Great times need suitable historical frame

162

At the start of this month I look at the fixture list; three away games, at Inverness in the Scottish Cup and both Edinburgh grounds in the league, sounded a tall order.  Before the Inverness game I wrote that it was games like that which often brought a promising treble run to a halt, while Hibs and Hearts had already taken points from us this season.

‘The record shows’, we’re in the next round of the cup and hit an incredible nine goals over two visits to Edinburgh without reply.

We’ve scored 21 goals away from home since the last goal conceded (at Udinese) and have scored 26 in domestic away games since Motherwell took the lead against Celtic on 6 November last year.  In that time Dunfermline Kilmarnock and Dundee United have scored at Celtic Park, while Falkirk managed a goal at Hampden in the League Cup semi-final, but I don’t remember such an imperious Celtic team away from home.

I remember throwing a troublesome away stat at Gordon Strachan’s team.  Despite winning the league Gordon’s team went over 15 months in all competitions without keeping a clean sheet away from home.  Celtic were the best team in the land, indisputable winners, but no matter how lowly the opposition, there was a fragility about the team.

These great times need to be placed in a suitable historical frame.

The signed Celtic jersey we were auctioning on eBay raised £5000 on Saturday. I get to see a lot of Celtic fans, so should know your nature well enough by now, but you continue to raise the bar higher.

Stunned.

If the match delegate at Ibrox on Saturday (Willie McDougall i believe) does not include the sectarian singing in his report, then he should be stripped of his ability to delegate ANY fixture in Scottish football for life

We are watching and waiting Mr McDougall

  2. Good discussion on Radio Scotland between John Beattie and Graham Speirs. Big John telling it exactly as it is. He was at ipox and was disgusted by the anti-Catholic bile.

That line has been getting aired on FF for a few days now – I had a good laugh when I read it.

Now we know where Leckie does his research – a total clown.

  5. Charlie Mulgrew called up for Scotland. Richly deserved. I must admit I had my reservations when he returned but he has been immense wherever he has played.

  6. The Idiot – next he will be pushing for our history to be removed as FF believe we were a NewCo in 1994. Honestly. They think going public made us a NewCo…..

  7. The defence have all played their part in the number of clean sheets we’ve kept, not least the goal-keeper himself.

But for me, Wanyama coming in and establishing himself sitting in front of the back four has given us a very solid look, and offering protection and cover against the opposition’s runners.

In the interest of the blog i shall ignore your wee jibe even if it came quite a bit after 2 posted apologies. I would however recommend you try and obtain a rather good book called “NI the Orange state” Have a read of that and then get back to me. We can discuss my assertions then. Oh and my comparison isn’t bigoted at all rather a statement of a prevailing sentiment within a NI community

RL/The Idiot – Leckie is a dangerous wee clown. One to be watched, along with the rest of his LL brethren.

How did we supposedly benefit from certain family members lining their own pockets at our expense? Muppets!

    Re James McClean

There was a story running recently about him playing for NI U21′s, but only in a friendly, then he chose to play for the Rep.

The NI FA have a pole up their rear ends about it and also about other players from the North chosing to play for the South.

    Re Barcelona

I was in the main stand with my brother at the 0-0 game surrounded by Barca fans. At 90mins everyone of them who walked past us shook our hands. They coulndn’t have been nicer.

‘Jeez…ye mention Orwell and it kicks off!!

I didn’t know he was a grass for MI5….ye learn something every day right enough. He died in Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride’

Orwell wasn’t an MI5 spy and he didn’t die in Hairmyres hospital.

The MI5 stuff is based on what is called the Orwell list

He died in London, though he had been a patient at Hairmyres, where he was treated for the TB which subsequently killed him.

The answer to the unaccounted for supporters in the 60s, 70s and 80s at Celtic Park when the official attendances were much lower than the numbers of spectators inside the ground can be put down to the number of kids being lifted over and the number of adults who jumped over the turnstile without paying. The installation of full size turnstiles put paid to this. I used to work on the turnstiles at CP and can swear that lots of adults used to come sailing over the turnstile without paying. Very few were intercepted by stewards or police.

  21. MWD so i read guess he was “smashed” or perhaps his milk was curdled and the ice cream taste wasnt the quite the real gelato

  22. Reports of Sectarian Singing at Rangers FC

It was hugely disappointing to hear reports of sectarian singing at Ibrox from a section of the Rangers support during the match against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

“Show Bigotry the Red Card acknowledges Rangers Football Club have condemned those who engage in sectarian chanting and have been very supportive of campaigns like ours which promote equality and respect in society. We know that Rangers will share our disappointment at Saturday’s events which only damage the club’s reputation.”

We call for all genuine fans to help us spread the anti-sectarianism message by renouncing such displays of religious hatred.

I wonder if the First Minister will share the disappointment…

Can Leckie provide any evidence for that accusation?

I very much doubt it and since I’d guess at the time he was talking about he’d never been to Celtic Park. Jack McGinn, Kevin Kelly and Chris White should sue his arse.

I know for a fact the 1st time I’d ever paid into Celtic Park to go to the terraces was when I was 16 as I’d got a lift in up till then. I’m guessing I’m not alone in that

  24. Leckie’s article explains how Celtic were able to afford the huge transfer fees, wages and bonuses that enabled us the assemble and retain the Lions squad.
