Bankier, Livingston and most plural club in UK

485

I didn’t see Ian Bankier’s performance today, but I watched his predecessor John Reid a few times. John wasn’t liked by a significant body of the support, largely for professional reasons (his role in government), but when he got on his feet to address Celtic supporters, he had an intuitive feel for what to say. No one ever needed to script him.

Ian Livingston has received a lot of criticism since voting with the government in the recent Tax Credits bill. I’d heard the nature of some of what was written online included reference to his background – appalling, without question. Nor would it surprise you or me, we’ve been online long enough to see just about everything, including those who troll others on account of their background or identity. Often with Celtic-related targets.

We are a plural club, with people from Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, and for all I know, other backgrounds, on our board, all these and more in our dressing room, and among our support. I’m proud of this. We are often caricatured as an exclusively Irish-diaspora club but few in the UK can claim such an ethnic panorama.

A club of immigrants founded 127 years ago has continued to attract new immigrants ever since.  It’s worthwhile reminding ourselves of this, it should continue to be a part of our forward strategy.  What correlates with this is that anyone with a prejudice will find a target at Celtic – such is the diversity of our club. Celtic fans, players and officials have been targets like this for a very long time.

Was Ian Livingston right to vote with the government on Tax Credits? No. I haven’t considered the policy’s economic merits (first pass suggested it had none) but I believe his voice should have been raised against the policy. The expectations of being a representative of Celtic, not just a board member, are weighty.

Ian Bankier could have read all inappropriate online comment referring to Ian Livingston’s background immediately before today’s AGM, but that forum was not the place to mark anyone’s card. The intuitive feel John Reid had on these occasions was missing today. Go complain about such comment to the appropriate authorities, or to whatever online facilities hosted the comments, tell Ian Livingston ‘You’ll never walk alone’ in a private moment, but address shareholders and Celtic fans on matters appropriate to them.

  1. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

    Cowrie joy

I could imagine Paul Mcgugan improving our current defence

Never thought I’d yearn for the days of Caldwell and McManus :-))

  2. Firstly let me say that I haven’t heard anything that was said at the AGM.

However, just as it does with many on here, having no knowledge of a subject will not preclude me from uttering an opinion.

I am concerned about what amounts to an acid test about what employees, fans, players etc are worthy to either wear the jersey, serve the club or run the finances.

    Are political affiliations important?

    How about religion?

    What about previous employers?

Nationality? Colour of skin? Colour of hair? Presence of hair? Mensa candidate?

Once a person steps through the gates of Paradise we should only care how well he performs in whatever role he is employed.

How far do we take this?

as you used to say… mmmmmm

I cannot claim to have any reach on social media but when Bankier said ‘racist’ I was totally lost. Presumably there is some evidence of this which should be actionable. I am frankly unconvinced but happy to bow to any evidence (still none seen).

Frankly Bankier called the petition approach racist or racist motivated. That is what he said. I believe he was wrong and as well as sullying supporters he has shamed his position. Hence the post AGM statement.

There is a gulf between the support and the Board. The gap is widening not closing.

There is a problem. Bankier is clearly part of the problem.

Unfortunately (or perhaps deliberately?) this meant that more important issues went unexplored…

I agree someways on the Ian Livingstone political views being anti Celtic

I don’t remember (but I could be very wrong here ) if I ever heard such a big demonstration at an AGM against a Celtic chairman who supported the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocents in an illegal war

I think a lot of this is party political from members of the party who did nothing for the poor when in power

If I have got my dates right, Reid was appointed eight years ago today.

There were certainly plenty in the body of the hall who seemed to approve of the appointment.

Doubtless among them were some who gave Livingstone a rough time today.

Before anyone jumps in, I personally consider Tories to be the scum of the earth.

    I think I knew that ;-))

Out of touch doesn’t come close csc

    Fud comes to mind.

  8. Mr Bankier made a wild statement today which he better be able to back up with evidence otherwise he is unfit to hold the esteemed position of chairman at our great club and his days are numbered.

I think you should acknowledge that you were wrong in your article yesterday that Celtic are paying ‘at or above the Living Wage’.

Also choosing between Bankier and Reid is like having to choose between Hearts and ‘Rangers’.

  10. Bankier says Livingston was abused online….I don’t know about that.

But…I do know that Neil Lennon got horrific sectarian abuse, and the board didn’t seem too bothered about it.

    Double standards at play here.

If inclusivity means equality, well, that’s great.

But does that then give you the right to hurt people for ideological reasons?

    Doesn’t add up.

To me if someone is getting abused on a forum, he should contact the police…as we all know that they would jump on it.

Why bring it up at an AGM with the hacks waiting to pounce…questions must be asked and dealt with bankier.

If that is what he meant in the first place! HH

As I have posted previously. Double standards were evident when the Board had hee haw to say about Reid and Haughey dragging the club’ss name into politics.

    Doesn’t add up.

To be honest I dont care about all this shit, Im only interested in football.

But, Bankier said Livingston was abused online, plenty of posts on here said he wasn’t and questioned Bankier. Paul67 then puts up a post which includes Livinston being abused online, and there’s not a peep about P67.

It’s not the fact that Lawwell and co have become so rich that that they have become totally detached from the values of ordinary supporters . They have become detached because they are @r52eholes . Rod Stewart… Gerrard Butler… To name but two fans who have attained serious wealth and celebrity status strike me as still being in touch with what Celtic are all about.

Bankier et al are just complete @holes…

And of course…Lenny highlighted the sectarian abuse he got only the other day…..and not a peep from Bankier or Lawell….not that I seen anyway.
