Those moving on in the summer

1021

I’ve always cautioned against judging a player who has been out for an extended period but being hooked at halftime last night looks like an ominous sign for Derk Boerrigter, who sparkled for 30 minutes on his debut against Ross County earlier in the season but has come nowhere close to that form since.

Injuries stopped him in his tracks that day against County, and several times since, but whatever the reason, we’ve not seen anything like what the player is capable of, and at 27, he is likely to be looking for first team action elsewhere next season.

After last night’s game Neil Lennon spoke of the possibility of signing and losing players over the summer transfer window, which starts in three weeks.  Buying well is crucial, and Celtic didn’t do that last summer, but getting those ‘no longer in the manager’s plans’ off the books as early as possible is also important.

Last August we offloaded Lassad, probably by parting with a bundle of cash in the process.  This is not a precedent Celtic will have been keen to set, but it’s better to have the decks cleared than have an unproductive player linger around for a year.

Anyone starting less than a third of the games he is available for selection should be looking for pastures new, especially with new arrivals expected this summer.

Boerrigter has been an absolute dud, total waste of money

  2. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Buying well is crucial, so no more taking a chance on players with more arthroscopies in their palmares than goals.

Wooooffftt agree with entire article. Boerrigter must be for the off, oddly enough his performance wasn’t a letdown last night, it was what most of us expected. I did think Pukki had a really decent game, he’s got a football brain in there.

  5. We should never sign players who have a poor fitness record. Never. It’s too big a gamble.

It doesn’t matter how much ability a has unless he’s fit to perform.

I’d far rather have a dependable athlete on the park than have millions of pounds worth of talent spending most of their careers in the treatment room.

  6. I like Pukki but he is easily knocked off the ball.

    Prefer him in midfield.

fieldofdrams- this isn’t ole Hugh Keevins’ Hotline, you kno.

    Although sometimes I wonder.

Anyways, VVD excepted we seem to have cornered the market in unflying Dutchmen over the years.

  10. Since last summer’s transfers were on the whole poor, it is vital we get it right this summer.

2 bad summer windows in a row will set us back in Europe if not the SPFL.

Of the 6 signings last summer only Van Dijk has been a success. Balde, Pukki & Boeriggter have been expensive flops, jury is still out on Biton (although he was starting to look good before getting injured) and Mouyokolo has never been fit to play.

January signings were both good with Griffiths & Johansen playing their part and establishing themselves as first team regulars very quickly.

Maybe we should be looking closer to home a bit more than we do, as well as trawling through other unglamorous leagues to find another Wanyama or Van Dijk.

Think a huge task we have and IMO our number one priority is to keep the quality we have.

Last summer was poor, maybe Lenny was looking to inject pace into the team and that became an over sought attribute.

    Hail Hail

  13. The great Liverpool side of the 1970s and early ’80s had a policy that they would never sign a player unless he had turned out for a certain very high percentage of games over the past few seasons. They never took the risk that any player’s injury worries were behind him, regardless of his potential ability. Unless he was proven to be robust and durable, they weren’t interested.

That didn’t work out too badly for them.

  15. have i entered a time warp?

looking at this mornings posts, im reading comments on bringing back kenny miller, naill mcginn, artur boruc and gary hooper

is that because none of us have enough football knowledge to suggest other players – hopefully our scouts have their brains in forward gear and not reverse

as for players to get rid of, definately balde and dirk, and also pukki because despite having a football brain, he is far too lightweight.

i would add kayal into that mix as well, because again despite him having positives, he just seems a liability to me

i wouldnt be totally oppossed to signing craig gordon, but it would have to be pay as you play for an initial period, he is far too injury prone to risk a long term contract straight off the bat, though i would much prefer getting someone else

finally, i think it would be a good move to sign dariusz wdowczyk as cover for izzy :-)

We take a punt on every player we sign. That’s our place in the world.

A punt that we can take young talent and turn it into performance, something we seem rather effective at.

A punt that we can take a broken player and mend him – not something we do often.

A punt that we can take an experienced player that has some but not all of the top attributes and improve him – most of our failures are in this dept, Commons being the exception lately.

We simply don’t have the dough to build a team from proven top professionals. Most of our signings have a weakness, and on balance, the coaching staff think they can do something effective with them.

It’s not impacting on their share price which is up more than 10% since Tuesday.

    ==

Yes interesting. It has risen 8-10% on buys valuing £11,000. Market manipulation? Propping up the share price? A 10% rise on the share price based on buys valued at 0.08% of the current value of Rangers?

Of course it could be entirely innocent with small investors buying in the hope of picking up discount shares in a new share offering.

Or it might be a desperate act of exchanging shares between allies at inflated prices to give impression of a healthy company.
