Answering tangential digs at Celtic

570

I see Celtic’s name was dragged by the media into what some low-life vandals did outside Ibrox this week – and a few years ago, for good measure.  There are low-life vandals out there, and we don’t have a way to filter them out of the Celtic support, so I‘d not dispute any of the tangential links, but vandalism like this happens all too often without media coverage.

When stories suddenly appear to be so well framed in the newspapers, you have to wonder why?  Or who is behind them?

There’s a big play underway for what, in this context, should be called Supremacy in Scotland.  Celtic have it right now and no one else is strong enough to eclipse them.  The best way to achieve this is to destabilise the club.  It’s worked, but only to an extent.

I read Paul Larkin on Hail Hail Media this morning who raises some interesting questions on what’s going on and what we should do about it, “as a collective, cannot be beaten”.  It’s hard to argue with.

We’ve got two exciting bits of Magners business for you today………..

First, if you want to win two Premium Seat tickets to the Jock Stein Stand for Sunday’s potential league winning game against Aberdeen, courtesy of main club sponsor, Magners, answer this question about our last 9-in-a-row campaign:

Against which team did Celtic win the first of their 9 consecutive titles, in 1966?

It was a famous game, settled by a famous scorer.  Email the team name IN THE SUBJECT LINE of your message, to celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at 17:00 TODAY, so you only have a few hours…..

And there’s more……  How do you fancy playing on Celtic Park in 12 days’ time?  Go to Facebook and enter this Magners competition to win a place in the end of season 7s tournament.

You get to grace the place that McGrory, Johnstone, Dalglish and Larsson did their stuff.  Do it.

Now I’ve got you in a good mood.  If you’ve a spare £1 in your metaphorical pocket, go stick it into the CQN Mary’s Meals appeal  Those CQN school kitchens in Malawi feed over 2,000 kids each day.  That’s food needed every day………

Happy Birthday Paul67, hope Mrs Paul67 spoils you.

  2. BURNLEY78…

It might not suit your sad little anti celtic diatribe. The facts are clear alcohol and in particular beer declined in consumption since the two biggest clubs were sponsored by a beer company. That beer company was very happy with the outcome. That beer brand would not be a type of alcohol regularly consumed by those who have alcohol issues.

When logic fails, resort to ad hominem insult. Implying I’m anti-Celtic won’t make it so. It just looks like you’re insulting me. I treat you with respect, kindly do likewise. I’ll point out initially that correlation doesn’t imply causation – alcohol sales falling is not due *in any way* to advertising on shirts. Advertising drives sales, or at least that’s the intention. You seem to be suggesting that somehow the aim of Carling/Magners was to reduce sales by advertising? Are you serious? The fall in lager consumption can be explained in a couple of ways – firstly, people drinking more often at home (the figures for the falls in consumption were from pub/bar/clubs) and secondly with the banning/regulation of certain types of alcohol advertising. Off licence sales have held steady for several years with cider sales increasing slightly.

You’re also far far off the mark with all your remarks. Let’s deal in fact.

First – The types of alcohol most regularly abused? Beer, Lager and cider. In underage drinkers 91% of alcohol consumed is beer, lager or cider (Source: Institute of Alcohol studies, Children, adolescents and underage drinking Factsheet)

Second – Children with a favourite alcohol advert (because Children are exposed to alcohol) are far more likely to binge drink than those children who do not. (Source: A report by the Medical Research Council at Glasgow University authored by Dr Sweeting and Mathis Morgenstern taking in 12000 subjects)

Third – Central Scotland is the alcohol consumption capital of the country, consuming some 18% above the national average. Oddly, this being the case when the two big Glasgow clubs have booze sponsorship on their shirts. (Source: NHS)

Fourth – 36% of children aged 13 in Glasgow will have have had at least one binge drinking session compared to 25% in Germany. One of the Scottish favoured drinks? You’ve guessed it! Magner’s Cider. (Source: A report by the Medical Research Council at Glasgow University authored by Dr Sweeting and Mathis Morgenstern taking in 12000 subjects)

Fifth: Glasgow born 15 year olds drink on average twice as many units of alcohol as their English counterparts. (Source: Scottish Schools Adolescent Lifestyle and Substance Use Survey 2013, Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use Among Young People in England – 2013)

Sixth: Scotland had the highest alcohol-related death rate (in 2013) for males at 29.8 per 100,000 population, while England had the lowest at 17.8 per 100,000. (Source: ONS)

Seventh: Quote from Medical Research Council report – “Advertising firms hired by multi-national corporations might be especially active in accessing these non-classical forms of advertising.” Brands including Foster’s, Tia Maria and Magners cider have Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels, all accessible by under-18s. And, the elephant in the room – football shirts with alcohol sponsorship in Magners case. Or, as quoted by Alcohol Focus Scotland – “The bottom line is that we are failing to protect children and young people from increasing corporate influence, particularly online.”

Blame the celtic board if you feel it makes you feel a lot better. Many on here seem to get their kicks from it… You are completely wrong however on this issue.

Just because you say something doesn’t make it fact. I’ve put references in above to show the damage that alcohol consumption, and the marketing of alcohol to children does. All you’ve demonstrated is that you can’t tell the difference between fact and your opinion. It’s the equivalent of finishing each sentence with FACT!. Doesn’t make it so. So yeah, I’ll blame the Celtic board for having alcohol and betting brands on our shirt when all available evidence demonstrates it causes significant harm. If you want to ignore that? Fill your boots, but you’re simply avoiding the truth.

Armchair quarterback is the best position most folk play. It’s the easiest one I ever played for sure.

Not sure what your point here is, other than it being another ad hominem of some sort. If it makes you feel better, fine, but you might spend your time better looking at my points and replying with some sort of fact.
