Strict liability

Strict liability: if football fans misbehave in a stadium, their club is held liable.

This is the Uefa way and is how most European national associations conduct their business.  Not in Scotland.  In Scotland there is a belief that some problems are so entrenched, it would be unfair to penalise clubs, who do whatever they can to discourage fans from, for example, setting off flares.  Here, a club which does everything it can to stop an errant act is not held liable.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say some clubs fear strict liability.  Celtic cannot stop people setting off flares, they take steps to discourage it, so, the argument goes, why fine or otherwise punish Celtic?

It’s a cop out.  I’d hate to see points deducted, leagues decided, because a club was proxy for a strict liability offender, but everything else is on the table.  Clubs are poor at policing their own, there are in-built inhibitors which make doing so difficult.  Strict liability takes the issue out of their hands.  Stands will be shut, ticket allocations withdrawn, but almost certainly only once.

Flare carriers are the most difficult to police as they are the act of a small number of individuals, who are able to protect themselves [although not their club]by hiding in a crowd, but strict liability would end offensive chanting by thousands overnight.

For that, it’s worth it.

Only caught last night’s Motherwell game in highlights.  Newco looked like the Rangers I remember from the early 80s.  Despite being a mid-table mediocre outfit, Rangers were, and played like, a big team back then.  They attacked with all they had, but John Greig was often out-thought by the manager of a small club, who could organise a defence and break with purpose.

Football tactic students will be captivated by the second leg.  Do Newco go on the attack, and risk the same outcome, or do they learn to live within their limitations, hoping to tempt Motherwell beyond theirs?  The team which gets it wrong could lose by three goals.  It’s a good job Newco didn’t screw around with the ticket allocation, they’ll need that away end packed and energetic.

Thanks for all the feedback on the new issue of CQN Magazine, lots of great reading.

Can’t see Well not scoring on Sunday. A Scott McDonald goal would go down nicely. That would be some kind of karma.

Was driving so listened to the Motherwell game on Radio Scotland. tuned in just after Stephen McManus scored. Really enjoyed the last hour of the drive! :)

Was staggered at how many times Rob Maclean said the score was beyond Motherwell’s wildest dreams and score was “the stuff dreams are made of” at 3-0 and on TV Chic Young asked Mc Manus if the score was a dream come true!

Shocking that Motherwell were seen as lower league cannon fodder to the Mighty Sevco.

I dont think this game is over. Motherwell could lose a player to a red card early doors even before Sevco get their penalty, or maybe at same time, be ready for some blatant Mibbery.

Would love to see Motherwell attack them from the off, pin them back, score a couple of goals and spend the remaining 70 minutes laughing and celebrating along with every other right minded decent person in Scotland! :)

Are we supposed to think ‘all those’ tic supporters who want the new Rangers in the SPL with us, were saddened when Motherwell scored and cheered when the new Rangers cheered?

If my Aberdonian next door neighbour wrongly suspected I might be one of those (according to the media they are everywhere yet I havent met any) he would have realised his error after the 3rd goal when I celebrated as if Celtic had scored a Europen goal (even surprised myself!)

    Keep them where they are.

As Paul has alluded to on a weekly basis – they havent learned any lessons and are still the same vitriolic supremacists their incumbents were.

Celtic doesnt need a toxic association which is used to try and disguise and cleanse the offender.

    Strict liability.

Celtic got done when we played Rennes,on the most spurious of charges,an offence which no-one previously knew existed.

Bar one police commander. An ex-ref,and alleged Celtic supporter.

As I have said before,I was close enough to the GB that night to be sure that ‘illicit chanting’ did not take place. I would have had to hold back my Uncle Jim,no fan of such,if it had.

And we don’t call him The Growler for nothing.

I won’t mention my thoughts on why the club didn’t appeal this.

But I will simply point out that,in a country which seems to pride itself on applying the law more rigorously against some than others,I’m surprised that you wish to offer them more ammunition.

I think Pearson’s fitness will be a concern for ‘Well.

As the second half wore on, he was the master of his midfield, culminating in his ball winning tackle and trademark surge through the middle.

Their goal came immediately after his substitution and his replacement was the man that their POtY out jumped.

Hope he is fit for Subday.

Special mention for Scott McD., whose guile and experience was a major factor.

If the Rangers play Moshni on Sunday I think Motherwell can beat them again.Moshni is the poorest defender I have seen in a long time and yet he strokes the ball around that he thinks he is the greatest but he will always make mistakes during a game. H.H.

  20. Hi Paul67,

Got to agree the play-off tie isn’t over, a lot of football still to be played. But well done Stephen McManus as Cesearesque finish for the second.

Question is if The Ibrox Club have to play in the championship next season would the relegation be fair. Haven’t they been punished enough and don’t Scotland need a strong Newco in the top league?

    Just curious.

    Hail Hail
