John Kennedy reaches the end of the road
There was an air of excitement when Kenny Dalglish announced his team for the final game of season 1999-2000. Six teenage debutants were given a start and a popular Swede made the bench after a lengthy layoff.
John Kennedy was the pick of the bunch. He got the nod ahead of current Celtic captain, Stephen McManus, despite being a year younger, and was set to make steady progress for the next four years.
It all peaked spectacularly in March 2004. Celtic beat Barcelona 1-0 in the first leg of their Uefa Cup tie but Bobo Balde and Rab Douglas were suspended for the return in the Nou Camp, forcing Martin O'Neill to select 20-year-old Kennedy to partner Stan Varga in central defence with younger-still David Marshall in goal.
Marshall produced the greatest ever Celtic goalkeeper performance, while Kennedy took on Ronaldinho, the world's greatest player, who would be reduced to pulling the young central defender's shirt before the game was through. It was a special time in our history. We had beaten a great team and did so with new, young, talent who came through our youth system.
A week later John was the victim of a savage attack on his knee during his Scotland debut against Romania at Hampden. Subsequently, five and a half years of recuperation ended this week when he was told by doctors that his knee would never be strong enough for him to play professional football.
Best wishes to John, I hope he finds a fulfilling career after football.

....such a tragedy.
Good luck, John
Well Done lhads
Thougths with John Kennedy, and again i wonder why Celtic Players put temselves through all the guff playing for Scotland, since the days of Billy McNeill when the so called selection committe would pass him by in favour of others even to the playing of Ian Ure before him, not to mention the ibrox connection up to the present day just look at some of the laptop loyal's reports and markings for yesterday's debacle in Wales, it makes you wonder
blantyretim
Hope you have a great hangover from last nights do for Kano I was with you in spirit(Smirnof)
Brilliant result last night Bhoys and Ghirls. I wish I could have been there, I would have been tempted to sneak onto the Inverclyde bus - few familiaer faces there from what I can see of Monnbeams photos! What an effort by so many people, if we could inject half of that spirit into the team we would win the Big Cup again.
Hail hail
""John Kennedy was the pick of the bunch""
that sums up the career he was meant to have.
God, how I wish he playing for us now.
we good do with him.
Hail hail to john kennedy.
MWD-photos are awesome
To everybody that came to the Kano race night or wished us well, thank you so much. The night was stunning but was over in a flash.
The total raised in the campaign of £60k is unbelievable.
Paul67 thank you for allowing us to use this blog to bring Martin Home. We are moving ever closer to our dream!
We have a paypal raffle coming up soon with some great prizes so that people that wanted to buy raffle tickets for the race night, can now take part.
More on that later in the week, as I'm having a few days break!!
Hail Hail to the Celtic family you have done us proud
CRC
All the best for the future John. Shocking tackle that ruined your career son. Can still see it now.
MWD
Just so sad , I had to give up my sport at 28 years , so l know what's in front of him.God help him
All the best ,Think Celtic has been robbed of a legend .
Hail Hail
MTT
Very sad news regarding John kennedy, but unfortunately, not unexpected.
We have been robbed of a potentially outstanding centre half, we could certainly do with him in the team just now. I really hope the club organise a benefit match for John at the end of the season as he's been through alot in the last five years.
Hail Hail John Kennedy.
Celticrollercoaster, stunning stuff. I’ll write an article tomorrow on last night and the campaign so will leave my thoughts on what you have all achieved until then.
Sad for JK and Celtic, I wish him all the best. Was really hoping he would make it, I remember seeing the challenge clearly, what annoyed me more was the seemingly complete indifference of his team mates at the time.
John was a future Celtic captain I have no doubt about that.
Good luck JK.
MWD and Gordon_j,
Well done you Bhoys for all your efforts too and everyone who helped organise this appeal.
I was very moved to see the film of the progress at Chez Kano.
£60k is a fantastic amount to raise.
The downside is,as you say, your back to posting all things Celtic.
Roll on the rubbish..!! ;)
Ironbhoy.
Of all the articles Paul has written this one should be a stand alone article in my opinion, by that I mean that it should be kept for tributes to JFK alone, I know that other causes are extremely credible and I don't wish to diminish them this one should be for John.
I felt and still feel horror at the vicious and cowardly tackle which ended your career big man, who knows what heights you could have reached but what was revealed was your determination and courage in your rehab attempts, with that determination and will power I can only imagine your presence in our defence.
Good luck in whatever field you choose and I hope you have a good lawyer to go after the b....rd
Paul, what's the chances of the club giving John a testimonial?
Well done all the fund raisers.

fair comment.

Good luck to Big John in whatever he does next.
The courage he has shown after one of the most horrific injuries you will ever see has been quite amazing. Most people would have given up many years back.
paul67
Nice thread.
Good luck John Kennedy you lived the dream, and will always be a part of the Celtic Family.
Nice tributes too on the Norwich websites, where John Kennedy did very well, and made friends.
I suspect lesser men would have called time on their playing career much sooner than this brave
young Celt.
Celtic v Norwich for the benefit match?
HH
On a negative note I feel very angry at a no mark footballer who destroyed John's playing career, the needlessness of the game is all the more heartbreaking, talk about wishing an eye for an eye on someone,John Kennedy's situation has played on my mind since I saw the news on Sky as I never really understood the full extent of how bad his injury had affected him and was waiting on him returning to the team,I really am gutted by the news so gutted in fact I can even look back on Ian Durrants injury with some sympathy, when you think of some of the players in the game that have long careers its just sickening.
On a positive note, perhaps its fate,John's destiny just beginning,I really hope his passion for the game is fulfilled and more importantly at this stage, still there,I pray the Bhoy still gets the butterflies in his stomach when he thinks about the game when he wakes up in the morning and drives him on to the success he deserves.
Good luck to him whatever he does,he'll never walk alone.
On Kano's night
What an achievement and I suppose like a great player,Martin has galvanised the support in a positive way, thats a great thing,I wish him and his family all the best.

good luck john kennedy i would like to see the club give the boy a benifit game against barcelona against the club he had his finest game all the best in the future jk just hope the club looks after you
If anyone merits a benefit game it should be John - I beleive he never really got money from the club - south of $900 per week and the club paid all his medical expenses.
Paul, is this likely to happen ...
I'm absolutely gutted for big John he was destined for greatness and stupid tackle by some thug has robbed us of a true talent. From a personal point of view also its hard to take as i also suffered the same injury playing last year and i'm in the final stages of my rehab praying that i can get back to the way i was and it's stories like this that send a shiver up my spine, god only knows how he is able to take it he's a braver man than me anyway.I hope he is able to get on with life and find sucess in whatever he turns to next.
MB
....the stars
are you for real ?
south of $900 per week, i'd bite your hand off and brother walfrid your head
HazyJane, I take your point but he has no future career now..
i will never forget watching the tackle on big john in that meaningless scotland game, the thing that sticks out in my mind is the non reaction from so called team mates to this horrendous tackle,in particular steven pressley who was nearest to the tackle,he should have been steaming straight in to sort out this thug who cowardly stamped on john whilst he lay on the deck, what did pressley do??
absolutely nothing, ive never forgiven pressley for that non reaction,to me it was nothing short of criminal,he was supposed to be a team mate of johns and yet he showed no loyalty or passion for his comrade who had been badly injured
anyways all the best big man,you surely would have gone on to be one of the true greats for celtic
hail hail
Hello all,Just want to say a few words to the "bhoys" back in Glasgow, Leven and around the world,as Martins brother in law,who goes in and see's him almost every day for the last year.He is a brilliant man who never had a bad word to say about anyone and always enjoyed a laugh and a good arguement with anyone willing to participate(and still does).I can never thank you all enough for what you have all done for Martin and family. You have grabbed this horrible situation with the balls and took it as far as you can.Being here I see what all are going through and all I can see is Martins family wanting him home back in his own environment.I cannot express enough how I feel about what you have all done for Martin. You are all TRUE HEROES.I probably am one of two out of the Kane family who are from the other side(Rangers Supporter).I know from seeing what happened to Martin and family that it's not all about Football or hating the opposite team or religion,it's about helping in times of need!!You guys have gave us the inspiration to go on and get this man home to his family in time for Christmas and for evermore.I have only one thing left to say to all involved,if there's a GOD then let him bless you all.You truly are special!!!!!!!!!
P.S
Thanks to Dave,Scott,(Nu-Ceil Services, Boral Plasterboard Perth)and to my brilliant workmate Jamie.
Scot, Roz's husband.
Have spoken to a couple of the guys from last night, and seen some of the photos too. What you have done over the past few months is amazing, and we cannot thank you enough for all the hard work and effort that you have put in. Without your help Martin would not be home for Xmas, this will be a very special time for us all here in Australia and we cannot express how much it means to Martin and all the family.
THANK YOU FROM ALL THE KANE FAMILY IN SCOTLAND AND AUSTRLIA.
XXX
I was lucky enough to have been present that night in the Camp Nou when big John was immense.
The quality of his tackling, heading, his pace, he was a true rock upon which Barcelona's waves of attacks broke and foundered.
Both JK and David Marshall's performances will no doubt be remembered by those Barca players for many's a year.
We all have our own ideas of as to the potential JK had, but its when you hear the stories of Neil Lennon saying that he would have gone onto to be the greatest centre-half in Celtic's history and Gordon Strachan telling of how when he first arrived at Celtic Park being told they have a giant of a man and defender, it makes you realise what a real talent has been lost to football due to the horrendous assault that took place on his knee in a stupid meaningless "friendly".
I hope Colin Cameron struggles to look himself in the mirror for a while after this news. His remarks after that game were shameful from a so-called team-mate.
Good Luck in whatever you do JK, and if there is indeed a benefit match for you, I'll be there to salute you big fella.
From an ex-Coltness Bhoy to a Cleland Bhoy - HAIL! HAIL! Big Mhan.

I missed Cameron's comments, do you have a link? Or if not a rough idea of what he said?
TTT,
Well said re big Kennedy, its doubly sad when you see the players currently filing a position that should have been.
Undoubtedly a "first name on the teamsheet" type player. Its been mentioned on CM that he will get a testimonial and a job with Celtic. If true thats great.
You missed a cracking night last night mate, you would have loved the craic and I was sober!!
Sebo
after the game, Cameron (team mate of Ganea at the time at wolves) said that he wasn't a dirty player
though after seeing the tackle again he retracted his statement and said it was a horrific tackle

Thank you for organising a very special night for Kano last night, this was very much enjoyed and it was also great to meet fellow CQN’rs of the Celtic Family.
A great, but tearful at times Celebration for Martin
To create the platform and drive that helped to raise 60,000 is just incredible, you should be very proud of your efforts and commitment.
From the Saturday morning 20/06 up to last night 14/11, in such a short period of time is just amazing
I have just watched the photo slide show and again this makes me feel happy to see so many people being happy in the knowledge that Martin will be home soon
Meeting you guys had totally inspired myself in recent months, very proud to be a Celtic Fan today
Hail Hail

All the best for the future John.
Very Sorry for big John Kennedy but he will have some wonderfull memories good luck in whatever you do next big guy.On the subject of centre backs you must wonder at George Burley choosing McManus and Caldwell we shipped 3 goals at Falkirk and it could have been more surely this should have told him about there confidence and form at the moment. Also Fox has lost form and is looking very ordinary and yet Burly staked his future on all three?Dundee Utd next Sunday is going to be a nail biter for us oh the Joys of supporting the Hoops.Last but no means least well done to everyone who has generously supported Kano during his hour of need.
Jonnybhoy,
Aye, the pics are great - talking of which, what the hell is that on your chin :-) - and sounds like it was a great night. I sent BT a text earlier and about 20 mins ago mrs BT replied saying that he was still in his bed and hadn't surfaced all day!!
BTW, sober?? What happened did they only have the 2 kegs of Guinness for ye? :-)
As to JK, that's good to hear that he'll get the testimonial and if he manages to get a job with the club into the bargain, even better for the big fella.
See you in 2 weeks?

Bodom Bhoy/Give the baw to Sebo,
I didn't know he had retracted his earlier comments, about ganea and the tackle. Suppose that's something, but the way he jumped to Ganea's defence so quickly will still be something I won't forget.
Not that that will make any difference to him of course, or JK for that matter.

too little to late. Shocking tackle that were was never any excuse for defending.
I was only 14/15 watching that game against barcelona, then was at ibrox for the following game.
Sat here at 20 feeling robbed of a potentially great Celt.
Hope Big John stays in the game, hell, he could teach our current defenders a thing or twelve. Give him a coaching job.
Lullabies and Battle Cries - you have mail my friend.
Plenty to say about last night and the end of my involvement with the Kano campaign, but that will keep for tomorrow with my head a bit less fuzzy!
Absolutely gutted for big John, but we all knew in our hearts what was going to happen. The guy in the States, Steadman?, is a very gifted man, but he's not a miracle worker.
I stopped going to testimonials and friendlies a long time ago, as they mostly involve the exploitation of our loyal fanbase, but if there's a game for John then I'll be there.
Well done to the club for standing by him over the last few years, they owe him nothing.
Most of us will have a bitter taste in our mouths when we think of the numerous Scotland call-offs from "Scotland's second biggest institution"!

TTT,
Looking forward to a good few in 2 weeks deffo.
BT was feeling no pain later on thats for sure :) but in his usual good form.

Some perspectives from a few years back.
1. Ganea.
Ioan Ganea's horror tackle on John Kennedy has left him facing a year on the sidelines with mangled ligaments, and Ganea doesn't know how his boot touched his knee! Ganea was blasted by furious Hoops boss MON, who branded his tackle in Scotland’s 2-1 defeat ‘horrendous’. But the striker said: “I’m very upset about this. I don’t know yet if I will help him by funding part of the operation’s cost or if I’ll contact Kennedy to apologise myself. My club-mate Colin Cameron called on Thursday and I was in shock when he told me Kennedy would be out for a year. I’m all alone in England, my wife and children are back in Romania and I couldn’t talk about this problem with anybody. I couldn’t sleep after I heard. I know Kennedy is very upset and I will keep in touch with him via Cameron. But God knows I’d no intention of causing harm. At half-time I saw the TV replays three times and don’t understand how this tragedy happened. How could I do that to him? He was first to tackle and I don’t understand why he made that tough tackle on me. Ganea’s wreckless challenges have landed him in hot water before. Danish ace Christian Poulsen was sidelined for six months after being crocked by Ganea in a Euro 2004 qualifier last September. Ganea added: “It wasn’t my fault. I put my boot on Poulsen’s leg by mistake — I don’t know how my boot touched Kennedy’s knee either."
2. Stan Varga
Ganea has apologised for the tackle time and time again, but Celtic Defender Stanislav Varga has claimed that Ganea was a liar. The Celtic Defender says that Ganea did mean to hurt Kennedy and claims that if Ganea says otherwise, he is lying. "If he says he didn't mean to hurt John, I don't think he's telling the truth." said Varga
3. Colin Cameron
Colin Cameron, the Scotland midfield player who is also a team-mate of Ganea's at Wolves, defended his colleague. "He's just a 100 per cent guy who won't even pull out of tackles in training. I don't think there is any malice in him. It's just his style," said Cameron. "I'm gutted for John but you are talking about two guys who are honest and went for the ball."
4. Craig Burley
The former Celtic and Scotland midfield player, Craig Burley, who was summarising at the game for television, countered: "The tackle was an absolute disgrace. I'm surprised there weren't more Scotland players reacting to the incident."
evening all...
have I missed anything....

I was lucky enough to be supporting Celtic when George Connelly came into the team, was at Hampden that day in 1969 when Rangers were crushed 4-0. Jimmy Johnstone did not play that day, but George Connelly did, scored the third goal too. Connelly played in both matches against Leeds United in the European Cup semi-finals, scoring the winner at Elland Road. He came on as a substitute in the 1970 final. We often consider George as the one that got away, the one that walked away, and that is true, but he also played over 250 matches for Celtic, 4 league titles, Scottish Cup medals League Cup finals, and got capped for a very good Scotland team. For example in October 1973 Scotland defeated Czechoslovakia 2-1 at Hampden, to reach the 1974 World Cup Finals; midfield of Bremner Holton Connelly. He did not go to Germany but he helped Scotland get there. Only two Scottish caps, but you see the level he was playing at. A great talent, and a great loss to football, but not one we were denied the opportunity to see. I was at all three Hampden games I have mentioned, a Scottish Cup Final, a European Cup Semi-final and a World Cup qualifier. John Kennedy played less than 50 games for Celtic, and though a different type of player than George Connelly, I believe he would have been as influential. Alongside Bobo Balde I am convinced Celtic would have recently completed six in a row. By 26 George Connelly had walked away from Celtic, at the same age John Kennedy is being forced to retired. Given that George shared in greatness I have to conclude that John is the greater loss to Celtic.

Remember JK's first game well. It was against Dundee Und and we won comfortably after a poor poor season. The sun was shining and there was real hopes of better days ahead.
Someone suggested a testimonial for him against Barcelona. That would be apt and wouldn't it be great if Henrick could make a guest appearance for both sides.
My congratulations to all who have done such great work for Kano. The Celtic support make us proud once again. Thank you one and all.

I can remember a statement a few years back when Paul Lambert was talking about the young guys in the squad. He said John Kennedy was a man at 16. He meant mentally and emotionally mature as well as being built like the side of a house.
The bravery, dignity, resilience and hard work he has shown is an example to everyone and it is sad that all his effort has come to this. But, as Paul lambert mentioned before John is emotionally mature enought to cope and any bitterness is well hidden. I wish him nothing but good forune, he deserves it.
Well done to all the guys who continue to help our other brave fighter, Kano.

To think of all the footballers that are making a very good living from the game and are mediocre at best makes my blood boil, especially when I see a player that could, and most probably would have been a legend having to give up the game at the age of 26.

Thanks Big JK for a great somewhat short career, you are a part of one or two of my most memorable occassions as a follower of Celtic.
1. Barcelona, there with my son that night, absolutely drenched in the most amazing thunder storm before the game at the bottom of La Ramblas waiting on the buses to take us to Camp Nou.
2. Killie, star performance on a championship winning day, again there with my son.
You gave me & him a couple of great memories, all the best in your next career. Hail hail big man..
Evening CQN'ers just back from the KANO do, via a trip to the Port of Glasgow, what a great night and everyone I met seemed to be a having a blast.
One of those who was unable to attend last night was Pablo, he was involved at the very start of the KANO fundraising, although he wasn't there last night, I hope he has a warm feeling knowing he was part of the "Celtic family" who was there to help one of his own.
Great credit to the organisers and helpers last night, you helped to make it special.

Re the great George Connolly. I remember one of the earliest Celtic games my late father took me to , a young George, probably still a schoolboy gave the most amazing display of keepy uppy at half time, on the pitch and right round the track. there was a huge crowd -- might have been a European game (possibly Real Madrid?) Can any of the older bloggers remember? Not too long after that I was listening on the radio as he scored the only goal against Leeds Utd at elland Rd in the European cup. Leeds were the Barca of their day at that time. Happy days!
Gut wrenching, totally gut wrenching.
All the best to JK and his familly.
I had hoped for JK and O'dea in Jan going forward.

I also was privileged enough to watch both players, what a centre-back pairing those two would have made. Connelly for me was the most gifted Celt I've ever watched.

I wish him all the best, tragic for him at only 26, but he showed a hell of a lot of courage to even attempt to come back after such a horrific injury. Rather stop now than become permanently crippled later in life.

Exactly rbf. I have had an ACL reconstruction myself and they nearly always are accompanied by soft tissue and cartillage damage in the knee. The cartillage nearly always has to be removed. Playing on could very well leave him with arthritis and needing knee replacements if he was to continue to suffer damage in his knees. It's very nasty and I feel sorry for him - I know he is so highly thought of north of the border and there's a good chance that had not injury intervened he would have been Celtic's and possibly Scotland's captain by now. A truly sad case of a talent prevented from blossoming.

I was at the game. Somehow I thought it was when Kiev knocked us out after Lisbon which would put it at the Autumn of '67. Kiev were an excellent side in those days.
Also for reasons lost to me now I was in the "Rangers" end where I wouldn't normally be.
Great shame for a player who was clearly going on to be a great player/captain for club and country.
glendalystonsils, have to take issue with you on the assertion Leeds Utd were the Barca of that era, they weren't, Celtic were!

Hail Hail.
I can remember George Connolly coming through into the first team - I was just a boy at the time, honest. He was probably the most talented of the group, which is saying something when you consider the careers that many of them went on to have.
Just before last year's CQN Fives there was a lot of discussion about George and so on the day I asked Danny McGrain just how good he thought George was.
Danny smiled before saying that he had never known a player who could make so much time for himself through his ability and awareness. Special was the word he used

Dinamo Kiev did indeed knock us out the season after Lisbon.
1967/1968 was the first season UEFA used seedings and they based these seedings on which clubs had reached the final previously.
They also seeded teams from countries who had supplied finalists too.
As well as Celtic drawing a tough tie in Kiev in the first round, Real Madrid were drawn against Ajax and only scraped through after extra time.
The away goals rule was also introduced to the European Cup (for the first 2 rounds only) that season.

you are thinking of 1968-9 season
Sir R Kelly announced that he felt that no Western European club should be required to face an Eastern Bloc team after the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968.
Needless to say there was no such reservation about a Celtic team spending most of the summer of 1966 touring the USA who were at that time engaged in savage warfare in Vietnam.
Celtic had been drawn with Ferencvaros Budapest and after RK's lobbying of UEFA, the European Cup 1st Rounbd was redrawn.
Celtic were drawn against St Etienne, and beat them and RS Belgrade (Jinky's night about the 4 goal first leg lead) before losing 0-1 over 2 legs in the QF v eventual winners AC Milan.
Oh no I've started a seeding debate!

thoughts at the end of the weekend.....
great effort by all of those raising money for a very worthwhile cause, those who drove this are to be applauded and reflect the values of our club
sad but inevitable news on john kennedy....however, i feel we haven't seen the last of john's contributions to Celtic.....some people just have an aura about them, john is one such individual...he will be a success and a leader in future
at a time when we have lost someone who was projected to be our centre half for a decade, it is sad that we didn't make full use of the last good one we had....bobo, has been a tower at valenciennes....playing every game now he is fit, scoring, being man of the match and pushing valenciennes into a european place.....gordon strachan may know a lot about football, however i would venture he hasn't got the slightest idea about centre halves....mcmanus and caldwell ahead of bobo was a scandalous misuse of resources
finally i have to admit to some confusion over Rangers accounts....whilst i managed to more or less exactly forecast the final results for the year...i was out considerably in what i thought the interest charge would be
in the first half of the year the interest charge was £1.42 million however in the second half that had dropped to £933,000 .....this goes against previous years when the 2nd half interest charge has always been greater than the 1st half
i can only think of one explanation for this , and that the first half included an arrangement fee for renegotiating a facility....however statements by the new chairman would indicate that the facility was finally agreed in the last 3 months since he took over from murray
something doesn't add up
finally a question for CQN'rs......is anyone else having a problem with their sky signal.....i haven't been able to get sports or movies now for 3 weeks, along with other assorted channels such as channel 5 .....other channels are working fine......

In 1968/1969 we were drawn to play Ferencvaros of Hungary in the first round of the European Cup.
In August 1968, the Russians invaded Czechoslovakia and by way of protest, Celtic withdrew from the tie.
Other West European clubs threatened similar action and UEFA decided to re-draw the first round and keep the West and East teams apart.
However a number of the East European teams objected and withdrew from the competition.
We ended up playing St Etienne in the re-drawn first round.
After a first leg 2-0 defeat in France Celtic won 4-0 at home in one of the great European nights.
Jock Stein, writing in the Celtic View, described the St Etienne result as "better than Lisbon".

Attending supporters’ clubs.
Not to my knowledge. I have never once heard of such a thing, but have close friends who are signed up voting-rights members of Real Madrid and Seville and I will ask them.
Barcelona and Real Madrid have supporters’ clubs all over Spain and, to be fair to the players, the distances are simply too great for people to make an appearance the way our Bhoys do in Scotland and Ireland.
My Real Madrid supporting friend became a very close pal of Robert Prosinecki’s when he played at the Bernabéu, but that was because they met while walking their dogs.
Paul and ParkheadcumSalford John Kennedy did not make his debut in the season finale against Dundee United. He first appeared on April 5 , 2000 v Motherwell, 4-0 at home coming on as a sub for Tommy Johnson. He made another 3 sub apps before starting in the last game. The debutants v United were Jim Goodwin ,John Convery, Ryan McCann, Brian McColligan and Liam Miller.
The Token Tim ; Yes, while Cameron later diluted his statement I reckon it was because of the opprobrium heaped upon him for his original disgraceful comments. Would he have thought the same if Ganea had worked one on him at training ?

A wee report by a poster on KDS.
'Absolutely cracking game that saw City emerge as deserving winners. Celtic's best spell came after they had a player red carded for tackle that probably showed too much stud for the ref. Celtic took the lead shortly after but City fought back in the 2nd half to go in front. With 2 games to play they can only throw it away. City have been around for a while and Celtic Ladies should be pleased with how far they have progressed in their short lifetime.'

Tom English: 'UEFA's vows on racism are about as hollow as its threats to Rangers'Premium Article
THE MEN of UEFA live in a parallel universe, a place of privilege and certainty, a world where nobody questions anybody or anything and where everything they do is right and proper. They're the Stepford Blazers, their righteous path illuminated by the Nyon lights.
So you end up with a situation whereby Michel Platini announces a zero tolerance policy against racism, where he bangs a table and puts on an angry face and says he is drawing a line in the sand against the bigots and will bring down the Sword of Dam
ADVERTISEMENTocles on the animals who abuse players. And everybody stands and applauds. All those UEFA officials congratulate Platini and say pity those racists of European football when Michel gets his hands on them. Oh yes. In their world, Platini becomes a hardliner on racism simply because he says he is, even though he is not, even though there are countless examples of UEFA being woefully weak on the haranguing of black players in its competitions.
But that's our interpretation, not UEFA's. Parallel universe, folks. Before Platini assumed office in Switzerland, these were the type of things that went on. Real Madrid were fined ?9,700 (£8,700) for their fans' constant racist chants and Nazi salutes in a game against Bayer Leverkusen. Brugge were fined a little under £8,000 for abusing black players against Utrecht. The Slovakians were fined £27,000 – basically, a pound a racist -for constant monkey chants directed at England's Emile Heskey and Ashley Cole. "It wasn't just one section of the stadium, it was the whole stadium," said Heskey.
Those were the bad old days, of course. Since then, Platini was voted into the top job at UEFA on the back of a campaign of getting tough on the people who drag football into the gutter. The zero-tolerance policy has been introduced and here are the results.
In March last year, the fans of Zenit St Petersburg gorged themselves on a feast of bigotry when Marseille travelled to Russia for a UEFA Cup tie. Bananas were thrown onto the pitch at Marseille's black players and there was wholesale monkey chanting and all manner of foul behaviour. Zenit fans revelled in their policy of refusing to accept black players at their club. For their actions, they were fined ?36,000 (£32,200). They went on to win a competition they should have been thrown out of had Platini been true to his hardline rhetoric.
That's one example of many of UEFA's supposed hardline attitude. There are many, many others. That's its zero tolerance in action. This is what Platini said: "Football must teach values to Europe – honesty, courage, fraternity, tolerance and peace. Football includes, integrates, and welcomes. It excludes no one, it discriminates against no one, it persecutes no one."
There are many black players around Europe who could challenge Platini on that assertion, but what's the point? He's convinced he is right. Everybody around him is convinced he is right. They all think that a ?36,000 fine is a proper punishment, a message to the bigots, a deterrent.
On Thursday, UEFA's control and disciplinary committee handed down an ?20,000 (£17,900) fine to Rangers for the behaviour of some of their fans in Bucharest. To many – including a lot of fretful Rangers fans – this was a major let-off for the club, a gentle slap on the wrist when some were half-expecting something more severe. This was Rangers' third time in the dock after all. And that's not counting the riots of Manchester in May 2008, a full-scale horror show that UEFA washed its hands of.
In UEFA's book, 18 grand is about right for what happened in Bucharest. No fans invaded the pitch, no players or officials were attacked, the match wasn't halted or abandoned. These are the things it looks out for more than anything else. It has been genuinely tough on teams who've messed with the "sanctity of the playing area". The pitch, says one UEFA official, is a "holy place". Clearly, the same attitude does not extend to the terraces, where you can chant what you like and throw what you like without having to face the full rigour of UEFA justice.
Celtic, for instance, got fined £25,000 when one of their fans ran on to the "holy place" and brushed his hand off the head of Dida in the AC Milan goal. Fair enough, they deserved a real sanction. But it's a strange kind of justice that sees that offence as more serious than what happened in Bucharest – even allowing for the mitigation of aggressive stewarding at the stadium in Romania.
UEFA's vows on racism – "we will abandon games and dock points and throw teams out of major championships," says Platini – are about as hollow as its threats to Rangers to come down heavy on them if they repeat offend. In Platini's world, UEFA believes that its words pack a punch, it believes that Rangers' fans will be cowed by the fine. It says that a ?20,000 fine for Rangers is a serious punishment. Zenit, after all, didn't get a whole lot more despite their hateful behaviour against Marseille. The point here, though, is that UEFA routinely sets the punishment bar so low for these offences that any comparison is rendered ridiculous.
The lack of morality within UEFA can be told through many different stories. Here's one. In 2006, a group of Middlesbrough fans, women and children included, were set upon in Rome ahead of a UEFA Cup match against Roma that same evening. Three were stabbed. The visiting fans were also attacked inside the stadium as the match was going on. A couple of years ago, Manchester United fans were targeted by Roma thugs. Earlier this year an Arsenal supporter was stabbed outside Roma's Stadio Olimpico.
Roma fans are notorious in Italy. They have a charge sheet in Serie A as long as your arm and they show little sign of learning their lesson. And yet when UEFA sits down to decide which club should host the 2009 Champions League final they gave the showpiece match to Roma. Some Sword of Damocles, eh?
Some say that Rangers got lucky last week. UEFA disagrees and in its delusion we know everything we need to know about its zero tolerance.

Thanks to all those who came along to the race night last night we had a fantastic evening of fun laced with some emotion and tears. It was great to meet Martin’s dad Matt for the first time and listen while he gave a wee speech thanking all involved in the campaign from its outset through to conclusion as well as all those who donated time, money and prizes. He truly was a credit to Martin and the Kane family.
£60,000.00 is an amazing, outstanding, fantastic, brilliant... total! Our Celtic family will never cease to amaze me. An outstanding effort by each and every last person involved.
It is a pleasure being part of this blog, without which Kano’s situation would never have become so close to all our hearts. We also have to thank Kit for informing us of Kano’s situation back in November, as well as Pablo, Oldtim67, McGrainInSpain, Aldo67 & DBBIA for running for starting off the Bringing Martin Home campaign before Celticrollercoaster, TommyTwistsTommyTurns, Gordon_J & Kinogh picking up the reigns latterly.
If you have not seen the film posted by Kinogh earlier this morning click the link below.

Well done to everyone who made the race night such a success. I wasn't able to go due to working but after reading some comments from those in attendance, it's easy to see why a good night would have been had by all.
Sadly the Celtic Ladies lost out to Glasgow City 2-1 in the race for the title. i think they could still win it if City lose their last 2 games & we win our last match but whatever happens, i'm sure we're all proud of the effort they've given & they'll win it next year.

You want crosses fired in to one man up-front, and that man not a goalscorer? Apologies if I'm missing something... I really think the time has come for us to play without wingers. We have to afford our hesitant centre-backs more protection, which means a sitting midfielder. Fox and Hinkel provide enough chances from their crosses, rendering our wingers redundant. Keep the pitch narrow and squashed, and allow McGeady (or McCourt) to run riot.

McGeady (McCourt) playing behind:
Samaras McDonald (Fortune)
No place for Zhi in my team, as the only place I can find for him is the one I've allocated for McGeady/McCourt. I'd want McDonald and Samaras, as they are effective together, but TM will select Fortune. Change this to 442 and play wingers for the last 20, with McGinn on too.
See all this stuff about a mythical one man up front, it's not. Depending how you line up it becomes 3 up top or two up top when you attack and in posession.
In my case my 4 4 1 1 when we attack, would end up a 4 4 2 with Zheng being the second guy joining Fortune up front. We aren't getting enough crosses, we are depending too much on our full backs. At least with McGinn and Fox in the midfield and out wide we would get the ball in the box more for the attackers and midfielders to get on the end of.
Making the game narrow will screw us especially if we come up against Levein's 5 man midfield. You need to get width and get in behind.
Bloke
Best football post for ages
We've already seen McGeady crossing straight to McCourt, and vice versa
completely missing the non scoring strikers, - farcical
My only worry about you side are Robson's tired legs, but suppose Zi would solve that.
If it's wingers you want, it's one from three of McGeady McCourt or McGinn

the camp nou was something else, hard to imagine many others of his and Marshall's age have performed as well in such an arena at that level. i can remember coming out of the dark of the Celtic Club in Melbourne that Friday morning to go to work, leaving behind a couple of hundred inside and the sound of the Celtic song ringing out into the morning, people making their way to their offices wondering what the hell was going on inside!
plus David Marshall went to the primary school my mum was headteacher of in Riddrie, always happy to come back and speak to the kids, shy if anything. a couple of world class saves that night if I recall, and backed them up with a couple more against that lot the following weekend. I can still recall one of john's great challenges at the edge of the box that night.
a tragedy for big John, but he seems to have a mature head on young shoulders, which should stand him in good stead. all the best for the future young man.
hh
451 can be made to be just that by the opposition. If you see Rangers' 451 for example, it is built to stultify the nullify, and is therefore perceived as negative. If you are going to play with one up, one supporting, you need a more intelligent defence which will not hoof high balls up. Zhi does not strike me as a decent goalscorer, so playing him with Fortune doesn't seem a goal-threat.
We have to make the game narrow exactly to counter the 3-man centre mid of an opposition, and you get in behind using Samaras' pace. If you play what is really 442, you leave us 2 v their 3 in the centre, precisely how Falkirk pressured us and out-tacticed us. DU have better midfielders than Falkirk, and if we go the same way, our midfield will be crowded, the pressure gets put on our centre-backs, who are then dragged left, right and centre. Tannadice is too tight a park to play with wingers with chalk on the soles of their boots. 433, 41213, whichever, the key is a passionate, quick tempo start, and a fluid enough formation. Our rigidity is strangling us.
Bloke109,
You could play meGeady of Fortune instead of Zheng in my lineup and that probably could be the option you are looking for. fREE ROLE TO attack and run riot.
bourne: cheers mate, Zhi for Robson it is.
WGS: fair compromise, would be just a bit worried that Fortune is the man up top - make it Samaras and you have a deal. He has his deractors, sure, but one thing, he never hides. He stuck at it at Falkirk, even thought things weren't going his way. He'd give you more movement, height for both ends of the park, and more of a sniff of a goal.
Bloke109,
Depend which two you have in the centre though. If you got two midfielders that can play and dominate it wouldn't matter.
However, you got 3 in the middle and not 2 if the one playing off the main striker drops back when we aren't in possession.
Samaras lost his pace mate a long time ago. Fortune is faster than him.
I like Zheng, he looks evertime he is on the ball that he can create something. Reminds me a wee bit when Lubo first arrived. He is just settling in and getting to know people. I reckon in a few weeks he will be a regular for us.
I think Samaras, like many players, let alone some of our's, is a confidence player. We were all rotten first half last time, but it was much of Samaras that brought us up in the second. Fortune, albeit back from injury, contributed south of not much.
Good article Paul,
This is tragic news and it is all the more acute because of the deficiencies in our team at the moment.
This encapsulates being a Celtic fan, we have to say farewell to the game to exactly what we need right now. Make no mistake John Kennedy was well on his way to being a GIANT of the game of football.
I have felt gutted every time the Big Man broke down, or had another setback in his recovery, fearing it would be the end of the road. Now that time has come and this really does feel like the Rock Bottom with all the things that have been happening this season.
But being a Celtic fan means there are brighter days around the corner. Celtic can not afford to lose men of the quality of John Kennedy, and although we've had his playing career tragically cut short, it is obvious to everyone that this man still has so much to offer Celtic. His determination to succeed almost brought him back from the impossible, if this doesn't inspire the current Celtic players to get their proverbial ar--s in gear I do not know what will.
I hope Henryk, Big Sutty, Naka and all our recent stars will make his benefit game. These are times you question why God can take away such a talent but I believe that John Kennedy has a more important role in his life now, whether that is with Celtic, football or elsewhere. The man is an inspiration to me anyway and he will be successful at whatever he decides to do IMHO.
It was short and sweet John but THANKS for some AWESOME memories in the Hoops.
Sad news indeed about John Kennedy. I was present that night in the Camp Nou when he was an absolute tower at the back for Celtic and it is so sad we will never know how good he would have been. It does show up however how fragile a players career can be. I think we are sometimes a bit harsh on modern footballers for squeezing too much money out of the game but when you see how their primary income source can be gone in a split second due to a horrendous tackle I really cant blame them.
Hopefully John will have a successful future no matter what road he takes and I trust Celtic will look after him in the manner he deserves.
just caught up with wgs team for tannadice..
skippy must play..biggest problem going forward is the fact that the mf cant score many goals..aiden off the front may be worth a shout but doubt it will happen..
zz jurys out..
been watching the usual suspects slagging aiden off recently..jeez get a grip..he goes we might as well shut the doors on the way out..only player with any real flair in that first team..too many on here want to assest strip the team THG,AMCG,SB,SMcD for the door etc..
A big problem for me is the lack of bodies in the box when we swing crosses in. Most games Skippy is the only Celtic player against 4 or 5 defenders, meaning the cross has to be perfect. Nobody from midfield seems to burst a gut to get there and Sammi usually drops deep to help in the build up. I don’t mean midfielders wont score (usually solo efforts), but they never seem to get ahead of the ball.
I would suggest we re-invert the pyramid and play a 2-3-5 but unfortunately, we don't have 5 attackers...
csial..and we dont have 2 defenders...
WGS
like you i think ZZ has the same look as Lubo when he 1st arrived.always has the ball under control and able to look for a man and have time on the ball too.not saying for a minute he is in Lubos class.remember the 1st time I saw Lubo was against Dundee at Parkhead.Took 6 off them that day and the stadium was jumping as Joke Brown had been sacked that day.
awatr,
Boruc in nets and a back two of Zaluska and Cervi. Just need to find 5 attackers now and we're good to go.

Couldn't agree more regarding McGeady - we are making a good player look bad, as for the Celtic Support they just don't deserve him, going by some of the garbage that gets published on here.
He's hog tied to the wide area double teamed by two SPL hammer throwers left or right every week, a better bet would be don't give him a game on either wing but play him behind a front two, I don't know why it has been tried. Then you would see his true worth, teams wouldn't know what to do with him.
As for the fans that mention him in the same breath as Shaun Maloney - i despair.
HH
bourne..thanks for that thought I was alone on that..one regular poster on here shamefully described aiden as a the 21st century peter grant..wont name him to shame his embaressment..he knows who he is..but wants to take a long look/get a grip of himself delete as applicable..
he needs help..he cant keep carrying the fight every week..lets face it too many others hide too often..as for SM..theres a player there no doubt..he just wants to believe it but hes not in the same class though he could be if he had a bit more self belief..
In the next home game we should give Josh Thompson a go in central defence alongside Loovens, cant see TM going for it though.
TM appears to be suffering from McManus Captainitus, 'he is captain so should play' GS suffered from this and TM is showing signs he could also.

Theres more than one way to lose the dressing room, pitching in Josh is just the same as criticising the central defenders.
Tony said he didn't see the lad ready for 18 months or so. We are going to have to go with what we got at the moment.
I really hope all the guys who have been giving less than 100% commitment or who just can't cut it do the decent thing and move on, as their self centred attitudes IMHO have us in a low state, when there is no real need to be like this.
I am raging still about that Thugs tackle but all of that current Celtic squad are probably wealthier than John Kennedy, I don't profess to know JK's mindset but I reckon he would have been like Paul McStay and wanted to play for Celtic all his life. The links in the families make it so strong.
Chris sutton is a legend
I read a Leeds supporters view of the season ahead in the summer, when asked about players he said Beckford was a talent but also frustrated the hell out of the support. If I remember right it was his atitude. Sounds much like someone we already have.
Id still take him, even if he is just as good as we have it would do us good to replace some of the current first teamers.
Awalkacrosstherooftops
Good news, with him being out of contract in the summer I wouldnt expect them to get more than 500k but it is Newcastle we are talking about, not the most sensible of clubs.

TM has already publicly critisized players, playing JT wouldnt be the worst things thats been done to them this season.

Yes m8 he has but he also stopped being specifically critical of players.
These players held a meeting? Because the manager criticised them?
John Kennedy?
I hope they WAKE UP and are not selfish. Lennoxtown sounds awesome for the players but just as there is a big disconnect between the Board and Fans, theres becoming a big disconnect between the Fans and the Players.
Gordon Strachan is a magnificent manager, he gets the very best out of low level players.
We are in a transitory period where we are gambling on Tony delivering on both trophies and silky football with what seems like a lesser financial outlay. He deserves time to overturn the whole squad at least in my little opinion.

It was a cracking match that had everything, skill, pace, determination and guile. I missed the first half hour but what I did see told me that women's soccer continues to improve and is becoming much more professional.
Glasgow City are a well run club and have been going for a number of years now and have a number of splendid players that I have watched on and off over ten years.
However Celtic can be pleased with the progress they have made since they started up and having two good teams competing is a vast improvement on the early days when one team tended to win everything rather easily.

I know you like a flutter and IMHO it might be better for you and your determined CQN coupon Bhoys to go for a new style of betting.
Basically it is over 2.5 goals or under 2.5 goals / or 1.5 to get a few wins under the WHOLE TEAMS belt.
There are leagues that are full of goals and others that have a dearth of goals.
The clincher for me is there are only 2 possible outcomes......
As the KoJo would say
makes sense to me.
The downside, this is an online bet as far as I can ascertain, not been in a bookies for years though.
Anyway let me know, and I will join in your team.
8 picks, 2 over 2.5s and 6 over 1.5s on the English leagues should return 12/1 ish. These are well attainable, then once theres a couple of wins we can go deeper into the 2.5s. Thats just the English leagues.
I fear your fine fighting men will keep hitting the bar with the method your currently employing.
This bet really opens up the scope

Good shout, thanks, 4/7 this week but the two weeks we have had a freakish draw to bust it makes me think we might still have a chance. Im a big fan of people picking teams that are around 2/5 or less, would still be a good return for eight teams.
Ive learned over the years that anything more than five teams is a bit crazy, I usually go for a couple of trebles at weekends. An eight team selection feels wrong but got to keep going for it each week.
The Glorious Goals thing could be another option, other posters have had success with it but I keep forgetting to have a look at it so no knowlege of it.
The number of goals thing has let me down before and any time I fancy a high scoring game it turns out to be a cert that its 0-0, infact any time I bet my favourite 3-1 its always a low scoring game.

Celtic Football Club (the board) comes in for a lot of criticism on CQN, but I think it is tremendous the way the club has supported John Kennedy through this difficult time. He has been given the best of medical treatment and the club has stood by him in his fight against such a terrible injury. It would have been an easy way out to get him off the wage bill, but that was obviously never an option.
Good luck JK and here's hoping you still have something to offer the game in another capacity.

I'll try to put up an 8 team combo next weekend in this format. The games will be set for 16:00 CET :P
The plan would be to have a pick from all leagues around the world kicking off at any times to ensure we all get the best value. I don't mind taking on a tough lique for goals as it is studying the bad team as well as the good teams form that can make money in this bet.
My son goes in for an operation Friday morning, assuming his pre- operation thing goes well on Tuesday (he has an annoying cough which may mean its delayed) then I may not be about at all as I'm coming off a nightshift and they are saying he will be in there for 8 hours at least.

I've been away all weekend and now just catching up.
You make an excellent point about the possibility of Celtic taking over the franchise of a lower level English club, as and when one becomes available, by dint of financial collapse. You then again criticise Celtic for seemingly not pursuing such an option.
"I ask AGAIN, for the THIRD TIME, when is Celtic going to tell us that they have a plan to do this, something viable, something which isn't dependant on factors X Y and Z which are out of our control?"
Forgive me, but before Celtic or any other club can go down that road, surely they need to wait for a club to go under. Or are you really advocating that Celtic go public, in advance, and reassure the fans - and the rest of the footballing world - that they are indeed waiting in the wings, primed to pounce on the first English club that falls by the wayside? I can see many pitfalls in such an announcement, not least of which is that we will be seen as cruel predators. Leeches and bloodsuckers. Surely the only way to successfully complete such a takeover is to do it quickly and with the benefit of surprise. If we tell the world what we have in mind to do, I fear it will be doomed to failure.
I am not on here claiming that the board does have such a plan, but if they have, I don't want to know about it, until it is reported in the media that the club has taken the franchise of an English club.
There was a very good reason why the Allies kept the invasion of Europe a secret from the Nazis.

I'm looking forward to the resumption of proper football on Saturday and especially Sunday.
It's been a habit for some years now that, when The Hoops are away, my wife and I watch a Sky-Plussed Celtic game at 3.o'clock on a Saturday afternoon.
This season we've been reduced to digging out old DVDs.
Even the games we've won have not been of the style you'd want to watch again.
I'm hoping and praying that this Sunday'll see the dawning of a new era.
And yes, I am aware that we're still top of the league.
Good morning CQN’ers,

Hadn't considered of course that when they changed my sky box, I lost all of my recorded games which were stored on my old sky plus box. Well done to all involved with raising a truly amazing sum of money for Martin [Kano]. In the beginning the spark was kindled by the likes of Pablophanque,McgraininSpain and Kitalba and through their indefatigable efforts the torch was passed to fine ghentlemen such as MoonbeamsWetDreams,GordonJ and TommyTwistsTommyTurns who have carried the beacon to all four corners of the Timiverse.
[Apologies if I have inadvertently missed anyone out, but you should all be very, very proud.]
2009 has been pretty forgettable on the pitch for Celtic so far but off the pitch once again the support have shown they are world class.
You'll never walk alone- more than a song.
Party on down
No one expects the Spanish inquisition,
our main weapon is surprise,
just like Monty Python,
right between the eyes.
Get them when they're not looking,
sneak up behind their back,
just as they're about to go under,
that's when we attack.
Get into the English league at all costs,
desert our Scottish roots,
move down to better weather,
so good you don't need boots.
Must get into Nirvana,
sneaky, without making a sound,
line up in single file,
conga, to our new ground.

Inspired by all the talk of us moving to Engurland and in particular Gold Coast Tom's post at 6:24 AM. When I read this line: "Surely the only way to successfully complete such a takeover is to do it quickly and with the benefit of surprise."
DBBIA, Well said.

Ps was due to be involved in an audit all day but the Lloyds auditor has cried off due to swine flu. I hope he's ok, but it feels like a Carlsberg Monday.

from the pics, some good footballers in that line up, DC could pick up the position from his big bro in the 1980 cup final.
Morning Bhoys and Ghirls,
I haven't posted in ages, but lurk everyday.
Marc from the Bring Martin Home committee contacted me a few months ago through Ebay to see if I would donate one of my canvas prints to be sold at auction to raise some much needed money. Which I was delighted to be in a position to be able to do.
To hear this morning that the Neil Lennon canvas print raised £530 has absolutely astonished me and made my day.
In these days of doom and gloom it is very heart warming to be part of the Celtic family. The whole Bring Martin Home committee deserve one hell of a pat on the back.
Hail! Hail!
DBBIA

TuckerBhoy,
The print is stunning; everyone was talking about it.
It went for twice as much as an Artur Boruc signed top and three times as much as a John Hartson signed top!
Many thanks for donating it to us.
