Murray gets Pythonesque about Scotland's Shame
Sir David Murray: "I have gone on record in the past as saying Scotland's shame is not sectarianism, it is drugs and obesity."
It took me a second to place this sentiment, before I remembered:
American tourist: "What I'm suggesting is that this place is the crummiest, shoddiest, worst run hotel in the whole of Western Europe."
The Major: "No! No, I won't have that, there's a place in Eastbourne...."
One of John Cleese classic Fawlty Towers moments seems to have inspired Sir David Murray into authentic Pythonesque logic. There are at least two more shameful aspects to Scottish society than sectarianism.
What a relief.
I do, though, have some sympathy for Murray. His claim that "In the 20 years I've been at this club there has been a vast, vast improvement on sectarianism at the club," is irrefutable. He ended a sectarian signing policy which stretched back decades and even recruited a Catholic manager, an act which was unthinkable before his time.
19 years after taking the first of these steps, Rangers are still facing the same (17th Century) internal battles, but unlike 1989, when Murray was an imperious figure in Scottish football and could confidently challenge the Rangers support, he has lost most of his authority and will find his pronouncements opposed at every turn.
News coverage this morning will enrage his opponents, who will recoil that he has associated the words 'Rangers' and 'sectarian' again, and will certainly not comply with his wishes.
This will not end well. Or soon.
We have so much to ponder. Obese people are certainly not the healthiest, but are they worthy of shame? Sounds a bit fattist to me. Anyway, it's lunch time so better not overindulge, just in case there is a whole new avenue of prejudice about to open up, even if you are offered a"wafter-thin mint".

Why should/would any Scots born player with irish ancestry want to play for a country where they're continually told to go back to Ireland ?

“I have always wanted to play for Ireland and when the manager Sean McCaffrey picked me for these fixtures against Italy, I was delighted. I know that I’ll have to work very hard to get a spot in the team because they are a good side.
“I was born in Scotland but my mother’s family are from Donegal. My grandfather, Paddy Coyle, was a big influence on me before he died and it was my intention to represent Ireland if I was lucky enough to be selected.
“I was a Glasgow Celtic supporter as a kid and my grandfather used to tell about the history of Celtic and the Irish International team.
“I spent some time in Ireland with my relatives when I was younger and my aunts and uncles are coming along to the games during the week. My parents are coming over from Scotland, too.

Can't believe I am reading of dan divers on CQN. St Aloysius did have a few very good cricketers in the 80s, with some getting recognition for Scotland I think.
Also interesting to see that the College is still joint leaders in number of wins of the Scottish Schools rugby cup (5 times) along with Merchiston and Gala, yet incredibly only a couple of OA's ever played for Scotland at this sport, indeed only 4 catholics, that i am aware of have ever played for Scotland at Rugby.

Murrays comments, and Bains, were designed to show their support for the 'support', yet only highlighted the major problems they face. I agree Paul, the divisions between the owner of the club and the rank and file 'minority' will never now be healed!
Worse still, I believe it's affecting SDM's ability to divorce himself from it all...which must be a double edged blow to his pride and his finances!
Where it all ends up I don't know, but we need to keep ourselves away from being draggged into any squabble and keep ahead of the game!

moonbeams blames the council for the delay in his superdome plans
Rangers to get green light for £350m Ibrox plan
RANGERS are set to be given the go-ahead today for an ambitious s350million development around Ibrox Stadium.
Chairman Sir David Murray, left, has told supporters Glasgow City Council are finally ready to transfer land to the club for a project they aim to complete before the Commonwealth Games in 2014.Record Sport can reveal plans for the 45-acre site include a hotel, housing, an underground car park, mini arena for concerts and exhibitions and retail space.
Murray will now seek funding partners and while he admits to concerns over the economy, he insists the project is a goer and will deliver financially for Rangers.
Plans to re-build Ibrox have been put on the back burner but there will be a walkway leading to the listed Ibrox main stand and possible redevelopment in future.
Rangers will be offered land at market rates around the Hinshelwood area of Ibrox, which includes the flats behind the club car park, which is also part of the scheme. The all weather sports facility in front of the stadium would also come down and be rebuilt elsewhere in Govan.
Murray apologised to fans at the Rangers' agm for the delay in the announcement, originally expected in May, and claimed the council were dragging their feet.
He expects the development to be a success and hinted there is political goodwill behind the project, not least because the area around Celtic Park is also seeing massive investment ahead of the games.
Murray said:"We are assured the plans will be approved by Glasgow Council and I believe they have a fair chance of succeeding in some shape or form - due to help going on in other areas of the city, may I say.
"They need to prepare the city for the Commonwealth Games and let's hope we can find suitable partners and the economy's in better shape.
"We have a masterplan that will hopefully give financial benefit to Rangers because the funds will go to the club and no one else."
Rangers will give further details of the scale of the development in the next fortnight.

Paul67,
during your server outages a few weeks back I was watching reruns of Fawlty Towers on UK TV Gold
I thought of you when he said this
"A*?E I have to put up with from you people. You ponce in here expecting to be waited on hand and foot, while I'm trying to run a hotel here. Have you any idea of how much there is to do? Do you ever think of that? Of course not, you're all too busy sticking your noses into every corner, poking around for things to complain about, aren't you? Well let me tell you something - this is exactly how Nazi Germany started. A lot of layabouts with nothing better to do than to cause trouble. Well I've had fifteen years of pandering to the likes of you, and I've had enough. I've had it. Come on, pack your bags and get out. "

Most of their justification for certain songs, chants, merchandise etc comes from the 'We think we're quite clever and have outflanked you lot' school of reasoning and skewed logic. But it's quite easy to see through, isn't it.
It's a smoke and mirrors trick, a speciality of Murray.
He was at it again his spurious 'the real problem is obese kids' tosh - a bid to try and take the heat off Rangers for a while.
I don't think Murray is stupid, but after nearly 20 years, surely he must now realise that the baggage that comes along with many Rangers fans is still there. He's tapped into it enough to keep cash coming in, but ultimately, hasn't done enough to stamp it out, I believe, for fear that money will stop coming in.
He's been quoted as saying that he could have bought his hometown team, Ayr United, and put millions into them instead of buying Rangers. Where's the huge fanbase of Ayr United fans that would been such a great marketing opportunity for a football entrepreneur? No, get a ready made niche with Rangers instead, A bit unsavoury and bigotted...ach, their money's as good as anybody's.
As for trying to sell Rangers - he seriously claims the reason he hasn't done so yet is because he wasn't assured that any potential buyers had the best interests of RFC at heart. Tosh, utter tosh. You can't sell damaged goods easily. A lot of polish would be needed to take the tarnish off that brand. Right enough, they should have plenty in a cupboard somewhere..it hasn't been used up on many trophies in the past few years.

Scotlands shame
So after Murray advising that sectarianism actually only comes in 3rd in resepct of Scotlands Shame can we expect TFOD jokers to update their repertoire to include regular rendition of "Who eat all the pies" "Roll out the Barrel" "Lip up Fatty" and all the jibes about aids and drugs that used to be aimed at the Edinburgers a few years ago.

Whilst i agree with your point RE McGeady and McCarthy i think their respective decisions say a lot more about Scottish society than your average Scot can bear to contemplate.
Why is it that these players feel more of a pull towards their grandparents home country than the one in which they were born in?
Surely it's not because they've grown up feeling unwelcome in the best small country in the world because of the very heritage i've just mentioned!
Will Murry now tackle Scotland's shame, by getting rid of those horrible half time greasy pies and replacing them with a nice Salad.
Awe Nawe, ha! :-) I need to save that one “you ponce in here expecting...”

The Ten Most Important games in the History of Celtic;
1/1892 Celtic 5 Queens Park 1, Scottish Cup final replay, at Ibrox Park, Glasgow.
The game was replayed after the first game, with Celtic winning 1-0,was abandoned due to 'crowd encroachment'
The first of many trophies, in what was then the more important competition against the premier team in Scotland at the time.
The balance of power in Scottish football was now going to tilt towards Brother Walfrid's bhoys..
2/1938 Celtic 1 Everton 0,Empire Exhibition Trophy final, at Ibrox Park, Glasgow. A rare opportunity to play competitive football against England's top teams was grabbed by Celtic with both hands.
3/1953 Celtic 2 Hibernian 0 Coronation Cup final, Hampden Park, Glasgow.
Again teams from England were invited. Celtic's victory was unexpected, as some critics felt they were only in the competition to' boost the gates'. In the next season Celtic won the Double, suggesting that the Coronation Cup winners were a very good footballing side.
4/1957 Celtic 7 [seven] Rangers 1 Scottish League Cup final, Hampden Park, Glasgow
Oh, Hampden in the sun.. and the warmth of those memories had to keep the Support warm for many years to come..
5/ 1965 Celtic 3 Dunfermline 2 Scottish Cup final, Hampden Park, Glasgow.
Only six weeks previously Jock Stein, the captain of the Coronation Cup and 53-4 Double winning teams, had been appointed manager at Celtic Park. Billy Mcneill, who is Stein's captain and most trusted lieutenant in the Years of Glory, scores a dramatic late winner.
The silverware drought is to become a flood..
6/1967 Celtic 2 Internazionale 1, European Cup Final, Estadio Nacional,Lisbon.
One Star means more..
7/1998 Celtic 2 St Johnstone 0 Scottish Premier League, Celtic Park Glasgow.
In his one and only season in charge Wim Jansen wins the title and prevents another Glasgow team winning'10-in-a-row'.
After going into an early lead through Henrik Larsson the crowd endure an afternoon of skull-splitting tension until the roar which greets Harald Brattbakk's second, league clinching goal uncorks champagne across the planet
8/ 2000 Celtic 1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3 Scottish Cup
This game had to be rescheduled after part of the roof on the Lisbon Lions stand came away before kick-off on the Saturday.
The roof then fell in completely on the' Dream Team' of John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish, not helped by poor league form including the squandering of a two goal lead at home in a defeat to Hearts. Barnes' exit leads to the appointment of Martin O'Neill
9/2003 Celtic 2 Porto 3 UEFA Cup Final, Olympic Stadium, Seville
If Lisbon in 1967 was the finest day in the Club's history then Seville belongs to the Support; even though the team played very well in what was an ultimately unsuccessful bid for a further European trophy.
Even now it seems difficult to accept that we went through the 2002-03 season without winning anything.
10/2008 Dundee United 0 Celtic 1 Scottish Premier league, Tannadice, Dundee

'More than a Club'
Anyways, just my selection.
I'm sure there should be more games included from before WW2
Murray is right. If you offered me a) 5 tubs of curried lard, b) 2 grams of smack along with a quarter ounce of Amsterdams finest, and c) a season ticket for Bileville, I know what two i`d go for. (if I could get off the couch) Shame.
A thought regards "foreign " players and a link to TRS.
Would TFOD consider singing TRS at Hapden tommorrow aimed at ridding the national team of ancestors of immigrants.
I thinks theres a fair few in the current squad
Also on SDMs version of Scotlands Shame - I seem to remember reading a couple of years ago that on the launch of a new shirt the Rankers shops very quickly ran out of size XXXL shirts and had to place an urgent order with the manufacturer.
Perhaps Minty should start to put his won house in order on both the obesity and sectarian issues not to mention the "smoking in the lavvies" issue that they are well on top off.
Burnley '78
I spend a lot of my social time in the company of O.A's and I have to say that they are the keenest of keen in talking about the 'old days' when they represented the College at Rugby and, as time goes bye, they would convince you that a Scotland cap was just around the corner. However, I know the truth! They were only interested in the booze, the stories about the punch-ups, the glorious defeats, the lack of women, the 'pleasure' of getting one of 'bills' from Phillipson, etc.
I do think the inference (perhaps?)about some sort of discrimination would not hold up as none of the guys in my era were ever good enough to move beyond Uni rugby.
P.S. all good guys I must add even macjay!
There's more than one kind of bankruptcy. Seems Rangers might be trying for all of them.

I'll need to change my moniker now.
Moonbeams half of a wet dream.
loumacarisbettingslip,
Murray's quotes are the usual spin - and slightly different from what the City Council says:
M: "Glasgow City Council are finally ready to transfer land to the club"
GCC: "dispose of its land holdings to RFC subject to receiving full market value" Sell not transfer!
M: ""We have a masterplan"
GCC: "Prior to committing the substantial financial resources required to undertake the detailed technical work necessary to develop a stadium precinct masterplan plan," You don't have a masterplan yet.
M: "We are assured the plans will be approved by Glasgow Council"
GCC: "Notes that a further report outlining the full terms of the option agreement, and the proposed development timescales will be brought back to Committee for consideration in due course." That's not approval!
So he needs to prepare a masterplan, apply for outline planning consent, get that approved, find funding partners (In this economic climate!), prepare a detailed planning application, do the necessary public consultation, get planning approval, put the financial package together and then start construction.
But the delay is the Council's fault!
macjay - DD is a legend, you must be a very old Bhoy indeed if you went to school with him! ;)
gallagher - I think most people in central Scotland from an Irish Catholic family background will have experienced sectarian abuse at some point, quite apart from the summer gauntlet of anti-Catholic, anti-Irish bigot parades. Frankly I'm surprised more Scots of Irish descent haven't chosen to play for Ireland over the years.
Inkybhoy :- Since 2000 we have taken three leagues, four Scottish Cups and four League Cups. While this is nowhere near what I would like it's hardly been a semi permanently empty trophy cabinet.

Did the Rangers Fans not win the "UEFA Fair Play" award last year?
Henriksbhoy :- I can't recall us being awarded that trophy :-)
While I'm one of the first to condemn many of the action of a section of the Rangers support I don't believe we are anywhere near the worst in Europe. We don't smuggle motorbikes into the ground so we can drop them on fans in the stand below, we don't launch flares at fans in the stand opposite, we don't have a league day cancelled due to murder of police.
We do have a problem and a big one but nothing in comparison to some of the Eastern European or Italian fans.
This isn't to try and claim in any way that the Rangers support are all angels I know they aren't and that we have a rotten core of bigots in the support.
Breaking News
Chelsea taking legal action against the Norwegain team Linn and looking to get the transfer fee (£16m) from the transfer of John Obi Mikel in 2006. Apparently he was not registered as a player with the club and their chairmen has been done for fraud.
SDM is currently reviewing the situation and has instructed his lawyers to demand the refund of £12m from Chelsea from the transfer of Tore Andre Flo on a similar argument as he was never a player either
Clever statement from Murray.
Faced with his deputy's statement that the Racist Song was just a bit of banter he would have been mortified if this song had been referred to directly as he simply could not have taken the same line as Bain but he managed to shift the emphasis away from RACISM in which Rangers are unique and on to SECTARIANISM where it can be argued they are but the other side of the coin.
RACISM has clearly defined characteristics and penalties in law whereas SECTARIANISM does not.
It was worth taking the media hit by admitting sectarian behaviour from a minority of the Rangers support to divert media attention away from the real issue of racism from the massed Ibrox choir.
Big Nan,
Genuine question.
you sure that sectarianism does not have specific legislation in place. I reckon it does but the Scottish authorities are loathed to use them akin to taking their finger out of the dyke but I could well be wrong.
Edward you may not of done any of that YET, but youse rioted in Manchester attackin innocent people and people doing their job(police) after youse got gubbed in Ueaf Cup, have stabbed people in stadium(Zenit fan) Rioted with cops in stadium(Osasuna), Smashed up opposition team bus in their own city and got fined for singing filth in same city(Villareal) and destroyed Bracelona and have now ruined it for any other visiting fan going there now. That is all in the past 3 year alone and in my account in the WORST in europe !
I have been trawling back and noticed some reference to James Traynor but not his actual words re. the TFOS. Any chance of an update.
Is he a racist or a racist apologist?
Edward
You exaggerate the Milan problem greatly - it wasnt a motorbike - just a Vespa scooter. And as the smoking ban kicked in big time here a few years ago and as Alan preston pointed out the Ibrox Prefects have stubbed this problem out and any other fire realted issues. I could also point out theres not much flair at Ibrox but the stage left at midday.
Om a serious note I remember just a few years ago 2 Celtic fans being killed in separate incidents in the near vicinity of Hampden following an old firm final. Surely at least as big a crime as killing one policeman.

Isn't there enough to worry about without beating ourselves up over a line in a song?
Sep 22 2008 James Traynor
WHAT? You are not offended by the Famine Song? Sorry, but you are a racist.
If your anger doesn't simmer at the very sound of this ditty then you, my friend, are as bad as the people singing it.
You, too, are tainted by a hatred of Irish Catholics.
That's the logic applied to this little number being belted out by some Rangers fans.
And you will detest it.
You will abhor it. You will write to your MSPs, MPs, UEFA, FIFA, the EU and the Vatican.
This is the most divisive, anti-social and downright malicious trend to be visited upon us yet.
God Almighty, what next?
Falkirk can't be called the Bairns because it might encourage paedophiles to buy season tickets.
Dundee United shall no longer be known as the Arabs in case it inflames problems in the Middle East.
Hibernian's ground will have to be renamed so that other religions are not offended.
Queen of the South can't be called Queens because Republicans and gays will be upset.
Dumbarton must have a complete name change as it could be deemed derogatory to people of limited intelligence.
And that brings us back to the offenders and the offended.
There are old folk among us who might freeze to death this winter because we are all being held to ransom by the power companies.
There are young families who will lose their homes because greedy bankers and lenders were allowed to vandalise the global financial system.
And depending on where you live or how much you have saved you might die because some authorities will not pay for life-saving medication.
These are outrageous. They are national disgraces and should shame every one of us.
So please, don't tell me a line in a song about the decade-long potato famine that made people flee Ireland in their tens of thousands in the middle of the 19th century is what we should be beating ourselves up about.
The Great Famine was a terrible time and it was a disgrace that so many people were allowed to starve to death or die from related diseases but surely we have more going on around us today which demands such levels of disgust.
You know what, a great many of us are sick and tired of the ridiculous behaviour of groups of Old Firm fans, who aren't even interested in the game any more.
The only points they seek are the ones they believe they collect every time they run clyping to a politician.
The line that seems to have offended a number of Celtic fans is something like: "The famine is over, why don't you go home?"
It's supposed to have enraged one fan so much he put in a complaint that had Irish diplomats raise concerns with the Scottish government.
Unbelievable, but if any politician even attempts to tell Rangers' fans to drop it we'll be entering into dangerous times that will threaten our right to free speech. This line is not inciting violence against anyone and it isn't celebrating the fact one million people died because of potato blight in the 1840s.
If anything the line is mocking the often cloyingly sentimental longing of Celtic fans for the old country and if you accept that's all it is then it might even border on humorous.
Actually, if some top comedian,a Billy Connolly or a Frankie Boyle had said something similar everybody would have been slapping their thighs.
So when did the gallows humour of the terracing, which for decades has made us all smile by cutting right through pomposity and politically-correct boundaries, become such a terrible thing?
Look, if Celtic and their fans wish to hang on to and protect their Irish heritage to the point where it actually seems mawkish that is absolutely fine. No one has any right to insist they celebrate their Scottishness instead and, of course, that should mean they have no right to impose their will on others.
And why is it a shock to them that Rangers fans will react in some way? Is it really surprising the other lot see this Irishness as anti-British?
If only we could all just be Scottish and proud, too. Like many Scots I have fairly strong Irish roots but Ireland isn't my country and never will be.
I'm sorry if that insults anyone but I am not offended by someone who doesn't share my view or does not believe that one day we will be a thoroughly decent, modern and thriving nation.
Somehow I cannot see why this line should offend. And don't start sloshing in that bilge about how big a race crime it would be if people were singing our immigrant communities should go home because the troubles have subsided in their own countries.
There are some who believe they shouldn't be here in the first place and that we should never allow in asylum seekers but these people are probably racist.
However, if any of these groups took to gathering regularly in sporting arenas to sing and long for their homelands and the old ways they, too, might be mocked.
But it wouldn't necessarily be racist. It's called freedom of speech. It is a fundamental right that must be protected.
We don't all have to support what is said but we should back the right to say it, provided it is not overtly racist, sectarian or likely to incite violence.
There is a piousness about some Celtic fans and it's as if this support can do no wrong.
They seem to have adopted a holier than thou attitude yet I have not heard one person who claims to be upset by that Famine Song line speaking out against those who sing in support of the IRA or of Nacho Novo catching a bullet.
Neither have they spoken out about the twisted people who indulge in the most disgusting and horrible chat on fans' message boards.
Those are what I call offensive but even so I would rather have that than live in a place where we are not allowed to open our mouths.
In retaliation to the Novo threats, Rangers fans contacted Spanish authorities and that was just as bizarre as the Celtic fan's complaint to an Irish politician about a stupid song.
Strathclyde Police should have dealt with the threats to Novo because they were of a violent nature and those Celtic fans on their imaginary moral high ground should have been more alarmed at that behaviour than anything else.
So, to all those, of any religion or race, who think Scotland is such a bad, twisted place full of bigots and racists there is only one thing to say.
Go.
Go on, just gather up your prejudices, take your suspicions and pack your loathing of Scotland.
Go find a better place to live and leave us to get on with the job of making something good of this country.

Posted on Thu, Oct. 09, 2008print email Scots and Irish meet after 100- year hiatus
By MARY LANDERS - Savannah Morning News --
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe we should take a leaf out of this book, albeit a bit more often and begin to disentangle the orange threads in our collective Celtic tapestry.
SAVANNAH, Ga. --Once every hundred years, the Scots and the Irish in Savannah get together for a drink.
This century, the event occurred Wednesday night at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.
The Irishmen of the Hibernian Society and the Scotsmen of the Saint Andrew's Society (and we do mean men - these are all-male clubs) met for dinner, where kilts mixed with tuxedos at each table. So did Jameson Irish whiskey and Dewar's Scotch whiskey. A former Irish prime minister who now counts the Scottish people among those he represents was the main speaker.
Bagpipes and drums opened the celebration with "The Wearing of the Green" and "Scotland the Brave."
Then the Most Rev. J. Kevin Boland, bishop of Savannah, gave the invocation.
"... and especially bless the haggis, which to those with Scottish blood is a blessing unto itself, but to those of us not so privileged is a gastronomical miracle of mysterious ingredients," Boland prayed in his County Cork brogue.
The two societies' first get-together in 1908 came about by coincidence. At the time, they discovered they were meeting separately at the same place - Savannah's Hussars Club.
This time around, the camaraderie was planned. Eugene McCracken, a member of both societies with paternal Scottish descent and maternal Irish descent, proposed the idea to mark the centennial of the previous event.
"Do you know what it's like being born half Scotch and half Irish?" he asked, in an obvious set up. "It's being born wanting a drink and being too cheap to go buy one."
But while such friendly ribbing was one order of the evening, there was a serious message, too. John Bruton, a former Irish prime minister and current European Union ambassador to the U.S., was the keynote speaker.
Both Ireland and Scotland have messages of great relevance to current turmoil, he said.
Scotland offers the great economist Adam Smith, known as a proponent of free markets, but who also preached that those markets would work only with "good moral sentiment" between people.
"There's been a breakdown in trust," Bruton said. "After all, credit is all about trust."
From the Irish, there are two lessons from a peace accord reached just 10 years ago, he said. First, you get peace by putting yourself in your antagonist's shoes. And second, to achieve peace, you have to talk to people you don't like.
Bruton, a personal friend of Saint Andrew's Society secretary Howard Morrison, began the evening with his own show of unity: The former Irish prime minister had a drink of Scotch.

James Traynor
To take him to task on just one point he made (im sure most have been covered elsewhere) the said Billy Connolly made a joke in October 2004 about Liverpuddlian hostage Ken Bigley - saying why dont they get on with it (similarities to Why dont you go home)
He was subsequently widely slated and I believe had to apologise for his poor taste - and rightly so
But Mr Traynor has either a short or selective memory - wonder which eh!

Roll forward to 5:04 on the video where Cleese says "Typical, typical and then goes on a rant about all he has done for his guests. Sounded to me just like Murray's attack on those Rangers fans who serve Rangers up on a plate.
Article in tonights ET
SIR David Murray has admitted Rangers could take over the running of the club shops again if JJB goes bust.
Murray defended the Ibrox club's decision to hand the rights to sell official Gers merchandise to the chain of sports shops in an £18million deal at the AGM yesterday.
However, the millionaire businessman has admitted he has been unhappy with the company's performance and revealed there is a Plan B' which will see the Glasgow giants regain control.
He said: "Financially, the JJB deal is still a good one. The payments are spread over 10 years and that guarantees the club £1.8 million a year. There are other elements to it as well.
advertisement
"However, there is no doubt JJB are not keeping their side of the bargain. There is a problem there. There has to be a question mark over the long-term viability of the company.
"I still think it was a good deal, but we have a Plan B to take ownership back into the club. That will only happen if JJB go out of business."
I think many are missing the SDM point here.
He has condemned as bile website activity amongst the shameful. What he's referring to here is not TFS but criticism of him and his management.
I like the bit in his 'masterplan speech' where he identifies easy planning and activity going into the east end and how his masterplan is going to balance things up, but then goes on to say that all this will ensure financial return as funds raised will go to RFC and no-one else.
So no great commonwealth/city feeling about benefit there then!
Also, in what way is CFC expected to benefit from any of the proposed developmnents in the east end? Or perhaps that was his snyde point, that although there will be much development in the east end CFC won't be getting any beans from it.
For every 5 commonwealth games developments in the east end we'll build 10 in Govan (on our own without any help cos no one likes us we don't care)!
ha ha. Don't you just love when the Big Whale is hurting!
Finally;
Nobody said the S word was Scotland's Shame. It was Scotland's SECRET shame, nudge nudge, roll up ma trews, shake my hand you know what I mean.
Bad diet, health and drugs in Scotland are bad. No, definitely not, not much of a SECRET there, David.

JOE HARPER is Scotland's Shame
Has SDM dyed his hair??
He seems a shade or two lighter than in previous years, a hue of strawberry blonde possibly?
What with Moonbeams blonde rinse, Bain's perma-tan and Gordon Smith's ridiculous hair piece it seems Scotland's Shame is middle aged (orange) men trying to look young!!
benjybhoy,
Does Gordon Smith honestly wear a hair piece ?
Awe naw
Where you been - everybody knows GS weres a rug
Jinky
I thought it was that spray on hair that Andrew Mc Neil uses.
Never trust a vain man.
Awe naw
Agreed -
But surely it suits his "role" covering up the truth
If we are going to have a pretty boy with no brain fronting the SFA can we not find one that doesn´t wear a wig ? I mean he can be as baldy as Jim Farry as far as I´m concerned I´m not baldist but this is the main reason why he is a commercial disaster. First rule of being a salesman is to lose the wig.
Two interesting things about yesterday. Murray's attempts at deflection and Gordon Smith saying clubs who have tried everything should not be punished. On top of this the Chief Cop says that there are too many folk singing the song for the police to act and its a club problem.
Apart from Smith commemting on something the SPL has responsibility for, enforcing SPL rules, when taken together points to a strategy of denial and powerlessness. "We did everything" (but condemn the song as racist)and they still sing it.
Now if I was holding a party which included folk from other countries and decided I did not want anyone to attend whom had been shown visible signs of being racist I simply would not invite them. Their friends might argue they were OK really, just a bit of banter but they were unwilling to give it up but I would be quite within my rights to say they could behave as the like, but not at my party.
The "We have done everything we can" and "nothing works/powerless" argument, if accepted by Scottish Football Authorities will only save Rangers from local action but should expose them to exclusion from European competitions next season.
The focus should now shift to the SPL, who have still to rule on Boruc's one fingered salute against a background of 7000 singing TFS. Its all gone quiet over there.
Well worth the watch.

All Time Celtic XI;
Playing 2-3-5 but funnily enough struggling to field a leftback
GK- JThompson 'the Prince'
FB- AMcnair 'the Icicle'; made his debut in 1904, left Celtic in 1925 at the age of 41, having played more league games and enjoyed the longest playing career of any Celt
FB- DMcgrain- in his prime the complete fullback.
HB- BMurdoch-a true maestro in conducting the Lions, with an unsurpassed range of passing.
HB- JKelly . The Clubs first captain, his signing was crucial in giving the new club credibility
HB- PMcstay- for too many years jinxed to be 'the good player in a bad team', he's good enough on his own merots to feature here
FWD- JJohnstone 'the Flying Flea'
FWD- PGallagher'the Mighty Atom'
These two are the supreme entertainers of their day, marrying breathtakingly impudent skill with bravery, their apparent fragility belying a steely determination to pick themselves up and take on their less- skilled tormentors.
FWD -HLarsson 'the King of Kings' Head and shoulders above any other player to wear the Hoops since joining the Club from Feyenoord. Goals, hardwork, assists, goals and more hardwork.
FWD -JQuinn. The first [of many] great centreforward; fast, strong and fearless.
FWD -JMcgrory. The greatest of them all. His goalscoring records will never be broken
Anyways, some great names there, and some great names absent.
Can anyone tell me why Glasgow City Council should just give this prime development land to RFC. Why not just sell it on the open market and allow murray holdings to bid for it. It's not as if MHolding are doing this for the good of the community there stated aim is to bring all profits back into RFC.

Further to what I sdaid eralier on focusing on the SPL:....
On the main topic of TFS/TRS and how to stop it the focus needs to be placed now - on the SFA and SPL.
These questions need to be asked of the SPL.
Do they agree with what Gordon Smith has said about not punishing clubs who have tried everything?
Is this the SPL policy too and, if so, are they going to change their rules to reflect this policy?
When are the SPL going to pass judgement on the Artur Boruc one fingered salute at CP?
In passing that judgement will they also be passing judgement AT THE SAME TIME on the club whose fans behind Boruc can be heard singing in large numbers a song classified as racist and which they had already been informed (according to the statement issued by Ranger's Chief Executive M Bain) was racist.
Will subsequent incidents of the singing of TFS AFTER Rangers had issued leaflets warning them of consequences (Easter Rd and Paisley), consequences that the police are now saying they cannot enforce, also be taken into account when deciding what action to take?
In failing to take timeous action are the SPL not risking intervention by UEFA that will damage not just Scottish Football but Scotland itself by showing our inability to police ourselves?
Whether this goes to the SPL or not these questions need to be voiced as often as possible and at every opportunity so that sooner or later they are heard and decisive action is taken to stop TFS/TRS being sung. Not acting is not an option for The Scottish Football Authorities both SFA and SPL.

I know poetry day was yesterday but I'm kind of getting into it now. I am going to start wearing cravats and staring into the distance
For twenty years Sir David ruled and ne’er a question uttered
The Huns were smart, knew where it’s at and the side their bread was buttered
Succulent lamb and tens for fives meant acquiescent orcies
The Darnel were too daft to know Sir Dave was telling porkies
The promise of domestic bliss was put to sleep by Jansen
Their songs went on, but now forlorn, and we were doing the dancing
So Davie spent to build a team of Champions League contenders
But here’s the catch, he failed to match Europe’s real big spenders
So no Big Cup or glory day (like we had with the Lions)
But Davie couldn’t see the signs and still he went a buyin’
He racked up debts with friendly banks (It’s fine, son, don’t you worry”)
Alas the friendly bank has tanked...alas for David Murray.
Now everyone, including Dave, wants him to find a buyer
The RST is making claims that Dodgy Dave’s a liar
The orcs themselves are catching on that Davie Boy’s no saviour
But when will Dave come out and slate their racist bad behaviour?
Let’s hope Lloyds Bank don’t act too rash and force an Ibrox crisis
It’s not my wish to see the Hun carved into little slices
It does not give me any joy if they’re brought to their knees by strangers
It’s much more fun in every game that WE destroy the Rangers

I work in a factory where all the guys must wear hard hats - one gent is well known to wear a rug under his and - I had never heard of this before - has various rugs of different lengths to give the illusion his hair is growing longer
One famous story - the lads were having a game of fitba on lunch and he was standing aside watching and eating his peice. the ball hits him in the head and is deflected on to his piece - knocking it from his hand.
A quandary - he likes his grub - does he grab his piece or keep his rug on his heed. at the end of the day he did manage neither and was left a tad red faced with a sguinty wig and a dirty sandwich.

Lubo 1977, any hints as to your name as we were obviously in the same year.
In the ‘twilight-zone’ of International week, before, in our boredom, we all start cyber-castrating each other, just remember this, with or without an acceptable left back, we are three in a row ‘champions', and further, we are now top of the league in the run in to being four in a row ‘champions'.
It is not your birthright to see four in a row, but it is your duty, as Celtic Supporters, to do all that you can, to ensure we achieve our mutual ambition.
Your duty started in August.
What would it be like to achieve such a dream?
Well it would be like THIS... only better. Much better.

The only reason he appears at Ibrox is because he is kept in a small cage and frequently beaten with reeds, and Martin Bain has threatened to make his family into Russian hats if he ever runs away. Sure, Broxy Bear might dance and caper on the pitch at the Darnel, but inside he's crying.
Nothing to do with Celtic but I've just been talking to a young woman who has just completed 3 years nurse training and who can't get a job appropriate to her training because.. there are no jobs.

Hiro - there's definitely something of the Mister Chips about DD. He's also one of those teachers that you don't appreciate till you look back on your school years with a bit more maturity, then you realise what a bloody good and dedicated teacher he was.
Back to finance......cos I love it.

RFC= £30M+ debt for 2009
RFC= No more 2010???
When a "small" business is losing money constantly with no sign of change it is only a matter of time before the administrator is called in.
Given the recognised and for the most part accepted projections above, with no European football this season and more difficult qualifying rules for 2nd place this season. Then, 2010 may indeed be giving them the benefit of the doubt.(Unless the new Govan market takes off????)
Ed, c'mon over to our place, c'mon we're having a party......
Modern LIBOR is rubbish too. The rate may have dropped a little but not as much as share prices. I wanted to flog my Merrill Lynch shares on Ebay but they've told me they have their reputation to uphold and unkindly suggested I took my junk to a car boot sale.

thought it was £3 mill a year for 10 years with £18 of the £30 mil upfront at the start?
Pauls analysis of their accounts talks about £3mill per year plus £1.45 amortisied each year ?
murray doing more smoke and mirrors ? surely not
the word stifle is an anagram of itself
V. interesting point raised by Auldheid ie the admission by senior police officers that they cannot or will not enforce the law of the land as too many Rangers supporters are breaking it with racist songs. This must be a fairly new approach to law enforcement and it may be unique to Scotland.
I think we should know whether Strathclyde Police plan to extend this principle to cover other criminal offences? For example, if a critical mass of Rangers fans murder or rape their fellow citizens will they be immune from prosecution on the grounds that a whole lot of them were doing it?
Allgreen, I noticed the “£1.8m” comment reported in various places and also wondered. They earn £3m cash each year and received £14.5m up front at the start of the 10 year period.
In year one they therefore earned £18m (rounded up). I can only assume that the press were confused and decided to follow the first report, or that Murray was unclear.
Once A Bhoy,
what about the new £350M development, he's spinning moonbeams and looking for backers, can anyone here see anyone being suckered into this, is it his final crack at property development ?

Duffield seeks a body odour solution from Master Baker, Brown Browning
BB: Brown Browning - how may I assist you ?
GD: Brown, it's Brother Gordon Duffield
BB: If memory serves we no longer have any business to discuss outwith the esoteric confines of Lodge Novo, Duffield
GD: Antidote, Browning
BB: My father's spinster sister? What's she got to do with the price of buttered baps ?
GD: Don't play the fool with me, Browning. You did me up like a kipper with your so-called soothing agent for flaky, irritable and blistering scalp.
BB: Product recall, Duffield
GD: Narrowboat Macaroon Fondant, five-litre tub
BB: I know my products, Duffield. We had to recall the multi-purpose fondant cream. Apparently the mixture came into contact with our famous Troon Tuna & Sweetcorn Paninis
GD: My scalp smells like a fortnight-dead Troon tuna. My office staff are in open rebellion. They're addressing me as the CEO of the Smelly Fish Aroma. Help me, Grayling .... I mean .... er.... Browning.
BB: Diet, Duffield
GD: I beg your pardon ?
BB: Worcestershire Sauce crisps.
GD: Will they help ?
BB: Absolutely - if taken in the correct quantity and as a suppository
GD: You're out of your mind, Browning
BB: Suit yourself, mackerelman.
GD: Tell me. Go ahead, tell me.
BB: Two standard packets daily. NOT from a multipack and no other flavour. Insert first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Trust me on this one, Duffield. Fish and chips, the Great British classic !
GD: Thank you, Browning. See you at Lodge Novo.
BB: Two weeks, Duffield and remember - always complete the course.

Burnley 78 evokes memories re Dan Divers , if it is not a pseudonym, retired from the College a year ago. Never thought him a football man. however, I also wondered why Jim Craig's son, James the flying wing , was dropped like a hot potato from the Scotland rugby team. Couldn't be because of his school, could it ? It was hinted at by a headteacher I knew. I like rugby but I am very wary of the establishment pull. Say there is no sectarianism in rugby, Davie M. Incidentally a Canadian pipe band magazine ran a poll a while back "Is there sectarianism in judging ?" I never saw the result but a hell of a lot of Norn Iron bands were prizewinners .
Rugby's shame ? Piping's shame ? They'll get their come-uppence one day.

While he's at it he's only going to be serving non-addictive de-caffeinated drinks - after all if you remove the demon drugs then sectarianism will disappear as a natural consequence.
It's all very subtle dave. Pity they handed out that award in Oslo today. You could've been a contender...
Martin 47, do you still explain the Protestant Wind by using the analogy of Rangers getting a fluke last minute winner against Celtic through a freak gust of wind carrying the ball over the heads of the despairing Celtic defence? If so, who has replaced John Greig as the jammy villain of the piece?

Excellent clip, I just knew that the last two goal clips were going to be against the Huns and Manure. To think that there are some amongst us that say he is useless because he doesn't do bone-crushing tackles. The abuse he received after the Villareal game was astonishing. The man is poor class.
One pedantic point on your post though, he will receive a fourth championship medal regardless if he left on January or not as he would have played the required 10 games to receive a medal.

allgreen on October 10, 2008 4:24 PM – RFC announced the JJB deal in March 2006. It was ‘worth a minimum £48m over 10 years’, comprising an initial cash consideration of £18m plus guaranteed minimum annual royalty of £3m.
The deal was effective from 8 June 2006. RFC treated £3.5m of the initial consideration as turnover in their Accounts for year ended 30 June 2006 (2006 profit = £92k).
The remaining £14.5m of the initial consideration is released/amortised over the remainder of the contract (± 10 yrs). The annual royalty excluding bonuses is therefore £4.45m (£3m + £1.45m).

Don't see any point in rebuilding the south stand as we only fill the stadium for CL matches now - or against TFOD. We need to play a Euro league type structure, with top class opposition every home game, to get a full house. Current financial climate also a good reason not to spend too much at the moment.
Did not realize I was corresponding with so many fat junkies on here ... Scotland's shame indeed !
Scotland's shame is the cover up of the sectarianism that has been tolerated, indeed welcomed for many, many years by so many.

Afternoon all,
Does Sir Mintys (low fat, of course) new found interest in the eating habits of the Scottish people extend to his lapdogs in the press? Will he be serving tofu salads and water instead of succulent lamb to his salivating peons? Will these guardians of truth and justice be revolting at the prospect? Can we expect the honorable cur, sorry, Sir David not to have such an easy ride in the press and get his just desserts?
I think the people need to know!

From the times
Expensive strikers and the law of diminishing net returns
- Mark Viduka will probably prove to have cost Newcastle United about £1 million a goal but, for clearly failing to deliver value for money, he is in good company. Andriy Shevchenko must be grateful that performance-related pay is so uncommon in football.
- Chelsea paid AC Milan £30 million for Shevchenko and gave the Ukraine striker about £13 million in wages over two years but received only 22 goals in return, only nine of which came in the Premier League.
While the transfer fee Milan gave Chelsea to re-sign Shevchenko was not revealed, it is likely that the Stamford Bridge club paid considerably more than £1.5 million per goal for the player’s services.
- Sergei Rebrov, Shevchenko’s former Dynamo Kiev team-mate, also short-changed a London club, scoring 16 times for Tottenham Hotspur at almost £1 million a goal.
- Arsenal paid a slightly higher rate for the eight goals that Francis Jeffers scored for them (£1.1 million each) and Mateja Kezman was another striker Chelsea will want to forget, having paid about £7 million net for a return of seven goals.
- The cost per goal to Aston Villa for signing Bosko Balaban was infinitely worse — he did not score in return for the £5.8 million transfer fee and £1.5 million wages that the club paid before releasing him for nothing.

Following whitedoghunch's comments...
Mark (originall Marco) Viduka, what can you say...
Some say if he hadn't had his mini-breadkdown immediately having signed for Celtic we would have won the league with Dr Jo. I really liked Dr Jo!
Two Viduka memories:
(1) He "scores" a goal when the ball essentially bounces off his not inconsiderable backside... looks around and then celebrates as if he had jinked the ball past the entire opposition team. (A hazey memory... can't rememeber which game... sometime during Dr Jo's post-Christmas goalfest period)
(2) After a game at Celtic Park... man with huge beer belly stuffing himself with chips: "That Viduka.... he's a lazy b---d"
There was also a song that included his name that was rightly much condemned.

there were quite a few contributions from some Hill Street greens earlier today (Philsilvers & Burnley 78). I'm sure Dan Divers will be overjoyed at being mentioned on a football site for the second time.
Its still very funny the huns who bought into the list of catholic players who has allegedlly played for them on one of their sites but all were teachers at St Aloysius.
Let's hope our players on international duty come back unscathed due to our upcoming important schedule.

So who's up for some more baseball?
Dodgers @ Phillies, Game 2 starts in about ten minutes. Two right handed pitchers start tonight: Chad Billingsley for the visitors and Brett Myers for the Phillies.
Phillies lead the 7 game series 1 - 0, so this is an important one. The next three games are scheduled for LA, with the final two, if needed, back in Philadelphia.

Hi everyone,

Darren Fletcher's Tribute to Tommy Burns ...
The Manchester United midfield player recalls his development as a footballer under the former Scotland coach Graham Spiers
Darren Fletcher, asked to reflect yesterday on his development as a footballer, paid the following moving and unrehearsed tribute to Tommy Burns, the former Celtic and Scotland coach who died in May.
“I've always been one of those players who, if I give the ball away, I'll never hide, and the one person who always remarked on that to me was - God rest his soul - Tommy Burns,” Fletcher said.
“Tommy had the same attitude. He used to pull me aside with Scotland and say, ‘If you give the ball away, never hide, go and get it back, show courage and bravery.' It is one thing I've always remembered about him.
“Tommy was a massive influence because he was a great man and a great coach. I learnt a lot from him. Off the pitch he was so funny and had all the lads laughing, but he could be serious, too.
“He once nutmegged me in Wales when we had a game between the starting line-up and the rest of the subs and the staff.
I was trying to press him, and he nutmegged me, and he must have shown a repeat of it on the video about 20 times on every trip we went on after that.
“I think that's why we suffered such a big defeat that night in Wales [4-0 in February 2004]. I think my confidence was shot because Tommy had nutmegged me. But he was a great man and a great coach.
“I've never hidden when I give the ball away, and Tommy used to emphasise that point a lot. He used to make the point to all the lads, and I'm sure that everyone else has taken something and learnt from him as well.
“He also once spoke about how he hadn't got too many caps for Scotland because of the quality of player he was up against in his day. But I know that Tommy was a great footballer. You get pennants rather than caps for being in the squad, and Tommy had more pennants than caps.
“I'm sitting here with 40 caps and a great player like Tommy Burns only got eight. It is quite humbling.”

A wee suggestion for the DJ. If we touch wood as i tyoe win 4 in a row, to really make them suffer i think it would be hilarious if we done this again. I remember this after the 5 1 game in 1998 and it was hilarious. This would really make them suffer. For me this would cause them real pain. It would also give me satisfaction for the torture endured in the 9 in a row era in the 90's.

Thanks,it should be a good game.
It will be strange going to Hampden to watch Scotland for the first time in many years.
The last Scotland game i attended was Wembley '88 ,lots of English in Rangers tops that day
causing trouble, around the time when the Beast was signing a lot of English players for them.
Anyway it wasnt a pleasant experience that day ,also lost 1-0 if i recall.
With a few Celtic players likely to start it will make it that bit more enjoyable.

But the pitcher stars again with the bat for the Phillies! A 2 RBI base hit for Brett Myers. And the Dodgers starting pitcher is hooked.
That's followed by a 2 run triple for Shane Victorino. And another pitcher is hooked.
Bases are loadad after a couple of walks
Dodgers 2 Phillies 8 - and we're still in the third innings.

Note that I have over 700 posts there and my most recent 500, going back to September 2007, are recorded.

For those that may have missed it, my original post/request is reprinted at the end of this one. If there is any other way that I can prove my allegiance please tell me so. Further, I will post an excerpt of an article I am using detailing rascism against the Irish in Scotland. While far from proof that I am a Celtic fan, I feel that it adds weight to my statement that I am indeed researching a paper on these issues. I wish I could post the whole article for interest's sake, but I have accessed it through my university's JSTOR account and am unaware of any way to reproduce it.
Here is the excerpt: http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=temptl1.jpg

Although I've never thought much of David Murray and even less since April 1994 I have to give credit when it's due.
Rangers have obviously been doing their own research and found the posts on Rangers website ARE vile and sickening.
Therefore yesterday was progress.
If an addict wants to beat his habit does he not have to first admit he has a problem?
Murray has only paid lip service to Scotland's Shame up until yesterday. That was the first time that I can recall Rangers FC openly admit they have a serious problem.
Although it must be said that he has done more than anyone to address Rangers internal affairs by overseeing the signing of a series of Catholic players, the clubs' first Catholic captain and the club's first Catholic manager. He has set a good example but obviously now feels he has to go further into the clubs mire of sectarianism.

I think we can all agree that rearrangers as a club are better now compared to the pre-Minty Moonbeams standard. But I would contend that this was only because UEFA were looking at them very closely before 'Le Petit Merde' signed.
He did not admit there is a serious problem. He still played the minority card. For anyone now to believe that there are only a minority of rangers fans indulging in their new repertoire is either deaf or lying. It is loud and clear every week. In my opinion he needs to acknowledge that before any further progress is made.

do you think dave has the clout and bottle to win the power struggle that is going on on the southside today .IMO he has missed the boat the fundamentalist no longer see him as a man who can put them where they believe they BELONG .Why do you think Edgar and the RST fragmented .Daves days are well and truly numbered ,he is caught between a rock and a hard place .

Sorry for the delay in replying - nipped out for a ciggie. :-) To answer your question no and definitely no. As you say he had the chance and missed it. We made great strides all those years ago because your namesake helped us in a multitude of ways. Bhoys Against Bigotry was a landmark in Scottish football. However, it only worked because our support (in general) wholeheartedly embraced it. We accepted their was a problem and dealt with it. We still accept we can improve and to me that is difference between both sets of fans (again in general).

No these are just the playoffs. The winners of this series play the winners of the Phyllies v Dodgers.
This is like a semi-final series.
Because of the all-star win by ALS over the NLS the first games of the "final" will be played in either Tampa or Boston (whoever wins this series) then they will move for the next 3 games to either Philadelphia or LA then back for the last two games.

I still have a soft spot for the miami dolphins ,although I am sure they are maybe called something completely different now .
BUT DON'T KNOCK IT THAT'S HOW A FAN IS BORN
DublinBhoy
To be honest that's how it started for me, although I started watching during the Ashes series England won in 2005. Since then I'll watch their matches in the hope they get hammered. What's worrying is that i find myself watching the domestic Cricket on Sky during the summer weeknights. Either that habit, or my addiction to lurking on here every waking minute will see me divorced!
The only American team I used to follow were the Philadelphia Eagles as my Aunt lives there and she used to bring me back some cracking gear (being green and white/grey helped right enough). To be honest though I haven't checked how they're getting on for at least 10 years.
Dont have much time for american football too much stop and start but i first got hooked on baseball in japan more than 10 years ago Hiroshima Carp were my team who also played in red....the famed Hideki Nomo ex LA Dodgers set the trail blazing for japanese stars to enter the major league and he was soon followed by Kobe's Ichiro who seems to carry a poor mariners team on his back. BTW Red Sox are much more of a balanced team since Manny "who" threw his toys outta the pram
UNEW MIKE
I wouldn't consider him an ace by any means but his numbers really are fantastic throughout the season. 18 wins and only 3 loses.
John Lester is really looking good too. He will be pitching on Sunday I think. Beckett when on form is magic too.

I think with any game you start by picking a team, using whatever criteria that makes sense to you...colours, city or 'traditions'. Then keep an eye out for them and how they do through out the season. Gradually you pick up on the rules and by then you're well and truly hooked.
I could be wrong though
Hail Hail

Dice-K is in the zone now with another 2 strike outs after a nervy start seems to have found his location more consistently BTW since Dai-su-ki means I love you in Japanese this explains why the first male child in Japan is sometimes called Daisuke

I wouldn't have a clue on that mate, my addiction started as I work nights and it was either the Cricket or those endless auction or property development programmes on during the day! It's just grown on me over time, so much so I would now consider my knowledge of the game to be quite good.
Off to my kip as I'm up in 4 1/2 hours to take the kids to their football. Whoever you guys are all cheering for I hope they win, though I'm picturing you all watching the telly and on the PC with those big hats with the beers and straws attached! Whoever invented those is a GENIUS!

Like football winning away from home is very important particularly in this series. Boston are very difficult to beat at home, in Fenway...the crowd makes a big differences and can really boost the team.
Hail Hail
You're right, Tek has been pretty poor at bat but is very important to the team. I have been more disappointed by Ortiz though, but he had the injury right at the beginning of the season. I don't think he has really gotten over that.

In fairness Ortiz was both out standing and consistent in the previous 2/3 seasons often was so unplayable that he was intentionally walked but has finally succuumbed to niggling injury which has affected his form. Tek is also the team captain and I had forgotten that Dice-K was unbeaten on the road...
Just reading back from 4 pm EST of course.
Seems I missed a real exciting game from Philly.
Caught a glimpse of the catch from Riverino(?) at the wall.

No, not really. When I moved to the States I landed in Boston and stayed for 4.5 years. The Sox had not won the World Series in 86 years...you may have heard of the famous "Curse of the Bambino" when Babe Ruth was traded to the Yankees. Well the year I arrived the curse was reversed and they won the World Series.
I just got totally caught up in the whole thing, the excitement, the passion and the history.
I used that link about the charity thing to wind up a couple of Dodgers fans on here. The Red Sox play in Green on Paddys Day and special occasions. When they first brought out the green uniform the team donated the uniforms to charity. That said the Red Sox do have a great tradition of helping local charities. I suppose most teams would do the same thing in their home cities, so probably is not just a Sox thing.
Also, as you may know Boston is historically a huge Irish city though a little less so now. I really love Boston, it is as European as you can get and is one of the few places in the US I could say has a true "culture". They are very proud of their rebellious nature too :) But I could not deal with the winters so moved down here to Florida in June.
So there you go, thats my association with the Sox and Boston.

Hi guys, GG:
take it that is the game over and you guys are now off to your beds.
I quite enjoyed that game too. I was down in Manchester (Leigh) at the time and remember the BBC reporting that Hearts had infact beaten Dundee two - nought. I switched off the TV and went into a sullen huff for about four hours before being told the correct score by of all peepil, a Belfast Rangers supporter.
Lifted from the Herald:
“Rangers Football Club was yesterday given the go-ahead for a multimillion-pound development close to its stadium.
The plans include a new hotel and shops around the Glasgow club's Ibrox ground.
It is hoped the development, reportedly to cost £350m, will breathe new life into the rundown Govan area.
Glasgow City Council yesterday agreed to transfer the land to Rangers, noting the project would make a "very significant contribution" to its own redevelopment plans.
Rangers chairman Sir David Murray will now begin a search for partners to back the development.
A club spokesman said yesterday: "This is a significant step forward in an exciting project that can have a major impact in regenerating the Govan area and delivering real benefit to the whole of Glasgow, particularly in view of the Commonwealth Games coming to the city."
The proposals include transforming flats in the Hinshelwood area near the stadium into a complex that will include a hotel and shops, and the redevelopment of a local football pitch. Sir David apologised yesterday at the club's annual meeting for the time spent getting the green light for the scheme, blaming delays at the council.”
So June the 1st did finally get here with the belated backing of the council, but will the ‘Banks’ endorse it?
I’d love to see the South Stand redeveloped just so as I could move my seat. Come on Celtic you know it makes sense.
Kitalba

So now you know. All below was lifted from Vital Football:
"First of all, I would like to say the below article was not written by me, all credit goes to Socrates from Svenskafans.com, I thought I would put it here for our Vital Chelsea contingent to read. But once again, all credit goes to the User Socrates from Svenskafans.com. It is a few parts from his post on that site, read on!
I note with interest some of the earlier posts over the connection between Chelsea and Rangers. Having lived through the development of the relationship (yes I really am that old!) I hope that my perspective helps to throw some light on it.
1. In the sixties it became fashionable at English games to chant Rangers or Celtic, particularly in the half time intervals. At Chelsea this was heavily steered towards Rangers even then. I think it was to do with the disproportionate amount of serving and ex servicemen (and their patriotic leanings) who frequented Chelsea.
Remembering also that the old nickname was the 'Pensioners' referring to the proximity of the Old servicemans home near the ground. They still receive a number of complimentary tickets even today and they can be seen in attendance resplendent in their red regalia. There is however no doubt that the 'bias' towards anything 'Unionist' was also to do with right wing links which became more evident and visible in the 70's with the growth of the NF, with Chelsea being a known recruiting ground. Nothing to be proud of, but a fact and factor nonetheless.
2. The seventies saw a dramatic shift towards the Rangers allegiance. This was definitely due to the IRA bombing campaign in London and north Surrey, from where Chelsea drew its support. The Guildford bombing and its fatalities in particular signalled an outcry against the IRA and anything associated with it. Celtic were seen as sympathetic to the republican cause. Overnight any Celtic chants disappeared.
3. The seventies (and early eighties) were described as the dark days of Chelsea FC when the hooligan element dominated the headlines. At least 2 of the Chelsea 'firms' at the time had their 'leadership' drawn from ex-servicemen, most of whom had served in Ulster. This strengthened the anti IRA, anti Celtic feelings even further. Many had formed personal relationships with Ulster Orangemen and also with Rangers supporters serving in various parts of the world at the time. Some of these Chelsea veterans also formed links with protestant paramilitary groups in Ulster as well after leaving the forces.
4. With the ban on English clubs playing in Europe in the 80's, many more Chelsea fans started travelling with Rangers in Europe, some admittedly for the wrong reasons but the majority for the camaraderie that was now growing between the fan groups. The fan base at the Jolly Malster pub, just off the Fulham Road would arrange trips to Europe and sometimes to Rangers home games. The pub became a meeting place for Chelsea and Rangers fans. It still does. There were 50 or 60 Rangers fans there last year when Chelsea played Celtic in its pre-season 'friendly'. (That`s another story by the way!)
So in summary (and this was meant to be a short note!) I think that the less savoury aspects of the early relationship are behind us leaving a feeling of great friendship and camaraderie. I think those that have not experienced a Rangers/Chelsea game before then you will find that it will be one to be enjoyed as the special relationship between many of the older supporters has a chance to 'live it for real' again."
Kitalba
Couldn't resist commenting on Murray's development plans.
The 700 original amount has now been halved since the original moonbeams landed.
I expect an Icelandic bank will be happy to back this venture.
I think GCC are having a quiet guffaw at giving him the green light.
Is this his tit for tat with the developments in the east end for the games?
'GG Good night all.

Kit thanks, remember the `67 game so well.
The thought was : could we really win the big one?
We all know the answer.
The thing I cant get my head around is how can anyone associated with Rangers expect their latest venture to be a success.
A concert arena, retail shops and a Hotel when 5 miles down the road at Braehead there are more shops than any shopaholic housewife could need and a concert arena.
And does Glasow really need another hotel???....In Govan???
Sorry if posted already, but just been reading that Roman Abramovich has lost 12billion pounds- that's 12,000,000,000 pounds, in the stock market collapse.
Now I thought that was more or less what he was worth.
Chelsea owe him 700million. If he wants it back, they have a year to find it.
The part owner of Arsenal (can't remember his name, another Russian I think), has lost 7billion pounds in the crash.
And West Ham could be about to cease trading as their assets will be frozen by the government as part of the "wad war" with Iceland.
Interesting times in the richest league in the world...
Lifted from the Footballeconomy website:
THE FUTURE OF SCOTTISH FOOTBALL – 8/9/08
"In many ways Scottish football has never been in better shape. Per head of population, more of Scotland's inhabitants pay to watch top-flight football in their country than anywhere else in Europe. In 2004-5, 73 per cent of SPL players were Scottish. However, when one is talking about Scottish football, one naturally focuses on 'The Old Firm' because they dominate the game far more than the top four do in England. On the face of it, they are doing well. In Europe, Celtic reached the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time in 2007, losing to eventual winners AC Milan. Rangers reached the Uefa Cup Final. Rangers enjoy a bigger home attendance than Liverpool, while Celtic are 17th in Europe's rich list of clubs, the only operation in the top 20 from a minor domestic league outside of England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
Nevertheless, small Premiership teams like Wigan and Fulham with less than 20,000 fans can easily outspend Celtic and Rangers because of television money. As SPL champions for the third successive year, Celtic earned £1.5m from last year's deal with Setanta, whose coverage has received wide praise. The SPL has already agreed their next contract with Setanta which will start in 2010. It's worth £31m per season for the whole league compared with the £35m Derby County alone received for finishing bottom of the Premiership. It's total value is four per cent of the £775m Premiership deal. The Old Firm need somehow to get in a virtuous circle: they need success in Europe to be able to spend money, but they have to succeed in Europe to have the money to spend. Moreover, there is always the risk that Scotland could lose one of its two Champions League places if its Uefa coefficient falls.
So what's the answer? The Old Firm would like to be in the Premiership, but the Premiership doesn't want them. The one thing they would bring is a massive international support base at a time when that is becoming more important to the Premiership. But their presence would do nothing to help the bottom line of the leading clubs, while those down the league would not want two new competitors. In the early days of this page, we reported on the idea of an Atlantic League which would bring together some of the less important European football countries such as Holland, Portugal and Scotland. Uefa is talking informally to Belgium and the Netherlands about a new league, but that is hardly likely to involve Scotland. The Scandinavian Royal League, a winter competition, was a flop.
Investors from the Middle East and elsewhere are unlikely to be attracted to Scotland while there are still plenty of interesting English clubs potentially on the market. Glasgow is a much more attractive city than when I lived there nearly forty years ago, but it is not a world city like London, nor does it have the football glamour of Manchester. In financial terms, Celtic are the stronger club, making an annual profit of £10-£15m. But if they did pull away financially from Rangers, the Old Firm rivalry would be weakened and that is really the mainstay of Scottish football."
AAAAHHHHHHHH
It's all clear now....
To all you doubters who don't beleive Mr Murray will sort out the finance for the new 'bigotdome,' doubt no more!
Irrefutible proof of his new money making scheme is here, AND he's called in the favours of the Police in this one...

Anyone noticed how Rangers have been saying that Glasgow City Council will "transfer" the land around Ibrox to Rangers, but the Council themselves say they will sell "at market rates".
Now if Ibrox is worth £100million, the surrounding land must be worth a fortune too, no?
Italiabhoy 8.43
I was just thinking the same thing.
Can anyone shed some light on what Rangers are having to pay for this land?
If they are being gifted it,then why?
Wouldn't the tax payer be getting ripped off?
If Rangers are being gifted land worth millions of pounds,it is scandalous.
It will be interesting to see what Ibrox is valued at ,for the next set of accounts.
I know that in my area, residential house prices have dropped a staggering 20% between August 07 and August 08.
Some experts are estimating a further 20% drop in the next year.
Whilst residental and commercial property do vary in value, the trend's ,as to whether prices are increasing or decreasing tend to be quite similar.
If a chartered surveyor was to accurately show the vast depreciation in the value of Ibrox.I think that this would make Rangers insolvent.
Rangers certainly would not have the same level of mythical equity, that allows there current level of leverage on there debt.
One thing that would help them massively ,would be a gift of land at values without planning permission, that they then obtained planning permission on.
I smell a scandal here.
This needs investigating.
Italiabhoy and eventheolivesarebleeding,
I hope someone can explain the conundrum. It has been concerning since I caught the item on BBC Scotland yesterday evening , where they referred to the land being transferred to Murray's Mob. Yesterday there was reference on here to the Council saying otherwise. Can anyone clarify matters?
Kitalba, was great to watch that Dundee/Hearts match as a `neutral`. Was also good to see some players on the losing side, like Sandy Clark, what was he like in those shorts! Also to see John Brown playing for Dundee, and still ending up on the losing side!! That wasn`t oor Tosh playing full back for Dundee, was it?
question for the scottish media
hypothetical situation but not far fetched
if Chelsea play in Edinburgh and their fans wreck parliament square and the royal mile, leave a mountain of sewage and urinate over monuments of historical importance and abuse the locals whilst singing sectarian songs against john knox
If they turn up in Glasgow a couple of months later, wreck George Sq, thousands of them riot , attack the police and leave a trail of destruction all over the city
follow that up with anti scottish racist taunts and abuse at every subsequent game , followed by a life threatening attack on Alex McLeish, just because he's scottish
would the media pass it off as banter
and if roman abramovich's response was that we should be more worried about being overweight
would that be acceptable
or would they run front page stories about john terry's bentley getting scratched

You have asked the key question. A retail, concert and hotel complex in that part of Glasgow cannot possibly be a commercial success at this time, even if Rangers could come up with the capital required.
Mr Murray would be better off attempting to establish a chain of Icelandic-themed restaurants around the City of London.
Belatedly, many thanks to all those who responded to my request for advice about going into the MU end at Old Trafford. There doesn't seem to be a right answer to this, but I think I would feel safer if I was going with a MU fan and not just 2 Celtic fans. :(
I wish I was this risk averse about investments.

Celtic_First - Another factor, who would take their family shopping or want to live in this area when Rangers are playing a home game? 30,000 Rangers fans trawling through the area every other saturday/sunday, with their current culture and reputaton, would make the place a no-go zone.
And it only takes one bad result and every shop window in town is smashed. Also, heaven help the local Cancer Research shop if they should accept the slightest donation from any Celtic fund.
I run a heavy risk of losing this post in the "new article posted" tumbleweed scenario.

LEGEND SID KNOWS HIS HISTORY....
Legendary darts commentator Sid Waddell may have inadvertently alienated himself from some of the follow-followers of a Scottish football club by giving viewers a couple of lines of the Rebel song 'Kevin Barry' at last night's World Grand Prix Darts in Dublin....
Waddell, who has a degree in modern history and who's notable quotes include "They are sweating like a couple of swamp donkeys" and "He's got the hand-to-eye coordination of a rattlesnake" was commentating on the match between Canadian World Champion John Part and Dublin's Jacko Barry in the City West Hotel when he came out with a couple of lines from the song which luckily for us were spoken and not sung as I don't think Sid is much of a singer....
Surely nobody would complain about something like that would they? Well you never know because recently fans complained to Coronation Street bosses about this line, "I could no more be interested in Rosie Webster than I could support Glasgow Rangers" which was spoken by Corrie character Tony Gordon....
Because of the complaints ITV received from disgruntled Gers fans the scripts of future episodes were changed.

morning bhoys and ghirls am a new bhoy on this but after reading a story in the scottish hun today i felt so angered that i have decided to open a online petition to ask all celtic fans to bhoycott this paper. The artical is writen on page 6 by Ally Ross (wonder what team he supports) a vile and bigot of a man (and i use this term "man" losely) who in his view has just caused young James Mc Carthy a talent in the game of football for Hamilton to become one of te most hated men in scotland and all because his nation snubbed him when they thought he was not good enough only to come running back with their tails between there legs when they realised there mistake. i urge all supporters to stand up and be counted and snub this paper. Just incase you have forgot ally the bigot ross we had 2 doctors from this country who worked in our hospitals and took our hard earn money and tried to KILL our people and i do not see you writing about them in hatered.

This fool Ally Ross who I am led to believe is a television critic (so his opinion should be ignored in any case) also states that Aiden McGeady would have offered his support in making his decision. How on earth would he know if Aiden had even spoken to young McCarthy?
Like I say, best ignored.
sumobhoy67,
welcome to CQN. You can't beat it.
As for Ally Ross, he is an Aberdeen fan if my memory is correct. He is usually on the Hawksbee & Jacobs Show on TalkSport every Friday afternoon. He's only a T.V. critic , so what does he know about football.
Hail Hail
well lets hope all scottish fans think like you and the boy is not subjected to the same abuse i have heard mcgeady get when he goes to other grounds its not a artical to be ignored when we as fans are dragged up time and time again for what we sing on the stands. its time that people like ross should stop writing vile hatered in there rag papers for moron fans who use this as fuel to attack players like brown lennon mcgeady and even magregor.
I thought we already had a Bhoycott of the Sun & Record!
When did it stop! And why wasn’t I told???
sumobhoy67,
as for James McCarthy becoming one of the most hated men in Scotland, only in this crappy wee bigoted country would he get pelters for making the choice to play for the Republic of Ireland.
All these scribes forget about all the players who picked Scotland over the country of their birth. i.e. Goram,Gough,Elliott,McCall, etc, etc.
It doesn't matter what any plonker in the press writes about him, as soon as he plays at Govan Zoo he will get slaughtered by the degenerates who congregate there.
Hail Hail
I've just heard on Clyde 1 news that SMEATO, the man who single handedly saved everyone from the Glasgow Airport bombers, (what do you mean it's not true ?) is in hospital after having a life threatening asthma attack.
Talk about a drain on the NHS resources.
Possilbhoy :-)
Discovered via last nights YooTuubes.
One for those reminiscing last week.
Celtic Park In The 70s
Monrning all,
I see some earlier discussion of the Ibrox land issue.
Murray's mention of "transferring" land is totally bogus. I'm not sure whether this was a direct quote or a newspaper interpretation.
The report approved by the Executive Committee of Glasgow City Council is very clear - they have given authority for land to be sold to RFC at market value.
Estadio Nacional:
Here's a good wee one for you.
Jimmy Johnstone-Passing Time
I'm glad you guys enjoyed the Albert Kidd show as much as I did.

Not read the artical but the fella is an Aberdeen supporter and had a refreshingly honest and scaving rant about rangers on Talksport after Manchester and went on about how much he wanted Celtic to win the league after that. Big Scotland supporter though.
Still, he works for the sun so cannot take his comments seriously.
McCathy picked the team that was interested in him and the team he wanted to play for, very simple. Accies gave up on contacting the SFA to get them to look at the boy early on, thay tried to get him to play for Scotland for the good of Scottish football, the SFA never replied or went to see him until it was too late.
Shocking that Burley saw him for the first time last week, the SFA are getting what they deserve on this one.
It says a lot that a boy playing for Motherwell, ex ranger McLean I believe is almost unknown despite the same situation where he has opted to play for the north of Ireland.
Accies have two games at Ipox this month, its predictable that the twisted riot starters will target the 17 year old.
Wish I had an International team I could fully upport.
Another wee post for Jinky, because he is worth all the memories.
Jinky is Johnny Cash
And one for our keeper
JOHNNY THOMPSON

I have it saved. I was going to post it last night. I liked what he had to say about the Late Great Mr. Jock Stein.
Actually I'll go get it now.
