Bet your novelty duck there are lessons to be learned

1033

Celtic probably anticipated the three match suspension Uefa imposed on Scott Brown following his red card for an off the ball incident against Barcelona, if they didn’t, they should have.  That’s not to say the decision is not “harsh”, as the club described it, as far as off the ball incidents go, this was a lesser offence, but it was a red card awarded for an off the ball incident nonetheless.

Are there lessons to be learned?  You can bet your novelty Celtic duck on it.

No more on this, or injuries, until late next week.  Absolute focus is required on the task ahead.  Ajax will arrive in town on Monday low on confidence, let’s take them.

A CQN’er has kindly donated two tickets for Tuesday’s game at Celtic Park against Ajax for the 1254125 appeal.  You can bid for them by silent auction by emailing your bid to ajax@celticquicknews.co.uk.

Please include telephone contact details.  Auction will close at 19:00 on Sunday.  The winning bidder will be notified on Sunday evening, tickets need to be paid for directly to the 1254125 MyDonate campaign before 12:00 on Monday or the tickets will be offered to an alternative bidder.

Many thanks for participating.

  1. I have a niece who works in a London Publishing House. This morning is a grey wet miserable day here. Tried to play Golf gave up after 4 holes arrived home wondering how to put down the day and found a bulky item in the post from said niece. Opened it to find a copy of Faithful Through and Through by Richard Purden. Day’s activities sorted as a kind of thank you to her, thought I’d give the book a plug.

Description for Faithful Through and Through

Following on from We Are Celtic Supporters, Richard Purden tackles a variety of subjects in his second book Faithful Through and Through. Here he takes a fresh look at the people who have added to the wider culture, reputation and traditions on and off the park which have strengthened Celtic’s position as a much valued institution. Purden talks to a selection of supporters, ex-players, managers and public figures, while travelling to a number of historical locations. While visiting the club’s ancestral home in Ireland he discusses Celtic in the context of faith, politics and identity. The author channels the voices of secret millionaires, Irish troubadours, Scottish politicians and the club’s most popular icons who take you on a Celtic odyssey in a continuing story that underlines why this team from Glasgow’s East End personify a way of life that represents unwavering hope and positive life-affirming values around the world.

  3. Headline in the Evening Times

    “Gers rivals sign ex-Ibrox youth”

What? Who have the ‘tic signed up? That was my immediate thought!

Then I remembered they aren’t our ‘rivals’, we have never played them.

I read the story and it became clear

“Rangers League One rivals East Fife have snapped up former Ibrox and Motherwell midfielder Stephen Hughes.”

There’s something about the start of that sentence that brings a large smile to my face!

Re Barry Ferguson’s article, which is a sign of the growing awakening by the supporters of his old club.

The breaking of trust did not begin 3 years ago. It began as soon as the men running Rangers decided to keep side letters hidden from the SFA.

You see the system in governance in place has been basically one of trust.

The SFA ask certain questions, certain boxes get ticked to suit the answer given because the answer is believed. No real digging and why should there be? It was just a sport after all and sport depends totally on trust.

It would be madness to break it surely?

Not when the potential rewards for doing so seem to exceed the costs of being caught. Not when the commercial aspect totally overwhelms sporting integrity.

So the question is have the game’s governors realised yet that answers by clubs cannot be taken at face value? Are the processes in place really robust and resilient enough to deal with the commercial world in which the game now operates?

That seems to be the stance of the SFA and UEFA in response to the 2011 UEFA licence issue but yet rules designed to protect the taxpayer clearly failed as they were applied. Otherwise there would be no questions to answer, no resolutions seeking answers.

No the men running Rangers did far more than break trust with their support, they broke trust in the game and it would be more than comforting to hear those in charge of governing to look at where their processes failed and what they are doing to fix those processes so that there is no repeat. Not tell us all is/ was well when it manifestly is not.

  15. Paul, talking about ducks…

Isn’t there a billionnaire Scrooge McDuck, from Motherwell, who has wealth off the duckin’ radar and who has been a “rabbit” Rankers fan since he was a “young chick” (see what I did there?).

Despite facing the fire and/or frying pan in varous countries, in multiple incontinents, Scrooge has the “fit and proper” SFA label tattooed just above his plumber’s crack.

By all accounts, Scrooge is at this very moment winging his way to Ipox to lay golden eggs at Ally’s doorstep (with the message “Do NOT Eat” clearly marked).

Zillions of SA rands, Japanese yens and Caledonian cheques will then make there way into the Cheeky Chappie’s ample and mutiple troozer-pockets, to the delight of the “fawning” people.

Joe Cole: England can win 2014 World Cup in Brazil

    By Alistair Magowan BBC Sport

West Ham midfielder Joe Cole believes England can win the World Cup next year with a team that “excites” him.

Cole, 31, has 56 England caps and says he has not given up hope of being in Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad for Brazil.

“I’m thinking England can go there and win it,” Cole told BBC Sport.

“I know the gaffer will want to play things down and rightly so, but it excites me because I think there is enough talent in the country.”

Former Chelsea and Liverpool player Cole has played in the last three World Cups and was part of a so-called “golden generation” which also included current skipper Steven Gerrard, Chelsea’s Frank Lampard and former Manchester United midfielders David Beckham and Paul Scholes.

On being burgled – sorry for your troubles, I was burgled in 2008 and if I had the chance would still love to have 5 minutes alone with the gits that did it! The loss of a video camera along with some tapes of my sons first Christmas, Birthday, day at the beach etc. is the thing that still hurts as these were precious.
