We know what we're up against
I don't know about you, but I'm in the mood for this game now. Get it underway, score the first goal of the afternoon in Scotland, and then see who have the nerve for the battle.
In reversing a decision to speak at a Masonic event in Larkhall, discredited referee Stuart Dougal, fired a barb at his critics, saying: "I do not want to give any fuel to people who live their lives in the belief that everything revolves around conspiracy theories."
He clearly misunderstands what a Conspiracy theory is. It would be a conspiracy theory to suggest that the Masons of Larkhall cultivated an affinity with a then-serving-referee, without substantial evidence.
"Who's the Mason in the black" is a conspiracy theory; the tale of Stuart Dougal and the Masons of Larkhall is not in this category.
If Mr Dougal is under the impression that his audience would be anything but overwhelmingly exclusive and partisan he has made yet another mistake. I would be no less stunned if he agreed to speak to the James Connolly Society, which, of course, would cast doubts on his partisanship and judgement.
We know what we are up against, but I still think we will win.

As for the article.....only in scotland................
No!
Speak at the James Connolly Society?
It's enough for officials to have Irish names for their integrity to be called into question.
Double standards as usual from Rangers and those who love them.
May all their efforts flounder.

From the tail end of the last.
What an interesting point you raise.
Until reading James Kelman, I had never seen piece, as in a piece, written down. I'm not sticking to that spelling just to annoy you, but because it's what Kelman wrote and writes, so who am I to question it?
Now, what's really interesting is that Jimmy Kelman refers to a cheese sandwich as a piece on cheese. On. Who'd have thought it? I've only ever said: "Piece n cheese". But I would have bet the house on it being piece AND cheese.
"We know what we are up against, but I still think we will win."
Win the game? Yes
Win the league? Out of our hands and this is where the problem lies. More worringly, this is where those with "partisan" views may excert influence.
Paul67,
I wish kick-off was NOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

I need to turn this nervous energy into noise!
Bring it on.
It really is silly to hit F5 in the hope that I will get in there first, but its the only thing that has brought a smile to my face in months.
I wrote on Strachan’s appointment that we would know that he was an exceptional manager when the EPL clubs started calling. They haven’t yet. Will they soon I wonder? No.
I agree with Paul we are up against it in every way possible, the SFA’s position and statements over the last few days are scandalous. Dougal seems pretty stupid to me and his leanings a blatant. There is NO conspiracy theory just fact. Even Mrs HT agrees.
I still think we will win on Sunday, but I am willing to bet my mortgage on some dodgy decision making a Tannadice too. DU will win though and it will make 4IAR all the better. But, I do hope we get a better manager over the summer.

Paul67,
firstly. the main reason we are up against it is not due to outside influences such as officials and there allegiences although these influences. the main reason is that we have been rubbish this season.
for being rubbish I beleive we can and will win this league as long as the officials do not go out of there way and nail their big blue\orange flags to the mast on Sunday.

Paul67, we all know now we are up against the establishment this weekend and we can see the following take place:
Sandaza yellow first 5 minutes
United keeper battered by one of their thugs
midfield players yellow carded
Our midfield will be carded early on also, but hearts will put out weak team.
Then after we get that early goal - penalty at Tannadise, we will win, they will get draw, Scotlands Shame have refs in the bag this weekend.
The league should have been won 3 months ago.

Seeing lots of posters hoping that Strachan goes this summer but there don't seem to be many suggestions as to who will replace him?
Just who do we want to take over at the helm? Perhaps a more pertinant question would be who would be willing to come here, David Moyes name has come up a couple of times on other websites/forums but I can't see him leaving a top 6 Prem club for us.

Paul,
Well said.
I was sitting in the kitchen last night and listened to the first 5 or 10 minutes of Clyde Phone-in.
Darryl Broadfoot (or was it King? Both the same to me and I hope they both read this and are affronted) said that Dougal's withdrawal pandered to the "extremists" on certain "messageboard websites".
I almost choked on my dinner.
Fraser Wishart stated that he saw no problem with Dougal speaking at a Masonic event and that after dinner speaking would earn him some extra money.

You, I and everyone on this site are being branded extremists for hold or giving an opinion on this matter.

Intersting to see that you have allowed Mr Moyes the decency of a forename.

The Curious Case Of Gordan Strachan
Irrespective of what happens on Sunday afternoon, Celtic are at a crossroads with a divided support. We are in desperate need of a manager to unite the support. Team 4 is no better than when he came.
Andy- my ideal candidate would be Jose Mourinho; unbeaten at home for 115[!] consecutive games with Porto, some wee English team and now Inter.
Mourinho may not wish to fulfil his childhood dream of managing the famous Glasgow Celtic but I think we are one of those clubs who need a' Messiah' type of figure to lead us- a Stein, Clough or O'Neill rather than someone with a more technocratic approach.
OF course aforementioned Messiah would also have to have a keen footballing brain and also be able to see the big picture and the wood for the trees.
I just hope it's not wee Roy Keane.

I don't buy into the conspiritory theories. If I was a ref I probably would favour the celts more than the oposition but to be able to make that much of a difference over a season is unrealistic.
The Celts have to go out pump Hearts, have utd beat them and the title will be ours. Not really deserved but as long as they don't win it.

After sunday I was adamant I wasn't going this sunday, fed up with negative tactics, tippy-tappy passing, lack of cutting edge up from etc. however I have now calmed considerably.
Consider the following: If the roles were reversed, and we had to go to tannadice needing a win, whilst Rearrangers hosted hearts, would you be confident, especially given our away form this year?
In addition I read recently that there away form is as bad as ours, not quite, however they do have one game remaining, conveniently, away from home. At the moment we have both won 10 and drawn 6. They have lost only 2 to our 3. So...........

FOR NOW ALL WE NEED TO DO IS BELIEVE.
In order to get away from all the rubbish being spouted from the likes of Gordon Smith about action taken by Rangers (when there has clearly been none)and so on. I tried to look at the kind of useful stuff a Football organisation could be sharing with the populace.................like who might win the Fair Play position and what they must do, explain the CL qualification route for 2009/10 etc etc etc.........factual stuff that might inform.
A glance at the fate that will become the team which does not win the SPL this week.
This scenario has been reputed to cost the losers a minimum of 15 million pounds.
I am not so sure about the maths on that for a wee country like ours and 2 well supported teams involved but it is a good paper headline.
Either way qualification for the CL does look tough for the runner up. The team who do not win will have 1 or maybe 2 big extra revenue earning matches early in the season however and a good possibility to progress post xmas. The team from the CL has no such liklihood especially Celtic who might well be in Pot 4.
Even if the runners up do get beaten at the 4th round stage (2nd game) they will be guaranteed a place in the group stage of Europa Cup which will have 6 games (3 at home) and earning potential depending on the draw.
If the runners up on Sunday were to qualify then they would gain significantly from the extra matches, and get the CL benefit.
The challenge is that the Rd 3 opponents will be Twente Enschede or Moscow Dynamo (mid season in Russia), or the Runner Up from Greece / Turkey or Romania.
The Rd 4 opponents would in all probability be 1 from Arsenal, Lyon or Marsailles, Juventus or Fiorentina, Athletico or Valencia, or Bayern or Stutgart or Shaktar Donetsk.
Rangers might get a benefit from their good coeff if they were to make it to Rd 4 depending on who else qualifies, Celtic would be unlikely to. Either way the draw could be really tough.
The route to the CL will be tough, just another thing to play for on Sunday, money at stake......but not likely to be a net of the £10 or £15m that folk reckon. A meaningful tie with Bayern / Arsenal / Athletico or Lyon would net over £3m in its own right ! Again or esteemed media seem to be not letting the facts get in the way of a good headline.
The Incredible Peter Martin Experience writes as follows in today's Evening Times. Reasonable enough piece for once.
Dougal full-time whistle too late
STUART DOUGAL has called time on his career a week earlier than scheduled, but he should have blown the whistle a lot sooner.
The minute he picked up a viral infection and then subsequent injuries, was the signal he should have gone.
Instead, like a boxer who doesn't know when to quit, Stuart went back into the ring and got caught with more than a few sucker punches.
Twenty four years as one of our better referees all forgotten about in one disastrous week when where he fell foul of Craig Levein's annual rant, the deceit of Kyle Lafferty and the wrong interpretation of an incident from his assistant, which prompted a red card for Madjid Bougherra.
As if to add insult to injury, he then withdrew from a scheduled after- dinner bash at the Larkhall Masonic lodge this Friday. Honestly you couldn't make this up!
I've never considered Stuart arrogant, bigoted or bias in favour of the blue side of Glasgow.
If anything, he is guilty of poor judgement in agreeing to attend an event in a venue that left him wide open to criticism from the conspiracy loonies.
He was, however, off the pace mentally and the match sharpness that he once displayed as Scotland's No.1 official had deserted him.
It will happen to us all at some point in our own careers. The difficulty comes in dealing with it and accepting your time is up.

If justice were to be done and a Review Panel can be called swiftly in the pursuit of justice (Aye I nearly had an irony attack there)then the just outcome after last Saturday's events would have been:
Mulgrew - Not Guilty,
Bougerra - Not Proven
and Lafferty - Guilty.
In the interests of justice if the Review Panel that has been convened with such haste can deem Bougerra Not Proven and Lafferty Guilty, using the same video evidence medium, then why can Lafferty not miss the game by the award of a red card with effect from last Saturday?
That would be just and a more fitting punishment and warning to all cheats. In the interest of weeding them out of the game, if G Smith really has a passion for doing so, why has he not taken the process the SFA used to look at the match events to its logical conclusion? It must be in his power to do so.
OK a Lafferty suspension will not have the same impact as losing Bougerra but if Mulgrew is free to play based on the Review Panel's decision why is it that Lafferty cannot be bound by the decision of the same hearing? G Smith should be asked to answer.
That would be the just outcome for its not only that they want their cake, they want to eat it in front of everyone too.
I hope it chokes them.
On Dougal. His response is indicative of the mindset that is used to having its own way for so long and has been so perplexed over the last few years as reality dictates otherwise.

Speaking of Davie Moyes. I worked with a bloke in the late eighty's who went along with a few fellow junior players went to Shrewsbury Town for a trial. Moyes was a senior first team player and i think Shrewsbury captain and he apparently singled out the Celtic supporting lads and gave them a bit of a time. Singing the sash, throwing boots at them making them re polish boots, calling them Fenian B's. The lad did not have a good word to say about him.

They are very nervous, and really desparate. They are however united for this week. Fans / Team / Manager / Board etc.....We do not have that hunger or alignment.....hopefully the week's revelations of what Celtic is up against will remind our crowd on Sunday what we need to do !
Someone posted the 79 game earlier, if ever there was an average group of players (being kind) propelled by desire, belief and a great support it was that night.
A win will heap pressure on Rangers this week. I personally think any win will do. We do not need 3 nil in 30 mins, they will be more nervous if they do not know what they need to do. I would be in favour of us scoring to take the lead with 5 mins to go to be honest. Not sure my nerves could stand it though.
just for debate is there any manager out there that meets the heady expectations of us celts ie: being celtic minded
how many of us know of celtic minded managers that would do the job
Mort did a great job yesterday in putting forward a coherent Devil's Advocate defence of what has gone on since the split this season, justifying things from a Rangers point of view.
Thanks to him and everyone who took the trouble to answer the question, although I would have expected better from someone as erudite and well educated as that great man of medical science, DBBIA, than: "We arra peepul."
Nevertheless, their double standards get to me. I'm trying not to let them but it's not working.
Tom Murphy has been publicly pilloried for having the temerity to be called Murphy and still turn out as an official at a few Rangers matches. I know everyone knows the argument, but let's say it was the Netherlands and the coach of a rival team of Ajax complained about an official having a Jewish-sounding name. You would never ever hear the end of the condemnation and the coach would lose his job.
Then, because an official who helped Rangers cheat their way to an advantage in a critical match (you should have seen this bit of my post before I edited out all the emotive stuff and decided to mention just the facts), is to address, a week later, a gathering of Rangers supporters in Larkhall, the place where international corporations are taken to task for having the wrong colours in their corporate logos and green traffic lights are no-go, we feel entitled to mention that the whole thing stinks of a lack of propriety and objectivity and are labelled 'extremists' for our trouble.
I work in England. The long-suffering Liverpool fan I share an office with must be tired of the tales I tell her of football administration in the best small country in the world. But she thinks it stinks too.
When Gordon Smith came out and commended Rangers for their swift actions regarding Kyle Lafferty he left a bitter taste in the mouth by passing a snide remark to Willie Miller, the Aberdeen Director of Football.
He said: "I appreciate Willie Miller's recognition that I've tried to address the subject of cheating in football since I came into the Scottish FA job."
"It's not been easy getting the message across that it should be discouraged and eliminated in every event."
"I would see it as real progress if clubs started to react to such behaviour when perpetrated by their own players. This would, in my opinion, clean up the game very quickly."
"From Willie Miller's comments I feel he would now react in the same way if an Aberdeen player was ever guilty of such behaviour."
"We all know and understand that simulation has no place in Scottish football."
I don't know if Willie Miller has responded to this but if was so inclined he could respond along the lines off:
"We don't tolerate cheating at Aberdeen Football Club and if any of our players is proved to have done so we will act swiftly to punish. I agree that actions should be taken at club level but without something meaningful coming from the head of the SFA who knows exactly what punishment each team will dish out. Some might have different views to different actions. If Mr Smith really wants to eradicate cheating and diving in the game, he needs to lead from the top. The 'bringing the game into disrepute' charge is one he could look at. Any player accused of cheating could be charged with bringing the game into disrepute and if guilty suspended for 3 matches and fined an appropriate amount which will go to charity and be disclosed."

I thought along similar lines after the final whistle on Sunday. Our home form is as formidible as their away (and ours!) form is rubbish. The biggie for me is that it wiped out the Goal Difference issue that would have been the factor if we were both going into the final game level on points (2003 anyone?). WE simply have to play to win, no more and hope DU and them play to their recent form.
cta!
This is the usual mega-optimism here before big matches. Then if the results aren't satisfactory, the venom comes on this site.
All Celtic can control is Sunday's game. I think that will be 2-0 to us but unfortunately I can see the same scoreline at Tannadice to the Dark Side, a match outside our control.
It's natural that people project what they want to happen onto what they think will pass. You see this when someone says "I've got a tenner on Caldwell first goal and Celtic 4-1. Sounds good to me."
Just for your own sakes, don't go building your hopes up too much. Concentrate on helping Celtic through the Hearts game. What will be will be.
Moonbeams
The only time seedings are not involved in CL is if a lower seeded team beats a higher team in round before and the draw has already taken place for next round.
Celtic will probably be seeded in Round 3 but would not be likely to be seeded in Round 4 unless there is an unlikely series of results in next 2 weeks and thus would not benefit from this happening this year.
Rangers will be seeded in Round 3 and are about 50% likely to be seeded in round 4 depending on the results of the next 2 weeks in Germany / Italy / France and Spain.
It will be much clearer after this weekend, not least in our own back yard !
Roll on Sunday... and roll on next season...
The pressure is on Rangers... they must be massive favourites, but they still have to beat a team that they just cant buy a result against. We may have gifted it to them, but the title is their's to throw away, and I really think they might...
That said, this season has been a big let-down. Win or lose this title, we need changes. We won 3IAR thanks to Strachan's superior football brain, in my opinion, but if we win the title this year it will be in spite of his pride and at times odd team-selections. Please, WGS, play our best players in their best positions and sign a number 10 and a left-back, or move over and let someone else do it...
and again people.
David Moyes.
Just 2 weeks ago he spoke spcefically to the Scottish Media saying the Premiership was too exciting to leave.
Why would he be coming to Celtic???
stop believing the papers
Burnley,
Agreed. Any win will do, and like you I am not sure if I could cope / survive for 85 minutes and both games at 0-0.
IMO, if we go ahead early it will heap the pressure on them to attack and they will leave themselves open at the back, to a very good counter attacking team.
I don't care how we do it, as long as we do it.
I don't like making predictions but;
Celtic to win 2-0.
Dundee Utd to win 1-0.
Celtic Champions.

The Greek / Czech / Turk and Romanian runners up are the other likely options for the Round 3 opposition all of which could be interesting.
The losers in Round 3 do get a lifeline of a Round 4 Europa Qualifier berth in which they would be seeded I believe.
lubo1977 my point exactly
all we have heard about in four years is returning to celtic ways
i want a manager who sends us out on the pitch ready to bully the opposition like o'neil instilled in us and for god sake ocassionally shoot
strachan in my view has tried to micro manage instead of inspiring saying he did not really need to give the lads a team talk in the last few weeks
hopefully he gets right into them this weekend and we can strut our stuff again chests puffed out
Click-the-ads,
Exactly, as soon as they only beat Aberdeen by one goal(despite dougals best efforts).
I thought to myself, don't lose tomorrow and we can do this.
Turns out we didn't, goal difference in our favour, they have got to win at the 2nd (arguably) most difficult ground to go to.
And they are as crap as us at winning away.

The David Moyes story in the Sun is farcical beyond belief. It says something like David Moyes is being lined up as Celtic manager but he will turn them down.
There is a sentence about Gordon Strachan maybe leaving if they win or not on Sunday.
The final paragraph says Celtic will make Moyes their top target but he has confided in a friend he would rather stay at Everton.
How this made it to the paper astounds me. Not only is it a nonsense of a story but it is poorly written. Can't expect too much more from that rag.

Paul67,
Again an important and timely article. Do not give up on the issues of Dougal and Bougherra, SFA Chief Executive and Lafferty, the shameless demonisation of linesmen with Irish surnames and the 'peepil'invitation by the Larkhall Masons to serving referees. Regarding the latter it is worth noting that the invitation from the Lodge went out, and was accepted, at a time when Dougal had no intention of retiring before the season's end. In reality he could very well have spoken at Larkhall 2 days before refereeing Rangers at Tannadice.
I notice that the Sun newspaper have attempted today to bring Celtic fans back to the issue of blame and to look inward. Their flyer re Moyes is intended to set the agenda for the phone-ins and manipulate a civil war at Celtic Park on Sunday if things do not work out well for us. It is a ploy which must be resisted from those with influence within the Celtic family. That is why your persistence with today's theme is absolutely vital.
Burnley78 posted a few days ago that Rangers and their fans had stolen our clothes and moved to claim the underdogs tag for themselves as a means to unite and galvanise. The last two days have gone a long way to redress the situation.
Keep exposing the enemies of Celtic for what they are. Then let us go to Celtic Park on Sunday with hope in our hearts and
clarity in our minds.
On to Four.

Don't think they don't read this, not for a second.
They can't help themselves.
What's the point in writing to or e-mailing a journalist in the Scottish media? They'll take one look at it and dismiss you/me/us as an extremist.
I tried it when Keevins wrote about ALLEGED racism when describing a man convicted of racism (Famine Song). The law was broken and proved so, nothing ALLEGED about that anymore. Still waiting on a reply.
This is the place to keep striking that very raw nerve, and they know it.

Philvisreturns, I don't even consider Knickerless to be an ex-Celt any more. He is no more than a moronic, half-witted turncoat.
Mort, ( @ 2009 1:03 PM )
the whole lafferty/bougerra issue really angers me.
On the subject i would like to ask, where was rangers "dignity" "pride" and "values" whe kevin thompson dived against us.
its blatent that this is to make rangers look as if they have standards and deserve to be rewarded for they're honesty by reducing the red card to a yellow so one of they're key players can play in what is arguably the mosty important match they have played or will play for quite a few years.
somebody with influence has to address this, rangers are intitled to apeal whatever they like. however, they cannot be allowed to influence the outcome of these issues. It was the same last year with the league extension. It goes beyond an appeal, and becomes a public debate and a witch hunt against thoese who are fair minded enough to appose the issue.
You have quite rightly commented on "bringing the game into disrepute" however the bigger issue here is the fact that rangers are doing this on a large scale when they're backs against the wall.
It must stop
We MUST BELIEVE!!!
philvisreturns 1.00pm
Aye, The Bunnet would not be taking this lightly, thats for sure.
To have a man with the debating skills and clout (literally) of Dr Reid on the board, I feel a wee bit let down by the silence from CP on this one.

I've no idea what the result will be at tannadice but I don't believe Rangers will be allowed NOT to win.
Levein's rage from last season and his words that 'Rangers were never going to be allowed to lose' are etched in my memory. Does he think things have honestly changed for him and his team....do we?
Dundee Utd will need to play an exceptionally clean and clinical game just to get the point they need and no matter what we do at Parkhead I can't see Rangers not using every dirty trick in the book to get the points. They did last week and are seen to be flaunting their resources all the way through scottish football to influence the outcome.
My brain hurts looking back last week and the inability of us to score a single goal and fear that was our ultimate undoing. Sick as a dog dropping yet more valuable points!
I sincerely hope we do get the results we need but lets face it if the positions were reversed and we were 2 points ahead and 1 win away from the championship we'd fancy our chances.
One thing I've learned in life when pinning all your hopes on a singular outcome is to expect the worst then you can only be surprised and that's how I feel about this weekend.
We blew our big chance last sunday and will need to face the consequences accordingly....the fat lady is clearing her throat but has yet to let us hear what song she's singing! I hope it's the Celtic song :-)

Or when Boyd dived against Dundee United. It starts after about 10 secs.
Those dives were the reason Gordon Smith was very quiet on the whole simulation issue, that he campaigned for vociferously as soon as got the job.
If there wasn't such a good camera angle of Lafferty being "pole-axed" I doubt we would have heard a peep from him or his dignified friends.

I'm trying to avoid 'getting in the mood for it'. Trying to keep low-key, not expect much. I feel like I did the lion's share of my 'grieving' last weekend.
I'm not even sure we'll win. You wonder where a goal might come from. A punt on a one nil home victory with one of the centre-backs getting a set-piece header seems like a good one.
On the other side of the coin tho, even if the other lot do go one up they're up against a Dundee United with a bit of flair who will at least try to win.
The more I think about Hibs' performance last weekend the angrier I get. I wrote this to try and get it out the system - http://forthewaywelivetoday.blogspot.com/2009/05/defenders-of-hibernian-part-2.html. Didn't work.
Cheers lads, defeat or failure lets treat these two impostors just the same...
Just to alleviate any doubt... I'm with ths Gordon Strachan doubting camp....
BUT I like every other doubter (I suspect) would give my right hand (and I'm right handed!) for celtic to win the League on Sunday even if Mr Strachan stays in charge as a result.
This League is a potential turning point.
When was the last time we won when we were not in poll position on the final day? This would quite simply completely remove the bitter memories of Martin's final failure.
Please let us win!

WG - ref James Connolly, ken? He was indeed a Burgher of Edina but as far as I know had no sporting allegiances. My grandparents lived on the same street as the Connollys in twe Cowgate, well Blackie actually but my Dad and my uncles, all of whom like Connolly were St Pat's boys, had a dual allegiance to Hibs and to St Bernard's. My dad reckons this was not uncommon in those days.
The area around the Coogait was an Irish ghetto made up mostly of families like my own who fled the Hunger in the mid-18th century. It was a hotbed of socialism and republicanism and I have some cracking stories of my firebrand nana and what she got up to on July 12!
Not checked this one out with my dad yet but St Bernards apparently had the original 'holy goalie' - a chap who played between the sticks for them but went on to become the moderator of the Church of Scotland!

Sunday is effectively our Cup Final for the season, but with the dice weighted in our favour.
Consider this:
In a straight Cup Final between Celtic, Celtic would only win it if they won and Rangers lost. There could be no scenario with either team drawing the match.
On Sunday, if Celtic win and Rangers lose or draw, Celtic will be Champions.
Celtic have won their last five home games, scoring 19 goals and conceding just 1, so why should we expect anything other than a straighforward win at home to Hearts? Then in two of the three possible outcomes from the Rangers game (a draw or a Dundee Utd home win) Celtic will be Champions. And Rangers have won on just 1 of their last 9 visits to Tannadice...
It is of course true that the title is Rangers' to throw away. But after Celtic lost 0-1 at home to Motherwell last season to leave Rangers leading the SPL 6 points with two games in hand, and Celtic having just 7 games remaining, the SPL title was Rangers' to throw away... and from that position it was a lot harder to throw away than where they are now. Yet they managed it.
They CAN do so again, and I believe they will.
BELIEVE!

The manager was walter smith.....it was last season.....and the reason he said nothing was , there was no benefit to Rangers to him saying anything
Gordon Smith naturally said nothing, he never ever condems Rangers.....not for cheating, not for racism, not for sectarianism, not for their fans rioting and shaming the SFA
and why is this....is he a bigot ?....is he himself a racist ?
probably not in either case, so the question is why doesn't he speak up...he's not slow to open his mouth on a myriad of other subjects
the only conclusion that logically be be drawn, is that he is prejudice and lacks moral compass
when you add his economic and business incompetence, the decision to appoint him CEO of the SFA is and continues to be a scandal

You are right
'score the first goal of the afternoon in Scotland, and then see who have the nerve for the battle.'
The most effective way for our game to have an influence on the Dundee United game is for us to score as early as possible, come out looking to be Champions from the first minute.
An early goal and get the mob up in Dundee as nervous as they were when Crimewatch was on, hopefully those nerves will transmit to the park and the bottle merchants and referee loose concentration.
Three early goals and I will run to Dundee to tell them the score.
We know what we need to do.

Pj,
Some good points well made. While we obviously need to look after our own game on Sunday, there are some differences for the Foe Malign to contend with: first, they're not playing at Ibrox, which is important in my view. Assuming we win, nothing less than a win in Dundee is good enough for them.
Secondly, the Tic will be up 100% up for the game of Sunday (if they're not, then all is lost, anyway).
So, we're right to expect the worse, but hope for the best.
As for the odds not being great ... if you hope for the best you might also be interested in a (widely available) price of 5/2 against Celtic lifting the title: if we lose, you're not going to be noticeably more miserable for having lost a tenner; if we win, you can buy the first round at the bar!

SACK GORDON!
As a Scot Im thoroughly disgusted by how the game is run in Scotland,I have absolutely no confidence in the abilities of the decision makers and especially that of Gordon Smith,he was never qualified in the first place and continually finds himself making public announcements which are damage limitation excercises for not only his administration but also for one club in particular, this is not the sign of a well run and healthy concern such as the professional football game in Scotland.
Since Gordon Smith's appointment my passion for the national side has waned significantly and for a Scot living in England, that is saying something. It is also alarming that the fans of another SPL club, fans which support the club whom have a hatred of my own supported club, have also expressed,on many occasions, their contempt and non confidence in not only the national administration, the national team but also incredibly, the national teams fanbase,so my feelings cannot be described as agenda driven.
Gordon Smith must be sacked and the representation in the governing body of the game in Scotland needs to be radically overhauled in order to ensure fairness and to restore the confidence back to not just Scotland fans but also the fans of all its member clubs.
SACK GORDON!

Celtic fan signs up on a Rangers forum, makes a couple of posts and no-one is any the wiser he's a Celtic fan.
Then he makes a thread saying
Quote:
If you want tickets for next week's title decider away to Dundee United, read here...
Since the away allocation for Rangers fans of 5000 is long sold out.
Tickets
for the home end is the only solution.
But as we all know, if your not on Dundee United's official club/supporter database then you won't even be able to buy tickets for the home end.
Here's what to do..
Phone up the club shop. And ask to buy a pair of Dundee United kit socks. Don't even mention tickets for Sunday or they will become suspicious. Then when they take your sock order, personal details and process your payment your details will then be stored on their system.
Give it a few hours until there's a shift change, phone up again and order your home tickets for the Rangers match and beacuse of your sock order,
you will be on their system and you will get your match tickets. It's perfect lads.
Turns out, there's no such database and all these Rangers fans have ended up with hundreds of pairs of Dundee United socks and no match tickets.

Well, sure won't, 60,000 & i'll be in there.
My personal thoughts & views have been all over the place this year. Some of the football has been bland at times,.. and i did consider not renewing my season ticket. The deed is done, my seat & i won't be getting a divorce. See there are times in a relationship when you just have to go through the motions, there are bad times, good times, ok times. Then there are times when the earth moves,.. & sunday promises to be that. I just hope nobody catches me arguing with my seat over who's doing the dishes!!
Whatever thre outcome on sunday i've convinced myself on this so i'll try & sell it,..
We win the league, great! we tried our best with what we had, players/funds availible.
Rangers finish 2nd, and do,... somehow,... fluke in to the champions league groups. They get some money which evaporates as soon as it hits the bank,.. They are still in trouble lets no forget that.
Can't write this,.. but the good Lord forbid,.. they,.. they,.. they,.. You know!
well we'll just have to spend on quality, we get an improved product on the park to get us into the champions league group stage, happy days!!
And one last thing,.. everyone knows they're cheating their way through this, just like last time.
So what if they get a cup!
They'll still be skint and we have our heads held high, and when its rubbed in as people have have tried on me i just point out the obvious and the slow realisation coupled with the support of other non Celtic or rangers fans removes the gunpowder from their smug bullets!!
Living the dream,.... I'll never walk alone.

Yes well I'm not getting my hopes up as I've found in football, especially when talking about our rivals, when you most expect something it never happens.
All we can do is beat Hearts and hope for the best.
Whoever the Captain is on Saturday I hope they live up to it as I think since Lennon hung up his boots we've missed a leader on the pitch.

All this talk of food is making me hungry. Glad I didn't have the fortitude or generosity to go on a diet for Kano.
Hope all is well with the diet, the expanding family and life in Murcia.
Not for the first time, a Scottish referee has made a peculiar decision in murky circumstances that favours The Establishment Club. Thank God that sites like this exist, for us to try & fathom/discuss exactly what we are up against on an annual basis
The Establishment Club, The Governing Body of the game, The Head of The Players Union & The Scottish Tabloid Media's reaction to Dougals decision sounds like a generic press release from the one organisation? Co-incidentally the focus has somehow switched from the blatant cheating of a Rangers Player to testimonials confirming the integrity of Stuart Dougal & then swiftly onto loaded comments inferring Celtic Paranoia. Ideal preperation for winning a League eh?
Fundamentally all i ask is that Celtic can compete in an environment with transparency & fairness, regardless of whether we win lose or draw. That Celtic Football Club do not challenge the paramaters & botched rules of the SFA on an executive level is a disgrace & a slap in the face to the support
Anyway Lets stick together & just win this league on Sunday

Breaking News:
Rueters:
The SPL have announced that dues to the number of Rangers fans who have purchased tickets for the home supporters' sections on Sunday, their game is being moved to Ibrox. A spokesperson for the SPL said: "Given the incredible demand for tickets for the match this was the only sensible option open to us. After all, Ibrox has a capacity of 51,000 while Tannadice only accommodates 14,000. And we will be doing our bit for the environment too, by removing the need to use a highly polluting helicopter to deliver the trophy at the end of the game."
Ends.
That's why we're paranoid.

last year going into the final days fixtures all the talk was of how many goals the huns were going to score to enable them to win the league on goal difference, in fact billy dodds and the likes thought Celtic would not even win at United so it wasn't important how many they would get.I listened to them talk of 5 and 6 nil score lines.

You mean the Celtic-tartan one?
The opposition in Edinburgh a few years ago to the proposal to name one of the Meadows walks after its famous son, James Connolly, tells you all you need to know about Scotland. It also puts to bed this myth that sectarianism is a west coast issue.
Just in case anyone is in dangers of withdrawal symptoms from the football I notice a major cup final in the offing next week at Tynecastle.
St Aloysius College (the only catholic independent school in Scotland) travel to the east to take on Geroge Watsons College in the Scottish Schools Cup Final.
Ironically St Aloysius has won the Scottish Rugby Cup on 5 occassions and are playing the best Rugby playing School in Scotland who have never won the Rugby Cup in this soccer final. In my day at St Aloysius they would never have allowed us to have a football team, how times have changed.....and good to see them progress to the final for the 2nd year in a row.
Not sure who the ref is, or what post match after dinner speaking engagements he has, but there is sure to be the usual rivalry between the teams from differing backgrounds. I notice the venue is literally a stones throw from the Watsons school, but i am not suggesting any bias at all !
The game is on Thursday night at Tynecastle.

DD,
You are absolutely right to focus on what we need to do at home against the jambos but I'm taking solace in the fact that with the huns there are seeds of doubt in their mind that could help us, namely :
- Their poor recent record at Tannadice ;
- The DUFC manager seems to have the indian sign on them ;
- The fact that DUFC have everything to play for (centenary, European footie, grievances, full hoose, etc)
- Their relatively ropey away form in the league ;
- Their inability to win the 'must win' games ;
- Their inability to seize any initiative from our poor performances ;
- The sheer presssure on them of NOT winning the league financially. Some are playing for their livelihoods.
They may do it but have we considered the enormous amount of pressure on them to deliver and find something from their mettle / performance / cojones that they've failed to demonstrate to date.
DUFC stick to their gameplan, frustrate and create chances to win coupled with us hitting the onion bag early doors. I can truly see us do this.

I have asked a couple of people to act as Moderator of the comments section. Moderators will act on their own judgement and delete comments which contravene the guidelines without leaving an explanatory comment. I will continue to leave a note if I delete something.
Comments are welcome so long as they are not libellous or defamatory, or contain views of a racial, religious or other perceived prejudice. They should also not contain language inappropriate for children to read, personal attacks or links to illegal content. The About page will shortly be updated to reflect this.
Note the “personal attacks” reference, which is new. This has not been a big issue for the blog but has been tested by one or two individuals (perhaps only one) and is the type of nonsense that can destroy a healthy online community.
Contrary, absurd and downright irrelevant views will, of course, continue to be welcome.

The Battered Bunnet. Once again, that odious little man McGuire/Martin sits at his laptop and writes utter pish. The only thing of any value in this article is the advice that Dougal should have gone along time ago. I agree with Martin/McGuire on this point but my reasons are different from his. I think Dougal was an incompetent referee just as I think Martin/McGuire is a poor excuse for a journalist. He should take his own advice and chuck it. McGuire/Martin makes the same mistakes as his colleagues who promote every incompetent referee to “Scotland's No.1 official”. How many No1 officials can Scotland have at the same time?

Notes from the Underground
...A conspiracy theory is a term that has come to refer to any tentative theory which explains a historical or current event as the result of a secret plot by usually powerful Machiavellian conspirators, such as a "secret team" or "shadow government".
... The term is therefore often used dismissively in an attempt to characterize a belief as outlandishly false and held by a person judged to be a crank or a group confined to the lunatic fringe. Such characterization is often the subject of dispute due to its possible unfairness and inaccuracy...
Fine, good - I get all that.
Where I'm stuck is...
Are we the conspiracy theorists?
Or is this a conspiracy theory of his own making? About us being a 'secret team' of conspiracy theorists?
...?
Uly
For the last time, there was nothing whatsoever to read into Mr Dougal agreeing to speak at an ecumenical charitable dinner at a Masonic lodge in Larkhall one week after helping Rangers cheat their way into an advantageous position last Saturday.
It was just a series of coincidences.
By Burnley'78 on May 21, 2009 12:50 PM
Yup the implications of our failing to win the title will be a lot less disasterous for us than it will be for them.
If we assume straight qualification into the CL means £15m to the winners and finishing bottom of the group - a fate likely for whoever wins the SPL title - means no further European money then the £15M will be very welcome to Lloyds if Rangers get it. It will not go on team strengthening. It will go to pay the gamble SDM took in signing Mendez, Davis, Lafferty and Miller and reducing their debt. Reducing it not removing it.
Their highest earner is already on his way and if £15K a week is to be their ceiling ( Iheard it mentioned on Clyde) well that does not buy any quality at today's prices (although I think they might fall).
The whole point about the importance of taking part in the CL was that the income could be used to give the Scottish participant greater financial advantage over their main rivals. However that will apply this year whether Celtic win the title or not.
Its just that instead of having an extra £15M to play with we will only have whatever we get from the qualifying matches and the Europa Cup for we have no dent to repay.
Lets call it £5M. Add to that getting Balde off the wage bill and other deadwood and Celtic are still much the stronger in finacial terms (how we use that strength is of course another matter but it will still exist.)Finally we could still get £6M for Boruc if we decided that his money was needed to strengthen other positions.
So whilst the media might carry on with its misleading headline game of highlighting the amount, if it continues to cloud their support on what it means in real terms, then power to their elbow.
How we benefit from our position of solidity and strengthen is of course the debate for the close season, but it is one in which the Celtic support will be able to indulge (even if we are a few million short if we are SPL runners up) in and one the Rangers support will be denied unless they are bought over.

Samaras is an absolute idiot. We want them to be nervous before the big game on Sunday not motivated by moronic outbursts like this. Why not come out with something like "Rangers can only throw it away now." or "Remember Celtic's late slip at Fir Park in 2005. Anything can happen."
He is now going to be pinned up on the dressing room wall at Tannadice and provide an extra spur to the Rangers players. If they don't deserve to win the league why didn't you prove that last Sunday instead of blazing a free header over the bar from 6 yards?

Whitedoghunch....Penny has dropped.
Heard you got a new job. when do you start?
On Samaras - of course it will be down to our mistakes if they win it, but we are the ones who need them to drop points in order to win the league. It's always about mistakes the other team makes, otherwise we'd end the season level on points, goal difference and goals scored. And then whoever wins the play-off would only win because of the other team's mistakes. If nobody made a mistake then nobody would be able to score a goal. He should probably start thinking before he speaks, I recently did so and it's been working brilliantly.

Stuart Dougal.
There must be a judgement vacuum of some sort in his head these days. Why on earth would he believe it perfectly acceptable for an SPL referee to guest at a Masonic Lodge sportman's dinner in Larkhall in the last week of the SPL season following on from controversial games involving Celtic and Rangers in a neck and neck title race? Talk about the need to be impartial and be seen to be impartial?
To make matters worse, in his penultimate game of the season (invloving Celtic) he didn't see something a Celtic player apparently did that he later seen and decided he should have taken action at the time having seen it and has referred it to the review panel.
Then he sees something in the Rangers game (his final game) which didn't actually happen and acts upon what he didn't see by sending Mulgrew off for something he didn't actually do, disadvantaging Aberdeen for 73 minutes of a critical match. Having seen it again later he accepts that what he seen didn't actually happen at all and decides to refer it to the review panel.
Furthermore, he didn't see something else in the Rangers game but acts upon his linesman's advice who did see something and sends off Bougherra for a dangerous challenge. Having seen it again later (well, actually, for the first time as he didn't see it initially) he decides that what the linesman said he seen he believes he didn't actually see, despite the linesman confirming that he did see what he seen and still believes he seen what he seen, and decides to refer it to the review panel.
So, there you have it. If only he had referred his invite to the Masonic Lodge at Larkhall to the review panel he wouldn't be in the muddle he now finds himself in. He hasn't got much right these past couple of weeks.
Blaming everyone for everything except himself. Who missed two things that happened, seen one thing that didn't happen, disagreed with his linesman over something that did happen but he thinks didn't happen and reverses another decision he failed to judge correctly at the first time of asking?
Yip, Stuart, it's you. At some point somebody has to acknowledge errors of judgement and stop blaming others.
He was a decent ref (helmet on) but this last few days of his SPL career has been a bit of a fiasco.
I'm with you Token - although I did go a bit wild once with a pair of 'Franz Beckenbauer's' with yellow stripes.

your optimism (and that of many on cqn) is laudable but misplaced.
football fans excel in blind faith but it is usually counter-productive.
The feeling of optimism when Billy signed Martin Hayes, Charlie Nich + john collins one summer the near hysteria after the joe miller treble busting cup final all lead to false dawns and misplaced faith in leaders who have already let us down.
WE HAVE ALREADY BLOWN IT!
Or more accurately our board has blown it, our chief executive has blown it, and our manager has blown it.
The financial lifeline this has thrown to the busted flush that is rangers fc makes me want to cry.
Our chief exec's astonishing misjudgement at the last transfer window and failure to secure a left back in the last 6 transfer windows coupled with his mismanagement of the Bobo debacle needs some serious answers.
The silence over the presidency of Gordon Smith has also been a failure of leadership.

I do not disagree with a lot of what you say but I don't think it is indulging in blind faith to hope for us to win at home and for them to fail to win at Tannadice.
Everyone who is expressing a feeling that we might win this league is doing so with their eyes wide open. If we were 11 points behind with 4 games left, it would be blind faith to still expect to come out on top.
And,yes, we may have already blown it but that can be countered by Rangers doing the very same thing.

Why would you want an alternative to Ch67 for watching the gamein Japan? I'm not taking the moral high ground, I have watched games via a feed when I've no other way of accessing them, but doing so when abroad (and thus able to access Ch67) is the same as wearing a knock-off shirt. Worse in fact, because the % of income to the club from Ch67 is much higher than from the typical shirt sale.

How can anything said by Samaras, or anyone at Celtic for that matter, motivate Rangers on Sunday? Is it even conceivable that they are less than 100% motivated already?
I suppose there's always the mythical extra 10% that footballers talk about....
Samaras is totally correct.
Just didnt need to give them the story and you should only give out stories like that when you are on form.
Yes We Can.
Samaras was stupid saying what he did.....we're much better piling on the pressure by agreeing with Big Feck and by saying things
like 'rangers are now the favourites'.....'surely they won't throw it away now'.....'rangers need this title financially'...'we can only win our game and hope for the best'....'there might be a few twists and turns yet' and other phrases of that ilk.
I hope someone has a word with the players and gets them on message as Samaras comes across like Kevin Keegan at Newcastle.
Another thing big Sami has hardly managed to set the heather alight with his goals and performances....especially of late

NeilR - we want RFC players to be reflecting on the task on Sunday, allowing a little fear of failure to creep in.
Georgios'comments just made it a little easier for them to focus on winning.
Bob Paisley used to use the expression 'bung 'em a bit of toffee' when he praised Liverpool's opponents ahead of big games.
Never give them anything to bite on.
Never played against someone - sure that you were trying your hardest and then something happens (an insulting comment, a foul not given) and you find a little extra edge?

it was the linesman who changed his mind after reviewing the incident
It wasnt the first tackle but the second 3 seconds later that was the reason for the red card but because of the angle of the tv cameras that nobody seen it

I think these sort of arguments have a bit more force if you're directly up against the person/team in question. If anyone from Rangers even notices Samaras's comments, they are already failing to focus properly. Which would be great.
We'll never know if it makes any difference this time, I just don't think it's a big deal. Forget about this Giorgio Samaras quote the meedja are blowing out of proportion....
This doesn't give them any motivation whatsoever in comparison to the motivation they should already have to win the title for the first time in 4 years and to prevent horrendous consequences for their club and themselves as players.
If they are reliant on being motivated by a throw away line in a press conference from an opposition player then the title will be ours without a shadow of a doubt.
If I thought our players needed Boydichenko to say something to get us motivated I would them punted and the manager with them. That's his job to make sure the motivation and hunger is already there.

Anyway more weirdly still, on comes erstwhile Pierrot, Leo Sayer with One Man Band, a no bad but ironically really rather orchestrated wee tune.

Like last year, they were seven points clear and we won the title and I said that we were the better team," he said.
"Now it's the opposite. But, if they are going to win it, I don't think they deserve it. I think we are better.
"If they are going to win it then fair play - but it's our mistakes (that let them) and I think we are a better team than Rangers."
Rangers surrendered a seven-point lead last season to allow their Old Firm rivals to come from behind to win their third consecutive title

WGS, today I put on my common house-fly suit and flew all the way to Lennoxtown for the presser...I had to content myself with a place on the wall as there were no sandwiches on the table...and so, in came wee Gordon but he said nothing controversial...he knows what they are after and the journos were not happy...then in came big Sammi...at first he wouldn't take the journos' bait, he wanted to talk only of Celtic... until Ronnie Esplin asked him, if rangers won it would he concede the huns were the better team and deserved it...the rest you know but the lazy js were almost giving high fives when Sammi left the room. Here's hoping!
If you like to have a bet I think the two title deciding games are the choice,Both games will be tight affairs, each team affraid to let in a goal,so I would suggest Draws at half/time and the team of your choice to win at full-time,it will show a fair profit if it comes up.I calculated Celtic & Dundee united as the winning bets, and for a fiver stake the returns come to £325,I never calculated the other two as no-one would be interested?.
Mcgraininspain,
as you may know, I am now living in the land down under and am a naturalised Aussie. I haven't been able to post for a while since I've been touring for months. A really embarrassing thing happened a few months back when I left my 'puter on and one of my roadies posted as me in real Aussie vernacular some of which proved to be quite offensive to some! As if I could have learned all of those expressions in such a short space of time. Anyone who knows me knows I couldn't even begin to act in such a confident, manly way around the ladies. Mum says it's because I am such a gentle, sensitive soul.(she wasn't too pleased to see what that roadie posted and she gave him a real talking to)
Anyway,it was my birthday yesterday (61...gosh!)and I would love to have a belated birthday present on Saturday when the Celtics line up against the "Jam Sandwiches" as is their nicknames (or jam pieces as you might say).
I am fully confident that the Celtics will secure all 4 points and Dundee City will do what they need to do to secure their place in the Eurovision Cup.
Hail, hail, hail
PS glad you got the Pierrot reference. We thought at the time we had gone too subtle.
Whether it would make any difference... but the club could do with employing a PR person to brief the foreign players in particular before these press conferences. They have to understand that any such noises are going to be blasted from a loudhailer with maximum negative spin employed by the Laptop Loyal.
Mind you if he'd said 'it's a tough ask' or something like that no doubt the cry would be 'sammy doesn't rate celtic's chances'
Ratbag was spouting about how TFOD were going to win the league in the Retard PM (free edition) yesterday. Why is this not seen as disgraceful boasting? I'm a sucker rhetorical questions.

3 days, 3 articles on masons, referees and conspiracies.
This feels to me like a less well balanced and objective perspective on all things Celtic and scottish football that is the norm for CQN.
Maybe its an attempt to drum up a bit of siege mentality for the battle ahead ?
In my opinion, nothing other than footballing mismanagement and poor player performances have influenced our season.
This Sunday is no different, if we lose the league (and that is what it is, it is certainly not Rangers winning it) then it is nothing to do with masons, referees or the SPL.
The problem is poor footballing management. This still applies if we win.
Rant over, bring it on for Sunday and mon the hoops !!!

Locked In
Reporter: Andrea Burns
Up until 5 months ago, Martin Kane was a fit healthy man then overnight his world changed. Martin woke in the early hours feeling strange. In the time it took his wife Carolyn to call an ambulance, Martin had lost feeling in his legs and then he couldn't move at all. He was trapped. Locked in.
Director of the Spinal Unit at Perth's Royal Perth Hospital, John Ker says Martin's condition is called Devic's syndrome. A rare incurable form of Multiple Sclerosis.
Unable to speak, Martin can only mouth words. He uses a computer to help spell out his words. It's slow and frustrating, but it's a start. Martin needs round the clock help, but even the medical staff agree that he doesn't need to be in hospital.
The manager of Martin's beloved Celtic football club Gordon Strachan was just one of the people across the world who've heard Martin's story and if good wishes could make the difference, Martin would be walking through his front door tonight, but wishes aren't enough. This proud family needs financial help.
The home Martin spent years renovating for cosmetic reasons, now needs practical changes to facilitate a wheelchair. Friends, family, even kind strangers have already helped make some changes to facilitate Martin coming home such as a path to get him in the front door. Carolyn wants her husband home with their kids. It's not the future they'd planned but she's determined they'll be together.
"We can still have a fulfilling life. Martin might be able to study, he might be able to return to work, there might be advances in technology where he can actually speak again, move again, who knows? I just keep hopeful for anything" says his loving wife Carolyn.
If you would like to help Martin and his family, please email the team here at Today Tonight your name and contact number and we'll pass it onto the family. tt@7perth.com.au

I am not without hope but I fear it is the puffed up artificial kind.
I knew coming onto the Blog at this point in the week there would be lashings of opTIMisim, shouts of "BELIEVE" and lots of question marks about THEIR bottle & record at Tannadice.
All well and good and indeed I was encouraged until I put myself in the position of a DU supporter - how would I regard our record in must win games?
"Couldn't win the L Cup last term to a R~~~~~~$ team marginally worse than this term.
Couldn't push ourselves over the line for one of our own (Eddie Thompson RIP).
This season although clearly the third best side in the division, the closer we got to actually finishing third the weaker our form.
Now we need a point to secure Europe - I can hear the glass begining to crack.
In this regard the Celtic club are everything we're not. Sorry Celts would love to help but I know us better than you!"

I expect us to win on Sunday, though with this team the odds against creating early and then keeping a two goal lead are low, so it's likely to be a nervy day.
Tannadice: if Dundee Utd had nothing to play for beyond pride I'd expect Rangers to edge it. For as long as they need something from the game, I make them favourites to get it. Here's hoping Aberdeen get their noses in front early in their game; we and Ragners won't be the only ones with trannies to our ears.

A MAY MIRACLE
The setting was a summers night on the twenty first of May
With Celtic & Rangers locked in fight to see who had the day
And the say was the biggest yet perhaps between the two
No Hollywood could have cast the set, for this was uniquely new
The Premier League was the prize, no paltry shield or cup
The winter's chaos to League ties had held this game up
So nature played a great role in the way the set was made
For without the effect of the North Pole, the game would have been played
Yes, the team that won this game would win the league as well
They would gain all the acclaim their support would blithely tell
I said the team that won the game though that is not quite true
'Cause if the Celts won, the League was theirs, but Rangers won it if they drew
So Celts started behind that day and things soon looked very black
For although they had most of the play, Rangers scored in one attack
With over an hour to play, one down, a draw no use
The League looked lost, and at half-time, we heard all the old abuse
Hopes had turned to deepest doubt, though the team never gave up
We'd still a chance in a cup tie, but this was for no cup
Each attempt the Celtic made, a bar or post would foil
And just on the hour, after a raid, they lost wee Johnny Doyle
He had looked the man most likely, he'd near things once or twice
But his temper passed his effort, ordering off was the price
As he made his way to the tunnel, we wondered if and how and when?
If eleven couldn't do it in an hour, in half an hour how could ten?
The Gers felt certain, naw, absolutely sure, the game was as good as theirs
The Celts support was very sick, now they'd only prayers
But then their prayers were answered, as they pressed goal-makin
And beyond belief, within a while, they scored through big Roy Aitken
Then amidst the most dramatic scenes that I have ever seen
McCluskey put them one in front, the ten men in the green
We really couldn't believe it, oh! how we would preach
But all all within a minutes space, Rangers made it two each
By this time we knew we'd watched the best game of the season
And to expect more goals or thrills we really had no reason
The ten had fought a great, great fight, plain for all to see
So words could not express delight when the ten men made it three
It was now three two with minutes left, the game was still a bristle
And without a qualm of conscience we prayed for the final whistle
But before it came with its welcome piercing the May night cloud
The score was four for the ten through wee Murdo MacLeod
Then there were scenes to remember which keep come smiling through
For the ten men had done it,actually won it, and the scoreline was 4-2
There was such an awful clamour, such excitement such din and such noise
That myself and the people with me for four days lost our voice
Everything in reflection is pleasing even the trainer waving referee
To the half-time worry and doubting and the game blacked by TV
The mind flies back for a marker, to Lisbon and the 7-1 game
But none of them compares in any way quite the same
The Lisbon Lions had quality, just recall the jinkin' Merlin
The 7-1 team had Charlie T and Billy McPhail, a darlin'
But this team they were hardly known, some barely a season there
The month before Rangers opened the score and beat them fair and square
And some that saw will wonder, will always recall this great game
Knowing full well its unlikely we'll ever see the same
The recent internationals were one great yawn and bore
Even the game in Norway where Scotland won by four
The future games will matter, they'll be played as keenly as ever
But after that memorable night, they'll hardly make us quiver
And when football people gather for all to have their say
I'll be happy to bore them again and again of that summer night in May
Sometimes, when I think back, questions rise if and how and when?
If eleven couldn't do it in one hour, in half an hour how could ten?
Ther is no answer, theres seems no way, not even now today
But it happened and I saw it on that summer's night in May.
Paul

Kirk Broadfoot's foot injury happened in his kitchen. He was following the intructions on a packet of rice. Everything was going well until he got to the bit that said 'stand in boling water for 10 minutes'
notthebus
Is the day trip to Millport still on?
I’ve been thinking a bit recently about the whole subject of refereeing bias, actual or perceived. The Dougal episode has certainly brought it to the fore with Celtic fans. Interestingly, on my occasional forays into the clammy depths of FF, the conviction of bias against their club seems to be almost as deep-rooted as it is on the Celtic side.
If refereeing decisions are not impartial, that should be clear enough in a world where everything is on YouTube. It isn't, though, and I think the reason for this is that we all participate in an briefly satisfying but ultimately futile blame game, based on anecdotal evidence.
For as long as that’s where it stops, NOTHING will ever happen. The proliferation of controversial moments in football mean that there will always be lots of ammunition for someone alleging bias in any direction. Only a dispassionate analysis of facts will ever demonstrate whether there's really a case to be answered.
If people are really interested in finding out whether bias is present in the system, I think it should be relatively easy to create a database of relevant and objective data about refereeing performance.
People have occasionally done some interesting work in this area before now; there was a thread on CQN some months ago (maybe more) based on some very compelling research about penalties awarded in seasons past.
Historical work can certainly be useful, but the necessary use of partial data makes it difficult to build a compelling case.
I therefore think one of the best things that could be done to promote the transparency and objectivity we all profess to want would be to start building a database based on contemporary information. I propose to start such a database, available for public scrutiny, from the start of next season, using sources such as the live statistics for each SPL match on Sporting Life, which give a great deal of relevant information in a convenient, easy-to-extract format. Historical information could perhaps be added in due course.
Here is a list of relationships that could potentially indicate whether teams are being treated equally – or not.
* Number of penalties awarded compared to number of goals scored.
* Number of penalties conceded compared to number of goals conceded.
* Number of offsides given compared to goals scored.
* Number of offsides given against opponents compared to goals conceded.
* Minutes of 2nd half added time in each match and the result at 90 minutes.
* Number of yellow/red cards compared to number of fouls conceded.
* Number of yellow/red cards against opponents compared to fouls committed.
* Results for a club when a given referee is officiating, compared to the average.
There are obvious pitfalls in doing this, at least in the short term. While some of these relationships are fairly simple to interpret, others (e.g. the last one) are much less so. There would be a lot of 'noise' in the results, and no doubt people would extrapolate the results beyond their statistical significance to begin with.
On the other hand, the facts would be there for analysis, it would only take a couple of seasons for most of the results to acquire a reasonable degree of statistical significance.
This should be welcomed by the authorities (though it won’t). If, as we should at least be willing to admit as a hypothesis, the refereeing fraternity really is largely free from bias, the statistics will show that more clearly than any number of official statements.
We're not talking about a huge amount of info to be collated; for each match the following is all that would be needed to work out all the relationships mentioned above:
Teams
Score at 90 mins
Result
2nd half added time
Offsides
No of yellow cards
No of red cards
No of free kicks
No of penalties
Referee
30 mins a week inputting SPL data from Sporting Life onto a Google Docs spreadsheet would do it. I’m quite happy to set it up, but I know for a fact I’m too lazy to see it through on my own! Is anyone else interested in helping out with a bit of data entry?
Any suggestions on other (readily gathered and objectively verifiable) data that could help throw further light on this subject are also welcome.
Anyone interested can shout out on CQN or e-mail me via my user name at neilrobertson dot com. I’ll be going out for a few hours so won’t be replying immediately to any feedback or comments on here.

I've thought along those lines about collecting stats. Fouls awarded would be another one.
I always feel we get penalties when we don't really need them like in a 5-0 win. They get them when they are really under pressure. This wouldn't register on your system.
As you say it would be a fair bit of work but a good idea.
NeilR - as you are no doubt aware there are a myriad of complexities other than simple statistics, although the bare statistics may present enough of a picture. Context is important also.
i.e. Rearrangers get a Davis-esque penalty against the Diet Huns which hands them a 2-1 win and 2 points whilst Celtic get a penalty whilst 3-0 up to St.Mirren. There is a big difference between the two however the stats would read penalties tally = Rearrangers 1 Celtic 1 = no bias at play.
TheBhoyWithTheWaferThinEyes
Sadly the independent commercial evaluation of the 2 clubs is likely to suggest that for the most recent period (usually last 3 years) Rangers value returned to sponsor would be greater than Celtic's.
This is mainly due to their 2 successful UEFA seasons vs Celtic having CL success in 2 years which is offset by the CL offering no significant branding opportunities for localised activity due to TEAM (UEFA marketing folk) activation of CL sponsor deals.
serious question
Does anyone really think our current situation is due to hun offical bias?
Or is this just a way of venting of steam.
Just interested
My view is that it makes a nice excuse if things don't go our way sunday.
NeilR, great idea. Might you be able to work out the stats for bookings per club for players running off the pitch to celebrate - that's one that really rankles. That would involve watching them on a regular basis, right enough, so probably a no-go.
Been off the site for a week as domestic duties have somewhat overtaken me (whoever said "as slow as a week in Inverness" must have had some idea of the week I've just had in said city which felt like a month). i cn recollect a number of very important decisions that nhave gone the huns way at important times in games
they consistently get pens that no other team would be awarded
also it is not only pro-hun decisions it is the anti-Celtic ones
all the snyde free kicks given against us ..denied free kicks and pens ...in our last 2 away games we have had shout for pens that imo the huns would have got ..of course we didn`t
overall they have a bearing on the season
however this year the MIB meddling should not have matter as we should have been to far ahead for them to have had an influence

PS if we win the SPL on Sunday and so qualify for the pre season Malaga tournament this is the place to go and stay.
Just so annoyed that we are not out of sight.
I believe P. Lawell has got extremely complacent and started to believe his own hype. (All that tosh about the Arsenal post)
Im in business myself and one thing above all else that has allowed me to stay reasonably succesful is to stay hungry.
If you let every one else underestimate you and never get complacent you'll do allright. What i've seen with the Tic's ceo is the opposite. And dont think they dont puff themselves up when smart web bloggers like paul67 sing their praises often (and blindly).
By waiting to the end of season to criticise we are in a ''bolting the stable door'' position. Sycophancy does not help the cause.
Im a bit of a malcontent on here for moaning that we underestimate der hun too much and praise our ceo & manager too much. But a bit more of that attitude from on high might've stopped us getting in this outrageous position..............
THAT BEING SAID IVE GOT £100 ON UNITED @ 5/1

Dick Byrne -
been wondering for a while know whether I know you. Is it just Rangers games I tend to see you...?
NeilR - another problem is quantifying 'negative' statistics i.e. when Celtic or the Huns' latest opponents are denied stonewall penalties or McCurry fails to send off Cousin for a blatant head butt. These are subjective judgements although some are of the blatant variety.
e.g. our "escape" when a penalty wasn't give against Dundee Utd early in the season was held up as proof that all these things even out, at least as far as Us and Them are concerned
i.e. FOUR NONSENSE FARCE decisions = ONE DEBATABLE decision - according to the Lapdog Loyal.
Another example was the fury and media scutiny around Zander Diamond's "disallowed" goal against us last season. The Monday after this I was on the end of some rant from an Aberdeen fan who hadn't seen the game to the effect of "don't hit me with yer paranoia rubbish ever again that just proved you lot get everything going from refs". When I politely pointed out that George had a goal disallowed with no explanation and no media scrutiny, the response was a matter of fact "well there must've been absolutely nothing controversial about it then".
The bottom line is people will not believe what they don't want to believe no matter how much evidence you produce. I think this is a very worthwhile idea actually, but the beauty of the Hun propaganda machine in this country is, that the very fact that someone would take the trouble to collate and present data of this type is in itslelf enough to brand you paranoid!
"What?? You went away and recorded things on a spreadsheet. You are totally PARANOID!"
time after time the absence of media scrutiny as far as decisions in favour of the huns allows a mythology to develop such as the laughable notion that the Huns were hard-done by last season in relation to fixture scheduling. In fact references to last season in the Scottish media repeatedly say that Rangers were not granted an extension to the season.
Truly Orwell's vision of a compliant media re-writing history has come to pass.
This really came to the fore with Kenny Misser's "stop maoning Celtic we got nothing last year rant" immediately followed by Nosurname's outburst about the Irishey sounding official. No accusations of being an "extremist" or "parnoid" were levelled at Nosurname, or even any "for gods sake its 2009" type statements in the media. The obvious contradiction that Nosurname's naked attempts to intimidate the match official immediately followed one of his own players telling Celtic to shut up and not be so paranoid, is simply ignored by Murray's poodles. There simply is no contradiction, manipulation or Rearrangers paranoia as far as they are concerned.
The best you will do with a Motherwell/St Mirren/Dundee Utd etc fan when presenting this evidence or argument is a grudging "they're just incompetent not biased".
And no doubt you will be paranoid for going to the trouble of remembering all this and there will be screeds of examples of this kind of favouritism to Celtic that you have simply glossed over yourself.
"Celtic are never out the papers" they will say.
Yeah, tell us about it!

Chaplin, further to auldheid's post, can also vouch for Bailey's Bar in Calle San Miguel, Torremolinos, Inchy's Bar in Benalmadena (not a Celtic pub, but very Celtic-friendly, and worth a visit for a nose around the memorabilia on the wall), and would suggest avoiding The Point, Bar None and The Tartan Arms in Benalmadena like the plague :-)
Here is why I am confident of 4-in-a-row on Sunday.
If Rangers only needed a draw at Tannadice, I think they are one team who could easily achieve that. They are suited to defending a position and United might have found it hard to break them down if they had 10 men behind the ball. It was brutal to watch in the UEFA Cup, but it was effective nonetheless.
However, Ranger know that a draw will not be enough. They must find a win. I can't see them doing that, especially against such a well-organised team like Dundee United; more especially against a Dundee United side who themselves need to avoid defeat to win a Euro spot.
If United get the first goal, Rangers will implode. As long as it is 0-0, the Gers know one goal will do it, but at 0-1, they will need 2.
Paradise would be Celtic ahead 2-0 at half-time while Rangers are trailing 0-1.
Would they be able to handle such a high pressure second half? I'm not sure they could.
Like I say, if they were 3 points ahead and needing a draw, I would be very pessimistic. They need to win.
Hail Hail

I’m glad you copied and pasted that. To me the most encouraging and most concerning sentence is
“Martin needs round the clock help, but even the medical staff agree that he doesn't need to be in hospital.”
Martin must go home. The hospital have had the pleasure of his company for far to long and that clock has ticked its bain beyond even Martin’s endurance; but for him to get home and stay home, a lot of things have to be done and all long term necessary support in place. That long term necessary support is what I would envision us being able to provide towards.
Like many people I took the time to e-mail the tele-jounalist, Andrea Burns, at tt@7perth.com.au a congratulatory note.
I was rather surprised when not five minutes later an e-mail arrived at my works address with here direct number and asking that I contact her. She was very polite and seemed personally committed to helping Martin home. She asked my opinion of how much it would take to see Martin’s ambition of being back with his family realized. I replied Aud. $50,000 and we are well on our way to that figure. She seemed to think that I had underestimated. She must have sensed my despondency because she quickly added that the response to the TV segment had been phenomenal and that all sorts of people had been in touch and were offering to assist in various way. The help that those people will bring to Martin is at the moment unquantifiable, the help that we can bring to Martin is quantifiable. We should commit to that Aus$50,000, achieve it, get Martin home, and then enjoy the fact that we truly do belong to the greatest sporting social family the world has ever known. And we do.
It was at the perseverance and imitative of Martin’s niece (if I remember correctly) that the Today Tonight show carried Martin’s story. Her commitment is typical of Martin's family and friends but her imitative has no copyright. They, by all accounts, showed Martin and his love for his family and his club in a tremendous light. They would likely do a follow up if we can get Martin home. Let’s just do it. Let’s just get him home; home before Christmas too.
Anybody got an e-mail for the commercial or marketing manager of Nike?
On another issue altogether, all week I have seen people do the maths and inflate doom if Rangers actually win the league. 15M pounds and what they could do with it. I just wondered the converse, what if Celtic win the league and they get the 15M and they add the unspent money that was promised to Gordon Strachan and take a wee punt of 5M, I would optimistically, without fear of attracting too much debt beyond our ability to comfortably service the debt,, estimate that wee Gordon could might easily have a war-chest of between twenty to thirty million. Wouldn’t that be nice? Well I thought it was worth a thought anyway.
Dick, your pockets are as full as your heart and all this "he never buys a drink" crap is just that mate, crap. As well you and all the rest know ! So GIRFUYA :o)))

Hi. I have a ticket going spare for Sunday's game. Its for area 445 (ticket says restricted view no discount - i've never sat there so I don't know how rubbish this makes the view). The problem is I'm based in Edinburgh. If anyone would like the ticket and could pick it up in Edinburgh city centre sometime tomorrow they'd be welcome to it for a donation to Kano's fund.
Email me at lynnsgreensocks@googlemail.com if you're interested.
