One day this week Strathclyde Police officers will have visited Lennoxtown and Murray Park and reminded players and officials the consequences their actions can have before during and after Sundays Celtic-Rangers game.
Our streets are dangerous on these weekends, best avoided, always avoided by me. You know it, I know it, people who have worked in the game for the last 40-odd years know it.
At a media conference at Ibrox today, Sandy Jardine said:
“Having gone round and met a lot of the supporters and people within the club, I think people are absolutely sick and tired of everybody having a kick at us when we’re down.
“Out of that, the supporters will take sanctions against clubs which we deem have been unfair to ourselves.
“I’m not going to go into the actual details but we will probably announce that after the meeting with the supporters clubs.
“Everybody is sick and tired of just accepting everything that everybody is throwing at us and it’s about starting to fight back.
“The size of our club and the size of our supporter base, it can be a powerful weapon.
“Everybody having a kick at us”. “Supporters will take sanctions”. “It’s about starting to fight back”.
Watch yourself at the weekend. After the game, go home and stay there. Talk about kicking and fighting three days before the game does not bode well.

Calm it down a bit. In my experience, they are at their very worst when they are winning and their triumphalism DNA kicks in. They get in the face of our fans, provoke a reaction and lash out.
They will be at their most vile within the stadium, but the game will be well policed. The only doubt comes from their supposed walk-out and march to Hampden, if it happens!
Our fans need to be vigilant after the game and not take any daft chances….just like any other Glasgow derby. Even if it is the last one ever!!

Sadly, when Rangers go, their fans will still be around. Some will follow the newco (assuming there is one), some will attach themselves to other teams and the rest will just be there in the community as they always have been, as bitter as ever and maybe more so. Losing a team doesn’t mean we’ll lose the problem.

I remember reading a study of violence at sporting events, years ago, so any memory of links is long gone (along with the accuracy).
Anyway. It basically said that a victorious team’s supporters were much more likely to riot, due to the heightened state of their mood.
Let’s just do them on the pitch, and let them troop off home early.

Anyway, in the middle of this music session, my synapses fire in directions that continue to confuse me. For no obvious reason, I think of a school mate.
Nae tears now, but oor family didn’t have very much in the way of coinage – too many weans at the end of the money. I went to a school which, to my eyes, was populated by similar accused. Maybe as an early allegory for society, I find that, thin as they are, there are strata amongst the proletariat.
There are a few, very few, who’s parents own there own home; then there are the pervasive eternal hypocritical gobshites belonging to ‘decent’ folks; then there was us – tinks; then there was the Sharkeys.
I remember, 9 or 10, walkin a mile or so to play with a ‘mate’ from school, to knock on his door and remember to my dying day the look of, what I can only describe as disgust, on his mothers face. Such were the wee hierarchies.
The Sharkeys though, oh the Sharkeys – below even us, according to them.
Wee Davey Sharkey – Brigend – if you’re out there, I remember what you did for me, and the beauty of it is, you didn’t see it as anything special.
