It's being reported in the Daily Express that Celtic almost signed Tomislav Dujmovic last month - only for the Croatian midfielder to back out of an agreement at the 11th hour and join Lokomotiv Moscow from Russian rivals Amkara.
This is the same player that Celtic were linked with back in October and the following was reported at the time:
Celtic have pulled out of a proposed deal for midfielder Tomislav Dujmovic, according to the agent of the Croatia international.
Predrag Racki claims the SPL champions agreed pre-contract terms with Dujmovic last May.
The intended deal was with a view to a move when Dujmovic, who is contracted to Russian side Amkar, became a free agent next summer.
"We spoke to Celtic six months ago and had agreed terms on the transfer, but now it looks like Tomislav will be staying in Russia," Racki told the Glaswegian Evening Times.
"We had an agreement with Celtic but, for whatever reason, they have decided to pull out of the transfer.
"It is a surprise because Dujmovic is the top midfielder in Russia and he really wanted to go to Celtic because they are one of the top clubs in Europe.
"Dujmovic is out of contract in a couple of weeks and it looks like he will now be staying in Russia with Lokomotiv or Zenit, but it is more likely to be Lokomotiv.
"It is disappointing for Tomislav, but Celtic have made their decision. We will just have to accept their decision.
"I don't have a problem with it because I have known Gordon Strachan for some time and I will continue to do all I can to bring him quality players in the future."
Interestingly Predrag Racki is also the agent of Anas Sharbini.
this is a better finish than i will get at the quiz,,0)))
My goodness I'm early
was caught out by the new post.
I will be making my first trip of the season over to see the Bhoys that weekend and will be at the quiz. It will be a good chance to put faces to names.
Is 7 not a tad early especially if anyone wanted dinner after the match?

Morning Paul and all,
See you all at the Quiz Night
craggy island gaa
From previous for Gogo
Gogo,
The Morrison Hotel is doing a special just now for doubles at the beginning of March €110 a room.
This is a very nice hotel. It'd be a good place for your anniversary. Just over the river from Temple Bar and right beside "the italian Quarter" that has some of the best Italian restaurants in the city and THE best Asian one "KOH". They also do great cocktails too.
Blooms and the Arlington are quite touristy, lots of weekenders.
Hark! The Darnel-saving Consortium!are on the Way
Did we not have a 'consortium' under the inspiring leadership of wee Jim Kerr in'94, or was it called something else?
Anyways, will be adding the Quiz to the ever-lengthening list of CQN bread and circuses-
The CQN quiz
The CQN golf day
The CQN 5-a-sides
The CQN blow football tournament, hosted in lovely Turra by the lovely Curly and the even lovelier Vicky.
can I just confirm that Marvin and I have never been there together (!)

Really? I always thought it was three words "That $£4%"£$ Thatcher".
I've heard the Doors on the Morrison Hotel can be a bit noisy..
I'll run a bath.
Malceye. hehe, it was just a coincidence, honest.
DBBIA,
Plus if your room is too small you can always break on through to the other side.....
What was the story behind "Administration-gate" on BBC Scotland last night?
Did Chick Young announce they were going under and was told to withdraw comments and apologise?
It's amazing how the UK Government has to call all sorts of enquiries if they want a retraction or apology off the BBC but David Murray gets one within minutes!
Or I could sleep all night in the Soul Kitchen..

I've spread it among my Oz mates to make sure it gets maximum coverage.

Paul - you're obviously wrong about Rangers financial situation. There's a very simple solution highlighted by our old friend Grandmaster Suck on FF. Why on earth didn't you think of this before getting us all excited about the state of the second biggest institution in the land. It's as simple as Murray signing another cheque !
There is a solution - sign a cheque Mr Chairman
By Grandmaster Suck Wednesday, 14th January 2009
There are rewards for football chairman, but there can also be a price. To paraphrase Hyman Roth - 'this is the game we've chosen.' And there are rules for chairmen who choose to play the game.
Since Advocaat left, since John McClelland became Chairman, we've been told that the skills the Chairman has so diligently applied to all his other businesses throughout his life would now be applied to Rangers.
After all this time, after all that money, is anyone mad enough to accept that Rangers are being competently run if half-way through a season and after years of a bread and water diet it's suddenly announced that to make ends meet we're going to have to flog those players - and they are all up for sale at knock-down prices - who might just be able to win the league for us and stop Celtic steamrollering to four-in-a-row and another Champions League jackpot?
It smacks of incompetence.
And along the way all the family silver has been sold, leased or tied up in deals - the Rangers Shops, land, contracts for umpteen areas of the business.
This summer we saw a high-risk gamble fall flat on it's face in Kaunas. The board thought they could save a few bob by getting to the Champions League on the cheap, save a few months wages and then sign a few bargain basement players ahead of the Champions League deadline. We fell flat on our faces and then indulged in a panic buying spree to keep the punters away from the front door.
For all the money that was spent in the summer how many have been even qualified successes? It hardly looks, smells or feels like a sleek operation. Yet we've paid our Chief Executive over £1.6million in the last three seasons to preside over this shambles. If he can't budget better than that what is the point of having him? At any price.
Selling our top goal-scorer in a league we're only won on the last two occasions on goal difference half-way through the season when Celtic have just thrown us a lifeline is utter madness.
THE FANS TO BLAME?
It started last night on BBC Scotland apparently with Pat Nevin effectively telling the country Rangers fans are ungrateful. How long before Wee Chick, Traynor, McInnes and the usual suspects all pen similar to try and set the mood music?
The Bears have played our part - we pay top dollar for season books - compare the prices in England with those at Ibrox, consider the difference in player quality, and you can't but conclude we pay way, way, way over the odds for what we get. Fact.
Pundits say we don't understand how football works, We don't need freebies and exclusives to help us 'understand.' In fact we understand perfectly.
We understand the unwritten contract - we pay, you deliver.
THE OPTIONS FOR SIR DAVE?
We can rehash the arguments for or against Sir Dave being good for Rangers. Certainly winning Nine In A Row when we never lost more than £825,000 in a season compares favorably with recent performances!
The Chairmen of Rangers have rarely been weaklings or fools. And that's how it should be - hard-bitten men who know how to turn a coin. But, and it's a big but, they also need to be problem solvers. And this current solution won't wash.
There are times in life when the only way to solve a problem is to sign a cheque.
In the past the Chairman has put in money - either to maintain his shareholding above 50% or to stave off financial meltdown.
The £50m put in a few years ago was not from the goodness of his heart. It was necessary to solve the problem of £11,000 a day in interest payments which simply weren't getting any better. Former Trust Chairman Colin Glass had got wind that Ibrox was to be leased back and the fans would effectively have to cough up the £70million generated over the following 25 years. None of us thought giving the Chairman £70million to play with and mortgaging our future was a good idea. So, we argued and campaigned and in the end there were two options left - hope a dual miracle would happen (players improve and fans stay quiet) or put in capital.
Today we again find ourselves at a crossroads. There are four options.
1/ Outside investors
2/ Get the punters to cough up to higher prices
3/ Sell more assets
4/ Inject more capital
I recall a conversation with one of the older and wiser heads on the Trust Board ahead of a meeting with Rangers when we discussed how we would hand it. He said to me - 'Murray's a man who understands he has to pay for his fun. If he has to he'll solve this problem the way he solves other business problems - he'll sign a cheque.'
Rangers fans have more than played their part in the last 20 years. The Chairman took the risks, he reaped the rewards and now he has to pay the bill when things have gone so disastrously wrong. He has to sign a cheque.
Mort @ 11.00 am,It was hard to get a city centre venue on a Saturday night, the early start is because the venue is a night club & will revert to the "jiggin'" as soon as we're finished

Murray will sign a cheque.....but he'll forget to date it. "Ooops, silly me. Send it back to me and I'll write you a new one. Now, you won't go closing me down seeing as how the cheque's in the post, will you?"
"What do you mean, I forgot to sign the second one? Oh, right. Well, I can only apologise for that oversight. My mind is all over the place at the moment. I'll get a new one of to you asap. Now you won't go closing me down in the meantime will you? Ha Ha!"
"Well of course the third one's dated 14 January 2010. That's when I signed it. What do you mean this is 2009? Do you know what? I've completely lost track of time. A new one's on its way as we speak. Now you won't go closing.....Hello? Hello? Are you still there? Bloomin' Hell Tan Man, the line's gone dead. Rangers transfer activity - leaked daily record memo
Subject: Transfer Window
All,
I am sure that you do not need to be reminded that the Transfer Window is creeping ever closer. As such it is of vital importance that each and every one of you is fully aware of your responsibilities at this very important time.
Consequently I would like to take this opportunity to draw your immediate attention to the ‘Daily Record – Transfer Window Style Guide’.
This is a document you should all be very familiar with. However, due to recent revisions it is crucial that you re-familiarise yourself with the guide as a matter of urgency.
As you know the style guide sets out clear and definite instructions on the coverage of all stories regarding the Transfer Window and related issues. Under no circumstances should these be strayed from.
Any queries or questions regarding the content of the guide should not be addressed directly to Sir David or Mr Bain but rather raised in the first instance with myself. After that all further communication will be conducted via your union/legal representative.
Transfer Window – Style Guide
(1)Rangers FC do not ‘buy’ or ‘sign’ players. They ‘swoop’ for players. The extraordinary nature of these swoops must be emphasised at all times by preceding the word ‘swoop’ with at least one of the following choices - ‘sensational’ ‘stunning’ ‘exciting’ ‘audacious’ or ‘ambitious’.
(2)Celtic FC do not ‘buy’ or ‘sign’ players. They ‘finally complete’ deals. The hugely dull nature of this event should be emphasised at all times by using at least one of the following terms - ‘protracted’ ‘long-running’ and ‘drawn out affair’.
(3)Any overseas transfer target of Rangers FC is, without fail, also being pursued ”…by a host of Europe’s top clubs”.
(4)Rangers FC must then be referred to as “battling it out for the signature…” of this ‘hot property’ and ‘wanted man’.
(5)The exact identity of these elite club’s will be selected on a random basis but must contain at least one of the current top 4 sides in Italy, Germany and Spain. One of these may be substituted by Lyon but no other French club.
(6)If the said player signs for Rangers FC then the club have “pulled off a sensational coup”. To avoid unnecessary confusion under no circumstances should the player be asked why he turned down these previously reported top clubs. Instead the player will “modestly refuse to comment on the speculation”.
(7)Any overseas player purchased by Rangers FC under the age of 21 years is a ‘wonder kid’.
(8) Any overseas player purchased by Celtic FC under the age of 21 years is an ‘unknown youngster’.
(9)In recognition of the club’s international stature it is appropriate that the transfer fees received and paid by Rangers FC should initially be quoted in Euros. After this initial use the term of currency quoted should be dropped and thereafter, whenever possible, the figure referred to only by approximate amount.
(10)Should Rangers FC purchase a Scottish player from a domestic rival then this story must be accompanied by a double page spread praising the club’s willingness to invest in home-grown talent and how this is of the benefit to the national side and indeed the country as a whole.*
(11)Should Celtic FC purchase a Scottish player from a domestic rival then this story must be accompanied by a double page spread condemning the club’s willingness to rape rivals of home-grown talent and how this is to the detriment of the national side and indeed the country as a whole.*
*Billy Brown and Jim Jeffries are again willing to contribute. However, please note due to current financial constraints within the company the expenses department has placed a limit of four fish suppers per contributor
(12)Any player linked with Rangers FC who has not made a strongly worded denial of the said move should be referred to issuing “…a come and get me plea.”
(13)Clubs unwilling to lower their asking price to meet the perfectly acceptable bid placed by Rangers FC must be strongly condemned. All stories of this nature must include the words/terms “staggering asking price” “inflated fee” “outrageous demands” and “holding to ransom”. The player involved in this deal must be referred to as “the want away star’ and it is imperative that any story fully informs the reader how the immoral stance of the selling club could “jeopardise a dream move to Ibrox” for a player “whose heart is set on a switch to Glasgow”.
(14)Clubs unwilling to up their bid to meet the perfectly reasonable fee placed on a player by Rangers FC must be strongly condemned. All stories of this nature must include the words/terms “insulting” “laughably derisory bid” “on the cheap” “deliberate attempt to unsettle” and “outrageously low offer”.
(15)The signing of an overseas player by Rangers FC must be accompanied by a two page spread stating how they will become as good as their nation’s most famous footballer. For example: Rangers’ Romanian new boy was last night tipped to be the man who could finally fill the boots of Gheorghe Hagi. Mark Hately is willing to contribute to this article.
(16)The signing of an overseas player by Celtic FC must be accompanied by a two page spread questioning whether they are good enough for the SPL. Gordon Smith is willing to contribute to this article.
(17)If Rangers FC sign a player who has – at any point of their career - been watched by any member of the Celtic Park staff (including Superstore employees, programme sellers and outsourced catering workers) then they will have “…sensationally snatched” the said player “..from under the nose of the Parkhead club”.
(18) If Celtic FC sign a player who we previously linked with Rangers FC then it will be because “After initial tentative interest Rangers decided to pull out of the chase” thus “…leaving the road clear for Celtic”. The player in question “..represented poor value for money..” and was “…no better than the players already available to the Rangers boss.”
(19)The fact that Sir David Murray owns a private jet and a vineyard in the south of France are integral elements of any Rangers transfer story and failure to recognise this will see copy spiked.
(20)Finally, as in previous years our colleague at the Sunday Mail will again be organising ‘Operation Moonbeams’ which is as usual planned for the first weekend in February. Our duty is to ensure quality follow-up coverage. While details of the current operation are being finalised you are advised to familiarise yourself with Glasgow City Council’s Draft Regeneration Project for Govan and NASA’s proposed manned mission to Mars.

If my English was better I could fabricate few similar articles per day.
Reading NEWS from newsnow gives me amusement. That story about Dujmovic is at least one month old. The source was the interview given by them to the Russian press. According to the player and his agent pre contract was ready to for signing. I don't know if that is true, but if it's true Celtic dropped their interest on the last moment. Club must have had some resons to do so.
Re. Anas Sharbini. There were two clubs from Croatia interested in the player. One was Hajduk and the other Dinamo Zagreb. Hajduk said today they are not for Anas Sharbini. Now player's agent said he will try to sell Anas to Dinamo, will search for the buyer abroad, or the player stays in Rijeka club for the next season. From that I assume that Celtic interest was not very strong.
Newspapers back pages are the scratch cards.

if they have been asked for before I apologise but this one has me puzzled as I haven't noticed anybody on Celtic websites or in the press pick up on it
Walter(the man with no surname but a Particularly nice cardigan)
stated that he 'wants' to reduce the first team by around 10 players from the 28 he has now . This means he would have a 1st team of 18 players supplemented by @ 4 youngsters I think that was his words this makes 22.
Now in an SPL game including the substitutes you have 16 players utilised all very well so far . But consider this what happens when they get a spate of injuries bit like the situation we are just recovering from what happens say if a flu bug or similar hits the dressing room do those of us in the civillized world have to watch them postpone matches and the demand extensions to the league when they start piling up.All thoughts welcome but be easy on me if you think my points are laughable.
As the quiz is in the Winchester Club, will there be any guest appearance's by Arthur, Terry or Dave ?

You're awful quiet. Did you see my question RE: Appiah last night?
Greenyin :- What I hope will happen is that the cut down squad gets boodted by a number of younger players. This wouldn't be my first choice as I would rather we had a squad with both quality and quantity but under the present regime that isn't going to happen. In our youth team and reserve team we have three or four youngsters that I feel could step into the first team if given a chance. There are another two or three that I feel may be capable of stepping up if introduced in the right way. I know that a good youth carreer doesn't mean you will make it at senior level but right now I would rather we gave them their chance.
This would leave us with a squad of around 25 and should be adequate for a season with no European football.
in the above boodted should be boosted though I'm sure a few of you wold rather it was booted :-)
Bhass Bhoy,
Channel 5 are actually broadcasting a new Minder show this month with Shane Ritchie in the starring role. Sacrilege.
I suppose it will still be better than watching the manky mob ?

Can you make it to the Quiz night?
Auldheid from last night:
"Of course predictions are risky, it all depends on the projection of existing circumstances and who knows what external factors as yet unknown will come into play? You could argue that for all SDM's decline was forecast by some, few could have seen it would take a melt down of the banking system to hasten the day".
When something is unsustainable - a business strategy, the build-up of snow on a steep slope, the weight on a camel's back - we can be sure it will come to an messy end. The timing and the direct cause of that end are rarely so clear in advance - otherwise I'd be sitting on a beach now after making big bets against the stock market last year.
"A related thought that occured to me on the latter arising from the charge in the Hugh Adam's article that SDM is more an impresario than a businessman, is that the bankers (with a b)who supported him appear to be cut from the same jib. Is it not a coincidence that two of Scotland's leading banking institutions rose too high, too far, too soon?(cheers Rumour Mill)".
"Scots used to be famous if not more for being mean, certainly for our frugality and financial prudence. What on earth happened to that attitude, how did the nation that gave the world Adam Smith lose touch with reality?"
Someone else replied 'Thatcher'. If we're going to be historical, why not blame William Wallace for encouraging the Scots to over-reach themselves? People, everywhere, always, learn (if at all) mostly from their own mistakes, not those of others, and especially not from those of the past.
The Scotish banks succumbed to a herd instinct, and followed their peers over a precipice. Why? That behaviour, like any stampede, can be traced to more immediate causes. I see the main cause of our current problems as a series of gigantic acts of economic hubris over the last 10 years by governments worldwide, with the US leading the way.
In the UK, the oveweening ego of the man who claimed ("no more boom or bust") to have abolished the thousands-of-years-old business cycle led to the government spending vast amounts of money money it didn't have and couldn't hope to repay honestly, in a vain attempt to justify that ludicrous claim. At the same time, it encouraged businesses and ordinary individuals to do exactly the same, via recklessly low interest rates.
The the resulting decade-long splurge only delayed the day of reckoning, and every month that passed without a correction magnified the strength of the inevitable resulting recession.
The negative consequences of this fiscal folly will greatly outweigh and outlast the short-term benefits, for the country and Rangers alike.
So to answer your question directly: take a bow Messrs Brown and Greenspan (along with a considerable supporting cast, headed by Bush and Blair). It's no coincidence that their reputations for economic competence are heading south at the same time as Murray's, just as quickly and just as deservedly.
"But back to fitba. Have we signed a left back yet?"
Yes! An exciting young talent from the Czech Republic, snatched from under Milan's nose!

That Herald link very much like an artical instructed by Murray last night.
I didnt see any footage of the game but Ive heard there was a banner and chants urging Murray out and support for Boyd, correct me if Im wrong.
Murray wouldnt have liked to hear that and is fed up with Boyd digging his heels in against a move.
Next day you have an artical attacking Boyd, and to quote:
'There was the obligatory rant at Sir David Murray with a solitary protest banner in the stand. There was the chorus in support of the chairman who was in attendance'
I find it hard to believe that even the most bewlidered of Rangers supporters would chant in support of Murray, timposters?
He is still using his media pals.
DBBIA :- I wish I could but I have too much on around then, in my family they seem to think Jan and Feb are for popping out babies so too many presents to buy. Though maybe it's a good thing as whoever gets me in their team would need a huge points start to try and keep up with the others.
E.U who got one question right at the last cqn quiz.
Sheany :- They did play those tunes last night and I have to admit it was funny, it's not often a wee team gets to laugh at a bigger team so I'm sure they enjoyed it.
Even the Rangers fans got in on the humor bit last night singing "Broxi Bear he's not for sale" perhaps it will become our equavalent of your "Bright side of life" song.

Pat Nevin commented on the banner last night, seemingly we should all be grateful to the management, according to him football fans know nothing about how clubs are run and we should bow down and worship the ground the chairman walks on.
The thinking mans commentator? I think not.

I appreciate your point and as you said for a season without European football but this seemed like a long term strategy to me and at one point unless rangers do end up as a mid table mediocrity, and as much as I am an optimist I am not convinced this will happen, they will qualify for the big stage and then whta happens?
Trust me I have no great interest in Rangers but it is the possible disturbance to the rest of the league primarily Celtic when lack of 1st team numbers bite.
And of course why is it that I can see this and the Scottish football press has not.

Heard from a usually reliable source Chick Young's £10M comes from
£5M operating costs (probably mainly wages)until end of season
£3M for player transfer balances still owed believed to be Davis Mendes and Lafferty
£2M intersest due on debt in this accounting period
Would this be a reasonable deduction ?

Corporate governance nonsense will have to wait till tonight.
First thoughts are that you are taking the dry, textbook, US viewpoint while I am looking at what actually happened.
Very interested on your take on the current financial malaise.
I fear our disagreement on this will be even more deep and heated.
Your thoughts on GB are pretty cheap, straight out of the current Tory playbook and as such fundamentally wrong.
We are where we are due to the instability in the world economy due to the death of the great American dream - middle class lifestyle for working class people. The killer fact is that median income in the US has fallen in real terms since 1972. Clinton stopped the rot but overall it has been a 36 yr decline.
All of this when signifant income growth has been generated in the economy overall, just a csae of those at the top reached the starosphere.
Concomminant with this has been the huge increase in consumer debt in the US where even middle class families over-reached themselves to fund the lifestyle paraded by the new super rich top 2%.
The US is currently Edwardian England on tick 100 years later.
The same dynamics have generated to huge US trade deficit which has built up over this period means that everything was on a knife-edge. Add in the peaks and troughs of the past 20 years and something had to give.
Issues to take into account -
East Asian industrialisation / need for investment.
Asian "flu" and Russian issues in 98/99.
Dot com boom with all the over-investment that followed.
Trade imbalances, rush to off shore.
9-11 and the low interest rate policy in the US.
Raw material inflation.
Iraq War expenditure - US to the fore.
House price explosion in the US, unknown before as they have all that land.
Sub-prime scandal in the US. NR was small potatoes in this company.
The UK is a small player which has been monstered by external events. All the events seem to have been a case of someone on a losing playing double or quits.
Had to end sometime.
Sub Thatcherite nonsense from DC/GO are the shrieks of the lost and the bewildered.
GB not blameless in all of this but he was doing what he had to do. 11yr record was only stopped by the monster of a global scale slump.
For the record I think he needs to do more / spend more.

I don't doubt that Minty can instruct or lead journos to publish info in his interests but I don't think the Hugh McDonald article falls into that category. He may not wish to discomfit SDM unduly as that would risk the Herald losing more readers but I'm sure he did not invent the chant in support of Lord Moonbeams.
Hugh is guilty of using language to distort the picture (a "solitary" protest versus a "Choir" of support) but the main purpose of the article was to be humorous about Kwistoffer rather than to critique the Ibrox slouch towards insolvency.
I laughed out loud at several points. It was very funny.
I have to say that, if I managed a top flight club, I would not be in favour of buying KB because he does not do well against better defences. He contributes greatly to rankers SPL challenge but gave little towards rangers Euro successes and will, I feel, fail to make the grade if Brum get promoted.
To Masty and Others ref Proofof Age for concession tickets, the following was sent into the Ticket Office earlier, following yesterday's letter and subsequent email from me;
Dear Ticket Office Manager,
Thank you for your note (in response...).
I appreciate that the club wishes to verify the details of all supporters who use a concessionary season ticket, and this is in order.
I have verified this for your assistance on a number of a occassions now, both recently and historically.
Fundamentally, I have three objections to providing any more evidence than I have already:
1) That you, a commercial enterprise, propose to keep on file the birth certificate of a minor. This is simply an unacceptable risk to the security of his identity.
2) That the clear inference to be drawn from your continuing demand for further evidence is that you believe I am lying to you, or am being otherwise deceitful or fraudulent in using the season ticket in the first instance.
3) That your demand, and it's subsequent threat, is post contractual.
I will leave it at the discretion of the club to decide whether to accept my word on the matter of my son's age, and thereafter to maintain the validity of my son's season book, or to cancel it as you have threatened.
I trust that in cancelling the ticket, you will of course refund the pro rata balance. As this seat is part of a package including my own adult seat, should you choose to cancel my son's ticket, please also cancel my own simultaneously. I will expect no less a refund from my own season ticket.
Please advise by return.
Kind regards,
Greetings all,
I have now arrived in Glasgow only to find that the place i was about to move into has gone. Anyone know where i can find a short term (approx 3 month) let?

How you doing, my flexible friend?
Did you spot the Scotsman link at 12.03?
In Andrew Smith's replies, he seems to be confident in asserting that the Record was the house paper for Ibrox. Was it a Record journo that challenged him to a fight? Could not have been Shug (or is that what was meant by 'stick to boxing") so it must have been a fat Airdrie suporter, no?
NeilR - You hit the nail on the head about the causes of this economic crisis. For the past decade, governments luxuriated in the warm glow of the so-called "miracle economy" built on cheap credit, with nary a care for what would happen when the bubble inevitably burst.
Now the same politicians and central bankers who created the credit bubble are brazenly demanding that we get into even more debt as a society to solve an economic problem caused by debt!
Unfortunately most people are fundamentally ignorant of how markets work and the government's role in money creation, so they demand that "something must be done!". Even when "something" turns out to be throwing good money after bad.
The recession should not be our biggest worry, it is an inevitable, if painful, correction the market needs to go through before stability can be restored to the system. What is more worrying is the billions and trillions of pounds being stolen from taxpayers and funnelled towards politically well-connected banks and big businesses, and the madness that is a government which openly admits to trying to spend its way to prosperity.
JJB - Just when you thought it was safe to look again ....
From Management Today
JJB admits it is heading for a £10m loss after a poor Christmas - and its CEO has lost all his shares...
More bad news from sportswear retailer JJB Sports: it admitted today that like-for-like sales fell by 7% over the Christmas period, which is likely to leave the chain somewhere between £5m and £10m in the red for the year to January 25.
To make matters worse, it was also forced to confess yesterday that CEO Chris Ronnie no longer owns his 27% stake in the business, because he was forced to hand it over to failed Icelandic bank Kaupthing last year – but hadn’t bothered to mention it to the rest of the board. Presumably there’s no way Ronnie can survive that – so it looks like JJB will also find itself looking for a new boss …
Perhaps it's a wee career opening for Sir Minty.
Is the quiz a football only quiz?
The Mrs loves quizzes.
Does anyone think that being AIM-listed has had a major (positive) effect on the running of the financial side of our club? Perhaps given that Skinty is the Chairman of a private 'institution,' his standards have slipped given the lack of regulation.
Or have I had too much coffee this morning?
Gus.
Also on the economics front, an unusually prescient report from the BBC in 2005:
-------------------------------------
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/panorama/4243108.stm
Brown's miracle economy
The Prime Minister calls him "the best chancellor for 100 years." He is the man who has overseen the longest economic expansion in modern times, and hopes one day soon to ride his economic record right into Number 10.
Panorama asks whether Gordon Brown's miracle economy is as miraculous as it seems. BBC economics reporter Stephanie Flanders examines whether we have experienced a sea-change in Britain's economic fortunes, or another old-fashioned spending binge that will eventually run dry.
As Gordon Brown prepares for a record ninth party conference as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Stephanie takes a cycling tour of Britain, to see for herself how much has really changed since 1997 - and how much has not. Along the way she interviews Brown's former right-hand man, Ed Balls, and the man who passed the Chancellorship on to Gordon Brown - Tory leadership contender, Ken Clarke.
In Cowley, Nottingham, Birmingham and the North-East, Stephanie finds an economy that has grown for a longer period than since records began - but not always with the kind of improvement in Britain's underlying performance that Gordon Brown said he wanted in 1997. In the country as a whole, exports have done badly: the trade gap has worsened every year that Labour has been in office. The productivity gap between Britain and other leading economies has barely budged and investment is at a record low.
Stephanie finds, as she travels the country, that it is spending and borrowing that has filled the gap - thanks to cheap money and cheap Asian imports. But with consumers and the Government both needing to save more and spend less, these sources of growth may be about to fall away. And outside of the Treasury, few seem very confident that there is enough left of the miracle economy to fill the gap.
Stephanie Flanders. Now you're talking.
Currently on maternity leave, one believes.
What a gal, what an economics reporter.
Come back soon Stephanie.
Naka'sLeftPeg @ 1.38, the quiz will be a mixture of general knowledge etc with a few "Celtic" questions mixed in....bring your Mrs she'll love it!

Your comments are extremely wide-ranging, I couldn't begin to respond to most of them; there is far too much space between your dots for me to understand the picture you are drawing.
A couple quick points though:
I have absolutely no idea, and a similar amount of interest, on the 'current Tory playbook'; I sing from no political hymn sheet. If the Conservatives are talking along these lines, then there is some small hope that the situation will improve if they a) win the next election and b) act in line with their words. On which, I wouldn't bet a brass farthing. Anyway, my post analysed the past, and gave no recommendations for the future; I make a living by charging for sight of my 'playbook'!
I'll close with this quote from you: "GB not blameless in all of this but he was doing what he had to do. 11yr record was only stopped by the monster of a global scale slump.
This competes with your 'Celtic are poorly run, only kept going by the fact they get CL income every year line' for belly-laugh of the week.
Try this little thought experiment. Substitute 'DM' for 'GB', and see how silly it looks.
GB has been in charge of the UK's finances for the last 11 years, and contrived to produce an annual deficit in public finances of 5%. Not in the middle of a recession, when such a figure might be justified, but right at the top of the economic cycle, and going into the biggest depression the world has seen for 75 years. He is a busted flush, a monster ego crashing to earth, a charlatan who has undone an entire country's finances, a veritable Murray of a man.
Which is not to say that the next lot will be any better....

Time only for one comment -
" .. at the top of the economic cycle, and going into the biggest depression the world has seen for 75 years"
Your words exactly, contradiction in terms I think.
You cannot be at the top of the cycle and with one bound be in a depression. No no and thrice no.
All the rest is lightweight nonsense.
The charlatan who has undone the nation's finances - I think not.
WC / 1924 = Yes
NL / 88 budget = Yes
MT over her 11 years in power = Yes
Consequently I feat your thoughts on GB appear over-excited.

Your `Leaked Daily Record Memo' on Ranger's Transfer Activity provided much amusement.
Excellent read with more than a little truth attached to it one would suggest.
madmitch
Whatever you are on, I will be happy if you can get me some.
There is no contradiction in terms whatsoever in the phrase you quote. By definition, every recession and depression ever recorded started at the top of a cycle; and it is normal for their onset to be much sharper than the renewal of growth that eventually follows. Hopefully that is clearer to you now.
As to the rest, by all means regard it as 'lightweight nonsense'. I'm surprised, though, that you reject my theses that DM has been the victim of a 'monster global slump' rather than the architect of his own downfall.
This does at least make your viewpoint consistent; it would be *really* silly to exculpate Brown while holding Murray responsible for their respective messes. So you avoid contradicting yourself, at the small cost of believing DM has just been unlucky.
I don't buy into your worldview, but I can appreciate why it is attractive; life must be so much easier when you don't need to blame the actual present-day people in power for what goes wrong, only they 'system', or representative bogeyman figures like 'bankers', or historical political figures (stretching back to 1924!) with whose politics you happen to disagree.

Guys,
Just got back in – and there is great interest in the quiz. I’ve sent a Registration Form to everyone who previously asked for details and everyone on the CQN mailing list that Pablo has been keeping up to date. Anyone else can get a form by emailing the address in the main article (cqnquiz@gmail.com)
To answer a few specific questions:
The quiz will be mainly general knowledge, although there will be some Celtic questions mixed in.
We are asking for teams of four. It seems there are a few people looking to form, or to join, a team, so get in contact with each other on the blog or directly!
The 7pm start is because we need to be out at 10:30pm. It was difficult to get a venue at all on a Saturday, and I managed to get this one for free!
We chose Glasgow because many of us will be in town for the game that day anyway. Other quiz nights in different venues could well be possible in the future …
And Arthur Daly will not be attending ...

I wouyld like to make three comments if I may.
Firstly:
That Boyhdell fellow must be laughing up his cuff at the debate over Henrick Larsson. It is one of the most nonsensical debates I have came across, since I first happened upon this great site. I repeat this is completely nonsensical!!
Secondly:
Martin 42 to say that Kenny Dalglish is not a Celtic legend,(a term too loosely bandied about), is just very very silly indeed!! Am I allowed to say that Paul?
Thirdly:
Dennis 47 Jan 13 7:29pm. If you think there can ever be any mitigating circumstances surrounding two men beating another unconscious,(and who it is said also swallowed his tongue as a result of this despicable act), and hospitalising him, then you are someone who I would not wish to be associated with.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jan/14/stephen-appiah-tottenham-hotspur
So, if he fails the trial (not good enough for a wee team in the EPL relegation zone)would we still want him? We could bring back Craig Beattie to be the resident injured player for a fraction of the wages. On trial at Tottenham but the case for Appiah at Celtic remains not proven
BBC Scotland at their usual mischief making best. Headline about the Lennon assault trial is 'Court hears Lennon finger claim'. I suppose 'Court hears Lennon kicked unconscious claim' was too straightforward ? There's also something decidedly dodgy about two of the witnesses. Both standing together, one sees Neil push one of the assailants, the other doesn't. We also have a couple of medical students who hear Neil being called a Fenian B and yet the two other witnesses didn't hear the word Fenian. hmmmm
Someones telling porkies.
Modern medical students is rubbish.
They should have been in their rooms studying for their exams, in case many years later a medical question comes up in a quiz and they are stumped.

has your wee ayrshire student not come back to you?
Blantyretim- nay, her transformation is complete and I've got a new lassie in,from Derry.
The expression "win or bust" is much overused. However, with regard to the SPL title and the plucky cash-strappeds, it seems as if it could not be more appropriate. It may even end up "win and bust" though I would obviously not want to see that happen (the firsgt bit, I mean).
BT
coorslad and vmhan will be very interested about your new lassie then...

Is the new one from Derry or Londonderry? Important when determining how long the transformation takes. Are these people just cheap labour for you....or do you get them for absolutely nothing?

Ed - Thanks for your reply, that made me chuckle.
Paul - Apologies on the language, it was a copy and paste job.
I'll post again and sort out that word if it is ok to do this?
Martin47 (last post on previous thread),
I know myself from other encounters I've had with people, however fleeting, that you can take an impression of them, which in your eyes is 100% "correct" but you find out later is not quite a true reflection of them.
It's hard to take on board other views of someone that are counter to your own, esp. when you have had a "bad" experience.
As I mentioned, Kenny is my all-time footballing hero, so I will always see the good side. Who knows, maybe you will meet him another time and he will happily sign an autograph, or then again....

Tis a pity that those in a position of leadership chose the herd instinct and ignored the maxim of living within one's means.
Adherence to the latter is what would have made them true leaders, standing on and for principles and values that reflect reality.

Check Google news for reports of the one and only President Lula of Brazil.
He said on Monday that when there was a crisis in Latin America, the high-ups at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank had all the answers and were never off the phone telling governments there exactly what they had to do.
Lula asked: "How come they've got no answers now that the crisis is with the rich countries?"
Comment on FF from the person who displayed the Murray Out banner at the game last night.
SwanseaBhoy
The reason I displayed the banner last night!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Murray has run our club into the ground IMO (I know some people may not agree and thats there opinion and I accept that). My frustration last week with Murray saying we NEED to sell one of our most important players had me nearly shaking with rage. I felt I had to do something so I did. I had the banner made and thought last night would be a good time to display it. It gave me piece of mind, that if our club are forced to sell our best players and the club does go out of buisness (the latter wont happen IMO) that at least I can say I tried to do my best to save them/it.
One man challenged me last night at the start of the game. Saying stuff like:
"Murray saved us from going out of buisness" "He won us NIAR" "He made the club what it is today". The latter I agree with, he has made us the laughing stock of Scottish football (proved last night with the St Johnston chanting). This was the only person who did challenge me which, I thought, was surprising.
I thought I would share why I had the banner made because I have been called a twat on previous threads and thought that peope may like to know why I done it.
Bri_rtid may have different reasons why he helped me fly it but you will have to talk to him about that.
WATP
Edit: Would like to thank the person two rows from the back who argued with the person who disagreed with the banner.

I rarely disagree with you but I would have preferred her drumming.
I prefer listening to wee Paul Williams singing her songs because I felt she was soul less and uninvolved.
Her version of Jambalaya is a crime against music and, possibly, humanity.
Marvin Gaye's career at Motown began as a drummer on sessions. He could sing a bit.
Also.....a drummer who doesn't even sing should never have his own group or be a solo artist (Dave Clarke 5 and Cozy Powell take note).
My favourite drummer was not real (unlike animal) but he was called after animal. Billy "The animal" Mooney of the Commitments....my brother's name (not the animal bit obviously..well, not obviously)

We'll reduce the drummers shouldn't sing rule from a Universal Law to just a helpful generalisation.
You'd never see a real vocalist, like Solomon Burke, pick up a drumstick.
Well, unless it was made of fried chicken.
How do you 'nearly shake with rage'?
bambi
I fear we are in a small minority but, honestly, I don't get her at all. It's as if you ask the singer to hit all the right notes but try to remove every ounce of emotion behind the lyrics. Some people say that, with a great singer, they could sing the telephone book. With Karen Carpenter, I feel it would go unnoticed.

Bambi, there are very many people who do not like Karen Carpenter's singing. Utterly soulless is absolutely right. I'd rather hear Gudby to Jane (spelling???) than Goodbye to Love..and what was all that interplanetary stuff?
Re Marvin Gaye. Berry Gordy allegedly said to him one day "Listen, Marv. I heard you singing the other day and you were really good... so I have no option but to ask you to turn in your drumsticks." I bet nobody ever said that to Karen!
Auldheid, too true, I never did 'get' the idea of spending one's way to prosperity, either as an individual or a nation.
Politicians are rarely leaders; it is the people who create wealth, rather than those who spend, redistribute or destroy it, who are society's real leaders. 'Do the least damage possible' is, unfortunately, not yet regarded as a reliable vote-winning election slogan - maybe some day.
"A case of greed not being good? 'Greed is good' was a funny line used to parody the deeply selfish mind-set of a small but highly-visible group of people; but it was no more than that. Self-interest is the natural instinct of every living thing and one of the main drivers of economic and social progress. Greed is self-interest pursued to the exclusion of other values or objectives, and like anything taken to excess, is usually bad.
I noticed a quality comment from Andrew Smith in the Scotsman web-chat referred to earlier in this thread. "Phone-ins.... have given the crazed a platform. And that is just the journalists who man them."
TMC - Must have been a wee quiver....
TMC- clearly once you've gone past meltdown, and rhabdomyolysis prevents any muscular activity at all.
Sheany, no probs.
StevieNoBread, I’m definitely going to the quiz now.
SFTB, Cadizzy,
In my opinion she didn't play the drums enough!! I can honestly say I've never met anyone who feels like I do about that voice. I usually get strange looks when I hear her and tell anyone she has a terrible voice. It's almost as if it's outlawed.

"Must have been a wee quiver..."
that'll be why they sing "Wee arra peepil"
I have been contemplating this post for the past 24 hours , as I know there are some who would think it mischievous .
However , the last time I dined in The Ubiquitous Chip restaurant was some 10 months ago (The restaurant note , not the bar).
Imagine my surprise when Rev Ian Paisley walked in with three others to sit down at the adjacent table . I thought very little about this except that of all the restaurants in Glasgow to choose , he selected "The Chip".
Of course the Ubiquitous Chip has been in the news again this week . I am sure there is no connection between these 2 events but you never know ...............?

gourock bhoy - my better half told me she was in there some years ago and the 'honourable' mr Paisley was at the table next to her. Must be a favourite of his..
Gourockbhoy, was he a bit sullen and standoffish (like Henrik!) when you asked him for his autograph?
Re the coincidence....maybe it's just a place that Norn Irish folk like. Maybe Neil recommended it to him.

You just better hope my mum doesn't log on here or you pair will be
having your mouths washed out with soap.
Personally I loved the Carpenters only because as a 7 or 8 year old every birthday and Christmas was sorted for a present for my mum from me and my siblings.
Dave Grohl - that boy can sing a bit, like an Octopus behind the kit too....
Oh and Prince was originally a drummer but I think only because he used to feel he could play any instrument better than anyone else (and he was probably right).

They were talking about upcoming reserve matches on The Daily Huddle last night and had footage of Milan and Niall's debuts in a win against Motherwell.
There will probably be some mention of this game on the Daily huddle tonight (or tomorrow).

CarpentersQuickNews is in meltdown over the disrespect being shown to wee Kazza.
After the treatment Henrik got yesteday I'm now worried that our new leftback might have to be able to sing and/or play the drums as well.
Paul McCartney played drums on either McCartney or Ram...also on the Ballad of John and Yoko so therefore.....not sure what my point is.
Will we have to bring our birth certificates with us to get into the quiz?
DBBIA raises a very interesting point.
Have any of the anti-Karen Carpenter heretics ever been seen in the same room as an imposter from Media House?

Ah but Wyatt's different! He is obviously no longer a drummer and his singing career is very un Soft Machine. He also sang "I'm a believer" better than Mickey Dolenz though as we know Dolenz wasn't a drummer so I don't know what my point is.

Rangers supporters launch protest campaign
by Thomas Jordan
RANGERS fans groups today launched a "We Deserve Better" campaign to try and pile the pressure on the club's board.
Chairman Sir David Murray's decision to sell off one of his leading players this month to balance the books has been met with a furious reaction from some Gers fans - who held a banner during last night's win over St Johnstone asking him to quit the club.
The agreed sale of striker Kris Boyd to Birmingham City in a £3.8m deal was the final straw for many and various groups such as the Rangers Supporters Trust and the Blue Order have now issued a statement urging supporters clubs and fans to unite and let the club know their feelings.
advertisement
Trust chief David Edgar said today: "This isn't a campaign to get the chairman out or anything like that.
"We know he is in a situation where he hasn't been able to find a buyer for the club but we want to know what direction the club is moving in and we're looking for improvements."
The statement lists areas in which he says supporters are concerned with and want explanations and they are as follows;
- Only 2 league titles in 8 seasons
- Only 2 cups won in last 3 full seasons
- Losing to the worst European opponents faced since Valletta in 1983
- A state of the art training facility, yet no advancements in technique or set plays
- No discernible strategic vision, either on or off the pitch
- No long-term transfer or team-building plan
- Only two youth players (McGregor and Hutton) of genuine quality produced in the last decade
- Selling first team players to cover losses previously made on fringe players
- Consistent failure to move fringe players on for reasonable transfer fees
- Lucrative pay-offs for failed players - Failure to profit from our most lucrative ever season
- Failure to engage with or interact with the support in any meaningful way
- Treating Rangers fans with disdain as customers instead of valuing and working with them as supporters and part of the Rangers family
- Inability to either attract inward investment, or to convince fans to invest in any meaningful way
- Reduction in the status of our club from leading football force in the land, to almost social pariah status through a failure to challenge those seeking to link Rangers with sectarianism
- A PR operation which only acts when senior club figures are personally criticised and all too often fails to defend the Rangers support
- Fan morale lower than at any time in the past 24 years

Are you still looking for a replacement for Cadizzy on the quiz night?
I cannot claim to have any area of specialist knowledge but I usually know the answers to the questions the contestants on Mastermind pass on. Unfortunately, I do not know many of the answers to the questions they get right.
Who are these pesky people "seeking to link Rangers with sectarianism"?
Some folk, honestly.
Inkybhoy
Two Bats eh?
An intriguing moniker?
You could make up a lot with that.
And I probably will.
Here's hoping you're walking without bandy legs sometimes soon :-)
Name one thing they have done in the past few years that would enable anyone, and I mean anyone, to "link Rangers with sectarianism".

`...I don`t know what my point is.` Why have you suddenly opted for stating what has always been incredibly obvious?
Are you up for the Quiz?
SFTB- Excellent, a leftback at last!
I think we are now lining up as Jinkyredstar/Subterranean/SFTB and DBBIA.
No team name as yet.
I expect Ian K. Paisley likes the Chip because it's handy for when he's been to BBCScotland to rally the troops.
Henriks Sombrero
The words link Rangers and Sectarianism seem almost too ridiculous to be true. They are way past that stage, and everyone knows it.
They reacted slowly to their financial woes, and they are reacting slowly to their sectarian woes.
So, apart from:
- A first-team player writing FTP under his autograph for a fan
- Fans making formal complaints because an opposing player made the sign of the cross
- Taking eggs benedict off the menu at the Brox
- Being sanctioned by UEFA for singing anti-Catholic songs
- Being the subject of complaints from politicians across the continent for telling the children of Irish Catholic immigrants to go home
Name one thing Rangers have done that merits linking them with sectarianism.
If I could choose a CQN er to whom I could give my quiz place, it would be SFTB. I do know that Oldtim67 had cast a glance his way but it looks like he has yet to make an offer.
My advice to Haraldina's caddy is to do the Bill McMurdo trick again (like when you got me to betray Greenock) and sign him up now. I wouldn't bother parading him in an Oldtim67 jersey beforehand. I think that might cause a stushie.

You make capitalsm sound like a drug - are you (and I think you are) an advocate of laisez-faire economics and, if so, do you forsee a similar outcome for the world economy to that of a heroin addict?
Or will there always be governments to medicate the patient out of the danger zone?
On encouragement/heckling:
Liked the discussion on this yesterday, but I would argue that footballers are NOT entertainers in th manner of stand-up comics (yeah, yeah, I know, I know, but I won't even say it). Rather, they are more akin to soldiers fighting in the fog of battle (bear with me here).
Tolstoy believed that battles were won and lost depending on the individual and collective morale of the soldiers. Despite the best-laid plans, the overwhelming force of chaos intrinsic to war sparks a natural reaction leading to disorder. When advancing, a soldier is cut off from the rest of his regiment and must decide whether to continue forward or retreat. Whether he does this or not depends on his overall confidence in his fellow combatants. If his morale is high, he - and others like him - will continue forward with the likely outcome being that the battle will be won. If he has no faith in his commanders and less in his own courage, then he will panic and flee.
I think it's the same in a football match. You can practise set-plays till the cows come home, but if you are on the field of play, you or one of your team mates make an error, and the crowd begins to wail and gnash its teeth (or throw their pies), your confidence falls and you are panicked into making a series of further errors. If, however, the crowd believes in the team and their powers of recovery and wills them forward with POSITIVE energy (think April 16, 9.25pm) then the whole team is galvanised and their belief in their own individual and colective abilities is strengthened.
That is why I (me, personally - don't want to trample on anyone's right to free speech) NEVER decry the team during a match, and do my best to ENCOURAGE.

I am with you on that all the way (well the football part anyway!). I firmly believe that a crowd which believes can affect the performance of a team tremendously.
This blog is really going to some strange places this afternoon. I mean, first we have the "ammortisation" comment - Stevie, if there is a question in the quiz it will be spelled correctly at least!
Then we have the anti Karen Carpenter comments. I just love her voice. OK, she wasn't quite as good as Janis but then who was? And she was never a drummer, just a shy girl who hid behind the drums to try to overcome the anxiety that eventually killed her.
Karen sings ...
Now, isn't that a great voice?

Where's eldiegobhoy when you really need the left back question asked?

`...but who was?` you ask. The only female singer, or maybe any singer, of whom that question could be asked with confidence that there would not be an answer is/was Maria Callas.

Henriks Sombrero, 4:51, the list of grievances posted to the Ibrox cathedral door (I assume, in true Rangers tradition) starts promisingly but ends up in a mess.
“Treating Rangers fans with disdain as customers” is simply untrue and counterproductive.
It’s about money, it’s all about money. They spent too much, in fact, they treated everyone like fans and no one like customers, which has gotten them into this mess.
“Treat me better” is a winy adolescent complaint that should never be heard from an adult who wants to be respected without reference to a clearly identified specific.
This pits fan against club at the very time the club is helpless to defend itself and unable to address any of the subjective claims contained therein without damaging the core objectives.
It is as though they have some green agent within the ranks dreaming this stuff up.
Neverbeten :-)

Setting free the bears,
Can't agree with Dave Grohl. I like his voice. Listen to the Live Skin and Bones album.
I read once that during a recording session, the Beatles were having a right go at Ringo for continuing to mess up. He said something like "ay, ay, ay, calm down, I know I'm not the best drummer in the world" to which John Lennon relied "you're not even the best drummer in the Beatles"

Cheers - I am also with myself. Not that I am advocating hussars at Celtic Park.
Kojo - i most certainly have indulged in more than one verbal diatribe. It was always the TV, however, that bore the full brunt of my hairdryer approach. I have even gone so far as to sulk in the bathroom (in the faint hope that in so doing the football gods might transform the dismal scoreline - that one never seems to work, does it?)
I think there is a difference between what is only a natural human reaction to a player making a humdinger of a mistake and constantly berating a player as he makes his way up and down your side of the pitch. Such criticism can only result in a retreat of 1812 proportions.
More appropriately
a banner from the Jungle Bhoys or the green brigade with a picture of JocK Stein saying 'I deserve better' and an arrow pointing to the orcs.

A wee bit harsh though since he probably was the best drummer in the Beatles
I think that WGS' comments that the club will not make any big money signings is an interesting one. I think we all know, and WGS has said this, that if any good player becomes available at the right price, the club is in the position to capitalise.
Having said that, getting a few Sammi type loans seems a very sensible policy.
If we need to wait untill the summer for Stilic, Lewandowski, Fletcher, Janko, Huszti et al, then so be it.

The Dave Grohl comment betrays my age. I tell my teenage boys that the guy with the hairy jumper and galactic angst that used to do the vocals before he got in the way of a bullet, had more personality than Grohl.
I wouldn't read too much into my views. Two posters on here have recently accused me of talking sense and I'm trying hard to rectify that impression.

Hello there, Leo here.
Like my fellow pop star, Jim Morrision (sp?), I'd like to say a few words about Karen Carpenter. I first met her when we were both doing Top of the Pops. She was sitting on her own doing nothing in particular since her brother,Richard, had gone to the canteen.I rather shyly approached her (mum had never really let me talk to girls) and introduced myself. "Hello there, Leo here", I said. "I really like the dresses you wear", I added."With those puffed sleeves and it buttoned up to the neck, you look a bit like I did when I started out. Obviously I added that I wore more make up and had a nice pointy hat but I felt we were kindred spirits. "Hey, wouldn't it be great to do a duet together of "When I need you on top of the world?"
Sadly, it never happened. Karen went back to the US and I spent the next 2 years trying to convince Lemmy to let me join Motorhead. (I still think I could have done a job for them). However, I regret to this day not pushing my luck with Karen almost as much as I regret working with blooming Adam Faith on that Roger Daltrey album. He was a real swine, God rest his soul.
Anyway, let's hope the Ranglers have to sell Kris Boyle and we Celtics go on to win the Premier Division League.

ST Calls For Dundee United Boycott
Monday, 12 May 2008
In recent days, Dundee United have now heaped embarrassment twice on themselves and Scottish football.
By supporting the fixture scheduling demanded by the cowardly hand of hidden forces that permeates Scottish football their anti-Rangers agenda was exposed. Now their disgraceful attack on one the most respected referees in our game appears to have reinforced their bitterness against our club.
Today's laughable 'complaint' shows all the recklessness of a Willo Flood passback.
The RST calls for Rangers to decline any ticket allocation for Tannadice next season and urges all Rangers supporters to back this course of action.
Let's see whether the loss of at least £250,000 income is easier to swallow than their anti-Rangers bile.
Patrick McGoohan RIP.

Radio Scotland was fun tonight, with the rearangers assembly and the rearrangers trust opposing each other on 'what has to be done'..but agreeing that calls for Minty Moonbeams to go are unhelpful!!!
They really are in danger of being outed as Timposters.
At least when Celtic went through the boardroom upheaval, everybody could see what had to be done and who had to go etc.
The rearrangers would start a fight in an empty hoose.
Particularly liked the rearrangers trust guy talking about the 'human tsunami in Manchester'. Now I'm not sure, but when is a tsunami a good thing? Anybody?
I think it's great that Edgar is getting so much exposure and air time. Well, would any of us rather have a sane and rational human being putting forward the alternative to Murray?

Couple of outstanding points
1) Corporate governance and BQ
Your thoughts on the relationship between a company's chairman and CEO are all correct but only within the sheltered existence of a textbook / lecture hall.
As mentioned previously I find your viewpoint a bit to dry and rigid to reflect the working life of BQ at CP. You talk about the easily identifiable elements of corporate governance as if they were the only ones in play during his time at the club. Consequently you miss out the following -
1) 600lb gorilla in the corner -- DD the "Irish Raj"
2) MON, the tech specialist to give him a business title who seemed to call quite a few of the shots.
With these extra dimensions to the running of the club the text book goes out the window and it is all down to money, performance and personality just as it always is.
Regarding BQ sticking to the norms of setting the direction and keeping the board under control the public record shows otherwise - phonegate and the squabbling over EPL wage levels.
Consequently I think that the club was far from the business norms that you put forward when BQ was chairman.
What the future holds with JR in the big seat I don't know. Bringing PL back down to earth would be a good place to start.
However that is another debate for another day.
2) Next up your tirade against GB.
It was over the top in my opinion to the extent that it was far more pointed than anything I have said about BQ. As has been mentioned before we all have opinions but the content was over the top and I felt duty bound to reply with an alternative viewpoint.
My position on this has been re-inforced with some of your later comments on the need for economic orthodoxy in this time of financial distress. I find such talk of kitchen table economics / living within your means as simplistic to the point of being dangerous in these troubled time.
What is right for the individual can be wrong for society if enough people become involved. I do not want to see the 1930's played out all over again due to the the stampede to conserve cash no matter the consequences to society.
However I fear that the Herbert Hoover CSC on here is gaining members at a rapid rate. So much for the collectivist, progressive instincts of the support.
Regarding the current business cycle, the normal pattern has been hard to determine given the long period of growth and the stumbles along the way. My thoughts we have had the "US TV Show" of economic cycles, that is "Twin Peaks". One in 99 and the other in the first half of 2006. The national debt did not grow by 5% of GDP in either of those years, consequently you may want to re-visit that particular idea.
Finally on to my comments about our current financial strength and where it came from - my thoughts are three years of CL group stage participation.
First up do you agree with our current financial strength?
The only alternative for me was the last years of FMcC, however we did not have a training ground so the figures do lie.
If you agree that this is correct the question then has to be why now? What is so different from the MON years for example? That is where the three years CL money comes in.
Next up is how did we manage this feat which eluded even MON.
1) SPL winners 2005/06 = Eck was found out big time and the Flats implosion was nicely timed.
2) SPL winners 2006/07 + good game in Moscow = Again the TFOD played their part with the PLG mutiny. Add in PH's goal and we scraped in by the width of AB's glove.
3) SPL winners 2007/08 = Seven game emotion driven recovery in the face of TFOD collapse and a horrible Dec.
The question here is this the best three years of football the club has played in the past 15 years?
Answer = No.
Is it the best level of talent the club has had in any three year period?
Answer = No.
Is this the happiest the support has been over a three year period?
Answer = No.
Consequently this is why I say that we are poorly run.
We have spent lots but delivered little.
The wage level is on the rise with no attendant increase in quality.
I fear we are looking at a Black Sunday level of performance especially as the defence offers hope to the whole SPL.
We are a poorly run club that have allowed this scenario to develop.
Something has to give.
Kojo
Indeed
There is the human perspective that forms the world, which is much as you described, lets call it The World. And then there is Reality, lets call it that.
What we are witnessing now (and will again)is When World's Collide (I'll bet you remember that movie.)
As you say its no one fault, its just the way thing are.
There are a set of values/principles based on Reality and a set based on The World. We as a species appear to prefer The World to Reality, short termism (or Time) to Eternity.
But that is how we got into The World in the first place, although I'm not sure if we chose to go, stumbled through a wardrobe or were pushed.
I was just musing that Scots in power with their reputation for economics and indeed prudence were no more impervious to the temptations of the World than any others.
Perhaps we, as a species including Scots, should place more emphasis on the prudence/wisdom than the economics?
I'm not holding my breathe, I make my own choices whilst others make theirs.

Do not want to turn this into a love in but I really enjoy your musings and how you express them.
Celtic star Lennon 'assaulted over insults'
By Sam Reeves, PA
Wednesday, 14 January 2009
Former Celtic captain Neil Lennon was subjected to a violent assault after getting into an argument with two men who apparently insulted his team's performance, a court heard today.
Lennon, 37, a coach at the Glasgow club, was punched to the ground and then repeatedly kicked as he lay unconscious, a witness told the High Court in Glasgow.
The attack in the west end of the city came to an end only when a bar worker intervened, the court heard.
David Whitelaw, 47, and Jeffrey Carrigan, 43, deny carrying out the assault in the early hours of September 1.
Liam Cameron, 24, a bar worker, said the men apparently mocked the coach about his side's defeat that day to Old Firm rivals Rangers and insulted his ginger hair colour.
He told the court he believed the men addressed Mr Lennon, who was not in court today, first and that something was said about the football score.
"Neil Lennon's reaction was the finger."
The men also called Mr Lennon a "ginger c***", Mr Cameron added.
"Mr Lennon then said 'What did you call me?'," according to the bar worker.
After raising his middle finger at the pair, Mr Lennon followed them round a corner during the incident in a bar area.
Mr Cameron, who was smoking a cigarette outside after finishing work in nearby bar Jinty McGinty's, heard raised voices and went to see what was happening. He found Mr Lennon "face-to-face" with one of the men.
The men involved in the attack were referred to as number one and number two in court.
Mr Cameron said: "As I walked round, I seen an argument between number one and Mr Lennon, and number two punched Mr Lennon on the side of the head.
"Neil Lennon went down backwards, his shoe came off. He hit his head on the cobbles when he went down."
This left him "completely, completely unconscious", the bar worker said.
He added: "He was kicked in the head a few times, I am not sure exactly how many times, more than three."
The bar worker said the attack came to an end when he intervened, pushing one of the men away from Mr Lennon as he lay passed out in the street.

Flanders vs GB
Interesting programme.
First thoughts that it was a TB hatchet job to put GB's gas at a peep.
The main point for me is that it wasn't a considered and detailed piece offering a comprehensive view. It was a sensationalist piece looking for issues to tarnish GB. The description provided by the BBC just about says that itself.
Consequently the agenda wasn't that hidden.
A lot of what was said in the programme was stating the obvious but my issue with it was a lack of background and context. Why were people prepared to borrow / consume?
The dry, cashless, joyless economic expansion of the JM years after Black Wednesday must have had something to do with it.
However much the local issues with debt through under-funded consumption may have troubled people at the time, including myself if I'm honest, it was not this that brought about the Credit Crunch.
Small potatoes compared to the US.
In addition GB scaled back planned public spending growth after 2005/06 so he saw the issue as well as most.
However I do agree with him that investment in the public realm had to priority after the Thatcher/Major years.
Consequently file under "Broken Clock".
The BBC got it right twice in 11 years.

I'd just like to make one point.
What I was saying was that this would be seen by many whose views on Neil Lennon have been tainted by bigotry as a sort of mitigation.
I think you knew that , but wanted to thunder indignantly to Neil's defence.
What Celtic fan, or indeed decent person, would consider a push to be mitigation for a savage beating?
I'm not really bothered whether or not you consider me a worthwhile person.
The grounds on which you choose to insult me, however, seem pitifully thin.

any business can only be evaluated within the environment it operates in. on the basis that our environment is principally the spl, then we are an unqualified success in sporting terms, and a success financially, we have clearly established a strong youth programme...we are signing talented young players from various european leagues...something you demanded at length on previous occasions...we could be more attractive on occasion other than that i see no major problems....the club has direction, strategy and a plan...and it is delivering
you should be pleased to be a celtic supporter in these times..if you are so dissatisfied with Celtic, we would have to place you on suicide watch if you were a rangers supporter

BREAKING NEWS: Kaka Rep Says Leaving Milan For Rangers Is "Not Impossible"
The Brazilian star's representative has said that if a deal is agreed between the clubs, his client would consider a move to Scotland
Rangers do stand a chance of landing Milan ace Kaka this month, according to his representative, Diego Kotscho.
Kotscho, having already spoken to Italian press and insisting his client cares about a lot more than money, today spoke exclusively to Sky Sports News and said that a move is nevertheless not out of the question.
"We know about this meeting yesterday in Milan," he said. "For Kaka, we have to wait for the [agreement] between the two clubs. "It's not just about money. We have to see a good project and if Rangers can become one of the top teams of the world - then we can negotiate to join them."
Happy In Milan
The agent, speaking from Kaka's hometown of Sao Paolo in Brazil, refuted the notion that his client has become unsettled by the arrival of fellow big names, Ronaldinho and David Beckham. "He's very happy in AC Milan," he declared. "He's happy with who he works for. It's not a problem for him to play with David or Ronaldinho and the top players in the world."
He did, however, end by saying that the SPL has its attractions - with Kaka having said himself that the idea of playing there if things went awry with Milan - and ultimately, a deal is possible with any club if a fee is agreed with Milan.
"Of course the SPL is one of the best leagues of the world," continued Kotscho.
"It's not impossible, but they need to have a deal with Milan."
The Scottish press have been in a frenzy speculating that the transfer could be worth anywhere between £100-120 million and that the attacking midfielder himself could earn anywhere between £200,000-a-week (over 25% increase on his current, already highly lucrative salary) to the ridiculous realms of £500,000 per week, which would come to £26m earned per year.Money is no object says Rangers chairman David Murray I always make sure this club deserves what it gets

Just had an uncomfortable thought. The centenary season was 21 years ago, seems more recent than that. Which it's self was 21 years after lisbon. When guys then spoke about lisbon it always seemed so long ago to me, while for them it must have seem like yesterday.
However much I look back to the centenary season with affection, something younger fans must find puzzling,"a league and cup double, so what", it rather puts both the lisbon lions achievements and infact recent successes into a sort of perspective.
Does this resonate with anyone of my age( 71 is my year of birth rather than my age!!)

There was many great things about the centenary season, one I miss was actually loathing their manager for reasonable and morally acceptable reasons.
Souness was the most arrogant, objectionable manager of any team I can think of, the governor paul ince had potential but thankfully he's finished.

Female vocalist - Dusty Springfield or Aretha Franklin.
At last some sense, Gary67 - the voice of reason. Dusty and Aretha, the queens of soul.
I was once on the Lochee # 1 bus coming back from a game and we stopped to help some people at the side of the road (their car had broken down).
Anyway, lo and behold was it not Aretha and her manager!
Turns out she was touring Scotland "on vacation".
When she saw our scarves and Celtic tops she treated us to an hour of Celtic songs all the way back to Dundee. Her all time favourite is 'Oh Hampden in the sun"
I had goosebumps the size of gobstoppers when she sang that song.
Another thing, she finished our carry out! It was worth it however just to hear her sing.
She was made an Honorary Member of The Lochee Sons of Donegal CSC by the committee
Anyone else remember this occasion?
The centenary year was different for the fans. Every game mattered in a way that was new to us and the determination to keep going was extraordinary.I mind Alex Smith who I think was manager at Aberdeen (or was it St Mirren) then saying that playing Celtic was like playing against a hundred year cause, and he was right. The winning goal in the cup final took Celtic fans to a new high. It wasn't just the 11 players who won the double, we all did.
There have been many moments since then but the centenary year, game after game, was something really special.

Thank you for the lesson in 'real life' corporate governance, but it really wasn't necessary. I have never said that people at Celtic Park or anywhere else should, or do, stick robotically to their job descriptions, which is the Aunt Sally of a position you seem to be trying to construct for me.
You mention a couple of episodes which clearly illustrate that Brian Quinn had reservations about some things being done by other club employees, and expressed these to the people involved and other colleagues. That is absolutely right and proper.
What he did NOT do, was to make decisions for senior management figures who have been given responsibility in their allotted areas. He did not veto the re-signing of Bobo Balde by Martin O'Neill and Peter Lawwell. You have criticised him for that. I praise him for it.
Why do I say so, when it turned out to be a rotten bit of business for Celtic? Because mistakes will always be made in every organisation at every level; but the only way the organisation can progress is if people are given freedom to act within their own field of responsibility and expertise. THAT is a 'real world' management lesson which I'm Brian Quinn evidently learned decades ago, and which I hope you'll eventually take on board.
Your conclusion is that Celtic are badly managed. I have refuted (to my own satisfaction at least) the examples you attempted to provide, and I hold up the club's current position as evidence that your current worries are are misplaced as your past ones.
Your other comments are however like a beacon of insight, clarity and accuracy compared to your economic analysis. Are you at all au fait with the theories of the Austrian school of economics? Your dismissal of my earlier comments as 'kitchen table economics' implies you are not. Disagree by all means, but slighting a substantial body of work in this way reflects badly on you.
Most of what you say in this area is too general or incoherent to reply to sensibly. One specific thing you say is that "The national debt did not grow by 5% of GDP in either of those years, consequently you may want to re-visit that particular idea"; unfortunately, I have said nothing about the national debt in either of these years.
On Celtic's finances, you ask: "First up do you agree with our current financial strength?" I don't understand the question. I do agree that we're currently in a position of financial strength relative to our rivals and our own recent past - is that what you meant?
Yoiu say: "The question here is this the best three years of football the club has played in the past 15 years? Answer = No." The best football played? That's subjective; my own opinion is that there was more fun to be had for lovers of attacking football in the Tommy Burns years. It IS the most successful three years of tootball in the last 30 years though.
"Is it the best level of talent the club has had in any three year period? Answer = No." Agreed, as per my e-mail from 5am this morning to Auldheid, on the last thread. It is however the most 'bang for the buck' we've had out of our football budget in any three year period.
"Is this the happiest the support has been over a three year period? Answer = No." Goodness knows how one measures such a thing, but I'd say we were happier during the MON years.
I conclude, based on my own answers above and in previous posts, that we are in pretty good shape after several difficult years, with strong finances, a management team getting the best out of the resources available to it. We stand ready to deliver on Paul's GoD predictions over the coming seasons, even if Rangers do dig themselves out of their current predicament.
You conclude: "Consequently this is why I say that we are poorly run. We have spent lots but delivered little. The wage level is on the rise with no attendant increase in quality.
I fear we are looking at a Black Sunday level of performance especially as the defence offers hope to the whole SPL. We are a poorly run club that have allowed this scenario to develop. Something has to give."
That will be my sides if I don't stop to clutch them. Sometimes it's best to let your debating opponent's own words do your work for you.
madmitch, you are a good Celtic man and I think I'd enjoy talking about these matters with you much more if we both had a pint to hand. I hope you are just as miserably wrong in May about the state of our club as you have been ever since you came on the board. Either way, the beers are on me if we are ever in BBs together.

Had a wee scan of a couple of footy biogs and gleaned the following
MEL STERLAND's= he shared a room with cooper and said ; cooper always talking about how much he hated 'fenians'. perhaps of its time but more you hear of cooper the more of a bigot he becomes.
GRAHAM ROBERTS = HIS WIFE WAS REDUCED TO TEARS BY MURRAYS WIFE. Murrays wife gave her a serious ticking off because her baby son had green shoes!! Robert's wife was so upset at the rudeness and stupidity she wanted to return to England.
His old firm debut was actually the only match he ever won against Celtic.
He refused to attend any sponsor's event cos celtic players would be there and he hated them & wasnt prepared to hide it!
Although he says Chris Waddle was a real big rangers fan he also mentions that Glen Hoddle was a huge Celtic fan!
Like the Rangers he is SKINT! Cant even afford a car, he borrows one off Barry Ferguson.
(His side of the story is that he was stitched up by Joe Miller over the Clyde racist thing..... and you know what, I believe him)
LARRY LLOYD= His biggest pal in the Forest team was John Robertson. Lloyd says Robertson loves 3 things; his family, Forest & the Celtic.
RRC ALDO
Girlschool and Motorhead collabrated on a St Valentine's Day Massacre special single one year. Think I might still have it in the wee collection.
Girlschool were signed to the same record label as Motorhead (Bronze I think) and toured with them several times. Think it was the Overkill tour I first saw them in '79 or so. Their biggest hot was "Please Dom;t Touch) which they performed with Motorhead as HeadGirl. Sure I've got the single somewhere ...
The band is actually still going I think, although without original lead singer Kelly Johnson who died a year or two back from cancer.
