Alan Thompson, scourge of the Rangers

438

If you’ve been on Celtic Quick News since the beginning you’ll know how high a regard I hold Alan Thompson.  In 2004 I called him the most influential Celtic midfielder since the Lisbon Lions.  His goal won us our first Champions League points, he scored the only goal of our two-legged Uefa Cup tie against Barcelona in 2004, he has scored two thirds of our competitive goals on German soil and his deliveries for Larsson, Hartson and Sutton were legendary.  His free kicks and corners always threatened.

He also punished Rangers more than any other midfield player in the last 40 years, scoring seven goals against them.

We have had many more skilful midfielders, but no one since the Lions came closed to making the impact of Alan Thompson in the games it really mattered.

We wish him well.

I particularly loved his constant winding up of the crazy eyed zoomer Ricksen.

    “Al Capone…

Despite all his criminal activities Al Capone was involved in, the FBI finally nailed him with tax evasion.

Is there any merit in going after Whyte through civil court for a refund or part refund on our Season Tickets? We bought a ST on the understanding that Rangers would endeavour to win the League. This was derailed by the point’s deduction and obvious effect on team performance.

If we buy a ticket for a show and the management, during the performance disrupts the remainder of said show are we not entitled to compensation? We didn’t get what we paid for.

I would appreciate it if a legal minded bear on FF could give this some thought.

Could an individual ST holder sue on behalf of all ST holders and how much would it cost?

£15,000,000 could be up for grabs. (I know. He probably doesn’t have this amount of cash.)

If the SFA are considering chasing him for his unpaid fine though the civil courts why not join in and start hounding for what he’s worth.

Have a look at the pictures of him on the train smirking. In some tennis club in south of France. Standing beside Davy Weir at his presentation. Arsenal Shares etc. What more motivation do we need?

This could be the start of his downfall and hopefully Jail time.

Now remember. I’m talking about Whyte NOT The Rangers.”

    Totally agree, Paul.

Good luck, Alan and thanks for te wonderful memories.

  5. Well said Paul67.

I never fully appreciated how big an impact he made as a player until I watched Henke’s 100 goals DVD……Thommo must have set up 75% of the goals!!

Class player and true Celt…..one of the real hunskelpers!!

Perhaps he’ll tell us what Sally said after that game……

    Hail Hail.

    Well said, Paul67 ………. He was a hard, brave, player … a hunskelper,indeed.

  7. Top of the morning to you all from sunny/chilly Fife.

Sad to hear about Thommo and Lenny parting but it is no big deal.

Good luck to Thommo wherever he goes and thanks for the memories.

Wonder how long it will be before the Masonic Scottish Media tout Gordon Strachan for the job of mentor/assistant to Neil?

  8. St.John.Doyle on

Thommo was my type of midfielder skillful with a hard edge

All the best you gave me some great memories Celtic legend, I hope the dispute between you and the club can be sorted quickly as I want to be able to see you return to see your many friends in Celtic soon

    God bless you Thommo

  9. Paul 67

We do wish him well but, If, Alan was sacked over the phone then…..well I’m afraid for me it’s another indication that, our ship is rudderless above Neil. imo.

It is yet another reason that justifie’s the GB stance/apprehension in buying their SB’s ?

    I hope it’s not a water-shed.

Then again…it wouldn’t be the first time that we have shot ourselve’s in the foot and, taken the spotlight off the huns. imo.

    Hail Hail

  10. I like most Celtic fans, loved Alan Thompson for all his marvellous contributions to Celtic, and was very saddened to hear last night that he had left the club.

CQN is a wonderful cyber place, but when something happens at Celtic it does not escape ill informed, as well as informed debate.

Twitter is a very dangerous place for rumour conjecture, and I’m disappointed that Celtic fans firstly received the news of Alan Thompson’s departure in this manner.

    Hail Hail Alan Thompson.

  11. “Alan refused to meet with Neil, hence the reason for the discussion being conducted by telephone,” said the club.

“The matter is now in the hands of lawyers and, therefore, we are unable to go into any further details.”

    Club spokesman

  12. Can I say speculating on this site, or any other for that matter, about Thommo does neither Celtic or Thommo any service. The Club has made it’s statement and I, for one am happy with that.

There are more important things to discuss over the next few days rather than start a “feeding” frenzy on why an important figure in Celtic’s fholklore needed to leave the Club he obviously has a great affinity with.

    Hail! Hail! PMTYH

Kevjungle …….your opinion (over a long period) is based on a seeming dislike of the Celtic Board for other than football reasons……..getting a bit tedious / boring……IMO …!!!

  16. Lennynhoy, yes, always an underrated player.

    thomthethim, aye.

Fin75, his deliveries added hugely to Henrik’s stats.

    Patrick27, cheers.

KevJungle, each to his own, I suppose. I have no idea what took place (apart from the explanation given on the exact point you raise in today’s media), so will not use the lack of knowledge on my part as a weapon against anyone.

    Good luck to Alan Thompson.

I hope he and the club can work out their differences as soon as practicably possible.

    Seriously?

Give Lenny and the club some credit….they’ve fought enough battles lately.

  19. Thommo IS an immensely gifted footballer.

I really feel for him if he’s got a drink problem and that it’s causing chaos in his personal life.

Such a thing is an illness and he needs all our empathy and assistance.

I hope there is a successful resolution to anything that is causing him grief and I look forward to his return to football where he can be a game-changing influence.

HH! Alan Thompson. May the road rise with you. God bless.
