Kano on Tommy Burns Thursday

| | Comments (592)
A few hundred of us will gather at Celtic Park tonight to enjoy a Race-night and raise money for a friend in need, Martin Kane, Kano to you and me.  Below the previous article, our other friend, 001, republished Kano's thoughts from May 2008, as news of Tommy Burns passing reached us.

Well worth reminding ourselves what it's all about.

By kano on May 15, 2008 6:52 PM

"Oh, how sweet this league would be!!!
I have seen a phenomenon happening twice before with Celtic fans.
John Doyle and Jinky.

Where his name is chanted, repeatedly, at a most significant time for us all.
Not because of their skills, not because of their looks or their badge kissing, or their pledges of undying loyalty.
Because they were one of us.

But, more so, because they were one of us, who became one of them.
One of them who done what we all dreamed of doing.
And we all know what that means.

I hope and pray (to coin a phrase) that his name is chanted next Thursday, in a joyous time for us all.
It is what he would have wanted.
I believe that wholeheartedly.

Let us hear it for a true Celtic gent.
You people who go there next Thursday, are the only people who can be heard.
I implore you all to make it a noise to remember.
The man deserves nothing less.
And nor does his family."

Keep telling it, Kano.

Enjoy yourself tonight if you are going; see you there.

Raymac...choose again pls mate...or..if I dont hear from you...choose one tomorrow if youn wish...

I Hope everyone going tonight has a great time
And that the night is a fine end to an amazing campaign

im sorry all - this has nothing to do with this thread but i feel it needs said again (it was on the last thread)

the BOLD way foward for SCOTTISH fitba -

seeing as the teams in the bottom half of the Spl are of simaler standard to most teams in the 1st division, i would take the top 6 from div1 and add them to the Spl. making an 18 team top tier.

celtic
hibs
aberdeen
killie
d.united
st mirren
morton
st johnstone
livingston
p.thistle
falkirk
hearts
dundee
motherwell
ayr united
raith rovers
inverness c.t.
huns

we would then play each other twice, once hame and once away taking us to 34 games a season.
with europe, scottish and league cup games (and internationals) this number is ideal. playing a team 4 times a season is boring and repetative, no1 in scotland wants to see a fixture 4 times a season any more.
imagine the thrill of getting the huns in a cup game once again, or better yet, in a final, that would bring back some of the excitement i think.
the scottish cup format should stay the same, but as far as the league cup is concerned - i would love to see it turn into a four nations type thing, with the SFA, FAI, EFA, and welsh FA all agreeing to take part in it.
i think that is a great wee idea because at the moment no1 is that interested in the laegue cup, this is 1 way that would spice up the competition.

as for the rest of the teams in scotland, there would now be 24 teams left remaining in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions.
this would be solved by having two 12 team divisions (a first & second division after the Spl)

so to clarify, an 18 team premier league, and two 12 team divisions below, this way all 42 teams keep their professional status and no1 suffers.

this is just an idea people, so if i have missed anything or there is a flaw in my idea, please point it out.

i would really love to see this idea take off as i think it is THE bold way foward for fitba in my country. . .

hail hail!

Best of luck to all at the race night tonight

Fancy Ireland to beat the French but would settle for Nil All.
Anyone interested in clairvoyants.Well I am not but there is an Irish guy called Keith Barry ( i think) he is on Irish TV a bit.
He has predicted a 2-1 win for Ireland with Robbie Keane scoring first.
Paddy Powers only going 25/1 on this which seems skimpy odds for such a sequence of events.
I dont fancy that result but sure any of you superstitious types out there might.

On a more scientific note (thats a joke btw) one horse interests me tonight at Wolves 7.20.Belle Noveree ridden by Danny Mullins ( a good young apprentice jockey who travels over from Ireland for his only ride of the day/night) I hope its worth it me lad.about 10/1 so each way.
Have just been told by someone close to connections that Tranquil Sea is well fancied for the big race in Cheltenham (about 7/1) but this is a tough race so tread carefully mes amis

001, well done.

i hope you all have a good time 2ngt

p.s. good luck to eire

A timely piece Paul, for me a reminder that I miss Kano's contributions round these parts. For he too, is a 'true Celtic gent'.

Well done to every last one of us who've contributed in any way to help Martin, Carolyn and their children. We should be proud of our community.

.......think when they realised that the fans would be paying £45m over 3 years for bridging a £30m debt, the 'Laptop Loyal' decided not to 'promote' the scenario from an 'anonymous'....

....As reported, wonder if SDM "wouldn't be hard to deal with" on the £50m also required to purchase his shares ??...

.....then there's the good few million needed to buy about 8 players....

Just wait and see.....Nothing is going to happen until they are hours away from administration, or in administration, when desperation will allow some businessman to get a 'bargain' .....and they will need to be VERY careful to ensure this 'saviour' isn't only interesting in building flats etc on the Ipox site....(or va Casino...He He..!!!)

I don't normally cut and paste from previous blogs, but this time it seems appropriate:

Well, the day has finally arrived.

Tonight in the hallowed halls of Celtic Park, the place where the greats have entertained and our legends have walked, the focus will be one one man: our friend Martin.

Yes folks, tonight is the night that we will reach our target of raising £50,000 towards Bringing Martin Home.

You all know the story by now. A Celtic man needed help and so the Celtic family worldwide came together to provide asisstance. It's what our great club is all about; it's what we do.

We are very close to our goal. Work is now underway on the Kane family home and it is looking very likely that Martin will indeed be home before Santa arrives.

There have been raffles and badges, runners and cyclists, slimmers and quizzers, leafleters and bucketeers. And money has poured in from all over the world. Every event has exceeded the target set. The total has continued to rise, week afeter week.

I look forward to seeing many of you in the Kerrydale Suite this evening, not only to watch races, to buy raffle tickets or to win prizes. But also to think of Martin and to reflect on the part that each and every one of you has played in the campaign.

It promises to be a very memorable night.

Well done to the Kano committee.

If this fine site is remembered for nothing else it will live long in the minds of Martin's family. They must be gobsmacked at what has been achieved.

Good luck tonight. Looking forward to hearing the target has been met and that Kano will indeed be released from his hospita cell and returned to the bosom of his family before Christmas.

Everyone who has played a part in this is a credit to CQN, to Celtic and to yourselves. Take a bow.

SwanseaBhoy

I can't make it tonight sadly, but I hope those of you who do enjoy yourselves and that we raise enough money to help Kano get home. This campaign has been hugely successful so far, and it's very humbling to see what Celtic fans will do to help one of their own.

TnT/Chris 1888 ,

My nap for today is Hold Em in the 2.35 (Paddy Power Chase) at Cheltenham. More of an each way shot really but when you occupy joint bottom place in the table ...................

Incidentally our horse Dream Alliance is an intended runner at The Hennessy on 28th November. Handicapper has dropped him down to a mark of 142 (the same mark he ran off when second to Denman in the race in 2007) which means we need about 25 runners to drop out before we get in the race. It's quite possible. What I will say though is that the horse is going great at home and barring any last minute hiccups will race unless balloted out.

Danny Fox starts for Scotland.

Good, I think. Builds up experience.

Please dont get injured.

For anyone else that's remotely interested there's a strong Celtic connection to the Scotland defence today. Marshall's in goals and 3 of the back 4 are Heid, Mick and Danny Fox, assisted by that £6 million right back Alan Hutton.

Don't imagine the blog will go into meltdown during or after this game but I'll be watching and cheering anyway!

I like Hello Bud 1:55 Cheltenham

I can't feel pleased about another Celtic player getting picked for a Scotland cap in a meaningless game.

Thinking about John Kennedy's career being ruined by including him in a Scotland team when he was hardly established in our side was, in my opinion, just another cynical attempt by the SFA to put a few thousand on the gate, and the continued playing of Celtic players when they are unfit just makes me think of the damage international football does to our prospects and the wellbeing of our players.

I would be far happier if Danny Fox opted for England and was never chosen.

ggh

sTICks -

I think over the last couple of days following the release of Rangers' accounts there seemed to be a suggestion from those who are able to analyse these figures that the Hutton transfer, although reported at that level, couldn't have been as high? Or perhaps this was to do with a different player. Anyway, even £6 million's a bit high for me!

Are you sure it wasnt 9 million£ for hutton ?
Whatever ,it was a mystifyingly high amount of money anyway for a player that had basic flaws in his game.
I believe he is now languishing in the tottenham reserves. surprise surprise.

First time poster - been lurking for a long time but decided to sign up. Looking forward to tonight, it's nights like tonight that makes you proud to be part of this family.

I used to enjoy reading Kano's posts, you could feel the frustration in some of them when things were not going our way on the park. When the team were playing well he made us realise how lucky we were to be at the game enjoying being part of a winning team.

Hope the target is smashed tonight.

Congratulations to New Zealand in qualifying for next years World Cup Finals, beating Bahrain 1-0 in Wellington before a record crowd, for football, of over 35,000. That is both the Kangaroos and the Kiwis both in the finals, that has got to be a first surely.

Scotland team

Marshall, Hutton, Caldwell, McManus, Fox, Cowie, Fletcher, Dorrans, Naismith, Miller, McFadden

Mon the back three. Caldwell and McManus look like being Scotlands best chance for a goal.

Whatever happened to the rule that there should be no live football at 3pm when theres league games on? Full set of SFL fixtures on at the same time as Scotland game.

surely an agreement of some sort could be reached after a lot of compromise. after the rest of the spl ignoring celtic aberdeen and rangers over the sky/setanta tv deal they are in no position to say they have scottish football's best interests at heart, although maybe the same could be said of celtic if they actually wanted to leave scottish fitba and join the english.

but as it stands we will be remaining in scotland (thankfully, i like the term scottish champions, Celtic - 'champions of england', or 'english champions' sounds a bit funny to me)so the way i proposed earlier seems the most simple, logical & practical way foward, we need to make scottish football more attractive again, which will take a while, so why not start now.

It's just the kinda goal Celtic concede. Cross comes in from the wing unopposed, nobody attacks it as it falls on the penalty spot, goalkeeper exposed.

How Kenny Miller has made a living in the game has baffled me.

WGS

Fox is not very impressive either. He has not cut out one cross or stopped any attacks down the Welsh right. His passing has also been poor.

WGS

Absolutely. Although this rarely happened with Lennon protecting. Celtic do not play with a deep-lying holding midfielder these days, someone who will follow the lone striker to allow our centre-backs to be closer. It's the same thing with Scotland. The centre-backs are being pulled all over the place, far away from each other, with no centre-mid to protect. Miller, on the other hand, playing for Scotland, does not have the intelligence to pull a centre-back out of position, and instead plays on the shoulder of a full-back. Useful when running the channels, but hopeless when trying to bring others in.

WGS, I don't see Fox stepping up to midfield. He's got a cracking left foot like Thommo but I've never once seen him go past a man. Doesn't seem to have any dribbling ability or speed. No idea about his shooting ability either.

Hope I'm wrong though.

Gordon Smith must go.

I blame George Peat.

WGS - good point re Fox

To be fair the Scotland midfield is non-existent
obviously missing Brownie and unbookable

If anyone needs more evidence that Celtic's problems in defence this season are entirely down to those 2 clowns at centre half, look no further than the shambles currently going on in Cardiff...

This is the same as the Norway game. A good start after ten minutes Jenny Miller misses a sitter and then we implode.

His non existant confidence will reach a new low.

Burley will be for the chop in time for walter to jump ship methinks.

BrixtonCelt: Loovens at Ibrox.

CelticBob: Heid is playing, but you can't blame Nails for this - he's English and therefore not eligible.

I dare say Caldwell/McManus performance is down to Tony Mowbray, maybe some on here will start to give the big man a break, silk purse from pigs ears and all that.

John Kennedy with one good leg would be better than those pair

For any true patriots out there Scotland are now 90/1 to win...

The Token Tim

Im very confident of that Brazil and Spain double 11/10 and 10/11 now.

England Team - Foster Brown Upson Lescott Bridge SWP Jenas Barry Milner Rooney Bent.

EN

Fox confidence looks shot since he became back from injury.

Fox has a cracking good foot? not seen yet, rarely gets a free kick on target, 20 of the richest teams in the world all have passed up on Fox, we jump in with 1.5 million for a very average championship player, Lee Naylor back for me with all his faults.

BrixtonCelt

Don't like the "clowns" tag but aside from that - yes they are poor.

Now having said that 1st goal - Naismith let his man away good cross superbly put away.

2nd goal.. Right back at fault and again an excellent cross very difficult to defend.

3rd Goal - Darren "the new Tostao" Fletcher give the ball away totally exposing his - admitedly - porous defence. Mc Manus skinned, Fletcher tries to rugby tackle the guy - FAILS!!.

THe midfield in front of that defence are shocking and as someone said earlier - Missing Scott Brown.

As we do.

So there y'are!!

Keep her lit.

53

I couldnt wait to see a decent left back at the club ,But lets be honest Fox is a very average player .

WGS,

"He would look up and bang it in to Sutty or Henrik."

Therein lieth the crux.

We will never know how good a killer cross that Fox may have as he has no-one to aim at or hope will go and attack and win a ball thrown into a dangerous area!

HAIL! HAIL!
Token

guys can you help me with this.

Was Darren Fletcher ever at Celtic in his younger days?

I didnt think he was but my mate is adamant that he was and we let him go.

Great management - the worst defence in the league (or the one with the least form) is picked in full. Where is Berra? A guy getting rave reviews in England. OUr problems are the same as Scotland's and make no mistake the press will get into our players as well as Burley.

Listen to the boos. That says it all.

The third goal was the worst.
Honestly.

Burley is a fool. Now Aaron Ramsey is the best player in the world cos he got a lucky break. What a joke.

If Burley survives this how many will turn up to watch the games for the next qualifiers.

a hate tae think what the score would be if Bellamy was fit.

Bloke_109
No,Brixton Celt has hit the Nail on the head, those two are the root of our problems IMO.Im watching it they are being dragged all over the place. We will never win anything with those two in CD they are a disaster.
Bob.

Bloke 109

I think Loovens performance at Ibrox was a bit of a blip. Overall I feel he has proved to be much more consistent than both Mick and Caldwell. Don't get me wrong I still don't think Loovens is the long term answer, but Caldwell and Mick are of a more immediate concern.

i had a lot of time for mcmanus and i think at times he is criticised too much while others get off scot free, but his form since returning from injury is summed up by his display today. Both he and big heid should be shown the door at celtic as asap.

Caldweel/McManus have lost 6 goals against Falkirk and Wales in 90 mins, what chance has any manager got?

Comedy Gold

Thank god i dont give a toss about that lot.

Are Scotland shooting with the wind in the second half?

Love

Viewfaeawindae,

Well said. This has been a major problem for years bow and nothing got done. GS rated them and wouldn't change them no matter what.

Burley seems to have bought into this mythical praise for the two of them. TM never and was honest about it and made it public. Many fans agree with him and he has said what many of us think yet because he dared to say so in the public domain, he's been crucified.

I would rather it be highlighted rather being told how great they are, wouldn't you.

OUr best central defence is (unfortunately) Caldwell and Loovens and that says nothing. I see Kenny Miller is useless now playing against defender who can defend.

rdk7

I don't think so, he's been at Manure in some form since he was sixteen.

rdk7

Fletcher was celtic boys club but fergie sat in his living room until he signed.

Hail Hail

CelticBob: I was being facetious, and apologise. Not disagreeing, but an effective midfield would help, for Celtic of course, but also for Scotland.

BrixtonCelt: Pretty much a blip yes, but given the choice, yes, two brand new centre-backs for me.

Strand67,

His form since injury??? He's been like that for years.

KrakowBhoy 3.49

Celtic dont have 'the worst defence in the league' but there is four teams who have conceeded less so far this season.

Morocco 0 Cameroon 1 Webo, 27 minutes played.

Landry or Joel (as fifa call him) N'Gumeo on from the start.

Cameroon sounds almost Scottish, Cameron for the World Cup.

The old saying of "defend as a team ....attack as a team" Scotland are doing neither
The back 4 are poor but they have no cover from the Midfield and the attack cant hold the ball up

i blame catholic schools!!

Aaron Ramsey is running the show, he got a good Scottish sounding name couldn't the SFA checked out if he had a wee Granny from Dunoon or someplace before he was picked for the Welsh.

WGS
as i said i think in the past he has been singled out as a scapegoat while others such as Caldwell and O Dea get away with it. I think its no co-incidence his better days were when he had lennon giving some cover to him. But both him and the inflated ego of caldwell have to go

The Scotland support have retired to the bars under the stand for pints, very unlikely they will return for the second half.

Miller and Naismith have been shocking.

Any idea if Jason Marr is playing?

Strand67,

Caldwell i'll give you, O'Dea though??? Has he played 5 games in a row for Celtic with McManus? You'd be lucky if he has played even 3 games in a row with any centre half. He hasn't had run in the team.

Scapegoat, my foot. If he was a scapegoat he'd be jettonised by know. Not just him though. I agree there are few others that should be punted as well.

Reason Ramsay playing well is because of Wenger. He's Fabregas replacement. Down to Wenger.

WGS

We will have to agree to disagree about McManus, but O Dea i have never rated in his limited appearances at celtic and he is not making any headlines on the bench at Reading. As for the players who are not good enough at celtic, its a long list and who would buy them.

This stage is now set for The Return of Walter!

Was always gonna be so, and for Burley it's game over.

But, who'll be boss at ibrox?

Kojo _ I agree, spending the majority of his transfer budget on Fortune was a joke . We just have to wait and see what he does in the January window. Although I'm not that optimistic the board will release much funds.

Great. That's all we need - Barry Robson to get injured.

Narrowbhoat

Ramsey was bought from Cardiff. 5mill if my memory serves me.

Barry Robson on for Dorrans.

Watch the media give it to Burley after this embarrassment and contrast it with Smith and Unirea

strand67

I think that as long as a player is out of the first team at Celtic - the better he becomes. That goes for Darren, Barry Robson and a few others.

The truth is that - IMHO - we have an exceedingly poor pool of players. I can't think of one I'd regret leaving if a suitable offer came along.

What really worries me is that although Rangers are also poor I think they are more capable of putting a winning run together - or rather a points accumulating run - than we are. If they stay injury free - relatively - I'd make them clear favourites for the league.

Sorry to be so pessimistic.

Keep her lit.

Did the Kilt get ye any women last night?

Take back what I said about Fox. Forgot he had a good game (if that can be said) for us v Falkirk (comparatively, before anyone hurls a cyber tomato at me).

By the looks of things on the BBC text, he hasn't done that badly today.

Kojo is wrong about Fox. He is average, as opposed to awful (sorry, Lee).

Tartan army singing anti-royal rebel song !!!

Kojo

I think your assessment of both Fox and Fortune may be a little premature.

Fortune has hardly kicked a ball for us, and while he hasn't overly impressed in the games he has played, I have seen enough to think that he deserves more time to establish himself.

Fox, admittedly has not showed any kind of blinding form, However, he has been fairly steady. And a vast improvement on Naylor in terms of crossing ability. Anyway, I was never really one to criticise Naylor, anyone playing alongside big Mick is bound to be left exposed at times...

Kojo- Robbie Keane please :) lol

your right 100 percent, with this squad of players i wouldnt trust them to cross the road, never mind to win the league. Walter Smith has his teams organised at a domestic level and i fear for the rest of the season, Hail Hail

Can't believe Fox is being criticised ....there was absolutely no midfield in the first half.....and the defence was left isolated...even Hutten couldn't get forward, as he normally does....this Scotland team are shoite, and I won't have Fox being criticised in this situation.....!!!!!! (hopefully, he won't have to play for them again.......

If the Scottish 'scene' gets any worse, we should join the Irish league....

Tartan Army: Sack the board

Re the comments about Fox and Fortune - I think Danny is an improvement on Naylor, and think he will be a big player for us. The reason I think he is better is how comfortable he is on the ball, and his passing.

As for Fortune - hmmmmm.......... I never like to criticise a Celtic player, and certainly not when they`ve only just got in the door, but all I`ll say is he needs to improve - a lot! - to show he`s good enough.

Pal.. I vehemently disagree with you, when you say that Mr. Fox is a Comfortable Passer of the Ball.

On the Contrary, I say that Mr. Fox is a very ..POOR PASSER.. of the Ba'

And Ah further say..

The Mr. Naylor is a Far Bettah .. TACKLER.. than Mr. Fox.

Sure, Mr. Naylor's Distribution of the Football, is Atrocious, at Times..

But..

I say that Mr. Fox, on occasion, is also apt to Fire over a Wild Cross, at times.

In fact, I go as far to say that Mr.Fox, cannot be considered in any way as a Guid Free Kick..well.. Kicker, either.

Adding it awe up..

Ah stick tae whit My Opinion is, as stated..

"Mr.Fox, is no Improvement on Mr. Naylor, at Left Back."

As we were saying before the game about that threesome irony indeed. Three goals conceded against a Falkirk side that previously couldn't buy a goal. Not that I care, but George Burley is even thicker than he looks.

Any average side can rip holes in Caldwell and McManus, and now Fox begins to show serious deficiency in defence, needless to say this result reflects badly on the Celtic defence. If January comes and goes without drastic change to the spine of the Celtic side, TM will fallen at the first hurdle.

Not one, but two new centre backs required.

I think it might restore some of the sense of occasion to 'wee' team vs. glasgow giant fixtures, e.g.

I guess there are so many people involved in the good works that are being carried out round the globe, in the name of Celtic for Kano's benefit that it would be churlish to highlight individuals, so all of you who have actively contributed through fundraising cycle rides, barefoot runs etc, etc, etc, I salute you. You ALL do us proud!

Your positive good natured, upbeat "can-do" response to Kano's plight should be a lesson to everyone.

Bournesouprecipe

Just out of curiosity I checked backed the line-up when Celtic defeated AC Milan 2-1 just two years back.

Boruc
Naylor Caldwell Hartley Doumbe
McGeady Hartley Donati Jarosik
Brown
McDonald
One of Gordon Strachan's greatest line-ups. Look at that midfield, both Donati and Jarosik brought height and good heading ability, and Aiden and Paul both put in maximum effort. Brown was there too, just in front of the midfield and putting in a box to box effort. He was fit then. McManus and Caldwell had good performances all round them, Mick scored one and Gary made the other. They were not bad players then, but sadly they are no longer playing at that same level. Incidentally have a look at AC Milan.

Dida
Oddo Nesta Bonera Jankulovski
Ambrosine Gattuso Pirlo Seedorf
Kaka Inzaghi

Celtic Mac,

Hartley must have played a blinder that night, both in defence and midfield.

Celtic Mac

Thanks, for that insight I've forgotten what a Celtic midfield should really look like, and I said on here last week what we are seeing at the moment in midfield is the main reason for all, and I mean all of the Celtic strife. Warts and all, Jarsosik could shoot from midfield another long lost forgotten art at Celtic.

A two man and thereby too narrow midfield, is an unmitigated disaster, when your back four is already suspect, we must abandon any notion of two wide men, or wingers to give them their
proper name. I don't know why TM flogs the dead horse, maybe to do with the legacy of the type of players he has available.

It has to be McGeady the sole winger, or better still in the hole, with a radical change in the way we play the game.

The rise and fall, of Caldwell and McManus. what's gone wrong?

The way we are attempting to play the game, that is the answer.

HH

Martin42

Whoops! Paul could get around the pitch in those days, but of course it was Mick at centre-back left. I did miss one other player also, John Kennedy came on as a late substitute for Doumbe, who himself got a bad injury that night. Two good players who we never saw enough of.

My "Tim" sensibilities would suggest that whoever it was probably found it anathema to acknowledge the fact, (though I did not follow most of the preceeding action.)
Though I'm aware of these things I don't like having to be so attuned. I guess we all learned a lesson with lenny's treatment.

At least we didn't have to suffer that scumbag "Steven ......?" Can't remember his second name who so lavishly rejoiced in Artur's misfortune at little ibrox, windsor park.

EN

c'mon the fightin' irish!

First chance I've had to comment since end of Scotland game.

Following on from observations already posted during game.

McManus and Caldwell must show an excellent attitude in training, because Strachan,Mowbray and now Burley consistently pick them as first choice centre halves.

This Wales game is further proof of their failings.Apart from the fledgling genius that is Aaron Ramsay, this is a young and inexperienced attack which repeatedly out-witted Scotlands defence.
Celtic and Scotland fans like myself know that as central defenders Mick and Gary are weak in the air and have no pace(both look slower and slower each week).

The less obvious failing is their lack of positional awareness.Either they've become really dumb at this or their lack of athleticism doesn't allow them to go where their brain is telling them to.
Young Welshmen and SPL minnows have now put 6 past them in two games.

Glaring evidence.

Btw,O'dea is no faster.
Loovens can at least head the ball, but also lacks positional knowledge.

New defence please,Santa!

Celtic Mac and Bournesouprecipe,

As you say a right good Celtic midfield.

So what went wrong for Donatti and Jiri?

The supporters did not appreciate them, they were as often as not unkind to them to say the least.

However last year we kept urging Gordon to play the footballers, and yet when we had good footballers, we were more than reluctantto play them.

Funny old game this football.

I think we all know the answer to that, Gordon was determined to play both McGeady and Nakamura, good players both, as wide as possible. No combination of two midfielders could support attack and defence, hence the increasing vulnerability of the centre of our defence. Naka came on as substitute against AC Milan. We did not get enough out of either Donati or Jarosik, even though both started well at Parkhead.

Lazy Bhoy

could you compare him to another player?

EN

tongue in cheek

Lazy bhoy;
Compared to some of our recent signings he sounds too good to be true. I hope he is genuine quality because I do think we have quality in our ranks but we need a spark to ignite things and get us playing to our potential.

Zbyszek - My view on a lot of Gordon Strachan's signings is this (and I've said this before). He had an idea of the style he wanted to play. He, and his scouts, could spot this type of player.

Unfortunately he couldn't coach the style of football he wanted to play. I think Tony Mowbray actually can coach it, which is why Donati started to consistently look good rather than just in patches. It's a pity he had already made his mind up.

Hopefully Mowbray will get time to get some more players in, because so far it looks like the majority of the players he inherited aren't quite up to the job.

glendalystonsils & KrakowBhoy

Something came to my memory. I remember that one or two months after the departure, Jiri Jarosik gave the interview to the Russian press.
The jounalist asked him the question what went wrong at Celtic?
Jarosik answered that the weather was wrong, couldn't find communication with Gordon Strachan, couldn't understand why he was not getting the games e.t.c
He praised Krylya for letting him be back to lovely Russia.
There were more details in that interview. I thought about putting translation in here but gave it up. To be honest with you my general view was: Hola, my dear Jiri. People like you who one month after departure tell bad things about the previous club should have never been playing for the previous club.
But true. He was good player, but not for Celtic.

Talking of Donati

"Donati 'angry' at Azzurri snub"

Wednesday 11 November, 2009

Massimo Donati admits he was “angry” after reading Cagliari players got into the Nazionale and he didn’t.

The former Celtic midfielder returned to Serie A in the summer for newly-promoted Bari and has impressed, but was not included in the Azzurri squad for friendlies against Holland and Sweden.

“Was I angry? On Sunday I was a little bit, yes,” he confessed to the Corriere dello Sport.

“On the other side, there is the awareness that if players from Cagliari and the other provincial sides can get into the Nazionale, then eventually someone from Bari could get in there…”

This time round Marcello Lippi has brought in new boys Davide Biondini from Cagliari, Livorno’s Antonio Candreva, Palermo wide man Mattia Cassani and Daniele Galloppa of Parma.

“Now I dream of doing something important with Bari and reaching the Italy side through this club,” said the 28-year-old.

“Before the end of my career, just once, I’d like to wear the Azzurri jersey. I do have regrets in leaving Milan too early, but that’s water under the bridge.”

Donati began his career at Atalanta and moved to Milan in 2001, but was repeatedly loaned out to Parma, Torino, Sampdoria, Messina and Atalanta before his 2007 sale to Celtic.

He was a regular in the Under-21 Italy squad, amassing one goal in 26 caps."

EN;
I'm happy to criticise McGeady as i did in my earlier post, because I think he could take a leaf out of McGinns book on his display tonight. My opinion is based on the fact that McGeady could be a top,top player for us if he used his pace and ability to hurt defences the way McGinn did tonight.Cut out the unneccessary frills.

weeminger

I think you are right.
Strachan's style was all the time the same. Finally closer to his departure it was boring. He had the team that couldn't change the game.
For me classic is the game Holland v. Czech Republic in Portugal 2004. It was 2:1 after first half. In the second half Karol Bruckner changed Czech game and they won 3:2. Completely two different half from Czech Republic. Bruckner could change the game within fifteen minutes in the dressing room. Srachan couldn't do it. At least I can't remember Gordon's game like that one that Bruckner has had in Portugal.

Dinky Diamond/glendalystonsils

Being completely honest his actual playing style reminds me alot of Donati (tall, languid & classy on the ball), but unlike Donati he gives 100% for the whole game.

To put it bluntly he plays like Donati with a rocket his %r$e..!!

I woudn't want to put too much pressure on him, but he does look a bit special (if we can get the right partner for him in midfield so we can make the most of his talent).

He picks the bll up really deep at times - looking for an early long pass, & his partnership with Lee Chung Yong of Bolton is excellent (that's why the FC Seoul fans called them "The Double Dragons"). Not too sure what he'll make of Skippy, Sammi, Fortune though..??

The friendly finished 0-0 by the way.

Hail, hail
LB

Zbyszek,

Hear what you are saying re Jarosiks comments after leaving Celtic; I wish players could remember that they were getting paid wadfuls of dosh to warm a bench, and that sometimes things just dont work out, for a variety of reasons. At least he didnt say he was "only playing at about 60%" for Celtic, like Mark Viduka. That is s shocking statement, and a real slap in the face to fans - inexcusable.

Jarosik was one key reason why we got to 2 last 16's. He knew how to cheat in Europe. See Man Un game

Todays games got me thinking who was the last player to play for us who was uncapped at international level, was struggling but looks like its Marc Antone Fortuné.

all the ability in the world's no good if the attitude isn't right. I don't think either Donati or Jarosik could handle the fact that they weren't getting a regular start.

Not sure on the Ireland tactics, but should they stick and take the 1-0 and live to fight another day, or go all out for an equaliser, knowing that it could leave gaps at the back. The wider point is that not many of those players have experience of a tw-legged game. McGeady in the CL, not many else. It's a different mentality.

Very much like Celtic v Arsenal game earlier this season, the more talented team win assisted by a deflected goal.

Class told in the end at Croke Park, although it took a flukey goal.

I think Mc.Geady should have been on earlier, as France had Ireland penned into the final third for all the second half, and Ireland needed someone to try and bring the team up the park.

Even at that, though, they had to very good chances.

In the Norn Irn game, the commentators, Robson and Armstrong, spent the whole game drooling over Mc.Ginn's performance and they probably missed the PA MotM announcement.

Mc.Court showed good touches and passing awareness in the short time he had, playing in centre mid.

historyreader

Was watching the Ireland game and it was interesting to compare the commentators comments(George Hamilton I think) on Damien Duff and contrast them with his comments about Aiden McGeady.

In the first half Duff picks the ball up outside the French 18 yard line runs 25-30 yards back towards the Irish goal tries to finally turn back towards the French goal and wins a soft free kick, cue the boul George " Duff's persistence wins Ireland a free" its 30 yards further back from where he got the ball mind.

Second half Stephen Hunt plays the ball behind Aiden as he tries to run at the French defence. George's comment "McGeady ran too early there and gifts posession to the French". Hunt played the ball 2-3 yards behind him but of course it was all Aiden's fault.

Don't get me wrong I do not believe that Aiden McGeady is infallible but why go out of your way to apportion the blame for everything to him.

A bit like the Huns I don't think the "West Brits" of the Irish media can ever forgive a Glasgow born lad for choosing Ireland.

hail hail!

I see there was a Stephen Ireland interview today in which he justified his decision not to play for his country.
Amongst his reasons were the percieved Dublin bias in the selections and the unprofessional set-up (similar to Roy Keane's whingeing).
In answer, Dublin has about five times at least the population of Cork. As for the second reason, you'll see Drogba give his all for the Ivory Coast next summer. Don't tell me their preparations will be like Germany's.
Why does nobody say to Stephen Ireland, that you might just light up people's lives in the country by helping WC qualification, many of whom need a lift.
For the Irish on here who took great pleasure in the Grand Slam this year, could you have imagined Brian O'Driscoll retiring from international rugby at the age of 23?

I wouldn't worrry about Eamonn Dunphy's observations on anything, never mind football. He's a typical Jackeen, knows everything and done **** all. The Dublin attitude to Celtic stinks, as regards 90% of the population and commentators. If you think singing rebel songs is unpopular in Scotland, you should try most of the pubs in Dublin. Come to think of it, you could try most of the pubs in Belfast as well. Dunphy, by the way, wrote one of the first, and maybe the first, of the football books when he was at Millwall. He based it on one season, and it was well received, much in the way that the general public realise that babies can talk, and footballers can write sentences in a mostly ordered way. He had been on the books at Man U and was let go. In his opinion they didn't know what they had. His attitude hasn't changed much from that. Johnny Giles (and I hope he has them) is not too far behind him. Their newspapers are very much West Brit too. As an ex St John's player, although for not long enough, I convey all the best to St Galls in the All Ireland club championship.

Pete the beat

I'm from Dublin, not sure if you are Iirsh but Dublin does not have 5 times the population of Cork mate, possibly 3 but not 5 times.

Dont wish to start an arguement as I'm so so gutted with result.

Gotta go

Bottle of Aldi's finest Argentinian Shiraz Bonardo calls. Bit priceier than my normal vino (E5.49) but will give it a shot, anyway the E4.99 stuff was all gone :-).

Probably be back on later hammered out of my tiny mind so you have all been warned.

Roccoboy
I'm only guessing that Dublin has a population of a
million or so and Cork 200k?
The main point was that the player implied that the cities were of equal size.
I am Irish but not too disappointed as I couldn't really see them doing the business over the two legs against a team of France's quality..
Sometimes it's better that it's over quicker.

roccobhoy

tough luck on your boys tonight. beaten by a better team, though tactically a bit to cautious by Trappatoni, but you expect that.

UC

Petethebeat

A million max for dublin (doubt if its that now with the recession and a lot of the ethnic minorities returning to their native land) Cork I reckon is 300 000.

Perhaps you are correct, perhaps its better to be put out of our misery now although I believe its only 90% over if we somehow score first in Paris then that 90% is grewatly reduced.

Historyreader - they've all played in World Cup finals ?

Watching tonight's game, 1st half Ireland should have been ahead, 2nd half France came out to show how good players can turn a game around, although I'm not a fan of alot of,imo, over rated premadonias, but, trust me McGeady's not the answer, at training, might be a world beater, but I don't see him at training, I don't pay my money to watch him at training, I pay to see Celtic performing at Celtic Park. I know there's rumours of unrest at Parkhead, but if the players are unhappy with the management, the correct wy to address it is to play out your skin to prove to the management that they're wrong, not to go on a tools down exercise, as imo, the're doing right now, sorry for the rant, but after 2 bottles of, for the benefit of Blanetyre Time, Austrailian merlot,I'm extreamly pissed off.

Owen,

Having weighed up all the evidence I can categorically state that its alright for the money I paid for it. I am not exactly a wine expert, I expect only 3 things from wine, not unpleasant taste, high ABV and low cost. Easily pleased or what?

That is the first time I have watched the game on the telly with the only background sound being the crowd ( Ireland v France)- for a short time in the fist half. The joy of that soon became a memory as yet another EPL lover (R Houghton) announced that an Irish lad had shown naievete in a breakdown of an attack as he was up against defenders from the EPL and La Liga . Sums it all up. Oh yes R Houghton - the FAI can flash the cheque book provided by Murdoch !

I referred to the sales promotion ads on the big screens at half-time in the recent League Cup game as a 'video jumble sale'. The credit crunch has hit all retail outlets in one way or another, I guess the trick is not to lower the tone of the message. You're right that the e-mail bombardment is embarassing, and I think does nothing to encourage repeat purchase - too much of this and we'll all go 'och I'll get it on sale'. This is damaging - those in charge of Celtic retail are either car-boot sale tacticians and not marketing strategists, or are in a particularly bad way. You can't have your Bank Holiday Monday sale every day, and using every medium.

to think if we had of spent money in january we wouldnt be getting this nonsense?

during the 3 in a row i cant remember getting any of this?

Good morning all

As MurdochAuldandHay has already mentioned, a very good evening, and it's best that a committee member passes on the final totals. A rather emotional evening to be honest but a satisfying one.

I met so many people whom were user names only until this evening and given the fact I have had a few drinks, I'll pass on naming them for now in the event I inadvertently miss someone out.

Suffice to say I was privileged and honoured to meet many good friends and people tonight and look forward to the pleasure of your company at some point in the future.

Hail hail

Chris sutton is a legend

Since there was a lack of decent games I doubled my usual maximum stake and put it on Brazil and Spain.

Xabi Alonso is one of the greatest midfielders playing today..

EN

EN,

You have mail.

Just back in from the race night. What a fantastic evening. Like MAH I will leave it to the committee to give the final figure, all I would say is that I am so proud (again) to be a member of the Celtic family.

I also had the priviledge of being introduced to our most unassuming of hosts Paul67 and his wife. Paul without you none of this would have been possible. You should rightly feel extremly proud of your efforts as should the committee who have worked hard for this campaign.

Finally on a slghtly sour note leave off McManus and Caldwell. Whilst I am a critic at games it does us no favours to slag off our own players at OUR functions. Leave that to the low lifes in the press.

It was a pleasure to meet so many good Celtic men, Mouldy67, Bull67, Tinytim, Jonnybhoy, Chris1888 and many more.

Catman

EN,

Pity no-one told that to Rafa. His Liverpool side have looked totally disjointed all season, even when Gerrard and Torres have been fit.

interesting what you say there

that statement reads to me i slag them at games but because

(a) 1 of them turned up

(b) the press turned up

i dont anymore?

dont know if its late or whatever but thats the way it reads

antrimkev

If I belive any Celtic player is not good enough I will comment at games, on line or in the pub with mates. However what I do not appreciate is going to a Celtic function and 2 of our players being continually put down.

Not good in my opinion.

Catman

catman fair enough

what happened tonight?

did any of the 1st team turn up?

No first teamers there due to the international break. George McCluskey and Tommy Boyd were in attendance.

Just in from the Race Night. Thanks to everyone who helped out, donated prizes, bought raffle tickets, bet on horses, bought auction items or came along to support us. You all played a part in an incredibly successful event.

Back in June we set ourselves a target of raising £50,000 towards Bringing Martin Home.

Tonight we presented Martin's father, Matt, and his sister, Mandy, with a cheque for £60,000!

It was a brilliant Celtic night, and an emotional one too. Further details, stories, photographs and videos to come tomorrow.

As well as the players Catman mentioned, Charlie Gallagher and John Fallon were also there.

Kano's dad and sister were also present tonight and were obviously very emotional. A mixture of pride, pain, gratitude, relief and respect would be an appropriate summary of their emotions I feel.

catman

i take it there was a lot of abuse about our back 3!!! (jesus wept) from the scotland game then

that was against wales!!!

Gordon_J,

Truly incredible. What an outstanding achievement. Well done to yourself and the rest of the committee for all the time and effort you've put into making that size of cheque possible.

And of course well done to the Celtic family for always giving and giving and then giving some more.

You and your fellow commmittee members take a bow, proud of you and all the CELTIC Family.
Is KANO GETTING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS that's the question we need to know ??.
God Bless KANO.

Thanks folks.

The money is there, the work to the house is well underway.

All looks good for Kano to be home before Christmas.

A fantastic total.

Totally astounded of forehead.

I will, for what its worth comment later, on my thoughts on this epic journey and the people I have met along the way

AKev

No abuse was directed there way just a continual put down of 2 of our players at a function, Anyway enough on that as it was a fantastic evening and that was a minor irritation.

On the Wales game Naismith was to blame for the 1st goal, Dorrans for the 2nd and Fletcher for the 3rd although McManus was also culpable.

As with Celtic if you cannot score goals and you have a defensivly weak midfield this just highlights deficiencies at the back. I am old enough to remember such defensive stalwarts as Frank Munro, Willie Gaedner, Paul McGugan and Lex Ballie but we had a midfield and forward line that would score more than we would lose.

It is after all a team game

You must be young.

Your comments of where Celtic are at the moment are well wide of the mark. We are at the top of the league, not playing well granted but still on top.

When you are playing away at St Joohnstone on the last game of the season to finish 4th or was it 5th then your comment would stand up. Anyway times up for me enjoy the rest of your night.

Lullabies...... That was easy for you to type. ;0)

I remember the night Ramie posted his news about Kano. I was online that night. Now I have never met Kano but his posts left me in no doubt of his character... And that impression was what I posted immediately after Ramies news...
He is a Fighter...
I miss his night shift perspective on here....
It is, I believe, very similar to my own....
Haste ye back Kano.

Roll On The Perspective?
No Doubt.

Guys - details will follow tomorrow, but as Gordon has already stated we had an incredibly successful night. We couldn't have asked for a better close-out night for the campaign.
A very pwoud evening to be part of the Celtic family.

That's my time in the committee over....quite possibly the best thing that I'll ever do in my lifetime!

TC - your prize sold well, details to follow, but you should be proud of yourself.

TTTT

Gordon_J , TTTT , CRC , MWD and all the rest .

I've only met a few of you . I was humbled tonight to be in the presence of ghuys who have given so much for one of us . We all like to talk a good game but when it comes to the crunch , it takes a certain type of person to step up to the plate - a person like you guys.

I had a couple of tears in my eyes tonight - they revolved around Kano and his family (immediate and us) . His father and sister showed great dignity on (another) emotional night and I felt for them - they have experienced such extremes of emotion over the last year or so that to have it culminate tonight must have been overwhelming.

Once again , you , the Celtic Family , showed what it means to belong to such a group - you make me proud.

God Bless you all. Hail Hail.

Anyways....
Signing off with one for Kano et al

Congratulations to the folks that have clearly made the race night such a remarkable success, by any standards - gives me some faith in the human race, never mind Celtic fans!

Antrim Kev - I'm with Catman67, the current bunch aren't great, but they're miles ahead of most a lot of our 80s players. Can you think of a Celtic defensive partnership from the 90s (pre Stubbs/Rieper) that was better than the current incumbents? We all called them The Seive for a reason. Of course, that doesn't mean we shouldn't seek improvements.

Agree that its embarrassing that its a Celtic defence in place when Scotland get cuffed by a transitional Wales team but, as someone pointed out earlier, most of the blame for each goal lay outside the central defenders. As far as our defenders are concerned, only one was obviously sub-standard, and that was Fox. I'm with Kojo on this - he's not shown, or showing signs that, he's any better than Naylor. However, he's only played for us competitively for 3 months, I'll not write him off just yet.

Er, what's the opposite of "Podium!"? I'm off to bed before the antipodeans start logging-on.

Just in from celticrollercoaster's post race night night.

To everyone involved in raising the money to get Kano home, in all the fund-raising efforts, from Pablo and DBBIA with the badges, through to last night -

A huge well done to all, especially the committee for pulling this all together. And a big thanks to Paul67, for without his blog, we would never have heard of Kano's illness, and would not have been able to help one of our own in his time of need.

£60,000 is a truly fantastic sum.

Unfortunately I was unable to come down to Glasgow yesterday, but raised a wee cuppie tea to you all during the evening!

I look forward to hearing stories about the evening, and to seeing photos / videos.

LB

Very well done to all the Bhoys who were able to attend the Kano function....incredible success...!!

Well done to all involved last night.

Lazy Bhoy: I have no idea but he looks like he can take a penalty!

I know that videos can be flattering, but this Giroud fella looks good.
God knows we need someone who can score goals.
I've been really disappointed in Samaras this season.
I really thought he'd establish himself, but it's just not happening.
The frustrating thing is, that there's a good player in there somewhere.

Very disappointing to read about Caddis' disillusionment at Celtic. It now looks highly likely he will be off in January. If so, that would be yet another black mark against Mowbray for me. He has more than earned his chance.

Forgot how he was dropped for Wilson against Rapid Vienna. What an appaling decision.

He will go in January for nothing.

Meanwhile, the man everybody raves about on here didn't start for Ireland last night, and when he came on turned in his usual desultory performance.

No doubt it's all Trappatoni's fault, the Irish pundits' fault, Gordon Strachan's fault etc.

Well?

Can't wait for the 'na na na na not listening not listening na na na' posts.

Exactly rbf. I have had an ACL reconstruction myself and they nearly always are accompanied by soft tissue and cartillage damage in the knee. The cartillage nearly always has to be removed. Playing on could very well leave him with arthritis and needing knee replacements if he was to continue to suffer damage in his knees. It's very nasty and I feel sorry for him - I know he is so highly thought of north of the border and there's a good chance that had not injury intervened he would have been Celtic's and possibly Scotland's captain by now. A truly sad case of a talent prevented from blossoming.
