Karagandy manager on Celtic and his own players

1898

Shakhtar Karagandy Russian manager, Viktor Kumykov, gave an interview after their elimination of the Albanian champions in the last Champions League qualifier.  He talked about his team, which, unlike some in former Soviet countries, does not have an oligarch benefactor or rich sponsor.

Kumykov thought four of his potential opponents were of equal standing, although he clearly respects Celtic’s recent achievements in the Champions League.

He said, “Getting through to the play offs round is historical achievement for the club and for Kazakh football. We hope this is for the start and we would play in Europe regularly. Even if we don’t go to the Champions League, we will play in UEFA Europa League, which means we will be in the elite of the European football.

“We have made it to the group stage of one of the European competitions, which was our main target. It does not mean we can rest now and say we will not fight for more, but our main target is Cup of Kazakhstan. We have never won it before.

“From a football perspective, I think it might be better for us to be in the Europa League than the Champions League. If we go through to the Champions League we will play against much better teams, where we can meet giant clubs. For this we would need to buy few players to strengthen the team. We short of depth and players I have at the moment would not cope with big competitions. I have no experienced players.

“It’s difficult to say who against I want to play. All five teams are better than us. Celtic is different story, they are apart from the others. That team played in the Champions League last season and got through to the knock out round. They beat Barcelona. They beat Spartak Moscow away and at home.

“The Other four are all similar class one to each other but they are all stronger than us. Each of them play at a higher level. The team God gives us will be the team we will play against. It makes no sense to say who we want.”

  1. I hear Ryanair fly into Karagandy the airport is called Moscow only a 100 hour bus journey :-)

  2. No need to take any food along:

“A guest is always given a special welcome and offered the place of honour.

He or she is first treated to fermented mare’s milk, fermented camel’s milk) or fermented cow’s milk….Appetizers of horse or mutton meat follow… the most popular dish has always been the national meat dish, “beshparmak” (“five fingers” because of the manner in which it is eaten). It is made of large chunks of boiled meat, which the host cuts and serves to each guest according to their importance: the pelvic bones and shin to the elderly guests of honor, the brisket to the son or daughter-in-law, the cervical vertebra to girls and so on…The highest ranking guest is served a sheep’s head cooked in a special way and distributes it to other guests according to local tradition (old men, children, close and distant relatives).”

Just checked google maps for directions to the match…

Take ramp onto M5, after 203 miles turn right…

    Join A1 drive straight for 159 miles…

Might need a few CDs for the car…

Alternatively, just take one Pink Floyd album.

That would make the 70 hour trip fly by….

  4. A mate of mine who has worked in oil and gas fields over the world, reckons Kazakstan is the scariest place he’s ever visited though I don’t think he’s been to Larkhall yet.

Having said that, no doubt there’s Kazaks typing “Glasgow” into Google and goin,

“Aw fer fuxake, – Gorbals razor gangs, zombies and Lulu. Think

I’ll give this one a miss, comrade.”

  5. They will be up for this. Make no mistake about that. We are by no means thru yet. Further quality signings are required. The board won’t want to spend, they might think they don’t need to.

  6. The Bottom Line is ............. on

It takes 3 weeks to get there and they’ve asked us to bring a ball

  7. Keep in mind, last year’s Celtic and present – are two big differences! They have two key players are gone. Equivalent replacement did not find them. We have to see them a couple of matches. I’m sure it’s real, TAKE THEM! Barca and that last year lost due to wild Celtic simplified scheme. Think of Spartacus – led and flew through the complacency game simple design of “hit-and-run.” They are stubborn, yes. But, master, not super complicated playbook at them.

  8. The Bottom Line is ………….

    I know its an ‘L’ of a journey! :-)

Looks like anyone travelling would need to take the London-Moscow overnight flight to arrive on the morning of the match.

There is no flight out after the game that evening – so it would mean an overnight stay and flights back the next day getting into London in the evening.

Including taxes – looks like flights would be in the £1400-2000 range (excluding match tickets and overnight stay).

I think the TV wins this one! :-)

  9. off oot as they say for an indian and a good swally,

hopefully make a few quid courtesy of the CQN tipsters,

might pop into Thomas Cook to see if they do all inclusive in Kazahkstan,

It’s Aberdeen, but I agree, play the second team, fly out early to get used to the time difference etc.

This game is worth 20 mill.

    Agreed TET

Ps anyone who beats Bate Borisov over 2 legs are no mugs. This will be harder than Elfsborg get Derk fit at least and an expierienced Centre Half even on loan for this.

  11. Speaking of the stadium, according to rumors, UEFA has closed his eyes to the fact that we do not have toilets, seats are not like VIP lozhy missing, filled the bowl that our mayor went on the field to congratulate the players after the match against BATE Borisov. This shocked the inspectors game, because you can not be on the field to outsiders, in the locker room, please, and can not be on the field. So we played in Astana.

Why is their match fixing scandal from 5 or so years ago one to keep an eye on, any ongoing investigations that we should be aware of?!

  16. Celtic is very strong, stronger than BATE will be, but quite capable of walking, with the right mindset, tactics and breakneck Kumykova dedication!

  17. You can always catch the opponent on undervaluation, I think there will be an underestimation. The main thing that could Kumykov players to properly configure

  18. I know the CL is very important but I don;t believe resting players unless injured will help us beat the Kazaks. We have had numerous people on here the last few weeks saying the team are short of match fitness because they haven;t played many competitive games. We have one postponed at the weekend. We now have people saying we should rest players for a trip to Aberdeen because we have to fly to Kazakhstan? Aberdeen look a good side this season. We need to get points on the board. We also need matches for our players to get match fit! The league is our bread and butter. Please don’t get into this the league is already won mentality. That is exactly what we don’t want the players thinking. We will have to go out and win this league. It won’t be handed to us.

If one team mounts any type of challenge this season every team in the league will try their best against us to give that team a chance of winning the league. let’s make sure we have a good lead at Christmas. That only comes from winning games and playing our best players as much as possible!

CL is important for what? Money? Will we spend it?

The league is just as important.

now if Celtic were to charter a larger plane than usual they could offset their costs by allowing fans to pay their way on it – otherwise a nightmare to get to

  21. I’m pinning my hopes on them being disqualified by UEFA. Far, far too far to travel. Bit worrying them being an unknown quantity. Still, it’s a lot better than following thon deid team fae Govan.

Do not drink the fermented camels milk ,it is rank rotten i know i have tried it. It is also the most nuked country in the world the Soviets having detonated scores of test nukes there. However the people are very friendly and for you single Bhoys a veritable multitude of beautiful single women from tall statuesque blonds to small Asiatics with every possible combination between.
