Being formed by immigrants still has power to shock

1162

A club formed by the Irish immigrant population sends best wishes to Scotland and Ireland. Read all about it! It’s as though our heritage still has the power to shock. How timely the outrage came hours before Celtic launched their “We are Celtic – and we say No To Racism” initiative.  This morning Scott Brown reminded us, “Celtic has been a club open to all people since its formation in 1888”.  Stick to task, Celtic.

Congratulations to our former boss, Martin O’Neill, in getting the Irish to at least the knock-out round. Commiserations to our other former boss, Gordon Strachan. Gordon will be feeling sore right now but he should lick his wounds and stick to task. He got the better of Ireland on their head-to-head and came within a whisker of also getting the better of Poland. The loss in Georgia was typical Scotland – you cannot change everything in two years, while Ireland taking four points from six off Germany is inexplicable.

Gordon is by far the best man to take Scotland the World Cup 2018 qualifiers; get on with it.

I’m really sorry I couldn’t give you great news, mate. And really sorry I couldn’t do so in person. I thought long and hard about it,asked some advice.

It wasn’t a pleasant thing to write, and I know it wasn’t a pleasant thing to read. No silver lining on it. But there could be,just maybe,as I suggested.

It’s a lot to think about, mate. If I can be of the slightest help-even to shout at-feel free, anytime.

  4. So i have 3 players who have come out and said either ” im sick of being played out of positio, or, im sick of being Booed, dont pick me no more”……Crerand, a Man u player….Steve Murray…I think we bought him from aberdeen…, no recolection of him..

    And Connolly…A Genius….Any More….Talking Scotland here….Any more?

Delaney’s, long may your youthful outlook continue.

Your enthusiasm is infectious particularly for our team, good music and being sociable.

One of your favourites, The Maccabees , were on Later last week or the week before.

I was planning on going tomorrow but as i explained to Bobby M the other night, I can’t attend. As Bobby will be in Glasgow, we’ll be in Ayr at my wife’s pal’s.

BGX, Stevie Murray scored when we beat Dundee Utd in the 1974 cup final and the extra time winner against Basel in the European Cup quarter final the same year.

Very good midfield player who had to retire early as I believe one of his toes was amputated.

  7. Dixie Deans…if He did Good on Him….But hes a Man utdman te..Celtic is his second team by a Trillion Miles

You remember Paddy Crerand but not Stevie Murray?

Ok. Which one suits your agenda?

I agree, btw, that Paddy Crerand considers himself more a Man Utd ex than a Celtic ex. That may be to do with how the two clubs treated him.

Willie Wallace tells the story of why he quit playing for Scotland when he was absolutely mucked about by the selectors.

He was told to report to Seamill even when he explained that his wife was unwell and he was needed at home. They insisted he turn up.

When he got there, he was then told he would not be in the team and so his journey had been for nothing.

He called big Jock, told him what he was about to do, got his permission and support so to speak, told the selectors he was walking out on Scotland, later confirmed this in writing, and never went back.

He just felt he and his family were being treated like dogs — and the wee man was having none of that!

BGX, I’m sorry if my post about Stevie Murray came over as being cheeky, that wasn’t my intention.

I mentioned those two goals as they were the two most important Stevie scored for us.

    Willy Wallace quote ..

” Slaves are made in such ways. The

last time Longshanks spoke of peace I was a boy. And

many Scottish nobles, who would not be slaves, were

lured by him under a flag of truce to a barn, where

he had them hanged. I was very young, but I

    remember Longshanks’ notion of peace”

  20. BRTH: Enjoy your visit to South of France. I spent a lot of time there. There is nothing pretentious about the area, not too many wealthy people with extravagant homes. If near Carcassonne visit the walled city – it is amazing. If near Perpignon visit Coullier on Sunday morning. Lots of other things to do and see there.

In the early days of CQN we had big quiz nights, 400 people packed into some place, somewhere, they were great nights, And I mean great nights, Gordon J ran a few of them, I think they were held in Bell St, right in the centre of town, great nights, pity we couldn’t get back to those days, fabulous evenings, missed by me, maybe a few more. Gordon J, let’s have another one.

I would type what he said but it breaks Paul’s blog rules.

BGX, Stevie was one of my favourite players when I was ten and eleven years old. Like Pat Stanton, i think he was only with us for two years before he retired through injury.

Pat only played for one season and was out for all of his second season after being injured in the first league game of the 77/78 season.
