I got it wrong on Malky MacKay. In August I wrote, “Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all. He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff. That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.”
Then up stepped Dave Whelan, a man who is widely respected in the sports retail and football, largely for not being Mike Ashley, but who has watched his club slip from the Premier League and now sit in a relegation spot in the Championship.
Football is harsh enough without clubs creating their own distractions. Wigan and Malky are unlikely to prosper.
So Craig Whyte faces up to four weeks in jail if/when he is arrested. You have to wonder what his police interviews will reveal. Craig doesn’t strike me as someone to take a fall for anyone.
Redundancies are sometimes necessary for a company losing money and without the resources to pay bills, but Newco Rangers cutting the payroll by 10, none of them from the well paid football department, is pointless tokenism. Savings made will keep the lights on for only a few days more, so why do it?
I have some sympathy for their new management. They need to make significant cuts into football costs, but those costs are contracted to the end of the season, or beyond, these cuts are perhaps a gesture towards what’s ahead.
Management have a problem, how do they meet commitments to creditors and protect shareholder value? No bank has ever extended credit to this club, and I suspect HMRC have them on a short leash. There will be some trade creditors, but they are likely to be of the face painter variety. By far the biggest creditor, and therefore most influential after an insolvency event, is Mike Ashley. He would be in a position to appoint an administrator, and to approve any settlement.
Dave King continues to play an important role, encouraging fans not to support or spend with the club. I fully endorse his views.
King still thinks he is playing poker but his hand has been called and we all know he’s all out of aces. His rantings are not part of a coherent plan. His calls could precipitate the end, but he has no way of transforming this into a new dawn.
Remember to keep an eye on the long-term fundamentals, you cannot operate a large football club with the size of Newco’s infrastructure without regular Champions League income. Nothing that has happened in the last three years has changed this.

Is Jamesy fit for Saturday ?
I think Wigan have a clause to cut Malky’s contract short if findings do not go in his favour.
Why is it taking so long?
Paul, you are 100% right.
and do we leave the stamp . post . postmen . topic behind.
shame.
better topic than macjays nonsense
Our Craigy managed to run up an HMRC bill of £9M in his one year reign.
Can we be sure HMRC are not higher up the creditor list than MA ?

————–
Im not sure about that – it was also mentioned yesterday by Adrian Dungham of TalkSpurt
Malky has already admitted what he done, has apologised and is taking some sort of diversity training, so Dave Whelan knew exactly what the ‘offence’ was but still hired him. Im not sure what more the FA can add to it that will change Whelans mind, and so I dont see why he would then add that clause into the contract
Neil canalmar – HMRC are not a creditor of the new club.
Paul 67,
IMO all people are due a second chance ( even football managers) however I am glad we did not give Malky MacKay that chance.
Roy Keane, Malky Mackay; we have escaped a banana skin.
Here’s hoping RD and JC will prove to be a shrewd choice, although only time will tell.
They deserve time.

Is there a plausible explanation why the SPFL video clips are displaying the Sevco scoreline v Alloa as 1-0? I could have sworn I saw Alloa put the ball in the back of the net to silence those genteel folks in the crowd wearing blue.

Are you saying HMRC are being paid weekly ?
Foghorn – I suspect the option will be invoked pronto if the FA decide e.g. to ban Malkie from managing for any period of time.

yes, that would be the only way i could think that the clause would be useful for wigan if it exists at all. but whelan must be pretty sure that he isnt going to get banned for any great number of games, if he gets banned at all, and i would think he will be right
there will be a fine, and maybe a very small stadium ban
foghorn leghorn
there will be a fine, and maybe a very small stadium ban
———-
and if he does it again he will also be banned from big stadiums :-)
Hope Malky does well, but did not want him at us.Same old, same old.
The huns are endless fun.Every day they steal the headlines.I hope Craig does make his way back.Cant wait for him to be questioned.
Who is next at the huns for redundancy?.Maintenance staff?.Do they have any left?.Looking at the stadium, you have to wonder.
Paul is right, nothing they can do with the playing squad, until their contracts run out.Maybe punt the bigger earners in January, although, who is worth anything?.The left back,Mc Leod. Not a great list,is it.Totally banjaxed.
The fun is,some deluded huns on hun media discussing who they should bring in January.
It goes on and on,great viewing.Meanwhile Dundee on Saturday, then another must win against Salzburg.Great to be a Tim.

They did not silence them.In fact the boos got a lot louder.

Some facts on OBFA
The number of arrests has dropped overall from 268 in 12/13 to 203 in 13/14 a drop of 25%.
The number of Celtic arrests has dropped from 68 to 44, a drop of 35%. To compare, the highest group is The Rangers whose numbers dropped from 85 to 59, a drop of 30%. There were rises for clubs Aberdeen (11), Motherwell (19), Raith Rovers (9) and St Miren (6). There were falls for Ayr, Dundee, Hamilton and Hibernian.
7% were under 16, 39% 16 – 20 and 41% 21-30; 87% overall. That’s up from 74% in 12/13.
55 (27%) were under the influence of alcohol and 4 (2%) drugs. This seems lower than might be expected? No change on 12/13 %ages.
73 (36%) were classified as ‘hate crimes’ of which 60 (30%) were ‘religious’. This is down from 47% and 40% in 12/13. Threatening or challenging to fight numbered 99 (49% – up from 44%) and support of ‘terrorism’ /loss of life in 57 (28% – up from 17%)
Targeted religion was Catholicism 77% (down from 83%), Protestantism 18% (up from 15%) with minor numbers for jews and Islam.
Council areas noted Glasgow at 35% (down from 42%), North Lanarkshire at 21% (up from 3%) and Edinburgh at 12 % (up from 9%).
Locus shows 54% in a football ground (down from 62%) and 34% in a ‘main street’ (up from 22%)
In relation to stadia Celtic Park was the major venue with 23 (21%) down from 40 (24%). Ibrox figures were 17 (16%) down from 33 (20%). From this we can conclude that it is much more likely that a Celtic arrest will happen within the home stadia for supporters than it is for The Rangers who have a higher overall arrest rate.
Based on the data and volumes (and expected behaviours) it is clear that very few Celtic supporters can have been detained for abusing/offending protestants but that significant numbers have been detained re ‘terrorism’, mostly in the stadium. Supporters of The Rangers are still being detained in significant numbers for anti-Catholic activity in the main mostly away from the stadium.
What may be surprising is that there have been more detentions at Airdrie and Firhill combined than Celtic Park. This seems a strange demographic.
The 3 largest fixtures were Motherwell v Celtic (24), Airdrie v The Rangers (13) and bizarrely Falkirk v Raith Rovers (10).
‘Victims’ were described as ‘Community’ 118 (58% – up from 46%), individuals 73 (36% – down from 38%), Polis 24 (12% – down from 13%) and workers (stewards?) 14 (7% – down from 11%). This contrasts with anti-sectarian breach of the peace where the majority of ‘victims’ have always been polis.
Much has been made on the site on the ‘low’ levels of ‘success’ in the courts. There is a caution here in that data does not reflect concluded process only. In relation to concluded process (accepted guilt and guilt after trial) the data suggests about a 65% conviction rate.
Court proceedings were started in 160 (79%) of the 203 cases. There have been 43 convictions from this. Some are comparing these 2 numbers and inferring a 1:4 conviction rate but this is a false reading. Of the 160 cases only 66 have been concluded with a conviction number of 43 giving the 65% ‘success’ rate.
This rate may not hold up as guilty pleas and ‘easy’ cases generally conclude first.
There is no published further breakdown of this data either in relation to club supporter of type of offence.
Of the 43 convictions only 7 have resulted in a banning order. The vast majority are dealt with via fine.

I dont believe in the Champions League assertion.
The huns would have coped just fine should their supremacism have died with the old club.
If they would have built a team with 3rd division style wages and a 3rd division class team to have gained promotion and cut their cloth to suit each time they managed to climb through the leagues they would have been fine.
Unfortunately for them and thanks to a thing called Karma, their we arra peepil mentality demanded they got what they wanted like a spoilt child at christmas it the turkeys are coming home to roost.
All I want for christmas is for the band aid to be removed as slowly as possible
Eyes Wide Open
But would the peepul have shown up to see such a level of team? It costs a lot of money just to keep Rangers running, regardless of what team is on the pitch. Attendances were very much needed (ultimately they have proven not to be enough either).

” Remember to keep an eye on the long-term fundamentals, you cannot operate a large football club with the size of Newco’s infrastructure without regular Champions League income. Nothing that has happened in the last three years has changed this.”
I firmly believe that it was the total dependence on CL money for survival that was behind the season of Honest Mistakes and thereafter.
It astounds me that those responsible for governance and sustainability at SFA and SPFL have not yet brought in a break even principle relevant to Scottish football that omits or limits CL money from the calculation.
If a club has a surplus from CL some of it could be used for the general good of the game or spend it on wages in ratio to of say 1 out of every 3 seasons on higher player wages commensurate with the contract position over its players remuneration for 3 seasons.
If a club is lucky enough to be assured of a higher more regular access to CL money then surplus goes on improving the service to supporters eg reduced prices, more professional stewarding, much better outdoor facilities to improve the time spent before a match balancing a pie and Bovril in one hand whilst shaking the hand of a fellow supporter with the other. God a living wage might even become a non issue.
Do you know if there has been anyone totally independent commissioned to look into how our game has landed in the grubber with proposals to get it out and keep it out? Is anyone even thinking about it?
eyes wide open
they learned nothing and were led by a bunch of spivs who played the supremist card all the way and have left with their pockets full.
