Change of formation pays dividends for Celtic

| | Comments (460)
As well as being an excellent away win, last night's performance was a bit different from normal for Celtic.

The quick passing game that Gordon Strachan talked about long ago was in evidence; two-touch pass-and-move football happened from kick off until Kilmarnock had lunged, swiped and elbowed their last.

For three years now I have been saying Nakamura (in particular) needs the rest of the team to be playing at on his level, or else he is likely to become a spectator, standing idly on the wing.

Last night he had McGeady, Maloney and even the oft-maligned Donati, all capable of bringing the ball under control with their first touch and moving it on.

Time will tell if this type of football is durable enough to grind out results week-in-week-out, we watched plenty of this in the 1990s during what we now refer to as one of the darkest periods of our history, so I suspect a more robust look will be required, but last night we got an important lesson in how to bring out the best in some of our talented players.

Even Massimo Donati, cut adrift for over six months, clicked into place in the company of others blessed with instant control.

On a different subject; Nakamura's goal direct from a free kick was outstanding, but did you notice the part Shaun Maloney played in proceedings?  Combe in the Kilmarnock goal was covering his right post, where the ball eventually went, but Nakamura walked away from the ball seconds before hitting it, leaving Maloney in the most natural position to take the kick.

On seeing this, Combe shifted left, towards the post Maloney would most likely aim for, which gave Nakamura the space to score.

Two free kick experts are a whole lot more effective than one.

Hail, hail

Well pleased with last night. The team team played well, collectively and as individuals, and in the face of traditional Ayrshire hacking (nae offence Ed, but Killie have got form for the more agricultural style against us) a few players made sure that it wouldn't be tolerated without reprisal.

Special mention to Scott Brown - the fella is coming on to a game and will be a player for us.

STANDING UP

my first third now onwards to the treble !!!!!!!!

but one game at a time and this Hearts game is a biggy for us.

Morning Bhoys

When is the draw for the semi,s??

Kitalba: To my mind Scott Brown has been one of our best players this season. I thought he was immense against Hibs last week and he was tireless last night. He was right at the heart of all the impressive football we played. Granted he gave the ball away a few times but he is still young and I think he should be one of the first names on the team sheet every week on current form.

Last night was one of our most impressive performances of the season so far given the shocking tactics empliyed by Jim "Get in aboot them" Jefferies. To play the football we did against some appalling tackles deserves immense credit.

Boruc: Good safe hands throughout and calm on the ball. Thought he could have been a bit more decisive at the goal but a great save from a Taouil free kick.

Defence: I thought Caldwell and O'Dea played well. Hinkel picked up where he left off on Saturday (would still like to see him have the courage of his convictions and use the pace he seems to have in his locker). Wilson did very well despite playing out of position (thought he could have been a bit stronger at the first goal).

Midfield: For me, Aiden was superb last night. He gave the ball away at times and needs to be careful where he tries his trickery but he burst away from players all night and was brave cutting in front of the Killie hatchet men. Brown has a really good football brain and all the one touch stuff we played came through him and Aiden. The move for the goal was awesome. Shaun didn't have his best game last night but stuck to the task, as did Naka despite that thug Skelton being brought on purely to kick him around.

Up front: Skippy scored one, won the free kick for the second and was involved in the move for the third. A great performance. Add that to the two goals he set up on Saturday and you would have to say he is hitting the form we know he is capable of. Could do with him rediscovering the hat-trick touch from last season. Sheridan looks confident on the ball and a real prospect.

Strachan: Credit to the wee man for playing footballers against hatchet men and asking them to pass the ball. Great football and I hope we can carry the winning streak on into Sunday's game. November looks a more difficult month for the dark side, Sunday's game apart.

Mon the hoops!

I've been watching for you to post to thank you for the salmon but I didn't know you were going to change your name! It was terrific though I did have to share it with in-laws. Many thanks again. Hopefully we can have a beer before the game on Wednesday in BB's

Great performance last night. Scott Brown looks to be back to his arrogant strutting best. Loved the way he laughed at the Killie cluggers.

On another note, when do you think we'll see the media criticising Rangers for not slating the TFS ? Surely they must ? The club issue a statement saying we asked you not to sing it last night because we don't want you arrested, and not one word of condemnation for the song ?

A statement like that is deliberately worded, criticism of the song is deliberately left out. This sends out one powerful message - The powers that be in Ibrox do not feel TFS is morally wrong.

Ed - If you're there, what does that say to you about your club ?

How many fouls did Pascali commit after he was booked? I felt he should have had a second booking for persistent 'Hacking', I really appreciated the way Celtic tried to play football despite the agricultural tackling from Jeffries Ayrshire Coos. I felt that Thompson bottled it when it was obvious, to me, that a few Kilmarnock players deserved second bookings and ultimately early baths. Kilmarnock were the dirtiest team I have witnessed this season. What was Wilson booked for? Persistent fouling. Was it his first or secont Foul?

Good result at a hostile venue.

morning all
good stuff last night and long may jefferies record versus us continue .
well said craiginho could not have put it better myself

"We gifted them the first goal," he said. "The smallest man in the box scored the header and that was disappointing. You can't give goals away that cheaply against Celtic. We got in and about them in the second half and got it back to 2-1 but we didn't do the right things at that point. We should have put them under pressure after we scored but we didn't do that and then they broke away and scored a good goal.

In Moaning Jim Jeffries own words - "We got in and about them".

My interpretation of that is, there were clear instructions to kick anything that moved.

Never been a fan of this guy to be honest.

Danny Invisible should have been sent off for his elbow on Hinkel

it was a shocker and caught him a cracker

It is still early in the season but I think the Ghod-like Caldwell must be leading in the running for our Player of the Year followed by Skoosh and then Sammi.

Strangely enough being one of the few posters on here that has been a fan of the Ghod-like Caldwell since he joined Celtic and have never doubted his divine talents I didn't think his performance last night warranted MOTM that it was an average perfomance by the Ghod-like Caldwell. I think it is all you Sheep who have jumped on the Ghod-like Caldwell bandwagon, you are falling all over yourself to lavish praise on the Ghod-like Caldwell because you now realise that you have been a numpty that couldn't recognize talent when you see it.:-))and you have finally he is quite good.

We are definitely a different team away from home - at least in the league - this season. The tempo's faster and we seem to get into the opponents danger areas, ie about 30 yards from goal, much easier.

I find myself looking forward to away games more than the home games now.

Does anybody know the date for the final - need to know so I can avoid a potential weekend away - normally around mid-March but can't find it anywhere.

Tully.

"Uh huh huh huh".

We was good. Dodgy ref could have protected us a bit - he could even have disallowed their goal for the obvious foul on wee Willo at the back stick.

But no complaints from me really - other than imagine what we could play like with a proper left back!

I'll sign the Caldwell for Captain, but not the Brown - he has enough to do (and is doing it very well!)

Sorry Mr 67,but i must disagree with one of your points,Donati was a passenger last night, living,as i do,in the US,i only get to see games on TV,but, that does not blind me to this guys ineffectiveness,i seldom heard his name spoken by the commentators and that,i feel is significant,he was simply not at the races and,i feel it would be best all round if he were allowed to quietly slip away come January.

Poor Massimo- 'Che galida manina'.

He has more u-21 caps for Italy than anyone else, and has never made the big team. He had a quiet first half and a couple of moments in the second half which were careless.

I thought Aiden through the middle was very effective and should feature more in the big book of Pendograms.

The second and third Celtic goals last night were excellent.

The scavengers need blood so it is time to pick on Donati since Naylor did not play, considering it was a rare start for him I thought he was one of our better players last night. Aiden and Maloney drifted in and out throughout all of the game last night, Skoosh came on to his game in the second half and Naka was getting hack to bits, it was Donati that kept the midfield going in the first half and then tired understandably in the latter part of the second-half.

The highlight of last night for me was the expert? punditry. BBC showed us how celtic changed the system so that the wingers came inside and the fullbacks bravely provided the width... excuse me? Naka on the right, aiden on the left, I think I may have seen that one before... pat nevin should keep to watching europa league football on channel 5, until an english team do well and itv take it off them.

Fhantastic performance last night from our team and our support.I thought the referee was dreadful but i just knew Naka was gonna mete out some justice as he stepped up to take that free kick, beautiful!!!
On another note does anyone know if there's to be a minutes silence for remembrance sunday at the Hearts game?
If so what are the precedents for this? ie going back over the years has this happened before in recent times.
I worry in light of Hearts history with losing players, in i think the 1st world war, that they'll want to hold this but don't know for sure.
I can see this being a banana skin for us as the scottish media will pounce on the Celtic support if there's non compliance,or worse, booing, vitriol and or a rendition of TBOTOB especially when their favourites are being regularly pilloried and are yet again revelling in their siege mentality.
Obviously this is a charged topic for many Celtic fans but we should never mock the dead PERIOD

For any who can't bring themselves to accede to the demands of this hypothetical situation, might i suggest that we retain our dignity.Protest by turning your back to the pitch and standing in silence.
Also remember that most people associate remembrance sunday with WW2 and fighting FASCISM that list will include
Artur Boruc
Andreas Hinkel
Glenn Loovens
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink
Georgious Samaras
and whomsoever amongst our Scottish/Irish players descendants and our OWN supporters descendants: Grandfathers,Great Uncles etc
Remember Remembrance Sunday wasn't invented to glorify the fallen in Ireland,The Balkans,Afghanistan or Iraq.

Henriks Sombrero,

If it was a small minority singing this song I believe rangers would have condemned it, but I think they know there are too many like minded Huns for them to speak up. They won’t bite the hand that feeds. As for the media? Ditto, they need the Hun pound. IMO of course.

Great performance last night, made all the sweeter for me by the fact the two players (Naka & Aiden) getting abuse from the Kilmarnock fans answered them in the best way possible. :¬)))

Oh sorry and Naka too.
If we were to boo on Sunday i think the media and the many outraged phone in punters would attempt to paint us as Green fascists,i know i know, but don't doubt it. If we were to transgress we'd be splattered all over the worlds media for it,they'd make sure of it.

Re: Remembrance Day is the 11th, Remembrance Sunday is the 9th so I wouldn't expect a minutes silence this weekend.

o1bhoy

Sammi can't win the player of the year if he is not playing, so get the magic sponge oot, give him a rub then get him starting before he goes further down the list of favourites.

That said, whenever it is the silence should be respected.

For some reason I can't remember if there is usually a minutes silence around Rememberance Sunday or not. I'd half expected that the whole card would have it but I might be wrong. Anyone got any ideas?

Either way it will fall on our home game v Motherwell on Sat 8th, and there is less chance of the home crowd misbehaving than factions of our away support.

EHIY

Call me a wee cynic if you want to. God knows… I’ve been called a hell of a lot worse. I suppose if I stop to think about it, then some of the things that I have been called in the past could easily be construed vindictively sectarian, racist even. Still… why should I bother since such obscenities, through decades’ long precedence, and countenance, now appear to have outgrown the law and the conscience of the law enforcers of the land.

Or am I getting events confused? Should I not just accept the abuse as a birthright? Let me take a wee moment to reflect. I thought it went something like this…

The Police have stated that the socially repugnant ‘Famine Song’ is sectarian and illegal.

To do so, then by logical extension, and so as not to waste the public prosecutors time and tax payers money, they, the police, must be reasonably confident that the courts would be in agreement with their, the police, protracted assessment that the socially repugnant ‘Famine Song’ is sectarian and illegal.

Although not unequivocally, officials from Rangers football club, to all intents and purposes, endorse the concerns of the police, inasmuch as they too advise their supporters, in words of their own choosing, that the socially repugnant ‘Famine Song’ is sectarian and illegal.

Even some of the more obtusely-acute media mongrels, against their better judgement, have now been dragged to the conclusion, and subsequent profession, that the socially repugnant ‘Famine Song’ is sectarian and illegal. They have even printed it in their own handwriting, but again, in words of their own choosing.

The responsible Scottish public know that the socially repugnant ‘Famine Song’ is sectarian and illegal, but they meekly procrastinate in a collective apathy. Still even Rip Van Winkle finally shook off his slumber!!

So after my reflection… I am even more confused. If the socially repugnant ‘Famine Song’ is sectarian and illegal, and the police, the public, the courts, the media, Rangers Football Club, and maybe Rip Van Winkle himself, if he ever does wake up, are all in accord, that the previously mentioned, socially repugnant ‘Famine Song’ is sectarian and illegal… then why the hell do the authorities insist on their obnoxious litigable stagnation?

Their inactions make them look comically impotent and consequently dispels any public confidence in their ability to deal with more serious, and perhaps more physically orchestrated, sectarian crimes.

Similar crimes such as witnessed by countless millions during the recent Manchester Riots; whereby, to date, none appear to have been retro-arrested to face account.

So okay, I hold my hand up, I am a cynic. Following the Manchester Riot - and the inaction - and the persistent flaunting of the law with the socially repugnant ‘Famine Song’ that is sectarian and illegal - and the inaction - I am now resigned to the fact that, in my opinion, the powers that ‘be’ in the UK, ‘be’ no more than charlatan of purpose and maladroit of conviction.

So after all that, maybe I'm not so confused after all, since new obscenities, mimic, old obscenities, that through decades’ long precedence, and countenance, are now a 21st Century anti-law to themselves... in our land, Scotland, too. So the written law is toilet. Well it is according to some sections of society.

Therefore I'll go on accepting my abusive birthright, marinated in bile, vile and invective and establishment sanctioned too, but I will not accept it in silence.

I will perpetually remind them their dignified disgraces.

More Shame them… Scotland's Powers that not be, than Scotland’s Shame itself.

Any observance of a minute's silence on Sunday Nov 9th by the Celtic support will be closely monitored by all an sundry.

My take on it is that my grandpa had a season ticket at Celtic Park and he took me to the game when I was a wee boy. He fought in World War Two, and lost three brothers, two on the same day.
Pretty sure that if he was still around he'd want to make sure the minute's silence was observed impeccably by Celtic fans.

NBT that might well be the case, and there would have been may Celtic supporters in the trenches between 1914-18 and in Europe, Africa and Asia from 1939-45. There were also an awful lot of Celtic supporters, because of their background, (including my (Irish) Great-grandfather, and grandfather) in reserved occupations miners, railwaymen etc. A lot of the Irish diplaced by the Famine that landed in Scotland ended up working in the Lanarkshire coalfields.

Henrik
Hugh Keevins on Clyde said (and I paraphrase from memory)

Mention TFS at your peril. I received 47? e mails today that I had to delete and a nasty? text message. I do not know how they got my number and I have asked the police to look into it.

I think that there is a thuggish element behind this so apart from pressure from editors to stick to "the sound of silence" maybe, just maybe some journalists are more than aware of personal danger?

It all however adds to the pile of evidence that there is indeed poison at the core of Rangers.

This article starts to open up that debate.

The author promises more.

Inkybhoy / Raveheart35

My own thoughts are much more simplistic on this. A massive number of very decent men and women lay down their lives to fight the fascism of the Nazis under Hitler. They deserve to have their deaths remembered with dignity by those generations following behind them.

EHIY

I'm with EHIY

Auldheid

It's not the first time journalists have received threats over their names being attached to stories, indeed, about a year or so ago, FF had a thread naming Keevins and a couple of other guys, on of whom is a good friend of mine, a Celtic supporter, and asking the question' Are they legitimate targets?'. Nasty stuff when the language of paramilitary organisations is thrown in.

Hi there, anyone got a link to the goals? Tried you tube but no dice.

inkybhoy

Funny how that was never publicised, or at least not to the same degree as the publicity received about "internet bigots" who posted the street where nacho novo lived.

Donati had a fine 60 minutes last night. His problem appears to be stamina. He is woefully short of match practice, but his skills are excellent.

Our first goal was a result of his charge through the midfield, resulting in the consecutive corner kicks, from which Skippy benefited.

I may be wrong, but I don't ever recall a minutes silence on Remembrance Sunday.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that until fairly recent times, football was not played on a Sunday. Certainly not at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Therefore, this hypothesis should be left in the land of the hypothetical.

kitalba
Well put though i think they're,and that includes RFC,The Media,The Law,The Scottish Politicos bar some and The Establishment more frightened of it being labelled what it really is RACIST.They'll avoid calling it that at all costs because the PC brigade would have their guts for garters.IMO they're relying on the loyalty of the Rears support in upholding the law of the land to smooth this over then SDM and Dignity FC will take the credit. What it says about us though is that we're in their eyes Untermensch and the written law as applied to the Irish in scotland 1st,2nd or 3rd generation is, Toilet!

Thanks EHIY but wont work in my territory apparently. Any other places I could find them?

All of the people named were employees of the same paper. the decision was made to deny the clowns that posted the thread the oxygen of publicity.

Auldheid,
I had to laugh at this part of the article

"If it takes little electronic reminders to Rangers fans not to indulge in racist singing because they are at risk of arrest then so be it."

I was just sitting here thinking about Zapping a few of them with the the push of a button at the slightest utterance(sp) of TFS.

gsu

Paul, Pat Nevin slated Coombe for moving to the side the wall was covering just before Naka hit the ball - but didn't mention that Maloney could have put he ball in that corner. Very similar to Naka least important goal ever, the one against them in the last minute. The keeper had no clue where the ball was going with Naka and Maloney over a central free kick.

I'm surprised anyone is slating Donati. I though he had a fine game last night. Ok, he tired after 65 or so, but then he isn't playing so what do you expect? His passing was crisp and accurate and he had several good runs forward too.

Standing up - for the WORLD CHAMPION Philadelphia Phillies!

inkybhoy

Probably the best way to deal with people like that.

It's starting to become a trend that I'm posting on non-football related stuff before getting to the team! Must get that sorted...

So, onto last night. Apart from getting hoofed up and down the park by Ayrshire's hammerthrowers and the lack of protection from the man in the middle, I have absolutely nothing negative to say.

A great result and some very good performances, with no failures. I'll add my agreement to those hailing Brown - as recently as last Tuesday night I felt the need to defend him against some overly harsh criticism on here, and on my first visit to Parkhead this season on Saturday I had the 'pleasure' of hearing the 2 mineshafters sat behind me slate him as "hiding", "hopeless" and as one particular 4 letter word that even Jonathan Ross wouldn't get away with being aired! But they were on their feet with everyone else when he waltzed in and slammed the 4th in.

McGeady was looking back towards his best although he still needs to work on his decision making - but that will come. Skippy looked sharper and we'll need him over the coming weeks. Caldwell was as safe as ever and O'Dea slotted in and did not look out of place. Hinkel seems to be coming onto a game and deserves time since he's never really had a consistent run in a settled side.

Special mention to Donati - despite what some are saying on here he played well last night. In the first half he looked sharp and hungry, he demanded the ball off the back line and looked to play forward passes and join up the play. He faded as the game went on but that's only to be expected given his lack of top team action. I've been a critic of him and he's got a long way to go if he wants to hang around, but more performances like last night and he'll be on the right track. I said a the start of the season he should be given til January - I'll extended that til the end of the season since he's barely been involved and just might yet prove he can cut it with us. For his sake, and ours, I hope so.

3rd goal was a joy to watch with Brown the lynchpin and Naka's free kick was a piece of class - we'll miss those when he goes.

EHIY

Narrowboat Tim, I'll be first to put my hand up to say that I was definitely not a Caldwell fan. I would scream about how p*sh he was for 90 mins at Parkhead (I do it about Naylor now). However to say that people are jumpin on the Caldwell band wagon as you saw through the mince perfomances a long time ago is a bit of a joke. Was I wrong in criticising? No because he was consistently poor. I'll be first to congratulate the guy for his excellent turnaround, obviously the signing of Loovens and the prospect of an improved contract has put the wind in his sails :) Last night he won every ball in the air and played long, concise passes from the back, things that have improved dramatically this season and long may it continue...

Where did you get your fortune telling spectacles anyway? :0P

Heard a rumour that Hutton will go back to Ipox in January as Spurs have no intent in paying the remainer of the instals on the tx fee.

Anyone who seen his performance last night would probably think its the right thing for Spurs to do - they also have the boy Corluka who's a right good player.

I never knew that the Hutton tx was based on installed payments...and one thing sttruck me on this. Whilst the ReaRangers Fans and the media would have a field day at the return of Hutton, I owuld have expected his tx value (as its over a perfiod of time) to have been loaded into the P+L under the accrual system. If this money doesn't materialise, it would have a negative impact on an already shabby set of accts.

Why do you need to scream at any player for playing poorly? Anybody who pulls on the hoops deserves 100% backing from the fans at the match. Shouting at someone for misplacing a pass is hardly going to improve their play, if anything it will probably make them more hesitant to try something later on in the game.

Criticisms if needed (and I don't agree with criticising any player but that's just me) should be left for the pub or forums such as this.

Just my opinion.

Mort, who appreciates that you probably go to a lot more matches than me.

Just a quick comment on the "commentators" last night.

I think a few are being harsh on Dodds, time and again he disagreed with mitchells observations on the game. this isnt just confined to last night, he usually alsways has to correct him when The Celtic play.

He also stated that Celtics passing game was a joy to watch. last night a few times.

I actually think Dodds is quite a good pundit, he always comes across fair to me. Hes a hun and obv favours them, but I can handle that.

mitchell on the other hand, my opinions on him would prob get this blog in the papers.

I thought Celtic were fabulous last night to a man, especially the support. I mentioned after ICT that the brutality factor with regards referee protection will be a factor this year. I think that will be the all deciding factor this year. When Nakamura leaves it will be akin to when Henrik left. He needs immediately replaced losing his quality could be another telling factor. WGS consumate Celtic manager when it comes to the press.

Gordon Strachan I love you

I was feeling better about the prospect of the Manchester United game and it was good to see Donati slot in so well and Hinkel have another great performance. Oh how I do hope that these two have stepped up to the plate.

I then watched the Man U game. West Ham went the same way as WBA but only quicker game over in 20 minutes. I hope WGS has learned something from the Everton game

I agree re Dodds.

Mitchell has that po-faced Scottishness that you imagine belongs to the Sunday Post readership.

This is one of those 'you couldnae make it up' stories.

According to the front page story in the Sun this morning, Asda are to hold talks in 'Rangers daft' true-blue Larkhall.

Company bosses plan a multi-million pound outlet in the town.

But the town's purge on 'Celtic' green has hit everything from shops to traffic lights.

Worried Asda chiefs fear a backlash, and now plan a two day public consultation.

Last night SNP MSP Alex Neil said..."ASDA should not pander to prejudice."

ONLY IN SCOTLAND!

Didnt know we had tried to sign him. If I remember correctly he was a no bad wee player. Although never thought much of his hair cut.

I'm off to the supermarket just now fholks would you believe but Morrisons so i should be ok :)

The full ASDA story - looks like there will be no pandering to predjudice..

ASDA: We won't change green logo for Rangers fans
Oct 30 2008

SUPERMARKET giant Asda says it had no plans to change its famous green logo to please shoppers in a Rangers-mad town.

Politicians claimed supermarket bosses were "pandering to prejudice" over suggestions they could change their traditional green and white livery at a new store in Larkhall, Lanarkshire.

But today an Asda spokeswoman insisted they had no intention of ditching their usual logo - which is the same colour as Rangers' Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Local people have been invited to give company bosses their views on proposals for the new multi-million pound store.

The consultation in a week's time had been arranged to discuss issues such as jobs and location.

She said: "We have no plans to change our Asda branding and signage.

"We use this across Scotland and the UK, and feel it is popular and well recognised.

"We are holding a public exhibition in Larkhall to seek people's views on our proposals to develop a new supermarket there.

"As with all public consultations that we undertake, it is being held to seek the public's views on the substantive aspects of our proposals, such as the site, employment opportunities, and working with the local community."

She added: "I think people are going to be more interested in these things. We don't envisage there will be a problem with our branding."

The question of a colour change for Larkhall was raised after sandwich chain Subway opted for a black sign instead of its usual green one for its shop in the town.

The chemist Moss Pharmacy also reportedly changed its green logo to blue.

The new Asda store earmarked for the Broomhill Gate area is expected to create up to 350 jobs.

The spokeswoman said: "We are looking forward to the public exhibition and discussing our proposals with people in Larkhall."

The Semi-Final Draw of the 2008-2009 Co-operative Insurance Cup competition will take place within The Scottish Parliament, Holyrood, Edinburgh on Wednesday, 12th November, 2008 at 3.00 p.m.

The Draw will be made by Scotland's First Minister, the Rt. Hon. Alex Salmond MSP, and a representative of our sponsors, Co-operative Insurance. The Presiding Officer of The Scottish Parliament, Mr. Alex Fergusson, MSP, will also be present.

________________________________________________________________
Expect a re-draw if Fergusson is involved again.

I wouldn't trust those two to draw a picture ...

or draw breath/curtains/etc.

Kittochbhoy ,

I assume you're referring to the myp2p link ?

If so , it covers most sports and I've found it varies from Very good to "I'm only putting up with it because I want to watch the Bhoys and have no other choice" .

Great link and that was the article I was thinking of. It would be great if Paul67 or someone could post that article on the 11th at 11.00am.

EVERY SPL team will wear special Remembrance Day jerseys next week.

The tribute will take place after poppy appeal organisers wrote to the 12 clubs asking them to wear the one-off kit - and all agreed.

Some clubs will have a small red poppy woven in to team jerseys on the day. Others will make their own tribute with players sporting a stick-on poppy.

Referees, their assistants and fourth officials will also join in the tribute by wearing a poppy on their outfits.

The jerseys will be worn in SPL matches to be played over the weekend of November 8-9. Remembrance Sunday falls on November 9 this year.

A spokeswoman for Poppyscotland, who used to be known as the Earl Haig Fund Scotland, said: "All the SPL clubs are involved and all their players will wear the special Scottish poppy which will greatly increase public awareness of the poppy appeal."

Last year, Hearts wore a special strip when they played a Remembrance Day match against Aberdeen at Tynecastle.

The decision was taken to honour the players of the legendary Hearts squad of season 1914-15, who died in World War I.

The club's entire first team squad had enlisted with the 16th Royal Scots, a battalion known as McCrae's Own.

Seven died in service. The strip worn by the Hearts players in 2007 had the names of the dead - John Allan, James Boyd, Duncan Currie, Ernest Ellis, Thomas Gracie, James Speedie and Harry Wattie - embroidered into the sleeve. The jersey also had a poppy on the chest.

Remembrance Day commemorates the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians since World War I.

Poppyscotland support war veterans and their dependants in Scotland. Last year the appeal raised a record s1.76million.

EHIY,

you beat me to it !!!

A query for the statos.

As the club who have won the most league titles in the world, does this fact coupled with their lack of a replica European cup in the blue room, make Rankers the team with the worst record in Europe in terms of attempts and success? I appreciate that a number of their titles were won pre-European cup but I'm interested nevertheless.

If ASDA pander to the stone age racist bigots they'll never get another penny from me!!
I know a primary school teacher that teaches in Larkhall and she tells me that the kids refuse to use green pencils, she 100% assures me this is true, she has no agenda in fact she's a non catholic. How utterly sad and pathetic, the Best Wee Country in the world - don't make me laugh.

CHRISTIAN DAILLY is believed to have set a Rangers record yesterday when he was sent off after just 45 seconds.

Referee Ross Haswell ruled the defender was the last man when he pulled back Dundee United's Danny Swanson in the box in a reserve game at Murray Park. Swanson missed the penalty in the 1-1 draw.

There have been quicker red cards. Sheffield Wednesday keeper Kevin Pressman lasted 13 seconds against Wolves in August 2000 for handling outside the box.

Uruguay hardman Jose Batista was sent off in 40 seconds for a shocking tackle on Scotland's Gordon Strachan at the 1986 World Cup.

Fastest of all came when Lee Todd of non-league Cross Farm Park Celtic was standing beside the referee and was startled by the whistle.

He blurted out, "F*** me, that was loud" and was sent off for foul language after only two seconds.

Malceye, you are correct. the rangers have had more attempts, without success, at the BIG cup than any other team.

this green/blue stuff reminds me of work..

you can wear a blue shirt (fresh one daily obviously) for 1 or 2 weeks and not a word.
howeva you go into work with a green shirt on and the comments start to fly...only in this country.....

oh i am at work so i better do some... :¬)

Just a few points. I can honestly never remember a Celtic game around this time of year when a minute's silence was called for regarding Poppy Day.

Personally I would not wear a poppy. None of my family ever did even although I had relatives who fought in WW11. Like the issue of royalty, Poppy Day has different meanings to different people in the West of Scotland. In most other parts of the UK such considerations are alien. If poppies were worn exclusively in memory of those fallen during the two world wars then I believe their wearing would be much more widespread. Unfortunately they also commerorate British forces actions in the Six Counties, Iraq and other places and are tarnished for many as a result.

If it did come about that Celtic in future played a game on November 11 at which an acknowledement for the dead was required then I would prefer the modern fashion of a minute's applause. That would keep all strands of our support happy.

My point I was trying to make was that Caldwell for the last couple of years didn't play as bad as people made out he did, that it was trendy to slag him because he made a couple of high profile errors. Very much like Telfer, every tiny error he committed was over criticised, every player makes mistakes in a game. I disagree with you that Caldwell was playing badly and it was only this year he has been playing well.

Mob mentallity rules sometimes at Parkhead, when the crowd start to get on the back of certain players some fans are just led along and join in with the criticism likewise when the crowd start heaping praise on a player fans join the bandwagon and start saying what a great game he had when the player didn't and I used last night as an example. Too me Gary Caldwell has always played well and giving his best for Celtic and that the criticism he was receiving from a section of our support was not justified. I believe if he came from anywhere other than Scotland he would not received some of the abuse he was subjected too. I just glad that the support has finally awoke to the fact he can play football.

Hail Hail

I drove through Larkhall once.

A troop of huns crowded around my car when I stopped at a traffic light. They were hooting and gesticulating wildly, displaying their blue-and-white plumage and distinctive red bottoms. I admit to being quite taken with this sight, but my guide explained to me that they do not like eye contact, and that I should roll up my windows and not give them any food or attempt flash photography.

Apparently there is a problem with tourists coming to Larkhall and feeding the huns, which has caused an explosion in their population out of all proportion to that of their natural predator, the benefit fraud inspector.

Unfortunately, despite their comical appearance huns can be an annoyance to humans, with their tendencies to steal and commit enthusiastic displays of public onanism, often while flinging their own poop at passers-by.

"Fastest of all came when Lee Todd of non-league Cross Farm Park Celtic was standing beside the referee and was startled by the whistle.

A Celtic player sent off for very little. Wonder when that has ever happened before...

Does anyone else think that there is a time for a minute's silence and a time for a minute's applause?

And not just because one will drown out any dissenters?

A minute's applause is great for celebrating a life of a footballer that gave joy to millions. Is it appropriate to honour the lives of men and women, some barely out of childhood, who died fighting the likes of fascism on foreign soil. I think I'd argue not.

Tin hat on (no pun intended!)

Celtic defender Glenn Loovens has ruled himself out of next week's Champions League clash with Manchester United through injury.

The 24-year-old is struggling with a thigh problem and told BBC Sport he will miss Sunday's trip to Hearts and the Celtic Park clash three days later.

Dutchman Loovens played in United's 3-0 win over Celtic at Old Trafford.

Striker Georgios Samaras, who missed last week's Group E game, has a slim chance of being back for the return.

Netherlands striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink will again definitely miss out.

Darren O'Dea played at the heart of Celtic's defence on Wednesday after Loovens was ruled out of the 3-1 Co-operative Insurance Cup victory over Kilmarnock.

Loovens, who joined Celtic from Cardiff City in August, had himself replaced captain Stephen McManus, who came off injured at half-time during Saturday's 4-2 Scottish Premier League win over Hibernian.

The Dutchman went on to score Celtic's third goal in that match - his second in three games for the Glasgow side.

McManus, meanwhile, is back in training in the hope of returning to the side at Tynecastle on Saturday.

rodo you about?

EHIY

I agree, the minute's applause is a nice gesture, but inappropriate as an act of remembrance. I found it very odd when that lad Rhys Jones was shot in Liverpool and Everton had a minute's applause at their game. Applause is not the appropriate way to react to the murder of a 10 year old boy, neither is it an appropriate way to pay respects to people who died in war, many of whom didn't get a choice in the battles they fought.

o1bhoy

funny you should ask but here they are

Exiled Hoop In Yorkshire

Totally agree, you honour the fallen that died fighting fascism by a minute silence, to do otherwise is to pander to idiots that want to sullen the names of those that gave the ultimate sacrifice so that future generations could be free, if we went for the applause option it would be just like say - a type of food selling company changing the colour of their logo because a bigoted section of the country don't like it because it reminds them of the people they hate.

If you have a problem standing for a minute silence for those that gave their lives so others could be free then why don't you just remember and respect those Celtic players and supporters that were injured and died in the Great Wars. Who cares what the huns do with symbol of the poppy or rememberance day when do we start being dictated by them. Do it for our own.

Not good news on Loovens, the injuries are fairly stacking up.

What's their news on Naka, was it just a slight knock?

Any news on Naylor, is he injured?

Should read: What's the news on Naka?

Regards Billy Dodds. We all know he's a hun at heart but, that said, I do believe he tries very hard to put his personal preferences to one side when involved in PUBLIC punditry. He did say last night - I'm sitting back here watching a Celtic masterclass. -

His sidekick, wee preaching Paul Mitchell, is less able to be professional though. Remember the Hearts man's lament when King Artur saved one of the penalties in the shoot out against Sparta Moscow last year ? 'I could have saved that !' he screamed in disgust.

On another topic discussed on the thread today - Asdagate. Heard one or two of the Larkhall locals interviewed on the radio. They were steadfast in their views. Aye, ready ! They wanted the colour of the Asda logo changed from green to blue. Why shouldn't it be, they argued. The colour of the chemist shop had been changed as had the traffic lights. It was a Rangers town after all.

Murray and Bain must be getting to the stage where they just don't want to wake up in the mornings. If it's not one thing it's another. What a year they've had. The mayhem in Manchester to the continued singing of the racist Famine song. And after all their efforts of recent years to sweep under the carpet the true nature of their club and their bigoted support.

At this rate Rangers fans will find the arrest sheet extended to include a charge of collective exposure. ( and that's they only thing they'll have extended this season. )

Fine Girl Y'ar.

Ah but if thats the case then what is wrong with singing songs to remember those who gave their lives for freedom on the streets of Dublin on Easter Weekend 1916??

You also say remember our own, didn't representitives of celtics own playing staff return to Ireland to take part in the rising? And subsequent civil struggle? The answer is of course yes.

Also didn't Eamonn De Valera present us with the tri-colour in the 50 when no other could be sourced?

You must confuse me with someone else, have you ever seen a post of mine saying that we shouldn't sing those songs? I don't sing them much nowadays but I did when I was younger and I wrote here that it is part and parcel of being a Celtic supporter so I agree with you "let the people sing". The only songs I don't care for is the ones like the Nacho Nutter song, why waste your breath over an insignificant toerag like him we just building him up and giving him extra gravitas with the huns.

Regarding the quality and impartiality of commentators. I wasn't wanting to admit this, but somehow i managed not to notice the game was being video streamed, until half-time (d'oh!) so i listened to the first half on the radio (via my computer!! as we don't get radio Scotland down here in sunny Lancashire). I didn't quite work out how was commentating, but they seemed to enjoy a little too much the brusing tackles being handed out to Naka & Co. They were laughing about the tackle that Naka endured before he was booked.

donegaldanny

This site http://www.hellfire-corner.demon.co.uk/celtic.htm names the six Celtic players who died in the 1st world War. Excuse my ignorance but who were the Celtic players that returned to take part in the rising?

November 11th (or nearest Sunday) is a British day of remembrance for their war dead. Not being able to be quiet for a minute to allow others to pay their respects could be seen as the kind of intolerance we're slagging our southside chums off for.

Narrowboat

Sorry chief, wasn't you in particular but just trying to highlight how all this 'don't sing those songs' is just pandering to them, and to highlight that the reason we sing the songs is the exact same reason there will be a minutes silence.

The Asda/larkhall story sums it up for me, why should we dilute our heritage and history and songs of hope and joy just because they are horrible??

It was a generic point mate not aimed at your good self but thought your post was the perfect way of illustrating the hypocrisy of it all.

DD

I hate all this - 'It's a Rangers town' tripe. It's a sectarian stinkhole. Calling it a 'rangers town' gives the impression that it's a quaint little football mad stronghold when in fact it's populated by bigots, racists, and neanderthals.

Let me add - I know not everyone that lives there fits that bill, but the majority who dwell there do.

monthetic

I'll have a look at my copies of celticminded and celticminded 2 as well as dvd celtic the irish connection and get back to you, don't have them to hand. I take it you are suggesting there were none?

DD

I was showing the hypocrisy that we condemn Subway and the Chemist pandering to the bigots of Larkhall but if we change the minute of silence to a minute of applause are we not guilty of the same thing. For the record I posted against Dr Reid coming out with that statement on what songs to sings it just played into the hands of the huns and the Laptop Loyal.

narrowboat

I agree personally I would only be supportive of certain aspects of what the silence is for but at the same time would not lower myself or give any ammo to the press by disrupting it. So I agree with what you're saying.

Always sticks in my mind when going to a home game at Celtic Park with my son of 12 years old, quite few years ago now and we were both wearing poppies as remembrance Sunday was the following day, there were sections of our support looked at us as if we were aliens.
I've no gripe whatsoever with opposing views on the origin of the poppy but would hope by now those more dissenting among us have mellowed, considering a lot of the present day disabled
ex-servicemen actually didn't join for Queen and Country but to get themselves a job first and foremost and and maybe a career. I will never be convinced they/we ever thought for a minute they/we would be putting their lives on the line on such a regular basis. I'm proud to say I was one of those who took the only way out of no job, possible drink, drugs & jail and would encourage those youngsters who might have the inclination, to do the same. Sometimes it's the only way out believe me.

Wonderful display of real football last night and is it any wonder Scotland is seen as a backwater when opposing teams try to kick the ball players off the park with no protection from the referees whatsoever. At least two Kill-ie players should have been sent off and that's being kind. The CELTIC chorus are to be congratulated for not giving any hacks ammunition for their rags! Nice to see wee Gordon getting some credit at least from some of you.

Isn't Larkhall the place Rod Taylor travelled to in "The Time Machine"?

donegaldanny

To me rememberance day is about the Great Wars, if the huns want to hijack it for their own dirty cause then that is their business, I don't care about them but that shouldn't let us stop us respecting those from the Celtic family and others that sacrificed their lives to stop fascism. One thing I don't like and it also came up in the song debate is that we only should do something because if we don't we get crucified by the Laptop Loyal. We should honour a minute of silence for those that died in the Great Wars because it is the "Right thing to do" not because we would get "better press" or in our case "not get a slagging press" likewise in my opinion to stop the singing of the "Novo Song" is the right thing to do but to stop singing republican songs to cater to the press is wrong.

Watched the game on Sky+ last night and was delighted with the performance. Gordon who needs no surname has been telling us of his vision since he arrived. At least on a week to week SPL basis that is now approaching.
We do need to strengthen the well known positions, but it is nearing. Someone noted earlier, possibly on the last post, imagine if we had a LB? With a LB a ball playing CB beside GC and Hinkel/Caddis at RB we should take the SPL at a stroooooooll.
The competition in midfield justifies to an extent the numbers we now have. I was pleased to see Mo get a run out, he was tidy at times rusty at others, another of the if only Bhoys probably.
Looking forward to more of the same against wee Kaunas, who's the ref btw, going by last night he could be the most important man on the park.

philvis

Sorry, but you're wrong. You will remember at the end of the film Rod actually wanted to go back to the place he'd just come from.
The suggestion that anyone would want to go back to Larkhall is pure science fiction.

Irrespective of one's political views, its only human decency that a minute's silence for the war dead is kept impeccably. To me its a personal thing, if you want to remember the innocent victims of war in Iraq ect ect then use that minute for that purpose.......

true story..
was asked to go to larkie at short notice to cover a sickie.

walked from one end to the other at lunchtime for a pint, the pub was managed by a blantyre guy who used to play for them..
i walked in and he shouted over the bar ah right *****, u still supporting the cellic?

You'll be delighted to know I'm sure that I agree with you 100%, and I think we have in common that your finest moment as a Celtic supporter was the same as mine namely being part of a mass belting out of YNWA after the final final whistle in Seville, it was magic.

I also recall that we briefly stopped singing when Mouhrinho sent over his players to applaud the Celtic support and we all stopped singing and started booing, great night out in spite of the result.

Seems weird having that as a favourite moment, but any idiot can celebrate a victory, but not everyone can show such pride after a defeat. That's what makes Celtic great.

The dongle I mentioned is a usb digital TV receiver which can be purchased from Asda (Green letters above the shopfront) etc bit I got my one from Bid TV. As long as you have a relatively modern P you dont need any additional card. This gets you all the digital stations you would get on freeview or a digital tv and my dongle (why do I feel like a dongle every time I type that word !!!! As i said in the last thread - congrats to you and your team (lucky they scraped by my Brewers in the play offs BTW). You can spit on that curse now.

One thing though _ although Im a big NFL and MLB fan I dont agree with the World Champion tag. To me thats like I make up a new game and I win the tournies that I hold in my own back garden and that makes me the world champ.

As posted on the last thread, the referee on Sunday is the same man who let Killie away with everything last night.

The esteemed David Potter in his match report on Keep the Faith "felt that Craig Thomson did not get too many decisions wrong". We all see things differently. From Row A of Rugby Park I thought the free kick leading to Killie's goal was blatant. On seeing it later on the telly, I realise Craig Thomson and I were both wrong.

Watched most of last nights game on Setanta before surrendering to the demands of the wife to switch channels for one of her favourite programmes. Paul I agree with your summary, I enjoyed Celts high tempo game and great to see Skippy in such great form again. Donati looked very comfortable and surprised me with his performance but not with his undoubted skills. Gary Caldwell looking rock-solid and great to see Darren back.

At the time standing there belting it out with scarves held aloft it almost felt as if we'd won, weird its certainly was. I've no problem watching re-runs of the game and I've got a signed photo by Henrik of him scoring the 2cnd equalizer, framed and hung proudly in the hall for all to see. Like everybody else on here I've always been a win lose or draw supporter, its the only way.

First time in a long time Celtic and especially Aiden had me moving to the edge of my seat during their play - and this, as I'm glad more than a few have noted, amongst a very 'physical' Killie side. Our players looked as if they knew they were the best team on the park and played accordingly. It's a sad/bad day when Naka gets sick of getting booted about - I was counting along with him. Fair dues to Billy Dodds as well - he knew who the best team were. Jim Jeffries - never a free foul for the free kick goal????????

Here's a great link to a great bit of Celtic History.

http://www.sover.net/~spectrum/celtictour.html

To say Celtic was never political is just rubbish...from the link posted above:

In his 2002 book Willie Maley: The Man Who Made Celtic, David Potter attributes the success of the tour to the number of Scottish and Irish exiles in the country. “There were, for example, survivors of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin who would never be able to come back to Ireland or any other part of the United Kingdom.” he notes. “There were those who were proscribed from Glasgow society because of their part in the ‘Red Clydeside’ disturbances of the latter years of the war and immediately afterwards. To them, the visit of Celtic meant absolutely everything.”

I thought the commentary was , mainly, pretty good....certainly much fairer than I have ever heard from that idiot, Booth. Plenty of praise for the flowing football and the appreciation shown to Gary C was similar to some of the gushing stuff poured in Ugly Betty`s direction. (How is he doing down there? Is he still the greatest defender in the world?)
If this Asda/Larkhall story is true, I hope the Media treat it for the narrow-minded stupidity that it is and don`t just do it as the humorous News add on which, admittedly, usually involves animals.

Hartley's mantra seems to have been adapted of recent with crosas sitting in the holding role or as last night the donut.
Seems to allow him to break free and give not only extra options for our midfield and wingers final ball but also allows the forwards more space as he takes a player or two with him.

Was delighted for the mamager last night after his tough evening down in england.

Enough football there from me for another 6 mnths renewal fee ?

On the subject of Larkhall, all my Da's relations on his Mum's side live in Larkhall. In fact the same Da lived just outside Larkhall, in a place called Draffin, when he was wee.

You may not believe this but the same place has a chapel and not one but two CSCs.

Granted their lives have been hell especially at weekends and if the Huns happen to win. My Da's cousin doesn't ever use the word Rangers, just says the other team or they. In all my life I have never heard him use the word Rangers.

I met the Larkhall CSC in Seville and I have been on their bus. They are a nice lot.

Many of the Celtic supporters are my Da's extended family, there are a lot of them.

As a fan of TGITW it would be a major downer if it was suspended for now.

I think a minute's applause is great in certain circumstances: when it is to commemorate the life of someone who has lived and achieved. But a minute's silence is far more appropriate to remember those who died in wars, whether fighting fascism or conscripted to support imperialist ambition.

I know that the 11/11 rememberance was initially to remember WW1 dead, but I think it has expanded now. We should be remembering the dead of all sides in all wars.

Larkhall Asda

You can just see it now - a picket line outside Asda with the ugliest flying pickets ever being bussed out from other areas to strengthen the ranks.

meanwhile the bhoys heading out to counteract TFOD masses and shop at Asda. Driving through the picket lines only to be bombed with Morrisons eggs to the chants of "Why dont you go home"

fergus slayed the blues - Agree 100% on what you mentioned re Brown.

Just before half time brown was getting clean about the idiots who where doing Naka.

The second half he moved out right amd kept it up.

Loved it when he screwed his shot wide and just turned round to the killie hun that had been kicking naka and trying to kick Brown and just laughed at him.

In my opinion, the bhoy is class.

Broonies goannae get ye !

I remember in the late 70s the park gates in Larkhall were painted green, as almost all park gates tend to be. After a public campaign they were restored to their "traditional" red, white and blue. What a place.

Larkhall's one redeeming feature is that the Maestro haled from there.

Good to see that Massimo was showing his ability. Even better to see that people are beginning to realise that GC is a class act. would love to see him made captain. Oh, and Andy Hinkel is showing his class too. Great stuff.

Some years ago Da went to a Trade Union Congress in Brighton. His digs were really good, better than he expected. He went out that evening to get something to eat and met two Scottish fellas. They were complaining about their digs so Da suggested that they call at his place as there were a couple of vacancies, they saidthey would go round later.

They kept talking and Da told them about his Scottish relations and where they lived. They quickly ate up and left and never came to look at the digs. They thought my Da was a hun!!

Since then we always tell people his relationa are from Hamilton!!

I still don't know how my granny's side ended up in Larkhall, I suppose it was the mine.

I strongly believe that we should respect any minute's silence on Remembrance Sunday. We have contributed significantly to the Armed Forces over the years. We have suffered for it too. I think Celtic supported those players who wanted to sign up during the 2 World Wars, while Rangers arranged for their players to get work which allowed them exemption. They also were able to field their regular team during the 2nd World War, while Celtic did too, although severely depleted. They could have included the likes of Matt Busby who would have loved to pull on the Hoops but we wouldn't let him.

Those who have died in war, whoever they are where ever they died ought to be remembered with respect.

Larkhall actually has a sizeable catholic community and I believe has a chapel. Larkhall Thistle the junior team also always had a more progressive signing policy than TFOD.

Now Stonehouse just down the road is another matter. It's artciles forbid a chapel within its boundaries. It is also a village with no steps into the houses and they are all bungalows. They didnae want their knuckles being scraped all the time.

There are also no pigeons in Stonehouse as the pteradactyls scared them all away.

If I was to advise ASDA it would be to keep with their brand image. If they don't like it then don't open (no jobs)and make the fine people of Larkhall go to Hamilton for their shopping in ASDA as they do now.

I have posted on here that I dont buy a poppy for my own reasons

However I would never disrespect the dead by not keeping one minutes silence.

God forgives all souls when they pass through this world as christains we should remember that.

Unfortunately given the current songs debate I can see a few people breaking the silence and giving the press and TFOD exactly what they want.

We all know TFOD are a bigotted club with a fair amount of decent guys ( I know some and sure you do too)

We have a good support with a few idiots who let us down at times (I dont mean singing "songs" more the Novo type chants etc) but if anyone breaks the silence especially with a song from Irish origins it will be seized upon and the old two sides of the same coin will be rolled out again

As a Ruggy bhoy who stayed in Stonehouse for 5 years and is now in Blackwood/Kirkmuirhill ( slightly better it must be said but not difficult really), I consider myself very much a spy in enemy territory out here and know it can't last forever - my cover is sure to be blown...

Manys the morning i spent in Stonehouse, my hangover disturbed by them beating their bits of bone on their tom tom drums...

Funniest time was after a night out when i dropped my season ticket in Stonehouse - surprisingly it got handed in with no burn marks but i had to collect it from the police station in Larhall... My comment of 'bet you dont get many Murphys around here collecting these do you ?' didnt even raise a smile from the good man !! I promptly left before further action was taken...

Hope ASDA don't compromise - what a stange country we inhabit !!

I have deliberately stopped posting on this blog for the last while as I just saw it as pointless. I will be posting this today and after that can see myself finishing up with CQN. No great loss to anyone here nor for myself but I really got to get this off my chest.

I can understand why the Scottish Celtic support may wish to commemorate their war dead but do not forget that there is also a sizable Irish support in CP every week. Take a look at the empty stands last week when the ferrys were all canceled for evidence. Obviously, not every empty seat would have been taken up by the Irish but a large majority would have been. Everyone in my club noticed it.

My point here is, it is all well and good supporting Poppy Day but remember that the same British Troops were responsible for some of the most appalling atrocities in Ireland...the Black and Tans in Croke Park, the burning of Cork City and more recently Bloody Sunday and the shoot-to-kill policy in the 6 Counties. I, personally, would refuse point blank to stay quiet for the minutes silence. To me John Reids quizzling hands are all over this pandering to the British establishment. The whole crap about keeping politics out of Celtic Park has just been shown for what it is....crap!!! Are Celtic trying to get rid of us from the support? It certainly looks very like.
TFS is about telling us to go home, we were told by Celtic we must stop singing and now to just shut up....enough!!
Celtic (and who consulted the supporters on this???) have decided that our players (including Paddy McCourt from Derry, Darren O'Dea and Cillian Sheridan) must wear the bloody poppy too? This is a disgrace and an absolute kick in the whatsits for the Irish. Thanks again for taking our money and abandoning us, Celtic.
Keep politics out of CP, aye right!!! I say keep your poppy day ceremony out of Celtic Park and leave them at the cenotaph.
Personally, I hope the Irish bhoys sing out Amhrann na Bhiann loud and proud.

I promise you, that post was not lobbed at you. The first paragraph was directed to you. I have said that I have never sung the rebel songs at Celtic Park but I would now consider it open day with this rubbish by Celtic FC.
I promise you that the Irish Celtic support are absolutely furious over this piece of political pandering and feel more let down by the club on this issue than the bloody TFS. No one bothered to consult anyone about this decision. The only conclusion is that it is to rid Celtic of the Irish support and it is a view I could not disagree with.
The lies that we were fed about the political songs issue a couple of weeks ago have been blown wide open for all to see. Can the Scottish support not see that??? They have been made fools of including all those well-intentioned posters who agreed with the decision on the basis of it being good for the club to dump the songs we have always sung.
This is a very dangerous game that Celtic FC are playing with their support. Why has this decision been made now for the first time in the clubs history to celebrate Poppy Day? Coincidence it most definitely is not.

Larkhall actually has a sizeable catholic community and I believe has a chapel
------------------

Without wishing to be pedantic - i will leave that to my esteemed colleague Timmy7 - the only place you will find a chapel is a print room.

This has been one of my particular bugbears for many years. If you are referring to a Catholic church, please say so.

IMO the term 'chapel' used in this context is a construct devised by non-Catholics differentiating between the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church, and the post-Reformation version which they refer to as 'church'

Proddies do not own the term 'church'. Using the term 'chapel' panders to their blinkered view of their own supposed subjugation of the Catholic Church.

I think Hinkel has been solid since he has came back in. Hopefully it will continue. Looked assured!! Hopefully Gordon will give me a ran and not chop and change in the next few games. I reckon Sunday might be the time we see the Hutch unleashed. Hat trick again. He's a bruiser with a pace, just what you need against the Hearts on Sunday. I wouls stick him up fromt with McDonald. MC Donald looked lean and mean last night, looked a player who had got his hunger back.

Squire - it is not often if at all I respond to posters with word issues - but I would love you to brief me on the entymology of Chapel and your notion that it is not properly applied when someone speaks of a Chapel. let alone I should air my own thoughts on upper and middle class Catholics who often use Church as obfuscation to save any pre-concieved notions being rattled.

u

vman

To say nothing about Hinkel (German) and Donati (Italian)....are they going to be forced to wear the poppy too? I'm sure Neil Lennon will be delighted too!!

This action is a monumental screw up by the Celtic board, one that I really hope they hold their hands up to and say they made a mistake. I won't hold my breath though. Since when do politicians do that???

Hail Hail

I'm astonished at the poppy issue.
The wearing of a poppy is a political statement. WHy should O'Dea, McGeady, Hinkel? Donati? Nakamura? have to wear a poppy to remember British war dead. Can you imagine the outcry if a Scottish (or worse Israeli) player in Germany was forced to remember German war dead?

The Haig fund (as it was for years) commemorated a butcher who sent thousands of working class guys to their death in the name of British imperialism.

Whilst I have nothing but admiration for those anti-fascist/anti-nazi fighters in WWII, the Poppy fund now encompasses all conflicts including Ireland (remember the Paras etc, Falklands (thatcher's re-election war) Iraq both times, Afghanistan etc etc.

I have absolutely nothing but sympathy for any family's loss in these circumstances but I refuse to feel a pariah because I will not actively support the British War machine.

I cannot for the life of me see how the club can make players do likewise.

I've finished that chapel I was painting. The Pope is quite satisfied.

—Michelangelo

Wherever God erects a house of prayer, The Devil always builds a chapel there; And 'twill be found, upon examination, The latter hast the largest congregation.

—Defoe, Daniel

I went to the Garden of Love, And saw what I never had seen: A chapel was built in the midst Where I used to play on the green.

—Blake,William

celtic park is not the place for any political statement for or against the wearing of poppies, if the players are having them as part of that days kit then it is a disgrace, it should be a personal choice by them, as it is for the rest of us,

if you wish to hold a minutes silence go to a war memorial, if you wish to protest against do it elsewhere.

Many wil be remembering relatives from the world wars .we have a sizable Irish following but we are not exclusively Irish .If you wish not to acknowledge the silence then may I suggest you remain outside the stand and take your seat when it is over .Please respect other supporters .I for one do not think for a minute our club are trying to get rid of our Irish supporters ,as they have said on many an occasion we are proud of the clubs heritage they fly the tricolour over CP and stood against calls for it's removal many years ago .

A chapel is a small place of worship within a larger building.
It is NOT a Catholic Church.

This term was applied to Catholic Churches by non-Catholics attempting to portray Catholic worship as something alien or sinister.

For many years I would get a clip round the ear from my dear departed mother if I was caught using this term.

I refer to Church because I am part of the "one, holy, catholic and apostolic church".

The very fact you highlight "upper and middle class Catholics who often use Church as obfuscation to save any pre-concieved notions being rattled" underlines my point exactly, namely that the post-Reformers have so browbeaten working class Catholics into using the term 'chapel' that it is now the accepted term, and that anyone varying from this is trying to be a "diet-Catholic"

Put simply. They left us. We retain the rights to the name. Where else in the world do you go to Mass in a Chapel?

The Earl Haig fund, as well as looking after old WW1 and WW2 veterans also looks after British soldiers who have pentioned out the army after murdering Irish men and women in cold blood rather than facing life in prison.

I understand where you are coming from.
You have raised some points that I would agree with.
However there has been a campaign in recent years in the UK to get more focus on Remembrance Day-I don’t see it as being anything underhand with Celtic or JR.

For the club to say no- would just attract more attention I expect.

That may well be so but Celtic have hit the support with the non-political singing policy BS and are now forcing a political policy on us. Not good enough.
Celtic is a very peculiar football club in that its roots are intertwined with the Irish and Ireland. This MUST be taken into account on any political decision like this. They haven't and I suspect it was deliberate.

Nope, sorry I can not go with that one either. So we bow to the press now? They set our clubs agenda? To hell with they press, they do not and have never done anything but put our club down. Good God, has the Celtic support really been that beaten down by that mob that they are afraid to stand up for anything?

The bigots will always be bigots whether we support this ridiculous minutes silence or not. Are club has fought them long enough...another battle is not beyond us.

As I said keep politics out of Celtic Park and let people pay their respects at the appropriate places and times.

Well as you are not actually living in your country I wondered why troops "occupying" it was such a cause of resentment for you. When you say your country you obviously mean all of Ireland since any British troops that are stationed there must be in the North.

However since those living in the North have come to an accommodation that allows such an "occupation" in order that each side can live peacefully with each other I wonder why you cannot come to the same accommodation.Particularly as you are removed from the benefits of having one and the disbenefits of not having one.

Perhaps one day when resentments on both sides have been identified as the self induced poison that they are, there will be no need for any "occupation" as you see it, but as long as you see the world through that lens of resentment you will be resentful.

May you find peace in your heart through the kind of forgiveness that Christ lived.

Whitedoghunch, Fergus…,:¬)

I just thought, awe this debate and a cannae see anything official about a minutes silence!

Dublin Bhoy and Michael Collins - I agree with your point of view. I too am shocked and disappointed that the club have taken this decision.

However, I think disrupting any silence would be devisive and exactly what the entire press pack, Rangers, and the SFA want us to do to enable them to counterbalance the absolute disgrace that is TFS. Until they find this perceived ying, to go with the yang, everyone knows they do not have the courage to stand up to TFS singing, and that includes the government, justice system, and police.

I would seperate yours and my own complete disdain for the decision of the club to wear the poppy and as some advocate, leave your seat empty until proceedings are completed, therefore showing your disapproval of what the day or symbol stands for. However, this does not mean ignore the decision of the club, instead puruse that avenue for your anger, contact them, after all, they took the decision!

To those who see no issue with this, and leaving my own personal agenda out of it, clearly down to heritage. You cannot, and should not, impose a political symbol upon anyone, regardless of their nationality. O'Dea should no more be asked to don a poppy than Nakamura. Football players come from far and wide these days and each will hold a unique set of beliefs. As individuals they should not be asked to disregard those for anyone.

If some footballers or fans believe that wearing a poppy is in good taste, then fine, that is their own perogative, i thought we supported a club open to all, but it is an individual decision. Celtic have effectively spoken for each of the players and the whole fanbase in a very ill-informed and foolish fashion, in my humble opinion.

I wonder if the club tells the players how they should vote too... perhaps we are next...

P.S. How would anyone of the guys who support wearing a poppy feel if the club had came out and point blank refused and stated that none of the players would wear them either? In that case what about those players who would like to wear one?

Michael Collins

Are you saying that in all the years of the recent troubles no British soldier ever offered an act of kindness to a Catholic in NI or that no Catholics in NI were grateful on some occasions that they were there?

Was their presence not a necessary evil or the lesser of a greater evil?. Had my son been in the army and sent over to stop the bloodshed on both sides I would have told him to go awol and let the two ungrateful hateful sides sort it out for themselves.

Of all the British soldier that were wounded or died doing their duty in NI surely some were doing honourable duty?

If none exist fair enough, but if they do the stance being suggested dishonours their memory.

Auldheid - "However since those living in the North have come to an accommodation that allows such an "occupation" in order that each side can live peacefully with each other I wonder why you cannot come to the same accommodation."

Perhaps you would be so kind as to talk me through this wonderful "accomodation that allows an 'occupation'"? I am intrigued!

Auldheid

That has got to be the most patronising rubbish I have heard on this board. I am not even going to grace it with a reply though it would be too easy to.

Also, thanks for the religious intercession.

Hail Hail

I must admit that I find the whole poppy debate on here today unpalatable to say the least.

I understand the strong views aired on here by DublinBhoy and others, but........ and please correct me if I'm wrong. Isnt the whole premise of the poppy selling a charitable one? Are the funds not used to support fellow human beings who have been injured carrying out their jobs? Whether you believe in the wars that have been fought in the name of the UK or not surely we can all still feel compassion for a fellow human being who is in a less fortunate position than ourselves?

And on this same note if it is charitable then surely Celtic FC have to give it their upmost support? And if it's charitable surely its not political?

I'll bet there is at least a handful of either ex-military or current military people who read and post on this blog. And there will no doubt be parents and family of military personnel too. With our huge worldwide support there is bound to be countless people out there who have lost loved ones in recent conflicts but still love Celtic and all it stands for. I am equally sure that there are people reading this who have lost friends and family in Ireland during the troubles who still hate the British soldier and all he stands for. However I would challenge them to walk past a bleeding soldier of any nationality, race or creed and not want to help them!

Maybe I'm just a softy, and maybe if I had personal experience of losing someone via a British soldier's gun I would think differently. But I really hope I wouldn't!

Hail Hail

Ye blind guides which strain at a gnat having swallowed a camel.

The British army are at the moment engaged in an illegal war in Iraq per Kofi Annan.

We know the number of British troops who have lost their lives but it is policy not to count the Iraqi lives lost.

However we have been told that a million children lost their lives in the sanctions which led up to the war.Celtic in the person of Dr John Reid is connected to this barbarity.

Piston Broke - Support fellow human beings, charitable, White Poppy sir? And I for one would never walk past another bleeding human being in need no matter who he may be, British soldier or not.

Antrim Boy

I think Celtic were simply being political and looking after the interests of Celtic for the very reasons you state.

Doing what allows Celtic to prosper in the hostile ground in which they have been planted IS THEIR JOB. Not to twist and turn to meet the grievances, perceived or otherwise of a support with mixed views on each and every matter.

The players wear what they are told to because they are paid to follow the policies of the organisation that pays them,so tat Celtic will prosper. If they do not like that they can find employment elsewhere.

I despair at times of the rantings of the RST but holding on to a narrow minded past world view appears not to be the sole province of the hun.

antrim bhoy
has the club stated that ALL the players have to wear a poppy .I would find that hard to believe ,surely they would only have to out of choice .

The British forces in the 6 counties were propping up a sectarian state that allowed Nationalists to be burned out their homes with no fear of any form of retribution.

You are correct to say that the individual soldier does not bear the full repsonsibility for this occupation and I'm sure there wer/are some Brtish soldiers who have shown kindness to Nationalists. Gerry Adams has stated many times that the Republican cause has no quarrel with working class squaddies, very similar to the working class people of the 6 counties, but with the establishment that puts them in a position to perpetuate oppression.

This does not excuse the fact that many British soldiers abused their positions and committed heinous acts of cowardly murder which were subsequently absolved by the army and the British government. There are many incidents too numerous to mention where ex-Soldiers are enjoying life courtesy of a full British army pension while there erstwhile victims are lying cold in the ground.

We should not ever, ever show any respect to these people and should stand up to anyone who tries to force us to.

Dublin Bhoy

That was not was not a religious intercession. It was practical advice. Learn what forgiveness means and one day you will be grateful.

I don't think it's our place to get angry on behalf of our players being asked to wear a poppy, especially since we don't know if any of our players actually has a problem with it. If they do have a problem then I'm sure they wouldn't be forced to wear one.

As for the minute silence, all I can suggest is that if you have a problem staying quiet for the memory of those that have died in vain for some other fool's cause then it's best to wait until it's over before entering the stadium. It wouldn't be any different from the normal first and last five minutes at Celtic park anyway. By having a minute silence in memory of those who have died in wars does not in anyway act as a support for the unjusts moments in history.

PistonBroke

As Antrim_Bhoy has said...I would never walk past any injured person, unless maybe that injured person had just tried to kill my family.

So where exactly do we stop doing what is politically expedient for the club...good God man you sound like a Krupts and Volkswagon making excuses for supporting Hilter!!

Hail Hail

Antrim Boy

So there are two elements in this? The individuals and the politics. Its a choice then.....

Two Wolves

An old Cherokee chief is teaching his grandson about life:

"A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

"One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.

"The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope,
serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

"This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old chief simply replied, "The one you feed."

has anyone from the club actually come out and said they will have poppys on the strip and that the club will hold a minutes silence?

Antrim_Bhoy

Again maybe I am wrong about the whole red poppy thing but is it not charitable?????? And was it not chosen to symbolise the fields of Northern France which grew thousands of red poppies having been fertilised by the bodies of soldiers from both sides? It was supposed to be a mark of respect for those who gave their lives, nothing more. And yet the white poppy, whilst I believe the sentiments behind it to a great extent, is actually designed as a political protest against war in all its forms!

Hail Hail

Fergus

Since you neamesake Fergus McCann arrived at the club Celtic have treated their Irish support like a drunk uncle at a family wedding.

Tolerated but not encouraged. As a club we seem to be doing everything we can to atagonise them even though they make up an eigth of our home support.

The revenue they contribute to the club is a very sigificant amount of money but the club seem not to care.

Auldheid

You flippantly throw in a reference to RST in probably the most patronising post I have ever has the displeasure of reading. I expressed my opinion, to which I am entitled and in no way asked others to take that on board. I embrace other peoples views and those who disagree with me, which I thought were the pillars of this blog. For you to throw in a veiled name-calling due to someone expressing an alternative opinion and questioning the accruacy of what you stated was part of an 'agreement' in the North of Ireland to allow an 'occupation' is a disgrace and you should be ashamed of yourself. You took great pleasure in ridiculing Dublin Bhoy's view because he no longer lived in Ireland but cannot accept an alternative view to your own. Sorry sir but I believe it is you who are the narrow minded one in this debate.

Excluding your petty name-calling references and to address the remainder of your post with courtesy as I would have done so without the former. Celtic is a club of mixed views THAT IS MY POINT. I am happy to sit alongside a fellow Celtic fan who wears a poppy and supports the troops, because that is his perogative and that is what makes the club great. Perhaps we would even have a bit of banter over it.

Secondly you state that players are employed by the club and therefore must follow the political beliefs or otherwise of those in control, I find this surprising. If you were to take up employment with a company and were sacked, disciplined or otherwise for not wearing a poppy your emplyer would find themselves in court faster than you could say 'employment tribunal'. The players are in employment of the club, correct, and they have the same rights to freedom of expression as any of us. If you were given a job in a company where atheism is the favoured belief would you happily leave your religion aside to follow the party line?

Yours regettably with a little anger but hopefully without an insulting reference associating you with our rivals because you disagreed with me.

Well bhoys,

My final post on this blog. Good luck and support the players of our fine club...but as for our clubs leaders, be wary of wolves in sheeps clothes.

For the last time....

Hail Hail my friends

There are many reason why Celtic made the decision they made. Protect the club, honour the honourable dead, raise money for charity (our founding cause).

What you choose to believe is entirely up to you. I am sure you have good experiential reasons for your stance.

I am just pointing out that there are alternative ways of looking at things that are as valid as the ones that upset you so much that I do wonder why.

No doubt if I had a similar experience to yourself I might think the same. However I, like most human beings, have been wronged in my life. I just found forgiveness the best way to free me from the effects of those wrongs.

PistonBroke - I honestly cannot say with any certainty where funds generated from poppy sales go, I presume for the care of veterans who have fought for Britain in wars through the ages. So yes I have no doubt it is charitable. However, as for it being political it is a symbol which does not just commemorate the 1st world war but all conflicts in which Britain has taken part, and that is my own personal issue with it.

The white poppy to my knowledge stands for peace/anti-war, and in rememberance of all those who have died in conflicts around the world. So yes i guess it is political but it is more my kind of politics? And to my knowledge also remembers those young men, rightly or wrongly sent to their death by Britain.

I have tried to answer as best I can there...

Re- the sad poppy debate

If you object to a country remembering those that died defending it why not stay away from it and don't enter Britain!

Antrim Boy

That was not flippantly thrown in. It was deliberate to make you think if you were being narrow minded in your stance. Did it make you think or was your reply a reaction to an unjustified charge?

My post was not meant to be patronising, that is a meaning that you gave it. That is your choice and I have no problem with that.

You see what Celtic are doing as imposing a political symbol. Why? I see it as it doing what is right for Celtic not only tactically but with some morale justification.

Is that possible, is it no more than that or has it to be as you see it? That is where narrow mindedness can comes in. Not so much narrow more joyless.

mort.....
I see you had to go back nearly 3 years to find a goal from a maloney free-kick.

michael collins
What reason do you think they have to alienate the irish support when the only problem they seem to have is with a section of the away support singing some add ons to some songs .not a very good reason to jeopardize such revenue to a board who we are forever being told are only interested in the bottom line .
hail hail

Dublin Boy

I guarantee that you would like me and would warm to the advice.

I read somewhere that the SPL have asked all clubs to wear poppies, though googling only shows this as being a story in the Record, and the SPL website doesn't make mention in its recent news stories.

I don't think there's a minute's silence. This was brought up because we're playing Hearts this weekend (http://www.heartsgreatwarmemorial.org.uk/), but this isn't Remembrance Sunday, so it's a moot point.

stpatricksbhoy

That wasn't quite the point I was trying to put across and I apologise if I sounds as if I'm doing those have have died as a disservice. I'm proud of those that faught in the Great Wars, the Second World War especially.

I was trying to express my opinion that a minute silence that remembers the death of soldiers in past wars should not be looked upon as a political statement. They should a moment to lament the fact that these wars have actually happened and that people have needlessly died whether they are British, Irish, German, Polish, or Italian etc. Whether you agree with the cause or not should be irrelevent.

I wasn't refering to the World Wars when I mentioned the 'fool's cause' part. I was trying to emphasise that a soldier does not decide which nation their country will start a war with. I think it would disrespectful to disrupt a minute silence for a soldier who had fallen in Iraq for example despite not agreeing with the decision to go to war there in the first place.

AULDHEID,

my grandfather was an old indian fighter.
P.S....my grandmother was an old indian.

twotribesCSC.

Antrim_Bhoy - Fair enough.

The one thing I would counter with is that I dont think the poppy is there to actually remember the wars themselves but the people who lost their lives in them.

Maybe I'm just being pedantic though :)

Auldheid, I can honestly say that a reference to RST was taken as unfair and unreasonable in the midst of a debate. As I said previously I have my own view, expressed it, and would never dream of imposing that view on anyone else. I embrace opinions and difference and did yours also up to a point where you seemingly without much joy chose to represent those who had disagreed with you as having more in common with RST than their own kin here on CQN.

I found your comment offensive and unfair and believe the charge was completely unjustified.

In response to what you see as Celtic doing what is right for the club, I understand why you would say that, and I believe I did make inferences that this was the case when I said that by disprupting this gesture in any way would give the press, police etc. the ammunition they so greatly desire to use against our club. However, I do disagree with the club imposing political symbols, religious beliefs, or anything along those lines upon anyone and as I advocated will be writing to the club.

Each man should have the freedom to hold his own beliefs as I have repeatedley stated, that is my issue with it and if that is narrowminded I clearly need to look up the meaning or the word.

Antrim Boy

Can I add something about why I made the RST comment.

There is a wolf in me that I do not like, that I do not want to feed.

Sometimes when the huns do things like TFS it brings out the wrong wolf in me. But that is not who I choose to be, not the wolf I want to feed.

In my experience every one has that wolf in us and we need to take care that in attacking the wolf out there (the huns) we do not end up the same.

That was why I made the reference, not to say you were like them but to say.

Take care.

With thanks to fantas'tic on Celtic minded

Croy ASDA

PistonBroke - I wouldn't worry, as you can probably tell from my previous posts I tend to be a little pedantic myself! :-)

bhoy sean - thank you for your explanation we are in agreement and yes the past is littered with fools causes. The soldier is the arm of the state with no say in where or with whom he will fight. If we believe that a war is unjust the ballot box is the place to respond to government, unfortunately most people do not bother to vote.

Antrim Boy

My previous post was written before I read your last one. It says what I would have said anyway, which makes my previous reply all the more heart felt.

I am sorry it hurt you. An old lady once said to me No pain, no gain and she was right but pain is no fun.

Auldheid - Your addition is welcome and appreciated, although I would honestly and without any intentional patronising suggest using the wolf references rather than those of the RST. I like the wolf story, it makes sense and gets across a well-made point in a very imaginitive form, references to RST does not.

Hail hail

Take care

For those who feel strongly about a minutes silence and Celtic wearing a poppy on the hoops, think of the Celtic players who died and dedicate the time to their memory.

No matter our feelings we will be under the microscope and should all do our best to uphold Celtic's reputation.

20 years ago TFOD wouldn't have been requested not to sing any song....changed days.

There are not as many orange walks as there were 20 years ago...changed days.

The Celtic support are without doubt ahead in the songs issue... while TFOD are in a wee tad of bother with TFS.

Kojo is correct..Celtic is a club that accepts all... with none better than the other.

I welcome Celtic supporters from anywhere in the world.
Down through the years I have disagreed with some of my fellow supporters but at the end of the day I would never do anything to harm the club.

Whether the issue is, songs, poppys or anything else...On the park and off the park...we must keep above them.

Let's get ready to celebrate a treble this season!!!

monthetic @ 9:05

What you have written is as close to the lyrics of The Famine Song as I have seen on this or any other Celtic board.

Your sentiments would be welcome on Follow Follow.

monthetic on October 30, 2008 9:05 PM

Very disturbing post.

back to the footie.mcgrory-for-arsenal
bit harsh on maloney, he has been away for a while from us and has barely takena free kick since he got back.
In the meantime he has scored for villa and scotland from free kicks.
MAybe ask some spl keepers if they regard him as a threat, they would know more than us.

To be honest, I keep changing my mind about this poppy controversy. But I will say this:the Irish dimension is always more complex than the mythology.

For example, well before conscription in World War 1 huge numbers of Irish Catholics flocked to join the colours. Even after Southern Ireland achieved some form of statehood in the 1920s large attendances marked Remembrance Day ceremonies in Dublin.

In World War 2 large numbers of Catholic Southern Irishmen again joined the British army to fight Nazism. Indeed, proportionately that Southern Irish contingent won more VCs than any soldiers from the British Empire.

I don't have a problem with people wearing the poppy per se.

Coming from a rich line of Irish republicans there never has been , to my knowledge, a serving british soldier in our family.

However, my wife's great uncle died in the second world war and her granny always wore a poppy to remember him. This was all through the troubles. People knew her reason and respected this.

Over the years, the symbol became increasingly politicised and became a sectarian identification in the 6 counties.

Today, in the twisted logic that is out there the british media and government force it's wearing upon all it's employees. See SKY and BBC et al, although BBC NI's Donna Traynor got into some trouble a few years ago over her refusal to wear it. Reason being, if you wear it, you remember the fallen dead, you support the veterans, you support the troops, you legitimise the war. That is where I have my problem.

I don't like the thought of all Celtic's players having to wear the Poppy. It should be their choice. I can't speak for any player but who's to say that Naka, Andreas Hinkel, Massimo, Darren O', or shock horror Neil Lennon would prefer not to be political and not wear the poppy.

Celtic have to go along with this because to do otherwise would give all our detractors ammunition to attack us and brand us as sectarian and just as bigotted as them.

It's a no-win situation for Celtic but if I were a Celtic player I would not be too happy. Hope they don't release a limited edition jersey with poppy as i'll not be buying it.

Kojo

doffed

I pity anyoone who would be uncomfortable with another choosing to wear a poppy.
If you don't want to wear one - fine.
Otherwise, let's treat the memory of these poor souls with the respect they deserve.

Dublinbhoy

I'm sorry you feel the way you do. I can only say that I don't understand because your expeiences are not mine. I would wear a poppy with both pride and humility in trying to remember many people better and braver than I who gave their
lives so that I could enjoy my freedom. Clearly to you the poppy is a symbol of something very different. I don't know the answer and only wish I did. I hope that people will try only to remember with respect those who died with good intent, as so many did.

I think Maloney has scored enough goals from free kicks over the years to be considered good at them, if not an expert. The only complaint I have of him is that he doesn't know his range, he is always trying to score from 30 yards or from awkward angles when it would be much better for a cross instead. Nakamura is always much more intelligent when it comes to his decisions but then again he doesn't really have a restricted range!

We're quite blessed with free kick takes with Robson, Maloney and Naka about. There has been plenty of times in the past when we didn't have any decent free kick takers. I would like to see Hartley hit some occassionally as he scored them regularly with Hearts.

bhoy sean

I'm trying to remember - it seems to be a while since Aiden has taken a direct one in a good position.

Perhaps only when Shunsuke is injured ?

We have been stating on here and other forums for years ,that we are not just like them. That they have a much bigger problem than us with bigotry.

The casual observer reading the debate on here about the rights and wrongs of wearing a poppy ,would be correct to state that we have our fair share of unforgiving bigots ourselves.

The loss of human life on all sides should be remembered with reverence and respect.

There are times when i despair at the pot calling the kettle black amongst our support.

Some need to take a good look at there own predjudices.

Those without sin?

Derbyshirebhoy

What do you think the reaction would be if Celtic players wore Easter Lillies on their strips to commemorate those braver than us who laid down their lives on Easter Week. Given Celtics Irish connection such a gesture would be appropriate but woul it be perceived as respecting war dead or condemned as a political gesture.

Haven't been on here of late, have started a new job and working crazy hours but last night's fast flowing football was a joy to watch.Onwards to Saturday then revenge on Manchester, am I dreaming or what?

As for poppies I'll wear one in respect of all men who fell in terrible wars and for my Dad a Marine Commando blown up during World War 2;he survived, but many didn't.

eventheolivesarebleeding

Please enlighten me why refusal to wear a poppy makes you an "unforgiving bigot".

whitedoghunch

I forgot about Aiden. He is another who is good from the edge of the box. To be honest I'm not worried who takes them when Naka isn't about as long as it isn't Naylor!

Martin47,

I have never worn a Poppy, either red or white.

Some of my extended family treat the Remembrance Sunday with the utmost respect while I on the other hand tend to think of it as an Establishment organised event, more to do with show than actual care.

If the care was real, we as a country would look after our injured soldiers, Erskine Hospital would not have to beg borrow or nearly steal to exist and indeed flourish.

Can I tell you about a recent experience Mrs 42 and I had.

We were celebrating our wedding anniversary (Nov. 10th) with a weekend in Pitlochry. We were staying in Scotlands Hotel and left the hotel to go to Mass on the Sunday morning.

Along the road we caught up with the British Legion who had just finished their Remembrance Service at the local Cenotaph.

The old soldiers, the serving army, the T As, the local cadets and Boys Brigade were all in the procession.

Following the procession we came to realise that it was heading to the same place as us, the Catholic Church.

The entire procession took their places in the Church, the opening music, played by a military brass band was Rule Britania and the closing music was God Save the Queen.

Not one of the "Guests" took pert in the Mass, none knelt down, none received Holy Communion.

We were astounded and somewhat upset at the choice of music, if that was what it took for the Catholic Church to host such an event, then we thought it too much to ask.

I have never quite forgiven that PP for that Mass.

As an aside, do you know any good ex-Larkhall Catholics?

I do.

Martin.

eventheolives - I also believe the loss of human life on all sides should be remembered with reverence and respect, that is why I wear a white poppy. does that make me a bigot because i have a different belief and way in which to remember all those who have died in conflicts?

I thought that part of the Christian belief was being able to forgive?

John Johnson was shot twice on 30 January 1972 and died on 16 June 1972. His family is convinced that he died prematurely and that his death was due to the injuries received and trauma he underwent on 'Bloody Sunday'.

When you're putting your money in a tin to buy a poppy or standing in revered silence at the Celtic game I ask you to remember the names of the people above some only children who were murdered by the British army on 30th January 1972.

None of the perpetrators of this cruel despicable act have ever had to front court to account for their actions far less atone for them.

That these "brave" murderers are the beneficiaries of support from the Earl Haig foundation puts it out of reach for me.

Perhaps instead of remembering only the British war dead we should be remembering all vicitms of war, a not inconsiderable amount of whom were victims of the British themselves.

Eventheolivesarebleeding,

Your right on the money there.

very well put and that is why I won't wear a poppy, I have often crossed the sea to Ireland to attend the bloody Sunday marches and those murders still stick in my craw. But I have said earlier and still say it's personal preference and I would support anybody's right to choose, I don't think any of the posters tonight have said otherwise?

The bloody Sunday enquiry still goes on ........lies and skullduggery.......the empire protects their own even if its murder.

The loss of those lives and the conspiracy that kept the full truth ,plus the lack of remorse shown by the British armed forces and the British government is a disgrace.

It is easy for me to say because i have no direct loss .For peace to last all sides must show forgiveness.

I understand your feelings ,i am more detached than you are ,and obviously therefore less affected by troubles than you have been.

Looking from afar,i just want peace .

fergus - looking to the game i hope you are right. the jam tarts game is so important and we need to fully concentrate on it, but i think WGS has been excellent at not letting the players lose focus on the job at hand since he has taken over.

do you think Cilian will start or we will go with the four dwarves macdonald, shaun, mcgeady, naka...?

I will not accept that I am a bigot because I do not wear a poppy. There are many charities that I do not donate to and many that I do. Again this is my choice - my money - my conscience. You wear one if you want. You can wear womens underwear too if you like. Makes no odds to me.

I am also notorious (yes notorious) that although I do not speak during minutes silence I continue with my work. I have been asked many times about this - by people that I know are using the minute to think about their next meal etc - and tell them its not compulsory that I stop working. Im not very popular because I am not a sheep.

I dont go to the poxy staff nights out - Im not a hypocrite - I have to smile and be professional but I dont need to socialise with people I dont really like.

I also refuse to go contribute to leaving sheets etc for people I dont like - its no secret I dont like certain people and Im not gonna sign their cards with best wishes or stand at their leaving do and shake their hand. In fact I dont even go to the canteen these days when someone I like is leaving - I cant stand the hypocrisy of the boss who made his life a misery standing there with a smile and a "funny story" then handing the guy a card and gift as if it was the company who donated it. I prefer to speak to the guy one to one and in give personal cheerio.

Am I really a bad person for all that - or just honest

Whether some of you like it or not it is a fact that Celtic are a British Football Club. If the Scottish Football Clubs decide to wear a poppy on their strips to commemorate those who have died fighting for the army of their country then i do not see any problem whatsoever.

If the Munster Rugby team decided to commemorate the 1916 Rising I wouldn't imagine any English supporters who travelled over to a game and disrespected this would find much sympathy.

T-shirts at football matches are pretty insignificant matters when compared to people respectfully commemorating the dead.

What the feck this has to do with sport i'm not sure. I had hoped to find this board discussing a fine performance by Celtic Football Club last night. It seems that some people are just looking for something to get annoyed about.

ONWARDS WITH GORDON STRACHAN

A few thoughts about the poppy issue, from someone who has never chosen to wear a poppy:

1. If Celtic have been asked to take part in this initiative by the SPL, then I believe we do not, as a club have any viable alternative but to comply with this request.

2. This being the case, I believe anyone unhappy with this should protest by non-attendance, or silence, but not by jeering or any action that could embarrass the club.

3. The poppy issue has several angles and the broad church that is the Celtic support will never have a collective voice on this issue, unlike every other club. The reason we’re different on this issue, is our strong connections with Ireland, and many supporters are resistant to partaking in any show of affinity with the British Army with it’s awful record in Ireland. Other Celtic supporters choose to focus purely on the charitable aims of the Earl Haigh Fund. They may feel that either the Ireland issue is irrelevant to them, or that it’s time to move on.

4. Whatever your stance, respect for the views of others should be paramount. No-one should be pilloried for wearing, or not wearing a poppy.

I have to say I'll be pretty disappointed if there's any disruption of a minutes silence. Celtic are the welcoming, open to all club, yes? On that basis it's only logical to assume that a sizeable portion of our support will have reasons to observe the minutes silence.

If you stay silent during the minute it doesn't necessarily mean you support it, you can have your own thoughts and remembrances, but booing during it or disrupting it in some way is DELIBERATELY offending a significant portion of our own support, nevermind what neutral observers would make of it.

It's not what this club is about.

Personally my biggest problem with the fund is that it's named after a man that deliberately sent men to get butchered. He didn't care about the men and I find it hugely ironic that a care fund is named after him.

So many of the arguments on here tonight do not work.

Posted by them who have never had to have a harsh look at him or herself

the achievements of the writers of the Corpus, the practitioners of Hippocratic medicine, and the actions of Hippocrates himself are often commingled; thus very little is known about what Hippocrates actually thought, wrote, and did. Nevertheless, Hippocrates is commonly portrayed as the paragon of the ancient physician.

PS I know he set it up and was active in promoting the needs of ex-servicemen but my reading on this suggests that it was not some sense of guilt that drove him so but possibly some political ambition.

fergus - all the best. i don't like Shaun up top either but on 2 occasions this season i have seen 1 striker up front with shaun, aiden, naka interchanging behind, attacking from the midfield and it worked well.

i hadn't even remembered that after naka's brutal treatment against Killie that he probably wouldn't make it for the weekend. i guess on that note the only questions would be who plays at left-back Naylor/Wilson/Robson and who plays alongside Broonie in midfield, Hartley or Robson? getting excited already...

off to bed to dream of P. McCourt starting at Tynecastle and scoring a screamer in the last minute to win the match :-)

POPPY DEBATE.

We are in a totally "No Win" situation on this one and i think it is as blatant a trap as you can imagine, you cant have a ex- Secretary of state for defence as chairman and not back a request from military veterans.

although i wouldn't mind being the script writer on the introduction of the proposed minutes silence.

"in memory of ALL people/persons who have died in ALL wars"

Whatever takes place a week on saturday i would remind all supporters that the "60" seconds could either cement our reputation as a club open to all with a strong Irish heart and strong Scottish bones a credit both "Celtic" nations or a club where we will forever be branded as part of the "old firm" one as bad as the other, TFS v No poppy Day etc.

I will be in the concourse in silence until 3.01pm and would urge others who may disagree with the actions of the club to do likewise.

They aren't doing a minute's silence at Celtic Park though, are they?

McAlpine's fusileer

I will probably see you there

There may be significantly less catering available at half time that day after the rush at the pie stall around 3pm

Wonder if the staff there are told not to serve or talk during that minute.

I have to admit to being a bit depressed about the poppy debate tonight. The choice to wear or not to wear is entirely an individual one. To object to others wearing one or indeed object to others standing up for rememberance is the very antithesis of what Celtic is about.

My grandfather, an Irish republican from Galway, fought in the Great War at 16 to send home a wage. Thankfully he returned safe. My other grandfather, Scottish born and bred, lost his life at sea in WW2.

They both loved Celtic. Celtic represented so much to both of them. Celtic represents so much to so many of us.

If you look for a British or Loyalist angle to the poppy you will find it, I'm sure. Because you want to.

If you look for a Celtic or Irish connection to the poppy you will find. If you want to.

Instead of objecting to it, why not reflect on those thousands of Celts, Irish and Scots, who fought in the two WWs - or indeed the Celtic players who fought in those wars. Use it to remember our own who were sent to fight and die as young men. If there should be a minutes silence somewhere in your lifetime, use it to remember our own rather than decry others who may not be of your own backround.

Really, really disappointing that this debate is even taking place.

Paul67, if you're around, do you know if Celtic are planning to observe the silence and/or ask the players to wear poppies? Perhaps then we can get this onto a level of reality rather than hypothesising about something that might not even be happening?

this is all poppycock.

What's the craic with other countries ie what if anything do the Belgians,Dutch,or French do to commemorate the fallen in two world wars. Then there's Germany, now reunited,Poland,Croatia,Norway,Italy and Serbia and the list goes on what about Spain what do they commemorate,or does it depend on which region you're in?

The Swiss what about them they're neutral,do they do anything?

I'm kinda glad i started this hoo haa at 11:18am as it's obviously very necessary.

As a long time lurker I have been content to sit on the sidelines and marvel at the depth and passion of those who contribute to the wonderful debates of this site. However today’s poppy debate has drawn me in.

I was born and grew up in Lanarkshire a short distance from where the man who makes this site possible hails from. I have never met Paul67 or any of the other members of the CQN family in person but I am sure we have walked the same streets , attended the same church, drank in the same pubs, stood on the same terraces and sang many of the same songs. I am proud of both my Irish and Scottish heritage. I have supported Celtic as a boy and throughout the 24 years that I served in the British Armed Forces and I will continue to support this club until the day that I die.

At the appropriate time I will pay my respects to all those men and women who have paid the ultimate price. My thoughts will initially be with those who gave their lives in the fight against fascism in the Great Wars and in doing so I will remind myself of the futility of wars and the misery that it brings. I will wear my poppy with pride and when I look at my young daughter standing by my side I will remember those men and women from all sides, of all conflicts, who did not return to those that they loved.

Amongst those in my thoughts will be the following men who were lucky enough to have worn the colours of the club that I hold close to my heart.

Leigh Roose
Patrick Slavin
John McLaughlin
Peter Johnstone
Archie McMillan
Donald McLeod
Robert Craig
William Angus

There is much about our family to be proud of. We say we are so much different from those with whom we are often associated with and I believe this to be true but I also believe that our actions will be seen in the same way that their words are heard.

Make your own choice on whether or not to wear the poppy but please respect the choices that others make and protect the reputation of our club.

Dan Bell The Guardian, Friday November 10 2006

Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow has accused his critics of "poppy fascism" after provoking controversy over his decision not to wear a poppy on air.

The absence of a Remembrance Day emblem on his lapel while reading the news has led to viewer complaints to Channel 4 News and Snow's blog on the programme's website.

Snow, 59, argues that he has the right not to wear items that could be seen as making statements. On his blog, Snow said: "I am begged to wear an Aids ribbon, a breast cancer ribbon, a Marie Curie flower ... You name it, from the Red Cross to the RNIB, they send me stuff to wear to raise awareness, and I don't. And in those terms, and those terms alone, I do not and will not wear a poppy ... Additionally there is a rather unpleasant breed of poppy fascism out there - 'he damned well must wear a poppy!'."

He compared the situation to the recent controversy over the wearing of a crucifix by BBC news presenter Fiona Bruce.

"Fiona Bruce is to be allowed to continue to wear a crucifix, or a cross-shaped item of jewellery. I am allowed to wear unspeakably bright ties. But there is a world of difference there that we should be assertive about. My ties are abstract - I do not believe in wearing anything that represents any kind of statement."

Gulf war veteran Charles Plumridge, 66, from Romsey, Hampshire, said that not to wear the poppy was an insult to war dead. "The red poppy has been a symbol for so many years and he should not be interfering with it. Any questioning of the poppy can only cause anguish to the people that have worn it with pride over the years, the families of those who gave their lives and those people who are still doing so."

Royal British Legion spokesman Stuart Gendall was more conciliatory: "Jon Snow is completely entitled to his opinion about whether or not he decides to wear a poppy. While we are extremely grateful for the support shown to us by all those in the public eye who wear a poppy in the two weeks leading up to Remembrance Sunday, we see this as a voluntary gesture of support and would never prescribe when and how any member of the public wears one."

Snow emphasised that his decision had nothing to do with a lack of respect for service veterans. "I respect our armed forces, the sacrifice and the loss, and like others I remember them on Remembrance Sunday. That's the way it is," he wrote. But he added: "I won't be wearing a black tie for anyone's death - I don't for my own relatives, so why on earth would I for anyone else's?"

I`ve ate a few pies from that butchers so we better make it it an XL apron now

o1bhoy

I know from your posts that will be a happy day for you. God speed.

You better not be putting the hound into the kennels !!!

I have no objection whatsoever with anyone choosing to commemorate the victims of war whatever country they are from. There are war memorials all over the country that enable anyone who wants to to visit and pay their respects at any time of year.

My problem is specifically with the Earl Haig Foundation, named after a war criminal who sents hundreds of thousands of working class men from many nations to certain death for no reason at all other than a minor fall out between European aristocrats.

It is an exercise in British triumphalism and imperlialism and is anually hijacked both in Scotland and the 6 counties by the Orange Order as another excuse to remind us our place in society.

I posed the question earlier and I will again. Would we be allowed to put Easter Lillies on our strips?

were you the beanpole, silver-haired dapper dan man with the side shed??

Make no mistake; do not believe
For soldiers dead I do not grieve.
But then I'm sad humanity
Does not yet have the 'eyes' to 'see'
The reason why we all can kill
By proxy, is we have no will
To find the way to get along
Because we must give up our 'song'.

No God, don't try to change my life!
It matters not it causes strife.
It is a life I will defend
But with the life of a dear friend,
A brother, sister, father, s0n.
I will remember everyone.
Two minutes I will gladly give
To those who die that I may live.

It just does not somehow seem right
That over our beliefs we fight.
I wish we all would volunteer
To give up theories we hold dear.
Then we would have to embrace peace.
Remembrance Days would also cease.
A world though that is without hate
Would still give cause to celebrate.

We could rejoice in lives not lost;
In living life without that cost.
We could remember when we found
Togetherness on common ground.
We could recite some poetry
About how pleasant peace can be.
To demonstrate we really care
White poppies on our hearts we'd wear.

Undoubtably there are many members of our society who hold views similar to that of Mr Plumridge. There are also many who hold the views of Jon Snow. One of the reason that i choose to remain in the forces was that I believe people have a right to make these choices for themselves. Comedians/Performers do what comes naturally, they say things ans some times they work, it can be hit or miss, the responsibility to producing this episode lies squarly at the producer who gathered the recordings and decided to go with it. The 24 yo independant producer for bbc passed and it passed his boss who didnt pick up on it.

It got broadcast, two people comlpained about swearing, bbc norm, it became public press knowledge and complaints raised as it became press fodder.
Thus all were now out in the public and no one was going to gain.

In this time of serious world issues we now have a first page story about unfair slander, but watch the media and watch the which hunt against the man who is earning what he was offered. Newsnight ran with this as thier main story?

Not defending anyone but it is a classic example of media bandwagoning.

The two wolves IS a better way to make the point but as I said the worst wolf in me snarled at what I saw as the worst wolf in others. In snarling I might have chosen my target or expressed myself better but the intent, badly aimed as it was, was for the betterment of the ones being snarled at.

My right wolf just needs more feeding. It always does - in everyone.

One the decision not to wear the poppy: where that is because of some real and experienced or even imagined past hurt the refusal to forgive does not mean the unforgiver is a bigot. Of course not, it simply means they are not ready to forgive - yet. In my expeience sooner or later the pain and consequences of holding on to past wrongs and resenting them demands a spiritual price. It turns a generous spirit into a mean one. It robs us of our joy and replaces it with sorrow and pain.

But forgiveness is a much misunderstood subject which is why it is often rejected. There has been lots of interesting research into it that anyone can read at this link. It sets out what it is, what it is not and the steps in the process.

http://www.forgiveness-institute.org/

Interestingly enough the Director of the IFI has spent a number of years recently in NI helping to create a better understanding of forgiveness and help with its practical application.

I hope some are stimulated enough by what has come out of this discussion on poppies and the reactions to it to visit the link.

Had the matter received no focus to all intents and purposes it did not exist in any other form than a bad joke.

Once it came under focus it attracted meaning and nothing stimulates debate than trying to work out what something means. We do it all the time here on CQN for example. Focus on something, say what we think it means then debate the rightness or otherwise of that meaning according to our personal experiental observation. Its just something humans do.

The trick is to be aware of it and not give it too much importance.
Six months to a year from now it will have fallen out of focus and the main participants will be back in work.

Much ado about nothing.

Heard a good insult today. Bundle of people trying to organise a night out Friday. 'Oh, Friday's Hallowe'en, I'm busy' says one. 'How, are you hiring out your face?' says another.

I am a Republican.I have been inside British Army pigs and have been manhandled and abused, stopped for no reason other than my address and because I lived in Republican West Belfast.
I was also inside Long Kesh as part of a Christmas concert, and at the end all the internees sang TBOTOB.
The song was recorded and if anyone has an original copy they will see that all the proceeds from sales went to the N.I. Civil Rights Movement.I was the singer.
As a Republican I cannot deny to others what was denied to me--freedom of speech and expression. Therefore the wearing of a poppy means something to the wearer, and I will respect that. That the wearing of the Easter Lily is not given the same respect by some is their concern and shows them up for what they are.Whether others like it or not, brave men fought and died in two World Wars so that we can be where we are today.Progress, like peace, comes dropping slow.
Behave like the Celtic support always do,with dignity.
Now stuff Hearts six this weekend.

To address the last smart remark first, a famous philosopher once said that ex-Larkhall Catholics are invariably the salt of the earth, the bravest of the brave and peerless examples of male beauty. In a very real way, I am living proof of this - as you very well know.

As for my previous post, I was merely trying to illustrate that British imperialism still had a significant impact on Ireland and on the Irish probably until as late as the 1950s.

As you well know our fathers - whom I hope are in heaven - were both signed up for the anti-Hitler war. Our grandfather - the son of Irish parents - signed himself up for the war against the Kaiser. Our uncle Frank found himself - willy-nilly - at Cassino in 1943 at the age of 17 and then later in Greece until 1947.

The narrative of war from our fathers and our grand-father is, for the most part, the story of the decency of the ordinary soldier. That's why I might feel inclined to buy a poppy.

What happened to you at Sunday mass stinks. It's Scotland's Shame and it hasn't gone away in my lifetime or yours.

Nice hearing from you,

Martin

The E tims artcle.

Brilliant piece of work. I heard the C Powell speech referred to and thought it a clicher for change at time.

The connection to Rangers and their need for a similar catalyst is quite brilliant.

Great eTims article, powerful reading.

I'm very interested in this line line: (referencing Rangers, and the flags they fly)

"on October 14th 1936 they did fly the Nazi flag"

Was this a reference to Billy Fullerton's (i.e. the original billy Boy) membership of Oswald Mosley's British Fascist Party?

Agree 100% with your post, you could paraphrase as "live and let live". And it would be wonderful if people could adopt this approach to wearers of both Poppy & Easter Lily.

As an aside, it is hard to beat Barleycorn's version of TBOTOB.

Very well said.

Re: the poppy issue, as an "auld haun" I remember that it used to be that poppy day was about the dead from the first world war, and Also the "enemy" dead were not excluded from this, maybe as time has passed we've forgotten these important little things.

A bit like the Rangers fans with their Fascist salutes, not really remembering the vermin who used the same form of salute herding innocent men women and children into killing pits in Eastern Europe not that long ago.

Paul67,

Last night was total football from Celtic and i loved every minute, only thing that scares me is the flash back to the tommy burns days, hope i'm wrong but would they bully us off the field playing like that at the bigotdome on the 27th?

Oregon
The poppies issue originated from the poem
"In Flanders Field "and was first publicised by a Canadian serviceman ,whose name was McCrae.
I was intrigued by the assertion a few days ago that it was originally an American thing which was taken over {hijacked might have been the word used} by the British.
Looked up a website where this is confirmed.
It would seem that all the venom directed at British imperialism and war criminals should have targeted Americans and Canadians instead.

I wouldn`t worry about that.Wee Gordon will bring out the heavy squad for that occasion.See half-tine last night,Hartley for Naka.

Thom the tim@12.05,while we can differ about Donatis peformance on tuesday,i would suggest that you are stertching it just a little, when you say that our goal came from his charge through the middle,as you so rightly point out, this was followed by,not one,but two corner kicks, surely you are not giving Massimo credit for the ensuing goal,if so,then we can argue that Arturs goal kick, some two miutes beforehand, was,in fact, the real catalyst for Skippys strike.I am all for giving credit where it is due,and would love to be very wrong regarding MD's future, but not at the expense of my credibility.

Squire Danaher & Ulysses Magoo (Love the monikers)

Apologies my attempted humour about the parochialness of Lanarkshire had unintended consequences.

Squire I acknowledge your greater knowledge in this area as I am not religious in any way. For my education though I was under the impression that all christians were catholics (whether they liked the term or not). It is the Roman Catholic Church that may be forbidden in the land that time forgot (Stonehouse).

I also use the term catholic when asked to describe my taste in music. It really annoys bigots.

Anyway no offence was meant by the use of the word Chapel.

There's been a couple of references to "the fight against fascism in the Great WARS (sic)" from posters in this debate.

Now, I might well need a lesson in history here but I thought the Great War was fought because a duck called Archie was shot in The Bosnia. And that Britain joined in because they were raping the Sabine weemin again (an historically recurring pastime that seems to be!).

Anyway, just to be different I might wear a carnation.

Ibrox parade for soldiers

« Previous « PreviousNext » Next »View GalleryPublished Date: 31 October 2008
RANGERS and Inverness fans will get the chance to pay tribute to troops returning to Scotland from Afghanistan during a special half-time parade at Ibrox tomorrow.

Members of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 5th battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland, have just returned from a tour of Afghanistan and will be invited on to the pitch at the break of the SPL fixture .

A collection will be made at the match in aid of Poppyscotland, the charity that supports ex-servicemen and women.

Rangers assistant coach Ally McCoist was looking forward to the occasion, saying:

"Footballers are often regarded as heroes but the people who serve and fight on the front-line for their country are the real heroes and it will be an honour for us to have them at Ibrox."

Sergeant Major David Robertson said: "

Gestures like this make us feel appreciated and I thank Rangers for the kind invitation."

Reports today that naka has joined the lengthy injury list and is a doubt for the Manure game. The list now reads

Loovens

McManus

Crosas

Nakamura

Samaras

that list is a half of a very good side

i just hope that the huns get the same luck at some stage , particularly at CB ...if they had 2 missing ..they would be left with Dailly and A N Other

The strength of our squad will be tested this month thats for sure.

But dont forget TFOD have managed without their one man team until now and he will be back to win the player of the month for November.

Very well said. A few of my many cousins have been in the forces. One in particular ended up in Macedonia , Africa , Afganistan and Iraq. A quiet more gentle lad you could not meet , it still puzzles me that he was a para. It might be that work was hard to find. If I can get him to talk he talks about building roads from Afghan Villages to schools so that the children can try to get an education that might mean something for their future. He talks about providing food and water and basic living standards. He never ever talks about fighting but I know he wasn't lying on a couch blogging. He just came out recently , finding it hard to get work. He might not have come back. Many haven't . It is beyond reason not to honour those who died for our freedom. Anzac day finds fewer and fewer diggers marching each year as the survivors of wars die peacefully and yet... the dawn service is getting bigger each year. I took my own children out this year at 5 a.m and will again next year. Respect.

Very smart move from Rangers on the soldiers. Am sure it's designed to put pressure on us, to flush out members of our support whose instinctive reflex is to oppose any display of British militarism (and who feel the need to be vocal about this).

Good PR for them, implicitly designed to shine a spotlight on us.

jinkysboy does that mean Caldwell and DOD will be in the middle. Excellent. Who will get a chance up front. Nothing like the deep end to see who wants it.

McManus is back in training but as its a hamstring I would reckon he wont pay against hearts so looks like GC and DOD.

Up front - I have a feeling he might go with Skippy on his own at the start with a strong 5 across the middle.

If I get the team correct that will be a 1st under WGS

What about Celtic getting someone along to play the anti war song

"The Green Fields of France" sorry can't do the link thing.

This is my tribute to those who fought in World War One, in fact all vets of all wars. As a solider, I know the waste of war first hand and WW I was one of the most wasteful. But at the same time, I know you must fight for your freedoms. Eric Bogle wrote the song, Green Fields of France, also known as No Man's Land. Piet Chielens, coordinator of the In Flanders Fields War Museum in Ypres, Belgium, once checked all 1,700,000 names that are registered with the Commonwealth War Commission. He found no less than ten Privates William McBride. The song is covered by the group Dropkick Murphy.

Michael Collins,

Very simplistic and old-fashioned reading of the Great War. You should catch up on some newer texts - Hew Strachan and others argue convincingly that this was a war worth fighting, and that for Britain not to have confronted Germany in 1914 would have led to a much greater conflagration in the years to come.

Haig was a soldier, his orders were to break through in northern France. This he did, at appalling cost. But when has any war ever been clean and simple?

You call him a war criminal, yet as far as I am aware he has never been tried or convicted (even posthumously) on such a serious offence. It's a serious accusation to throw around, particularly when it appears to be based on your opinion and little else.

As for the event being hijacked. My (Irish) grandfather fought for Britain in Burma. He died still unable to talk about the horrors he witnessed there. He wore a poppy every year.

I have Italian family who fought and died for the partisans fighting against Mussolini. Every year, they wear their poppies.

Under no circumstances will I allow pondlife like the OO to hijack a remembrance of scarifices made by members of my family. I suggest you ignore them.

They don't understand the past, and they struggle to live in the present. They have no future.

this British Army that goes around the world fighting for justice and freedom! is that the provisional wing?

because the "old" british army that as hung around Ireland this last few hundred years has been getting a real bad press.

Antsman I have watched a few spurs games. My china plate is an in the blood yid. He is still standing by Mutton but I have to say he is being caught out big time. One season wonder?. Seriously when our own critics go for big Mick ???? We want the big man with us. Calderwood weathered the storm and is now universally acknowledged as a player.

Thank you Paul for giving Donati credit where he clearly deserved it. Skoosh is sounding like the grudging way the support accepted Calderwood last year Thats great news . Herr Hinkel you can do it too mate. Be a great Celt. I can't think of a single player that I want to leave except for the sad Bobo Balde.

One day in the not to distant j tittor future it will be acknowledged by most of the Celtic family that WGS has built a sustainable squad and that all of our hoops are championees.

jinkysboy you mght be right with five in the middle but what better chance to chance it. We won't win the big Cup this year so the big guns should be in every domestic game , all the cups . Celtic park will demand two forwards for the MU game . Is Hutcheson fit ? . Cillian Sheridan. Haven't actually seen the lad play yet. Games like this are made for having a mad punt.

this point may already have been raised

but I think celtic are shooting themselves in the foot here as there is no way their will be universal silence if it is asked for for this reason. Then we'll be all over the papaers again (and please no do-gooders who never go to games come baclk with 'ah but its the fans fault) I for one would not boo but I would merily keep on talking or shouting or whatever as this silence is not representitive of me or millions of fans across the world.

we should not pander to them!

DD

donegaldanny I am not the Millions but I would respect the silence. This is not a big ask. I agree many will have stand bravado and not use the nut.

taurangabhoy

Bens getting near the 1st team now - scored a hat trick on Monday in the reserves. He is a big strong boy

Cillian has apprently only played 90 mins half a dozen times in the last year and is a big lanky bhoy with a bit of pace.

Horses for courses I suppose.

Indeed we need 2 up front at CP for the Manure game and Sammi ras will not be far away for that one by all accounts

jinkysboy Cheers for that i'll have to go to night school to get on the night shift obviously:)
On a serious note i think it's the obvious choice for us as it encompasses all of our feelings about war and its futility for the common man.
Celtic could and should do a lot better than just joining in with the British jingoistic version of things.

I suggest a leaflet on every seat at Celtic Park explaining our stance with a half time rendition of "The Green Fields of France" followed by a minutes silence to honour the fallen of all sides in all wars.
This would also i feel strike a chord with the very international make up of our squad.

joinedupthinkingCSC

Or is that too political for our chairman?

Tarraunga

I'm talking about the millions of Irish and Irish descended celtic fans (you may be one I don't know) but would celtic be so quick to act if a request were made to honour a minutes silence on easter weekend for the rising?

I'm from Goath Dobhair in co.donegal and my good lady is from the birth place of Michael Gaughan and I know the feelings of the irish celtic fans in the majority do not support this,FACT.

Lets just see what happens, does anyone really expect it to be utter silence? If you do you're bigger folls than brand and ross

DD

gallagher

That's an interesting shout, Green Fields of France or maybe even The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.

But even if Celtic did do that, we'd stil be pilloried for being different.

jinkysboy thanks for that so Ben Hutcheson has a chance and maybe even Sammie. Can't help it mate I am getting excited. Just been off work to look after the wife so can't take the morning of work next week but won't be getting much work done. Hope we stir it up. If not we have a lot to play for this season. Have a good one mate.

donegaldanny,

with the greatest respect, can you not tolerate other people's views for one minute?

by all means hold no respect for the war dead. this is your right.

but do you need to make your disrespect public?

I usually get a poppy and wear it for a few days. I may even watch the ceremony from the cenotaph in London on TV. I`ll probably observe the minute silence on Remembrance Sunday. I think that it`s right to give respect to the families who have lost people in wars. That`s already in place!
I don`t think we need football to get involved, the infrastructure was doing fine without it.

italiabhoy

In what way am I making it public? are we not allowed to voice our opinion on here?

DD

your tolerance of others views is legendary on this blog.

I would play Ben - get in about Hearts as they will try to kick us off the park. They are rank right now and if we get a goal or two up then tehir fans will turn on them.

Regards the poppy / silence issue - my take on this is now :

Its 2008 and its well recognised by all that its the smart man that wins the battles. So lets be smart about this - a minutes silence is no skin off my nose - show respect and fight the good fight the smart way. D

Only a mad general gives his foes the ammunition to shoot hios own troops.

Keep the faith

donegaldanny I have Donegal blood from my Grandfather , I am proud of all of my Celtic heritage. I expect some of our own to give ammunition to the people that hate us.

donegaldanny,

I assume you would be making your disrespect public by "merrily talking or shouting" during the silence, as you posted earlier.

italiabhoy

not at all, I would simply carry on as if it wasn't there, I wouldn't be shouting against it I simply wouldn't recognise it ergo ignore it. in the same way that if some nobody of a celebrity was applauded for the half time draw i'd simply ignore it and carry on, nothing against them I'd just not be interested as is the case here. It is a non event in my eyes and therefore I would not participate.

DD

inkybhoy true, but we could take that criticism, turn it on its head and justify our choice. Let them have their triumphalist Brit establishment fascistesque parades, god knows they love all that.
We on the other hand should do what represents US,our feelings towards war and its futility and horror whilst honourably and in dignified silence, after listening to TGFOF to make us all think about "Man's blind indifference to his fellow man," we can fearlessly hold our minutes silence for all the victims everywhere.

donegaldanny fair response. I can understand why it is not for you and applaud the fact that you would not actively show disrepect to others in the Celtic family who might feel that this is important to them. Cheers.

Still waiting on someone to confirm Celtic are even doing a minute's silence next Saturday - I'm pretty sure they aren't...

I'd play Sheridan up front with Skippy ahead of Hutchison, if only because he's been getting a run in the team recently and hasn't shown any reason why that shouldn't continue.

oneantonrogan, that's the first I've heard of the suggestion, where did you hear it?

Italiabhoy

Haig used an entire generation of working class men as canon fodder sometimes sending thousands of men to their certain deaths in one day.

This was entirely due to the fact that Haig was one of the aristocracy who firmly believed that working class people were worth less than his noble friends watching from a safe distance and expendable.

Their are many war criminals in the world who have not been tried and convicted for many reasons and Haig can, in my opinion, be counted amongst them.

In February 2007 the English rugby team played at Croke Park in Dublin. Given that Croke Park is one of the more prominent shrines to the cause of Irish freedom then there were some misgivings about how the sporting representatives of the former Colonial power, playing one of the proscribed' garrison games' would be greated.

As things turned out both teams and their respective anthems and flags were treated with the utmost respect.

I am sure there were Irish people there who felt uneasy about seeing the English team running onto the sacred turf but they showed commendable restraint.

I would like to think that if a decision is made to have a minute's silence at Celtic Park our support will show their maturity and basic humanity to mark it properly.

donegaldanny,

erm, I see.

So you wouldn't be "respecting" a minute's silence in a public place?

Therefore, your "disrespect" is public, no?

michael collins- and yet the officer class suffered disproportionate casualties...?
