Loovens and Hinkel begin to look settled

| | Comments (486)
There was something reassuring about Celtic on Saturday.  They opened brightly, something I cannot say often, and after losing a two goal lead, and the game's momentum, stepped up a gear and won the points.

Several areas of the team remain a concern.  Any Celtic team without Samaras looks like a pale shadow of a team with him, Scott Brown finished the game strongly in central midfield but he must add consistency, and we did lose two goals at home to Hibs, but there were encouraging signs.

Hinkel played one of his better games for Celtic.  He has been an enigmatic figure since arriving in January; seldom looking like a player who has 17 caps for Germany in his cabinet, but I'm sure we have not seen the best of him yet.

Glenn Loovens is also beginning to look the part having shaken off his early season nervousness.  His goal on Saturday, the second direct from a corner kick in two weeks, is worthy of note on its own.  A few years ago Celtic were criticised for scoring almost exclusively from set pieces but since the departure of The Swede we have looked elsewhere for our concerns.

Those baseball players are a bunch of wimps - rain delayed then postponed the match.

Wouldnt last a season at CP with the weather we had to endure on saturday

Its that time again

Its Rocco,s quiz time

Name 34 players that have played in the Premiership and also for Celtic since the premiership,s inception in 1993.

Now please Bhoys answer in groups of ten (i e when you have 10 players post them on CQN) otherwise I will be replying to people every 2 mins!!

Pasty, only too well :o)))

from last thread regards the George Peat approach would appear it go like this

- Are you sure those songs are ok

- Are you really sure

- Ive been told they are not - so would you consider stopping

- Please

- Aw come on pretty please

- Ok - Im getting serious now - pretty pretty please

- Right thats it - we are now considering applying the rules

- Seriously we are

- Actually we will now dock points off you if it happens again

- Ok thats it - we are now docking points off Celtic

Dobbo - Stevie Smith? :)

Surprised they're letting him go...he was hailed as a definite star of the future before his injury...is this a genuine case of a young starlet losing his potential or Rangers just cashing in on any asset they can?

Correct on all not sure about Agathe myself Agathe was not part of the 34

I am hoping Sylvinho. He is not only a great player, but is also used as a role model by Barca for the youngsters. Great going forward - which is what he will be doing most of the time at Celtic.

We still, IMO need a Senna type player to controll games and play forward passes from the middle of the park, a dimension of our play that is lacking in europe.

cant argue with any of them

Didier the Great made 5 appearances for Villa.

Leslie West[ no relation] does one of the voices for the'Transformers' TV series.

I bet Alan Thompson and Lee Naylor are in there too.

Mark Viduka
Paulo Di Canio
Pierre van Hooijdonk

Paul67,

Agree 100% on Samaras, i cannot believe the difference in him this year, i honestly fancied our chances of sneaking something down in manchester if we played as we did in villareal (our best away performance in the champ lg in my eyes), however, as soon as i heard Samaras was out i'd all but threw in the towel and it was damage limitation.

Disagree on Hinkel, i think he has been a major dissapointment and if it wasn't for the German International 17 caps tag he'd be nowhere near the 1st team, don't forget on Sat when we were attacking he had the freedom of the wing as Riordan is hardly tracking back (ask Mr Strachan about that!) so i'd hoop he looked a bit better on a 2 on 1 situation. I'd like to see Caddis getting a run, certainly on Wednesday night at least.

As for big Glen, the jury is still out, i know he looks promising and is popping up with the goals but first and foremost it's his defending i'm more interested in and we've not seen enough of him yet to make a judgement, the goals from a defender are a bonus.

Doesnt say if it was EPL but he played 5 times and made his debut against Spurs so probably played in the league

He was training with Aston Villa, managed by his former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill, and appeared for their reserves on 29 August 2006, against Reading. His impressive second half performance in this game earned him a short-term deal at Villa Park, which was agreed on September 12. Agathe made his Villa début at home to Tottenham Hotspur, coming on as a sub for Milan Baroš in a 1-1 draw. On 11 January 2007, Agathe parted company with Aston Villa, after they chose not to extend his short term contract.[1]

Missed the boat from last article........

Paul,
I thought Hinkel looked the part when he first arrived linking up well with Naka, then he was injured maybe it has taken a little longer for him to get back to fitness.

like most I would say that when the fullbacks position become less transient it will solidify the team.

gsu

Paul 67 Shun

Do we own Naka's image rights full stop or does that end when his contract expires?

I would have thought that the money we paid for the rights alone would mean they are ours full stop

myself and aw naw were talking about this

I reckon that the £7million mentioned we could possibly receive may not be far away as his image rights are worth way more than what we paid for them at the time (over £1million)

I thought that Hinkel added a bit of steel to his game on saturday which has certainly been missing since he arrived

I agree he had an excellent game

I would take Hinkel anyday over young Wilson.
If Loovens can start heading the ball in our penalty area the way he is in the opposition, I will be well chuffed, as Gary & Stephen really lack in the heading department

Good list. I am beginning to thing that there are more than 34!!

Ok bhoys I reckon all the players have been named

To be fair I had 34 with 3 - 4 that I was unsure of

I reckon there are 45 - 50 though.

Name 8 plsyers that have played for Celtic and Chelsea since 1990.

Wow, that even impressed me!! Over 40 there! Give or take the 10 that are a bit dodgy.

Hinkel was superb on Saturday and with a run of games and some confidence he could become an important player for us. If we bring in cash for Naka I would spend a huge chunk of it on a quality left back. Don't ask me who, though. I don't play Champ Man and haven't watched Eurogoals on Eurosport for years!

Malky McKay played for Watford the year they were up - think that was the year he got back in the Scotland set-up as well. Collins was definitely at Everton post-Premiership set-up.

I agree that Stevie Smith could be an option for Left Back. I don't think he'd cost that much and he looked pretty decent before his long term injury. If he was over that injury, I would give it a go. Their loss, our gain.

Paul67,

Loovens to me looked comfortable as he played in his normal position when he came on.

Hinkel for me had probably had his best game for us on Saturday. Lokked assured in everything he did and to be honest bailed Caldwell out a few times. Here's hoping. Second half in particular he got foward more and showed some signs of how he used to play at Stuttgart.

Alan McInally - Aston Villa & Bayern Munich (did he mention that?)

What do you mean "The Swede"?, Ramon Vega was Swiss ;-)

Therags...

Yeah it is time we went for the jugular right from k.o . Hinkel looked pretty sharp on Saturday and after Wilson' comments on thinking "oh no , now its Tevez" (lack of mental toughness there - guys like Brogan or Hay would be saying 'bring it on')It looks like Andy H. could get a run. Loovens reads a game well, in particular watch his headers - to a hooped shirt. Hibs guy I know told me last year WGS should be playing Broonie 20 yards further forward. On Saturday he was a real menace doing just that. phil Gordon in yesterday's Times really wiped the floor with the H--- support.

Just realised I posted this at the end of the last article after getting the wee ghirl down for her nap, thanks blantyretim!

pablo - hows it going, good to meet you again on Saturday and thanks for the Stella! I'm not sure about the Lisbon Lions playing for Belfast Celtic but some of them definitely played in a tournament run by Moville Celtic in the early 1960s and I'm sure the team name they played under was the Carfin Emeralds.

My Granda and my Dad were there when they played and said the rumours had started in the Pub that afternoon that a few Celtic players were over to win the tournament, which my Granda said carried quite a large cash prize. He tells me it was a Priest that asked one of the players to round up a team to go and play to win the cash for the Parish back home! Not sure how true it is though!

He does say that a wee guy with red hair stood out and instantly recognised him when he made his debut during the season that followed!

On the Chelsea question, Hedman didn't play a competitive game for Chelsea though he did play in a friendly. This question was on Clyde at the weekend and while they were all kissing each others rear ends over getting Hedman they didn't read my text to inform them it was wrong.

oneantonrogan - Paul and Curly mentioned it briefly on Saturday. I think 'Quizking' has offered to help if it ever gets going and Sannabhoy is keen. It would be a great night I'm sure.

There was some contact a few weeks ago re a CQN quiz, a few ideas were floated & I offered my services as a quizmaster but nothing came of it. I think it would be a good night, get everyone together in the one place (BB's?) get some prizes organised maybe raise a bit of cash for the charities.
I'm Edinburgh based but I've no problems doing it Glasgow area,I can provide everything needed (I run Pub Quizzes in a number of Edinburgh pubs)what I can't do is organise it.
If you (or Sannabhoy) want to get it organised I'll do the rest

Qk

How could I forget he was suspended? When you say SPL, is this post 1998? How many are we looking for?

**unnes....

Edgaras Jankauskas of Hearts won with Porto in 2004 (was actually trying to see if Nuno Capucho was still there when I found that out!)

Did Victor who played for St Mirren win the EC with barca

I'm more than happy to get involved in the running of a CQN quiz.

Given the time of year, might be best to leave until the New Year with Xmas nights out coming up and pubs charging extra for hires.

Maybe a few of us could get together in BBs pre/ post a home game to discuss?

oneantonroganm - that's the one I was thinking of! I knew there were at least 2 who played for non Glasgow teams and Ravanelli was the other. Good shout.

Stefan Klos

Gordon_J

Sounds like a plan!

Qk

Franck Sauzee was in that Marseille team alongside Basile Boli

Gordon_J - It was mentioned that maybe a Chapel Hall or something similar might be an idea. I don't often get up to BBs but if it were arranged then I would definitely attend the quiz, though like the 5-a-sides it wouldn't be with any hope of winning!

Im getting fed up correcting myself (first sign of madness I believe) but Victor didnt win the EC with Barca (or St Mirren)

Filip Sebo

Pastyface, tough break for yous kiddo (or is it ??) Only kiddin' :o))

Vmhan aw, yeh still gettin' away with it :o))) Think ma Bhoy has accepted his adopted name of Pablo's son having been asked it so many times recently and jist is well he is efter you tried tae pull a fast one wi the price eh the badges :o)))

P & A, good to see you again anol mate and you've my son to thank fur the Stella and thanks for the info on that game. Expected more folks to know more about it than replied tbh !

Pablo, cheers mate, but if it's anything other than random SPL players of the last 20 years, I'm worse than useless :-) Bagsy someone older than me for the team!

pablo - your bhoy's a top guy, don't know where he gets it from though! ;) The game was discussed on here a few months ago, I think Martin42 knew the details behind it. I wouldn't rely on what my Granda has told me, he's been wrong a couple of times before on stuff that's left me looking a bit daft!

The Beast

i give up with this pc. stuck at 2.21 now...

i wish jtitor was back...:)))

I'm off to get the bhoys from school, I'll leave one for after DBBIA has posted his answers (great question btw!).

How many players can you name who have scored for 5 different Premiership teams? Own goals don't count. I make it there are 13 but there are 3 who have scored for 6 teams if you can get them.

I'll be back on in around an hour before I take them to my Grans for tea.

porridgeandbananas,

St Mary's in the Calton would be a good shout!

How about we get together before the Inverness game on 29/11

Quizking,

Could you drop an email to Paul to pass on to me? Cheers.

Googling has given me some excellent answers that I had no idea about. Suffice to say I now longer believe Djimi Traore to be the worst player to win a European Cup medal!

Whatever happened to Pierre Doumbe - is that the correct spelling - looked impressive, particularly in the AC Milan game before he got injured. With young Kennedy due back in January GS should allow Darren O Dea to go on loan and gain that valuable experience. A lot of unkind words have been written and spoken about the Celts in the past week - men against boys etc.- lets hope we have a full squad fit and well for the return against Manure in Parkhead and kick their arrogant millionaire asses.

Gordon_J - Good shout. I'll try my best to make it up for then. If I'm off work that day then I'll definitely get in, it's just I usually hammer the shifts in just before Christmas and usually leave mrs bananas (who I rudely forgot to introduce to everyone at the 5s) to take the bhoys up to the match. Any place and any night it's arranged would be good for me, particularly if it were held on a Saturday.

porridgeandbananas,

Cool. Talk to you before then ...

Les Ferdinand has scored for 6 different Prm teams

thats where the quit becomes interesting. It will become obvious who´s the best googler

Andy (Sorry Andrew) Cole

Sheringham?

im out of here,
still stuck in the past: like the rearangers..still 2.21......

Has Craig Bellamy scored for 6 teams in the EPL

John Hartson?

Andy Cole, Tony Cottee?

I only resort to googling when my brain stops thinking of things, otherwise you're only cheating yourself (OK, now I sound like my mam).

Porridgeandbananas, I remember being asked this before, but the only ones I can remember are Stan Collymore and Benito Carbone. I'm sure there are more obvious ones.

Chris Sutton (5)

Actually, I'm not even sure about Stan Collymore.

Paul 67
Just a thought on the Naka situation regarding his contract,if we own his image rights until june and he goes in January if we were to hold onto the rights there could be a tidy sum involved in it,hence the inflated transfer fee we are currently reading about, because if he is the Japanese equivalent of Beckham as has been said you can imagine the clamour for the new shirts in Japan.

Two mair Exhibitions, the likes of which he displayed in his last game.. and my Assosciates and assorted Minions....Will be Lobbying Hard, for Herr Hinkel or Hinkle, to be considered for a Membership, in Kojo's "Fair Haired Bhoys" Down Town Strutters, Marching Band.

As you know, invitation and membership,of any Celtic Player, to this August Body, requires a Stunning reversal of Form..which up to the time of invitation, had been indifferent and most disappointing..

Howevahhhhhhhh.. by dint of hard woik and perseverence.. the invitee, had managed to reverse the trend and was now showing.... CONSISTENT IMPROVEMENT IN HIS PERFORMANCES...

Present Membership is composed of only Three Woithies.

Mr.Caldwell, JVOH and Master Brown...

It must be noted at this point...

IMPROVEMENT, and CONSISTENT IMPROVEMENT, is a Paramount Requirement to all INVITEES~~~~~~~~~

Back Sliders,need not apply.

On a different point..

Big Ben... of whom, I am wishing had NOT played today.. although, it is obvious that in scoring a Hat Trick... Big Ben has now permanently switched to Cookin' Wit' Gas.
Big Ben, is a far, far, more promising Talent than Young Cillian...although, I hasten to add..

At this Time..

In the potential careers of both of these youngsters.

Ben, I believe, is a Little More, Mature..

The Age difference aside...

Big Ben. has that "je ne sais quois"... that is NOT... a "je ne sais quois", AT AWE~..

Fur, Ah Know darn well wit he Hiz...

He HIZ.... PRESENCE!!!

Noo, Presence, is no something that ye kin define in Plain English...

FERGUSON: I should have made Di Canio a Reds hero

by Alison McConnell

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed his regrets that he never managed to sign former Celtic star Paulo di Canio.

The fiery Italian was signed for the Hoops by Tommy Burns before he moved south to England and Ferguson believes the striker would have been a hero had he went to Old Trafford.

"Di Canio would have been capable of becoming a truly great player at Manchester United," said Ferguson. "I mean, he was a great player.

"But when you have a player like Di Canio, who expresses himself as an individual, like George Best and Eric Cantona did, and Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov do...we make heroes quickly here. Di Canio could have been in that category."

Rocco,

you´ll need to ask DBBIA as its his question.

Andy Cole, Tony Cottee?

Les Ferdinand

The League Cup is the least of our priorities and the team selection for tomorrow night should reflect that, especially as players like O'Dea, Loovens & Caddis need proper game time.

Apart from that, we go to Swinecastle on Sunday and that is always a difficult place to get three points. I would also like to see our strongest possible team (currently available) put out against the Mancs, in the hope of at least re-gaining some pride.

I would even rest THG for the Killie game - imagine if he picked up an injury like last year?! How many points did we drop when he was out?

TTTTplaythereservesCSC

Paul67,
A wee question on the Peat announcement, the cup game tonight, is this competition not the responsibility of the SFA, and if so, will the SFA have to deal with any racist singing in their competition ? rather than waiting for meetings with the SPL and police ?

DBBIA

Do you have a specific amount re your trivia question - How many players played in scotland and won the European Cup / Champions League??

Nick Barmby?

hi

is the game to be televised?

Ulster-Celt

canamlar,

I believe that this competition come sunder the auspices of the
Scottish league

Ulster Celt

I take it you mean our game against the Killie Piemen

Yes the game is live on BBC Scotland at 7.30pm

Canamalar

As far as i am aware, the league cup is actually the responsibility of the Scottish Football League (SFL).

Confused? I am!

We can therefore wait until tomorrow and add them to the group of bodies who make weak announcements and proclaimations without following up with any tangible action following its stipulated rules being broken..............

Ulster-Celt

Right, so have we got a definite list of 3 who've scored for 6 different premiership sides?

Is Ferdinand, Cole and Barmby right?

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend .. Jinkysboy..

I hear your claim, pal.. and I shall forward your Proposal, that Georgie Bhoy, should be put forward as a possible Candidate, for Entrance into Kojo's "Fair Haired Bhoys", Down Town Strutters, and Marching Band...which from now on.. will be referred to as.. Kojo's "Fair Haired Bhoys",only.

Howevahhhhhhhh..

I can tell you right now, palomine ... that your proposal will be turned down by the Board of Directors..

The Reason being.. which is stated clearly in the Preamble of Terms and Conditions ...

Before a Player can be invited...

HE MUST HAVE SHOWN on MANY,Many Previous Outings, that his Playing Performances, had been most DISAPPOINTING and were indeed..very far removed from the High Expectations that we had formed at his Signing.

Na...

Georgie Bhoy, may have had his odd off day.. but, to be poifectly fair,in this judgment..

Georgie Bhoy has not really Disappointed, in any respect..

Sorry Pal..

I just goat the The Low Sign, on yer proposal...

There wull be NAE Membership in Kojo's "Fair Haired Bhoys" Down Town Strutters and Marching Band.. fur Georgie Bhoy( Hey! Wait a minute,bub.. Ah thought ye jist told us, that ye wid only use the shorter Title frum noo oan?...ed)( Ah Did, so a Did.. but.. whadya know?... Ah Lied~)

re: The songs Debate.

As much as I am the optimist guys, as far as football is concerned the opposite is true when it comes to our little rabbly songsters among us. You can bet your houses they will bring us and our club back to earth with bang, after gaining the high ground and it pains me to say so, especially when we go visiting the Hun brothers in arms on Sunday coming. As I've said on many occasions on here before, our house is not completely in order as yet! The powers that be are waiting for us to fall into their trap.

TheLeftWinger

Aye but maybe tonight our not so wise fellow countryman (if you're Scottish that is)will be aware they are heading for trouble and perhaps start a new songs repertoire starting with "when Irish eyes are smiling"..............

Im assuming that you chair the committee and would ask that you reconsider the status of Georgious Samaras

In season 2007 / 2008 Samaras came to celtic on a loan deal from Man City with a pricetag of £6m. In his 4 months at the club he was looked on as 3rd choice striker and mainly warmed the bench coming on late in the game scoring 6 goals for the club

Most fans thought he would be 3rd choiceif signed and would not have valued him at the £6m pricetag and indeed thought that the £1.5m paid my Celtic was nearer the mark.

Until his recent injury Georgious has been our star man and top scorer and at the time of writing, should he quickly recover from his injury and continue this rich vein of form, will end up top scorer and player of the year.

I trust that a fair minded man like your good self wil review the decision based on where Mr Samaras was rated in July to where he is now, and come to the conclusion that despite his long flowing mane of jet black hair - he is indeed a fair haired bhoy.

Great thing about Saturday.... 6/7 home grown players (depending on how you class Gary Caldwell) involved on matchday.

Harry Redknapp goes back to Portsmouth to receive the freedom of the City and when walking up to collect his award is roundly booed by the congregation.

If ever Harry (the mo johnston of managers) falls on hard times he can always sell that brass neck for a few sheckles.

This will be the same Harry that called the Spurs fans morons couple of weeks back when giving Sol abuse, but on Sunday they were a fantastic club. Pass the brown bag with the money in it

Celt for life

If he hadnt made it as a manager (1 trophy in 25 years) he would be appearing in Eastenders and could have been in the running for Pete Beale the cheeky chappy fruit stall owner.

Marty T - Barmby? Sure?

I’ve nothing against quizzes, harmless fun I’m sure, but the content of todays has puzzled me when a glance at our first team pool of players throws up imo far more relevant material……

Why has JP Doumbe disappeared without trace?

Why has Bobo Balde been banished from the first team?

Why did we buy Glenn Loovens when we already have Darren O’Dea?

Why does Paul Caddis not feature more often?

What are we going to do with Mo Donati?

Why does Ben Hutchinson not get his first team chance?

Has John Kennedy got a future at Celtic?

Has Scott Cuthbert got a future at Celtic?

Why did Mark Brown stupidly high five the ICT players when they gubbed us 3-2?

Why has Lee Naylor gone from a potential player of the year to a passenger?

and so on, main difference being of course you wont find answers for these on google.

Marty -

Im pretty sure Bellamy has scored for

NUFC

Liverpool

Blackburn

WHU

Coventry

Norwich - he was at them from 1996 till 2000 but not sure if they were in the Premier then

Naw-am-urny-Bhoy,

great O´Dea to welcome WGS along to the quiz

Paul67

Not sure how scoring froma set piece corrolates to settling in. Loovens is still a squad player who was after all a sub on Saturday

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend... Jinkysboy,

No DICE, pal...

I have made my decision.

I do not believe that you fully understand out codicils and conditions, that must be extant, before a Player can be considered for Nomination.

I have very clearly stated the following main condition..

"A Player must have shown... NO IMPROVEMENT in his Performances, since SIGNING...

A Player Must have turned in several disappointing Displays..

And suddenly.. by dint of hard woik and Perseverence.. the said successful appointee.. had shown Consistent IMPROVEMENT..

None of the Above conditions can in all honesty, be applied to the Performances given by Georgie Bhoy...

In fact..quite the opposite in Application and all round peformance, has been the hall mark of Georgie Bhoy's..Performances..

At the Tail end of Last Season...

The Late, Late, Shows that Georgie Bhoy gave.. were most entertaining.. well woith staying to the final Moment.

Hid Late, scoring achievments, on coming off the bench.. were LEGION~

Frankly, HE must take a large, large chunk or Credit... in the WINNING OF THE LEAGUE, By Us.

Na...

As I said...

Sure, as you say Georgie, has improved immmensely and is now no longer left on the Bench...

Howevahhhhhhh....

He was only left on the bench, in the Foist Place, because he was a Newcomer...and was given time to settle...

To be used as an Impact Player..which he Soitenly Turned out to
be!

Which has paid off..

But.. No Where did I see any complaints.. LAST Season, in Despair, by our fans... denigrating Georgie Bhoy's Performances...

none such ,as we have experienced Previously, regarding the efforts of...

Master Brown, Herr Hinkel or Hinkle..who is up presently for proposal.. or the former efforts turned in by.. Mr. Caldwell or JVOH.. during their earlier, past performances.

If you take a wee bit mair time to woik oot in your mind

Just what is takes to be considered in the foist Place for Membership...

For instance...

Aiden, could nevah evah be considered... Boruc.. nae way...

McManus...sure.. he could..no problem that is however if he... SHOULD HE CONSISTENTLY IMPROVE!

Naylor.. sure.. he could.. no problem.. SHOULD HE CONSISTENTLY IMPROVE...

Naka.. Na.. He could nevah evah be considered for Membership..

Macko..Na... He could Nevah be considered for Membership, either..

Maloney... Sure. .He could.. as I am deeply unsatisfied with Mollys over all performance.. He is NOT showing any Improvement..
in my opinion..which, in this town is the only wan that coonts.
and so on and so on, going through the team...

Hartley.. Na.. he has nevah risen to the heights.. but, he has soitenly nevah disappointed.

Barry... Na.. same as above.

Get it? Got it? Good!

Kojo.
yer pal.. who likes yer style.

Marty

Barmby - Spurs, Boro, Everton, Liverpool , Leeds

Went to Forest in 2003 but they were in the Nationwide then and then Hull City

Naw am Urny

google - Poirot, Miss marple and Columbo couldnt put their collective heads together and come up with many of the answers to those questions

Im not sure WGS added to their brains trust could help them either

Loovins has yet to convince me, he has scored a couple of goals but not sure if we can depend on him to keep it tight at the back.

I thought Hinkel would be a great signing but so far he has done nothing to back this up.

I'm all for giving Paul Caddis a run out but I think a lot of people are in danger of believing Caddis is something he's not, he seems to be going down the route of John Kennedy & Darren O'Dea of being a "great" player when none of us really know if he is.

I remember people claiming that Chris Hay, Mark Burchill & Simon Lynch were all going to be huge stars & where are these guys now?

Naw-am-urny

...or try these starters for 10

How many championships have we won in a row?
When was the last time we won 3-in-a-row? Doh, There's the answer to one!
How many Celtic managers have won three in a row?
Which club is currently top of the SPL?
Which club had the best defensive record in the SPL last season?
Who was the top scorer in the league last season?
Which club in recent years has beaten the following clubs Manchester United, AC Milan and Benfica
Why are some Celtic supporters right miserable despite this being a golden age for our club?

McGrain

Kojo

Your a hard man and Im glad my annual salary raise is not judged by your good self.

As such I expect Georgious to be offered a wages hike come the end of the season due to his performances beyond the expectations laid down in his contract. In fast I would expect this is written into his paperwork and his agent will be knocking on Peter lawells dood come June.

However - as its you and your band of merry men who decide this honour I accept your collective decisions and the rules within it was made.

Im sure Sammi Ras will settle for the SPL trophy, Player of the Year and Golden Boot award as scant consolation..

Keep the faith

Sometimes people get over excited about a potential player, O'Dea and Caddis are the current 'favourites'.

O'Dea sparkled briefly and most brightly in the San Siro however since then he hasn't 'pushed on'. Depending on your perspective that's either because the manager loves McManus or O'Dea hasn't given him enough reason to pick him. From the evidence I've seen on Celtic TV I'm with the manager - O'Dea looks slow and ponderous despite having obvious ability. McManus remains streets ahead of him. Everyone often trots out the 'Kennedy would be captain if it wasn't for injurry' i.e. McManus was behind him. Well the same holds for O'Dea, Cuthbert would have been the chosen one were he not injured back then.

Caddis looks to have talent but I see no future for him at right back, quite simply he is tiny and I'm not sure he has the necessary ability to overcome that. I think his future is in right midfield.

Naw am Urny

Took me a while there but managed to get Strachan, Columbo, Miss Marple and Poirot on a conference call and with the help of Jeeves they have added the following answers iin Brackets to your questions. If these answers are deemed satisfactorly they will enter a team in the CQN quiz nite as Tefal Heids

Why has JP Doumbe disappeared without trace? He has been injured (achilles - 9 mnth recovery and just back recently when he broke down again)

Why has Bobo Balde been banished from the first team? (Doesnt want to leave but Im told spends more time in his lawyers than in training)

Why did we buy Glenn Loovens when we already have Darren O’Dea? (WGS made a statement pre Loovens that it would take a £5m CH to displace GC and SM. Loovens is 24 and on a 4 year deal at £2,5m - One for the future)

Why does Paul Caddis not feature more often? ( WGS thinks he is too small right now for RB and he has Naka, Aiden and Shaun for wide players, Also "protecting him" slightly

What are we going to do with Mo Donati? ( No idea - see Bobo Balde above)

Why does Ben Hutchinson not get his first team chance? (See Doumbe above except he is no almost back to fitness)

Has John Kennedy got a future at Celtic? ( Only time and games will tell)

Has Scott Cuthbert got a future at Celtic? (See john Kennedy)

Why did Mark Brown stupidly high five the ICT players when they gubbed us 3-2? ( Stupid boy - Answers on a postcard - possibly thats why WGS has bought the American Goalie)

Why has Lee Naylor gone from a potential player of the year to a passenger? ( LN was playing above himself 1st season - back to Wolves nationwide form - quote from a Wolves fan)

johnnyquest October 28, 3:15 AM

Why doesn't that surprise me at all!

It looked like he wasn't even bothered about supporting his own player, but rather deflect criticism form TFS.

Name 10 Celtic players who have played for Celtic and who have also played for two other teams that have won the European Cup but not with Celtic. Name the players and the clubs

Now ye wull know why I say this...

Caddis is, as Caddis Does..

He may turn out to be a flop.. but.. he may not..

paul67
agree on both players. scott brown apart, on saturday andreas was our best player and showed
how a full back should operate. celtic want their full backs to bomb forward which always causes
problems at the back (its a celtic thing) hinkel will take time to adapt and on saturday he was up and down the pitch without once getting caught out, the way others have in recent weeks.

if he stays fit he is the best bet we have at full back and 2 million plus could still be the bargain we had hope for.

glenn loovens is a good player who should be given time to settle in at celtic where he will be a success, and has already shown the potential he has to be an automatic choice.

who was Hinkel's direct opponent?

Ulster-Celt

Agree on both Loovens and Hinkel

Its not Hinkels natural game to get up and down the park and he will have to learn when to go and when to stay. Also he has never been fit. I think he will come good

Loovens first game in his best position. In fact first game on his correct side of the park.

Not being a gambler ( my old man made weekly contributions to the local bookies pension) the betting on the football in the States was a puzzle. All this spread betting stuff - win lose or draw is hard enough - for me anyway.

One of my mates in Wisconsin told me that on the American Dollar bill it says " Im God We trust" and he pointed out that the dollar is indeed God there.

My packers are like the Celtic to me - Green White and Gold outfits and a style of play that had Brett Favre throwing passes and never knowing when they were beaten. Cheeseheads are the bhoys.

From yesterday...

I work with, well for, an Iranian. He loves his country and would probably like to return more often than he does but he believes the worst thing that happened to the country was the impeachment of the former president and the insertion of the current one.

We import Persian rugs but in recent years we get rugs from Iran less and less because of the level of corruption. He had one away to get washed and repaired but the corruption is so bad that one was "stolen" yet the police knew where it was... he had to pay the police to release it.

The country has no true leader, in the sense that he has true control, and that is a real problem.

The whole Israeli thing makes matters worse with their treatment of the Palestinians reminiscent (granted a lot worse!) to that of those in Catholic areas in Belfast in the past with water being shut off. The Americans being so much up the ass of Israel just adds to a political powder-keg and the level of influence in American press and politics from Jewish professionals it doesn't look likely to change any time soon...

If the Americans want to target somewhere to combat terrorism it shouldn't be Iraq, Iran or Afghanistan, it should be Pakistan.

Anyway, when did this become a political forum? Mon the hoops!

I actually thoroughly enjoyed the football. The standard was tremendous and I think that is borne out by Pulse8 (who are terrific) early elimination as they romped it last year.

The boys of Sooside Celts were great craic, they were beaten by Il Verdiblancos in the quarters but were apparently "proud to just have reached the last 16 never mind the quarters". There were 12 teams took part. They also suggested that their quarter final was so one sided that by the last 5 minutes they were grateful of the tips dished out by Il Verdiblancos as they humped them! Comments in passing like “Try and hold your run till the pass is on, son” and “You committed too many forward” were all taken on board for next year!

Danny McGrain asked if we did this kind of thing for a living and I think that was the best backhanded compliment ever received.

FC Paddy McCourt’s Beard were also victims of the trophy winners but having ref’d two of their games I must say I thoroughly enjoyed watching their fluent, sometime gallus, style of football, Parka-n-all, while Brattbakk mountain were undoubtedly winner of the uber-cool award with the retro strips and style.

Setting Free the Bears suffered one of these moments that is probably a bit like going to a dinner party and you ask the host if you can help just because it seems the appropriate thing to say, fully expecting to be handed glass and told to sit down. Instead the host says yes please, please cook the main course and serve the 10 guests. Well when he offered to help he had a whistle thrust in his mit and sent out to do the first game on the pitch A! Really, really helped us out though in the melee of late arrivals.

Token Tim your team were tremendous. I think the discipline, including the timed double substitutions played a big part too, not sure how many have commented on that. I read a couple of your suggestions: One to have it on a Celtic away day. Interesting and we’ll definitely think about that to add the social edge to it, maybe hire out a function room for the game? The idea behind the home game was to have it in the locale of Celtic Park and anyone from outside the Glasgow area would have a better opportunity of taking part if they were coming to the game anyway. Funny enough it’s been Hibs both years, both victories, both in terrible weather! Maybe Hibs away next time.

The 11-a-side thing is interesting, a select from Saturday would certainly be worth putting together. However can I tell you how these things usually work? Well, I would mention the idea to Des and then we think of an ‘angle’ to sustain enthusiasm for it, warm clothes for refugees for example, I couldn’t be bothered doing it for the sport to be honest! So anyway Des then says fine, we’ll hire a stadium and invite a world select. Andy laughs and tells him he’s an eejit. However I say something more sensible like hiring (for free by persuasion) a junior ground, or make it end of season and ask Celtic if we can use Lennoxtown. Andy would say he knows a guy who used to drink in the same pub as some ex Celt who reads the blog and he could ask him to put a team together. CQN XI v An entire team of ex-Celt left backs for example. £5 entry all going to Northern Uganda community football projects and 800 CQNers, friends and family turn up, donate a lorry load of warm clothes for the Iraqi winter and get a nosey round Lennoxtown, and we raise £4k for a project in Uganda. An online auction at the same time for a night oot with Des and we’re over the £10k mark. Des suggests Microsoft and Coca Cola sponsor it with a trip for the finalists to NASA to paint the next shuttle in hoops and Andy takes his beer off him. The plan then goes on the back burner because we’ve still the inter-Celtic websites Ryder Cup to do and the CQN fives States-side to launch.

Anyway, as for Saturday a class for a year was the target, a whole school for 6 months was achieved, well done all, and although we weren’t looking for cash the donations top it off fantastically because when you think about it it’s only right we don’t dump all these gifts in kind and expect someone else to foot the logistics costs, even though these are as low for a charity as you’ll find with GtCC.

Summertime next year, I promise, but only if the big sweetie wives promise to go easier on the refs!!

kojo,
no too sure if we should have adopted that tune, I think we prefer tunes with lyrics, can you imagine the Celtic support en masse humming it :oD

Blantyre Kev: "Brattbakk mountain were undoubtedly winner of the uber-cool award with the retro strips and style" -we may be rubbish at fitba, but as long as we look good while getting gubbed i am a happy man.

Excellent news regarding exceeding the target, and it was a pleasure to meet and have banter with all the bhoys there. Everyone that organised and helped out should be very proud.

Big Chris (aka the "animal"!)

Nothing to do with football but do many people on here wear a poppy at this time of the year? I choose not to but it would seem that not a single newsreader chooses in a similar fashion and this is why I ask the question. Also, I somehow associate it with Rangers. Any ideas why I so do? I would appreciate answers/opinions.

FreedomCSC

Hotsmokedsalmon

You'd get few if any Catholics / Nationalists over here who would wear one given it has quite explicit political undertones. ie The poppy represents England and Loyalist. In some ways I feel we have let it be "commandeered" by the Loyalist community but in truth there were thousands of Nationalists and / or Catholics who fought in both WW1 and WW2 and who shuold be remembered.

I used to live in a very loyalist area and a lady came around ours selling the Poppy. My dad chased her!

A few yaers ago one of the NI newsteaders refused to wear one but was forced to change her mind. Yesterday Girls Aloud were interviewed on GMTV all but Nadine Coyle were wearing the poppy. This of course resulted in many phone calls to local radio in complaint. Personally I'd stare at Nadine poppy, or no poppy!!

Lurgan 53

Is she the strange looking ginger one?

Mmmm Nadine Coyle's Poppy!!!

What dreams are made of

Hotsmoked

I tend to wear one because a relative of my mum was killed in WW2 and I had two uncles who fought in WW2 and lost mates. No association at all with Rangers - find that bizarre, sorry. Having said that, not got one this year - am wearing a Breast Cancer ribbon in tribute to an aunt who is dying from it - odd correlation I know, but there ya go. And purely from casual observation, I haven't spotted terribly many this year - ha, newsreaders excepted.

I don't wear a red poppy - but not because of anything to do with football. Originally a US idea it was taken up by the British Legion as a fundraising idea. It is supposed to promote remembrance of British war dead. They used to bear the name of Earl Haig, a commander in the first world war and one of the biggest mass murderers in history.

I believe that in NI red poppies are usually worn by Loyalists because of the connection with Britain - but I'm sure others will know more than me.

If I can get one I wear a white poppy, which are sold by the Peace Pledge Union to mark all who have died in wars regardless of their nationality.

lurgan53

my thoughts are the same as yours.
i think thats why the appeal this year is about the younger generation of soldiers who fought in iraq etc.

still won't wear a poppy; and i don't feel any remorse for walking by and not giving money to some one with them.

only people i give to now are the nuns at marks and sparks.
(i also give to st andrews and sciaf) but no one on the street other than the nuns...

Kojo

You are the Knute Rockne of the CQN. I posted the other night that by watching Notre Dame highlights on a Sunday (Ara Parseghian team) in the early 70s was the way I learnt the American game. Have been a fan ever since. I use to have all the the sweatshirts, t-shirts and stuff, now I just have a battered old Notre Dame cap left. I lost a lot of money on them in the nineties when they became crap after Lou Holtz left, they haven't won a bowl game since Lou left. We need a new Four Horsemen to lead us to glory. My favourite players were Tom Clements, Tim Brown, Joe Montana and Joe Theismann.

Don't forget they were in one of the best movies evah made John Goldfarb, Please Come Home! with Shirely McLaine, Peter Ustinov, Jim Bacus and the delicious Terri Garr, unbelievably written by the authour of the Exorcist, William Peter Blatty!

Blantyre Kev

Despite being included in the refs' award ceremony, I did not feel like a proper ref cos none of the players swore at me.

Well, at least, not to my face.

Well done again to all who worked behind the scenes.

Hss,
always, wear the poppy with pride if only for WW2 it was a just war.
WW1 I honestly feel sorry for all the guys in the trenches, to me it was little short of a cull. "Loins led by donkeys" springs to mind when I think WW1
The problem I think, is that all british soldiers who died in action are lamented, which includes operations involving attempted ethnic cleansing. In all cases they are told its their duty and for most that is enough, simple men are easily misguided so dont condemn all for the sins of a few. Celebrate those who where honourable.

S. Fergus Alexanderson on Jock and the celtic player who scared him brickless,

But surely there is somebody who has put the frighteners up you? “Well, the Celtic defender John McNamee, mainly,” Ferguson says. “I phoned him up to tell him I was mentioning him in Managing My Life [his 1999 autobiography], and he was killing himself laughing. He was a daunting figure.”

McNamee’s footballing philosophy was summed up during a visit by Chelsea to St James’ Park in the late1960s. Minutes into the game, Alan Birchenall, the Chelsea midfield player, embarked on a mazy run from the right flank. McNamee, by then a hero at Newcastle United, ordered his full back to swap places and proceeded to belt Birchenall on to the cinder track.

“And if you come back into this half again, son, you’ll get the full treatment,” McNamee bellowed as he leaned over his poor victim. Birchenall spent the rest of the game operating just in front of Chelsea’s back four.

Years later, McNamee claimed that “football has become softer, not tougher”

Maybe the desire to be the best has given way, in part, to a wish to be loved, but the Glaswegian shipbuilder’s son in him may never admit it publicly. Ferguson grew up in a tenement in Govan and is from the same west Scotland working-class stock as Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Jock Stein. So what is it about that part of the world that produces such great managers?

“I think people in the west of Scotland, grow up in a different climate,” Ferguson says. Culturally? “Literally. It’s wet, damp, unforgiving. Have you ever stood on the harbour front in Fraserburgh [Aberdeenshire] on a February morning? Beautiful! Fraserburgh is cold, but it’s dry.

“When I worked as a toolmaker in the middle of winter,” Ferguson, who was a shop steward at the Remington Rand typewriter factory, adds, “I remember touching the steel first thing in the morning. It’s absolutely freezing. You can burn yourself it’s so bloody cold. And yet these people built the best ships in the world. You can overromanticise these things, but they do have a real part to play in forging a person’s character.”

Giving them what? “Determination. Then you think of the miners; men such as Stein and Shankly. I remember Stein saying something I think was fantastic. We were driving to Glasgow during the miners’ strike [in the mid1980s] and they were shipping coal in from Belgium, these scab drivers. Big Jock stopped them. He looked at them, and said: ‘I hope you’re proud of yourselves. You’re doing people out of a living.’ None of them said a word. Then he said to me: ‘This is an absolute bloody disgrace. You go down that pit shaft, a mile underground. You can’t see a thing. The guy next to you, you don’t know who he is. Yet he is the best friend you will ever have.’ ” Ferguson pauses for a moment. “All of these things congeal in your character. And they never leave you

Earl Haig - 'one of the biggest mass murderers in history'? Blimey I'm not going to defend him, but 'mass murderer'?

Bloke_109,
think trenches, think haigs own soldiers, think "lions led by donkeys" and you'll find mass murderer fits well.

any of you good posters in the states have a radio link for the hun game?

Will Naka leave and if so is Paul Caddis' time about to come?

Should we cash in on Naka, say thanks for the wonderful memories and let young Paul prove his worth?

My answer is yes to all of my questions. I am glad I have reached agreement with myself, but what about the rest of you?

My one concern is the loss of Naka's footballing brains. DO we have any other player with his vision?

blantyretim.
I need more tipsters ,just to stop me having to pick two .
when I got to the boozer after the game and saw hull had won 3-0 away all I could think of was hat the hell were you thinking fergus ,then to find that was the one to bust the coupon ,well, that just put the tin lid on it

I am with you, Naka has been superb but if we can get money for him then let him go.

We have McGeady, Maloney & Caddis able to deputise.

Let's not forget McCourt & Mizuno(wherever he is)

Nope, sorry, he was of course the main donkey in that phrase, and led several hundred thousand soldiers to their deaths - still doesn't count as 'mass murderer' in my view. It practically requires a new phrase but having read a bit about the BEF back in the day, there are other viewpoints on this - I'm not going there, just saying I am, in the context of own men in war scenario, not comfortable with the phrase as used. May be pedantic, I accept - certainly not in the camp of defending him, not at all.

In other news, Joey Barton scores pen for the skunks.

TTTT
aye and that lassy cole is toooooo skinny....

Thanks to all those contributions re Poppy-wearing. I can only assume that I must have picked up on many of those points subliminally. I tended to think the whole thing glorified war and the response to the introduction of the white poppy gave credence to that view. Thanks again.

roberttressell.
I am a big fan of naka ,but if we were to be offered £6-7 million to let him go 6 months before he may go for free , It would be stupid to turn it down .I have been impressed with young caddis when I have seen him in the midfield but I for one will be sad to see our bhoy from Japan go

Bloke_109,

In my view he murdered millions by sending them "over the top" with no chance to survive. The Butcher of the Somme, commander at Ypres, etc. where so many young men gave their lifes for nothing more than a few square feet of mud.

Roberttressel

Tend to agree with you but if it (January transfer) comes to pass, I feel I might change my mind and once again realise just how important his special skills are to us.

This might surprise some people but I always wear a poppy in remembrance of those that fought the Fascists in World War II and to honour those poor working class men that needlessly died in World War I to fulfill their imperialistic masters dreams of glory. I have relatives from my Scottish and Irish side of my family who fought in both wars.

I don't begrudge puting in a couple of quid into the box to honour those that died especially in World War II who fought to defend our rights whether to donate money or not to causes like the poppy or the right to vote. I believe some of the money goes to maintain the graves and monuments to those that fallen in battle and also to help out those old soldiers that survived but are in nursing homes.

Those soldiers that came back from World War II made our world today in the UK, when they came back they demanded from the government that their lives would be better than the returning soldiers of World War I who were betrayed by the ruling class and were welcomed by poverty, illness, hunger and the oncoming Great Depression. When the WWII soldiers came back they kicked out Churchill in the first election after the war and brought in a real Labour government that created social programs like the NHS to try and create a fairer society. I hate to see what our world would be like if they didn't fight fascism in WWII or change the way our country was heading. For that alone I give a couple of quid every year.

I have no problem either with anyone else not wearing a poppy or donating money you have the freedom in this country to choose not too.

I would only be keen to let Naka leave if we were to get good money for him. Money that would be spent immediately strengthening some of our weaker area's.

Roberttressell...I think and hope that Crosas is going to prove to be the missing link as far as vision and class go. Maloney should continue to improve in that regard over the next couple of years also. I hope Caddis gets a game tomorrow. I hope you're right re him. He certainly has the promise.

Hail Hail.

What's the script with west brom's sponsor's or rather lack of?

Do they not have one or is a west ham scenario where the company has went out of business?

Bloke-109
Completely agree with what you say about Haig.
I`ll defend him.
Anyone whose family make the "cratur"can`t be all bad.
Joking apart, how did he differ from Ludendorff or Hindenburg or Joffre or Foch?
He was just a victim of retrospective history writers.
During his lifetime he was highly praised for his conduct of the war.
Then again,he was a winner, and thank god for that.

Regardez le poppy

My old man who did fight in WW2 always told us not to buy one

His rational was that ex soldiers should be looked after by the state in return for their efforts in dending the realm, Its shouldnt be left to charity - they should not be charity cases.

If on one gave to the charity then the government would have to pay "out of their own pockets"

That made sense to me and even though I now know it would be the government paying out via my taxes I still dont buy a poppy

Notre Dame are 5 and 2, so far, with a big, big, game coming up against Pitt..this Sat.. I think... I will be glued to the screen, as usual.

Nov.. spells the upcoming Celtic And G.A. confrontation that naebody in Scotland knows aboot...

The Fighting Irish agin the Blue Nose.. USC.. whom ,I hate with a passion...

To gie ye a little background oan this...

When I woiked and Slaved in Hollywood... I quickly foon oot that we had two very much controlling forces in the Industry...on the wan haun..we hid the Jewish Crowd... who were no too bad, as ye could usually, wheel and deal wit dem..and they liked nathing bettah than a Deal... they wid ayeways deal... a parlor game, which..I, myself.. was no slouch at, eether..so, we goat alang weel..

Howevahhhhhh..the ither group o controllers were, the L.A. Masons..

and every wan seemed tae hiv goan tae USC..it wiz a requirement in L.A.

If ye wanted tae be a force in that toon... ye hid tae hiv a USC.. Varsity Jaiket, in yer wardrobe.

And these Guys... nevah, evah, deal.. it's take it or leave it.. that's da trut'.

So, This lament that ah am Lamenting, may gie ye a li'l insight oan why Notre Dame and USC is... Cel'ic versus the G.A. ... West~

And it is that, take it frae me.

I am gled that you, pal.. are aware of the Fightin Irish, for it seems the Celtic Support in General are in the dark,in that respect..

One o' ma Buddies, who has connections at South Bend..told me...ah think it wiz 3 years ago..dinna hold me to that,though..any...way.....

Notre Dame, who also have a successful SOCCCER COLLEGE TEAM.. were Touring in Europe,at that time... they decided ith would be nice to link up with Glasgow Celtic..for a friendly game, with some of oor Youth Teams... They visited Celtic Park and were treated well... but, nae game could be set up...

However, Aberdeen, did oblige...so they played their youth team instead..

I was amazed at the Ineptitude of Celtic's Public Relations Dept..in allowing that chance to drift.

Here was a Golden Opportunity for Celtic ,to Link up with an Extremely influential Catholic College.. one which had many, many former Students.. IN VERY..and I mean .. VERY ,VERY HIGH PLACES, in Industry and in Govermental Circles, In the Law...it goes on and on..

Whit an opportunity, squandered~

I believe,at that time Celtic were not fully committed to casting a world wide shadow, as they are now,of course... but, all the same..
Wow~

Nice chatting Pal..

Kojo,

Jinksy,
I,too, have argued that `charities` should be things like the pub dart team or some kids` football team equipment. The more important, much more important issues ARE the responsibility of the Government. However, I support days like the Golf Day and agreed with the recent 5`s but see these as a reflection of the decency of the Organisers rather than as really changing the deprivations of the world. I hate USC too, I even support UCLA Bruins against them. I can't believe that Celtic missed an opportunity like that to cement a bond with ND. Love when ND play USC, Ohio State, Purdue and Michigan, I must admit I do like Michigan St Spartans colours though. Every once in awhile ND play in Green and Gold, usually in a big game, when was the last time?

Greetings all fellow Celts.

I'm a long-time reader, but have only just registered to comment now.

First of all can I just say to Paul67 a massive thank you for setting up and running a wonderful Celtic site. It is the only one I choose to spend my time on, as it rises above all normal web chat and makes me proud to be a Celtic fan.

My first game was the 5-0 winning of the league at Love Street in 1986 and I've had a season ticket ever since the 1986-87 season.

Anyway, congratulations to all those who have helped CQN raise money for charity this year. I look forward to helping out myself in the future.

Yours, in Celtic.

I give to charities of my choice.

I also make a judgement on who should be paying for the needy cause and if I think I should then I do.

I have always said (probably get shot down for this ironically)that I would never go to war. The only occasions it could have come up in my lifetime have been Falklands, Ireland and the 2 Iraq conflicts ( Note I havent said wars) I suppose if I thought the cause was right I might have shouldered arms - but probably not as I really dont believe in war anyway.

BUT surely if someone fights for their country and as a result lose limbs or other injuries physical or mental then the country that they fought for should ensure their future.

Hail Hail

To wear a poppy or not? I have followed my auld Dad in this. He served in WW11 and has never worn one. He lost good mates too. I think he feels it somehow glorifies what has nothing to glorify: pain, suffering and death. For similiar reasons, he never joined the British Legion.

I would encourage anyone who can to buy a white poppy for the reasons already given or pay a visit to a War Cemetery on the Continent where they are invariably beautifully maintained as a mark of respect to all those who paid the supremem sacrifice. Those of you who are young will probably be astonished to discover that the average age of the fallen is about 19 or 20.

It doesn't say any less of any man to wear a poppy.

Jinkysboy - thank you kindly.

I've been logging on daily for well over 6 months, so please forgive my sheer laziness in taking so long to register - if only I'd known it would actually only take sixty seconds!

I appreciate the compliment of the name. Peter epitomised everything good about Celtic for me, and was also an absolute gentleman to boot. How I love to reminisce about a midfield two of Peter and The Maestro - probably my two favourite Hooped heroes along with the late Tommy Burns. Although I may be a bit biased seeing as I was lucky enough to get to know all three personally.

Best of luck in getting Ladbrokes to pay for the season book. I'm not really a gambler myself, but I love advising my cousin on who he should and shouldn't be picking in his MANY coupons! Ha Ha!

I quite fancy Lambo's Colchester to win away at Southend this weekend for what it's worth. Best of luck!

Legend that is Peter Grant

I met Peter in a night club in Paisley with Paul McGuigan, Rambo (who had to go home and feed his dugs), and a wee guy you mentioned at #67 in your list

We went to a party and had a great laugh with them (including the wee tim at 67)

A wee while later I took my son to CP on his 13th birthday and bought him a ball - as we stood outside to get the players to sign it - Granty came out and said hello to us and took us back inside where we met all the players and git the ball signed as well as getting lots of photos with the Ec etc.

The guy was - as you say - a gent

I for one would think he should have a place on our staff.

From BBC Website -
Rangers supporters who sing the 'Famine song' during the Co-operative Insurance Cup quarter-final against Hamilton run the risk of being arrested.

BBC Scotland has learned that Strathclyde Police warned the club before Tuesday's cup tie at Ibrox.

Wonder if there's been any arrests so far.

I agree wholeheartedly. Granty's reputation as a first team coach, and assistant manager, is very good in England and I honestly believe he is exactly the type of person who should be on the Celtic staff on a permanent basis. I haven't yet quite given up hope of him being manager one day though... ;)

And sadly, I have many childhood memories of being in Peter's company along with #67 on my list - and as one who saw #67's love of Celtic up front, it made what he did all the harder to take. I swear my Auld Man's heart hardened a little that day and has never quite been the same. Betrayed.

To promote peace is a worthy cause, that if it is used for that, I preferred to give my money to charities that I know a little bit about so I will keep buying a red poppy aslong as some of the money goes to the up-keep of the war memorials and graves. Someone said earlier that the Government should look after the WWII veterans that they should not depend on charity and I agree with that poster %100, governments should look after their veterans, their dead and their memorials, they should not depend on charity to help them but the sad reality is that our government doesn't do that, that our veterans have to go out and solicitate donations to look after those that fought fascism, this government don't even look after the wounded from Afghanistan and their illegal war in Iraq properly, they and previous government closed down the military hospitals. So our government are neglecting the vetrans of WWII, by buying a White Poppy or not donating any money to the red poppy appeal are we not as guilty of neglect like our government to those that fought fascism and shape our world.

Like I postered earlier it is a free country you can choose how you like to spend your money as your like.

I hate to be a poster that replies and runs but that is what I got to do.

I was in denial that day

I picked a guy up outside Castle Greyskull at 7.15am that morning and he showed me the paper with Judas and the beast.

Jinkysboy,

Yes indeed. It was truly as if ANYone could do it after that. Still defies belief when I am forced to think about it. I always felt Big Roy should have decked him at the next Scotland get-together.

And yes, I did notive the irony that he was #67, but I didn't know what else to do. From here on he will, of course, be referred to as #666.

Pope equalises for Crewe

That's what you call succession planning Peter. We've now got it sorted for the tic's next 2 managers and boro`s as well.!! Maybe a few years after that Lambo will have done his apprenticeship and he'll bring in Lubo as his no. 2! :-)

And yes, your memory serves you very well, Peter did indeed come on as a sub. I always believed it was because Davie Hay was worried about a St. Mirren comeback... ;)

From the Scotsman

MSPs football match abandoned

A football match involving a team of MSPs was called off after tempers boiled over, it has been confirmed.
The match at Lesser Hampden in Glasgow on Sunday was stopped after about 55 minutes amid a number of contentious challenges between the politicians and the team of sports journalists they were facing.

Labour's Ken Macintosh, one of the organisers of the MSPs' side, said both teams accepted the decision to call proceedings to a halt.

"Normally it's our football that embarrasses, not our behaviour," he said.

"But in this case, it wasn't a terrific display. We're looking for a chance to redeem ourselves and show that we play football in the right spirit in the near future."

One of the flashpoints in the match saw broadcaster Chick Young injured in a tackle involving Mid Scotland and Fife MSP John Park. "That was part of what got the game overheated," Mr Macintosh said.

The MSPs' side, which also included Labour's Andy Kerr and Frank McAveety and the SNP's Jamie Hepburn, was leading 6-2 when the match was abandoned.

It is understood this came about after players from both sides squared up and started pushing each other in the chest.

The journalists' team also included Radio Clyde commentator Peter Martin.

Last season, I also had a coupon bust by Crewe scoring. The scorer was Daniel O'Donnell.

jinkysboy

cheers.....

yeseeessssssssss got your name

Im almost tempted to give the phone in a call and ask Peter Martin for his take on this disgraceful behaviour.

Not Mr Youngs first offence mind.

jinkysboy

don't think about phoning into them.

Blantyretim

They vet you first and would probably not let me ask that question anyway.

Be more fun if WG worked the incident into TGITW

Jinkysboy - How serious is Chick's condition?

Hopefully not as bad as his last injury. According to reports he suffered concussion when someone kicked Walter Smith's backside.

jinkysboy

i have info that that wee sheckter keevins is going to a celtic
Q & A night next friday, i will get the details and hopefully i will be able to attend and give him a piece of my small mind..:))

any little helps for him with no brain

Crewe needed that point though they are still at the foot of Div. 1.

They are my English team as I refuse to support a big team cos I still see all of them as our rivals.

Tom Pope at 6 foot 3 might be an interesting signing but Crewe don't have any stars at present. Over the recent years they have sold Dele Adebola, Dean Ashton, Rob Hulse, Luke Varney, Nicky Maynard, Madjid Bougherra and Michael Higdon. They produced international players like Neil Lennon, Robbie Savage,David Platt, Rob Jones, Danny Murphy, Geoff Thomas, Bruce Grobelaar and Seth Johnson.

The Pope scorin reminds me of a story of a Chelsea : Rangers match when Pat Nevin was roundly booed as he was being substituted off. The boos got louder as the tannoy announcer said Nevin is being replaced by.... Priest.

Cue increase in booing.

Ha ha

he has six stud marks on his leg . Im sure if he has walking problems someone at Castle Greyskull will be able to assist him.

Heres another piece on it from the Telegraph

The game started with players exchanging aggressive banter, but the flashpoint came after 40 minutes when Labour's John Park and BBC commentator Chick Young both went for the ball.

Mr Park's tackle was mistimed and Mr Young had to be stretchered off. He labelled the MSP team an "absolute disgrace" and claimed he had been left with six stud marks in his leg.

The MSP was ordered from the pitch by the referee and replaced, but relations between the two sides got worse in the second half when at least one punch was thrown.

Players from both teams squared up to each other, pushing their opponents in the chest. The referee decided he had seen enough and abandoned the match after about 55 minutes with the score 6-2 to the politicians.

Mr Young said: "They were an absolute disgrace. It was really quite scandalous. John Park did me and I had to be carried off. I'm still limping with six stud marks in my leg.

"I've been playing friendly football matches for 20 years with Dukla Pumpherston and I've never come up against such aggression. The ref had no choice but to abandon the game."

The annual match between sports writers and politicians was sponsored by the Bank of Scotland and held on Sunday morning at Lesser Hampden, the Scottish national stadium's training pitch.

The politicians' team also included Labour MSPs Frank McAveety, Ken McIntosh, Andy Kerr and the SNP's Jamie Hepburn. The rest of the team was made up by Scottish Parliament researchers and local councillors.

The sports pundit team was led by Mr Young and Peter Martin, a Radio Clyde commentator, and included some of the country's best known sports writers.

It is understood that the fixture could be scrapped after Sunday's brawl, but Mr Park last night insisted the incident had been blown out of all proportion.

The Mid Scotland and Fife MSP said: "There was a misplaced pass to me - it was a bit wet, the ball bounced. I tackled him and he hurt himself.

"I went round the pitch to see him and he was OK. I apologised. I had been trying to calm things down and the tackle did not help the mood of the game but I was not trying to do him.

"It was a mistimed tackle and I went off. These things happen on every football pitch in Scotland every week."

Another MSP team member, who did not want to be named, also defended his team-mates, claiming that from the start of the match the pundits were "taking things too seriously."

He added: "In the second half things went from bad to worse.

"None of the MSPs did anything that bad, but it got very bad tempered and after a third hard challenge there was a brawl and a few punches were thrown."

"The ref abandoned it. He said he'd never seen anything like it. He refs a lot of kids' games and said under-10s behave better on a Sunday morning."

Blantyrekev 6.34

Good to read your take on events from Saturday. It was good to meet you and we all thought you did a great job as a ref, as well as keeping the organisational side of things sweet.

Speaking of sweet, I don't know if the phrase Big Sweetie Wife sits well on my shoulders but thats ok. However, a wee bit disappointed to not see the teams name given a mention for making the semi's whilst knocking out the champs from last year, but I suppose thats the price I pay for giving too much verbal to the ref(s)!!!!

Glad to see that my suggestion of an 11's team has sown a few seeds. If I am lucky enough to play then you have my word that I shall remain on the pitch and out of the ref's book (the red bit, at least) for the full 90 minutes. I am serious when I say that I've never been sent off in 20 years of football up to amateur level, no' bad for a Bhoy from the Halfway!!!

Thanks again for your time, and to all the others who also made the day what it was, a great success.

Celtic skipper McManus battling to make Bhoys crunch clash with Man United....

Celtic are sweating on the fitness of skipper Stephen McManus ahead of a crunch double-header against Hearts and Manchester United.
The Hoops captain is expected to sit out tonight's Co-operative Insurance Cup quarter-final with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park after suffering a hamstring problem in last weekend's win over Hibs.
And he remains a doubt for the SPL clash at Hearts on Sunday, followed by the visit of Sir Alex Ferguson's superstars for the Champions League encounter next Wednesday.

Glenn Loovens is liable to deputise for McManus in Ayrshire on Wednesday night after coming off the bench at the weekend.
The brighter news for Gordon Strachan is that injured strikers Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Georgios Samaras could recover in time for the crucial trip to Denmark to face Aalborg on November 25.
'Big Mick has that hamstring problem, so we have to look at him. But Jan has now started doing a wee bit of work again and he could be back in three weeks,' said Strachan.

Meanwhile, the Celtic manager has revealed that all 12 SPL bosses agreed at a recent summit that the Under-21 rule should be scrapped.
Clubs are forced to list three kids in their matchday squad under league rules but, as is often the case at the Old Firm, they pick up bonuses without playing, while senior players are left out altogether.
Strachan says he can't loan out Paul Caddis and Darren O'Dea simply because he has to meet the requirement of the rule.
'It would be a smashing idea for us to let Caddis go on loan to the likes of Gary McAllister at Leeds, or other friends in England. But we can't let him go as we need to have Under-21s on the bench,' said the Celtic boss.
Strachan will be hoping forwards Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Georgios Samaras will be back to face Aalborg
'It was mentioned recently by all the coaches at Gleneagles - we mention it every year.
'We'd all like to scrap the Under-21 rule - if you need them, or they are good enough, then you can still play them.
'We have guys who could be out learning their trade, but can't.
'You think back to the likes of David Beckham, who learned going out from Manchester United to Preston on loan. A lot of guys have done that.
'Unfortunately, we have to keep them and they don't get a game, even though they are on the bench.'

Hinkel one of the new breed of footballers....

Andreas Hinkel is a mystery. He joined Celtic from Sevilla as a lapsed German internationalist and has regained his status despite a stuttering start to his new career in Scotland.

Yesterday, he spoke calmly and diplomatically of his role as the second pick in Gordon Strachan's right-back rota system with Mark Wilson. It left the impression that Hinkel may actually be too placid for the unforgiving environs he was enchanted by despite the efforts of Borussia Dortmund and VfB Wolfsburg to bring him home from his Spanish experience.

Hinkel is one of a new breed of football cosmopolitans. He spoke as warmly of the "cultural experience" and "history" of Glasgow as he did the winning traditions of his employers. It is impossible not to warm to this affable character. A sizeable and audible chunk of the Celtic fans, though, remain unconvinced by his contribution since joining the club last January. Hinkel listened intently to a series of polite questions aimed at his sporadic appearances and occasional spurts of form and responded with clarity and courtesy.

"Every player wants to play regularly, but sometimes, at such a big club, you need to rotate because of the number of games in the league and the cup," he said. "The manager explained this to me at the beginning of the season.

"It is too much to ask one player to play in every game. That is why successful teams have a squad of 22 or 24 players. It is the manager's decision who plays when. It is something you just have to handle if you are a good professional."

Being a "good professional" has become a Strachan mantra in his 3 years at Celtic.

The manager sent his players off on the recent international break with individual reminders of their responsibilities and job descriptions. Hinkel was encouraged to live up to his handsome reputation, but Strachan dismissed the suspicion that the German might be too good-natured and level-headed to thrive amid the chaos of Old Firm life.

"He has been stop-start with injuries," said the manager in mitigation.

"I think when he came into the frantic Scottish league he was thrown in and thought what happened there'? He is a smashing player with a good attitude.

"He is level-headed, but sometimes it is nice to stay focused when you are at a club like this. It does not help if you have emotional defenders. It's nice to stay above the madness that goes on in this country."

None the less, Hinkel's pedigree has been unable to guarantee him a place ahead of the more dependable and defensively diligent Wilson in the Champions League. His surprise return to the international arena has given him extra motivation to establish himself and enabled him to assess the full extent of his latest challenge.

"You know you have to adapt from Spanish football to Scottish football," he said, "but when I went back to play for Germany after 2 years, I had to compare again.

"I have had some injuries, but it can be a mental thing as well as a physical one."

Hinkel was criticised by Michael Zorc, Dortmund's director of football, for spurning a return to the Bundesliga in favour of a more lucrative contract at Celtic. The full-back has no regrets and believes his experience of Scottish football has been rewarded beyond monetary terms.

"When I went to Spain, I had so many good experiences that I wanted to continue playing in a foreign country," he said. "I wanted a new football experience, of course, but also a new cultural experience: I want to know about the history of my new city. I have learned many things already.

"Also, I left Germany as a non-international player after missing out in the squad for the World Cup in 2006.

I have since become a national player again, so that has been an important development."

Exactly.
That`s why I feel reluctant to pass judgement on the decisions made at every level at Celtic Park.
I ain`t in the loop.
Feel very confident that our club is extremely well run and am thoroughly LUVVIN our continuing ,if perhaps too gradual for some, improvement.
Not too bothered if we don`t progress in the C.L.,but I would love to give Manchu{Fu?} a smacking next week.
Don`t think it`s beyond the bounds of possibility.
Wishful thinking? Maybe.

To all the CQN'rs whom I met at BBs before the Aberdeen game thank you for a most hospitable entre (Old TiM, special thanks for the Haggis and Neeps) before the main feast re late revival against the sheep. I have just recovered from jet lag hence the late thank you. Unfortunately, I was unable, due to family commitments in Morayshire, to re-visit BBs but now I know what a great pre-game environment its is, I will make sure to visit next time I am home.

The Celtic family, especially CQN members, is surely the most welcome home coming for we Celtic Expats

had to nip away yesterday but thanks very much for having an excellent attempt at asking those questions......

dont know if this has been posted.....

not that I'm anti English or anything like that, just thought it a good joke.....

A Sweet Wee Scottish Tale.

A man is cupping his hand to scoop water from a Highland stream .
A Gamekeeper shouts,

'Dinnae drink thon waatter! It's foo ae coo's keech an' pish!'
The man replies,

'My Good fellow, I'm English. Could you repeat that in English for me.'

The keeper replies,

'I said, use two hands - you spill less that way

Morning all,

Jinkysboy, You've got me mate, I'm not feart o the high heed yin at work.......but jockspice now that's another matter lol

She's away to Portugal in the morning for a weeks hol wea son no.1 and a Derry family so the party's in ma hoose, I'll be able to watch any telly I want......unless she takes the remote with her mmmmmmmm she widnae dae that surely.

vmhan aw

Naw am urny

Glad to be of assistance with the questions

On a serious note - WGS is a puzzle and I dont agree with a lot of his decisions - but I didnt agree with MONs or Mcneills or Barnes either. Who does.

All we can do is support him through thick and thin and if he wins 4 in arow then its been worthwhile.

Vmhanaw

She wouldnae would she ????

Its ok - you can get one of these programmable ones for a tenner (voice of experience)

How was the run this morning - its getting colder by the day here

January should be interesting. Strachan v Lawwell. WGS will want Naka because his magic could win us the league. Speedy Pete will reckon we'd be better off with £6m or so. Last time MO'N won with keeping on Bobo . We lost the league and are still paying dearly for it. Whose your money on?Poppies - WW1 and I think Blackadder summed it up perfectly. Yes more Irish Catholics lost their lives than Irish Prots fighting for King and Country. On a lighter note, the Primary school curriculum had WW2 as a topic and naturally it was slanted from allies side. I know a teacher who was teaching her class about the war. Problem was she was of Italian parents and had a German granny. Loser, loser !

Normally I'm not one to tempt fate, but on this occasion I'm sticking my neck out.
If we do end up in the EUFA cup, we would truely be in line for an unprecedented quadruple, winnig all tournements with a 4 in a row, would be unprecedented, would it not?
Maybe although a bit early we should naming this season the unprecedented season, if only to annoy the hacks :oD

I see the Chick Young article is now in the daily Ranger today

A "FRIENDLY" match between MSPs and football writers turned into a mass brawl and had to be abandoned.

Labour MSP John Park was sent off for a wild tackle on BBC pundit Chick Young, who complained: "He had a go at breaking my leg."

Scotland's former sports minister, Frank McAveety, was accused of swearing at the referee and "making threatening remarks".

And Glasgow councillor George Redmond ran the length of the pitch to shove an opponent, sparking clashes involving half a dozen players.

A pushing match broke out and the referee called a halt to the game.

A member of the politicians' team said: "The referee does a lot of kids' games and said the under-10s behave better. It was cringe worthy. It was embarrassing."

The teams kicked off on Sunday morning at Lesser Hampden, just yards from the National Stadium.

The game was abandoned after 55 minutes with the politicians 6-2 up.

The politicians' player said there was "bad blood from the off".

He added: "The sports hacks were whingeing from start to finish.

"Ten minutes before half-time, Chick was clattered by John Park. He was writhing in agony and got carried off.

"The ref sent John off, although he let us bring on a sub as it was a friendly. But three or four sports guys took exception and there was a bit of handbags at 20 paces.

"John went to apologise after the match but Chick told him to f***off."

Chick said: "John Park did me. I've got six stud marks down my leg. I'm still limping.

"Their behaviour was a scandal. They were thugs. They had one guy at the back who was a nutcase of the first order and Frank McAveety's language to the ref was absolutely scandalous."

Record Sport's Gordon Parks, who played for the writers, said: "Even before a ball was kicked, it was clear certain members of the MSPs' team were intent on causing trouble.

"George Redmond and Frank McAveety made threatening remarks. Some of them were trying to provoke a reaction with tackles which could have caused serious harm."

Park, a list MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife, said: "There was a misplaced pass to me. It was a bit wet, the ball bounced, I tackled Chick and he hurt himself.

"I apologised. I was not trying to do him.

"The ball was there. These things happen on every football pitch in Scotland every week."

McAveety, who is still a Labour sport spokesm an, said: "I certainly did not make threatening remarks to anyone during the match.

"I was moral rectitude. I was just a happy-go-lucky centre-back. Both sides gave as good as they got."

McAveety said it was "disappointing" the match ended as it did. But he added: "Perhaps these complaints have something to do with the fact the parliamentarians were winning and some players went in a huff."

Redmond said it was "a load of nonsense" to suggest that he said anything threatening.

Labour finance spokesman Andy Kerr and the SNP's Jamie Hepburn also took part in the game.

Another player, Labour MSP Ken Macintosh, said: "Normally it's our football that embarrasses, not our behaviour, but in this case it wasn't a terrific display.

"We're looking for a chance to redeem ourselves and show that we play foot ball in the right spirit in the near future."

Vmhan aw, I left a comment for you @ 14:32 on this thread !

Now normally. being down here in engerlandshire is pretty good. No huns, no biased Scottish meedja etc, but it also has it's downfalls. I had to send Barrs an e-mail to find out where I could buy the elixir of life in Grimsby and they dually supplied three purveyors !!! I also can't get to any mid-week games and it's a long haul for the w/end games also.

But my problem now is, as I understand it, tonight's game is on BBC Scotland , yes ? And if it is, I have no idea if the Cleethorpes No.1 CSC will be showing it. The girls behind the bar had to call someone in to get the ICT game set up as no-one knew how to do it without loosing the Chelsea game and they obviously weren’t going to do that now were they !!!??? So the chances of them finding BBC Scotland on Sky are next to nill.

So the question is, my digs has some sort of cable TV service. I have no idea which kind, but it's got a wee blue box and this also supplies the crappy wireless network that is the bain of my life. Can I find BBC Scotland on this thing ? The nutter that always has it tuned to G.O.L.D. will just have to do without for a change and if he tries to change it, there may be trouble ahead (he's got "previous")

pablophanque

Ps, Aussie Tim, it was good to meet you also.

TNT,

My apologies for not getting back to you. I can only "dip" into CQN at odd moments and it takes me all my time to read the posts. I have only just read your reply.

Personally, I feel that looking after those who have been members of the Armed Forces HAS to be the responsibility of the Government. I respect totally your reasons for buying and wearing the red poppy. I'm sure you're right. For me, I would want to honour all those who have suffered through war, that necessarily includes many civilians. For that reason and as a mild protest against the very idea of war, I prefer the white poppy.

Jinksybhoy,

I think it was you who was watching that programme on ITV last night about the Troubles. What did you think of it? I deliberately didn't watch it for 2 reasons. Firstly, it was ITV and for years I have had no respect for their investigative reporting. They stopped putting resources into that department a long time ago. It used to be excellent. Secondly, the Observer said this on Sunday about it: Religion doesn't get a look-in. Because of that, it reckons it is an excellent programme. That reminded me of the action taken by that paper during those "Troubles" when their reporter too openly (in their opinion) told the truth that the Nationalist/Catholic community were the ones who were treated as 2nd class citizens. They sacked her. It didn't suit their purely secularist agenda.

parkheadcumSalford

I didnt take it as a serious investigative program and they stressed at the start they were not going into rights and wrongs.

It was the experiences of Eamonn Holmes, Patrick keilty, Barry McGuigan, Gloria Hunniford, Charlie Lawson, James Nesbit, and some posh woman.

Holmes was the interviewer too and sat on the fence (as they had said at the start) No deep searcing questions were asked but I wasnt expecting them.

The best bit was Charlie Lawson - when EH was talking to him about how they would never had a chance to meet as kids because of the segregation - Lawson said "And I wouldnt have wanted to mix with you" Also he admitted never to have been in a catholic area so they took him down the Falls and Springfield Rds. he was so uncomtortable even in the back of a cab and said he didnt want to be there. You could see it written all over his face. he said "Can we go back now for a pint - in a rangers supporters club"

The ultimate though was as he recalled when he was at drama school in the UK and the troubles reached the streets of the mainland with the bombings. he told how the anti irish feelings hit him and said some posh english guy said to him that they should tow NI out into the ocean and leave it there and " WHY DONT YOU JUST GO HOME" he was absolutely livid at that. Worth watching for that one moment alone.

Conversely it was revealed that patrick Keilty's father was murdered by the protestant para militaries and he said he was not comfortable speaking about it as he never had. very sad to hear him try to explain that his dad was a man who empolyed both sides and a great man of the community - even the plod said the day he was buried that he was a totally innocent victim and that it was unusual for them to make statements like that.

Thought this was interesting. sorry if you've already seen it.

It's about Paul le Guens renewed success at PSG. says a little about the rangers 'culture'. long may it continue. I so hope he wins the league this season!

Can anyone help

When does the next season ticket installment come out and for how much?

roberttressell

There's an interesting comment at the end of that piece, about not jumping the gun on PSG under Le Guen being winners.

I don't know enough about French football to pass comment on their chances, but given that Spiers wrote a book about Le Guen's time at Ibrox (which is still on sale I believe) adn only two weeks ago said on Radio Scotland that Murray had a cabal of journalists that he dripfed, a cabal Spiers is not part of, I think the thrust of his article is designed to have pop at the Rears and Murray. Good stuff

I see that some of you have been rather disparaging about me in posts last night. Let me tell you; it is not easy to be the most loathsome, evil, objectionable, wicked, despicable, uncaring, hate-filled spawn of Satan in the history of Europe given the stiff competition, and my second place on the "podium" should be commended rather than disparaged. Given the greater opportunities afforded 70 or so years ago to the winner, I regard myself as having secured a moral victory.

If that Central and Eastern European opportunity had fallen to me, you can be sure that I would have given new impetus and meaning to the phrase “unbridled evil”. Instead all I got was the chance to rape the industrial heartland of your ungrateful country and pay overtime to Surrey policeman to travel to northern grime land for a bout of government sponsored violence. Bathgate, Linwood, Greenock!! Hardly the best material to work with but how I rose to the challenge! You Scots and Irish, with your short memories, have simply forgotten my greatness. You’re not fit to be made into pills and soap.

No doubt, Paul 67 will now post a new article in an attempt to censor me but, beware, this lady is steadfast and is not for turning (stomachs excepted).

Finally, where were you all on Monday for your little 5 a side tournament? I have total recall so I know I got the time and place right. The only other person to turn up was Nigel Mansell and he was late!

Roberttressel

The final paragraph is the clincher

Le Guen's mantra was always this: "Nothing matters except the team. No one player matters more than the collective." He is thriving again, but in Paris, not in Glasgow.

Margaret

Coventry is about 300 miles south of Glasgow

Look for the signposts

Pablophanque, I am sure I'm telling you something you already know... the game can be got on Sky channel 971. If you can't get access, you could always listen to Badfinger's greatest hits0-)!Re our discussion on Saturday about sad songs, the extract below is much sadder than any song could ever be, no matter what... it was

"On 24 April 1975, Ham hanged himself in his garage studio in Surrey. His suicide note, addressed to his girlfriend and her son, seemed to blame Polley for much of his internal despair and he cited his lost ability to cope with his disappointments in life. The note read: "Anne, I love you. Blair, I love you. I will not be allowed to love and trust everybody. This is better. Pete. P.S. Stan Polley is a soulless b*****d. I will take him with me." Ham had shown a growing mental illness over the past months as he burned cigarettes out on his hands and arms. Ham's daughter Petera was born a month after his death."

Pablo checking back now.

You are tim alright with that level of paranoia! Your exploit with the ref was well handled by the pro in the middle, no problem. My remark was light hearted, honestly, and not you specific. There were a few hissy fits thrown and the amateur refs weren't ready for it but it was all because the standard of competition was good and that has to be welcomed, absolutely no harm done (I hope)

You'll get your mention by the way, that's still to come!

Anyway, I ref'd one of your games and you gave me a hard time for NOT giving the opposition a penalty, do you remember? Very funny incident. The other team claimed, I didn't give it and you still asked who was reffing the game!!! Still makes me laugh.

So anyway, rest assured yer card's marked for next year big guy!

Irrespective of his success in Paris, Paul Leguen was a disaster as Rangers manager. He got everything, from his first day to his last day, wrong in spectacular fashion.

I loved every single minute of it :-)

last?

an imodium podium!

tbdJ

My team for tonight

M. Brown
Caddis Loovens O'Dea Naylor
Koki Donati Hartley McCourt
Hutchinson Franny (of Il Verdiblancos)

Robson, McGeady and Shaun available from the bench to turn it.

If you win, great, and I think they could, if you don't it will still have been 90 competitive minutes for these guys in the bigger picture.

BlantryeKev

Agree on the principal but half the team played on MOnday in Inverness and with the travel back down yesterday I dont see them getting a game.

maybes a CQN select team would suffice

If Paul Le Guen was still manager of Rangers today i'm not so sure we'd have won 3 in a row and be sitting pretty for 4. Only my opinion but i was one of the fans that Mr lawwell could have 'smelled the fear' from when they appointed him.

I was absolutely delighted the day he was sacked, that step took them back years!

Chico5

Im in your camp - it was a double whammy for me - they lost the best young manager on the continent who if they gave him time could have brought them a bright future - and brought back the cardigan so it was to be same ole same ole.

Yo Pablo.....

It must have looked a bit dodgy though to passers by
as he was handing me a wee bundle o stuff in a dodgy bag, and we were haggling over the money......folk huv been lifted for less lol

Also, I was listening to the rearrangers game on BBC Scotland last night, I'll send you the link when (if) I get hame mate.

chico5 / jinkysbhoy

I was worried when they appointed him but by the end of August was absolutely convinced we were league champions. He may be a good manager in France but he was a dud here. His recruitment policy was seriously flawed and he was clueless tactically - against Celtic at Celtic Park, Sionko played in 4 positions in 25 minutes!

Irrespective of the later problems concering lifestyle etc, they guy was getting everything wrong and had to go. No different from Barnes 10 years previous really!

Thismancraig

Im just glad he went and they brought back the cardigan

BlantyreKev

Whilst your teams experimental side is pretty ambitious - I definitly think tonight players like Caddis, Mizuno, and Hutchison who have shown promise in the reserves to get a run out. Sadly I cant see O'Dea starting as looks like with our three centre halves vying for a starting berth, his position as a token homegrown player on bench wont keep Caldwell and Loovens out of a McManusless team. Really thought O'Dea had something that the rest of our centre halves didn’t - no longer think we will find out until he moves to another club.

Like to see a beardless McCourt make another subsititute appearance to keep up his cult status amoung the fans…..

Full strength team tonight, Kilmarnock have had a decent season so far.

I want the treble and them back in the doldrums.

Pablo,

I found BBC Scotland at channel 971 on Sky while I was on holiday in Spain last week, hope this helps.

And thanks for our inclusion in your spot on review of Saturdays fives.

Had we won it our tag line would have been "We did it by wearing fur, and beautiful inventive football"

If only eh......

I spoke with a friend recently who lives in Perth we were at Uni together. He was elected President of the students union and took a year out. This was the early eighties and during that time I met many other representatives of student unions across the country through him. I hadn´t spoken to him for a few years and while we were catching up on the phone he told me that those reps that we used to meet are "now running the country and I´m not kidding and you can tell"

Having read the account of the pundits versus politicians friendly game I think he might have a point. I was also amazed at the Brand, Johnathon Ross story and even more so that Camerons beef was with the BBC for allowing this pre recorded show to go out.

And to think some people are more concerned about Gordon Strachan!

Anybody know how young McCarthy was treated at the bigot dome last night ?

Cadizzy

Did you know she stays in Scotland now?

henriks sombrero

just interviewed one of them who was at the match, forgot to ask him, im sure he would have answered honestly.... :))))

Henriks Sombrero - just talking to a mate who was at the game last night and young Mr McCarthy was again on the receiving end of racist & sectarian abuse. (he did say not on the scale of the Hamilton game at the weekend but was still singled out)

All this after the warnings shown on their screens inside the stadium that fans singing the famine song "Will be arrested"!!!

Oh and they spent the whole game abusing a youg lad for chosing to play for Ireland while Nacho McNogoals got the biggest cheer of the night?? A puzzling bunch to say the least.

Hail Hail
Gogo

Henriks

I read a comment that JMcC was loudly booed at Ibrox when he was substituted but the abuse was not as bad as at the weekend.

I for one am glad that Gordon Brown is tackling the real issues of a couple of radio japesters being a bit rude rather than the accusations of racism and sectarianism from a sizeable minority of the people he's in charge of. Oh, hang on a minute...

A little bit of satire there, ladies and gentlemen

BenEltonCSC

Henrik, according to a report i read earlier on the internet (can't remember where) he was given the dogs abuse he better get used to. It may be the rotten mob just now, has he played at tynecastle yet? He can expect the same there (there's probably a few other grounds could be added), heaven help the poor boy if his dream comes true and he signs for us!

thismancraig, Id be lying if i said i knew the exact details, but didn't Wenger take some time to adapt and get his team playing the football he wanted? This was what murray was claiming to be doing with le guen and he bottled it by backing his players. To compare him to Barnes is ridiculous, what had barnes done before (or since) as a manager? Le Guens record speaks for itself, i hope he turns PSG into a force again. As i say i was delighted when he left, i remember Paul67 knocking them for being linked with him and suggesting graham roberts was more likely! The day Le Guen left was summed up by the reaction of the rangers supporters that i seen/spoke to. By that i mean, the little neds at work/ftp brigade/follow followers were delighted but the few decent rangers fans i know were absolutely gutted and would've sacrificed a season or 2 if thats what it took to let him try and make his mark.

Anyway, it's all hear say and we won a watch at the end of the day either way.

Cadizzy and Abu Dhabi Bhoy, thanks for the info Ghuys. My problem is not being able to find the channel on Sky, it's the bar staff in my CSC who dare not interfere with the set-up for fear of putting the Bhoys on the big screen and denying the "home" punters their english fitba ! As far as I know, they have two boxes, Sky and a freeview set-up (I think) and they can chop and change the 4 screens to show 4 different programmes (I think again !) So my dilemma is, do I go there in the hope that they know what they're doing, or can I find it on the cable receiver I've got in my digs (whatever kind that might be and does it make a difference ?)

Vmhan, gave me a wee chuckle there and I'm just sorry I was running late (as ever and guess what old Ghuy made that happen !?) and I never got to catch up. Hopefully next time huh ? And please send me the link when you can 'cos I'm sure it'll come in handy if not tonight, then at a later date.

Off topic but othere have mentioned Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand so thought I would give my tuppence worth.

The original programme where the prank calls were made was aired saturday week ago and in the following week the Beeb received 2 complaints for swearing.

Following the media hysteria about this a further 18,000 complaints have now been received. I wonder how many of those people actually heard the original programme? If they did, why did it take them so long to complain?

I think it's just a fuss over nothing and now both have been suspended by the BBC.

Dearest Blessed Margaret
I prefer to remember (will we ever forget?)your domestic achievements...si monumentum requiris circumspice

In Scotland a Tory is as rare as a Red Indian in Manhattan(as the Times said of the Paddies during the Famine)and the very existence of the Union is threatened.

On a personal level I miss your whacky sense of humour...who can forget your stand up routine on the steps of Downing Street.."Lord let me be an instrument of Thy peace"

I posted Strachans comments on the injuries from last nights ET around 3pm on this thread

Mort,

Just my opinion but,

I dont think that an innocent 87 year old man deserves prank phone calls regarding the ALLEGED sexual behaviour of his grand daughter recorded on his answer machine at home and broadcast to the nation especially by two talentless richards.

If the truth be told this should have been kept private by all concerned. I´m sure Andrew Sachs and his grand daughter would also have preferred that. Ross and Brand should be informed in writing that they should be looking for work like anyone else would. Nobody involved in this needs the publicity but the length of time it took to break in the press I feel is irrelevant

The outcry I feel is justified.

Re: Poppies. Until I lived in Northern Ireland I hadn’t even considered that some people didn’t wear them. IMO, those who have grown up where paramilitaries were the norm miss the point. Paramilitaries are by nature politically inspired voluntary combatants. Professional soldiers are apolitical and are essentially technicians, the civil servants of combat. They have to be above politics. Once signed up they must, on pain of prison, fight regardless of politics or the nature of the conflict.

We remember them as individuals who did a very dangerous job that most of us wouldn’t do. Leave politics out of this. It’s got nothing to do with them. This is for the common soldier as individuals and analysis of the politics or the rights and wrongs of particular wars is not needed if you stick to that principle. IMO, our soldiers are very hard done by in terms of pay and conditions. BTW, those who think its triunphalist or whatever have obviously never watched the remebrance stuff on the telly at all because under the military/establishment veneer, it is saturated with regret and anti-war sentiment.

themanfromgodknowswhere - the poppy is used in the north as a POLITICAL emblem and a badge that says - I am a unionist. I have no objection top the remembrance of cannon fodder used in rich mens wars or those who fought fascism. I would never ever wear a poppy though.

Until I am allowed to freely wear an Easter Lily in remembrace of those who fought in a different war for a different cause that will be the case.

Roberttressal

Comparing remembrance in Britain of the British war dead with commemoration in Britain of those who fought against Britain is hardly comparing like with like. It would be the equivelent of expecting a Cromwell commemoration fun day in Dublin. Within a given country, celebration of wars against said country will never ever ever be acceptable and will never be given equivelence with figthting for it. That would be insane. Its the same in every country. Why should the UK be different?
