Oft-triangulated Georgios

763

It’s good to be back.  A power outage at our datacentre on Saturday caused servers to crash and subsequent database problems.  Our thanks to Andrew in Belfast for his invaluable help, again…

Trying hard to ignore speculation of various players coming our way, plenty of time for that later in the month, although I will add a note of caution.  The fact that a journalist gets confirmation from Neil Lennon that he is able to sign a £6m player does not constitute a promise to do so.  It’s little more than bait, for those who still read such sources.

I’ve heard nothing but good things over the years about Georgios Samaras.  He is a player who flourishes on confidence, and support, and does so most often at the highest level.  In Europe he is Celtic’s out-ball, a player capable of bringing others into the game, turning defence into attack.  It is at this rarefied atmosphere that his goal-scoring has also been most effective.  Ironically his style is less effective in the SPFL, where Celtic spend far less time 80 yards from goal.

A considerable reason for the low return in the Champions League this season was that everyone knew how reliant we’d become on Georgios.  He was heavily marked; by the time the ball got to his feet, three opponents triangulated around him.

It’s no surprise he has offers from Spain, and no doubt elsewhere, to consider. If he leaves I hope his lasting memories will be cheers of support, not his harsher experiences.

Definition of poor IT planning: datacentres who host their Status page at their own datacentre. “We’re down, but you can’t read this, because we’re down.”

I do miss his witty repartee and the joyous carefree abandon with which he destroyed his detractors.

I think he was a right patronising b…..d,in fact!

  4. The reported bids for Sami are pretty good for a player with six months left on his contract. Of course whether he wants to stay will ultimately decide things, but we will do ok if he does decide to try his luck elsewhere.

Fortunately I had my own Business Continuity Plan. It mostly involved beer and telly but it was effective. :-)

  7. CQN has been responsible for an amazing amount of charitable fund raising, to such an extent that I would be reluctant to name any individuals for fear of leaving out equally generous, motivated & hard working philanthropists.

On a political front, Resolution 12 is probably the most important achievement of this site.

The dedication in the face of scepticism of Canamalar, Morrissey23, Auldheid & others should be recognised & lauded. Their efforts WILL break down the defences of those who have corrupted our game for far too long & who thought they were secure in their misdeeds.

    Well done & THANK YOU.

  8. Welcome back Paul,

    should he stay or should he go up to Sami if he feels it is time to seek out a new challenge then he goes with my best wishes;

On a £6m player/striker , any signing this window has to be a stick on 1st XI player no bench filers we have plenty of potential with the summer signings and in our youths, so if we can find a 1st XI player within our budget then sign them up whether they cost 600K or £6mill

  9. Fitting tribute to Big Georgios.

Celtic Park will be a poorer place when this GREAT Celt decides to move on.

  10. So, if people are happy to let big Sammi go for £2 million then ask yourself this! Will we get as good as him for the same money? Difficult ask methinks.

The big guy is so honest and confidence is his life blood so he responds badly to jeers and boos etc. Can’t remember Henke getting booed when he missed a penalty and he missed a few. So give Sammi the same love and support and he will flourish. Idealistic? Maybe.

Perhaps he wants to try something new. If that’s the case getting £2M now is better than nothing at the end of the season. He’s not vital for us in terms of winning the league.

I love big Sammi but do get frustrated with him now and then when he doesnt look in the mood,If he wont sign a new contract 2 million for a player who can leave in 6 months time for nothing is good business.Every player moves on wither to another team or retirement from playing and big Sammi is no different we can use the money for him in the pot for a new striker and also the money we save in wages.Sammi if you go Good Luck where ever you end up and thanks big guy for the good times.H.H.

  15. We are working on the new edition of CQN Magazine – some great stuff going into this edition.

We rely on contributions from Celtic supporters for the features and we have one piece which outlines the strengths of Peter Lawwell as Celtic’s Chief Executive. It is a very positive piece and backs the transfer policy, position re the Green Brigade issues and handling other issues in Scottish football.

We’d like to get a more critical opinion to run alongside this and if anyone fancies giving it a go could you email me – david@CQNMagazine.com

  16. Back at last, Hooray. Happy New Year

Interesting rumours on twitter , facebook and by text re press injunctions over Govan way. I remember someone on hear talking about a major story that was going to break once lawyers had checked it out. Coincidence or same story?

    Re Res 12.

Funny you say you KNOW what is going on yet turn down the opportunity to find out what is going on.

Where ignorance is bliss tis folly to be wise.

  18. Sami actually ‘gets it’, he would be a big loss to us and Celtic would be a big loss to him, I think this has been playing on his mind of late, The guy NEVER hides, even when our ‘support’ are on his case.

Last season when he came on as sub when we were 1-3 down at home to Aberdeen and he scored with the overhead kick in the 93rd minute to win the game is a memory that will last with me forever.

I hope he stays but I wish him nothing but good fortune whatever he chooses, he could have made a lot more money other places but he’s gave us nearly 8 years of his career.

  21. Big Sammi a keeper for me, adding a predator up front and a midfielder who reads the game in a forward thinking fashion would benefit him and our whole attack!!

Big Sammi gets Celtic and has done for many years through thick and thin and we would do well to remember that many have come and never got it!!

  22. Weeminger

You are probably right pal but I like the big guy. You musn’t forget that for much of his time here in Paradise he was played out of position and he came to the fore when played out wide.

Trying something different is good. We played the diamond with such great effect yet wee Neil goes back to type, why??

That may be same rumours referred to here last night about 8pm,and elsewhere,re the possibility that certain bus-owning brothers are diversifying into laundrettes.

Starry Plough f o. In my opinion most Celtic fans would agree big Sammi is a keeper. However,if he decides to leave and it is his decision we want the best possible for Celtic. H.H.

  25. Scoring in 5 consecutive away games last season away from home in Europe……no 6m centre forward is capable of doing that ….would have to be someone special….like that H enke guy…….we had no c/f for euro games and the burden was placed on Sammi…..teams could afford to deploy 3 men on him, knowing full well there was no danger coming from the forwards we had……a little too late……yes he will be lost esp in Europe big time.
