Scott Brown Clydesdale Bank Player of the Month

| | Comments (1017)
Congratulations to Scott Brown, Clydesdale Bank Player of the Month for October.

I think it is fair to say that Scott found the move to a massive club like Celtic a bigger challenge than he was prepared for last season, but recent performances, including that against Kilmarnock on Wednesday evening, have seen him in the form of his Celtic career so far.

There is still plenty to achieve, but I am delighted for the player at this award.

Really enjoyed your football of late.

Richly deserved Scott Brown

Well done Skoosh.

Just as an aside..............I am amazed at the number of English people that I have spoken to recently who think that Celtic only sign Catholics and Rangers only sign Non-Catholics and this has been said to me without exception !

A lot of work still needs doing down here, but with the English media's total dis-interest in all things Scottish, I can't see how this mind-set can be changed, but it does go to show that we are "them" in many people's eyes !

Ps, This is well worth 10 minutes of anybody's time.

Paul67 - "yesterday I decided to devise a plan to solve the country’s economic problems instead of reading CQN; managed it too, I wonder if the Chancellor reads CQN?"

So were you the genius behind the idea to "spend, spend, spend" our way out of recession?

Who inspired you most, Viv Nicholson or Zsa Zsa Murray?

From wednesdays match , Craig Levein, articulate and accurate as usual stated that Scott Brown had now also improved his "decision making".

Last season in my opinion he over ran the ball too much, and was too quick to get involved in battles in ever game. too easily distracted, but there were glimpses of something.

This season we see a more focused, determined and intelligent footballer emerging. He does have the skills and is now beginning to show the decision making required to make a difference to a game.

In the recent international I personally thought he was the stand out player for the Scots.

Another attribute I like is his support of team mates, there is no shouting, screaming moany face or hands in the air reaction (a la the other Scot McD)to a poor pass or a mistimed run, instead there is a clap of the hands a shout of encouragment or more likely a lung busting effort from him to recover his colleagues mistake.
The fire in the belly is getting redirected to winning for the team, in the right way.

The fans need to keep in context the personal tragedy the young man endured last year, and now give him the support to grow and florish in the hoops.

Which he most surely will.

Auldheid are you a conriocht?

From the last thread
I never have or ever will wear a poppy. My granda's brother spent 28 years in the army but I will say my own prayers for him as I pray for my famiy dead every day of the year. However I have no objections to anyone else wearing a poppy but to make it an offical thing at Celtic Park when we have Japanese and German players as well as a sizable Irish support is madness, and as has been witnessed here a receipe for division.

With respect to you Scottish bhoys, you can never understand how much the poppy has been politized in NI or you have never been held for hours by the British Army just because of your name, they have not killed any of your family or raided your house in the middle of the might and numerous other things.

I forgive all that happened in NI over the last 40 years but I don't have to stand up in support of them.
I don't know if there will be a minute's silence at CP next home game but I won't be observing it, if I attend the game I won't be in the park until its over.

Perhaps the Irish support should stay at home next Sunday, I for one am considering it.

Well done to Scott Brown. Now we have all had our say maybe we should get back to discussing football and our team

Well done broonie

Outstanding young man

Am delighted for Scott Brown. Apart from Lee Naylor, he probably takes more stick than anyone else at the club from the fans and, like Gary Caldwell before him, he's risen above it to be the player I always thought he would be. He's been outstanding in the last three Scotland games, and has now proven his worth to (some of) his doubters in SPL as well. Now if he could just convince that idiot that sits in front of me at Celtic Park who gives him pelters for 90 minutes every week...

I'm still trying to work out why none of the three men at the bus stop called a taxi. They could even have shared it. There would still have been space for a wolf in the back.

Is this the Phil Spector program you were talking about? I've now downloaded it to watch later.

Arena: The Agony and Ecstasy of Phil Spector

Can I just add a comment on any booing on Sunday, a purely personal perspective. My father joined the Royal Marine Commandoes in 1938. He served until 1946 as he was a career soldier. He remained in the Royal Marine Association all his life and when he died (almost 20 years ago now) he was buried with the Royal Marine flag over his coffin. As a member of the RMA he paraded at George Square every remembrance Sunday with his colleagues, as the years rolled on there were fewer and fewer of them. It was a big day in our household.

He was also one of the biggest Celtic supporters you could meet, he gave me Celtic and I am grateful. He was also a great supporter of the Irish right of self determination and disliked the bitter huns he came across in his life as much as we do.

On Remembrance Sunday, I pay my respect to my Dad and his colleagues that I grew up respecting. I will do so on Sunday.

So if you feel you can't keep quiet on Sunday at Tynecastle, stay outside until the minutes silence is over then come in, for my sake and that of the many Celtic supporters who have loved ones who server in the forces, particularly WW2.

Hartleysmy hero ,

There is no minutes silence.

Lets be clear.

pablophanque at 1.07pm,
I work in England and have done for nearly 20 years, having spent some considerable time in most of the major cities ( though mostly the North West ) I have never heard anyone say anything about Celtic in that context.
I would say that the English ( or certainly most inhabitants in England) view of RFC is that they are an establishment based protestant organisation who live in a bygone age of British supremacist, anti-catholic views ( as opposed to the citizens of Manchester who just see them as a bunch of rioting football hooligans who are the scum of the earth)

My wee student has gone back to Kilwinning for the weekend. She is really making excellent progress and has lost much of her irrational dread of windscreen wipers, or 'the Devils Eyelashes' as she insisted on calling them.

Well done to Scott Brown definitely deserved. Playing like the player we know he is. With him, Caldwell and Hinkel all improving, does it not confirm that sometimes, we are too quick to judge players and we underestimate how much pressure is on them when they join one of the biggest clubs in the world !

Are'nt we all?

There's a term here I don't recognise - 'the irish support', we're the Celtic support.

There is no minute's silence next week so it's hypothetical but I think the Celtic support would behave as the Celtic support do. If there is away to protest correctly we will find it avoiding any offence to others, unlike our neighbours. My personal view would be that Remembrance Sunday offers everyone an opportunity to remember their war dead, irrespective of whether that is the relation of Scott Brown, Paddy McCourt, Shunsuke Nakamura, Massimo Donati or Andreas Hinkel.

IT’S gone way past a bad joke.

It’s gone way past the point of no return.

Mike McCurry is way past his sell-buy date.

He was once one of the finest referees in the country.

Now he is a comic figure, blundering from one hapless mistake to the next.

Once is understandable, twice is forgivable, but beyond that and it becomes wholly unacceptable.

And, for me, last Saturday was the final straw.

Kilmarnock v Falkirk at Rugby Park.

Jim Jefferies’ home side are throwing everything at the Bairns in a bid to get back on level terms.

But John Hughes’ visitors break and at the other end Graham Barrett cuts across Killie’s Jamie Hamill inside the box.

There is no contact, no foul committed — Barret simply throws himself to the ground.

Everyone inside Rugby Park could see it, yet somehow McCurry points to the spot and awards Falkirk a penalty.

Bairns star Scott Arfield scores and it’s game over.

Game over for poor old Mike, more like.

I simply could not believe the decision and McCurry has no excuses.

He could see the incident clearly, no one was blocking his line of vision.

He must have seen there was no contact, yet he was pointing to the spot before Barrett even hit the deck.

It was a shocking decision and the latest in a growing catalogue of cock-ups.

When I was still playing Mike was up there with the best in the business.

You could approach him, you could talk to him, you could tell he had an understanding of the players and how the game was played.

Of course, he’s now that bit older, but that’s still no excuse.

The reputation he worked so hard to build is crumbling before his eyes and that’s why I urge him to go now.

He has three years to go before he hits retirement age, but I honestly can’t see him officiating at the highest level for another three weeks!

It’s time for Mike to do the decent thing and retire.

And if he doesn’t see that then the powers-that-be at Hampden should take the decision out of his hands.

He’s become a washed-up joke.

Everything has snowballed since he took charge of that infamous match between Rangers and Dundee United at Ibrox last May.

The conspiracy theorists had a field day as he chopped off a perfectly good United goal and denied the Tannadice men a clear-cut penalty.

Of course, those weren’t his first high-profile howlers of the campaign.

Back in January he’d allowed Barry Ferguson’s opener in Gers’ CIS Cup semi-final clash against Hearts to stand, despite the Rangers captain using an arm to control the ball. But for me, McCurry’s refereeing career began to unravel with those revelations about his private life.

He went from the back pages to the front pages and he simply hasn’t coped.

I don’t care who you are or what job you’re in. If your love life is splattered across the front pages, if suddenly the whole world knows your business, then life as you know it has changed forever.

You somehow have to find the mental strength to get through it.

You have your day-to-day life to live and you have to find a way to function.

McCurry hasn’t dealt with any of that.

He’s carried his off-the-field problems on to the pitch and as a result his performances have suffered.

McCurry is now in danger of being remembered as one of the worst refs Scotland has ever produced and he doesn’t deserve that.

He’s better than that.

But week after week now it’s mistake after mistake with him. The situation is ridiculous.

If the ordinary Joe in the street had made as many blunders his work would have sent him packing months ago.

That’s life. That’s reality.

McCurry has too many things on his mind at the moment and it’s clouding his judgement on the field of play.

We are not blessed with top refs in Scotland, so we cannot afford to continue with one who is not pulling his weight.

His decisions are changing games and costing teams points.

That is unacceptable in my eyes.

I liked Mike. I rated him among our top whistlers.

But those days are long gone and if he does not want to damage his image further he should just leave quietly by the back door.

It’s time for him to hang up his whistle.

Not just for his sake, but for the sake of everyone in Scottish football.

Not only is there no minutes silence, fans are not being asked to wear poppies either.

Not much left for fans to get their knickers in a twist then.

However I'm sure someone will find a bit of elastic to stretch further interesting discussion around.

Well done to Scott (Skoosh) Brown, well deserved and loves playing in the Hoops, as was quite evident with his beaming smile after scoring against Hibs.

Rock On Scott

Some great debate on here re the Poppies and glad that we can all agree/disagree without drawing swords as such. Some atrocities from all sides we should remember for whatever reason but pleased we are all mindful of an inividuals opinion. No more from me on this.

Absolutely delighted for Scott Brown, I always thought his not so good performances were as simple as trying too hard to please and glad the coaching he received slowly moulded him in an obvious positive way, THE CELTIC WAY. If anyone will want to stick it up the Hearts this Sunday it'll "oor Broonie".

why can't we simply have the minute's silence half way through the first half of a home game as we normally do?

oneantonrogan, I'm not the idiot who sits in front of you at Celtic Park. I'm the idiot who sits elsewhere. I never give Celtic players pelters but as I've said before, and I know Big Liam will disagree, Scott Brown for me is better on the right side of midfield as opposed to CM.

I'm delighted that he has won the award and I hope it's the first of many.

This question is the sole Criteria that should be used in the Celtic Team Selection Process.

An answer, in the negative... can be accepted... ONCE..and ONCE ONLY.

However, the implication contained in that answer, should be considered to be an Official Warning...to the answerer.

If one went thru the Present Celtic Eleven.. here are how the answers would stack up...that is, according to me, who in this town, is the sole arbiter:

"Man attacked schoolgirl with iPod"

That is, he used the iPod as an offensive weapon (probably had Phil Colins on at the time) rather than he attacked a schoolgirl who had an iPod. The description "5 seconds of madness" was used so presumably not listening Phil after all.

Auldheid, just came online. How do you know there will be no minute's silence if you don't mind me asking ? Has there been a statement ? I hope you are correct as it was an issue which was causing a lot of division among the support.

Funny how poppygate has come about just when Rangers are under the cosh regarding TFS. Wouldn't be surprised if the boys from Media House had made a wee phone call to one of the brethern for them to propose it at a committee meeting of Poppyscotland. We're in the midst of a dirty war after all.

The support must stay united at all times and refuse to let some slick operators drive a wedge between us. ( And between some of us and the club.) The pressure is on the FOD. Let's keep it there.

Fine Girl Y'Ar

According to this we better just hide:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2008/oct/31/spl-rangers-celtic-barry-ferguson

Strange, not one creative player is mentioned there!

Nothing to fear!

Respect?

Who is it the boo bhoys might be affecting where there is a silence at a game(pick any occasion)?

IMHO observing any silence firstly and foremost is a matter of respect to Celtic FC. A silence properly observed or disrupted is only ever reflected on Celtic FC, not on individuals or groups in the ground.

Just about every non-Celtic silence is a challenge. The challenge is whether the club, Celtic FC, will emerge with its reputation in tact.

On such occasions, your opinion as an individual supporter is unimportant and irrelevant, for it is the Club, Celtic FC, that is judged not you.

Silence does not mean assent. It is perfectly possible to be silent and personally disagree with the issue in hand. Your silence is required for the club to protect it, not by the issue at hand. History is full of examples of silent protest.

Be sure there will be nothing that sticks in the craw of the crawers more than having to praise Celtic FC for its decorum in such matters.

People will be able to come on here and argue the rights and wrongs of each individual case which will be futile in achieving a consensus. Just remember, observing a silence is respecting your club, Celtic FC. You are neither asked to nor are making any other statement (irresepctive of how others may wish to interpret this). Anyone who brings the club into disrepute by failing to be able to control themselves for 60 seconds must accept that they disrespect their club Celtic FC and are happy for it to be thrown to the hyenas in the LLL who will, you can be assured, have a feeding frenzy the likes of which you want but can't get for TFS.

So stand up and respect the champions.

We have nothing to fear but fear itself!

The Dubai Mafia. . .

Just to demonstrate that Greenock possesses wit and not just half wits (new readers see earlier post), here's a wee story from the shipyards long before the devil woman got her hands on them.

My father served his time as a joiner in the early fifties in Lithgow's. At that time, you were not allowed a tea break in the morning, but everybody took an unofficial one at ten o'clock anyway. Working in the joiners' shop, nobody wore a watch for fear of damage, so they had to rely on the "big clock" that stood way above the yard. However, you could not see it from the joiners' shop, so a lot of guesswork re the time was required.

One morning, old Johnny McCready who had worked there for decades, was going to the top of the yard where you could see the clock. Since it felt about 10 o'clock, one of the guys asked him to shout down the time so they could get the flasks out .Now, over the years Johnny had had his fair share of accidents with saws and so forth, and had fingers and bits of fingers missing from both hands.

That morning on seeing the clock, Johnny shouted back down to his workmates "10 o'clock....10 o'clock" Of course with the noise of the shipyard, nobody could hear him so Johnny held up both hands with his fingers splayed open to get the message over.

"God almighty" said a workmate. "Half past four already"

It got here in one piece just about. Many thanks again and hope to see you in BBs before we embarrass Swalex

Well done Scott Brown. Very well deserved award. He has been one of our standout players so far this season along with Samaras and Caldwell. He seems to link very well with Aiden, Shaun and Skippy and when those four are exchanging passes and moving for each other, our football is a joy to watch.

Paul: You said you could make a case that the forthcoming SPL fixtures are more important than the Champions League ones. I think that case is already open and shut. We have to win the SPL this season if what I read about next year's Ch Lg qualifiers is accurate.

While the league winners go straight into the group stages, the 2nd place team could face the 2nd placed Russian, Dutch, Czech, Romanian or Ukranian teams. If they clear that hurdle they could be drawn against the 4th placed English or Spanish teams or 3rd in Italy or Germany. If this is right the SPL becomes even more of a priority.

Beating the Jambos this Sunday would give us our 7th straight league win and our 9th straight domestic win. It would give us two weeks of home games where we could put Rangers under a bit of pressure and it would clear one of the most difficult fixtures from our schedule. It would also prove that results and performances of recent weeks can be maintained in what is one of the most difficult away ties outside Ibrox.

Mon the hoops!

Craiginho

Kojo, aye, Jack’s phrase is always insightful.

As for the man in question, I noted a considerably improvement in his performance AFTER his goal against Hibernian; perhaps confidence was all that was needed.

Don’t worry about Molly, his off-the-ball work is doing a trick.

Dobbo, apart from the obvious, I have no info on where we will be looking in January. It will reflect perceived weaknesses at the time.

Craiginho, agree. Scottish football is in vicious/virtuous circle territory when it comes to European qualification.

A FEW VIEWPOINTS.
In my lifetime, Jimmy Johnstone deserves the accolade of being The Greatest Celt ever. Jimmy deserves it for his astonishing dribbling skills, his bravery both during and after his carreer and his obvious and continued love of Celtic.
Danny McGrain deserves to be recognised as Celtic`s most consistently superb player and possibly our only player who was, for several seasons, the best in the world in his position.
Henrick Larson was , by miles, our best overseas player and our best player since Dalglish.

Sorry John,
I`ve got a ticket for the All Blacks game which means I will miss the Motherwell game (why Swalex?) but will be in BB`s for the next home , Saturday game.
Had to change my sign in as I had PC problems (called them Huns)

Jim, I meant the Man U game and Ferguson. I too will miss the Motherwell game.

just been told i have a ticket for sunday which is great news.

i think it very very unlikely anyone would disrupt a minutes silence.

The black and tans may have fought in world war one but they have no right to respect.

That aside the fallen of world war 1 and 2 are not the scum who patroled the streets of derry or belfast.

I don't forsee any issues if they have a minutes silence.

Then we can sing the bhoys to victory.

Good news...both Mick and Naka trained today. Gordon says if Caddis were 6'2" he'd play every game.

Hotsmokedsalmond,

I was just telling one of my grandsons last week that my 4 best Celtic players from different eras were Jinky, Kenny, Henrik and Naka. And they all scored special goals against the huns too !

Jinky's in the penalty shoot-out against Rangers at Hampden when the ball was on the spot and he ran full pelt from the halfway line and without stopping blasted it an inch under the crossbar. 1974 I think.

Kenny's penalty at Ibrox in 1971 when he stopped in his run-up to tie his lace before sending the Girvan lighthouse the wrong way. (I did say LIGHThouse there, didn't I ?)

Henrik's all-time best-ever in 2000 when he nutmegged Bert and dinked it over Klos in the 6-2 game.

And lastly, Naka's wonderful banana shot in April this year which helped to send us on our way to 3 in a row.

Fine Girl Y'Ar.

Gallowgate,
Thanks for the memories. I, too, am a big fan of Naka and am certain that, if he goes in January, many who have described him as a luxury will realise what an essential he really has been.

Glasgow Celtic Champions

oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

thismancraig, aren't newspapers supposed to be "objective" !!??

Ferguson returns to super-charge Rangers' engine room With the return of Barry Ferguson, Rangers have midfield strength that Celtic can only dream about (wit !!??)
Barry Ferguson could return this weekend to revitalise Rangers.

As Celtic's worries edge towards injury crisis stage, Rangers fans are preparing for the latest welcome to their prodigal son.

Shunsuke Nakamura, Glenn Loovens, Georgios Samaras, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Stephen McManus are among Gordon Strachan's walking wounded. McManus should recover for Sunday's trip to face Hearts but the others represent a significant combined loss. With Manchester United just over the horizon, Strachan can perhaps bemoan the same poor fortune that saw Rangers lose a series of players to injury last season.(musta missed that ! Fergiehun receiving dubious injections all season notwithstanding !)

Walter Smith, conversely, should unleash his captain, Barry Ferguson, for the first time this season as Inverness visit Ibrox. Ferguson turns 31 in February and is therefore no longer the youngster everyone fondly (beginning to wretch here now !) he redeemers making a first-team debut as an 18-year-old.

Whether or not Ferguson's game has modified much in the intervening 12 years is open to debate. What is certain, though, is that the captain could and should,(beginning to see where this "reporter" is coming from now !) if he can remain fit, be the driving force behind Rangers' bid to wrest the title from Celtic's grasp. Towards the end of last season, particularly in Uefa Cup matches as Rangers marched towards the Manchester final, Ferguson displayed the very form people recall from his injury-free days. For too long, however, he has been dogged by, and played on through, everything from niggles to significant damage.

The freshness of Smith's midfield, supplied by the arrival of Pedro Mendes, Maurice Edu and Steven Davis in the aftermath of an embarrassing European exit in Lithuania, contrasts markedly with Strachan's issues in that area. Nakamura's injury aside, Aiden McGeady and Shaun Maloney have flitted in and out of the team,(so choosing the onform player is now "flitting is it ??) Paul Hartley is apparently deemed worthy of only cameo appearances from the substitutes' bench and Barry Robson has been utilised as an emergency left-back. Only Scott Brown has flourished in the Celtic engine room this season.(and which one of "theirs" would you take over ours !?)

Mendes and Davis, meanwhile, have been among Scotland's most impressive performers (this'll be the same Mendes that hasn't played for most of last month then will it ?) while Kevin Thomson, maligned in many quarters, has also produced his best Rangers form. Smith says a "small tactical change" is all that will be required to facilitate Ferguson's return alongside those three regular performers; Celtic should (in your twisted little mind you mean !!??) and will be worried by such a midfield four as Rangers prepare for seven SPL matches in November.(unless they ask to extend November that is !!)

The key to Ferguson's influence as he moves into his 32nd year will be discipline.(which he hasn't, or ever will have be able to control) Heavily criticised by former manager Paul Le Guen on account of his failure to remain in position on the field, the Scotland international has never displayed a willingness to allow play to rage on around him.(fist, boot, head, you name it, he'll use it to stop whomever and by however !)

But having only just recovered from serious ankle surgery in the summer - he also went under the knife two years ago - and following the knee damage incurred during his brief flirtation with Blackburn Rovers, now is the time to ensure he remains an influential part of Rangers for the next four years at least.(for this "journo !) For that to happen, Ferguson must appreciate the merits of those around him rather than get caught up in personal crusades on a weekly basis. There is no questioning the mutually - and nationally, given Ferguson's status as the captain of Scotland - beneficial nature of such a policy.(couldn't keep it down any longer !!! Embdy know how to get diced carrot out of a keyboard :o( !)

Scott Brown wins POTM Award.....Hmmmm....Congrats to him and hopefully one of many.

I doubt it would have happened if Mr Strachan had listened to the advice on here.....What was it "Gordon Strachan is the last man in Glasgow to learn......".

I too was amongst the sceptics. I am pleased he is finding his best form. Long may it continue. I'm sure he will be desperate to keep it going against the Hertz on Sunday.

I have 2 main concerns re the proposed reaction issue of the minutes silence on Sunday.

Firstly, we were absolutely correct (and joined by the rest of the world) in our indignation of the booing of the minutes silence of JPII. I believe that if we have negative reaction would be hypocritical.

Secondly, most of those being remembered are ordinary men forced into fighting and certainly for WWII a far greater ideological enemy than we have ever faced before or since. I am glad that there were those brave enough to fight then that I have my freedom.

This is in no way to excuse the actions of the British Army in Ireland or anywhere around the world where they have tortured or killed th innocent indigenous population. But we have to distinctly separate the 2.

We should ensure our ire is turned on those at teh other end on Sunday who have not quite reached as far as most on the evolutionary ladder.

Fur embdy wot missed it............................

Wilma: ...... anyway you seem very happy today, Sir Gordon, like the cat who got the cream

GD: Yes, today's my last day on the Worcestershire Sauce Crisps anal diet

W: And the whiff of smoked haddock is begining to recede by the week

GD: The credit for the cure goes to Brother Brown Browning. Ensure he receives complimentary tickets for tomorrow's Hampden Homecoming Halloween Hooly

W: Who else merits a place on the guest list, Sir ?

GD: Fridge magnate, Willie Chaughey. Ensure the chill chief receives a VIP invitation for him and his associates.

W: Any others ?

GD: Let me think, Wilma..... Tom Craigson deserves a pair for booking Japanese bad-bhoy, Suzuki MacNamura. Hold on a moment - Wilma, check if that dead-ball-flukester has Scottish ancestry.

W: He doesn't. I investigated already, did the family-tree research.

GD: He doesn't qualify ? With a name like MacNamura ?

W: He's Japo-Irish

GD: What ? Another one ? Like Seansushi Macushla. There's something fishy going on here, Wilma.

W: Tell me about it.

GD: No, you tell me about it.

W(picks up her notes): Suzuki's grandfather, Mick MacNamura, was a Japanese Native American martial arts expert who settled in Limerick in 1916. He was involved in the Easter Rising Sun Rebellion. Cofflick-side, obviously.

GD: A Mick-Mack Indian ?

W: A Limerick man of oriental culture, Sir Gordon; a sort-of Sean East of Garryowen. There's a short verse about him here :

" There was an Indian-Jap-Paddy called Mick
Whose family emigrated to Limerick
His grandson Suzuki
Could hit yir bahooky
Wi a 70-yarder free-kick "

Anyone else for the guestlist, Sir Gordon ?

GD: Is anyone in Scotland eligible for Scotland ?

W: Only Loyola Novo

GD: Invite her. Courier her two complimentery tickets immediately.

W: Loyola is male, Sir Gordon. He has stars tattooed on his arm.

GD: In that case he probably qualifies for the USA instead. Invite US Presidential hopeful Osama Bin Whatsisname.

W: I'm afraid Osama is confined to barracks. What about the other one ?

GD: Clint Billton ?

W: No, John McKane. He's got to have Scottish heritage.

GD: McKane's too old to play for Scotland, Wilms

W: He's not as old as Presbyterian Journal and Wavy Deer. Good lord - will I invite Sir Murray David ?

GD: On no account has David to be invited. He would upset the dookin-fur-applecart. Our job primarily is to entertain Willie Chaughey and his Cofflick companions.

W: In that case the 200-strong guestlist is complete.

GD: Good work, Wilma. Advise final numbers to Brother Ramsay Gordon for catering purposes. Happy Halloween. Will you be in fancy dress, Wilma? I'd love to see you in a ....

W: ... I wouldn't like to spoil the surprise, Sir Gordon. Good things come to he who waits.....

Why are people presuming there will be a minutes silence at tynecastle? Next sunday 9th is remembrance sunday.

tooheys_new............THERE'S NO MINUTES SILENCE !!!!!!!!!!!

pablophanque

Ps, sorry fer shoutin'

Pablo, stop mumbling! Is there a minute's slience or not?

Let`s have a minute`s `slience` for Cadizzy....or even from!

Pablo

That was my minutes silence in typing mode

Gallowgate

I picked that up from a statement by oneanotoinrogan backed up by another by Big Liam.

Next came common sense. Why would Celtic or any club for that matter set themselves up as an Aunt Sally? Applause has been the way of avoiding past criticism, why go back to something that is inviting criticism?

The Daily Record article makes no mention of a minutes silence. I imagine that had they requested that the clubs would have said "mair bother than its worth, but we'll wear poppies"

The minute's silence is a meaning some read into the article. A great example of making something up and then acting as if it were true - when it wisnae.

Daily Record

SPL sides to mark Remembrance Day with poppy shirts
Oct 29 2008

EVERY SPL team will wear special Remembrance Day jerseys next week.

The tribute will take place after poppy appeal organisers wrote to the 12 clubs asking them to wear the one-off kit - and all agreed.

Some clubs will have a small red poppy woven in to team jerseys on the day. Others will make their own tribute with players sporting a stick-on poppy.

Referees, their assistants and fourth officials will also join in the tribute by wearing a poppy on their outfits.

The jerseys will be worn in SPL matches to be played over the weekend of November 8-9. Remembrance Sunday falls on November 9 this year.

A spokeswoman for Poppyscotland, who used to be known as the Earl Haig Fund Scotland, said: "All the SPL clubs are involved and all their players will wear the special Scottish poppy which will greatly increase public awareness of the poppy appeal."

Last year, Hearts wore a special strip when they played a Remembrance Day match against Aberdeen at Tynecastle.

The decision was taken to honour the players of the legendary Hearts squad of season 1914-15, who died in World War I.

The club's entire first team squad had enlisted with the 16th Royal Scots, a battalion known as McCrae's Own.

Seven died in service. The strip worn by the Hearts players in 2007 had the names of the dead - John Allan, James Boyd, Duncan Currie, Ernest Ellis, Thomas Gracie, James Speedie and Harry Wattie - embroidered into the sleeve. The jersey also had a poppy on the chest.

Remembrance Day commemorates the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians since World War I.

Poppyscotland support war veterans and their dependants in Scotland. Last year the appeal raised a record s1.76million.

Pablo,
How long is it then?

Clarification: I imagine that had PoppyScotland requested a minutes silence the clubs would have said "mair bother than its worth, but we'll wear poppies"

I am delighted that Skoosh has won this award and sure it will help his confidence and drive him onto even better performances.

I thought Gus MacPherson as manager of the month with 2 victories and a defeat in the SPL was a bad decision !!!!!!!!!!

weebobbycollins

I was falling into that trap until I read the DR article.Sometimes it pays to check the facts first but sometimes when you walk into the middle of a discussion the very fact that so many are wading in just makes you think there is actually something to wade into.

Pablo

I picked up the miutes silence from others. I had presumed the Farts had done so as they are not and home next week and they thought it would rile us.

Hopefully, there will be a hole host of silence from the home end for much of the game.

Not becoming of you gweedorebhoy. I hope others like me won't rise to your bait!!

Byraway..................whoever invented this MARS™ in a cup malarky his a loat tae answer fur !!!??? Ah blame Yclru for showin' me it in the furst place :o(

pablophanque

On Scott Brown: Glad to see him performing as his best Hibs form suggested he might.
Craig Levein was spot on when he pointed to Brown's better decision making. I watch a lot of good amateur football and what lets down a lot of good technical players is their decision making. It is no different at professionall level.

Auldheid

The record article says that some teams will wear a "stick on poppy"

Is a "stick on poppy" anything like a "stick on penalty" as we never get many of those either

Pablo

This journalist isn't usually so bad but I think midfield would feature rarely at the top of the 'we're all doomed' merchants!

As I said, Rangers midfield - when all are fit - remains limited due it's lack of creativity. Plan B remains 'Boydie might score'!

Stick-on poppies will surely just lead to a littered pitch like last year when everyone wore yellow Madeleine McCann ribbons that all fell off as soon as they started moving.

Steelica, I don’t think my earlier assessment of Scott Brown was wrong – and still think it’s a little early to proclaim the transformation complete.

Jinkysboy, aye, but Gus deserves it for beating Rangers and putting Celtic back at the top of the league.

DBBIA, I don't think there was a cup anywhere near that two :o)))

Back on football matters, congrats to Scott Brown. £4m player blah blah ... We bought him for his potential which he is now beginning to show.

Important game on Sunday. Three points would be a great result and keep us where we belong: on top of the league.

I thought of our man Scott on listening to the parable of the barren fig tree from two Sundays ago. The owner was sick of it as it had produced no fruit for too long and asked his gardener to cut it down. The gardener had other ideas and pleaded with his boss - ' I will dig around it, manure it and prune it - give it another season and see if it produces fruit next time around.' I believe the owner agreed to the gardener's request........

HOWIVVVVVVVVVA

we are not informed as to the fig tree's fate, did it pass muster the following season ?

Broon has not produced, has had manure thrown in his direction and buds are....... er..... shooting but we still await THE HARVEST.

thomthetim, from last thread,i'm sure, like everyone else here, you have enjoyed,on many occasions,Henriks goal against rangers, you know the one, goalkeeper punts a hopeful ball up the park,Chris Sutton bravely holds off the atentions of amoruso, and heads down to the feet of the onrushing HL,his actions thereafter are the stuff of legend, climaxing in his,sublime,glorious,magnificent,awe-inspring,chip over the despairing claws of the rangers goalie, would you suggest that the goalie, you remember him,the one who originally punted the ball upfield,is to be praised for his part in the goal?Of course i write with my tongue in my cheek and mean no offence,i am willing to agree to differ as to MD's contribution the other night, that after all,is what makes for lively and healthy debate, but to give him credit for a goal which was scored after two corner kicks,is,at best tenuous.if you thought he had a good match, then you are right, and nothing i,or anyone else can say will change that, just don't feel that your case for prasing him in this particular instance,is valid.Having said all that,i hope you are at BB's next Saturday, perhaps we can debate it over a pint of black stout.

Dear CQNers,

Could I ask everyone to read the following and decide for themselves whether to sign or not. I don't really want to start any discussion about such a topic.

I have been approached by a friend of mine, Dennis Edney. Dennis hails from Lochee and is a big Celtic supporter. He is now a Canadian lawyer. Currently, Dennis is in Guantanamo Bay, defending a young boy, called Omar Khadr. Dennis, I think, I'm right in saying is the first non-US lawyer who has been given permission to appear before the Supreme Court in Washington DC, because of this case.
He writes: At this time, there are groups of Canadians across the country trying to put pressure on our Federal Government to stand up for Omar and demand a fair trial and his repatriation back to Canada.
If this issue is of concern to you, I ask you to consider signing the following petition. It is one of a number that I believe are circulating in the country.

www.petitiononline.com/omar567/petition.html

I have already emailed Dennis asking whether being outside Canada made any difference. He replied that he was anxious that as many people as possible be alerted to the situation. One of the main reasons for Dennis' action of behalf of his client is that Omar was only a minor when he was taken to Guantanamo. He feels betrayed by his own Government's lack of support for one of its citizens.

The second matter is a lot less serious. I was visiting a missionary priest friend today over in Liverpool. Fr John Doran is his name. He works in South Africa. He was telling me that he was up in Scotland around the time of the 1st ManU game. He was on the train travelling back from Edinburgh when he met in with a group of Aberdeen Celtic supporters heading for Old Trafford. Suffice to say, they raised £600.00 for his work there and then. Wonderful stuff. Fr John was even more impressed that they mostly were going simply to support the team, as they all expected to get beat. They're real supporters, says he. I was tempted to say (but didn't): yes, real CELTIC supporters. If any of you are reading this, YOU are a credit to our club.

Johnnyquest,

Only for the quick thinking and accurate long pass from, I think, Gould, the ball would never have bounced off Sutton's chest in the fortuitous manner that it did to land at Larsson's feet; only for him to misshit it through the legs of Konterman and then sclaff it over the head of the stumbling goalkeeper, who was on one knee, due to being hit by a missile thrown by the ball boy, allegedly,David Marshall.

Still, I'll accept a fluke over them, any time.

Mo's contribution was to break the pattern of playing across the midfield, to break forward and attack their right side of defence.
No action from Mo, meant no Celtic corner.

Unfortunately, my trips across the water to CP are rare these days, but if you are ever in Donegal....it's very nice here.:

The Estadio Vicente Calderón Espacio Memorial is now reality

Their doors have been opened and one of Club Atlético de Madrid’s new project is now reality. The Vicente Calderón Espacio Memorial was officially presented in a ceremony that took place on Friday 31 October. GIEM Sports, a pioneering company and leaders in this sector, has turned the Calderón into the first football stadium in the world which houses an area of these characteristics. In this way, the staunch supporters of Atlético de Madrid can place the ashes of their loved ones in a place that is sacred to many of them. This pioneering initiative allows the remains of the team’s followers, or those of their loved ones, to rest in columbaries built into the wall. The columbaries create a warm environment far from the cold image of conventional funerary areas. With this initiative, Atlético de Madrid isn’t just offering a pioneering service to their fan club members, but also one that projects an image of modernity.

In attendance at the presentation of the Estadio Vicente Calderón Espacio Memorial were, on behalf of Club Atlético de Madrid, Mr. Miguel Ángel Gil Marín (Managing Director, Mr. Lázaro Albarracín (Vice-President of the Social Department, Mr. Felipe Hernanz Gaona (Chairman of the Rojiblanco Senate), Mr. Juan Carlos Moya (Commercial Director General) and Mr. Fernando Fariza (Director General of the Social Department). GIEM Sports was represented by Mr. José Huertes (Chairman) and Mr. Santiago Bach (Managing Director). Other figures who didn’t want to miss the date were Mr. Kenny McLeod (Business Development Manager of Glasgow Celtic), and Mr. Adelardo Rodríguez (former Atlético de Madrid player).

Mr. Lázaro Albarracín wanted to point out that “it will be a special place for all our supporters. It will allow us to offer the chance for all football fans to have a space to gather and remember. There are many people and fans of this sport that have openly expressed their will to be able to rest close to that which they have loved and which has been important in their lives.”

For his part, Mr. José Huertes, Chairman of GIEM Sports, wanted to make it clear that “I would like to thank Atlético de Madrid for having placed their confidence in our company. Through the Espacio Memorial, we will be able to keep the memory of our most loved ones alive. Death is inevitable and we want to make it less dramatic.”

The Chairman of the company explained that “Atlético de Madrid is more than a club, it’s a feeling. It goes beyond titles. That’s why the supporters will feel the need to be close to what was their travelling partner during their entire lives. That’s how the Memorial Spaces respond to those needs of fans.”

The Atlético de Madrid Espacio Memorial occupies 600 square metres and houses 2,490 comubaries, with a capacity of 4,210 funerary urns. The price of the columbaries ranges between 1,500 and 4,000 Euros, depending on whether its capacity is for 1, 2 or 4 urns.

Have to agree that Scott Brown is starting to show some real good form now, lets hope he can keep it up.

Another thing the ladbrookes guy just on radio saying that Celtic are 7/2 to win next Wednesday, the longest oods he can ever remember in 20 years ..surely worth a wee flutter.

Oops sorry that should have read odds in last post.

How ironically ludicrous is it to "honour" the brave men and women who represented Scotland in the Forces, by a club hoaching with renegades who turned their backs on their country- and that's only for football.

vman, Gourock is a horrible place.

young port.

An Arab family were distressed to find that the only old people's home which could take their father was Jewish.

"I'll only stay three days " said the father "but if I don't like it - and I don't expect to - then you can come and get me out!"

It was with some trepidation that the family gathered in their father's room three days later to see what he thought of the home.

"It's wonderful, just simply wonderful!" he announced to their amazement. "I'm staying!"

"What is so wonderful about it? asked the first son amazed that his father had taken so to an Israeli old people's home.

"Look around you" he said. "The surroundings are luxurious! And the food? You could not get better in a 5 star hotel. And the staff? They're so respectful!

"Do you know?" he said conspiratorially, "there is a doctor here who hasn't practised in 20 years and thet still call him Doctor?

AND there'e a judge who hasn't made a judgement in 25 years and yet they still call him your Honour?

"AND as for me? Do you realise I haven't had sex for 15 years? And they call me "The F***ing Arab!"

awfy quite on here, is it because yir aw sitting wae the lights aff in case the weans come tae the door?

The Narrowbhoat Tim @ 6.27

I hadn´t heard about today´s meeting and I live only a couple of hundred metres from the stadium!! Interesting to hear that Celtic have contacts at Atletico de Madrid.

I would have loved to have gone along to help Mr McLeod if he had needed any help with the translations. "Aleti" have a fantastic support, and there is a real family atmosphere at the matches. Although they do have the "Frente Atletico" which has some nasty hangers on.

Almost everyone in the city of Madrid is either an Atletico or a Real Madrid supporter and though the team currently managed by Javier Aguirre are in the clear minority, the passion and loyalty of their followers is second to none. I can imagine therefore that quite a few will choose to be laid to rest in their stadium.

St Stephens

I won't argue that bud, if I said anything against the Port Sinnfienn ma missus (jockspice) would hiv me.

2 things......how wid ye know aboot Gourock? sure the only time ye leave the toon is to go tae the Cellic games and the other is

vman,

YPSR if you dont mind.

Janies at the Bay Hotel around 1982, thats the first step for a young Port Onion venturing into Gourock. I didnt fit in with my sta press and crombie while the new romatics were applying each others mascara.

Villarreal has left itself with a mountain to climb in the second leg of this Copa del Rey last 32 after this humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Poli Ejido in the first leg match at the Santo Domingo stadium

With a performance that Club President, Fernando Roig would later describe as “embarrassing”, Villarreal crashed to a 5-0 defeat against Polideportivo Ejido at the Santo Domingo municipal stadium in the first leg of its match in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey. Molina helped himself to a hat-trick (9`, 37` and 51`) while Gregory hit a brace (79` and 89`) to give the Almería outfit a thumping victory against a hugely disappointing Yellow side that now has a mountain to climb if it is to progress any further in this season’s Spanish Cup.

vman

I think it's just out. It's called 'A Bhoy called Bertie' and was written with Alex Gordon. I'll lend you it when I'm done :-)

If there's a player
who hasn't yet proved worthy of a regular start but in my limited thinking still has a chance it's Massimmo.

I'm probably wrong as usual but I still believe in the guy.

Bloke_109........aye but I don't know ye cause ...well, how do I put this.....yir jist a bloke lol

Is it past the watershed yet? I do hope so as I wouldn't want to get all you hot blooded young uns of 20 odd years getting to excited.

Do you think that there was any significance in Martin O'Neil's comment in todays press saying that Celtic could be the biggest club in the world if they were to get into the EPL?

He was saying that the EPl would benefit from both Celtic and Rangers joining it.

The topic is not a current one.I am hoping Celtic are pushing for this again.

eventheolivesarebleeding ;

I only wish he had kept the bigots name out of things.
Why should they benefit from our global reputation while they bring only shame to the table.
Hope one day we go our own way and leave them to it in the spl.

Martin O'neil is nobody's fool........so there ye hiv it.......I wonder if he still owns all those shares that were part of his stay in Glasgow? In any case he's still a Celt I think, it's nice to have a well respected Celt in the EPL.

I agree he shouldn't have mentioned them in the same breath as us, but things have moved on a pace since then, when MoN was at Celtic the talk was always about Celts and them joining the EPL, nowadays none of us want to be associated with them (rightly so IMO).

I don't want, and have never wanted Celtic to be part of the EPL as I think there would be a lot of agro with the locals down here and the publicity would be bad for the club (Argentina chants etc).......however where we (the supporters) really shine and belong IMO is the European arena.

I think this day will come TAL.

A guy in my work asked for time of a while back as he looks after his granny and she has "old timers"

I said "pardon - did you say oldtimers" and in all seriousness he said yes.

When I told him it was alzheimers - he said he thought because it was old people who got it it was called oldtimers.

he complained to my boss because I burst out laughing

Congratulations Scott Brown.

I suspect things are coming together for Scott Brown and the whole team this season. Its looking good for the Big One.
Roll On Four.

PS
Had to smile at what happened today on the subway in Harlem. Crammed like sardines we were. A very large, well dressed African American squeezes his hand up and bangs the ceiling, holds up his metrocard and shouts to the other sardines...

"S'CUSE ME LADIES AND GENTLEMEN (obtaining total silence)

I, like y'all, paid two dollars for this train ride. I do not believe we should have to travel like this. Especially paying two dollars for it. However I just gotta say...

I am wearing a pair of shoes that cost six hundred dollars. If anyone stands on ma shoes then we are gonna have a very big problem.

Thank You..And Y'All Have A Very Good Day.

People moved away the quarter of an inch that they could...
...Never did see the shoes.

I'd keep Gordon Strachan for years and years to come - at least for the next 7 in a row. But afterwards, can we get Peter Cook. Love this.

V, yes I got your double entendre and it's funny you should say what you posted 'cos I asked my son quite recently how his friends viewed me. I didn't want to ask as I felt it wasn't appropriate but I was curious to know how I was perceived by his peers and what he said to me will live with me 'till I die.

He informed me that all his mates thought I was "cool" (which I obviously am lol) and that I came across as his best friend (which he informed them I was). My heart almost burst out of my chest as that is and was the most important thing I have ever wanted to be for both my children as the complete reverse is true in my case, but that's another story !!!

"...a string of harvest failures in the 1690s brought about such a terrible famine in SCOTLAND that perhaps a quarter of the population died ; many survivors sought to make a new start for themselves on the far side of the North Channel [Ulster]..."
well, well, what irony. Tell them the famine is over in Jockland so why don't they come home ?

Keynote Speech - Sir Gordon Duffield, CE SFA

My Lords, Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to Hampden. Welcome to the Home of Scottish Football and welcome, indeed, to my place of work. It is most certainly an honour and a privilege to stand at the very forefront of Scotland's national sport and look even further forward. As we welcome our exiles back to the land of mountain and heather I welcome all here to what I hope will be an entertaining evening of friendship and shared aspiration. We move together as one for the benefit of the bonnie, yes the bonnie, beautiful game. I will refer to the forthcoming challenge match against a formidable Argentinian Select XI in my closing speech but, firstly I would like to introduce you to your Top Table.

To my right is a man known to every single person in this room. The most successful manager Scotland has ever produced, Sir Fergus Alexanderson, returns to his native Glasgow. Sir Fergus starred for our... er... his boyhood heroes, Rangers, in the 1960s and despite, having to leave the marble halls of Ibrox on account of his wife's poor health, we all hope he will return to G51 in some capacity in the near future. Sir Fergus has also given service to Rangers' near neighbours, St Mirren; to the Ibrox club's domestic rivals Aberdeen and is currently manager of Banchester United, the city where, of course, the Light Blues came close to winning yet another European trophy.

My Lords, Ladies and Gentleman, please show your appreciation for Sir Fergus Alexanderson, the Hero of Harmony Row.......

Duffield's Keynote Speech continueth...

They say that variety is the spice of life and if Sir Fergus regularly finds himself in the sporting spotlight then the gentleman to my left prefers a more modest role(Duffield pauses but naebdy laughs). Brown Browning and I share a friendship that goes back to our childhood in the non-denominational Killwinning(Duffield whispers the word Gemmell)Primary School where we regularly starred for the school team against the local enemy, no offence Cardinal O'Keefe naebdy laughs again. Time and custom have..er.. thankfully marched on since then - Brown has become and always was a Master Baker (naebdy laughs again) whilst I, to quote Frankie Valli, climbed the ladder up to fortune and fame, worked my fingers to the bone, made myself a name .

My Lords, Ladies and Gentleman, please show your appreciation and say Aye Tae A Killie Pie, I give you - Mr Brown Browning...

Anyways sir I hope the hoopees round of your birthday weekend with a good drubbing of the miniREARS.

Hail Hail

I've just finished a book called, "Irish", written by John Burrowes. It's about the Irish and their relationship with Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
I enjoyed it even though in straining to be "fair" it, in my opinion at least, occasionally distorts the truth.
The lumping together, for example, of James MacMillan's "Scotland's Shame" speech and Donald Findlay's video appearance as gaffes of equal proportion, was, I thought, an ill-judged gesture towards, "balance".
Perhaps though this is mere carping. The book was good and dealt with a subject I've previously read little about.

Paul (and others)

Something that's been bothering me - I know Jinky was voted the GReatest ever Celt, but for me the one person who embodies everything that Celtic as a club stands for is Billy McNeil.

From the '65 Scottish Cup winning header, to the European Cup and then the Centenary Double, I think Billy is a class apart.

The club did not fully recognise Jock Stein's contribution until after he was gone and even then under pressure.

I feel in generations to come Billy's contribution will be recognised as ranking among the greatest of Celtic Legends. I just wish that the club would recognise tis just now. He still travels the length and breadth and is still a wonderful ambassador for the club. I would like to see that recognised by an appointment such as ex officio Director.

I can think of no greater person to represent the Club.

Any Views?

On Scott Brown POTM. Persoanlly I do not think the guy has played that well throughout the month but his last 20 mins against Hibees was the best I seen him play in the hoops. His performance against Killie was brilliant too. I have stood by Scott Brown in the past as the potential of this boy will raise him to Legendary status one day if he sticks around long enough. What we have seen these past 2 games from Skoosh is only a drop in the Ocean of what he has to offer.

o1bhoy

If yer still there - I ran out of matchsticks at 2am and couldnae keep my peepers open.

Mrs Jinx says Im obsessed with "that blog thing"

Havanalaugh ,

I may be wrong but Billy may be involved with the club already in some sort of capacity.

Recently though Billy let the side down with comments to the daily rag over the Lennon assault.

I don’t know about anybody else but when I paly football and things get a wee bit nasty, as they often tend to do, I don’t hope for back up from my team mates… I expect it. Just as each one of my teammates, expect the same of me.

Martin O’Neill was spoilt for enforcers. Bobo Balde, Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren , Johan Mjallby, Neil Lennon, Stan Varga, Alan Thompson, John Hartson, amongst others. All good guys, who although never in search of a barney, they were not shy of it either. Martin O’Neill was wise enough to appreciate their SPL necessity.

Gordon Strachan is a different breed of manager to Martin O’Neill. Although Gordon Strachan played a lot of his football in Scotland, he never did so as a Celtic player. I don’t think he fully appreciated the obstacles and prejudices that court our club; week in, week out.

Now he does though, and I think that the signing of Glenn Loovens, along with some previous unsuccessful signings was a lesson-learnt attempt to address the physical deficiencies in the squad. In the interim, we have to make do with what we have and maybe react to what others lack in the skills ability locker. i.e. they are toilet and to try and drag us down. They, the toilets, will resort to physical intimidation to try and escape a gubbing, every time.

When this happens, and it quite frequently does, we, each of us, more or less know which Celtic player will be targeted for the ‘Thai-boxing’ school of soccer skills. (Anybody ever noticed how European teams tend to target another genre?)

Celtic are a wee bit lightweight now; the only players who appear to ‘welcome the fight’ are JVOH, Darren O’Dea and the intrepid Scott Brown. (Paul Hartley is not shy, but he is seldom there, and Artur, Gary and Mick take too much arousing and/or, too long in arriving) ((my opinion)) (Barry Robson, yet to see him square up yet, but I don’t think he’d let us down)

Does anybody else see similar character traits in Scott Brown that others such as Billy Bremner, Graham Souness, Davie Hay, Nobby Styles, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and a few others had.

I am glad, really glad, chuffed to bits even, that Scott Brown has had some begrudged recognition from the most begrudging of quarters and I am further amazed that more family orientated observers are even more begrudging with their diluted accolades whilst so quick to malign on any other Saturday.

The thing that makes me most glad vis-à-vis Scott Brown, the 23 year old ‘MAN’ plays in the hoops.

Havanalaugh, have to agree re Caesar, always has/had a dignified stance re Celtic, even though he had once or twice been unfairly treated. The same goes for Big Jock, treated very badly by the club when he stepped down. "Thanks, Jock, for 9 in a row and that big trophy, how would you like to run the pools?" But that was the old board, they didn`t deserve the success, although i`m still glad we had it. Big Billy should most definitely be in the employment of Glasgow Celtic F.C., as he is a wonderful ambassador for that very club.
Now back to Smashinmilkbottles. Is it to be the Bollinger Bus, aka the Veuve Vehicle, or are you having a `dry` run? Let me know so I know how many slices of lemon i`ll need to cut, and how much grinding of the black pepper mill will have to be done.

He is involved as a lisbon Lion but that is more about Corporate Hospitality etc. I mean in an Official position, similar to that extended to Bobby Charlton by Manu U.

I think his comments on that particular (Lennon) issue may have been inadvisable and disappointing, but whilst in no way condoning I think he merely meant that in his day, after a derby game, you stayed out of the way to avoid trouble.

Help, please.
Where I live , there are many supporters of Dundee Utd, Aberdeen and , of course, Celtic and Rangers. Without exception, the fans of Utd and Dons prefer Celtic but STILL brand us and them as being` as bad as each other`. I want a list of FACTS to show them the error of this viewpoint. For example, it is a fact that Rangers had a sectarian signing policy and that Celtic have always been all inclusive. Any more of that type of fact, indeed, ANY type of fact for the list would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

do you have a tip for the accumulator today we have 3 teams so far .
colchester

You should contact public officials in Barcelona, Villareal, Manchester for starters and get there perspective on the difference between Celtic and REARS.

Thought provoking and very true regards MONs team. I always said that Sourface and Smith built teams to stop us playing, then MON to a certain degree did the same to them and they didnt like that. Compare hately with Sutty - although Chris had quality too bit guys rumbled up the others defence. Same in midfield and bif strapping guys at the Back.

I think it was Ramon Vega who said after he left Celtic that although he was a big boy the 3 we then had Joos Bobo and Johan were giants.

One point about barry robson though - he has shown his mettle in games with the first minute of a Rankers match at CP in the run in last year being an example when he took dailly out early.

And remember the day he squared up to naylor when he was at utd and got sent off for it.

Moonbeams,
Thanks for that butwe KNOW the diference but hard evidence is what I am after . The response to Barca, Villareal and Manchester will always be `Ah, but it is only a minority` response.

Long time lurker.

Just wanted to wish my mate Biggus a happy birthday.

Let's hope for a Celtic victory this weekend to celebrate.

I think 1-0 Skippy. In fact I think I'll put the money I was going to spend on a present for Biggus on it!

what about the signing policy?
our board asked the support to refrain not to prevent them beind deducted points or thrown out if europe..

Hotsmokedsalmon:

if your mates have a week spare to read and digest, then point them to Pablophnques blog. You, and they, will be utterly dismayed.

I personally have forwarded 'Pablo's' litany to several people and “astounded of forehead” is the normal response.

Jinkysboy:

I don’t doubt nor question Barry’s resolve, I remember the ‘tackle’ well (but don’t remember the Naylor incident). However, that was not my point, my point is simply that there are few, who presently wear the hoops, who have an enthusiasm for ‘aggro’.
An essential ingredient to successful teams.

Opposition teams play to their strengths, whatever they might be, and our deficiencies.

Scott Brown, for a 5” 9”, 23 year old, oozes ‘gallus’ attitude, and most opposition players tend to not test the mettle. The Celtic squad are a wee bit lacking at present in the ‘gallus’ attitude department.

At 27 and a stone heavier and wiser, I think Scott Brown would be better than Paul Ince and a host of others. I would love to see him still in the hoops at 27. I’d love to see him grow with the other youngsters that we have in our team.

Celtic offer £3 million for Israeli international
It has been reported that Celtic have now made an official £3 million bid for the Israeli international Elyaniv Barda after watching him playing for Genk in every game for the last month.

The 26 year-old has stalled on signing a new contract with the Belgian side, and with other clubs also said to tracking him, Celtic have decided to make their interest official before he gets sidetracked.

Barda's agent, Dudo Darhan, said: "Celtic, PSV, Twente and Heerenveen are interested in my client, but Celtic and Twente are the only ones to have made their interest official so far."

Barda has already scored 20 goals in 39 appearances for Genk, and has made 9 appearances for the Israeli national team in the last two years.

I take your point and agree we dont have enough scrappers in the team right now. We need a mix of skill and brawn and yes a gallus streak like skoosh has.

The support should see that and not get on his case as confidence in his role is vital. yeah in 4 years he will be a fantastic player if he continues to develop.

I think that many of our players suffer from a lack of belief at times - Naylor, Wilson, Skippy at times, and even aiden looks shirt of confidence at times.

I dont rate Mick as an inspirational captain - Lambert and lennon were leaders of men - I dont see that in Mick

vmhan

did you not go into work today then?

Would you think that this signing would mean JVOH leaving or an additional striker?

Vman, this is a snippet on him from Wikipedia;;

On 21 November 2007, he scored his second goal for Israel in their 1-0 win against Macedonia. Recently Barda has been linked with a £4 million January move to Scottish premier league champions Celtic F.C

Finally Scott Brown is getting some credit (and I don't mean from the League sponsors)... what makes his last three games more impressive for me is that he's excelled in Centre Mid with 3x different partners in 3x games; Caldwell, Hartley, Donati...

He's class.

Hotsmokedsalmon,

give them the URL's for CQN and FascistFascist and then let them make their own minds up.

Jinkysboy:

"Lambert and Lennon were leaders of men"

I agree one thousand percent.

I think Mick might be a better player if the responsibility of 'Captaincy' was removed from his shoulders and I think Scott Brown is a ‘Captain’ in the making.

I only hope if he stays in the SPL… it is as ‘our’ Captain.

WG,ML2

re. the captaincy, I agree there don't appear to be many natural leaders in the team - if they were featured more regularly, I could probably make a case for Hartley or Robson. I seem to remember this was part of Strachan's thinking when he signed Elvis, it was to bring in a leader, someone for his young team to look up to and learn from. Like him as a player or not (and I'm not exactly his biggest fan), off the field Elvis is a very calm and articulate man, and on the field demonstrated good leadership. Mick speaks well for the club, but doesn't bring much in the way of leadership on the pitch - when controversy and/or tempers flare, more often than not it is Gary Caldwell who steps in. Could there be a case for a club captain as well as a team captain, like when Lambert captained the team but left the off-field PR stuff to Tom Boyd?

Kitalba

Strachan had a tough choice to make when lennon left - no obvious captain at the time. I have no doubt Micks development as a player have been hampered by the responsibility of captain. Difficult to take it off him now though especially with 2 SPL titles as captain.

I agree that in a couple of years Skoosh would be my ideal captain.

I love his snarling attitude and he is a fine player too and will get better as he gets older and wiser and as you point out physical stature will grow and help too

I have always believed that Celtic should offer Billy McNeil the title of Club President.

Hoople, thanks for the reply mate and correct ! And thanks for the heads-up about his book.

I'm tired of the captain debate. McManus is our captain until he leaves or retires, to take it off him while he's still playing for us would be an immense slap in the face.

By questioning this you just provide ammunition for the media to claim that the celtic support is uneasy with the guy.

o1bhoy
cheers mate .liverpool it is .
devils
cheers for that mate ,I will take scunthorpe from your link ,to complete the coupon .
thanks again bhoys for your input .
hail hail .

o1bhoy, I know that. I was just making the point that he was the style of leader that we could still be doing with - something I think maybe Hartley or Robson could provide without actually being in the team. I wasn't suggesting the ex-player and now-Scotland-coach should be that person!

Vmhan

If you have two monikers and ones aw then its a bit of a giveaway mate. You will be glad Jockspice doesnt log onto CQN to keep tabs on you !!!!

A drunken day in Blackpool in November (is it really november already) sounds like a plan.

Im off to my old maws - half a mile past Greyskull - will have to time the mission well to avoid the knuckledragging masses.

Another striker great - but for Ghods sake give us a bloooooming Left Back first.

paul 67

a date for your diary.....the 10th anniversary of farrygate will be upon us in march of next year... the sfa is still very much a rangers appreciation society, with almost all major positions filled by rangers supporters or sympathisers...which is incredible given the scandal of the the national association being found guilty of bias in their favour only a few years ago...an interesting footnote to that scandal is that jim traynor explained it away as personal animosity between fergus and farry and not anti celtic bias, much in the same way he calls racism "banter"....the taste of succulent lamb obviously lingers long ....

the recent intervention by peat in the racism scandal, in which he managed to exactly replicate rangers official position, and at the same time widen the issue by mentioning clubs in plural, doesn't indicate any change in position, merely a bowing to the inevitable

as you mentioned a while ago peat will be replaced by former rangers employee and life long rangers fan campbell ogilvie, and in the case of the chief exec there has never been an appointment who was not a rangers supporter or sympathiser....there have been 7 chief executives since 1882...all 7 were of the same ethnicity and religion....of the 7 five have been openly hostile to celtic, one being fired for having his bias proven by an independent commission, the other 4 were luckier

the national team manager , if you exclude the german vogts has had 6 consecutive managers who have been either rangers employees or rangers supporters

the position of president, chief executive and national team manager appear to be open only to rangers supporters or sympathisers, with the exception of the very rare token appointment .....this is institutional bias and should be worthy of wider ridicule

Duffield's Keynote Speech continueth.....

I'd like to take the opportunity to introduce the company to the latest entrepreneurial wiz in the West of Scotland. This gentleman is already being spoken of in the same reverential tones as Sir Murray David - who unfortunately, because of business reason, cannot be with us this evening - and Sir Tom Poacher. The sponsorship of this season's flagship Scottish Cup competition attracted many serious bidders and I had many sleepless nights pulling my hair out (muffled guffaws from the SFA minions' table) trying to decide who should win the prestigious right to headline the country's prime knock-out competition. In the end it got personal - I was mightily impressed by the wit and generosity of my new friend, William Chaughey. Willie has promised to say a few words later in the evening. In the meantime, please be upstanding and raise your glasses in honour of the charming nae chivalrous chieftain of chilldom - Willie Chaughey.

(Chaughey receives a warm round of applause)

CMcM: Better, Sir Gordon, just tie things up now wi nae mair blunders......

Havanalaugh, appointing Billy as a director cropped up on here earlier in the year. Someone suggested this would be a good idea but ironically suggested the board would exploit his position with the support to get him to back the board line, which of course, every board member must do.

The Bobby Charlton example is not a great one. When the Glazers bought the club Charlton was subject to levels of profanity from Man Utd fans I have never heard from any football fans – and that is saying something.

If you join the board, you stop becoming a retired legend and become a backer of current policy, perhaps even the public face of it. This is probably not what Billy wants and he is not someone the board should hide behind.

If he joins the board, he has to back club policy and players in his newspaper column. There is a more earthy consideration, in particular the broadcast of Celtic games via Polsat at his hostelry; he might not be keen as it could cost him money.

Still not articulating this very well, I blame the late night last night.

My underlying point is that Strachan himself recognised the need for an older, wiser head to be an influence in the dressing room. That, more than his, shall we say, limited football abilities would seem to be the motivation for the purchase of Mr Pressley when other, younger, centre-halfs were available. Strachan recognised that the players would benefit from having such a player around, whether or not he was on the pitch wearing the armband. I just wondered if that sort of responsibility could be passed, even unofficially, to someone like Paul Hartley, taking a bit of weight off Mick's still-young shoulders?
