Ominous looking Celtic after 9 games in 23 days

| | Comments (435)
It is perhaps just as well there is no Richter scale-type device capable of measuring profanities, as a new record would surely have been recorded in certain parts of Scotland at 15:46 yesterday.

After several good performances, inspiration deserted Celtic and we watched yet another 11 v 10 performance that defied conventional wisdom, as so many of these games do.

The Celtic midfield retreated from their recent high standards, the strikers didn't score, and the defence seemed troubled by what little work they had to do.  But as we both know, these are the days that win league titles.

Yesterday was Celtic's ninth game in 23 days, a period which saw the club suffer as comprehensive an injury crisis as I can remember, but when all domestic games were won.

I was delighted for Paul Hartley.  His winner was not the first important goal he scored for Celtic, but it is yet more evidence that he has the skill and character to make important contributions for the club.

There is only one thing to say to a team who have won 10 league games in a row, make it 11 on Saturday, go seven points clear and let the rest worry about their place in the world.

The champions are looking ominous.  Again.

Hail, Hail

podium

Podium?

nearly?

Been out-n-aboot for the weekend.

My view on yesterdays game.

3pts won and more than likely we'll have a couple more performances like that over the coming season and take 3pts in the main.

anyway back to work.

hail hail

just about to post and paul sticks up a new article , and now I've forgotten what I was going to say

From last thread - sounds like we're on exactly the same page then!

Raveheart

Yep, I was thinking the same thing - nice to get back to a bit of healthy debate about the team...

Paul67 - "It is perhaps just as well there is no Richter scale-type device capable of measuring profanities, as a new record would surely have been recorded in certain parts of Scotland at 15:46 yesterday."

It was as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

Hate it when that happens. I'm sure it was insightful and witty and would have us all roundly nodding in agreement. Maybe! ;-)

Paul67....

Any Word on Nakamura's Contract Talks....????

o1bhoy

Paul67

Just got round to actually reading the new article - well said. Again.

I too was delighted for Hartley - his celebration was brilliant. The pure joy on his face reminded me of a kid who's scored the best goal of his life!

Not sure about the booking though.

EHIY

exiled - i better not post as I can't live up to that billing :)

Paul67

I remember When Kenny D scored he always had a beaming smile on his face - a la Paul Hartley

01bhoy - from last post

Dempsey is a complete chancer. He got in with Fergus and the rebels and used his friends in the media to position himself as a main player...he promised £1M for the share issue. When the rebels had won, wee Fergus asked him to stump up the cash he had promised but he didn't but he still expected a prominent place on the Board. When Fergus told him (quite rightly) where to go, he used his media pals to have a go at Fergus and the new Board as much as possible and of course the old media were only to keen to oblige.

Galloway has been one of his proxies for a while (as has Charlie Nicholas)..it's been a while since I heard his name mentioned but obviously he's still trying to get on the Board.

Sorry Paul but we should be focusing on is the negative here.
From 'Washed out Celtic' ref: evening times to Referees blundering in our favour to injury crisis at the club.

I object! Why write something positive about our club if you can write something negative instead? Surely to God you can find something negative?

Oh well, I guess for now we will just have to focus on the fact that we have won our last 10 in the league, are in the semis of the league cup, are enjoying the exhilarating excitement of the champions league, are 4 points ahead of rangers, are financially better off than rangers, have a stronger squad than rangers, we will/can be buying in January and not likely to sell like our 'for every fiver....' socially unacceptable neighbors.

Donegal Danny,
If you were in that temp stand, did you get a good view of why Hartley was booked yesterday?

PS Agree that Hinkle was woeful yesterday. Brown was ok but also agree he does not yet inspire confidence. Donati...Didnt notice him much, not sure if that was a bad thing or a good thing.

Man On,

Im going to looking out for your post during this thread. (if you dig it out of your memory banks)

Im sure we are ALL looking out for it haha!

Morning all. Estadio here. It’s been so long since I contributed anything that passwords and logging in criteria are shrouded in the mists of time, so I am amazed that I could still log in!

First a massive thanks to Paul for publicising my scary venture, also everyone who either posted a response to the article or e-mailed me with their or other contacts’ details. I will reply individually to each one over the next few days.

The responses are phenomenal in their geographic spread!

Among them are USA, Canada, Mexico, Spain, France, Italy, Poland, Brazil, Peru, Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, China, Azerbaijan, and even Airdrie and Bearsden!

To date I have over 80 different locations!!

I would also like to thank those who have kindly offered advice, guidance and even organisational support in getting from A to Z, acquiring visas, avoiding diseases and other things that can’t be published on a family blog. Every one of you is a star and I will be getting back directly in the coming days.

As my planning takes shape I’ll let you know what is happening and anything solid in terms of blogs, articles, routes etc etc.

Unfortunately I have limited time at the moment on the internet as in an attempt to save a few bob, I discontinued my home-broadband, so it’s a max of 2 hours per day at the library.

Once I get my mobile capability up and running later this month I should be able to keep you more up-to-date with progress.

Once again thanks for the tremendous response and who knows I may materialise in a place near you in 2009.

By the way please keep the responses and suggestions coming to msincent@yahoo.co.uk .

Hail Hail and best wishes

There were a load of bad issues yesterday, but my favorite left back, made it all worth while. What a difference he made to the team when he came on.
I was begining to worry we were reverting to last years form when we lost Boruc, and it apppeard to be going that way, but as MrStrachan has said before we are much stronger than we were then.
Hail Hail.

Nakamura scores in Celtic win but aggravates knee injury
Monday 17th November, 05:30 AM JST

HAMILTON, Scotland —
Shunsuke Nakamura scored his fourth goal of the season as Celtic beat 10-man Hamilton Academicals 2-1 on Sunday but the sheen was taken off the win after the Japanese playmaker aggravated a left knee injury.

‘‘One of their players got on top of the injured part of the knee,’’ said Nakamura, who leveled with a 38th-minute penalty after Richard Offiong had headed the home side into a surprise lead. ‘‘It still hurts,’’ said Nakamura, adding he will still be joining up with his national teammates in Doha on Monday for Japan’s World Cup qualifier away to Qatar.

pablophanque

I feel a bit like donati here lots of promise , bags of skill but can frustrate and disappoint all too often

bit like yeterday , first half hamilton were up for it and we needed to win the 50/50 battle and with brown right side , robson on the bench and donati centre mid we were not at the races

2nd half with hamilton retreating and robson on perfect for mo to take a grip , didn;t really happen once brown went central with caddis wide we started to at least push them into their box and the rest is as you say history

think as gordon says horses for courses and donati is one for celtic park at this stage , leave love st for robson, brown and harltey

From Randalstown...................

"THE controversy surrounding a "vile and racist famine song" which is being sung at Irish players in the Scottish Premier League is to be raised in the European Parliament today.

Last night, Fianna Fail MEP Eoin Ryan, who is writing to all Scottish MEPs seeking their support for a stamping out of racist chanting, said the actions of some fans were "utterly despicable and totally unacceptable."

"In particular, they are chanting what is known as the 'Famine Song', which is a vile and racist song and which calls for Irish people who took refuge in Scotland after the famine to return home to Ireland," he said.

The song is being sung by fans unhappy at Scottish-born players who have declared for Ireland, namely Republic of Ireland and Hamilton Academicals midfielder James McCarthy.

Mr Ryan, who is one of the authors of a key European Parliament report into the future of soccer in Europe, said that one of the major aims of the EU White Paper on Sport is to eliminate racism in sport in Europe and, in particular, at soccer matches around Europe.

Labour TD Tommy Broughan said numerous constituents, who are long-standing Glasgow Celtic supporters, had contacted him about an alleged upsurge in racist abuse targeting Irish fans, especially at Celtic and Rangers matches.

"One constituent who has been a Celtic season ticket holder for over 20 years has found this development particularly distressing given that he often brings children and teenagers to Celtic matches," he said.

The Scottish FA has stated that the problem is being addressed by the Government, police and football authorities."

Lubo1977....

l Doubt with his Heart Condition he is chasing a place on the board l think Salmond just thinks he's the man for the job also after the takeover both his businesses failed, you can't give what you don't have.

As for his media pals, could we not be doing with pals in the media

l personally wouldn't call him a charlatan more a Celtic man that wanted the best for his club, and he probably more than most helped us get it.

l suppose whoever we bring in someone wont like him.

o1bhoy

Didn't realise I could celebrate a win against Hamilton with such zeal. 3 point is 3 points is 3 points.

Just caught on the radio this morning that Rangers were to bid for Jonny Evans. Took me by surprise. Anyone else catch it?

Terry Mac last thread excellent point about making the ball do the work, this would also open up space to shoot from distance. I also beleive that inorder to provide more variety in our attacking options we need more movement from our front and attacking midfield players. All too often we attempt to walk the ball into the net, quick incisive passing opens up defences

lubo1977 - I would be very surprised indeed if the Celtic Board wanted anything to do with Brian Dempsey. I'm not surprised to hear George Galloway talking him up though, they strike me as very similar characters.

o1bhoy

I'm with lubo on the Dempsey issue. I'd be as enthuiastic about Brian Dempsey on the board as I would be about David O Leary as manager!

corrib4

He ran down in front of our stand after the goal and was booked for being too happy! superb refereeing as always eh?! although to be honest we were going too crazy to notice!

Corrib 04, good point. The shirts were too green yesterday.

China's main TV station has stopped broadcasting matches from the country's top football league, accusing players of lacking "professional ethics".

China Central TV (CCTV) has temporarily pulled the plug on a league that seems constantly beset with problems.

A scuffle broke out between players of two top teams last week, while another team has been ejected from the league.

The head of CCTV's sports channel says the league must improve before it is allowed back on air.

In an interview with Titan Sports, China's top sports newspaper, Jiang Heping, head of the CCTV sports channel, pointed the finger at the players.

The state of Chinese football at the moment makes everyone feel bitter
Jiang Heping
CCTV sports channel

He told the newspaper that every week brought fresh bad news about players, who he said were letting down their fans.

"Some lack even the minimum professional ethics," Mr Jiang said.

"The state of Chinese football at the moment makes everyone feel bitter. If it goes on like this, it's in danger of being thoroughly destroyed," he added.

Mr Jiang said the ban was only a temporary measure and did not mean CCTV would completely abandon the Chinese Super League.

But he said things needed to change for the better.

'In danger'

However, that looks a long way off, with the bad behaviour of footballers dominating the headlines again last week following a match between teams from Beijing and Tianjin.

A scuffle broke out that eventually involved team coaches. Reports said that after the game angry Beijing fans laid siege to the Tianjin team bus.

A team from Wuhan was also recently thrown out of the league after refusing to play matches in protest at a ban given to one of their players.

Football is popular in China, but the domestic game has long been in the doldrums.

There have been problems finding sponsors for a competition which attracts angry crowds, and has problems with match fixing and bribery.

The national team has done little better.

China qualified for the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea, but results since then have been poor.

The team currently languishes at 98th in the FIFA world rankings.

Paul,

I think it was nine games in 29 days. Anything less than that and we would have been due a one week extension to the season. We had a good November last year as well. Although we only played four games, two champions league and two SPL, we won them all.

December was the month that created the illusion that Rangers were in the driving seat. We dropped nine points, and had our game against them postponed. An improvement on that should see us in control for the start of their January sales.

My Point was, as l stated on the last thread so does Naylor we gave him a contract so we don't lose him on a Bosman....

Why not Naka ?

well said on Mr Hartley.

He looked delighted and a few pounds lighter with glee.

Did anyone else get one of these letters from the SFA ?

Dear Mr H,

as a valued customer of ours, and a supporter of Scottish Football, we would like to make you aware of a major initiative we have put in place to make the game more fun, more accessable to the general supporter and offcourse

Drawing your name at random from the Hampden Debenture seats database, and based on your seat location and your uptake of tickets only for Semi Final and Final matches, we are aware that your allegience is to the Celtic football club.

Based on this , we would like to invite you to take part in the initiave, and give you a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually take part in a match.

If you would like to take us up on this offer please report to St Mirren football ground on Saturday at 11am with your football boots, and you can be the Linesman for the day.

Here you will meet with our referee for the day Mr O'Neill from Coatbrige, and your fellow linesman Mr Cassidy from Croy.

Further to this, in another first for the SFA, we have agreed a cross border agreement with our cousins at the Irish FA to extend the scheme to foreign nationalists, and this means that the 4th official will be Mr Finbar McGuiness of Dundalk.

I hope you can join us on this great day,

Finally please join us in congratulating our winner of the "Your the ref" competition, Father J P McCool of Saint Columbas parish in Garngad Glasgow.

Father JP chose to referee a future Aberdeen v Rangers match.

Watch for more exciting updates in the future.

Is it not 9 games in 29 days?
The 1st of the 9 was on the 18/10 against Inverness, the last yesterday the 16/11.

The reason I ask is the mighty rearrangers had 9 games in 28 days at the end of last season,(celtic 27/04 - aberdeen 22/05) which according to some derailed their quest for an unprecendeted quadruple.

Surely we should have got an extension?

Could you tell me the flight times you were given for your Ryanair booking?

o1bhoy

Not sure if Dempsey on the board, even with all his media pals would be a good thing.

I've never known Celtic from dressing room right up to the boardroom to be so water-tight as far as "leaked exclusives" and "a Celtic source said..." and i think this has a lot to do with who we have on the board and in the management set-up.

Although the tabloids still try and unsettle us before a big game, it is happening a lot less these days, thank God we are no longer "pals" with Keevins, McNee etc as they were treacherous in their reporting, especially at the most inopportune moment for us.

They must have been aided and abetted by some inside CP and it seems to have stopped. What we don't need is someone coming in trying to put HIS spin on things, to the detriment of the club.

To me he is a Celtic-minded business man, but not a very good business man. So just a Celtic man, then.

Just my view of it

Hail Hail

It wasn’t all cutbacks, either. “When we had won the league for the second time I said I was going to Rome with the family for a few days,” recalls McLeish. “We had done this deal with EasyJet, but David said, ‘As a thank you, I’ll put on the [private] jet’. So we relinquished our tickets for about £500 and had a few days in Rome and then he flew us back again. It was stunning, a phenomenal gesture.”

There was also a common touch. One of McLeish’s favourite parts of the week came at Ibrox on Saturdays. “He would come in about 12, and we’d have a roll and square-sliced sausage with our respective brown and tomato sauces and a cup of tea. That’s when he would tell me the team, so I am blaming him for that last year.”

Lennondinho18

Thanks for that. Thought that might be the case.
Hope not though.

Lennondinho

Based in Paul67's financial predictions for the Dark Side I doubt they could afford me in Jan never mind a promising Man Utd first team squad player!!

paul, fellow CQN'ers...

whilst i've really enjoyed the free-flowing, one touch football i've seen so far this season, i think yesterday's game was an example of what's to come in away games as the winter takes hold and the pitches turn to mush!!

i think it's vital we keep picking up the 3 points whilst the pitches are still ok because we're sure to drop some points in the coming months.
it's just good to see the FOD have already been dropping points whereas we've generally destroyed the opposition on the own patches.

i finally caught the re-run of wednesday's match this morning and was really impressed with massimo.
does anyone else think WGS maybe have told hm that now, whilst other players are missing, is his chance to prove he is worth keeping? i think that if he fails to assert himself in a handfull of ganes he'll be out of the team again, and for good i'd expect.

hopefully he realises this too and grabs the chance with both hands as i think he's potentially a great option for the wide open spaces at paradise (not convinced about those tight wee grounds in the middle of winter though...!!).

hail hail from thailand (tropical storm approaching as i type...!!!).

the perma raging on my train this morning were truelly upset at the names of officials now being appointed , and i quote,

"i mean its obvious aint it, all the Conroys in the Port are tims, so it stands to reason dont it"

lol.

its only taken 100 years to get some "balance".

lol

O1Bhoy Nakamura's wife wants to go home so that their eldest child can be registered in kindergarden....it will be too much culture/peer pressure if their children are not quickly re-integrated into japanese society before they reach school age...to put things into perspective imagine if you had japanese children who had been schooled outside japan and they were unable to recognise the japanese alphabet before school (japanese cram schools even begin in kindergarden) even with private tuition in scotland nakamura's wife would be extremely concerned about their children adjusting to their native country before they get much older. Culturally many japanese spouses and their families struggle with homesickness and lack of self confidence outside their native country. I only hope that when naka goes home at the end of the season that we retain koki mizuno for at least another year and therefore hope that koki gets some serious 1st team action during the remainder of this season

empathisingwithreversecultureshockcsc

Sunday was too close for comfort,I think the majority accept collectively we were below par, however knowing that the Accies have an excellent midfield why did we elect to go with a pairing which was not succesful in previous games and does not have the energy for a combative game.
Donatti likes time, skilful as he is,he is not the man for a brawl, likewise Naka complete with bandaged knee,(excellent penalty),again I cant get my head around why he played on Wed.then again today, now the injury is worsened as it happened in front of the tent I was in,irrespective of all of that, he still is going to Qatar, cant figure the logic.
So from a Managerial standpoint given the need to bring back the injured and rest the weary, why is Naka going to play for Japan and I believe up to 6 others to play Argentina?? at the rate other teams are removing players it will be a Celtic select, surely they should be told to drop out,as we owe the SFA nothing.

paul67

yes credit, where credit is due and we should congratulate ourselves in the celtic media, because we sure as hell won't get it elsewhere, especially after a a game like yesterday.

wgs has the winning habit well established in premier league games. how many were surprised when we got the winner?

but caution, as there my be trouble ahead robson filled the left back berth better than wilson but he was under no pressure unlike the hibs game at celtic park where he was found wanting.

its a problem that won't go away, i also hope artur is restored quickly as i've never seen a stand in keeper that stood out, and mark brown's unwillingness to come of his line will cost us, against a better team.

Pablophanque

M8 Services, Harthill, Today 11.00

Cardinal Brian O'Keefe: My Lords, I would like to introduce you to His Grace, Archbishop Osvaldo Ayala of Buenos Aires. Valdo is in Scotland in his capacity as Chaplain to the Argentine Football Association. If we can do the creeping death thing, lads....

DC: Dario Conti, Archbishop of Glasgow - I'm afraid I have no interest in the beautiful game, Valdo. What is this Celtic ?

JD: Joe Divine, Bishop of Motherwell, frequent visitor to Paradise although my nose was literally blue a while back. Welcome to Scotland, Valdo, and to the very extremity of my Diocese.

RC: Roy Carvery, minute-taker. Are we ready to proceed ?

Senga: Yous gonnae hurry up ? Wu'll be needin they tables in a minute fur the Eastern Stor.

O'Keefe ignores Senga and brings the meeting to order

BO'K: Welcome to the Hard Bean Cafe. I thought it would be a good idea to meet halfway between East and West in the finest tradition of episcopal convention. Harthill, once hostile to the Church, is symbolic of the coming together of different Christian cultures, the Constantinople of the modern era.

JD: And this will be the Synod of Whitburn ?

BO'K: I'll do the jokes, Joe

Senga: Yous finished wi they cups yit ?

BO'K: Basically we're here to call off the dogs where the dissident Republican, Winston Gemmell AKA Dick Collins, is concerned. Quieta Non Movere as they say in these parts.

DC: Who is this Gemmell ?

BO'K: It no longer matters who he is, Dario. Your old buddies in Italia have come to his rescue. Apparently he has the ear of Cardinal Mazzola of Milan.

DC: A hallowed relic ? Surely sacrilege. Theft of a sacred object must surely result in excommunication.

OV: A bit like the Hand of God ?

BO'K: No, lads, no. Gemmell-dash-Collins has influence amongst the Italian Hierarchy, something to do with gold telephony and cheap wine. Ring any bells, Joe ?

JD: Buckfast - the scourge of our diocese, Brian. Can we not excommunicate the misery-manufacturing Devon monks along with Gemmell ?

OV: This Buckfast is a highly-valued wine in Argentina. It complements our world-famous beef dishes.

Senga: Gauny yous drink up ur Ah'm gittin the polis.

BO'K: Gemmell lives to fight another day but I intend to be in regular contact with his Parish Priest who will monitor the rebel's movements. In the meantime we allow full access to the Sacraments and Votive Candles for Gemmell and his alcoholic adherents. I trust the recent price increase has been imposed ?

JD: Not without some controversy, Brian. Apparently the self-same WinninGemmell has imported some 24-hour-burn votives from Milan. He's Hayes-and-Finching our business, lads.

BO'K:Vox populi, vox Dei. Let it pass. Valdo what's on your agenda for the rest of the day? Can we drop you off somewhere ?

OV: Today I visit Celtic Park with Diego and the boys. Tomorrow night I am a guest at a dinner being held in Falkland Palace by Sir Gordon Duffield.....is he of The Faith ?....

Plod: I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to vacate the premises, gentlemen. Senga here requires your table for her sisters from the Order of the Eastern Star. Move along now... let's be having you.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

GD(on phone): Brown Browning Senior, please

Bertha: Who, may I ask, is calling ?

GD: Sir Gordon Duffield, Chief Executive, Scottish Football Association

Bertha: You've got a damned cheek phoning here, Duffield

Bertha reluctantly transfers the call

BB: Brown Browning, what do you want Duffield ?

GD: It's not what I want, it's what you want, BROTHER Browning.

BB: Out with it, Duffield

GD: The Argentinian FA are accompanied by a cleric who has contacts with ABBA

BB: Tell me his name is Fernando

GD: Valdo. He's connected to the Argentinian Boiled Beef Agency.

BB: And ?

GD: Peppered steak slices........ an economic miracle made in Ayrshire.

BB: Who is this conduit ?

GD: A Cofflik priest by the name of Osvaldo Ayala, nephew of the elegant Ruben, the Sanddancer of Santa Fe.

BB: I remember him.... Atletico Madrid. Love the club. Great strip.

GD: We're having a small dinner tomorrow night if you'd care to join us. It could be to our mutual palm-greasing advantage - only don't mention the 'grease' word.

BB: I'll think about it, Gordon, call you later.....

Naka will be going to play even if he can hardly walk

he wants to play for Celtic AND his country badly

however silly that may be in terms of making any current injuries worse

same as he wants to go home in the summer

to be added to previous point

Its up to Naka and he wants to play

although I think they could maybe just about pull together a bag a baws to buy you ;)

Does anyone have any info on McGeady's injury and whether he has a chance of making it for Saturday?

They can pull together as much as they like becuase I still widnae play for them!!!

Helicopter

I dont think so

i think he is out for another 2 weeks

he is DEF out of the Ireland squad on wednesday which is a shame as he has been excellent for Ireland recently

excathedra the celtic players benefit from playing together in the scotland squad (long may it continue)fitness improved understanding...match time also increases confidence Many professional footballers always prefer to play matches rather than sit in the stand...i was pleased to hear gordon strachan's enthusiatic reply to chick young's loaded question about the availability of celtic players for scotland....remember how gutted barry robson was (and celtic were rightly furious) when he was sent home on disputed doctors advice from a previous call up. The celtic players will only benefit from playing against argentina and it will be a welcome challenge for mcmanus and caldwell to pit themselves against maradona's men

Hello to:

Jim Shun in Perth Australia

Lennondinho18
I understand that, but perhaps GS has to protect him ( and the others ) from their own enthusiasm as they are contracted players to CFC, and as we seen in the Samaras debacle re compensation, the national teams tend to use and abuse leaving us a problem at club level.

Was sicky bad last week and after watching that performance I nearly had a relapse!!

All that can be said about it is (the phrase my Da hates above all) well its 3 points.

However it would be remiss of me not to congratulate "my hero" on a wonderful goal. The joy on the man's face lit up the whole place and I too have it as my desktop and another one as the wallpaper on my phone.

A Celtic fan scores a goal like that to get the three points for Celtic, no wonder he got booked, probably thought it was worth it.

If it was me I'd still be running round New Douglas Park.

Yes l know all that and totally agree with it.... me and Kitalba discussed it when the story first broke....

What l am asking is.... are we letting him run down his contract and go for free....or is it agreed he will leave in January and we will recoup some funds....

Koki will stay if given the chance IMO....

Naka will DEF NOT be leaving in January

he has said so, as has Peter Lawell

he would not have signed a new contract, even if it meant we were able to get some money for him, as this could possibly have prevented him returning home if no one bid for him

I wish he would stay longer, esp to help Koki settle but there is no chance Koki leaving anytime soon either

he has a long contract and has now started to break into the 1st team

very true mate but i think the final decision will be down to the player

plus Naka is leaving in the summer so will want to play in EVERY single game, even if it means being sore

What is refreshing about Celtic in these days shadowy agents and dark forces, is that Celtic no longer have themselves dragged through the press everytime somebody joins or leaves the club. I'm not saying we're not splashed all over the back pages, but most of it is empty tittle-tattle made up by the papers or agents, when in years gone by Celtic were their own worst enemy. If Naka goes because he wants or needs to go back to Japan, then we'll miss him because he's quality and I'm confident that the SSM will be burning the mid-night oil to ensure that we get the most we can for him. In years gone by he'd have gone back to Japan and we'd have had to pay his airfare!

Does anyone know why the pitch was watered at half time yesterday? I'm unaware of the climate being notably drier in Hamilton than in Lanark and we certainly haven't been experiencing a draught here.

I'd agree that we'd be happy to collect 3pts when not playing well on poor surfaces.

Only thing is that from what I saw, that looked like an excellent surface yesterday, they even had the hoses out at HT to add an extra bit of zip to the pitch.

I would say normally that would suit Celtic, but when facing a 5-4-1 reverting to 3-4-3, it was hard to get to grips with them at first.

A no-frills, gritty, sleeves-rolled-up performance and we may see a few more but as you say, if the end result is 3pts, we'll all take it.

O1Bhoy Koki is still a young lad a long way from home do not underestimate the effect of nakamura leaving unless koki is a regular in the first team squad. When I lived in Japan there were daily english newspapers, a bilingual news bulletin twice daily on the national TV Network(non-cable/non satellite). There was any amount of international foodstuffs (even 10 years ago !) Contrast that to the facilities available for Japanese in our country most alleged asian foodstuffs in the uk are of chinese as opposed to japanese origin...

It must be the Lanarkshire connection!!!

I was raised in the sprawling metropolis known as Halfway, Cambuslang. The 67 bus used to go through our bit and right past Douglas Park!!! We never got off there though...

For a newly laid pitch (they had astro-turf til last season, or the one before) it was in great nick.

Have to agree with our leader writer, its games like yesterday that win titles, lets be honest we were crap, but they were crapper, if such a word exists, captain caveman took his goal on the volley very well which caps as good a spell in the hoops as I think he's had, Mo Mo super Mo (v2) may well have sneaked off to watch the EPL game on the telly cause he vanished from sight for 85 mins and Cap'n Mick, bless his cottons, will never be a world class defender, but will normally play better than yesterday,

I still say that if we win at the hunnery in December the games a bogie, tea and medals all round and lets look forward to season 09/10.

Would be nice to see a couple of class acts recruited for our Uefa cup run though

I can't believe the hysteria from the media about this penalty. The daily ranger is quoted as even "it was at least a yard outside" ! At least a yard at sprint pace is quite a difficult call to make but not as diffiult obviously as McCurry's 2 howlers for them against Dundee utd. Boyd's 1 yard offside call and now this penalty are getting more attention than the disgraceful and blatant cheating of decsons made by the reverand which had no defence. I like most now don't buy nor pay attention to the Scottish media and just stick to sites like this and the View. Every trick will again be used this season to stop 4 in a row.
p.s. Hartley has really changed my opinion of recent and is probably the 1st name on team these days. Keep it up Paul

You've been away too long - it's THE Halfway.

And WDH, don't you start

WG,

My first ever alcoholic drink bought in a pub was given to me by BFDJ in the Star Hotel in Harthill. Poured by a minion handed over to me personally by BFDJ. He owned that pub at the time. I was 15?? Considering that I still could pass as an under ager today ;-) I find that a remarkable event in my life. ;-) BFDJ ( A hall of famer now ????) would never take advantage of Sectarianism, under age drinking etc.

I had went fishing with some mates to Forest Field on bikes and on the way back we thought we´d chance our arm at getting served and though and behold I managed it much to my older mates delight.

When I got home. My ma smelled the breath and I dont think I have ever seen her looking so horrified when I owned up to having my first pint in BFDJ´s pub in Harthill. I shouldn´t have lied about the size of the fish I caught it was a dead giveaway.

Hail HAil

I thought the penalty was harsh (but not the sending off) although as way of explanation for the mistake, contact was made twice with Sheridan...his foot was clipped and then his arm was pulled. The foot clip was outside the box but the arm pulling was inside the box. Now obviously the foot clipping was the first foul and if the whistle was blwon for that any "foul" after the whistle doesnt count...but perhaps the ref / linesman didnt see the foot clip and gave the foul for the arm pull - which did happen inside the box.

Still, whatever happened it was far less of an obvious mistake than the penalty Rangers got against Kilmarnock last week which neither Jeffries or the old media made much of an issue of....

inkybhoy

Come on pal, only away 3 and a bit years! You don't write "THE Halfway, Cambuslang", you say it!!! We share a "THE" with Gorbals, Calton, Garngad, Wyndford and Faifley. Can anyone think of more areas that naturally have THE in front?

Its actually more like The Hawfway, the "way" bit pronounced like "wi" in wine. Thats Buckfast wine, of course.

craggy

On the "lucky" penalty yesterday my thoughts:

McDonald, McGeady, Boruc, Loovens, JVoH injured.

Naka, Samaras not fully fit after injury.

Hardly good luck. It was obvious first half yesterday that without a forward who can hold up play and take pressure off midfield and defense, that we were toiling. Yesterday we ran out of those kinds of forwards.

In that respect it was a fine result and it also shows what a great job McDonald has been doing recently.

The arm pull did not bring Sheridan down, it changed his body shape so that instead of falling forward in a controlled fashion, which is what we ALL do when walking or running, Sheridan lost control of where he was going to put his feet next. JVOH got a penalty v St Mirren for the same reason and that caused an uproar in redtopland. You do not need to swipe someone's legs away to stop them, just alter their natural forward motion control body shape.

That it took another yard or two for complete loss of control to become obvious does not mean it was never a penalty. What makes it never a penalty is the fact that the foul that initiated the penalty took place outside the line drawn on the park within which a penalty is the award for a foul. That is the rule but in yesterday's case the award of a free kick would not imho have been sufficient punishment for the crime.

For prevention of clear run in fouls that happen outside the box, I would rather see a direct free kick awarded just inside the box with no wall in line with where the foul occured with no sending off than the current rules. Call it an Unfair Play Penalty. The sending off is not a deterrent and spoils the game.

So technically it was not a penalty but it was a just reward for the foul.

inkybhoy

I have mailed your home as this is no place to talk to your like.

All this fawning over murrays 20yr stint at iborcs
is grovelly pass the
sick bag reading

although a former director at the hunnery and a hun historiahun
see it differently

HUGH ADAM former director

I AM slightly biased. I honestly don't like the man. I have respect for the way he has overcome his disability but that's all. There have been too many mistakes and the things that have been good have come on the back of other people.

Financially, it was big donations from other people that bailed him out and although he may have convinced them to give the money, that well seems to have dried up now. The stadium development was already under way when he took over. With certain managers Murray could not separate his personal and business judgment. They didn't need Mo Johnston – Souness should have been playing Ally McCoist.

David Murray was too loyal to some but he wasn't loyal to everyone. When people disagreed or had served their purpose and he was finished with them, he just got rid of them.

The question you have to ask is whether in the past 20 years someone else could have done better and the answer is definitely yes. He has been treated to more respect than he is really due. He should have done more to ensure there were better young Scottish players coming through instead of wasting money on people from outwith.

ROBERT McELROY Rangers historian and author

INITIALLY everything was rosy in the garden and there was the success of nine in a row but when hard times came, people found that hard to accept. But it deciding whether he has been good for Rangers you always have to bear in mind what the alternative would have been. Remember, Robert Maxwell was also in the picture and you have to wonder what might have been if he had got control.

The club has achieved great success while David Murray has been the owner and chairman but it has also accrued massive debts.

I remember one AGM when he waved away concerns about liabilities which at that time were about £25m. He said he wasn't interested in balance sheets, it was what happened on the field of play that bothered him. Within a few years the debts were three times that and the success wasn't what everyone had hoped for. His problem was not adapting to the Bosman ruling quickly enough which meant that we wasted money and when Halifax merged with the Bank of Scotland, the cosy relationship he had with Gavin Masterton was affected and he suddenly faced more restrictions and that was when the debt became a problem.

I dont think we have too much to worry about come Paisley,I actually expected Love Street to be the potential banana skin as we were due a bad spl performance but the way I see it is its came n gone, weve had our scare n the players will know or have been reminded of the importance of an early goal playing away,we still have plenty in reserve for this game if everything goes well with Maradona, with Brown back in the middle with Hartley Id like to see Caddis start out on the right with Wilson behind him and Robson pushed back into LB again,Hinkel was awful and he can be "rotated" for me.Sheridans done well and with Skippy back it might be good to stick with him n give him confidence but deep down Id like to see the Bhoy rested on this one,if Samaras is fully fit we need his galloping runs and his strength to barge through what'll be another packed defence,Im not sure if Maloney needs a rest but he's definately better in midfield without the pressure of relied upon to score so Id have him working with Robbo onn the left as he'll be able to create something from one of Barry's rampaging runs.Hope so anyway,I have no worries for Sunday if theres no more injuriousness against 'tina.

celticlover

I would like to join your game but don't know diddly about stocks and shares. Maybe beginners luck might play a part in this game?

Bradford Bhoy

This weeks game against St Mirren is Sat @ 12.30pm, just incase you sleep in for it

Hey,

Yesterday's performance was pretty grim but 3 points is all that matters when we are underperforming. Just look at the amount of crap performances from the darkside last year and they still managed to come away with all 3 points!!.

It just goes to show the job that Scott McDonald does for us up front. Running the line chasing and niggling defenders, holding the ball up not to mention the amount of assists he has produced this term. I think he is underated by many supporters(Possibly due to those nighmare events at firpark all those years ago). I was one that had my reservations when we signed him but for me he has exceeded my expectations and probably WGS also. Shaun is not striker and big sheridan although doing well is still raw so we missed the little Aussie bitting the ankles ofd defenders..

Any Thoughts Guy's??

I think you're right about us missing Skippy yesterday. He took a wee while to get into his stride (and was taking some overly harsh criticism on here too) this season but he's been a great signing.

His link up play still needs work and his 2nd touch is still too often a foul, but he's still learning his trade at a big club like ours. I think he's still 23 or 24 so he's got plenty of his best years ahead of him and his goal return last season was tremendous.

I was one of the ones calling for another striker in the summer and still wouldn't mind another quality addition, but in Skippy, Sammi, JVOH and Sheridan we've 4 decent guys with Hutchinson and Killen too.

WeeChrisMorris, agree that Shaun is wasted up front.

Regarding us playing 9 games in 23 days, over the last couple of days the laptop loyal have been falling over themselves to ask the cardigan how they're handling playing 6 games in 19 days, do we see an application for an extention on the horizon,

We were crap yesterday, but that's the games that wins leagues

Exiled Hoop

Sandaza?

Shaun isn't a striker - but he tries when played out of position. He us best linking with a frontman, as we saw in his play with Samaras when he rejoined us.

I think Sheridan has done very well for a kid who probably didn't expect such a run of games so quickly. He can be happy with what he has brought to the team and i hope this brings his development on. With a bit more strength and awareness he could almost be a young C Sutton.

Paul67,

IMO that Shaun could do the same job Scholes does for Man U in the centre sometimes.

wee chris morris

what has aiden been up to off the park?

I heard a wild rumour that newcastle were willing to let duff and given go in return for mcgeady but that may well be a tad much!

has anyone else heard of these mcgeady move rumours? would hate to see him go but in return for duff and given? we mebbe.....

DD

Bobby Murdoch,
Agree 110%!!!!!!!.

The press just poddle to Murray and Wattie every single week. I also want to mention the fact the Scott Booth is a Hun without the bus fare.

1. Boyd scores an offside goal vs Hamilton to put his side 2-1 up at a vital stage in the game. Scott booth comments that he can see why the linesman gave it!! WTF is he on??.

2. He comments that "Hartley could not miss", as he strikes the ball on the volley after a 1-2 with skoosh 16 yards out. Last week Huns vs Killie game on boyds goal who was 16 yards out also that "all credit to boyd, In the circumstance that was a really difficult chance"!!. Makes you want to wreck your TV eh?.

3.I read recent comments about the darksides home record in the league by 2 journalists as championship winning meterial, although i am still looking out for the comments that we have been unbeaten for 8 months away from home!!.

4. With the darkside beating the paisley rangers 2-1 on saturday the talk in the papers was "rangers keep the pressure on Celtic". Nothing mentioned the fact that the only pressure in recent weeks was the fact they have dropped 4 points vs D.Utd and Motherwell. When we dropped points at inverness last year the Press were all over all that represent celtic like a rash. When we dropped those points then won our next game there was no "Celtic keep the pressure on Rangers!!. 2 words Daryll King!!.

Cheers m8.

WGS, I am unfamiliar with the work of Scholes.

Donegaldanny, no chance.

Paul67

no chance him leaving? no chance duff? no chance given? any chance of anything?

DD

Donegaldanny,

Lets just say Strathclyde police have been in contact with PL at celtic park on his off the field conduct!!. Although Aiden is a target of abuse like 99% of our players and officials i am told his m8's dont do him any favours at nights out. Sometimes the target off abuse is aimed at people that just go autograph hunting as opposed to the sectarian element.

Hope he stay's all the same Danny.

Cheers

donegal danny damien duff no thanks not the same player he used to be not that i rated him anyway (perhaps in his early blackburn career..but he's definitely gone off the boil at newcastle even making allowances for his injuries)
Also probably can't afford to pay either (certainly not both of their inflated EPL salaries which would be in excess of 50k each basic )

WeeChris/ Craggy island,
Me thinks all those free mid weeks are getting to them, there's only so many repeats of the Bill you can watch, and don't get me started on Booth, he must have photies of somebody tae keep that job, it's not his knowledge of football, but he sure hates us

Paul67,

Ghosts into the box type player that makes his move from the centre of the park. Scholes wa a genius at this. Could pack a shot like Shaun as well and score the spectacular.

Just logged on and notice Brian Dempsey getting a mention. When the old board were still in place and he was part of the rebel group I attended a supporters rally in Irvine that he spoke at. He was very much pro us moving from Paradise and told everyone that the ground could not be developed as there was a requirement for ambulance access at each corner and it could not be achieved.

He asked for a show of hands on how many wanted to stay at Celtic Park and seemed astonished that the vast majority did. He said he had been to several rallies and this was the first time the vote had gone that way.

After that always a bit suspicious of his motives

Bradford Bhoy

Sandaza's looked a decent player and a handful when I've seen him (which is not much) and he seems to know where the goal is. But I'm not sure he's the type of addition I'd like to see.

Is he better than what's there? If not, there's no point - I'm not keen on this habit of taking the best of the rest and then not playing them.

Any idea how old he is?

Sorry to sound negative but if we add a striker I want someone who can genuinely push to be the first striker on the team sheet. I'm not saying he couldn't but I definitely haven't seen enough of him...

Hope that makes sense!

EHIY

wee chris morris

I had no reservations whatsoever re McDonald having watched him over a few games v Celtic. He holds up play, brings others into the game as well as being a natural striker. Everything that Chris Boyd is not.

OK his form dipped as has Maloney's recently but they have both proved they can do it in the SPL. I have seen no evidence yet to support the case for Donatti starting.

Caddis on the other hand put in more telling crosses in 20 minutes than Hinkle in 90 and he will become a starter.

http://www.thescottishsun.co.uk/scotsol/homepage/news/article1937649.ece
The bit about what he called PVH when he missed a pen, should mean this lowlife should be branded a disgrace, and he should be declared persona non grata by the SFA and all media outlets.
Don't hold your breath. He is one of their own.
It was probably only banter.

Paul.

you have mail.

I read Billy Reid today saying that it should never have been a penalty yesterday. Fair enough. I have no argument with that and more than a little sympathy for Hamilton who were giving it their all.

However, he then proceeds to suggest that it possibly shouldn't have been a red card either. Sorry Billy, but you're having a giraffe. And that extended whinge took the shine off of the original point.

Paul.

Warringtim @ 4:58 PM....

Thank you for your reply Re; BD....You Have Answered My Original Question....

o1bhoy

My recollection of Dempsey is of him touting a field in Robroyston as the site for the New Celtic Park.

Also, I have an unfounded suspicion that he had a hand in the undermining of Fergus, when the wee man was fighting for Celtic on all fronts, i.e, even with people within the club, who should have known better.

Apologies if anyone has posted on this topic already.

I woke this morning at 7:30am and switched on Radio Scotland,as the news story trailed off the announcer handed over to the sports desk. I immediately tensed, hackles rising as i anticipated the onslaught to come about our penalty yesterday, instead those with the Red,White and Blue disease were completely shafted as the biggest story of the day by a country mile was the sensation about the arrival at Glasgow airport of the sensational Diego Maradona. A smile quickly formed as i realised that Rankgers "meeja peepul spin meisters" had been usurped by "The hand of God" Thank Gord :)

I have previously stated my reasons for purchasing the rag - John Hartsons and Billy McNeils columns , but once bought i find myself brousing through the rest of the dirt it puts out.

I'm glad you have mentioned it though because apart from this being disgusting behaviour - egged on by that rat Donald Findlay who is supposed to be an iconic figure in the great British legal system ( we all know what Findlay and Goram are like , thats not the point ) these comments didnt appear to be condemned in any way at all.

Like you say , we are supposed to just swallow this as banter and carry on reading bout the likes of poor Graham Roberts who apparently felt like doing himself in over being called a racist !!!!!!!! what a shame , i dont think.

I know as well , if i get any replys to this post it will just be from the faithfull advising me not to buy or read the filth but some habits die hard , apart from that and my usual reasons for buying the scum and the rectum , i like to see what the enemy and the eejits are saying , even if articles like these make my blood boil !!!!!

Sir Paul

Foist... a comment on your commentary..

Excellent,my good fellow, Excellent!

And written with elan, in a loose iambic pentameter, that ain't so bad, eether!

Always keep a weather eye out for how loose, one's pentameter is flowing.

Be that as it may,my friend... I am prompted to say at this point... the following... for no other reason, being, than that.

Molly, is not pulling his weight.

There I said it... and I will continue to say it.

The Left side of the defense, shall always be a vulnerable spot, for us.. as long as it has a Player, Like Molly in the Midfield.. in the Past ...it was Aiden... Yes, you hoid that right! Aiden..who is not tracking back, after losing the ball.

Aiden, has since improved in that capacity, although, in his attempts to remedy that situation, he is liable to do more harm than good.. because of his illegal tackles..

Howevah...at this point in my diatribe, I am not discussing the de merits of Aiden...we shall leave THOSE, for another day.

Molly, I am sorry to say is a what I call a Luxury Player.. and.. while I am at it..it is also my term for, Naka..and to a soiten extent.. Aiden, as well.

Although, these Two worthies, can on occasion, shake off that Label.. and take the Game by the Scruff of the Neck..and pull our Chestnuts from the flames.

In the Case of Molly... I do not think that he qualifies in those terms.

Moving on..

My player for Droppage,then.. is...

Molly.

I think the time has come for giving others, a term of trial, in Molly's position.

Koki Bendi? Sure!

Padraig? Why not!

Being of an adventurous mein.. I personally, would

Give..

Mark Millar/Miller a term.

This young man has everything, and in spades, that both Aiden and Molly are missing.

Yes, I believe that I just hoid the call from the Bar..

"It's Millar/Miller time at Paradise... roll up, gentlemen, and enjoy!"

Hi Gents,
Just want to know your thoughts on this bit of news i heard in the last hour.

From a close source it has been brought to my attention that Aiden is destined to leave in January for a top premiership team. Newcastle have no chance and i dare not say who the team in question is but lets just say this team have been keeping a low profile in the media, but not on the scouting front to secure his services. There has in fact been an approach for his services to WGS and PL by 2 other premiership clubs keen to get the ball moving in the Jan Sales. Word from paradise is that business is most likely to happen due to his off the park events. The 2 clubs that have expressed a desire to buy him are only going to ensure we receive top dollar from the club who are most likely to secure his services. The only snag in the sale hinges on aiden's off the field behaviour over the next 6 weeks.

What's your thoughts?

Thx

You Don't Have a Wee Cousin Called Josh Do You....????

o1bhoy

WeeChris ( you're not, no, you couldn't be the West Walian version??) I know not if there is any accuaracy to your inside info. However, I suspect Aidan is not as settled post Maloney's return as prior. I also think Aidan has more to offer than Maloney not that that has much to do with the price of bananas...

Paul

I love when Celtic give you the putty and you mould it into a piece like above - great stuff - not smug, not condescending (To our many opponents supporters), but praise where praise is due - and clearly focussed - Us - Not Them - Us.

Watched many MON games like that (Sometimes with 11 vs 10 going the other way)

My wife said, watching the 'super sprint' of Hartley after he scored - 'Goals like that in games like that win you leagues'

I quite the fact she said 'leagues'

Has a nice ring to it.

Paul the blog's been great this past month or so, mo matter the highs and lows, feelings and tempers - a testament to your administration. Thank you.

U

Nobody does paranoia like us!

In the "Seville season, in the early part of the season when it was nip and tuck Rangers were either playing against 10 men or getting a good share of penalties (six to our one).
It was that bad I started to keep stats on it.
It was the season they got 3 penalties at Dundee and missed 2 which got them a draw. They got 11 penalties that season and played against 10 men in 11 games in which they collected full points.
We got 8 penalties and never faced 10 men.
Funnily enough we did get a penalty against them at Ibrox to get all three points which had an "evening out" effect on the points gained as the result of penalty awards, but I do not remember many Ranger's supporters on phone ins complaining about the decisions that season. When we did it was "yer paranoid". The argument that the UEFA Cup run had also caused us the league was also dismissed. Funny that.

For some reason the match official's decision shoe appears to be on the other foot.

I wonder if the explanation on the penalty numbers given then is as applicable now. That is that the best team with the best players CREATES situations where a penalty might be awarded. If you rule out the three penalties at Dundee then both Celtic and Rangers were almost equal in terms of penalties given. There is no explanation for the disparity in ordering offs but who knows what part they played in the number of points Rangers gained that year?

Paranoid? We can teach them

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend .. WeeChrisMorris.

I myself, have, in the past.. drawn attention to Mr.McGeady's off the field .. Bad Form.

A lack of moderation in the Consumption of Liquid Libations( Ur there any ither kind/...ed)( I am Sure there ur... But at the moment .ah canny think o any! )is not a most salubrious past time.

And ..therefore,my friend.. I am not averse to hoping that your intimations of where Aidens future Soccer Home, shall be... have some truth in them.

Personally, I would place calls to all Agents.. that Mr. McGeady is now an expendable Celtic Asset.

I would Cash in, forthwith and without preamble, on this most saleable item..

Re 5.52

I sincerely hope your inside info is innacurate as i dont see us as a selling club and have always viewed Aiden as a through and through tim who would only leave if pushed. I dont believe Celtic would move on a player , especially one with Aidens talent due to a few minor incidents off the park , he is still fairly young after all.

Hail Hail

Brother Johnbhoy

Sorry if its already been mentioned but does anyone happen to have stats for the following...

1 - How many games did the Orcs have to play in how many games towards the end of last season when they got their 4 day extension?

2 - Can anyone post the stats relating to their wins away from home against the teams that finished top 6 last year?

I know someone will have them out there and it will give me much ammunition for a surprise assault on the Orcs in the office tomorrow.

Hail Hail
Gogo

Kojo,
"BUDDY",

I would love to see Aiden stay in the historic hoops, but his off the field scooping sessions with friends who are more or less making the decision for WGS pretty easy in my eyes...oh and yours!!. Im told he is being pretty much auctioned off down south and as previously mentioned the fact that Strathclylde/Govan Police :) have contacted our Sharp suited Man on more than one occassion to try and curb his and his friends crazy behaviour.

Now i know some of the fellow hoops faithfull will argue that he is provoked by Scotlands Shame. This in fact i agree is true, but the fact that he was seen with one of his m8's standing on the bonnet of a taxi is just crazy behaviour given the fact the city centre is covered with camera's everywhere and not covering the fact that if the driver of the taxi decides to move he could be seriously injured.

I seriously love Aiden as a player and hope he "screws the nut", but he is making WGS and PL decision an easy one at this moment in time. My thought's are that when/if he does get sold, wee strachen's in for a hard time from the fans....but truth be told he is giving Celtic a pretty bad name with his off the field behaviour. No player is bigger than the Club!!!!!!!!

Exiled Hoop

I dont know his age but he looks to me to not just be "the best of the rest" I genuinely think Utd have found a diamond in him, playing in an attacking side like us with better players round him and dare I say getting decisions in his favour,I could see him being an SPL golden booter, definately!

I always thought the job of management was to get the best out of employees.

If McGeady is having off the field problems surely the only approach is to address them rather than "sack" the employee?

McGeady strikes me as an immature lad who is learning about life the hard way (from experience rather than the easy way of taking advice - hands up all those who chose the easy way), what better place to do that than at Celtic?

Stupid rumour that does not reflect well on Celtic if the way of handling it is actually true.

mb 1964

the shame of that mob just never ends!

Bradford Bhoy

Sounds like you've seen a bit more of him than me. And I'm not denying that occasionally a diamond in the rough turns up at an unfashionable club - look at Zaki at Wigan for a perfect example. He's on loan there, but after a fantastic start to the season he's being linked with a move to Real Madrid! Now that might be codswallop (blog rules have forced some creativity!) but the point is he was totally unknown to most on our strange little island until Steve Bruce plucked him from Egypt(?).

Sandaza might be similar (ok, forget the Real stuff) but you know where I'm coming from. If he turns out to be a superstar I will make sure you get the credit deserved!

EHIY

Apparently Sandaza will be 24 on 30th November.

Presumably that makes him eligible to play for Scotland:o)

mb1964, 5.10pm - that is hunbelievable. For what its worth (very little I suspect) I e-mailed this response to the 'paper':

I have read this article and felt compelled to write. I have no interest in the love-lives of either Alan McGregor or Andy Goram.

However, I am very interested in the quote from Goram that he referred to a black Celtic player as a “non-white, unclean, non-Protestant with no father”. It is not too difficult to 'translate' this statement as Goram referring to the Celtic player as a 'dirty, black, taig bastard'.

Given the little I know of Mr Goram and of attitudes prevelant within the Rangers support I am not especially surprised that Goram would make such a comment and that the gathered Rangers faithful would find it so amusing. I am however shocked that such evident rascist comments should be reported by your paper without any condemnation. Indeed, such comments should only be printed in the context of a rationale explaining your condemnation or should not be printed at all (oxygen of publicity, etc).

I would be interested to hear your comments.

Thanks,

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend... WeeChrisMorris.

In one of my many critiques on Aiden.. I used the Dreaded, "P" woid,in describing his current Performances in Celtic's Colors..

Yes.. I admit it..and Boldly...

I am most disheartened by Aiden's present presentations.. he is not improving along the lines, that I and many others hoped that he would.

So, I was therefore forced to use the Condemnation Card..and say...

" Aiden, to my utter dismay.. has...not shown any signs of burnishingf the dull sheen that is now the color of his contemporary performances for us.. so therefore.. I Pronounce.. and with NO MALICE AFORETHOUGHT..

Aiden has ... PLATEAUED...

And from there ..there is only one direction to go.

His recalcitrance has not helped to endear him to the Powers that be.

Unless, he straighten up and flies right..

I for one.. would not miss any sleep over his departure.

We have proven.. well proven.. during his recent absence.. that he would not be missed.

Kojo.
yer pal..who likes ye

Don't know how much truth there are in these rumours but I've always thought McGeady came across as a lad with his head screwed on, that shunned the pop in his youth to make the grade as a player. It would therefore seem strange that when he's well on the way, he might shoot himself in the foot.

His Dad seems to be a strong influence as was Tommy Burns - I can't really see the club taking the easy way out and just punting him.

I might be wrong though. It happens. Sometimes! ;-)

EHIY

Hi Auldheid,
I agree we should deal with the issue(s) inhouse but there's only so much disciplinary action you can take (i.e.) dropping the player, hitting him in the pocket and giving him the hairdryer treatment. The fact he was The best player in the SPL by a country mile and he signed a lucritive deal seems to have had a bit of a "Jack the Lad" attitude when his off the field actions are concerned. His on the field performances have somewhat dipped as well.

As i mentioned previously i hope we dont sell him as i think he is dynamite but you need to offload problems which effect the name of your workplace and i think this is an avenue the club as following.

All the info i have received on his off the field behaviour is 110% true. I would not post it as a rumour, as i like Aiden McGeady very much as does the majority of our fans.

Cheers M8

Kojo

Maloney is not doing what he has shown he can do i.e be a major influence on the course of a game.

I think injuries have postponed the day he is rested but just who might take over in the creative role is perhaps a matter of creativity. For example I think we both agree Caddis has "got it" could he be a replacement?

Maybe once we have two recognised front men back WGS might be prepared to be more creative?

WGS

You lost your vililance? Or, what?
Free the Munich 1 ! Podolski out of the squad, in conflict with the coach. Bayern is going to buy Archavin. The best for Poldi is to go abroad.

WeeChrisMorris

If he has a behavioural problem then he needs behavioural therapy. He could be given the ultimatum of choosing that or leaving.

Then it is his choice not Celtic's and the consequences will be McGeady's to learn from, just like everyone else.

Exiled Hoop

I probably havent seen much more of him than you but his performance against us and the hun coupled with his ability to score against the "weeir" teams has made my mind up,imho there are plenty, plenty worse than him in the spl for a start, keep an eye on him and btw if Im proved right you can buy me a pint in Bennys.

Zybsek,

Take Podolski in a heartbeat.

I'm on the FREE THE OWEN 1 campaign this January. On a Bosman this summer

What do you know of Miloš Krasić? Next best thing in Serbia currently playing for CSKA Moscow. Compared and if not better Dejan Stankovic. Did you see the Ajax v PSV game. Ajax defender Thomas Vermmalen is the dude for me this season. I like the look of this guy

Swap deal with Barcelona for Messi.

Heard it here first!

I don't think Aiden has plateaued (definition: a relatively long period of stability); I think his form dipped this season before showing a slight improvement and then being injured.

There are, in fact, 2 directions you can go from a plateau; the land can rise again or it may fall if the plateau is the peak height.

You should only sell the top talent in your team (Artur & Aiden in our case) if a) they are desperate to go.
b) the cash offer is more than they are worth
c) the cash offer is close to the best we can get

If we are heading into a credit crunch, are we likely to get the price we could have commanded before or the price we may get again in future if conditions improve?
Is Aiden desperate to go or is he temporarily upset that Shaun is favoured above him though he is not as good a player?
Is Aiden really on the ran-dan as much as wechrismorris suggests? Would our Celtic-loving polis and tim-friendly press really co-operate in keeping such behaviour out of the courts and the press?

Surely Media House and Sir David's press lackeys would be playing this up for all it's worth?

File under overblown claims csc

WGS

That's not the same name you quoted earlier - which also wasn't the guy's name:o)

I don't think we have played 9 games in 23 days at all.

your either talking nonsense, or whoever is whispering into your ear is quietly talking nonsense.

if off field behaviour was the barometer then the frequently hammered frequently smoking scott mcdonald would be the 1st out the door.

mcgeady has no off field problems. mcgeady will not be leaving in january. that my ill informed friend is 100% true.

mb1964

Just read the link you posted. Sick, sick, sick.

I remember seeing Sky footage of Goram mouthing pretty much everything he refers to straight after the penalty. How he can wallow in that speaks volumes for the man.

Here's hoping the pub is closed down before long, this man still trades off his links to bigotry, racism, sectarianism and associations with parmilitaries.

craggy

It ain't going to be Spurs. That's all they need. Another wide player/AM...Bentley, Lennon, Modric...

Now if we were talking about someone who plays a tad further back then I'd imagine ol' Harry would be interested.

And I can't imagine Wenger looking to the SPL for new talent. Doesn't seem his style.

Other than those two who else would be worth leaving for...? (Infact, count Spurs in that as well)

I just mentioned two :)

If it's Arsenal then i reckon 12 million and Bednter will suffice. GS is admirer of Bednter. Did he not try and get him on loan a couple of years ago when he eventually went to Birmingham?

If it's Tottenham then £12 - £15 million will do for me. Get Suraez in from Barca as his replacement for peanuts and we are laughing. Got to remember with Tottenham that they supposedly spent 9 million on Hutton. They recouped quite a bit of cash in the summer as well. I think PL will get top dollar for him. If i was Celtic i would also consider getting Giovanni Dos Santos as part of the deal. Re unite him and Crosas from their Barca days. Out of the picture with Redknapp and he is Mexicos golden bhoy and would add to our global appeal. If Naka goes we need to get some kind of player that could replace him. I was suprised when Barca let Dos Santos go, but then again they got Bojan and Messi.

I doubt Dempsey will be involved again as he has health problems and is currently recuperating in Caribbean. Was it remotely possible that had we got a free rather than a penalty that Naka would have scored anyway ? Anyway I reckon Cillian would have scored so a free would actually have penalised Celtic. All quiet on the Aiden front does lead to the Rumour Factory in full flow. Any word on how he is ?

Sutty,

Modric more effective in the middle of the park just playing of the strikers. He's playmaker more than a winger. Think Harry does not rate either Lennon and Dos Santos, which suprises me. Good chance it could be Tottenham.

El,

Apologies my spelling of his name not that good:)

Thomas Vermaelen - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Vermaelen

Milos Krasic

He is valued very high in Moscow. I don't think the price is less than 8, or 9 m Euros for the player. From the stats, I have learned his goalscoring ratio is good. He scored again last week, against Rubin.
I did see only two games this weekend, you know which two.

Zybsek,

Let's get campaigning

WGS

No probs pal.

I'm looking out for you:o)

I can see you going into overdrive the closer we get to the window opening.

If it "slams" shut - how does it open?

WGS,

Harry has far more pressing needs to attend to. A good, consistent DM. A keeper for sure. A good defensive left back as Bale is a liability in that sense. And a new centre half. One look at King and Woodgate's back catalogue and you know either or both could go 'crock' at any time. They want Corluka to play as a centre half but he's still learning that position.

I very much doubt Rednapp would be after another winger/AM above those other positions.

Zybsek,

CELTIC AND ?????

Surley with all these players that get mentioned on this board, somebody one day will sign:):)

WGS

I wanted to keep it as the secret, especially second team: Celtic and Legia Warsaw.

On what Galloway says about what the handling of TFS says about the establishment:

The buck is not just being passed, it is being kicked to death in the process.

The buck is short hand for responsibility and when no one takes responsibility ANYTHING GOES.

What it says about the establishment is that the establishment is (Irish) racist.

We all instictively knew this but with each passing day the evidence in the form of responses from government and police (has anyone asked the SPL/SFA why they have done nothing?) is accumulating to prove what instinct told us.

Of course when the evidence has been accumulated who can you put it to?

It is 2008 and Scotland is still living in the previous century.

Makes it a lot harder for Celtic to encourage civil behaviour in supporting Celtic where it is perceived that ANYTHING GOES.

Celtic should be made aware that the false veils of action are being pulled aside day by day and be ready to state their position in the absence of direct action by the establishment to address the issue.

(For all the good heaping shame on shame will do but at least everyone will understand just how institutionalised Irish racism has become.)

Quiet without Jinkysboy.

Settingfreethebears,

Why would i lie that Aiden is causing grief. As for the comments around our tim friendly press, i have noted now on two occassions that he has made the front page of both of hunlands leading tabloids!!. Darren O'dea got jailed. Why?, For trying to calm aiden and friends down and lashing out at a hun for singing the Famine song in his face. Low and behold Aiden and friends get a taxi and O'Dea is arrested.

Im afraid thats one of many.

Plenty of Celtic v Villarreal tickets on sale on ebay. Looking at the seller's name, he is a hun !

Sutty,

My brother in law is a Spurs man and they rate Bale very highly down there. I went to the first game of the season with him down at the Riverside were they got beaten 2 - 0. Said to him that Gomez was disaster and PSV were laughing all the way to the bank. He said "nae chance at that money" He even went as far to nickname him the Octopus. I had seen Gomes play for PSV and anytime i had seen him he looked dodgy.

He reckon they need a left winger. Spurs seemed to short down that side and either Assou Ekotto or Bale get played there to give them balance. He thinks Harry wants Bentley on the right for his delivery into the box. He reckons Zokora, Lennon and wait for it Hutton could be on a shaky peg. Redknapp has recalled guy's like Stalteri and a couple of other guy's who were bombed out.

WGS,

Fair do's. I know you know your stuff.

Personally I believe Harry will be looking to strengthen in other areas in January.

I think bournesouprecipe has called this one right.

WCM

The point seems to be escaping you. If Aiden was really on the ran-dan as badly as you say, he would have made more headlines and seen more jail cells than he has. Nobody can protect you from that kind of downfall, yet Aiden is in no cell and is not on the front page. Strange that?

As for why would you lie/ exaggerate/ invent/ inflate? I cannot answer that. What good does it do to post such rumours? Nothing but mischief as far as I can see. If you are genuinely concerned about Aiden, you should bring your info directly to the club rather than spread it on fans boards. The club can do something to help Aiden if it is true. The guys on here can't do anything but disapprove or encourage or discount.

Unless it's CQN guys that are leading Aiden astray. Old Tim, do you have an alibi?

All this talk of McGeady going because of his off field behaviour is codswallop. The lad has the best advisor in the business looking after him.His dad.

If he does go it's because Celtic have decided to cash in.

There may have been suitors at £12million.We would be lucky to get £6million currently.

Kojo is 100% correct the Bhoy has Plateued.

I would take the money ,if it is North of £6million.

He doesn't know when to part with the ball.Until he learns that, he will never become the the world class player ,that his ball control merits.

Mr Green,

I love Aiden just as much as you my friend but my source is pretty close to the hassle that surround the nights out!!. No more to be said on the matter.

Anyhow

4 in a row hear we go!!!

Sutty,

The areas you said i think your right though. They do need a centre half as i think he will play Corluka right. Your right about King and Woodgate being crocked. I believe Jol was keen to take Zokora to Hamburg. Jenas seems to have a had a new lease of life since Redknapp took over. I haven't been overly impressed by him over the years.

Don't be suprised if you see Harry go for Diarra of Portsmouth for your midfield berth.

I am sorry to disagree, my friend.

But, I think that Aiden has indeed, Plateaued.

Mebbe, it is a term that is open to conflicting interpretations, thereof.. .but, to my way of thinking ..

Aiden, has sointenly, Plateaued, wit mebbe a wee bit o' back sliding thrown in, fur guid measure.

I am most disappointed that he has not matured in mentality ...he has unarguably matured, in physique..which shows that he does/did have means to show, dedication improvement... now it seems that his current dedication has switched to more frothy pursuits.

And to which he is now extremely, dedicated.

His story, is an old one... the Bright lights and Painted Damsels, have bin the downfall of many another aspiring star.

I have said it before, and I will continue to do so.. no matter how many of my readers show nausea gigantica in protest against my re-iteration of such.

"Unless,a Celtic Player, shows Steady and Consistent Improvement in his Performances.. I quickly become disenamoured in him"( Is that a woid..?...ed)( Sure it is.. and if it is no... then tough cookies)

And may a add... that consideration is not unique, by any measurement.

I bet Gary Glitter would have liked you.

When you were young.

Mickybhoy, I don’t doubt that we are in for a bit of ‘things evening themselves up’ in the months to come, McCurry might well be the man for the job.

WeeChrisMorris, a fine idea.

Apologies if this has already been stated, but by my reckoning we have won 21 out of our last 23 domestic matches.

The refereeing debate continues on Clyde. I've changed my position on this recently. Part of me used to like being the victim and being able to claim the moral highground. If I'm being honest, for the first time in my lifetime we have had a decent run with decisions, although the media's unbalanced reporting is as disgraceful as it is predictable. Normally given the choice, I would prefer a 'fair' win to a win assisted by a bad decision, but at the moment I think I'll make an exception. The reaction across the city is hysterical in both senses of the word, and I believe unhelpful to their prospects. At the same time, I cannot see how we can lose from this. Foreign referees? Video evidence? Every Celtic fan would bight your hand off.

Kojo

You allude to Aiden "misbehaving" in his personal life. And if misbehaving is too strong then perhaps you'd rather have it that he doesn't conduct himself in a healthy way as would most other sportsmen/ladies.

And you know that to be true?

Paul67

What is you excuse for the Lazy Journalism headline?

I know a guy at the DR ,i could put a word in (:->

Kojo

Maybe so but McGeady's plateau is many a players once in a lifetime peak spot.

Not sure there are many around at the money we can afford to replace him at the plateau he reached last season.

If he gets back to that he is better the devil you know.

His decision making could improve. That comes from playing. On his shooting I agree and surely that is an area where practice produces a result.

I take Kojo's point about physically he might not get faster but I think he will get heavier and stronger. Soldity can often compensate for speed (McDonald?) so I certainly would prefer that we work on developing what needs developing.

I don't know if you have read the George Galloway page in
today's Record
It is well worth a read

I ain't gonna give the 'aindinho dancing on taxi's' nonsense any attention whatsoever.

I am, however, looking forward to his return to the hoops as we are undoubtedly short of attacking variety and options without him. I think some are being too hard on a guy who at 22 still has his best years in front of him. Let's not forget the form and commitment he has shown over the last couple of seasons.

I think that the short term future of our team will see Shaun returned to his best position on wide left (he will never be a centre forward and I hope never to see him deployed there again). For me Shaun is far better on the left.

Howevvvaaaahhh (copyright Kojo)

This will open the door for Aiden to play on the right wing. It will give the team more options. Shaun cutting in on the left and Aiden able to hit the by line on the right, something we have missed in recent years.

In other news....

I'm much happier seeing Robson in CM in away games. Massimo does a job, but not during sleeves up times. For your consideration Mr Strachan.

"My double life as a Rangers fan playing for Celtic

Davie Provan
Although I played most of my career for Celtic, I came from a typical west-of-Scotland Rangers family. We lived in Gourock and my dad, David senior, my brother, Roddy, and I were all Rangers supporters. We were a churchgoing family and my brother and I regularly attended Sunday school. By the time I was 7 or 8, we were being taken to Ibrox by my dad, where we watched players like Jim Baxter and Willie Henderson.

When I first heard Celtic were interested in me I was surprised, not because of my background but because a club like Celtic would consider signing me. Obviously the family would have preferred that I had gone to Rangers but it was never a problem in the house and I had total support from them. Both my parents just wanted me to be what I wanted to be and despite coming from a Rangers family there was enormous respect for Celtic and Jock Stein.

I was a part-timer at my first club, Kilmarnock, and in 1978 we drew 1-1 with Celtic in the Scottish Cup at Parkhead. Jock Stein stopped me before the game and spoke to me for quite a while, which I thought was unusual. I had heard that he had offered Kilmarnock money for me but apparently the two clubs couldn’t agree a fee.

Then one Tuesday night I got a phone call after I had come home from training. On the line was John Clark, assistant to Billy McNeill, who by that time had taken over from Big Jock as manager. John said, “Look, we know about your background but would you come to Celtic?” “Yes, in a minute, not a problem at all,” I replied. He said, “OK, I just wanted to know that you would be in the right frame of mind to play for us.”

The first time I actually met my new teammates was at Parkhead before we got on the bus to go and play Partick Thistle on my debut. Walking into any new dressing-room is intimidating, especially at a club that size.

As strange as it sounds now, my fee of £125,000 was then a record between two Scottish clubs. Basically, I had been signed to replace Johnny Doyle and I was really wary of meeting him but as it turned out he became one of my best pals at the club. Johnny was at the wind-up right away saying, “There’s another currant bun in the dressing-room.” There were other players from a Rangers background at Celtic such as Danny McGrain and Tom McAdam while Murdo MacLeod signed about eight weeks after me. The other “currant bun” was Alfie Conn, who had played for Rangers.

There was always religious banter at Parkhead, most of it started by Johnny, but it was always good natured, never anything more. I travelled to Parkhead with Mike Conroy, who was Celtic through and through and had wanted to play for the club all his life. He would give me stick about being a Rangers man but it was just a laugh, no more than that.

The Celtic fans took to me right away, though in games against Rangers I felt I had to do a bit more. I would be lying if I said otherwise and I think one or two others from the same background would tell you the same. You would never leave yourself open in an Old Firm game. If there is such a thing as another 10 per cent, then that was the match where you had to make sure you found it. You didn’t want anyone to think, “He’s not giving it his best shot.” So you always did the full shift and more.

The will to win was astonishing in those Old Firm games, where you had guys like Johnny Doyle and Alex MacDonald who probably epitomised what each club was about. But although there would be a lot of verbals going on during the game I never heard any sectarian comment at all and I am being perfectly honest about that. We didn’t hear it when we played teams other than Rangers either. That might surprise people but it is true. There is a great respect between Celtic and Rangers players because they know what each other are going through.

In the early 1980s Frank McGarvey and I were invited to the New Lodge Celtic Supporters Club in Belfast. At that time the hunger strike was coming to an end and you could have cut the atmosphere in Belfast with a knife. I had never been in the city before and it was intimidating.

Frank and I stayed in the infamous Europa hotel which had been blown up countless times. All the Republican pubs had closed down as a mark of respect to the hunger strikers but the Celtic Supporters Club had received permission to stay open. As we entered the hall I noticed that there were portraits of the hunger strikers all around the walls. It was a bit surreal to be honest and I was glad to get out of Belfast and back to Scotland.

When I first signed for Celtic I got a bit of stick from some people in Gourock, not friends but acquaintances who would give me the usual “turncoat” stuff. And it became apparent very early on that hassle was part of the deal of being an Old Firm player. In a Glasgow pub one night a guy called me a turncoat then spat in my face. But most of the nasty element was verbal, usually after some punter had too much to drink.

There is a real purge on sectarian songs these days but when I played it was quite normal for Old Firm supporters to sing them and everyone had become accustomed to it. We don’t have the overt sectarian element in the grounds simply because they are not allowed to get away with it but I’m not convinced that there has been progress made outwith the stadiums.

The biggest problem is the intelligent, professional, middle-class bigots and there are those on either side. You can understand the knuckleheads who don’t know any better but if you have an intelligent man who can’t open his mind and see the stupidity in it all, then Scottish society is going to have a problem for a long time.

The Rangers thing is gone for me. There is no part of me now that wishes I had played at Ibrox. It was my up-bringing and it was ingrained into me but I wouldn’t swap my Celtic career for anything. The irony is, between signing for Celtic in 1978 and 1986, when I played my last game for the club, Rangers didn’t win the title. I won four championship medals and Rangers were never at the races. Who knows what would have happened if I had signed for Rangers but I don’t have an ounce of regret, none whatsoever."

You may or should I say, must, recall.. that I did do a little piece on the reason why Aiden had slipped in the Pecking order.

And why Mr. Strachan was displeased with his attitude.

I was told at that time by others that Aiden had developed a most distresssing apetite for non salubrious pleasures... pleasures, that were not in keeping with... "Mens Sano in Corpore Sano".

In fact, that particular submission caused my old sparring partner,Setting Free the Bears to elicit.. that even if Aiden were indulging in the wild side of life.. that kind of indulgence did not seem to interfere with the talents of Georgie Best.. and other like minded free spirits...Setting free the Bears opinion on this type of extra curricular activity, notwithstanding.. I am afraid that propriety frowns on that type of Rakish Behavior.

And in that displeasure, I concur.

An Athelete must, above all things, be dedicated and completely submerged in his craft.

And Rakish and Flamboyant mid-night adventures, are anathema to his pursuit of athletic perfection.

Yes, I have been told privately, that Aiden was Mis Behaving in a manner that was extremely inappropriate in the furtherance of his Celtic career.

From CM................

"When William opened the curtains the morning sun burst into his room like a flash from a camera. Too bright to focus at first but he was glad the sunshine had welcomed him with such a pleasurable promise of warmth and brightness on this autumnal day. Perhaps it won’t rain at all and he can walk to the newsagent across the park and pick up his Sunday papers instead of taking the car. Grabbing a light coat, just in case, and donning his boots he pulled the front door shut behind him and made his way down the path and crossed the road.

He didn’t notice at first, maybe because it was Sunday, but he was the only one about. Usually, there would be a neighbour or two strolling with a dog or at least a jogger sweating profusely trying vainly to shed a few pounds pounding the path in the park. Autumn leaves gathering in untidy clusters around the trees and a scurrying squirrel were the only animations accompanying him until he reached the newsagents on the far corner of the estate.

Mr Singh welcomed him with a little surprise in his voice as he said William was his first customer that morning. William looked up at the clock on the wall and noted it was almost nine o’clock. Now that’s strange. He paid for the papers smiled meekly at Mr Singh and began the return trip home.

This time, more alert now he realised how quiet it really was. There was absolutely no one else about. Perhaps the clock on the wall in the Newsagent’s was wrong and it was earlier than the time shown. But then his own alarm clock in the bedroom said it was 8.30 or thereabouts when he first woke up. He decided to change his route home and instead of traipsing through the park he made a detour down a side road and took the back streets home.

He’d lived here for five years, ever since he finished college in Glasgow and took a job in a small accountancy firm based at the Kelvin Hall end of Sauchiehall Street. The bus stop was close to the end of his street and dropped him just as close to his place of work every weekday. It was a nice, quiet area, rows of terraced mews with neat gardens and well maintained iron railings guarding the carefully painted front doors.

Not a soul was about. The noise of his own footsteps echoed loudly as if to emphasise the silence over the whole city.

Once inside his own home he switched on the radio and filled the kettle with water as the radio filled the room with noise. Radio Clyde was thrumming quietly in the background with the usual nauseating cackle of advertising jingles and hyperventilating voices insisting you buy whatever as your brain immediately switches off.

At least the radio was making a noise thought William. He was getting a little worried for a moment. After breakfast he decided to walk into the city centre and do a little shopping. He didn’t need much but there was a birthday coming up and he needed to get a card if nothing else for his sister who still lived at home with Mum and Dad further out of Glasgow in Milngavie.

Wrapping his Rangers scarf around his neck and tucking the tails into his jacket he set off walking briskly all the way up the road and onto Sauchiehall Street. It was not until he reached the entrance to Buchanan Street Galleries that he saw anybody at all. A track suited youth with their hood up was sloping along, keeping close to the shop windows down Buchanan Street It was such an eerie experience he was more than a little unnerved and beginning to feel positively scared. But at least there were other people about, he felt a rush of relief run through his veins. By the time he reached where this other person was spotted they’d gone, slipped away down a side alleyway and off seemingly towards Queen Street station’s side entrance.

It was almost 11 o’clock now so William thought he’d drop into the Horseshoe Bar in Drury Lane. Not necessarily for a drink but more for the prospect of actually meeting someone else in this seemingly deserted city centre. All the other shops were closed. Not a sign of life anywhere. No indication either that they looked likely to open anytime soon.

The Horseshoe bar has to be approached right to the very doors before you can tell if the place is open or not. William, by familiarity and reflex automatically attempted to push the doors open as he reached them, the proprietor never opened late and the place was never empty. This time William recoiled in pain as the door failed to yield to his pressure and his arm and face clattered against the woodwork.

He staggered back into the street and looked up. The place was closed, locked tight against the outside world. “What the hell is going on?” blurted William not for the first time this morning but it was the first time he said it aloud.

The city was deserted. All but the furtive figure he’d spotted that quickly skulked away. William had no choice but to return home. This time he ran. Looking and searching frantically down alleyways and side streets at every opportunity to see if anyone else was about. Nothing. Not a soul. The parts of the city he was running through was as dead as the leaves falling from the trees. As he passed the newsagent shop Mr Singh had already closed up for the day. It would not be surprising if William was the first and only customer he’d had. William ran onwards, across the park and back inside his home before he made any more decisions.

He turned the radio back on and looked out of the window. Radio Clyde was playing upbeat music and the DJ was in a particularly cheerful mood as he cut in between the advertisements to talk. He listened carefully this time. Surely Radio Clyde would have some explanation for this weird experience. Surely, one of their staff was on the ball and could bring out some relevant news instead of the usual mindless pap they bleat out every other day of the week.

Then it came. Across the airwaves like a Megahertz tsunami. The DJ was hysterically cheerful. He was ranting on and on about the mass exodus of great pockets of people from Glasgow. Milngavie, Bearsden, Giffnock, Newton Mearns, Kelvinside Hyndland, Finnieston, just to name a few were all empty of people.

Overnight it seemed every man jack of them had disappeared. Gone, vanished, emigrated, vamoosed.

Yet, other places were as busy and bustling as every other Sunday squawked the DJ. Bailleston, Royston, Burnside, Ruchazie,…. It was business as usual. The chapels were reporting even higher turnouts this beautiful Sunday morning as folk were beginning to come to terms with the demographics of it all.

All the protestants had gone. All the Catholics and other denominations had stayed. “What a day to rejoice!” beamed the radio guy. What a great day for the Republicans, What a great day for those in political power. The thorn in their side had finally gotten the message and given up. Not just given up but taken themselves and their resentful ways along with them to some place far away. ‘The city is ours’!

William’s head was reeling. Yes he was a Rangers fan but he didn’t have a great deal to say for the protestant church, or any other church for that matter. But why was he never told? Why did the whole street, nay whole neighbourhood up sticks and leave and not tell him? Where have they gone? So many questions, too many to deal with right now but he had to find out more, do something. But what?

He got in his car and went for a drive. He visited the Barras area, Gallowgate and down to the Forge shopping precinct. What a difference to his own area. This place was buzzing, street parties, fireworks and tricolour flags everywhere. The whole of these areas was deliriously rejoicing like revellers on VE day.

William parked his car, noting to lock his Rangers scarf in the boot as he headed out to mingle with the crowds, gathering in ever increasing numbers as the day wore on. Feeling sick to his stomach he realised he was the only one not high as a kite and therefore, perhaps the only Rangers fan left in Glasgow. Perhaps Scotland. What on earth was he to do?

The more he wandered, the more he saw of happy cheering people waving tricolours and sporting the hooped football top of their favourite team. Even priests in full church robes were smiling and partaking in the jubilation.

William could stomach no more. He got back to his car, his shoulders heavy and stinging from the back slapping and neck wringing hugs everyone was sharing out as he grappled through the crowds.

Driving down through the city centre again he now realised why everywhere was closed. Only the Proddies worked on Sundays. Only Proddies probably worked anyway he thought slyly. ‘We’ll see tomorrow when the buses and trains are back in full swing and folk will want to get to work and school’.

Monday came and Monday went. No one opened up shop. Except Mr Singh who was complaining that suppliers were not delivering so all he had was what was in his shop the day before. Everywhere else remained shut.

Even Tuesday came and went like a curfew in a blockaded city in some war torn country.

Wednesday was no different. Radio Clyde was still babbling like Hugh Keevins on speed after a Celtic victory.

Then Thursday. The mood changed, like someone had switched off a light and all went black. Not a shop, bank or post office had been opened all week. Without employees the place could not function. No deliveries and no baking. No milk from the farms arrived and no newspapers. The only items available of this kind were the Daily Record and this could never be classed as a newspaper and even these were just dumped onto the streets for the vagrants to use as bedding for the night under the arches and in the deserted shop doorways.

William got into his car and drove back down to Gallowgate. The mood was sombre, bordering on the vicious. Faces were glum and unshaven. The men looked just as bad.

Clothes looking dirtier than usual. Pathetic bodies sat around the kerbsides and doorways in clumps like bin bags on refuse collection day. In fact the rubbish had not been collected either since no bin men arrived to do their work. The place was a rat infested midden as always but this time it really looked worse than ever.

William locked his car some streets away and walked over, trying hard not to look too far out of place. He cursed his habit of washing in the mornings and donning a fresh shirt. This was a dead giveaway.

He sat close to a pile of rubbish and listened intently to what a cluster of people were arguing over just a few smelly feet away.

“It’s terrible”. “This is awful”. “We can’t go on like this”. And “I’m raging, so I am”. These were just some of the phrases of discontent he picked up as he cocked his ear towards the throng.

The worst comment to reach his ears was the one that made the penny drop. Amid a bluster of profanities and grunts he learned that not one giro had been posted out and none of the hordes had received a penny in benefits since the exodus. No postal delivery, no post office, no giros.

Of course, thought William. Where would this lot be without the working habits and support of the people of Glasgow at large. The protestant community as it could be fondly termed was steeped in a history of graft and benevolence towards the needy. Even the needy that snarled like rabid dogs as they fed them.

Without this whole layer of hard working honest and amiable people in the socio economic infrastructure of any community the whole of society will come crashing to the ground. It only takes a few days. Even armies need a massive back up of support and administration to make it work. This really is no different. If you take that layer away you will soon have utter anarchy.

This is what is happening here. The protestant community finally gave up being accommodating and acquiescing to every little demand their petulant opposites were drowning them with across the airwaves and newsstands in Scotland. Politicians too weak or too imbibed themselves in these subversive motives made matters worse and yet, when the mildest of taunts such as a song at a football match suggesting to those who longed for the land of their purported forefathers should return there their views ended up on the floor of parliament no less, to be used as a kicking board for the natives. It all got too much. Vilified for loving your own country. Banned from questioning the very actions of those who seek to destroy your culture and beliefs.

In a movement of swift and almost thorough planning all but a very few were prepared for migration overnight to start a new life free of subversions, insurgencies and insidious goading from those that have such wickedness in their hearts. These protestants in their new land could now, once again, commemorate their dead in the silent salutes of tradition and respect that they rightfully deserve, not be forced to applaud to cover someone else’s disgraceful disrespect for those that died in battle so we might live in freedom. They could fly their own national flag and sing their own national anthem without recriminations in their own land. They could march through the streets without fear of a car bomb or even a firecracker exploding at their feet. They could enjoy the fruits of their labours without paying such massive handouts to parasites that demanded more blood than a leech on a butterfly.

Quietly and with total decorum they slipped away in the dark hours of night to rid themselves of this blight and make a new life free of the twisted contortions of political correctness and accusations of un-provable discrimination.

He’d seen enough. It all made sense now, it was time to go. The last words William heard as he reached his car was one hooped covered clot say to his friend. “Well, we could always plant totties”. William let out an impulsive snigger. The two men heard this and turned towards William, knowing instinctively, he was an outsider.

William closed the car door shut as quickly as he could, just as the men reached the kerb side. Fumbling nervously William turned the key in the ignition but instead of the smooth purring of the engine to make his getaway safe all he heard was a loud buzzing noise from under the bonnet. A buzzing so irritating and familiar, it woke him up.

It was 8.30 Sunday morning. A day off and a chance to relax over breakfast with the Sunday papers, once he fetched them from the newsagents across the park."

I was in the car on the way home and had Real Rubbish radio on. Just heard the last 15. Roughie was saying it was marginal on the pen - the other dobber was saying it was a yard outside and that the other two idiots in the studio agreed. So by his reckoning it was 3-1 (in the studio) I was meanwhile shouting at the radio (how stoooopid am I) IT WAS 2-1 TO CELTIC - WHO GIVES A *&C% WHAT YOU THINK.

Where did you go after the match

A healthy Mind & a healthy Body.

A very rare combination.

If your body is healthy enough you may be tempted to indulge to the full upon that on which propriety tends to frown and against which your healthy mind might rail.

But, as you're only young once, how are you gonna resist temptations? An athlete need not be a hermit.

There's overdoing it and then there's life's healthy pleasures. I don't see any signs of a decrepit, unfit, booze soaked Aiden so I'll accept it as a mere blip in form. It's called taking the longer term view.

Long time no post, but I'd just like to add my tuppence worth on Aiden. I don't want to comment on the behaviour rumours, but I'd like to point out something that John Clarke has said about Aidan, and I'd like to think he knows his onions. Not been on for a few days, yesterday was the type of day that wins Championships. We can debate Gordon Strachan all day long but one thing that cannot be up for debate is his ability to put a team on the field that will keep going until the death. it can't be coincidence that we score so many goals late on.

Good Luck to Estadio, sounds like you are in for a great time but a lot of work. Enjoy yourself!

I'll tell you

If I was to list the negative 'heard from a good source' rumours, which/that I have heard this week , I could safely dig out my Peoples 'sick on the shirt away strip' and head off to parkhead toll for the St Mirren game - sure to be picked.

Suffice to say that without a notion of us buying any players - EVER! - we are about to offload our first team and a good haul of the second...

Ah Well.

Seems that between the 'Paddy' surnamed mafioso who plague the the 'effective' echelons of the 'Mickey' ridden SFA/SPL, the Papist indulgence that sees every important position within the erstwhile protestant establishment inhabited by the 'rich, mad Catholics', and the 'Pro celtic pandering press' talking the East End team up beyond their collective importance or indeed likeability... It would seem we're so confident about this title we're just going to sell... everybody...

Kojo - you're a dreadful old tittle-tattle so ye are. The bright lights are hardly a recent phenomenon as think the city centre has been electrified for a couple of years now so don't think they'd turn the laddie's heid as he must be used to them by now surely. Not sure his girlfriend would much care for being referred too as a painted damsel either.

Maybe the bright lights of Vegas and all them painted showgirls have turned your head though, can happen at any age, even to one as wise as you.

I just heard Franz Ferdinand's new single there on Radio Scotland.

They're singing about you.

As always,pal.. yer Logic is..well... so.. Irrefutably Irrefutable!

Nowhere, does one see, any signs of early or even nascent signs of dissipation on the corpus of Master McGeady, that he deports on the field of play.

Howevahhhhhhhh..

I am convinced that we would see a much more truer resemblance of his true MENTAL and Physical condition, should we manage to get a gander at his Portrait, that he keeps hidden away in his Attic.

Time will tell.

It always wiz a wee clype.

o1bhoy-
All these decisions that have went for us in the last six months just dont add up for me
and you feel somethings not quite right.
Perhaps as you suggest it could be some kind of backlash against TFS song and the huns' appalling behaviour in general.
Good things dont last forever and im sure it will all even itself out come the end of the season.
It will be interesting to see who gets to ref the remaining games against them.

Anyone watching the Irish League on Sky? Outrageous dive by the Huns rewarded by a penalty.

To be honest, the standard is absolute guff. That was a great decision a few years ago to ditch Sky by the SPL!

Kojo,

You just like Setting Free The Bears because he was on television on Sunday.

We have not had any more decision in our favour than normal - just that every single one is now being highlighted while they ignore the bad ones against us (and the favourable ones for TFOD while they hightlight the bad ones against them)

This is just an exyension of "normal service " in this wee country.

My business is not confined to the Exhibition of Sporting Talents..in which field of toil .. pristine living standards, are de rigueur.

In fact in my chosen field of endeavour.. to be seen as a Card or a Sport.. or as a "Player",pardon the term.. is viewed as a Plus , in enhancing one's career.

This is not so,in the Field of Endeavour, chosen by Master McGeady.

This kind of sporting behaviour will usually prevent the misbehaviourist, from reaching his full postential... as I see is happening, to our fallen Hero.

There was discussions on Sat night about police/steward tactics for the Hamilton game. Although most songs were football related, I did hear some political songs on the telly.

Quick question....Was there any action as predicted by other celtic sites and alluded to by your good self? I firmly believed that there would be no such action and that there were no real grounds for it either. Just interested to know how it all panned out.

Cheers

Think Celtic are checking all concessions for age and ID

Just read this mornings Daily Raggard and does George Galloway hit the target or what?

Now this is fantasy stuff but if Dr Reid goes back to London (yes please) and George (the scourge of the Huns) Galloway takes over as our new chairman; IMHO that would be good for us Bhoys.

GG has guts I'll say that, never afraid to put his head above the parapet, never afraid to speak out for causes close to his heart.
I remember him being being called a terrorist when he spoke out in favour of the Palestinians in the early 1980's. He also spoke out against the USA / UK led embargo that killed many 10,000's of Iraqi children through lack of medication, water purifying plants and food.
Meanwhile, when GG was fighting the cause of innocent Iraqi's our own Dr R was rolling over over everything the Bush govt and Tony Blur dictated.

We could do far worse than appoint GG but I doubt if we can find anyone better.
GG - IMHO the greatest chairman we'll never have,

In fact on th way in the guy behind me said to the cop on the gate - you wouldnt fit through that turnstile - the cop laughed and said "are you callling me fat" to which the wag said "not at all - it is your big ears that would stop you" !!!!!!!

All the cops had a good laugh at that

Cheers for info folks. As I said, I was quite confident that there would be no mass arrests and predicted as much. 1st away game I have been to in years and only sat down at half time (in the stand behind the goal) No one sat down the whole match

By the way - I was excited when I saw it was the Spice of Life stand - then gutted as my mouth was watering for my half time chicken pakora only to be let down - what a con - can I take that issue up with consumer standards.

Benjy
Never knowingly been to Lochee although I hear it is legendary.
I have visited the NCR factory.
I was once in a traffic halt to accommodate the "caravan" of a certain PLO chairman (There's that word again!) who had a holster pistol and whose guards carried automatic weapons.

'GG whose credentials as 'GG are unimpeachable.

Jinkysboy 9.56

I think you are making that 33/1 up.

Surely another 7 titles at an even money bet accumulator is better no?

I heard on the news that Donald Finlay is representing the alleged child killer Peter Tobin.

Hypocrisy of the highest "order"

jinkysboy - I was quite excited by the prospect of the Spice of Life too. Situated between Sainsubury's and Morrisons you would have thought they could have done better on the catering front. South Lanarkshire trading standards are pretty good though - I think you should complain. Meanwhile Mrs Lanarkcelt was very excited by the police horses - apparently different from the ones we get at Celtic Park.

Blogger GG
You sir are an impostor, a bounder and a cad.

Although he claims citizenship of Lochee, I think he's a Charleston bhoy.

He worked in Michelin the tyre factory.

'GG whose credentials as 'GG are unimpeachable' - you have failed the GG test. You may even be a lurker from FF; bad boy, dirty boy go to your bed.

I've just seen the Celtic penalty decision again just now and it looks definitely like penalty with Sheridan falling several yards inside the box. It was an extremely difficult decision for the referees and perfectly understandable why he thought it was a penalty. There can be no question about the sending off though, it was a cynical foul by Canning, and if he hadn't fouled Sheridan I'm pretty confident it would have been a goal, so I think the penalty was some tough justice in my mind.

Dundee Perth

That 33-1 was quoted on here by another poster - think it was on Friday.

Your point was the one I made - surely sticking the money on every year would yield more than that. I was asking if any punter could advise otherwise as Im nit a betting man.

Was thinking of £100 on 10 in a row but at 33-1 dont think its a good bet. What would same stake yield as accumulator each year given odds maybe shortening each year

'GG the real, the original and the best.

Just watched the game on tv

Their goal was a great cross and good finish

Most refs would give that pen - at full speed it looked in the box and was justice

Our winner was a fantastic goal - and did he leav ethe field of play when he celebrated - on tv it looked like he stopped on the line or there abouts

scot booth wanted the whole Celtic team booked fae leavin pitch to celabrate good job he didnt see killie dey celabrated in the dugout awk they dont get the chance often.

What are the morals of a man who defends scum like that.

To defend that - and bet he is one of the BJK crew - mey he rot in hell as there is no doubt that will be his eternal damnation

craggy island gaa,

You've been on the blog a fair bit today. Making up for lost time I see. :)

Chris Sutton is a Legend

Good to hear from you, pal.

Aye, ah've been drifting in and out of the blog, Naka style!

Don't think my free kick opportunity is gonna come so I'll be signing off soon.

Mrs Craggy Island went back to work today after Maternity leave.

The night shift beckons for me, but not tonight ;-)

Hah!

No worries my friend. Our six a side team are dropping quicker than Celtic first teamers. Be calling you in soon, but I fear your temperament is somewhat... unstable? :p

Chris Sutton

Ask Kenny Clark for a reference for Cigaa

jinkysboy,

Aye. A few pints of the Guiness and he admitted all. I was ashen faced when he went into the full details!

jinkysboy

why thank you ;-)

I'm sure Kenny would say "The boy has class in abundance in that left foot of his, if only he could only learn to put his right foot in his gob he'd have made it by now".

Chris sutton is a Legend

See above and its a judgement call on your part!

Anyone who was there that day will vouch for the vicious sliding tackle by McGarvey Junior (I think he was anyway). I appealed to Mr Clark a little too vociferously cos apparently I was heard at The Pitz at Townhead!!! ;-)

And Hamilton too ;-))))))

Cigaa

Your lucky - I have a crap left foot and cant get my right in my gob either. Such is life

o1bhoy

Have a good say there - guess the sun shines on Oz again today 9and may it shine on you and yours too)

Off to bed now zebidee -

a prayer for Kano before I sleep

May he rest tonight and repair his body and soul so that we may welcome him back soon

jinkysboy

I'm so jealous of you two-footed players! ;-)

On the subject of Mr Findlay QC. I see from todays Sun article he was involved in the event hosted by Mr Goram where vile racist, sectarian and personal abuse was the order of the day. How they all laughed heartily.

On the other hand, it is widely known that the Law Society have certain standards, particularly for one of the Queens Counsel. I would imagine this extends to the associations they keep and public image they portray. I wonder if he will find himself in hot water over this one as he did in years gone by for his karaoke skills.

Hail Hail
Jamiebhoy

Tomorrow's back-page photo will certainly be the one posted by Gerry at 8.58... No 10 on the back too...but just moments before, Maradona gave a young Celtic ball-boy a 'WOW' moment, one the youngster will forever remember. The wee Argentinian ( weediegomaradona ) had apparently dropped a chain or something whilst 'refereeing' his players during a training session. Seemingly very concerned, he and a number of his coaches walked up-down-across that part of pitch searching for the item. They were joined by John Hayes, the groundsman and some of the ballboys. They went at it like Strathclyde's finest looking for the murder weapon...suddenly, the wee ball-boy shouts..." A fun it! "... Maradona understood right away and ran towards the wee lad and hoisted him into the air...this was followed by a wee bear hug from the wee maestro...and possibly a wee Argentinian peck on the cheek. The bonus was the hat and gloves that Diegito had been wearing throughout the session...

For those looking at taking 33/1 about Celtic doing 10 in a row, I think you should realise what bad value that represents.
We have already done 3, so another 7 are required.
33/1 to win all 7 would mean you are betting just under 4/6 on each years title.
There is very little doubt that you could get more value by betting them at the start of each season & simply letting your winnings accumulate.
7 years at 4/5, for example, would result in a return of £6122 for a stake of £100, or odds of 60/1.
On the other hand, in 7 years time our neighbours may have been long since consigned to history, in which case the 33/1 would be a great price. :-))))
What a lovely thought that is.

I'll second jinkysboy's prayers and good wishes for Kano

Haste ye back here soon, Kano

craggy island

jinkysbhoy.

I calculated the odds on Celtic winning the League seven years on the trot at odds of 11/8 each year with a £100 stake doubling up year on year total comes to £42,622.94.

You may get 6/4 a couple of years but if Celtic keep winning the price will go odds on in the last couple of years,so 11/8 should be a good average.

Jinksyboy

Aye Findlay will try to put the blame on Gerry Nugent.

Good night one and all

CSIAL

I'll hold you to that!

craggy

oldtim...I don`t see the bookmakers being so generous. I would say we are approaching odds on level now. In future years we will be well and truly there. Come year 10 I reckon we`ll be nearly 1-2 on.

Hail Hail
Jamiebhoy

craggy island gaa,

We play every Monday night. I'll get you over for a game sooner or later.

Jamiebhoy.

I think you'll get 11/8 for a few years, and bookies aren't generous, but they have to attract the punters to splash their cash, the rearrangers usually start as favs at the start of the season, they have more nutcases who will be looking for the miracle.

I wish I could open an account with OLDTIM Ltd.
John Banks or Paddy Power wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes if you had opened next door to them, Tim.

Oldtim. Both us and the rearangers were evens at the start of this season with Laddies. I'm with Kilbowie Kelt on this one. Who is your bookie!! I want to meet him :-)

Jamiebhoy.

I wouldn't bet anyone that had to win over a nine month period at 1/1,I'm a horsie man and still struggle to win anything.

oldtim...

I'm fond of a wee punt on the gee gees also and wouldn't put a single on at that odds over a season. You got me thinking though and I checked my acca from near the start of the season. Chelsea, Birmingham, Leicester, Wycombe, Celtic and Livi to win their leagues. Odds of around 15,000/1 and still going strong!! The hoops were evens, as I say. Now that would be a good one to come in!!

Off to bed
Hail Hail
Jamiebhoy

Watching Sundays game from afar in the green and misty isle, I jumped off my comfortable sofa and shouted - penalty - when Cillian was chopped down. Later as the tackle was forensicly replaid frame by frame it looked marginal. Looks like Mr. Sheridan has become a lucky mascot for the Hoops in the current injury crisis. Still missing Aidens razzle dazzle.

THE LEFT WINGER,his tattoo is of king billy, and,i can understand Harrys bhoy being sceptical,i would probably feel the same, except,in this case,i am acting on the evidence of my own eyes.I played indoor football with BR on many occasions, excellent player i must say,and seen the offending blemish first hand.

long time, first time n that.

First. Great site Paul. Great comments as well by the way. I love some of the patter. I'm in Oz now, so I miss it. I'm no sure I'd choose ominous to describe our sides chances of winning the league though.

I watched the game in the middle of the night. Even through sleepy eyes I agree about Paul Hartley - solid performance from him. Championship winning teams need players like him for those moments where a win can be taken from a draw.

I'm on here though because I wondered if any of you know anything about the 2008 Homeless World Cup in Melbourne in a fortnight?

I'm going down to watch the games, support Scotland, ye know.

Glowingly positive stuff for Celtic re Maradona on the networked BBC news at 7.35. We're different, a wee bit special.

great etims article
Growing up in our media age, which breeds cynicism and contempt in equal measure, it’s hard to escape the notion that we see only what the assorted media show us. Very rarely do we probe past cosmetics, and go to the heart of things, to the truth.

A prevailing point is in how we are forced to interpret debate as division, at how controversy can sometimes be conjured out of nothing with the twin objectives of increasing our consumption of the media and fulfilling agendas either personal or political.

In this, we tend to forget that division and debate are not one and the same thing. One is destructive, the other constructive. One can have positive effects. The other tends to have negative ones.
Recently, there have been a number of reports in the press, seeking to put our club’s fans in a bad light. The agenda, on the surface, appears to be an effort to smear our supporters in order to divert attention from the despicable behaviour of large numbers of Rangers fans, and to some degree this has been moderately successful.

Those who see recent events as mere attacks on our fans from outside the club have missed the point, though.

Something deeper is going on here, and allow me to tell you what I think it is. It is an effort to split the Celtic support, and the motive behind it is the further advancement of the cause of anti-Irish racism in Scotland. Think that sounds crazy? Bear with me for a moment and I’ll tell you why I think so.

There are two issues here; the songs debate and the poppy debate.

First, let me say that these are debates, and not divisions, and they are perfectly healthy debates at that. On the first, the notion of Republican singing, and what is and is not acceptable in a modern society, is a controversial subject, and one where debate was needed if that question was ever going to be answered. The club’s comments of late have come close to clarifying the matter once and for all; these songs are neither racist nor bigoted, but as they often offend not only the wider community but sections of our own support the club would rather they were not sung.

Neither racist nor bigoted, the club has said. There, in crystal clear language, is Celtic’s position, and no right-minded person could ever have thought otherwise. That aside, this needed to be said, and now our club has done so, we can move forward, secure in the knowledge that we have a weapon with which to hit back at the people who claim the section of our support singing these songs is sectarian.

Celtic’s stance on the matter has borne out the views of the fans who wanted the position clarified. Those who say these songs are bigoted are as ignorant of the history which underpins them as they are of the present political climate. The Irish conflict is over, and at a time when not only the British government but most of the Unionist parties of the North of Ireland recognise the legitimacy of Sinn Fein the claim that the situation in the Six Counties was not a war situation, and those involved in it were not combatants, is nonsensical.

Those who call the heroes of Irish history terrorists are ignoring a basic and fundamental truth; these people were pursuing a political agenda, and they and their contemporaries are now recognised as key players in that process. Thereby, as distasteful as it might be for some to accept it, the songs Celtic fans sing about the Armed Struggle are songs of a political and not sectarian nature, which makes them a legitimate form of expression.

Equally clear is the second part of Celtic’s statement that they want to see those songs vanish from the stands. There is a time and a place for them, and that is not at the football, so says the logic of the argument, and if even some of our own fans are offended by them, as is clearly the case, what good do they serve?

And so, the debate goes on. The songs continue to be sung, by a number of fans. Their argument is also clear; in a free society, there is no inalienable right not to be offended, and provided a line into illegal activity is not crossed no-one has a right to restrict another’s freedom of expression. This argument is no more or less valid than the one put forward by Celtic, and so yes, there is a debate, and it is one which will probably be going on for a long time to come.

But let me state again the central point of this case; debate does not equate division, although some would like it just fine if it did, and in that lies the first clear indicator as to what is really going on here, and it has been made clearer still by the poppy debate.

The debate about poppies did not come out of nowhere, as much as it might seem to be the case. It appears to many as though it was an issue forced upon us, and I have sympathy with that view. The way in which it was appropriated, not by any “radical group” of Celtic fans, but by sections of the press, and by Rangers Football Club and others, points me towards that stance.

Let me first address those who have said the club mishandled this whole issue. I firmly disagree with that view. I believe the action taken by our club was the only action open to us. Think, for just one second, about what the response from the media would have been had we did what many have advocated since; imagine we had either refused the SPL request to wear the poppies on our shirts or offered the fans their say on the matter beforehand?

The club knows full well that in the first instance it would have been a public relations disaster which would have wiped out, completely, all the negative coverage being directed at Rangers fans and The Famine Song in weeks past and put us firmly in the spotlight as the backward and socially out-of-touch club. Whether Celtic will publicly admit it or not, John Reid’s statement on The Famine Song was a clear signal that times have changed and we are no longer going to tolerate finger-pointing from hypocrites or being the targets of abuse. As he said at the AGM recently, we are a distinctly different club to Rangers, not simply a different side of the same coin, and the unspoken subtext of that is simple; If Rangers themselves are not prepared to tackle the sectarian element of their support, for the good of the game and for the good of our society, Reid and Celtic are going to force that action upon them, whatever it takes.

To have fought a no-win battle over the poppies would have dealt a blow to Celtic’s ongoing strategy vis-à-vis Rangers and the section of their support which refuses to change, because it would have created a negative perception of our club amongst the population as a whole, at a time when we need the full force of moral and public opinion on our side. Let’s not forget that whatever our views on John Reid on an individual level, our club chairman is a world class political operator, who knows all the tricks. Reid knew full well not to open our club up to attacks at a time when we were making considerable headway on an issue of tremendous social significance.

It would have had another effect too, the same effect as the second option; it might have caused a serious split amongst our supporters.

Undeniably, there has been a split, on this one issue, but the way the club handled it assured that it was a small one. And whilst the debate has been fierce, it was largely had outside public eye. Neither the club nor the support as a whole has been damaged by that.

In the end, the club’s decision to hold a minute’s applause was fully vindicated, as the event went off without a hitch. The great response of the vast majority of the fans was heartfelt and dignified; those who wanted to maintain silence, either out of respect for the war dead, or in silent protest at certain aspects of the situation, did so for the most part. Those who wanted to show their appreciation of the sacrifice of those who went to war, or who did so in celebration of the freedom which allows celebration as well as protest, did so.

In true Celtic fans style, it brought credit to everyone involved.

Ten minutes into the match, a section of fans left, to go outside and protest not only the situation regarding the forced wearing of the poppies by our players, but the perceived role of our Chairman in a situation which has cost the lives of uncounted victims of a recent conflict, the one in Iraq.

The crucial factor here is they did it outside, where they did not disturb fellow fans or distract from the game. This, too, whether one agrees with their protest or not, was done with class, with dignity and with respect for their fellow supporters. To claim, as some have, that they embarrassed the club is to miss the woods for the trees; what they did was perfectly in line with what this club is and has always been about; diversity, inclusion, tolerance and respect for all. Agree or disagree with their politics, as is your right, but they showed their class, Celtic class, in how they made their point.

Some have tried to put a different slant on it.

Internal debates have been portrayed as unbridgeable divisions, and groups of fans have been played against one another. At the heart of all of this is one thing; Celtic’s Irish roots.

The Famine Song is but one in a long line of chants designed to put the Irish in Scotland on the defensive. Whether Celtic is an Irish club or a Scottish club or, as I believe, a hybrid of both is irrelevant when one considers this point; for a large number of Irish-Scots, it is the one institution in this nation they most clearly identify with as their own. Celtic is where many feel at home.

Anti-Irish sentiment in Scotland has rarely been more keenly felt or on such naked display as in the present time. The media has tried to ignore it when it has not been disgustingly helping to perpetuate it, as with the treatment routinely dished out to Lennon, McGeady and now young James McCarthy. Yet for all the efforts of certain sections of the media, and large sections of Scottish society as a whole, the strategy of trying to undermine the place of the Irish in our communities has been largely a failure; this is in no small part down to the response of the non-Irish supporters of our club, who like the defeated fighters of the slaves rebellion against Rome stood and said “I am Spartacus”, and stood alongside their Irish brothers and sisters in condemning the treatment being meted out to them.

The solidarity the non-Irish Celtic fans showed to their brothers and sisters amongst that community is one of the greatest gestures in the history of our support, and it has strengthened the ethos of Family that runs through us now and has made us the undisputed Best Fans in the World. It is precisely this spirit of solidarity that recent events has been designed to undermine; in short, what the racist, bigoted element of Scottish culture has failed to do on its own, it now seeks to have sections of our own supporter do on its their behalf.

It wants to turn our fans against one another, until the Irish element is forced out. It wants to use us as a further stick with which to beat the collective Irish community, for if Irishness and expressions of the same are not tolerated at Celtic Park, where, then, will the Irish in Scotland feel truly secure? Using the songs debate as wedge, they made very little ground. The poppy debate took them a step closer than before. They are still a long way from any degree of what they would call success, but they will not simply give up and go away. Doubtless they have other cards to play, and as time goes by we will see what they are, and hopefully we will deal with them the way we have dealt with the present situation.

Debate is good. It’s not the same as division. In the end, when the chips are down, we are all on the same side. This, above all, is what we have to remember.

In the last few days, two leading Rangers fans groups have issued statements in response to George Galloway’s question in the House of Commons on The Famine Song. Mark Dingwall and Steven Smith have, again, called the song “banter”, told us to develop a sense of humour (and to “get used to it”, as disgusting as that idea is) and have denied that the song is either sectarian or racist.

One can only wonder when a more sensible group of Rangers fans will step forward to publicly debate these morons, who are not only an embarrassment to their own club but to Scottish society as a whole. As if flying in the face of such widespread condemnation was not bad enough, they magnify that disgrace every time they try to defend the indefensible. At a moment like this, it is plain for all to see that they truly are Scotland’s Shame.

Always remember, they can’t win unless we let them divide us into different camps. We are Celtic. We are one. We are not, and will never be, like them.

Hail Hail.

Celtic scout John de Pow was at the game Lech Poznan:Polonia Warsaw.

Polish media say, Celtic aparently sees the interest in the 21 years old defensive midfielder from Bosnia.

Excellent contribution, and one with which I heartily agree.

We should remember that there are significant numbers in this country, still today, that are offended merely by the Irish & Irish-Scots community having a club we can identify with, and with which we can celebrate our Irish culture & heritage, alongside fellow supporters who have no Irish links.

They will continue to use the tried & tested method of "divide & rule " to achieve their aims. As time moves on, they will become more & more desperate in their efforts, because they are in a desperate situation. Whilst bigotry & anti-Irish racism is still a problem in this country, the days when they could truly lord it over us are dying rapidly. The croppies don't lie down any more - and they do not like this.

But they'll need to get used to it.

Stilic seems 2 get forward for a holding midfielder

"That did not stop one schoolboy from meeting the coach, though. Maradona’s mood appeared to lift as he hoisted Adam Brown into the air to pose for pictures with the 13-year-old after he found a St Christopher medallion that Fernando Gago, the midfield player, had lost on the field in training at Celtic Park."

Thank God they didn't train at Ibrox - he'd have never got his medallion back ;)

Gents
Just seen the Argies training in Paradise last night. I see a wee Celtic under 14 lad found Deigo Gago's Gold Madalion. Cant believe he gave it back. Surely a swap deal involving Messi till the end of the season was suffice!! :) :)

Big Joe

YouAreWellllcommme, my friend.

After a few games of Stilic in the Polish League, our media were unanimous. This kind of player, is not going to stay here for the long time. I would like to see Celtic binding the contract with him. From me, three times yes, to this player in hoops. One note, I think he is attacking midfielder, not defensive midfielder.

Hey Big Joe,
How much are we talking for his services??

Welcome porridgeandbananas, oldtim67 and LambosFrontTeeth to the party. I'll be sending out info next week on how the system will work and how we monitor the different portfolios (BlantyreKev has tested the proposed system and has declared it to be reasonably simple to operate).

As I do not want to clog up the blog with day to day things would you email me at undefined.celticlover@gmail.com.

The starting line up is looking like this:
celticlover, Celtic_First, Cadizzy, BlantyreKev, Mort, o1bhoy, porridgeandbananas, oldtim67 and LambosFrontTeeth.

Only one remaining spot before it all kicks off on Dec 1st.

I was chuckling to myself earlier, "Butcher will never forgive Maradonna", I'm thinking Maradonna probably isn't that bothered.

Raveheart - totally agree.

I almost feel sorry for Butcher, he keeps telling everyone how he'll never forgive Maradonna but it's as if he he doesnt realise everyone up here loves Maradonna because of the Hand of God goal!

O1bhoy:

Cheers for the concern, but no worries mate is the salutation. All’s good.

Dave/Paul/Gerry/Steve/George you have mail.

Don’t know how it missed me, but it did. I live just to the east of Mount Glorious and Samford and the mountain always appears to take the brunt and direct the worst of the winds and hails to the north and the south.

Houses a mile either side of me took a pounding but I escaped with only a couple of trees down and a busted chainsaw. Others were not so lucky but I wouldn’t read too much into what our media are saying about the storms. Any given February night in Glasgow would be more than its equal.

Had a day without power that’s all that was bad.

Just spoke with Ramie and he is on his way to the hospital to visit all our mate. I’m hoping he might find a few minutes to come on and update all those who are concerned for Kano.

He did say that Kano was looking tired yesterday, but that had followed a busy weekend of visiting friends and family. Also, Kano is chuffed to bits with the cards.
If anybody else wants to send their best wishes then as fellow Celtic supporters I can assure you, they will be well received and greatly appreciated.

Kitalba

the weather in Sydney is less exciting than you have. It always seems more exotic elsewhere!! It's like summer in Glasgow here just now...anyway, best wishes to Kano and his recovery in time for 4 - in - row.

cheers

Room for one more??

Kittoch

Summer in Glasgow?, grey overcast with a likelyhood of rain.

You sometimes wonder about football. Guaranteed the Scots fans will be singing the Maradona song all night tomorrow. Terry Butcher hates him, will never forgive him, wants to fight him. We love him.

Is it just me, or is big Tel maybe in the wrong job!!

Yarranbbe Bhoy:

It is pretty wild again tonight without the lightning and the winds. Good old West coat weather.

I think I might have been guilty of a lazy post there.

Mate Ramie is just of the phone again just two minutes ago.Hopefully, he will post a wee update for all the fellow tims. He had a cracking wee story to tell about our mate and if he feels it is appropriate I hope he tells it. I know it brought a smile to my face.

Ramie has posted his e-mail address on here before no doubt he will do so again and all best wishes e-mail are read out to Kano and are also being saved for a later date.

Very interesting article, I agree with absolutely everything said there. Our ability to have a variety of different cultures and opinions whilst still standing together as one club is what makes us unique. The media in this country are becoming such a joke as their true colours become more and more blatent and they are completely discrediting themselves. Therefore, if we continue to fight the fights that need attention (ie. TFS) and laugh at the garbage they try to spout we will always come out on top.

One CELTIC many cultures!!!

HAIL HAIL

Completely agree the e-tims article 100%, hope we keep it together.

Great news on kano, and continued wishes for a speedy recovery.

Zbyszek's notice on a potential new bhoy looks good too.

There are too many good news story's today, waiting for the down side.

You are right great article-everyone who posts on this site should take the time to read it.
I have stopped posting on the songs debate as I feel people are looking in on our debate-our enemies.
The divide and conquer strategy has been used many times in the past against our support. It is a last ditch attempt by the establishment in my opinion to deflect from the crisis at greyskull.
It will undoubtedly fail again-the team are winning and winning well most weeks-the club is solid financially unlike TFOD.
United we stand Hail Hail.

I dont usually have the patience to read long scripts, but this was a wonderful piece of perceptive writing. Nobody will pull the wool over your eyes. Well done.

Zybsek,

Stilic a good prospect then?

Paul67,

They are out to get Artur one way or another in this country. They are trying to hound him out. The more they try and report and put him in a bad light, the better it is for them. Granted he does not help himself, but he's hardly murdered someone, yet it's front page news.

This according to a "ceitlc source" makes me smell a rat. How about nothing like this was quoted and it is made up? I reckon it is a made up quote from this so called source. Anybody could come away with a line like that. Lazy journalism trying to create a story.

On the other hand and Celtic are getting a bit frustrated with Artur and his antics, they need to consider.

1. Can we get a replacement of his quality like the bargain we picked him up for?

2. Brown and Zaluska are not adequate replacements.

3. He's just going thorugh a rough spell at the moment in his private life and went a bit of the rails. I'm sure the majority of us have had problems in the past and needed time to get them sorted.

My advice is for Celtic to sit him and down and GS to challenge him and show us the goalie we had the last couple of seasons.

If all fails. Shay Given of Newcastle will be looking for a new club shortly i imagine. Is his contract not running down? :)
