Don’t mention the (boardroom) war

1004

With financial projections which provide entertaining reading, Rangers International promoted director, Walter Smith, to the position of chairman.  Smith immediately proclaimed, “Unity among the directors is vital”, although he was not asked about the forthcoming EGM where fellow directors Malcolm Murray and Chris Morgan face dismissal, while a third director, Charles Green, suggested he was going to resign by today, but has not got around to filling out the form yet (does this guy have ‘form’ when it comes to filling Companies House forms?)…..

They don’t do unity very well.

The only show in town is season ticket sales; for all clubs.  Maybe Celtic should appoint Martin O’Neill to the board for a few weeks to allow the newspapers to provide some bluster for those who more convinced by headlines and sound-bites than strategy?  Perhaps not.  Let’s stick to plan.

Lisbon Lion in Ayrshire, send reinforcements!

Willie Wallace will be at Waterstons in Ayr from 1-3pm this afternoon, get along (with camera) if you can.

Tomorrow Willie will be at the Celtic Superstore from 12-2pm before going to the Celtic Shop, Clydebank, from 3.30-5.30pm.  Get out and meet the man.

Great to meet so many people at Waterstons, Stirling, last night. The store sold out of Willie’s autobiography. There was actually a queue of people waiting to enter the store at one point.

Just a few days left on the auction for the signed Messi strip, a magnificent piece of football memorabilia. Keep an eye on it here.

Order your copy of Heart of a Lion, delivered before Father’s Day, below…..

  1. Lech coach Mariusz Rumak told Polish media today that Aleksandar Tonev will stay with his team until the end of this season. Tonev and Lech will make decision after the season is over. Rumak told that Tonev’s agents wanted the player to change the club. It was their decision.

Only a support as consistently gullible and stupid as the Sevco support could be taken in by this shuffling of chairs (literally). A painfully transparent ploy to get them to part their hard earned on season books, you’d almost feel sorry for them if they weren’t so vile.

  13. So Leggat is equating Walter’s appointment to winning WW2?

Well, I’ll have you know that when Churchill was asked if Sevco would face another liquidation, he said, “Oh Yes”.

  14. Hi Paul67,

“The only show in town is season ticket sales; for all clubs. Maybe Celtic should appoint Martin O’Neill to the board for a few weeks to allow the newspapers to provide some bluster for those who more convinced by headlines and sound-bites than strategy?”

Totally agree with you on Walter Smith’s promotion to Chairman of the Ibrox Club, though I’m not sure Martin would get the unequivocal MSSM support.

I remember when WS returned as manager to the original Rangers, he and Ally were of course the management team with the National Squad, we were a hair’s breadth away from qualifying for a major tournament and they were poached by Rangers.

At that time I was suspicious of and a bit cynical towards, the Scottish Press but still thought of them as reporters first and foremost.

I bought the Daily Record that morning wondering if they were going to condone this betrayal, and if so how they would spin this duplicitious behaviour.

Of course I needn’t have bothered, the FRONT page – The Dream Team.

Back Page splash – ten double pages on the triumphant return of the prodigals.

In most Countries turning your back on your National Team at a crucial time would be seen as treason. Now I didn’t expect them to be given a hard time of course, just the cringing from their mealy mouth excuses for desertion.

No not a bit of it, they were treated as returning heros, no awkward questions; the leaving in the lurch, the unfortunate timing, not a second thought on what their priorities should have been…

There was a CQNer who would repeat Scotland is Rangers, Rangers is Scotland.

Anyone with any doubts just needs to pick up that edition of the DR.

Yet the fact is, although many of the powerbrokers, the opinion formers and decision makers were/are Rangers men, they are NOT the majority. Last year the the bulk of Scotland’s supporters proved that without the fans Football is nothing.

Walter Smith will fail in his latest mission, one last twist and the spivs are away and it will be proven as it was in the eighties a strong Rangers with their ill informed entourage, supine sycophants and grand fixers are Bad for Scottish Football.

    Hail! Hail!

  15. Dead and loving it,

Cheers buddy. I’ll have to try and find that reply. I think I asked him about other players in the Polish league aswell.

  17. The Monaco situation is interesting. They are my local team (even though I live in Italy). The problem is not that they are dodging tax – Monaco is a different country to France, and it’s not even in the EU. They pay their taxes to the legal authority, which is Monaco. The problem is that they play in the French league. Let’s say that Monaco decided to pay the same tax as the “real” French clubs do, who would they pay it to? The Monaco authorities would not be interested (bad precedent! The real business of Monaco would be very unimpressed), and the French authorities would not have the jurisdiction to receive tax from what is effectively a foreign country (imagine that Barca decided to pay their taxes to the HMRC!). So there are no tax-based solutions to this. The non-tax-based solution is that Monaco don’t play in the French league (or that they accept the status quo). Or something more inventive, e.g. that Monaco give a certain amount to charity (even if it’s not the full amount, the French clubs would find themselves backed into a corner if they were accused of e.g. denying €x million to cancer research). I can’t imagine that the French clubs want to expel Monaco, although I can appreciate that Monaco has an unfair advantage.

Just as an aside, let’s say that Celtic (and whatever Rangers are called this week) gets permission to play in the EPL, after Scotland votes for independence (perhaps both unlikely, but bear with me). We would find ourselves under a different tax regime to the EPL clubs, and if there were to be a difference, given the differing attitudes to society in Scotland and England (where there is no such thing as society, at least in parts of England), we would probably be paying more tax than the EPL clubs do.

Monaco season tickets are surprisingly reasonable, last year they started at €70 for the cheapest seats – of course I expect them to be more this year. I imagine that the pies and Bovril are replaced by canapés and Sancerre, so that would drive up the attendance price. And of course there is always the chance of bumping into Craig Whyte, maybe I could get an autograph.

SoT, shoes, yes. I think that many women are with Imelda Marcos on this. With my wife it is gardens – probably cheaper, although you don’t need to water shoes. Sunny and warm on the Italian Riviera.

Where are the zombies accounts? Is Sir Walter bringing £1m per month of his own cash to pump into the club? Also, if zombie FC are to sign players in September should there not be a due diligence check that they can actually afford to pay for them?
