Stunning turnout for CQN Charity Five-a-side Cup
On Saturday morning, despite treacherous weather in Glasgow, the Celtic Quick News community came together to do help those in need of assistance.
Our Charity Five-a-side competition was an enormous success, collecting enough stationary and equipment to keep an entire school in Malawi going for 6 months.
As well as immediate needs such as food, clean water, medicines and shelter, it is important that the world's poorest communities gain access to good education if they are to build a better future, and this starts with making sure kids have access to simple tools, such as paper and pencils at school.
When I opened the curtains on Saturday morning I wondered what the drop-out rate would be, but need not have worried, there was a 100% attendance; I couldn't believe the crowd of players and spectators who were there before I arrived.
The football itself was a great success and a much higher standard than last year. Holders, Pulse8, lost one of their group games before being eliminated in the quarter finals, despite the goal-scoring talents of Celtic legend, Frank McGarvey.
'Il Veridiblancos' beat 'Shut up Michael' 2-1 in a tight final with few clear-cut chances to take the magnificent Celtic Quick News Charity Trophy, donated by Trophy World Direct, who brought along a stunning array of rewards for both teams who reached the final, the referees and all the kids who participated in the penalty kick competition, thanks Pat.
We invited former Fifa referee, Kenny Clark, along to officiate in the final, but he insisted in participating in the whole day, which is perhaps just as well, as things got a bit 'competitive' on occasion, so we got to see how order is maintained by the top refs.
I am sure there are a millions things Kenny (and his son) could have done instead of getting out of bed at dawn on a cold and miserable Saturday morning to referee a crowd of Celtic fans; he was an absolute treat and added significantly to the occasion, thanks Kenny.
Our thanks also to legendary Celtic captain, Danny McGrain, who again presented the trophy and medals.
Thanks to Ultimate Soccer, who entertained and worked with the kids, and to our friends at Not The View, who donated magazines and copies of the Wee Green Book, to aid fundraising.
I am sure you will all join me in offering special thanks to Kevin, Des, Andy and families, three generations of who were there to make sure the day went as smoothly as it did. The amount of work involved in planning and running such an occasion is enormous and appreciated.
Glasgow the Caring City will take our donated school supplies, and cash, to Malawi and continue their work in building a better future for some of the world's most needy.
And as for everyone who donated, you are a credit to your community, an example to football fans everywhere and the living spirit of what brought Celtic into existence 120 years ago, thank you.

Report on rankers game in the Scotsman - amazing that it starts with 3 paras on Kris Boyd and no mention of the abuse young McCarthy got
KRIS Boyd had his first experience on Saturday of what is likely to be consistent treatment of him from opposition supporters at Scottish football grounds for the foreseeable future.
The jeering of his name from the Hamilton Accies fans when the teams were announced before kick-off was followed by a similar reaction every time he touched the ball, with chants of 'There's only one George Burley' thrown in for good measure.
From the moment he announced his decision to make himself unavailable for Scotland duty while Burley is in charge, Boyd had assured himself of such antipathy from those who consider him guilty of treasonous conduct in regard to the international team.
Just as surely as he will contemptuously shrug aside such judgment of him, however, Boyd will continue to do what he does better than any other player currently eligible to play for Scotland. His two goals at New Douglas Park, which allowed Rangers to come from behind for a victory which keeps them in touch with Celtic at the top of the SPL, took his tally to six in just seven starting appearances this season.
bronze , or silver. Jinkysboy , you can't have both !
Sannabhoy
I dont do silver mate !
Its all yours
Jinkys - that article from the Scotsman is breathtaking in its biased reporting of the chants. To comment on chants against Boyd(I watched some of the game and didn't hear any booing of him), and completely ignore the abuse aimed at young McCarthy is stunning.
There is one almight effort being made here to ignore the racist abuse from Rangers supports - in their thousands, every week.
What a sad, pathetic, blinkered, bigotted cesspit of a country we live in.
Wrong tires again! Drat and double drat!!
I'll paraphrase an old Department S single to ask "Is Nigel there?"
Good stuff Paul. It's a pity about the weather, but well done to all who braved the horizontal rain to play so well.
It's events like this that remind us what Celtic is all about.
Henriks
I went on the Scotsman site to see if they commented on McCarthy's treatment expecting at worst that they would ignore it.
But to ignore it and highlight Boyds "abuse" is beyond the call of duty.
Three Cheers for Stephen Halliday
Nigel,
Ever get the feeling a new younger generation have snuck up and overtaken you when you thought you were unbeatable?
Paul 67
On the contrary I think we should be thanking you and your team for a well organised event and great fun all round. You and your friends embody Walfrid and the clubs spirit.
Thanks for a great morning and a fantastic site
Gordon J
Early congrats mate - They will be demoralised after last night.
bet you wish you could get a flight to Phillie this morning?
Jinksboy
I second that - well done cqn.
Great event and well organised despite the weather conspiring against you.
Pretty good standard of football too - I reckon we could have played against 'Il Veridiblancos' for the best part of a day without creating a clear cut chance!
Thanks to everyone who helped organise the event it was great fun despite getting soaked on at least four occasions during the day,Scott Browns goal just finished off what was an excellent day all in.
We had a great time despite being the oldest team there and getting pumped by Verdiblanco's lot, wait till next year...............:-)
I did not have my parka with me but I can honestly say that I've never played footy with so many clothes on before!!!
Big Chris you are an animal :-)
Looking forward to the over forties tournament next year.
Pat.
I would love to be on the other side of the pond right now. If tonight is the clincher then the city of Philadelphia will go wild.
Philly is as passionate a sports town as I've come across anywhere - it's a year round obsession with the Phillies, Eagles, 76ers and Flyers, not to mention the many college teams in PA.
If tonight is indeed the first championship since 1983 it will be very special.
The Rays are a hard team to kill off though; tonight will be much closer because they are fighting for their lives. But the smell of voctory is there and Cole Hamels is on the mound. I'm confident!
Hey Nigel, Graham Hill was on the other night taking the mickey out of you. Fancy that! Getting turned over by a dead guy. You're a nancy boy who should still be wearing L plates.
My wife's friend used to be married to the base player from Department S. If that doesn't make me famous, I don't know what will.
Awe naw
regards Graham Speirs from the last thread
Im glad he never got "wind" of the CQN Charity Cup otherwise we would be accused of risking our health and giving away our hard earned cash just to "rain on their parade" and get another one over on our city "RIVALS"
Ach I just burst out laughing as i typed rivals then and spilled my coffee
Paul,
There is a rouge article for today http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/2008/10/celtic-storm-to-dramatic-late.php - it appeared via google alerts

Im sure the same guys giving you stick were the in the Gary Caldwell fan club last season
No respect for a legend.........
jinkysboy,
what that article proves is the mindset of Graham Spiers. He only despises those huns that have failed the civilisation test as it makes him uncomfortable to be seen following the huns and to be assocaited by it. His one man (and that´s the truth) crusade is not about bettering social evils. Its all about me me me as far as Spiers is concerned. Dont be conned or fooled by him ever.
Hail Hail
my people- my Tifosi Tims! if I'd known that I would get stopped by your police somewhere in South Lanarkshire simply for wearing the souvenir t-shirt I was given by His Holiness Pope John Paul II when he visited Maranello in 1990 then I would have been able to join you in time.
Instead I spent Saturday morning waiting for my lawyer to get me out of chokey on a charge of' religiously aggravated breech of the peace', whatever that is.
When I did get going again the sound of my twin V8 turbos drowned out the gales in quadrophonic testosterone but alas! too late.
Next year definitely, my people.
Nige, the people's champ.

I think they gave the bhoys down the front a bovril cup with the paste in the bottom and a stirrer. The cup then automatically refilled every few minutes.

Gordon J, maybe next year we could see if one of those countries looking for a ‘39th game’ would be interested in hosting us.
Jinkysboy, great credit to the extended Blantyre’ family.
Timmy7, youth is overrated. Being oldest team is surely a victory in itself.
Therags, thanks.
o1bhoy, it was not much dryer for those of us sitting in the back row of the North Stand!

It's not enough that rounders takes over the sport in CQN it's taking over the music as well!
DBBIA- yer pal, who likes ye!
Paul 67,
any info on how "shut up michael" got their name .....
whats the story.
I can confirm that a senior partner from our Airdrie office was despatched to a police station with the postal code ML2 to assist our client, Nigel Mansell, regain his liberty after an altercation with the South Lanarkshire police.
While the case is of course confidential and we must respect our client's right to privacy, we can say that the T Shirt worn by our client caused no concern to the police. They were far more interested in the 12 "wraps" that they found in the glove compartment and the 4 empty Buckfast bottles in the footwell on the passenger's side. On the latter point, our client's defence of "When in Lanarkshire...." was accepted as reasonable by the police and he was released but without his car keys and the remaining bottles which the police said would be "destroyed"
Congrats again Paul67 (and to 'ALL' who organised, helped, participated, contributed and endured) on yet another laudable day in the history of CQN.
Supporters simply personifying their clubs 'ethos'.
And on that subject, I have watched this video, and several others just like it.
You should watch it because there is something totally sureal about it.
What is that?... I can almost hear the lurking 'jouno's' ask.
Well look again, Manchester's finest surrounded by those mad 'fenian barstewards' from Glasgow and guess what... No riot gear; No fear; Folded arms and a smile on their faces, knowing that at nights end, all would be going home safe and well... irespective of the score.
Celtic Supporters... a credit to their club, their city, their country, and most importantly of all... a credit to themselves.
One day it might catch on with others. Well... you never know.
saint stivs fp, no idea.
Nigel Mansell's lawyers, “When in Lanarkshire..” :-)
Kitalba, it’ll take a while before that catches on.
You ghuys that had more interesting and important things to do in the early part of Saturday will have been spared the Radio Scotland broadcast from New Douglas Park, but there was something interesting.
When Dead Eye Boydistuta slotted home for 1-2, wee Chico on the touchline intervened to say, with great chagrin, that the first replays suggested offside.
That, however, was all we heard on that matter until he interviewed the Hamilton boss post-match, in which the subject of offside and a possible foul by the scorer made a return. In Chic's ‘interviews’ with Boyd and with Walter Smith, he managed to stay on message, just asking them how come they are so magnificent (I paraphrase, but you get the idea—it was like the FAQs on a cheap software company's website).
Good job it wasn't a really important decision that went Rangers’s way, like a corner or something. We'd never have heard the end.
Nigel Mansell's Lawyers
I cannae believe a North Lanarkshire man (or woman, I use the term loosely)would defile their good name by trudging into the abyss that is South Lanarkshire.

Well done to 'Il Veridiblancos'. The standard was great this year. Another great success for CQN with the tournament running smoothly and a friendly atmosphere throughout (except for the Pulse 8 in fighting!).

Timmy7-noted is not me btw (although he wishes he was) He was our manager for the day and his inspirational teamtalk before our game against the eventual winners, Il Verdiblancos, gave us the motivation to avoid a serious humping. The fact that they kept hitting our goalie with their shots also helped.
We'll be back next year; Older but wiser.
Also it must be pointed out that our squad should have included VCLXI but he chose to go for a haircut instead. Turning up with beers, however, meant he was forgiven

Interesting aricle on John Carew
Anyone want to hazard a guess on what the "mitigating circumstances might be.
Carew fined 'heavily' by O'Neill
John Carew was an important factor in the 4-0 win on Sunday
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill fined John Carew "pretty heavily" after the player's alleged visit to a lap-dancing club in the early hours of Thursday.
Carew, left out of the Uefa Cup game win over Ajax that night, returned to play a key role in the 4-0 Premier League demolition of Wigan on Sunday.
O'Neill said: "John was disciplined because he breached the rules.
"John thinks there are mitigating circumstances. I listened and then I made a decision he was wrong."
Keen to draw a veil over the matter, O'Neill added: "It was a large oversight on his part.
"John assures me it won't happen again so I will believe him. It wasn't the brightest thing to do. Most of the players in the dressing room are saying it should be doubled."
Credit to Darrel Broadfoot for his take on McCarthygate on Saturday, talking about Novo receiving a heroes welcome followed by his disgust at the Rangers supporters.
"He received a hero's welcome from the visiting supporters in any case, which is more than can be said for the reception afforded to James McCarthy.
The Hamilton midfielder has committed the cardinal sin of representing the Republic of Ireland; a decision taken on account of the Scottish FA's youth coach at the time, Archie Knox, apparently being less than enamoured by the youngster's potential.
That decision was enough for Rangers' travelling support - a continued source of embarrassment to an exasperated club - to rework The Famine Song with his name included. Their crassness knows no bounds."
Well done The Herald, first Scottish paper to say this?

Moira Gordon from the Scotsman mentioned it in passing
TALKING POINT
Initially it was whether the game should go ahead or not due to the terrible weather conditions. Afterwards, it was the latest ditty from Rangers' controversial chorus, which incorporated Hamilton player James McCarthy's name into the infamous Famine Song.
as did Thomas Jordan from the ET
FANS:
Braved the elements to turn out in numbers and got behind their team. Singled out young James McCarthy for stick following his decision to play for the Republic or Ireland but gave their team good backing.
as did Hugh Keevins in the Record
James McCarthy: Battled Thomson for midfield supremacy in the face of offensive chanting. 6
What a pathetic bunchCSC

WG: Good point salvaged at Badison, Brother Fergus. Forgive me but I thought our business was complete. Word reached me of a botched attempt on my life in the Holy Trinity Lounge.
FA: That makes two of us, Winston
WG: What do you mean ?
FA: One of your party made an attempt on my wife too.
WG: Ah, the great balancing act....
FA: ....My wife, Cafe. She has ewoped with your fweind Nafos.
WG: Voluntarily ?
FA: Wiwwingwy it would appear. She is decwibing the situation as a 'twial sepawation'. I'm afwaid she's going to weave me, Winston.

Thomas Jordan from the ET - 'Gave their team good backing'...
Since when did non stop racist and offensive chants directed towards an opposition player and a deceased football legend constitute 'giving your team good backing' ?
Only in a twisted mind can that type of song/chant be construed as good backing.
Unless I was hearing wrong and they actually sung some rangers songs. No ? Thought not.
Scum.

It was posted last week - lets hope given the weekends abuse there is a follow up article and the Irish government make further issues on this
Marinos ready to bet shirt on Naka
by Ronnie Cully
SALES of football shirts alone would recoup the millions Yokohama Marinos are about to bid to bring Shunsuke Nakamura back to Japan in January.
The J-league club believe it would be similar to the situation when sales of David Beckham shirts paid for the England star's move to Real Madrid.
Marinos have a transfer budget of around £6.5million and admitted today they are just awaiting the green light from sponsors Nissan Motors to make their multi-million-pound offer to Celtic.
Even though the 30-year-old would be a free agent in June, Marinos are prepared to pay top dollar for him now because they are confident they would make millions from his return.
In fact, financial analysts in Japan have calculated that by bringing Naka back to the club where his senior career took off, a staggerring £90m will be injected into the club and the local economy in just two years.
Marinos reckon they will see an increase in turnover in the region of £20m through sponsorship and TV deals.
Early calculations predict Naka's return would see their commercial income rise by around 30%, including a massive increase in sales of their Nike kit which costs over £65.
Marinos also anticipate the return of the national hero would attract thousands more fans to their games, with many of these supporters buying season tickets which go on sale for next season very soon.
If Marinos can persuade Celtic to let Naka move in January - and Naka's agent Roberto Takuda is due in Glasgow within the next two weeks to discuss the player's future with Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell - they can push ahead with their ambitious plans to revive a club which has endured a troubled season.
Nissan are considering bankrolling the deal and a Marinos spokesman confirmed they are desperate to make their move.
He said: "It's a matter of how soon the club can get ready for it financially. That will depend on when we get the nod for our parent company, Nissan."
However, they are sure to meet with strong opposition from Celtic manager Gordon Strachan who does not want Naka to leave Parkhead until the end of the season. Strachan knows the value of the player to the team. And, though the Champions League last 16 now looks a forlorn hope, if Nakamura stays and helps Celtic retain their SPL title it will be worth another £10m to them as that will reward for guaranteed direct entry to the Group Stages of next season's Champions League.
But, if Marinos do come in with a multi-million offer, it will be tough for Celtic to turn down it down for a player who has so little of his contract remaining.
Celtic secured Naka's image rights when they signed him for £1.4m from Reggina in 2005 and have benefited greatly from this.
But they have also invested in creating a foothold in the commercial market in Japan which, even with Koki Mizuno remaining at Parkhead, would be difficult to sustain.
Yokohama Marinos have admitted they will attempt to sign Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura in January.
Nakamura has been increasingly linked with a move back to the J. League and Yokohama, for whom the 30-year-old made his professional debut in 1997.
Marinos are keen to re-sign him during the winter transfer window for the 2009 J.League season, which begins in early March, and will seek funding from car firm Nissan.
Nakamura's contract expires at the end of the Scottish season, but the Japan international has previously spoken of his desire to return to his homeland while he is young enough to make an impact.
Yokohama officials visited Parkhead in May to discuss a potential move and confirmed they will make an approach for Nakamura if it proves viable.
"It's a matter of how soon the club can get ready financially for it," a Yokohama official said.
"That will depend on when we get the nod from our parent company Nissan."
Japan Football Association honorary president Saburo Kawabuchi last week revealed that, during a chat with Nakamura last week following Manchester United's Champions League game with Celtic at Old Trafford, the midfielder hinted he was keen to return to Japan.
"I spoke to him after the game and he said to me, My child is approaching the age of going to nursery school and I'm 30.' It sounded like he's made up his mind to come back," Kawabuchi was quoted as saying in the Japanese press.
Nakamura, who joined Celtic in 2005, stressed that nothing had been decided but his agent is expected to travel to Scotland to talk about the deal some time next month.
"I've left that to my agent and I've heard nothing about it," Nakamura was quoted as saying by Japanese media sources.

Publication date 27/10/08
Nakamura has been a quality signing especially his first 2 seasons in the Hoops but if we can get anywhere close to the £7m rumoured then I would say Syanara(no idea if that spelling is right but I'm sure you all get the gist)
htdj
With 6 months left on his contract it seems like a no brainer.
£7m is almost the Champions League windfall all over again and would fund at least a Left Back and one other addition.
He is not gonna sign a new contract and I agree on his contributions but with the travel issues, age and a wish to return home he is not as effective as previous seasons.
Where is Koki Mizuno?
Is he hanging out with Joe Doumbe these days?
jinksyboy,
Is the '6 months on his contract' story 100% accurate? Do we not have the option to invoke an additional year, or did we already do that last year?
If we have the option of another year, maybe that is why Yokohama are talking about a significant transfer fee.
new article posted.
I would cash in on Naka because he is one of our assets and if we lose him for nothing then it's just a stupid decision. He hasn't been at the races this season and all that travel must tkae it's toll so if the Japenese want him (AT THAT PRICE) then sell, sell, sell. He was a great servant who for me has given of his best. We can use that cash to get guys in to secure 4 in a row which is the top priority.
After our injuries stop we'll get this show on the raod but we've been very good since August in the league and had the spirit. Missed the game at the weekend but saw the highlights - looked good stuff.

Why?
'Cos the context, proves without a Tint o' a Doot... the Truth in what I said,in May...right here on this very Blog, ladies and gentlemen... Ah Said...Ah Said...to wit....
"The Irish Politicos will make their Protests known to the Scottish Powers that be, regarding the scurrilious accusations and insulting implications for all Irishmen, that are contained in the Non Bio Degradable... "FAMINE SONG'. as is sung by the G.A. supporters...constantly and consistently, in order to create upset and consternation amongst the ranks of all of Celtica.
The Scottish Politicos and the Scottish Establishment, will listen..and after the Irish Contingent have left the building.. will.. immediately, send the protest manifest to the Office of Circumlocution, for unspecified action at an unspecified time."
Well, mebbe, Ah dinnae use those exact woids.. but the spirit of the muse is upon me this morn... and my literary juices are flowing..
Howevahhhhhhhhh...
I did, essentially, write the same thoughts and reached the same conclusion.
And...why was I so confident that naethin' wull be done, in roping in the vile actions of these cretins..by the Scottish Powers that Be..including the G.A. Administration, themselves?
Because, dear readers... The G.A. Support may be Vile in Ventiing their Vent..as well as their Vile Bile, aimed at the Decendents of the Irish People in Scotland...and by Osmosis, the Very Irish People ,themselves... The G.A. support may be all of these things and more...
But, they, those Particular Rancid Members G.A. Support, are the Children of the Scottish ESTABLISHMENT,and like all Loving and Doting Parents...the Scottish Establishment are no different.
A Blind eye is often cast ..or not cast..as the case may be or not be..on the Recalcitrant Actions of a Favoured Child.
As in this case...
Therefore,no Punitive Action or Reprimand will be directed at the Favoured Scions of Scotia..as is to be expected under the Political and Religious Conditions that are extant, today, in your Fair Land.
To endeavour to Put a Fine Point on it..
The G.A. Supporting Rabble..
ARE UNTOUCHABLE!
My advice, today.. is the same Tired and Annoying Beseechment,(to the Majority of my readers) that I have given, before...regarding the nettlesome problem of how to stifle this Putrid Band of Songsters.
And that Advice is...
Fuggettaboootit~
Nevah, evah, let 'em see ye sweat.

But,I will continue to Say it...and Keep on Saying it..

On Kris Boyd, falls fast the eventide;
The darkness deepens:Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
A helping hand to Kris Boyd let me be.
Come not in terrors,like Larsson king of kings;
But in Quasi Novo, hobbling down the wings
And should people ask for whom the bell rings
Say it`s for McCarthy and such quislings
Thou on my head in early youth didst smile;
And,though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me ,oft as I left thee
Or rangers players have left George Burley
I fear no foe with Boyd in rangers side
From berwick rangers, ayr or even clyde
Provided the ref ignores the offside
In every goal that`s scored by Kris Boyd.
So if you wish all fenians would go home
or cease their homage to the Pope of Rome
I urge all Scottish patriots, staunch and true
To elevate the light above the darker blue
