Ange, Martin and Brendan. Breaking new ground and good endings

241

If you were around 20 years ago, you lived through an era when every time a manager in the English topflight came under pressure, we had to endure speculation Martin O’Neill would leave us to move back south.  We even had the Tory party leader urge Liverpool to appoint Martin!

These days., Ange Postecoglou’s name is sure to appear on betting lists whenever a vacancy appears.  The issue is also put into the public domain on occasions like yesterday, when Ange is back home in Australia and was asked about moving to England.

Ange responded correctly, “Celtic play in front of 60,000 people, we have the opportunity to win trophies and we’re in the Champions League. It’s a massive football club.”  I expect it would take an incredible offer to move him now (maybe something like Liverpool), specifically because he thinks – he thinks, not I think – he has only scratched the surface of what he could achieve at Celtic.

There is a glass ceiling here.  We are never going to win the Champions League without huge environment change.  It is possible, however, to go deeper into the tournament that we have gone before in its current guise.

Martin’s name will forever be sacred around these parts.  While Wim Jansen won the league for Celtic two years before he arrived, it was Martin who truly put us back on top.  Since then, we have never been the underdogs we were even at the start of this first season.  Five years into the job, Martin’s race was run at Celtic in every respect and he left for personal reasons, without an enticement from elsewhere.

There are two requirements necessary to achieve enduring legendary status: break new ground and when you leave, do so on good terms.  Four years ago, Brendan Rodgers had us eating out of his hand, but his abrupt departure means he would not be considered appropriate to make the Paradise Windfall Draw these days.

If Ange remains as successful as he is, someone will eventually put a £10m/yr offer in front of him and that will be the end of this era.  He has work to do to justify anything like that, as he said on Australian TV yesterday, “I keep saying to [the players]if they do what they do well then all this other stuff takes care of itself, whatever their ambitions or my ambitions may be.”  Within a couple of years, I believe Ange can do something very special here.

Martin is at Dalziel Park Hotel, Motherwell, this Saturday, 24 September, for a brunch, a Q&A and photos.  Tickets are £50 and available from Alan, 07970 716422.  Kick off 11:45am.

  1. Watching Scotland v Ukraine was like Celtic v Shakhtar until the goals went in, with two major differences.

    1. A robust defence that made Mudryk look normal and nullified

    2. Simple headed goals from corner kicks – I miss those.

Still loving all things Ange but the 2 points above don’t feel like that big a trade off.

  3. P67 — pretty low rent stuff trying to flog tickets.

For what / and for why — not really sure.

Very DR if you ask me.

  4. MON and BR both broke DD’s heart after two years in the job.

Hopefully things are a bit more long term with AP.

He wants to do the most he can to develop his career and we are reaping the benefit.

A growth agenda — personal and club — is a good thing.

  5. MM your daily attacks on Callum are boring, embarrassing and quite simply wrong, if you can’t see what he brings to us you know nothing about football.

  6. Good Article Paul67,

There are few managers who can come to Clubs and make real, vital, long term differences to a Club and Martin has done it in a few.

My home town was a small semi pro non league side who are now a fixture in the English football league and have been for many years.

If Ange can be as transformative in terms of Europe as Martin was domestically then we can look forward to “competing” in Europe in a more sustainable way.

    Hail Hail

I am just highlighting the basics behind the change in fortunes.

We keep asking CMcG to do a job that he cannot perform to the standard we require.

We need to improve and keep improving.

Wearing blinkers won’t help anyone in the end.

  8. Does anyone think that Steve Clarke had Scotland playing a version of Angeball with a High press and advanced Full backs?

I feel he did change his set up

  9. MadMitch on 22nd September 2022 1:02 pm

You have blinkers when it comes to Callum, as I said daily attacks.

As long as he does the job that the manager wants I frankly don’t care about your opinion, remember it is your opinion, your reference to “we” in your posts in indulgent pish.

    He played 4 – 5 – 1.

With players playing their club / traditional positions.

Made a huge difference. — no more 3 CB’s including SMcT nonsense.

Ukraine were more into the inverted FB look not us.

AH — developing into a great player.

RC — had a good second half.

SA — great positions / horrible finishing.

    There is hope.

  11. Kangaroos v the Kiwis friendly. 1-0.

Mooy bossed it albeit at a very non-Ange pace.

McGree [Boro 3rd from bottom of Championship] was subbed on but you wouldn’t have noticed it.

Not a patch on Matt ORiley.

Eye-catcher; the All Whites Matt Garbutt; 20 year old midfielder currently not getting a game at Torino.

  12. DT getting injured is a blow.

    To us and the NT.

Would have liked to see him getting a game instead of SA.

  13. 1. Why does he misquote me? Please note, I said, ‘how I think’.

    2. Why does he assume that I support reunification?

    Talk about mind control.

    More comedy gold.

    Trick question?

From my position in the occupied south — he was playing LB / Trad LB.

My comments were in respect of those NI Catholics who would prefer to remain within the UK.

Not every single one of them as individuals, but the generality of them.

And my comment was based on the responses to the NILT surveys, as reasons NI Catholics gave for wanting to remain as part of the UK, which have been discussed here previously.

Maybe if you took your head out of your arse from time to time and actually tried to understand what was being said, and then, if you are capable of doing so, engaged with the argument, rather than just spouting your predictably inane comments, we might actually move the discussion along.

As it is you are contributing absolutely nothing.

  16. MADMITCH on 22ND SEPTEMBER 2022 1:44 PM

I only saw part of the game and KT seemed to be playing mostly in the final third, even more so than he usually does so I just wondered if he’d perhaps been played in a different position.

It would have been interesting to see how well he’d have suited Angeball.

  17. MM – to my eyes, the lad Garbutt looked very strong; Abildgaard like if that’s a thing.

Whispers of Wolves, Leicester interest; nice moving big dude; decent control, mixes it too.

Was on free-to-air telly; if Ange was flicking between the game and Home and Away, he mighta noticed him!!

  18. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

“There is a glass ceiling here. ”

    ———————

Limits are in the eye of the beholder. I imagine Ange’s vision is somewhat different to that of the board.

Be interesting to see how that pans out.

    ————————————-

“Brendan Rodgers had us eating out of his hand, but his abrupt departure means he would not be considered appropriate to make the Paradise Windfall Draw these days”

    —————

Surely Neil Lennon’s departure was equally abrupt? Would he not be welcome back?

  19. EL @ 1.49

When we had the ball and we were playing on his side he pushed high up when he had the chance. To the point that SA was playing behind him at times.

Not sure how he would cope with coming inside into the MF?

He knows where the space is when he is working the touchline.

You could see that EPL has toughened him up / made him more active / intense.

Off the ball he never missed an opportunity to make sure his opponent knew he was there.

AH was his equal when he came on — huge talent in the making.

More active in defence / not quite got the threat of KT going forward.

Not sure if this is all EPL based or from his time in Italy?

Looked confident and comfortable in equal measure.

Does he have a wee brother?

  20. Reading back, its amazing how the usual suspects still try to change the history of the Mc Ginn transfer. So many times I have answered this nonsense with what actually did happen. Not one has come back to dispute it.Does not suit their agenda.

Celtic offered Hibs 2.3 million.Only bid on the table, and about the right price then. After a bit of horse trading,Petrie implied he did not want to sell to us,but if they did,it was 4 million,or no deal. All over the football news.Still no other bids.Celtic fans at the time saying he could fek off.Short memories on here.

Villa inquired, and Petrie let him go down to Villa,no fee even mentioned,to let him ,look around.Does that sound like a Celtic friendly Chairman?.

Villa then offered 2.7 million. On hearing this we equalled the bid.Petrie, who had demanded 4 million from us,backed by then Hibs manager Neil Lennon,on the price, accepted the Villa offer

It was then down to Mc Ginn,he chose Villa. Not one person contradicted these facts then.

If anyone would like to now please show me the reports from the time, and stop lying,or talking through ignorance,or hatred for PL.

  21. Half man / Half poultry @ 2.21

You only tell half the story.

    Why did JMcG choose AV?

Because PL sunk the deal with the wages offer.

For JMcC to match the AV offer he would have needed to play every game.

BR would not give him that guarantee.

The alternative would have been that we matched his AV offer.

No pulling strokes / pulling a fast one — just keeping it simple.

PL in full gimp mode was not the guy for that kind of situation.

  22. BIGBHOY on 22ND SEPTEMBER 2022 1:04 PM

“Does anyone think that Steve Clarke had Scotland playing a version of Angeball with a High press and advanced Full backs?

I feel he did change his set up”

    He did!

Any coach who had watched Celtic demolish Shakhtar 1-1 :)) would of course be thinking along the lines of how many of those Shakthar players would be playing and how to stop the lightning blonde-haired guy, no, not even attempting to spell his name.

He even went for the ex-Celt players who he knew could play the system and included them in his team. Must admit I didn’t expect Scotland to win last night. The missing Zinchenko was also a major factor in the victory. por cierto

  23. I hear the sound of distant drums, again. Interesting to read that HMV (it has never gone away you know) is producing and releasing records for the first time in over forty years. This time via the label 1921 Records, so called to commemorate the founding of the company just over 100 years ago. It’s great to be able to hear the sound of His Masters Voice once again. No?
