Lessons learned from Friday experiment

828

After every experimental line-up (such as Friday’s), it’s tempting to ask what the manager learned from the experience.

The partnerships on the left and right wings didn’t look right.  Emilio Izaguirre didn’t overlap as often as usual and Stuart Armstrong was less effective than normal.  A lack of space impacted the James Forrest-Adam Matthews partnership on the right.  Forrest was manhandled until he switched left or got inside the box, when he was able to play unhindered.

Ineffectiveness on the wings led to the same up front.  Anthony Stokes doesn’t get to play centre forward too often and didn’t really get much of a chance on Friday.  Stokes anonymity was the most glaring aspect of the game but I suspect the responsibility lies elsewhere.

  4. We never look like a team with johansen dropped into the holding midfield position. A few times this season this has caused concern. Stop it Ronny.

I suspect that the reasons for experimenting were more to do with the heavy schedule that is coming up. You are right Armstrong and Stokes were ineffectual due to the selections and formation. Ronny probably thought and was proven right that we had enough in our locker to beat St. Mirren.

I hope we change it back for the Glasgow Derby.

You’ll never see wing wizardy on a pitch as narrow as St Mirren park, James Forrest was marked ( kicked ) out of the wide wing position. It doesn’t matter the winger when there is already no width of pitch, on which to perform.

St Mirren play to their strengths and it’s also why the full backs can’t overlap, there’s simply no room.

The game was won with a couple of balls that made it through the narrow inside channels, of the parked St Mirren bus, and Barcelona would have been content with a 0-2 on the night.

    Well done the Celts.

  7. A Happy and Holy Easter to you all.

It has always been the case mate away from home. Nakamura was a terrific Player but away from whole with the exception of the odd game he struggled to make an impact.

  10. As you’ve all probably noticed I’m pretty much a Zig n Zag groupie. Aged 45 and 2/3

But Armstrong was horrible in the first half I thought. Obviously had homework outstanding and was concerned one of the many teachers in the crowd would spot him out playing.

Stokes. Just when he’d ‘learned’ outside left he gets moved back inside. Thought he did little and/but received little. The two are often linked!

  11. Jeez the Mullet looks rough or has he always looked like that? Anyone think the BT picture is poor in the dark areas of the pitch? It usually gets a bit brighter after a second probably by some technical wizardry but not today. Hail Hail Hebcelt

Agreed about Jamsie getting a hard time from the left back, he had his number. The other fullback for them played pretty well also the two of them where of the good old fashioned robust type

  13. Always thought mullet was probably a 7 out of 10 manager of the scottish context while Coisty had missed the exam and got a ‘no award’

  14. Oh father, why are you so sad, on this bright Easter morn? When Irishmen are proud and glad. Of the land where they were born?

Happy Easter to all Celts everywhere, from a bright & sunny Tipperary.

It’s all dark at Ibrox. No amount of technical wizardry will overcome that.

  18. Sorry but Stokes has had countless chances to impress and has failed with the very odd exception (Usually when needing a new contract or very poor opposition)

If any lesson should have been learned before Friday, it was that Stokes & Commons BOTH need to play at a slower tempo thus killing our advantage. We should never field both at the same time and preferably only play one or other as a substitute. The league is ours for the taking and we should utilise the remaining games wisely to blood our best young players rather than those who should be elsewhere.

  19. theglasgowcelticway on

Think if we had taken one of the early chances we had on Friday it would probably been a different game. You would normally expect Commons and Forrest to finish when they’re in on the keeper but they didn’t.Don’t really recall St Mitten having any great chances.

  20. Kenny Miller is quite a wee jobbie really.
