Celtic Triangle Masterplan set for City Council recommendation
Glasgow City Council's Executive Committee is set to receive a report on Friday outlining Celtic's Masterplan for redeveloping the area around Celtic Park. The Masterplan Statement encompasses plans for the "Celtic Triangle" between London Road, Janefield St and the proposed East End Regeneration Route (EERR), to the west of Celtic Park.
Significant plans exist to develop the area ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. The London Road School, which Celtic purchased from the council, will be refurbished with a new restaurant, cafe and bar facilities, as well as a new Club Museum. The entire area will be landscaped consistent with the "public realm strategy" with a Plaza space at the front of the stadium.
The key development will be where London Road meets the new EERR, where "a new landmark building [will be] developed at this junction to create an iconic gateway to the Stadium area". Potential uses for this building include "a hotel, further restaurant and bar facilities [and] a casino".
The report adds, "It is recognised that the design of the new buildings at this location should be of the highest standard to reflect the importance of this corner of the triangle as a key gateway to the site"
Plans are also noted to develop the peripheral areas of the site after the Commonwealth Games, with "the potential introduction of residential development to the west of the site", as well as behind the existing tenements at the corner of Springfield Road and London Road.
The plan, which will be recommended to the Committee, will do an enormous amount for one of the most deprived areas in Scotland and provide excellent facilities for visitors to Celtic Park for decades to come. It is also infused with practical and deliverable ideas, while being completely void of speculative bouts of vanity, which hindered earlier stadium-vicinity redevelopment projects in Glasgow.
The Celtic Triangle will rise like a beacon, unlike the fantasy £700m redevelopment of Ibrox, which will never see ground broken.

Given the political divide currently rife at GCC, Celtic should not be overly confident this will be passed through no matter how much sense it would appear to make.

Hmmm... that'll teach me to read the article then post!
Sounds good, something for the next generation of the Celtic family to enjoy and reinforce our famous history.
Interesting piece in Sunday times by Graham Spiers. This post from a Rangers fan raises a few thoughts especially about the behaviour of the Bank of Scotland over the last 15 years --
"another good article on this situation which has been left completely untouched with not one single piece of investigative journalism carried out by the popular press in this country, why? are they scared of losing favour?
the questions I want answered will then finally shut up the people who think a super hero with £30 million will solve this mess
the financial situation will become clearer next year when the, delayed, accounts from MIH are finally released. It has been hinted at in business reports that MIH could be 750 million in the red with assets of a lesser value than the debt. If this is true, Rangers are in trouble, big trouble.
the facts we have are that the club is in debt to the tune of £30 million or thereabouts to the bank. MIH propped up the share issue to the tune of £51 million. That is owed to MIH and the only way that wont happen is if MIH go into administration which would wipe out that debt from Rangers to MIH (unless the banks foreclose and all the threats in the world from the fans will not frighten them).
so we currently have a total debt of £81 million
now, the questions
who owns Murray Park and if it is not the club, how much is it worth to the owner?
who owns the Albion training ground (now car park)?
who owns Edminston House and offices attached to the stadium?
who runs the ticketing?
who runs the catering and how long is the contract for?
how much does Sir David want for his other shares in Rangers?
who, in their right mind, is going to invest £80 million plus on Rangers just to get us and then have to invest with no possible serious return for decades?
So the marvellous run to "9" and the elusive "10" was built not on "Murray's Millions" but on the Bank of Scotland's millions and the popular press dare not utter a whimper of complaint against their former ringmaster.
The financial mess at Rangers has yet to be fully admitted to and only then will be able to see who is most culpable".
Maybe as Celtic fans we should just hope the poodle media(which truly now includes the Herald) continue their biased and short term approach to Rangers as the "real dawn" will be even more cataclysmic.
As RST are threatening action against Lloyds, i think Celtic fans with money in Bank Of Scotland/Lloyds should be questioning how their money was used over recent times.

I would also like to thank all the readers of Celtic Quick News who checked out my brothers new football website last week. We had a great response from CQN and hopefully some of you found the articles interesting or at least funny.
The more media outlets away from the old mainstream the better, means we don't have to wade through their agendas before finding the truth.
Quite a lot of new articles have posted to the site this morning!

It was worse as I added Ajax to the mix. By all accounts Genoa were lucky to get the draw. I stayed away from the Roma game today as I tend to avoid local derbys.

Antsman, that’s not a concern I share.
Great news Paul but a few questions: What proposals are there to improve the social infrastructure for the people that actually live in the East End? Will they benefit directly from any of this? They were the intended recipients of Celtic's fortunes way back when Andrew Kerrins founded us. I hope the Celtic Triangle is a beacon of hope and practical assistance to the unemployed, the under educated and the new immigrant communities. But then I'm Robert Tressell and I would say that wouldn't I?
This will be fantastic. The benefits to Celtic and the East End aside I would dearly love to be looking over Dodgy Daves shoulder when he reads about this. Sweet schadenfraude...or is it indeed shameful joy to gloat over the downfall of an egomaniac?

I can't understand why the Murray Superdome thing never got off the ground.
No doubt there were dark, sinister forces at work - a Celtic triangle, if you will, of bankers, journalists and UEFA bureaucrats, marching to the beat of Rod Stewart's kick drum.
This is timely news on the eve of Rangers' AGM. Permarage needles will be spiking all over the place on Monday!

I am most surprised by this given the current dynamic at the City Chambers, unless Labour are three line whipped to support this by the Leader of the Council or there is heavy pressure form the SG on the SNP to support this.

This is an iteresting development. I saw the plans the first time they were rejected. As with most planning applications, i beliee the problems would be addressed and this will be passed. I this project funded by the club? More importantly, in what way will the club recieve a return on its money?
I guess the low crowds will see the end of constantly asking whether the south stand will be expanded...
Heres to some squad investment in January!
Rod Stewart on the box last night – the Celtic crest on his bands drum, getting interviewed wearing a Celtic trackie, showing his dressing room with a full first eleven Celtic team jerseys hanging on their pegs.
Gerald Butler today in one of the showbiz pieces says what he misses most about being a Hollywood Superstar is going to the Celtic games.
These guys and many more can’t wait to tell the world they are Celtic supporters – why? Because supporting Celtic is cool, Celtic are a cool club. There are some clubs that being a supporter of is just cool. Hibs for example are a wee bit cool.
You never even hear of a failed singing comic far less a “superstar” or “showbiz personality” admitting to supporting Rangers, and there will be one or two hiding. Why – Because Rangers are ugly. Their club is ugly, their tradition is ugly and their supporters are God awful ugly. This for me this is the main reason why they are struggling to find a buyer. Would you want to invest in or be associated with a product so ugly.

You missed the Ghod like Malcolm Tucker on In The Thick Of It last night.
He was talking about the Rangers Fans being a different kind of rampaging hooligan, able to perform bodily functions which would bring a tear to a glass eye .
Peter Capaldi plays Malcolm Tucker. Armando Ianucci writes the script but encourages ad libs from his cast where appropriate.
Both men are from the West of Scotland Italian community, and are extremely talented and creative, respected throughout the media and artistic community in the UK and beyond, following the sucess this year of the film version of the tv series, In the Loop, which co starred James Gandolfini, oscar winning actor and all round
Hollywood A lister.
Rangers , of course, have media big hitters in their support too. David Sneddon, for example, won the BBC talent Show Pop Stars in 2002.

Will there be somewhere for fans to eat and drink on matchdays?
For years I've watched buses and carloads of fans arrive at the ground and we have nowhere to go.
A bar/restaurant type of place for these fans would generate income for the club as well as a safe environment.
I hope this triangle is nothing like that one they have in Edinburgh.
2-0 Hamilton, how on earth did that Hearts team knock us out the wee cup?
Blindlemonchitlin,
Peter Capaldi / Armando Ianucci now they are cool names.
Now if you were in a bar and had never met these guys and someone says " do you want to play Peter Capaldi at pool for a tenner" you would decline. He sounds too cool.

MurdochauldandHay: I've never been a great fan of his music, but that's not to say I'm not partial to it now and again. I watched him last night and can honestly say I'm warming to him more and more. Maybe its an age thing, but I'd rather Rod Stewart before Rage Against The Machine nowadays...
What I really like and have always admired about Rod is he has never ever hidden his love for our club, even it meant there was the slightest potential to hurt his sales to those of a less tolerant persuasion.

Celtic have been warned they will lose loan star Landry N'Guemo for the Clydesdale Bank Premier League run-in unless they make his transfer permanent.
Cameroon midfielder N'Guemo joined the Hoops on a season-long loan from Nancy but the French club have revealed there is a deadline of April 30 for the SPL leaders to guarantee they have first option on the 24-year-old.
Nancy sporting director Nicolas Holveck said: "When Landry moved to Celtic on loan, we struck an agreement between the clubs over the fee for a permanent transfer. That option is in place until April 30. After that, he becomes our property and we can decide which club he plays for next season."
According to reports, N'Guemo would cost Celtic in the region of £1.5million.

great to hear the celtic triangle is finally going towards approval. to any doubters who think poilitics will stop this then think logically about what is happening. The area around celtic park HAS to be developed because of the commonwealth games and this area is the respoinsibility of Celtic FC, so the planners will have to approve it. The link that was posted earlier shows that the right people are involved and that celtic have had to get everything spot on prior to submission this friday. approval must surely be a formality now.
Paul67, is this being paid for as part of a general corporate property investment type scheme? or straight out of the clubs coffers?

So Celtic are completely in control of this situation for the best part of 5 months and yet we are "warned!" that he may be spirited away from us in the last few weeks of the season. As if it hasnt occured to anyone.
The real story.Celtic agreed a fee with Nancy before a ball was kicked within an acceptable timeframe.

CELTIC are set to cash in on the 2014 Commonwealth Games by improving the facilities in and around Parkhead, with potential benefits to include a speciallydesignated train station, a club museum and a casino.
The club has been holding discussions with Architecture and Design Scotland, the non-departmental public body funded by the Scottish Government, over outline proposals to redevelop the area around Celtic Park.
As a result, a document (which lists Celtic Football Club as 'client/developer') was drawn up in September and has been issued to Glasgow District Council for their consideration as part of their scheme to regenerate the east end of Glasgow in time for the Games.
'We welcome the fact that Celtic Football Club has engaged in an exercise to develop a masterplan and to integrate future development plans into the City's regeneration strategy,' it reads.
'In combination with the adjacent new National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA), this site has been identified in the East End Local Development Strategy (EELDS) as a key location for the area as well as for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, when Celtic Park will be the venue for the opening ceremony.
'It is clearly vital to create a successful stadium area with attractive public spaces in what is currently a particularly bleak area of the city.
'We welcome the commitment of the football club in producing a masterplan for considerable future investment, with the aim of making a greatly improved environment around this focal point for the east end of Glasgow.' Among the possible benefits to Celtic under discussion is the transformation of the listed London Road School building adjacent to the stadium which, it is hoped, will become a club museum and its 'front of house' building.
Construction of the National Indoor Sports Arena will reduce car and coach parking space at Parkhead but one possible solution being mooted is the reopening of the London Road rail line, with a station dedicated to the football stadium and the new venue.
More controversially, there is also the possibility of a casino being sited close to the stadium.
'While the hotel/casino may be an appropriate use for this gateway location, we are less than convinced that the built form, and the spaces outside this intended landmark, will be attractive,' the document reads.
'The form of this building needs to address the reintroduction of the street frontage on the corner of London Road, as well as the new plaza to its south and east.
'We suggest that further resolution is required, to make this area into a welcoming and distinctive place on both match days and all those in between.'

Apparently it was the Rangers game that cost Babbel his job. A spokesman said today, "Two goals at Ibrox wasn't enough to save Marcus. We expected to score at least four. Everyone else did."

Hi Gordon, my timing of that question on here couldn't have been better and I'm glad that you are around as it was your opinion that I was looking for the most. You are after all THE most Celtic-minded mhan I know and well met mate ;o)))
Look forward to catching a game with you mibees next year some time ?

Interesting article.
I gather that TFOD are due to receive the next slice of income from the sale of Hutton to Spurs BUT they have to pay the next installments for Davis, Mendes & the boogie man - all this in January timeframe.
The debt will grow further.
Gordon,
In the late fifties, I wanted A Celtic strip, but my folks thought that it was too dear.
The Hoops would have cost about £1, buy a plain shirt, about 15s.
I got a green shirt with red sleeves and my brother got an Aberdeen one.
On reflection, my parents were possibly thinking more of our safety than the money.
Gordon
My dad knew Crerand and his family well back then as he also came over from Gweedore to the Gorbals.
He told me that Crerand was called in to see Jimmy McGrory before a game as he was seen in the Granite City the night before a game.
My dad says Crerand was drinking soft drinks and just nipped in to see some pals for an hour.
He didn't play the following day and relations were a bit strained between club and player till he left.
If Crerand had stayed he would have been an all time great.
We used to have one of his match jerseys (that he paid the club for)but it got lost in a house move years ago.
Berwick Law wins by a mere 6 lengths....if only I'd gone in heavier...if only...if only....

For Christmas Day 1955 my mammy had my four sisters scouring Glasgow for a Celtic strip. They couldn't find one, but as a last minute substitute I was bought the full Hibs kit!! All I could do was grin and wear it!
Strips were available then, but obviously difficult to come by.

It was a sad day when Crerand left Celtic.
I was at his last game at Ibrox and in the first half, he was easily Celtic's best player.
Apparently, he and Sean Fallon had a half time bust up.
The good thing about his departure was the emergence of Bobby Murdoch.
As was posted here recently, Bobby had everything that Paddy had, plus a lot more.
If Crerand had stayed at Celtic, we would possibly have been deprived of Murdoch.
I'm just glad to have witnessed both of these lads in a Celtic team.
is this guy on trial with us?

Breaking News from The Auld Scientist page in the National Enquirer.
The area between Edmiston Drive, Broomloan Rd, Woodville St
and Copland Rd is being renamed
The Bermudox Quadrangle.
Whilst everyone now accepts that pound notes entering it are never seen again, it has also been observed that any person entering the quadrangle regresses in time to 1690.
However latest temporal surveys suggest that the process is speeding up. Paddy Power is taking bets that by next April neanderthals will be spotted boarding hairy mammoths at what was Copland Rd Underground Station on their way back from their weekend ritual gathering.
Hopes for saving the area and its occupants are being pinned on tracking down a recluse known as H G Wells using an hour glass and a compass.
The fact that Wells can be found perpetually invading the field of play at the end of a game in The Stadium of Light in Lisbon in May 1967 and is therefore unlikely to have any time for them should not be revealed, lest it deter them.

Here is a question for yourself, Gordon, Oldtim and anyone else who can come up with an answer; did Pat Crerand and Bobby Murdoch ever actually play together for Celtic?
Gordon:
Loved the hooped socks you mention. I also really loved the baggy nets they had in the 60's. the way they bulged when the ball went in. I think they didn't want to use tight nets for fear that Tommy Gemmel would burst them!!! Bring back the baggy nets I say.
Paul
Love it - "while being completely void of speculative bouts of vanity, which hindered earlier stadium-vicinity redevelopment projects in Glasgow."
Kick them when they're down.
Celtic Mac
Bobby Murdoch made his first team debut in August 1962. Paddy Crerand left Celtic during February 1963 so there's a good chance they did play together, but I don't recall seeing them in the same team - too far back
pablophanque/thomthethim/allgreen/CD...
I am sure that Roberts Stores in Argyle Street was the place to go to buy the sacred hoops.
Paddy Crerand used to live in Crown Street in the Gorbals, just up the road from me.
Our boys guild, St Luke's, used to hold an annual competetion, The Pat Crerand trophy in his honour.
That 4-0 gubbing on a frozen Ibrox pitch at New Year '63 was his last in the hoops.
PS Pablo... it would be good to meet up.
Just made a wee filum fur ma Bhoy. I used a head shot picture I've got of him and the way they work it in to this "thing" is brilyunt !!!
Give it a go !

Mr Pablo Fanques
I sent you mail. Can you check if you wish more and can recieve them (big capacity) ?
Both Pat Crerand and Bobby Murdoch played in the match at Ibrox on 1st January 1963 when the Bhoys lost 4-0.
They had also played three days previously at Celtic Park in a 2-1 win over Falkirk. I counted 10 times that they played together in league games in 1962-3.
(The Celtic Football Companion-1986 by David Docherty)
Celtic Mac
I remember that Bobby originally played the old 'inside right' position while Paddy was 'right half'. There's every possibility that the did play together - one for the internet I think.
Gordon,
I got my first set of hoops in Roberts, many years ago now.
In those days they weren't truly replica strips - they didn't have club badges. You just bought a red top or a blue top or whatever. Of course the hoops could only be Celtic.
Sometime later (mid - late 70s?) they started selling club crests which you had to persuade your mum to sew on!
Bobby Evans Superstar @ 4:07...
Bobby & Pat both played and scored in the Glasgow Cup replay at Celtic Park in November 1962.
We won 3-2 (the first game at Ibrox was drawn 2-2).
It was played during the afternoon on a very foggy day.
Someone asked on here a few months ago why the game was played in the afternoon and I cannot recall the reason.

Expert financial analysis from the Sky commentary team.
Martin Tyler: 'Everton were in the news this week as they revealed losses of £6.7m for the last financial year'
Andy Gray: 'That's not bad is it? You hear so much about these clubs that have hundreds of millions in losses'
Martin Tyler: 'It's losses and debts, and I think there's a difference'
Andy Gray: 'Mmm, aye'
Gordon
If I recall correctly - Paddy Crerand spoke out after the 4-0 game and that's what turned the board against him and had him shipped out. He didn't want to go, but had no choice. He wore his heart on his sleeve.
Mr Z, worked a treat mate. Cheers (thumbsup)

I think that Paddy had an argument with Sean Fallon -at half time -in that 4-0 defeat at Ibrox.

Don't stir! I'm enjoying the sudden outbreak of a feel good factor.
Oh, and Boyd is a better goalscorer than Larsson too?
i got a celtic strip in about 60/62 - it came in a cardboard box with a cellophane front. It was from Umbro and came with shirts and socks. i think they only produced them for boys and youths.

I just get fed up with the so called supporters of our club not looking at the bigger picture mate.
We were absolutely fantastic yesterday. Total football. A joy to watch.
vancelticbhoy - Of course it was mate .But I think we should be striving to emulate that kind of football now and in the future and not dwell like the English do in past achievments too much. I just think the board try to milk our past successes as a way fleecing us more .Saying that I did and do still love the Lisbon Lions 40th anniversary home top lol Cant stand the V- Neck home top we wear now ,think I've worn it once! . I know times have changed and football has changed since then ,but I always want Celtic to strive to they dizzy heights again in my lifetime. The EUFA cup final was the closest I've come to watching Celtic achieving a smimilar feat.I'm greedy and want us to actually win it or the European Cup soon :) Its ok to dream innit ? ;)

Mr Z- I don't know if you've heard this but there is a film coming out next year on the Kinks; in particular on the often corrosive relationship between the Davies' brothers.

What a complete waste of time and money that was.

i would put myself in the happy clapper camp if any - but just as a couple of poor performances doesnt make us a poor team - a couple of wins doesnt make us a great one. having said that yesterdays performance was exceptional - we played with patience at first but when we got the upper hand we pressed home our advantage. I was especially pleased with our speed of play and final ball.

There are no guarantees however the manager must be given time and resources.
It was an excellent team performance yesterday.

I have about 350 CD’s. 80 percent of them are from late 60ties or 70ties. I was a baby then. New music is rubbish. I have no time for searching for something good. My new choices are World music and Jazz.
By the way. Yesterday I bought DVD pack with Led Zep. Never thought it was that great. Four best musicians have met in one place in the same time. DVD records are better CD recordings.

To be fair. DD generally only posts during office hours, or is it school hours.:>)
On Bobby Murdoch.
Bobby was only an average inside forward. I think it was because the inside forward played a lot with his back to goal.
When he stepped back to right half, he had the game in front of him, where he could use his majestic stride and vision to dominate a game.
A true great and a lovely man.
Mac1888 thanks for that but now in English.....lol...cheers i'll try that. Honestly I like listening to what his wife has to say.....Honest
Yesterday was much much better and more like the type of display that we should expect week in and week out
The pass that Crosas played to Hinkel was excellent and the type of pass that WGS would not have tolerated since it was a rsik in the sense that a square pass would have been more likely to retain possession !
I remember Donatti getting pelters from WGS in a cup tie against a ower league team for trying something similiar and we all know that if you didn't play the way WGS wanted you didn't play !
So well done TM and the lads !
However lets be honest as well - we need to see such performances on a regular basis until the league has been won before we go overboard
The sending off also helped but at least we showed real appetite for the game
We need to see that when we play away from CP as well !

Sorry Ghuys and Ghirls, but the following is just too much fun not to repost. First up, The Herald, with an indepth interview with Rangers' 'only show in town'. I give you Graham Duffy;
Would-be saviour of Rangers answers the big questions
Simon Bain
Published The Herald on 4 Dec 2009
Graham Duffy is the US-based property investor who is offering to lead a fan-based buy-out of Rangers Football Club.
In 2001, The Herald revealed how Duffy and his family were bankrupted and evicted from their home after being sequestrated by the Clydesdale Bank.
Eight years on, in an exclusive interview with Simon Bain, Duffy answers the questions surrounding his mysterious business empire.
Q. Fans are asking ‘where have you made your money’, and why they can’t find any information on the internet about your Bahamas company or your major developments.
A. Just as it was a very public affair when I initially lost my wealth, it is now becoming a public affair as to how I regained it.
I was aware that there was a severe financial correction on the horizon in 2006 and at that time decided to move my personal and professional interests, divest of property and leave the UK.
I strategically moved my business affairs to the Bahamas to legally permit global trading. Bahamian law protects the interests of shareholders and directors and this information is not for public consumption.
I appreciate that there are certain projects on the Grantly website that no longer exist and are no longer being pursued. The website has not yet been updated as the company is at this time being re-branded by a firm in Dallas.
My involvement in business is diversified, investing in alternate health, innovative product manufacturing, property, art, as well as other business opportunities – all the eggs are not in one basket.
Q. What is your Bahamas empire Grantly International Property (Holdings) Limited involved in, what is the current market valuation of these projects, and to what extent has your portfolio escaped the downturn?
A. Grantly has prospered significantly since it was relocated and has been active in European and US markets. Last year we offered $50m cash to purchase unissued stock in a company that was midway through a resort development in Central Florida, on top of replacing a further $130m of their expensive debt. We own substantial beachfront property in the Bahamas next to the Westin, which is debt-free and unencumbered, with a development value of more than $1bn. We suspended this development due to the current climate, with the luxury of no financial indebtedness.
We do intend revisiting these proposals over the next 12 months, although we have decided to redesign the development in entirety. This is only one of a number of Bahamian developments we have. We have completed the contract to purchase a 4,000-acre ski resort in Clysburg, Pennsylvania, which has been voted the number one resort on the US eastern seaboard for four years in a row. Again this is a significant development and, when complete, will have in excess of $1bn of value. We have acquired the shareholding of a significant property company in Iowa and are currently working on trebling the portfolio from 500 units to 1,500 units, as well as developing its
commercial portfolio.
Grantly is in the process of completing the acquisition of 20 residential sites in the UK to add to its property portfolio, which is valued at more than £100m, and we have a retail project about to complete in Berlin this month, with a value of £50m.
Too many companies and individuals over-extended themselves, and it was inevitable there would be a devastating correction. The very public litigation between my then partner, myself and the Clydesdale Bank, taught me the greatest lesson ever: be cautious and be prudent. I can honestly state that Grantly has been pretty immune from the recession due to the fact that our companies are all debt free and have retained their assets.
Q. What other interests do you have, how much are they worth and in what areas are you currently looking?
A. Due to the current financial crisis it became evident the property markets would take a significant time to readjust. In the intervening period, I was fortunate enough to be associated with a number of innovative entrepreneurs, which led us down a path into manufacturing.
We subsequently formed Global Hybrid Roofing Solutions, spent 14 months acquiring the intellectual property rights for its environmental roofing products, and invested millions of dollars incorporating and branding the company. We were offered $45m cash in New York a few months ago in return for a small equity stake in the company, pretty impressive for a company less than nine months old at the time – but we turned the offer down.
Since then we have enticed some of the best chemists in the world into our material supply division. We also moved into renewable energy and were in the market to purchase a windfarm recently acquired by Guy Hands of Terra Firma for $400m. We are in the process of constructing our own wind farm for $ 20m. Again this was down to caution and prudence. I personally completed a transaction to buy Iolife, an alternative health company based in Copenhagen.
Q. How have you funded growth, what sort of structures have you used, and do you have debt or equity backers?
A. All Grantly and Global Hybrid companies are debt- free, solely funded by the shareholders. We have had approaches by hedge funds to invest in many of our opportunities but we have stayed the course on our plans and model. We appreciate we will have to bring in joint venture partners as some of our
proposals come on line.
I entered into a “participation debenture investment” with a US-based merchant bank, and at the last minute it collapsed due to the markets. I personally lost $700m, but I still retained 100% debt free ownership of the company, which has been secured by caution and prudence.
Q. The Grantly website lists around a dozen UK companies. Many of them are, apparently, overdue for Companies House filing and one, Grantly Commercial, is said to be owing money to HMRC so unable to be struck off for non-filing. There is also a proposal to strike off Grantly Developments (Scotland). One businessman sums up the public information as a “string of insolvencies, dissolutions and breaches of the Companies Act in the Grantly Group” and says this makes it difficult for fans to trust you. Any comment?
A. Anything with a resemblance of being associated to me is being put under the microscope.
Some of the companies I dissolved as they were special purpose vehicles that did not proceed, in some of them I sold the entire shareholding and have had no involvement for years.
Yes, a couple are late with some information, however this responsibility was passed to other directors and officers of the company.
As far as I am concerned this kind of interest is more “mischievous” than the intentions of exiled Florida millionaires.
Following which scoop, Tom English in today's Scotland on Sunday;
Tom English: 'We've got money, truckloads of it, but we won't be investing, no'
Published Date: 06 December 2009
WE ARE joined today by a man who wishes to remain anonymous, but certain things about him we can reveal. He's a Govan man, a lifelong Rangers fan who emigrated to South America at the age of 21, who arrived in Venezuela with barely a backside in his trousers and a couple of quid in his pocket. He slept rough on the streets of San Cristobal for six months, protected from the winter rains by nothing more than a Rangers beach towel and a T-shirt with a picture of Jim Baxter on the front.
The locals found him curious. Who are these Rangers? they asked. Are
they big like Estrella Roja and Real Espor? Not as big as FC Venezolano, surely? Bigger, you say?
He moved to the capital city inside a year and started flogging things down the
ADVERTISEMENT
market. He got into leather goods and wood products and rubber and cement. An empire was created. There is no telling what his personal wealth is, but it's estimated by the Venezuelan Rich List as quite a lot. He looks a bit like that Neil Oliver bloke off the telly, only a little scarier, but don't be fooled by his appearance. He is here today to announce his interest in investing in Rangers in their time of trouble. Good Teddy Bears, we give you the billionaire Latino-Glaswegian we can only refer to as Tommy Caracas.
"Tommy, you're not doing this for personal gain, isn't that right?"
"Aye, true. I cannae stand to see Rangers like this. We're launching a takeover, myself and others and, of course, the fans. It's all for the fans."
"Yourself and others. Care to expand?"
"Och, no. That's a secret."
"But you've spoken to Lloyds Bank?"
"No."
"Sir David Murray?"
"Who?"
"Alastair Johnston?"
"We've spoken to a reporter or two. That's about it just now."
"You've got money to invest, though?"
"We've got money, truckloads of it, but we won't be investing, no."
"What, nothing?"
"We'll underwrite things. We'll take a few of these new membership things. I've already invested in Rangers. A right few bob, but I'm not prepared to tell you how much. Mostly we'll develop the brand, we'll exploit the global magnificence of Rangers Football Club and restore it to greatness. Aye, there's all sorts that can be done. As soon as we get 45,000 punters coughing up a grand apiece we'll be laughing. The bank will be off our case, the supporters will have the club they deserve and we'll be simply the best forever more."
"So the money raised from the fans will go to paying off the debt?"
"You're getting technical now."
"Well, explain how it's going to be?"
"It's gonna be great."
"What about the detail, though?"
"I want what's best for Rangers. Isn't that enough to be getting on with? I have a group of men behind me. We have minor disagreements on some issues, but we're progressing things. We have a road map."
"Disagreements? Already?"
"Aye, nothing major. The boys would go public, only they don't want to. I'm only speaking now because, well, you asked me to. This is not about the glorification of Tommy Caracas. This is about Rangers. I mean, just as soon as I save Rangers I'm happy to slip away quietly into the background. The wife says I should be given a standing ovation at Ibrox and maybe a statue and perhaps a stand named after me, but that's for other people to decide. I've no say in that."
"What about funds for the manager for new players."
"Aye."
"Will there be any?"
"Look, we're stinking rich, but the plan is not an open chequebook. We'll have to look at what's available. But I said before, we need to do something about our youth development. I mean, look at Barcelona."
"What about them?"
"They go over to Argentina, find a 13-year-old off the street, bring him back to Spain and turn him into Lionel Messi. Why can't we do that?"
"How much did Barcelona spend in turning Messi into a superstar?"
"Dunno."
"Housing him, feeding him, flying his family over to Barcelona, flying him home, educating him, nurturing him. How much?"
"You have me there."
"More than Rangers can afford."
"Aye, maybe. But it's just an illustration of what I'm saying. We need blue-sky thinking. We're a global brand and we need to act as such. There's a big world out there and there must be a trillion Rangers fans, at least. We have to tap into that."
"But you're not intending to put in, say, £20 million of your own money, like Dave King did? Just to get the ball rolling, just to show that you mean business and that you're not the chancer some people think you are."
"I'm not sure I know of anyone who keeps that kind of cash in the bank. It's all tied up, you know what I mean? I have interests all over the gaffe."
"You have businesses all over Venezuela?"
"Aye. I have a cement company in Carabobo that employs 15,000 people. I have a leather factory in Bolivar that's banging out quality gear. I own a wooden mill in Puerto La Cruz that's just massive. It turned over £300m last year alone. I was evicted from my home in Caracas a few years ago. I was out the game, big man. But look at me now!"
"There's some debate about a few of your companies, though."
"Oh aye, here we go. The negativity is coming now."
"Some of them have been liquidated, have they not?"
"Typical Scottish attitude. Hammer the success story. I hate cynicism."
"A few companies in your empire have failed to file tax returns, is that not true?"
"Look, there are certain firms in my portfolio that don't exist any longer, aye. We haven't taken them off our website yet. I'm into all sorts of things. It's hard to keep it all up to date sometimes. We're recession proof, us."
"But what about the string of insolvencies, dissolutions and breaches of the Companies Act. How can the fans trust you're bona fide?"
"Not my fault, I'm telling you. It's mischievous gossip, that's all. Responsibility for filing tax returns was passed to other directors. I can't say anymore."
"So what happens now?"
"We'll press on with putting the plan together."
"Thank you, Mr Caracas."
"Cheers, pal. Gonnae drop me a G-note to kick things off."
"No."
Glen Gibbons
FOR all Scottish football's present ills, a phenomenon was witnessed in midweek which would have all but one or two of England's Premier League clubs – the exceptions would be Manchester United and, possibly, Liverpool – looking north with envy.
It occurred at Celtic Park, where 35,010 watched Tony Mowbray's harassed side play Hapoel Tel-Aviv in the penultimate match of their Europa League Group C series. Curiously, the crowd was viewed by most observers in this country as a certain sign of dwindling interest among Parkhead fans.
Compared to the 60,000 capacity turn-outs for Champions League matches in recent years, the diminishing numbers are undeniable. But it is those earlier figures that are freakish, produced as they have been by a club in one of Europe's smallest countries from a city with a population of 620,000. In similar circumstances to those faced by Celtic on Wednesday – a dead rubber against largely unappealing opponents – the biggest clubs in Italy would have struggled to reach five figures.
A poor Celtic team made the second-biggest crowd in Europe.

Too right it does mate. I really enjoyed seeing the the celebrations of the players when we scored. The 10 outfield players all congratulated each other and the goalscorer. It showed a togetherness and the fans really got behind the team. Long may it continue!!

I can't remember why the November '62 game was played in the afternoon either, but I do recall that the police, at that time, were never keen on Celtic v Rangers games being played at night.

And Caldwell's three 50yard raking passes, all delivered with precision.
We used to get the train from High Possil to Parkhead.
In the winter, pre floodlights, there was often a fog that descended around 4.30pm, on frosty evenings.
The football special train would sit at the station, waiting for it's passengers and would be billowing out smoke.
This smoke, mixing with the gathering smog would slowly creep onto the pitch from the side of the Jungle at the Celtic end.
This resulted in a race against the clock for the game not to be abandoned.
Exciting times!!
Awe Naw -
Excellent! Always been a glass half full man myself.
Only downside at the moment is I now think it pertty certain the stadium capacity will ever be increased, bringing the main stand up to the level of the others.
AT least we have a big enough stadium to have 25,000 empty seats. Wouldn't surprise me if Rangers fans argued they are better supported because they'd only have had 15,000 empty seats for the same game...
It's been a great weekend.

yes it was a good place to spend a saturday afternoon yesterday.you could see Sammi and marc's confidence grow as the game went on yesterday.both young players who we havent found out how good they can be.also Aiden's commitment and skill is a joy.
finally glad TM has stopped giving the press his rentaquote moments after games.
Kate O Mara was in Triangle
What a waste of the licence fee that was
But the Loveley Kate wasnt:0

If that had been Gerrard or Lampard that had made those passes the press would be raving about them. Personally I thought Caldwell was excellent yesterday too.
celikbhoy87 - Exactly, all young players with bags of potential.

keep Sammi fit and get him on the ball and I honestly feel he will be awesome this season. The vision of Crosas is excellent. I have never doubted Aiden McGeady. Watching him in full flow is magic.
0-2 Spurs, good to see a defender fail in his attempt to hold the goal scorer back.
I wonder if all those `supporters` who wanted Martinez and Moyes still feel the same?
Mac188 and sean
we need to give these guys every encouragement especially when they try something a bit different or difficult and it doesnt come off.
on Aiden when he blocked a clearence from Mulgrew yesterday then kept the ball in followed by a trick then Mulgrew had rash challenge resulting in a booking was priceless.also meant Mulgrew could no longer foul Aiden.all because of Aiden's commitment.
GordonJ :- Your memory is correct, Celtic started wearing the club crest on their shirts in 1977, the crest was worn in the center of the shirt.
seanbhoy69 - I cant see a manager younger than Davie Weir commanding much respect in the dressing room ,(no matter what nationality) FFS he played for Murderwell lol , and I've never been impressed with Moyes ,even though he looks like Murphy from Robocop :) we played badly against Arsenal but his team got hammered the week or weekend after our game by them .
celikbhoy87
Its a confidence thing.
I agree that we should give them all the encouragement that we can.
Yes they will make mistakes but lets not get on their backs when they do.
We all just want to see Celtic win and if we can do it with style and panache it makes it so much better. There is nothing better than watching Celtic `putting on the style`.
seanbhoy69
The number of posts since yesterday's game expressing similar thoughts as yours there is great to here, Man.
There have been a few lows, let's enjoy the highs when we get them, eh?
BiddulphBhoy :- I got my first Rangers strip around the same time, as you say you got the complete strip (in my case blue jersey with white V neck, white shorts, black and red topped socks. Later strips tended to be just the top, with the shirt and socks (and as GordonJ pointed out the badge) having to be bought separately
As a matter of interest, can anyone say when adult replica tops first came out?

Agreed mate.
I honestly feel there is a lot more to come from Celtic this season. Well I hope and pray that will be the case.
Spurs seem to have responded well after the footballing lesson we gave them back in the glory days of the Wembley Cup.
Seven of their starting eleven today played in our reserves 2-0 win.

Any venture which will make Celticoney in the long term is a venture well worth pursuing. Hopefully, it will be profitable.
Seanbhoy69
Agreed a thoroughly good performance yesterday, although the sight of Aberdeen playing a high-line against us in the first half was a bit worrying, as firstly, they must think we are so slow up front, and secondly we appeared confused for most of the first half as to what to do about it.
The goal exploited the Dons formation weakness and the half-time cuppa, team talk (plus the Dons got tired very quickly chasing us around) resulted in a much better second half.
N;guemo man of the match by the length of the newly developed London Road, he needs to be signed now, his breaking up of the play and surging runs in the second half knackered up the Dons pre-game tactics.
Thw only obvious downside from yesterday is that Sammi and Skippy are truely useless at closing the opposition down and take up stupid positions when they do not have the ball, N'guemo more often than not was telling them were to stand etc..skippy's ball control was once again yesterday hopeless
A true reflection would have been a 5-0 doing, still mustn't grumble.....we do need to find a better way to deal with high balls in to the box on tight away pitches....possibly greater pressure on the man on the ball would be a start.....at least BTM has worked out that if Robbo plays he needs to be wide out the way of the main engine room.
Main thought leaving the game yesterday, would you put Broony vack in the starting 11 or would you take the money.........at the moment I would take the money
WGS, Celticserioph, Arcytic, Mr Z
Any transfer tattle? Where is Len Brennan!

greenlion2 - More chance of that than the huns winning the league this season ;)
SeanBhoy69 :- I hope you enjoy watching the celebrations while you can. (though not too often lol) It's starting to look like if the idiots at the SFA get their way celebrating a goal will be a hanging offence.

As I said... Interesting Proposal...
During very very interesting Financial Times.
The number of unattributed laptop loyal articles related to Rangers financial plight and their AGM has gone through the roof this Sunday. I do wonder how this operates ? When do the Mafia for the mediocre decide to attribute names or not. Is it the journalist himself. His Editor. A combination of both or are they requested it from above ... I mean below. Any which way you look at it it´s good news.
We have Alison McConnell being brave enough to put her head above the parapet to ask some searching questions but blows it all away with her last two question and sentences in her article
"What will be the plans of an investor when it comes to the playing staff? Will funds be made available to strengthen the team?
For a so called journalist it makes pretty grim reading. There is no investor. As a journalist you would think she has that one bolted to the floor but no denial rears its ugly head and she asks that those who are looking for an investor make this phantom investors plans clear ? How easily manipulated are these gimps ?
I hope she doesn´t attend greeting wimmin are always a sight for sore eyes.
The last time Alistair Johnson came to our screens he was spinning so fast he was emanating nuclear magnetic resonance. I hope there are a few Geiger counters at their AGM tomorrow. As the EPL has firmly shut its door on the Old Firm and I do not think Johnsons assertions last time around helped the situation. He either has to come up with the news of a new investor or he will be left the only thing that is left to spin. The auspice of the Atlantic league.
There is nothing else on the table left to offer. Tomorrows Evening Times will be trumpeting the imminent arrival of the Atlantic league coupled with the lie that Rangers DONT NEED TO SELL ANYBODY this January.
And guess what raised it´s head in the press again today ? The SOS. The same paper that rebutted the Darrel King wet dream last weekend.
""UEFA are looking at capping wages at the biggest clubs but they should be trying to help the big clubs in smaller countries to try and raise their level of income because right now it's cut-throat: it really is," Cardihun said. "At the moment the money's there if you can get into the Champions League but that just encourages people to speculate and then get into enormous financial difficulties. That's why there is a call for a European League. It's so that clubs like ourselves can generate enough income to be better able to compete with the really big clubs.
""Scottish clubs are caught up in this because if we invest and then don't qualify then it can lead to serious problems. Our own financial situation has been well documented but there will be a dozen other clubs in small countries who are in a similar, if not worse, position than us."
""Since everything is driven by TV money then surely there would be an audience for a European League comprised of clubs from outside England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany. Rangers and Celtic, as the two biggest clubs, would leave the Scottish set-up to enter the new competition. However, there could still be an incentive for the clubs left behind.
"If Aberdeen, say, won the Scottish League they could then have a play-off against ourselves or Celtic – depending on which club finished lowest – for a place in the new league. There has to be an avenue for the other Scottish clubs to get into that European League so that would give them an incentive to invest in their own squads."
The plan is obvious to me and that is to keep the paying bear public on side by keeping them dumb. Shouldn´t be difficult until MIH opens up it books at the end of April. Much against Lloyds wishes I would reckon. It has the hallmarks of Sir Minty all over it.
Hail Hail

btw ...Gareth Bale is utter cack
Celikbhoy87 :- Thanks for the reply. If that is the case then fair enough, it would be covered within the longstanding rules of the game I watched the game on the telly and all it showed was him showing his belly in reply to the Falkirk fans taunting about his weight.
This was also the line carried by most of the press, hence my annoyance.
I have posted on a tangential point to this before and not just about Rangers players, I think it's ridiculous that crowds spend 90 min taunting oppossing players with filth and obcenities, sometimes about the players families and then act all shocked and claim their innocent minds are outraged if a player says something or gestures back.
Yesterday Lampard, today Defoe.
Good to know England's players haven't lost their knack for entertaining us with their penalties.

Celikbhoy :- I ham no problems with taunting or maybe it could be called abusing players from the opposition, if it helps distract them from the game for a second then I feel I'm helping my team. What I don't like is when race and/or religion come into it.
As far as the two players you mention go I have taken part in chanting at one about his weight "You fat "£$%^" at the other when he was near the touchline hoping that he would hear me letting him know I thought he was an "ugly torn faced wee "£$%&^"
What I wouldn't do in those cases is mention either players race or religion.
I'm not making myself out to be some kind of angel, on recent disagreement I had on here was over the "Nakamura ate my dog" song a song that I'm sure will make a comeback with a name change in Jan when your new player starts playing.
Some folk on here thought it racist, I thought it was more along the lines of singing to Aberdeen fans or Mr Hartson about their love life with sheep.
Solvi Ottenson attracting interest from German and EPL clubs.

If Boyd only flashed his belly the booking was wrong IMO.
Too many fans get all precious when a player reacts to dog's abuse. The problem for me with Boyd yesterday was the way the phone in presenters all backed him up.
You would have thought this had never happened on a pitch before.
I remember the same presenters all having a go at Boruc for applauding the Hibs fans and Lennon with Rangers fans.
If fans give someone pelters they shouldn't get a petted lip if it goes wrong.
When Sebo was playing for Rangers I was always in a panic he would score because there was a bloke who was probably entitled to moon at the Celtic support with a cigar up his backside and a Union Jack painted on.

Twardzik Bhoys on target as Celts win 6-0
Celtic's u-19 side put in a great professional performance today to beat Brora Rangers 6-0 and win a place in the last eight of the SFA Youth Cup.
The Highland League side had a difficult afternoon as Stevie Frail's side bounced back from their only defeat of the season last week when they lost 2-1 away to Dundee United.
In truth the margin of victory should have been greater with Celtic failing to convert their first half superiority into goals with only strikes from Declan Gallagher and Jordan Lowdon separating the sides at the interval.
Two quick goals at the start of the second half from Lowdon and Filip Twardzik put the tie beyond doubt with Patrik Twardzik and substitute Johny Marsden completing the scoring in the last ten minutes.
Despite putting the game well beyond Brora, Celtic never let up with their controlled passing game troubling their opponents throughout.
Right-back Richie Towel put in a power of work up and down the right flank where he supported Patrik Twardzik with Brora offering little in an attacking sense.
"It was a pleasing win after the disappointment of losing last week," admitted Frail. "It was good to get over that and to score six goals.
"Fair play to Brora, they stuck at it, but it was obviously a step up in class for them. We were hoping for more goals but they worked hard to keep the score down.
ATTITUDE
"The big thing today was attitude and the players were spot on. They enjoyed themselves, we expect them to work hard, they did that and did well on the ball from first whistle to last.
Frail added: "To be brutally honest we were a bit disappointed to be just two up at half-time, we had chances to be further ahead if we had played a little bit better. We're satisfied but there is always room for improvement.
"Jordan (Lowdon) did well with his two goals, it's been difficult for him to break into the team because they players that are in have been doing well.
"I felt that he got better and stronger as the game went on which is pleasing for him.
"We need to have depth and players to come in, we have had a few injuries with James Forest and Callum Bagshaw out."
Without going overboard the quality of football being produced by the u-19s is very encouraging.
All of the players are comfortable on the ball, they pass and turn with ease, control the ball with their first touch and have a good grasp of the basic skills.
Developing youths with potential into first-team players is the task for everyone at Celtic.
The drop out rate for players between the ages of 17 and 21 is terrifying but the level of skill and resources currently spent on development has never been higher.
CONTRIBUTION
Only Aiden McGeady, Stephen McManus and Shaun Maloney have come through the ranks in the last decade to make a serious contribution to Celtic although others have made an impact before moving on elsewhere.
Pushing through a batch of players ready to win in Scotland and compete in the Champions League is very demanding but Frail and the coaching team won't compromise their demands and beliefs.
Frail added: "We have to win games, make no mistake about that, we don't apologise about that but we have to do that with a style.
"That's the way that Celtic teams have won in the past. We have to develop players and be winning, players have to step up into the reserves and be ready to do the job required.
"We're reasonably happy with how the season has gone so far."
Next Saturday the u-19's face St Mirren at home in the league before stopping for a winter break with another home match against Aberdeen.
CELTIC: Kennedy; Towell, G Gallagher, D Gallagher, Brennan; F Twardzik (McDonnell 69), Santonocito, Lowdon; Keatings (Ordish 59), Spence (Marsden 59), P Twardzik. SUBS: Witeman, Jones
It seems people are getting a bit excited about Rangers penalty kick taker getting close to Henrik Larssons SPL scoring record. Seems convenient that the name of the league is now the important thing in historical records.
The fat traitor is on 151 and they say he is 7 behind Henrik who scored 221 league goals for us, 35 in the Premier Division, 186 in the SPL.

I am delighted to see that Celtic are involved in such a project.
We will need to maximise all forms of income in the near future.
One element of yesterdays match totally deflated me .
To my knowledge, for the first time since the new stadium was built there were FIVE corporate boxes in the North stand totally closed .Shutters down.Nada.
This quite alarming and well out of sync with the credit crunch.
I hear the attendance yesterday was reported as 56,000.
There is no way 56,000 actually attended the match.
The board must surely be aware if the team plays well and is winning, then we sell more tickets.
You know that i am a fan of how well the board have run us up to date.
I have lost a bit of faith lately.
£10 million has been invested in the Tony Mowbray era so far.
If this proves a waste then the board have only themselves to blame.
I hope i never see the "Shutters down " during an SPL match ever again.

Bloke_109
Your right, its 174 league goals, 16 in the Premier Division, 158 in the SPL.
The fat striker in his 10th season in the SPL with 3 european goals to his name needs 23 goals to equal Henrik Larssons tally during the magnificent 7 years he was here. Dont think he will do it before he is sold.

Vmhan Im not bored. Im fed up with DD. I think ive asked DD this type of question a few time before this is the first he has answered.
For all the failings we have at board level this is not a board to go to the car park over.
DD you say downsizing what would your strategy be apart from playing the Irish national team. You could say we overschieved in 5 years with a plan that was based on us going to the EPL which did not happen. The board re-evaluated what was happening. So did MoN.
Pauls article is showing we have a business plan ahead which will help support the club. Please take the floor and tell me apart from asking our major shareholder to take it out his pocket what you would do. Your plan is not to give them money the last I read.

A few years ago I was on holiday with Mrs biddulph travelling from Rome to Florence by train. It was on a matchday when Roma were playing Bologna and the train was full of Roma supporters. It took me back to supporters specials in the 60/70s. I got talking to a Roma supporter - the gist of which was that he said we were lucky it wasnt a Lazio travelling support.
i must admit i found the Roma lads very well behaved.

Losing to the huns?
The huns still being able to compete even though they are on their knees financially?
Fans leaving in their thousands?
Lack of quality on the pitch?

Boyd may be getting close to Henrik in goals scored in the SPL, but so what?
Let's not mention how many were dodgy penalties, tap ins or offside. Let's not mention how many were scored against the bottom teams in the league. And let's not even mention the low number scored in Glasgow derbies.
Because however many goals he scores, Kris Boyd will never be one tenth of the all round, complete football player that Henrik Larsson was.
It's like arguing that some crappy reality show manufactured band produced better music than Beethoven based on cd sales.

In my opinion comparing Boyd to Henrik is like comparing accrington stanley to barcelona and asking which is a bigger club??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One was a footballing genius who played for Celtic, Man U and Barca and the other is a very good SPL goalscorer particularly against the bottom 6 SPL teams!

Are you suggesting that Celtic spends more in 2010 than it has done on average in the past few seasons ?
Where is the cash going to come from ?
We will not sell so many season books regardless of if we buy 2 or 3 middle of the road Championship level players or not....
Beating Rangers by 10 or 2 points will not sell any more season books either.
We will not get bigger sponsorship deals next season than this.
We will not sell more boxes or corporate seats next year than this either....if we have 3,4, or 5 middle of the road players which we could stretch ourselves to sign.We could not compete with top EPL for the players who would make a difference.
No top player or manager, for that sake, would come to Celtic right now unless for a lot more than the going rate.
A 3rd rate football country going backwards with a consumer base who spend a very high % of their earnings on the club and who demand much more than is realistic from the club's potential income.
Getting behind a group of players who are doing their best and making sure we are aligned to win well domestically (like yesterday) is the limit of our realistic ambition.
Our poor Euro co eff will also limit potential (barring a lucky draw) to progress in CL or Europa from next year.
I think you need a reality check on things.....painful as all of the above is for any of us to accept......Celtic are downsizing because there is no alternative....the unfortunate thing is that the board who you criticise have not done anything to address the strong 'headwinds' which the club faces....whilst feathering their nests from running a very good 'corner shop' year to year....a bit better than previous 'shoe box' but a long way from a 'blue chip' corporation. I cannot accept your statements that downsizing is the only option. Boruc - european class keeper - signed from eastern european market. Caldwell - lower half spl defender - signed from spl. IF the board showed a degree of class in getting in a management team with knowledge of markets beyond the spl and championship, Boruc himself has shown we do not need to downsize to the same extent. There will undoubtedly be a player on the way up in eastern europe and other markets better than most players in each position in our first eleven and without question better than hibs centre halfs and championship players. Your views are the boards dream, passive acceptance. All I want is some ambition and lateral thinking. And yes I would return to CP if I saw it, I know many others who would so we would sell more season books and everything else that comes with that. And markets like eastern europe as Boruc proved do not require a vast financial outlay.
Finally I do not for a second buy the John Reid argument that we cant sign non EU payers due to immigration laws. Whilst this is true to an extent it is not a fully preventing barrier. The requirement to get a w.p is show that a player will make a material positive difference to the profession he was in. We managed to convince the immigration authorities Koki Mizuno could do that for goodness sake, it is not THAT hard to get in foreign talent.
The Board have other options, they'd just rather downsize and take their guaranteed buck off the 35-40,000 fans who go no matter how bad we are and say fans like me who care enough to vote for change with our feet that we are not fans. Shameful from the board.

Anyway, off out. No doubt trade some further mild mannered posts with you in the coming days.
Tiny Tim - I am no expert on these matters and would not care to be, however, I think the empty corporates are indeed a sign of the times. First thing to go for a lot of companies has to be the fringe luxuries which are nice but not necessarily necessary to the business.
Business as I understand it, has to pull the horns in a wee bit. corporate wining and dining can be a little tasteless when jobs are being cut and even greedy bankers and employers understand that.
Perhaps though, in these times, Celtic should be looking to market these facilities differently. birthday parties, Christmas works day out, hens, stags all at less than the business world would normally pay of course.

I'm not sure that someone who actively supports Celtic on the road but doesn't go to Celtic Park is any worse than the thousands of Celtic Park attendees who sit in sullen silence at every home game.
Is the feeling of dissilusionment from the board maybe caused by , high prices, low return into the team, poor results, and an apparent lack of ambition.
Im not too fussed to be honest, although my mate, a villa fan, pays approx £400 per year, and they are complaining its too high.
I do think our prices are far too high though.
So many of our fans are earning approx 12-13k per year, yet expected to hand out £500+ (approx 4% of there yearly earnings) for football, feels like our family club could be more family focused.

To show the suits we're not mere turnstyle fodder. To show that we will not stand for downsizing which places us in the position whereby a financially crippled hun team, Hibernian and Dundee Utd can challenge us for the SPL title.
With the resources we've had at our disposal we should be light years ahead of them all wouldn't you agree?

Naka, Petrov, Boruc, Di Canio, Viduka, Larsson, Lubo, Zaluska (Potentially) van hoojidonk, cadete to name but a few.
All of these players were reasonably modest outlays in terms of transfer fees yet provided either a healthy profit on their sale or value for money or both!!!!!!!!!
The Point I'm making here is, if our scouting system was world class then there would be no real need for 6 million pound signings!!
I know Celtic have revamped their scouting system over last 1 - 2 years and hopefully they will reap the benefits in the next few years but they have been so re active instead of proactive re their scouting that its infuriating!!

Hey you......
Hoops1990-so your demands are to be met before you return to CP? As much as I respect your opinions and democratic right not to attend games, these are not, imo, actions of true Celtic fans. I am not a passive accepter and never have been. The markets you talk about in Eastern Europe are not the cheap scouting grounds they once were, Poland for instance has developed in the 4 years that we've had Artur. Your views are overly simplistic. Markets are saturated with scouts and the global appeal of Celtic is pretty much limited to our fan base-Young kids in Eastern Europe, Africa and beyond know more about Bolton than they do about Celtic. It's not as easy as you may think.

Thanks for your reply on that November '62 game.
However, I don't think that it was due to the police insistence that it took place in the afternoon.
The first game, a 2-2 draw, was played at Ibrox on a Monday evening. I remember John McNamee of all people scoring one of the goals.
Also, one of the League games that year was also played in the evening, at Celtic Park, a 1-1 draw.
A few months later, the 1963 Scottish Cup replay also took place in the evening - least said about that game the better! :(
So it remains a bit of a mystery why an afternoon kick off.
Incidentally, the crowd was only 24000.
greenlion2 - Naka only made the grade here because the league is so week .Believe me mate I love watching his free-kicks againt killie and Manure on youtube , but like Italy and now in Spain he's just a Squad player. I know we have to find someway of generating revenue and I commend PL for trying to break into the far eastern market. But its always a gamble going for these far eastern players, especially having them play in a physical league like the SPHell.

Donegal Danny - pardon me for butting in here. there is a certain logic in what you write. I don't agree with a lot of it but there are some good points in there.
However, as a bit of an amateur student of the revolutionary Left down through the years I am wondering at the logic of your Celtic Park Boycott. Any revolution that has been a success to some degree has been conducted at the most advantageous times in the most advantageous conditions. What chances of another Russian Revolution in 2009? None. WIll that stay the same forever? dunno. So to my point(s)
the Rebels, as you say, assisted the rescue of the club but at that time they were widely backed in the face of an utterly incompetent and possibly corrupt (I don't know, just saying what I heard, allegedly etc) board with the very existence of the club at stake.
the conditions were right for revolution and the tactic of Boycott. active boycott I might add. It wasn't just not turning up.
the conditions now are such that a boycott would not receive popular support, neither would it shift a board who are, I have to admit, running a fairly tight (take that whatever way you will) ship and do not have the bank on their back.
I am wondering what the protests would look like if lots of us joined you in a boycott at this stage. What would we be chanting? Sack the Board? Replace them with who?? Now I would be all for getting Dr Death out of our place because he is bringing the place in to disrepute. If there was a genuine chance of a genuine fan take over I would be in the front line of the struggle. but there isn't.
Would we chant 'Spend More Dough' or 'what do we want? manageable levels of Debt? when do we want it? When the transfer window opens?'
The zeitgiest is not a revolutionary one. Like it or lump it these are wait and see times. Our best chance of competing at 2000-2003 levels again will arrive when wages and transfer fees fall. I cannot see any other way forward for us right now and therefore it really is 'wait and see', managing the best we can in the mean time - and of course the jury is out on that at the moment.
things are not perfect right now but when the conditions are right there will be change, one way or another.

We are not being told, just how bad it is.
To use a rags expression.
One very well connected insider told me yesterday. " It's madness, when we are winning the ticket sales go up.I can't cope with the phone call's ,or the emails.A couple of bad result's and i can't give tickets away.If we have an attractive winning team, the stadium sells out.I can't believe how badly they are getting this wrong."
rdk7 - We all have different opinion's . I've seen a lot of games when he was bullied off the ball but came up with that we bit of magic when we needed it (Free Kicks).Do you think the spl compares to the Spanish or Italian leagues ? its common knowledge he's stuggling now.didnt you know? Coincidently,he's been blabbering to the Spanish hacks about how weak the spl is and how he regrets staying at Celtic so long, using that as an excuse for him not being able to hack it at Espanol,Good Asian player but no Larsson was he ?
Henrik Larsson scored 174 top-flight goals for Celtic (158 in the SPL if we must be pedantic). He did this across seven seasons (during one of which his leg was broken). He scored 35 goals in European competition for Celtic. He scored two goals in a UEFA Cup final. He set up two goals in a Champions League final, turning the course of the game. He scored goals from the middle of the box, the edge of the box, outside the box. He scored from headers, lobs, improbable angles and free kicks. He played for three of the world's biggest clubs, all of which have won the European Cup. He scored 37 goals for his country, and was made captain.
Kris Boyd has scored 151 top-flight goals (88 for Rangers. He has done this over ten seasons. He has scored three goals in European competition. He did not merit a starting place in a UEFA Cup final. He can only dream of playing in a Champions League final. He scores the majority of his goals from the six-yard box against bottom-six teams. He scores from tap-ins, offside positions and controversial penalties. He has played for two of the world's clubs, none of which have won the European Cup. He has scored eight goals for his country, before storming off in a huff when he wasn't picked one day.
Any comparison made between these two vastly different players is likely to be extremely low in value if it considers only statistics. There should be no doubt in anyone's mind that Henrik Larsson was a far superior player, and indeed the greatest to have played in the SPL.
You wouldnt recognise that asda now, its all changed..........
Actually its exactly the same...

Donegal Danny.......do you reside in a cave in the Donegal Hills.....I'm sure I saw you on my last trip the the Holy Ground...!!!
For God's sake will ye draw on some positivity. like the good people (my people) of Donegal have been doing for centuries, in the face of adversity.....support the Bhoys to the hilt, and you will be able to fill that seat with pride....He He
Danny-you are so wrong about 94. The fans did their bit, but supported the team all throughout. Our ave attendances between 90 & 94 were between 25 & 30K per season so not much of a voting with the feet there. With regards to downsizing-do you think that the debt Celtic accumulated would just go away and no-one would notice? In 94 the BOS were happy to foreclose because they were owed relatively little in comparison to c2005 levels. Celtic were in serious debt and given the fact that our club is not owned by one significant benefactor there were I believe only 2 options. First was to go again to the support and shareholders and ask for further monies in the form of a share issue. Secondly would have been to take the course which we have. In hindsight, fiscally this has proven to be the correct course, but as I am a Celtic supporter first and a shareholder second the heart rules the head in this instance and would prefer a winning team first. I am however, not buying into this whole 'I'll come back when the football gets better' it's distasteful too me. But it is your right to do so, so keep on keepin' on.
Don't tell me we're talking about a Casino now.....you'll be gettin' SDM all excited, Paul'67.....!!!!!!...or maybe not !!!

My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend..Donegal Danny
Pal, I understand yer frustration, with the seemingly static and uncomprising attitude, that the Celtic Board have adopted, in their steadfast refusal to enter into debt.
Me...I am firmly on the side of the Celtic Board,in this.
Why?
Because, in this Economic Downturn..the Present tight fisted approach of the Present Celtic Board, is the correct attitude to adopt.
It is the old story..
One must cut one's garment to suit one's supply of material.
In this Financial Climate, the very last thing that one should consider would be the accumulation of Debt.
You and others have noticed the shrinking Attendance at Celtic Games..and no matter,if one believes that the reduction in the
Match Attendance Figure, is Due to the Paucity of Entertaintment
that the present Celtic Team Have been purveying to their fans, or.. if you are in the other camp, who claim that the Diminution in the Crowd Figures, owes a big percentage,of that figure, to the Fact that, like it or
not.. The Country as a Whole, is in the Grip of a Long Lasting and
Stubborn, Economic Depression.
Therefore, Money is at a premium..and the spending of such, is patently far more useful in keeping... Family,Home and Hearth together, than spending it on Unproductive things,like..well, Entertainment.
Returning to the main point of this discourse.
Therefore..
Celtic Football club,at this moment in Time..is facing a period
of SUBSTANTIAL Reduction in Earnings, not only because of the Flagging Attendance Figures..but also.. Celtic, Will also suffer,a predictive reduction in other sections of their income stream.
Catering, Strips,etc.etc.
Pal, I can assure you...
Now, is not the Proper Time to bring up the matter of Acquiring Debt.
If,in your opinion, the Board have let the fans down, by failing to open their purse,in the Past..
Then, You may have a beef.
Howevahhh...
As, I am wont to repeat ..
Time and Again..
Those Opportunities are rooted in the Past, and, like it or no
We are living in the PRESENT.
You will just have of let go your disappointment,in the Celtic Board's failure in the Past, to act,in fulfillment of Your OWN Personal Wishes.
Those Past Opportunities are gone, and were part and parcel of another and therefore, separate.. Economic Cycle.
In the Present Economic Cycle..one in which we are firmly immersed..
It would be the Height of Folly for the Celtic Board to..
Take aboard any amount of Debt.
Maks sense tae me!
Kojo.
yer pal..who likes ye a loater.

first time ive ever posted so be gentle with me! DD you make some valid points. However I went home and away during the old board's regime as I go home and away now and the mood amongst fellow tims, despite some poor performances/results, remains generally upbeat. Yes the board, manager and playing staff have failings but for the time being they will continue to have my support both vocally and financially.

Part of the reason for the falling attendances at CP is because of the lack of atmosphere.
The people responsible for the lack of atmosphere are the fans.
Not the players. The fans.
The atmosphere at away games is far far better. Same players. Better atmosphere.
Different fan composition of course. Less middle class.Fewer prawn sandwiches. Higher proportion of fans who are members of supporters' clubs travelling on supporters' buses.

I understand your frustrations at the downsizing.
I do not understand you stopping giving Celtic income, but you are willing to give it to our competitors.
You are letting your anger and frustration at our downsizing cloud your judgement.
In a weird way you are harming yourself.
You are frustrated at our lack of spending ,but make it necessary for us to spend even less by wihdrawing your income.
I could understand this ,if you thought that your stance would be short term and bring about a change of ownership, but it won't.
Are you hoping that things get that bad that we have the need for another Celts for change movement?
If not ,start giving your money to Celtic and not our competitors.
The board can only spend what Celtic earn.
If they are not doing enough to increase income ,or expenditure is wasted, then by all means complain about that.
Celtic need our money more than ever.
This is not a time to stop supporting them financially if you can afford to.

certainly there are more empty seats than yours

i don`t know of anyone else who provides our competitors with revenue yet withholds it from our club

Im not up to speed on how he is coping, but on his time here, and before he came(when i had known about and watched him in italy), he was a great player, a really top drawer player.
"I've seen a lot of games when he was bullied off the ball" ....he wasnt a big strong player. Ive never seen scott brown pushed of the ball, and ive never seen him spraying passes, crosses, and unstopable free kicks.
Every player has strengths and weaknesses..in naka's case his weakness was his weakness....
His strengths far outweigh his weaknesses.
And he is not far off by saying the spl is guff.....it is!!!
Lets not all gang up on DD.

I think his stance is misguided ,but i have no doubt he loves Celtic dearly. As we all do.

Celts turn on the style in emphatic win
Gregor Kyle
CELTIC made it three wins in a row and turned on the style in an emphatic, highly entertaining 3-0 victory over Aberdeen.
Up against a side who were coming into this match off the back of a win over Rangers, Celtic dominated from first minute to last, fighting for every ball, forcing all the attacking play and never giving Aberdeen a chance up front.
Scott McDonald opened the scoring and Georgios Samaras got two, and were it not for some great goalkeeping from Jamie Langfield it might have been a lot more.
With Aberdeen packing their midfield, there was initially little room to manoeuvre in a cagey start to the match.
Then, with a sudden burst of pace, Danny Fox found a way through the massed ranks, intercepting the ball on the edge of his own area and sprinting forward before sliding in and testing Langfield with a shot.
This signalled the start of a good spell from Celtic and Aiden McGeady was next to break forward, picking up a clever pass from Marc Crosas on the halfway line and taking it into the Aberdeen box where he fired inches wide.
Georgios Samaras had also been a handful, latching on to one long ball down the left flank from Gary Caldwell and skinning Jerel Ifil. His low cross was then narrowly missed by Scott McDonald, who was squeezed out by Maurice Ross.
There were further chances and close calls for McDonald and Samaras, although this was a tough and thankless task for Celtic, attempting to break down a side who had 10 men behind the ball at all times and were looking to Lee Miller to hold up play as the lone front man.
The visitors made only the occasional foray forward in the opening half hour, with a speculative long-range shot from Miller that looped past the post, their only attempt on goal.
As half time approached, McDonald had another crack, forcing a save from Langfield after some determined play from McGeady. Then, in the 39th minute, they got the breakthrough their play deserved.
It was a beautiful pass from Crosas that unlocked the defence, playing in Andy Hinkel on the right. The German has been one of Celtic’s great providers this season and teed up McDonald who fired the ball in off Langfield.
Although the goal finally forced the visitors onto the front foot, this only left space at the back and Crosas sent one shot spinning wide, while Charlie Mulgrew was booked for a foul on McGeady.
With his side now chasing the game, Mark McGhee changed the approach after the interval, going for four at the back, with Peter Pawlett taking up a more advanced role, just behind Miller.
However, it was a case of more of the same for Celtic and no sooner had Aberdeen cleared a Gary Caldwell header off the line, than Samaras had peeled away from Jerel Ifil and headed home a perfectly placed chip from McGeady.
Then, just seconds later, Ifil rounded off a miserable afternoon with a straight red card, stupidly kicking Samaras after he had been fouled.
Having struggled to create and cause problems for Celtic, this moment of idiocy effectively crushed the visitors’ hopes of taking anything from the game and provided further incentive for Mowbray’s men, with Samaras forcing a great save from Langfield and Crosas coming close with a shot from 25 yards.
With the home support in full voice and the team in full flow, Celtic had chances to add to their lead, with Samaras heading wide, Glenn Loovens coming close with a header and the outstanding McGeady forcing a good save from the busy Langfield.
The procession continued when Loovens saw a header cleared off the line and Crosas played a clever one-two and almost teed-up Marc Antoine Fortune and although Aberdeen were down to 10 men, they never really got a look-in during the 90 minutes.
It might even have turned into a rout, with Robson forcing another great save from Langfield, NGuemo dancing through the defence and cracking a shot off the post and McGinn also clipping the woodwork.
As it transpired, it was Samaras who had caused Aberdeen no end of problems throughout the match who added the third, persevering to tap the ball past Langfield under pressure.
Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the park, Artur Boruc, who was making his first appearance after injury since October 22, never had a save to make.
It was an excellent all-round performance from Celtic, with every man playing their part and, with this the final game home game before Christmas and a difficult run of away games coming up, it was one that will only heighten the growing confidence within the team.
Goals goals goals.
The build up for the first one.
Pfyar,
Yep, He's hard but fair in that when he goes for a tackle he gets the ball. Decision making at the back is good and more important to TM he can play football.

'I've paid for my seat and demand to be entertained otherwiswe I'll sit on my hands. Now entertain me.'
That's the attitude of most people who attend CP.
I saw the Celtic Park Boycott a few years ago, in the oooooooooollllllllllllllllllle Burns Howff.
What a waste of Tims and money that was.
Call me old fashioned but I enjoyed the game yesterday. I thought the team played well, and would not have been flattered if the final score had been 9-0.
I have my own views on the current board's performance;I don't allow them to get in the way of my tiny contribution to Celtic, which is to be the best supporter I can.
When I cleared my dad's house I came across the Willie Maley biography [by DW Potter], I'm reading it just now and it reinforces the conclusion that through the efforts of the likes of Mr Maley Celtic are the greatest club in the World.

most of the fans are the same ones who attend every week.
I agree that there isn't enough of an atmosphere but it is a 2 way thing.
TinyTim-Danny does make a good few points, but his methods of expressing his views-ie giving his money to Rangers, Hearts et al instead of Celtic, are misguided at best. The situation between 94 and now is so different that they are almost incomparable. Guys like my Dad who were around in the 50s & early 60's pre-Stein have a laugh at the current 'crisis'. Even back to 94, the fans didn't desert the team. Fans brought up in a diet of success after success find it very difficult to adjust to a downturn. To paraphrase an old saying 'If we'd had it easy, we wouldn't have had to struggle. If we hadn't struggled, we wouldn't be so strong'

That is a great suggestion.
I know that the credit crunch has a bearing on the downturn in attendances ,but i believe Celtics are down even more that our competitors, due to the disillussionment of fans.

Once upon a time, and a very long time ago it was, if things weren't going well on the parch the Celtic fans urged the players to do better.
That doesn't happen now.
What happens now is that if the players play well the fans express their appreciation.
We've stopped supporting the team.
We now appreciate them.

I cant think of another player with four clubs who have won the big cup never mind five, plenty with three though.
EN
Dean Saunders has four with Villa, Liverpool, Forest and Benfica.
Christian Vieri must be there or thereabouts. He's played for Milan, Inter, Juve and at least 20 other clubs.
First chance to post since the game at the weekend.
Delighted for Samaras. He was outstanding and the only disappointment for me that he didnt get his hat trick. He's not had it easy recently and has been on the wrong end of some horrific abuse from sections of the support but has kept the head down and plugged away to get his form back.
I hope he doesnt leave in the January window as I can definately seen signs of a great player in him.
Rest of the team did really well also especiallour much maligned defence. Many times we've heard how our centre halfs particularly Caldwell cant handle big centre forards but on Saturday Lee Miller never got a look in.
Things looking good but I'll refrain from predictions of dominance till after Fir Park and Tynecastle. Maximum points from these two games and we'll be in good shape.

Why the need for pejorative language to describe fellow Celtic Fans?
SwanseaBhoy
I never got to see the game against Aberdeen, but when I saw the score I was well chuffed. After reading the match thread I was even more so, because of the apparent manner of our win. Then thanks to bigjie I managed to see the goals. Not quite the same as seeing the game itself and not an adrenaline patch, by a long stretch of the imagination, in lieu of being in Paradise in person. But my outlook on my day, which I always try hard to be positive, was enhanced with a wee warm glow. Try to explain that glow to a non-supporter of a sporting club and you may just be wasting your breath and time.
That glow is not a measure of your passion for your club it is merely an indicative personal barometer of how much satisfaction you derived from any particular result on any given match day. I like that glow, I like to drag it out from one game to the next. It is narcotic and as such I have to put my hand up and admit an addiction to that glow. It is a subconscious high that gives me a pleasant outlook on life and no test has yet evolved to capture its essence, it presence, or its psychological proof. Sometimes the inane grin on your face and the compelling need to punch the sky as you make your way to a mixed workplace on a Monday morning gives you away, but then how hard were you really trying to conceal it anyway. I don’t try and explain my addiction to philistines as often as I used to, but I do feel smugly vindicated when others publicly admit to sharing the same need for that high as I.
Conversely, we all suffer the same withdrawals when it is not forthcoming. For whatever reason, whether it be a better team has gubbed us, whether a ref has mugged us or whether our clubs hero’s took a day off, whatever, if we don’t get the result we thought was just and fair, we all feel in part hollow. We can in the extreme grieve like we have lost a loved one. And all because our team didn’t deliver us the fix we craved. But we get by… until the next game, we get by and we again, individually and collectively, will our club to strive to give us - that day - our… glow. And as Celtic supporters we know both the glow and the hollows only too well.
We're on the one road
Sharing the one load
We're on the road to God knows where
We're on the one road
It may be the wrong road
But we're together now who cares
North men, South men, comrades all
Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Donegal
We're on the one road swinging along
Singing a soldier's song
I always loved that song, I still love that song. I hope somebody is there to sing it when I leave this world.
It is defiant in adversity and unifying in celebration. When my wee glow is inexplicably threatened, I tend to find myself singing that song in my head. After a better than good result against Aberdeen at the weekend, I now find myself defiantly singing those words rather than reveling in the glow.
There is something not just right about that.
Sometimes there are many strangers on the same road that we take to god knows where, they want to go to the party but they just don’t want to get in the mood.

I am fortunate to have a first edition of Willie Maley's, "Story of the Celtic", which my grandfather bought for my father when it was published in 1939.
It chronicles the story of the club from it's inception until 1938.
In my mind, it is the definitive book on Celtic's origins and it somewhat amuses me when I read of some of the skewed views of Celtic's history that gets posted here and elsewhere.
What about Ronald Koeman.

This is in Celtic’s DNA. It has something to do with being set up to be a bridge between peoples at the end of the nineteenth century, and then football spreading all over the planet for precisely that reason in the twentieth.
Walfrid foresaw this, acknowledging without doubt a wee nod from the Holy Spirit (for this is how the Holy Spirit works). Then, the football side of things fell into the hands of people such as Willie Maley, who understood the import of this vision and shared the desire behind it.
It will interest you, others I don't know, to know that after many emails to Tablero Deportivo on Radio Nacional de España, they finally called me back tonight.
Last night, they were rounding up the European leagues and said Rangers were top of the top flight in Scotland after beating Falkirk 1-3. I emailed them right away to say that Rangers' lead had been very shortlived and that the Bhoys were back on top.
They emailed back and asked for a phone number and called me this evening at half time in the game between Villarreal and Getafe. I said the friendship that had grown up between Villarreal and Celtic, although unusual, was what football was meant to be about. Because we go out into the world with that idea firmly implanted in all of us, experiences like the Villarreal one are in keeping with the norm for us.
Onésimo Sánchez, a total and complete Real Valladolid hero, an Aiden McGeadyesque player who was so good, he went ON LOAN from Valladolid to Barcelona (Valladolid knew he had to play at a higher level, but couldn't bear to part with him on a permanent basis), was on the programme. He said: “That's exactly what makes football so beautiful.”
Their man in Villarreal came on to say that the sight of Celtic and Villarreal fans playing each other at football and, later, sharing enormous dishes of paella, would live with him for ever. And that, when Villarreal went to Celtic Park, and the announcement over the loudspeaker that that night’s opponents were Villarreal should inspire a standing ovation from the home crowd … the man in Villarreal said the hairs on the back of his neck were standing up. He added that he knew, from speaking to Villarreal supporters, that Celtic fans had travelled from Glasgow to lend their support when Villarreal played in Manchester in the same Champions’ League group.
I didn't say that if a club's supporters regard trips abroad as a chance to emphasise what sets them apart, it's bound to lead to antagonism.
It seems simple when you put it down in black and white, but Willie Maley was way ahead of his time, bettered only in his visionary status by Brother Walfrid.
Let those of us who love Celtic stay faithful, always and for ever, to this doctrine of unity among peoples. This is what makes Celtic the greatest club in the world. Much credit must go to Mr Maley, but not only to him.
This is my contribution to the discussion you have sought to get going.

Bang On.
This is not the time to go further into Debt.
I think by spending what we already have and not having CL income this season we will make around a £6 million loss this season.
I have fears that the board have appointed a manager who will not fullfill their ambitions.
If this occurs. Then we must question this.
Like many i have spoken to since, when Fortune came on yesterday we were all silently praying he would score ( he was given a rousing roar when he came on).At worst we were just wanting a glimpse that we have been missing something in his game.Hoping that his form was a temporary blip.
I saw nothing to raise my hopes further.
Mogga is to blame.
If Mogga fails, then the board appointed him,so they are to blame.
I obviously want him to succeed.I think that he is a very good human being.
A man amongst men.
I just worry that his football philosophy is not practical for Celtic in the here and now.
Our so-called non spending board have already given him millions.
They are backing him.

Disagree mate. I was at the game at Hamilton in October and there werer a few fans, one in particular, near to me giving Samaras dogs abuse a lot of it very personal. In a small stadium he could hear a lot of what was said and it was plainly obvious it was getting to him. He certainly didnt deserve this type of abuse and he certainly wasnt the worst player that day.
I'm all for fans having their say on message boards and forums but this type of abuse rubbed into a players face is unhelpful and unnecessary.

I view it more as hid 'disposition' than his attitude which is his problem.
He has a kind of hangdog expression when things do not work for him which makes it look like he has 'chucked it', others do not seem to get so bothered.
I think he wears his heart on his sleeve a bit, which is great when it is going for him / us.
I loved him charging onto the pitch when warming up and we got the penalty vs Rangers etc, I like the passion he brings.
I think if he is feeling loved valued and appreciated, and is 'on form ' he will be a really good Celtic player.
Sadly at CP most seem to look for people to abuse in the hoops most week rather than cheer.
Hopefully yesterday and 2 wins on the road will cut the team some slack.....and allow them to really flourish.
Donegal and Mac1888
I think this boy could be a star I leapt from my seat at Rugby Park on his debut(and landed on the lady in front of me!) but his attitude has me bemused and at times angry and yes I do believe he deserves criticism so long as it is proportionate and not vindictive. I hope youre right Mac1888 and maybe the Pointer put his finger to some good use and we saw the results on Saturday!
Think I have it - Ronaldo. He has played for PSV, Barca, Real and the 2 Milan clubs. Also big Pierre deserves a mention with 4 - Us, Feyenoord, Forest & Benfica.
I hope that it was not premature, but it was great to read that BBJ was doing well in his fight against Cancer.
Keep fighting it John.
Swanseabhoy,
Was it just the 1 that saw you thru the 4-6 years. Good eating in them. My granny lived on Buchanan Street so it was round there most of the time, then down to Tonny Tango's for a quarter of sweeties. Columba high the days, Eddie Cairns now there was a heedie.
I bow to your superior knowledge on whether it CB or Dalziel's the colestorol has obviously dulled the grey matter.
ma brother now lives in chester and is a fairly frequent visitor to the celtic club/pub. Lovely town.

Agree. Serves no purpose. Loved Alan Thompson, abuse he got around me was disgraceful. Almost got a dig in the head for telling a fella to f**k up next to me.
My dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,dear,friend..67th Heaven.
I have no complaints,regarding Donegal Danny's Complaints..
Even his idea, that we should withdraw our financial support of the Team...is a velvet threat.
I know and you Know... and even.. Lou knows.. that Danny's latter suggestion is composed of Smoke and Mirrors.
Danny, will nevah fulfill that suggestion of his.
It is merely stuffing that he has added, in support of alleviating his frustration, of watching His Celtic, in the last Several weeks.. playing, like a bunch of Pussy Willlows.
Imagine..Cetlic, Losing to Dundee Untied.. And those Most Disappointing Tie Games.. against, the Motherwells and other organizations of low class mien.
Personally, I can commiserate with Danny.
Na..
Danny, is a Stand-Up -Guy.
And.. I like him a loater..

Remember the Tesco in Bellshill flute band thing?
Any truth in the rumour that staff in Tesco Coatbridge booked their Christmas do in St Pat's Hall and were told to abandon their plans by management?
Surely not?

Yours was a disgraceful contribution. It's written all Samaras' face how the personal abuse affects him.
Celtic 1st.
So were you on the radio then?
Is that the Spanish equivalent of Radio Clyde and were you El Tel O'Neill?
Can we download it as a podcast and hear you putting on the lingo?
Playfusbal-can't say for anywhere else but in Cumbernauld the half vienna was a Dalziel's delicacy. Remember it vividly. Bigger than was decent for a roll n chips!!
Burnley'78
A lot of valid points mate. I really despair at the attitude of fellow 'supporters' who don't seem happy unless theyre venting a spleen at someone in the hoops! I just get p'd off at his seemingly apathetic attitude/disposition when things go against him/us.

Great story, good to read that.

Eddie Cairns boy was in my year. He was a fine heedie.
I've only been in Chester since the Summer and have been in the Celtic club several times. Been made very welcome, not least by Celtic First who is a regular poster on here.
Ah, Tommy Tango's! Now there's a sweetie shop. Used to often see the shop van parked at The Forge on matchdays.

Estadio Nacional
A sad sorry tale today. I'd picked Fulham, E. stirling, Villarreal, Valencia, Fiorentina and sadly Genoa. Once again a Genoa draw has killed me twice in five days, if it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all. It's all my own fault as I have a soft spot for Genoa as I was there in 1990 for the world cup watching Scotland and then later Ireland. I liked it there not a beautiful city but more akin to Glasgow and Liverpool being depending on the Docks. I was befriended by a couple of Genoa supporters who helped me when I became ill for a couple of days that and they hated Sounness too so I always look for their results since then.

I would never condone PERSONAL abuse but being critical of a lack of effort and application is a completely different matter.

You are correct,pal.
Mr.Boruc, was most definitely signed by Mr.Strachan.
So that improves Mr.Strachan's Average a wee bit.
