Celtic tackle miserly Aberdeen's away record
Aberdeen grabbed the headlines last weekend with their win against Rangers with 10 men but their progress under Mark McGhee after a slow start has been steady and substantial. Celtic won at Pittodrie on the first game of the season but Aberdeen's only away defeat came at Easter Road, when their nine men held on until the 88th minute.
They have also lost only 4 goals on the road, less than half the total Celtic has conceded, so we know Celtic will have to work for anything they get in front of goal.
A week ago Tony Mowbray looked ahead to the prospect of winning three consecutive home games. This sounded like an important target at the time and with victories against St Mirren and Hapoel Tel-Aviv achieved, completing the week with a win tomorrow will go a long way to securing confidence that the troubles of recent weeks have been arrested.
Scott McDonald and Aiden McGeady usually enjoy playing Aberdeen; if both are on their game tomorrow Celtic will have enough to collect three points.

Near the end of TB's reign it started, continued with Wim and Dr Jo to a certain extent. Got intense when KD arrived and the same treatment happened to MON and GS as KD.

Robbie Keane is not a great goalscorer, rather a scorer of great goals.
He spends too much time in the mid field to be an out and out goalscorer.

A win tomorrow and even the most negative amongst us would have to concede that progress has been made. I would love a 3-0 confident looking Celtic and if they play as they did for spells on Wednesday they will get that comfortable win. 1 gripe would be Fox think he may need dropping for a couple of games, he does not look like playing his way out of this massive dip in form from his pre Scotaland cap days.

Paul67 - Any opinions on Tudhope being ousted from PPG?

Celtic fans are becoming more and more difficult to please. I think the nouveau-Celtic fan is especially hard to please. Having attended most home and away games while Rangers won nine titles in row and then witnessing the revival of fortunes once we won the league under Jansen through to the present day, I must say I think we are a long way from the doom and gloom you read on here. Having said that, I think we have some serious problems at the moment in terms of playing staff and supporter indifference but things ain’t as bad as some on here would have you believe. I’m not having a go at anyone in particular as some fans may not have suffered the really bad times therefore their perspective will be different from others.
Voguepunter – surely we’ll do 3-in-a-row tomorrow ;)
As for imposters, there are always some on sites like this – I was always taught to ignore the dafties and they’ll go away.
Paul67, can you provide me with some info please?
On the Rangers takeover, the Florida guy, and their accounts, show that they have approx £115m in assets. What exactly would these be?
OK they have Ibrox but unless you want to buy that and use it as a football stadium, surely thats not got a great value as to develop the land, you would have huge costs incurred in demolishing the stadium?
They have Murray Park but that is on green belt so they would not be allowed to build on it so again, unless you want to buy training facilities, well its only of use if you have sheep and cows. And there has been a worldwide crash in property prices but their figures do not reflect that.
So where does this £115m figure come from? Certainly not the team valuations?
By contrast, Celtics accounts show a figure closer to £56m for assets.
Can you explain to us mere mortals how these figures are calculated?

At the rate of return based on Keane's cost,he would have to score about 100 goals a season.
Keane is a player who runs about the middle of the park and into the channels. I'm not decrying the boy, but we have an abundance of players who do that, and Robbie excites and frustrates in equal measure. Again,we have plenty of candidates for that job.
He is more highly thought of at International level than at club level. A bit of a David Healy.
Paul67 - as well as the language violations, can you do something about the deteriorating standard of spelling and grammar on this site?

You're right Keane would be rubbish in Scotland, better off with Kevin Kyle.
Who would you like to see up front? and how much would you be willing for us to spend on that player?
Keane brings far more than just goals, bums on seats, ticket sales, good will from the fans, a captain, an idol for the fans to unite behind.
But of course it would involve spending money and showing some ambition, I'm sure you wouldn't want the board to do that after all look at Leeds United and Rangers tsk tsk.

Any of the regulars on here notice a distinct rise in "possible imposters" on here in the past few weeks?
Either that or our fans are becoming increasingly hard to please."
It isn't possible that there are no imposters on here.....It is in the interests of our main competitors that there is division and unrest amongst our support, in some ways it is by far their best chance for success...
these imposters may be individuals who think they are doing good work, they might be more organised than that, they might be hired and paid and holding a PR/damage limitation contract with Rangers, some might even be Rangers employees......
they could be any, all or none of these .....what is certain however is that there are posters on here who do not support Celtic, and haven't declared that.....
not that we haven't got unhappy fans...we have......but some of the posters on here only post criticising the club, and are nowhere to be seen when things are going well
in that sense it's not unlike the main stream media, with journalists pretending to support teams they don't ....i have no objection to individuals like derek johnstone....he states who supports and makes no attempt to hide his loyalties.....fair enough, i don't agree with much of what he says but at least he isn't hiding behind a lie....individuals like, keith jackson, darrell king and ewen cameron stand out for 2 reasons....their lack of quality and their dishonesty.....unfortunately for them they are in a failing industry and their lack of quality will put their career's at risk.....you can't say they don't deserve it
My god have they no concept of a sporting event.

RogueLeader, yes, fascinating goings on at PPG which is an indication of what is happening across the group.
The old guard will go, that is the easy part, putting a sound business together is a lot more difficult.
Bobbycfc, as you have figures, the assets figure for Rangers is largely an opinion as opposed to a realisable figure.
Murray put £50m into the club in a debt-swap a few years ago, this is included in that figure, as is the revaluation of Ibrox and their other property assets, as are player contracts. This totals much more than £115m but against this they deduct the losses on the profit and loss account.
Philvisreturns, too troo (sic).

It is a matter of historical record that a contributor to this site (Paul never named him or her) had an email address that contained the characters "coisty1690".
I believe what Barcabhoy said about Media House orchestrating some of the discontent. Paul should take it as a great compliment.
As regards genuine dissatisfaction, not to say disaffection, among genuine Celtic supporters, it is perfectly in evidence at Celtic games. I say 'genuine' because I believe it would have been too much to ask even of Media House to orchestrate in-the-flesh dissent.
People have to have a right to voice concerns but I fear sometimes that some of us, after we helped Fergus topple the old regime, imagine that to have been more than a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The things we complain about now are small compared to that turn of events. Thank God.

Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice.
I stopped going regularly to Celtic park about 5 years ago (still manage a few games a season)due to the birth of my first son. I have been given the go ahead by my wife to take him to his first game and have tickets for the game this weekend, we're in 408 (all going well it will be season tickets next season). I don't normally drive up but because of his age I thought I would take the car. We'll be going early so I can take him to the superstore but I'm unsure where to park. I know parking is a nightmare. Any help would be much appreciated.

Perhaps Paul could set up an entry test for newcomers like "who were the first club on these shores to win the big cup in Europe and in what year?" You have 15 seconds to submit an answer. Incorrect and timed out answers lead to only one logical conclusion. Invasion attempt by a bear.
If there's anybody reading this at the CP ticket office, can you answer the bloody phones, I've been phoning all you're numbers since 12 O'Clock, I want to spend some money.

Not been to bed yet.
But there has been a definite drift over the months to assume that criticism means 'one of them'.
I could quote so many times that individuals have been told to go back to FF, or the dark side, or school, or bed or anything apart from just arguing the point.
People that I hasten to add are as Celtic through and through as possible.
Now what has happened is that those who have been maligned (and you ought to see some of the e-mails I get, as my handle links to my address) have decidided that occasionally a wee game is a biy of fun.
It happens every night up the pub and if for saying the same up there as some do on here resulted in being called a hun, then raucous laughter would be the first reaction and then.....well I leave that to your imagination.
For instance, Auldheid I believe is a board plant, and if he's not then he should apply for a job. But I still think he supports Celtic. But perhaps he just wants to see us going down the road of perdition. Perhaps he is that rare incarnation of a numerate hun.
Or how about this, CelticQuickNews was formed on the back of a view that the traditional media were manipulative and needed to isolated and then ignored.
Surely no one would then go and use STV as a means to have a dig at Celtic fans, not right in front of the stadium anyway. Impossible..of course.

Id like to see us come out with a quick start tomorrow attack them from the off and try and get the game won quickly. Glad Paul67 reminded of Scott McDonald's record against them and Aiden McGeady's performances. Hopefully we get another McGeady MotM performance and McDonald goals, he is due at least one in this game, probably the first..
Play with confidence and get three wins in a row.

The type of player we need ,imo, would be more Michael Owen than RK. Someone who would hang around inside the box and leave the foraging to others.
A fitter Skippy could easily fulfil the role, providing the service improved. I think it is in the service department that we need to concentrate on.

"You're right Keane would be rubbish in Scotland, better off with Kevin Kyle."
Are you at your old tricks again? Putting words into people's mouth.
I said that Keane is not the type of player we need as we have an abundance of players who frequent the midfield and occasionally score great goals. Think David Healy.
You also said.
"Keane brings far more than just goals, bums on seats, ticket sales, good will from the fans, a captain, an idol for the fans to unite behind."
A lot of supposition there. I presume you are trying to play the old Irish card there, are you?
Still, if bringing RK to Celtic Park would renew your credentials as a Celtic supporter, maybe that wouldn't be a bad thing.
The question is, would the return of one soul justify the financial outlay? Hmmm.
See, I can do sarcasm too. Now get back to your work!
Anyone see this Q&A session in the ET with the guy who might be managing a take over of Rangers?
http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/editor-s-picks-ignore/q-a-graham-duffy-answers-questions-on-his-plans-for-fans-buyout-at-rangers-1.989433
I know I shouldn't be surprised at the old media but this, following on so closley to the the ET's front and back pages a week or so ago about RST calling for a boycott of Lloyds, is a complete joke.
The might as well just call themselves the RST newsletter! It's now gone beyond the usual suspects just supporting Rangers in the media, the Eevning Times now seems to be the public face of a small niche (and slightly hysterical) group of fans. I suspect Darrell King is the link....

Sal in the near future your son and other young up and coming Celtic fans wont know what all the fuss was about getting trains to Central station and pounding the road to CP or the problems tearing your hair out trying to find somewhere with parking spaces.
Due to our famous stadium beiong chosen as the venue of the opening ceremony for the 2014 commonwealth games, which will be attended by her Maj none other, aren't we to be honoured? The East end of Glasgow will become the hub of the games with the 'Commonwealth village' being built in the area.
Due to this i'm led to believe that the construction of all new transport access links to the Parkhead area will be underway soon to co-incide with the start of the games so we shall soon be able to get a train and/or underground right to the door of our home to watch the Bhoys in action.
It's fantastic in it's own right but a HUGE bonus is the Huns are raging we are getting £ spent on us and the fact that Lizzie's coming to our place for the day with the tricolour and all flying freely on the roof of our stadium along with most probably the League flag. Ibrox is getting Cycling and shot put or something i think and that makes me laugh, no wonder their raging Chris Hoy will be forty and fat by then!!!
Who knows, maybe they will even name a train station 'Celtic Park' now that would be something eh???
I hope BTM can get his 3 consecutive wins?, as I believe the man needs a bit of slack with the supporters never mind the media.
I hope we beat Aberdeen with style and goals tomorrow and although the Big Guy has made some strange tactical switches? I for one will be cheering hard at Celtic Park for him as We all need to show our unity with the manager and his team!!
Anyone think the reason McGeady's stepped up a gear in the last few weeks is because he's wanting a move next month ?

Right since I'm in Oz you can have my secret parking space. No kidding.
In fact before the Celtic v AC Milan game a few seasons back, I was parking up with Big T, Paul, Pat, Mick the Gunner (mate from London), and Maggie the squeeze.
I opened the door and like a tube of toothpaste the contents spilled out (or in Maggie's case sort of oozed sexily out) of the sudden opening.
A fella came up to me and checking his shoes for stray maggie-ooze he said.
"Ah widnae park there mate, folk are watchin!"
I looked around and so they were.
"Aye, so whit?" I saked.
"Well they'll know that anyone can park there, won't they. Next week someone else will take the space"
There are moments in life when reason no longer applies and I asked him.
"should I move the car then and leave the space empty"
"Naw, I widnae get the pound fur lookin after yer car then wid ah.Ahll get somebody else's on Saturday"
Anyway, cross London road frae the greendyke road side, turn right into the estate, turn right at the junction, turn left, turn first right and on the corner there is a wide pavement. No one parks there apart frae me and anyone who might have been watchin that night.
I've never failed to park there.

lubo1977 - You are probably right but pity them and laugh instead of getting worked up.
First we had Dave King. We all knew it was mince due to his "little problems", when the game was rumbled they moved their hopes onwards.
Then it was the Florida "billionaire". When it turned out he is in fact a pretty low "millionaire" with a string of failed businesses the RST have about turned and instead of him being the great white hope and "only show in town" that he was last week, today and yesterday he is being spun as merely a player in a larger consortium. Which has again been downgraded from being the front man in a consortium that he was at the start of this week. Of course this is a Dubai based consortium...erm that is the last base you want for a consortium after this weeks events I would suggest.
They are desperate. The more cerebral among them know how dire the situation is. The rest are just grabbing onto to any passing log in an attempt to sustain their dwindling hope.
The facts as I am aware is no consortium have officially stepped forward. No due dilligence has been carried out. The stuff the RST are being fed and in turn are feeding to a greedy media willing to print it verbatim is just now the ramblings of an irrelevant little man with a pie in the sky plan. To be fair reading the threads on Follow Follow the RST are starting to get it in the neck. The fans are losing confidence in them due to their dithering, their constant change of position and them not doing the things they say they will. There is a great deal of scepticism growing regarding the RST and the feeling they are being played by somebody for their own ends. A dangerous time for them. They clearly want fan ownership. They have always wanted this but in their desperation they are jumping at anyone offering this without looking at it rationally. If they back the wrong horse their dwindling credibility, and hopes for fan ownership, will be smashed against a wall never to be regained.
There is no way they will get 45,000 people to stump up £1000 to buy the club. They are also still living under the misguided illusion that Rangers can be bought for the price of the Lloyds debt. As I have said I am no expert in that but I still cannot fathom how that is possible without Lloyds taking the £1bn hit of the collapse of MIH.

You're absolutely right - I shouldn't get worked up but it just beggrs belief the lack of editorial control on some papers now. Crackpot groups like the RST and walter mitty type characters get their crazy ideas printed without any sort of scrutiny. As you correctly point out, the majority of what is said about this consortium doesn't stand up to even the most basic questioning.

A study by Adidas shows that altitude at the World Cup will have an impact of up to five percent on a ball's speed. A free-kick from 20 yards during the final at the Soccer City Stadium in high-altitude Johannesburg will reach the goal line five percent faster than it would at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in sea-level Durban.
Come on CQN, why did I have to wait on thge BBC spotting that a team playing in Joburg will be a real disadvantage if their opponents are playing in Durban. (but apparently only in the case of free-kicks. Whatever happened to shies, byekicks and fouls)

No. There's not 45,000 prepared to put in £1k. Nor is there 15,000 prepared to put in £3k. I'd hazard a guess at them not even getting a commitment sufficient to hit the debt significantly.

We live in a 24 hour news frame and the media are desperate for stories. Unfortunately for the RST they don’t realise that no one takes them seriously.

Nothing wrong in playing any card. However it is not a justification for signing a player.
You list the clubs Keane played for, but the common denominator is that he never lasted at any of them, for whatever reason.
Perhaps he flattered to deceive. The Healy reference was down to a player who has a higher profile and goal scoring ratio at International level than at club level.
In case you still haven't grasped what I'm saying, it is that I don't think that Robbie Keane is the type of player that we need. We have runaround players. Keane is not a penalty box predator.
If it's box office, bums on seats you want, then go to the pictures. I want players who will do a god job for Celtic.

Gordon J- I expect Kim Jong- Il will be tuning in, if he can tear himself away from 'Murder She Wrote'.

Australia, NZ and Korea are all in the same pot so cannot draw each other - but any of them could draw Germany or Greece (or both).
Fair chance of a game with a couple of Celts involved - and that's before whatever international superstars we sign in January are considered.
The day before yesterday, a taxi driver in Buenos Aires took a colleague on me on a detour on the way to the airport to come home. The company we were visiting booked the car for us and he thought he was to take us to their offices.
When we twigged the mistake, we were so far out of our way that we were a bit worried about making the flight. Buenos Aires is a big place. However, as the driver sped back towards the airport road, one of the shortcuts he took brought us right in front of the Estadio Juan Domingo Perón, home of Racing Club.
And what a crumbling old dump it appeared to be. Independiente's stadium, which is nearby, looked much newer and better.
I told the driver that I was really glad we had taken the detour and to have been able to see where Celtic played. He nodded, and then said: "What a goal Cárdenas scored that day: 40 metres out and he hit it right in the top corner. It was the goal of his life."
He was an Independiente fan.
I was only four at the timeof that match, but my sense has always been that this was a painful episode for Celtic, like the Feyenoord final in Milan, which I do remember clearly. Nevertheless, I found myself really glad to talk about it to people in Buenos Aires. The city is football mad, of course, and a lot of people remember the occasion.
I asked the taxi driver if he remembered the wee red-haired player Celtic had on the wing. He said: "Johnstone? How could I forget him?"
I'm sure you're well aware of St Johnstone and what happens there surely?

JesusJonyMacaronni if they win I think i may flit.
Sadly, not everyone loved Jinky. When I did my year abroad in Cadiz in 1977/78, the Atletico Madrid game was still fresh in the mind. I had a very vocal argument with a group of guys who accused Jinky of diving to get their players sent off.
I obviously did not have the photo of Jinky published the next day in the Record covered only by a towel and bruises, otherwise I would have shown them it. Presumably, they would have said it had been doctored. The irony was,of course, that they only had that view because that is how it was reported in the papers in Spain.
Maybe Atletico was El Caudillo's other works team after all.

Cadizzy, I did say that people who loved football loved Jimmy.
Your friend and mine, Boltonbhoy, has some scary tales to tell of the Atlético Madrid antics in 1974 making clear their scant regard for the game we all adore.
One that I remember off the top of the head is this.
Do you remember how strange we thought it that outfield players should wear gloves to play? Boltonbhoy's 'source', a friend of a friend of his called Jimmy Squash, alleged that there was more to the gloves than met the eye (nunca mejor dicho).
Jimmy's (Johnstone, not Squash) first upending of the evening came in the first minute. His opponent went to ruffle the wee man's head in apology, allowing his gloved hand to stray onto Jimmy's face and over his eyes. Before the coming out of the dressing room, the guy had, allegedly, applied liberal amounts of liniment to the glove, leaving Jinky to play the game partially blinded.

Looks like they are still very proud of those games, though his grandson talks some amount of nonsense in the comments section.

docmcdoc / lurgan/manchester - very worringly for me I think they have a chance of going far. Capello has galvanised them. If they did win it it would be unbearable...I honestly fear it is a possibility
Rough no longer since my mother moved but Campbell St is now a no go area for the police.
Actually, I can just about utter those words "I can see my house from here"
For music trivia fans only..... of the two houses facing you, the one on the right was where John McGeogh lived until he was about 16(Magazine, Banshees, Visage PIL).
RL - I live in fear of them winning it, though i could take them getting beat in the semi, that would be worth the fear and worry

Celtic have recently appointed a new scout in Dublin, his name is Joey Malone he is a former League of Ireland player and is a good scout! He sent 3 players away off the team I coached last season. We won the All Ireland cup. The 3 kids that went away on trial to Celtic are all Irish Schoolboy internationals!
The big probem with Celtic is they wont give the contracts that the likes of english temas will give. For example there is a kid by the name of Robert Brady who is an unbelieveable talent he signed for man u for 8000 euro's per week at 16 years of age on A 5 YEAR CONTRACT!I coached his brother and know his father real well he went to 33 teams on trial including celtic but celtic cant compete!!
Celtic I know for a fact get all the top young players in Ireland over but the contract they are prepared to offer are poor in comparison to alot of clubs in england! I know this for a fact as I've been around the top end of schoolboy football as a player and as a coach for 15 years!!
I could tell u about many other kids but I'd be hear all day!!

That foreign centre half we had on trial, apparently not good enough? he must be the worst cb on record to not be as good as "gary and mick." Either that or he had more than a Hibernian players wage demands ...

I think that 'emotional investment' was very much influenced by the success Martin O'Neill brought and the quality of player on show.
That quality isn't there anymore and the 'emotional investments' are thin on the ground and getting thinner.

No not as far as I'm aware, usually kids sign a 2 or 3 year Y T S (Youth Training Scheme) and a 1 or 2 year pro! This kid is exceptional though so perhaps u are right but perhaps there is a loophole which man u exploited! I certainly wouldnt know either for certain!
But this kid signed definitely signed a 5 year pro contract!
As I say I'm friendly with his dad and I coached his younger brother (who rangers want to go on trial and is also a very talented kid!). Rangers have a scout in dublin, its only a recent appointment! Undoubtedly my friend we have missed out on some gems over the years! Ro Keane as a kid also!
2 things must be said
Celtic have ( and Paul67 will verify this I'm sure) over last 1 - 2 years revamped their scouting and are more professional in their attitude towards it!
Secondly Celtic have in prev ous years had a very arrigant attitude towards Irish kids! Because of the historical nature of celtic they felt kids should want and be honoured to play for celtic. Unofrtunately their arrigance meant they missed out on players over the years because they were not prepared to pay decent (not even exhorberant) contracts to Irish (and I'm told to scottish kids for the exact same reasons!)
Hopefully things will change over next few years!

donegaldanny - I agree.
As I recall in my original post I think I was pointing out that in the end it was the fans that ended up putting in and I facetiously asked if we'd be happy for the board to announce that yes we'd get top names again but each year's loss would be added to the following year's season ticket price.
I'd love to see big names, I just don't know where the money is going to come from. The years we made profit it was used to pay off the debt. Had the profit been used solely on the squad we'd still have downsized from the MON years. The profits we were making wouldn't have supported a maintenance of that quality level. Plus we'd have a great big debt.
As I said earlier I'm not sure we have sufficient spare tickets to support more than 1 big name signing or maybe two middling ones. Empty seats aren't always unsold seats as I'm sure you know only too well.
You want the team to be better. I want the team to be better. I'm hoping that good football (if and when we do it consistently) and not big names will bring fans back, and looking in new markets for cheap, good footballers is I hope the way were looking to do it.

Been reading the posts about England and the World Cup and the dread of them winning it.
Im an exile, hated having to come here when I was young,so much so I actually at the time wanted to see the Hun knock Leeds out the early CL format back then because of the dogs I took about Scottish football n how bad we were,I wasnt really clued up enough about our history and the culture etc etc,the upshot of all this is I hated England with a passion, for years.
I too lived in the Northants area, all over it,remember the pelters I took when Gary McAllister missed that pen in Euro 96 in a pub full of face painted lairy southern English (ahem) "ladies n gentlemen",sickening moment but I did have a grin the size of a Cheshire cat when the Germans horsed them right out it later in the compy.
The point of the post.
I first got the internet about three years ago so Im relatively new to fan sites and its only through the net Ive learned much, much more about our club than I ever wouldve without, the same goes for the Hun and the things which make them Huns,do you know something, see my hatred for England, disappeared almost overnight, reading the views of Huns about us and our culture and what they think of their own just made everything I felt about England seem trivial and unimportant and Im glad because its helped me appreciate living in England, enjoy it and take advantage of what it offers and Im glad I dont have to live among the lowest of Hunnery whilst still being able to enjoy Celtic in every way.
If England win the World Cup I wont be gutted, seriously and I never thought Id ever say that,I just dont think they are that good, anyway, even with Capello,England win a WC in the heat of South Africa?? aye right!

A love of Celtic is not the exclusive domain of your good self.
However you choose to boycott Celtic Park but are happy to give your hard earned cash to Rangers?
For the love of God regardless of any issues with the board, team, manager this I cannot understand!
The simple reason why the attendances are going down is because of the poor fare that has been served up over the past couple of years on the pitch. The missing fans, many of whom are season ticket holders will come back when the football improves.

You love of Celtic shines through, and as you said yourself, you are letting this love define you to an extent.
Your posts are unremittingly regative. I for one am not uncritical nor complacent; a healthy questioning of the custodans of our club is right and proper. But in my experience people respond badly to a constant stream of negativity. For the sake of your own mental well being, you need to let it go a bit. You can't be consumed with so much frustration and bitterness towards the custodians. Please take this in the constructive way it is intended - hate to see a good Celtic man suffering!

These are always reasons why people choose not to go when they simply dont want to go. But simple fact no matter how garbage they are I will still buy my season ticket on the premise (always) that they get better. You take the rough with the smooth mate. from wikipedia
"The band have never actually disclosed exactly where the name 'Biffy Clyro' originated. They have a series of stories as to how the name came about; whilst being interviewed on Soccer AM the band stated that they named themselves after a footballer called Biffy Clyro who played for Scottish side Ayr United also admitting that they make up stories about how they are named because they are bored of being asked the same question. Another story is that one of the members owned a Cliff Richard pen, i.e Cliffy Biro', which was accidentally spoonerised on a drunken night out. The name Biffy Clyro has also been claimed in another interview to come from an acronym for "Big Imagination For Feeling Young 'Cos Life Yearns Real Optimism".[7] The band also state in an interview for Balcony TV that the band name was that of a Finnish footballer from the 17th century.[8] The band revealed during an MTV interview that Simon Neil had stepped onto a magazine after a shower when he was 11 years old, the print from the magazine had engraved onto his foot "Biffy Clyro"

For those of you dreading the thought of England winning the World Cup next year, I think you can relax.
Under Cappello there can be no doubt that England have improved dramatically. They are a formidable team. But right now, I really can't see them beating Brazil, or Spain. I sure hope so, because if England do win it, then living down here, it will be just hell. They will think the Empire covers the globe again, and every other cliche you can dream of.
Estadio Nacional 3:54
I don't rate Mr Cardoso's Argentina much chance in South Africa next year. Pleying absolute rubbish. They arguably have the best player in the World right now (Messi), but they sure haven't got the best manager. Pity in a way. Maradonna will always have a special place in my heart for his hand of God. I think Mr. Cardosa's comments are almost comical. Racing DID play like animals. I'm afraid they were typical of the style of South American teams back then. Play dirty football, and then deny everything. They always look to blame others for their dreadful behaviour. However, 40 years have passed. Their style of football has changed a lot, but for some it would appear the attitude hasn't.
Here's hoping that Celtic may have turned a corner. Could be a bit early to say, but better to view the glass as half full rather than half emoty. Surely a good win could be on the cards.

In swing parks when I was young, there used to be a contraption that was long and thin suspended on a metal frame and allowed for 6 or 7 to sit on it in single file straddle fashion. At each end, one person would stand on it holding on to 2 vertical poles coming from the top of the metal frame and they would work the swing.
We called it an american swing in Greenock but then again we had our own exclusive words for guisin (gullotians, no known spelling), truanting (skidgin') and square sausage (slice)..myso that may not be its real name.

Kojo,
I realise that you have an agenda against Aiden but he has said for years that he would like to play in a better league not just in the last few days.
McGeady is far and away the best player at Celtic Park, I hope he stays for a long time to come!
Hail Hail!

forgot about the world cup draw , tuned in, and rea;lised its not coverage of the draw, its actually the pundits talking up the chances of them winning again.
Glorious failura awaits again i am sure.
On another note, about 8 years ago, my mate who had spent time in the USA, had declared, that america would win the world cup in the next 20 years, so he has until the 2018 world cup.
I offered him £100 that they wouldnt , he accepted, i feel my cash is safe.
Kojo
If McGeady plans to move he'd be better to do so in the summer.
The January transfer window is more for distressed sales and desperate purchases than career progression.
Personally I don't think McGeady will reach his full potential if he stays at Celtic so I could understand if he wanted to move for that reason alone (never mind the money). He needs to have better players round about him to make the most of his game.
Hopefully he'll stay for another season but I can't see him being at Celtic for much longer than that.
I would rather go skidgin' than go dogging and risk bumping into Stan Collymore
rdk7,
Just been talking to a US friend who is a massive sports fan. He is uncharacteristically downbeat about his team's chances.

While many would say we can't go back in these unceratin days its the Mon years that keep me feeling that celtic can be great again. Perhaps one day we could
Have a full paradise with guys and girls wanting to go every week
A settled team with men who wore the jersey with pride and who made the other teams brick it before they stepped on the park
A team with an average height above 5,6
A team who we knew feared no one and allowed us to reach for the stars
Yes before people shoot me down we had issues under mon but they didn't feel that bad.
Come on Dr Spin and Peter Lawell get Dermot of his sun lounger and tell him. We need action, ambition and a desire to get our people back.
January can be the start don't sell the stars but add the quality we crave.

The only sport I want england to win at is Cricket as they have players who are decent lads and they are no way as arrogant at that sport as the Aussies are. My pal is also a cricket fan and it is a good laugh. Good on England for the cricket.
With football, I used to be far more annoyed when they won but now I do not care. They won't win the World Cup because they won't beat Brazil, Spain, Italy or the Dutch who are all techincally better than them. The Portuguese and the Argintinians are technically better too and then they might get one of the hard African countries. They have a good team now under Capello but they lack three things - balance in the team, a top class keeper and an out and out goal scorer. They have wonderful players but if they get penalties they will bottle it as usual. Quarter finals team, maybe semis if they get lucky but they won't win it.
I had 2 English lads round my house in Slovakia last week and they were saying aree you supporting England next year and I said, NO I am not English so why should I? English lads say stuff like it's a team's world cup final when they play us but is it less so when anyone plays Brazil?
If they do win it they may deserve to but they base this on the EPL which has 4 good teams full of foreign players and they lack the mentality to win when the chips are down because they are bottlers despite Capello's organisation. Croatia were a busted flush when England got them a second time and they can't beat the elite they crave being among.

Agree with your synopsis. Although I'd replace North Korea with New Zealand who had to beat the mighty Fiji, New Caledonia and Bahrain to qualify. Could be the worst team since Zaire in '74 to qualify.
What's also important is the half of the draw they come out in. South Africa are in Group A so they really want drawn in Group B, C or D, preferably B with say Italy and Germany as the top seeds in C and D. This would mean them avoiding Brazil, Argentina, Spain and Holland till at least the semis (I think).
China's media said that ZZ would want to leave Celtic in January 2010!

I always back Argentina for the world cup but Maradonna is going to waste their chance, Id have made them favourites if they had a manager. Heard the other day that he only trains the team in the afternoon as he doesnt like to get up in the mornings, you would hope someone at the AFA would give him a kick but his legend status is going to be their downfall.
Watching the bbc build up to the draw, they are going to be worse than bbc Scotland sport in the summer, they almost make you yearn for Craig Paterson.

It would seem that there are 24 teams whose only fear right now is drawing the mighty English. Imagine the relief they would feel to get drawn with a lesser team like Brazil or Spain.

Here is a devil of a question for the Ireland supporters amongst us - England meets France in the World cup final who do you want to win?
Listenning to Adrian Durham and Ray Houghton big up England just before the World Cup draw but thank god for Stan Collymore (I know he hasn't got a nice past)for talking sense and bringing the conversation back to reality. I don't mind listenning to Stan he talks like a fan and is always taking up their causes unlike Ray Houghton who patronise callers to the station and always resort to disparaging comments "Have you ever played the game professionally" when callers are getting their point over.
On BBC they are already talking about which sides England will avoid until the final.

I seems that you are basing most of your complaints against my Past
Criticism,of Aiden..
In the Following...
That, as He is an Ardent Celtic Man...and...in light of that universal knowledge..
I Kojo, should not have the Temerity to question his PRESENT VALUE to the Celtic Team.
I couldnae care less, if Aiden Supports Celtic or No.
I have already specified what is my Criteria on forming a Judgment as to whether a Player is playing well or no.
And, I can assure you... In using that Criteria..
Master Aiden, has disappointed More often that Not.
I have already stated that in his last Two Games , Aiden, has
shown me that he has possibly began the Process of Straightening Himself Up..and in so doing, is exhibiting the promise, that
he may get that Pilot's Licence, efter Awe!
What an easy group for the Huns of international football.

This is by Celticmined's resident financial guru
"http://www.heraldscotland.com/busine...tions-1.989380
"Q. What other interests do you have, how much are they worth and in what areas are you currently looking?
A. Due to the current financial crisis it became evident the property markets would take a significant time to readjust. In the intervening period, I was fortunate enough to be associated with a number of innovative entrepreneurs, which led us down a path into manufacturing.
We subsequently formed Global Hybrid Roofing Solutions, spent 14 months acquiring the intellectual property rights for its environmental roofing products, and invested millions of dollars incorporating and branding the company. We were offered $45m cash in New York a few months ago in return for a small equity stake in the company, pretty impressive for a company less than nine months old at the time – but we turned the offer down.
Since then we have enticed some of the best chemists in the world into our material supply division. We also moved into renewable energy and were in the market to purchase a windfarm recently acquired by Guy Hands of Terra Firma for $400m. We are in the process of constructing our own wind farm for $ 20m. Again this was down to caution and prudence. I personally completed a transaction to buy Iolife, an alternative health company based in Copenhagen."
Let's take a look- shall we?
Firstly Duffy's comments are generalized and bs artist stuff. The numbers which matter: Annual profits... or even annual sales... are never mentioned.
Lots of unprovable inuendo...
"we were offered..."
words to the effect of "we tried to buy a windfarm... and someone else paid a lot of money for it" What the fk relevance does your failed attempts have to do with anything? I tried to buy Microsoft this week. I offered them $10 for the lot- but they said no. And MSFT is worth billions now.
Global Hybrid Roofing Solutions:
A wee check on Dun & Bradstreet US shows that this company has almost no trading record. The company has existed for less than a year, has transaction values listed on D&B of less than $20,000 total!
There is a press release which mentions plans to invest $50m... but again "plans" no actual investment!
Iolife:
"I personally completed a transaction to buy Iolife, an alternative health company based in Copenhagen."
If he owns Iolife Ltd... someone forgot to tell the UK government. As its only shareholder listed on companies house is a guy called Steven Temple from County Down. The UK branch of this business is also very small and not so profitable.
Assets of GBP105K... Liabilities of GBP144K
That's right... it is technically insolvent. (Bit of a trend here...)
Now you might say... "but he said Denmark". Iolife Ltd makes reference to the product being "invented" by a Dane.
So maybe this is a big company is Denmark?
Here is the Danish website: http://www.iolife.dk ...it is some wee gadge's blog! I cannot find any evidence of this product ever having been for sale in Denmark (might be that google.dk isn't very good).
Now to be fair... these are his "new" ventures. But the Iolife is nothing but a sham and a con. Look at the website: iolife.co.uk
This is a total con.
The roofing products is either so small and new that no one knows about it... or it is also a con.
To be fair- he did not say that these companies are how he got rich... but he does not tell us which ventures made him his fortune back. Just some inuendo about property and getting out at the top. (He could foresee the global property market collapsing a few years ago, but says he was surprised by the suddeness of Rangers and David Murray's problems? )
Relax tims... Rangers fans having their emotions toyed with by this (alleged - ed)charlatan suits us just fine. With every cycle of raised and dashed hopes fewer will show interest in being involved in any buy out. This t**l is doing us a massive favour!"

Oh dear. Not the kind of leadership statement (the last line) I expect from a Celtic manager...........
""I'm a pretty open guy and I like to talk about football but if it keeps getting used against you every week, then why keep falling in the same trap?
"I love to talk about football, I'm an honest guy but it doesn't seem to be a positive, it seems to be a negative."
Mowbray added: "It's pretty open for the world to see. In Scotland you are either great or you are not.
"There seems to be no grey areas, so let's not talk about grey areas, let's keep it black or white.
"I worked with the media in Edinburgh and the west midlands and now I'm working with the media in Glasgow.
"I've played here at Celtic for four years so it has been a period where you see if things have mellowed but maybe it's naive to think that they have mellowed.
"I've enjoyed five or six years working as a manager and I've never had the reaction or the manipulation of what you might say.
"I understand it but the bottom line is when you are speaking to the media in the west midlands, there doesn't seem to be an agenda there, or the need to twist things.
"So you can talk honestly and openly and have a bit of banter with the journalists who are not there to create stories that aren't there.
"You definitely can't do that here. But I'm not here to change it, I'm here to work within it and I will do that."

On the contrary I think he is being canny to avoid a ton of 'Celtic Paranois' derision. It is possible to say one thing and do another. I hope he does elaborate more when instances such as Darren Dods' Lev Yashin impression crop up instead of meekly accepting it.

Just checked the World Cup draw against the current World rankings, to discover that Group C is made up of;
England 9
USA 14
Slovenia 23
Algeria 28
Note that there is no team ranked top eight in Group C, Group G however includes both Brazil (2) and Portugal (5). England did not deserve to be a top seed, since both France (7) and Portugal (5) are ranked higher than them. FIFA's explanation is that France and Portugal had to qualify via the playoffs, and therefore had their opportunity in the qualifiers, which is almost exactly the argument Robbie Keane made after FIFA seeded the playoffs. You could not make that up! Incidentally the rankings are no longer FIFA rankings, but officially the FIFA/Coca Cola rankings. Pity Disney wasn't the main sponsor!

On the previous thread, some posters were claiming that as many as 8,000 Celtic fans with match tickets failed to turn up on Wednesday. I said I reckoned the true figure would be more like a thousand.
A few posters came on and told me of themselves and people they know who had tickets but did not go to the game.
Ok . . . so how does that prove there were 8,000 absentees rather than 1,000.
Also, if there were a lot of tickets unused, how does that prove that Celtic counted the unused tickets in the official attendance? Maybe 36,000 (just as an example) tickets were sold and the official attendance of 35,010 was the number who turned up. I don't know, but I still await an inteligent response to my question - why would Celtic exaggerate the attendance figure?
I am not saying I am definitely right here. I am merely playing devil's advocate to the people who claim it as FACT that their ESTIMATE of the crowd was way below the official attendance released by Celtic.

For the record keep an eye on Paul W Flynn and dont worry if the horse has no form and even better if there is no money for it.
My pal gave me one of his at Uttoxeter in May.No form (UFP0P type of thing) 33/1,total no hoper (ah I will try a ten each way) won at 25/1,won easily like an odds on shot.

The point I was making about people who were pro Israeli is that they would have become part of a protest whether they agreed or not, regardless of them personally waving the palistinian flags.
It would encourage anti semitism because it is a football match, a lot of people jump on the bandwagon without knowing what they are getting involoved in. Not that I want to compare the STUC to the Nazis but it is similar tactics that Hitler used to get Germans onside in the 1930s.
Also, the fact that it was announced so shortly before the game meant that there was little time for people to meet and decide as groups (such as GB or JB) what to do. The whole idea was stupid and hypocritical.

A duff goalie did't stop Brasil from winning World Cups, not that I am comparing England to Brasil. The summer is a long way away from now, I think England has a good starting 9 players, a few injuries to important players and they are sunk. The depth of their squad is weak but they do have some game changers and I am thinking of Rooney, Gerrad(never really does it for england like he does for Liverpool) and Joe Cole. With the right breaks they have got as good as chance as anyone plus the weather is cool that time of year in S.A. and I don't think they are playing in any stadiums where the altitude becomes a factor. Could be a bad summer for posters like me that live darn sarf. I just hope they do their usual screw up.

That is spectacularly unfair. I am excrutiatingly ugly. Ask Kitalba, Sydney Tim and Michael Collins if you don't believe me. In the 70s, Susan Boyle knocked me back in the Kinema in Dunfermline.
In fact, when I was born, I was so ugly, the midwife slapped my mother.
My real name is Thursday, not Tom. That is because when I was born, the midwife held me for a moment, looked at my mother and said, "I think you should call it a day."
I am so unlucky that, if there is reincarnation, I'll come back as me.

It is a given. England are a shower of bottlers but as I said on clyde tonight redraw redraw. However they will not do it because they have too much on them and they lack overall quality. Terry, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney are good but after that they have some very ordinary players. Ashley cole gets way too much praise because he plays in england ( is he really that much better than Grossso?).

I agree with your assessment of England players, I might disagree on Terry I find he is a bit slow at this level. The player I think if he stays healthy who has bundle of talent is Joe Cole, if he is on his game he can tear defences apart.

I firmly believe England have an excellent team and a great squad of players, plus more importantly, a World Class manager and coach.

I left the country 5 years ago. Also, your logic is flawed. You leave the country, so Celtic start winning, ergo YOU are the jinx. Please stay out of the country.
Anyway, I'm too ugly to be a jinx.

The point I was making was the aggression that such a display would show, preying on the ignorant and the weak to join in without knowing what they were doing was a tactic used in the 1930s, I didnt mean the anti semitism of the Nazis (although I can see why you thought it did as I worded it awfully).
Gold Coast tom
I agree BUT
they will not ahck it at a later round despite their natural English arrogance. They are a bunch of overpaid primadonnas and if we analyse their club sides their best players are arguably non English.
They will do well but winning it is unlikely despite what Motson will claim.

Ernie Lynch -
If a handful of Celtic fans have a habit of taking the Palestinian flag to games, that is their prerogative and I have no problem with that, so why should they desist for one game just because the opposition is Israeli?
I was against the mass flying of the flags on Wenesday because the STUC had no right to attempt to use the Celtic support, but as I said, if a supporter is in the habit of taking such a flag to games, he had every right not to see Wednesday's game as any different.

FIFA used the October rankings as teams such as France and Portugal had 2 extra play off matches to gain points in. At that time England were ranked 7th, ahead of both Portugal and France. England cruised through their qualifying group, France stumbled their way through to the play offs and then cheated into the finals. I'm a Scotsman living in Wales with Irish heritage who has no time for England but they deserved to be in the top seeds ahead of France and Portugal.
Gold Coast Tim

The England players are on such huge money in the EPL that perhaps playing in the World Cup is something of an unwanted chore. I firmly believe a lot of these guys would prefer to relax with their families on some exotic beach after a long hard season.
England like a lot of players in these islands do not have the ball skills necessary to go the whole way in these competitions. As you say it's the infusion of the top players in the world that accounts for the strength of the EPL.

Gold Coast Tom re Kyle-isn't that what used to be known as tapping up? It's now so overtly blatant that Aberdeen have advised Motherwell that they'll be approaching Motherwell with a view to signing Jim O'Brien on a pre-contract. So as much as it would disappoint me with regards to the actual player, it's pretty encouraging to me that Celtic are going about their business early.

I don't buy that for one second. Any footballer, anywhere on the planet, regardless of club salary level, would give his right leg to play in the World Cup finals.
It's not about money. It's about appearing in the greatest football show on earth.
It is the ultimate dream of ever professional footballer, with the exception of Roy Keane.

cardiffbhoy
You are correct of course that FIFA/Coca Cola did use the October rankings, but only after the current rankings were produced. Given that the World Cup is next year what is the justification for that? In part it was to punish France, but Portugal are ranked 5 and have done better than England in each of the last three major tournaments. You can give England all the moral support you want, but trust me the draw was rigged!
Ernie -
Fair enough.
If it happens I will apologise, then go and hang myself in the attic.

International football does not hold the same attraction for multi millionaire footballers that it did of yore.
The Champions League is now THE COMPETITION.
WE agree to disagree.
Re the England World Cup thing. I'd like to ask the opinion of the posters-why do we not like even the thought of England winning the WC? Is it because of the media, is it because of the players attitudes-ie prima donnas who are feted wherever they go and are paid grossly high salaries? Or is it a dislike of things English? The reason I ask is that I have taken great pleasure in England being knocked out of successive tournaments, or in some cases I haven't even bothered to watch them I could care less. But (and this is where I'm sticking my neck out here) I actually enjoyed England winning the RU WC back in 2003 (listened to the commentary on 5Live at Tannadice) and was very happy when they won the Ashes in 05 and again this summer. To me, the players of both formats seemed genuinely decent guys and with a winning mentality that wasn't tainted the same way that footballers seem to be. Granted the media coverage was totally over the top with their reactions, but didn't stick in my throat the way it does even when the football team beat the likes of Andorra!
Look, I do not want kevin Kyle BUT given our need to Bully the oposition does he not represent something of a safe bet?

I think we would get more out of Kevin Kyle than Killen but given tfod defence likes playing agsint our lightweight strikers, he is a decent weapon
Celtic Mac - why would it be rigged for England ?
Interesting arguments for and against Kevin Kyle for Celtic.
Kevin Kyle in a Celtic jersey would give Davy Weir and Boogy something to think about when we face them. Dundee United's giant defence would also have some problems with him.
Horses for courses: he would not be the number one man against top European competition but he could be a good investment to get us into Europe.

How can you say the draw was rigged on the basis of seeding?
In that case every draw in the history of football, where seeding applies, has been rigged.
Is all this angst just because England got a relatively easy draw?
My God it has started already.
I tell you what. In the build-up to the finals, and for its duration, I am going to keep well away from every Scottish fans forum, including CQN (stop cheering at the back) if only to avoid the daily avalanche of juvenile railing against England and all things English from every Scot with a chip on his shoulder and an inferiority complex.
