David Murray reeling after blows from John Reid
When asked by the BBC about his relationship with Celtic, a month after Dr John Reid's condemnation of Rangers fans signing the 'Famine Song' at Celtic Park, Rangers chairman, Sir David Murray, passed up the opportunity to condemn the song and instead exposed the distress the Celtic chairman has caused him:
"I suppose he [Reid} can say that because he knows he doesn't have to be re-elected to be Airdrie and Shotts again.
"I'm concerned by some of the comments. I give the utmost respect to Celtic football club, they've got a great tradition but I am recently a wee bit concerned by some of the inferences and innuendo that's come from John and I think he's got to be careful and realise he's not barracking in the house of commons any longer.
"We are in a society in Scotland where every point and every word is picked up by everybody and he should be very careful with some of the chat."
The health of Scottish society is paramount, we need to find a way of healing any football or ethnicity related wounds, but wounds are not healed by people in positions of responsibility avoiding offensive and racist material.
Rangers need to make their mind up, is the Famine Song harmless "banter" or offensive racism. I know Murray and his acolytes will have heard from some Rangers fans insisting that it is the former, but the club cannot afford to get drawn into semantics on this one.
The merest hint of racism, and "the famine's over, why don't you go home" certainly contains that, must be consistently condemned. Rangers must do everything in their power to ensure a coherent message is sent out on this subject.
Remember, "we are in a society in Scotland where every point and every word is picked up by everybody and he should be very careful with some of the chat."
This issue is not about Celtic or Dr John Reid, and with the passing of time it is becoming less and less an issue for most of Scottish society. Sir David Murray should desist from making innuendo about the values of the people of Airdrie and Shotts and join the rest of us in the 21st Century.

The BBC, that discredited journalistic institution have played a blinder here. Follow the link to the 28th September article regarding John Reid and you see this comment:
'But we are not complacent. I would again condemn, without equivocation, the use of any chants or songs which can be interpreted as support for religious or ethnic hatred, or for acts of violence'
Which is slightly different from the approach of Rangers which is more along the lines of:
'We are not complacent, we cannot condemn, without qualificiation, the use of any chants or songs which can be interpreted as religious or ethnic hatred because it is intrinsically a part of what we are, and always have been, as a football club.'
Rangers are far from complacent, they are much more dangerous than that!

Being the uneducated idiot that I am I would be very grateful if someone can please explain the above quote, taken from the BBC, to me
what exactly does
"can also be the chairman of a football club and come out with a different slant." What different slant ? different slant compared to what ?
"because he knows he doesn't have to be re-elected to be Airdrie & Shotts again" to be what exactly ? MP ? is he saying that he is now only saying these things cos he is no longer seeking re-election ?
Is the last paragraph Don Vito Corleone or am I losing it completely ?
Any help much appreciated

ItaliaBhoy, I'd welcome your opinion on the big build-up that the BBC has given to this tosh.
Have they really nothing better than this?
Could they really not have found a form of questioning that would have got Murray to address his own club's plight?
Roccobhoy
All depends on "Which Jinkysboy" he is talking to at any given time mate
Mcgraininspain, no, I’m pretty sure he isn’t trying to be ironic with “where every point and every word is picked up”, unlike every attempt to whitewash unpalatable nonsense as banter.
Citibhoy, it sounds like he has chosen which side of this debate to back.
Notoneofthepeepil, he has blinked first. It is too easy to keep a consistent condemnation of “offensive chants”. Any comment from a Celtic person on this subject is answered in the same consistent manner, but not Murray.
Roccobhoy, cheers.
Wicklowbhoy, it is indeed an attempt to bring us into their issue; this has been successful to an extent, though.

what is his Shotts/Airdrie comment supposed to imply?
why wouldn't John Reid condemn TFS even if he was running for office?
surely he's underestimated JR on this one...
tbdT
Its a brave man who would force a rottweiler into a corner.
Ill hold your coat David......
Hilarious by Murray, but then we have come to expect that from him. He is a pandering fool. What an opportunity to echo JR's comments and get the message across once and for all. No, too big a leap for our Mr Murray. He would rather not upset the baying bigoted hoards sitting in his stands every week....No Integrity, No class.
Celtic First
How do I do that and remain anonymous on the blog?
I find it staggering that Rangers still havent stated in the press their condemnation of TFS so far.
Bain and Murray have both now spoken about it without openly agreeing just how racist and offensive this song is.
Instead they warn the hoards that the police could arrest them therefore they should not sing it.
And now Murray is questioning Dr Reid's ability as a politician and a Chairman by trivialising his comments.
Murray's mask has slipped once again and what lies beneath it is not pretty.
He has answered the call to "stand up for the fans" and defend what the club is all about.
Unfortunately, for him, he is playing catch up to John Reid's accurate condemnation of them. A condemnation that can withstand the most severe scrutiny.
If we expect JR and Celtic to stand firm on this issue, then it beholds all Celtic supporters to stand beside them and listen to the strategy that they propose.
PS.
It is now official, Airdrie and Shotts are Bigotvilles.
citibhoy,
totally agree, this appears to be a threat, implying that scotlands shame are a higher authority than the law, (then again, the inaction by the authorities on TFS issue shows he may have a point), but telling him to be careful is IMO declaring open season on him.
Hopefully the chairman will not let this rest now, this should force the issue and hopefully drive the authorities into taking legal action.

Murray is once again appealing to the lowest common denominator - the typical Rearangers Fan
Two wrongs do not make a right, as my mother often told me
this seems to be their approach to their responsibilities - they do it just as bad as we do - why don't you give them a hard time as well?
as per the article from celticminded posted on the last thread - bring it on, we welcome the debate, we will clearly prove in any court that our songs are not sectarian, or bigoted but songs of an oppressed people looking for their freedom as per Flower of Scotland. Yes they may offend, however we need to be clear - they are NOT SECTARIAN OR BIGOTED
they, on the other hand are up to their necks in sectarian bile with their chants such as TFS
Murray, is worrying about his "re-election" so to speak, not just to the loyal following in Airdrie and Shotts but the vast majority of the Rearangers support - hence the reason he does not make it clear that song is unacceptable in a truly multicultural society of the 21st Century.
Come on David, It's time to be brave and say the right thing, or are you just pandering to "the FTP brigade" as you put it a few years ago.
Go on? Go on? Go on? Go on? Go on?
Desperate, desperate attempt by Murray to deflect attention from his own crumbling edifice in Govan. If anything, he just helps Celtic fans to unite around a common purpose. It is inadvisable for Murray to point the finger for obvious reasons - obvious to all except him. if he keeps up this approach, the unthinkable may well happen - Celtic fans will actually like John Reid!!
Keep up the good work, Zsa Zsa.
What Murray stated is without sense. His words suggest that our chairman has inferred something untoward, that there is some subtle criticism of what the huns sing.
As I recall John Reid did not speak in code, I think he slammed them, I think he referred to what that mob sing as 'vile'.
'Where every point and every word is picked up'? Well I hope so Murray. John Reid could not have been any clearer in his condemnation.

I don't know about anyone else but the picture I got in my mind when I read Sir Mintys comments were of a wee nyaff in a corner asking the big boys to leave him alone.
Is this the best he could come up with. Not being a journalist and having never interviewed anyone in my life, the obvious follow-up question to ask would be 'If that's John reids take on the famine Song, what are yours Mr Murray?'.
I assume this question would have been asked.
David Murray might be reeling even more when the analysis of the BNP membership is published.
If that ever happens that is.
I have no problem with BBC et al highlighting Murray's 20th anniversary. I do object to the tag that Murray is being interviewed. If the past is any guide, this will not be an interview but merely a statement from Murray. There will be no debate, no probing, no contradiction and certainly no disagreemnent.
Rangers may be Scotland's Shame but Scotland's media is complicit.
"We are in a society in Scotland where every point and every word is picked up by everybody and he should be very careful with some of the chat." That bit just jumps out and any interviewer worth his salt would seize upon it.
canamalar,
one thing is for sure John Reid will not hide although I hope he does hide. I think Murrays comments should stand alone for all to analyse and dwell on. Murray has yet again shown his contempt for the common man. A labour candidate will win the next Airdrie and Shotts election even if he is a Celtic supporter. You would think that Murrays mining connections would have assured him of that.
Murray is exposing his hand because he feels that he is not getting help from his old allies, hence the rise in temperature. I fee that it would be unwise for our chairman to get involved in Minty Moonbeams exit strategy.
Hail Hail

The game was a fantastic spectacle.
The young lads who stepped into the limelight to face the greatest rugby team in the world were outstanding, likewise those who, for some strange reason are no longer wanted by Ireland.
Peter Stringer in particular.
The city of Limerick was like a ghost town for two hours.
I couldn't get a ticket, but watched it on TV with my youngest lad.
O'Driscoll, Malfi, Howlett, Dowling, the whole lot of them, gave everything they had.
The look of fear and bewilderment on the Kiwis faces when we scored the try was amazing.
All in all it was a great boost for a great city that has been given unwarranted (in the main) publicity over the years.
I've always found Limerick people to be great supporters of ALL sports. The silence they give the opposition kicker, when taking a penalty, is unique in world sport.
As an outsider, it was the lads from (Celtic fans) Limerick, who gave me my appreciation of Rugby, a truly great game.
Also, there is a very large Celtic supporters club, Patrick Sarsfield,in the city.

It is near impossible to describe the pain of Gout to someone who doesn't suffer it.
Fortunately, there is something you can take that reduces the length of the episode, and which will stop an episode altogether if you take it when you start to feel the joint going gouty.

DBBIA wouldn't prescribe it, but he doesn't need to 'cos you get it off the shelf at any Herbal store or Boots type shop.

Just been reading some of the comments on the BBC Sport page in response to Minty's ramblings.
His followers are lapping it up and think he is now standing up for the fans.
They seem to think it's Ok to sing the chorus of the famine song as only the words in the verses are racist!!!
Re condemnation (or lack of) re the Famine song.
If it was Celtic that were in the situation where there was a song sung by Celtic fans that was racist, and which has led to diplomatic discussions between elected MP's / TD's and had an Amazon Forest equivalent in column inches written about it.... AND....which Celtic as a club had never condemned outright.....
...can you imagine the type of hounding questions put to our club on a daily basis by the Scottish Media, eagerly pursuing an official condemnation of the song or reasons why we didn't think it was racist?

It must be hard for David Murray. You really do have to feel sory for him.
The Chairman of a major construction company. The chairman of the 2nd best football team in the country. You have most of the sports hacks in the Scottish Press at your beck and call. Your companies have debts. Some would say massive debts. But what the hell! If they fold, you have more than enough tucked away to ensure you will be comfortable for the rest of your days
Your team's fans behave in a way that behind closed doors, you sympathize with. You know that they are wrong with what they sing, but it's only Timmy, so why should you care? And anyway, if you condemn them, you may as well make your way straight to the gallows. Unlike a certain Mr Findlay, you won't be caught singing any songs that could bring embarassment. These days you have to be a lot more careful. You never know which b****** might have a recording device that has you on You Tube so fast it could make your head spin
You can say pretty much what you like, and your friends in the laptop loyal will spin it in any way that is socially acceptable amongst your own hordes.
And yet, when a former political heavyweight decides to voice his opinion about the unacceptable songs being sung by your fans, you immediately bleate like a big Jessie. The fact the Dr Ried put his concerns in a constructive, and mature manner further sticks the knife in.
You really are pathetic!!!
Or even,

Yesterday, before the game there were many informations in the Polish TV about recent Polish - Irish connections. That was nice and well said about the Republic.
hello all,
It seems to me that Murray's comment about every point and every word being picked up is an unsubtle threat
Rangers/MIH employ Media House a PR company to represent them, and we have seen recent attempts, notably through the Daily Record, to put the songs and sectarian attention back to us.

Like him or not, John Reid has drawn Murray out.
If anyone thinks for a moment the Celtic Board hasn't prepared themselves for Murray's outburst then I suggest they are somewhat deluded.
Actually when you think about it....outrageous outbursts are becoming common place down Ibrox way isn't that right Walter....but I digress....
The totally racist Famine Song is now on the European Agenda. If Murray condemns it publicly he's mince with the followers of dignity fc.
If he doesn't he's condemned by all decent minded people as pandering to the bigots and the racists who follow the re-arrangers.
What does he do? Well the irony is he takes a swipe at the Celtic chairman who quite correctly raises the issue publicly and he refuses to acknowledge he and the club he owns has a serious problem.
He knows this will appeal and pander to the bigots and the racists to whom he needs to keep on side to service his massive and spiraling debts.
By doing this he is fooling no one and scaring no one either.
Well get yourself ready (no pun intended) Mr Murray....'cause the question is coming....and is going to be directed straight at you.

But is David Murray actually objecting to?
The BBC story http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/rangers/7738171.stm doesn't explain what comment is objectionable.
As far as I can tell, all that has happened is that John Reid has condemned those who sing the famine song. Is David Murray now saying that he disagrees with that condemnation whilst condemning the same song himself?

I dont work for the Beeb now so can't offer much inside info on this. However, my general thinking on Murray/TV interactions is:
1. Murray grants an interview
2. You turn up, turn the camera on
3. He gives a statement, which he expects to be carried unchallenged.
4. You put your journalistic integrity (stop sniggering at the back) in your pocket, and don't follow up any of his ridiculous witterings.
5. You return to base and continue the charade that David Murray is a) the most important man in Scottish football, and b) bright.
There is little culture of "challenge" in sports journalism. The whole thing works on access, not interrogation. Murray knows this and knows that people like Chick Young will never take the chance of losing access to Rangers (assuming they have the gumption to see through Murray in the first place). The Beeb employ Chick Young for his contacts book, nothing else. Certainly not his writing, appearance, or ability to string two coherent sentences together.
The good news is Murray has made an absolute fool of himself here. Condemn racism? Nah. Much better to cast aspertions on John Reid and the good people of Airdrie and Shotts.
Meanwhile the world moves on, and Rangers look more than ever, left behind by decent society.

This injury was caused by within five seconds of Mr G entering the pitch and having a kick at the opposing player he was then subbed and hobbled off the pitch to the great amusement of myself and nafos.

This is part of what david Murray said,
"I've done a fair innings with reasonable success. When it's time to walk, I'll walk. And I'll look back on it as an unbelievable experience and a privilege to be the chairman and major shareholder at Rangers."
I just want to highlight the fact he said he will "walk".
I knew he was kidding us on with those Tin Sticks he kick about in!! :) :)
Sick eh!!

Was his tongue in his cheek ( or was it simply added in later by the Media House Lackeys??) When he said "I give the utmost respect to Celtic football club, they've got a great tradition" Cmon this is from a man who HATES HATES HATES everything to do with Celtic Football Club, its fans and its people
Just a thought, but has anyone thought that Sir Minty isnt simply pandering to the bigotted bile of his great unwashed hordes with his comments, he is just simply stating HIS opinions and views and that HE is a bigot??

Only one I can think of is Peter and Kasper Schmeichel. Initially I thought Harry and Jamie Redknapp, but of course Harry retired from playing before the Premiership.

Phew!,
I read earlier about the interview with the bits that "Celtic fans wouldn't like" and I must confess I was a wee bit worried that some multi-billionaire had died and had left his fortune to Rangers....now THAT I WOULDN'T like.
If what, "won't be liked", is in fact Murray's ramblings, as quoted by Paul, hey, what's not to like?

I don't think Strachan's son has ever played for a Premiership club.
"Millar to Fergiehun, Fergiehun to whatever coo plays at the back for them, whatever coo plays at the back for them to Murray, Murray passes it back to the keeper, who's behind the goal chatting up some ugly orc..............and what an own-goal by Scotland's greatest ever living entrepreneur !!!!"

I've been left a bit speechless by Minty's comments. Is he saying that before Dr Reid there was some sort gentleman's agreement to point out to the world that the Rankers fans are foul sectarian, racist bile on the off change that the world wouldn't notice. Dr Reid's comments must have left Minty with a big scab that he can't stop picking at, and it's about to go septic. I can see Dr Reid in his office as we speak "Dear World, I told you they were scum, top to bottom scum. Yours sincerely etc etc"

You are in fact correct, just looked it up and he did play at Coventry while his dad was the boss. My humble apologies.

Any transfer rumblings?
I think we are rushing to condem David Murray at the moment. Wait for the full interview! He has nothing to go on, we think, so just wait and see what he actualy says.
My guess is that he will sidestep any direct question on TFS. As has been mentioned earlier he is between a rock and a hard place. Condemn TFS and he will be criticised by rangers fans for not sticking up for them, whilst condoning the song is just not an option. Remember, all DrReid did was describe TFS as vile disgusting and racist.

A spectacular own goal by Murray. Before today our support for our esteemed Chairman was divided to say the least.
If there was one way of getting the support behind John Reid this is the one I would choose.
I'd like to think that JR was clever enough to have engineered this but it's more likely to have been an accidental result of Murray's stupidity.

Murray - weasel words of the highest order.
I think he's made a bit of a blunder by picking a fight with John Reid - you don't get a parliamentary and cabinet career coming from Lanarkshire unless you can play politics to a very high level.
Whatever people think about Reid’s political career, he is the Celtic chairman, and what has happened today is an attack on him and our club by someone who has quite happily allowed his bigoted fans to pump money into his coffers.
Murray is a clown. He seems to think he'll be able to tell certain sections of Scottish society to shut up and get back down where he thinks we belong. Make no mistake, he's telling us to lie down and take it. Thankfully, the whole issue of THAT song has moved in to wider arenas...no hiding place now for Murray and his hordes.
STANDING UP...FOR CELTIC
Wee Chris Morris

John the Legend Hartson
Many on here, myself included, have called for an end to the OF tag and it's inherent tacit agreement to stand together in the boardrooms to ensure financial and political strength remains with the clubs.
It appears to me, and maybe I am just hoping here, that this statement and the expected retorts from Celtic Park, will lead to a distancing in the "special" relationship. If nothing else comes of it this will certainly be a major plus.
Minty has thrown his gauntlet down. He did not do so without careful consideration and advice regards the ramifications of an unprecedented attack on the Celtic chairman.
The powers at Celtic Park will have time to decide on a reply, and reply they must as not to would be to lose all credibility. I believe we have men at the top who can more than take care of themselves in a war of words. It helps to have right on your side.
Complacency can be dangerous. This "interview" was not undertaken lightly. The good guys don't always win so care must be taken.
We as fans need to do more to highlight the root of the problem. There was much printed and spoken of when a small number of fans left Celtic Park in protest. Imagine what would happen then, come the next Derby match, when the GA start up their bile in the knowledge that they have the backing of their board and mcuh of the establishment, if the whole away support leave the stadium?
No media would be able to ignore such a condemnation through peaceful protest. No amount of Media House spin would deflect from the problem. It would be picked up worldwide and the apologists in their club, the MSP's & MP's, the SFA/SPL and the countries excuse for a media would be shown for what they are. bigots or cowards.
Yes the board must reply. We as fans must also continue to bring this racism to as wide a public as possible.
Not long ago a member of their supporters representatives openly advocated civil unrest amongst his bretheren and escaped condemnation. We can rise above this, it will carry more weight and escalate the problem within our country to a new level. We will not win the argument in Scotland, sad to say. We may win if we take it to a larger audience. Peaceful Protest.......then Right Will Win.
Robbie Earnshaw is the answer.

The summer spending whilst both necessary and welcome eventually happened and has in my opinion only cemented the fact that there would have to be players leaving in January to balance the books. We have seen the same situation in the last few years and whilst this is neither new to us or exclusive to us, it is a fact of life for us bears that we approach the bells that ring in the New Year with a little trepidation as to which of our star players will be leaving the club before the month is out.
It is reasonable to expect that with the current numbers in the first team squad and the near-panic buying of late August that we really need to get both high wage earners off the books and transfer fees into the bank. So who then is up for grabs this January?
The simple answer is everybody!
This being said, we can attempt to narrow it down a little. My odds-on favourite to be sold was Kevin Thomson. With WBA sniffing around previously and with his good form for us, a £5M bid was on it's way this January. His season-ending injury at Kilmarnock will have had our Chairman and CEO quickly looking for a plan B.
Out of our usual starting players, Weir, Ferguson, Papac, Lafferty, Miller and Novo don't fit the bill. Weir and Ferguson are too old to command a big enough fee. Papac has just signed a new deal and looks settled here. Lafferty has not had enough game time to impress enough to even recoup his huge £3.5M fee, never mind make money on him which most bears would think is the long term plan for him. Miller wont be sold as Smith went out on a limb to get him and he is playing regularly. Having not had a successful season in the EPL with Derby, it would only be a Championship side that would want him, and I doubt he would move after only six months back to that level. Novo has attracted interest before but as long as he is getting regular appearances he seems settled enough.
There are also the fringe players who could be moved on. The problem with the fringe players is that if they cannot command a regular game for us, nobody is going to come in with big money for any of them. The wage savings are helpful, but we need substantial transfer fees to come in.
Hemdani looks likely to leave, but for either no fee or a nominal fee. Darcheville also looks likely to go back to France and we may get another nominal fee there. Velicka could move, but again we would not even recoup the fee we paid. I can see Dailly moving to a Championship side for no fee just to get football at his age. Adam, McCulloch and Burke don't look interested in moving anywhere, even on loan. Stevie Smith and Steven Naismith wont attract any attention due to their lengthy injuries. One of Graeme Smith or Alexander could go, but only if McGregor stays, and more on him later.
This leaves us with a core of nine players who could achieve a transfer fee if sold in January. From this list we can probably cut it down even more by removing the two Americans and the two Scottish defenders. Edu has not been here long enough or had enough game time to be moved on, so I cannot see him moving on so soon, especially given that he is young and we paid a lot of money for him. Beasley could be attractive to sides back in Holland or MLS, but given his injury problems and inconsistent form, we would probably not be receiving any huge offers for him.
Whittaker could be an attractive acquisition for some English sides. His good form in our European run and that fantastic goal wont have gone unnoticed, and a versatile player is always a good buy in mid-season to cover injuries in more than one position. Given that we paid £2M for him from Hibs, I hope it would take a bid in excess of this to be acceptable to us. Broadfoot is probably everyone's "most improved player" and has grabbed his chance since Hutton was sold last January. It is no surprise to me that some tabloids are starting to talk of Championship sides looking at him with a view to a £2M bid coming in. These stories wouldnt surprise me if they actually came from Bain himself, and with Whittaker already here most of us would accept big Kirk being sold for a fee in that region.
This leaves us with our big five in prized asset terms. McGregor, Mendes, Bougherra, Davis and Boyd.
There has already been numerous stories about McGregor leaving and I can see this happening, especially now that Thomson won't be sold this time. Any bids in excess of £5M will be accepted, and if he can get back into form between now and then, the fee could approach the Craig Gordon level. Mendes going back to Harry, now at Tottenham is an easy story to make up given Harry's annoyance at him being sold from under him at Pompey. Spurs will no doubt give their new manager some money to spend and if he wants Mendes back, a fee of around £4M would see him sold.
Bougherra has also been mentioned as a potential target come January, although comparisons with Boumsong and Cuellar are wide of the mark in my opinion as he is nowhere near the same class as those two. However we need the cash and any offer of over £3M may see him move on. Davis is another quality player who could easily make it into most EPL sides outwith the top 4. Having worked so hard to come here I doubt if he would be willing to walk away without a title and the difference with him as opposed to Mendes and Bougherra is that he is a real bear himself. However money talks and any bid of around £5M would see him pushed out. Boyd is another real bear who wont want to leave and it is hard to judge just how big a fee it would have to be to be seen as too big to refuse. I think any fee around £3M would be considered and we would be reminded that we only paid £400K for him.
It is thought that we need to bring in around £8M this January to make up for last summer's spending. Look through the squad for yourself. Who wont be there on 1 February 2009? It obviously depends on who we receive bids from and the value placed on the players from prospective buyers. Unfortunately we are not in a position to say no to any bids that are deemed to be realistic. It no longer has to be "a bid we could not turn down" as we have been told before with Hutton and Boumsong or "the player had a clause to let him go" as we were told about Cuellar. We have been told no such clauses exist in the rest of the squad. I just hope that we don't accept bids that undervalue the players and that we hold strong for realistic bids. Unfortunately Murray and Bain don't have such a good record when it comes to this kind of bargaining.
The finances are of course an important part of the running of the club and none of us want to get back to debt of £80M, but most readers of this will really only be interested in knowing that we have not, again, sold our chance of both the title and automatic qualification for next season's Champions League group stages. That is what we really want. Will Murray and Bain listen

It's not all that clear what David is getting at. He's obviously deeply unhappy with John Reid but he can't quite bring himself to say why.
John Reid broke with tradition and refused to sing dumb about TFS. The Celtic Chairman - with commendable bluntness - has acknowledged the presence of a racist elephant in the Ibrox stands.
Incidentally, the Scottish press will never tackle David on this or any other contentious issue. He must be the least scrutinised figure in Scottish public life. The best you ever get is wee Chick lobbing a few well-vetted questions at him.
Mind you David always looks distinctly uncomfortable when operating outwith his Scottish comfort zone. Remember that young girl from Panorama a few years back?
Finally, there are Rangers fans who find TFS offensive. Mr Murray's equivocal stance on this issue has totally undermined any decent Rangers fan.

Theres people who will think that this is bad press for Celtic,I can't see any bad press coming to Celtic.Me,I think it's the rants of a very sick man,And I should say I pity him? but I wont.
Paul's correct in his summation that SDM should and could have solved some of the inherrent problems that are ingrained into the very structures that are Ibrox Park.

2003 GRAEME SOUNESS - THE DAY I FEARED HE WANTED MY BLOOD
The hotel cellar bar, an hour after the filming of the $#$@$# @#$%#$ *&%$$ &^%$#$ Awards, is a mass of sozzled luvvies, daytime TV celebrities, and journalist execs.
From out of the scrum of backs a stocky figure in a dark suit turns to show me his bronzed face and moustache, gives me a steely glare, grabs my hand, crushes it, then mutters in a sinister Edinburgh drawl: "Ah, the bast**d who got me the sack. I've waited 10 years to meet you."
Oh no. It's Graeme Souness. Now I really need a drink. Because if his memory is as good as it seems, pretty soon I'll be lying on a hard bed with the signNIL BY MOUTH hanging above my head. Me and Graeme Souness had history.
I wouldn't go as far as to say I got him the sack when he was Liverpool manager. He made a good fist of that himself. I just tried, very hard, to ensure it happened.
In fact, I tried relentlessly in my *&%$@*^$# &%$# column for 20 months, from the day he hoovered up blood money from the Sun on the third anniversary of Hillsborough until the day he walked out of Anfield in January 1994. A walk that lifted my soul more than Nelson Mandela's stroll from Victor Verster prison four years previously. "You two bast**ds at the @#$%. You and @#$%$# #$%$#. You made my job impossible," he said, still crushing my hand and moving his face closer to mine, making me think he was about to do an impression of his doppelganger, Yosser Hughes, and lay the head on me. Then he smiled and offered me a drink. And we talked. A decade had passed and he'd mellowed considerably. Until I told him that whatever I thought of him as a manager, he was one of the greatest players ever to wear the shirt. That's when the charmer vanished and the snarler came back out.
"Awhh, do me a favour, will ya? Don't patronise me. Every time I meet a Liverpool fan they tell me I was a fantastic player but a sh*te manager. And it p*sses me off no end."
I said nothing. I didn't need to because my eyes said it for me: "But you were, Graeme. You were."
If I became a bin-man tomorrow, I'd have Liverpool the cleanest city on Earth
I realised I'd never heard such clear footballing logic in my my life. He had clinical authority
It triggered relieved laughter from sycophants in the Press pack as he stared at me triumphantly
If his memory is as good as it seems, I'll be lying on a hard bed with the sign NIL BY MOUTH
