Celtic 1-0 St Johnstone

352

The champions stretched some of the limbs from their squad against St Johnstone tonight as a first half Anthony Stokes goal secured the points.  It was one of those rare, balmy, Celtic Park occasions when three or four layers of clothing were sufficient, not the customary seven or eight.

Highlight for the evening was the standing ovation for captain-for-the-night, Mark Wilson.  A 22-year-old Wilson joined Celtic over six years ago and provided us with some great memories, most notably his Scottish Cup-tie winning goal against Rangers last season, but his career has been blighted by injury since late 2006, robbing him of hundreds of appearances for the team he has supported all his life.

Moh Bangura had a rare 90 minutes and was unfortunate not to open his Celtic scoring account.  Anthony Stokes played a drear cross-field pass to Bangura, who was some 40 yards away.  The striker from Sierra Leone had options but made space for a shot which rebounded back off the post.

Bangura has a hand in Stokes earlier goal.  He got a touch on a 28th minute corner pushing the ball to Stokes who finished clinically.

Thereafter the outcome was never in doubt, although Celtic were seldom clinical.  21-year-old Nigerian Rabiu Ibrahim made his Celtic on 74 minutes when he replaced Kris Commons and looked comfortable on the ball.

    Thanks guys.

I was hoping it wouldn’t be Mark as he’s been a good, solid servant over the years. Giving him the captaincy tonight is probably NL’s goodbye – hope I’m wrong.

    Paul67,

Want to set up that meeting you offered ernie, I’ll do it ?

  3. Not that long home from tonights match which was destined to be an anti climatic game, after Sunday’s high, it was a family night out, and a perfect evening for the infectious Thai Tims.

Neil Lennon played fringe players all of whom it could be argued failed to grab their chance to shine.

McGeouch was uncomfortable wide on the right, Bangura didn’t score, or take up scoring positions, Kelvin Wilson looked brittle, and Mark Wilson may have waved goodbye.

Anthony Stokes, I felt was poor in failing to lead the line, and it was left to Ledley, Izzaguirre, and to a lesser extent Commons to add any class to a below par performance, but a welcome three points.

Think Neil Lennon will return the side to more familiar lines for the trip to Dundee.

Beautiful summers night in Paradise, – didn’t half turn parky.

He sences the mood and acts according to what his needs at the time, hence my thoughts he works for jack, very happy to be wrong.

Firstly, Paul67 has made no mention of Peter Lawwell. It’s an indication of your level of comprehension that you think he has.

Secondly, there’s nothing that Peter Lawwell, or anyone connected with Celtic, is going to tell me about this matter in a private conversation that they couldn’t tell the Celtic support as a whole.

Thirdly, I find it repugnant that Paul67 and a number of posters on here seem to think that what he suggests is an appropriate way for Celtic to conduct business. The supporters, all of them, not a select few, deserve better.

Finally let me make my position clear. I haven’t, contrary to Paul67′s assumptions, levelled any criticism at the Board over the issue of a newco huns being admitted straight into the SPL. I have said they can stop the move if they have the resolve to do so. Those who construe that as a criticism have perhaps decided for themselves what stance the board are going to take. I haven’t, and live in hope that they do the right thing. If they don’t, then as far as I’m concerned, it’s over.

Apologies if I have got your profession wrong. I was not trying to be personal.

  18. Kojo, apologies, just found the AT piece with duffer Clark on C4. Out since late afternoon and didn’t realise he got that one on one he was looking for. He was a tad frustrated earlier that only ‘sports journo’s’ had access to the press conference. He didn’t ask the specific question you wanted, but I tought he was quite thorough and his c4 news piece was daming of the proposed process.

Although pleasing to see AT take this on and spreading to a wider audience, via the best news programme on TV IMO, I still feel if he was working for the tabloid ITN news at 6 or 10, there would much more on an outcry. Just my opinion, but hey what do I know. Thx for the reply.

  19. Not long back from the game. Was a pretty dull affair but brightened considerably by the Thai Tims and the Green Brigade. Well done all concerned.

    Ernie..,

As I said, I expect your word to be your bond, I’m very very happy to have “private conversations” with any and everyone, however I refuse to keep them private if I think I’m being lied to.

I’ve cost a few corporations quite a few million pounds making them adhere to their agreed specifications when I’ve had problems with veracity.

If I demand transparency, then it has to be across the board, especially our board.

If Scottish football is less competitive next season then we can still go to Celtic Park for the singjng and dancing.

The fitbaw was entertaining enough but the show, on a reasonably warm summers night, was excellent.

Was impressed by Bangura’s ability to hold off defenders and keep possession, just a wee bit more composure needed

  22. hi bhoys . just in from manning a polling station from seven this morning . knackered , any info of the game and the latest delays in the orc saga appreciated
