Backlash needed for Highlanders

623

Three weeks after putting 8 goals past South Lanarkshire’s top team Celtic struggled to demonstrate their superiority against the county’s least decorated SFA member

We’ve seen these games before, East Kilbride looked no weaker than the Arbroath team who took us to a replay after drawing at Celtic Park a few years back, but neither performance was an endorsement of Celtic’s football.

I’m getting an uncomfortable feeling that teams know how to play Celtic. For most, this knowledge will not affect the result, but some, like Ross County and Aberdeen, will figure they can give us the ball all day, and as long as they stick to task, they’ll have a chance.

The only resolution to the ills of the last three outings is to get back on the field and boss a game the way we did several times last month. Ross County and Inverness both visit Celtic Park in the next two weeks and both need to feel a backlash. Let’s hope.

The refereeing er fraternity, will be delighted how things are panning out.

They will be right at it, in the run in.

We need to be strong and ruthless….and command.

    RE EK game

Was very pleased to see young Matt McGinley play a stormer.

He’s a great Celtic supporter, lovely fella and according to my son a great PE teacher. I caught up with him last year to have a bite to eat and watch a Celtic game ( a European disappointment!) when he was teaching in Cults. He was playing for Buckie Thistle at that point – who would have thought a year later he’d be facing Celtic?!?

It’s a funny old game right enough.

    Well done Matt!

  3. Am I alone in wondering if last night’s shambolic draw was deliberately done to prepare the SFA’s excuses, that they’re incompetent rather than corrupt, when their cheating is exposed in the course of the year?

I totally agree that msm will try and it something it isn’t and that the games will sell out.

For me it’s perhaps personal, I don’t know. I’ve always stated that their eventual rise to the premiership was inevitable, presuming they stayed afloat – like or not they’re too big not too but if they did I’d treat them as any other team. Unlike Rangers I won’t be ensuring I can’t possibly miss they game. If something’s happening that means I miss the game so be it. I wouldn’t move hell and earth to make a Killie game. RIFC will get the same treatment.

By the same token I won’t be deliberately boycotting.

  6. By the way, I don’t think they are guaranteed promotion. Stokes might be the difference. He’s scored in each of his starts in that division

Re GMS I hear you but of all the Scottish signings we’ve made lately he and Griffiths looked like safe bets.

GMS probably has most natural ability.

He’s looked good linking with Leigh in a few games.

I believe he’ll come good but if it doesn’t show by the end of the season time will have beaten him… Patrick Roberts is the threat to these guys. He’ll play because he is higher quality and because we need to keep Man City sweet but I wonder what impact he’ll have on a few players opportunities.

In my opinion you need to build a team around regular likely to stay guys not loan players…. As we are now finding out in central defence..

  9. If Sevco make their maiden voyage in the top tier of Scoddish Football next season after their delay-filled journey from tier zero, armed with officially acknowledged World Record titles and 1872 foundations, at least the kick-off times for all games will be standardised.

My team, your team, they b******s will be back in abundance, our club will need us, just hope the board realise we need them. HH

  14. I think that Celtic signed Scott Allan to stump the huns.

Maybe they’ll do the same with McInnes ?

Think Warburton will be away in the summer.

I just don’t think he has the technical attributes to produce anything more than minimal end product. He wouldnt even be described as having a sweet left foot, in a game where 99% of left feet are described as sweet!

Hope I’m wrong of course but I think he’d be on the surplus to requirements list for a ruthless manager.

I have high hopes for Henderson – sprays the ball around well, gets up and down, scores goals, can mix it in midfield and the dying art of crossing a ball is in his locker. I really hope he is given a big role in the first team next season as he is quite a unique talent.

Liam Henderson is a better all round player than Scott Allan imo.

That said Allan does have a chance too but needs to step up and make himself a first choice.

  19. Ronny was being lined up to be an assistant manager. A combination of circumstances and an impressive interview process elevated him into the manager’s chair at Celtic Park.

He got off to a terrible start in Europe, just like WGS and Neil Lennon before him.

He won the league in his first season, as did WGS but not Neil Lennon.

He also won the League Cup and lost out at the semi-final stage of the Scottish Cup, although the referee played his part in the outcome that day.

He’s had loan signings thrust upon him and he’s seen his best players sold, starting with Fraser Forster and then the biggest loss in Virgil van Dijk who was Celtic’s most important player last season.

The loss of VVD and Jason Denayer – who was coming back if we reached Champions Legaue group stages, has been a huge loss for Deila’s side this season.

You can see in Europe, in the matches at Aberdeen and at Hampden the other week, that we have struggled to get our act together defensively. Our goal scoring has been fine, even in Europe, and in the defeats domestically we have scored each time.

The goalkeeping this year has been much poorer than last season. It took a year to realise that Craig Gordon is no Fraser Forster.

At left back Izzy has lost his place to KT who is surely the Young Player of the Year this season. Izzy lost his place because of failings in his defensive duties.

At right back our signing from Man Utd has been injured, Matthews sold (he wanted away) and ML has had a poor season by his own standards.

In central defence DB arrived from Manchester City and Efe has confirmed what we all know – he is error prone. That is costly.

But we lost players of the quality of Denayer and VVD and that is some gap to fill. Given the resources made available to Ronny, could we have expected anything other than what has happened?

Last season was Ronny’s first and it was hopefully the last season of the buy to sell on strategy. Now we are trying to build Ronny’s strategy and build a young and exciting homegrown team.

The signings with this in mind have been encouraging but it takes time, and Ronny has to deliver in the meantime. It’s no time to lose our nerve.

Ronny should deliver the league title and maybe the Scottish Cup this season, with us behind him and the team.

Next season will probably see THEM playing in our league for the first time. The MSM will do all they can – are doing all they can – to undermine Celtic and our manager and in doing so increase the intensity and generate stories. Pro new club and anti Celtic stories.

We all knew that VVD was using us a stepping stone. He got his move by playing well at Celtic but that’s not the way forward.

Let’s get behind Ronny and the young team he is building, and with a double in the bag come May, we will all be feeling a wee bit better about all things Celtic.

    Sips..,

Celtic actually own the copy right for the phrase “old firm” so they could actually make it hard for ant media outlet that wants to use the phrase, maybe charge them for use, I mean they are always babbling about raising new income streams or do we already make money from that source and why its not been killed off.

It’s getting way OTT with this big splinter group push, and some wanting to protest before Sat. Game, outside & inside, you see this is what I’v been saying for months, they set everyone up, and push they’r agenda, soooooo predictable, all the Wee boys will be hoisting the banners on sat. And the leaders? No where to be seen, as usual, splinter groups are Celtics shame. If I had to pick a manager for Celtic right now it would be …

    Alan Stubbs.

Firstly we’d get him. He is very inexperienced but I think has the attributes. He speaks well. He has authority. He’s done it at Celtic and in the EPL.

The fans can relate to him.

He improves players and builds a team.

The price would be the need for patience in Europe,

    He’d definitely see off Huns..

  26. Likewise, there is always a danger that when one of your players has a storming season, he will attract interest from other clubs.

After last year’s POTY award, Johansen has had a carefully orchestrated “shocker” this season.

    Cunning.

  27. traditionalist88 on

    Winning Captains

Good post. A change in strategy would be interesting and a homegrown team would get the fans on board PROVIDED they are of the required quality.

The fact remains that on the football side the bar must be raised and that starts with the manager – can he develop a ruthless streak that he has yet to show in nearly 2 years and cut loose the players that demonstrably do not have the mental or technical aptitude to play for Celtic?

No one will care for the average age or the nationality of the squad if the quality continues to decline.
