Good Friday is just another Friday for you

1828

Sometimes it seems there is a constant struggle underway for the heart and soul of Celtic.  It is incredible that for 125 years a community has managed to retain the conviction to help the less fortunate which drove forward those who formed the club.

Scarcely a day goes by without me receiving a message from someone offering to help those in need.  This week it was tables for the Wayside Club Gala Dinner (Saturday 27 April, check it out here), someone send in a box set of the Byrds, to raise money ‘for the homeless’, and a reader parted with a precious top signed by the Seville team, which I’ve to collect in Glasgow.

Much of this goes on below radar but when a call to arms is needed it goes out in impressive clarity; the Wee Oscar campaign slipped into an infrastructure established when Kano took ill a few years back (hope you are doing well, Kano and we hear from you soon).  Believe me, some of the work, and many of the discrete donations, would blow you away.

None of this is random.  At some point each and every person who has stepped forward did so, knowingly or not, because of the way the Celtic Movement infected them.

A number of Celtic fans, and one former treble winning captain, are helping the Celtic Charity this year with the objective of encouraging each Celtic fan to raise £125.  It feels like the right thing to do and if you’ve not brought yourself up to speed with the project yet, do it this weekend (more information here).

There will be formal events throughout the year but if you want to do a sponsored run/walk/cycle/jig, this is your invitation.  You are reading this stuff because of your link all the way back to that hall in the Calton; get involved and earn your place in that 125-year-old story.

The next major event is a mass huddle at the top of Ben Nevis, check it out here.

Enjoy your Easter holiday – but not before you get involved………

  2. I have raised my £125 with my pals but here is one you may want to contribute to, it’s a great thing for a member of staff to get involved…..

As the Club celebrates its 125th year The Celtic Charity has asked for staff, seasonal members and supporters of the Club to make a pledge to raise £125. The over all aim is for everyone to raise an additional £125000 for The Celtic Charity and in what I thought was a moment of wisdom (now madness!!) I have pledged to climb Ben Nevis. I was attracted as at the top all participants will be taking part in the world’s highest huddle.

I am not fit by any means however, I have found a 7 week training plan and will be sticking to it so I can reach the summit. So many people have told me horror stories – their cousins toe’s were still black 3 months after, knees giving way and taking 5 hours to hobble back down, having to get steaming just to numb the pain!!

I must admit now that I am slightly terrified but as a member of staff and supporter of the Club I feel it is important for me to help give back to this great Club and ask if you could support in any way at all we would be extremely grateful.

I have attached a link to my donation page and if you are able to spare any funds I would really appreciate it.

After the challenge I look forward to sharing my own horror stories and pictures of you all. I think huddling on top of the world will be a truly unique experience.

    Kind regards

  3. CQN Good Friday thought for the day…

From Nazareth He came. He said “Behold! I am the One!

Of whom the ancients spoke. I tell you I have come”

The promised Sacrificial Lamb, The Redeemer, The Messiah!

Foretold in the prophecies of Daniel and Isaiah

“I come to free the world of Sin, Your liberty to gain”

Spoken of so long ago, before the Saviour came.

They took Him at Gethsemane. He asked them “What is this?

I am a thief? For you come with swords, yet betray me with a kiss”

They took Him to the Elders; Pilate washed his hands and said

“I find no charge against this man” “Why do you want him dead”

The crowd just shouted all the more, “We want him crucified”

“We have no king but Caesar” “We think it’s time he died”

They stripped Him, they whipped Him, and they crowned His head with thorns

They sent Him out to meet His death. The reason He was born.

They laid a tree across His back, half-dead He made his way,

Stumbling, bleeding, to Golgotha. To die on Calvary.

Hung on a cross between two thieves, He prayed for me and YOU!

“Father, forgive them for my names’ sake, they know not what they do!”

He lifted up His eyes to God, they stood to mock and boast!

He cried out “Father, it is done!” and offered up the ghost.

The sky grew dark as midnight! The veil was torn in two!

The Gates of Heaven opened wide! The centurion, He knew!

That God’s own Son had died that day. His time here now was past.

He died so that we might live. He freed us all at last!

In three days time the tomb was bare. The stone was rolled away!

“The One you seek” The Angel said “He is Risen, Gone away”

Then he was right there with them, they tried to run and hide.

He showed the nail-marks on His hands, where a sword had pierced His side.

“I go now to the Father; stay here! You will have power!

Then spread the news across the world. I return at the appointed hour.

A support of around 40,000 can only generate so much income and The Rangers are living beyond that supports capacity to support.

That is not to say that a sustainable business model is not achievable but to keep at that level better quality players are required.

There are two ways to get them, buy them at unaffordable prices or develop them.

They currently do not have the infrastructure to develop and cannot buy the level of quality to become the Rangers that died of a financial overdose.

There might still be a Rangers but not as we know them.

The biggest risk to this not happenning is if Celtic stop doing what is

When I think of Celtic I think of a title of a SF book I once read that I have amended in my head to say

“The Club That Shouted Love at The Heart of The World.

Celtic were founded on charity, charity is another name for love and whilst at times we sail through troubled waters we are assured that love never ever fails.

  11. Could someone please enlighten me to the set of circumstances which could see us win the league against Hibs?

  17. niallo83 , Auldheid,

I’m afraid anything other than a complete and proper liquidation for them, which includes loss of stadium and other assets, is a salve to them.

We know in our hearts that everyone is going to consider them as being the same club, that after falling on hard times, due, mainly to one man, are now climbing back to their proper place in football.

SFTB said last night, I think, that we will be the only ones left standing who will call them Sevco/Newclub and that will be dismissed as paranoia.

Remember, when Whyte issued his proclamation at a team called Rangers playing at Ibrox, it was as a rallying call, giving hope for the future.

If Celtic don’t come out of this smelling of integrity, them I fear that more supporters will abandon the club over this than any other issue.

Add in decent, honourable fans from other clubs, then you have Armageddon.

This is the issue that should be concentrating the minds, but it seems that it is being left to other sites to look at the big picture.

We are too busy laughing at them, whilst sharpening our pitchforks over side issues.
