Absurd Rummenigge, Regan

435

When Juventus scored in the opening minutes in the away leg of their last 16 Champions League tie last night it felt familiar. It’s just three years since you and I saw them in person do the same thing at the same stage of the competition.

It took Bayern Munich 70 minutes to rebound but we’ve not really recovered from a lapses in a tie which could otherwise have been far closer than the five goal margin it turned into. Getting back onto the same field with the likes of Juventus after Christmas (or even after August) is now the big challenge. It will take some doing.

I liked Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as a player but as a Usurper of Meritocracy he’s falling well down my list. He celebrated both teams after last night’s game before asking how long Uefa would countenance teams like Juventus exiting the competition at this stage? Not only would he like clubs like his get guaranteed entrance to the competition, he feels that elimination in March should is too harsh a consequence for losing.

I’m sure Rummenigge was being deliberately absurd last night. He’s trying to provoke alarm before playing his hand.

John Clark, on Scottish Football Monitor, attended SFA chief executive Stewart Regan’s presentation at Edinburgh University yesterday on values and integrity in football. Mr Clark questioned Mr Regan on whether Rangers failure to pay overdue social taxes in 2011 broke Uefa competition eligibility rules. Clark informs us Regan said he would do “Nothing” if incontrovertible evidence was available that social taxes were unpaid and that debt collectors had been employed.

We have a criminal lack of oversight in Scotland, not just in football.  This attitude would not be possible in London.

The spirit of Jack Warner, Sepp Blatter and so many others is alive and well at Hampden. This is what we’re up against, and remember people, Blame the Victim is the hottest game in town, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know the background, anyone can play.

  4. I had a really horrible thought last night that perhaps Regan’s brass neck was the result of him *knowing* nothing meaningful can or will be done. Deflection from SFA, through UEFA all the way to FIFA.

Wouldn’t it be ironic if the death of Rangers really did end up being the death of Celtic, as fans abandoned the club realising nothing could or would be done, where the only meaningful way of registering our displeasure at their cheating was to resign from the league – which coincidentally would probably also kill the club.

I’m by no way saying this is how it is, nor am I suggesting that this is how it is as a way of excusing inaction from the board. My view is that they should come out and be fully transparent on it. If they feel nothing meaningful can be achieved come out and tell us why. Saying nothing at all is the worst of all the options available to them.

  5. Brendon O’Carroll seems a nice guy and Mrs Brown’s boys is really funny.

He may be proud of his roots, but is he a local boy, rather than Bhoy. ?

The Cheats, they are all the way up the pyramid, will be laughing for a couple of Months then just carry on like Celtic never existed, well outside Scotland anyway – Inside Scotland, the red, white and blue tops would be manifestering into full Bloom.

Without the death there’s no need for resuscitation though. Anyway it’s all hypothetical but that ‘Nothing’ answer from Regan stinks and it strikes me as a man who knows he’s in a position of safety.

  14. Reflections on Res 12:

Probably the biggest difference between now and when Fergus McCann was in town is that Fergus was effectively the executive chairman of the club; he was the majority shareholder and had a clear plan, which included maximising his investment over a short timeframe.

On the Cadete Registration Fiasco, it was he who ‘went’ for Farry, knowing that Farry’s misconduct had already cost him and that not to do so would likely put his (personal) investment in further danger: the club’s interest were very much his own interests.

In so many ways, Peter Lawwell is not Fergus McCann: he doesn’t have the clout or the financial investment: his personal stake is not nearly as high.

He may even think that he’s in ‘bonus time’ as our CEO, since it’s unusual for a highly ‘compensated’ club CEO to be in post as long as he has.

Although his pay and bonus is linked to the club’s financial out-turn, he’s really just an employee who takes instructions from the Board (not least DD, but also the Board as a collective).

On this Res 12 imbroglio, PL will most likely feel he has neither a Board mandate nor personal need to go after Stewart Regan and the rest of the SFA cabal and (again, unlike Fergus) is himself conflicted by his membership of several high-level SFA committees.

It would be natural to assume that the Board looks to Peter for advice on all sorts of fan and shareholder interface-related matters.

DD (the dominant presence on the Board) lives overseas and it is safe to assume that Celtic is but a relatively small item on his agenda, so that he, much more than the UK-resident Board members, is dependent on PL’s accurate interpretation of the mood and possibilities surrounding matters such as this.

With that in mind, I have the distinct feeling that this [the Board’s Res 12 vacillation] is a gigantic Board-level cock-up, the intensity of fan response to which will come as something of a surprise.

I also imagine that the Board meeting nearest to the ST renewal date could be an ‘interesting’ one for PL.

    I hope so, anyway.

I also hope that by then it won’t be too late for the Board to restore a semblance of faith with the fans and other stakeholders.

    Only time will tell …

That’s fair enough, you say that the SFA know who they are dealing with, but it’s very obvious they don’t really care either, ergo, they’r not giving you any answers to even one question.

Some in here say that you have a100% stone wall case and proof to back it up? I’m not seeing that, to many questions to be answered says to me that the Requisitioners Are whistling in the dark (IMO) if Celtic are ok with what the SFA have said to them then I’m fine with that, as they are also looking after shareholders too, Celtic (well it looks like) taking no more part in it obviously means that the board have taken it as far as it can go and seemed to have exhausted procedure .

Seems to me as I’v said before, your not getting anywhere with this unless you get the proper authorities to charge them with fraud (the SFA) but then again we get back to where I began, to many questions, and not enough back up.

CFC are a well ran club with a talented clever board of business men, I doubt if the SFA are pulling the wool over they’r eyes, I know I’ll get f… PL and the board cabal on me that’s a given, fair enough, I mean I mentioned last week something about Res.12 last week and a certain person posted, ….what’s your interest in res.12 anyway? I mean honestly it’s not a wonder lots of Celtic supporters don’t know about it with that attitude not good PR.

But I wish you all the very best on the matter, and will only be to happy to put my hands up and say I was wrong.

    Best of luck HH

I would rather do a Derry City than a Belfast Celtic, and play in a different League.

Doing a Belfast Celtic is what our enemies want.

  20. I have read the input from some of the key figures in the Res 12 action and, although some do not wish it, I wish to add my thanks and admiration to them for pursuing this. Until the latest flurry of information over the last week I had many wrong impressions of the issues. After reading last night, I could not avoid a feeling of deep sadness over what these individuals had experienced through their endevour. A key puzzle is why will the club not take the lead in this. It seems that it is this issue that will swing fans future behaviour in supporting the club in the immediate and long term.

Correct me if I am wrong but BRTH has indicated, w.r.t the granting of a licence, that the damaging issue is not the initial granting of the licence but the fact that it was not revoked in the following June?

Here are a couple of speculations that may or may not hold water to explain the inaction of the club.

Firstly, the club may a) not be convinced about the validity of the evidence available, b) the club may believe the evidence but it is somehow connected, in the eyes of the club, to an on-going case, or future case. If either of the latter describes how the club sees this, then I can understand why they will not take the lead in this.

Secondly, is it possible that the club has been made aware of a “similar” situation in its past where the rules on some matter were applied lightly, or even incorrectly? If the club pursues the Res 12 issues then the other issue could emerge. Then we have a real crisis in Scottish football that could destroy it.

Perhaps, the Res 12 guys have some information that can eliminate one or more of these potential explanations for the clubs position? I merely speculate and have no reason to believe any of the above is correct. I merely find it difficult to understand why the club would provide assistance and then not run with the ball.
