Football's status symbols

| | Comments (190)
You know you live in changing times when one of the world's few tier-one managers joins a club you only know non-football news about.  World Cup winner and Chelsea boss of last season, Phil Scolari has joined Uzbekistan champions, Bunyodkor.

Bunyodkor are the current club of star-feigner and World Cup winner, Rivaldo, who signed on for $7m (US) per year in 2008.  They were only formed in 2005 and are sponsored by gas company Zeromax and currently building a new 35,000 seat stadium.

None of this is about the football, of course, Scolari and Rivaldo are no more than status symbols.

Weather now bright and sunny, forecast for tonight is more sun, scattered showers. Tomorrow fair and sunny.
The village we live in is called Crosshaven and is big into sailing, this weekend it's the traditional sail festival and the harbour gets packed with old style wooden boats and yachts and the salty sea dogs cram the boozers talking horlicks - bit like me on here sometimes! Anyway it all kicks off at 4.00pm with a BBQ on the seafront, all the pubs compete for the best spread. The missus and me will try them all!

I've promised myself I wont post after a bottle of Chateau "Nyaff" du Pape, but I think I'll need to get the missus to hide the keyboard!

Interesting thought about 1967.

I don't think we would have won more but we would have definitely beaten Feyenoord in 1970. It's debatable whether we would have beaten AC Milan in 1969 but I think we would have knocked out Kiev in 68. After 1970, I don't think we would have had the beating of Ajax, though.

Paul,

I posted this yesterday, but I don't think you saw it.

Would it be ok if I asked the blog for help with a research project I'm working on?

This is brilliant !

Off toipic but anybody fancying a week's holiday in teh west of Ireland, there's some really cheap deals with this lot.

200 Euros for a week is typical. I've stayed in the ones in Dingle and they're top notch. I don't work for them either!

I've been working too hard all week and haven't been on here much. What's the latest with Kano and are his family near the amount to bring him home?
BTW, for the holdiday break above, the deals are only for the next month or so.

I see Mark McGhee is still touting himself for the Celtic job, the next time it rolls round.

Nice to see him to be so sure about where he ends up next.

Is that Bun-yod-kor or Buny-odkor I am sure Borat has deadly enemy wthin Uzbek team. Off to my scratcher. Watched the French beat the AB's in the pub tonight. The recession just got worse. New Manager. You were lucky.

mickybhoy..from the last post

Have to admit that Our GK has given me a few heart in the mouth moments this year, maybe a few to many. but in his current form I cant see us getting anywhere near as much as we could have got for him.

I have heard a few tales of Bobo and the reasons for his exile..I'm going to go with old simple..he's a nutter!! reason! I just seem to recall screaming Bobo put yer hands down..awww **** you ****ing idiot!!! quite often.

and yeah I knew "wee big Eck" was looking at Bobo but I think they just signed a CB for a Club record transfer fee the other day so that might kill Bobo's hopes for that move.

Press up here should have fun with Bobo's book. ..shudder!!!

i take it you read the report in The Times

he was clearly after the Celtic job and it would appear was considered for it

i must say that i was surprised that most of his interview upon getting the Aberdeen job related to his disappointment at not getting the Celtic job and to being a Celtic fan

i can`t imagine you guys will be very impressed with that

The year (1969?) we were beaten by AC Milan, Milan reckoned we were the best team they beat (fall on your sword Billy McNeill). They hammered Ajax something like 5-1 in the Final. We were a great team in those days. AC Milan scored against the run of play at Celtic Park, after we had got the draw in the San Siro. Inter Milan beat us on penalty kicks around that time too. I think Ajax were the only ones who really did for us and that was in Amsterdam. We still managed to beat them in Glasgow. We were Class and we knew it (and still some questioned our manager!!)

Do think Real Madrid will now turn their attentions now to Tony Mowbray?

We all knew that the Celtic job, had he been offered it, we would still be looking for a new manager.

Were not blind or stupid, but he is at Pittodrie now, and I suggest that if he want's to make a go of it, then he drops all chat of Celtic until such times he resigns or is sacked.

Watching Celtic over the last two seasons, the only nutter IMO was the man in charge in the dugout. a close second to his performances in the dugout was his performances at press conferences, were he tried to be someone he was not!! as billy Connolly would put it, windswept, interesting and witty, his continuing gaffs and inability to connect and communicate with the Celtic support played into the hands of the sewer rats in the Scottish media, who continually drove a wedge between Manager and support, his idiocy with the press also bordered on the description of nutter.

Cue bandwidth meltdown!

Without appearing to be condescending - the stronger Aberdeen and DU are the better for scottish football

I wasn't surprised WGS selected his best mate for the Job at Celtic, it was typical WGS,it lacked imagination and clarity, indeed any intellectual thought whatsoever, DD asked WGS? who do you think should get your job? quickly WGS replied my best mate, honest he's pure dead brilliant, Motherwell were never asked by Celtic for permission to speak to their manger FACT!!

PeteTheBeat, the figure that Carolyn mentioned on the video was an arbitrary one. Until it's professionally cost-ed, no-one knows how much is needed. The $50,000 Aus that is mentioned is for initial remedial work. Ie, widening doors, the building of a "wet room" etc. Their long-term financial needs will be on-going. Our target is to get that remedial work done as soon-as and to get Martin home.

For reasons that I can't go in to on a public forum, we're still a long way off.

Not meaning to be deliberately vague, so please forgive the obfuscation.

PjDali:

You get my reply on previous blog?

...is for you and me!

Anyone taking bets on how many friendlies we have agreed to play WBA to get big Mogga. 4? 5?

Paul67....

I'm sure you'll be asked this loads so I thought I'd get in first ;)

Are the reports we paid £2m true? If so, why when I thought we weren't obliged to pay anything?

And is WGS the only one who (might) agrees that if we are willing to spend £2m on Mowbray, we could have at least asked the question of Martinez?

Paul67,

on previous thread on previous day, there was no malice in the question. Just straight forward inquiry, I trust your sources and your info. It does seem to be a bit drawn out, but negos can be.

If it is a case of the appointment comming on July 1st, as per Gary67's comments at the end of the last thread, because of being a new year or the end of the old year and reduced buyout of Mogga's contract then I am prepared to wait it out.

I am sure that once the appointment is made Celtic and the new manager will hit the ground running.

By Kojo on June 12, 2009 3:06 PM , this was from the previous thread too!

Paul67 did reply to ma question under the guise of GPU, I have faith in the SSM that he will deliver, but I appreciate the response.

Welcome MOGGA!!!

Good luck to you!

and here's hoping board give you the backing they should!!

Hail Hail

Though nothing on Celtic Site, the official WBA site confirm they've given permission for Tony to speak to us "after the clubs agreed in principle to a £2million compensation package".

So is the 'in principle' bet significant - i.e Celtic say "we don't actually think we have to pay anything but if we're wrong and we do then it will be £2M. meanwhile can we talk...."

Jobo

Apologies to Naw Am Urny Bhoy in advance -

Charlie Nic on Sky being a total tabloid trumpet.

Extra for Grant and Venus as well.

This is the most money Celtic have spent in one go in about 10 years.

If it goes through...

SSN are also saying we are paying a fee for Venus and Grant

Paul67

I hope reports of £2m are inaccurate

Ironically given your post, we could of used that to add to a decent wage to perhaps tempt the likes of a scolari or a rijkaard

Forgot how much I hate Jim White.

Antsman

Why would you want Scolari?

Havnae posted since black sunday I am over the moon about mogga!!

I think the club will be galvanised and am particularly happy for a certain supporter who got inside info a while ago and put 2grand on at 3 to 1!!!!

Paul 67

Isnt this a fisrt for a club to pay compensation when none is legally due or is a case that TM did refuse to resign?

C'mon the hoops!!!!

Interesting. Nothing agreed yet, despite SSN talking about the "appointment" of Mogga.

Officially, it's nothing of the sort.

Of course, could be semantics, and part of the elaborate dance, but could we be about to see a surprise.

Etims hinting at as much this morning I see...

Congratulations tony, welcome back you are A SIGHT FOR SORE EYES, MINE!!! TWO SEASONS THEY HAVE BEEN AFFECTED!! I for one am delighted with this appointment, we can pick holes in the appointment if we wish, we are at our best, when club, fans and team are UNITED, as at the end of season 2007/2008 proved, the tommy burns 3iar league win. It is time to come together, oppose our enemies, heal as a family, get behind the club.

Celtic agree £2m compensation for Mowbray

West Brom have given Celtic permission to talk to manager Tony Mowbray about the Parkhead vacancy after agreeing a compensation package, the English club have confirmed.

Empics

Mowbray: On the verge of a move.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell targeted the Baggies boss, a former Celtic defender, as the replacement for Gordon Strachan who departed three weeks ago.

A possible appointment had been held up by West Brom's insistence that Celtic would have to meet their £2m compensation figure.

The figure has now been agreed in principle, and will rise if Mowbray decides to take West Brom assistant manager Mark Venus and first-team coach Peter Grant, a former Celtic team-mate, with him to Parkhead.

I think everyone does that mate!

Thank Heavens that's settled. Not before time. He's not whom I'd have chosen but I shall be delighted if I'm entirely wrong.

If its Mogga best of luck
hope the fans dont get on his back
if he doesnt win 3 in a row or qualify for europe
like our much maligned previous manager Gordon Strachan achieved whilst having to downsize and up against a hostile media

May I be the first to say.

Has TM not got the finger out and signed anybody yet. Does he not know we've got important games coming up?

There! That should save 700 posters asking that question over the next 3 days.

jim white - a smug little face you would never get sick of slapping.......

WeeGreenMachine,

His copresenter read out an email from a Celtic fan critical of Mowbray. Perfectly fair points I thought (though not ones I'd agree with).

White rocks back in chair, rolls eyes "How can he say that? I mean how can hge say that?" he asks in mock exaggerated surprise. Code to rest of UK "These Celtic fans- idiots the lot of them I tell you!"

He would never have the nerve to criticise a ManU or Liverpool emailer. Never.

Such an arrogant, talentless, so-and-so, I'm amazed a professional outfit like Sky continue to employ him.

2 f**king million!! shocker

Will get my support as any player/manager of Celtic would but f**k me do I feel low right now.

WD40

I went to school with the guy who owns Cronins bar in Crosshaven, well, his son. The guy is a monster prop forward.

BankieBhoy

Are u from Cross all your life?

From prudence to sheer extravegance if the reported £2m is correct. A massive gamble and potentially going to be shaved of Tony's transfer budget

Andy

Why is it a shocker? That we have gone for Tony or paid £2M to get him?

Murdoch auld and hay>

if he doesnt win 3 in a row or qualify for europe
like our much maligned previous manager Gordon Strachan achieved whilst having to downsize and up against a hostile media

WGS made it easy for the hostile media with his idiocy, Tony will have it tough from the start, he takes on WGS nemesis, the man with no surname, Watty who by far had the upper hand on WGS may not be the most brilliant of managers, but as he proved with Scotland in Paris and his run taking Rangers to a EUFA cup final he can frustrate and get results against flamboyant attacking teams. However, me personally I'm gonna be positive and believe in Mowbray.

Peter Grant's "once a Bhoy" interview was repeated on Celtic TV last night. With his impending arrival, I payed more attention than I normally would.

Have to say I was impressed with his demeaner and attitude.

Welcome to all three of our new Bhoys (if indeed that's how it turns out). A big job awaits.

Hope we can still find a place for Lenny though.

We are going to pay money for Peter Grant???????

There`s the end of the transfer budget! Liverpool and Chelsea are getting a clear run at Glen Johnson! :-)

celt for life....

Both I should imagine. I will give him my full backing when in Celtic Park and allow forums such as this for discussion but for now a few questions.

Would he be in contention if he never played for Celtic?

Is he any better than Strachan.....and most importantly, is he any better than Walter Smith?

Cork accent is nothing, I have a mate from Tip, he runs away with his words, I just nod.. o)

I think MOGGA will be outstanding for us playing as they say "the Glasgow Celtic Way."
Every Celtic supporter has to get right behind him. We dont have millions to spend but I will wager the product on the park will be 100% better given a bit of time.

It'll be interesting to know what this is costing the club.....

What happened to our planned strategy of TM resigning and Celtic cannily getting their man for minimal costs. hhmmmmmmm

Can't believe if we've just paid WBA £2mill for Mr Mowbray's services...utter madness in my opinion for us considering we're becoming less and less renowned for spending that kinda dosh on a player.

Question

If TM does come and he has us sitting on the edge of our seats again and enjoying some great stuff but only wins the League Cup is that better than last season.

Pablo
Thanks for the update.

I would like to welcome Tony Mowbray to Celtic . I believe he will bring the style of football that we celtic fans have been missing.

However I would be extremely disappointed if Celtic were to bring in Peter Grant in place of Neil Lennon. Peter Grant is a nice guy don't get me wrong , But Neil Lennon is a true winner and thats what you need in the dressing room.

Geebee1978

He may not have been considered had he previously not played for Celtic, however having previously been at Celtic he will know the pressure required to win every domestic game and i see this as a positive

Time will tell if he is better than Gordon, by better i assume you mean winning trophies. Gordon lost the plot last season by failing to see what everyone else could see, and ultimately cost us the league. I gave up on him after the St.Mirren cup defeat, I said that day he should have left or been sacked.

As for being better than Smith, again i assume you mean win more trophies and IMO i feel he will deliver.

Delighted if he becomes manager.

geebee 1978,

Why does he need to be better than "Walter?"

All he needs to do is put out a team that can beat the also-rans - something WGS failed to do for too much of last season.

Turn two of those draws against Hearts, Dundee Utd, ICT, Motherwell into wins, and we'd have won the league last season.

IF Mogga is the new manager (no white smoke yet) I'll be happy with it. His teams play without fear and play good football.

He'll be good enough to win the SPL next season and who gives a stuff about "Walter?"

Does anyone know who this refers to on eTims?

"one other manager as we speak outwith Tony Mowbray and given very little publicity by the mainstream media who is currently in talks with the Celtic board"

ItaliaBhoy

Yeah I'm shocked he still has a job as well. How many times has he been caught saying things off Air. there's another one I cant think of his name but how they are still working for the press is beyond me. I see Nicholas couldn't help him self either.

You are right there, he would never dare say anything against the big four down there..the man is a Git.. not quite of the standard of Keevins..but close!

First poster

Well boys i see most of you are delighted that Celtic are about to pay 2 million yes 2 million for a second rate manager I hope he does not repeat the performance of 2005 when celtic play Rangers in the first old firm game as you have to go out and try and win the game and it will be an appointment that will delight Rangers management team and supporters alike it will be interesting to see if the 13000 celtic supporters who have not renewed their season tickets will after this exciting news and before you all give it the place will be better without you as you have to various posters some celtic supporters have principles and number 1 is never support a manager that lies down to rangers Hail Hail

St. Michaels Bhoy....

Because "Walter" is the man he'll be up against, both in the transfer market and on the pitch. It was Smiths ability to beat the "also-rans" while we were busy drawing that cost us the league.

I'm not saying he's better or worse but it is hugely relevant and will define his career at Celtic.

Bonzo67

ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

BT Yahoo main sports page reporting that Celtic have been given to go ahead by West Brom to speak to Mowbray.

It would appear that compensation has been agreed, it's now down to whether we can do a deal with Mogga, and his backroom Staff.

That god Charlie Nicholas is not in charge of looking after Celtics money.

His need to have a dig is ridiculous.

I am not one who is against former players being critical of the club ,if it is due.Charlie seems to want any excuse to have a go.

I think that Mogga will do well.
He would not have been my first choice, but the club needed a change after the last two seasons under Mr Strachan.

Lets hope we have decent funds to allow him to take the league back from The Darnel.
Let the merry go round begin.

Who will go?
Who will stay?
Peter Grant or Neil Lennon .Who is the biggest Tim?

7 Fish and 4 Steaks - Good to see you're still here. I hope the departure of WGS & Pendo, coupled with the imminent arrival of Mogga doesn't mean an end to Cog Diss. I wouldn't like to think that you'll disappear a la Mike Yarwood when the Milk Snatcher succeeded Sunny Jim.

Hello Bonzo,

Who would you have went for?

I note with interest the words 'a £2m compensation package' - what does that actually mean?

I think that those who assume that we have just parted with £2M up front are probably mistaken.
Remember, both sides had painted themselves into a corner on this - faces have to be saved by all parties.

Here`s hoping that Tony can bring back some of the fine attacking football that all the posters on this forum love to watch. But first off, can he mibbe`s get scouting for a left-back (3 seasons & counting!), a halfway dependable centre-back, a strong holding midfielder & a decent striker??

So Tony, welcome to the finest football club in the world.

We`re right behind you! Do us proud!!

ibleedgreenandwhite

i take it you started supporting celtic after 2005

geebee 1978,

In 34 out of 38 matches next season, "Walter" will be nowhere in sight.

Despite taking 7 points to our 4 from derby matches last season, "Walter" would still have been in second place if we'd beaten Hibs and Hearts. He won more against the also-rans than WGS, but both teams threw away an awful lot of points against them.

"Walter" just ain't that good.

Mogga only has to worry about Celtic, and let "Walter" worry about us.

PF Ayr,

Reports are suggesting that celtic have agreed "in principle" to pay 2m.

Now, I have no legal training, can you enlighten me to what this might mean

jvoh67

Bonzo,
Lets all be honest here .Very few Celtic fans could have picked MARTINEZ out of 2 man ID parade. He has done very little of signifigance as a a manager other than winning the English 3rd division.I dont see where he scores over TM but I'm prepared to to be convinced that he is a better bet.

TLOPG

St. Michaels Bhoy....

Believe me, I hope your right but your argument on last season started with the word "if" which straight away makes it a conditional. We didn't win those, Rangers did and the table didn't lie. Mowbray will be judged on how his team beats the also rans and whether or not his side gain more points against them that Smiths side.

I hope he does and he may well but it was a question well worth raising on a Celtic discussion board.

bonzo67

good

Nothing worse than a towel chucker. Remember Walter doing it when he was going for ten?

I may be wrong, but was Mowbray not managing Hibs in 2005. Didihe not do all he could to secure the best possible outcome for his team. See that integrity. Awful eh

P F AYR i dont believe Mcghee was a plan A contender for the post as manager, i agree he was spoken to by DD as Celtic went through the process, only as a courtesy to our previous incumbent WGS who imaginatively had named him as his successor? as i sated before Motherwell were never approached and asked by Celtic for permission to speak to Mcghee. Mcghee was desperate for the Celtic job, and would have waited for 100 applicants to go down before him, DD obviously released him from waiting last week.

celtic get green light to speak to tony mowbray

CELTIC today confirmed that they have been given the green light to speak to Tony Mowbray with a view to appointing him the new Celtic manager.

Celtic Chairman John Reid said: "We can confirm that we have reached an agreement in principle with West Bromwich Albion Football Club and have been given permission to speak to Tony Mowbray and his backroom staff.

"These are complex but important negotiations and we can assure our supporters that we continue to aim to get the right man for the job in the right way."

Squire Danaher,

Surely you mean Bonzo should MARCH on back to Betfair

Headlines
'Celtic forced to shell out 2million for Mogga...PL in disgrace...'

Surely we are not going to pay gratuitous compensation after all ? And 2m at that ! I'm sure someone will be on very soon to say 'our man' has withstood West Brom bluster and all we are going to pay is 2 pence. Wait and see. Only a matter of time.

backtheteamCSC.

Looks like it will be Tony Mowbray now.

He wouldn't be at the top of my list of potential managers for two reasons. Firstly his European experience is limited to two losing ties. I would have liked a manager with far more experience of continental competitions given our upcoming qualifiers.

Secondly he has limited experience of the pressure imposed by the expectations he will have on his shoulders at Celtic. At Hibs there were few expectations. At WBA there was pressure to get promotion, but then a fight against relegation which is very different. He now has to adapt to a situation where pretty much every game is must win and a crisis is only two bad results away.

Having said all of that, I will be 100% behind the big man. He has great potential as a manager and hopefully we will see him grow into the job.

Tony now has a lot to do in a very short period of time. Players to leave and new players to come in. A squad to familiarise with his training/ coaching methods and his preferred tactics. And all before the season begins in earnest.

Good luck Tony. Bring us success and good football and you will join the ranks of the Celtic legends.

TLOPG

Good point mate. We have needed a pointer in the dug out for years.

bonzo67:

Can I ask you...what was he supposed to do under the circumstances that prevailed at that time.He was possibly , privately, gutted....but he was doing his job , was he not?

bonzo67 - 2.56PM

That's twice you've spelt Celtic with a small 'c' now - almost gave you a straight red for your first offence when you wrote at 2:46 PM - 'when celtic play Rangers' but was lenient since it was your first post.

Consider yerself yellow carded noo, once more and yer off!!

geebee 1978,

why does he need to be better than walter???

because we need a 'coach' whom has the experience to develop players into better ones!

you know! like hitzfield did with lambert.

Why does he need to be better than "Walter?"

i dont want a short term fix of delivering next seasons championship (though it would be great) im looking for a new chapter in our history where the days of paying for success is only a small part of the picture!...

the days of muti million pound signings on a regular basis are gone now! and simply could not be sustained,a new approach of scouring for rough diamonds and 'hot prospects' are on the menu i think, and you know what? im happy with that.

the satifaction of developing the mcgeadys of this world on a regular basis would give me a great sense of satisfaction..but will remain a dream for now.
One thing for sure is tony mowbray doesnt have the experience to do just that!

his teams play without fear and play good football?
28 losses out of 36 last season cements that 'playing attacking football without fear' doesnt win you games if anything it shows me his lack of tactical diversity.

All he needs to do is put out a team that can beat the also-rans - something WGS failed to do for too much of last season???

mowbray after adding £16m to a already championship winning side only managed 1 win away from home in the entire season...granted against a fellow relegated 'also ran' middlesboro

naming diddys such as mcinnes, mcghee and levein to name a few has simply lowered your expectations in our clubs pursuit to fill our hotseat.

mogga is not the answer..we are bigger than that!

ex celt..tick! fancy fitba..tick! celtic minded playing the celtic way..tick?

why not go for yogi hughes...he wont cost £2m compo!

Bhoy FTC Hell 3.04

indeed, and in a stridently protesting fashion, ha ha

Bonzo67 @ 2.46.

Unless, you can furnish verifiable and Incontestable, Proof, to me...

On Naming your Impeccable Source for the Figure that you quoted for the number of Celtic Season Tickets that have NOT been Renewed...

Tim Bucktwo...lol (spelling)!

And yes you must have E.S.P. or something, in other words I do not want to make the same spelling mistake as you...lol!

OttoKaiser - Thanks for your response. I grew up in the same parish as Felix and in fact, we were altar boys together under Father Winning, later to be Cardinal Winning. Last time I saw Felix he was running a bar in Hamilton. His brother Patrick passed away at a young age so my thoughts are with his parents at this time. RIP Felix

jvoh 67

i take it if you were a manager and you played the huns you would instruct your team to not cross the halfway line what a celtic man!!!!!

GORDON

MON and WGS were hardly Euro veterans but done OK- NON?

Welcome home TONYthank god CELTIC PARK will back to normal with the the fans right behind the BOSS cant wait to see his style of play we will have a new player on the wing next season McGeady and an Brown could also be the plyer he should be any thank god WGS has gone as he cost us the leauge no more crazy tactics

Bonzo67

are you ten

geebee 1978,

I've no problem at all with you raising the question. Just giving you my opinion!

For what it's worth, I don't think "Walter" is anything to worry about, as long as we get ourselves right.

Gallowgate - Grow up.

kojo

ask paul67 he will confirm this and i thought the deadline for season tickets was 15/05/2009??? and we are still able to renew today

Embdy know when the transfer winow opens?

I am sitting here thinking about Rangers - yes, I know, I need to get a life.

What will their response be to our new management when it arrives?

Do they still have to sell before they buy? I have a feeling they will keep the core of their squad. But the question is - is that going to be enough?

I note a comment above about 'Walters' abilities. He is a decent manager, he can get teams believing they are something when they are not. His kick and rush power plays when plan A doesn't work are not, however, the stuff of managerial legend.

Whoever comes in needs good new players. The rest will take care of itself unless he is an utter balloon.

The wait continues......

I better cut the grass or something.

Toodloo the noo gherkins

Since source of the Mowbray announcement is the official WBA website
this represents the line that Peace is putting out.

He is a massive ego and I think he has just blinked.I remain to be convinced that the Board caved in to all his demands

Anyway, £2m or not I welcome Tony back to Celtic.

Hail! Hail!
Trust the Board CSC

I can rembember leaving Fur Park that day and all the punters were saying "That bassa Mowbray cost us the League"
We done ourselves in for gods sake.

jvoh 67

Bonzo67

That answer, is not accepable, I am afraid.

Case closed.

bonzo 67

Are you in a bad mood or something?

I can sense a lot of anger in you, beware anger leads to the dark side!!!!!

AND ASK? how much compo would the swiss f.a. demand if he hasnt already got a get out clause in his contract?

Ottmar Hitzfeld (born 12 January 1949 in Lörrach, Baden-Württemberg) is a German former football player and manager, nicknamed der General ("the general").

With a total of 18 major titles, mostly accumulated in his tenures with Grasshopper Club Zürich, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, the trained mathematics teacher is not only the most successful German coach, but also one of the most outstanding in the history of the game. Twice he was elected "World Coach of the Year". Also, besides the legendary Ernst Happel, he is the only manager to win the European Cup/UEFA Champions League with two different clubs.
3 Swiss Cup (With FC Aarau in 1985; with Grasshopper Club Zürich in 1989 and 1990)

2 Swiss Super League (With Grasshopper Club Zürich in 1990 and 1991)

7 German championships (With Borussia Dortmund in 1995 and 1996; with FC Bayern Munich in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2008)

3 German Cups (With FC Bayern Munich in 2000, 2003 and 2008)

2 UEFA Champions League (With Borussia Dortmund in 1997; with FC Bayern Munich in 2001)

2 Intercontinental Cup (With Borussia Dortmund in 1997 and FC Bayern Munich in 2001)

2 World Coach of the Year (1997 and 2001)
Voted Bayern Munich's greatest coach ever

why are we LOWERING our expectations? WHY? WHY? WHY?

WishawTim....

I mentioned Martinez as a possible Celtic manager after we lost to Rangers. He got Swansea promoted and only just missed out on a play-off place when security from relegation was the aim. His team punched well above their weight; have Mowbrays?

jvoh67

i can only assume that the agreement is on the compo figure should we decide to go ahead with the deal

WBA must have refused us permission to speak to TM unless the compo figure was in place first

imo it will now be a done deal

as one would have to be particularly naive to think that we haven`t spoken to TM before now

ThisLand: 3:06

I is reely embarissed aboot the way a speld that wurd. I hav bean going to klasses at nite skool fur to help me with ma speling and the teecher sed ah wis doin gooder than the wumman nixt to me.
Noo am not so shure.
Rain rain ( ah meen Hail hail...see this wethur !!).

WishawTim,

Fair point. Actually I made a very similar criticism of his lack of European experience when Gordon Strachan was appointed.

Every appointment has an element of risk about it. But European football is so important to our club, both financially and in terms of our reputation. I would rather see someone who we know can operate in that environment rather than someone who might be able to.

But as I said, the debating time is over and Tony Mowbray will have my 100% support.

I'm no a Bonzo I'm a Tim

Welcome

Anthony Mark Mowbray

You have my full support to sell any of the current squad to help fund your transfer targets.

A Lee

GB,
I agree TM's CV aint oustanding .2 fourth place finishes in the SPL, 1 Championship win in England 1 relegation. Its OK .
Maybe his time has come.
We cant recruit at the very top mangerial wise whilst we are in the SPL whether we like it or not- thats just the way it is

I am happy that Tony Mowbray is finally going to be the man. But I still believe the delay was due to Celtic talking to another target, ie Roberto Martinez. Swansea also wanted 2m for him, so for whatever reason, that has fallen through and Plan B - Tony Mowbray has prevailed.

If we hear today that Martinez is finally to be paraded by Wigan, then I will be sure of my suspicions.

Hail Hail and welcome Big Tone.

Hello everyone just got my computer back as it had blown up about 3 months ago.Looking forwards all your post again ,oh how much i missed my pc

Pauloantony

Would you also agree that Paul Le Guen's CV was very impressive before he arrived in the greatest wee country in the world?
CV's don't manage football clubs

Re: Bonzo

He is a six-county based hun who regularly infiltrates celtic-related threads on Betfair football forum, posting infantile attempts at doo-doo stirring.

Like many of his kind, he lacks the intelligence to understand that there are several on here who are also on Betfair.

Bonzo, the games's up son, go away.

Youwouldnyneedtobeclarencedarrow CSC

Gordon_J....

While you're correct that European football is important to our finances, the main thing is being in the CL. The difference between group and last 16 is small. Getting in the groups requires us winning the league so from that point of view winning the SPL is the bread and butter.

Seeing as we now struggle to compete with clubs from Greece, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine as well as the "Big Five", I'm not even sure what our targets in Europe should be anymore.

pauloantony

agree...can't get excited by us appointing a manager who just his team relegated and might.......just might have learned a lesson in how NOT to lose most weeks.

Celtic deliver another mediocre piece in their mediocre jigsaw,

ibleedgreenandwhite

yes i am angry leaving aside 2005 what will mowbray bring to celtic i agree he will play attacking football but i fear there will be no steel in the side in old firm games you have to win the battle before you win the war and i dont see that in mowbrays make up

celtic get green light to speak to tony mowbray
Paul Cuddihy
CELTIC today confirmed that they have been given the green light to speak to Tony Mowbray with a view to appointing him the new Celtic manager.

Celtic Chairman John Reid said: "We can confirm that we have reached an agreement in principle with West Bromwich Albion Football Club and have been given permission to speak to Tony Mowbray and his backroom staff.

"These are complex but important negotiations and we can assure our supporters that we continue to aim to get the right man for the job in the right way."

MOGGA IT IS THEN.

im so disappointed! but back my team i will.

but i have a bad feeling.

new article posted.

bonzo67....

No steel in Old Firm (sic) games. His Hibs side went to Ibrox and won 3-0....twice.

squire danaher, thanks for clearing that up

PF Ayr, ditto

P S do you think wee BARRY will be his first signing it will save Barry a few quid buyiny his family Celtic season tickets

celt for life on June 13, 2009 3:19 PM

yeah but the difference is experience!

plg bought 3 titles at Lyon! his CV was exaggerated by meediah hoose

Hitzfield? world coach of the year...twice! says it all.

HE COACHES PLAYERS INTO BETTER PLAYERS! thats the difference.

you only need to look at one of his not so famous students mr lambert to see that.

i wonder how mogga will improve mcgeadys game with his wealth of experience and tactical know how?

mediocre absolutely mediocre! the huns will be laughing the now

bonzo 67

Fair do,s mate,if thats your thoughts on TM then your entitled to them, what i would say is that you favoured martinez for the job,to me his style of play is similiar to tony,s,in that they want to play attacking football,i dont think steel is at the top of their agenda.

So i dont think you can use a lack of steel as a reason to beat tony over the head with,it seem s to me you just dont like the guy?

hail hail

squire danaher

i am no hun i am a cousin of kanos that is one insult too many have i to agree with blind faith that i am happy with mowbray??? just because you think he is the man

I don't think that Big Jock Stein had such an impressive CV when he joined us...but he certainly did when he left.
Give TM a chance for goodness sake, it's no more than he deserves.
The last thing he needs is a divided support BEFORE he's even started.
If he fails , he wouldn't be the first...if he's successful however......
Hail hail

bonzo67 on June 13, 2009 3:28 PM

thats it in a nutshell mate..

mogga is the man to take us forward

problem is....where is the facts to substantiate such a claim!

i am gutted!

we reek of mediocrity...the huns will be laughing thiers heads off.

why do we press the self destruct button every time? why!

lionroar67 smith had already done the dirty on his country n eck in charge by paris, hampden yes paris no, and do you realy think smith so much better than strachan? at the end of the day the players we had were more than capable of winning the league but grossley under performed IMHO

pauloantony

Agreed that Hitfeld is a great manager but he has worked almost always in a German speaking and professional environment

We need someone who knows the ins and outs of scottish football

We are not blessed with the sums of money required to field a team of European class players - would Hitzfeld be capable of working with what we can recruit ?

We should have won the league last season - Rangers were playing to their potential far more than we did
( I know that Edward might disagree )

The huns will be weaker next season - though not as weak as they would have been had we won the league and denied them the money !

So we need someone who can get more out of what we have and be prepared to bring in what we need to beat the hun

WGS certainly identified what was required
" Bigger - stronger - faster "
Unfortunately he never actuall delivered these players

My one doubt about TM surrounds his willingness to be pragmatic and do what is required to win

It is all well and good sticking to your football principles but in Glasgow being second is nowhere

Welcome back Tony - now lets go and get the league back !

pauloantony

what claim??

don't think that Big Jock Stein had such an impressive CV when he joined us...but he certainly did when he left.

i think it was steins growing reputation home and abroad that attracted celtic to naming him as manager!

dont even!

im waiting for the whites and kellys to be named as 'new directors' in a double press release shortly!

absolutely fuming!

i once had absolute faith in DD and PL ...not anymore! ive had it!

new thread guys......

bonzo67 on June 13, 2009 3:37 PM

the claim from all the pro mowbray posters on here!

im agreeing with you mate! absolutely mediocrity

soldierbhoy @2.55, tell me which posters complained about the biscuit tin who are now complaining about the £2m???

paulantony

i am with you i do hope we are wrong but my gut feeling says he not the man to take us forward when i heard Martinez was in the frame i did a bit of research and i liked the look of this guy i will look with interest at his managerial progress.

st Michaels bhoy, or to put it another way, if we had won the last OF derby we would now be champions.. No?

Not for one MILLISECOND do i believe that Celtic will pay £2m. to WBA.
I have known my club for far too long to make that mistake, & this particular leopard is very much a cat which won't change its stripes...or in this case Hoops.
What I do see is a statement which allows a bit of face-saving on both sides, & I look forward to the benefit match with the Baggies, which will be about the height of what they will get from this particular deal.
More importantly, Welcome Home, Tony.
You are a giant of a human being & a natural match for our great club.

Habemus managerum? Has the white smoke been spotted over Parkhead?

Mowbray it is then. He will get my support, because he will be managing Celtic. I love Celtic. I think there'd a few fholk here that do to.

Obscure I know but Woodrow Wilson, said

“We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter's evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they bring them to the sunshine and light which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true.”

I hope Tony is a big dreamer, we have had such men before you know.
