Assessing defenders and graduating talent

452

The story of Celtic’s left back position has been largely painful over the years. Emilio Izaguirre arrived after the 2010 Wold Cup and, for a few seasons at least, strengthened what was a perennial weak spot in the team. You’re going back decades, possibly to Danny McGrain himself, before you’ll find someone in the left back position Emilio wasn’t clearly a stand-out improvement on.

Having supplanted Emilio in the Celtic team, there’s a good chance that 18-year-old Kieran Tierney will make his Scotland debut tonight on his breakthrough season. It’s a great story for a player who has physicality and maturity beyond his years. We might just have a genuine player on our hands.

The echo of a big failure at left back still reverberates around the club. Seven years ago Sligo Rovers’ Seamus Coleman, was on trial at Lennoxtown, but was sent home as he wasn’t judged able to put pressure on Lee Naylor, during Gordon Strachan’s last season. Then reserve team coach, Willie McStay, recommended Coleman to Everton, where the player has turned into one of the best left backs in the English Premier League.

Assessing strikers is comparatively easy; there are objective statistics (goals scored) to inform your view, including at youth level. It’s not as easy assessing a defender, where picking a winner offers you only subjective opinions. Kieran has achieved far more than any of his teenage contemporaries this season, some of whom were more lauded than him.

Perhaps the crucial deciding factor in all this was who was given an extended run in the team. If you don’t allow your youth players to graduate (at the right time), and don’t sacrifice first team mainstays (at the right time) you’ll forever buy other teams’ graduates.

  1. With reference to the JJ post referring to LNS one gentleman seems to be coated with the same material as a stealth bomber. From the comment in moderation section.

Ogilvie’s sidekick Andrew Dickson who took over responsibility for administration of players contract paperwork from MIH in 2004 is now a Director at TRFC.

There were 3 occasions of concealment of paper work from either HMRC, the SFA and the SPL in 2005, 2011 and 2012. Dickson was the man in charge of players paperwork so HMRC letters demanding tax arrears from players would fall under his responsibilities even if only as the filing clerk.

He has a reputation of knowing the rules intimately (as Ogilvie) but is not so good at finding bits of paper specifically asked for or required to supply under specific rules.

So poor that HMRC said the 2005 failure to provide side letters to HMRC was deliberate.

So not providing them to HMRC was deliberate but not providing them to the SFA was just a ten year oversight?

    Clyde. Banana boat.

Nevertheless, presumably because of a knowledge of the rules that Regan lacks, Dickson was the guy Regan spoke to before sending a draft to RFC for approval to explain the issue of the 2011 licence, a draft that caused consternation at Ibrox and never was published following dinner with Rangers officials (not Dickson unless JJ knows otherwise) and with Ogilvie now joining the company of Regan.

Instead of trying to defend Bridcutt’s ‘tackle’ Scott Brown should have taken one for the team – our team – and decked him.

  5. Tomorrow will be a sad, sad, sad, day in Kev’s Jungle.

Rivers of tears will be shed, flags of all the clique-smashers

IMO,Regan was out of his depth on all this from Day One,and relied on the advice of his more experienced colleagues.

That they were more experienced in covering the illegal actions of one club rather than the administration of Scottish Football in general, will have come as a shock. Now,this far down the road,he is complicit with the cover-up,and can only continue down the same path.

He is a knave rather than a schemer.

That suggested statement would be a start. An apology is missing though and what is not being addressed is the culpability of the parties who have brought the game into disrepute.

Regan by running an organisation that is not fit for purpose is at the very best incompetent and any rules changes he has oversight of will not of themselves restore confidence in governance.

Ogilvie managed to get out before his role became as exposed as it now is, but Dickson, the very guy who administered players ebt paperwork in a manner that demands scrutiny is still at T/RFC and has a role on a regularity board.

A tightening up of processes is clearly required but you don’t know how to put something right if you don’t know where it went wrong in the first place.

In my view the problem is one of structure around which the processes are bent (pun intended) and a review of the relationships between the SFA and SPFL would go a long way towards cultural change at both.

What we have here is an opportunity for a rebirth of the game in Scotland but lack the midwife to deliver.

So we’ve established your issue is not with Celtic then?

  13. TRADITIONALIST88 on 30TH MARCH 2016 11:37 AM

No, my issue is with Celtic, for going along with the lie of the same club.

And the reason my issue is with Celtic, rather than anyone else, is that I expect more of Celtic than I do of the huns, the SFA, the SPFL, the SMSM.

    You might feel differently

  14. Ernie,

How do you differentiate between Huns, FTSFA, the SPFL and the SMSM.

It’s like they’re identical from where I am.

    What’s the collective term?

    Cabal seems appropriate.

I do tend to agree with you on this though.

If Celtic are waiting for legal process to finish, fine, patience is a virtue.

If due process concludes and the club(and the other 40) remain silent that wouldn’t be acceptable.

    So I’ll be virtuous:-)

AULDHEID@11:17 – Do you have, or, have you seen, a copy of said Ibrox draft?

I can’t speak for Auldheid,Mr Pastry but I have certainly seen not only the draft for the media which S.Regan intended putting out,but his asking permission to do so from RFC,their response to him telling him not to put it out (which he followed) and an invite to dinner for not only regan but the “heavily conflicted” ogilvie to meet with whyte and russell.

I could even tell you the where and when the dinner date was set for. 20th December 2011 in The Glengoyne Room at The Hotel Du Vin

Your issue is clearly with the governance of the game rather than Celtic.

You expect more from Celtic and you are getting more from Celtic – there is no Old Firm pandering from the club.

The fact is we have to play them soon – a new Rangers was always going to do their best to emerge as a rival to us. They may have a big support but they can’t live with us financially and the OF stuff from external parties will dissipate.

  18. I hope all you celtic folk are not being reeled in by this JJ guy , being a close friend of mcmurdo tells me all I want to know about the chappy . AULDHEED . Are there any other clubs fans that you know of who are supportive of res 12 , or are celtic fans the only ones wanting justice here .

On another point , I was very impressed by both young Kieran , and the boy McGinn last night , how did celtic miss this lad .

  19. Just read the Efe article on CQN latest News.

It reads like something from the Daily Record.

Thought this place was an alternative to the MSM

  20. If the club didn’t consider TRFC to be a new club why would they retire the instantly recognisable and highly marketable ‘Old Firm’ tag? It’s quite subtle I know but it is making a statement on it.
