Be there on Saturday for yourself

325

Jock and BillyAt the front of Celtic Park on Saturday a statue will be unveiled to our greatest ever captain, Billy McNeill. Billy joins our founder, Bro. Walfrid, our greatest ever manager, Jock Stein, and our greatest player, Jimmy Johnstone, in being honoured in this way.

Achievers of this calibre are so rare I cannot imagine the circumstances under which another candidate for a statue will emerge. Even if we go on at some point in the future to win the Champions League, it will be nothing like what Billy and his team did. Modern European champions are the distillation of global scouting, money and big business. They don’t take the bus from the town they were born into training for years at the club they will collectively bring to the summit.

Without being distracted by contemporary issues, I have hope for the future, and for Celtic, but on Saturday we will peer through a telescope that looks back 128 years. Billy McNeill encapsulates the values and traditions which founded and nurtured Celtic throughout this period. Not only that, he is the man who led the team (in every sense of the word) to one of the most incredible sporting achievements in football history.

Get to the game early and be there for Billy. Be there for yourself. Our memories of Saturday will last. We’ll recall the first time we saw his statue, and that we were there to share his smile on the day.

Get your friends along.  Bring the kids. Tell them who he is and what he did. You or they will never again get a chance to honour Willie Maley, Jimmy McGrory, Jock Stein or Jimmy Johnstone, but you can be there to share an important occasion with Billy McNeill. That, my friends, will be a precious moment.

GLASGOW CARING CITY

On Thursday morning, near Shawfield, Glasgow the Caring City are loading their latest batch of aid bound for migrants camped in Serbia. Much needed winter clothes are being shipped. They are looking for four volunteers to help load the container. Starting at 9:00 they should finish by 11:00.

It will be physical work but they are offering tea and rolls in compensation. If you can make it along to help these great people with such a worthy cause, email Ross Galbriath, ross@glasgowthecaringcity.com and let him know. I bet you also get something out of the experience you’re not expecting.

Thanks.

Stocking fillers, books, DVDs and all sorts of wonders (actually, just books and DVDs, but they are great) are available at the CQN Bookstore.

Apart from some fans of Aberdeen with banners nothing has been heard from the Aberdeen board until today,I went to the STV sport website to see if the context of the interview could have distorted his statement, there is no segment of this part of the interview, only about their new stadium being put back.

I hope their fans make their feelings known to their board as I feel another stitch up is in the making

  3. Ibleedgreenandwhite1,

Apart from a few vocal supporters there is no real appetite for any sustained fight from the ordinary rank and file fan. ( the ones I have spoken to anyway )

The Aberdeen Chairman would have gauged opinions prior to saying what he said.

    Sad but true.

Dessybhoy…. I dont really care what the Don’s chairman or fans say …. I expect nothing from them. For me, it will be what Celtic say and do.

And then, for me, it is less about the result ……(although I would like to see Celtic awarded titles that it was cheated out of, that is not the primary concern for me ….. as long as Celtic fight the good fight (and stand up for the club, its traditions and its fans) then I will continue to back them all the way, whatever the result.

  9. Best nights for me at CP would be:-

1983 5-0 v S Lisbon. My first Euro game and what a performance. Had the lime top and the McClair mullet!

1992 3-2 v Cologne. Crap team but pulled out a 3-0 to go through. I was right behind the goal for McStay and Collins goals

2006 1-0 v Man U. Bravest and most mature perf in Europe. Could hear Naka hit it and it hit the net. We knew he could do it.

    Best 3 days:-

1983 1-3 b Aberdeen. We lost but my first trip to paradise, the jungle

1987 2-0 v rangers. Didn’t eat for a day and a half as mt last cash was to buy my ticket and train home for Christmas. McStays pass is still the best I ever saw

2006 2-1 v hearts. The one Gordon threw in the net. Great late win but memorable as I had given up but my wife, at her first game, kept believing and shouting for the Hoops.

As I have commented previously on the above.

Don’t suspend yourself by the tender parts waiting for action from Celtic Board.

They will simply refuse to rock the boat.

Don’t know too much about the Stockholm Syndrome aspect, but I do imagine that keeping the head down is a fairly common minority thing.

Quonno … in American sociology, deaing with race relations, there is a term called ‘uncle tom syndrome’ which is used to “describe a ritualized, accommodating, sycophantic style of behavior in African Americans toward Caucasians.” some have taken that concept in a more institutional direction …. why some minority groups do not challenge oppressive powers structures …. sort of Gramsci’s notion of hegemony, but in a sociological context.

somthing I have wondered about ….

when I was younger, and I misbehaved, I was sent to the corner …. so, when all the CQN’ers meet at CQN corner, is it because they were misbehaving?

    My friends in Celtic,

I am surprised, that some of us are surprised about the comments and thoughts coming from the Aberdeen hierarchy.

I doubt very much if they echo the views of the Aberdeen fans. Maybe it’s not just Celtic who suffer from the disconnect between fans and hierarchy?

All a bit deep for me. I simply think that in the case of the Celic board, preserving the bigot pound will win the day.

Absolutely disgusted by Milne’s cowardly surrender to the forces of darkness. It looks extremely likely that we alone with have to fly the flag for integrity and justice. I venture to suggest that preparations have to be made NOW and propose the establishment of a “Campaign Fund” to ensure that funds are available for a Judicial Review. If a trusted proponent of Resolution 12 were to open a bank account and, assuming that the costs of this would be £100,000 and if 1,000 Celtic shareholders/supporters were to £100 each then the funding would be in place.

I would not be relying on Ashley to continue with his judicial review. There may be a murky last-minute deal done and IMHO we should be ready especially if CFC are precluded by the rules of the discredited SFA.

If more were subscribed, perhaps copies, translated into the appropriate language of the European Clubs affected by the cheating of the deid club might encourage them to raise the chicanery with UEFA.

I, for one, will gladly donate £100 to “the cause.” and would, for my part, offer the donation to Mary’s Meals if there is no need to proceed to Judicial Review. This could set up a Celtic Kitchen attached to a school somewhere in one of the developing countries. Just my not very well constructed thoughts. HH

TBJ … ha! Dena may be the ‘main’ culprit…. but, from what I hear, she would be in good company then! :)

TBJ …. I tried unsuccessfully to find it on my last trip to Celtic Park … was thinking it was sort of Celtic’s equivalent of Brigadoon ….but I”m hoping that in March we will be able to find it and join in.

  24. Interesting :-)

uefaThe Dutch football association (KNVB) have banned FC Twente from playing in Europe for the next three seasons due to licence breaches.

Twente have been punished for deliberately misleading the KNVB about funding and financing from a third party, the Maltese based Doyen Sports Investments Group.

In 2011 despite having an overdue tax payment of £6m the SFA licensed Rangers (IL) to play in the qualifiers for the Champions League where they lost to Malmo.

A group of Celtic shareholders have raised the matter with the SFA but have yet to be given an explanation. Football administration expert Andrew Dickson submitted the licence application despite the tax demand (from the wee tax case) being overdue on June 30. While ignoring the tax demand Ally McCoist went on a spending spree as well as awarding new contracts to Steve Davis, Steven Whittaker and Allan McGregor.

Wary of UEFA and FIFA’s view on third party ownership the KNVB have blocked Twente’s prospects of playing in European competitions and hit the club with a fine of 45,000 euros. More importantly their current licence could be revoked if they fail to fully co-operate with the probe into the role of Doyen Sports Investment.

The KNVB said the punishment follows Twente’s failure to reveal full details of a third-party ownership contract with Malta-based Doyen Sports Investments.

FIFA has banned third-party ownership as a threat to the game’s integrity because investors force transfers to make a profit.

The Football Leaks website last month published a contract between Twente and Doyen in which Doyen agreed to pay Twente 5 million euros for between 10 and 50 percent of the transfer fee rights for seven players. The deal was signed in 2014, before FIFA outlawed third-party ownership.

The KNVB said the sanctions were imposed by its licensing committee. The association also is sending Twente’s dealings with Doyen Sports to the KNVB prosecutor and to FIFA
