Forrest Gump football

I liked the shape of the Celtic team before kick off on Saturday.  Five in the middle should have guaranteed lots of the ball, which Celtic had, and lots of chances, which Celtic didn't have.  There are a few observations worth making.

Aiden McGeady possesses an ability to change the pace of the game like no one else in the Celtic team.  This draws opposing defenders out of position as they strive to compensate for his potential, leaving space elsewhere in the team.  Celtic are much easier to defend against when he is absent.

Scott McDonald had no right to win the ball at his goal.  At less than 5'8" tall he should be easy to win a header against, but Scott possesses the strikers' ability to find space in the most crowded places.  He has now scored in three of Celtic's four league games, and converted an even more impressive header in Moscow, but I am not convinced he is suited to play as a lone striker.  If we Tony wants to start with McDonald, perhaps a 4-4-2 would be better.

I noted early in the season how central midfield, a regular concern of mine, looked better than it had for years.  This has been less evident in recent weeks and was clearly not the case on Saturday.  The productive thrusts into the box that Petrov, or even Burley, gave us, bringing goals and disrupting defences, have been replaced by random running.  I got this notion in my head some time ago that there was a touch of Forrest Gump football in the Celtic central midfield, where an unseen "Run, Forrest, run" sign sparked enormous athletic effort with little understanding.

I don't know what to expect from Zheng Zhi but hope Tony has signed him to bring some football-intelligence to this area of the park.

Well done to the nine cyclists who peddled from Glasgow to Edinburgh yesterday raising funds to prepare the ground for Kano to get home.  Yet another stunning effort from each of you and those who contributed to the cause.

The Celtic community in general, and the CQN community in particular, no longer have the ability to surprise, but they always inspire.

Could not rsist podium place

podium. moi?

dam and blast ye

Close but no cigar.

Nevermind a contribution of goals, against United and previously against Hibs we didn't have anyone who could play the killer pass from midfield.

A shame and probably an embarassing oversight too that we don't have our recent signing available on Thursday.

sorry damm

I haven't posted since the game on Saturday and haven't had a chance to read many posts but here's my thoughts:

We started off badly and got worse as the game went on! My big worry from Saturday is that every substitution made us worse; by the end of the 2nd half we were clueless.

Another worry I have re: the manager is his public castigation of N'Guemo - if that was justified (and it may well be), then what about some of the poor performances we've had from Caldwell, Brown, MacDonald and Maloney this season? If N'Guemo's performances are worthy of public criticism then what should have been done to these estbalished "stars"?

Last season was one of the most depressing experiences I've endured as a Celtic fan - week after week watching us playing so badly we failed to take advantage of an awful Rangers team slipping up. Everyone at Celtic (Board, manager, coaches and players) need to take a collective responsibility to ensure the same doesn't happen again this season. Saturday would suggest there's still plenty of work to be done.

I would agree with the Forrest Gump analogy.

Headless chickens was how i described it to my old man.

I was a little perturbed at the initial team selection and subsequent changes and having thought about it iam none the wiser.

Not that i think he is anything special but Flood was in the running for teh Arsenal match and now we find McGinn,Caddis and Mizuno ahead of him.Chooses also to give Crosas his first start and plays Brown up front.

Sammi was getting pelters at the match for not coming in from the left but it was so obvious that was his instructions with Maloney through the middle.

Iam all for thinking out the box and looking for plans B & C but i think this was too many surprises.

I think his initial thought may have been to keep Brown out the hustle and bustle of midfield to protect his ankle.

I miss Celtic TV as you could analyse the game through the week without worrying about dropping points .You nearly always seen a different game

Getting back to Saturday, I actually thought that Crosas looked ready for it, always willing to take the ball, but once he had it, no great movement in front of him. I also thought he was hampered by both Brown and N'Guemo playing fairly static positions and not making runs that would have created space for themselves or others. That having been said, once Crosas left the field, I'd like to have seen Paddy McCourt coming on to offer something a bit different. His ability to run at and across people would maybe have created more chances in the final half hour.

Lubo1977,

I have to agree with you re N'Guemo. There are worse (repeat) offenders still getting a regular starts with us. As for the tactics, I applaud Mowbray for attempting to make us less predictable but without players that fit the system he's trying to implement, it's doomed to failure.

My feeling at present is that this is merely season 2008-09 part 2. Same personnel, same frustrations, same results.

Surely the missing link in this analysis is the loss of MD?
His early season partnership with LNG was the big difference compared to the run in last season.

One issue not covered is the use of wide players / wingers who offer little effort to the defensive workload of the team.

Consequently if we play two in the middle they have their work cut out defensively.

SB + AN Other = Tumbleweed in the centre of midfield where teams like DU have then proceeded to pass us off the park.

MD + LNG = Better coverage but the basic problem was still evident.

Hopefully BTM uses the next 4 months to thrift down the ridiculous numbers of MF we now have on the books.

WF / BR / KM / PMcC are too good to be sitting in the stands, use or move on.

With SKY stepping up the hype in anticipation of the first CL games, it's once again hitting home how awful we were in those two must win games at the end of last season.

Those were the real CL play offs.

its amazing for 2 years in a row our midfield is crying out for someone to grab it by the sruff of the neck, Barry Robson getting fit at the right time me thinks.

Some interesting comments about gary caldwell in the last few weeks, no suprise to me, i thought 4 years ago gary and stephen were both bomb scares defenders, Only one bomb scare for TM to find out about and change now ie Caldwell.

If ever were were to see how far our downsizing need look no futher to sat team/bench ie mean Neil mcginn followed by Mizuno as our attacking midfield and Maloney upfront yes forest gump indeed.

4 years ago when someone mentioned Robbie keane i laughed and said "no way" but now we really do need to spend big money on one player, someone with drive upfront.

i have never seen since the middle nineties a celtic team that was so Cheaply assembled and physically weak as that team on Sat.

on the bright side the FOD are positively mince :)

Sydney Tim,

This is easily poorest side we've had since the early days of the TB era.

We don't have anywhere near enough quality.

Good Point Paul. Dont agree on the intial midfield formation though. I was suprsied that Crosas and N'Guemo were together against a team who were looking to contain us. Is this a return to the GS "We need to be wary of them"?? When have we ever gone with a lone striker at CP? McDonald scored a great goal and well done to him. Maloney was peripheral and looked tired. His free kicks are poor and he didnt add any threat from outfield play. Saturday was a day for McCourt. Methinks that day will now not come. As far as Forrest Gump football I agree! We were poor, had no shape and looked disjointed throughout with no attacking flow albeit against one of the better teams in the SPL. However TM mention of international games is reminscient of excuses for after Euro games. Our squad has no depth and is simply not strong enough or good enough. Absence of McGeady should not have such a massive effect as it does.
Goes back to what is now a blatant lack of investment........ and thats another post!!

Saturday was worrying.

The initial team selection was a bit odd, & the substitutions strange, especially in asking Sami to play wide on the left. Why?

Playing scott brown in an attacking role worked well away against Dinamo, but to do so at home against SPL opposition- again, why on earth was that done? He is emphatically not a goal scorer, or especially creative, & our formation left us with one, repeat one, guy who was likely to score in the team!

I agree with Lubo1977 re N'Guemo- what was that all about? He has been one of our better players up to this weekend, & whether its coincidental or not, had i thought his worst game in the hoops after the manager was publicly critical of him.

Hopefully, this selection was a blip...

Georgiebhoy67
Have to agree , Saturday was like watching one of WGS teams from last season. If you remove Fox and N'Guemo in effect it was. Stadium capacity and season book prices is the only difference that sets us aside from the Dundee united's of this world these days.
Talking to a few guys around me and some mates on Saturday , i think there could be thousands of empty seats for the Europa cup games.
I think our greedy board might just have gone to the well once too often for many.
Lynott67

lubo1977

Interested on your thoughts on the public criticism of LNG.
Not up to speed on the details but it seemed a strange motivational tactic from BTM.

Interesting to see how that plays out.
I think the manager is still trying to sort out the squad.
The phoney war of the CL games has now given way to the SPL slog and the EuL lottery. Possibly the early adrenaline rush has started to subside.

Finall, our collection of MF continues to amaze, apart from the under employed quartet mentioned earlier we have the following bubbling away in the wings:

1) Last minute addition.
2) Interesting Jan 2010 arrival.
3) Ex Hibbee on the fringes, playing as guest.

Lynott67,

The board have passed around the begging bowl once too often IMO. We are all very aware of our position in European football but if it wasn't for the fans considerable financial input, we'd be Dundee Utd.

Time to get more quality into the first team was January this year. Then again in the summer. Neither happened and we're paying for it. The coffers will take a mighty hit next summer if we don't see this trend reversed.

Georgiebhoy67 apart from SB we have a physically weak weak team, lightweight in midfield, seemed to me every 50/50 ball was picked up by DU. 1st time i have seen Mcginn and i know we should give him a chance, but we do not have a big midfield to support him, would have thought landry would win 50 50 balls but was disapointed in him. I remember TM hibs side, full of skill and promise but never killer instinct, would have thought hew would realise we need midfielders who are strong.
only his 1st season tho he does need a few t/f windows, if you remember the team gordon inherited, hartson, thompson, petrov, big big players, look at what TM inherited, 4 years of under investment, 4 years when our clubs turnover/profit was greater than ever. Board do have to help Tm in his Goal,

i am afraid do fear Europa cup, Hamburg top of their league, Europeans teams will be physically strong.

' Mama always said the transfer window was like a box of chocolates.

You never know what you're gonna get'

Forrest Gump is Owen Coyle's favourite all-time movie.

First time on since last Friday and have not read any posts yet but wanted to vent a little.

Thought we were very poor on Saturday, was very concerned that we felt the need to play five in the middle at home.Especially since from very early on it was obviously not working, subs only seemed to make things worse.Did
we really need an injured Scott Brown playing off one striker at home?

I think it was supposed to be a 4,2,3,1 but it never materialised.

So without pressing the panic button here are my thoughts.

If we are at home play two up front.
We need a play maker in the middle and that ain't Scott Brown.Al the Naka doubters must surely realise what he gave us now!!!!!
We need to pass the ball much much quicker.
Hate to say this but the team needs an old fashioned target man that will give us an out ball when things get tough.

Good debut for young McGinn.
Full backs with Arthur were the only bright spots on the day I would give no one else pass marks.

All in all we do not seem to have a team shape and that is very disappointing,I had hoped that Tony Mowbray would get more from the existing players whether he bought anyone or not so far only Aidan seem to be better than last year.

I also hate to say this but I watched the huns on Saturday in the pub and they were poor for most of the game however, worryingly, when they did play they passed the ball better and faster than us and created more chances.
Motherwell (or the dalziel bar stewards as I prefer to affectionately call them) had more possession but the huns still had something like 8 or 9 shots on target.

A bit concerned to be honest.

Am I getting too old and cynical?

An ojutcry on here about not having signed a proven goal scorer and we're linked with Robbie Keane!!! Deja Vu or what.

Harry wants to sell the Russian not Robbie and we have about much chance of paying Robbie's wages as..............

I thought that Niall McGinn made an impressive debut on Saturday. A little slow starting admittedly, however he continually put in quality deliveries into the box. I'd like to see him given an extended run on the right and switch Aiden to the left - wee Shaun will have to get the finger out, I honestly don't think he has progressed as a player.

Was it just me or did I hear the dulcit tones of a banned song at Fir Park on Saturday. It wasn't the racist Famine Song but that other ditty that UEFA kicked up about - someone tell me I was hearing things.

TinyTim from last week.

Your story regarding SMcM and the offer from Ipswich.
I found your comments very interesting as it seemed to explain some of the reaction to the story when it first reached the papers.

Lazy man request / not following CQN at the weekend.

How did your story develop?

Was there the usual volley posts from the usual suspects rubbishing your info?

****************************

One related element to the story was the recent criticism of MAF by our current member of the "CareintheCommunity" CSC.

To be fair he has had his doubts since the DM games but the volume and number of his complaints seemed to increase substantially over the past two weeks.

Could this be disguised criticism of BTM?

Cannot do it directly at the moment, but MAF provides a suitable proxy to get your point across?

This is very concerning, did we not all laught at the H**s when Walter played 1 up front at home in the SPhell?

THe board might tell us that we cannot compete with English championship teams in wages but we still have the capacity to blow evry other Scottish team away, why are we not? I know its not that simple but we got knew manager, who we headhunted? Or was he the only won who replied?

ah, deepthroat releases a name on the back stairs again.

must think we are mugs

I see we're being linked to another Japanese player. A cynic would think we're more interested in selling replica jerseys than actually improving our first team.....

Rt Rev

I would love a player like robbie keane but it probably wont happen unless we give spurs brown and maybe mcgeady.

But very interesting once Lawell gets his skates on the spin he creates does engender stories but once again fool me once etc.

The issue is we lack quality thankfully so do the huns.

It's going to be tight and it might not even be a two horse race considering how poor we and the huns are.

But worry not the balance sheet is fine.

Hail Hail

Henriks Sombrero - if we sign another Nakamura-type talent, who cares if the board also have a nefarious ulterior motive to make the club financially successful?

Henriks sombrero

A cynic would think we're more interested in selling replica jerseys than actually improving our first team.....

Are we are now a fashion retailer we should be told!

Henriks Sombrero.....Which Japanese player have we been linked with this time?

CELTIC have been linked with another Japanese player - and he comes with a recommendation from Shunsuke Nakamura.

Yuto Nagatomo is currently making a big name for himself as a defender with FC Tokyo.

But it has been his performances while playing alongside Naka with the Japanese national team headed to next summer's World Cup finals which are predicted to make him the next J-league player to move west.

Nakamura has been so impressed with the rising star, who just turned 23 at the weekend, he is telling anyone who might be in the market for a young defender that they would have no regrets if they took a punt on Nagatomo.

advertisement
Reports in Japan claim Celtic are already looking closely at him, though no formal approach to his club has been made to date.

Although only 5ft 7ins, Nagatomo is equally adept operating on the right or left and is comfortable with either foot.

He plays most of his games at right back where he can can use his pace to get up and down the field to good effect.

During the summer transfer window, Celtic were in the market for another right-back to provide a challenge to Andreas Hinkel.

Several names were linked to the club. But the window closed without any business being done in this department.

However, the Parkhead club are already looking ahead to the next window, which opens in January, and have concluded a deal to bring midfielder Ki Sung-Jong from FC Korea for around £2million.

With captain of China, Zheng Zhi, signing on the final day of the summer window and joining Japanese midfielder Koki Mizuno in Mowbray's first-team squad, the Asian contingent at the club is growing, and so are the commercial opportunities it brings.

Nagatomo played for Japan throughout their World Cup qualifiers, and came up against Celtic striker Scott McDonald's Australia in two of those games.

He also caught the eye playing for his country in a friendly against Holland in Amsterdam last midweek when his athleticism was a problem for the Dutch.

Nagatomo - who already has 15 caps - only made his debut for FC Tokyo at the start of this season, but the club are aware of his desire to follow Nakamura in moving west to develop his career.

FC Tokyo value him at around £1.5-2m, but a good showing at next summer's World Cup Finals could push that figure up much higher.

Eustace
Exactly the feeling a lot of us have, Mr Lawell has fooled a lot of us on more than one occasion.
Theres not much to choose between ourself and the hun at present. Throw in their 10-12 point MIB bonus per season and i feel we have a real tough task on our hands reclaiming out title.
Only my opinion mind you.

A 5ft 7ins defender shouldn't be high on the agenda. He can't play in the centre and we're well covered in the full back areas for the first time in years.

Does he score goals?

Twists n Turns - I agree with you we should look to bring quality players in the next transfer window. Ideally, we shouldn't need to be at the January sales, but this isn't an ideal Celtic squad, yet.

Don't give me that "Black Country" nonsense, anybody who talks like Timothy Spall from 'Auf Weidersehen, Pet" is a Brummie in my book.

Anybody who says otherwise is like people from Lanarkshire claiming not to be Weegies, or people from Edinburgh claiming they aren't effete social climbers. Or people from Airdrie claiming not to be bampots.

'Forrest Gump football'

For the game this week Id go for the following

Boruc

Hinkel, Caldwell, Loovens, Fox

Maloney, N'Guemo, Vhman, McGeady

Samaras, McDonald

Never seen our new player play but Id guess he would be more creative, better at passing, tackling and shooting.

Georgiebhoy67

The only question lawell and the balance sheet worshippers will ask is can he sell jerseys.

Trophys who needs them

Hail Hail

Correction it's not Robbie Keane, it's Bobby Deane. He has scored 4 goals while on loan at FC Zurich (while still holding down his job as a postman!)

Eustace P Merryweather

I’ve not looked in much since returning from the game on Saturday because I knew what it would be like on here with all the doomsayers, but I thought by Monday morning it would be a bit more rational. Just logged on and the first comment I see is yours, what’s it about? Oh yes it’s the balance sheet again!

Can I just ask you a favour, gonnae take a day aff. Go for a walk or go swimming or something, all that negativity in you can’t be doing your health any good.

I know this sounds like I’m having a go but I’m just fed up with you and others constantly moaning and never having anything constructive to say.

EPM,

Sadly, I think you're not a million miles from the truth.

Hi Eustace P.... are you any relation to Senna the Soothsayer, from the Up Pompeii series!.

One for the older bloggers..

Gies piece and change the record..

Henrik's Sombrero

Good to see we are looking at a new RB.
Even better if he can raise our media profile.
AH looking more and more like good business for Sevilla.

Anyways, well done to the cyclists for their efforts on Sunday.

It looks like we're going to be in for another bi-polar season.

I thought the tactics were right[ up to a point] but that the personnel used were wrong- Mcdonald is neither mobile enough, nor brutish enough, to play up front on his own. We just seemed to lose our way in the second half and can have no real argument with the result.

Early days I guess, bound to be a few teething problems.

bhoybhoywalter

How about Pearl and Dean they are always good to watch

A LEE

Jamsie
Go on then and cheer us all up because what i and many others witnessed on Saturday was extremely worrying. Then again maybe some of us are just too hard to please.

Did anyone win the half time draw? I bought a ticket but was having a pie at half time!

Hi all,
signing in for the first time and posting, so please go easy on me!
Watched both the h**s game and our game at the weekend - and feel there is still a need for positivity amongst us to continue apace. I for one am thoroughly relieved to see the ball along the ground for vast sections of the game, and although agree with a need for a genuine pacy goalscorer and a real need for a Mjallby impersonator, still feel we are adapting to Mowbray's style and shape.

Yeah he's experimenting a wee bit - but Dundee Utd are a good side, as they have proved over the last few seasons, and Saturday was no disgrace. Haven't we made the best start to a season in a long time? Joint top and having already played away at Pittodrie and Easter Road?

For what's it worth I think we'll get better over the next couple of months, as we continue to blood youngsters such as McGinn, and Mowbray to decide on his best XI . Obviously hoping we improve dramatically enough to pump they-who-must-not-be-named come early October!

Finally, as something of a mission statement - I'm no happy-clapper or mineshafter, but enjoy the posts of almost all on here. Best Celtic site by a mile, thanks to all and Paul67 for providing the platform for us all.

Has anyone seen the highlights on the BBC Website yet??? Now after yesterday's chip wrappers I wished to have a look again at the build up to our goal on Saturday, given Craig Levin's rant after the game how it was never a foul that led to the free kick from which we scored. Being at the game, I had not seen anything amiss, the linesman (sorry assistant ref) had flagged more or less straight away so had not given it a second thought.

When I saw it, it's a clear hand ball. Now what Levin saw, only he can say. But what got my goat (excuse the pun) was commentator, stating that it was controversial decision and if it led to a goal plenty would be said. Excuse me?? It's a clear hand ball. So why state its controversial when it is not?? Apparently, handball is now defined as a outfield player literally catching the ball given that anything else is now controversial.

I assume his paymasters had made him state this but when you get a goal chopped off for offside when its not and a defender punches the ball out and no penalty given, that's the main talking points. Not a clear as day hand ball, with the correct decision given that leads to a goal where our main striker was unmarked. Perhaps Levin should look at his defenders rather than imply his team were had done by.

Anyway, it's back to the paranioa ward for me....

Saturday galvanised a few really niggling concerns I have about us.

For me there are two main things lacking in our team. The first being a settled experienced leader on the park. For me we do not have that. We have some young guys, some guys who think they are better than they are, but nobody to lead them by example. We don't have a player the team can look to grab a game by the scruff and lead by example. The last guy we had who could do that was Lennon. There is nobody for our young guys to look up to or to organise. I think this is where the Forrest Gump football Paul talks about is coming from.

Secondly, and most importantly, our striking department is a mess. Anybody who watched us last year would know the reason we did not win the league is that we did not score enough goals. BTM has done well addressing the left back problem but I think he has been too quick with the Fortune signing. We needed a goal scorer. We didn't get one. With Fortune's injury we will now have to face the start of the Euro campaign and the first OF game with a weaker striking pool than we had last year. It seems like for the past 9 months McDonald has needed 3 good chances to score 1 goal. Against Rangers and in the UEFA cup we may only get one good chance. Sadly we do not have anybody in our team I think anyone could say with confidence that the solitary chance you get against decent opposition would be capitalised upon. That worries me.

BTM's substitutions worried me also. Which was compounded by the fact that said substitutions made hee haw difference to the game. Add this into to the very strange criticism of N'Guemo and I am starting to think BTM did not have the best of weeks last week.

Some people may say it is knee jerk reactions to poor results and these will happen however we should not be so ineffective at home against Dundee Utd. That should not be happening.

Can we not just forget about this Robbie Keane stuff
Even we gave spurs the transfer fee or 2 or 3 players in exchange (mcgeady and brown have been mentioned) we could not afford his wages.
These guys earn 2 to 3 times the salary that celtic can afford and they will not settle for less.
The reality of it is that if robbie keane was leaving spurs (where he is club captain) he would probably sooner go to portsmouth or bolton who would be able to give him what he wants
BIG MONEY

Lynott67

Please don't think for a minute that I'm happy with what I've been watching for the last few years, but a sense of realism and maybe the odd positive comment from the doomsayers wouldn't be bad.

It just seems to me some people are only happy when they've got something to moan about, and to go on and on about the balance sheet in every comment you (not you) post is a bit much.

Lubo77- Derren Brown won it ;~)

madmitch

It was a strange one. I was reading the quotes from BTM on LNG in the Sunday papers and I thought "that's a bit harsh". The manager sees the player every day and will have an idea of what will motivate him but considering he's not said a peep on some of the poor displays by our more established players, it did seem a bit unfair.

Can we not wait and give the new Chinese and Korean guys time to play a few matches before slagging them and the board off. If it is purely a ploy to sell jerseys and they are taking up a salary which could be better utilised then fair enough, criticism will indeed be very well deserved. If however they can both play a bit and enhance the first team then it'll be a good bit of 'business'.

I posted this earlier but no one responded, can anyone confirm/deny the following;

Was it just me or did I hear the dulcit tones of a banned song at Fir Park on Saturday. It wasn't the racist Famine Song but that other ditty that UEFA kicked up about - someone tell me I was hearing things.

The Billy Boys can be heard on the BBC highlights.

At 4.00 mins to be precise.

luckybhoy- they've also got a new song expressing their displeasure with the hairy @rsed kilties of the Tartan Army.

Tobi Legend

Thanks for that, I watched the game alone on sky before venturing over to Celtic Park. I don't buy the Sunday papers and didn't hear anything on tv or radio - now there's a surprise.

Tobi Legend

Which end of the ground?

Dontbrattbackinanger

I'm 'off air' for 30 mins or so, can you tell me more and I will pick it up later.

cheers

Spirit of Arthur Lee,

Exactly what I was going to say - in a Motherwell v Rangers game we can automatically jump to conclusions that all the bigotry was coming from the h*ns....

Luckybhoy.

I was posting whilst watching Der Hun and someone posted something about said banned song so don't think you were hearing things...

sorry, can should say can't

Jamsie,
You don't make a silk purse out of a pigs ear, i feel this is what Mowbray is being asked to do.
With Fortune out until Nov/Dec i dont feel we have enough goals in this team at present.
Its ridiculous we find ourself having to go with Sami and Skippy up front until Fortune returns.
McGinn apart, i didnt take too many positives from Saturday.

Once again a big thank you to all those who pledge a donation or sponsorship for the CQN Cycle For Kano team. I will email you tonight detailing how you can pass your doantion or sponsorship to the Kano fund. Thank you all once again.

Sirmoanalot, if you're lurking.

Sorry I missed ye on Sat. Good picture of Billy Connolly though.

Some good craic in the London rd club with CQN'ers. The lads walking from Tyneside arrived in the club about 1pm, they were all doing the John Wayne impersonations, I felt their pain.

Good luck with the job search.

Did the number of free seats on Saturday surprise or worry anyone
after all Dunddee utd is usually one of the better matches in the season

Georgios Samaras,

Is he the Greek equivalent of Wayne Biggins?

Scott Brown,

Is he the noughties version of Stuart Slater? Paul67 when you mentioned Forest Gump did you have Brown in mind?

Scott McDonald,

what is the stars - I agree with you. looks very much like a plant to me. Low SB Sales, early in season, team looking a bit low as intial TM optimism dulls somewhat. Roll out the "Robbie Keane for Celtic" story!! Now why on Earth would a story like that, which has been reported in English papers also be doing the rounds, when we are nearer to Transfer window just closed than the next one?? Planted by someone methinks to get people thinking about Jan and thinking we are looking to invest..... or exchange?

didnt see the game saturday, only bcc highlights but i thought mcginn looked decent

bazza67 Aye it was a poor turnout I thought.

Our supporters bus had about 10/15 seats empty and that was reflected in the % seats empty at CP. With the glorious sunshine perhaps some supporters decided to enjoy what might be one of the last hot/sunny day's of the year.

If thats the support during a nice day what will it be like in the middle of winter.

No, but women glow and men plunder. (thumbsup)

I thought that McGinn did play well, but would have been a darn sight more effective if we had played 2 strikers, or even one tall one!

Very strange tactics & team selection...

Not that you're paranoid or anything, but since when did the chimps with typewriters in the press need the Celtic board to get them to write speculative nonsense?

Peter Lawwell is an able executive, but to listen to some people he sits gloating over his sinister plans for world domination while stroking a white cat.

If it were a Lawwellite plot to get so-called Celtic supporters to stop being miserable gits, I'd credit the guy with more imagination than to rehash the ancient Robbie Keane rumour.

I share your concerns about our lack of decent forwards. I can remember having to play Sheridan last season and it seems to be an area where we simply do not hav enough cover to deal with injuries.

It is as if the left back syndrome has become the up front one but it cannot wait three seasons to be addressed.

I've read a lot of negativity over the weekend and I try to innoculate myself from it by being positive. I got the feeling after the match that the whole team looked jet-lagged....and the comments TM made about having 15 players away over the fortnight, facing a Dundee Utd team that had 2 weeks to prepare specifically for this game, as well as having one eye on the Thursday game, brought me back to reality. I now get the feeling that TM was trying a bodge job....he had players who were injured, he had players who were knackered, but he needed to get some game time under their belts in prep for Thursday. HTA will be no pushovers, but if we come away with a win, having played good football, who on CQN will complain....sit DOWN, Negative Anon!

To my mind, on a fair playing field, that game was ours anyway. Where I was sitting in the Jock Stein, I could see Gomes control the ball with his arm before he put in the cross, so could hundreds around me. There was also no way Sammi was offside and the penalty decision was to be expected....I realise that ball to hand is a contentious issue, but come on, it was netbound and he lifted his hand to the ball. Levein is doing his usual smoke and mirrors from the Book Of Wattie, calling into question Celtic's 'disputed' free kick that we scored from...change the record, mate, Jeffries and MacPherson use that excuse every year, I thought you were better....'If the ref hadn't given Celtic a free kick....in their own half....70 yards from our goal....in the 18th minute....they would never have scored that header....in the 23rd minute. The ref needs to be stronger!' Well, a strong ref would see Celtic's opponents finish with 8 or 9 men in 2 of the 4 games so far this season....

So, given that, in happy clapper land, where I SOOOOO want to be this early in the season after the mineshafting of last May, we were once again McCurry-ed out of a win, I'll go forth and spread the good news...especially as the Keane rumour is back!!!!Woo hoo!!! Board haters, please feel free to tell me to go forth and self-multiply!

Hail Hail!!!

Absolutely spot on re. central midfield. They were DREADFUL (with an Eastern European guttural 'R')

To be frank, I have always been suspicious of those here lauding N'guemo's arrival. Holding midfield is THE easiest position in the team to get brownie points - very easy to look industrious and 'up for it'. Your mistakes land on top of your defenders and THEY look culpable.

He should never have been signed. Full stop.

We have plenty players (including Kojo's cardboard cut-out) who could do the job equally well, if not better, not to mention good players coming through the ranks. That signing baffles me.

The Happoel coach was at the game on Saturday. He felt that if Dundee United had had a little more self-belief they could have won the game. Hapoel WILL have that self-belief.

We need Barry Robson back. Boy oh boy, do we ever!

The Guardian today included a 1981 re-print of Roy of the Rovers (I was 8.) It was the edition where Roy Race had been shot and Blackie Gray took over the wounded Roy's regular Message and his Talk-In!

Apart from brilliant memories of the The Safest Hands in Soccer and The Footballer Who Wouldn't Stay Dead, there was a picture of George McClusky's second goal in Celtic's 3-1 win against Dundee at Den's Park.

The photo was requested by James Begley of Clapham, London SW4. the lucky lad won THREE POUNDS.

Twists n turns - one of the many unrealistic aspects of 'Winnie the Pooh' was that both Kanga and Roo had American accents. It's as if whoever wrote it did no research at all.

Also, tigers aren't friendly, loveable bouncy goofballs. Tigers, in fact, are the dobbers of the animal kingdon, and have been known to eat small boys and gay German magicians. (they taste like lederhosen and glitter)

In short, animals are evil, which is why I feel no guilt about eating them. Even foie gras.

Vegetarians are stupid hippies who aren't pulling their weight, so for every animal they don't eat, I eat three.

Also, eating beef allows me to increase my carbon footprint while eating dead land-cows, so it's a win-win.

On a day when Liverpool have announced a major sponsorship deal with a bank that few of us will have heard of, bringing millions into the pot for Benitez to spend, it would be good if the detractors of Peter Lawwell and the board were to consider the market that Celtic operate in.

In order for Celtic to generate the level of sponsorship we currently get fro Carling, or preferably better, we have to look to global companies. The days of CR Smith and Peoples are long gone, but to sme on here they would prefer them back but still cannot advise us of how we then compete!

Signing Naka and more recently our Chinese and Korean signings would suggest that our next sponsor is likely to be an Asian Finace company/ Bank. Celtic will be looking to announce soon who is sponsoring us after this season, so perhaps over the next few weeks the detractors could tell us exctly how much their cunning plan without Peter Lawwell would be generating over the next 4 or 5 years!

Once again I expect we will get the usual emotional and negative crap but not one single constructive suggestion.

Are we frustrated that our team isn't better? Of course we are. But we have to accept that as a business we do reasonably well under Lawwell, but as a football team we hve failed and now have a new manager to improve the football side of Celtic!

The focus, our focus is on winning games of football be they on saturday, sunday, tuesday. wednesday or thursday. That is also the focus of trying to bring in further investment from afar, and that is why our Chief Executive doesn't deserve the negativity he receives!

Hail Hail

I have to say that our performances from the Hibs game do not appear to be in any way close to our earlier season football. I know we were missing 2 big players for the game on Saturday but maybe chennaiseabird has a point in connecting the drop in standards with Donati leaving.

The last 2 games were more in tune with last season's performances. I still have confidence in TM improving things and getting back to our early form and regaining the title but am not as optimistic on the European front or how close the SPL could be.

that was a lot of wham bars and Haircut 100 LP's in them days.

I have been stating all season so far that we underestimate the Darnel at our peril, and after seeing them and us at the week end all be it them on tv, there is a fag paper between us.

Saturday's struggle did not surprise me, with McGeady out of the team there was absolutely no creative spark, and unlike Paul i thought the starting line up was wrong, playing one up front at home in the SPL for me is appalling and i am worried that this reflects our offensive options.

Some of the players need to give themselves a shake already, if they think that the level of performance was acceptable then it is size 10's up the jacksie time.

It is amazing that the forward line has not been strengthened BTM knew what he was getting when he signed Fortune, and yet we still never signed an out and out forward.

BTM has got off to an okay start, but the same frailties that were apparant last season are still there and our squad has not been improved.

Frustrating times ahead methinks.

A few observations to mull over as the season gets into 2nd gear this week...

1. Is this the smallest, most lightweight Celtic team of all time?
2. Does BTM yet know his first choice 11 players?
3. Are Rearrangers likely to provide us with more entertainment in the form of CL bigot singing, subsequent UEFA penalties and outright humpings at the hands of decent European teams than Celtic will on the football park this season?
4. Is there really a media debate surrounding Bougherra's penalty (stonewall) and our free kick that led to our goal while just a wee one liner noting our disallowed onside goal and the outrageous handball non-penalty missed by nobody other than the two people who mattered?
5. Is BTM in the habit of graciously accepting "not winning" after his last year at West Brom?
6. Is Samaras a left winger and is Shaun Maloney the new Chris Sutton centre forward?

We will find out most of the answers before Santa comes.

I take your point ( and your chastisement!!) My point was that it was an article not by the laptop loyal lapdogs searching for some lines between their pints but that it originated from an English outlet. You could be right, could be rubbish, however could also be a flag flying exercise, particularly as some of our players are allegedly covetted by Honest Harry R, and my point was that a potential swap may be of interest to all parties. Got to disagree with you however if you are saying that our CEO does not get involved in any News Management exercises.

it's hard to give the robbie keane story any credence....it's possibly just complete fiction on behalf of the journalist, maybe kite flying on behalf of someone's agent.....i find it hard to believe that it was spun by anyone on our board

what would be the point ? what's to gain ?.....a large section of the support are thoroughly fed up with what they perceive as either penury/lack of ambition/poor judgement on the boards behalf...

raising expectations about signing a guy who will be 30 shortly isn't likely to quell those misgivings...especially if it dosn't happen

the activity in midfield players would suggest that there is likely to be players in that area moving out in January ....and we need a striker, so you can see the logic....at least initially

robbie keane would no doubt be a great success in the SPL for a few years, he would however represent the biggest investment we have ever made in our history and it would be unlikely to make economic sense

for those reasons i would pass....however if dermott is going to fund it personally, and there is no reason he should, then welcome with open arms

Anyone know if Thursday's game is on the telly anywhere or on C67/UEFA websites?

Irvine Celt @1.26
You asked ” What market do celtic operate in?” and called for reality checks amongst us.
IMO we operate in a market that has a fan base in the top twenty of Europe.
We operate in market where we spend more than 1 million quid a week to put a team on the park.
We operate in market where 80% of our competitors have resources that are around 10% to 20% of ours.
We operate in market where we start most seasons with a 50/50 Chance of SPL title and a CL place.
Revenue Generation
Does zero debt, No CL place, No championship flag and no star players enhance our ability to get a high paying Nike style deal or does it make it more likely to get a CR Smith style deal?
Does zero debt, No CL place, No championship flag and no star players enhance our ability to get punters in thru the turnstiles to generate revenue.
Does zero debt, No CL place, No championship flag and no star players enhance our ability to improve our euro co efficient so that we avoid doing games likes of Arsenal qualifiers or does it diminish our chances of euro success and increased revenue
Would 10 million quids worth of investment in the team (you might just call it debt) be paid backto us in terms of increased
sponsorship payments
attendance payments
CL progress and payments
Etc.
I don’t think any of the mineshafters detractors are suggesting that we go 40 million quid in debt or anything like that. But there is no point in having zero debt, if it means second best in SPL, Euro league and tumbling attendances and falling income streams.

Far East Revenues
I personally don’t believe that the vast bulk of Chinas population who struggle to get food and power on a daily basis will be running out to buy celtic jerseys from their local nike store for 50 quid. But maybe that’s just me.

Suggestions/Ideas
Bu in fairness, Irvice Celt I guess that part of your message is for PL detractors to be positive and make a suggestion. Okay here goes

Short Term Objective 1. More important than Korea or China.

Forget about a sports shop in seoul, or a market in bejing selling knock off tops, get the people in Glasgow back to the park. Fill the seats at the park again with folk paying around £500 per head per season. This has been done before PL came and is an achievable target. The very fact that PL can’t achieve this nowadays shows we are doing something wrong in the fans opinion.

So how does PL achieve this? Well he is in luck because the very strategy that will attract sponsors if the very same strategy that will put bums on seats. Two birds with one stone.

Reduce the size of the players pool but increase the quality
Sign a first team players and no more squad fillers
Try and sign a decent bosman here and there

And at a lower level
Play games on Saturdays at 3 pm (even OF games)
Let the people sing /Improve the atmosphere
Make it easy for supporters buses to get to and from the park
Let folk sit beside their pals in the park
Let fans buy a pre match/HT pint in a plastic cup
In short try to make it enjoyable way for fans to spend their hard earned cash. It is not rocket science, Fergus McCann done it before PL.

oh in my rant there i forgot to mention the cyclists

Paul, great shout RE: centre midfield, a position that has worried me ever since the departure of the aforemnetioned Stan Petrov. WGS tried a myriad of combinations that never worked and i was particularly annoyed on Saturday, although I actually thought Crosas acquitted himself better than normal, looked willing to challenge and pick an offensive pass.
For me, Brown and N'Guemo is not a viable cnetral midfield pairing(assuming Mogga opts for a 4-4-2 with more strikers fit) as it lacks flair, coherence and as you so aptly mentioned the ability to time runs beyond the strikers. I fear that Scott, while energetic and aggressive will never have the flair or technical ability to be a Celtic centre midfielder. Far too often his first touch is lamentable while he lacks the ability to thread a pass. If both ne and N'Guemo therefore are ball winners where does the creativity stem from, in some ways we seem 2 b playing to holding mids.
I think the problem rests in the fcat that 2 many of our midfielders are 1-dimensional (eg. Donati had vision but no pace or agressiom, Brown has pace and bite but lack of flair, Naka ability bt not the strength nor pace to wholly influence a game)
but to attain an all-rounder(to my mind Stan was the last one we had)yo urwally have to pay over the odds and this is something the board are not seemingly prepared to do. On a less gloomy note McGinn really impressed me on Saturday, different style to Aiden or Shaun, more old fashioned, direct winger who gets to byline and fires over a telling cross.
Ne thoughts fellow Tims???

Hi all,

I watched the game on Saturday and was a little disappointed with the formation. I suppose I have never been a fan of the lone striker role…..

Dundee Utd were certainly up for the battle and unfortunately felt that we were not. This is the first time I have said this since TM has been at the helm.

Defensively I thought we were poor and even with the beefed up midfield I thought we did not dominate any area of the pitch. I do think we will get better but we must start with two strikers!

All in all an entertaining match and another learning curve for TM..

Hail Hail
SPC

Tamrabam

Good post mate.

I have a friend who is an ex pro with Motherwell. From this season he is now running all their hospitality (bars only). In the DC stand at fir park he has opened up the whole of the function suite on match days for the normal fans (adults and kids) wearing jeans, tops and scarfs to get a few pints before and after the game - they have increased the takings massively.

Now, I understand a lot of the hospitality suites at CP are busy enough, however, surely there is an opportunity to increase revenue. Creating an area where the normal fan can get a pint in reasonable comfort, rather than having to hide in bushes or be in the Springfield/London Rd Tavern/ or any of the other sh...holes around the ground. The investment to do this would be minimal and make the whole experience of going to CP a bit better.

bjmac

I have read a few remarks today from people referencing the fact we only started with 1 striker on Saturday and drawing comparisions with Rangers and also insinuating it is a negative tactic. Now my next comment is not meant to insult or have a dig but for me this is nieve and perhaps indicative of people who perhaps only watch Celtic and not football in general.

Playing with one up front is becoming the standard tactic in European football. 1 up front is not a negative tactic, how you deploy the midfield and full backs (like Walter does) is what makes it negative. In fact some students of the game seem to think it is moving towards seeing teams with NO recognised forwards but instead interchangeable attacking midfielders.

The 442 is dying. 4 man midfields are dying. It is why you often see us over-run in European games, the Euro team generally have an extra man in the middle of the park and they make it count.

There was nothing negative about BTM's tactics on Saturday. Moving towards a 5 man midfield and a lone striker is the way to go to compete in Europe. Man Utd, Barca, Liverpool etc all play with 1 man up front being supported by fast midfielders. The problem is we do not have the players, particularly the striker, to play this system. We have Maloney and McGeady who could ably play in this system but we lack a focal point for the attack. Skippy just doesn't have the tools. Samaras I think lacks the belief. Fortune from what I have seen lacks the tools and the belief for that role. BTM needs to get out there and use our scouts we need an attacking focal point.

Just a passing comment, I am very interested in stats, I am a real statto, in particular on attendances.

Its true that Celtic have been supported at our highest ever level for the past 10 years, with regular single match attendances around the 57,000 mark for the average SPL lower level opponents.

Ive stated before though that I am now becoming totally perplexed by match day attendances, and whats reported.

I understand that there will allways be a portion of ST holder who for a variety of reasons cannot attend, but that they will be reported as part of the attendees.

But on saturday again we had a reported figure of 58,500.
The exact same figure as the previous league game.

But on checking on saturday morning on the website there were huge sections of the ground that had tickets available to buy.

So whats the reality ? were there only 1500 unsold seats ?

How can the attendance be the exact same every week ?

hhhhhhhmmm, astounded of forehead, and scratching it as we speak.

Now Paul67, I know you have said before that we have to look at all sources of generating revenue for the club, but do you not think that to have Sky adverting their Champions League coverage on the official club website is taking it a bit too far............

sorry - should have said advertising

PF Ayr,

if your about, I know you scratch your head on this one as well, but from your vantage point how many green empty tip ups could you estimate ?

HI J.

Good to see you back on CQN. Hows tricks in the Lone Star State? I hear you may be coming back to sunny Singapore.
Agree with your comments re the team on Sat. Still thought we were an improvement on last season but TM needs to plug the hole through the centre of defence andfind us a big scoring centre. I like MAF and we seem to play better when he is in the team despite what Kojo says. For someone who admits he never played the game he sure has a lot of opinions and conclusions about most players but then he is entitled to his views and they are amusing and ps.enjoyable ,most times.

Hope we see you again soon. Its your round I think?

ps. Maybe Robson coming back will stop some teams bullying our lightweight midfield.

taggsybhoy,
If you're in Ireland, it's on 3e, the new(ish) entertainment channel from TV3.

bizarre but true.

cardiffbhoy - I mentioned this before when someone questioned there being an advert for a film about football hooligans on the website. Chances are that Celtic just sell the space to a third party ad vendor and have no actual control about what appears. Unless they receive word that something has offended in which case thay couls ask retrospectively to have it pulled.

I've put this kind of ad server in on various sites and there's no controlling what appears.

Cardiff Bhoy
no worries we now what advertisng is :-)

It is strange about attendance, I was always under the impression that back in the day the board would advise that the attendance figures were lower than were as to avoiud tax. Why now make them higher than they are? for what purpose? Kudos?

RL

I agree entirely that playing one up is not of itself negative, but given the players that we have available, am not certain that it will work for us, & certainly not if Scott Brown is the main offensive threat apart from our only striker.

Given that the team selection on saturday involved picking one guy that was likely to carry much of a goal threat, & with pretty much everyone apart from the goalie & back 4 being about 5 foot nothing, if the selection & tactics weren't negative, which i am not sure I agree with you on, given the personnel involved, they were certainly strange, & i hope will not be repeated unless & until the squad has undergone a makeover which would mean that playing with one up front might work!

I recall someone on here saying that the club assume all season ticket holders are in attendance (or count them as 'sold' seats).

Can someone explain for me the deal between Channel 5 & ESPN to screen Europa cup matches this season.

What channel will show this week's game and is there soem link between matches played inside/outside uk?

Thanks

Celtic use a computer called 'Desmond', or Big Des, to count home attendances.

The original, an analogue machine of the same vintage as the one that cracked the Enigma codes at Bletchley Park, was called the 'White Desmond'. It would assemble all available data and eventually come up with the magic answer of 26,000.

The'White Desmond' is sitting in a hole in a field at Cambuslang, waiting for the rest of the stadium to be completed so it can be plugged in.

The new, digital machine, the 'Dermot Desmond' analyses much the same data and comes up with a new magic answer, 58,500.

The biggest disappointment for me on Saturday was Shaun Maloney.
This wee guy got lucky at landing back at Celtic for a second chance, he is no longer a youngster and is on good money, however when is he going to deliver performances on a consistent basis? Having a wee dart here and there is not good enough. On Sat the manager even trusted him to go into a central position and try and pull the strings, what did he deliver, hee haw.
Come on Shaun, show us the player that you promised to be, oh and please practice harder with your free kicks, Saturdays attempts were pathetic

Worth a few bob each way

penang_bhoy - I agree. For me one up front is not an option for us just now. We don't have the players for it at the moment. (I probably should have been clearer in my post regarding that) 442 is the way we should probably be going for now but only BTM will know the reasons he picked the team he did on Saturday. I do think he set them out to try and attack and play open football but it just didn't happen and failed to turn into chances. The substitutions made no difference whatsoever aswell. Saturday was a strange one for sure.

It just worries me as from watching West Brom it seemed obvious BTM would want the 5 man midfield and 1 up front route that most teams are going on now and yet the puzzling thing for me is even without seeing our squad in training you could look on paper and see we were missing the vital striker to make it work. This was compunded by him sanctioning the near £4m purchase of a support striker when that is not what we needed. Taking the whole formation thing out of the equation, a blind man could see whatever formation we adopted we needed a new goal scorer in the summer. I hope it does not come back to haunt us.

Trial by CQN.

In the dock - Gary Caldwell.

Crime: 5 poor games already this season, and worst of all, your honour, the unpardonable blemish of 3 BAD GAMES IN A ROW!

I put it to you that Gary Caldwell has played a series of games where he has squandered possession with long floated balls to no one, put players under pressure with bad decision making, lost out in challenges, and made the odd howler or two. He should henceforth be consigned to a place on the bench.

Bring back Mick.

Give Gary a spell on the sidelines, and I will extend my stay in Pleasedville. If not, I will have serious doubts about the managerial abilities of Tony Mowbray.

Nick19

I think the deal is similar to what Sky/ITV have for the Champions League.

In the case of the Europa League, ITV, Five and ESPN will all show games. No idea how they decide who shows what but their fitures for this week are:

18:00 Hapoel Tel-Aviv v Celtic UEFA Europa League Group C ESPN
18:00 CSKA Sofia v Fulham UEFA Europa League Group E ITV4
20:05 Fenerbahce v FC Twente UEFA Europa League Group H ESPN
20:05 Everton v AEK Athens UEFA Europa League Group I Five
20:05 Athletic Bilbao v Austria Wien UEFA Europa League Group L ITV4

It looks like ITV4 and ESPN get 2 games each and Five get 1.

With Everton, Fulham and Celtic all involved, I'm hopeful Celtic will be on one of those channels.

Mort

RogueLeader,

Good point re: 1 up front. Gordon Strachan discussed this in his new column for 4-4-2, his theory is it's dependant on a striker who has a bit of everything: eye for goal, pace, physical presence (e.g. Drogba, Torres or Adebayor) therefore only the big teams can afford that type of striker and poorer teams need to spread those skills across 2 strikers and end up playing 4-4-2.

I agree that one up front isn't necessarily negative - you could argue Barcelona's tactics last season changed from 4-5-1 to 4-3-3 during most games.

DBBCD,

Cheers mate.

I believe it won at York a week past yesterday and same "source" had it last week. Apparently there has been no penalty for the win.

"The substitutions made no difference whatsoever"

It was actually worse than that - each subsitution seemed to make us worse which is a big worry.

First post for goodness knows how long....

At the game on Saturday, first of the season for me. Settled into my new seat in the South Stand with my brother who has returned from an extended stay in Newcastle. Really looking forward to a good game, against the only team outside Rangers who we know will come to play and give us a right good game at Parkhead.

First time for my brother in Parkhead for a while outside of CL, and his first reaction was, what in the man aboves name is it with our home support these days?

The fella who now sits next to us, prob in his late 30's early 40's, who, to be fair to him, did seem to know a bit about the game. He made some decent points about players positioning, pressing etc. He knew the game and how to play it. What stood out tho was his complete and utter, and I would go as far to say "hatred" of almost all of the Celtic players. His delight when his chosen victim at that moment made an error was palpable, as if vindicated...see I was right he's murder!

He had a suitably derogatory nickname for each and every player, and I mean EVERY one...save for Danny Fox and Niall McGinn, whom probably due to making his debut and his winger build got the "wee man" tag. In saying that he gave him 30 minutes before demanding he be hooked as he'd "tried his best but husnae got it"

The identical attitude was displayed by 2 guys in the seats in front of us. One with Radio Clyde blaring in his ear, castigated each and every player at almost every turn, the other, nearing retirement years, sought to agree with everything the fella said like the "assistant manager" sketch in chewin the fat, adding in his own expletives when the former happened to miss them out - not very often.

To me this only highlights the very depressing and negative attitude that surrounds the Celtic support at the moment. It's prevalent in the stands and it's prevalent on the messages posted on this blog and others.

Somehow I don't think even us winning the league at a canter with this team would suffice for a lot of our support such is the entrenched disdain they have for a large number of our players/board or whatever manifestation their ire takes. It certainly didn't under WGS.

From what I saw on Saturday, as a team we desperately need a respected leader of men on the park, an inspirational signing (or two) for the fans to rally together again behind, and ideally a goal scoring striker - maybe all rolled into one....come in Robbie Keane, your time is NOW!

Hail Hail

lubo1977 - Exactly. I just find it a tad strange to read comments like "we shouldn't be playing one up front at home" knowing there is nothing at all wrong with playing one up front, that alone doesn't make it a negative tactic.

I blame the media, particularly radio phone ins, who were stoking this up last year to get a reaction from Rangers fans to call their shows. For me this has left a false impression with some folk. It is a nonsense. Although they did play the odious football killing 451.

Of course Catholic Schools also have to shoulder some of the blame aswell....

Domenico1888

I am nodding along with the gist of your post - Brown and N'Guemo don't look great together, although I think it needs to be borne in mind that one is struggling with an ankle problem off the back of 2 international games, whle the other had played 2 competitive matches in Africa. Why pick them, then? Go figure!

On the subject of Mcginn, this is the kind of thing that infuriates me about Celtic fans, nay, fans in general. They see a fresh face coming through the ranks perform one or two bits of trickery/pace and think he's a goer.

Ever wondered why so many divorced men get themselves re-hitched to a living, breathing, CARBON COPY of their much-criticized ex-wife?

Mcginn had a POOR game.

It would be hypocritical of me to castigate Aiden for his wonderful runs followed by duff passes/wayward shots if I didn't apply the same logic to Mcginn. He did exactly that (without the shooting bit). Good runs. Gets past 2 players. Then squanders it. What good is that? I'll tell ya! No good whatsoever! Oh, and Mcginn is no Aiden.

You want praise for an up and comer? Look no further than Paul Caddis. He did everything right and should have been on from the start.

My assessment of the match? Fox and Maloney were our two golden boys. The rest were either mediocre, or, in the case of Hinkel (the worst offender), Caldwell, N'Guemo, Brown and Samaras, and young Niall, ran the gamut of DUFF to DIRE.

But for a refereeing decision we would have a different view of each substitution making us worse.

Of course, a disallowed Celtic 'goal' and a not given penalty incident are far less worth talking about than Walter the great and his saving of another Boogy red card on Saturday.

On the pubs around Celtic Park, has anyone else ever thought like me that the Old School could have three foors of "Themed" bars:
Ground Floor for the Old School 7-1 game until Fyenoord in Milan;
First Floor: End of the Lions, Dalglish, Centenary
Second Floor: 2000 til now!

It could even be a club where guys whose bus parks in the bus park could take a membership, with the casj going into the club!

Hail Hail

Do Celtic have a feeder club in Lilliput.

Mort - it's quite galling that it's only £6 more expensive for non season ticket holders and not because I think they should be getting charged more than £90.

Initially I didn't think the 3 match package was too bad at £84 but when I consider it in light to two qualifiers, I tend to think that £75 would have been a more acceptable figure.

And while I don't think we should pay overmuch attention to what happens across the river I noted that their 3 match package was £90 for season ticket holders and £111 for normal fans.

The actual benefit of being a Season Ticket holder get less year on year. We're not far off the point where with discounts etc you only have to miss one match for it to have been cheaper to get tickets on a match by match basis. I go on my own, it's not like I feel compelled to sit in any particular area.

weeminger, someone posted on here the other day on ticket prices for Europa league. Apparently Everton sold their 3 game package for £60 to season book holders. Too much to ask Celtic to do the same ? I guess so.

Has anyone read all the criticism for St Mirren player Stephen McGinn for his "dive" to win a penalty for his side on Saturday.

St Mirren penalty at 31 secs on

If this was a Celtic player who did this, how much would be written, spoken etc about it. I can guarantee it, everyone in the media would be falling over themselves to have their tuppence worth on it and he would be banned for a couple of games.

Also there was an incident in the Celtic match where a Dundee United player (Gomis or Bauben, not sure who as picture on C67 a tad fuzzy) left his foot in and stamped on a Celtic player. This was similar if not worse than Looven's challenge on Edu last season when Loovens was subsequently banned for 2 games.

Will anything be done about this?

Mort

i think that you are correct when you say winning the league this season at a canter will not resolve the negativity issues at CP now
BTM should have an easier job than WGS had against the huns,
Everyone and their dog knows that rangers are a spent force and have been for 5 or 6 years

How much credibility do celtic expect when they win a 2 horse race against a bankrupt huns team- is that the extent of their ambition?

The cannae spends against the wullnae spends?

scottish fitba is finished and has been for quite some time.
"the only is out"

Always wondered why the club have never opened their own bar/bars around the stadium. The stampede from the merchant city/Gallowgate at 14:30 on a Saturday could be reduced to a stroll if you could ahve a decent pint in a decent pub around the stadium, Re: the wetherspoons pub in the Almondvale centre, is a 3 minute walk to the stadium over a wee burn.

RL

yep, i think you are on the money with your analysis. Possibly, we could play with one up front if it was Aiden rather than Brown being the main support, but even at that, i am far from convinced that any of our strikers could do even a poor mans Drogba impersonation! Sami possibly could, on a good day, but never Skippy.

I had expected a substantial turnover in the transfer window, with of necessity guys who may not fit a more flexible system being moved on to create funds to bring in guys who would, but that didn't happen.

Its probably a work in progress, & it will take time to remould the team. However, at this time, & with the personnel available, Tony's team selection on saturday made no sense at all, & his substitutions were very odd.

weeminger

"The actual benefit of being a Season Ticket holder get less year on year" - spot on mate. For the first time since these Euro packages began I have not purchased one. I intend buying on a match-by-match basis which, although not currently possible, will become so nearer the match.

Having had a season ticket since we were at Hampden I find myself, for the first time, querying the benefit. Other than having the same seat and being guaranteed a ticket for the Orcs matches I am struggling to justify the expense versus the option of buying tickets for the games I can make (family committments and work mean I tend to miss 2,3 or 4 league games a season.

I suppose it doesn't help that this year I have a new 'neighbour' who is a complete lunatic and spoils the match for those around him.

weeminger

I agree that £75 for season ticket holders and £90 for non-season ticket holders would have been better. It would have been nice for the club to give something back to those who bought season tickets during this time of financial hardship for many.

Non-season ticket holders would probably have complained that they were paying £5 more per game but then therin lies the advantage of a season ticket.

Henrik's - Everton are not dependant on ticket sales for their income. We are, and we need to maximise the amount we receive. It's not ideal but its understandable.

With the Europa league being marketed in the same way as CL, I am pretty sure Everton will make more from the Europa League than Celtic.

"Short Term Objective 1.

In short try to make it enjoyable way for fans to spend their hard earned cash. It is not rocket science, Fergus McCann done it before PL."

Excellent post, couldn't agree more.....and you are right it's not rocket science, it is logical common sense

but to get to the point you arrived at , you have to spend 90% of your time thinking about ways of improving the product and 10% on reducing costs....our executive directors seem to have that equation in reverse

up_over_.....,
and loovens? afraid I gave only 3 players pass marks for saturday, but I agree with lubo, singling out of N'Guemo was out of order, and the manager has seriously dropped in my estimation as a result. OK we might expect better from him, but when we watched so many perform so badly. Even if the manager was just trying to bring the bhoy back down to earth (the hype), I dont think that was the right way.
Mowbrey, out of order, sort the consistenet donkeys out first.

Henrik's Sombrero - as I said I didn't think it was too bad a price initially and I'm not sure that we should really compare ourselves with Everton in this instance.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they consider the Europa Cup a distraction somewhere below the FA Cup in importance, whereas we end to think of European nights as the current pinnacle of the 'Celtic Experience'. It would be interesting to see what Everton might charge for a CL 3 match package. I doubt it would be pitched so low.

I don't think that the club are necessarily exploiting the attraction of the European nights either. It's a fine balancing act maximising income from tickets against demand, and I'm starting to think they might have edged it slightly too high.

That said the games will probably all sell-out anyway.

penang_bhoy - contrary to what some say I agree with you and I think Sammi could do the lone striker job. As I said before though he lacks the belief. He has a good first touch, an accurate shot and is decent in the air however his confidence can evaporate in an instant.

Skippy will never ever be able to play the lone striker's role, I am at a loss as to why BTM even attempted it. Killen would be better in that role than Skippy and that is saying something!

One of our best performances under Golden Gordon was the 7-0 demolition of Saint Mirren when we played 'without' a centre-forward.

We have so many midfielders and so few strikers that 4-6-0 is the way forward.

Andybhoy
dont be so bloody stupid that would mean that some folks might enjoy themselves
we will soon put a stop to that!!!

Fitba has unfortunately become an ovepriced, overpoliced game, where unnecesarily strict rules take tje place of common sense

stand by for avalanches of posts about pee doon the back of yer leg and never again.

it rankles me that there has not been a significant disturbance in scotland since the hampden riot about 30 years ago, yet we still see fit to change KO times and bring in ever stricter laws.

DannyBoyle - I'm in exactly the same position and from my point of view I quite often find the Rangers games less than enjoyable as a football match. Much of the fun comes after the game (if we win), so at a certain level that barely swings it as being a reason to have a ST.

For me the main reason to have one is just the convenience factor.

Rogue Leader........Samaras I think lacks the belief

I think of all the things he has or doesnt have, lacking belief isnt one of them. In fact, I wish he was as good as
a. He thinks he is, and
b. The game he talks.

What he is lacking, is the quality to a Celtic Football Club. I cringe when watching him, because I know he is about to embarrass most of the straight male race with his cowards attempt at pretending he is challenging for the ball or jumping out of the way of a challenge coming in!

I really really really dont like seeing him in a Celtic jersey. It was difficult but manageable when he was doing the business for us, but when, as has happened in around 75% of his time, he isnt doing it, it hurts me watching him.

Then when i had a feeling of relief when I saw him coming on on Saturday, I started to think about the 4-5-1 formation and what that was doing to me....

(p.s. the Mizuno substitution ranked up there with them too!)

Once again, I agree with everything that you say! Skippy is a 4 4 2 man, & never in a million years suitable to play as lone striker. Killen is a bit more suited to the role, but as he isn't especially good, i'd rather we didn't try that!

Sami could play there, but would need a good dose of confidence & to have more positional discipline. A good coach & possibly an investment in a sports psychologist might be worth a shout- he has every physical asset, & i recall that Wenger was looking at him at an early stage in his career, before going for Adebayor.

He is still quite young, & could develop, but to see Tony playing Skippy ahead of him as the main/only striker, using Brown as the main support striker, & when he is eventually brought on as sub, being confined to the left wing, is not going to boost his confidence.

We really need to stop agreeing!!

up over goal @ 4.20pm
"McGinn had a POOR game"

Rubbish!!!!! Give the boy a break. The boy did exactly what was asked of him, showed for a pass, very rarely gave the ball away and got past his man on several occasions to put decent crosses into the box. Only thing missing was someone to capitalise. The mistake was not playing either Samaras or Killen from the start, a taller striker who could attack the cross.
The goal apart, Skippy in the air against Webster and Dods was an obvious mismatch.
McGinn may not have produced a match winning performance but your assessment of him suggests your dug was giving you updates.

Does anyone know if Thursday's game v Hapoel is on the telly?

SadiesBhoy - ESPN

tamrabam

and that is the argument it boils down to, pretty much akin to those in life who buy the telly on tic and pay it up over 5 years against those who save up and pay for it with their own cash.

The problem I have is this word ambition....
To me personal ambition should never be limited, be the best you can be, this would apply equally to a team going out to play a game of football in front of a crowd.

Ambition however has to take into account responsibility for the liveliehoods of over 500 people, the earnings of many thousands of supporters and shareholders and millions more around the world who live their lives with the day to day enjoyment of Celtic FC.

That is something which I don't think many people consider when urging what they see as ambition.

On the flip side, there is always scope for a calculated risk once in a while when required, and I think as we can see from performances over the last year and a half, we need some sort of risk taking to at least re-energise a flagging support.

Hail Hail

Eyes Wide Open - I see what you are saying, and going by his performances I could not give any argument to disprove your opinion. I just think from what i have seen there is a player inside Samaras. We have seen glimpses of it. We got it for an extended period last year prior to his injury. The good player just needs to be coaxed and coached out of him I think. He has the technical skills and I know you disagree with this, but inconsistency and poor decision making are usually borne from a lack of confidence in either himself or the others around him. A confident Sammi on his game is a valuable player for Celtic. He just needs to stay on his game and stay confident...over to you Venus & Grant.

penang_bhoy - So the question remains then...why on Earth did BTM play with Skippy as a lone striker?

Kojo @ 2009 4:49 PM

I'm still laughing at your broad brush attack on half the team above. You used to be the most positive ghuy on the Blog! I remember I was positive too at one time but lost the plot after our draw against Motherwell in Jan/Feb which marked the second occasion last season that we had conceded a 7 point lead. I've never quite regained the plot ever since.

I do think, now, that while I would never, ever describe myself as a mineshafter, that as a support in general, the Celtic support are far too soft and ready to tolerate beyond what is a reasonable time poor performances from players and management. I am still raging at our Board for their complete negligence and dereliction of duty in failing to bury a very poor and cash strapped Rangers last season. This has let them off the hook and jeopardised our progress as a club. They are being allowed to squirm out of it and have not given a good enough account of why we failed to invest in players in January. Their priority should have been to secure the League title and not worry about what any new manager might think of players purchased in January.

The same situation must not be allowed to happen again in the next window. They owe us big time.

RL - the obvious answer to your last question should be - "TM wants to play the ball on the deck, so it doesn't matter how tall Scott McDonald is, he's better with his back to goal".

Unfortunately Scott McDonald's 1st touch is such that with his back to goal any passes to him tend to end up back in the centre circle. :)

Maybe McDonald just looked better in training. Only Mowbray knows.

Sami is just about the most frustrating player i've ever seen at parkhead. He has every physical asset he needs to be a top player- pace, power, height, ability in the air, decent technique, & he can finish.

However... & there is a big however...

he so rarely displays these assets, & can at times look worse than useless, & every bit as bad as EWO suggests. At other times, he can look as if he is by miles the best player, bar Artur, in the SPL.

There is a player in there, but i don't know if it will ever emerge. He does need confidence, & for the coaches to believe in him, but i still think a few sessions with a sports psychologist might help too.

Re why Tony picked Skippy as sole striker on saturday-

Sorry, I cannot even guess at his reasons. I can't see why he would have thought that was a good idea, but presumably he did.

If The Mirror is flying a story linking "Rabbi" Keane to us, it is only so that "sister" Mirror Group paper; The Record, can subsequently run a headline blockbusting story rubbishing the possibility completely, and while it is doing so, poke, jibe and even perhaps slander Celtic and the Celtic support into the bargain.

If Celtic sign Robbie Keane, I will eat my hat.

On Loovens.

After the first half, I'd be agreeing with you. But he picked up his play in the second half, and just about gets pass marks. I think we need to see what central defence looks like with him and McManus in it (no nasty picture links, please!). At least with McManus we'd have

a) someone better at scoring goals from corners

b) a no-nonsense defender who does the sensible thing

c) no more floaty floaties to their goalie!

Did Mowbray do the right thing in singling out N'Guemo? Only he knows that, or maybe he doesn't. I strongly believe that knowing how what makes someone tick is THE single most important facet of a manager, and sorts out the best from the rest (Stein, O'Neill, Ferguson, and Capello spring to mind). Let's hope he's got this one right.

When I say I'm baffled by the signing, I mean simply that. He's not a bad player. I just think we have enough players of that ilk at our disposal.

Make no mistake, there are good draws and bad draws. This was a bad one, not just because we should have won it, but because the team performance was BELOW PAR.

Only 3 get pass marks? You, sir, are a hard man to please! But, yes, if we're going down pass/fail route, Loovens gets a narrow fail from me too. On the same basis, though, Boruc, Crosas, Mcdonald and Mizuno scrape a pass. Lucky them!

The one player who definitely needs a spell in the sulk box is Caldwell. He has had one too many bad games. It would be a dereliction of duty on Mr Mowbray's part, if he were to play on Wednesday.

SadiesBhoy - "I am still raging at our Board for their complete negligence and dereliction of duty in failing to bury a very poor and cash strapped Rangers last season. This has let them off the hook and jeopardised our progress as a club"

Yours is quite a commonly held view, and so this isn't a dig at you.

How well do you think we'd progress if we had buried Rangers, not necessarily into administration but evem just where they have more in common with eg Aberdeen or D Utd?

Now I'm not one of those people that even gives a seconds thought to the notion that we let them win the league but if we had buried them I don't think they or the other teams would even come close to challenging us for at least five years. As a Celtic supporter it would be great to think of 10-in-a-row but for our progress as a football team it would be an utter disaster. We already struggle in Europe and that's with 4 games against semi-decent opposition per season.

Until we have a clear route out of the SPL I don't necessarily believe burying Rangers is a great idea, and I say that from a football perspective not a financial one.

Paul67 etal.

I think if anyone who reads the papers or watched T/V this morning, will wonder what we have to do to compete with the top tier in England.Liverpool announced this morning that they have struck a deal with Standard Charter Bank worth a staggering £80.000.000 over four years.

I understand the T/Vdeal for the Premier League is £40.000.000 per season, per club, that in itself is a phenominal amount.but add on another £20.000.000 re Liverpools case, that's £60.000.000 before one person pays to watch their team, where in world of football can there be a comparison.
Real Madrid splashed out Approximately £200.000.000 on a few players, but the club have put itself massively into debt trying to keep up with the jone's of English football.

Here's one example, and their not in the top echelon of the big spenders.

Aston Villa have taken their summer spending to £40million after finally confirming the signing of Manchester City skipper Richard Dunne.Villa had previously splashed out £29 million since the end of last season on Stewart Downing (£12million), Stephen Warnock (£8million), Fabian Delph (£6million) and Habib Beye (£3million).

There are some on this site that Advocate Dermot Desmond opening up his wallet and subsidising Celtic to Purchase players,There's no doubt that DD could do that for a couple of years but who pays it back to him,are we willing to up our subscription for season tickets, remember when you buy a player for £5million it doesn't mean we would get £5 million back if we decide to sell him,Scotland is in the second division when it comes to selling players.
Remember we had one of the finest players ever to grace a football park, were there ever any serious bids for him,he was rattling in goals every season but the pundits and managers always asked the question,"would he be good enough for the English League".Well he proved that he was good enough, but still the English Premiership didn't go for him.

I haven't able to watch much of the game on Ch67. The picture quality is very poor. But can I just add my tuppence worth? Our manager knows a lot more about the gemme than I'll ever know; so, with that proviso, I ask why Scott MacDonald was playing as a lone striker? I would have thought that that role would be the preserve of either Samaras or Killen.

robbie keane........never. he'd be completely off his chump to come up here an play in the guff of the sp hell

Re Robbie Keane
If his performance in Cyprus last week is anything to go by, I wouldn't touch him with the proverbial bargepole.

'He has every physical asset he needs to be a top player- pace, power, height, ability in the air, decent technique, & he can finish.'

Absolutely correct, and the 'however' is the reason he's playing for us in the SPL. It's the same however that explains why we had Massimo, instead of a big Serie A side.

The only consistent quality Samaras has is inconsistency. I expect he'll start on his own up front on Thursday, and run riot ;~)

Wizard Of Oz

I see you have sprunf to the defence of Niall Mcginn, citing that he showed for a pass, rarely gave the ball away, and got past his man to give a good cross into the box.

Allow me to respond.

He did indeed, show for a pass. As did the rest of the team, as do all well-paid footballers (unless they are injured). There is a difference, though, between, showing for a pass, and putting on a show to show for a pass.

On your second point, your train has already hit the buffers, for it was the fact that Mcginn DID give the ball away, on several occasions, and in a variety of ways, that gave this poster much cause to thrust his head in his hands.

He got past his man and put a good cross in the box - a two-part claim. Guess which part I agree with and guess which part I don't!

On the Killen/Samaras thing, you'll find me firmly in your band (somewhere at the back, playing the euphonium - I never could master those triangle cues). Then again, Samaras was terrible yesterday, and his goal WAS just offside (I see he's picking up from where he left off last year, and talking a good game to the press) and yes, my tin headgear is at the ready.

But yes, please. Start Killen and Samaras.

My eyes are fine. The view's much clearer when you take the scales off!

Bankiebhoy1DiarmudGavinEmeraldCSC

I have to say that the linesman running along the North Stand was an absolute disgrace on Saturday.

Chops off a goal for an imaginery offside. His fag didn't go up until he realsied the ball had crept in at the far post.

He allows Samaras to run 40yards to pick up a ball that looked like he wouldn't keep from going wide. When he realsies Sammy has kept the ball in and has a free run in on goal, he puts his flag up for offside.

It was pretty obvious he was a Hun! He will have been pleased with his days work.

The match hinged on these decisions, especially the Samaras "goal", which had it stood, we would have most likely have been looking at 3pts and talking about an excellent substitution and the fact we can win matches and still play badly (the sign of a good team!!)

The positives from the game were the perfomance of Artur and Niall McGinn, the latter having a effortless gliding technique when going past players. I really enjoyed his style of play and see him as a great prospect. Just needed the forward(s) to make better timed diagonal runs and we surely would have taken advantage of his direct running and passing through the DDU defence.

I'll not mention the negatives, we all who and know what they are!

Up Over Goal, I take your points on board. To be honest i'd be more willing to mitigate on behalf of Landry becomes I think he has performed well for the majaority of the season so far and as you say he did have an exhausting round-trip prior to the game. In Broonie's case however, he never had an injury last season n he didn't have a first touch or killer ball then, I just think he is technically limited, put it this way, wat kind of player is he going to be in his 30s when he loses his pace?I just don't think he is effective as our supposed big money centre midfielder.
As to the rest, my pass marks were Artur, Fox, Hinkel, Crosas. Though wee Shaun was fairly mixed bag, needs to start producing and stop living off the back of his one excellent season under WGS. Also another thing is that players like Brown and he are stil labelled youngsters, a fequently over-used term at Parkhead to denote lads who are in the 23-25 bracket, these are MEN and they need to deliver as such.
I like the new burd analogy regarding Aiden and Niall and perhaps it is the novelty but I think his direct play gives us a wholyl different dimension on the flanks. Not saying by any means he's better than Mcgeady just provides a different option and a bit of much needed pace.

weeminger

Your point is a good one. A seriously weakened Rangers leaves us with no real opposition and impedes our progress in Europe. To be fair it was the same argument that they put forward during their 9 in a row - that they had no real domestic challenge and thus suffered in Europe as a consequence.

My point is that we had debt of less than £1m. Winning the League and automatic CL entry would have seen the coffers increase by £10-15million. We would have been able to afford a better quality of player to entertain us each week domestically and to ensure that we made the CL each year for the next 5 years. We are now playing Russian Roulette with neither the League or CL qualification a given. Not being League Champions makes us less attractive to new players and worse still new sponsors when the current shirt deal expires. Make no mistake this Board should not be let off the hook. Their poor performance last season can harm us for years to come.

Obviously I meant to say "flag" as I'm pretty sure he wasn't smoking during the game, unless possibly a joint, though that might explain the time delay when raising his flag!

Europa league tickets

If your German you can get a 3 match package for 33 euro, 60 euro or 129 euro depending on the seat. Children can get for as little as 18 euro for all 3 games. Single game tickets are all different with Celtic being by far the dearest of the 3.

Rapid have very similar prices (slightly cheaper)25 right through to 100 euro.

Some difference in that concession tickets really are concession prices with these teams.

Samaras - I spent July in Greece, not one Greek football fan I spoke to thought he was any good. Most used adjective was lazy. I would love to think that we have got the guy who scored at Killie or in Moscow but how often does that player turn up?

Rudderless/leaderless - Did anyone look out on Saturday and see the man who would drive us on?
Didn't think so.
What depresses me more is young McGinn showed more drive than senior, so called stalwarts. Makes you pine for Hartley and Robson, in fact I think a fit Robson playing centre mid as captain is beginning to look necessity, definately at Mordor.

When is Maloney going to morph into the Lubo clone he aspired to? He seems like the player Darren Fletcher was on about last week, the sort that thinks it is OK to occasionally turn it on.
It's not Shaun, you play for Celtic F.C., you need to win every game, certainly at Celtic Park!
And why is he still taking free kicks?

I still believe we will prevail but I think we need a testerone fuelled, cajones oot, will and desire to succeed currently not there at the moment.

eurochamps67, Kojo and allthe other Molly bashers

Please desist.

Shaun Maloney, along with Fox and Caddis, was one of the few players who deserves praise at the end of that match.

I agree about his corners/free kicks. He should be nowhwre near them.

But his skill, passing and runs WITH AN END PRODUCT make him one of Celtic's best players.

If you're looking for a player with guts and a gung-ho attitude, then, to be sure, you're looking in the wrong place. There are others who should be able to perform that role.

I hate to steer too close to the truth with a metaphor, but if you want rid of Molly, you are throwing out the baby with the bathwater, and no mistake!

up over goal.
During and after the match on Sturday I don't recall speaking to anyone who was anything other than complimentary about McGinn on his debut.
I was reasonably happy with his performance and as I have said previously, he may have received further praise had there been anyone available to attack the crosses he put in.
You will have your opinion on him....from DUFF to DIRE is how you put it I believe.
I thought the boy did alright and would have shown up better alongside a striker with an aerial(sp) threat.
C'est la vie.

watching STV, is hinkel on drugs?

No mention on STV of the Darren Dods handball in injury time.... However a slow motion close-up of his handball at the free-kick.
Wonder why?

This has been bothering me since last night and all day today....

Last night at 10:03pm whitedoghunch posted another of his cryptic and somewhat insulting messages about easily being able to raise the funds required to get Kano home.

The message has now been removed.

If true I could happily ignore the remarks about those who have been fundraising being fools - those of you who read it last night will know what I'm talking about.

But here's the rub. This guy has been posting on CQN for at least as long as I've been reading/posting - about 2 years. I understand he is known to several posters on here so I don't believe he is a Rangers fan at the wind up.

On the other hand, his posts on the subject of fundraising for Kano have been utterly appalling.

Can anyone who knows him shed any light on what he thinks he's doing?

SwanseaBhoy

Uefa need to be stronger. They have just granted eduardo his appeal and he will now not serve any ban. What kind of example are they setting? I'm disgusted.

To be fair i expected much more criticism ,than i received.

EN felt that my comment was doing the work of the red tops and that it was harmfull to Celtic, therefore i shouldn't have posted it.

I didn't actually argue the point because it was one that i considered valid.

I could have posted more information, but my source would have been at risk.

Mr Mowbray did not know the sequence of the events until after they unfolded.

My source told me that he was going to resign ,but had a change of heart.

Mindblowing stuff if true.

Wizard Of Oz

If it makes you feel any better, I'll give Niall a D for...

Duff!

As I have said before, there is little point in skipping past one, two, or even three players, if, at the end of such a feat, you give the ball away via an abject trickly pass to no one, or a shot that misses by a yard or a mile.

If you give the ball away, they've got the ball. If they've got the ball, we can't score, but they can.

I don't care if the entire South Stand was enraptured by his play. I saw what I saw. Some of it was good. More of it was bad.

If he turns in a good performance, I will be only too pleased to change my opinion of Mcginn.

Wizard Of Oz

I didnt think we would see the hand ball in the box, that was more of a hand ball than the one awarded for the free kick when we scored.

Now seen the Samaras goal on big screen, on side.

"Eduardo appeal accepted

The UEFA Appeals Body today accepted the appeal lodged by Arsenal FC against the two-match suspension handed to striker Eduardo.

'Not established'
Following examination of all the evidence, notably the declarations of both the referee and the referees' assessor, as well as the various video footage, it was not established to the panel's satisfaction that the referee had been deceived in taking his decision on the penalty.

Decision annulled
Therefore, the decision of the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body of 1 September, in which the player was suspended for two UEFA club competition matches, is annulled."

Can you recap? I missed your original post

Up over goal

I'm a fan of Shaun's ability and technique but not a fan of his application at times.
He has been given a second chance to don the hoops.
He knows what it like to play beside Henrik, Lubo, Sutton, Lennon etc etc.
He knows, or should know, what it takes to be a Celtic MAN.
What I question is the wee man's attitude and application.
None of the above names would disappear as readily as I believe Shaun does when all is not going on the park.

Howevehhhhhhh...

The Best Rule.. the One Rule that Rules them all..

" A Player is only as Good As His Last Performance".

If you are aware of how I operate...

You must know.. that I honestly judge a Player oan his present Performance, the actual one which I am viewing.

I have no respect for any of his LAST PERFORMANCES..

That would be silly.

It may or not have reached your attention

I suppose that is why I refer to it.. as RARE..

Here is my Isolated Idiosynrasy...

" I Do not remain MARRIED FOREVER, to a previous Opinion"

Whether that Opinion is A High one or a Low One.

My Former very High Opinion of MR. N'Guemo has been Lowered, muchly.

Owing to Mr.N'Guemo's last TWO Strangely Hesitant and Lethargic Performances..

Those Lacklustre Performances seem to co-incide with the shock
that Mr.N'Guemo is obviously suffering from.. as he experiences

at

First Hand.. the Type of Frenetic, almost, Adagio Frenzy, which is the Descriptive term that I use to describe the Tempo and the Hustle and Bustle that one must be willing to adapt to, in a typical S.P.L. encounter.

If Mr.N'Guemo, shows me that he can and is willing to UP his game.. in order to combat this new.. to him. . change of circumstances..

Then.. and only, Then..

Shall I be willing to reconsider my present opinion of him.

Maks sense tae me.

Good old UEFA...!!!.....you're really going to wipe this practise out now....!!!

up_over_....,
McGinn was my MOTM, as far as I could see he was our only threat, all decent attacks came through him, with no one in the box it was a waste of time crossing so a corner or short pass into the middle were his only options, when he made the short pass into the middle we could actually see the lack of cohesion in our mid and attack trying to play tippy tappy football and failed big time, thats when the ball was lost and rarely his problem.
I thought he and herr hinkle linked up very well and I expected one of them to score, its just a pitty hinkle never took a shot he tried to get too cute instead of just having a go.
Our biggest problem IMO is we waste 5 mins of prematch warmup shots, whats the point if they are not going to have a go during the game, instead of shots maybe we should give them bags of money and let them count it, it seems to be all they are good at.

I have met Whitedoghunch.

He was friendly, indeed charming.Helpfull ,engaging and polite.A really nice bloke.

Last nights post was his second this weekend disparaging those that are fundraising for Kano.

I took him to task over it on Friday and Saturday with regards to his posts.

He has not apologised for any of it,and indeed some of the committee who are raising funds for Kano felt that i and others should cut him some slack,as he had previously helped the cause.

WDH has his own medical problems to deal with,a few months ago he also suffered a major personal bereavement. So i understand where they are coming from, but his comments and total arrogance with regards to them are incomprehensible to me.

I asked him to show some remorse ,indeed some class, and make ammends for his comments.

His response was to make smart arsed, psuedo intellectual comments.

I have not read his further comment of 10.03 last night, but his obnoxious arrogance seems to know no bounds.

I believe that he should get himself some counselling, and rediscover the bloke that i first met.

I will probably be slaughtered for having another go at him ,but i repeat .

Those defending him ,are not helping him.

P.S. What was the 10.03 comment?

I was told by a good source that during the tranfser window Roy Keane called Stephen Mcmanus and asked him to name his terms to join Ipswich.
McManus told him that he should contact Celtic.

Keane confirmed he had already done this, and agreed a fee with Celtic.

McManus took it up with Mr Mowbray who told him he was as shocked as he was.

Mr Mowbray was said to be dismayed( thats putting it mildly) at the turn of events.

This is all hearsay from a normally reliable source ,but a couple of days after i was told .The story broke in The Guardian.

Well said, McGinn was MOTM.
Why don't we shoot?
Time and again we look to pass and/or walk the ball into the net.
At least Skippy will attempt to shoot.
On Saturday Shaun was directly in front of goal, 18 yards out and decided to pass to N'Guemo, who was running away from goal, at pace, towards the byeline and did well to retrieve a corner.
Sammi appears to have to run the ball into the net.
Andy H always passes, why no more attempts like his opening goal for us last season, a pure rasper so it was,
Why no' "huv a dig?"

Wizard Of Oz 6:23 PM

Yep Raman & co gave us slow mo close-up of the handball that lead to our free-kick, although at least they never described it as "controversial" like the BBC did

The BBC also describe the free-kick that led to our goal as "disputed". Watch the footage of the most obvious handball it is possible to get in the history of world football and work that one out.

Levein also reported as raging in the BBC commentary. The commentator stops short of saying "and quite rightly so" but was obviously desperate to do so.

The STV report tonight informed us "Samaras's strike was ruled out for offside".

Note not "controversially" ruled out, or "wrongly" or even "debatably". Obviously they feel that the decision was correct, unlike everyone else with functioning eyesight.

And what I can only accurately describe, as a fantastic diving save worthy of Lev Yashin by Dundee Utd defender Darren Dods, was not even deemed worthy of any coverage or mention, far less a slow mo close-up.

We all know there would have been hell to pay with calls for video evidence to be used had it happened up at the other end, or another Glasgow team who play in blue had fell victim to such a decision.

In this case, the video evidence is there, but nestled nicely under the carpet.

Utterly pathetic.

The BBC website also enthusiastically reports Levein's "fury" at the aforementioned "debatable" free-kick in contrast to emphasising that BTM said the draw was "a fair result"

It's about time our own manager started highlighting instances such as these, as the "impartial" Scottish media sure as hell aren't going to start now. And to hell with the inevitable accusations of paranoia. At least make them answer for their twisted bias reporting.

Folks, don't get to log in that often can someone tell me how I sponsor the cyclists for Kano?

Eduardo wins his Appeal

Larry.bhoy 6:53 PM

I'm looking forward to all the huns who said that Aiden should have the book thrown at him "just like Eduardo" , agreeing that he should never have been suspended and the SPL should be made to pay Celtic compensation

My mate has just phoned me to tell me about the decision to quash Eduardo's bann for diving. Can anyone tell me the grounds for it? Obviously Arsenal (and the EPL?) have more power with UEFA than the Scots are supposed to have according to Wenger. Utterly daft situation they have created now. They have given the green light to cheating.

Gagsy

If you drop Paul 67 an e-mail (link at top of page) he'll pass your e-mail to MWD abd he'll be in touch with you.

TinyTim

Quite shocking if true.

I do remember TM rubbishing the story with some contempt

ESPN have shown the hand ball incident and also the hand ball for Hamilton Accies penalty yesterday.

Out for the two ours was the most obvious hand ball.

Arsenal win appeal for Eduardo.

The 2 match ban should have been replaced by the mandatory yellow card as he did dive but to ban him for two games wasn't the correct decision.

SFA in limbo now.

This incident has highlighted SFA incompetence, my hope is that Celtic's hands are clean re: protest to UEFA.

This could be used as a way of forcing out Peat and Smith.

Parkheadcumsalford 7.17

Arsenal said that they were able to show UEFA that there had been contact.

Paul67,

The BBC and STV coverage of the key moments from Saturday's game warrants an article, in my humble view. Disgracefully one sided review for the watching public to form a fair assessment.

As does UEFA's capitulation to the Emirates diver. The world has gone mad, mad, mad. There hasn't been a clearer "guilty as charged" offender in recent times. Football lost in the UEFA appeal court today.

You wait for a bus for ages and then two come along at once...:)

Thanks Twists and turns will do.

My point being that if Smith and Peat did go above Celtic's head in this matter then they would be going above their station and doubles their incompetence.

They've already been shown to have out-dated and old-fashioned views on the subject and dare I say out of touch (with UEFA and the rest of the Football World and I don't include the racist media in that world either) as well.

Kojo @ 6:44 PM,

Always imagine you're a hard task master!

@ least you gave Petrov a period of time 'afore he descended into you're journeymen category!

TRUE

He had a track record & Although we differed @ the time - hindsight says you were correct, our friend Stan had lost interest in the Great Glasgow Celtic – an anomalous characteristic for all right minded fholks!

BUT

N’Geumo has given us some fine performances and is settling in a new League in a new Country!

SO

Why don’t you give the bhoy a chance – I think he’ll come good!

The danger in the post is that i am passing it on second hand.I could justifiably be accussed of telling tales in the playground.

The one thing i am sure off is that my source is certain the story is true.My source is a good one.

Larrybhoy......brilliant....!!!!!!!!!!!!

gebhoy - I think you completly missed the point I was making mate. My point is playing 1 up front is not a negative tactic. In fact it is fast becoming the norm in world football. How you deploy the rest of the players is what governs the tactic to be negative or positive. Do Man Utd play negative football? Barcelona? They both play 1 up front, at home, against anyone. This 1 up front being negative in my opinion has been started by those loonie radio phone ins in an attempt to get Rangers fans on last year when they were employing the direst flavour of the 451. They agd a reason to complain. Our 451 on Saturday (or more accurately 4231) was much more open and designed to score goals rather than frustrate the opposition.

So there doesn't have to be a need to "justify" us playing one up front as there is nothing wrong with that. 451 is not a negative tactic if the striker is being supported adequatly by the midfield. Carry on and read the rest of the exchange between me, penang_bhoy, Eyes Wide Open etc and you will see the point I am making.

Now whether we have the players to employ that tactic is a whole different argument, writing the tactic off as inherently negative is plain wrong.

Guys

We wouldnt still be discussing the Eduardo dive if the English media hadnt hyped it beyond belief. The Arsenal game is history and that tie was lost over much more than the penalty decision.

Do we want to dwell on all the decisions we dont get or kid ourselves on that justice exists in football?

We have a Europa League game coming up - Focus Focus....

Tonybananas @7:17 - Aye, so am I - also waiting for Arsene Wenger now saying " well, yes, of course he dived, but thats not the point "

tonybananas - I'm as tired of the casual bias of the referees and the press as anyone, however I believe we do ourselves no favours at all. I watched the McGeady sending off last week with the same utter disbelief that I'm sure everyone felt. However the disbelief for me was more about the utter lack of any objection, argument or fight from our team over what was clearly a grossly unfair decision, and this scenario I see played out nearly every week.

Is it any surprise that referees feel entirely comfortable with a casual sending off, or denying a clear penalty for us when the first line of objection, the players on the pitch, shows very little fight. The players' reactions set the agenda for the entire way the incident is reported, why would a newspaper say Samaras' chalked off goal was "controversial" when our players didn't even seem to think so?

I've seen these decisions go against Man Utd, Chelsea, even rangers, and their player will take it in turns to harangue the referee, each one dealing abuse just short of a yellow card before walking away for another to take over. This is a trick which Celtic players do not seem clued up on.

We need to get cuter, we need to use the angles that others have absolutely no qualms about exploiting. I have all the time in the world for the "Respect" campaign but while it's not a level playing field, and more importantly while it's not reciprocated by refs, we need to play the game like everyone else does.

One of my favourite quotes from Catch 22 springs to mind. When our pacifist protangonist's attitude to war is frowned upon he is asked - "What if everyone acted like you do?", to which he replies "Then I'd be a damn fool to act any different."

tiny tim

i don`t believe that you know WDH well enough to pass comment upon his character , nevermind post about his very personal circumstances

as for taking him to task ...what you posted was simple abuse

you were clearly annoyed by the exchange earlier in the day and used his post on Thursday night as an opportunity to traduce him in some lame attempt at pay back

as for counselling ...give a rest mate ..you know not what you type

Apologies if I got this wrong...
Is there not a TV interview with John Hartson
being shown on ITV @ 8:00..?
I was sure I read it on here, can't see it in any listings

4 Games in - how are our new players getting on...

Fox: Better than Naylor (obviously)that wouldnt be hard. He still has to work on his delivery and we will see a proper test of his defending capabilities in the Europa League games & against Gers. A breath of fresh air after 2 stale season watching Nayls. Still think he will improve and could be a regular for years to come if he can make the step up to playing European football.

N'Guemo: Started off superbly but has faded in last couple of games. Buck up your ideas chum. Win those 50-50 balls, fight for the full 90 minutes and stop giving the ball away. Mowbray is right to say that the Jury is still out and he is in no way ready to make this deal permanent. I have high hopes that we will and that he can be a star for us in years to come.

Fortuné: Patchy start to his Celtic Career. I still only see him as a squad player. He should play in those games against better opposition where we need to hold the ball up to allow the other striker or midfielders to get forward. Still looks a bit clumsy in possession and question marks over his finishing ability remain. He needs to keep doing what he is doing and score some more goals. As I mentioned last night - we dont want a 'Kenny Miller against Holland moment' - where, in an important game, 1 critical chance falls to him and he doesnt have the finishing ability to put it away. However he may well come good and prove to be a good acquisition.

I know its early days and there is a lot of football to be played but lets hope these guys help us to the SPL and the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

Hail Hail

Regarding the suggestions that we signed the Chinese guy to "sell jerseys", I wonder how realistic this would be.

If we say a jersey costs £50 and the guy earns ten grand a week, we need to sell 200 jerseys a week just to cover his wages.

Selling ten thousand jerseys a year would still leave us short of two weeks wages.

TV rights would make it worthwhile if there was interest on the scale that Naka had, but that depends upon him being a good enough player to hold down a place in the team.I don't even know what the i

If he was a donkey, that would be a waste of time as we would be worse than a man short.

I would think that the more likely scenario is that TM sees that he has something about him, there is no transfer fee and he is keen to re-start his career. That, for me, makes ZZ worth a punt and any possible commercial benefits are just a side issue.

In addition, if it means I never see Sammi playing on the left side of midfield again, that would be a tremendous bonus.

I would also like to know why Niall McGinn was left on the field for half an hour suffering from cramp when Caddis could have been put on to the right midfield position.

RRC

Not sure where you're watching from but perhaps it's on the Tonight programme that starts at 8 p.m.

Defo on here in Scotland on ITV to the best of my knowledge.

RRC : STV have not bought into a lot of ITV programmes. It might be only on STV, or alternatively, if it is an STV produced programme, the nationals may not have it.

ggh

Sorry, if it is a national programme, STV might not show it.

Liked yir posts.

While in the immediate aftermath of a match its advisable not to go aff oan wan at any perceived injustice,ad like tae see him bring it up at the next press conference.

Ad like Tony to question at that press conference why a referee with an unobstructed view can fail to dee a clear handball in the penalty area.

Ad like Tony to question why Hugh Dallas has not furnished his explanation(maybe he will effter the nights bbc highlights)as promised for this seasons controversial decisions.

Tony strikes me as being too nice, maybe that will change with a few mare decisions like Saturdays non penalty.

If yiv got a bad taste in yir mouth dont swally it spit it out.

Too many for too long swally it.

Being nice gets yae newhere they will continue tae stand oan yir neck unless yae stand up.

Paranoia ad take that accusation oh dae long tae bring pressure oan officialdom.

Conroy is a coward wannabee top ref,an award albeit a correct one at that time in the gemme wid go against him.

He knows were eez beids buttered.

oisin79,
Is it not the case that the linesman is not allowed to flag till the player touches the ball?
I believe it is and that it's a rule calculated to infuriate all football supporters.
There must be a reason for it (if indeed I'm right) but I'm jiggered if I know what it might be.

To get STV

1) Press "Services" on your Sky Remote and a list of 8 or 9 selections will appear.

2) Press "4" or scroll down to highlight selection number 4 which is "Add Channels". Another menu will appear displaying Frequency, Polarization, Symbol Rate and FEC.

3) Change the Frequency by tapping in the five numbers 10906.

4) Change the Polarization to "V" using your left or right curser on your remote control.

5) Change the Symbol Rate to 22.0 using your left or right curser on your remote control.

6) Change the FEC number to display 5/6 using your left or right curser on your remote control.

7) Move your curser to highlight "Find Channels" at the bottom of the menu and press "Select".

8) You will now see a list of available channels including STV. Simply highlight STV and press the yellow button. A tick will now appear next to STV. Press "Select" again to store STV.

9) Press "Back Up" several times to come out of all the menus until you get your Sky picture again.

10) Whenever you wish to watch STV in the future simply press "Services" on your remote control which will bring up the menu. Press "9" or scroll down to highlight selection 9 which is "Other Channels" and you will then be able to highlight STV and press "Select" to watch.

In my Lexicon..there is nae room fur the phrase.. "Second Chance."

All the Great Professionals, in carrying out their Day tae day joabs..

Take Dick Turpin..f'rinstance..

When he issued his inimitable command..

"Staun an' Deliver, ye bunch o' wee Bachles!(Hey, wait a minute.. Dick Turpin wiz an Englishman!..he didnae talk like that..Ed)( Ye ur right, he was an Englishman, but he grew up in Partick!)

The Wee Bachles... They Delivered.. and with extreme alacrity!

Jist like a said.

Nae Second Chance..

Ye dae it right the Foist Time or ye suffer the consequences!

Take Godot, f'rinstance..and he is the Epitome of how Professional a Professional should be.

He told Mr. Adam and Miss Eve..not to partake of the Fruits of the Tree of Knowledge or the Tree of Good an Evil.( Wur they no Mairried, after awe?)( Of course, they Wurnae... and that's anither thing that Ah wull get intae, at anither time!)

When they disobeyed his demanded commands..

Nae Second Bites at the Aipple(?), fur them!

You have no idea what was going through my head or my so called motivation.

You are completely wrong.

I am not the only one who found his comments disgracefull.

So i guess everyone else was just having a go at him also.

I have a friend who has cycled miles upon miles in training, just to be able to complete yesterdays cycle.

He along with others are donating their personal time and monies to get another fundraising event up and running,to help Kano. They are not twits as he called them.

They deserve much better.

You may not like me or my comments, but do not try and tell me what was going on in my own mind.

None of my posts were deleted .

His were.

Your are very very wrong on my motivation for the post.

You seem to like to have a go at me.

Why?

pggtips - I agree, the two match ban was ridiculous and opened a whole can of worms regarding any type of retrospective punishment that was over an above what would have been received during the match.

If they had just given him the yellow card, I doubt Arsenal would have made so much fuss, and it's still a possible deterent as it could ultimately result in a ban.

Just watched the first part of the BBJ programme.

I love him all the more now.

But lessons to be learned for many males I guess.

tiny tim

take the chip off your shoulder

i commented as i saw it

you were entitled to disparage WDH`s comment

but you had no justification for the personal abuse that you dished out ...

i suppose the fact that you had a had a spat earlier had nothing to do with it ...aye right ...i prefer to look at the facts and draw my own conclusions

as for having a go at you ..come on ...i have more in common with your views on the way Celtic are being run than i do with most on here.... if i don`t agree with you i`ll tell you

btw ..i have no hesitation in believing your info re McManus

Get well soon Big John.

So Eduardo gets his ban overturned then thus showing that for all their big talk about cleaning up the game uefa are completely ineffective. Arsenal were a better side than Celtic unquestionably so why did they resort to blatant cheating. If the shoe had been on the other foot and a Celtic player had dived to win a penalty the controversy would still be raging up to today. If I were in charge at celtic I'd seriously think about telling uefa to stuff their europa league for this season, let's be honest all it is is a sop to keep the tv channels happy and give one of the smaller teams or countries a chance of European glory. As for Arsenal I was glad man United thumped them and Man City ansd quite honestly hope they have a miserable season. Doesn't help celtic in the slightest but stuff them. They cheated and uefa have condoned their actions thus allowing any other team to do the same.

Very moving, thank god he is on the mend

tiny tim

just read your reply again

do you think that you know WDH well enough to post his personal circs for consumption by all and sundry

i don`t believe that you answered that

Just watched the BBJ programme.
That can't have been an easy thing to do.

God Bless You, Big Man.
Get Well.

For the poeple who didn't see the programme, John was looking as well as can be expected. He is not out of the woods yet, but has seen a dramatic improvement in his condition after several bouts of chemotherapy, of which he has still has some to through. He talked of the Celtic family and wished to personally thank everyone who sent their best wishes to him.

mr1967 - you took the words from my mouth. UEFA should hang their collective heads in shame, and the Arsenal Club Spokesman who came out with this rubbish -

"A club statement read: 'We are grateful that the appeal body focused on the evidence and made the right decision in this case.

'We were able to show that there was contact between the goalkeeper and Eduardo and that the decision of the UEFA disciplinary body should be annulled.

'We fully support the drive for fair play in football and believe it is important that UEFA provide clear and comprehensive standards that will be consistently enforced going forward."

should do so too. Lies, all lies. Sick to the stomach at hearing this news. UEFA condone cheating. Shameful.

Are we too nice as a club?
I mean this in respect to our apparent lack of protest at decisions that are wrongly given against us.
Now , on the park, I can understand the players reticence to a certain extent. Take Saturday as an example. The one occasion Celtic players did get upset at the weekend was for a late challenge on one of our players (Broony?). McDonald took exception to it and the referee, despite it being an absolutely shocking challenge, took the decision to produce the yellow card and show it to McDonald first, and then the Utd player afterwards, thus sending out a message that any form of reaction was to be punished (and at the same time demonstrating incompetence on the part of the referee.) I also recollect that Skippy got booked last year against Aberdeen at home, for complaining about being fouled. My feeling is that the Celtic players complain less because they have a genuine fear of being booked for raising their voices. They seem to know that any player in Hoops getting too uppity will be dealt with harshly.

As for off the field, I think eventually even Tony Mowbray will say enough's enough, when it happens once too often, as it invariably will over the course of the season.

Personally, I think the club should be employing someone in a media liaison capacity to be a bit more pro-active on this issue. That way, Tony can publicly deal with the aftermatch football talk, while a pro-active stance can be taken by another "Celtic spokesperson", highlighting the decisions that otherwise are glossed over.

If anyone in the club is looking in, I will be retired /unemployed soon. I offer my sevices in this capacity, for a nominal fee. ;-)

reading peoples posts and wondering how they are is part of the cqn for me.

last night i read a post that made me realise that person needs assistance,

totally out of order post !!!!! whether its out of context or out of sinc with their normality.

we dont all think the same, we arent all the same, but to disparage in that way was in poor taste

mackybhoy from the village - thanks, saw your post from late last night- go on the danza...

you're right sadly The Rock not in the 5 day decs for Ayr on Saturday. I had a little nibble before your original post. C'est la vie

TerryO

what astounds me is that we seem to continually accept this bias without comment

consider the way that Wenger has fought that wee cheating scumbag Eduardo`s corner

how do you think Ferguson /Smith et al would have taken it

make Conroy realise his error by publicity he`ll think twice about major decisions the next time he refs us

imo they hate us anyway ..we`ve nothing to lose

Censorship

Positive discrimination

Tubthumping

Thinly veiled attacks

And the odd bit of Charidee

Read all about it here

So many on here now seem not only 'up' for a fight or prone to fighting but as to be absolutely hellbent on having one

Decency is gone - replaced by a throng who seem insightful beyond belief at analysing the content and intent of everyone else's posts and yet not their own...

The deletion of posts by appointed board mavens was/is the beginning of the end

Because now we have moved away from content - ie swearing and libel (I believe were the pillars of its building)...

... To context - that mercurial, ever changing fabled G spot of the written word...

And so to WDH - no swearing, no Anti-Kano outbursts - twits and fools was his prognosis (One which I personally will never understand and a prognosis arrived at with what looks like little evidence - except maybe a hunch - his and his alone) of the collective fundraisers.

Ill mannered? It would seem so.

Any worse than than some other posts over the past few weeks?

Not by a long chalk!

Just context.

And now we've got PF sizing up to Tinytim, and by the time I write and post this God knows what.

I could not belittle the efforts of those involved with the efforts
to get Kano home - I consider a lot of them my friends - but others could and can and may do - such is life.

But sub context and the notion of sensitivity, around a man who could at times blowtorch people's views, lead to posts being deleted.

And that's a crack'd looking glass.

It's plain wrong.

Oh for the days of self deletion - that wee bin saved many a face.

Now we have the faceless.

Is abbondanza declared at the 5 day stage?

garygillespieshamstring

i heard someone on grown up radio talking about football in china, he said theres only 3 clubs from britain who have any profile out there and thats man united, leeds and celtic. no one will make any money from shirt sales in china but the fact that man united have been out there a couple of times in recent years suggests its worth the effort of trying to take advantage of our profile

theres over a billion people in china, thats a massive amount of boys playing football. its the second largest economy in the world, growing at an amazing rate. someone at celtic wouldnt be doing their job if they werent looking at ways of making money for our club, or identifying talent out there. it might not sit well with some but as long as no one is forcing the manager to pick someone he doesnt want to i dont see a problem with signing the chinese national captain for business reasons. not that i think thats why he's been signed.

PF Ayr

In retrospect possibly not,but there were previously several public messages of condolence posted on this site.Mine amongst them.

I will remove the chip.I take on board what you have said.

You are still wrong as to my motivation.

I felt that he was insulting ,some very good people who deserve better.Simple as.

Can you not see why some would find his initial and further comments,as highly insulting?

If he hadn't made the crass remarks in the first instance there would be no need for myself and quite a few others to have to make comment.

i need energie cottbus to save my day, (2-3 with 10 to go)

I think I might need to change my handle to the Centre midfielder or the centre forward. Centre mid I thought was sorted. Then Scot Brown walks back in and all and sundry are poor again. Scot was poor against Hibs.Celtic were poor. N'Guemo had his first few suspect passes. Brown was excellent for Scotland against macedonia. Brown is forrest gump. Barry Robson at a quarter of the price is twice the player and can hit a free kick. Robson is not a great passer of the ball but definetly not the burst pipe that is scott brown.
Also, how hard can it be for any one of celtics forward players to sit and watch a few snippets of danny fox delivering not to get the message to taper runs to the back post? IN fact most of them are about 7 feet in the air about 5 yards right of the pen spot parallel to the 6 yard box. Honestly how hard can it be?

Mr C

Eduardos not a cheat. Are we going to have to have clear ground between the divers and the tacklers to find the cheats guilty?
Wenger prompted this one by asking them to review the video footage again, citing Arturs knee as the offending body part. Cheating is abhorrent. It is unacceptable that a message has been sent that deception is ok. Expect kids to keep falling over in our parks like eduardo.

ulysses mcghee:

There is the possibility that WDH requested his 'posts' be 'removed'.

Re: content. There are members of Kano's direct family reading these pages. From time to time Kano's dad drops in.

I did not think his posts were offensive but I do think they were insensitive at the least and possibly distressing too, depending who was reading the words.

He will forever have to answer for what he posted, until he does I can't understand his motivation, nobody can unless he has explained it to them.

If he can help Kano in any way, I would welcome that help. If he can’t, so be it, no big deal, but to be openly hostile or bitter depending on how you wish to construe his words did not do him any favours and most certainly did not do justice to the efforts of so many.

The only one with any explaining to do is WDH, it is up to him whether he does it or not.

oh! and I almost forgot U.M. if you own keyboard has put you in check, if your skipping fingers have deceived your best intents, you can always 'ask' for your post to be removed via a moderator.

Hi Rogue Leader and Penang_Bhoy.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, had a few things to do there.

Rogue, Il accept your point of view regarding Samaras, there have been too many guys in the game who have shared your view, Mr Wenger being one (once upon a time apparently).

Howevahhh..

Its not up to us to coax perfomances out of a player on our staff, its up to the player to prove he is worthy of the extortionate pay cheque.

Its not up to the us to change systems and formations to try and find one that suits him, will centre around him so as to get his confidence up. Its up to the player to change his own game if that is what is required, to ensure that he remains or gets in favour with the manager, whether that is Ross Wallace and playing left back, or Chris Sutton and doing a shift in midfield or defence if he is asked.

Its not up to a manager to spend a disproportionate time with one player trying to massage the ego thats in there somewhere and whisper sweet nothings into his ear to get his confidence up, therefore spending less time with the bulk of the squad.

BTM picking him for the home game against Arsenal was the biggest confidence booster that anyone could have given him, even he didnt expect to be picked. He got it, he would have walked out feeling 10 feet tall, then..... he flopped, yet again.

We have tried for far far far too long to get performances from this fake pretender and imitation footballer. A footballers career at the top is what, say 11-12 years? We have spent almost 2 years with him, so not far off 20% of his career at 'the top', waiting, and because we were given a brief brief glimpse somewhere in the middle we want to continue waiting?

Sorry buddy, I respect your opinion, as I always will try to do, but I can not accept any notion of anything that includes Samaras and Celtic continuing in the same sentence.

pggtips2:

mate, I'm way over on the other coast but depends what you want to do over there. There is a very big Celtic Supporters Club, and Ramie and Kano too.

I believe it's been deleted/removed.

JungleJim, TBH mate, this ain't doing anyone any favours. I think we should all just let it go. It's far too emotional on so many levels and things are being said when very few (if any) are privvy to all the facts from both sides.

Well said amigo.

How are you?

Mr. Pablo Fanque
Are you on S, or not in the nearest future?

Kit - I said last night that WDH is sailing his own ship on this one - and I am not defending what he said.

The moving hand having writ and all that.

Yes, we can, if so driven, ask for a foolish, or insensitive, or downright nasty post to be removed. But I strongly feel that until we, you or I, the author, do ask, then that post should stand.

It's a big, emotive issue and it will either be personally resolved or resolved by the mists of time and memory.

It's better for us all if we move on from this one, I suppose.

There are some massive mines. Maybe you should think about contacting Rio Tinto or BHP and seeing if you can't get yourself a tour of one.

I've been on a couple of mines where 'visitors' have been allowed access to things that site workers weren't.

Some of those mines are awesome in their size.

Fair enough ,bhoys. I was one of the cyclists and the spirit amongst the team was superb. I was just curious (but not in the slightest angry) about what could be perceived as `foolish` or `twitish` about the whole fund-raising exercise.

Hi mate, not too bad. Busy as at work, but it makes the days go in that bit quicker. Should realy be home, but I'm just catching up on things. Helps to keep me off the demon drink anol :o))

Hope your getting over your loss mate. I know it's far too early, but the memories should help to ease the pain.

Hello WDH
Can`t show you as I haven`t seen it myself but apparently you had described teh fundraisers as being fools and twits. True? Untrue?

Zibi, I'm still in work mate. Prolly gonna move digs this week and I'm looking for a house with 'tinterweb and I hope to be using S when I do. I've lost my cheap minutes for my phone and It's costing me 38ppm to phone home, so S is the sensible thing to do.

Funnily enough, when I was looking at houses today I thought of you because of the S thing and thought it'd be good to catch up. I'll let you know when I get sorted.

JJ, well done to you all for yesterday. I know it's scant consolation, but you couldn't have got a better day in mid-September than you did yesterday. If I'd been home, I'd have been well up for that, although prolly not on my mountain bike ! The difference a racer makes is no-ones business.

It would not be best if we moved on, it would be best if those posts were not written. However, I doubt what he said will be forgotten which may not be fair on him one day.

Everybody makes mistakes in life, a simple sorry doesn’t magic them all okay again, but it sure as hell is hot, is a pretty established and accepted, first step.

If I screw up, I don’t like it but I will put my hand up and acknowledge my mistake. I would have publicly asked for them all to be removed and would have said sorry. That is what I would have done.

We all have issues in life, nobody knows them all. I don’t think there is a single person in my life who does not have a cross or a burden to bear but they don’t lash out with bitterness. And that includes me. We are all human, we all live in society, we all encounter the depressing side to life and we all have to deal with as best we can.

Also he said he may be able to help, those were his words, if he can and is still willing to, then I will accept that help. There is a mate of mine who needs that help, not false promise or for those who are trying to help him, have their efforts ridiculed.

As I said, in my humble opinion, in my capacity for compassion and understanding, WDH has some explaining to do. He can contact me on kitalba@gmail.com when and if he chooses to do so.

i think uefa rules prevent you from getting a drink in a stadium during a champions league game. the emirates normally serves alcohol before kick off and at half time but not on cl nights.

A few tickets remain for the Kano Quiz night on Friday 18th Sept, at Winchester club, Bell Street, Glasgow

Tickets £5 ea (inc Buffet on night). Flexible on team size, (although recommend 5). Prizes for first and second place

Raising the funds to assist Kano and his family has been a long struggle. That struggle has only ever had one objective, to assist in getting Kano back to his family and home. The works are ongoing and as I am sure you are aware labour and material costs fluctuate. I don’t know if we have enough raised to cover all the costs. Heretofore your fellow posters have tried hard, damn hard, to get the readies together. Any additional help is welcome so therefore I personally as a mate of a mate in need ask you are you willing to help us get him home.

You said the other night that you may be able to raise all the necessary funds in as little as four weeks, I actually think that might just be a wee exaggeration, however your confidence may very well not be misplaced so just this once more, I am going to ask you politely, either back your mouth with action or please, just stay away from the issue. kitalba@gmail.com

dennis 47 @ 8.03pm,

no, a player does not have to play the ball before he is deemed to be offside.

A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:
• interfering with play or
• interfering with an opponent or
• gaining an advantage by being in that position

I think that Samara's was offside when he started running, so running in the direction of the ball to try and score constitutes interfering with play and gaining an advantage by being in that position in my book.

So why let him run 40yards at full pelt before flagging. Did the linesman think he was running to retrieve the ball for Dundee United to take the free-kick only to realise when he got to the ball that his intention was to try and score a goal?

No, the linesman was a Hun, plain and simple.

I know mate, I'm sorry if you read my posts that way, that was not my intention.

If we are ever going to argue mate it'll be over a football matter and I don't mind doing that because I doubt we'd ever let it get that far that it would influence mutual respect.

One of my colleagues going to the Hills of Donegal shindig... anyone going?

Bloke-109
Tell your friend to bring plenty of readies. Bundoran is the dearest place in Ireland for a weekend.

Given the opportunity to reflect on the enormity of their decision to retrospectively ban the wee Asrenal cheat I am not surprised UEFA have done a u-turn on this one.

I mentioned on this site my concerns over the decision because I very much doubt if UEFA would have acted as they did had the incident settled the tie overall.

Had the decision stood it would have opened a can of worms that UEFA just don't want to open.

Our tie with Arsenal was effectively over but what would happen the next time when the outcome of a match or tie was determined by an act of cheating?

Calls for replays, bigger bans and ultimately all out war.
The administration of the game would become unmanageable.

We can only hope Arsenal suffer as we did during their CL campaign.

One more point the cheating issue. It's always been part of the game as long as I've attended matches (early 80's). And contrary to the medias slant on the topic British players could teach Johnny a thing or two about cheating. The late Davie Cooper was by far the worst offender. Refer 1986 League Cup Final.

IMO the best way to tackle it would be to punish the club and not the individual player. Because who benefits most if a player cheats and wins a football match?

Has anyone actually manage to get in contact with WDH. This all seems out of character for him considering what I have read over the last couple of years. Surely if it is him posting these idiotic statements then he needs some help. Seriously bhoys I am not joking.

MWD

Has anyone else noticed the timing of WDH's comments?

Tonight for example the ripple he has caused appears to be dying down and suddenly he's back on.Coincidence? I think not. Yes, everyone starts to suggest just letting it lie but the attention seeker feels the need to come back on in attempt to breathe new life into HIS comments.

Keevins,Traynor and the rest would be proud of the way he has gone about his business. A controversial comment and we can get a whole show out of it with WDH being the centre of attention. Well done my friend you succeeded. Just how many comments have been made about your comment over the past 2/3 days? More than about Paul's lead articles? You can claim to be the main man of the site. Your 15 minutes of fame.

Just in case you've not had time to read all the replies to your good self (I'm sure you have though),I'll summarise:

Put up.Shut up.Money. Mouth is.

I know that won't be good enough for you. You strike me as the kind of guy who wants the lead article on this site all about how great you are and a youtube link of you handing over an oversized cheque should you indeed come up with the goods while belittling the guys who have put in so much effort previously. To give you an idea have a look at MWD's post at 10.44. These are the people(and hundreds of others) that you are disrespecting.

Why do you need to 'chat' with celticrollercoaster or anyone else? If you can do it,just do it.Without the fanfare.

And your comment that was recently deleted directed towards kitalba was disgraceful.

Sometimes I admit to finding CQN a little cosy and it can be self- congratulatory at times, too. So perhaps a little of the vitriol, which we are witnessing tonight is necessary and can be seen as a wake up call for us all.
However, there is always one post that shines through like a beacon, pulls us all back together and reminds us why we love this blog so dearly.
I'm with oisin71 on this, "the linesman was a Hun, plain and simple."

To the moderator who deleted whitedoghunchs posts, you've got a bloody cheek.

Shocking bias from the BBC already.

Aa tricolour if ever there was one.

Who's this commentator on Sportscene? Just about exploded when Goodwillie scored, forced some enthusiasm when Skippy equalised, sounds terrified at any Celtic pressure.

If thats not a penalty what is ?

Absolutely unbelievable.

TLWIO

Oh this is getting ridiculous

Wizard Of Oz

ask me

wdh posts...

Strange in the utmost.

Saw them last night also, and still a bit unsure.

At least Murdo had the good grace to describe Darren Dods handball as a stonewall penalty.

The commentator:-

Samaras goal...

"Oh it's tight - two players arguably playing Samaras on"

The handball non-penalty...

"Strong appeals - that looks like a handball - Utd off the hook big time"

In the studio:

Samaras goal...

"Half his body is offside" ???!!!!! (I guess that means half his body is onside, which means he is level and the benefit should always go to the striker - Murdo really is a tosser. Maybe if he was paid a wee bit more he could give a wee bit more effort in the job (circa 1998))

The handball non-penalty...

"Stonewall penalty kick"

And there ye have it. Robbed. But no outcry. Just a smile.

'uk' became 'lump' very, very quickly

If anything good comes out of the McGeady suspension at the weekend I guess he should be raring to go on Thursday.

One of the excuses for News shows earlier showed a clip of the away game there in 1999, a 0-1 away win to follow up from our 2-0 home win.

Henrik Larsson with three all goals, changed days now but still expect a win, a draw may be acceptable.

Not got the same excitement for this is you get in CL weeks, Thursday night European football just reminds me of Bolton and the weird teams they played a few years ago.

Really Shocked that Uefa have given divers a licence to dive, discraceful

Regarding our last outing v Hapol we had big players then, now i think and fear we will be a push over in Europe, please proove me wrong Celtic

Hmmm, our home leg starting line-up last time we played HTA:

Celtic: Gould, McNamara, Mahe, Tebily, Stubbs, Burley, Lambert, Moravcik, Petta (Blinker 85), Larsson, Burchill.
Non Used Subs: Kharine, Petrov, Mjallby, Riseth, Brattbakk, Johnson.

What is going on here???

To say I am perplexed is putting it mildly.

I just cannot reconcile the WDH who went out of his way to assist me and could not have been more helpful had he tried just 2 weeks ago (bearing in mind the guy did not know me and had never met me) with the WDH who is apparently slating the efforts of the fundraising for Kano.

To say its weird is putting it mildly.
