But the fino at all other times is unbeatable.

The traditional dish of Granada is broad beans and ham. Hmmmm or Mmmmm? You decide.

All the best to you and Mary.

Keep us posted of your progress.

El,

Froze my footballs off. I got a cold as well.

I thought Brown, Hinkel, Hartley, Sheridan played well.
Never really happened for Naka today. Though Sheridan took his goal well. It was down at my end of the ground. He was really composed and finished well. A lot of people would have snatched at that chance It was first start. Though it was a composed finished.

See that? You mention 'pro bono' and all the lawyers vanish.

blah blah

Pro bono publico (usually shortened to pro bono) means "for the public good."

It's when lawyers work for nothing.

No, really. It is.

Honestly, I know it sounds absurd, but I'm serious!

Thoroughly enjoyed todays game even though sitting in block 404 in the upper north stand I was still being rained on by the horizontal rain.

I cannot understand why Scott brown got the fans vore via txt as man of the match today though. He did have a very good last 20 mins and looked like the player we paid 4M for in that period but prior to that he played as we have grown accustomed too this season. But it is a step in the right direction and my prediction from earlier in the season that Skoosh will come good this season is looking like a good bet.

Overall we pretty much controlled the game and I always felt we would win even at 2-2.

Cillian Sheridan played well throughout and took his goal with the calmness of a player with far greater experience than his 5 apearances. I thought Heartly had a good game and he would have been my pick for man of the match. Loovens looked a better player than I have seen of him of late and I like the way he tries to pick a spot for his headers at set plays adding another goal to his account today although the hibs defender on the post must be wondering how that one crept in. McManus also took his goal well and Skoosh's was an excellent strike.

Hibs first goal was a fluke shot going nowhere which took a BIG defelection but the ball was easily given away in the mid-field and the defensive farialties were once again on show in the build up to the shot that took the ricochette. Hibs second was just bad defending full stop.

we need to stop getting ourselves in the position were we have to score 3 or more goals to win a game though even though it does add to the excitement and the atmosphere in CP.

Hail Hail

TOINFINITYANDBEYOND-IN-A-ROW.

Interesting when our support sang “go home ya Huns” to the Hibs fans, then burst into a hearty “let the people sing”. Trying to tell them something? I think it also shows (what we all knew) the term Hun is far from bigoted when used by the Celtic support.

I heard that too on the way home from the game. Ewan McGregor himself is one of the apologists. He consistently did a Jimmy Sanderson all evening asking each and every caller if they were at the game today when the “James McCarthy, The Famines Over, Why Don’t You Go Home” (adding a new and personal racist dimension to the son) was sung by the REARS fans. When they replied no, I heard it on the radio or the TV while watching he, was dismissive of them saying they could have been mistaken as sometimes it is difficult to hear what exactly is being sung over the commentary. Then when a Hamilton fan came on who was at the game and explained exactly what the REARS fans were singing (detailed above) he said “If it was true, insinuating that the Hamilton fan was possibly lying, then it was wrong. I have no time for the racist apologist. All the while my respect for Mr Rough rose throughout as from start to finish he stated time and time again that it was wrong and racist while Cameron tried to fob him off.

Salve Guys:-
Great result today, did not see the game, therefore cannot comment on performances. This was a very tricky game but I was absolutely delighted with Ghordy having the cojones to play Cillian Sheridan ; this is what I want to se more of.. I have to admit to being a flip flopper regarding our manager, in my defence however I would say that upon his appointment I was very much in his camp. As I thought he had a decent grasp of tactics and above all would imbue regime of fitness in the team.. he has proved to be an enigmatic character in that for all the perspicacity he has demonstrated in his analysis of games as a TV pundit , when it has come to his de jour job he has for so long been content to persist with a very bland product and indeed at points to stifle up and coming talents.. I also have to say that this season I can pronounce myself to be happy that youth has been given it’s head and to good effect, Crossas Sherridan the occasional glimpse of caddis , I hope that this is an indicator that we are moving towards a younger and faster team. I also would like to ad a couple of observations viz::- young Macgowan ,; is ready now for first team football.
And lastly I’ve only been drinking beer for the last ½ hour and have a bottle of Aberlour 12 year old to do battle with now

PS the fishing season has now finished for me I suppose I had better get back to the bank now

Glad you're back. Thought you were keeping a very low profile this week for someone who works in Salford.

Your Manchester idea for CQN northwest England chapter for a Champions League game is a great one. Stick with it for the Aalborg away match. Even if it's only you and me and Celtic don't win, it will be a night to remember, even though Celtic will win.

Have to go and watch Pride against Prejudice with Mrs First. Colin Firth is in it.

craggy island gaa, aye, KC was also quite funny when news of the Rangers penalty came through.

Welcome Henry F.

SettinFreeTheBears,

He is right about Riordan I have seen myself at a tazi rank one night in the late hours of the morning with hangers on for company. It was a number of weeks before we played Milan in the San Siro. But my point it is not his place to highlight it. GS has kept a dignified response in all the time he was asked about Derek. Not once has he said anything when he could have.

I disagree with Novo. Are you telling me a guy that has 100% spanish blood not even and grandparentage like McGeady and McCarthy should be taken place of good up and coming players like Fletcher of Hibs? All he had to say was no comment.

I find it utterly amazing that the same people in the media pillar opne of our players and 17 year old for playing for Ireland yet when it comes down to bringing in a Spaniard to the Scotland squad, there is a campaign to get him in?

In certain situations you take the fifth. All you have to say is no comment, or i'm not discussing the issue. Novo for Scotland. Is he better than what we have got? PULL THE OTHER ONE!!

SettingFreeTheBears,

How would Stephen like it if someone that plays for Scotland or another club says soemthing like he's not that good a player. We find him the weakest link etc... etc..

Answer: He wouldn't like it. I wouldn't either.

There's no doubting that he's probably a cracking big man and good celtic man like us all and living the dream. Good on him i say. However, if we are talking about Celtic reaching the promise land of the last 8 are we going to do it with a McManus and Caldwell partnership? Me personally i don't think. There lies the problem for GS!!

Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur

WGS

Did you say the same about 3 in a row and the last 16 twice? Can't do it with SMcM and GC.

WGS

Did you read the article?

He did not highlight Riordan's inadequacies; he condemned him by what he did not say.

As for the Novo question. He was asked a "when did you stop beating your wife?" type question and he sidestepped it beautifully. The Celtic and, sometime, Scotland captain has no place in determining that Novo should not play for Scotland. He could only sow discord amongst players he would have to play alongside (Ferguson, Broadfoot etc;) if he spoke as a Celtic fan and said what you and I might say - "Novo, You must be joking me?"

Mick says "If the powers that be want him (Novo), I'll play with anyone deemed Scottish and it's no skin off my nose"- controversy avoided (except with some Celtic fans who expect him to express the Celtic fans' view on Scotland matters).

I would still not take it as gospel that Mick has not expressed private reservations to Burley or Smith but, if he has, it will have been done in a way that does not stoke controversy and does not harm either Celtic or Scotland.

I say again- read the article. Hugh McDonald is an entertaining read. Genuinely and deliberately funny.

Bloke_109,

Can't argue with that stat, however, if you honestly think we have one of the best centre half partnerships in Europe. Well that's your opinion. You got yours and i got mine.

The ewan guy has taken the "Celtic side" on the odd ocasion and roughy disagrees with him...it's just a format they think sells advertising.

I listened t them the night the news broke about the Irish diplomat complaining about TFS...the ewan guy seemed genuinely disgusted by the song and dug a few rangers fans up who phoned in saying it was just banter.....I then tuned in a few days later and he was asking if objections to the song were just the PC brigade gone mad.....I suspect he's just a clown with no strong beliefs who just says anything thAt will stir debate....roughy on the other hand is just a clown!

WGS

You ask a difficult question of a fan but, on balance, the answer is No.

I would expect our club to obtain a higher transfer fee for a young defender with vast CL experience who has been praised by many top managers. We are too quick to talk down our own.

In saying that, I am not exaggerating Mick's qualities. Maybe Darren O'Dea or Glenn could grow into the position too but I'd still expect us to fetch more than £1m more than we had to pay Cardiff for Glenn. Remember, we were quoted a higher figure for trying to sign Michael Turner when he had only played at Championship level and Cuellar went for more than double what you are quoting.

However, if we had a top notch CB lined up, who was a similar age and cost less, then, of course you can sell your club captain. Rangers did it with Barry and we did it with Kenny.

You wouldn't get more than 5 million for him. Is he better than Cuellar? I'll leave that to MON to decide. The way i look at it if MON rated him highly he wold have went for him instead of Cuellar. Remember MON was around the time Stephen was up and coming. He rated other people at our club better in the same positions. He tried him in a few games and concluded he wasn't for him. If MON stayed on IMO that Stephen would haVE BEEN FOR THE HIGH JUMP.

I'll just say Mick is worth a lot more than you think he's worth and a lot less than you think I believe he is worth.

Above all, I'm glad that fans don't determine these matters. People with proven track records in coaching and managing have earned the right to exercise their judgement and stand and fall by it.

I've managed a boy's football club and a volleyball club. Never had to negotiate a transfer fee so, like you, I can probably claim a 100% error free record in that area.

Reports: Redknapp may well be in charge for Spurs' game with Bolton Sunday.

See Bloke_109's sccop at 11.55 :-)

WGS

How much? Does not come into it - He's not for sale.

As you mention it though, how much would you say?

After all he is a young, well mannered, honest man. Respected by most, questioned by others. He is captain of his club, has captained his country. He has champions league and international experience. Arguably vast for his years. Weighs in with goals and he lifted the league in his first season as captain, against all odds I may add.

Now... ... Hutton £9m - one half good season and Gordon. Same price for 1 and a half good seasons spring to mind

How much would you sell him for?

Buenas noches amighos - sleep calls - working early! 10 December - O'Sheas Manchester - CQN NW Clique!!!! Interlopers welcome.

WGS - MON left Celtic 3.5 years ago, McManus was....22? Bit early for a centre-back to be maturing. Like it or not, MON was not the be all and end all in player judgement. He could also be wrong.

I like McManus a lot, and I'll stick by that. I wouldn't sell him for 10 million. Further, I'm convinced that if we did sell then some astute EPL manager would pick him up, and we'd never hear the end of what a bad decision it was to let him go.

Put a decent left back beside him and see what your opinion is then.

Settingfree,

With PL at the table your probably right

WGS

Enjoyed the exchange. I better catch up with some sleep before I try to convince anyone that Lee Naylor is worth £5m :-)

Henry F. Potter - Welcome to the blog :-)

Rednapp to Spurs? Interesting move. He seemed happy at Portsmouth and lives on the south coast. Spurs job isn't an easy one but he may well be the man to turn it around.

Pesky foreign coach replaced by a good old home boy. Heard that one before somewhere ...

Antsman,

suprised he aint joined anybody yet

WGS

It makes me suspicious, sign him till end of season to allow him to gte himself in shop window if he is fit!

Harry Redknapp on Sky Sports News just now saying he was happy at Portsmouth, but Spurs offered him £5 million to join and he said he couldn't turn it down.

SonsofErin

Spot on re our captain. Had McManus cost us £3 - 5 Million we would have been good value for money. He is the most consistant performer to break through from the reserves in many years.

I thought he had an excellent match at OT and for a centre half he is still young.

He is a better defnder than Hutton who had six good months before going south for a huge fee. Stephen's had 3 very good years with us now. He is captain and vice captain of Scotland so yes £10m is a fair valuation.

I'm glad there are fans that recongnise the quality of both McManus and Caldwell.

WGS - Next few games check how many times McManus is forced to cover out to the left, simply because Naylor has been beaten, given the ball away, or caught too far upfield. And how many times McManus saves Naylor's bacon.

Caldwell doesn't have to cover the right-back nearly as much.

I like Caldwell, especially the last few months, but he does have a tendency for the dodgy tackle. All the penalties seem to come from Caldwell mistakes. I think McManus is the better defender over the long term. But overall I think we've got a strong central defence, its generally the full-backs that need work.

And if we need a third central defender I believe that man will be John Kennedy, he's playing out of his skin for Norwich at the moment.

oneanton

I think that £5m figure was maybe the compensation figure offered to Pompey. This situation though makes transfer windows a bit silly - ok for Spurs, being pro-active, but for Pompey, they have to begin a search for a new manager. Arguably, given their league positions and the fact Pompey are in the UEFA Cup, short-term, the Portsmouth gig is the more appealing.

Think I'll take it if they offer it...

Sorry, Spurs offered Portsmouth £5m for his services. Misheard it. Still, stupid money, isn't it?

What makes me walk through Ireland's shrines
And Ireland's holy shores
To see a country crucified
Your beauty crowned in thorns
And as I watch that wonderous cross
That's been hewn down and severed in two
There's something here
That draws me near
To wear the green for you
To see you there blood brother Gael
The face, the tongue my own
Many places in my own country
Could not make me feel more at home
Laughter and music through the night
Your freedom in the dark
Tonight I swear I'd gladly wear
The green next to ma heart
From the long and rolling Antrim hills
Through the wilds of Donegal
The songs of history are sung
Every stone on every wall
But here in our land how can we stand
And wash our hands of shame
When the sins of generations fall
Across the green like rain
Here one world window opens wide
And demons they show face
Some of your men have taken seeds of truth
And planted fields of hate
This way has never won a war
And I fear that when the harvest comes
You'll see your freedom fall on stoney ground
And the green overgrown

EXCLUSIVE: 'Uncertainty at Fratton meant I left' - Redknapp
By Sam Matterface - 26/10/2008 01:10

So it's true. Harry Redknapp has joined Spurs after the White Hart Lane club paid Portsmouth £5 million pounds in compensation - and he cited uncertainty at Fratton as the reason why he's going.

Portsmouth were approached on Friday morning whilst warming down on the beach in Portugal by the Spurs Chairman Daniel Levy, who was given permission (albeit reluctantly) to talk to Redknapp.

At that point Harry Redknapp then had a decision to make. Had he achieved everything he could at Portsmouth? Was the lure of the Tottenham job just too hard to resist? It turns out the answer to both those questions is yes.

He also told me what we already knew. Portsmouth is up for sale. He told me his long term future was uncertain; "If a new owner comes in," he said "They might not want me, and this is the chance to manage a massive club before I retire."

He also said that £5 million representated a lot of compensation and was a good deal for the club. In truth it is a lot more than most clubs are compensated in similar situations.

Redknapp has taken Portsmouth to heights unexpected on the day he arrived as Director of Football in 2001, and with a squad assembled that gives them a sure footing.

In our conversation he expressed genuine appreciation and affection for the club and his fans, and whatever your view, your raw emotion, as you wake to this news, no one can argue that he has been one of the greatest manager's in the club's history.

But evreyone knows some, understandably will find it hard to take. After all, statistically Portsmouth have been better with him than without him.

It's disapointing that the marriage is over, but the split was always going to come - the shock is, no one believed it would be soon.

great game yesterday pity we all got saoked well i did anyway.

Great fighting performance just what we needed after the man unt game.

Have to give special credit to brown what a player and hinkle did well in the second half.

Greetings CQNers from (a trying to be) sunny Salford,

I think Hugh MacDonald summed our captain up perfectly: flawed but dedicated. For me, he makes too many vital mistakes (and not simply because he is covering for our LB). He goes into tackles he shouldn't, he gets caught out of position too often, he punts the ball aimlessly far too often and he is not commanding enough in the air in defence. He has improved and may improve still further but I would give Loovens the chance to play in his position. His CB partner should be the captain.

Boltonbhoy,

I hope to join you and Celtic_First in O'Shea's, although I can't promise at this stage. Have you made sure they are showing the game? ManU will be playing at the same time against Villareal and they may well be showing that game.

Paul67,

Congratulations on the 5s. I gather Glasgow's weather was like Borneo's yesterday.

mornin , enjoyed the game yesterday , cant say the football is boring this year

the team worked hard and tried to keep passing in awful conditions
thought at 2-0 we would coast home but it wouldn't be the tic if we won the easy way

i didnt think we had any poor performers -

in defence thought nish battered robson all day and he stuck at it
loovens playing in his proper position looked good and another goal
hinkel much better than of late

midfield brown worked hard and once he scored he had a superb 20 mins hartley kept it going and put in a good shift covering and trying to break up the hibs moves

up front thought cillian lead the line well and took is goal superbly well done son , though scott m played much more like it and on another day would have got his goal

for hibs fletcher was excellent - scotland wont miss boyd if he keeps this up he will be scotlands 1st choice

well done to all how went to the 5ives

Morning all

Great day yesterday despite the monsoon and horizontal wind

Really enjoyed the 5s and putting some faces to the names (real names too git me a bit confused though) Hats off (think it blew away) to the players who battled away in terrible conditions.

It reminded me of a saying my olld man used to come out with when it was raining and we didnt want to go out and play football

YOUR NOT MADE OF SUGAR - anyone heard that before or was it one my old man made up

Well done to Token Tims bhoys on the victory and unlucky the gallant runners up

Paul 67 - great to meet you and small world indeed neighbour

Gordon J - your a gem mate - enjoyed your company and also great to find another US sports nut as daft as me. Well done last night too

Curly - I hope the "wee boy" enjoyed his birthday treat and sure the match yesterday made his weekend - great stuff in the circumstances. It was good to meet you both and hope the journey back up went without any problems (you may have been better off asking the Aberdeen Lifeboat Service for a loan of one of their crafts instead).

Celtic Bob - hope the heads ok today - will post the photos on my bebo

And finally - got a photo with the legend that is Daniel Fergus McGrain and spent 5 minutes catting with him. The man is class and spoke of his hopes for Cillian and confirmed that Deeks was the laziest trainer at CP and just never shone in training.

My view on the performances yesterday:

Boruc: A superb save from a deflection and solid in slippery conditions. Better under the cross ball than of late but am I right in detecting he`s a little less popular with the fans at the moment?

Hinkel: His best game for some time;

Caldwell: 6 months ago ,I would have said this was one of his best performances; it`s a sign of his vast improvement that this was now considered below par for him!

Mick: Same as ever. Lovely pass (honest!) to Skippy fo 2nd goal;

Loovens:Very good. Looking more confident.

Robson:Not the answer to LB problem but NEVER let`s us down.

Naka: As always, sublime moments but not at his best of late. I think he hears the sound of Japan calling. He`ll be greatly missed.

Hartley: Unlike others, I thought he was too slow but worked hard and had a better second half.

Brown: At the centre of everything then after a quite 10 minute spell in the second half, scored then played his best football so far for Celtic. Like others, I can see his star rising and shining brightly (MOTM, for me);

Maloney: A good, professional performance and , from my seat, looked looked he should have had a penalty;

Sheridan: Very promising. Indeed, looked comfortable already. An excellent Georgios stand in for the moment. The way he took his goal inspired confidence.

Skippy: Had his best game of a disappointing season so far. Again from my seat, looked fortunate not to have received red.

Subs:
Aiden: Usual skills but little end product. Sounds familiar but with his talent, I am certain he will eventually be superb.

Paddy Mc Court: I don`t know what game Walker was at. In the few minutes he was on, I thought I saw something a bit special.

Overall, a good performance in difficult circumstances. Both the team and ourselves seem to need to be under threat at home before we start performing as we both can.

I was at game yesterday was and was pleased with overall performance, especially the good performance from Hinkel (as we really need good full backs to make this system work)

Anyway, it's funny how everyone watching a game sees it differently but I honestly thought Scott Brown had a poor game. My dad agreed with me but we seem to be in a minority of 2! Let me just state up front I'm a fan of Brown and glad we signed him...and I'm sure he'll go on to have a good Celtic career....but...I thought his passing was off yesterday and he didn't contribute much til he scored in 80th minute - then played well for 10 mins.

Hinkel or Caldwell were MOTM for me.

PS A quick note on Caldwell - I admit to be one of the many fans that despaired at Caldwell's many mistakes when he first arrived and thought he would never make it at Celtic. Although the season is early, he's arguably the front runner for player of the season for us....the mental strength it must take to turn from being criticsed so heavily by fans to playing as well as he is now is amazing. Should McManus be out for a while (why did he get taken off at half time by the way?) then GC should be our captain....and maybe even stay our captain.

Lubo

mick has a tight hamstring

I agree regards GC but it is early days yet for him to be captain. I think Mick was given the captaincy too early and that has affected his performances - so think it would be best to let GC develop and maybe one day be captain.

At no time did I say that it is acceptable to be charged £15 to get a picture taken with the SPL trophy, personally I think it is a bit excessive myself.

The point I am making is that, if people don't want to pay it then don't.

Personally however, I would far rather pay £15 for a tangible photo of my kids than spend more than £15 on hot dogs and pies and cokes and scarves and hats and badges and socks and cups and pens............

THE GATE IN THE WOOD - SUNDAY UPDATE

The masonic triumvirate of Duffield, Alexanderson and David's plot to eliminate WinninGemmell following a corporate hospitality do at the Holy Trinity Lounge, Old Twafford is unhinged when our hero dupes England internationalist, Wio Ferdinand, into believing fridge magnet, Willie Chaughey, is indeed Winston Bergkamp Gemmell. Ferdinand attacks Chaughey in the lounge in a case of mistaken identity which Wio lays at the feet of Gordon Duffield, the Scampi Fries-scented Chief Executive of the SFA. Chaughey is incandescent and threatens to pull his sponsorship of the Scottish Cup but Duffield sweet talks the chill chief round and they agree to team up against WG. Duffield needs all the allies he can get as former-friends, Sir Murray David and Brown Browning are on the warpath.Meanwhile, off the pitch, it has been another bad week for Banchester United manager, Sir Fergus Alexanderson. The unexpected loss of the Champions League theme CD forced Alexanderson to accept NAFOS' last-ditch solution - an impromptu performance of Zadok The Priest by the loafer-light, Hugh Richards, accompanied by SOAL, Ulysses and The Badger. Lady Cafe Ferguson falls for NAFOS' irresistible charms and ends up spending the 'knight' with him at the Stretford Moat Hoose whilst WG hotwheels it back to ML2. The post-match whereabouts of the 'Four Fivers' is currently unknown. Alexanderson tries to file a missing person's report on Cafe but gets short shrift from the GMP's Roxanne O'Reilly, the latest in a never-ending line of cheeky female phone answerers. The sorry tale will continue while interest is maintained. We have an ending, believe it or not.

£15 for photos is expensive, but my nephew has moved to saudia to work his brother is going to use his ticket for the rest of the season but yesterday he could not find it , phoned the ticket office for a new card or a paper one for the hibs game ,was told he needed photo id that it was him to get a paper ticket for hibs game. and that it was £35 for a replacement season card, now is that not a rip off £35 just to issue a new card??????

Interesting snippet in today's Sunday Times.

an interesting take on the game , and one i agree with in parts

I considered Hinkel to have had a very good game , he defended very well , against Riordan , and supplied very good support going forward .

Regarding S Brown , i don`t think he was great during the first half of the game but thought he contributed much more in teh second half , certainly more than 10 mins .IMO he was instrumental in driving us forward in the last half hour .he was ably assisted in this regard by the aforementioned Hinkel and Hartley .I think a lot of what one takes from the game can be influenced by where one is seated , i sit in 102 and saw a lot of Brown in the second half .

As for Caldwell , i don`t think he played badly , however yesterday , imo, was not one of his better games . He looked hesitant in the first half ,dare i say he improved in the second , how much that had to do with Loovens coming on i`ll leave to others to speculate .

Special mention has to be given to young Sheridan , given his age and experience he played really well .The conditions were atrocious and he was up against a very tough customer in Jones , yet he led the line well and took his goal with aplomb .Well done son .

Lastly , after supporting Loovens last weekend ,then calling his game into question after Tuesday , i like to state that he had a very good game , scored a great goal and looked much more comfortable playing in the left side CB .

A very entertaining game and despite the waterlogged hypothermia i enjoyed my after noon .

Paul67...congrats to all who braved the conditions yesterday, i was going to come along but , the weather put paid to my intentions .

A fair critique of the individual performances although i thought Hartley was a real stand out in the aggression /tenacity stakes in the second half .I particularly remember a real boneshaking tackle on that choob Shiels just after that debacle over the return of the ball ....

also , i had forgotten about the "penalty" incident

i`m in 102 and looked a stonewaller for me

Cillian Sheridan came from the club in Dublin I coach, so obviously I,m delighted he took his chance and scored.

Agree on Hartley - he looked up for the game and slimmer in the hoops too.

We need a new 3rd strip - but maybe they should give it away for free to the fans cos money is tight (like PHs shorts on tuesday)

Roccobhoy

Didnt know that about Cillian - one to spur your boys on with. How did they do yesterday?

The bhoy done well for a young lad on his 1st start and given the conditions. Reminded me of Craig Beattie but didnt pull a hamstring or look puffed out.... Strong running and a great goal. Won his share in the air against a big CH..

btw .. i had read an article on him previously ...is it true that he was more of a gaelic football player as a kid

They did not play, game was called off at the last minute as the pitch was demed unplayable, in fairness to the referee it was the correct decision even though its frustrating when a game is called off at the last minute.

Yes I agree young Cillian is an example that I can use to motivate my players, in fact I will be saying thart to them on Wednesday at training.

You must have got drowned yesterday as we got it pretty bad.

One of the bhoys from work sits in the second row in the front stand on the 6 yard line - we were phoning him and winding him up to come up and sit with us. Poor guy was like a drooned rat.

soaked to the skin

thought the tenor was great

although , as has been mentioned by others , his "Carousel "approach to YNWA left a lot of folk scratching their heads ...a few beside me even accused him of not singing it properly :¬)

Good performance yesterday, pity we had to win the game twice.

High spot for me was Sheridan. It's good to see young players breaking through and even better when they contribute.

He seemed confident enought to try few things not just the simple stuff.Did well off the ball as well looking for the ball in wider areas similar to Samaras.

Good to see Hinkle look more like the player we thought we were signing.

My only worry about yesterday was Naka looks out of form. He was again neat and tidy on the ball but we've come to expect more.

I'll finish with a bit of advice for Andy Walker.

Stop hanging about with your pal Derek Johnstone, you're already sounding like a Rangers apologist and grade one rocket.

PF Ayr

We had been at the 5s then the match so were glad we were not in the deep end.

KC came across a good guy and although was only asked to cove the final said "no I will be there from the start" didnt want to be the celbrity ref for the final.

Yeah that one with Danny will be treasured.

BTW he spoke very highly of Cillian - we chatted for 5 mins and he said he hoped that he got a run - still raw and likely to fall over his own feet right now but will pick himself up and score goals while leading the line well.

have you recovered from the trip yet?

Think it was a job done game, thought players shone for 5 minute periods, no stand outs, but Hibs didn't have to play too well and it was 2-2, though their first was fortunate.

I'm a bit hesitant to say this, especially as I dont want to dwell on the tragic loss off a young man at a terrible time for his family, but the support showed their maturity in the heart warming applause yesterday at half time.

Looks like rafa's going for a defensive line up. With Torres absent, he's playing Alonso and Mascherano.

2 big questions.

Will Keane last? If not, Rafa, shuts up shop even more quickly hoping for 0:0.

Will Deco be ready to feed Anelka after a long lay off? If he's not, Chelsea will struggle.

I'm predicting one goal or less, so you'd best get your money on a 5:4 game now.

Alright Bhoys and Ghirls?

First of all I think a big thanks must go to everyone involved in the organising of the CQN 5s tourney. You did a fantastic job!
I don't want to name names for fear of missing out anyone and possibly offending anyone. But you know who you are and how much your efforts are appreciated. A tremendous job, well done to you all.
Can I just say that the coffee's, teas, hot orange's etc were a godsend in between games. Thank you!

I thought Kenny Clarke was excellent, both in turning up from the start and as a ref, although big Craggy may disagree :-)

It was also great to meet a Celtic legend in Danny McGrain and a real honour to be presented the CQN 5s Trophy from the great man himself - what a belter of a trophy it is btw, very generous donation from Trophy World Direct.

As for the football itself, Brian Heaney, it was a bloody hard game in that final, I'm just glad that I had the younger Bhoys in my team to do my running for me! Look foward to maybe playing you and the Shut Up Michael bhoys next year.
Thanks for a good game and in fact that goes out to every team we played. Special mentions for attire to the Parka-wearing Paddy McCourts Beard Bhoy and Justin of Brattback for his impression of 1930's keeper :-)

We are already looking forward to defending the trophy next year!

Jinksyboy,
good to meet you mate and some good photos mate. Just hope that no-one caught the Token-in-embarassing-pose on film.....probably would have broke the lens right enough!
Just goes to show how much respect the young Il Verdeblanco's had for their captain.
Also want to let you know that I gave my donation for the shinny's direct to Ross. Hope that was OK?

TGITW Episode 65

GMP: Greater Manchester Police, Roxanne speaking, how may I help you ?

WG: Good morning, Roxanne and how are you today ?

R: I'm fine, sir, and thanks for asking. What can I do for you ?

WG: I'm wondering if you know what the score is with the Four Fivers ?

R: The melodic Celtic Quartet who sang Zadok The Priest before our unfair defeat last Tuesday night ?

WG: The very four, a Lanarkshire hybrid of the Beatles and the Krankies. They haven't been seen since they saved Alexanderson's .. er ... bacon. No offence, Roxanne.

R: None taken, sir, I work on the civilian side of the force. Do you wish to file a missing foursome report ?

WG: I think we'll give it another couple of days but they missed the Hibs game yesterday which is unlike them. Concerning, Roxanne.

R: A good result given the circumstances, sir. Why don't I put a few feelers out, get back to you in 24 hours, Mr....??

WG: Gemmell

R: As in the famous Tommy of the Era Bar flats fame ?

WG: The very man.

R: My grandfather was a Craigneuk man. I can assure you I will give this case my utmost diligence, Mr Gemmell.

WG: Winston, please. Ok, Roxanne, if you give me your direct line I'll call you tomorrow afternoon and thanks a million for your help. You are a credit to Celtic and a credit to the City of Manchester.

Oh Manchester

So much to answer for...

FULL BACKS!
Sons of Erin put it very well yesterday - they make all the difference to the centre of defence.
Two years ago I was berating the midfield duo who were exposing the central defenders. We seem to have sorted that now. The old left back chestnut will see Mick improve no end. Just watched re run of goals on you tube and again it was the left back area that damaged us, especially the second hibs goal.

I foretell 4-in-a-row with a new LB in January or Lee Naylor being given some lessons in positioning.

Can anyone tell me who played the ball to Scott Brown for the fourth goal yesterday?

Liverpool for the english Premiership?

Celticesque 3-2 wins in their previous two games and 0-1 against Chelsea at the moment.

That result at Old Trafford is certainly worth contemplating.

Food for thought: Celtic manager Gordon Strachan at Old Trafford as his team lost 3-0 to Manchester United in the Champions League Photo: AP
The margin of victory for Manchester United was comfortable, the expression of their technical superiority even more so, a fact rubbed in by the derisive comments of their supporters on the subsequent radio phone-ins and message boards, questioning why the opposition supposed they could compete with any sort of credibility at this level.

And yes, the scoreline - plus the emphatic contrast in performance between the sides - simply emphasised a gulf that looks quite unbridgeable. At this stage it should be mentioned that we are not talking about Tuesday’s Champions League encounter between Manchester United and Celtic, but the meeting last Saturday of United and the club all of four points and six places behind them in the Barclay’s Premier League.

Amid the rush in Scotland to self-flagellate about the state of the native game and the haste in some quarters in England to taunt or pity Celtic after their 3-0 mauling at Old Trafford, it seems to have been forgotten that less than 72 hours earlier, Tony Mowbray’s West Brom were swept aside 4-0. Aside from the fact that both Celtic and West Brom were exposed to a United side currently on fire, a comparison of the pair is instructive.

Jeremy Peace, the West Brom chairman, announced in June that he was effectively putting the club up for sale. His reasons?

The team could not effectively compete in the Premier League without more finance and he argued that although promotion from the Championship was usually estimated to be worth £60 million, that was over a three-year period, hence the reason for so many promoted clubs going straight back down after one season.

The average attendance at The Hawthorns hovers around 25,000, turnover during West Brom’s last spell in the English top flight was £35 million and the club’s worth is estimated at anything from £25 million to £60 million, depending on the value of the training ground and TV revenues.

Celtic’s turnover is more than double that of West Brom’s and the Parkhead season ticket holding is more than twice that of the average Hawthorns crowd. So, were Celtic - or Rangers - to be parachuted straight into the English Premier League, it is clear that they should have no great difficulty holding their own in the middle reaches, especially given that their marketing revenue would instantly expand, as would their ability to attract the calibre of player they crave.

And then? As Sir Alex Ferguson declared when asked exactly that question, that after three or four years, either or both members of the Old Firm should be challenging for the English title. For the foreseeable future, though, such a scenario is not going to happen, so must Scottish clubs simply endure what most domestic pundits seem resigned to viewing as a dispiriting half-life in a European limbo?

Not at all - if the will is there. There are four immediate ways to address the problems, two of them political, one administrative and one purely in football terms.

Since Alex Salmond is fond of turning up at Hampden Park for international matches, he could form a task force to find out exactly why Aberdeen could win a European trophy and Dundee United reach a Uefa Cup final and European Cup semi-final in the 1980s, with sides wholly composed of Scottish players - and the Scottish Executive could also begin to implement the installation of full-length indoor pitches, suitable for the scouring northern weather, just as Norway did 20 years ago.

Second, Scotland’s First Minister could lobby the Home Office to relax the work-permit rules relating to the signing of non-EU footballers, which are much more stringent than those in, say, Spain, Portugal and Holland.

Third, Celtic and Rangers might care to note that most of their best signings in the past two decades have been footballers whose careers had either stalled elsewhere or were given a vital boost by playing in front of adoring capacity crowds at Ibrox or Parkhead - think of Henrik Larsson, Chris Sutton, Lubo Moravcik, John Hartson, Shunsuke Nakamura, Brian Laudrup, Paul Gascoigne, Ray Wilkins and Mark Hateley.

And, fourth, the current Champions League payment structure should be scrapped. The TV revenue naturally gets its biggest payments from the main broadcasters in the Big Five countries - England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain - who naturally want to see the cash go to teams from their manors.

But any system that pays Arsenal or AC Milan up to three times as much as Scottish, Dutch or Portuguese clubs - for exactly the same performances - simply because they play in bigger countries, is anti-competitive and anti-sporting.

If, over 10 years, Celtic or Rangers had parity with, say Manchester United in Champions League group payouts, it would mean an extra £80 million revenue flowing north of the border - not enough to close the gap, but a mightily significant boost to the Old Firm transfer kitty.

Finally, in football, money and power still aren’t everything. Manchester United have made more successive appearances, played more games, recorded more victories and taken more points from the Champions League than any other club - and have won the tournament twice since its inception in 1992.

Porto, from a country of 10 million, have won it once - and in the last 20 years they have been champions of Europe twice, same as United.

Memo to Celtic fans - stop beating yourselves about a result just because it happened in Manchester and not Madrid.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend..RobertTressell.

You are so right,pal.

Attacks down the Left side of the Celtic Defense, have proved to be the Strategy du Jour, for our opposition.

What makes it so galling... it could be cured... and ..somewhat easily.

That is supposing that the powers that be at Celtic, are even aware that we have a problem area in the Rear Left Wing Area.

I am not too sure that the Celtic Training Staff are even cognizant of the Fact.. that the Left Back Area, is the source of a very large percentage of the Goals that we have conceded.

The reason I say that the problem could be solved rather easily.. here is the solution.

Sign a Left Back... but...not just any Left Back..

But

One that can run unfettered, the One Hundred Yards Dash... in ELEVEN SECONDS FLAT, wearing Cleats.

Simple..

The Individual that we obtain, does not have any need of outstanding, tackling, heading or other Soccer Talents..just a run of the mill player,in those categories, will do.

He JUST NEEDS TO RUN LIKE A HARE~

If one such worthy had been playing for us yesterday... well.. there would soitenly not have been a Hibs, Second Goal..

Our New Man.. would have easily outpaced the lumbering leggy Hibs Player in the Run down for the Ball.

I can recall, many, many such runs downs in the Past ..that have affected the scoreline badly.

One incident in particular.... Novo's, goal against us, when he easily outpaced the slow, slow, slow, Mark Wilson in a run down.

Whenever we play, the likes of Wilson and Naylor...or.. Barry..in that particular position...

We are as good as giving the opposition Manager the High Sign..

"O.K. Pal.. we are open for Business... Mount your attacks, down the Left."

As I have said...

Get the Scouts out..and Make them aware of just what we need.. obviously.. in answer to my earlier question...

The Powers that Be at Parkhead..

Really Do not KNOW, the full extent of what we actually, Need.

When they sign a German Full Back...who again.. is soitenly Not Fleet of Foot...in any run down..

It makes me wonder that even if we do Sign a Much needed Left Back.. we may still overlook the very IMPORTANT swiftness of foot that our New Man must possess....that should be our Paramount Target.

As I have said on here, ad nauseam...

I have Nevah Evah Played the Game!

But...

It is so obvious to me, that maybe, in the case of Soccer... That would be a Distinct Advantage!

For days and days, I lauded the Heading Prowess of Mr. Loovens..after he scored with his Heid, in his very Foist Game~

Nobody took any notice~

Hey! Now that he has just scored his FOURTH goal.. with his NAPPER.. in a very small handful of games or opportunities..

Maybe the Powers the Be will say to themselves..

"Doh~ I believe, we may have something, in this young fellow..more than meets the eye!"

Sure ye hiv, ye Dumb Bunnies~

"Napper" Loovens, is a cotton pickin', Secret Weapon...!

He is as deadly wi' his Heid as Oor Henri~

I give up.. I think I will have to go back to Ten Pin Bowling again...at least in that game,my comments are appreciated~

yea. Read that article yesterday and thought it made a lot of sense and presents sound reasons why footbal money should be distributed more equaly. Lets face it the big teams from bigger countries need some level of competition if a game is to be worth watching. The way things are the sections are just a token gesture at inclusion for which the lesser country teams are poorly rewarded. We need a peasants (us being the peasants) revolution. Tell UEFA they can stick the CL where the sun dont shine. Just go straight into the UEFA.

Take the competitive ethic out of sport and replace it with the business one of winner takes all and its no longer a sport, its a business.

Businesses would not get away with extenal subsidies the way the bigger teams do.

The more articles like that which expose the folly of the existing system the better the chance of a change in it.

jinksy/ roccobhoys,

It's the Hallowe'en weekend holiday here.

Good atricle by Sean Fallon on the B J K on the Sunday Times,

Martin.

This is the article Martin42 refers to:

THE former assistant to Jock Stein has spoken out against a campaign suggesting the late Celtic manager ignored the sexual abuse of boys at the club during the 1960s and 70s.

Sean Fallon, who worked with Stein for nearly 30 years, said it was “absurd and offensive” to suggest Stein, the first British manager to win the European Cup, knew members of the Celtic Boys Club were being systematically abused by a coach.

The allegations have been made by Rangers supporters, who have sung the slogan “Big Jock Knew” at matches, held up banners and posted videos featuring the taunts on the internet. The campaign has grown in popularity since attempts to nominate Stein for a posthumous knighthood.

The taunts refer to child sex abuse charges for which the former boys’ club manager, James Torbett, was found guilty and imprisoned. Torbett’s crimes were uncovered in 1996 when former footballer Alan Brazil revealed that he had been molested at the age of 13 at Torbett’s home in Sighthill, Glasgow. Torbett was found guilty on charges of shameless and indecent conduct with three juveniles between October 1967 and March 1974. In 1998 he was jailed for two-and-a-half years.

None of Torbett’s victims or their parents reported his crimes to the police at the time. He was dismissed from the club by Stein in 1974 after rumours about his behaviour.

Fallon, 86, insisted Stein, the former Scotland manager who died of a heart attack in 1985, had no idea about Torbett’s behaviour and said he was removed from the club as soon as it came to light.

“There’s no truth to any of this at all,” he said. “Torbett was put out of the club. Jock wouldn’t have anything like that happening, particularly with young boys.”

Fallon said Rangers FC should take firm action against the fans involved.

“A lot of Rangers fans are good people . . . Rangers Football Club have done everything in their power to sort it out and there was talk about not letting people like that into their games. I know it is going to very difficult but they should be stopped from going in.

“It’s disappointing for the club that they represent [it] because they are not looked upon as individuals, they are looked upon as Rangers supporters . . . unfortunately, some humans are like that, no matter how great you are they try and pull you down. These people should think about Jock’s family.”

Last November, Peter Lawwell, Celtic’s chief executive, called the campaign “poisonous, repugnant and cowardly”.

Last week club sources said they would be monitoring clips featuring the slogan on the YouTube website.

This month, Rangers chairman Sir David Murray condemned supporters of the club who engaged in spouting “bile” at games and on websites.

A spokesman for Rangers said: “The club has made enormous strides in tackling sectarianism and bitterly opposes any form of discriminatory or antisocial behaviour.”

A Celtic spokesman said it did not want to comment on the campaign.

Apologies if I shouldn't have posted the article above. There are comments added on the article which are a`disgrace, as one might expect from the filth.

Important match beckons for Dexys Midnight

Kojo

I think you suffer from seeing things as they are and not as others would have us believe. What an ailment ;)

On Loovens it takes time for a CB to settle in. To get two important goals in consecutive games is a bonus worth getting in that settling in period. There will be more to come and he will make a solid CB for us allowing Caldwell to play in front of the back four.

On left back: that Naylor was not the answer was so obvious to all that Celtic stand culpable of dereliction of duty.
In someways I blame an attitude of WGS that often serves us well, that is accepting ones lot and trying to make the best of it.
But there has to be a time to say the lot (in this case Naylor)cannot be made any better and its time to change. Call it over loyalty. Its not that WGS is blind to it, it just takes him longer to accept that some things cannot be fixed within existing resources.
Just imagine how much better we would be with two good full backs. We played half last season without a RB and this season without a left back. Is it just a strategy to make the SPL more exciting?

Bloke 109 and RRC

Thanks Bhoys, cannot do the links thing,

Martin.

Kojo, don't put yourself down, I for one certainly appreciate your comments on ten pin bowling ;)

I think what you suggested a week or so ago was playing Loovens up front in place of JVoH/Sammi. You can't so easily turn a defender into a striker, no matter how good they are in the air.

Central defenders _should_ be good with their heads, and a good attacking option at set pieces, both McManus and Caldwell have demonstrated this on occasion. It doesn't mean they can play as striker. But in one respect you are right, Loovens is doing everything right at attacking set pieces.

kojo

Didier Agathe is still kicking around.Maybe lost a yard or two now but that would do the 11secs thing i imagine

Two things on the comments (and the lie itself)

Billy could not have known Big Jock knew unless Jock told him. Did the transcripts say that or was Billy stating a belief he held.

Regardless what is totally ignored that it was not until Esther Rantzen put the focus on child abuse and encouraged the victim to report it that name and shame became the fashion for dealing with the crime. Before that the very shame of the crime was what kept victims and their families (if they knew about it)silent.

Thus even if the crimes were known any silence would not have been to cover up the crminal but to protect the victim.

Its not what one does that makes it good or bad, it is the intent behind it and back then staying silent was considered better than going public.

Of course that kind of argument that tries to put a historical context on things is beyond those who cannot grasp that the Pope was a backer of King Billy. see

but Hey, why let the truth spoil a convenient lie?

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. Sons of Erin..

You are correct, I did indeed suggest that "Napper" should be tried as a Striker...

However.. It was meant to be a one off..

It was for the Game agin the Spanish.

Where,I believed because of the magnificent Spanish defense..

A one up Striker..as we did play.. would not be effective..

"Napper" would have conducted himself as well as Georgie Bhoy.. who besides his calmitous miss.. was thoroughly stifled..

Howevahhhhhhhh..

My suggestion was aimed at finding a berth for a Player.. like "Napper " who could take supreme advantage of a Set Piece..

That is the reason why I suggested the Inclusion of Mr. Loovens...

And would not hesitate to do so, again..in similar circumstances.

The One up Striker role.. is a Downer, against a well marshalled defense.

I hope you can see my reasoning..

Bloke109 :- If it's the same article (4 comments) could you please tell me what comments posted by "filth" are a disgrace?

Auldheid :- I can assure you that plenty of Rangers fans are aware of the fact the Pope backed King Billy.
I also disagree with you when you say "Its not what one does that makes it good or bad, it is the intent behind it " In my opinion that is just a cop out.

I would like to point out that I have condemned the BJK chant since it started and tried to argue with others about it however I do hit problems when folk bring up certain points.
The court transcript.
The non reporting to the police.
Torbett being allowed back into CBC.
I don't know the truth behind any of the points as I haven't tried to study the case but my own opinion of Mr Stein is that he would never knowingly condone the actions of the diseased animal Torbet.

Kojo

I share completely your views on politicians.
Whom we elect simply reflects the worst of fears in human nature.

Having said that I am at a loss to understand that Bush could get two terms before folk tumbled that the cure to what they feared is worse than what they feared in the first place, and that was only a fear planted and fertilised by the same politicians who promised to have the answer to that fear.

I hope Obama gets elected and does well, particularly on health care.A nation that does not take care of its sick is doomed to be sick imho.
But in the end he too will probably succumb to one dark fear or another.

Love more, fear less is my motto.
But love takes courage.

and that's my rant for the day.

Edward

Certainly. The comment placed by the guy pretending to be a Celtic fan, John Large, Kent. Big Jock Knew. Using a pseudonym to get the slogan underhandedly into a national media is apparently a game within some sections of the Rangers support, who I would describe as 'filth'. See youtube for examples, and this has happened in non-football media too.

Moreover, comments from two others who say 'the chant is wrong but' and then try and make political capital is 'filth', a bit like saying that Mussolini made the trains run on time. Unequivocal condemnation is my line, and I am pretty sure it is your's too. An emotive subject, so let's not mince words for those who say 'aye, the chant is wrong, but he did actually know'.

So there you go. Filth. And you well know from previous exchanges I am not tarring with the same brush here.

Bloke109 :- Fair enough, and I accept the fact you are using it to those specific comments and others like them.
Cold I make the point though that a large section of Rangers fans (wrongly in my opinion) do believe that he knew and I find it hard to argue against them when they bring up those points.

Ed Urs - ref. my point the other night there about anti-racists orgs and progressive Rangers supporters, thanks for reply.

Is there any anti-racist organisation within the supporters to counter the filth spewed by the many? Is there any discussion amongst anti-racists such as yourself to tackle the problem?

Or are you a minority of one, two if we include Graham Spiers? Of course there are more, the question is... what are you doing about it?

A Man has all of God's Given attributes, to make his way in this Life.. Built-in... Straight from the womb...well, he diz need a solid and stable Parentage.. and upbringing.. but other than that..

A Man, is very well equipped, by Nature, to fend for Himself.

One thing he does not need is a Politician Bleeding his excess funds.. in order to give to somebody else.. in order for the Politician.. and this is All Politicians.. .Not jist Obama..to secure the object of his Largesse's vote..

Obama said this publically ...

"It is time in America, TO SPREAD THE WEALTH~"

Now that is pretty clear what his promise is, if elected to office..

The Fact that Obama will Nevah evah be capable of Fulfilling this promise... is soon forgotten..

The Main thing.. Promises like this.. will get him Elected.

You can bet yer Sweet Petunia, it darn will~

By the same standard's McCain is doing the same sorta thing.. only he his aiming his promises to a higher class.

So what we have is two Guys wheeling and Dealing from the same hand...
except to two very differnent types of Social Strata..

The Message is the Same..

Elect me.. .and I will see you all right!

So...

My answer to you pal , is this...

I do not give a Continental.. whomsoevah, is Elected to the Presidency...

For as I have said...

There is not a Dime's Worth of Difference in the Two Political American Parties..

They are both equally vile, and will always bleed the public..

In their game...their slogan is.. once they attain Political Office..

" You can Pull up the Ladder, now. Jack... I am on the Wall!"

Kojo.
yer pal.. who likes ye... and luved yer question.

Edward
If you have seen beyond the lie and condemned it then of course by definition you are not one of the kind I was referring too.

Indeed I am glad to hear from you for I know decent Rangers supporters in real life but have not encountered many on line (because I tend not to visit places where I might to be fair)

On intent I'll try and persuade you. Taking the Iraq war. Was t5he intent behind the event to save the Iraqi people (good) or get our hands on their oil? (Bad)

Thus intent or motive is all that matters in making any judgement. Of course intent is not always easy to establish, no one fools ourselves like ourselves.

It is even more difficult to accept that even where someone acted out of an intent they thought was good AT AND IN THEIR TIME but it turned out, as time unfolds, not to have been the right thing to do, that what they did was not wrong for them and so excusable understandable and ultimately forgiveable.

The nastiness in the BJK slur is the implied meaning that by not doing anything if/when he knew Mr Stein either approved of the crime or TRIED to cover it up.

That to me is at odds with Mr Steins life story and I see you share that view.

I have just supplied you with an argument that puts a context around the court transcripts that I believe stands the rigour of examination. It explains that if Stein did know, why he did nothing - that was standard (although incorrect)procedure to protect the victims at that time.

I cannot say why Corbett was allowed back in or the conditions placed on him, but again it could have been for equally mistaken compassionate reasons and not because whoever let him in was party to the same outlook as Corbett. It is the latter insinuation that makes this slur one of most reprehensible I have come across. It denotes a mind set looking to slur rathere than seek the truth. I am truly glad that this does not apply to your good self.

Your very protest to me is testimony to this and I'm glad to have met you. (cybernetically speaking of course)

re the BJK issue .
The pond-life who stared such a vile campaign are no doubt proud of themselves .
did they feel the need to right wrongs done to the victims of the beast torbitt No .This filth was started for one reason and one reason only TO SCORE PETTY POINTS AGAINST CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB .
Make no mistake the scum that started it had NO thought for the victims or did so out of a moral reason to right any wrongs,They did it pure and simply to satisfy their twisted lust to blacken the name of a great man and a rival FOOTBAL club .
Ed the next time you argue the point ask the clown why he feels they have to sing such a vile song ,ask him if it out of his concern for the victims (I bet he could not even tell you who they were )make no mistake ED the POND-LIFE in your support who utter this slogan are just that bottom feeders .
Do you never ask yourself why the decent fans at your club tolerate these morons ,because you better find the answer quick as they are not going to be allowed to go unnoticed for much longer .
They are dragging your FOOTBALL CLUB down ,the sooner the decent fans realise this the better off your club will be .

Edward

Aye, but in the nicest possible way, so what? Despite Auldheid's points about you, I am a bit disappointed to note that you are in the 'the chant is wrong but' camp. I trust you will reconsider, given Auldheid's general points.

UnequivocalCondemnation CSC - or RSC...

Kojo....

Agree with your views on politicians....@ 4:33 PM

Except...

Its not Bunkum.....

It's BANK-um!!!

The keeper just made a good save to keep Legia 2:1 ahead against Wisla.

Zbyszek might have a good weekend too.

Cheers Kojo

Seven 'dears' - Chuffed to bits.

We're clearly cut from different cloth (our love of the Hoops apart).

As a Capitlast do you not think McCain would be a less bad President for Capitalsts than Obama?

I myself will be a'rooting and a'tooting for an Obama victory on Nov 4. My reasons are many.

Nonetheless, loved your answer.

Re BJK,

The point about bigots is that they use whatever means possible to back their own ignorant case.

This is a campaign to smear a great man whom they hate by any means possible. Most of those involved do not know or indeed care whether he actually "knew" anything or what the effects of that supposed knowledge might have been. it's not a logical thought out position.

It's like racists who believe that black people are less intelligent than white. They have not concluded that based on evidence, they simply propagate the view because it suits their position.

McGraininSpain :- There is at leat one (Bears against Bigotry) but I'm not a member. I do discuss this with other Rangers fans and the ones I talk to tend to agree with me but this may be more down to the folk I am happy to talk with in depth. For my own part it's now limited to asking folk to justify things they say or telling youngsters in the street that when they act in a bad way wearing a Rangers top they are bringing hassle to the club. Sadly I would no longer ask a crowd of folk to stop singing certain songs or acting in a certain way, I'll admit that this may be the cowards way but I'm not as young as I used to be either for defending myself or running.

Ursus - 'a large section of Rangers fans (wrongly in my opinion) do believe that he knew and I find it hard to argue against them' -it is difficult to imagine a less likely crowd as moral crusaders given the relish with which they sing about child abuse and the starvation of a generation

Victims first.

Torbett sullied the name of Celtic, which is painful for all of us, but nothing like as painful as the abuse suffered by Alan Brazil and the others. It's important always to put the victims first.

Rangers have nothing to teach us about this. Everyone has seen the YouTube clip of Willie Waddell in the documentary saying with a wee laugh: “If Rangers lose, the fans go home and hit their wives.”

So if we're talking about abuse, domestic abuse counts too.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. Swansea Bhoy..

Hey! I nevah evah expected to make any converts to my way of thinking..

As I have said innumerable times...

Every one is free to decide what they believe in.

In you case, you are obviously of the Liberal Point of View.

In my book, that is swell, pal.

So .. therefore it follows that you would be an Obama Supporter.

Well.. I have had a look at his background... and MOST IMPORTANTLY.. WHO IS BEHIND HIM!

For you see,pal.

There is no way.. a Young Man of his Humble Beginnings could evah, evah aspire to run for the Highest Office in the Land...or the WOILD...

Without having some heavy hitters behind him...

The Top Guy, behind Obama.is.. a guy called...

GEORGE SOROS... a Multi, Multi, Multi BILLIONAIRE~

And just to thicken the Plot slightly...

George Soros, a Hungarian.. is the sole REPRESENTITIVE in the Good Ole U.S.A. of....

LORD ROTHSCHILD..who resides in England and France.

Does that no gie ye pause...

Who the Heck is this Guy, Obama... and where does his loyalties.. Really, Really Lie...

Lord Rothschild? Wow... Hiv ye hoid o this guy,at awe at awe. and what he represents and controls...?

Anyway.. I dinnae wish to gie ye a lesson in High Finance.. as at the Moment I am going oot wi' my Lady Love fur a Bite.. tae eat! Tae eat~

See ye latah ,pal..

Kojo.

Who likes ye...

The viewfaethewindae is often of WGS and the players, however I wonder if the reserves who are trained by Danny realise just the calibre of the footballer who gives his time to coach them. Instead of a great rendition of Wonderwall they should listen to the great man, maybe they’ll make the first team rather than the pleasure of a transfer to lower division and obscurity. If I was a Celtic reserve it would be 10hr training sessions and full attention to a truly World class footballer. Crack on boys.

has anyone seen pf ayr about these parts recently?

Auld Tim's favourite Polish team hang on to win 2:1. Some great saves by the Legia keeper, Mucha. They must have an assembly line there.

Woodybhoy

Growing up near Greyskull its always been out tradition to spit on the place or near - as we grew older we lightened up a bit and now just immitate the action.

My bhoy used to hold his nose as we drove by.

Now thats a wee bit of banter.

Im glad the pathetic amongst us can admit our childish indiscressions. I believe admitting we have a problem will help us in the long run.........

Token Tim

I can at least say I had some small part to play in the winners victorious campaign. Glad to be of service and as I said at the time regards the donation - whatever your happy with.

Regards you getting caught with your pants down (for anyone not present - the big fella raised the cup high above his head in triumph and one of his team mates pulled hos shorts down round his ankles) I have the digital photos in a secure place. Im sure that I will have no disagreement on any points I raise here from this moment on...............

Auldheid :- Thanks for the reply. I may still not agree with you over the intent theory but from your explanation can understand why you hold it, I suppose it shows the old saying is true, nothing is black or white. Like yourself I'm a great admirer of the late Mr Syein both as a man and a manager and I do try to argue with folk about it. Some listen some don't but sadly there are also those who's minds are closed and just want to hate.

FergusSTB :- I agree, I have yet to meet anyone who sings the chant who feels for the victims.

Bloke109 :- I must have written my point poorly, I'm in no way a member of the "chant was wrong but" group. I think it wrong, 100% wrong, no excuses. The point I was trying to make is that when arguing I find that due to lack of knowledge I have bother answering certain points put to me.

GordonJ :- I agree with you on that one, the intent behind it by a percentage of fans (I"ve no idea and couldn't guess what percentage) is to try and hurt Celtic rather than anything else.
On your racist theory about intelligence it's one that has often been applied to the Irish as well, my own theory in both cases is that a lot of folk (maybe intentionally) mixed up education with intelligence. If you deny someone a decent education (penny schools could only do so much) you can't then use that lack of education to decry them for being thick.

Cheerio

PF was on and posting around lunchtime today

Edward

Are you sure on the organisation 'Bears against bigotry'? A bit too like 'Bhoys against bigotry' - never heard of the bears one.

Celtic_First

As does the physical abuse of young players, as recently claimed by Kevin Gallagher in his time at Dundee United under a current SPL manager.

Edward

Fair enough on your condemnation point - apologies if I was tarring.

Kojo

Obama or McCain?

Which one's in Opus Dei? The Masons? Knights Templar? The Holy Modal Rounders?

Setting free the bears

good to meet you also yesterday

Have you dried out yet?

Teninarow :- I have never claimed that the Ibrox support are moral crusaders.

CelticFirst :- Agreed, it was a very stupid thing to say. Domestic abuse is as bad as any other kind.

Bloke109 :- Thanks for pointing that out I must have had the Celtic group in my mind as I typed. I meant Pride over Prejudice (now Follow with Pride)

Edward
Don't blame you, but there will be occasions when you can influence a single mind using the context of the time explanation.

You never know the ripple effect of that. Cue a favourite wee story of mine....

An old boy is watching a wee laddie on the beach. It is strewn with shellfish marooned by the tide. The wee boy is picking them up one by one and throwing them back in the sea. There are many thousands of them.

The old boy shakes his head and walks up to the wee lad and says.

"Wit are ye daein?
There's thousands of shellfish on the beach.
Ye canny possibly make a difference here"

"Ah jist made a difference tae him" says the wee lad hurling a shellfish seaward.

We can all do what we can to make a difference.

Edward U

I hate doing this to you as you represent the decent side and should not have to apologise for the others BUT.....

When I was last at Ibrox, the house band, The Blue Order, kept beat and time for this chant with their instruments and those gathered round them were singing the chant.

Now that is one area where Mr. Murray could make his influence felt if he has a genuine revulsion against this chant. They should be threatened with removal of official status if they repeat that offence or, better still, he should stuff their instruments up the passage they talk through. I realise that may punish the tuba player more severely than the flute player but them's the breaks.

Can you confirm that the house band play along to this chant still or is it only when Celtic visit?

Lou Macaris betting slip (great name - once saw the bold lou leaving a bookies outside Euston station many years ago!)

Also, great article. I sincerely believe that Platini could equalise or at least even out a little, the playing field by acting on his words about clubs with huge debt.

I would hate to see Celtic go down that road. I hate to see football already there.

Ed - thanks for the reply. Nor would I put myself in danger like that any more. I have done a good few times in the past and frankly felt sick afterwards.

However, I'm not sure I'd stand by those sorts either.

What can you and Bears of your ilk do to reclaim your football club?

If nothing, why carry on?

Ed I'm not trying to be clever here, I just don't get how decent blokes like you can support them.

McGrain

Edward

I remember someone saying that catholics had an inferior education as 45 minutes each day was "lost" to religious education.

I always thought this was tosh - I did my homework from the previous night during IR.

Seriously though I did as well or better in exams and adult life as my other mates who went to the other school.

Whats your view on the schools / education issue

BTW - dont you get fed up being a target on here at times on behalf of people that you dont agree with? Hopefully you are aware there are a lot on here who know where you stand on most things and would not tar you with the same brush.

jinksybhoy

After the 5's, I drove home and had a 10 minute hot shower, a quick meal and a complete change of clothes before hitting CP via the train to Bridgeton. There are some advantages to our residence in hun-dominated Cambuslang.

I was completely refreshed and cosy and really enjoyed the game. Being in the Jock Stein Upper, I could extend my pity to all the North Stand residents who got the first blast of the horizontal rain. They pay extra for their tickets too :-)

SFTB :- I can't answer for this season as I've been at very few games but last season when I rarely missed a game I heard the drum beating out the rythm for the chant at games other than Celtic.

Edward, Fair point on education - but I believe you are giving the bigots too much credit to have thought it out that far. That's my point: we don't like then so they are thick. It's just bigotry.

Ed

Completely off topic - whatever the topic is - what did you do with the Celtic ball Paul passed on to you?

I'm surprised Winston Bergkamp hasn't, yet, included you in TGITW. Time enough yet of course.

Setting free the bears

We went to the Celtic Club before the game - I was not too wet but Celtic Bob was soaked.

We were in the NS Upper and even up there got a fair bit of rain. First time I have seen that in the upper.

Remember when your feeling old and past the golf stage - the tims in the Whitefield await your presence. Its actually the most tim orientated place I have found in Cambuslang to watch Sky / Setanta games so keep it in mind.

Edward
Just keep thinking about the intent theory. Its true. No one knows another's intent at the time of any action, the circumstances surrounding it, the persons own background, what they were taught was right (even if it was'nt), their emotional state etc etc.

Thats why it says
"Judge not lest ye be judged" the sub text of that is we do not know enough to pass judgement so leave it to the Almighty. In our pride though we judge that we know better and pass judgement.

I have done many things in my life where I thought my intent was good i.e thinking of/loving others only to find out as time unfolded that my real motives were based in selfishness and fear not love and I was doing what was really in my own selfish interests. As I said no one fools ourselves like ourselves.

I think I'm better now or at least I know my motives better and am more aware of who will benefit and so can make a more informed choice.

Villarreal at home to Atletico are 0-2 after 30 minutes.

jinksybhoy

I'll bear it in mind.

What's the catering like? It might need to be top notch to tempt WDH, our other Cambuslang resident along.

Do You know John and Margaret C (Italian surname) from up that way?

Jinksboy
You'll like this story.

It was in 1980 (the week John Lennon was shot) and I was doing job interviews for Civil Service jobs.

There was a guy from the Tax Office myself and another. The Tax Office guy was a Protestant.

At the end of the three days he said that he was really impressed by the standard of applicant from Catholic schools. In fact he thought that they were of a higher standard than those from non Catholic schools. It was said without malice it was as if he was just thinking out loud and wondering how to adapt to his change of mind.

I was dipolomatic in my response but the wee de'il inside me was saying

" Aye and there's lots more where I came from. Be afraid, very afraid."

Token Tim

Heartiest congratulations to you and the bhoys, you did well to win the final.

We played Shut up Michael in the semi's and they were the better side, no question. You'll be chuffed to have edged them out, then.

Kenny Clark did brilliantly, especially putting up with argumentative eejits like me!!! In my defence I probably had a fair point but didn't put it across in the best way!!! No messin with the Man in Black though, he sent me to cool my jets and I was back for the semi. Funny that as the lads said they played better without me...;-)

Still waiting on my Red Card-shaped trophy for my being the only dismissal of the tournament, I'll await it eagerly from the engravers, Blantyrekev!!!

Has anybody thought of forming a CQN 11's team? Saw enough on display yesterday to suggest it might be a possibility. Obviously many CQNers are far flung across the continents, but the ones within, say a 30 mile radius of Celtic Park could consider it! We could call the team...The Lisb..... oh stop it.

Anybody have any thoughts on that one?

CQNXI csc

McGraininSpain :- I'll always suport Rangers, that's my team.

Jinkysbhoy :- To answer you questions in reverse order. Firstly, there have been very few on here who equated me with others with different views, almost everyone has asked me as a person rather than as a generic hun when they have spoken to me either on line on the phone or in face to face meetings. Sometimes I get a wee bit fed up when asked to justify something I have previously condemned but at other times I can maybe help dispel a myth (red sock top = up to our knees) at other times I can maybe give an extra dimension to a point that hasn't been raised. I don't in any way mean folk go easy on me, far from it, but they do tend to attack me for points I've made rather than the behaviour of other fans.
I have heard the same thing about Catholic schools, that you wouldn't learn as much because of R.E classes but that one I didn't believe as I had Catholic cousins and pals who showed it was nosnsense.
On the separate schools issue, I'm going to make myself very unpopular by saying I'm against them. Before any one jumps in to flame me let me explain that it's not for the reasons that are normally used. My own opinion, and that's all it is, an opinion, is that there should be one type of general school provided by the state. I've said general type as I know that kids with disabilities and special need often need a separate school. The schools provided should not teach religion except as a comparitive subject and should not be under any influence or control fro religous authorities whether they be a church or a pressure group.
If anyone wants their children to have faith teaching beyond that provided at home and in church then I think they should have to pay for a private school, whether it be a Christian, Muslim, Jewish or Hindu school I don't think it should be state provided.
I know other will disagree but I'm basing those thoughts on my own views as an Athiest and not trying to discriminate against any particular church or religion, it's the same view that makes me think there should be no Lords Spiritual in parliment.

All I could see 60 minutes into the match was the black, fiery chasm of a ruined season. As I told my Dutch fiancee 20 minutes later, "Thank God for the Dutch!"

E.D.B :-The (Rangers) ball that Paul presented to me is on top of the display shelves in my living room and I'm always pleased to tell visitors the story behind it.

Auldheid :- I've been thinking on it myself and finding myself partially agreeing with you especially over the self fooling. Maybe I should keep reminding myself of the point I made earlier, very little is a clear case of black or white.

On the Stein issue - an appaling slur designed to offend. There shouldn't be any debate on it.

On US presidents. Funny, I accept there may never be huge differences between elephants & donkeys (you have to be super rich to even have a bash in our 'democracies') but I'm with Swanseabhoy. Anything but more gungho 'nuke em all' nonsense and a black guy in the white house has a nice symbolism. Always time later to feel betrayed - we're (labour voters anyhow) used to it after all!

The abuse continues ,a 17yr old lad from Hamilton is on the recieving end, when will the abuse be over SFA SPL Alec Salmond Players Union boss, time we heard from you lot, as we are sick of hearing from THEM

Anti-Irish racist abuse on Scottish football terraces must stop - Joe McHugh

Joe McHugh writes to the Minister for Foreign Affairs asking him to move against the racist abuse of Ireland u-21 international James McCarthy

Donegal’s Joe McHugh TD has called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs to write to Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond MP requesting action against the racist abuse of a young Irish SPL footballer by bigots on Scottish football terraces.

Sections of some SPL crowds are abusing Glasgow native James McCarthy (17) for his recent decision to reject an overture from Scottish manager George Burley and declare for the Republic of Ireland. McCarthy, who plays at midfield for Hamilton Academical FC in the SPL, is quickly establishing himself as one of the most promising teenagers in British league football.

James McCarthy has been subjected to torrents of racist abuse from the terraces since his declaration, most recently at the Hamilton v St. Mirren match at New Douglas Park last Saturday.

The matter was brought to Deputy McHugh’s attention by a Donegal journalist who attended the Hamilton v St. Mirren game last weekend. James McCarthy’s grandmother was born in Donegal.

“The racist abuse to which James McCarthy is being subjected on the terraces at some SPL venues this season because of his declaration for Ireland is hurtful for James’s family and is offensive to this country. I have contacted the Minister for Foreign Affairs requesting that he write to Scotland’s First Minister and to the Scottish Football Association in relation to this matter.

“I have also asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs to request that the Scottish authorities take action against those Glasgow Rangers who sing the ‘Famine Song’. The ‘Famine Song’ is an anti-Irish racist song that has been condemned as racist by the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ campaign. The Rangers v Hamilton game takes place next weekend.

“James McCarthy is an exceptionally gifted young player. He made his senior professional debut when he was just 15 in a Scottish Championship Div1 game against Queen of the South FC in September 2006. He is the youngest senior goal-scorer in Hamilton Academical FC’s history and this season he is playing an important role for the club as they attempt to establish themselves in the SPL.

“James scored the winning goal and collected the man-of-the-match award in their historic 2-1 away victory over Aberdeen last month. It was Hamilton’s first win at Pittodrie since 1930. He has played at youth and U-21 levels for Ireland and his decision to declare for our senior team is a very positive development. He will be an important player for Ireland for the next 15 years.

“If the Scottish soccer authorities and the Scottish government are serious about stamping out racism in Scottish soccer they should protect James McCarthy and prevent the despicable ‘Famine Song’ from being sung on the terraces. The Irish government has a responsibility to bring its influence to bear on the Scottish authorities on behalf of this Irish player and his family in relation to this matter.”

Edward, Maybe the schools debate is like the songs debate - been done to death. But your views on schooling are exactly the same as my own. I start from a position of separating religion from the state entirety.

Like yourself, this is not an attack on Catholic schools per sae. So called non denominational schools by law have to have assemblies that are predominately Christian, which I believe is also wrong.

I also believe that schooling all children together would possibly help to bring people together.

Finally, I believe that the indoctrination of children from an early age is morally wrong. There are no Catholic or Protestant five year olds, just children of Catholic or Protestant parents. Kids should be left to make up their own mind when old enough to understand, not enrolled in a religion as babies and told what to believe.

Edward Ursus' contribution tonight has been exactly what sets this blog apart.

I'm glad he's on here - now let's address, unemotively, the points he raised:

The court transcript.
The non reporting to the police.
Torbett being allowed back into CBC.

As was pointed out, Esther Rantzen's Childline campaign in - When was it? - provided a watershed moment in our attitude to child abuse. These events at CBC took place years before that moment.
Anyone?

Gordon_J: spot on. My kid goes to a Church of Wales School and it narks the heck out of me that she gets all this religious gubbings spoon fed her day in and day out. Trouble is its a really good school and she likes it, has good friends, etc.

If its ok to have religious schools I'd like to see atheist schools given similar prominance, or how about socialist schools...

First chance to post since yesterday. Just wanted to say thanks to Paul, Kevin, Des, John and everyone else who made the day go as well as it could in the atrocious weather, also to the fine girls up the stairs who kept everyone supplied with tea and biscuits and put up with my bhoys annoying them every 2 minutes!

Congratulations to TTT's team on winning the Final. I was rooting for the guys from our group (Group C) who swatted us away all to easily in the group, particularly 7 Is The Magic Number (craggy island gaa), they were't too shabby. No excuses from us, only 2 of us really turned up on the day. Need to try and get a bit more quality for next year I think! Highlight for me was hitting the post in our 2nd game, which just about sums up how bad we were!

Just to say thanks to the coach for the young bhoys, Andy if I recall. To give up his time in that weather to stay and coach 3 boys went way above and beyond (only my two scallys and Kenny Clarks boy(bhoy?)). Also to taggsybhoy for staying behind after the Final to be keeper for the penalty kicks for the boys.

Paul, good to finally meet you and catch up with some of the guys I've met before from the pub. Hats off to Oldtim, it may well be the only time I see someone turn up with a carry out which included of a decanter of whiskey! Class. Curly, I hope you both enjoyed your hospitality and the game.

Thanks also to Kenny Clark and Danny McGrain, in particular Kenny who reffed from the start instead of only the final, especially considering the howling weather.

Team name sorted for next year anyway, Knocked Out Before The Pubs Open!

Auldheid

Opportunities like that come along infrequently - Im sure there was a wee smirk on your face at that point in time.

Reminds me of the "compliment" your not a bad guy........ for a tim

Edward

Growing up in Glasgow the schools thing was taken as read. It was normal that a lot of my mates went to the other primary school - but I wished we went to the same one. When it was time to go to the big school I wanted to change to the "Proddy School". It was across the road from me where Lourdes was 2 miles away and either a 40 minute walk or a bus that my mum could not really afford. Also most of my nightime mates were prods so I wanted to change (not religion or heven forbid give up on the best team in the world) Just wanted to be with my mates. Didnt understand why my proddy mum said no - probably my old mans influence.

I think overall it would definitely break down a lot of barriers and other issues at a young age - however I would imagine many catholics would prefer to keep the religious influence in the schools. And I understand that point of view.

My opinion (for what its worth) I would be for a standard school for all and if anyone wants anything else then they can opt out. I am now prepared for some flak too but what the heck.

Im glad to hear that you feel that you are asked to speak for yourself and I think you do and always like to hear your opinions on these matters. It helps balance my views as much as possible.

Jinkysbhoy, had a peek at your bebo and added you, just in case you were wondering who it is. Maybe a CQN bebo community growing!

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. Swansea Bhoy...

I did not quite finish my thought,as I was interrupted..

I have already mentioned that Obama's Sugar Daddy, is none other that Georgie Soros..of Lord Rothschild's Stable of agents.

Therefore, Bottom line....

Obama, is owned bought and Paid for, by the World's Bankers.

On the Other side of the Room

McCain... last April... paid a visit to Israel..with his very best buddy, Mr.Leiberman.. a Former Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee...but now is a registered, Independant. And a very staunch McCain supporter.

Any how, Lord Rothschild, who appeared at the Fund Raiser for McCain, and indeed was throwing the party, is not allowed to contribute, officially, to American Political Parties,as he, Lord Rothschild, has Dual British/ French citizenship...and is forbidden by the Government from doing so.

Howevevahhhhhhhhhh...

It was not against the rules for Lord Rothschild to conduct an event, such as this Fundraiser...which he did for McCain.

At One Thousand Dollars A head... it added quite a few Pounds of the finest Ayrshires, to the McCain Political Kitty..

It turns out the McCain is no stranger at the Rothschild Country Residence, in Jolly old England...and Mc Cain has spent many a happy hour in the company of the Grand old Lord.

My dear friend..I hope you are following me in this.

So...

What do we have here, in essence.

In essence or otherwise, we are now fully apprised of the Fact, that BOTH CANDIDATES are owned, lock, stock and Barrel... by...

The World Bankers.

Aha!...and so was Lenin et al, as weel... but, that is for another time.

If you think that Obama will do anything that is any different than that of what McCain would do...regarding Foreign relations etc...

Please think again..

Obama, will do as exactly as he is told... or... weel... there are always other methods, that the World Bankers can use.. to bring any recalcitrant, lackey... to heel.

Obama and McCain... using the exact same Song Book... only singing different verses~

West Wales Celt,

Socialist schools - indeed!

I've always argued that politics is a fine analogy in the schools debate. If a bunch of people of a similar viewpoint wanted the state to pay for schools that taught children from age five that theirs was the one true political system it would be widely decried as indoctrination.

Also, of we have state funded RC schools how can you argue against similar provision for Muslims. And Sikhs. And ....

You might want to catch this "movie" when it gets here

I'm not arguing one way or another just interested in another angle on what we believe.

Your more than welcome mate

I only started on Bebo a few months ago but its a great wee idea to put your videos, photos, music and CELTIC on.

A CQN network on there works for me

How do you get it onto your profile page?

Who would have thought that Juande Ramos, a coach with experience and great success, could have gone 8 league matches, 4 at home, without winning any of them!?

As has been discussed on here many times, a winning coach is very hard to find and even harder to keep. He moves on, he retires or he just suddenly loses it (it seems).

Three in a row was magic wasn't it? If Gordon somehow makes it 4...these years that we are living and breathing now would be up there with the very best of times.

C'mon the hoops.

Auldheid,

I've read about it but hadn't seen the trailor until now - thanks. I will be interested to see the film.

Unbelievable in La liga

I got your E mail I did not respond however, your payment proposial is absolutely fine - No problem at all mate.

I need a favour if at all possible, I,m looking to buy a UK phone and I,m looking to basically got a really really cheap phone (Really Cheap) that is particularly cheap for sending texts obviously I,m in Scotland alot to see the green and white hoops - seen as your of work this week IF AND ONLY IF your near a phone shop can you go in and check out prices for Phones and in particular how much it costs to send texts.

With my Irish phone I get absolutely fleeced in term of cost to send texts and to make and receive calls when I,m in Scotland and quite frankly I,m sick of it.

As I say I dont want you to go out of your way only if your near a phone shop.

Ah no

2 quick goals from Atletico and its 4-4

c'mon Villareal, if we are related to you, you'll get the winner in injury time!

Anybody think we might go Henrik? 6 month swansong. Do you think we might he might be waiting to see if we get to the UEFA Cup before deciding. Unfinished business for him in ghat tournament for us. He wants a challange before he hangs the boots up. What better challenge?

I'm going to stop smoking the old wacky backy now:)

Kojo

9 dears - stop it, I'm welling up.

I get the drift of what you're saying and sort of agree with some of it but, surely there'll be at least differences of emphasis in a McCain presidency versus an Obama presidency.

I had no idea that Obama had strong links with Soros or Rothschild and I can't say that I'm very impressed by it but nonetheless I believe that there is less chance (not no chance, just less chance) of a disasterous attack on Iran for example under an Obama presidency than a McCain one.

Better knock this on the head or the non Politico's will have an aneurism.

Hail Hail Kojo

I salute your opinion. TBH, one of the peculiarities of this blog is the big old catholic school tie and pro-catholic school thing often expressed. On another Celtic site (much younger audience)I malinger on, a huge majority said it was time for separate schooling to go and to be honest they are mainly atheist so why have the division when you don’t even believe in the thing that is being divided up.

A long experience of living in Northern Ireland led me to conclude that divided education has been a catastrophe there, a much bigger issue than in Scotland. Unlike modern Scotland, residential areas are also very strongly divided (either by one-sided villages or one sided areas within towns/cities) except the posher areas which lets face it are not the problem. When combined with segregated housing, segregated schools there have basically removed the main opportunity to mix for about 80% of the population. I had friends from both sides and as a piggy in the middle outsider I could see the sad sad misunderstanding 'that lot have two heads' the two sides had of each other.

Its criminal IMO that the parishes and the authorities in Northern Ireland cannot address the two communities different needs (sporting, cultural, certain subjects)under one roof. I think the majority actually want integration (in a luke-warm way) but a minority of social conservatives/unconscious bigots on both sides really hate the idea so its vote losing danger is there and no big parties take a stand on integration. IMO, however, the biggest obstacle would be the RC church. If only the latter would take up the Sunday School idea and leave schooling alone. The catholic part of my family were alienated by the control freakery and this is just one aspect of it.

Im not sure mate I,m phone illiterate but cheers for the idea I will check it out.

Cheers for that.

Reading John Fallon in the Celtic View this week mentioning his disappointment at the result in Seville.

I've never watched the game since but can honestly say I had a terrific few days leading up to the match and wouldn't change it for anything. Stayed in the same hotel as wee Joe Miller in Rota and what a time we had. And were made very welcome by all the "normal" holidaymakers and American aircrew from the next door NATO depot.

Unfortunately I also attended the losing final in Milan in 1970 but the contrast between then and Seville was night and day.

Villareal - Athletico Madrid match was a cracker!

I bet the Athletico manager is regretting not putting on Kun Aguero at 4-2!

Roccobhoy

Im not sure on the Skype phone - maybe someone else can advise

2 options on the UK cell

As Edward says - get your own phone unlocked (cost around £15) and get a SIM here for £5. Drawback there is you will put your ROI phone off when you are here so out if contact on it and also can damage the phone a wee bit when changing sims regular.

Option 2 (this is best if the Skype one is no use) I have a few phones here - I get a new one every year on my contract - I will give you one and I will get a new SIM for it. Its around 10p a text on pay as you go but if your calling home Im not sure what the charge is although I think if its an ROI mobile I dont think its too bad - will ask tomorrow.

I will get it sorted for you and have it ready when you come over for the Utd game.

Gordon_

I said my piece on northern Ireland but you have perfectly summed up my views on the same subject in Scotland. To many parents try to make their kids mini-mes. Let them make their own mind up.

Also agree with Jinkys thing about the craziness (selfishness??) of separating a wee kid form its pals and sending kids on hour long bus journeys while ignoring the school 5 minutes away where his wee pals are. I know wee pals of mine who were subject to that and the school they were sent to was a lot rougher than the one next door.

o1bhoy
If the blog goes down again we could have a skype back up lol
Bob

themanfromghordknowswhere,

I can well remember being totally confused when I started school and my wee pal from two doors up was going to a different one.

And we were both Celtic fans!

themanfromghordknowswhere

I went to Albufeira in Portugal about 15 years ago and there were many Irish kids who had never met their other halfs. As the week went by the swimming pool and my boy sorted that out. Before long all the barriers were down and they played away happily with each other. But the parents kept their distance.

I said to Mrs Jinx (the second) that ws the future of the Irish there - if only they could mix at schools etc it would speed up the peace process by 100 times.

And I think it would be better here too. Hopefully in my lifetime I will see all this crap end.

Guys

The songs debate is/was bad enough.

A wee word on Skype.

In April 2007, I chanced to be in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

I spent a few days asking Rioskorrie and everyone if they knew of a way of catching Kilmarnock against Celtic down there in Rio Grande do Sul.

Rioskorrie said he didn't know of any Tim-friendly set-ups that far south, but went to amazing lengths to get me up to Rio for the game, at one point even offering to make me guest of honour for the day at the Fergus McCann Rio CSC, an honour of which I am not worthy. Anyway, I couldn't go.

On the Saturday, there was a chance we could win the league if Hearts could win or draw at Ibrox and a London-based CQNer at the time, called Dave, (does he still post?) fixed me up to follow it.

Here's what we did. He logged onto the online Radio Scotland commentary and I Skyped him. He went to the shops and I was left following the game. Hearts were winning 0-1, but the magnificence of Barry Ferguson proved too much and Rangers won 2-1.

Next day, Whitedoghunch obliged. He logged on to Radio Scotland, I Skyped into him and ended up doing the CQN commentary with him of Nakamura's last-minute free-kick and our title win. All for free.

To cut to the chase, Skype is magic.

Ed Urs - I fear I have offended you and that's not my intention. I know Rangers is your team and that's that. In some ways I admire your certainty and I am not seeking that you should have to justify that.

My starting point was your dedication to an anti-racist agenda on this site.

What I cannot get my head round is how you handle your commitment to that agenda whilst standing cheek by jowel with racists in support of your team.

I am truly interested in how more Rangers supporters such as yourself get mobilised and how you get your voice across.

It is overdue Ed.
