Riches available for Ronny, now let Imran retire to Charlotte Sq

424

The point was made several times below yesterday’s article that Ronny Deila needs a full strength team on the park tomorrow, as well as an impressive performance and result, which is hard to argue with.

The possibility that Scott Brown could return, as well as potential debuts for Aleks Tonev, Wakaso Mubarak, Stefan Scepovic and John Guidetti gives the manager an embarrassment of riches.  Enormous changes are needed, but their introduction needs to be measured.  Aberdeen will arrive having beaten us home and away last season; their Cup win at Celtic Park [a successful ground all round for them recently]was particularly impressive.

The Scottish media were clearly briefed that Mike Ashley was set to dump ownership of Newcastle United to take control of the dump in Govan, which was reported in good faith, but unfortunately for those hoping the Sports Direct owner would buy into the Rangers International share issue will be disappointed.  This morning a statement from Ashley read, “I will not be participating in the Open Offer which closes at 11am today, Friday September 12, 2014”.

I’m sure the Easdales and our man Philip Nash have another buyer swooping to the rescue.  Maybe our other pal Imran!

In a busy morning at Newco they settled with former director Imran Ahmed, who had claimed £625k in monies owed and costs.  You may consider Ahmed has a brass-plated neck to squeeze the pips from the club he co-founded two years ago, but when so many others in the management team have been superbly compensated, there was little chance he would hold his hands up and leave without consideration.

Hopefully the Scottish media will allow him to retire to Charlotte Square and put the matter behind him, before any embarrassing insolvency event, as is the way around these parts.

Many thanks for the magnificent response to the Magners’ competition, which has now closed.  Special thanks to those of you who helped Mary’s Meals at this difficult time for aid agencies in Africa.

I have the photos from the second and third school kitchens you financed for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  The mood on the blog has been so…. challenging in recent times I wasn’t sure how to introduce anything off-message, but we’ll profile them soon.

There is also a survey coming up next week.  I’ve been working with a (proper) academic from our community who suggested we should record exactly who we, the Celtic support, are, in 2014.  Planning to run from Monday, so look out for it.

The draw for tomorrow’s tickets will be made shortly so check your inbox.

Andrew Neather: London as a city state? Only in our dreams

If London seceded we’d need our own currency, but investors would soon be piling into the London Pahnd

Keep us sweet: if the Scots deserve more control over their own affairs and finances, is it too much to ask for a bit of the same for Britain’s biggest proto-state? (Picture: Getty)

    Andrew Neather

    A A A

    Friday 12 September 2014

With Westminster’s panicked promise this week of huge devolution of power to Scotland, English regions are lining up for a piece of the action. Nottingham Labour MP Graham Allen has demanded a “federal parliament”. Pasty-fuelled separatists Mebyon Kernow want home rule for Cornwall (as a Devonian, I say let them go — then mine the Tamar). And an extraordinary poll this week suggested that almost one in five Londoners — and nearly half of 25-to 34-year-olds — think the capital would be better off if it split from England.

A London city state: it’s evidently not going to happen, but what a glittering prize, eh? We’ve got the population — 8.3 million, bigger than Switzerland or Denmark (and Scotland and Wales combined). We’ve got the economy, creating most of the growth since the recession, with around 22 per cent of the UK’s GDP — close to £300 billion a year. That’s about the same as Poland or Belgium.

The envious provinces wouldn’t be able to boycott us: half of them would still need to come here to work. Conversely, we’ve got a cultural scene and range of restaurants that mean we don’t really need to leave, unless you want to show your kids what a real live cow or Ukip county councillor looks like.

Scots nationalists protest that theirs is a different country and culture. Tell us about it. Have they ever tried going from south London to rural Somerset? Where you ask for a coffee and you’re relieved if you get filter not instant? Where whole villages appear to have no wifi at all? Where strangers make eye contact?

If London seceded we’d need our own currency, but investors would soon be piling into the London Pahnd (known colloquially as a Shard). Border controls might require a Lycra-clad Swiss Guards regiment to enforce them. And London’s secession would leave south-east England doughnut-shaped — though no sillier a shape than, say, Croatia, or Rome without the Vatican City.

Then again, being a city state might get lonely. Public debate would become insular; our TV stations and papers would retreat into navel-gazing about the Mayor or Doge’s new cycling schemes. Our economy would become more and more distorted by international wealth. Without stories about provincial life, swathes of London would have little to discuss beyond schools and house prices. We’d grow paranoid about the rest of the country’s media saying biased things about our independence.

And we’d be cut off from our shared history. Without a hinterland, we’d be adrift from the rest of Britain.

The truth is, we’re better together. But if the Scots deserve more control over their own affairs and finances, is it too much to ask for a bit of the same for Britain’s biggest proto-state? You know, just to keep us sweet?

To be honest if I was from the south I’d probably feel very much the same.

Better together? On balance probably not.

Perhaps, perhaps. Still don’t believe that these types of comments are befitting of this board.

  11. Aberdeen will play like they awe ways play, one up front, and try catch us on the break, maybe if it’s tight in the first half with ten mins. To go put two up, and the same in the second half, it’s the same way they play us all the time, and long balls up izzys wing, just have to make sure the back door is shut with three at the back, the other seven gonny have to work there arses off but, Willo Flood to have 5 fouls in the first half, and the same in the second half.

Pullet or what ever the feck ez name is, to dive at least three times in the game, Aberdeen to waste time right from the KO , unless down a goal early.

Izzy gonny need cover when going forward.

RD read this and you’ll win 2-0 oh! And your very welcome ;) HH

  12. An old time classic and how incredibly apt.

There’s a man up in Ulster you all know him well,

For Catholics and Republicans he’d chase in hell,

His name’s Ian Paisley and that is the man,

That the Catholics and Republicans just couldn’t give a damn.

Well Ian he died and to Heaven did go,

“Ah, where did you come from?” Saint Peter wanted to know,

“Sure I’m from loyal Ulster!”, he said with a sneer,

Said Peter, “I’m from the Bogside, you won’t get in here!”

  13. Team shape for tomorrow.

    1-2-1-7 formation.

Like 9 year old kids with everyone wanting to run up and score and a couple of crap, large kids forced to stay back.

Loads of mentol attacking footie. Chances galore.

    Score prediction? Nothing each!
