At around 13:16 tomorrow afternoon Fraser Forster will hopefully break the 40-year record of Aberdeen’s Bobby Clark for not conceding a goal in Scottish league football. Clark’s record is next up for the Celtic keeper but the British and European records are not too far away.
Apart from Celtic Park itself there would be no better place to break this record than at Tynecastle, but the most important part of the day is to secure a win. Concede early but win the game and we have done our job. Break the record and leave pointless and we will have nothing to celebrate.
Clarity has never been a prominent feature when it comes to the analysis of football finances. 2012 threw up a slew of ‘experts’, practically all of whom swallowed lines from PR people instead of explaining HMRC’s published rules on voting for or against Company Voluntary Arrangements.
Journalists were briefed on HMRC’s intentions, which filtered to the ‘experts’, soon this PR version of events was accepted an a reality. The same was going on inside football. One journalist called me back then to dispute my challenge to his assertion that Celtic would have vote to allow Newco Rangers into the SPL, and that the SPL itself was absolutely certain to vote them “back” (sic.). Celtic were never going to that way and by then the SPL tide had turned.
It was not in Celtic’s interests to have Newco parachuted into top flight football, which has become clear in the subsequent years, although many in Scotland, including a sizeable chunk of the Celtic support, thought otherwise, and that the club would vote in favour.
It was, therefore, refreshing to watch BBC Reporting Scotland last night without the 2012 flops. A new expert was found to ask the pertinent question, a £1.5m loan is fine for a short-term fix but what about the enormous long-term problems?

This is worth posting again.
You may remember back to 2011 when CQN managed to help a young family who were going through a dreadful time after the birth of their twin boys Shaeden and Cian who were both born prematurely. Unfortunately young Cian passed on to heaven while wee Shaeden fought for his life. Both boys were the sons of a CQN poster of that time Ton-Che-Dan and his wife.
If you remember back to that year and the sad passing of Pablo, a collection was made on CQN to bring Steve’s body back from Holland to allow his kids to lay their dad to rest. As ever CQN rallied together and raised way more than was required and with the agreement of CQN and both Steve’s kids we were able to help Ton Che Dan and his good lady wife.
Danny’s wife gave birth to twin baby boys a number of weeks before their due date. Unfortunately one of the boys, Cian, soon passed away after birth and it was touch and go for a number of months for Shaeden. During this time both Danny and his wife were caring for their son in hospital in Liverpool far from their home in Blackpool and Danny had to give up his work to be in Liverpool for his family. The extra money raised for Steve was sent to Danny and his family to help them through this difficult periods in their lives.

Celtic welcome Sohail Rehman to Lennoxtown

CELTIC Football Club is delighted to welcome Sohail Rehman to Glasgow. Sohail is just 21, and he is the first wheelchair-bound, fully-qualified football coach in the world.
He suffers from a disability known as spinal muscular atrophy. His real love was always football and, despite enormous difficulty, he played with his friends in the street and for a local team, until, at 13 he was forced into using a wheelchair.
However, as a passionate football fan and player, he was determined not to let the condition push him out of the game.
Sohail has completed his coaching badges, doing his Level 1 and 2 before going on to coach his local club’s under-10 team.
When asked by one of his young players: “Coach, don’t you ever feel like kicking the ball?” he replied, “You always have to be grateful for what you have. I might not be able to kick the ball, but at least I can see it…there’s always someone out there who struggles more than you.”
Sohail has also been instrumental in developing the organisation Class on Grass. The aim of the organisation is to help children enjoy sport. Class on Grass aims to get children and their parents out and about and into sport, using a style of fun, friendly, focused, skills-based coaching.
Recently Sir Alex Ferguson wrote to Sohail and said: “I am writing to congratulate you on passing your coaching badges and becoming a qualified football coach.
“It never ceases to amaze me the enthusiasm and effort people put into the game and more importantly in giving their time. May I take this opportunity to wish you all the best for the remainder of the season. Well done!”
Celtic Manager Neil Lennon was delighted to see Sohail at Lennoxtown this morning and echoed the comments of Sir Alex, adding: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Sohail to Celtic, his courage and determination is an example to us all.
“In the face of great adversity Sohail has shown that courage and determination counts for everything in overcoming obstacles.
“It is magnificent now that he will be sharing these great qualities with young players of the future and I am sure they will be inspired by all that he has achieved.”

A bit of a snooze fest this match, with no real talking points. Only thing I learnt was that Zamoras’ strip is provided by Uhlsport. And I thought they only made keepers gloves?
The Strongest (Bol) 1 Universitario (Per) 0
Never managed to watch all of this match but what I did see, was some fast football from Strongest (oddly enough most games at altitude seem to be played with more tempo).
Anyway, unlike Mexican’s Leon the night before, Universitario came, parked the bus and were happy to hit on the break . Strongest probed and prodded without much success until MOTM, Diego Wayar, scored (what the Bolivian press) called the “…..goal of the round…..”
Odd point to note here, was that due to ground sharing this was the second Libertadores tie played within 24hrs at the Estadio Siles, La Paz.
All six Brasilian teams have their round 2 games next week.

One of the Brasilian teams who stand a good chance of making it through the group stages of the Libertadores are Botafogo. However they are currently struggling to make the semi-finals of the Rio State Championships.
Last night’s draw with Volta Redonda, leaves them six points adrift of third placed Vasco. My statistically fixated mate assures me that 30 points guarantees a place. Botafogo currently sit on 12points, with six games left.
So, all that being said, this Sunday’s classico against Fluminense (and remembering they are away in the Libertadores mid-week) should be interesting. I’d bet against ‘fogo winning this one.
Flamengo
Flamengo were the most prominent Rio team in wanting to strike a deal with the Maracana stadium consortium when it reopened last year. Since then ticket prices have been (by Brasilian standards) excessive and gates correspondingly low.
This week ‘mengo fielded a reserve side (eyes on the Libertadores again) against Madureira in a midweek State championship game with a corresponding paying crowd of 2,478.
Paper’s saying today, when all the various bills and costs were divi’d up, ‘mengo’s share from the game was R$555,43 (about 125 quid). Hell mend them, I say.

I had the pleasure of picking up John Hartson about 12 years ago. An absolute gent. He was with company but spoke to me the whole journey. I told him one of the pubs I frequented had a poster with him saying all the best in Welsh. He asked where the pub was and I told him. About 2 months later he landed in the pub and bought everyone in the pub a drink. I also met him more recently in the lobby of the Hilton, I wished him good luck in his fight with cancer and he thanked me and patted me on the back. As I said before a true gent.
I picked up Robbie Keane one night as well. An arrogant tosser IMO.

I’m afraid I can’t agree regarding the importance of a win over beating the record. If we needed this win to win the league then I would be agree, but we do not. We can lose and still comfortably win the league. If I had to choose between beating the record and losing 1-0, or winning 2-1 and big Fraser losing out on the record I’d take the record.
If we lose on Saturday nobody will remember it this time next year. If we break the record we have that for much much longer, possibility forever.
I never want to see Celtic lose, and do not here either, but the suggestion is that a win in this match, at this time, is more important than the record and I don’t see it that way.

Not true, Scotland voted Tory until the early 1960’s coinciding with support of the DR switching to the Labour party. Even Glasgow had Tories, partially due to one reason we are all aware of.

This is not the first time that error has been made.
A few days ago on STV, the plank who is substitute for Raman made the same mistake as he introduced a video clip of McCoist.
During the clip McCoist said Stirling Albion, too.
At the end of the sports section the plank apologised for his mistake.
Of course, McCoist never apologises for anything.
