Sympathy for the ref, cynicism for SFA

648

Yesterday’s referee Craig Thomson is getting it from all quarters but I have some sympathy for him.  He saw the Scott Brown tackle and took no action.  The challenge was executed with extreme force but also with laser-like accuracy.  It didn’t injure or foul anyone.

Aiden Connolly dived to win Dundee United’s penalty.  Thomson could not have seen an infraction, because there wasn’t one, but when a player attempts to con a referee like this, it’s impossible for the ref to get it right all the time.

Virgil got involved with Butcher, both players on the ground, carelessly kicking away.  Both should have been cautioned.  Fifa guidelines entitle the referee to interpret this behaviour as a sending off offence, if he deems it appropriate- however, Thomson didn’t see it and took no action until his assistant, Graham Chambers, got involved.

It was evident from the length of time Thomson spoke to Chambers that the assistant was getting the third degree on what he claimed to have seen.  The ref asked several questions of his assistant to verify how sure he was of what he saw.  It was clear this was not corroborated by the Thomson’s own account.

Neither of them saw Nadir Ciftci kick Scott Brown on the head.  I didn’t see it either until I watched the incident a couple of times.

Chambers got things spectacularly wrong.  Like most others he missed the worst incident (Ciftci), advised the referee into red carding two players who should have been cautioned, and, to demonstrate how flustered he was, failed to notice which United player he put his arm on and led away from the action.

When a referee has an assistant, and a player like Connolly, to work with, he’s going to have a bad day.

As far as retrospective action is concerned: Scott Brown is in the clear, the referee saw what he did and was happy with it.  Ciftci presumably will be banned for violent conduct.  Connolly should be banned for simulation, unless Ronny is right that this rule applies only when players wear green and white hoops.  Paton should have his red card rescinded.

Virgil van Dijk has a case to have his red card reduced to a yellow – however – this being the SFA, I don’t think that will happen, as he is tied to Calum Butcher’s situation, and that is more complex.  If Virgil has his card reduced to a yellow, so too should Butcher, but Butcher was later booked – which would have been his second yellow.

A player who the assistant referee intended to remove from the field would not have been on to receive his booking had the assistant not nabbed the wrong player.  He also didn’t have the benefit of taking his caution into account.

The SFA will stick their fingers in their ears and insist the assistant’s initial interpretation was right, just to avoid the unholy mess of banning Butcher for two yellow cards while not banning the Celtic player, or deciding that Butcher’s (actual) yellow card should be ignored due to the player unfairly missing out on a caution.

Countdown is on to Friday night’s CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite, tickets will be in the post today.

Between now and then you can win a Celtic jersey signed by the 2008 squad, who won one of the most remarkable titles in our history.  All proceeds go towards building a fourth CQN school kitchen in Malawi for Mary’s Meals.

It’s been humbling watching people come forward and do their bit in recent weeks.  Tickets cost £5 each, you know how valuable this is to those kids and families in Malawi.  Buy your ticket here, or click the link at the bottom of that page to buy a book of tickets.

Friday’s programme is about to go to press…  The wee guy with the spoon is not from a stock photo, he’s been served at a kitchen YOU PAID FOR last year.  Stunning stuff.

I thought Commons was raging yesterday and knew he was gagged by disrepute rules.

I think he could have been smarter with some of his answers but when the CEO is trying to distance himself and the club from the word republican we can hardly blame a football player for no being ready for bullshit being accredited to him.

I don’t remember KC saying there should have been 4 reds but I do remember tanner saying he said it.

KC simply said there were four fouls and did not identify who committed them.

Least that’s how I remember it

Let me put this on record.

Celtic should analyse what is passed to the compliance officer

( as will this case be ) to review fairness and consistency, I am sure we have the resource, and that all other ordinary clubs do the same.

This persons need is highlighted all too frequently, when there is controversy

in most closely contested Celtic games.

The real villain of the piece was Ciftci whom the Sky team of analyists

completely and deliberately ignored, but harked back to Scott Brown

being to blame, despite him being punished enough with a mere

    kick in the head.

Yes, the officials were incompetent including Thompson who went on to rubber stamp this by giving the non penalty, before the DU player had time to complete his

    simulation.

If we want to forgive and forget a catalogue of previous ‘mibbery,’ then we are a bi product, and symptomatic of why R.C. Ogilvie is still in office

p.s. My original point included challenging ‘every rabid Hack’

Whatever the club do or don’t do officially of publically to address the football culture, our manager hasn’t refrained from comment.

Only last week, he had a go at Sky, followed by a swipe at the Compliance Officer in respect of retrospective sanctions on diving and the selectivity of those sanctions.

He is one man who won’t let his career be hijacked by actions outwith his control.

I only hope the club back him, publically or privately.

Is it possible to get a bet on Big Virgil being the only player suspended on Sunday ? I think that was the Linesman’s M.O. when he stepped into the incident !

  8. Paul67,

Disagree completely on VVD, funny why people refuse to trust their own eyes, VVD was assaulted twice and committed no fouls.

This is all down to the SFA trying to fix matches using officials

  9. Infrequent lurker these days so please be gentle.

Not sure how the debate is developing but the pitch was awful.

Worryingly it was meant to be — DU need to be sanctioned for the state of it.

Looked as if it had been heavily forked, some sand added — no irony please — and then left.

That it was not rolled was a disgrace — JMcN was happy to take his chances with the divots.

To shame on Scottish football that this spectacle was offered up to the UK and beyond.

That and the Media tart / girly man that is CT working his ego as the MIB.

Does he really practice giving out red and yellow cards in the bathroom mirror?

What a complete erse that man is …

And worse — the stand side linesman.

I give you a complete zoomer that talked CT into the two early sendings off.

Has this guy got previous as a complete walloper?

    Wasted the game.

  10. Help me here with some specifics but was Butcher the player who got tangled up with VVD?

If he was he was the one who did more in the stramash.

As VVD tried to get up he had a blatant kick at him.

Didn’t do much damage but the intent was there.

  11. After the ref strike only an idiot would give the SFA and it’s refs the benefit of the doubt

Stunned, tbh,at your defence of Thomson. There may be truth in what you say, laying blame at the assistant over the sending off.

There is little defence for him subsequently-nor in fact prior to that, bearing in mind his ambivalence over the early tackle on Anto.

You frequently defend this ref more than others, fair and impartial, has to be to preserve his FIFA status, etc.

Yet few of us are of the same understanding. IMO,he is,has been, always will be a crock of the highest order. He does what he can get away with.

A good referee does not exist in Scotland. Impartiality and professionalism are not things to have on your CV in that profession.

  13. P67

    You are having a laugh.

    CT was terrible yesterday.

He missed the horrendous tackle on AS that was 4 minutes late and 5 yards from his nose.

That is where all the issues that flowed started — SB obviously thought it was open season and decided to hand out what we had just been given.

  14. SFA

    Paul 67,

I think with a decent lawyer, Celtic can pick a hole in the VVD sending off.

Presumably the refs report says something along lines of

    – VVD kicked out against Paton – incorrect

    – VVD kicked out against Chambers – so why send off Paton ?

    – The Paton sending off isn’t mentioned – so who did VVD get involved with?

The only defence I can see is the Dougie Dougie response

  17. There’s another area where I have a little sympathy for refs. They’re being hung out to dry on the basis of replays. Replays they don’t have access to at the time of the decision.

I think it’s about time we brought in the use of video replays for the ref.

  23. West End of East End on

I thought Thomson was being cute yesterday by not covering his mouth when speaking. He knew the camera’s would be on him, he also knew by the position of his stance that they would lip read what he was saying allowing him to be in the clear and the blame, quite rightly going to the linesman.

He got the Pen wrong but if it had been at the other end I would have been screaming for it…

  24. Sorry for writing last week that the achilles heel of Ronnie’s type of football is bad pitches (Dundee U must have read it).

What is he to do. if he wishes to compete in Europe (as most on here wish I think) he must basically keep the ball on the floor and retain possession. When you come across pitches like yesterday’s this philosophy is sorely tested.

I thought yesterday, that, to take off Forrest would have been the biggest mistake in the game. Our only chance imo was forrest running at the Dundee U defence. I feel his confidence is pretty low as is Stokes but that is no excuse for the constant vilification they both receive on here by so called Celtic supporters. We are all in this club together and should support our club through tick and thin.

I believe Forrest will play a huge role before this season is over.

MVP yesterday NB he look bloody good as a CB except for one slip.

LG has the right the stuff, anyone else missing a penalty in Cup QF would have slunk away, but LG stood up and showed us what character is all about.

  25. Some people seem to be forgetting the disgraceful tackle in the opening minutes on Anthony Stokes which did not even get a booking. From then on Celtic players were not prepared to be kicked around the park and responded in kind.

Passing football was well nigh impossible on a terrible surface and hence the long ball game and Dundee Utd probably deserved the draw battling with nine men. If ever there was a reason for a season change this was it as many teams in Scotland just don’t seem to have the finances to maintain a proper playing surface. Johansen was my Celtic player of the day. This lad’s engine seems to run even better on empty. Looking forward to the replay.
