Improvements clear two weeks on from home Astra game

2373

It’s a bit frustrating being so close to qualification for the knock out stages last night before a momentary lapse cost us late in the game, but there were plenty of positives.  60 minutes into last month’s game at Celtic Park against Astra, taking four points from them looked very ambitious.  We played considerably better last night in the corresponding home game, or in the home game against Dinamo Zagreb.

Celtic are functioning better in midfield, while defensively they’re also looking solid.  We acknowledged some weeks ago that without Guidetti or Commons we would struggle to create and execute chances, and so it proved.

With Anthony Stokes also out the picture, Leigh Griffiths got the nod to replace Stefan Scepovic and instantly brought some drive to the forward line.  He was unfortunate that his ‘goal’ was disallowed for a debatable infringement, but he just brings the kind of purpose inside the box that we didn’t have until his arrival.

We’re now four games unbeaten in this competition, and we’re improving.  The evidence suggests that Salzburg have also improved since we took a point from them on match day one.  Last night’s result in Zagreb was impressive, but Salzburg will face their stiffest test of the group at Celtic Park.

Still fancy our chances of winning the group.

  1. Now watched the whole of last nights game…

We were clearly the better side ( that wasn’t clear in the home tie) and certainly should have scored more.

Couldn’t see them scoring…until they did!

Thought it was a competent performance.

Some folk were criticising SJ …I’m amazed I thought he was our best man.

    Expect us to qualify.

I’d imagine then, if both Salzburg and Celtic have ‘made progress’ since the 2-2 draw, the game at Parkhead should be a good yardstick as to who’s progressed the most.

  7. Will the great Celtic support fill the stadium for the must win game with Salzburg, or are we just.a club like all others?

  14. The group is wide open now. I don’t fancy our changes away in Croatia. 50/50 at best. We did well against Salzburg but they have kicked on and hammered teams ever since. I’d like to think a win is possible but if I was a betting man I’d say a draw was the most likely outcome which to us is pointless. It would then come down to Zagreb away and relying on a point.

Do you think that the shareholders of the old Rangers TUPE’d across their shares to the ‘new’ Rangers?

Draw against Salzburg and a 2-1 defeat in Zagreb would see us through. Or a 3-2 defeat, or a 4-3 defeat, or a 5-4 defeat…

  17. Paul67

If we beat the ‘caffeine junkies’, we would have to win Zagreb to top the group.

Red Bull have Astra at home in the final game.

It may be that if we have already qualified by the 6th game, the Croatians may not be up for it.

Unlikely, therefore, that we’ll be group winners.

  18. We’ve got 2 tough games coming up…… I’d say we are more likely to sneak a point against an already through Salzburg, than picking up points in Zagreb…. A draw in both games however would be smashing

  19. No it wouldn’t David. Its not head to head its overall goal difference. Obviously all calculations are based on Zagreb beating Astra in Romania, if they don’t we are through without winning another point.

At present we are plus 2 and Zagreb are minus three. If they beat us by one thats a 2 goal swing and they would have had to beat Astra by 3. If they beat us by 2 that’s a 4 goal swing and a 1 goal victory against Astra would have been enough.

  20. Hard to fancy us winning the group. That would require two wins…one against the best team in the group (there is no way we will ever beat Zagreb 5-1 on their own patch), and the other away from home against a half decent Balkan outfit. We rarely record away wins in Europe against anyone other than minnows. We must reverse our dodgy home form against Salzburg or the potential still remains for a very nervy night in Zagreb. We are improving though, just get through Celtic, then we get Guidetti, Forrest and Commons in the mix next year.

  21. the long wait is over on

Sorry to rain on anyone’s parade, not usually my style , but while we may well have improved the simple fact is that we should have beaten that team last night.

They were a really poor outfit and we couldn’t score more than one or hold on to a one goal lead to see us actually qualify.

I think last night was a very, very poor result.

Agree with suggestion to spread the quotes to include other rangers rfc rip legends like Walter, allee, goffee.

Don’t like the final para as much as many good fans won’t attend and it’s almost hubristic in how it looks forward to dispatching the new little club.

Personally I’d also like to stress that we find the OF tag distasteful in any case as we define ourselves alone as supporters of our club.

Finally would be great to get a quid from a fan of every club in Scotland (or top flight) so that it can’t sim

Thanks for all you work regarding everything for ” The Famous Glasgow CELTIC” appreciate all your endeavors.

Last night sitting up a 1 o’clocking morning (does that seem right) due to problems with internet streaming I had to rely on updates on the CQN network to my phone. Thanks guys.

We had us some guys who will never be happy with Ronny’s selection even if he had Pele, Messi and Marradona in his selection. I tried before about updates but could not continue due to being too involved in the game. Thanks to all who can contribute to “live Updates”.

One poster, who shall be nameless, kept posting “Craig Gordon saves AGAIN” (his capitals not mine) That is his JOB, never once did he mention Scott Brown/Lustig?ETC kicked the ball (their job). Craig Gordon is employed to SAVE the ball so is only doing his part as a team member.

I also see on another “Celtic” website “Celtic HELD to a draw away from home”?

In Europe I see it us holding the opposition to a draw.We may be HELD to a draw at Parkhead but held “them” to a draw away from home.

Am I getting paronoid or is the old bevy kicking in
