Aberdeen, progress and truths of competition

445

Winning the league is hard, or at least it should be.  Aberdeen are finding that out as they unnecessarily dropped points on Saturday.  Celtic have had it easy for so long we’ve forgotten a few truths of competition.

Sitting 6 points clear, and (again) confident of winning the league, we can constructively appreciate the job Derek McInnes has done at Pittodrie.  They are very likely to come up short this season, but the gap between them and Celtic is not the chasm it used to be.

For years we discussed that what Scottish football really needs is teams like Aberdeen and Dundee United comfortably outperforming Motherwell and Inverness.  No disrespect intended for the latter two, but Aberdeen have hugely better resources, if we are to receive a genuine challenge, it will come from there.
I was also delighted to see the 15k attendance at Pittodrie on Saturday, reflecting the bounce that has occurred at Tynestle this season.  Figures like that will help Aberdeen (and Hearts) solidify.  Both can make a profit at that level.

Progress isn’t linear, so don’t be surprised if Aberdeen or Hearts don’t leap forward next season, but the chances of them being overhauled by a smaller club is slight.  The future looks healthier than the past.

    The Onlooker,

At the time of Booby Murdoch’s death, I had been in contact with David Hills, of Said and Done.

I had been trying to get him interested in the shenanigans at Ibrox and Hampden.

He said that he had raised the subject at editorial meetings on two occasions, but it wasn’t taken up.

One reason was that there was other stuff on the go and another was that due to financial restraints and that most of their news was taken “off the wires”.

I stopped getting the Observer then.

Was that a lone comment or the prevailing view? If it’s the latter I’ll stand corrected but it certainly didn’t feel like it at the time.

You guys can be snide but it still doesn’t make this performance right. Far Too many times we sit here and watch these indifferent performances and the happy clappers clap and defend that guff, The bottom line is we have no consistency from one game to the next in selection, performance or personnel. I expect better and so should the rest of us, we have no rivals and yet we still struggle. Own worst enemy. Off to bed have a good night Bhoys. ; )

Who ‘scored’ the header from the corner just after the whistle blew for the 2nd penalty?

  6. Just read on here that the great Hugh McIlvanney retired yesterday. The very best journalist I have had the pleasure to read. Oh, how I wish he would pen an article (or better, write a book) about the corruption endemic in Scottish football.

I was talking to another supporter today who hadn’t seen the game on Friday. He had no idea of the “tackle” that could have ended young Tierney’s season. As was said earlier, you could see the intent on the thug’s face. I actuallty thought he changed the way he was tackling in midair, in order to do damage to the lhad. Utterly appalling. Even worse is Thompson’s lack of action. Can we not demand some retrospective action against the thug? Didn’t the media demand something of the sort against Bobo or big Dan, when the MiB missed something? We cannot say nothing while our players are kicked off the park.

I just dont see how RD will transform the current team, into a team that can qualify for the CL.

I would obviously be very happy if that happened.

    But….I really dont think so.

We would have to improve rapidly.

    Imo its not happening.

    Anyway…we will see.

good post mate.a factor imo that is often forgotten too is the general stability as a going concern we have had since 1994.if you think back on the economic ups and downs that we have had, interest rates, banking crisis and the death of the cheat which is currently been worked thro. However i would like to know what,if any succession planning has been made so that the certainty and stability during his tenure can be maintained.

I would also like to improve on shareholder democracy and transparency as shareholder democracy within our club is in contrast to that perceived by Fergus.

but you are correct,no amount of glitterin le merd in the meeja can Sir Dave of liquidation be compared.

    Hard work on CQN sometimes.

I cracked a gag during the Hamilton game …not a titter.

I said….Scott Brown, being marked out of the game, by his own hair:)

Tumbleweeds…Zilch, not even any sarcastic replies:)

Cmon….cheer up….wait till next season….Bigotry Revisited,…A Bit like Brideshead Revisited, but with Huns:)

You will all love the return of the Covenanters and their brand of Fire and Brimstone.

    It will be a blast:)

Sorry I had a Doh! almost as soon as I hit ‘post comment’

A quick dip in suggests about the same level of negativity over the performance without the calls for the manager’s head.

What i want to see…to be fair.

Now and again we see bhoys at the game dressed as the Pope.

I think i will graft a note to FF and demand that some sevco supporters dress as John Knox, just for historical accuracy.

I will then respond by dressing up as James Connolly in his ICA uniform, sporting a splendid moustache.

    Should go down well:)

Lets try to get a bit of fun out of this:)

Should liven things up a bit.

  15. I noticed that there is a deal on Groupon for cutprice tickets for the lounges for the Dundee game on Wed. Have any of the current lounge members been offered a complimentary ticket or rebate? this has happened on several occasions and we get Nada, unless of course you complain and grudgingly you get a complimentary. Who is the top bananna that I could fire of an email to? Hail Hail Hebcelt

I been going through CQN match updates from 2012/13 season on the days we drew or got beat. He was getting it tight right up until we beat Barca. After he could really do no wrong despite some truly appalling displays and results in the league

For some reason SB was running around in a daze….probably the weight of his new hairstyle:)

It was like a scene from the Stepford Wives.

  20. Players and managers must get their heads round the ‘last man’ ramifications and observe it, just as we do the ‘no passback to the keeper’ rule.

Against ICT (semi) , Ross County (semi) and the latest at Hamilton, we were in the lead and well on top, at the times of dismissal.

I’m sure we would have won all three with a full team on the park, even after losing an equaliser.

Not being trained/coached in the rule has almost certainly cost us the treble last season, and who knows this season too – when was the last time anyone was penalised for passing back to the keeper?

We must not give referees the opportunity – this MUST be hammered home on the training ground and in the dressing room – it’s not rocket-science.

*cheers, as I’ve already said the long term plan IMHO is to rear our own which is close to many if not all Celtic supporters heart.

DD plays the long game hence the revamping of the struggling London City Airport which went 5 years after he bought it from half a million passenger numbers to 1,580,000 By the time he sold it LCA DLR station had opened on a branch of the Docklands Light Railway, providing rail access to the airport for the first time, and providing fast rail links to Canary Wharf and the City of London, more than 2.3 million passengers used LCA.

I have been led to believe that he was livid when he had heard how the rag and bone man had corrupted our game by placing his own men in positions of power in the game.

Top men in business and industry talk, the Ayr Academy FP was never looked upon as being a top business man but an Ayrshire Harold Steptoe.

I firmly believe that we will be running Scottish football sooner rather than later and also have a say in the European game as well.

We just need to have a bit of patience, a lot easier to do now that we are winning trophies than it was during the decadent 90’s.

  23. Very rarely log on nowadays. But on holiday this week so I thought why not?Genuinely find it difficult to believe that people still want to give Ronnie more time and even worse another shot at the champions League. He was a completely inappropriate appointment for a club of Celtic size and traditions.Other posters have made the points very well why we must look for another manager(Tactics.team selection, signings, lack of organisation in defence,European record and so on).I really think that people that want him to stay are huns on the wind up as there is nothing to suggest things will improve if he remains the manager.
