Celtic 3-0 Kilmarnock, SPL, 31 October 2009

| | Comments (761)
Celtic returned to form in emphatic fashion today beating Kilmarnock 3-0 in a game which could easily resulted in a heavier defeat for the visitors.  Celtic were in charge from the opening minutes with Paddy McCourt enjoying a rare start and Georgios Samaras working all over the field.

Aiden McGeady opened the scoring on 13 minutes when he dropped a shoulder to create space inside the box before firing home.  Georgios Samaras met an excellent first time cross from Andreas Hinkel just after the half hour mark to head high into the net and give Celtic a commanding lead.  Niall McGinn completed the scoring with his first goal for Celtic on 78 minutes after collecting another excellent pass from Hinkel to smash a shot into the corner of the net.

Landry N'Guemo and Mac Crosas looked an excellent central midfield partnership.  They retained their shape and possession throughout, allowing the creative wide players scope to push forward.  The addition of Hinkel, or to be more precise, his delivery from the right, contributed greatly to Celtic's play throughout.  Paddy McCourt gave his expected fluent performance in the first half before tiring in the second, but by then the damage was done to Kilmarnock.  Marc Fortune made a welcome return late in the game after two months on the sidelines through injury.

The only troubled spot for Celtic was Kevin Kyle, who repeatedly won high balls in dangerous areas.

Despite coming through a difficult period Celtic went three points clear at the top of the league this afternoon.  If Dundee United turn up tomorrow they could give Rangers something to take their minds off financial problems.

All that and Kano on the big screens at half time!

hit the bar!!

Come on Levein's team. A result for them would be the perfect end to a good week in Celticland, where rangers are on the point of going out of existence.

Anything less than a win for Dundee Utd tomorrow will be a disappointment.

Very subtle hint that Rangers are third.

Given the new article I repeat, anyone think we missed Skoosh?

Whither now, ye prophets of doom ... ?

Tomorrow is a huge game for Craig Levein. Despite the clear progress he has made with Dundee Utd in recent seasons, he has yet to win a game that matters. Tomorrow's game matters.

A win puts his team into third place in the league, and sets down a marker to his competitors that Dundee are for real this season.

I wish him well :¬)

Ah MacCrossas ...och aye the noo.

Think Burley will pick him?

A wee bit of advertising from the previous article.

Hail Hail fellow Celts.

Tonights victory was cause for another celebration. Tonight saw the inauguaration and the rebirth of the Singapore Celtic Supporters club.

9 good Tims gathered at Bojangles Pub Arcadia and saw a fantastic performance by the men in the hoops. We shouted with passion as we stood 7000 miles away from Celtic Park and witnessed Tony's Celtic team play football the Glasgow Celtic way.

Harry or Timoot as he is well known here on CQN has shown us younger Celts what it really means to be a Celtic supporter by his efforts and endeavours to get the Singapore Celts up and running again.

We will post our details in Celtic Bars for all the travelling Celts who are passing through Singapore, we are the official Celtic Supporters club.

Looking forward to welcoming you in Singapore.

From the last thread, asking if anyone is missing wee Skoosh, without question the answer is yes. There are lots of regular CQNers who have so little to complain about tonight that they can't bring themselves to post.

WestWalesCelt

No.

Gordon_J - Kano's video brought a tear to the eye. Well done to you & the rest of the guys & good luck to the Fife contingent tonight.

Malceye - I thought about you at the game today. Yes, we need to take the standard of opposition into account but I'm pretty sure you would have enjoyed it all the same.

BB

My arithmetic might be off but I think Utd will need to win by three clear goals to go third above the beasties, otherwise theyre fourth.

TLWIO

Just back in from the game, have to admit i enjoyed it today, so did the mates.
Playing like that a with a top class finisher and a no nonsense centre half, we just might be heading in the right direction.
I felt the atmosphere was better today even although the rows of empty seats are growing on a weekly basis.
Well done BTM and the players, good performance.

The Battered Bunnet from last article

Why people walked out today

Not long before half time, a heavy police/steward police presence appeared at the entrances/exits of 111 and 112.

After observing the Green Brigade supporting the team, the stewards with the help of the police decided to remove a few of our members. Obviously they were not too keen to go down to the concourse for a 'quiet word' for fear of arrest. Eventually they managed to get 1 lad out of the section, and as a result the rest of the group followed him. Alot of non members also walked out , and the group received great support from the rest of the fans as they did so.

Very very strange that we had any problems today, as things have been going ok for the past wee while. The last 2 home games (Hamburg and Hearts) have seen great support for the team from the 111 area. We recognise that there has been overcrowding issues in the past , and this is something we have attempted to deal with (by asking those on our forum, not to be taking seats that don't belong to them, and indeed asking people in the stadium to move to empty seats etc - this is something that the club have recognised incidentally).

Perhaps today is something to do with the new female supervisor in the section, who we have been made aware is a Hun, and is a known loyalist sympathiser (Loyalist flute bands images/UVF images on her bebo etc). Not entirely the best person to be in charge of that section, or indeed any section inside Celtic Park.

TBB,

a UEFA cup place Europa league place .. whatever it is called matters. Thats the difference between the Arabs being in financial trouble and not being. 2 years ago they were diddled out of it by Mc Curry last year they just lay down to them. Make no mistake the Dundee players notice that Craig is much more motivated in beating Celtic than Rangers. Once a Jambo always a bimbo.

Hail Hail

I enjoyed today's match. It was great to see Celtic come out attacking from the first whistle and not concede within the first 10 min. The hoops turned up for it today. About time. It was great to see Fortune back too, he looked sharp, never really wasted a ball. I have to admit, I don't think we missed brown in the middle of the park, would of liked to have seen Robson rather then Crosas. Anyways, a 3-0 win, exciting football, long may it continue.
Hail Hail.

Excellent result for the Bhoys today, clean sheet and three different goalscorers. By the sounds of things we might have had a couple more. Great news that Fortune played a part, gives us options that we otherwise do not have. Gives us a bit of confidence that we might be able to do something over in Hamburg, we have got to approach that game the way we did against Moscow Dynamo, not just win but to try and better Hamburg's result against us. Does anyone know, what time the game kicks off, and what channel if any is showing the game?

Thanks for the info can someone from the supporters assoc. not take up your issues with the club we have to get this resolved.

I had the chance to see you guys at closer quarters midweek as not in my seat at 405, my son and his pal were thinking about coming over to join the chanting. The atmosphere reminded me of the good old days in the old Jungle at the middle of No.8 (ahh the good old days).

keep up the good work it cheered me up on a lousey night but the issue of people we employ to alienate our support is not on I am only suggesting getting someone from the Assoc. to raise it so they might take more seriously.

Osasuna-Barcelona just kicked off in Pamplona.

The police haven't felt the need to wade into anyone yet. Perhaps because nobody is intimidating any douce Navarrese old ladies in the stadium. Just a hunch.

.

Celtic manager Tony Mowbray:

"I though the level of performance was very similar to Wednesday night. I think we controlled the game again - but today a few goals went in.

"Goals cloud people's judgement of matches, and I can understand that.

"I'm delighted for Aiden and that he got his goal. He's a class act and can do things other players can't.

"There have not been many days when I've been disappointed with Aiden - and Shaun - and then we've got Pat and Niall who can come in as well."

001

I thought we were really good today. I have said for ages that we cannot play Aiden and Shaun in the same team, and with Shaun out, it was great to see Paddy play. We started sharply and quickly, and this helped us win. A central-midfield partnership who were born to their roles helped - both were excellent, and while Hinkel was impressive throughout, my MOTM was Sami. Entertaining and enjoyable, the only downer was the yellow for Aiden - it looked a clear pen.

Quiet on here tonight, we must've won.

Maybe they are all out trick or treating, or gathering evidence of Dermot Desmonds fiendish plot to take over the world.

If the team gets a bit of momentum going and a bit of form together, people will come back.

One thing I think a forum like CQN does, unfortunately, is to make people too entrenched in their views, hence all the garbage about people being either mineshafters or happy clappers.

We’re a family. People will stop taking part for a while, or even drift away for longer periods, but the family, if it is a family, must welcome them back with open arms, as though nothing had ever happened, the instant they choose to come back.

Thanks for that! I am looking forward to Thursday, I happen to believe, having now seen them, that all the teams in our group are of a par, Celtic are the team without the good result. A win over Hamburg would put us right back in it, but having said that it really is now or never.

Patrick27
Haven't heard any other scores today but hope your correct, would be nice to see the hun slipping down the league table this week.

Good to hear the two central midfielders worked well together, if we are going to play with two holding midfielders then its best that we play players who are used to the position.

The other week we have Brown and Robson in there, hope we dont see that again.

St.JohnDoyle 7.06pm

Thanks for your support.

We'll be sitting down, and working out what is the best way forward if the club/police continue with these tactics, as obviously we can't walk out every game etc etc.

It seems as if there is 'elements' within the club who would love it if we were not there - but incidents like today will only make us stronger.

Supportingyourteamisnotacrimecsc

Enjoyed the game today. Big improvement from Wednesday. Crosas played very well and kept the ball moving. He was supported by Caldwell behind him and N'Guemo to his side. Reminded me of his great display at Fir Park last September when he was flanked by Brown and Robson. Definitely needs combatants around him.

Big Sammi ? What can you say ? Full of histrionics but at the same time I felt he terrorised the Kilmarnock back line more than any one else. Hinkel was outstanding throughout. Good to see young McGinn get on the score sheet. He is the old fashioned type of winger I like.

Now, a wee victory against the Hamburg Huns on Thursday would be very nice.

On a less pleasing note. I was told weeks ago that a woman Hun was to be put in charge of the Green Brigade section. Whoever made this decision is totally out of order. It is sheer provocation against our fans. This person will delight in causing trouble. Very worrying development.

Sorry I had to take a break for a few hours to let my grandson watch his Toy Story dvd. Thanks for your reply.

I have to disagree, I think the key words I used were, 'Failure to spend decent money - I'm not saying that we need to spend £13million - will ensure a further drop in the sales of season tickets which will prove catastrophic.'

Has Tony Mowbray spent £8m?

Fortune - £3.8m
Danny Fox - £2m
Landry N'Guemo £0.5m
Zheng Zhi - Free Agent

I make that £6.3m with Donati's transfer reducing the amount by either £1m or £1.5m depending on which paper you read.

I will say this, if we disappear out of sight by the end of December, then I don't think the Board will invest in the team. However, if they don't buy players and show some ambition, I think our fans will not renew their season tickets in their thousands. This is being demonstrated to the Board at the moment. Celtic are in the entertainment business. When you go to see Michael McIntyre, Billy Connolly, U2, Take That, The Eagles etc, you expect to be entertained and come away from the event with a feel good factor. For too many people that has been missing.

When I was young the older generation of my family used to say 'when we were young nobody had any money and we had to make our own entertainment.' It's maybe not so bad nowadays but there's not a lot of money about for many people and when they do pay out money they need to feel that they have had value for money or they won't go back.

Gordon_J, stunning work for Kano at half time.

Blogger 'GG, third might be a target for them to aim for soon.

West Wales Celt, the Celtic midfield would not have played as well with Brown.

At the Hamburg game the other week the stewards in front of the police control room at the wall between the away support and main stand stood side to side with Glasgow huns in the away section as they hung over and screamed their vile abuse at people in the main stand. The usual racist bigoted hun abuse thats meant to be outlawed.

They did nothing about them and there was even a snigger from one of them while the hun beside him was ranting.

I know everyone has a right to criticise but sometimes it seems as if they actually enjoy when we drop points, as it gives them an excuse to moan.

Perhaps then we'll have the readies to tie up the Landry / Crosas partnership.

Q.2:

If you can only have one out of a striker who can score or a CB who can defend what would you choose?

You may use an ethical framework to expand the rationale underlying your choice...

End of the Hamburg game in particular there was pretty vociferous republican stuff from the GB.

I'm not always in a position to hear the GB songs, so not sure if that is a regular feature.

It's not going to make your relationship with the club any easier though. Could todays incident be related?

Incidentally, thought the GB were outstanding against Hamburg, the chants at the end aside.

Great performance today from the Hoops. Fluid passing football and great movement, despite the odd moment of Kevin Kyle-induced worry at the back.
Balance of the team looked far better today and the Crosas-N'Guemo partnership that looked tidy but ineffective today bossed the game..quick passing and interchange and most importantly VISION and the ability to execute the more difficult pass..
Why are some people even debating if we missed Brown, he cudnae get a game for a pub team on his current form and is one of the most limited midfielders I have ever seen..??any comments
Paddy finally gets his merited start, always looks dangerous despite his defensive defficiencies and his guile and threat take some pressure off of Aiden who in turn can explot this, which as mentioned helped the structure of the side.
Samaras s still far too naive and profligate in front of gaol but fair play to the big guy today, he worked hard and was always willing to move and receive the ball, continually committing Killie players. Also Fortune looked sharp and hungry which bodes well for future as we now have real competition again up front..
Just really glads to have enbjoyed a game at Parkhead for first time in along while and all the best to BTM and the Bhoys..long may it continue

Of course it gets to me. I'm only human. But I am for Celtic, in season and out of season, and always try to show face and say something positive, no matter what the result or the performance.

Paul67 said a long time ago that there are people in the online Celtic community who would rather be right (about the coach, the captain, the team, the chairman …) than first.

My blog name must tell you how I feel about that.

However, I know that the very best times on here have been when everyone was united, such as when Jinky and Tommy Burns died, or at the times of winning titles and achieving the amazing results we have achieved in Europe in recent years.

It's best when there is no conflict, no division. Division is the work of the devil.

Sky Sports report on the game is very good. They show the McGeady incident and suggest it was a penalty, and also that Jamie Hammill should have been carded for his challenge on Fox. Finally, they show the 'Reaper-banner' (Hamburg coming up, eh?) - 'a Hallowe'en giggle at Rangers' financial woes'.

UTLR

What is the root of the problem? Is it seat planning or songs or behaviour or what? I do not understand why: a) Celtic would want to alienate supporters (more than they do already): or b) Why supporters would want to walk out of a game, a highly entertaining one at that, which they have paid right good money to atend in the first place.

Awe Naw
I disagree with you. Levein loves beating any team, and the bigger the opposition the more motivated his is. If he is more highly motivated to beat Celtic than Rangers, the reason is plain.

Patrick27
Yip, 2-0 or better puts them into 3rd place. It's a big fixture for the league aswell. Neither Aberdeen not Hearts are up to snuff this season, and I cannot imagine Motherwell will maintain their recent run of results. The league needs Utd to win tomorrow. If they do, there will be an unholy scrap between Hibs, Utd and Rangers.

I enjoyed today's performance.
We put in the effort & reaped the rewards.

I also enjoyed our midweek performance against Hearts.
Sadly, we got nothing there for our efforts.

It is a shame that very few of us seem to have learned to 'treat these two impostors just the same'.

'We don't care if we............' Aw, forget it.

WWC

If we continue to create chances as we're now doing then I'd happily take a striker who'll convert the chances currently being missed if we can only bring in one player.

The South Korean guy coming in January concerns me in that who is going to be benchwarming to let him play?

We can't afford well paid benchwarmers so two or three need to be moved on which won't be easy to do.

CELTIC arrested their poor run of home form in some style with a convincing 3-0 win over Kilmarnock at Parkhead.
With just two wins in nine before the visit of Killie, Tony Mowbray's side were under pressure and they duly performed to stay three points ahead of second-placed Hibernian at the top of the table and four ahead of Rangers.

In a one-sided first half, goals from Aiden McGeady and Georgios Samaras gave the home side a deserved lead which could have been more convincing save for some slack play from Mowbray's men in the final third.

Although Killie skipper Kevin Kyle missed three good chances with his head, Hoops substitute Niall McGinn, on for Paddy McCourt in the second half, put a proper perspective on the game when he grabbed the third in 78 minutes.

Even if Rangers do claw three points back at Dundee United tomorrow, Celtic will be in better fettle for Thursday's Europa League clash with Hamburg in Germany.

Another boost was the second-half return of striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, back for the first time since recovering from a knee injury sustained against Arsenal in the Champions League in August.

The Ayrshire side's quest for Parkhead success, though, continues.
Kilmarnock had not won in the east end of Glasgow for 55 years and the early moments did little to encourage the small band of visiting fans inside a half-empty Celtic Park.

In a whirlwind start by the home side, stand-in keeper Cameron Bell saved from Hoops' striker Scott McDonald at his near post, just moments after Killie had survived a penalty scare when the ball appeared to glance off Frazer Wright's hand.

Keeper Cameron Bell (grounded) lies dejected after failing to stop Celtic's Georgios Samaras scoring his side's second

Kilmarnock goalkeeper Cameron Bell fails to stop Georgios Samaras scoring Celtic's second

However, in the 13th minute the Killie defender had less luck when McGeady took him on inside the box, beat him with a trick, then fired his angled shot from 14 yards past Bell and into the net off the far post.

Moments later, Bell was called upon to save down at his right-hand post from Paddy McCourt's drilled shot, seconds before Samaras failed to find McDonald with his pass across the six-yard box with the Killie defence wide open.

It was one-way traffic and in the 22nd minute McCourt went on one of his trademark runs before driving inches wide of the post from the edge of the box.

McGeady then found no takers when he slid the ball across the six-yard box.
It was almost embarrassingly one-sided.

In the 26th minute McCourt's raking pass found Samaras racing down the right and when his cross was met by McDonald six yards out only Bell's reflexes prevented the home side doubling their lead.

The visitors did go two ahead in the 32nd minute following yet another fine move which cut open the Kilmarnock.

McGeady released the unmarked Andreas Hinkel down the right and his cross was bulleted past Bell by the head of Samaras, the Greece international showing the direction which was so badly missing in the Co-operative
Insurance Cup defeat by Hearts in midweek.

Two minutes from the break, in their first real foray, Kyle missed a sitter when he headed Gavin Skelton's cross past the post from five yards.
There looked no way back for Kilmarnock even though manager Jim Jefferies reshuffled his side by replacing Danny Invincibile and Conor Sammon with Garry Hay and former Celt David Fernandez at the interval.

But the visitors showed a willingness at the start of the second half and in the 50th minute Kyle came closer with his header from Craig Bryson's cross, this time the ball just clearing the bar.

The Killie striker then had to come off for treatment after clashing with Glenn Loovens but returned with a bandage round his head, moments before he headed over again, this time from a Jamie Hamill cross.

Celtic were less dominant than in the first half but still in control.
In the 66th minute McGinn and Fortune came on for McDonald and McCourt while Iain Flannigan replaced Skelton for Killie.

Seconds later McGeady was booked by referee Willie Collum for diving inside the Killie box after a clash with Jamie Fowler.

As Celtic stepped up the pace again, Samaras slid his angled shot from 16 yards past the far post before McGeady drove straight at Bell from the edge of the box.

But in the 78th minute McGinn sealed the points when he ran on to a Hinkel pass and rifled the ball past Bell from 16 yards.

As Kilmarnock wilted, Bell made a fine save from McGeady, who was then replaced by Zheng Zhi.

In an 86th-minute melee inside the Rugby Park box, the China captain had a goalbound shot blocked just seconds after McGinn had an effort saved by Bell, who, despite the result, deserved a medal for his efforts.

CB is a must. It's the key to everything this season. Kevin Kyle won almost everything in the air today, which is not good enough for a Celtic defence.
Sort out the defence, everything will click into place after that.

Great result today. Really enjoyed the game, but not the defending, though very please with a clean sheet. Two results today! :))))))

In tribute to Noel 90, I'll just take post 67 while I'm here.

Outback,

I think Fortune and Samaras might click.

I don't know if it is just me, i seen McDonald rip into Paddy in the first half for not passing. I seen him do the same to Fortune, Hinkel and obviously Samaras gets the worst me. For me playing woth someone like that constantly moaning would destroy any confidence you had.

That's McManus suspended for two games and now Fortune is back. Slowly but surley the guys that need to be removed from the team are going. Brown being out as well has showed that N'Guemo has improved playind with someone that can keep the ball and play passes (just like Donati).

It's time for Crosas to get a run of games now to try and establish himself.

Or maybe not.

The numbers quoted - £8 Million - include the dough paid to West Brom for our new management team. This has been clearly stated by the club in recent days.

Although there remains an 'if' outstanding on the transfer of our Korean wonderkid, it is likely, unless falling attendances and European performances improve, that the budget is now spent, and we will need player sales to finance new buys in January.

Even on this blog it's the first time I've seen the payment for a manager and his backroom team counted as transfer budget. It is hardly going to contribute to the entertainment factor in the way that a skillful midfielder or a good striker would. It's hardly going to put the ball in the net on the park or help keep it out at the other end.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear this type of spin from Board members.

Big fat DJ said on Clyde that a buyer would only need to find £30m .........what a laugh....they're now getting pathetic in their efforts to play down the Hun mess........

TBB,

of course the reason is plain .. he´s a hun nowt to do with it maybe being an indirect compliment as you allude to but he doesn´t send the Arabs out to kick the bejeezus out of the huns. He does it cos he knows he can get away with it. Personally I think he proved at Leicester how good a coach he is. Which is rank. Mmhhhhhhh I wonder why ??????

Can anyone put up stats comparing Leveins Arabs to when they play us compared to the huns ?

'Celtic in the entertainment business'

I think that is a really interesting observation.

It could well be at the root of the current malaise around the club. For many it is more about entertainment than about 'support' and being part of a united cause.

You are right that for many it does compete with Eagles, michael McIntyre and other stuff......

I think fortunately, many also see it as much more than that. I hope that it continues to mean much more than that to a large chunk of our crowd. On the basis of guaranteed 'entertainment' then football fails to deliver.

For me it is living through the turgid 1-0 wins v Hearts in 79 (just before the 4-2 game), the 5-1 loss at Dundee in 80, Falkirk Cup semi defeats, the Raith pens shoot out, Xmamx, Burnley 78 and many many more make the 100 or so really really special ocassions worth much more than the ticket money x 10 !

I think the contract or bond with Celtic for many is more than just about entertainment, but I do toally respect that others may well have a different relationship.

I also completely respect the point you make in today's consumer society where kids have choices. My kids have been to just 1 pro game this season, despite being offered on more than 10 ocassions.

Goodness, I'm disagreeing with you again. Gold Coast Tom will be thrawn if you reply :¬)

Craig Levein is a single minded sunuvabetch. I suspect he will prove to be a cracking manager in due course, and I do hope it's with any team except Rangers. More particularly, I hope he delivers a Dundee United side that matches McLean's for flair and roots-up talent. His impact on youth development at Utd is already significant, and he has an eye for a player like few of his peers.

We'll see. He's a young bloke in the game - still just 45 - but he's got the cahones to stand at Ibrox and call officially sanctioned cheating for what it is. I wish him well.

The proviso is that his record in the games that matter is suspect. He needs to discover the secret to winning the biggies. Tomorrow is one of them.

Burnley'78, we grew at a spectacular rate as a community and some fall-away was inevitable. I reckon our core support base has grown from around 16,000, when I was in my peak attendance years in the early 80s, to around 40,000. We might have to find a healthy way to survive at this level – which I am sure will be possible.

what is the stars

I've had a wee flutter on most of your tips, but missed that one this morning, I'm kicking myself. I thought I was in the money last night when I got 8/1 on way west only to be pipped at the post. Keep them coming.

My exile was a short one. We won today. great stuff. much better atmosphere on here.

UTLR - this Hun supervisor, can she be named and shamed? links to bebo, facebook pages, info sent to Celtic FC? Is this a Cop or a steward? It is well worth remembering that security/ stewarding companies are generally run by people with les than honourable histories behind them. As far as I know Celtic 'out source this job' nes pas? Perhaps it is time it was in house again. seem to recall you saying that Liverpool fans steward liverpool matches.

makes sense to me. I imagine a rather long queue of applicants to get supervising the games of their own team.

Off in to the sunset again. If we win on Thursday I'll be unstoppable.

Thoroughly enjoyed todays game. Only difference from Wednesday is that we hit the onion bag 3 times. Superb goal from young Niall. Great strike son, showing the way for our more experienced strikers. Really like the look of Fortune when he came on today. He has something we have missed all season so far. The ability to turn a defender on a 5p piece. May be a bit early but after seeing the chances we created on Wednesday and again today I am beggining to feel a little confidence creep back in.

Kilbowie Kelt

Glad as I am about today's win, I have to say I am puzzled by comparisons between the way we played today and the way we played on Wednesday night.

I'm a great believer in evaluating the overall performance as well as the result, which is why I don't understand how Tony and you can say what a great performance it was by us against Hearts.

In my opinion it was the worst we've played all season - it even beats the Happoel game for me, it's that bad.

Dinamo Moscow 0-1, Arsenal 0-2, Hamburg 0-1 - three games off the top of my head where we lost but played better than in the Hearts game (considering the calibre of opposition).

So unless we played terribly today but won 3-0, I won't be any less confused!

Have to say I was really impressed by the performance today. The team came out and attacked straight from kick off and were relentless with their positive football. Glad to see McCourt start - although he might have to learn to make the pass from time to time instead of trying to beat one more - and really glad to see Samaras score too. He's had a tough week and looked a wee bit short of confidence before he scored but we need him confident and scoring. He might be an occassional donkey but he's our occasional donkey. Fortune didnt look like he'd been out for 2 months either which is hugely encouraging.

Thought their big striker Kyle put our defence under far too much pressure though. Not exactly a great striker but he seemed to win everything in the air and battled for everything on the deck too. Hamburg's strikeforce will be a significant step up from Kyle and company...I hope our centre backs can cope with this.

The Green Brigade walk out? I sit in 113 and I think they're great at contributing to the atmosphere. A few of my pals from work sit in 113 with them and I thought they were in great voice from the start today. But a few of their chants started to head towards being confrontational towards the stewards and this seemed to bring the police attention there. I dont sit in 111 so I couldnt hear what was being said but once the two policemen appeared and one of the polis was skelped in the back of the head by a full cup of juice that seemed to be it. If you throw missiles at the police then I can only see one outcome from there. I dont doubt for one second that certain sections of the club would like to see the GB removed but there were a fair few older guys sitting around me who werent overly impressed by what they saw as the GB bringing it on themselves.

The GB are a massive improvement to the atmosphere in the ground but I'd like to see them stay in the ground and get behind the team instead of getting involved in needless aggression. Maybe it wasnt needless - perhaps UTLR can say what caused it - but there were a few lads who looked like they were there looking for bother instead of trying to calm the situation.

BT

it was a goal worth missing. Just beacause it was a GOAL.

In ordinary circumstances I'd bite your hand off for a draw tomorrow, and indeed, such a result wouldn't upset me greatly, but this is a must win for the league and for Levein's United.

BTW Leicester City fans I know (3 of them to be fair) don't hold Levein to blame for the circumstances of his tenure there. I think the experience actually made him focus on what he needs to become if he wants the career he believes he is capable of.

I wish him well tomorrow.

Moreover, I wish you well always.

Estadio,/Battered Bunnet,

I normally sit in the Jock Stein Stand but for one game this season I had an opportunity to sit in 111. The GB were absolutely magnificent. They sang and chanted for every player in the team, from the very popular Artur Boruc to the less popular Scott McDonald. It was just like being in the old Jungle.

It is well known that the GB opposed the appointment of John Reid as chairman. From what I gather they believe this will ultimately bring discredit on Celtic as there will come a time when the all the facts and details eventually emerge of Mr Reid's involvement in pressing for an illegal war. (Irag). It is for this reason that their banner is hung upside down.

People have a right to disagree with this standpoint of course. Equally, I believe, the GB or any group of Celtic fans have the right to hold it without being singled out for negative treatment. Surely Celtic is a broad enough church to accomodate various views and opinions without a hun steward being set on them.
We all support the same team after all.

Interesting point on the entertainment debate and indeed I was entertained today.

On the way into the ground I said to the great guy I travel with that I was determined to throw away the negativity that I've allowed to depress me of late and get back to supporting the club in the way I used to do. He totally agreed with my stance.

We then went on to remind each other that things have been far poorer in years gone by but that's all too easily forgotten or indeed doesn't sit well with individual's agendas.

I intend remaining upbeat for the journey ahead with BTM despite the best efforts of the doom merchants.

Hope things went well the other night.

much better today much better.

It was a pleasure to witness that now let that be a platform to build from.

I thought Hinkle was brilliant, Sammi ran his socks off, Crosas strolled through the game. In McCourt and McGeady we have two magicians and young Niall Mcginn always looked lively - took his goal very well. If Tommy N'Guemo can stop the dawdling and the slack passes he will be a great addition to the squad - his workrate is very good but please please learn to shoot.

McDonald had a bad day at the office and Mowbray subs were correct and at the right time, that's the one main grievance I have had with Mowbray is the choice of subs - today he delivered.

And Fortune - what a difference he made when he came on. I can't believe we never scored again. still better to do that when we are 3 up.

MON THE HOOPS

And that kyle did anyone notice his frustration 1st half when he put a header wide? He punched the post in frustration and then let out a big load roar of the F word that I could clearly hear in the jock stein lower - HA HA ya big hun

Oh and one other thing - I couldn't care less about our poor neighbours across the river. I dont care what they do. I only care about the team I love and we done well today.

Well done CELTIC

HAIL HAIL

Btw..just want to say how proud I was of the Kano message on the big screens today. Testament to the big hearted ethos of the Celtic family and and the efforts of those involved. Fantastic to see in a sport which has become so materialistic that there are some people who still do truly sefless deeds.

UTLR and Monsieur Tressell,

Irrespective of folks' background, there is always, ALWAYS, a place at Celtic for those who are good enough. If the girl in question is a competent steward she's good enough for me. If she's not competent she has no place at the club. Her politics have no place in the discussion. As soon as they do, Celtic is dead.

TBB

Blog Police,

Great point about how we begin matches. It makes such a difference to our performance when we come out flying right from the kick off. But we need to do it at the beginning of the second half as well. We were a bit flat for the first 15mins of the second half.

But apart from that we were outstanding. And sorry Kojo, but for me, there's no way Paul Caddis can come in for Andy Hinkel. I said that after the Hamilton match as well. He's the best crosser of a ball at the club and could have had a hat trick of assists today.

Close to man of the match for me but I thought Aiden shaded it. Although Landry had a great game in the middle of the park as well. They were my top three performers.

And how much of a difference did Fortune make when he arrived? The ball sticks to him like none of our other forwards and we look a lot more purposeful in the opponents half with him on the pitch.

Don't get me wrong. I don't expect to be entertained in every game but I would like to see entertaining football more often than I do. Under Gordon Strachan's very successful reign I saw precious little of it and I eventuall became disenchanted after 3 and a half seasons of watching it. I'm grateful - very grateful - for the trophies that Gordon brought us but I wish he would have sent out his Celtic teams to play a bit more expansively especially when they had matches won.

Jock Stein understood what I'm talking about. He was often quoted as saying that in the last 15 minutes of a game that was won he would instruct the players to give the ball to Jinky who would then go through his repertoire of tricks.

The fans love being entertained. Di Canio got them out of their seats. Lubo - what about his trapping the ball with his backside against Hearts? Lubo also used to do a series of ball juggling tricks when he went out to take corner kicks. The fans in the nearby sections gave hime the 'We're not worthy treatment'. What about Aiden's piece of skill against Nesta?

This is what I'm talking about. The occasional piece of skill, passing football. I went to the Hamburg game and was astonished at the lack of ability of many of our players to pass the ball accurately and to control it when it came to them. For many of them, their second touch was a tackle.

I'm trying to state my case in a reasonable manner and I don't want it to descend into a rant especially on a day when the team entertained and I wasn't there! Maybe I should stay away more often and they'll play the type of football I yearn for - the Glasgow Celtic way.

Got a picture of the grim reaper on my mobile..

the green brigade bring colour and atmosphere to celtic park and to the away games, some of their banners have been brilliant and the effort they put in cant be questioned

but theres a militancy there that they hide, they are hell bent on undermining the hierarchy at celtic and replacing the people in charge with god knows what. they see themsleves as being rebels and in a fight with the plc and will use whatever means necessary to achieve their ends.

Not having any kind of analysis of our AGM and it´s possible connotations are for most CQN contributors that I know personally no longer a surprise.

However your last post sneaked ín under the radar when it truly should be a series of headlining CQN articles entitled how to arrest the decline in Celtic. If your serious about keeping the Celtic news not lazy journalism tag and not been seen as a board apparatus.

Two questions.

Didn´t Peter Lawwell tell us only yesterday that downsizing was not on the agenda ?

Do you believe that the credit crunch and only the credit crunch is the reason for the dropped attendances and has nothing to do with the support assertion that we are downsizing ?

There are far too many players picking up a few grand a week whilst having little or no impact on the first team.Smaller squad better quality is what the manager appears to be after.

SMcD - 15 good goals per season, we need more.
He needs an EPL struggler who will appreciate his few moments of world class finishing and put up with his world class moaning.

Apart from the result of course, things went well on Wednesday thanks.

Yes hopefully the return of his star signing, a few more good bounces of the ball and a successful 'January window' both 'in and out', will see Tony get things motoring now that Celtic is leading the way again at the top !

A key part of playing good football is players playing with confidence. A few wins will lessen the pressure on them and allow this to flow I believe.

Sadiesbhoy

I understand the magic of the initially maligned (by the ignorant Scottish media) Lubo or Jinky. I am always intrigued by the 'Celtic way' thing as perversely I enjoyed the league win in 79 (winning ugly if ever we did in 80% of our wins !) much more than the league losses under Tommy's reign when we played so well but came up short.

The value for money point back in the old days was less of an issue as the % of disposable income which we spent on the club was so much smaller, and the competition was so much less.

My point is that the enduring appeal of the Celtic 'Brand', 'cause' or whatever will hopefully always be about much more than just the players on the park. The challenge of our custodians (board and management) is to keep that true 'authentic' connection going......and keep winning leagues and making profit...

great post except one thing you wrote

I couldn't care less about our poor neighbours across the river. I dont care what they do. I only care about the team I love and we done well today.

Can I suggest that you start to take an interest as that is benchmark for our PLC. Our Old Firm partners are about to go bust and our PLC is giving them every shaft of daylight to recover.

John Reid never said ONE word of any significance, apart from admitting that it is indeed the Directors who decide who comes and who goes at Celtic Park, at our AGM on Friday that did not reference them across the river.

Anybody who does´t want to even countenance it is playing the ostrich or is indeed an Old Firm fan.

Sami ? there is a player in there somewhere...

Guy behind me doesn't like Sammi. You could tell he wasn't happy he was having a good game. With that kind of mentality what hope do the players have?

If there is any sniff of a public bailout of Scottish football, first thing Celtic should do is go blow £30M on a couple of high profile players and then say us too. :)

We have never hidden our politics and songbook from day 1, i don't think our songbook is the problem.

Battered Bunnet 7.39pm

Root of the problem? Who knows? We started off 3 years ago, a few guys at the back of 111, now we have a membership of 60 (not all sit in 111), but at the recent Hamburg/Hearts games there was easily 500 people singing and standing in 111. People are onbiously attracted to our style of supporting the team. Are the club afraid of this? I don't know. Maybe it is our politics (remember all politics are to be left at the door, but they won't be next weekend when the team wear poppies at Falkirk) .

Why would we want to walk out? Of course we didn't want to walk out. Some of us travelled great distances to attend the game. We looked as if we were playing well. We don't spend all our spare time organising tifos/painting banners, just to walk out for the sake of things.

Roberttressell

She is a steward and is a member of the Greenock Young Defenders flute band. Her bebo has since been made private but before this it was put on the huddleboard, along with her UVF images etc.

josef k 8.12pm

'a few chants started to head towards confrontation' . If you hate the stewards, clap your hands was sung, when they were in the process of trying to eject fans/customers.

As for the cup of juice - this struck the police from behind when they were standing facing the group, so it came from behind the police and as a result from someone towards the left of the group.

If the cup was thrown from the group, it would have hit them face on.

To be throwing missiles accross a crowded section of fans is bang out of order - end of.

mom paddy mccourt he's getting that just for getting a game and from now on evertime he plays I will start with, "given paddy mccourt was man of the match", I thought both crosas and n'guemo were outstanding and I hope this partnership is given a chance if that is going to be typical, crosas I'm glad to say made a much bigger impression today and if he keeps up that standard I'm very close to eating my words, but he's got a wee bit to do yet.
The whole team played well and sammi had another stormer but never missed as many sitters, which was a bit disappointing :o)

i expect us to lose artur to arsenal in January - we could do with losing mick, heid and skippy but only if we can bring in anyone better

Paul67

Any thoughts on the crowd figure given out on the BBC web-site?

They are showing 46K
Does this mean that the club have changed the attendance figure criteria?

People who actually turned up vs people who paid?

If yes why?
If no, is this the lowest figure in 10 years?

SadiesBhoy on October 31, 2009 7:24 PM

We will have to agree to disagree.

Borrowing money to invest in the transfer market is, in my opinion, a recipe for disaster.

There are no guarantees when purchasing players and that’s without discussing what happens if they leave for free when their contracts are up ! We will still have the debt. What do we do then ?

I'm off now.
Have a good night.

ps I thought we had paid £2m for the Korean bhoy who comes in Jan ? Might be wrong, as for the Mowbray money paid to WBA, ok its not for a player but its still real money.

UTLR

Fair play to you and your members! I have had the great pleasure to be seated in amongst the GB at all the away games and I applaud you for the way you create an atmosphere.

I'll be at the Falkirk Stadium on sunday and travel with Celtic fans from Edinburgh, as you mention in your post we've often heard the 'all politics should be left at the door' but as you say that will not be the case on Sunday.

The legendary Wolfetones will be playing live in Edinburgh next sunday night so the lads we travel with will be out for the day starting with the game. It could well be interesting.

Let the people sing!

DD

UTLR,

You might want to go onto KDS post match thread. You guys are getting a pounding.

making a point by not wearing poppies is a far more politcal act than wearing them. despite what i read from one of your members, that john reid insisted we wore them last year, we were asked by the sfa/spl to do like every other team in scotland

the plc were backed into a corner and took the least political option.

I don't know that much about the Green Brigade but what i do know is that without them at most home games CP's dire atmosphere would be even so.

FLC

canamalar,

Not sure if I'll be down in Newcastle next week. I'll be in Scotland up to Wednesday. Don't know about Thursday or Friday yet.

Another two assists for Hinkel. He's a conveyor belt chance maker. Young Niall almost bagged a 2nd from another excellent Hinkel set-up.

Bit early for the poppy debate lhads. Let's enjoy today’s splendid performance.

From prev post
Insert "more" between even and so.

I'll never get the hang of this.

FLC

A sparkling performance today, we were up for it from the 1st minute to the 90th, Kilmarnock were never in it at all, the fact they kept the score respectable says a lot of their resiliance, their reserve keeper in particular.

Like Wednesday, we could have scored a barrelload but this time the early settler for Aiden took any tension out the air.

Great performances all round- Hinkel, the mid 4 and Sammi- the big man can be such an enigma, was going past players with ease but his final ball/decision making lets him down- but 1 thing- he does not hide.
Paddy is a sheer joy to watch, ghosts past players (well it is hallow'een) as if they were not there and can pick a pass, honestly if we had paid £5m for him we would be considering this as money well spent.

Crosas looked very composed and wasted nothing, N'Guemo- likewise hardly missed a pass all day- unlike Wednesday- a much, much better performance.
Fortune looked impressive- fast, strong and sharp when he came on, he has great pace over the first 2-3 yards and he showed today he has the potential to be the link man we are looking.

As for Skippy- sorry- he is so far off the pace, as usual- caught offside too often, when we play as fast as we did today he really is looking the weak link. I hope he can lift his game.

Finally- as the players came off today, they were beaming big smiles, as if a weight had been lifted, I really hope we can push on from this, and I am sure we will.

Hail hail all- especially to The Green Brigade- stick in there Bhoys and of course to Kano- well done to MWD and Gordon J for the video-he indeed will never walk alone!

Team

Late last night I predicated a five nil win against the ayrshire huns

In fairness we were not far away from it

In the first half i thought that we could have achieved that by the positive play

After cursing the big man on wed night, thurs morning I was pleased at how positive big sammi looked today, I dont think that he is the finished article, however with with confidence I think that he can do a job.

When Big Marc came on I think Sammi got a massive lift

There body lanaguage was impressive and they look as is they like playing together, at least big Marc does not appear to MOAN at him

It was also good to see very good movement from Big Marc today, with defenders watching him, it allowed the superb all to be played into Nial for a superb goal

Looking forward to seeing more movement from these two guys

On the very simplistic level of providing a bit of noise and energy about an otherwise dreary stadium I really enjoy the Geern Brigade and the buz they generate........

These guys contribute do much more than the pre ordained pre match and HT rituals that the club engage in.

It is so much more noticable on a quiet game when free movement around the stadoium is possible like on Wednesday.

I am sure the vast majority in the stadium view this as adding to the entertainment of the event and the atmosphere and not detracting. I am also sure there are many in the directors box area would as soon be over in the throng of it.....although maybe not wearing the ridiculous collar and tie atire which for some crazy reason is deemed obligatory at Scottish Football in Board Rooms.

not particularly interested in the Green Brigaid's politics, beliefs etc. or those of any other individual group within Celtic Park. I go to support my team. One thing I do know though is this. Without the GB and the Jungle Bhoys CP would be like a morgue.
The GB & JB should be welcome with open arms by the PLC. More so now-a-days with the dwindling number of supporters coming along to support our team.

I also believe Celtic Park should be stewarded by Celtic Supporters like Liverpool are stewarded by Liverpool supporters. Until that day groups like the GB and the JB are always going to be harrassed by non Celtic supporting stewards.

Where are you getting your information from ? If it's from the GB website then forget it. It's an open forum which hunterlopers take delight in trying to undermine.

Please take into consideration too that that there are some Celtic supporters who harbour right wing views. They disagree with the GB's republican politicals and can't wait for an opportunity to put the boot in.

UTLR,

I sit probably as far away in the ground from your group, in the lower south stand, just at the Celtic end.

But in terms of noise, support and intent I think the GB essential and typical of what CFC should be.
So in that respect, I feel very close to you.
More power to you and the rest of the GB.

Irony, how to define irony. Hmmm,

John Reid supporting a charity called War Child.

I mentioned on here last night about the enforced absence of undroppables, creating a chemistry to help Celtic charge on. Crossas and N'Guemo looks like a happy mixture.

Fortune and Sammi up front to me also looks like a potential partnership.

Now to me, that is the couple who at long last could really rip mr Weir a new one in the next Celtic - rangers game.

if Aiden did dive , i don't have a problem with him being booked for it.

the problem i do have is that he seems to be one player who is being singled out for it.

Firstly UTLR Keep up the good work. As a fully paid up veteran of the jungle in the good old days we need you younger bhoys to get some sort of atmosphere inside paradise. More power to you and the rest of the Green Brigade/Jungle Bhoys.

On the game, BTM Play the same defence - if fit- from now till Jan. Hinkle outstanding again, the best crosser of a ball at CP. Heid & Loovens the best we have at CB.
Crosas a passer & N`Guemo a worker, a good partnership. McGeady and McCourt terrorised them and created a hatfull of chances. If we had scored 6 or 7 they would have had no complaints.

BTM stick to a settled team for the next few league games.

Catman

Great game today and the team looked united and up for it from the kick off.

Dundee United will win tomorrow.

Burnley 78

I think that your post hits the nail on the head

For many a year now, we have tended to take things for granted and the atmosphere apart from CL games is not quite the same as when we moved back over from hampden.

The more we win in the MON and WGS years, the more I think that some of the crowd had taken things for granted, added to that the product on the park had changed to a degree

I am not sure why the Police and the Stewards seem to have to pick some of the guys out the crowd, however what I would like to see is someone from the Board actively be in communication with the leaders of the Green Brigade Bhoys, with a view to the giving clear guidelines that avoid the confrontation

Maintain the singing area , keep encouraging support of it

If the people are being removed for safety reasons then perhaps it may be a suggestion for some of the Green Brigade Bhoys and Ghirls to be in a position to steward themselves to a degree

So example, say there are too many people in one area, If Big Fat UVF face steward asks some one to move, then some may take offence and not move, however if there was 5 / 10 of the Green brigade allowed to steward themsleves upto a point with say some arm bands, then perhaps some of the support may listen when theses guys or ghirls ask them to move to side or take seats up elsewhere etc for safety reasons

From safety point of view, same point is achieved, but at least then there would less confrontation with big fat uvf leaning face steward, normal stewards and police

The fact you've never hidden your politics or song book doesn't mean they are not a problem. I get that the comment was made in realtion to todays events, but maybe you need to step back and view the bigger picture?

If you know the clubs attitude to hard core pro replublican singing, and choose to ignore it, then you have no recourse to complain about the consequences.

Also

"Maybe it is our politics (remember all politics are to be left at the door, but they won't be next weekend when the team wear poppies at Falkirk)."

This statement is casting a cloud on my happy day so far (3-0 win, huns on the run, tenner each way on What is the Stares tip, which won at 10-1). Sounds like your planning something - you and your 60 members that is - that will be national news and really embarras my club.

Thanks to all who have posted support.

As i've mentioned before there are maybe 2 types of fan who goes to Celtic Park - some want to sing all game/wave flags/ bounce about etc , and of course the vast majority want to sit and really take in the game.

Would it not make sense for the club, to get all these likeminded singers together and let them do their thing. This would mean that those who can't be bothered with the singing/flags etc, wouldn't get annoyed etc. In fact a proper singing section, would maybe enhance their match day experience as well.

wrote after wednesdays defeat that in my opinion it was best we had played since adeen game and that only our failure to take one of the5/6 chances gave people chance to slag big TM and certain players

i was delighted that we kept crosas and n'gwemo in mid cause i felt we passed the ball better on wednesday and today was continuation of that and only difference was that we scored 3 out of 5/6 chances

and for those who said we are worst team in 40 years you are joking right
we are a million miles rom finished article but the worst in 40 years not likely

and in a previous thread i stated that these are the kind of games paddy should start but today although his decision making isnt always brilliant
he did allow aiden a bit more space personally although i think paddy might be a bit of a liability in hamburg but as we are already as good as out so i would give him and aiden there head and see what happens

Sitting in the house now after a day of carving pumpkin's and taking the wee man trick or treating, eating my reward of all the sweets he didn't want :)

Glad big Sammi got a goal today, given his exploits midweek, and has BTM finally realised what the rest of us knew about the quality of Crosas's passing and ball retention, hope he gives Crosas a good run in midfield now.

Coincidence that our perofrmance's have improved with the enforced absence of Brown and Maloney, I think not.

And is there any reason why BBC Alba doesn't show Celtic games on their sat evening match programme, it seems to be Aberdeen or Hibs every other week?

Chris Sutton is a Legend, 8:22pm:

Finally I agree.

Last season I would have punted Herr Hinkel and Caddis would have been given his place.

Andreas has played well of late and showed the class I couldn't see last year. Shame for Paul nevertheless...

Ghuys I stand corrected on kev kyle then. I'm shocked at that

AW NAW - I dont really know what you mean? And i stand by my words.

If we look after ourselves it wont matter what anyone else does. They are insignificant to me. I dont believe that the board look to them as a benchmark.

UTLR et al

I support anyone who sings at CP. I cannot understand the different pockets of groups that appear to be in conflict, trying to outdo each other. The 2 best singing performances, continually and recently have been at hearts the other night and the livi game last year.

To me its no coincidence that both were cis cup games with low attendances, meaning guys that want to sit/stand/sing together could. It annoys me that I cannot sit with the guys I go to the game with.

the club should look at getting a proper singing section and I feel the area the GB occupies is ideal - it would be even better if this was a standing section. This is something I firmly believe should be looked at and developed.

Genuine question. What two supporters groups walked out? I didn't notice anything untoward such as a walkout from the jungle bhoys.

West Wales Celt,

Evening guys

How much better was that today??? Really enjoyed the game for the first time in ages and liked how we set up. For me one of McGeady or Maloney is the only way to go at the moment. A bit more quality in January and we should be alright (we need to be patient as this squad is so bloated with mediocre players that it simply cannot be transformed overnight i'm afraid).

I sit in 111 but am not a member of the Green Brigade. In saying that I think they do a great job in creating an atmosphere and was sad to see them, in my view, pretty much being forced to walk out today. Was good to see them stick together though (just wished thse guys hadn't missed one of our better performances)

gallowgate on October 31, 2009 9:45 PM

Absolutely, I think there should be a simple solution

If some of the Bhoys and Ghirls are doing something that is creating a safety issue or if their some sort of conflict or sorts

Then it should be straight forward enough for who ever is stadium director these days to say to UTLR and his team, look this is the deal we are delighted to have your extra support and motivation and then set down some basic rules

I suspect that this is probably in place today

However from time to time the numbers up in the corner may expand and the issue may be down to the attitude when some of the stewards or stewards supervisors are executing their so called harnessing of safety procedures.

Which for the record is important and should not be ignored...

The message is the message, it is all to do with the approach in how the message is delivered

UTLR is obviously closer to this

Looking forward to more support from your ghirls and bhoys that will hopefully create more of a domino effect amongst fellow supporters and help to wake us all up and get the "buzz about the place again"

Sorry I missed your last post - putting the wee one to bed. I hope your still lurking. With reference to the question of debt. No one in their right mind wants the Board to put the Club heavily in debt. I posted last week that I think the Board have blundered big time and have got themselves caught between a rock and a hard place. They failed to strengthen to win the League - let Rangers off the hook, annoyed the supporters who didn't renew season tickets and have deserted in their thousands and lost out on Champions League money as a consequence. Result a massive loss of income.

Solution - strengthen in January and end up with debt or fail to strengthen in January and lose thousands of more supporters, possibly lose out on more CL money and - end up with debt. What's it going to be? We might win the League if the banks force the FOD to sell their saleable players but we will not be able to compete in Europe if we don't strengthen. If we do win the League I don't think anyone will be fooled by a message from the board telling us to renew our season tickets early as they will back the manager's judgement with hard cash.

Chris Sutton is a Legend:

Too right!

Give me Darren and Glen anytime...

(well at least til January and the purchase of a blood-snorting, never-miss-a-header, never-miss-a-tackle CENTRE bl**dy HALF)

...over Captain Reckless and Gazza 'not paid nowhere near enough' Heid...

There's quite a nasty weather system heading over Ireland tonight which will hit Britain tomorrow. It actually looks like it will be centred over Dundee during the match tomorrow. If the game's not called off, a 0-0 draw might be a decent bet.

Great win for the Celts during this the week that wasnay

Woke up from a nightmare in which Celtic had went into administration just as Rangers won the CL.

Please tell if me the media are giving me bad dreams

interesting thought just occured on Rangers.....

when companies go into administration, there are only usually 3 entities who force that action...the first is the banks, the second is the inland revenue, the third is customs and excise...wouldn't it be more than a little ironic if the revenue or customs pulled the plug

the representatives of the crown.....what a thought

bit of a dilemma for them....they can't allow non payment of taxes, and will be forced to take action....that would leave Lloyds further out of pocket if they want to control any administration or otherwise

with a £30 million annual wage bill, Rangers are likely to have a monthly National Insurance bill of around £375k and a Paye bill monthly of £900 k

with a turnover of £40 million the Vat bill will be in the region of £550 k per month

so every month Rangers have to find in excess of £1.8 million to pay the crown

I would keep an eye on this....Lloyds are not the only ones who can pull the trigger

A work colleague who is one of TFOD was at the Hamburg game in The Green Brigade's section. He told me it was one of the best atmosphere's he had ever experienced especially when the fans suddenly started banging on a wall. He didn't seem to be offended by anything that took place.

I also enjoy looking for the banners - An Gorta Mor in a class of its own as well as the very humorous plane shooting down Benfica's Eagle and the banner v Man Utd. Who will forget Scotland's Shame either. There are a lot of supporters who want you in the ground doing your bit to enhance the atmosphere.

I would hope that your group keep persevering but I would plead with you to stand back and think carefully about any sort of vocal demonstartion at Falkirk or disruption of the minute's silence before the game. Celtic will be crucified, supporters will be mortified and have to put up with all sorts of rubbish from media, TFOD and Scotland's 'neutrals'. We will be portrayed as a pariah club and it will definitely damage our ambitions to play in England. You are a sensible poster, please give this your fullest consideration.

Hail! Hail!

Whisper it, a good performance and a victory for Celtic.

Couple of points about the game today.
Firstly attendance; with all the negativity surrounding the club for the last few months the crowds are decreasing.
There have been up to 10,000 being skimmed off for recent games but I just can't see this as a bad thing.
Who do you think are the first ones to go?
They're the ones who moan and they whinge and they hiss and they boo; and that's before Samaras gets the ball.
I think this resulted in a improved atmosphere during the game today even though we scored fairly early on.
Lack of tension/frustration/anger within the crowd and confidence of the players are not wholly unrelated. It's not rocket science, so how some people act during games is beyond me.

Samaras' performance was particularly pleasing considering how he is treated and not just by fans. Scott McDonald just dosen't like him (or anybody), whether this is arrogance or he is insecure about Samaras taking his place I don't know. He moans at him if he dosen't pass and then if he does. There is never any recognition when he gets it right or responsibility when it's McDonald who messes up.In fact he displays all the tendancies of the very supporters who do my head in. Howevah, now Aiden McGeady has also taken to imatating McDonald in this strange behaviour. Not good for team morale.

He has often been critisied for drifting out wide but especially today I feel this is where he is most effective. He has a great turn of pace and seems to glide past opponents. There were some excellent passages of play from him today and if he can perform to this level more consistently then we will have a real player.

Also really pleased for Paddy McCourt today. It is great to watch him becoming a Celtic player after many doubted he would be able to make the grade. McGeady must also enjoy his presence as the opposistion can no longer afford to double up on him.

We are by no means anywhere near where we should be but at least it now feels like there is light at the end of the tunnel. If we can continue to progress against Hamburg then maybe the darkness surrounding the club will be lifted.Hey maybe even the crowds will come flocking back...but do we really want that?

All in all a good day out for the bhoys where the win lose or draw fans can go home without fear of falling into a mine shafting induced coma.

Hail! Hail!

Well pleased with that result today.

I could only listen in to Radio Scotland and had the headphones on. I sure gave the wife and daughter some fright as I jumped out my seat when Aiden scored. Not good timing as they were carving their hallowe'en pumpkin at the time.
Ouch.

Crosas is a must every week. His passing is outstanding. He keeps it simple keeps it quick and keeps it moving. He will love playing with MAF.

SFFS

That was more like it today Bhoys.

The defence is still all over the place, and dragging Danny Fox down with it but, the signs are good elsewhere. Central midfield had movement off the ball and calmness on the ball, with McCourt making opposing defenders look like rabbits caught in headlights every time he goes at them. If Samaras could play like that every week he'd play every week. What a pity he cannot.

Looking forward to Tannadice tomorrow to see if rangers have the money for diesel to get them there.

It did Mouldy67 thanks for remEMbering mate, manflu is crap.
I dedicate the following song to YOU and UTLR,

This is the best balance to a Celtic team I have seen in a couple of seasons.

Both full backs were good, defensively and going forward.
McCourt was excellent, great vision, great variation and of course, always a threat.
McGeady released the ball more than usual and looked a goal threat for a change.
Samaras gave 100%, was left and right and down the centre. He was also his usual frustrating self at times, but deserved his goal after last weeks horror show.

But....the midfield pairing of Crosas and N'Guemo was the key to everything else around them today. They were also excellent against Hearts in midweek and BTM deserves credit for sticking with them.

They were disciplined and industrious and, in Crosas in particluar, we have a player who very rarely surrenders possession of the ball. His vision and variation of pass are a joy to watch. If you doubt Crosas, take some time to watch his use of the ball and his moevemnt off it to provide angles for others.

I don't like to be critical of Celtic players, but this is not the first time Celtic have started to look like a team when Scott Brown is not in the team. As enetgetic as he is and difficult to play against, he just doesn't contribute to the team in the same way others (Crosas, N'guemo, Robson) do.

The downside today was central defence. Kyle won just about everything in the second half that he wanted to, including crosses into our box from both sides and long clearances from their goalkeeper. Another opportunity beckons in January to resolve this achilles heel - it must not be allowed to pass again.

A central defender and a new striker pleeeeeeese Santa.

All so much sharper today with great tempo of which our defenders must get praise for moving the ball on quickly. Thought we deserved even more out of the game as in recent others, with all our midfielders outstanding. I was critical of Aiden in my last comment but thought when he played in the sort of "inside right" position we got the best out of him being closer to the goals, with the opposing full back being pulled into that area and AH playing in right wing support.

As usual DD is again trying to be controversial, maybe the same can be said of your negativity about the Scottishness of the CELTIC support. There are some massive CHIPS on shoulders out there. Not that I'm against the diverse comments on the blog but there seems to more outwith the actual footballing comments?

As for the stay away so called fans, good bloody riddance, you all missed a great performance today. You're all probably in the main the Boohoooers anyway?

For what its worth I NEVER use the Old F tag NEVER - WE are CELTIC end of. Games against rangers I refer to as the huns game or the rangers game. The reason for this is I do not believe in associating ourselves with them in any way. Remember the media tag of OF fans riot in manchester OR 6 OF pull out of scotland squad(= reality Robson sent home and 5 of them pull out) - Anyway what I'm saying is that I Love CELTIC footbal club, they are my religion.

On your 2nd point I never heard our chairman refer to them once. He did speak about debt and the perils of that. he also spoke of manageable and sustainable debt. When pressed if he was refering to der hun he the spoke about hul portsmouth and then even the leeman(?spelling) brothers and other institutions.

Like I said Awe Naw (btw best name on the blog) I dont mean to be rude but i dont really know what you are getting at from one simple post match comment from me - AND I STILL DONT CARE WHAT THEY DO! So if the board do, then I wish they thought like me.

Mrs gordybhoy64

barcabhoy,

talking about Rangers today will ensure no headlines. Only circumspect half hearted analysis. JR is not stupid. A wily and skilled person in the world of politics the media and spin. Hence his only point of reference. Rangers woes and the credit crunch is the veil that is been drawn across our faces to hide our own inadequacies under achievement and missed targets or an alternative agenda. Mind you better that than no analysis and running away from the matters in hand. It would seem to me that we are exhibiting and seeing such behaviour more frequently from our plc and their supporters. I would also say that in the media that this is classic hun behaviour that disgusted us for years and was surely part of the impetus for CQN.

For me the McGeady thing BigJie posted is a penalty, how many times have we been punished for one of our players touching an attacker in our box? Its been happening in Europe for ages, referees give penalties when defenders touch attackers, I dont like it but its modern football, good to see Aiden play the modern game.

There seems to be a false reputation being built that Aiden is a 'diver.' He is one of the most booked players in this league, it used to be for 'back chat' but think he has now calmed that down so refs are targeting alternative ways to book him. Without McGeady we can loose points and the referees know it.

BigJie

Cheers for posting that video, first time I had seen it, PC problems preventing me from trying out my new video programme should be able to try it soon. Cheers.

EN

I posted some stats last year about Marc Crosas, near the end of the season when WGS was playing Hartley/Brown. I can't remember the specifics but the stats were stunning; when Crosas played we won something like 90% of our games, yet when Hartley played it was in the region of 20% or less. Yet WGS went with the dig and experience of Hartley!

So when Mowbray came in I thought Crosas would really flourish. A guy who can pass and move should be perfect for Mowbray's style of play. But he never got a chance.

When he played on Wednesday I thought he was excellent. Passed the ball forward, quickly, always kept the ball moving and always moving into an area to receive a pass or help a team mate.

Another excellent game today.

He is a must. He is a FOOTBALL PLAYER.

The downsizing and the diluting of the clubs ambitions that we are witnessing today is because of risk.

That is to say that our entry into the EPL. Our one and only vision. Is seen as being much further off than ever envisaged before by those that buy and sell our players. Nothing else and the AGM confirmed it.

As for using the term Old Firm we use it all the time officially on our; own web sites, advertisements, press releases

"ignorants" Thats a shocking post which reeks of snobbery and devisiveness, most of the CQN'ers who are unhappy at the boards strategy actually want them to support the manager, Tony Mowbray if successful will succeed in spite of the boards downsizing.
Back Tony Mowbray is the way to improve the quality of the team, an experienced CH and confident/ experienced striker is all thats needed.

Burnley78 thanks for that, and I understand the point that you regularly make on here re the “consumers” and supporters, I wonder who those demonstrating against the board last week believed they were?
Anyway it’s a bit early days for that stuff and I think also anybody booing the team while our players are trying to give of their best is just plain stupid and perhaps they are the consumer you allude to.

Haven't seen any replays of the penalty incident. Did Aiden appeal for a penalty?

If not he can't be booked for diving. Otherwise we get to a situation where any fall in the box is either a penalty or a booking, no in between.

If he appealed and the ref (rightly or wrongly) considered that there was insufficient contact for a foul, then the decision is at least explainable.

This was my proposal the last time he got booked. We tell our players not to claim for anything in the box. If the ref is going to give a penalty he'll give it anyway, regardless of the claim. If you go over but don't claim, it's difficult for anybody to demonstrate that you've tried to con the ref.

I am pleased that Big Tony is playing Marc and Landry, key to success is about ball retention and vision and to a degree tenacity

These guys mix that well

They strolled today and did not bring themselves under pressure

Mainly kept ball well and big improvement on the passing

Crosas = ball retention, keep simple, vision, high ratio of passing accuracy

Landry = the above with the exception that if he makes issue with passes, has the tenacity to fight tiger like to win it back

Re today I remain concerned that we are top of the league and yet seem hell bent, as a crowd, on 'imploding' and 'self destructing' in the way we did last season whiclst our rivals went on to claim the only prize which matters.

It astounds me to see the ignorance of many, even on a great site like this, on the finacnial realities of football. It really annoys me to see this ignorance being played out to beat our club with whilst our opponents accept their financial challenges and galvanise to make the most of their lot.

Our 'ignorants' prefer to align with a ever eager media in generating and maximising the disharmoney which could well see another trawl through a diminishing number of potential managers for what must be one of the least appealing jobs in European Football....Jesus Gil 'eat your heart out' ....

I sincerely hope that Tony gets the result he deserves today to buy some time as we consolidate at the top of the SPL.....if that is not too ironic !

weeminger, that is my general opinion on the dive/foul thing too. If you fall over as a result of contact, if you aren't looking for a penalty, you're conning no-one. Too many referees fail to see the grey area between being fouled and cheating. Especially when it's Aiden McGeady involved.

Mostly happy with today, but I'm going to be a big negative nancy and ask anyone happy with our current fullbacks exactly why they prefer Danny Fox to Lee Naylor? Me and my pal have started watching what he does, and then deciding if Lee Naylor would be crucified for doing the same (answer is almost always a resounding "yes"). Clumsy in the tackle (if he tackles at all), too far forward a lot of the time, not given to tracking back, positionally naive, easily-telegraphed passes, fails to get over to support the centre half inside him if he loses the ball (something Andreas Hinkel has added to his game recently, some of his better contributions in the last couple of gmaes have been to clear up earlier mix-ups). Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Lee Naylor is Ashley Cole or anything. But, whatever his shortcomings, I'm willing to stand up here and state that I think, despite being an utterly terrible crosser of a ball, he's a better defender than Danny Fox. I think Danny is a footballer, but he is very defensively suspect, and what I have seen of Lee Naylor in the games he's been called on this season makes me thing, right now, that he's the better of the two options.

Come January, I'd be stealing Lee Wallace off Hearts to replace either of them (assuming SPL-level is our budget for now).

I haven't posted on here for a while, but I wasn't quite as despondent as some on Wednesday (though I was raging at the time!). Trouble was that we gave them 45 minutes of a headstart while we got the tactics completely wrong. Once someone twigged that Hearts' clumpy centre halves would eat Chris Killen for breakfast in terms of headers and that running at them (yes, that old "playing the footballers" trick), we totally had the beating of them, if anyone could have had stopped having a Sebo for one second). We kept that going today, and it worked this time around. The first half of Wednesday was exactly like last season, when we kept tailoring the team to pander to perceived threats that never actually materialised. Hopefully today has shown that it's really not necessary. Do what we're good at, and it'll come good.

Anyone watch Jools Holland last night?

MWD

Moonbeams wet dream

Cheers for getting back to me re query the other day.

Not sure about the video, when I upload to YT it takes about 10 minutes until you get the 'its uploaded' message. Theres then a wee bit of time for clearance, five minutes or so, even for the biggest MB videos of close to their limit of 100Mb it doesnt take much longer.

Cant think of a reason why your upload would take any longer, what type of file is it?

EN

Speaking of Cuellar. How good of MON was it to tie Bobo into a bilion pounds a week deal - because he knew how great he was, and then when he had to come back to Scotland to snaffle a Centre Half, he put the best part of £6.5m the way of the huns.

Anyway, This wee thought got me thinking of wee Gordon, now resident down Middlesborough way.

I know he is on record this week regarding the quality of the personnel he left at Celtic.

And, come January, if he is looking for a Centre Half, a midfield maestro and a lazy so-n-so to stick the ball in the net, I know many people in here probably think he will sign

Caldwell and/or McManus

Scottie Brown

Scott McDonald

Thereby swelling the Celtic coffers by the best part of £10m.

WELL. Here is my prediction. I think he will plunder Scotland to fill those posts, and I think he will do so by signing,

Bougerra (£4m)

Mendes (£2m)

Boyd.(£500K)

He might even take Davis (£2.5m)

Hope I'm wrong. But would not be surprised to see another ex-Celt manager give a ringing endorsement to his signings, by giving the huns a few million.

Mr. & Mrs. Gordybhoy64,

Thats what I was thinking, I was emailed the demo of Football manager, I know, I know but not played it in years, had a wee nosy and had a search for players we could get on Bosmans, Euzebiusz "Ebi" Smolarek that you talked about before stands out.

Given that all player ratings are from a range of fans theres a bit of credit due to them, his stats are better than the forwards we have, but Im sure theres some un publisised story about him that we dont know of thats taken him to where he is today.

blantyre, aye, have been on a bit of a hiatus from the blog for one reason or another, and haven't really been in the pub much. Hoping to make it to BBs for a pint or three before the Hapoel game, Saturday games are generally a no-no for beers these days.

A few goals, a clean sheet, some entertaining football - not really what we went along expecting today, was it?

Sami was excellent, and it looks like he and McDonald are actually getting-on.

Crosas took resposibility and got himself involved in the game. Looks like he gets confidence from being part of a winning tea.

Landry kept passing the ball to his own players.

Heid did some good stuff and forgot to spoil it with the usual slips.

McGinn showed that he can break through the middle, and in doing so added something we've been missing since Liam Miller's two-month-wonder 'era'.

MAF looked quality all across the frontline when he came on (ie, through the middle, not just wide).

Is Hinkel our best attacking full-back in the 30 years I've been going to Parkhead? Can't think of a better one (might be the booze, though)

So much for clubs not being afraid to take the game to Celtic any more. Killie started with 5 attack-minded players (for a change), and were 2 down in 30 mins. Cheers, Jeffries! More of that from Hibs and the 10 diddy teams, please!

They're just a few of the positives.

Negatives? Not many. Aiden didn't seem to complain much about his yellow. If he's dived again, I'm not happy - means he wanted a pen for himself rather than to set-up a team-mate. Great goal though! I'm sure Collum, who's been worse, was happy enough to book him - he didn't seem too bothered about Sammon's dive in the first-half though.

I'm not holding-out any particular hope for the Hamburg game. Our Europa ship has sailed, and respectability will suffice in the remaining games. However, here's hoping for more of what we saw today in the league games.

What is the stars

Missed the winner you posted but went for the four 'lucky' fifteen, horses account is still open with a minimal balance, now down to 50p bets on tips to see if it grows. Friday night was so unlucky, thats the most interest Ive had on a horse, learned a wee lesson, Im taking the blame as I text it too a lot of people, that always jinxes things..

EN

BTW,

did anyone put a name to the player John Reid mentioned yesterday that we were on the verge of signing last Jan as he had fallen out with his manager, but the day before he was due to sign for us his team sacked the manager and he stayed on. All I know is that he said the team in question were in a Northern League.

I might just be a tad on the slow side on the uptake on this, but any answers would be appreciated!

MWD

Thank You!

My own tuppence worth on todays game,

Positives

Lots! Samaras was outstanding, all over the place and even when he gave it away he worked hard to get it back. Why cant he play like this every week?

Hinkel was my man of the match, involved in every positive aspect in our game aswell as 3 assists, would have had a goal had he received a better pass.

N'guemo and Crosas were very good in possesion although I worry Crosas is too lightweight to play in a 2 man (centre) midfield. He did however get very little protection from the referee who allowed 2 shocking challenges on him.

Fortune returning and showing us why we missed him, he came in bullied the Kilmarnock defence Chris Sutton style, keep it up Marc.

Negatives

The defence (Hinkel apart), Fox, Caldwell and Loovens were all guilty of being too careless in possesion.

Also, Kevin Kyle (who was excellent today) won every high ball in the air, Kilmarnock also had several free headers and really should have scored and gotten back into the game undeservedly. There is no point playing well and then conceding silly goals.

McGeady getting booked for diving again.

Estadio

A thousand apologies for that lucky 15.Really shouldnt have posted it.
My gut feeling was danis girl and leave it at that but then felt that those other 4 might be thereabouts. As it turned out the only one that won was 6/4

I missed most of the Tosh period, so will defer to you on that one. You're bang-on about Agathe though - also one of our best defensive full-backs to boot. Other than those 2? Tam Boyd was quality, but couldn't cross like Hinkel.

I actually think Caddis could be at least as good as most of the above, seems to be good attacking and defensively despite his stature, but I can't see him getting the chance unless Hinkel wants to move in the next year.

westmuir kev

i thought the McGeady incident was a certain pen, i was sure the ref would give it

but Aidens reaction wasan't what i expected, he seemed reluctant to challenge the ref's decision,

EDB

Paul67 has talked a lot regarding season ticket sales and how they were holding up in the face of fan disaffection regarding the playing style.

Now we have 40K as the attendance number we should be working too.
This in the face off club figures showing 58K as this seasons home crowds.

Consequently something is happening regarding the crowds / season ticket sales and the way the club is / will be reporting them.

I see any move to make a crowd of 40K acceptable as another step in PL's "Animal Farm" narrative regarding his travails as the man in charge.

FMcC = Built it and they will come.
PL = Spout enough p*sh and they will beleive, eventually.

Will his bonus be reduced in light of our falling attendances?
40K instead of 58/60K = £6-7mill down in ticket sales.
Especially if this reduction includes a halving of the £1500 season tickets in the North Stand.

Far removed from RK's 2006 cameo where all the homes games were sold out.
Consequently the question was justified and I await an answer.

Think you may be right about the booking being harsh - I heard mention there was some contact. All credit to MWD for putting the video together, to the club for putting it on and for the great intro and to the Celtic fans for a tremendous response.

I had a big lump in my throat at the end today. But mostly I felt pride at what Celtic fans can do.

Celtic SFA-Dallas penalty embargo continues.

There appears to be no problem giving other teams like Hearts in midweek penalties but when it comes to giving them to Celtic referees are turning a blind eye.
Lost count of the number of penalties we should have had been given this season.
Our lead in the title could be huge had stonewallers v Dundee United at home and at Ibrox been given.

STH get your letter off to Dallas asking "when will the embargo be lifted?"

The point I was trying to make really, was that, given that WGS signed (Caldwell, Brown, McDonald), how bloody disapointing will it be when he has the choice, he goes for (Bougerra, Mendes, Davis, Boyd).

Three of the four huns I mention, he could have bought for the 'tic if he'd wanted. (and had the scouting system). I mean, Uncle Wattie had been out the domestic game for nearly six years, but after 4 months back at the huns picks up Bougerra, FFS.
