Eto'o gives Barca reason to ponder

| | Comments (540)
I was really pleased that Samuel Eto'o declined to become the best paid player in Britain by joining Manchester City.  While he is out of contract next year and will be able to leave Barcelona for free, his chances of getting an even richer contract offer are limited; this decision was made for football reasons.

Barcelona appeared keen to move him on.  Today he is worth €30m, money which Barcelona could use to strengthen their team for the future, but the prospect of losing him for nothing a year from now, or offering him a wage competitive with what he is likely to get on the open market, will not appeal.

Even the top club in the world need to manage contract renewals years before they expire.

I am the one and only!

Free the Manchester two!!!

phil
what was the article about? o))

eto is a greedy so and so

Good news to see another quality player turn down the chance to join the circus

Unfortunately, we need strikers *this* year ...

£250,000 a week, not to be sniffed at. where will it all end. crazy money.

Paul67 - I think Mr Eto'o quite fancies the idea of a summer 2010 bidding war and the fat signing on fee that would bring!

Although as you say in your post, I am delighted somebody else has turned Man City down. Something sticks in my craw about these wee teams getitng gobbled up by sugar daddies then buying themselves into success. Thats why I hate Chelsea, honest it is the only reason :)

Dunno if the situation is concluded Paul.

BBC reporting 2 hours ago that he is 'weighing up' a 2 year deal from Barca, but that Man City still hold out some hope.

Is your info more recent?

Why don't the sugar daddies ever buy teams like Motherwell? *rofl*

He will hang around for another year and seek to make on the 30m euro for both him and his agent.. imho

It reminds me of a re-negotiation meeting when 2 players out of contract were waiting on news of their future.

The first player was told "We want to give you another year, and are offering £600 playing and £400 not playing, which was acceptable to him. As he left the managers office the other player was waiting outside. He quietly passed on 6 and 4, so player 2 joins the manager in his office and is advised of the good news of an offer of another year. £500 playing and £300 not, he immediately said you gave hime 6 and 4!, Ah but he's a better player than you!

Not when he's not playing he's not!

So a deal was struck for £500 and £400

Another True story!

Paul67,

So should we expect to see Fletcher turn down Burnley?

For Footballing reasons.

tojo - money talks

blantyretim - It was about Samuel Eto'os appreciation of 1991's pop music sensation Chesney Hawkes.

He can't wear this uniform without some compromises.

SuperSutton - from last thread. There's not really a waiting list these days. Hasn't been for a while really.

Paul, Lost my last password, can you forward tgo my email, thankx finnharp.

Paul67,

Money is the driving force in modern day football.

Eto never turned down Man City for footballing reasons. He knows he can get 'double' his money on a free transfer next June and thats before his wages.

Eto will be demanding £25M sign on next June.

and here's the good bit - it could well be Man City that pay it.

Bet Eto says it wasnt him that soured the move to Man City - hence not burning any bridges.

The boys not daft.

tojo - edumecating one and all

RogueLeader - "Something sticks in my craw about these wee teams getitng gobbled up by sugar daddies then buying themselves into success."

They're the Viv Nicholsons of the football world. What will happen when the toys get discarded, when the dodgy petrochemical billionaires move on to their next plaything, and when the grasping American speculators realise they can't refinance the massive debts incurred in buying EPL clubs?

I tell you what will happen: karma.

Eto'o seems more interested in getting one over on Barcelona by denying them a fee from his transfer by becoming as Bosman in 12 months time. To Rogueleader. You seem quite happy when Celtic buy all the best players from the likes of Hibernian etc but don't like other teams doing it!!! A bit hypocritical aren't you!!

I only read it because I wasn't 1st,
dont like second place...;o(

I think that Samuel views Man City as a Circus, and at his age he's not ready to join the carnival...He's also someone who enjoys the lifestyle in Barcelona, and is well aware Manchester is a huge drop from a quality of life perspective....he's a bright guy, with an extremely intelligent wife......he will make his own decisions and money won't be #1 on his list of priorities....

I would be surprised if when he eventually does leave Barca his destination is not another world class city....London, Milan, Paris or maybe New York

"We have BTM on record saying we will need to sell big to buy medium."

Did he say that ??......where and when

"DD has to sanction some serious spending.
JR has to put a rocket up a few posteriors. Alternatively find RP's / AC's phone number.
PL has to start to earn even his basic wage.
BTM needs time and money."

Agreed on DD.....On JR no evidence to suggest he is not doing what he should be doing.....On PL, i agree he needs to deliver.....if he is paid a bonus for the financial year finishing today, there should be a shareholder revolt.....he needs to prove he can be more than someone who just reduces the debt by reducing the playing quality.....

BTM....i believe we have potentially a great manager here......he needs to be not only given time and money....he needs to be given control.....

i am probably guilty of banging on about this, but i have a huge concern over peter lawells role in recruitment and player sales.....he should have no role other than nailing down the fine details of the contract....he should do that within the figures instructed to him by the manager....not the other way around

empowering people by passing them responsibility is crucial to developing good management....PL is instructed , presumably by DD and JR, on what the financial targets are for the year....they empower him within that instruction....he equally should empower the manager, by giving him a formal budget and giving him control over that.....i would want that principal in place as the #1 condition in the working environment moving forward

Paul...footballing reasons????????????

SAMUEL ETO'O'S £25million move to Manchester City is in danger of collapsing because of the Barcelona star's greed.

The Cameroon star is set to become the highest-paid player in the world by pocketing £250,000 a week for the next four years if he joins City.

But he is demanding a £12.5m signing-on fee and that could scupper the deal at the last minute.

Eto'o's agent Josep Maria Mesalles said: "If there is not a 180-degree turnaround then he will stay with Barcelona."

Catalan giants Barca were ready to let their star striker, 28, go for a cut-price fee because he only has one year left on his contract.

President Joan Laporta appeared resigned to losing Eto'o on Sunday when he revealed the hitman has a stratospheric offer from City.

But SunSport can reveal Eto'o believes he is entitled to pocket the extra cash because of the way Barcelona seem to be driving him out of the Nou Camp.

Eto'o is not prepared to miss out on the huge signing-on fee he could expect if he saw out his contract and signed for a club of his choosing next year and is therefore asking for that money now.

It is unclear whether that cash would come out of the fee City cough up or whether the Arab owners of the Eastlands club will be forced to shell out more money.

G'day CQN'ers,

I would like to have seen Eto'o at Man. City, well I've been telling the man u'ers down here, that as Man City are now the richest club in the world, they can buy their way to the EPL title, ye should see their faces when I add in the 700m debt at man u .........

Seriously though the EPL is boring with no real sustained challenges coming from outside the top 4 (top 2 even), it's all about money nowadays and they have as much right as anybody else to buy the best players.

Having said that I do look forward to the day the EPL bubble bursts

You were third!

Paul67 from the previous post...

I'm a right in believing that Bobo will get a loyalty bonus at the end of his contract which expires today?

I seem to remember it was posted somewhere that it was in the range of £1M and was part of the reason he didn't want to leave in January as he would have lost it if he had.

An addition to this is that surely JVoH, Naka and Hartley will all also be entitled to a loyalty bonus as well.

Any idea of how much this would be?
And whether this impact BTM spending power (if any)?

/Bishop B

Barcabhoy: i am probably guilty of banging on about this, but i have a huge concern over peter lawells role in recruitment and player sales.....he should have no role other than nailing down the fine details of the contract....he should do that within the figures instructed to him by the manager....not the other way around

Keep banging on.:-) I agree TM needs to have total control over the use of his budget.

"SAMUEL ETO'O'S £25million move to Manchester City is in danger of collapsing because of the Barcelona star's greed."

disagree with that. my view is that he sees man city for what they are - not even a fraction of the club that barcelona are, but by far the richest in the world.
so he's asking for as much money from them as possible - what other draw do they have? - because he knows deep down he would rather stay with barcelona, who in their right mind wouldn't?

i'd be doing the same - why not demand silly money to see if they offer it? they have nothing else going for them.
they have no pedigree, not a patch on barca's history, not even in europe this season, smaller stadium, not as good training facilities and they're in manchester. it's an alright place but barcelona it aint.

of course the english press is gonna be negative about him for turning down their precious 'best league in the world'. sorry he's already playing in the real one, and with the best team.

There's no way Eto will get a £25m signing on fee if he signs as a free agent. Offers of £200k per week don't come round often. If Man City go somewhere else (and they will go somewhere else!) there aren't many, if any, clubs who would offer the same wages.

dean

"disagree with that. my view is that he sees man city for what they are - not even a fraction of the club that barcelona are, but by far the richest in the world".

In which case, if he does get the money and decide to go to Eastlands, you will accept it is for reasons of greed then and not football?

Still think we'll see Eto'o playing in the light blue of Man City next season..clearly he is a class player and Barcelona are trying to manage their asset by offering a new contract. According to the BBC its the same he's on at the moment so likely to either ride it out or sign for Man City.

Reasons for signing for City now
1. Money is on the table
2. Could get injured or have a bad season
3. World Cup year - no pressure to perform if Cameroon qualify

Always think that players who think they'll be able to sell themselves through World Cups, Euro Championships etc fall flat on their face and its the surprise packages who come through.

The rumours I am hearing from down the road in Abu Dhabi are that City will continue to sign players and maybe he will be heartened by that and will lead him to sign...along with Tevez and Lescott

I just can't see Barca letting him see out his contract...they will cash in while he is a prized possesion and 30m Euro's for a 28 year old is good business.

More importantly - any signs of white smoke before the players head for OZ? Would really give us all something to cheer..actually I'd even settle for us announcing who we are releasing or selling one of the main assets as that will start to give us an inside thought to where we are heading...at the moment I feel we are on the road to nowhere BUT I am sure after a wee signing I will be feeling a lot more positive.

Tell us there will be news soon Paul67??

Malone19 - "If Man City go somewhere else (and they will go somewhere else!)"

Boydichenko's agents phone is fully charged and waiting

I'd imagime, Eto has a clause in his contract giving him either a % or fixed sum (maybe the £12 1/2M mentioned) if he is transferred. Barca by offering him a new contract are using this as a loophole to sell him on without the clause being triggered.
maybe eh

What would be the CL group for der hun that would record the greatest score on the laughometer?

My personal fav would be Arsenal/Real M/FOD/Wolfsburg

or maybe

Barca/Inter Milan/huns/Wolfsburg

Much hilarity guaranteed I would think....

RE: ETO and wages.

How does tax in this country compare to Spain? Would ETO not get whalloped for tax in UK for 50% of his income? I've never got even remotely close to the level of income where tax varies much from your average bloke in teh street so could this tax concern also be a consideration for a man who wants to get even richer?

£200,000+ is a huge amount of money and for me..... ridiculous considering the global financial issues seen in the last 12-18 months and job losses and all the pain that goes with it.

Quite sickening the way the game is being ruined by billionaires who see football as ego trips.

Timisoara 3rd qual and Panathinaikos final qual represent our biggest chances in the 2 draws I feel. Could make the groups with that draw.

Paul67 - I love this stuff it keeps me going through the day (as I have still not got over losing the league last year)
However should Mr Eto's agent not be pushing his client to move? A loyal footballer is not much use to a greedy agent (Mr Tevez)
Next year Roman Chelsea could be skint the new Man City sugardaddy could be in Thailand with the last Man City sugardaddy and the two Scouse Americans could be in Canada with a new Ice Hockey Team. If nothing else it makes you appreciate Mr Desmond! !
Eto will move - bet your house

More importantly - a big decision awaits our new manager - does he have the clout to convince MAF to move to Glagow??

Tom

Paul67

Is Samuel Eto the new Bobo Balde?

Tom,

the last Man C sugar daddy is in Dubai presently. He has obtained a Nicaraguan diplomatic passport along with about 10 others.

Hail Hail

twists n turns,

yes if he joins city i will accept it's for the money. why else would anyone go there?

to try and say his greed is responsible for him not joining man city would be ridiculous though.

IMO he sees it like this - i don't really want to join you, so i'm going to either price myself out of moving to you and then join a top club for the right reason (like ronaldinho and kaka who are currently being paid less then they would have been at man city) or you're going to pay me an obscene amount of money.

As it is yet another quiet news day, why not enjoy a few more Celtic photos, this time from the magnificent 3-0 win against Benfica in the CL groups stage.

Unfortunately I don't have any shots here of the actual game in progress due to a certain individual complaining to stewards after I took picture 24. I managed to reel off all the subsequent shots in the intervening two minutes, before being ordered to put my camera away or be ejected from the ground for contravening the stadium byelaws!

I don't suppose this chap is normally photographed when he ventures out... yeah right!

I remember when Shearer snubbed Man U for Blackburn in 1993 people said it was for the money...probably true BUT surely there is something about being in on a new adventure from the outset.

I do think City have purchased well since the Kaka debacle..will they push the top 4...maybe or maybe not...but this is an adventure one I am sure other managers in the past have been able to sell on to potential signings.

To heck with Eto, Barca and Man City.

I was referring to my post on the previous article regarding our league place...Honest..... H.oooooops

Hi Paul,

I disagree that the Eto deal has collapsed.

Sky Sports runs with the headline Eto'o wants to stay but if you read further....

"If Barca don't want him they should say so, so we can pursue the player's future in a professional manner.

"The club said coach Pep Guardiola did not want him. Guardiola has not told the player he is not required."

Eto'o has a contract with Barcelona until 2010, but Mesalles claims he did not receive an offer of an extension until almost midnight on Monday when the club offered a two-year extension on the same salary.

Mesalles believes that, if Barcelona have received an offer from City they should be open about it.

"If they have a serious offer from Manchester City, and if they want to continue with this negotiation we could be interested," Mesalles added.

The most imprtant line is:

"We haven't spoken to City but if Barca have reached an agreement it shouldn't be that difficult to reach a deal."

It appears that Barca may be haggling for more money, but it would be a catastrophic business decision to reject such a deal for a player who only has one year to run on his contract & is approaching his 30's. I also think that anyone who thinks that Barca wouldn't sell for £30m is naive to say the least.

I doubt any player would turn down even half of the reported amount per week unless he wasn't the full shilling

Anyway, what about our beloved Tic - no news is bad news!!!

Henke

I guess there will be some truth in some of what you report. If the Mark Brown part is indeed true, he'd be f***n sold to Albion Rovers for 3 bob if I had my way.

How could he get any respect from his team-mates if he was behaving in such a way?

And byrraway..he's shoite anyway

Paul67 -

I fail to see what this has to do with Real Madrid....

WG

I cant help but think of Bobo when things like this get mentioned

Football is the strangest of games, and contains the stranget mix of views and opinions, in many ways its a bit like when you notice that the teenage lassies with the big heavy bump getting on the bus, or the ones already pushing the prams, are usually mingers, its a strange but true fact in the vast majority of cases in everyday life that when you see an upduffed teenager the first and automatic thought is " How the hell did that happen ? "

Football is just as wierd, I mean, WGS thought that Captain Mick was a better central defender than Bobo, eh... I dont think so, but just as there is room in the world for overly friendly ugly lassies, there's room in the world for strange footballing opinions.

Mr Eto may well be a man of principle, or, he may well be holding out for the jackpot when he's a free agent, either way a sojourn in a crime ridden northern English town doesnt appeal, and who can blame him ?

wouldnt it be ironic if our new management team decided that the rugged man mountain type was just exactly what was required beside the footballers footballer that is GC ?

Its a strange old world

Mark Brown wasn't the snitch. Don't you know that? The snitch was Stephen Mc Manus. Mick was to blame for everyrhing that went wrong last season. Everything. Even when he wasn't playing.

AND his legs are too thin as well. Apparently.

According to some of the garbage on here anyway.

53

Lurgan..

I did your sarcasm. Nearly spat my coffee out laughing.

*dig in lieu of did

Captain Mick is a competant defender, solid, hard working and devoted to the club, all undeniable

But a central defender capable of reaching a European final as a mainstay of his team he is not, he is young and he has time, but he is certainly not there at the moment

M

Lurgan

I admire your stout defence of McManus, its just a pity his defending in general isn't as stout as your defence of him.

He's simply woeful.

Is John Park a brother of Murray Park ?

Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on June 30, 2009 9:35 AM

First of all Sunderland offered him less wages, hence the compensation. At least that was the speculation at the time. However it was a good job Bobo stayed as despite being dropped by WGS and not for the first time. He was recalled and played almost every game up until Xmas of that year. Before Bobo was reinstated we were terrible at the back. Without him in the side it's doubtful we would have accumulated so many points pre Xmas. By the time he got injured the league was as good as secure. For the remainder of the season the side struggled to perform, it was put down to taking the foot of the gas. If you think about it we struggled every time without Bobo in defence and only when in the team did we look secure.

1st season dropped after Artmedia reinstated after Motherwell won the league comfortably.

2nd season dropped, defence was poor and Bobo recalled again the side became stronger at the back. His presence in that first half of the season helped us accumulate a massive points lead over the Huns.

3rd season no Bobo no clean sheets, brought back for two games immediate clean sheet and a game later a somewhat shaky performance but three precious points non the less. went on to win the league on the final day of the season. May have been a fleeting return but his inclusion helped the side regain momentum especially at the back.

4th season no Bobo as we all know, WHO WON THE LEAGUE?

tamrabam 2009 11:51 AM, SydneyTim 11:16 AM

Both excellent posts agree entirely with them.

Some say in absence we make Bobo out to be a better player than he was. I think that kind of statement is a huge cop out. Nobody say’s Bobo was a fantastic footballer we all know he was not the best with the ball at his feet. However he was by far the best defender at the club, WGS might have wanted to play ball playing CB’s but first and foremost a defender has to DEFEND. Something he seemed all to happy to overlook. My own personal opinion of the Bobo situation is WGS was a slave to ZONAL defending. Bobob was never going to be able to adjust to that system. His game was all about attacking the ball, getting rid of it. To ask him to mark space would have been like asking Mike Tyson to fight with one arm behind his back.

Bobo and Zonal would have been a disaster.

MWD

It was just a donation to help Martin, not for your cycle ride. I will as I promised sponsor you at £2 per mile.

I'm considering whether to add a time trial clause into the agreement, you know, every mile must be completed in 3 mins or so :-)

"Even the top club in the world need to manage contract renewals years before they expire." Paul seems to imply that contract renewals is a simple matter. The difficulty from the management side is that it takes two to tango and the player may not want to tango with someone else. By all accounts Barcelona were very keen to sell on Eto'o last summer, but nobody made any offer at all. They might be tempted to sell now, but even 30m Euro will not buy a replacement. Valencia want over 40m for Villa and it is not clear that Villa is better than Eto'o. Given the number of goals that Eto'o has scored for Barcelona, including one in each of their two recent Champions League victories, one could say that he has more than payed off any transfer fee they might lose. The big problem for Barcelona is that in January they will lose 3 key players - Eto'o, Touré and Keita to the African Nations Cup - and they desperately need to find top quality cover. And they do not seem to have the kind of money that Real Madrid have to splash out. An interesting few weeks lie ahead.

DD.

We can argue all day about his defending. I know your opinion of him. We disagree - nothing wrong in that.

What I find dispicable was some posters continual attemppts to undermine him on non football matters.

Immediately after the Aiden / Artur incident there were posters on here declaring that Mick was the snitch. Others were only too eager to follow this allegation like sheep.

Then when he was modelling the new strip his physical stature was ridiculed. One poster actually said his legs were too then. Again the sheep followed.

I find that pathetic. Some people wouldn't know an objective opinion if it jumped up and bit them on the arse.

53

Henke7,
Regarding Robert Lewandowski I think we might have missed the boat on this one much like Marc Janko.

The Sky Sports Scout page has the lad priced at between £5-£16M, which even if we are looking at the lower end of this I would assume it would still be too rich for us to be looking at.

It was the conservative bit I had to really think about...

It's not Stephen Mcmanus that deserves ridicule- it's whoever dreamed up this abomination

Even the King would struggle to look like a proper footballer in it.

It does however, seem to some up the state of the club as the Strachan era fizzled out.

However, there is hope for the fashion conscious Celtic minded amongst us as the legendary CQNbadges are still on sale via cqnbadge@googlemail.com.

Each badge costs a fiver, with £4.00 being for the benefit of Mr Kane.

Lurgan

Oh I agree, the non football matters raised by some are nonsense IMO.

Didn't see the thing about the thin legs! did raise a chuckle though. Although i'm not jumping on the bandwagon about the legs I have said on here previously that he doesn't have the physical stature to be a centre half and is far from being the mythical 'Big Mick'. Maybe why MON started him as a left back? I was in the front row at almondvale the day he slid clean into the advertising hoarding and injured himself.

We do disagree and as you say nothing wrong in that. For me he's a woeful centre half and we can do much much better. I also think we have better captains on board already. Again just my opinion.

2) I agree. Heard this from 4 sources now though so im beginning to believe it.

3) Rag speculation i hope, but i heard Phil Brown had been in touch personally.

4) I agree. Expect the fee to be disappointing though. Associate was enticing them by name dropping transfer targets (i.e dutch trio from real madrid etc) What a fan dan.

5) I cant concur with this one; but maybe he got his head down after he signed the new MEGA contract?

6) I am too gutted to talk about Naka leaving. Agree about Mizuno positional differences but still think he will play wide right (if he does play).

7) Sheridan. Offfft. I know what your saying mate, but I also remember him turning on the half way line and casually chipping the ball 30 yards over barry robsons head on the touchline. Not my kind of player.

8) Agree re Lewandowski. Heard he's lethal in front of goal.

9) I agree.

10) I agree with your opinions also, apart from the hinkel one. He apparently only left seville as we 'promised' him first team football. Think we also need to pay him more when we are not in Champs League?

good stock response there, i love it when people say that, why not just say the truth " i made it all up"

Tommy @ 1:55

I totally agree with you. Even better, out on loan in Hungry with a few of the irish youngsters.

That will keep him quiet.

The mrs has informed me that big Micks legs are fine!

However, I do not believe he has it in him to become a Celtic leg end.

Paul Hartley's Beard....touche

It was a rhetorical question in my defence.

twists n turns- it's not so much the top, as the shorts.

We've had a few minor variations on the white top lately, none of them are as good as this wee gem

Bobo Balde was, in his latter days as a regular at Celtic a disaster waiting to happen. In fact he was often simply, a disaster.

Rose tinted specs at work again IMO

Robertressel

take issue with you on that one, season before last, we were struggling for a clean sheet. In goes bobo up at tannadice, hey presto clean sheet and Craig Levien admits he had to change his entire game plan (which was get the ball in the box in the air, hmmmmmmm wonder why???) when he saw his name on the team sheet.

Bobo had the fear factor, enough said IMO.

DD

blantyre tim -you may be experiencing a wee dose of the 'moderators'

There's a lot of it about.

Did you see the wee story in the Press about hoopslegend Magnus Hedman being caught with a car full of performance enhancing drugs?

Blimey, I thought, that's a turn up.

Henke7,
Janko was rumoured to have been over at Lennoxtown in January.
We were meant to be interested in him for around £1.5M.

Then he went back to Salzburg and before you know it he signs a new 4yr contract with them.
Not sure if this was a bold attempt to get them more money but that and that fact that he had a great second half of the season saw his stock rise way beyond our finacial clout (being quoted from £6M upto £10M with Spurs sniffing round him).

Regarding the Lewandowski I think I might have gotten this player mixed up with the older Polish defensive midfielder Mariusz Lewandowski that we were interested in back last summer and back in January.

Now going for him over the striker Robert Lewandowski I could believe. :oD

/Bishop B

DBBIA - Magnus Hedman got as much benefit from Steriods as Christopher Biggins would from a bottle of Slim Fast and a copy of Razzle.

Has anyone got a number for setanta? Need to cancel.

DD @3:20

That's a different issue. I'd have BB in my team any day of the week. Better than any CH at the club - even now.

I just can't see how McManus got so much stick with so many players in front - and behind him - backfiring.

Last term the team was awful.

Boruc, Naylor, Broown (in patches) Hartley, Crosas (in patches), Mc Geady, Naka, Skippy, Samaras, JVOH, Maloney, Brown (gk. All the above were dreadful either consistently - or inconsistently - throughout the whole season. I cannot think of any of the above who inspired me or gave me any kind of confidence. But it was always Mc Manus who got the stick. On these boards I mean for he did not receive that sort of criticism from pundits, analysts or from reporters.

As far as I'm concerned it was a lot of bandwagon jumping.

Not jokes about the backfiring please.

Anyway. What about the qualifiers? Armagh all to do this weekend.

53

Henke7

Most of that sounds believable but I'd be bitterly disappointed at only looking for £5m for Boruc, if that was true it may be more a reflection on his attitude than on his ability.

Lewandowski and to a lesser extent stillic wouldn't agree to a trial IMO but you never know.
Sheriden should have been 3rd or even 4th in line for a chance with the first team so that wouldn't surprise me.

Are you Keith Jackson?

You seemed to have missed the significant part of my quote "dont shoot the messenger"....Are you Graham Spiers?

One of your comments at 1:45 is potentially libelous and does you and your source no credit whatsoever. And 'Don't shoot the messenger' is no defence in this case.

I'm astounded of forehead it's lasted this long without being deleted. It's very unfair to Celtic and to Paul67.

Henke7

Ha I think the messenger takes a bit of responsibility for running with the stories, it just reads like a lot of unsettling Celtic rumors.

When things become the truth I will be able to handle it.

Nowt to do with being "too hot" it is in the rules.

Henke7

You miss the point entirely. I couldn't care less about the rumours you have presented, but you cannot accuse someone of a criminal offence without proof. Hearsay does not count.

When your post disappears later, this will be the reason. If you want your rumours to remain on the site, I advise you to reconstruct your post with the libelous material removed.

Yer pal. .who likes ye aloater.

Entouradge - I believe the transfer window doesn't open until close of business tonight.

Ok, are we expecting a barrage of signings tomorrow then?;-)

Kojo - You know alot about these Rothschild shenanigans....what did you say your surname was again?

Hmmmmmmmm

I wonder why there are no celtic signing rumours in the redtops nowadays? Is it because

A) Celtic have got it sewn up so tight that no reporter even has a sniff, and in those circumstances the redtops wouldn’t just make any rubbish up?
B) No one believes the redtops anymore?
C) No one is interested in who we sign?
D) Wimbledon is hot this week?

It’s a strange one right enuff, the daily records two old bingo ball machines must have broken.
Players names in one machine
Clubs names in the other

Occasionally though even that method is correct, (remember its steven pressley and its celtic) and we just didn’t believe them did we.

Entouradge - "Ok, are we expecting a barrage of signings tomorrow then?"

No, but it is only 30th June, I won't be hitting the panic button just yet considering BTM has not even had the chance to assess his squad yet!

Rogue Leader / Celtic First,

To reiterate, it wont happen again.

RogueLeader

The transfer window may not be open but what does that matter? do you expect an influx of players on the 1st of July? neither do i,

and being linked to Fortune, Cox and Fletcher hardly fills me with confidence either

Paul Hartleys Beard - as I said to my good man Entouradge - it is only 30th June, I won't be hitting the panic button just yet considering BTM has not even had the chance to assess his squad yet!

Jermaine Pennant,

Rogue leader @4.28
If we are not buying players because BTM has not yet assessed his squad, then it seems that we actually rushed the BTM signing since we didn’t need him to be here until the first day of the new pre season.

Like most fans I fear that the lack of (reported) activity is a sign of little activity. Hope im wrong again though.

If the board get it wrong this season again, there would be no way back for them.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. Rogue Leader.

Samuel Eto'o has just Twittered that he is going up and down Lennoxtown main street looking for The Gate.

Viewfaethewindae can you guide him in?

Kojo....top notch

The View....His dad wasnt a landlord.

I think this mess we are currently in is of our own creation. We(Celtic) knew WGS was for the off on Dec 27th, coincidentally Celtic's form dipped right after that, won't hold my breath on a WGS apology. We went for Coyle who didn't like Lawwell, then sniffed about Martinez before finally getting Mowbray. I do not believe for one second Mowbray didn't have a list of players already he wanted to bring in. I don't believe Celtic had any intention of signing anyone in June because the obsession with the balance sheet is so prevelant. The Celtic support need a new hope and some new heroes, that is the be all and end all.

PHB. Big chance actually.

Henke7

I think there's a few too many bloggers sitting too long in the sun, either that or mibees, its a case of where there's smoke.....some bugger is crap with a barbecue

I dont doubt your source, and can quite well imagine the type of person if not the name of said fosters induced informant, however My big problem with the aforementioned Mt Broon is that he is a crap goalkeeper, in fact if they ever write a book of " Celtic's Worst Signings Ever " said Broonie will have little competition for the number one jersey, although if someone threw it to him he'd probably drop it....

Oops, is that libel ?

M

tamrabam - so you are too are of the school of thought that there is something wrong with Celtic as there have been no signings yet, when the manager has not had any sessions with the players yet? He will have been working up until now but would only have the word of staff who were already in situ on the current crop so pardon me for not slaughtering the guy for not spending £Xm when he is only 14 days in the job and not seen his squad in the flesh yet.

I despair, I really do. What exactly do you expect? Do you think Celtic could ever deliver on your expectations?

I don’t believe it, Celtic have just signed……

I'd be surprised of TM didn't sign any of his former WBA players and we probably have to trust him on that. Wiki has this on Greening, which is interesting: "Team mate Dean Kiely has said that Greening "sprays passes around like a quarterback" as part of Albion's ethos of attacking football under Tony Mowbray". I've never been a fan of 'defensive mid' or 'attacking mid' - one should sit while the other goes and vice versa, so two all-round midfielders would be my preference. If Greenign fits this, all well and good, as long as there are more signings to come which could be bracketed as more exciting.

Kojo,

Lokks like Mr Fletcher off to Burnley. I am wee bit dispoointed because i believe he would have dne very very well at Cletic with better players around him.

WGS, agreed re Fletcher

Dontbrattbackinanger - I heard a rumour that Gary Caldwell was so furious at SuBo losing out to Diversity in the Britain's Got Talent final that he wrote a sternly worded letter to his MP.

I've also heard that Peter Lawwell was wearing what he thought were black socks, but when I looked at them closely they were just very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very dark blue.

Fletcher signed for Burnley.....agreed he is a good player but I'd rather spend the £3m on someone else.

Stephen Fletcher has signed for Burnley for £3m

Burnely

I wasnt keen on us spending that type of money on a player who was still learning, good luck to him.

Hats off to OC, in he went and deal all but done, hardly a sniff in the media...we obviously did not fancy!

We should tale a leaf out of OC's book in signing players!

A personal observation, disappointed we are about to start training tomorrow with the same squad, minus Naka. It will be intersting to see if JVoH turns up as his contract ends today and no confirmation if he is being offered a new deal!

I'm disappointed today as there are no new faces. I will be mega disappointed if we go to Brisbane without at leaat 2 new players.

I appreciate TM needs time to assess the squad but he must have a fair idea from his scouting missions north of the border when at WBA. AND from wee Lenny who I am sure has bent his ear!

All Clubs should have new players ready to go from day one so they can meet new team-mates and to get the benefit of a full pre-season of their new employers in order to get know there ways and expectations!

Don't get me a wrong I'm not having a go at TM and I know I've got to suffer short time pain in order to get long time gain.

Rant over!!

...is made for you and me!

Hail Hail!

Dubai Tim - £3m for Fletcher?

Remember when £1.2m got us Pierre Van Hoijdoonk?

Modern inflation is rubbish.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. WGS @ 6.23.

As I said to you,recently..

I liked Mr. Fletcher, in the beginning.. and then, after some solid reflection..I arrowed on his poor scoring record.. and
I backed off of him.

So.

Let's Face it,Pal..

I am glad that we dodged that expensive bullet!

I feel the exact same way, about Mr. Fortune.

He is not a Goal Scorer!

I do not think that he would add anything to our Team.. except, his name oan the Pay Roll!

Geez, Ah hope Mr. Fortune's Destination lies elsewhere.

Don't worry,pal..

Godot,is pulling the strings..and we wull get a Guid Yin.. you'll see.

Kojo.
yer pal.. who likes ye a loat.

My own thoughts on the Steven Fletcher situation?

I'll sleep easier tonight.

It's like when ye wur wee, n didnae hae much fur sweeties, ye bought the wans that lasted...gobstoppers - toffee, esp everlasting strips - caramels n that kinny thing

Ah huv the feelin' Fletch wid've been a strawberry mivvi - awright if yer wantin' shoart term pacified...but soon...yer left empty

Naw, we'll wait fur sum toaffy

I thought that Fletcher looked a decent player whenever I watched him play against us.

Not sure who this mythical striker is that some posters think we can sign for £2-£3M and is much, much better than Fletcher -you know the one, the guy who is the finished article and is a guaranteed 30 goal a season man but we can buy him for buttons.

We must hold onto McDonald - and we might as well resign ourselves to the fact that anyone who will sign for the kind of money we are prepared to spend is going to come with significant limitations and/or risks attached.

Henke7 No Matt damon yet? allegations of unsubstantiated rumours on here usually mean matt damon is after you, usually (unlike matt damon) he shouts for assistance in the form of Paul67, surprised hes not been chasing you, must be busy at the CIA? no doubt Mr Bourne will be here soon to tell you Henke by not naming your sources you will be a branded poster, alas no one will ever believe you again?

Keep posting Henke7, don't let the buggers get you down.

Striker..not too expensive...aplenty?

Jermaine Beckford

£2m I reckon

Striker..not too expensive...goals aplenty?

Jermaine Beckford

£2m I reckon

That'll be £4m noo then

£3M for fletch, get their money man, took 4 off us 2 off the hun and 3 for him, and IMO none of them worth the money paid.
PL needs to emulate the hibs.
The best bit for me, is that these were golden eggs and we've now got the goose and gander, Mr Mowbrey & Mr Park will hopefully resume their midas touch, with enough to start paying for quality potential (£1M) rather than picking up free decent potential, though free is always good :o)

Twists n Turns

Jermaine Beckford, League 1 - £2+ Million.
You are underlining exactly the point I am making. Might be a great signing, but is he too risky - and how would TGFITW feel about him in a Celtic shirt as the JVOH replacement?

Look at Sharp...Kojo's big shout last year and he's sunk without trace.

I don't really mind us taking a bit of a punt on someone, but it's all the sage mutterings of 'no good enough for the money', 'too young', 'too old' etc. that start to get on my nerves. Maybe it's just the heat getting to me.....

philvisreturns, Kojo, Twists n turns totally agree Fletcher is a good player but would he take us any further forward, I very much doubt it, plus I am getting board signing Hibs players.

Will certainly sleep a lot better tonight...although I think that cos I was still up at 1.38am watching Murray win at Wimbledon last night!!!

My only concern is that Hull look like they are pulling out of the deal for Fortune...I just wish if TM is going to sign a striker he has worked with that he signs Ishmael Miller..big, strong and a good scoring ratio as well as being young.

Twists n turns

Im sure I heard silly money being quoted for Beckford last week, Burnley interest I think.

Aye,
I'm quite happy to trust the latest team with trying their best for us. They have a tough job ahead, they have proven they have talent individually and as a team. I'm getting happier by the day.
In fact I expect a couple by Friday, I feel it in my water.

This weather is superb, on my second bottle of Merlot and it's not 7.30 yet, forgot to have my dinner too. ;o)

The only reason why Hull might be pulling out is that Fortune is making Brown look like the big-mouthed blowhard and self-inflated mug that he is......

Sell big to buy medium x 3.
BTM was quoted in the weekend papers 10 days ago.

A case of losing a "world" class player to support a much needed strengthening across the team.

Interesting if we got £6-7mill for AB or any other member of the Big 4 who would we buy?

Sell = AB or AMcG or SB
Buy = JMcC + MAF + credible left back

Good business?

One thing is that with the sale of SF to Burnley we now have a marker - £3mill.

Interesting to see who plays better if both SF and MAF end up in the premiership.

Looking like it is going to be one very long July.

Finally any info on three tips for the top / targets available in the SPL?

Leftfield sorry leftback is SS (unfortunate initials) from the TFOD. Any takers?

OUT OF ORDER!!

Blantyre,

30 31 is the time when a player hits his peak. Hartley is done, his best days were under George Burley and just before he arrived for me.

Maniche, not seen as much as him when he went to Spain, but he was a player alright. Wouls skoosh the SPL but would give you some vital experience in Europe. On a Bosman. No brainer for me, when decent quality like that comes up. Worth a punt even just for a year if your not sure.

Paul67:

Fletcher off to Burnley so obviously we did not fancy him. By the way as I posted earlier liked the way Burnley did their business, perhaps we could take leaf out of their book.

Hull bout to pull plug on Fortune, hopefully because WHU are about to sign him.

A question though, do you not agree that some if not all of your new signings should be in place for start of preseason training to give them a chance to bed?

I think they should and as I posted earlier I'll be gutted if we go to Brisbane without new signings! We should not sign for signing sake but can we afford to wait to nearer the end of the window...another 6 or 8 weeks?

...is made for you and me!

Hail Hail!

Suprised Man U are letting go of Danny Gibson.

BlantyreTim,
Thanks for the advice.
I tried the internet cafe thing last year and it couldn't display the page.
Whether that was a one-off thing or not I don't know.
I've got an i-pod and have put a few Celtic Underground and, today thanks to a link(sorry, can't remember who by) Lost Bhoy podcasts.
If I ration these that might do me.
Thanks again and au revoir!

What do i know.

I would have been happy to have Owen Coyle as our new manager.I think there is something special about his man management skills.

Mr Mowbray was behind him in my pecking order.

Coyle signs Fletcher.
Celtic on Mr Mowbrays instruction feel he no longer represents good value for money ,and we drop our interest.

Mr Mowbray may be starting to prove me wrong.Maybe he is a better judge of a player than Coyle?
Fletcher will be a flop in the EPL.

Think Kanu at 32 could do a job. Very intelligent player.

Walter Lopez, Radioslav Kovac and Diegeo Tristan all released from West Ham.

Kojo

Celtic were strongly linked with Fortune last season.

I posted on this wonderfull blog,as far back as one year ago, that i was very disenchanted with us for being interested in a striker with such a poor goal scoring record.

Now ,could i be wrong?

There are a couple of EPL clubs very interested in him.Their managers have seen him up close and personal,as has our new leader.

Could it be that he has something that we are missing?

Yet i still have my doubts.
Did he play out of his skin for a short period ,to impress the EPL managers?
Maybe he can't sustain that form over a full season and more?
Why do Nancy want rid?

I think that he has played very well for Mr Mowbrays W.B.A.His form for Mr Mowbray has stirred his interest.Mr Mowbray is judging him on what he has seen.

Howeva, there is a big question mark over how long he can keep it up.

Daniel Cousan raped us last season. He was impressive against the likes Arsenal.Yet his form was very inconsistant.

Mr Fortune may be in the same mould.

Evening all,

saw someone mention beckford for £2m earlier. No Chance of that figure.
He has been touted for minimum £4m probably closer to £5m, which is absolutely shocking!

Watched a couple of Leeds games and he looked the bizniz until I watched the 2 Millwall centre halfs completely nullify him in the Play offs Semi-Final 2nd leg at Elland Road.

Big gamble for that price. Then again any player who hasn't done it at the top level is a gamble, but he would be a particularly expensive gamble.

Boa tarde,

Just a quick few things from midwinter Rio de Janeiro (it's a bone chilling 19°C here today) where a sure sign of winter is people wearing socks (white cotton, 3 perr furra pound, of course) with their flip flops.

Anyway, just want to say that I had the pleasure of meeting Paul (not the 67 version) from Dumfries last week. Paul's a lurker on here and it turned out we'd a few mutual friends. So if any of you CQN'ers are in the vicinity of Dumfries and feeling peckish, the Palmerston Cafe's the place to be. (do I get a free poke o' chips now Paul?).

On the money in football thing - there was a very good (well I thought so) interview with Phillipe Scolari in last Sunday's paper. I'll try and mind and translate the best bits (if I can be ersed / if anybody's interested) next time I'm on screaming bairn alert.

Anything else is a bonus and theres been lots of bonuses since then.
A good tradesman unlikely to be an artisan, but for me he has hit that level a few times and I'm glad it was for the Celtic.
With global warming do you think it will be easier for Celtic to sign players from warmer climates or would the scottish game still be a deterrent ?

TTT
is your vehicle full for Friday?
had a problem with transport and might be looking for a return journey?

BT

Canamalar,

I don't think where the players are from is vital in them coming to Celtic. For me i think too many people use this as a reason for players not coming.

I tend to look on the positive side:
1. We are Celtic Football Club
2. We have 60,000 fans at each game and become a hero for them.
3. We play in europe every season
4. Good chance of medals
5. We do pay decent wages and we make everybody feel welcome.

Scotland is a nice country to live in. Many people that have came from different countries have decided to stay after their have finished there playing career. Numan, Sutton, Hartson Larsson and countless others love Scotland for living.

TT

have I changed so much that you thing of me as one of them?

you are nnow off of the list for meeters and greeter on Friday..;0)

BT not BK

TTT

Disagree entirely about Beckford being a gamble. Not for the SPL he wouldn't! Admittedly untried at Euro level but then given the market we're in, some risk will be involved whomever.

The same Millwall team you refer to went to Elland rd just after new year and were well beaten 2-0, with Beckford scoring twice. No doubt lessons were learned, and if he was occupying 2 defenders in the play off, others should benefit from the space.

And he won't go for £4m in my opinion. I think £2m would get him, he's listed now I believe.

Put it this way, Ive seen enough of Samaras, JVOH, Killen, Hutchison and Sheridan to convince me I'd have Beckford before all 5. And given his age, I'd have him ahead of Skippy as well.

Blantyre,

I didn't mind Hartley, i thought GS wasted him as well. He tried to convert him to a role that he wasn't accutomed to. But fair play to him, never once complained and like most of us would have done the same to get a team for out boyhodd heroes. I don't think we got to see the best of Paul Hartley.

His goal against Spartak was typical PH, we never got to see it as much due to him being asked to play s different role.

BT,

I think I should have space for 1 maybe 2 but don't know as yet. Got a phone call to make tomorrow to our host to find out who/where/when etc.

Players who are performing well rarely become Bosmans.

Some may have refused to sign new contracts,to allow themselves to negotiate better deals when they become a Bosman.

For the most part ,their clubs have decided that they are happy to let them go.

We should be very wary of signing Bosmans.

Paul67 - are you preparing us for this ?

I was really pleased that Gary Caldwell declined to become the best paid player in Burnley by joining Burnley. While he is out of contract next year and will be able to leave Celtic for free, his chances of getting an even richer contract offer are limited; this decision was made for football reasons.

Celtic appeared keen to move him on. Today he is worth €3m, money which Celtic could use to strengthen their team for the future, but the prospect of losing him for nothing a year from now, or offering him a wage competitive with what he is likely to get on the open market, will not appeal.

Even the 2nd top club in Scotland need to manage contract renewals years before they expire.

And finally...the real action starts 2 mins in to the clip...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAHSvRzMGvs&feature=fvw

TnT,

at £2m I would definitely go for Beckford, however I read last week that Sheff Utd were offering £2m + Billy Sharp for Beckford.

Like all transfer speculation who knows how accurate it is, but that could be an indication of the going rate.

Apparently he has been listed as he rejected Leeds latest contract offer so he could be a possible.

Others in that ilk who could be worth a shot (but who are not listed) are the Posh duo Mackail-Smith and McLean.

TinyTim like you have been unimpressed by the record of fortune but as you said theres a lot of interest in him from the premiership also west brom fans speak very highly of him and describe him as an Emile Heskey type player according to the west brom fans if there as a player they would like to keep outa the whole squad it would be fortune by a country mile

CB

looked at those utube clips and never seen anything better than Samaras on his game, whats beckford's ratio?

on the continuing debate over fortune, i'm still in favour of signing him.

posters, such as kojo (sorry pal), continue to bring up his goalscoring record but i stand by the stance that he helps the rest of the team to score more goals whilst chipping in with a decent if unspectacular tally himself.

football's a team game and so if having a certain player in the XI means the TEAM scores more goals then he is a valuable asset.

you cannot base the signing/not signing of a player only by looking at his statistics for past seasons. doing so means you overlook numerous facets to a players game.

fortune brought more goals out of the midfield, something pointed out by PG. some responses to this have been along the lines of "you don't pay your midfielders to score to score, you pay your strikers". i don't subscribe to this view, as my point about being a team game suggests. it's too contrictive a view to have IMO.

on top of this i would like to add (in my desperation for football to get going again) i have actually been looking at some MOTD highlights of WBA's games from last season on footytube.

they're only highlights but often are extended ones and from them i feel you can get a fair idea about individual players and the team's style of play.
what i saw is football that is very pleasing on the eye and they have given a good game to most teams they've played. bad luck and individuals are the most common reasons for their defeats.

i also saw some of fortune. from what i've seen he would be a welcome addition to the side IMO.
he does what JVOH did on a good day, holding up the ball well, nice first time flicks and layoffs, bringing others into play, linking midfield and attack. he looks very good with his back to goal, something we've been really lacking up front.

there was also a lot more to his game than what big jan can do:
he looks like he finds space quite well, he is far more physical and looks like he has the capacity to really bully defenders, and he is very quick (another thing we lack) with good dribbling skills and trick if needed.

the one negative i think is that he sometimes lacked a bit of composure in front of goal, possibly explaining his goal record. but what he brings to the team outweighs this flaw IMO.

i think he would most certainly bring the best out of skippy in the way that jan did on a good day, but with more.
he would also bring more out of sammy IMO.

apologies for the long post, just there was a lot to get off my chest as some of the negativity towards this possible signing have been starting to 'irk' me.

i also think we should trust BTM if he thinks that fortune is the man for us.

And Naka

Our wage bill is pushing £40 million....and look at the squad..outside of perhaps Boruc and Aiden, maybe Broony, I would rate Beckford above all of the current lot

Beckford is better than 1 in 2 with Leeds and Scunthorpe

canamalar

Samaras on his game??? I bow to your powers of memory

Paul67,

Can't agree with you on this one. You are being far to romantic about Eto'o and Barcelona, both of whom have the cash signs bulging in their sockets at the moment.

The Eto'o situation is all about the art of negotiation.

He knows City are essentially small-time and therefore desperate to sign him. He knows Barca are desperate to sell because they can't believe their luck that anyone would offer 25million for a 28-year-old with one year left on his contract.

Therefore he stalls, daring City to up their offer. His "reluctance" to move has nothing to do with football, and everything to do with ekeing out as many pennies as possible.

Example Two: £3million for Fletcher?

Proves only one thing: that Rod Petrie is the smartest negotiator in the SPL because that is an astonishing amount to play for a player with a poor goalscoring record in a poor league. One who lacks pace, does not seem overly blessed with technical ability, and who has very little playing experience at the top level. To me, Craig Beattie is a better player!

Stunningly bad business from Burnley. Excellent negotiation from Hibs.

Example Three: I see Hull are making noises about looking elsewhere if Fortune doesn't get a move on. Again, Fortune is playing a clever game. TM had negotiated a 1.5million release for him, and now, thanks to a bidding war stirred up by his agent, we are talking 4million plus. Excellent negotiation by his agent (if it comes off of course).

Beckford 63 goals in 104 games

Samaras 53 in 190 games

furthering from my post and in response to someone saying greening could be signing - he looks a good player too, wouldn't be against him coming in - good passer, intelligent movement, high work rate. nor chris brunt, great left foot - reminds me of alan thompson. and finally mesenguez, looks classy and exciting. none of the others though.

Fletcher 52 in 189 games
Fortune 64 in 263

twists n turns, average salary for a Championship player is c. £4,000. Average turnover in the Championship is c. £21m - and even that's artificially inflated by the clubs who get parachute payments. The rest make £10m to £15m tops. Promoted Burnley's wage bill last season was under £5m.

I cannot equate our turnover and wage bill with the standard of player you're discussing. Despite their debt, and a wage budget significantly less than ours, Rangers seem to have no problem signing players from the Premiership (e.g. Mendes and Davis).

Why, pray tell, should we be shopping in League 1?

Weekly salary of course...

I asked you who you reckon we should be going for..I have touted Beckford, listed his stats, and you don't want him apparently because it's Leeds. So I ask you to realistically name one or two whom we should be after, and how much will we pay in fee and wages?

I seem to recall Ian Rush came in from Chester, Keegan came from Scunthorpe and there are thousands of others.

Maybe we should go for another Gravesen?

Maybe a better idea would be to let a Spurs/Wigan/Blackburn sign Beckford or a player of similar ilk, watch him bang in 25 goals next season then go after him? Happier now, as long as it's a "big club" and we can now add considerably to our £40m wage bill?

No, we'd be sitting here next year saying there's no point in talking Beckford, he's out of our league.

Ach I'm away tae ma scratcher...

That just shows you how piss poor the SPL is.

For our Forty million wage bill we couldn't even score against this mob.

I know thats the whole wage bill, but we really are watching Scottish football at it's lowest standard in my lifetime.

I haven't ever heard of Mogren before you posted the result.

Totally and utterly embarrassing for the SPL.

Bloke 109,

What ever happened to the confident player at the start of the season? I thought we had bargain whe George was playing like that. The he disappeared on international duty, gets injured and comes back a different player. No confidence and the pace had gone as well.

If he could re captire that form then i think TM might have something to work on and would be very much part of his plans. But will he?

On another note, Did GS ever play that team that played the first half at Fir park? I don't think he did.

Then again Malta has a poor league too.

BT,

assuming its Paul and Martin who will be travelling with me, I will have room for both you and yir auld fella.

Kojo,

you already detailed a lot about the Rothschild's and Goldman Sachs that I agree with, I disagree with you on the length of time of this current downturn, I’ve already said I expect it to last a lot longer.
The last Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Paulson, ex CEO of Goldman Sachs really carved that $700Bn bailout up for his cronies, directly for GS and indirectly through AIG.
It annoys me to read today that there’s talk about cutting the whole Aircraft Carrier project (which has roughly 10,000 jobs dependant on it mainly up here in Scotland) because it is possibly £1Billion over budget but we are spending £12 Billion pounds on London 2012 Olympic Games which will be over in less than one month. The simple fact that the Russians/Chinese are spending heavily on their forces should be enough evidence to carry on but it is never that simple. And the fact those two countries are Communist regimes are heavily influencing the global elite and their plans, they want manufacturing etc transferred over there and they want them as powerful as possible and the UK/ US as weak as possible, well as sovereign nations. ;)

At the end of the day the top Globalists are pulling the strings and are shaping the world the way they want it and they really like the model of Communist China. Rothschilds in China/Russia etc
Your summary of David Icke and his Lizard Men nonsense is probably right on the money. I’ve always said I suspect him of working for some sinister organization. It is quite simple to do get an apparent nutcase to give out really important information mixed with blatant wacko stuff and they will disregard it all.

Bloke_109,
the charlie chaplin music put me off a wee bit, but he never actually scored a lot of goals in that clip, he scored the same goal loads of times :o) but no a lot of goals, the bhoy has to take his doin like a man, roarin n greetin :o) he's got to take on his tormentors and let them know they will have to fight at least.
I'd like him to become of age here, I think without JHOV as his babysitter he will have to make his own space. I got high hopes. But then I did last year too, oh well.
hail hail

Mr Z,

Good signing, i wonder does that mean that ashley cole is a goner?

Paul67,

No Fletcher. Were we interested though ? Who knows??? I think they were. Are we really wanting Fortune?

I'll say this though, Celtic and the players they are after, they must be secured this window. No excuses for 4th time running if targets are not secured by Celtic. The fans will be scunnered if this happens. Early days, i think signings will happen.

For the early planning we getting spouted over the past few seasons by GS etc.. about targets, it didn't really materialise. We don't half dither around too much in nailing targets. Hopefully, this window will see a change.

WBA with Fortune - Played 17 , won 3, drew 5, lost 9 . 14 points. (0.82 per game) For 19. Against 30

WBA without Fortune - Played 21, won 5, drew 3, lost 13. 18 points (0.86 per game) For 17. Against 37

Disnae really back up the fact that he made them a better team, ok they scored more goals but they gained less points , hopefully not a sign of how Tony is going to make us play.

BT,

No probs mate.

HAIL! HAIL!

Hopefully the Hibs result will put into perspective the real chances of us doing a Kaunus this year.

Do we honestly reckon that we will have any additional players by then ?

I´m concerned that if we bomb out of Europe then the most over wrought fans in the world will already have Tony Mowbrays card marked as a championship manager for his reign.

If that were to happen can anyone state whether we can still turn a profit this year. I only ask this as I worry that having couched up circa 3m for Tony that we wont have significant funds even for a spend next year. If that's the case then will we be prepared to go into debt next year? and if we are then why in gods name did we miss the boat this year ... what would have been the point ?

Hail Hail

I am a wee bit worried about our fund raising cyclists.

the high cost of bicycling

Is nobody else encouraged to see that we have passed up the opportunity to sign Fletcher? I think we can be sure that his agent and/or Mr Petrie would have put in a discreet call to Celtic before any bid was accepted and deal finalised.

My opinion for what it wortth on Fortune is simple. Less than 6 months ago he was a £1.5m player - the fee West Brom agreed and Nancy were happy to agree in January. Did he do anything to more than double in value during that period? Not in my opinion. Is any club, in England, beyond Hull really interested/made a bid? I doubt it, Nancy are simply trying to drive the price up and perhaps Celtic are aware of this. Not good value at £3.8m and i believe there would be better value out there

WGS/Zbyszek

Are Radoi and Doran Goian not potentially available at good value in Eastern Europe. Also Florin Bratu from Bucharest

Never mind the first team squad signings!

What is Tony Mowbray going to do about our appalling record in the Football Masters? It's back on this weekend. Fed up watching rangers do well.

Antsman, yes, you have alerted me to this before. I hear you.

Token Tim, speak to you then.

Lurgan53, I hope Tony can charm him but agree, at this stage he holds the cards.

WGS, I didn’t hear a whisper about Fletcher this window.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend...Dean Moriarty @ 9.02

I do not want Mr.Fortune.

And at the risk of boring everyone to death.. it is a risk that I am willing to take.

I have given my reasons. and they are These.

He has a less than Steller Goals Scoring record.. FACT.

He is on the Wrong side of Twenty Five........... FACT.

We cannot expect him to improve any More, he is all Grown up,now..and can stay up,in his Pyjamas,if he wants.

that is only for Starters.

Here is the Nub of the Hub.

He has Played, for Four Professional Teams..Lille, OUT, UTRECHt, Nancy,

He has lasted, less that Two Seasons, with each of those Teams.

Then He was,Transferred out.

and not for a High Fee..always in the region of One Million Potatoes and a bag of Crisps.. at the Most.

In short or in long.. I shall choose the Short.

Once you Meet this Guy, and he plays for you..

YOU QUICKLY Become... DISILLUSIONED!

This information, pal. that I have imparted, is FACTUAL.

This is the History of a Man's Career.

I do not base my dislike for this Man ..or.. base my reasons on not wanting him..on a Few Minutes of Video.. on YOUTUBE.

YOUTUBE VIDEOS, are Notorious for leading the Viewer into False Impressions of a Players Worth..

The Reason is they are Usually Cherry Picked..from his best Performances... and Show the Subject in the Best Possible Light.

Of course,if the Player has a Background of being a High Scoring Model.. with a verifiable Past History of Playing steadily for ONE Team and has a Record of Leaving his former Team/Teams, for an ESCALATING TRANSFER FEE..EACH TIME HE WAS TRANSFERRED.

In that case.. I would vouchsafe, that a YouTube Video starring that particular individual, would probably represent a more Truer Picture.. than a Video of a Player, such as Mr. Fortune.

And lastly, but by no means Leastly...

We need a Player who Can..

TAKE HIS CHANCE OF SCORING THAT ALL IMPORTANT GOAL..

Goal Scoring Chances, especially in the S.P.L. where we are facing a Packed Defence..do not come in Bunches.

The Player we require, must be of a Different calibre than the Strikers that we already Possess.

We require a Special Kind of Player..

A Player who knows his way instictively to the Goal.and positions himself well to reap that one chance that may come, when is comes.

We do not need a Striker who cannot reliably ... well

Strike.

Those are my reasons, why I do not believe that Mr. Fortune would help us achieve our aims.

Kojo.
yer Pal.. who likes ye a loat.

Antsman,

That's a yes, yes!!

Goian and Radoi would be great additions. Now where talking. Radoi would be a general for us in that midfield. Goian a hard as nails type of defender.

Would love Poulsen, this guy for me would a revelation. Another classy Dane to don the hoops. Ask Andrea Hinkel about him. Would be a great signing for us and show that and to quote John Reid, "the fightback" would most seriously be started.

Blantyretim.

What's up doc.

I went out for a haircut, and met a pal,you will probably know what happened next,Head down the pan for an hour,I can't see me having much drink on Friday.

I had 2 pints of special, then I cutback on the beer, had two bottles of lager, and half a dozen whisky's,I have to say I can't hold my liquer.

By the way what are you wanting me for.

Paul67,

I did hear a whisper, but your whisper would be more accurate than mine, so if you heard nought, then my whisper is talking a load of (in the words of Gerry McNee) tosh.

If i were to say that our first choice personnel in the heart of the defence might not be featuring as reguraly as we used to see, would i be far off the mark?

Here's my prediction, if Caldwell stays then i think it will eventually lead to him being captain. If he does not sign by the end of july i think we will punt him.

Paul67

I have been saying it for a while re Wigan, these are just two prominent examples. Sharner will be another one fairly soon i believe.

Pascal Chimbonda
Jimmy Bullard
Nathan Ellington
Lee McCulloch!

Although i accept every club will get a few like this Wigan have succesfully plundered various markets

Antsman
Mirel Radoi- not available untill 2012
Dorin Goian - not available untill 2010
Florin Bratu - not played much last season due to knee problem

The other one,Florin Cernat was available. Cernat is good and experienced player. He was on loan from Dynamo Kyev to Hajduk Split. Today he signed three years contract with Hajduk.

oldtim
i have told you to stick to the Henricks....

BT

WGS

The Romanian market has alot to offer and is not as inflated as the Croatian one has become so i think we should be looking there.

Owen Coyle at Burnley appears to be going down the british route bidding for likes of Jason Scotland and signing Fletcher and Mears. These guys give an idea where Coyle would of looked at Celtic. Not very imaginative

Zbyszek

Why not available, do you mean contracted?

Awe Naw,

I hear Bobo would be prepared to bail them out for a small fee...

Antsman,

That's what i was worried about with Owen as well. He's after Driver and McCarthy as well. He would have been better putting some money in getting Doyle rather than Scotland. I think Owen's bubble will burst. His link with Celtic worked big time for him as he got a lot out of Burnley wise regarding a new contract.

I don't thinl the Burnley team are equipped player wise for the EPL, he could do with a bit of experience guy's that have played that level and few experienced bosmans IMO. Look at Mick McCarthy, he went and got Doyle. I think he is a cracking player, had experience in the EPL already. He's learnt from his stints there previosuly with Sunderland. You don't strengthen big time and get far superior personnel you will struggle. I think Burnley will find that out.

WGS

Lest we forget Doyle snapped up by Reading for peanuts. However i would not pay £6.5m for him.

Burnley may well prosper, they are taking a similar route to Stoke but the lack of imagination is a worry.

Will he go the Moyes way or the Billy Davies way.........

Yes, Antsman. They are contracted.
Interesting. Portal transfermarkt values our friend Gabriel Tamas at 4 500 000 Euros. His contract expires today. He played in almost all games for Dinamo Bucarest in season 2008/09.
Still 19 minutes left for negotiations.

Paul67

Meant to incorporate this in my last post.

Re asset management. Are there any players in our current squad who we should cash in on now to best manage our assets?

E.g

Skippy......stock still on a high but potentially be found out soon

Scott B - Stock at a high, risk he could fall back like Aiden did plus he still can not pass accurately

John K - Rare spell of fitness would be ideal to offload

A Boruc - Stock falling, sell now or hope it recovers

Robson - Getting on, value dropping with age

D O'Dea - never proved it over a sustained spell but could, for now, command a decent fee

Just some hypothetical examples

WGS, no idea on that one.

Antsman, indeed.

Dino, deleted, language.

As expected, Burnley have captured Scotland and Hibernian striker Steven Fletcher. As reported earlier today on this site, the player had gone to Turf Moor to speak to Owen Coyle after the clubs had agreed a transfer fee of £2.8m rising to £3.5m depending on appearances. The 22-year-old has agreed a four year deal with the clarets for a club record fee of £3m. New Hibs manager John Hughes will be bitterly disappointed to lose the striker whom he had hoped would have stayed and worked with him at Easter Road. Fletcher still had four years of his contract to run at Hibs but has always expressed his desire to play in the English Premier League. The player was disappointed when Hibs blocked his move to Celtic in January but now he will move to Owen Coyle's (who was linked to the Celtic job) Burnley and their venture into the Premier League after a 33 year wait.

Fletcher believes he will grow as a player under Coyle and said: "As soon as I heard that Burnley were after me, and knowing Owen Coyle as I do, I thought this was the right place to develop my career. The opportunity came along in January for me to join Celtic, but Hibs did not think it was the right time to move on. When the chance arrived to come to the Premier League and play for a club like Burnley, I was glad they accepted that and let me come down".

It will be a huge blow for Hibs to lose such a quality player who scored 52 goals in nearly 190 appearances for the club and also scored the winning goal for Scotland against Iceland at Hampden in April's world cup qualifying match. If Yogi gets some of the transfer money maybe he can land a striker to replace Fletcher but I'm afraid they are few and far between of that quality. Coyle has already been in the transfer market today having signed Tyrone Mears from Derby County for £500,000. So hopefully Hughes can use the transfer money to enhance his squad and keep Hibs as top six contenders.

We missed a good one in Fletcher. I've heard a whisper that Federico Macheda will be offered a years loan deal with us.

Paul67,

Mr Z says Tamas is on free from tomorrow. Would we contemplate, considering we were after him last summer?

He's on a bosman, that's surley up Pete's street?

Zbyszek

Well with Goain going into last year we may get a deal. Radoi i know has had injury problems in the past tho

Naka,

Very impressive list apart from Atouba. Give him a miss mate. He's a bombscare at the back.

twists n turns

Left back - Thimothee Atouba, Hamburg
Box to box midfielder - Anthony Annan, Rosenborg
Creative midfielder - Anas Sharbini, Rijeka
Strikers - Marc Janko, Red Bull Salzburg; or Marcus Berg, Groningen; or Artem Milevskiy, Dinamo Kyiv

Not a player from the English leagues in sight. If we were struggling to finance it I'd have no qualms about selling any or indeed all of our 'prize' assets - Boruc, Caldwell, Scott Brown, McGeady or McDonald.

We need major change.

Zybszek,

Shabrini must be worth a punt at that price he is valued at. Whoever, get him for that price has won a watch i think.

Shikabala, all quiet on that front. Maybe we are working behind the scenes on this guy.

By Kojo on June 30, 2009 10:08 PM

excellent post Kojo. Imo this guy would be a real dud also and not the type of player that we need to improve. I think we should have a smaller squad of better quality players (I know they are hard to attract to celtic but imo there is no point have loads of average players) even if it takes the odd multi million pound gamble on an out of favour player (as long as they have a proven record and are young enough to have a chance of returning to past glories) a la sutton, hartson etc.

The likes of bale at spurs and reo coker at villa etc are players who were considered top class but have lost their way in recent times. Even dare I mention it steven davis (who I always rated at villa) was a revelation at rangers last season, just shows where a bit of class can rise above the mediocrity of the spl and even stand toe to toe with european teams. The problem with davis and mendez is that they cost money! real money not reported 3m signings who were actually bought for 1m.

This squad of quality players should be supplimented with a few journeymen and some top youth talent. We should be able to pla these young guys in the spl earlier if the likes of barca and arsenal etc can play them in tougher leagues. We should be a perfect proving ground for talent considering the weakness of the spl compared to other leagues and with top young players chomping at the bit and a core of top quality singnings (4m-7m quality) we could really have something to shout about.

My I am in a cantankerous mood tonight sorry if I have offended anyone

TinyTim.

You said at 8.10pm.

I'm sure Owen Coyle reads CQN.
After my post last night about Stephen Fletcher,he's read a well put article and said to himself,"this guy knows what he's talking about,I better make a move immediately,or Celtic will get him",

Fletcher will go on to be a £20m player.(I'm sick).

Did you get my answer to your mail last night.

WGS

Tamas was caught drinking during training in Feb - need to swerve him.

Also i suspect it is just his loan that is up, he only signed for Auxerre in 2007

Antsman
With Goian, yes.

WGS

I see that Tamas still belongs to Auxerre. Transfermarkt must be mistaken then. Dinamo Bucarest does not have money for transfers. Fernandez does not need Tamas either. Tamas agent is negotiating with Palermo.
Few weeks ago somebody (don't remember who) posted that negotiations between Tamas and Celtic failed due to non-football reasons. I doubt if Celtic is going to talk to Tamas again. It's gone I think.

WGS, fair comment. He'd be OK in the SPL where we go forward most of the time, but in Europe...

It's hard to find good left backs...as we have proved over the last few years!

Can Edward Ursus confirm that Rangers are in for this guy?

If true, it would be one in the eye for Celtic

Paul67 - only teasing about heid. If we get a good offer then sell, but only if we use the money wisely. I've never been a fan myself, being there in the flesh in lisbon against benfica has probably tainted my view of him though. Yeah he was good last season, but great, no - just a sign of the mediocrity around him.

SFTB

Had a "Hibernians" moment there! How are you amigo?

whats this Paul67 are you sensoring the masses now also?

WGS

I won't be suprised if Anas Sharbini goes for less than 2 000 000 Euros. Rijeka club is in deep **** ... troubles ( do the mods exist?). Few days ago their President promised to pay delayed wages untill the end of this week. Instead of promised 700 000 Euros he has found 100 000 Euros. This transfer is the only way for Rijeka for surviving.

good night cqners...

What was deleted? Honestly interested.

Please don't resurrect the Moderator nonsense again.

If Paul personally deletes posts then he explains why he has done.

If a Moderator does then Paul has made it clear that he would rather that they do not reveal their identity.

WGS

So spill, let us know how you did it. You posted your response to naka's list of players before his post appeared. Brilliant. Giving your opinion on a poster's list of players before they appear is the latest in a long line of impressive characteristics to make you Celtic's chief scout.

Can you imagine the scenario? Agent to PL, with WGS present at negotiations: 'So, Peter, I have a list of players for your consideration, let me start with...' WGS interrupts: 'Nah, wouldn't touch him.' Agent recoils in disbelief, leaving to tout his shoddy list of players to an unsuspecting club.

WGS, get your cv into Kerrydale Street. If I may be so bold... if you need an agent to discuss your terms...

Bloke, I had a technophobic moment and posted it twice in quick succession. Paul or one of the mods obviously spotted my mistake and deleted the first one!

Still hoping to get my first post deletion so I can hang about with the cool kids.

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend.. Petec.

I am glad to read that you are familiar with, the Financial Depredations that the common people all over, is now suffering from, because of the acts that have been performed on the World's Ecomomy by those Vulpine Manipulators, the N.M Rothschilds.

The more people who are aware of then and what they do..the bettah.

Although, it does not seem to matter, if one is aware of their dastardly deeds,or not.

They are impervious ,to all opposition.

What I have succeeded in doing..is taking advantage of their upsets.. and have thereby managed to turn a profit.

It has not been easy.. but I have been successful.

This Economic Downturn shall pass.. it always does.

I have been thru. Three or Four in the Past.

A few months ago.. I believe Last March of this Year.. I saw what I had been looking for..

Not to make is too Technical .. there is a Signal that Presages. the coming of the End of The Burgeoning UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURE, in the U.S.

It never fails not to be accurate.

It is simply..

One Notices that the INTEREST RATE SLOPE, as it is called..Pertaining to the U.S. Gov. Short Term and Long Term Bonds... Becomes POSITIVE..and remains thus.

This Slope, during an economic Downturn. which in Reality is caused by the RISING UNEMPLOYMENT.. not by anything Else..

The Slope. being in simple Terms, this..

If the Long Term U.S. Bonds are Paying .. LESS INTEREST
than
A SHORT TERM THIRTEEN WEEK, U.S. TREASURY BILL..

Then this is known as a NEGATIVE SLOPE in the INTEREST RATE CURVE.

I watch this Curve like a Hawk..

For it Told me when the U.S. was falling into a Downturn..as this Phenomenon takes place..

AT LEAST SIX TO EIGHT QUARTERS.. BEFORE, An ECONOMIC DOWNTURN TAKES PLACE..as it SIGNALS.. Signaling RISING UNEMPLOYMENT in Six to Eight Quarters in the Future.

So one is well warned of the coming ECONOMIC DOWNTURN

Just as it Signals a coming INCREASE IN THE U.S. in the UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURES, by showing an Negative Slope in the U.S. Interest Rate Futures

This Slope, when it Becomes and Remains POSITIVE.. meaning the The U.S. Bonds Are showing a HIGHER RETURN IN INTEREST, than The SHORT TERM RATES in the U.S. THIRTEEN WEEK TREASURY BILLS.

That Signals the Coming of the End of the Depression. .as the Slope Being POSITIVE, wil show that ... In SIX TO EIGHT QUARTERS... the U.S. UNEMPLOYMENT FIGURE SHALL HAVE TOPPED OUT.. and the Road to recovery shal be aborning.

This Interest Slope.. Turned and Remains POSITIVE commencing on JANUARY 2009.

In March, once I was certain that the Slope was Once more. POSITIVE..which it SHOULD BE as this is the Normal Slope.. which is POSITIVE.. Negative, being entirely Not Normal.

(Definition of a Normal Interest Rate Slope, is When the Slope is Positive.... Meaning... Long Term Bonds will Pay a Higher Interest Rate than Short Term Treasuries.)N.B.

I Knew for Certain that the Ending of the Depression had started.

In SIX TO EIGHT QUARTERS. .the U.S. Unemployment Figure would be clearly receding by the First Two Quarters of 2010.

Happy days shall then be a coming!

SO. now ye know how tae take advantage.. and to see when the next Economic Downturn shall take Place.. by simply watching the Slope of the U.S. Interest Rate Curve.. I figure the next U.S. Downturn shall take Place.. Approx in 20017, anyway... keep yer eye oan the U.S. interest Rate Slope... it wull tell ye when tae dump yer share holdings and get out.

I Dumped Mine, at what turned out to be the TOP of the Last Bull Market. .AUG 2007.

A whole Three Months Before,it was clear that an Economic Downturn was in Place.. The American Govt.. claimed that this Depression started.. Officially in Nov , Dec. .2007..Which was Patently a Lie!

However, I knew bettah... it was Aug . 2007k when foist it started.

That is the Kind of Information that is a big,Big, Help.. if one can be ahead of the Market.

I hope I have not confused you too much,pal.. readd what I have written and get Googling. and Watch the U.S. Interest Rate Curve.

Here is a Tip...always think..

UNCOMPLICATED...most people think ... Complicated.

Any Economic Downturn is BROUGHT ON.. which is different from. BROUGHT ABOUT!!!!

By a Rising Unemployment Figure..

The Employmet Figure tells all..

When it is Rising.. we are in a Downturn

When it is dropping , in a RECOVERY MODE.

Maks sense tae me.

Kojo.
yer pal..who is likes ye and is noo Gangin Hame.

Good Night Scotland.

Kojo.
yer pal.. who likes ye aloat.

A pretty long post and rant about how we have enough to be worried about with our own team rather than be watching diddy teams in the EPL and how this blog has not been satisfying my required celtic fix all summer.

Articles about some circus team down south and how grand it is for eto to stay at barca for football reasons have nothing to do with celtic. The only reason they are a circus is because we are commenting on them!

I also went on to say how the most expansive we got in discussions here usually had to do with teams whom we might be facing in europe and some diddy team from down south who we are discussing have not even qualified for the europa league!

I think the real nerve i hit though was when I said that Paul did not know what he was talking about if he really thought eto stayed for football reasons when we all know clubs will give him a massive signing on fee once his contract is up plus a nice pension to boot!

Criticism mayeb but worth being sensored? surely not??

Dino

I did not know that. As you say, horrible.

Awe Naw

It must be the colourful way you use the language. Look on the bright side, you are one of the cool kids :-)

Just wear a leather jacket, winklepickers and an insouciant expression

EDB,

Me spinning mischief ...you need to elaborate on that one ?

I am doing very well. Have had a good time of it recently. Nafos was over here with his bhoy for a few days and we had a blast. I had a long chat on the blower with Kitalba on Saturday for the first time and he made a great impression on me. I then went to a Thai barbecue had a wonderful night. On Sunday I went to my local highland games with my son and presented him with my kilt beforehand. He wore it with pride it fitted like a glove, so to his delight I gave it to him. He was the talk of the ball so to speak. I also had a great long distance chat with an Uncle of mine who would shame us all with his moral fortitude.I also noted that your daughter graduated and was as proud as punch for you. Kindred spirits this weekend.

I believe the children
are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be
Everybody is searching for a hero
People need someone to look up to
I never found anyone to fulfil my needs
A lonely place to be
So I learned to depend on me

I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can't take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

I believe the children are our future
Teach them well and let them lead the way
Show them all the beauty they possess inside
Give them a sense of pride to make it easier
Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be

And if by chance, that special place
That you've been dreaming of
Leads you to a lonely place
Find your strength in love

In fairness you go to the trouble of writing a coherent bit of dross and just because you use three of the letter in a heinous word you get moderated!!!

give me a break, and not even the hint of an appology

Can you belive the slant the STV website has put on the fletcher transfer. With not a whiff of evidence, they can pbulish this as the header

"Burnley beat Celtic to £3m signing of Steven Fletcher
Burnley have signed Steven Fletcher from under the noses of Celtic after agreeing a club record fee with Hibernian for the Scottish international striker".

So there you have it,signed from under our very noses.

Sack the board!

Bloke_109,

: ) :)

If i was ever lucky to be offered a job as a scout for this great famous club, then i'll do everything in my power to unearth brilliant undiscovered and discovered talent with in our means for this football club. :) :) I would be bursting a gut to make sure that the players being recommended would take us to that next level in Europe we so badly crave. Value for money.

You can have all the money in the world, but at then end of the day it's 11 against 11, and if you can build a team that have various talents, and each of those talents are moulded into a system and a team that will fight for each other and play for each other, then you have a chance against anybody. No money can buy that.

Good spot!

Welcome to Barcelona Quick News.

notthebus

I'm only surprised that they never took the chance to put the boot in to Sir David Murray as rangers lost out to Burnley who have re-signed long term Ibrox target, Graham Alexander.

He was due to be their new youth policy as well.

Aw Naw

Just that I thought you were going to have a wee break which wouldn't have been good for CQN.

Noted you had an intent to speak to your uncle. Glad it went so well.

Maybe not such a strange thing but since my wee mum passed away on the 4th of June the rest of the family have become so close. Culminating in the West End yesterday.

We appear willing to discuss what might have previously been tabboos but now we want to get things off our chests.

Not sure where Celtic fits into this.

kojo

A tour de force.................... the equivalent of a victory roll over the flight deck. Are you sure this applies in the Beach Cities.............Manhattan Beach and up to Palos Verdes and beyond? Or are you still working on the pension by writing off what is left in the company while predicting "Every man a King" down in ole Pasadena in the near future?

kindest regards

SFTB,

I once borrowed a pair of baggy jeans and pulled them down exposing my boxers and had one leg pulled up. I put my baseball cap on the wrong way and donned my Dr. Dre T-shirt and my girlfriends thick gold chain. I surprise the bhoy with it and told him we were going shopping.

"No wi me yer no" - said in a perfect Scottish accent with a disgusted look was what I was told. :-)

I´ll try the winkel pickers and jacket but I dont hold out much hope. :-)

So, according to some websites, Burnley have "Beaten Celtic to the signing of Stephen Fletcher"?

Strange that. When Celtic enquired about Fletcher in January, Rod Petrie almost burst a gun in his haste to inform the Scottish media that Celtic had made a bid and he had sent them packing.

So Tony Mowbray is more than two weeks into the job, and he has not made any contact with Hibs, unless both the media and Petrie were sleeping on the day he made his move for Fletcher.

Or did Tony just forget that, to buy a player, you first need to speak to his club and say something like, "How much do you want for your player?"

Only in Scotland.

Dino

As you said your post was deleted for language violation while your not fair post at 11:08 is still there.
At 11:47 were you joking or you were trying to find justification for yourself?
No need to continue it, mate.

And another thing. How come the headlines aren't about how "Burnley beat Real Madrid and Celtic to the signing of Stephen Fletcher"?

EDB,

4th of June is ma fathers Birthday whom I named my son after. He passed away on April the 1st before noon. It brought us closer together too. It sounds positive and familiar to me and if I may add healthy.

I´m definitely posting less these days. I will give TM my complete support and think he´ll be a good manager for us if allowed. I think all we are doing presently is heaping the pressure on him. He´ll need a season just to find his feet. I keep banging on about it but I´d sacrifice Europe and big name expensive signings more than likely signed in haste if we managed to get our youth academy going. I hope to see something brave and creative this year and play them in the league cup. At least it would be a sign in the right direction. Another expensive heartless injury prone mercenary is the last thing we need.

Magic And Loss - The Summation

When you pass through the fire, you pass through humble
You pass through a maze of self doubt
When you pass through humble, the lights can blind you
Some people never figure that out

You pass through arrogance, you pass through hurt
You pass through an ever present past
And it’s best not to wait for luck to save you
Pass through the fire to the light

Pass through the fire to the light
Pass through the fire to the light
It’s best not to wait for luck to save you
Pass through the fire to the light

As you pass through the fire, your right hand waving
There are things you have to throw out
That caustic dread inside your head
Will never help you out

You have to be very strong, ’cause you’ll start from zero
Over and over again
And as the smoke clears there’s an all consuming fire
Lying straight ahead

Lying straight ahead
Lying straight ahead
As the smoke clears there’s an all consuming fire
Lying straight ahead

They say no one person can do it all
But you want to in your head
But you can’t be shakespeare and you can’t be joyce
So what is left instead

You’re stuck with yourself and a rage that can hurt you
You have to start at the beginning again
And just this moment this wonderful fire
Started up again

When you pass through humble, when you pass through sickly
When you pass through I’m better than you all
When you pass through anger and self deprecation
And have the strength to acknowledge it all

When the past makes you laugh and you can savor the magic
That let you survive your own war
You find that that fire is passion
And there’s a door up ahead not a wall

As you pass through fire as you pass through fire
Trying to remember it’s name
When you pass through fire licking at your lips
You cannot remain the same

And if the building’s burning move towards that door
But don’t put the flames out
There’s a bit of magic in everything
And then some loss to even things out

Some loss to even things out
Some loss to even things out
There’s a bit of magic in everything
And then some loss to even things out

I really appreciate you giving out your trade secrets to get in and make a killing. And you might be right on the money once again, unfortunately I think the Credit Crunch was just for starters. You know the media is controlled by these punks, they are trying to entice people back into the stock/bond market to lose even more. There are no real green shoots that I can hear about. news with views
Lot's of good articles there about the whole subversion of the Good ol US of A and other topics, as you know when America sneezes etc.

I keep banging on about how Catholics and Protestants are both Christians, both have the basic fundamentals right about Christianity, so no real need for the divide and conquer the controllers exert over us. Christianity is seriously under threat from all angles, the above link will make it more apparent, ties in with Communism very nicely.

Kojo, I know very little about the financial markets and appreciate your knowledge and the fact your sharing it, I could have made a fortune if I had the money to put on Barclays when they tumbled big time. I told people to buy when their shares had dropped 75% in one day. And you guessed it, Rothschild link Check the wife

I don't consider most Rangers fans to be Protestants, they are just people full of hate, they obviously have no religion.

Paulantony,

Will we have a song prepared or stolen for our next big signing a La Big Jan before he´d scored a goal just because he´s famous and expensive or are we going to have hissy fits if one of our own youngster misplaces a pass. We´re losing our jungle identity far too fast for my liking.

HAil HAil

Aw Naw

Good that you told me that at 12:24.I believed you were Kennedy:)
Danke fur die zauberspruch.
Ich muss am Morgen um 7 Uhr stehen auf. Schlaf gut.

If we are to win back the title I don't think we'll find the answers in the SPL market.

Which is why S. Fletcher going to Burnley is not the end of the world. Although I take the point the lad's value will increase over the next few years.

We will need to look elsewhere Holland, Sweden or England.
And like it or not it won't be cheap.

Although we could finance new signings by selling a few of our better players just as we did in 1997.

Our team is crying out for experience. We need it in all areas of the park. I would be quite happy with a few 30somethings to some in and steady the ship and give us some much needed leadership.

A quote caught me eye at the weekend from one of the interviews with our man from Venus (Mark Venus).

"He describes finance as a 'hobby' and enjoys the challenge, as he puts it, of 'getting a lot of footballer for not a lot of money'. At Hibs that was achieved on a number of occasions."

"We signed Ivan Sproule from Institute reserves, paid £5000 for him and he was on £400 a week.
We signed Dean Shiels from Arsenal reserves for free and also David Murphy after his release from Middlesbourgh and had them on similar money.'
We signed Rob Jones as our big signing, £150,000 from Grimsby, and think he has given Hibs three years of great service and he's going to make them a profit in the transfer market.
We helped develop the footballers at Hibs and also WBA and I'd like to think we can do that here.' (Hopefully without the sell on?)

I was a wee bit surprised to find where he got those players, Institution is a little known team for me but to find a player from their reserves who later turned into an Ibrox match winner is good going. In saying that, given the chance I would have at least scored the equaliser that dark day in March.

That kind of buying and coaching for me buys time in any signing our management team make.

Murphy is a player I cant say I saw a lot of but they turned him into a £2m player. To an English team right enough but £2m is £2m.

Shiels is one who some raved about when he came into the Hibs team, I haven't seen enough of him.

I know there has been failures in players they have taken a chance on but all managers have that, we have seen the counter argument lists on here previously.

I can see us also buying a few un-heard of players which will unfortunately spark some of our support into reactions similar to the media's when we signed Lubomir Moravcik.

I will not complain as I have shouted about improving the scouting on many occasions.

In saying that I think the nature of our club means we need to buy at least one 'proven' player for real money this summer.

petec

I was interested in your posts to Kojo, liked the first one, hit 'page down' once I read about what I think was religion.

Potential destroyer of SPL defences!

Tictical_Genius

He looked to be coming on to a game for Man City towards the end of last season, but not being a big name he finds he is now down at the bottom of their striker store, under the shelf no less.

I like the look of him, but I think he has performed in the EPL, and that takes him out our current transfer league.

We need to find an unknown, who that is I do not know, guess I should like it that way?

EN

Agree that there is some truth to that, however players have moved from the EPL up here in the last couple of years, albeit for "them".

If we can bid £3.8M for Fortune, that shows that the money is there. Perhaps a £5M bid would at least get them thinking.

Hanif_Uno_Dihistri - petec has been doing this on CQN for some time. He never misses an opportunity to post links to his nefarious beliefs and I have crossed swords with him before on this.

In my opinion, there is absolutely nothing wrong with people posting links on non-football topics, but there is a big difference between that and constantly looking for every available opportunity to promote one's political or religious beliefs, under the pretext that it is relevant to a current discussion. It is called "ramming one's views down people's throats".

It stinks.

I will remember fondly towering performances against the huns who were genuinely terrified of him and him never giving a bad performance against them.

I will remember tremendous defensive displays against the likes of Juventus, Liverpool and Valencia to name but a few.

I will remember his tears as he lay prostrate on the turf in Oporto as Celtic reached their first European Final in a generation.

But most of all I will remember Stefan Klos in a CIS cup tie soiling himself at the site of an advancing Bobo and allowing a tame cross through his legs into the net.

Cheers and farewell big chap from the other side of the world. Whatever they say about you it was never dull.

I am an atheist and do not look to the Bible for moral guidance as it gives none and contradicts itself at every turn, thus making it's own teachings redundant ( "an eye for an eye" or "turn the other cheek" - both cannot be true )

I never mentioned Israel.

And I wouldn't use links to the Daily Mail as evidence of your broad mindedness.

My point is this - you post provocatively right wing nut job pieties on this site, but this is not the place for it. I usually assume Celtic to be a support with Socialist and egalatarian leanings, but I do not make assumptions nor post links to polemical websites.

I have no time for your knicker-wetting paranoid right wing views and I sincerely hope the aliens get you and give you a good probing soon.

He was the best CH at the club.He had his failings ,but more than made up for them.

I just hope that he doesn't end up at Ibrox.

Good Luck Bobo, you out didn't give in to anyone.

TinyTim -

Bobo at the darnel? Not a pretty thought - imagine the first corner we give away, and Bobo is ushered up the park. The ball is swung in by Kevin Thompson and Bobo strides through our defence. The final result is the ball in the back of our net, and our defence is spread around the 6-yard box like skittles after a "strike".

Morning CQN’ers,

I’m glad we never signed Fletcher, Celtic need goal scoring CF’s not link up players, I’m also not sure if Fortune will be value for money, he’s overpriced IMO whatever happened to using the eastern European market, there surely must be better value for money out there, the scouting network needs to get their act together.

re Bobo Balde, another failure by the board, when it was obvious Balde was going to see out his contract, the club should have used him instead of wasting what he had to offer, he was solid in defence and would have helped us towards 4iar.

Tiny Tim Bobo in a rankers jersey PLEASE NOooooooooooooo!

Aw ra best for the future big yin.

WGS did not rate Bobo, he did not want to play him. if he was on £10000 per week he still would not have been picked.WGS and the board would have loved to move him on because WGS would have been able to spend elswhere but he didn't want to go.

I agree he would have made a difference but you can't lay it all at the feet of the board on this occassion. IMHO

Ulster-Celt

Put it this way if I was manager of Rangers I would certainly be enquiring about Balde.

Lets just hope his pay packet will exclude them from any move.

I tell you what, something went badly wrong with the management of Bobo Balde’s contract, offering him a top wage at CP and then sticking him with the youths to train, I don’t think Gordon Strachan would have done that unless directed by the board (or someone on the board), I can’t see GS being so vindictive towards Bobo Blade just because he didn’t fancy him as a player.

I still say that IMO, Gordon Strachan was “influenced” by others regarding Bobo Balde.

Excellent marketing indeed, I thought the Maestro was back in the midfield for a minute! One small thing though, the subject of the email is 'there is a buzz around here' - not quite right! The website also says that the (current) home strip takes us through to 2010 - is that correct? I thought we were one a year with Nike?

Setting Free The Bears @ 10pm last night.

next year we plan to do the CQN Cycle for re-fertalisation. :o)

Risking our fertility surely must be worth a few quid in pledges.

Irrespective of what anyone thinks of Burnley paying £3M for Stephen Fletcher, you've got to hand it to Hibs for maintaining a business model that is hugely profitable.

In March 2006 they sold O'Conner to Lokomotiv Moscow for £1.6M, having been stung on the Caldwell and Riordan contracts.

Since then they have brought in £15.5 Million in top player sales, not including the myriad sales of lesser players. That's £5M per season gain, generated from 'intangible assets' book value of less than £1M.

Is Rod Petrie available?

Bobo Balde is not old enough to play centre half for Rangers

The problem with Hibs Business model is they never win anything.

I can't believe that, 24 hours later, people are still slaughtering the board and/or Gordon Strachan because of the Bobo Balde situation.

People know nothing about what went on behind the scenes, so when it comes to a straight choice between Bobo and the club, in the absence of any evidence, Bobo is the paragon of virtue and the club are a bunch of incompetents.

Well, we are all entitled to our opinions. I also know nothing about what was behind the story, but what I do know is that Bobo sat on his arse for 2 whole seasons and took the money off Celtic and the fans, the very fans who are fawning all over him now. He had various offers over the years from EPL clubs and he turned them all down. He is a disgrace and I make no apologies for saying that.

Good riddance Bobo. You'll have to start earning your wedge now. Shame that.

Oh and please note - This is not aimed at posters who have simply thanked Bobo and wished him all the best. That is fair enough. I am questioning those who blindly - ie without any evidence - jump on the we-hate-the-board bandwagon and canonise Bobo.

Let me put it this way. There is a comment a few posts up from this which praises the proposed new away strip and includes the following . . .

"excellent marketing (for once) by Celtic"

It's becoming a habit now. I ask you. Are we Celtic supporters or what?

Good to see the bobo discussion is still making the rounds, I wonder howmany will be longing for him half way through next season, will we be elevating him to legend status, soon?

I see Matt Le Tissier's consortium has failed to close the deal for Southampton.

Per previously, we're in the football business. Our main business unit is operating at capacity, with no room to expand. We've demonstrated that we know how to run a football club profitably and successfully. The business model is transferable.

Here's an opportunity to snaffle up a club that has a brand new stadium, one of the best youth acadamies in Europe, and a huge catchment area of fans and youths with only 1 competitor within 70 miles.

What's not to like?

TBB,
howmuch would you expect to pay?
if we are having problems with getting MrMcStay into his new job, imagine the hassle for your proposal, though its a thought.

The following is reported in a French website . . .

Which translates roughly as follows . . .

Marc-Antoine Fortune, long time target of English clubs Hull and Posrtsmouth, remains one of the priorities of Glasgow Celtic. Tony Mowbray, former manager of West Bromwich Albion, where Fortune has played since January, would like to move to Scotland. And two other Nancy players - Jean Calvé and Landry N'Guémo - are also interesting the Glasgow Catholic club.

Not one Nancy player, but THREE?

That's not the first time I have noticed foreign news reports referring to us as the Catholic Club.

Oh wid God the gift tae gie us
Tae see irsels as ithers see us.

Bobo Balde is an unfinished case for the media as demonstrated by Broadfoot's recent article. They are clearly frustrated at the lack of pickings and will hope for the denouement shortly after he leaves. The agenda is at the core of this present preoccupation is to simply, tease Tims and IMO should be consigned to history.

Tom

the Spanish press in particular quite commonly refer to us as los escoceses catolicos and them as los escoceses protestantes. I am not sure if it happens outside of the countries that have been traditionally predominantly catholic.

Gordon Strachan to his everlasting credit won 3 SPL titles in a row, during that time he kept Bobo out the team. Who cares who he kept out the team whilst winning titles? No one, which is why he got clean away with not playing Bobo. Had he blew it in his first season the clamour from the fans to re-instate Bobo would have been overwhelming imo. Anyway, thanks for the memories big man.

I dont see the usual good luck wishes for bobo on the official site, no thanks nothing, you'd think there was bad blood eh

Granted there are a few strips of red tape... but fundamentally, Southampton and Celtic WILL NEVER MEET IN COMPETITION.

Price wise, there's no firm information. The club owes £27 Million, but I can't see a net book value. The adminstrator's job is to maximise recovery for the creditors. I reckon he'd take 30p in the pound. Football club values have plummetted in the past 12 months - see Newcastle, last year £300M asking price, today £60M. Ditto West Ham.

Pinnacle have pulled out of the deal for Southampton, reckoned to be worth around £15M, but there is nothing to indicate how this is made up.

Ball park? £10 Million plus a dividend on future earnings. The alternative right now is total liquidation.

What do we get? Well, a chunk of new borrowings, and a 10 point penalty for next season, set against the value of their properties, activities and player book. In addition, a platform to truly test and develop the current 'development' squad, a cracking youth academy, and if run properly, a slice of the Championship and possibly Premiership income in due course of time.

Worth exploring I'd say.

I understand that the Bobo debate has resurfaced because it is the time of his leaving and the Herald's chief idiot has done an article on him but it really has been done to death on here over the past 4 years. As Zetabhoy said, we won 3 titles with only fleeting appearances by Bobo. I don't think his absence was the reason we lost last year. He did well when he did well and didn't when he didn't.

Please don't anyone resurrect the other two hardy perennials, songs and poppies.

Paul67 and all,

What about a move for Benni McCarthy. He's wanting to leave Blackburn?

Just been on the official site looking at squad list.
JVOH is not there , neither is BB but Paul Hartley is ???

Does pre season start today or tomorrow

Paul67 and all,

We'd be a better option that Cela Vigo surley?

don't forget MON v WGS

UC

UC

I hadn't dared mention that one for the absolute fear of what might happen.

Incidentally, where do you stand on MON v WGS? Personally, I think that......

TBB,
I'm always for exploring good ideas, and I think its a good idea, but if the/we became as sucessful as you hoped for, then there'd be a good chance we'd meet in future competitions.
I also agree it would be a major investment, but I'd rather use the money on players, then again I would probably accept the risk and go for it, yer right its a winner, whats keeping the board eh :o)

WGS - more chance of getting Benny from Crossroads

Bobo may have to go to G51 because he owes Kenny Mcdowell £375,000 in unpaid debts from playing Kerplunk!

That's one of the reasons why he wasn't played; it's not that he wasn't fit or willing it's just the management couldn't be sure he wouldn't throw the game to repay some of the money.

Kerplunk! is a growing menace to the integrity of British sport; with players able to run up huge debts in a short period of time to the international criminals who run these games.

Evil men like the Chinese triads and the Duke of EAdinburgh.
