Inter Milan as Stein’s 50th looms

819

The last two teams out of the pots for today’s Europa League draw left to former European Champions.  Celtic will face Inter Milan, who they have met twice before in European competition.  The teams faced in the European Cup Final in 1967, when Celtic won the tournament, and again in the European Cup Semi-final in 1972, when Inter progressed on penalties after two 0-0 draws.

It’s not the draw I would have handpicked but it’s a great draw from many perspectives.  Inter will bring genuinely tier-one talent to Celtic Park, and provide Ronny Deila and the squad with an invaluable chance to test their progress.

The games will take place a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein becoming Celtic manager and set his team on the road to dismantling La Grande Inter.  History is made of great stories and no sporting event in history has been so infused by story telling than the first meeting between these clubs.

If all these stories teach us anything it’s to fear no one.  Bring it on.

Among many great features, we have an interview with Dixie Deans in the 2015 CQN Annual, see above, who among many things, discusses “that penalty”.  Still time to order yours for Christmas.

You can also order the CQN Annual and DVD bundle here. It’s a great offer, check it out – oh, and there’s tons of photos, fresh stories and comment on the first time Inter faced the green and white hoops.

  1. Great draw for Celtic in regards to history finances and possible progression to the next round.

Cue the obvious stories about the 1967 final and seventies semis in the press so we can expect some excitement looking forward to this game

Meanwhile in another part of town the thought of months of European Cup chit chat over the airwaves and in the press has your average sevconian looking for an uninhabited cave where they can sojourn till it all goes away

Tricky one. You’ve swapped a free bed with your pal’s older sister, age undeclared but exceeding 80 years old, at the price of letting your missus loose with the credit card in Galleria Emanuele.

I guess self respect has no cost…

  3. I’m a bit perplexed by this statement at the bottom of a BBC Sport article today:

“Rangers, who were founded in 1872, had never played outside the top division from the formation of the Scottish League in 1890 until they were demoted in 2012, a year after winning their 54th Scottish title.”

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30475395

Please would someone explain this to me, as I thought that Rangers (1872) no longer existed, having gone bust, and that a new club were smuggled into the SFL ahead of other, more deserving clubs.

So Inter are 12th are they. Means they will be putting their heart and soul into the europa league to get a champions league place next season.

    Bring it on :-)

  8. Not sure who said it on the last page, but they were dead right when they said this draw is exactly what Europe after Christmas is all about.

Big Draw, Full House at Celtic Park and excitement brimming.

    Canny wait!

  9. Had a little read of the times whilst having a coffee, spat my coffee out with a little chuckle.

According to the game section of this paper, hotshot Max Power a young Tranmere Rovers player is being scouted by a host of teams including us and premier league teams, Sevco were also mentioned as scouting him.

First of all, where has this ‘Journo’ been?

Secondly, where can this mob afford him or his wages if on a free.

Thirdly, don’t buy papers, or bother reading the free ones in Caffe Nero!

Great draw. They are poor at the moment.

    ————————————————————-

The definition of “poor” in the Serie A is ofcourse relative. AC Milan were “poor” in their domestic league last season and they gubbed us home and away.

  11. Thought we might get Inter. We are capable of progressing though it will be tough.

A great carrot for potential signings, and maybe the top tier opened:-)

Very true, its a real test for this team!

If we can overcome them it would be fantastic considering how we faired against Legia and then Maribor!

  13. SOT,

re Medel, is that the same one who played for Cardiff last season?

If so, I thought he was nothing special, but he did ok in the WC.

Can see him and Broony having a wee set-to once or twice. Our Captain will need to keep the heid as im sure he will be targeted to try to lose his rag.

Robert88. We hope we have improved since Legia and Maribor we want to play the big named teams to raise our profile in Europe. If we have a full strength side for the two games I think it could be a close run tie we should have Guidetti,Denyair, Lustig and maybe a couple of new signings and 60,000 cheering us on at home.H.H.

    I assume when you refer to a first-tier team,you mean a top-tier team.

As in it will be open.

Gonna be a great night. I expect us to be more street-savvy than last time we played some cheating lot from Italy.
